  1. Now then, we're going to begin our worship this evening singing in Psalm 108.

  2. Psalm 108, and that's from the Sing Psalms version, page 146.

  3. We sing to a tune, High for Doll, verses 1 to 7.

  4. O Lord God, my heart is steadfast, and with all my soul I'll sing.

  5. Harp and lyre I will awaken, and my song the dawn will bring.

  6. Lord my God, among the nations I will ever give you praise.

  7. In the midst of all the peoples I will sing of you always.

  8. Psalm 108, verses 1 to 7, the double verse 7, to God's praise.

    Psalms 108:1–7

  9. O Lord God, my heart is steadfast, and with all my soul I'll sing.

  10. Harp and lyre I will awaken, and my song the dawn will bring.

  11. Lord my God, among the nations I will ever give you praise.

  12. In the midst of all the peoples I will sing of you always.

  13. For your steadfast love is boundless, greater than the heavens high.

  14. And your faithfulness towards us reaches even to the sky.

  15. Far above the highest heavens, be exalted, O my God.

  16. And your glory spread abroad.

  17. With your right and safe and helpless, rescue all those whom you love.

  18. God has spoken from this temple, from this holy place above.

  19. I will distribute in triumph every part of Sheffersland.

  20. And the whole of Sarkovalli, I will measure with my hand.

  21. Let's call upon the Lord again in prayer.

  22. Let's pray together.

  23. Our gracious and eternal God, as we bow our heads before you in prayer,

  24. we give thanks again for these words that you have given us to sing,

  25. where the psalmist, in expressing his desire that the glory of the Lord would spread abroad throughout the earth,

  26. received that answer from God that you would indeed come to spread forth your blessing

  27. so as to cover these lands that are named in this psalm.

  28. We thank you, Lord, that your glory has been made manifest

  29. and has largely gone through all the earth,

  30. though we know that parts of the earth, even tonight,

  31. have not yet been reached with the gospel.

  32. O Lord, we thank you that in the spread of the gospel,

  33. your own kingdom has been advanced.

  34. And we thank you that your promise from the days of the Old Testament prophets

  35. through into the New Testament and the apostles,

  36. that your promise that you would build your church

  37. has indeed been, is indeed being fulfilled

  38. and has come to be seen in the way in which you bring people to know yourself.

  39. We thank you tonight that we form part of those who have been reached with the gospel,

  40. those who have come to know that the Lord has provided salvation for us

  41. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  42. Lord, we thank you tonight for him.

  43. It is indeed our great desire that we would know his blessing,

  44. that we would find as he sits upon the throne of the universe

  45. and administers his kingdom.

  46. Lord, our God, we pray that tonight we will know

  47. through the Holy Spirit of your blessing upon us.

  48. We pray that we may rejoice in being incorporated into your kingdom

  49. and that we may rejoice as a congregation,

  50. that we have the gospel,

  51. that we have that announcement in its fullness in your word,

  52. that the Lord God reigns on high

  53. and that the Lord God has provided for sinners like we are

  54. such an abundant redemption.

  55. Lord, we thank you tonight that we can come to express these things before you in prayer.

  56. We thank you that you are the God who hears the crying of your people.

  57. We thank you that you call upon us to call upon you.

  58. We thank you, Lord, that you make clear in your word

  59. that it is your delight to meet with us

  60. as we worship you and as we call upon you in prayer

  61. and sing your praises.

  62. Help us, we pray, as we come to your word,

  63. both in the reading and expounding of it

  64. and in hearing its message.

  65. Help us to receive it once again into our hearts.

  66. Help us to receive it in a way that would change

  67. and bring about in our lives that spiritual and holy shape

  68. that would be in accordance with your word

  69. on each and every facet of our lives.

  70. O Lord God, we pray tonight that our concern will be

  71. to be furthered in holiness of life,

  72. in commitment and love to you and to your cause

  73. and in looking to each other and to your cause at large

  74. so that we may value and love hearing about your people elsewhere

  75. throughout the world as we have been in recent times.

  76. We pray tonight for your people in all parts of the world.

  77. Lord, we ask, Lord, that you'd bless again those who are persecuted,

  78. those who are facing so many difficulties

  79. that we know largely little about.

  80. We thank you for the information that reaches us

  81. and for the way that we can bring this before you in prayer.

