  1. to God's praise. Now to begin our worship in Psalm 86. Psalm number 86, this is in the

  2. Scottish Psalter version, page 341, and we're singing verses 12 through to the end of the psalm.

  3. O Lord my God, with all my heart, to Thee I will give praise, and I the glory will ascribe unto

  4. Thy name always. Because Thy mercy toward me in greatness doth excel, and Thou delivered

  5. hast my soul out from the lowest hell. Verses 12 to 17, actually it is, in Psalm 86, to God's

  6. praise.

  7. O Lord my God, with all my heart, to Thee I will give praise, and I will give praise, and I will

  8. give praise, and I the glory will ascribe unto Thy name always. Because Thy mercy toward me,

  9. in greatness doth excel, and Thou delivered hast my soul out from the lowest hell.

  10. And Thou delivered hast my soul out from the lowest hell. O God, the Father, the Father,

  11. knowing that, and Thou relationships be right, and Thy environment.

  12. and the head

  13. that for my soul

  14. hath so done thee

  15. before them

  16. hath not said

  17. but thou art full

  18. of faith ye Lord

  19. a God most gracious

  20. from suffering

  21. and in thy good

  22. and mercy plentious

  23. O turn to me

  24. thy countenance

  25. and mercy on me have

  26. thy servant strength

  27. and the son

  28. of thine own hand

  29. may save

  30. show me a sign

  31. for good God

  32. may

  33. wish to be

  34. in his ear

  35. and be a ship

  36. because the Lord

  37. is

  38. self

  39. and

  40. comfort

  41. me

  42. let's now call upon the Lord in prayer

  43. we'll join together in prayer

  44. gracious and eternal God

  45. as we gather once again here in your presence

  46. we pray for your help

  47. we pray for your help that we may worship you as we ought to

  48. that our minds may be focused upon

  49. those things that are glorious

  50. in your work and in your person

  51. we pray for grace O Lord

  52. to focus upon your word

  53. which we find so central

  54. to our worship

  55. and we pray that you would enable us O Lord

  56. to not only read your word

  57. and hear it being expounded

  58. help us as speaker and hearers alike

  59. to take your word to heart

  60. apply it to our hearts we pray

  61. by your Holy Spirit

  62. to enable us thereby

  63. to give you the glory

  64. and the praise

  65. that you are worthy of

  66. in a due reception of your word

  67. we know Lord

  68. that when we receive your word

  69. as your word

  70. we thereby honour you

  71. we honour your name

  72. and we give thanks for

  73. the word that you have given us

  74. we ask O Lord

  75. that you would enable us

  76. in our understanding of your word

  77. to increase in that understanding daily

  78. we know that your word

  79. has so many aspects to it

  80. so many depths

  81. that we can find ourselves

  82. drawn into

  83. and even though some

  84. we cannot fully understand

  85. and comprehend

  86. yet we thank you

  87. for the benefit nevertheless

  88. of giving our minds to them

  89. we thank you

  90. for the plain message

  91. of your word

  92. in regard to our redemption

  93. we give thanks O Lord

  94. that your word

  95. shows us the way

  96. of salvation so clearly

  97. and that there are no

  98. aspects of that left

  99. as mysteries to us

  100. and Lord we thank you

  101. that as Jesus Christ

  102. is presented to us

  103. in your word

  104. in the message of the gospel

  105. we give thanks

  106. that thereby you speak to us

  107. you call us to yourself

  108. you impress upon us Lord

  109. the need to turn our back

  110. to sin

  111. to a life of selfishness

  112. which we are all O Lord

  113. by nature

  114. so much prone to

  115. we thank you tonight

  116. Lord for being together

  117. we thank you

  118. for the improvement

  119. in our situation

  120. with regard to the

  121. COVID pandemic

  122. and we thank you

  123. that we are able

  124. to express ourselves

  125. in song

  126. in praise

  127. in singing your praises

  128. in a way that is

  129. O Lord

  130. not hampered by

  131. even though the necessary

  132. masks were in place

  133. for some time

  134. we pray O Lord

  135. that for all of these

  136. good things

  137. and for everything good

  138. that comes from you

  139. we may tonight

  140. be thankful

  141. and we may be

  142. the more dependent

  143. upon you

  144. your word tells us

  145. we live and move

  146. and have our being

  147. in you

  148. however Lord

  149. we may progress

  150. in this world

  151. however much we may have

  152. of worldly success

  153. and however legitimate

  154. these things

  155. may be in themselves

  156. yet Lord

  157. we are reminded

  158. so frequently

  159. in your word

  160. that they are all

  161. from you

  162. as regards

  163. the good things

  164. that we enjoy

  165. and that it is

  166. by your power

  167. and by your might

  168. by your grace

  169. that you have given

  170. them to us

  171. help us to honour you

  172. with our daily lives

  173. help us to take

  174. O Lord

  175. from our worship

  176. this evening

  177. that which would

  178. follow through

  179. into the rest

  180. of the week

  181. for us

  182. and help us

  183. to be concerned

  184. in our daily life

  185. to manifest

  186. the glory

  187. of Christ

  188. and to show

  189. ourselves

  190. as willing

  191. servants

  192. of the Lord

  193. and to commend

  194. him to those

  195. that we meet

  196. with on a daily

  197. basis

  198. Lord forgive us

  199. we pray

  200. for our failures

  201. in regard

  202. to this

  203. we regard

  204. even the best

  205. of us

  206. Lord

  207. as not fully

  208. committed

  209. to this

  210. in the way

  211. we ought

  212. we confess

  213. O Lord

  214. we let many

  215. opportunities

  216. pass

  217. that they're

  218. gone

  219. before we

  220. realise

  221. that we

  222. ought to

  223. have made

  224. the most

  225. of them

  226. we pray

  227. your forgiveness

  228. Lord

  229. in regard

  230. to all

  231. our sins

  232. the sins

  233. that are

  234. obvious

  235. in our lives

  236. sins of speech

  237. and of behaviour

  238. as well as

  239. those that we

  240. find in our

  241. own hearts

  242. may not be

  243. known to any

  244. others but

  245. ourselves

  246. and you

  247. you are the

  248. God who

  249. looks into

  250. our hearts

  251. keenly

  252. and perfectly

  253. and O Lord

  254. we know

  255. that we

  256. cannot hide

  257. from you

  258. and cannot

  259. hide anything

  260. else from you

  261. that we

  262. find in

  263. ourselves

  264. or in

  265. all that we

  266. think or do

  267. we give

  268. thanks for

  269. this

  270. but it is

  271. thereby Lord

  272. that we can

  273. come and

  274. place our

  275. entire selves

  276. our lives

  277. in your hand

  278. knowing that

  279. you are able

  280. to provide

  281. against all

  282. our need

  283. in all its

  284. variety

  285. in all its

  286. extent

  287. so bless us

  288. Lord we pray

  289. tonight as a

  290. congregation

  291. bless all the

  292. gatherings of

  293. your people

  294. in this town

  295. and beyond

  296. enable Lord

  297. your people

  298. tonight to

  299. know the

  300. empowerment

  301. of your

  302. Holy Spirit

  303. oh we thank

  304. you for your

  305. Holy Spirit

  306. we thank you

  307. for the

  308. ministry that

  309. your spirit

  310. exercises

  311. in bringing

  312. us oh Lord

  313. to know

  314. ourselves as

  315. sinners

  316. destitute of

  317. righteousness

  318. we thank you

  319. for the

  320. ministry of

  321. your spirit

  322. convicting us

  323. of our sin

  324. and of our

  325. misery

  326. we thank you

  327. for the

  328. ministry of

  329. your spirit

  330. in directing

  331. us to the

  332. saviour and

  333. in enabling

  334. us to embrace

  335. you as the

  336. living God

  337. the living saviour