  82. Once again, we pray for the troubled spots of the world,

  83. the nations that are in upheaval through war,

  84. through famine, through various things that cause people distress,

  85. through misgovernment and mismanagement.

  86. Lord, we ask that you would be merciful to the many millions of people in the world

  87. who have to go without so many of the things that we enjoy in abundance.

  88. Lord, we pray that you would bless them tonight

  89. and bless them especially with the gospel.

  90. Forgive us, Lord, for we find ourselves complaining

  91. in relation to how we find things in these recent times

  92. with an increase in the price of commodities,

  93. with other aspects of increased prices and in fuel.

  94. While, O Lord, we do look with concern at these things,

  95. yet we confess they are but so small compared

  96. to the distress faced by many people in the world

  97. who don't even have clean water to use day by day,

  98. who have to walk miles for the nearest resources,

  99. who don't have shops to attend,

  100. and who have so few, O Lord, of the food

  101. and the commodities that we enjoy.

  102. We ask that you would make us thankful,

  103. make us dependable,

  104. give us, we pray, not to be complainers,

  105. and help us not to be like your people Israel of old

  106. who as soon as they came to the place

  107. where there was little water

  108. grumbled against Moses

  109. and therefore grumbled against the Lord.

  110. Help us, Lord, to be careful

  111. that we never grumble against you,

  112. that we never consider you as one to be complained of,

  113. for you give us day by day far more than we deserve.

  114. And we do pray that you would continue

  115. to expand our thankfulness

  116. so that the praise and the glory will belong to you.

  117. Remember us, we pray,

  118. as a congregation of your people.

  119. Lord, we thank you for all that we experienced this morning,

  120. for the baptisms that took place,

  121. for the children that were baptized and their parents,

  122. and we pray for them.

  123. We pray that you would bless them

  124. and bless this event to them.

  125. Make it indeed to them, O Lord,

  126. a means of blessing.

  127. We pray for every young family

  128. belonging to us as a congregation with children

  129. and bringing them up in difficult times

  130. as we face, O Lord.

  131. Give them, we pray,

  132. to trust in yourself.

  133. Enable them to look to your word

  134. and give them confidence in your word

  135. as they would seek to bring up their children

  136. in ways that are acceptable to you

  137. and are bright and wholesome morally and spiritually.

  138. We pray for them, Lord, in their schools.

  139. We ask that you would grant your blessing

  140. to all who teach our children.

  141. And we pray in the many challenges that they face,

  142. Lord, that you would grant your blessing

  143. to give them the strength and the resolve

  144. and the commitment

  145. and indeed the delight where possible

  146. in instructing young lives

  147. in such necessary subjects as they are.

  148. O Lord God, we ask that your blessing

  149. will be upon our local authority

  150. as they too take charge of the material in our schools.

  151. We pray that you would give them wisdom and courage

  152. and help them to resist whatever attempts are made,

  153. O Lord, to introduce that which is unwholesome,

  154. that which is contrary

  155. to the way in which your word sets before us,

  156. that which is healthy and good,

  157. spiritually and morally.

  158. And we pray that you would grant that blessing too

  159. throughout all our schools,

  160. throughout our nation,

  161. so that we may see many coming to be educated

  162. in a way that will be pleasing to you.

  163. We ask your blessing too, Lord, tonight

  164. for all our older ones,

  165. for those who have come to a time of failing health.

  166. We remember them and ask that you would be near to them,

  167. be with them, Lord,

  168. as they face difficulties and challenges

  169. in regard to their mental capacity,

  170. regard to physical abilities

  171. and failures of various bodily faculties.

  172. Gracious Lord, remember all who belong to us

  173. and have reached that stage of life.

  174. Remember, too,

  175. those who mourn over the passing of loved ones.

  176. Again, we pray for them.

  177. We pray for those who have lost loved ones recently.

  178. We pray, too,

  179. for those who look back over years

  180. and still find it so traumatic

  181. and difficult to think of

  182. their loved ones no longer being here,

  183. whether they passed away

  184. in their young days as children

  185. or even infants

  186. or in their older years.

  187. Nevertheless, Lord, we know

  188. the pain involved in losing loved ones.

  189. And even though we may know

  190. that our loved ones have gone to a better place,

  191. yet the pain of bereavement

  192. and separation remains.

  193. We thank you that you understand,

  194. that you know what it is,

  195. O Lord,

  196. to hear a cry from the cross.

  197. My God,

  198. my God,

  199. why have you forsaken me?

  200. And we ask,

  201. O Lord,

  202. that all our concerns

  203. and all our weepings,

  204. all our sorrows

  205. and all our changes

  206. may be laid at the foot of your cross

  207. and that we may see it

  208. in relation

  209. to your triumphant resurrection

  210. from the dead

  211. through which you have gone

  212. to prepare a place

  213. for your people.

  214. And now we pray

  215. that you'd bless the children this evening,

  216. the young ones

  217. at their big YF.

  218. Bless, we pray,

  219. those who are in leadership

  220. there as well.

  221. We pray for Gordon MacLeod

  222. and his role

  223. within the presbytery.

  224. We ask your blessing

  225. for him

  226. and for the work

  227. that he carries out

  228. and we ask that

  229. he may know your blessing

  230. from week to week

  231. as he engages

  232. with the young folks.

  233. And we pray

  234. that you would

  235. graciously hear us

  236. as we now

  237. continue in your presence.

  238. All of these things

  239. we ask,

  240. seeking the pardon

  241. of our sin

  242. and cleansing

  243. in the name of Christ,

  244. our Lord,

  245. for his sake.

  246. Amen.

  247. Let's read from God's Word

  248. now from 1 Corinthians.

  249. 1 Corinthians chapter 16.

    1 Corinthians 16 chapter mention

  250. And we read from the beginning

  251. through to the end of the chapter.

  252. Isn't it very instructive

  253. how the apostle,

  254. having gone through

  255. that amazing discourse

  256. in chapter 15

  257. in such theological depth

  258. about the resurrection,

  259. that he could come

  260. at the beginning

  261. of this section,

  262. the final section

  263. of 1 Corinthians,

  264. to turn from that deep theology

  265. into something so practical

  266. as collection

  267. for the saints.

  268. But he has no embarrassment

  269. about that

  270. because he realizes

  271. that all theology

  272. flows into

  273. our practical concern

  274. for one another

  275. and for the cause of God.

  276. Now, concerning

  277. the collection

  278. for the saints,

  279. as I directed

  280. the churches of Galatia,

  281. so you also are to do.

  282. On the first day

  283. of every week,

  284. each of you

  285. is to put something aside

  286. and store it up

  287. as he may prosper

  288. so that there will be

  289. no collecting

  290. when I come.

  291. And when I arrive,

  292. I will send those

  293. whom you accredit

  294. by letter

  295. to carry your gift

  296. to Jerusalem.

  297. If it seems advisable

  298. that I should go also,

  299. they will accompany me.

  300. I will visit you

  301. after passing

  302. through Macedonia,

  303. for I intend

  304. to pass through Macedonia

  305. and perhaps

  306. I will stay with you

  307. or even spend the winter

  308. so that you may help me

  309. on my journey

  310. wherever I go.

  311. For I do not want you,

  312. I do not want to see you

  313. now just in passing.

  314. I hope to spend

  315. some time with you

  316. if the Lord permits.

  317. But I will stay

  318. in Ephesus

  319. until Pentecost

  320. for a wide door

  321. for effective work

  322. has opened to me

  323. and there are

  324. many adversaries.

  325. When Timothy comes,

  326. see that you put him

  327. at ease among you

  328. for he is doing

  329. the work of the Lord

  330. as I am.

  331. So let no one

  332. despise him.

  333. Help him on his way

  334. in peace

  335. that he may return

  336. to me

  337. for I am expecting

  338. him with the brothers.

  339. Now concerning

  340. our brother Apollos,

  341. I strongly urged him

  342. to visit you

  343. with the other brothers

  344. but it was not

  345. at all his will

  346. to come now.

  347. He will come

  348. when he has opportunity.

  349. Be watchful,

  350. stand firm

  351. in the faith,

  352. act like men,

  353. be strong,

  354. let all that you do

  355. be done in love.

  356. Now I urge you,

  357. brothers,

  358. you know that the

  359. household of Stephanas

  360. were the first converts

  361. in Nehaya

  362. and that they have

  363. devoted themselves

  364. to the service

  365. of the saints.

  366. Be subject to such

  367. as these

  368. and to every fellow

  369. worker and laborer.

  370. I rejoice

  371. at the coming

  372. of Stephanas

  373. and Fortunatus

  374. and Nehaya

  375. because they have

  376. made up for your absence

  377. for they refreshed

  378. my spirit

  379. as well as yours.