  338. of his people

  339. Lord we ask

  340. for your spirit

  341. to guide us

  342. in our

  343. Christian walk

  344. we give

  345. thanks oh

  346. Lord for

  347. all that you

  348. have been to

  349. us thus far

  350. we pray that

  351. whatever age we

  352. may be

  353. our lives may

  354. be directed

  355. by your

  356. holy spirit

  357. day by

  358. day

  359. we give

  360. thanks for

  361. the work of

  362. your spirit

  363. and sanctifying

  364. your people

  365. and preparing

  366. them to be

  367. with you in

  368. heaven

  369. and Lord we

  370. pray that

  371. tonight each

  372. of us may

  373. know that

  374. influence in

  375. our own

  376. lives

  377. our hearts

  378. being directed

  379. towards you

  380. and made

  381. conformable to

  382. you in your

  383. own will and

  384. purpose

  385. remember us

  386. Lord we pray

  387. in all that we

  388. seek to do

  389. throughout each

  390. week in your

  391. name both in

  392. regard to our

  393. young folks and

  394. other age groups

  395. too we pray for

  396. our young people

  397. and ask Lord as

  398. we are thankful

  399. for them we

  400. pray for each

  401. and every

  402. individual we

  403. pray for all the

  404. families that

  405. have young people

  406. that belong to

  407. us as a

  408. congregation

  409. Lord remember

  410. them we pray

  411. at this time

  412. and establish

  413. them in your

  414. ways we ask

  415. your blessing

  416. for youth

  417. fellowship this

  418. evening and

  419. pray that you

  420. would bless

  421. them as they

  422. meet together

  423. we pray for

  424. Reverend Ferrier

  425. as he speaks

  426. to them we

  427. pray that that

  428. will be a

  429. blessed occasion

  430. to all

  431. concern and

  432. we ask oh

  433. Lord that you

  434. would continue

  435. to provide for

  436. our Sunday

  437. school or our

  438. creche for our

  439. tweenies for

  440. other groups

  441. Lord that

  442. involve our

  443. young people

  444. bless your

  445. own gospel to

  446. them and grant

  447. to protect them

  448. and show them

  449. the things that

  450. are in this

  451. world designed

  452. in themselves

  453. from the evil

  454. one to lead

  455. them away from

  456. your truth

  457. we pray that

  458. you would make

  459. them wise

  460. unto salvation

  461. remember those

  462. tonight whose

  463. hearts are heavy

  464. with mourning

  465. Lord remember

  466. all who mourn

  467. the passing of

  468. loved ones

  469. each and every

  470. week that goes

  471. by recently

  472. we know that

  473. those belonging

  474. to our

  475. congregation have

  476. experienced

  477. bereavement and

  478. loss

  479. Lord we pray

  480. for each and

  481. every family

  482. and each

  483. individual

  484. we pray for

  485. those who are

  486. still waiting

  487. for preparations

  488. regarding the

  489. funeral of

  490. loved ones

  491. we ask that

  492. you would give

  493. them grace

  494. Lord to

  495. wait upon you

  496. and to know

  497. your direction

  498. and your

  499. comfort at this

  500. time

  501. we pray for

  502. the outcome

  503. of the elections

  504. both locally

  505. and nationally

  506. oh Lord our

  507. God we pray

  508. for those

  509. in our own

  510. locality who

  511. have been

  512. elected to

  513. council

  514. those returning

  515. and those who

  516. are there for

  517. the first time

  518. we pray for

  519. them and ask

  520. that you would

  521. show them your

  522. ways and bless

  523. them especially

  524. Lord we pray

  525. that you would

  526. bring to them

  527. the sense of

  528. the sufficiency

  529. of your word

  530. of your own

  531. laws of your

  532. precepts

  533. help also those

  534. who offered

  535. themselves but

  536. ended up without

  537. being elected

  538. help them we pray

  539. to deal with

  540. that we thank

  541. you for the

  542. interests of so

  543. many and we

  544. pray especially

  545. for those of

  546. your own people

  547. who gave

  548. themselves to

  549. election but

  550. weren't elected

  551. yes Lord we

  552. we do pray for

  553. them and ask

  554. that you would

  555. be pleased to

  556. draw near to

  557. them at this

  558. time and so

  559. we ask that in

  560. all aspects of

  561. our life

  562. individually and

  563. congregationally and

  564. in our locality and

  565. nationally Lord our

  566. God be merciful to

  567. us show us your

  568. ways direct us away

  569. from the ways of

  570. sin and hear us

  571. we pray now and

  572. pardon us for

  573. Jesus sake

  574. amen

  575. let's now read

  576. God's word as we

  577. find it this

  578. evening in 1

  579. Timothy

  580. 1 Timothy in

  581. chapter 6

  582. we'll read

  583. through the whole

  584. chapter from the

  585. beginning

  586. 1 Timothy in

  587. chapter 6

  588. let all who are

  589. under a yoke of

  590. slaves regard their

  591. own masters as

  592. worthy of all

  593. honor so that the

  594. name of God and

  595. the teaching may

  596. not be reviled

  597. those who have

  598. believing masters

  599. must not be

  600. disrespectful on the

  601. ground that they are

  602. brothers rather they

  603. must serve all the

  604. better since those

  605. who benefit by their

  606. good service are

  607. believers and

  608. beloved

  609. teach and urge

  610. these things

  611. if anyone teaches a

  612. different doctrine

  613. and does not agree

  614. with the sound words

  615. of our Lord Jesus

  616. Christ and the

  617. teaching that

  618. accords with

  619. godliness he is

  620. puffed up with

  621. conceit and

  622. understands nothing

  623. he has an

  624. unhealthy craving

  625. for controversy

  626. and for quarrels

  627. about words

  628. which produce

  629. envy

  630. dissension

  631. slander

  632. evil suspicions

  633. and constant

  634. friction among

  635. people who are

  636. depraved in mind

  637. and deprived of

  638. the truth

  639. imagining that

  640. godliness is a

  641. means of gain

  642. now there is

  643. great gain

  644. in godliness

  645. with contentment

  646. for we brought

  647. nothing into the

  648. world and we

  649. cannot take anything

  650. out of the world

  651. but if we have food

  652. and clothing

  653. with these we will

  654. be content

  655. but those who

  656. desire to be rich

  657. fall into temptation

  658. into a snare

  659. into many senseless

  660. and harmful desires

  661. that plunge people

  662. into ruin and

  663. destruction

  664. for the love of

  665. money is a root

  666. of all kinds of

  667. evil

  668. it is through

  669. this craving

  670. that some have

  671. wandered away

  672. from the faith

  673. and pierced

  674. themselves with

  675. many pangs

  676. but as for you

  677. oh man of god

  678. flee these things

  679. pursue righteousness

  680. godliness

  681. faith

  682. love

  683. steadfastness

  684. gentleness

  685. fight the good

  686. fight of the faith

  687. take hold of the

  688. eternal life

  689. to which you are

  690. called and about

  691. which you made

  692. the good confession

  693. in the presence

  694. of many witnesses

  695. i charge you in

  696. the presence of god

  697. who gives life

  698. to all things

  699. and to jesus christ

  700. and of jesus christ

  701. who in his testimony

  702. before pontius pilate

  703. made the good

  704. confession

  705. to keep the

  706. commandment

  707. unstained

  708. and free from

  709. reproach

  710. until the appearing

  711. of our lord jesus christ

  712. which he will display

  713. at the proper time

  714. he who is the

  715. blessed and only

  716. sovereign

  717. the king of kings

  718. and lord of lords

  719. who alone has

  720. immortality

  721. who dwells in