  380. Give recognition

  381. to such men.

  382. The churches of Asia

  383. send you greetings.

  384. Aquila and Prissa

  385. together with the church

  386. in their house

  387. send you hearty

  388. greetings in the Lord.

  389. All the brothers

  390. send you greetings.

  391. Greet one another

  392. with a holy kiss.

  393. I, Paul,

  394. write this greeting

  395. with my own hand.

  396. If anyone has no love

  397. for the Lord,

  398. let him be accursed.

  399. Our Lord,

  400. come,

  401. the grace of the Lord

  402. Jesus Christ,

  403. the grace of the Lord

  404. Jesus be with you.

  405. My love be with you all

  406. in Christ Jesus.

  407. Amen.

  408. And we pray once again

  409. for God to follow

  410. that reading

  411. with his blessing.

  412. Our next psalm of praise

  413. is Psalm 122.

  414. Psalm 122

  415. in the Scottish Psalter.

  416. That's page 416.

  417. We'll sing the whole psalm.

  418. The tune is St. Paul.

  419. I joyed when

  420. to the house of God

  421. go up,

  422. they said to me.

  423. Jerusalem within

  424. thy gates

  425. our feet

  426. shall standing be.

  427. Jerusalem as a city

  428. is compactly

  429. built together

  430. and to that place

  431. the tribes go up.

  432. The tribes of God

  433. go thither.

  434. Psalm 122

  435. singing the whole psalm

  436. to God's praise.

  437. I joyed when

  438. to the house

  439. of God

  440. go up

  441. they said

  442. to me

  443. Jerusalem

  444. within

  445. thy gates

  446. our feet

  447. shall

  448. stand

  449. in

  450. be.

  451. Jerusalem

  452. lost

  453. our city

  454. is

  455. compactly

  456. built

  457. together

  458. unto

  459. the place

  460. the place

  461. that

  462. rights

  463. go up

  464. the

  465. rights

  466. of God

  467. go

  468. there

  469. to

  470. Israel's

  471. testimony

  472. there

  473. to

  474. cause

  475. him

  476. thanks to

  477. pay

  478. for

  479. God

  480. got

  481. to

  482. praise

  483. the

  484. unity

  490. Felicity

  491. Let them

  492. Thou love

  493. Beyond thy peace

  494. Have still

  495. Prosperity

  496. Therefore

  497. I wish

  498. That peace may still

  499. Within

  500. Thy walls

  501. Remain

  502. And never

  503. May thy

  504. Policies

  505. Prosperity

  506. Retain

  507. Now

  508. For my

  509. Friends and

  510. brethren's

  511. sake

  512. Peace

  513. Be in

  514. thee I'll

  515. stay

  516. And

  517. For the

  518. house

  519. Of

  520. God

  521. Our

  522. Lord

  523. I'll

  524. see

  525. thy

  526. good

  527. always

  528. God

  529. Great

  530. Now

  531. will you turn with me to Paul's letter to the Philippians.

  532. Paul's letter to the Philippians where we're going to finish off our series of studies in Philippians with the final few verses there of chapter 4.

  533. Philippians 4 at verse 21.

  534. Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brothers who are with me greet you. All the saints greet you, especially those of Caesar's household. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

  535. So we're coming to this final study as we've gone through the book of Philippians. We began it, I think, sometime back in June last year. And so it's taken us some time. But I did want, as I said at the beginning, to take time going through it so as to actually seek to bring out much of the main teaching in this wonderful letter of Paul.

  536. And I think I said at the beginning that one of the reasons we do, or one of the main reasons we do such studies as these consecutively, going through a book like this, is so that we can actually take it as a whole.

  537. Just imagine yourselves, if you were receiving this letter, if you were the congregation in Philippi, you wouldn't just pick out a passage here and there. You would begin at the beginning and read through the letter as a whole, and you would see how it was put together.

  538. And it's a wonderful thing to study these letters of the apostle, as well as other parts of scripture too, of course, and see how wonderfully and carefully the Holy Spirit has guided Paul in putting together these four chapters.

  539. And we've seen how much there is packed into certain passages or even verses of this epistle.

  540. And it's great to see how that network of teaching, that wonderful tapestry, if you like, of teaching, has been woven together in such a way as when we bring out the various parts of it, you begin to see the whole pattern more clearly.

  541. And I hope that's something that you've seen as we've gone through the epistle.

  542. Well, these final verses of the letter speak about two things mainly.

  543. First of all, it speaks about the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  544. He says,

  545. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

  546. And we'll take that first of all, and then come back to the other two verses, which speak mainly about the saints in Christ Jesus,

  547. the people of God that are called saints because of the way God has set them apart to be his own people in the world.

  548. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  549. Now, you recall at the very beginning of the letter that he begins with a reference to the grace of God, chapter 1, verse 2.

  550. To all the saints in Christ Jesus, grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  551. So he begins with a reference to grace and he ends with a reference to grace.

  552. And within these two bookends, if you like, of grace, he has packed all the teaching that we've seen as we've gone through the letter.

  553. The grace of God is, of course, the undeserved favor of God that he bestows on us sinners.

  554. It's not just favor, it's the undeserved favor of God.

  555. If you look at it in other terms, it's really effectively the love of God at work towards his people.

  556. That grace of God, that undeserved favor, that love of God with which they are loved as it is worked through in their lives from day to day and year to year.

  557. And you'll notice he's saying the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  558. Be with your spirit.

  559. Now, he's still talking in plural terms, but obviously every individual is incorporated, included in the reference.

  560. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with your spirit, plural.

  561. You as a congregation.

  562. And that reminds us that this undeserved favor of God, this wonderful favor, this love of God for his people, is a love that reaches through into the deepest part of our lives.

  563. It's designed to do that.

  564. It's something that actually comes to reach into the deepest recesses of our souls because we need the grace of God at work there.

  565. Because the grace of God brings the power of God.

  566. The grace of God at work, the power of the love of Christ as that flows into the lives of his people.

  567. It's a life-changing love.

  568. It's a life-changing grace.

  569. It's a life-changing power.

  570. And so, as he says here, the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

  571. It's a reminder to ourselves that this is really where we need the grace of God at work.

  572. Not just to tidy up a few pieces in our lives, a few parts of our outward conduct as it might be, though that itself would not be a bad thing.

  573. But the grace of God in its effectiveness, in its work, is not just doing a tidying-up job, a sweeping-up job, so that certain aspects of your outward conduct are tidied up or cleaned up.

  574. It's actually something that reaches into such deep parts of your soul as involve your will, your emotions, your conscience.

  575. All of that is affected by the working of God's grace as he applies it.

  576. There may be many things we know that stir our souls.

  577. I'm sure most of you like some types of music or other.

  578. And people will say that their favorite type of music, if they have time to listen to it, really find it stirring.

  579. They find it stirs their soul.

  580. And that's perfectly, perfectly acceptable, of course.

  581. When music or something that you love in that way stirs your soul properly, stirs your emotions, really works in you to move you to affection, to move you to appreciate what you're actually listening to.

  582. It's a wonderful thing.

  583. But the grace of God is the only thing that can renew your soul.

  584. You can enjoy the most magnificent music.

  585. You can enjoy the most magnificent writing.

  586. You can enjoy all of those things that we have from God and his goodness.

  587. But the grace of God reaches deeply into your spirit.

  588. And the grace of God, the working through of the love of God in the hearts of his people, is what really brings the change.

  589. And what I thought I would do with this point is just to try and summarize the teaching of the letter by thinking of it as the grace of God.

  590. Because that's really, I think, one of the reasons that Paul has put these two bookends of grace where they are at the beginning and at the end.

  591. So that everything in between them, really, you might say, has some relation or other to this grace of God.

  592. To this undeserved favor of God.

  593. To the love of God working in and towards his people.

  594. You remember back in chapter 1.

  595. It's the grace of God that binds us into a fellowship of people.

  596. So that it brings about a partnership in the gospel.

  597. And he's thanking God for that.

  598. In chapter 1 there from verse 3.

  599. I thank my God for that fellowship.

  600. For that partnership.

  601. And as he goes on to speak of that.

  602. He speaks of them being all partakers with me of grace.

  603. That's what's made them a people.

  604. That's what's made them the congregation, the church they are.

  605. They've been bound together.

  606. They're united together.

  607. They are a people by the grace of God.

  608. Then you go to the verse 12 of chapter 1.

  609. I want you to know, brothers, what has happened to me has really helped to advance the gospel.

  610. Here is a man who's in prison, as we recall.

  611. Here's a man who's writing from prison to these beloved Philippians.

  612. Here's a man who has all these troubles to contend with.

  613. Not just in regard to where he himself is.

  614. But the burdens he carries for all the churches.

  615. And yet he's convinced that the grace of God, the power of God's grace,

  616. makes these troubles work for the good of the gospel.