  722. unapproachable light

  723. whom no one has

  724. ever seen or can

  725. see

  726. to him be honor

  727. and eternal dominion

  728. amen

  729. as for the rich

  730. in this present age

  731. charge them

  732. not to be haughty

  733. nor to set their

  734. hopes on the

  735. uncertainty of

  736. riches

  737. but on god

  738. who richly provides

  739. us with everything

  740. to enjoy

  741. they are to do

  742. good

  743. to be rich

  744. in good works

  745. to be generous

  746. and ready to share

  747. thus storing up

  748. treasure for

  749. themselves

  750. as a good

  751. foundation for

  752. the future

  753. so that they may

  754. take hold

  755. of that which

  756. is truly life

  757. oh timothy guard

  758. the deposit

  759. entrusted to you

  760. avoid the irreverent

  761. babble and

  762. contradictions

  763. of what is falsely

  764. called knowledge

  765. for by professing

  766. it

  767. some have swerved

  768. from the faith

  769. grace

  770. be

  771. with you

  772. amen

  773. may god bless

  774. again a reading

  775. of his word

  776. to his own

  777. praise

  778. and glory

  779. i'm going to sing

  780. again in psalm 68

  781. now it's 68

  782. in the

  783. scottish psalter

  784. version

  785. not the

  786. sing psalms

  787. version

  788. that's on your

  789. bulletin sheet

  790. so it's psalm 68

    Psalms 68:7

  791. verses

  792. 7

  793. through to

  794. 11

  795. o god

  796. what time

  797. thou didst

  798. go forth

  799. before thy

  800. people's face

  801. and when

  802. through the

  803. great wilderness

  804. thy glorious

  805. marching was

  806. then that

  807. god's presence

  808. shook the earth

  809. then drops

  810. from heaven

  811. fell

  812. this sinai

  813. shook before

  814. the lord

  815. the god

  816. of israel

  817. through to

  818. verse 11

  819. the lord himself

  820. did give the

  821. word

  822. the word

  823. abroad

  824. did spread

  825. great was

  826. the company

  827. of them

  828. the same

  829. who published

  830. that's psalm 68

  831. on page

  832. 302

  833. in the scottish

  834. psalter

  835. singing from

  836. verse 7

  837. to verse 11

  838. o god

  839. what time

  840. thou didst

  841. go forth

  842. o god

  843. what time

  844. thou didst

  845. go forth

  846. before

  847. thy

  848. people

  849. face

  850. and

  851. when

  852. through

  853. the

  854. great

  855. wilderness

  856. thy

  857. glorious

  858. marching

  859. voice

  860. then

  861. at

  862. god's

  863. presence

  864. shook

  865. the earth

  866. then

  867. drops

  868. from

  869. heaven

  870. fell

  871. this

  872. sign

  873. i shook

  874. before

  875. the lord

  876. the god

  877. of

  878. israel

  879. o god

  880. the

  881. who

  882. do

  883. thy

  884. heritage

  885. should send

  886. a

  887. plenteous

  888. rain

  889. whereby

  890. the

  891. wrennage

  892. weary

  893. walls

  894. didst

  895. it refresh

  896. again

  897. thy

  898. my congregation

  899. then

  900. did make

  901. their

  902. habitation

  903. there

  904. of

  905. thine

  906. own

  907. goodness

  908. for

  909. the

  910. food

  911. o god

  912. thou

  913. didst

  914. prepare

  915. the

  916. lord

  917. himself

  918. did

  919. give

  920. the

  921. word

  922. the

  923. word

  924. abroad

  925. did

  926. spread

  927. great

  928. was

  929. the

  930. company

  931. of

  932. them

  933. the

  934. same

  935. who

  936. publishes

  937. let's

  938. turn

  939. once again

  940. this

  941. evening

  942. to the

  943. epistle

  944. to the

  945. philippians

  946. paul's

  947. letter

  948. to the

  949. philippians

  950. it's

  951. some time

  952. since we

  953. had our

  954. last study

  955. in

  956. philippians

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  957. chapter 4

  958. and we're

  959. going to

  960. continue

  961. tonight

  962. chapter 4

  963. verse 10

  964. and looking

  965. at verses

  966. 10

  967. to 13

  968. that's

  969. philippians

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  970. chapter 4

  971. and reading

  972. from verse

  973. 10

  974. i rejoiced

  975. in the

  976. lord

  977. greatly

  978. that now

  979. at length

  980. you have

  981. revived

  982. your

  983. concern

  984. for me

  985. you were

  986. indeed

  987. concerned

  988. for me

  989. but you

  990. had no

  991. opportunity

  992. not that

  993. i'm speaking

  994. of being

  995. in need

  996. for i have

  997. learned in

  998. whatever

  999. situation

  1000. i am

  1001. to be

  1002. content

  1003. i know

  1004. how to

  1005. be brought

  1006. low

  1007. i know

  1008. how to

  1009. abound

  1010. in

  1011. everything

  1012. in

  1013. every

  1014. in

  1015. any

  1016. and

  1017. every

  1018. circumstance

  1019. i have

  1020. learned

  1021. the secret

  1022. of facing

  1023. plenty

  1024. and hunger

  1025. abundance

  1026. and need

  1027. i can

  1028. do

  1029. all

  1030. things

  1031. through

  1032. him

  1033. who

  1034. strengthens

  1035. me

  1036. well we're

  1037. living as you

  1038. know in very

  1039. challenging

  1040. times

  1041. challenging

  1042. times not

  1043. only in

  1044. a way that

  1045. the gospel

  1046. is being

  1047. challenged

  1048. but challenging

  1049. too in a

  1050. more ordinary

  1051. sense if you

  1052. like challenging

  1053. times with

  1054. regard to

  1055. prices increasing

  1056. in the

  1057. aftermath of

  1058. the covid

  1059. situation and

  1060. the worldwide

  1061. effects of

  1062. that

  1063. challenges

  1064. regarding

  1065. inflation and

  1066. the increasing

  1067. inflation that

  1068. we're hearing

  1069. about and

  1070. that we know

  1071. about in the

  1072. prices themselves

  1073. as you see

  1074. that in your

  1075. shops

  1076. challenging

  1077. times with

  1078. regard to

  1079. closures of

  1080. businesses

  1081. challenges for

  1082. those who have

  1083. lost their

  1084. work and

  1085. are now

  1086. unemployed

  1087. and some

  1088. who find

  1089. difficulty in

  1090. seeking

  1091. alternative

  1092. employment

  1093. this is

  1094. an environment

  1095. for much

  1096. anxiety

  1097. an environment

  1098. in which some

  1099. find a degree

  1100. of hopelessness

  1101. and feeling

  1102. just sidelined

  1103. an environment

  1104. in which we

  1105. find an

  1106. increase in

  1107. substance abuse

  1108. and alcoholism

  1109. and those

  1110. sort of

  1111. excesses

  1112. how can

  1113. anyone be

  1114. content

  1115. in circumstances

  1116. like these

  1117. where do you

  1118. find the

  1119. secret of

  1120. contentment

  1121. what the

  1122. apostle is

  1123. calling here

  1124. the secret of

  1125. contentment

  1126. that he has

  1127. learned

  1128. how can

  1129. anyone be

  1130. content

  1131. surrounded by

  1132. and affected

  1133. by sometimes

  1134. affected directly

  1135. as most of us

  1136. are by these

  1137. issues that

  1138. prove so

  1139. challenging

  1140. for our

  1141. day

  1142. well Paul is

  1143. dealing here

  1144. with what

  1145. we're calling

  1146. the contented

  1147. life because

  1148. that's essentially

  1149. what these

  1150. verses are

  1151. about

  1152. and not

  1153. only are

  1154. we facing

  1155. challenges

  1156. we're facing

  1157. this challenge

  1158. as well

  1159. to live

  1160. a contented

  1161. life

  1162. irrespective

  1163. of what

  1164. our circumstances

  1165. may be

  1166. because it's

  1167. not just

  1168. in times

  1169. of difficulty

  1170. times of

  1171. challenges

  1172. such as we

  1173. mentioned

  1174. that living

  1175. a contented

  1176. life is

  1177. important

  1178. it is

  1179. important