  617. I want you to understand, he's saying,

  618. that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.

  619. So it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard.

  620. We'll come back to that in a moment.

  621. It makes the troubles that we have work for the gospel and for our own good,

  622. as well as we depend on God.

  623. It enables us also to look beyond the present life.

  624. Verse 19, and the present circumstances.

  625. For I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

  626. this will turn out for my deliverance.

  627. And of course, it's the grace of God that has provided this wonderful Savior

  628. that he deals with so wonderfully in chapter 2,

  629. where he talks about the Son of God coming,

  630. showing this mind towards lost sinners,

  631. that he gave himself to all that he suffered,

  632. gave himself to the deprivations that he subjected himself to so willingly,

  633. and ultimately to the death of the cross itself.

  634. It's that grace of God that has provided us with that Savior tonight,

  635. who is Jesus.

  636. Why has Jesus Christ existed?

  637. Why did he live in this world?

  638. Why did the Son of God come?

  639. Because the grace of God was at work in providing that Savior for us.

  640. Grace of God, the love of God for his people, for his children,

  641. sent his own Son into this world.

  642. And then, the grace of God empowers our persevering witness.

  643. Chapter 2, verse 12, following.

  644. It's the persevering witness of God's people against the odds, you might say,

  645. against the troubles and the afflictions and the persecutions

  646. and the challenges and the resistance that they face.

  647. And indeed, that itself is proof of Christ risen from the dead.

  648. And just imagine, just now, these disciples,

  649. that you find, the account you find in the book of Acts

  650. about the disciples,

  651. and they're going out into the world with the gospel.

  652. In chapter 5, just to take one example,

  653. verses 40 to 42,

  654. you find the governing authorities

  655. summoning the disciples again

  656. and saying to them,

  657. don't preach in this name again,

  658. and wanting to send them away,

  659. and charging them not to speak in the name of Jesus,

  660. and then let them go.

  661. But they actually let them go,

  662. but they left the presence of the council,

  663. rejoicing that they were counted worthy

  664. to suffer dishonor for the name,

  665. for the name of Christ.

  666. And every day in the temple, from house to house,

  667. they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.

  668. Now, can you possibly imagine

  669. these people, these disciples,

  670. if they were convinced that Jesus was still dead,

  671. as we're actually facing that idea in the world

  672. that Christ couldn't possibly have risen from the dead,

  673. nobody rises from the dead,

  674. certainly not by their own power.

  675. Can you imagine these disciples

  676. going out to the world

  677. with this message of Jesus risen from the dead,

  678. if they were not themselves convinced

  679. that he had risen from the dead?

  680. Where did they get the encouragement from?

  681. Where did they get this conviction from?

  682. Where did they get this desire?

  683. Where did they get this burden

  684. to bring this message of the gospel

  685. to the world of their day?

  686. From the fact that they knew Jesus was risen.

  687. That's what the grace of God had brought about.

  688. They would not have put up

  689. with all the sufferings and persecutions

  690. that they endured,

  691. as described in the book of Acts,

  692. if they had any doubts

  693. that Jesus was alive or dead.

  694. They wouldn't have put up with it.

  695. And it's in chapter 3.

  696. I'm just scanning through this quickly.

  697. It's just a reminder to us

  698. that this is what we've covered.

  699. This is the substance, really,

  700. of the teaching of the book

  701. as we skim over these.

  702. Chapter 3,

  703. the grace of God

  704. is what changes a persecutor

  705. into a disciple.

  706. There is the apostle himself

  707. giving his testimony.

  708. There he is talking about

  709. how he used to have confidence

  710. in the flesh,

  711. his own ability,

  712. his own ability to please God

  713. by his own efforts,

  714. by the strenuous efforts

  715. of trying to keep God's law.

  716. But he said,

  717. whatever gain I had,

  718. I counted as loss

  719. for the sake of Christ.

  720. Indeed,

  721. I count everything as loss

  722. because of the surpassing worth

  723. of knowing Christ Jesus,

  724. my Lord.