  1180. at all

  1181. times

  1182. to seek

  1183. to live

  1184. a life

  1185. of contentment

  1186. to have

  1187. a contented

  1188. heart

  1189. to have

  1190. a contented

  1191. mind

  1192. to have

  1193. a mind

  1194. that is

  1195. well and

  1196. truly

  1197. content

  1198. with our

  1199. circumstances

  1200. with our

  1201. situation

  1202. with our

  1203. relationship

  1204. with God

  1205. whatever it

  1206. is you're

  1207. thinking about

  1208. and this

  1209. was important

  1210. to the

  1211. apostle

  1212. not just

  1213. in writing

  1214. to the

  1215. Philippians

  1216. it was

  1217. important

  1218. to the

  1219. apostle

  1220. not just

  1221. for his

  1222. own life

  1223. as well

  1224. and those

  1225. of the

  1226. Philippians

  1227. it was

  1228. important

  1229. pastorally

  1230. for the

  1231. apostle

  1232. as we

  1233. read in

  1234. chapter 6

  1235. of 1st

  1236. Timothy

  1237. you can

  1238. see there

  1239. in verses

  1240. 6 to

  1241. 10

  1242. how important

  1243. it was

  1244. for the

  1245. apostle

  1246. to commend

  1247. contentment

  1248. and how

  1249. one comes

  1250. about to

  1251. be content

  1252. in his

  1253. preaching

  1254. it's something

  1255. obviously

  1256. built into

  1257. his preaching

  1258. it's something

  1259. obviously

  1260. that should

  1261. be important

  1262. to us

  1263. in our

  1264. preaching

  1265. of the

  1266. gospel

  1267. where does

  1268. a person

  1269. get contentment

  1270. from

  1271. how does

  1272. a person

  1273. come

  1274. to be

  1275. content

  1276. in their

  1277. lives

  1278. in the

  1279. world

  1280. in which

  1281. we are

  1282. placed

  1283. and you

  1284. look at

  1285. the

  1286. verses

  1287. 17 to

  1288. 19

  1289. of that

  1290. chapter

  1291. where he

  1292. talks there

  1293. about the

  1294. danger

  1295. of seeking

  1296. to follow

  1297. riches

  1298. for their

  1299. own sake

  1300. he says

  1301. for the rich

  1302. in this

  1303. present age

  1304. as for

  1305. them

  1306. charge them

  1307. not to

  1308. be haughty

  1309. or set

  1310. their hopes

  1311. on the

  1312. uncertainty

  1313. of riches

  1314. but on

  1315. God

  1316. who richly

  1317. provides us

  1318. with everything

  1319. to enjoy

  1320. there to

  1321. be good

  1322. to be

  1323. rich

  1324. in good

  1325. works

  1326. you see

  1327. the way

  1328. Paul plays

  1329. on the

  1330. word rich

  1331. and riches

  1332. throughout that

  1333. passage there

  1334. they are not

  1335. to set their

  1336. hope on the

  1337. uncertainty

  1338. of riches

  1339. but rather

  1340. to look to

  1341. God

  1342. who richly

  1343. gives

  1344. good works

  1345. and is

  1346. therefore able

  1347. to give

  1348. the contentment

  1349. that we

  1350. require

  1351. and that's

  1352. really what

  1353. you have

  1354. in the

  1355. Philippians

  1356. passage

  1357. as well

  1358. what is

  1359. a contented

  1360. life

  1361. how do you

  1362. experience

  1363. contentment

  1364. where does

  1365. it come

  1366. from

  1367. what are

  1368. the elements

  1369. of contentment

  1370. for yourself

  1371. for myself

  1372. tonight

  1373. if you ask

  1374. yourself the

  1375. question

  1376. how can I

  1377. have a

  1378. contented

  1379. heart

  1380. if I'm

  1381. surrounded by

  1382. challenges

  1383. and uncertainties

  1384. if I know

  1385. of changes

  1386. in my life

  1387. if I know

  1388. of things

  1389. that I'm

  1390. struggling

  1391. with

  1392. where can I

  1393. find contentment

  1394. how can I

  1395. possibly have

  1396. contentment

  1397. true contentment

  1398. in that

  1399. situation

  1400. well Paul

  1401. gives us

  1402. here

  1403. three main

  1404. elements

  1405. to it

  1406. I'm going

  1407. to take

  1408. these in

  1409. turn

  1410. he talks

  1411. first of

  1412. all about

  1413. thankfulness

  1414. you can see

  1415. that from

  1416. verse 8

  1417. onwards

  1418. and especially

  1419. in verse 10

  1420. I rejoiced

  1421. in the Lord

  1422. greatly

  1423. that now

  1424. at length

  1425. you have

  1426. revived

  1427. your concern

  1428. for me

  1429. you are

  1430. indeed

  1431. concerned

  1432. for me

  1433. but you

  1434. had no

  1435. opportunity

  1436. you can

  1437. see

  1438. how he

  1439. is later

  1440. on in the

  1441. passage

  1442. that follows

  1443. talking about

  1444. the gift

  1445. that they

  1446. have sent

  1447. to him

  1448. verse 18

  1449. I have

  1450. received

  1451. full payment

  1452. and more

  1453. I am well

  1454. supplied

  1455. having received

  1456. from Epaphroditus

  1457. the gifts

  1458. that you

  1459. said

  1460. so he is

  1461. thankful

  1462. to the

  1463. Philippians

  1464. thankful of

  1465. course to

  1466. God most

  1467. of all

  1468. but he's

  1469. thankful

  1470. that the

  1471. Philippians

  1472. have shown

  1473. themselves

  1474. in their

  1475. kindness

  1476. to him

  1477. by sending

  1478. gifts

  1479. we're not

  1480. told what

  1481. they were

  1482. but Epaphroditus

  1483. came with

  1484. this gift

  1485. to Paul

  1486. and he is

  1487. truly thankful

  1488. for it

  1489. now that's

  1490. an essential

  1491. element

  1492. of a

  1493. contented

  1494. life

  1495. you and I

  1496. will never

  1497. have a

  1498. contented

  1499. life

  1500. if we are

  1501. not thankful

  1502. to God

  1503. if we are

  1504. not thankful

  1505. even for the

  1506. least of his

  1507. mercies

  1508. because

  1509. thankfulness

  1510. is such

  1511. an important

  1512. ingredient

  1513. in a

  1514. life

  1515. that's

  1516. in tune

  1517. with God

  1518. and in

  1519. tune

  1520. with God's

  1521. providence

  1522. and God's

  1523. wisdom

  1524. so thankfulness

  1525. is the first

  1526. element

  1527. in a

  1528. contented

  1529. life

  1530. and then

  1531. secondly

  1532. you find

  1533. verses

  1534. 11 to

  1535. 12

  1536. or 11

  1537. to 13

  1538. the second

  1539. element

  1540. is

  1541. dependence

  1542. Paul says

  1543. he's thankful

  1544. for the gift

  1545. but he's

  1546. saying not

  1547. that I

  1548. really

  1549. was in

  1550. dire

  1551. need

  1552. of it

  1553. because

  1554. I've

  1555. learned

  1556. in

  1557. whatsoever

  1558. situation

  1559. I am

  1560. to be

  1561. content

  1562. I know

  1563. how to

  1564. be brought

  1565. low

  1566. I know

  1567. how to

  1568. abound

  1569. in every

  1570. and any

  1571. circumstance

  1572. I have

  1573. learned

  1574. the secret

  1575. of facing

  1576. plenty

  1577. and hunger

  1578. abundance

  1579. and need

  1580. I can do

  1581. all things

  1582. through him

  1583. who strengthens

  1584. me

  1585. in other

  1586. words

  1587. he's saying

  1588. my contentment

  1589. actually comes

  1590. as he's

  1591. speaking to the

  1592. Philippians

  1593. and setting

  1594. these things

  1595. forth for them

  1596. to follow

  1597. and to apply

  1598. in their own

  1599. lives

  1600. his contentment

  1601. is not just

  1602. something that

  1603. involves thankfulness

  1604. to God

  1605. it involves

  1606. dependence

  1607. upon Christ

  1608. dependence

  1609. on God

  1610. he looks

  1611. for his

  1612. sufficiency

  1613. in Jesus

  1614. himself

  1615. in God

  1616. himself

  1617. there's

  1618. thankfulness

  1619. there's

  1620. dependence

  1621. and thirdly

  1622. there is

  1623. strengthening

  1624. because ultimately

  1625. his contentment

  1626. comes from

  1627. Jesus himself

  1628. comes from

  1629. God

  1630. as you see

  1631. in verse

  1632. 13

  1633. I can

  1634. do all

  1635. things