  725. For his sake,

  726. I have suffered the loss

  727. of all things

  728. and count them as rubbish

  729. in order that I may gain Christ.

  730. And so on.

  731. And he goes on,

  732. of course,

  733. from that to,

  734. into that great teaching

  735. of how we come to be justified.

  736. Where does our righteousness

  737. come from

  738. that we need

  739. in the presence of God?

  740. It's in Jesus himself.

  741. And by faith in Jesus,

  742. his righteousness

  743. becomes ours.

  744. Now,

  745. you and I need

  746. that righteousness.

  747. righteousness.

  748. We're not born with it.

  749. It's not something

  750. that we produce ourselves.

  751. If you think of it

  752. as the Bible often does,

  753. as a garment

  754. that is worn spiritually,

  755. spiritual garment,

  756. well,

  757. that garment

  758. is not woven

  759. by any human craftsman.

  760. That garment

  761. has been produced

  762. by God

  763. through Jesus Christ

  764. and his work

  765. on the cross.

  766. and the righteousness

  767. that now exists

  768. in Christ for us,

  769. that's what the gospel

  770. offers to us.

  771. And you could go on

  772. and see how in chapter 3,

  773. the grace of God

  774. sanctifies God's people

  775. for glory.

  776. Chapter 3,

  777. verses 12,

  778. following on from that.

  779. That's the grace of God

  780. in chapter 4

  781. that mends

  782. broken relationships,

  783. that we need

  784. to mend

  785. broken relationships.

  786. I entreat you,

  787. I entreat Syntyche

  788. to agree

  789. in the Lord.

  790. And so on.

  791. He talks there

  792. about how

  793. they need

  794. to deal with

  795. whatever has

  796. separated them

  797. and caused

  798. the difference

  799. of opinion

  800. or the falling out

  801. between them.

  802. It's the grace of God

  803. that's required

  804. in order to mend

  805. broken relationships.

  806. It's the grace of God

  807. that produces

  808. contentment of mind.

  809. Chapter 4,

  810. verse 12,

  811. I have learned

  812. in whatsoever state

  813. I am therein

  814. to be content.

  815. Why is he content?

  816. Because he has

  817. Jesus in his fullness

  818. and he doesn't need

  819. to look for

  820. contentment

  821. anywhere else.

  822. He has all he needs

  823. of contentment

  824. in Christ.

  825. It's the grace of God

  826. that moves people

  827. to kindness

  828. and supplies

  829. all our wants

  830. as we saw

  831. in our most recent study.

  832. Now all of these things

  833. are features

  834. which we need

  835. as a congregation.

  836. All of these things

  837. whether we think

  838. of Jesus himself

  839. of being a fellowship

  840. and a partnership

  841. of actually having

  842. the strength

  843. to face our troubles

  844. in life

  845. of actually looking

  846. beyond the present life

  847. positively

  848. and in hope

  849. of sanctifying us

  850. for glory

  851. of mending

  852. broken relationships

  853. when that occurs

  854. of producing

  855. contentment

  856. of mind

  857. of moving us

  858. to acts

  859. of kindness

  860. to one another

  861. and to the world

  862. around us

  863. of supplying

  864. all our wants

  865. all our needs

  866. that is the grace

  867. of God

  868. as it works

  869. as it comes

  870. into our experience

  871. and into our lives.

  872. So there is what Paul

  873. begins with

  874. or rather ends

  875. with

  876. although we've said it

  877. as the first point

  878. of our study tonight

  879. the grace

  880. of the Lord

  881. Jesus Christ

  882. be with your spirit.

  883. What is it

  884. that moves you

  885. most

  886. in your own life?

  887. What is it

  888. that gives you

  889. the greatest satisfaction?

  890. What is it

  891. that gives you

  892. the greatest stirring

  893. of soul?

  894. Is it not

  895. the grace of God

  896. at work?

  897. Is it not

  898. the love of Christ

  899. as you experience it?

  900. Is it not

  901. Jesus being

  902. your Savior too?

  903. Is that not

  904. the most precious

  905. thing you have?

  906. The most precious

  907. person that you own

  908. and are related

  909. to?

  910. This Lord

  911. this Savior

  912. this mighty

  913. Redeemer

  914. the grace

  915. of the Lord

  916. Jesus Christ

  917. be with

  918. your spirit.

  919. But then he speaks

  920. also about the saints.