  1636. through him

  1637. who strengthens

  1638. me

  1639. so it doesn't

  1640. matter whether

  1641. Paul is

  1642. experiencing

  1643. what he calls

  1644. being brought

  1645. low

  1646. or what he

  1647. calls

  1648. abounding

  1649. whether it's

  1650. really something

  1651. in which he

  1652. lacks certain

  1653. things

  1654. physically

  1655. or financially

  1656. or whether he

  1657. is actually

  1658. full of as

  1659. much as

  1660. possible he

  1661. could have

  1662. in this

  1663. life

  1664. he's saying

  1665. I can

  1666. do all

  1667. things

  1668. through him

  1669. who fills

  1670. me with

  1671. strength

  1672. that's what

  1673. he means

  1674. who strengthens

  1675. me

  1676. his contentment

  1677. comes from

  1678. the supply

  1679. that Jesus

  1680. gives him

  1681. on a daily

  1682. basis

  1683. and that too

  1684. is in many ways

  1685. the key to

  1686. contentment for

  1687. ourselves

  1688. the contented

  1689. life

  1690. is the life

  1691. that comes

  1692. to be supplied

  1693. by Jesus

  1694. on a daily

  1695. basis

  1696. with the grace

  1697. with the ability

  1698. with the

  1699. mindset

  1700. with everything

  1701. that is to

  1702. do with

  1703. contentment

  1704. I can do

  1705. all things

  1706. through him

  1707. who strengthens

  1708. me

  1709. and he lies

  1710. content

  1711. in the supply

  1712. that Jesus

  1713. brings

  1714. because

  1715. it's not just

  1716. a matter of

  1717. those who

  1718. are facing

  1719. deprivation

  1720. that have a

  1721. challenge

  1722. of being

  1723. content

  1724. those who

  1725. are facing

  1726. poverty

  1727. for example

  1728. in Paul's

  1729. day

  1730. and he

  1731. very much

  1732. is aware

  1733. of that

  1734. as he

  1735. writes his

  1736. letters

  1737. it's

  1738. a challenge

  1739. how to

  1740. be content

  1741. if we're

  1742. on the

  1743. breadline

  1744. if we're

  1745. facing

  1746. though many

  1747. of us

  1748. aren't

  1749. of course

  1750. nevertheless

  1751. those in

  1752. the world

  1753. that's a

  1754. difficulty

  1755. for them

  1756. but it's

  1757. equally so

  1758. for those

  1759. who are

  1760. millionaires

  1761. where does

  1762. a millionaire

  1763. find contentment

  1764. because they

  1765. will tell you

  1766. themselves

  1767. mostly

  1768. that although

  1769. their millions

  1770. bring them

  1771. a luxurious

  1772. lifetime

  1773. a comfortable

  1774. lifetime

  1775. it does not

  1776. guarantee

  1777. contentment

  1778. contentment

  1779. is not

  1780. the same

  1781. thing

  1782. as comfort

  1783. contentment

  1784. in the

  1785. apostles

  1786. terms

  1787. is being

  1788. thankful

  1789. to God

  1790. being dependent

  1791. on God

  1792. being strengthened

  1793. by Christ

  1794. let's look at

  1795. these briefly

  1796. in turn

  1797. here is Paul

  1798. saying to the

  1799. Philippians

  1800. here in verse

  1801. 18

  1802. I have received

  1803. full payment

  1804. I didn't seek

  1805. this gift

  1806. but I seek

  1807. the fruit

  1808. that increases

  1809. to your credit

  1810. I have received

  1811. full payment

  1812. and more

  1813. I am well

  1814. supplied

  1815. having received

  1816. from Epaphroditus

  1817. the gift

  1818. you sent

  1819. a fragrant

  1820. offering

  1821. a sacrifice

  1822. acceptable

  1823. and pleasing

  1824. to God

  1825. he uses

  1826. very strong

  1827. terms

  1828. to show

  1829. the extent

  1830. of his

  1831. thankful

  1832. now he is

  1833. treading a

  1834. very fine

  1835. line here

  1836. and it is

  1837. a line

  1838. that many

  1839. of us

  1840. actually know

  1841. for ourselves

  1842. he doesn't

  1843. want in

  1844. any way

  1845. to appear

  1846. ungrateful

  1847. and so

  1848. he is

  1849. thankful

  1850. for the

  1851. gifts

  1852. the

  1853. Philippians

  1854. have sent

  1855. him

  1856. but at

  1857. the same

  1858. time

  1859. on the

  1860. other

  1861. side

  1862. of things

  1863. he doesn't

  1864. want to

  1865. make it

  1866. appear

  1867. that he's

  1868. being covetous

  1869. that he really

  1870. wanted such

  1871. things for himself

  1872. and that is

  1873. something that he

  1874. would seek

  1875. from them

  1876. in the future

  1877. it's that

  1878. fine line

  1879. between

  1880. being thankful

  1881. for what

  1882. they've sent

  1883. and yet at

  1884. the same

  1885. time saying

  1886. not that I'm

  1887. speaking of

  1888. being in need

  1889. I didn't

  1890. seek this

  1891. I don't

  1892. necessarily

  1893. want any

  1894. more but I'm

  1895. thankful for

  1896. what you've

  1897. sent

  1898. and if we

  1899. speak personally

  1900. I know this

  1901. is something

  1902. that we find

  1903. ourselves in

  1904. in ministry

  1905. we are so

  1906. dependent in

  1907. many ways on

  1908. the church's

  1909. givings

  1910. we're paid

  1911. out of the

  1912. contributions

  1913. in our

  1914. stipends

  1915. from your

  1916. givings

  1917. and believe

  1918. me we're

  1919. grateful for

  1920. that

  1921. I know

  1922. our

  1923. thankfulness

  1924. ultimately

  1925. is to

  1926. God

  1927. who

  1928. supplies

  1929. all

  1930. things

  1931. for us

  1932. but that's

  1933. where we

  1934. are placed

  1935. as preachers

  1936. of the

  1937. gospel

  1938. and it's

  1939. that fine

  1940. line between

  1941. saying we're

  1942. really grateful

  1943. to you

  1944. but we're

  1945. not seeking

  1946. we're not

  1947. covetous

  1948. we're not

  1949. actually

  1950. living so

  1951. that you

  1952. will keep

  1953. on giving

  1954. to us

  1955. it's that

  1956. line that he's

  1957. following here

  1958. where he wants

  1959. them to be

  1960. truly aware

  1961. of his

  1962. thankfulness

  1963. and yet

  1964. he is

  1965. not at all

  1966. saying that he

  1967. is being

  1968. covetous

  1969. in regard

  1970. to it

  1971. now

  1972. thankfulness

  1973. therefore

  1974. is something

  1975. that's so

  1976. crucial to

  1977. our contentment

  1978. if we're going

  1979. to be content

  1980. with what we

  1981. have

  1982. it doesn't

  1983. mean that you

  1984. don't improve

  1985. life

  1986. it doesn't

  1987. mean it's

  1988. wrong to

  1989. seek an

  1990. increase in

  1991. your wealth

  1992. or things

  1993. like that

  1994. just to have

  1995. something in

  1996. hand by

  1997. which you're

  1998. able to

  1999. have more

  2000. comfort

  2001. or be

  2002. more assured

  2003. and so on

  2004. doesn't mean

  2005. that that's

  2006. wrong

  2007. but it is

  2008. and

  2009. but

  2010. thankfulness

  2011. and

  2012. contentment

  2013. is the

  2014. enemy of

  2015. covetousness

  2016. or you can

  2017. put it the

  2018. other way

  2019. covetousness

  2020. is the

  2021. enemy of

  2022. contentment

  2023. if we

  2024. have a

  2025. coveting

  2026. heart

  2027. if we

  2028. have a

  2029. heart

  2030. that really

  2031. reaches out

  2032. and wants

  2033. for its own

  2034. sake more

  2035. of the things

  2036. of this

  2037. world

  2038. whether it's

  2039. material issues

  2040. other than

  2041. finance or

  2042. whether it's

  2043. money itself

  2044. or whatever

  2045. or the

  2046. applause of

  2047. human beings

  2048. everything to do

  2049. with this

  2050. world

  2051. and its

  2052. worldiness

  2053. is something

  2054. that we

  2055. could

  2056. covet and

  2057. sometimes

  2058. do covet

  2059. covetousness

  2060. is the

  2061. enemy of

  2062. contentment

  2063. if you and

  2064. I are

  2065. coveting

  2066. something

  2067. for its

  2068. own

  2069. sake

  2070. even if

  2071. it's

  2072. good in

  2073. itself

  2074. that

  2075. covetousness

  2076. that drive

  2077. of our

  2078. hearts

  2079. which is

  2080. there

  2081. naturally

  2082. will

  2083. actually

  2084. be at

  2085. odds

  2086. with our

  2087. contentment

  2088. the

  2089. contentment

  2090. for example

  2091. that the

  2092. people of

  2093. Israel

  2094. it's very

  2095. interesting

  2096. comparison

  2097. let me

  2098. just

  2099. refer to

  2100. first of

  2101. all

  2102. Exodus

    Exodus 17 chapter mention

  2103. chapter

  2104. 17

  2105. and

  2106. verse

  2107. 7

  2108. especially

  2109. remember

  2110. that incident

  2111. very well

  2112. it's

  2113. the waters

  2114. of

  2115. Meribah

  2116. where the

  2117. people

  2118. murmured

  2119. against

  2120. and complained

  2121. about

  2122. their

  2123. situation

  2124. complaining

  2125. against

  2126. Moses

  2127. but

  2128. ultimately

  2129. complaining

  2130. against

  2131. God

  2132. where

  2133. in

  2134. Exodus

    Exodus 17 chapter mention

  2135. chapter

  2136. 17

  2137. and

  2138. verse

  2139. 7

  2140. he

  2141. called

  2142. the

  2143. name

  2144. of

  2145. the

  2146. place

  2147. Massah

  2148. and

  2149. Meribah

  2150. because

  2151. of the

  2152. quarreling

  2153. of the

  2154. people

  2155. of Israel

  2156. and

  2157. because

  2158. they

  2159. tested

  2160. the

  2161. Lord

  2162. by

  2163. saying

  2164. is

  2165. the

  2166. Lord

  2167. among

  2168. us

  2169. or

  2170. not

  2171. you

  2172. see

  2173. their

  2174. situation

  2175. where

  2176. they

  2177. couldn't

  2178. find

  2179. water

  2180. not

  2181. that

  2182. long

  2183. after

  2184. leaving

  2185. Egypt

  2186. and

  2187. their

  2188. hearts

  2189. were

  2190. really

  2191. hankering

  2192. back

  2193. after

  2194. the

  2195. things

  2196. of

  2197. Egypt

  2198. and

  2199. this

  2200. is

  2201. what

  2202. they

  2203. were

  2204. really

  2205. saying

  2206. complaining

  2207. against

  2208. Moses

  2209. and

  2210. ultimately

  2211. against

  2212. God

  2213. why did

  2214. you

  2215. bring

  2216. us

  2217. out

  2218. of

  2219. Egypt

  2220. to

  2221. kill

  2222. us

  2223. and

  2224. our

  2225. children

  2226. and

  2227. our

  2228. livestock

  2229. with

  2230. thirst

  2231. and

  2232. this

  2233. is

  2234. what

  2235. the name

  2236. was called

  2237. Meribah

  2238. because

  2239. of that

  2240. they were

  2241. really

  2242. quarreling

  2243. with the

  2244. Lord

  2245. ultimately

  2246. discontentment

  2247. with their

  2248. lot

  2249. discontentment

  2250. with the

  2251. providence

  2252. of God

  2253. for them

  2254. discontentment

  2255. and

  2256. impatience

  2257. which also

  2258. very often

  2259. is along

  2260. with discontentment

  2261. seeking

  2262. that

  2263. they would

  2264. actually go

  2265. back to

  2266. Egypt

  2267. would not

  2268. be better

  2269. but what's

  2270. interesting

  2271. it's saying

  2272. there

  2273. that

  2274. they

  2275. tested

  2276. the

  2277. Lord

  2278. they

  2279. put

  2280. the

  2281. Lord

  2282. to

  2283. the

  2284. test

  2285. quarreling

  2286. with

  2287. him

  2288. but

  2289. when

  2290. you

  2291. go

  2292. to

  2293. the

  2294. book

  2295. of

  2296. Psalms

  2297. you

  2298. find

  2299. another

  2300. angle

  2301. on

  2302. this

  2303. in

  2304. Psalm

  2305. 81

  2306. and

  2307. in

  2308. Psalm

  2309. 81

  2310. the

  2311. same

  2312. incident

  2313. is

  2314. referred

  2315. to

  2316. giving

  2317. that

  2318. other

  2319. angle

  2320. on

  2321. it

  2322. if

  2323. you

  2324. read

  2325. Psalm

  2326. 81

  2327. and

  2328. verse

  2329. 7

  2330. God

  2331. is

  2332. here

  2333. speaking

  2334. to

  2335. the

  2336. people

  2337. in

  2338. distress

  2339. you

  2340. called

  2341. and

  2342. I

  2343. delivered

  2344. you

  2345. I

  2346. answered

  2347. you

  2348. in

  2349. I

  2350. tested

  2351. you

  2352. at

  2353. the

  2354. waters

  2355. of

  2356. Meribah

  2357. hear

  2358. O

  2359. my

  2360. people

  2361. while

  2362. I

  2363. admonish

  2364. you

  2365. O

  2366. Israel

  2367. if

  2368. you

  2369. would

  2370. but

  2371. listen

  2372. to

  2373. me

  2374. there

  2375. shall

  2376. be

  2377. no

  2378. strange

  2379. God

  2380. among

  2381. you

  2382. you

  2383. shall

  2384. not

  2385. bow

  2386. down

  2387. to

  2388. a

  2389. foreign

  2390. God

  2391. and

  2392. there

  2393. he

  2394. would

  2395. have

  2396. fed

  2397. them

  2398. with

  2399. the

  2400. finest

  2401. of

  2402. the

  2403. wheat

  2404. with

  2405. honey

  2406. from

  2407. the

  2408. rock

  2409. I

  2410. would

  2411. satisfy

  2412. you

  2413. know

  2414. you

  2415. see

  2416. the

  2417. change

  2418. the

  2419. subtle

  2420. change

  2421. there

  2422. in

  2423. Exodus

  2424. 17

  2425. the

  2426. emphasis

  2427. is on

  2428. them

  2429. testing

  2430. God

  2431. them

  2432. putting

  2433. God

  2434. to

  2435. the

  2436. test

  2437. them

  2438. complaining

  2439. about

  2440. God

  2441. and

  2442. God

  2443. is

  2444. actually

  2445. saying

  2446. Psalm

  2447. 81

  2448. actually

  2449. it

  2450. was

  2451. the

  2452. other way

  2453. about

  2454. though

  2455. they

  2456. didn't

  2457. see

  2458. it

  2459. it

  2460. was

  2461. they

  2462. who

  2463. were

  2464. being

  2465. tested

  2466. in

  2467. the

  2468. situation

  2469. God

  2470. brought

  2471. about

  2472. whether

  2473. they

  2474. would

  2475. be

  2476. true

  2477. to

  2478. him

  2479. or

  2480. not

  2481. whether

  2482. they

  2483. would

  2484. believe

  2485. in

  2486. him

  2487. not

  2488. whether

  2489. they

  2490. would

  2491. accept

  2492. his

  2493. wisdom

  2494. that

  2495. was

  2496. the

  2497. test

  2498. that

  2499. was

  2500. going

  2501. on

  2502. they

  2503. were

  2504. being

  2505. tested

  2506. and

  2507. they

  2508. were

  2509. found

  2510. out

  2511. because

  2512. they

  2513. were

  2514. discontent

  2515. with

  2516. God's

  2517. arrangement

  2518. thankfulness

  2519. was

  2520. missing

  2521. from

  2522. their

  2523. program

  2524. and

  2525. thankfulness

  2526. for you

  2527. and for

  2528. me

  2529. tonight

  2530. is

  2531. such

  2532. an

  2533. important

  2534. ingredient

  2535. in

  2536. being

  2537. content

  2538. are

  2539. we

  2540. thankful

  2541. tonight

  2542. with

  2543. our

  2544. lot

  2545. are

  2546. we

  2547. thankful

  2548. that

  2549. God

  2550. is

  2551. in

  2552. charge

  2553. of

  2554. our

  2555. lives

  2556. are

  2557. we

  2558. thankful

  2559. that

  2560. he's

  2561. not

  2562. left

  2563. us

  2564. to

  2565. ourselves

  2566. to

  2567. our

  2568. own

  2569. wisdom

  2570. are

  2571. we

  2572. thankful

  2573. for

  2574. the

  2575. things

  2576. that

  2577. he's

  2578. given

  2579. us

  2580. in

  2581. his

  2582. providence

  2583. even

  2584. though

  2585. others

  2586. may

  2587. have

  2588. many

  2589. more

  2590. things

  2591. even

  2592. though

  2593. others

  2594. may

  2595. have

  2596. more

  2597. of

  2598. the

  2599. things

  2600. that

  2601. we

  2602. have

  2603. from

  2604. day

  2605. to

  2606. day

  2607. are

  2608. we

  2609. thankful

  2610. for

  2611. certainly

  2612. it seems

  2613. to me

  2614. in

  2615. times

  2616. gone

  2617. by

  2618. that

  2619. people

  2620. in

  2621. our

  2622. own

  2623. situation

  2624. in

  2625. our

  2626. own

  2627. locality

  2628. had

  2629. more

  2630. thankfulness

  2631. for

  2632. what

  2633. they

  2634. had

  2635. than

  2636. we

  2637. tend

  2638. to

  2639. have

  2640. today

  2641. friends

  2642. we

  2643. live

  2644. in

  2645. a

  2646. world

  2647. that

  2648. has

  2649. so

  2650. little

  2651. thankfulness

  2652. that

  2653. hardly

  2654. ever

  2655. stops

  2656. to

  2657. thank

  2658. God

  2659. how

  2660. many

  2661. people

  2662. say

  2663. grace

  2664. before

  2665. they

  2666. eat

  2667. how

  2668. many

  2669. people

  2670. think

  2671. of

  2672. who

  2673. has

  2674. actually

  2675. ultimately

  2676. provided

  2677. for

  2678. them

  2679. the

  2680. resources

  2681. that

  2682. they

  2683. have

  2684. whether

  2685. they're

  2686. small

  2687. or

  2688. great

  2689. whether

  2690. they

  2691. compare

  2692. with

  2693. others

  2694. acceptably

  2695. or

  2696. not

  2697. tonight

  2698. one of

  2699. the

  2700. things

  2701. that

  2702. should

  2703. characterize

  2704. us

  2705. from

  2706. day

  2707. to

  2708. day

  2709. is

  2710. thankful

  2711. be

  2712. thankful

  2713. to

  2714. God

  2715. every

  2716. morning

  2717. you

  2718. wake

  2719. be

  2720. thankful

  2721. that

  2722. he's

  2723. kept

  2724. you

  2725. through

  2726. the

  2727. night

  2728. be

  2729. thankful

  2730. as

  2731. you

  2732. take

  2733. your

  2734. breakfast

  2735. be

  2736. thankful

  2737. that

  2738. you have

  2739. that

  2740. to put

  2741. on

  2742. your

  2743. table

  2744. be

  2745. thankful

  2746. if

  2747. you

  2748. have

  2749. work

  2750. that

  2751. God

  2752. has

  2753. given

  2754. you

  2755. a

  2756. way

  2757. of

  2758. earning

  2759. income

  2760. for

  2761. your

  2762. family

  2763. be

  2764. thankful

  2765. if

  2766. you've

  2767. been

  2768. seen

  2769. through

  2770. work

  2771. successfully

  2772. if

  2773. you're

  2774. retired

  2775. if

  2776. you've

  2777. come

  2778. to

  2779. enjoy

  2780. the

  2781. benefits

  2782. of

  2783. retirement

  2784. even

  2785. though

  2786. you

  2787. might

  2788. not

  2789. have

  2790. a

  2791. massive

  2792. retirement

  2793. pot

  2794. like

  2795. you

  2796. might

  2797. see

  2798. others

  2799. have

  2800. shouldn't

  2801. we

  2802. be

  2803. content

  2804. if

  2805. we

  2806. have

  2807. food

  2808. and

  2809. clothing

  2810. as

  2811. we

  2812. read

  2813. in

  2814. 1st

  2815. Timothy

  2816. with

  2817. these

  2818. let's

  2819. be

  2820. content

  2821. thankfulness

  2822. to

  2823. God

  2824. remember

  2825. back

  2826. in

  2827. Philippians

  2828. we

  2829. saw

  2830. how

  2831. in

  2832. verse

  2833. 6

  2834. of

  2835. this

  2836. same

  2837. chapter

  2838. rejoice

  2839. in

  2840. the

  2841. Lord

  2842. always

  2843. again

  2844. I

  2845. say

  2846. rejoice

  2847. you

  2848. see

  2849. that's

  2850. the

  2851. same

  2852. alongside

  2853. of

  2854. thankfulness

  2855. you

  2856. have

  2857. the

  2858. rejoicing

  2859. in

  2860. the

  2861. Lord

  2862. the

  2863. provision

  2864. of

  2865. the

  2866. Lord

  2867. himself

  2868. but

  2869. he

  2870. went

  2871. on

  2872. to

  2873. say

  2874. don't

  2875. be

  2876. anxious

  2877. about

  2878. anything

  2879. but

  2880. in

  2881. everything

  2882. by

  2883. prayer

  2884. and

  2885. supplication

  2886. with

  2887. thanksgiving

  2888. let your

  2889. request

  2890. be made

  2891. known

  2892. to

  2893. God

  2894. if

  2895. I

  2896. were

  2897. to

  2898. come

  2899. before

  2900. God

  2901. and

  2902. plead

  2903. with

  2904. him

  2905. to

  2906. give

  2907. me

  2908. certain

  2909. things

2910. to me, or for my family, or for whatever else. But if I do that without a word of thankfulness,

2911. God is saying, do you really think that you're praying as you should be?

2912. Because if I'm missing out to thankfulness, then I'm being selfish. And if I'm being selfish,

2913. I will never be content in the contentment that God commends to me here in the gospel.

2914. So there's the first thing, thankfulness. We could elaborate on that in many ways,

2915. but let's move on secondly to dependence. Here he is in verse 11, not that I'm speaking of being in

2916. need, for I've learned in whatsoever situation I am to be content. And he goes on, as we saw

2917. through, to saying I can do all things through him who strengthens me. Now the first thing of interest

2918. here is that he's saying, I have learned to be content. And that shows you that this contentment,

2919. the contented heart, is not something that comes all at once. It's something that Paul himself had

2920. to work at. We mustn't think that somebody like the Apostle Paul from the day that he was converted just

2921. lived a completely contented life, that he didn't have to work at any of the things that he's actually

2922. saying to others when he's writing these epistles to them. No, he's saying, I learned in whatsoever

2923. situation I am to be content. And in verses 11 to 12, he tells us, I know how to be brought low.

2924. I know how to abound in any and every circumstance. I've learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger,

2925. abundance and need. You see, he's saying it again. I have learned. I have learned.

2926. Contentment. It's something that he himself came by process of experience to learn and to increase

2927. and to grow in. And where do you learn contentment? Well, he's telling us here it's in the things of

2928. providence from day to day in our daily lives. I have learned in whatsoever my circumstances are,

2929. whether it is indeed being brought low or abounding, I have learned therein to be content.

2930. Friends, tonight, providence, as we call it, the way that God has arranged our life, which will be so

2931. different one person from another in many respects, but providence, that arrangement that God has of

2932. our lives is our school. It's our college. It's our university. It's where we learn the things of God

2933. himself. And it's where we learn contentment. That's where our contentment is learned. Just as you learn

2934. so much else that's true of a Christian life, that's where it's actually learned. That's where

2935. it's tested. That's where it's practiced. That's where everything to do with the life of a Christian

2936. is really worked out. It's not in the privacy of your own home, though it is there as well,

2937. but it is in the public sphere. It's where people see you. It's where you interact with them. It's where

2938. you work. It's where you go to school. It's all of those things on an everyday basis.

2939. I have learned to be content. And indeed, he uses here in verse 12, he says,

2940. I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger. Now, it's interesting that he uses that

2941. word because scholars tell us that this was a word that was used by the philosophers in the Greek world

2942. in the mystery religions of the time. Certain philosophies that, like the Stoics, for example,

2943. they were a prime example of this, and their approach to life was, well, here are your

2944. difficulties. Here are your challenges. Here are all the different aspects of your experiences day

2945. by day. And when you're really facing a time of challenge and difficulty, steal yourself against

2946. it. Close it off from your mind. Close your mind away from it. Look into yourself and just

2947. build yourself up against these things as if they're not there. Well, that's not what the apostle

2948. is saying, but he is using a word probably deliberately just by way of contrasting the

2949. Christian approach. I have learned the secret of being content. But the secret of being content for

2950. the apostle is not to steal himself against or firm up himself against the things that are happening

2951. in his life, his experiences, as if they are just closed out and he doesn't want to know about them

2952. or deal with them and just try and move on and build himself up. No, he says, I accept them.

2953. And I accept them as God-given. And I accept them as God-arranged. And I accept them as the wisdom

2954. of God has arranged for me. Whatever I may think of them, whatever I may make of them, however I may

2955. complain about them, however they may hurt me, however the challenges of these come my way, saying,

2956. I have learned the secret of facing hunger and abundance and need. Because I'm not looking to

2957. my own resources, to my own abilities. He's looking to Jesus. He's looking to himself. So, well, Paul,

2958. it's a deliberate contrast. You see the things that come in your providence day by day.

2959. As we say, that's the school where you're set in order to learn contentment, where you learn

2960. the wisdom of God in arranging your life the way it is. But it's where you learn dependence upon God

2961. as well. And in order to be content, you need to be dependent. You need to rely on Christ himself.

2962. You need to find him in all the different changes of life as being your sufficiency at all times.

2963. I'm sure you all know the story, the true story of Horatius Spafford. I think I've mentioned this

2964. before. The man who wrote the hymn, It Is Well With My Soul. Well, in 1871, Stafford's four-year-old son

2965. died. And that same year, there was a great fire in Chicago in the USA that seriously affected his

2966. property, his business, and devalued so much of what was left of his business after the fire.

2967. And he sent his wife and four daughters across the Atlantic to England. And he was going to join

2968. him after he had seen to some of the business interests that he had to deal with. And they

2969. went across on a ship called the SS Ville du Havre in 1873. And in the middle of the Atlantic,

2970. that ship collided with another ship called the Loch Erne and sank very soon afterwards with a great loss

2971. of life. And Spafford received a very sad telegram from his wife, Anna. And all it said on the telegraph

2972. was, Saved alone. Their four daughters had been drowned in that tragedy. Saved alone.

2973. And he set off to cross the Atlantic to join his wife and to try and bring her home. And on the way

2974. across, Stafford was summoned up to the bridge by the captain. And the captain said to him,

2975. as far as we can reckon, this is exactly the location or the place where the Ville du Havre went down,

2976. where his daughters were lost. So he returned to the cabin. And later that night, he wrote these words,

2977. which became the hymn, It is well with my soul. When peace like a river attendeth my way,

2978. when sorrows like sea billows roll, whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, it is well,

2979. it is well with my soul. Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, let this blessed assurance

2980. control that Christ has regarded my helpless estate and has shed his own blood for my soul.

2981. It is well, it is well with my soul, with my soul. It is well, it is well with my soul.

2982. Can you and I say that tonight? The variety of circumstances in this church tonight is significant.

2983. Nobody may even share the experience that you're going through right now.

2984. The providences that God has given you may be significantly different to anyone else's,

2985. and it may be the same for me. But can I say and can you say, are we glad to be able to say,

2986. whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, it is well, it is well with my soul.

2987. I have learned, he said. Paul said, the secret of contentment. The key to it is Christ himself.

2988. And that's the third point. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

2989. The things that he mentions here in verse 13, I can do all things, are obviously the things

2990. that are specifically mentioned in verse 12. The ways in which he's brought low, the way in which

2991. he's abounding, whatever actually may have been involved in that, these were his circumstances,

2992. generally speaking. But this is the key to his contentment more than anything else.

2993. Yes, the contented life involves thankfulness. The contented life involves dependence upon God.

2994. But the contented life itself is not something which rests on these. They are but the expressions

2995. of a contented life or the means towards being content. But contentment itself comes

2996. from the filling that Christ fills our souls with, who fills me with strength. I can do

2997. all things through him or in him who fills me with strength. What is the cause? What is the ground

2998. of Paul's contentment? Where does he find the key to his contentment? It's not in his own thankfulness.

2999. It's not in his own dependence. So that's part of the whole package. The key to it is what Jesus is,

3000. who Jesus is, what Jesus is doing in his life. And the word strengthens is an important verb. It's

3001. what grammarians call a causative verb. It's something in which there is a source involved.

3002. And he's talking here about God or about Jesus. I can do all things through him who strengthens,

3003. who causes me to be strengthened, who fills me with strength. That's his daily experience. That's his

3004. daily desire. That's his daily walk after contentment, looking for contentment. The secret,

3005. the key to his contentment is that Christ fills his soul with strength. How can you face the

3006. challenges of today? How can you face the challenges of this present time? How can you actually live a

3007. contented life amongst the things we mentioned at the beginning of our study tonight? Well, this is the

3008. key to it. This is the key that opens the way to a contentment and a contented life. I can do all

3009. things through him who fills me with strength. Christ pouring his power into the apostle's life.

3010. Is that where you're looking for your contentment? As you listen to the world, as you listen to the

3011. voices of the world, as you listen to the philosophies of the world and the religions of the world,

3012. as you face all of these alternatives to Jesus and to the gospel, here's the question for me tonight.

3013. Here's the question for you. What am I seeking contentment from? Where is my contented life to

3014. be based? How can I reach more contentment than I have? Well, not in the things of the world.

3015. Not in the things Paul mentioned in his letter to Timothy, as we read. Your contentment must surely

3016. come from knowing Christ, from Christ filling your life with his strength. From being able to say with

3017. the apostle in 2 Corinthians 12, my grace is sufficient for you, God said to him, for my strength is made

3018. perfect in weakness. Much more then, said Paul, will I glory in my infirmities that the power of Christ,

3019. the strength of Christ may rest upon me. For when I am weak, then I am strong. You hand your life over

3020. to Jesus. And when you hand your life over to Jesus in faith and in trust, what happens? It means that

3021. you're not relying on your own strength. It means that you're not seeking contentment from the things

3022. you're able to produce yourself. It means that your contentment doesn't come from your own ability

3023. to create contentment. It doesn't come from the things of the world. It doesn't come from anything

3024. other than from Jesus himself. I can do all things through him who fills me with strength.

3025. The thankfulness is important. The dependence is important. But the source of all things,

3026. the key to the contentment is really Jesus himself. When you find a ship in rough seas,

3027. obviously plowing its way through a rough sea, that ship needs a captain. That ship needs a knowledgeable

3028. crew, officers that will actually take their own place in what needs to be done. They all have an

3029. important work. But whatever you say about the captain, and it may be the most skilled captain in the world,

3030. and it may be the best crew a ship could ever have. And they have their own work to do, but they are not

3031. the cause, the actual cause, the physical cause of the ship's progress through the rough seas.

3032. The cause is in those engines down below. These are the engines that drive the ship.

3033. The engines need the engineer. The ship needs the captain. But it's the working of the engines that

3034. empowers the vessel and drives it through the waves. And it is too with a Christian life.

3035. We need prayer. We need thankfulness. We need dependence. We need fellowship.

3036. We need all of these things and more. But our progress and our contentment is the energy of Jesus

3037. himself. That is the key to a contented life. And if we have that in place, then we can follow the

3038. words of the psalmist in Psalm 4. You remember these wonderful words, though we're not going to sing

3039. them tonight, but these words where David is saying in his dealings with God,

3040. Lord, there are some who say, who will show us some good? There's the question that's in everybody's

3041. minds. Who's going to show us any? Where does my contentment come from? Where can I find that which

3042. is truly good? You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound?

3043. The joys of the harvest, the contentment of seeing the harvest safely home. But he said,

3044. you have given me more joy than even they have at the height of their harvest joy. So he says,

3045. in peace, I will both lie down and sleep. For you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.

3046. That's your contented life. The life that lies willingly in the hands of God. Let's pray.

3047. Almighty God, we give thanks for your strength. O, we confess, Lord, our own weakness, our inability.

3048. We confess our unworthiness. Confess that we are not deserving that you should show us

3049. any comfort or mercy day by day. But we thank you that there is forgiveness with you.

3050. We thank you for all that flows into the lives of those who live by faith, of those who trust in you

3051. and have given their life over to you. We thank you for the enabling grace. We thank you for the daily

3052. grace that enables us, Lord, to look for contentment in yourself alone. We ask that our lives may be

3053. lives that are truly content. We ask that our witness to the world may be a witness that we are

3054. content with our God, that we are content to be his people and to live by faith and dependence and

3055. in thankfulness to him. And so receive us now, we pray. Receive our worship. Cleanse all that is of sin.

  3056. For Jesus' sake. Amen.

3057. We're going to sing now in conclusion this evening in Psalm 28. Psalm 28 in the Sing Psalms version on page 33.

  3058. Psalm 28 verses 6 to 9.

3073. be with you now and evermore. Amen.