  921. And there are three

  922. things here briefly

  923. that we can take note

  924. of as he says

  925. first of all

  926. greet every saint

  927. in Christ Jesus.

  928. All the saints

  929. greet you

  930. especially those

  931. of Caesar's

  932. household.

  933. Now you notice

  934. he's saying

  935. all the saints

  936. greet you.

  937. And the first thing

  938. that comes across

  939. to you from that

  940. is the unity

  941. of God's church.

  942. The unity of all

  943. who are believers

  944. in Christ.

  945. This is what he's saying.

  946. All the saints

  947. greet you.

  948. All the saints

  949. are not in Philippi.

  950. All the saints

  951. are not in Rome.

  952. All the saints

  953. are scattered

  954. throughout the empire

  955. as Paul writes

  956. these words

  957. to the Philippians.

  958. But he says

  959. all the saints

  960. greet you.

  961. Maybe he meant

  962. all those

  963. particularly

  964. as he says

  965. of Caesar's household.

  966. He does go on

  967. to mention that

  968. and we'll see that

  969. in a minute.

  970. But he does say

  971. all the saints

  972. greet you.

  973. And there is no

  974. indication that he

  975. wants to confine it

  976. to those that he

  977. knows himself

  978. personally

  979. or in Rome

  980. where he's imprisoned.

  981. All the saints

  982. greet you.

  983. God

  984. has only one church.

  985. Whatever denominations

  986. we know of

  987. or may belong to

  988. all who are saints

  989. all who are

  990. set apart

  991. by God

  992. in Christ Jesus

  993. belong to each other

  994. as they belong to him.

  995. So wherever

  996. God's people

  997. are placed

  998. they are

  999. spiritually

  1000. connected

  1001. in a

  1002. brotherly

  1003. sisterly way

  1004. with all the saints

  1005. elsewhere

  1006. in the world.

  1007. And we have

  1008. an interest

  1009. because there is

  1010. just the one church

  1011. that crosses

  1012. all of the divides

  1013. that we know

  1014. between congregations

  1015. between denominations

  1016. between

  1017. various traditions

  1018. in the gospel

  1019. throughout the world

  1020. we have

  1021. an interest

  1022. and involvement

  1023. in the well-being

  1024. of God's church.

1025. Why should it bother us

  1026. tonight

  1027. that Christians

  1028. are actually suffering

  1029. in different parts

  1030. of the world

  1031. because they are

  1032. brothers and sisters

  1033. in Christ

  1034. because they belong

  1035. to a family?

1036. Why should it bother us

  1037. if certain

  1038. congregations

  1039. or certain groups

  1040. that follow

  1041. the Christian faith

  1042. actually go aside

  1043. into heresy

  1044. and are no longer

  1045. following the gospel

  1046. faithfully

  1047. maybe come sometimes

  1048. up with some

  1049. outrageous

  1050. conclusions

  1051. and practices?

1052. Why should it bother us

  1053. if some

  1054. Christian churches

  1055. mainstream Christian churches

  1056. are embracing

  1057. a worldly view

  1058. of life

  1059. and of marriage

  1060. and of relationships?

1061. Why should that bother us?

  1062. Because

  1063. because the saints

  1064. of Jesus Christ

  1065. make up one church

  1066. and wherever you find

  1067. decline

  1068. whatever

  1069. denomination

  1070. it may be

  1071. or whatever

  1072. congregation

  1073. it may be

1074. just as you can say

  1075. within

  1076. one congregation

  1077. whatever individual

  1078. it may be

  1079. it concerns

  1080. it concerns

  1081. us

  1082. as those

  1083. who in this world

  1084. are set apart

  1085. to be God's people

  1086. because

  1087. the saints

  1088. all the saints

  1089. have an interest

  1090. together

  1091. in the well-being

  1092. of Christ's church

  1093. it is

  1094. our concern

  1095. it is

  1096. our concern

  1097. tonight

  1098. for

  1099. our brothers

  1100. and sisters

  1101. in Ukraine

  1102. wherever else

  1103. they may be

  1104. in the world

  1105. their welfare

  1106. is important

  1107. to us

  1108. not because

  1109. they're just

  1110. human beings

  1111. like ourselves

  1112. but because

  1113. as Christians

  1114. in Ukraine

  1115. they are the

  1116. Lord's people

  1117. they differ from us

  1118. as other Christians

  1119. in other places do

  1120. they don't worship

  1121. exactly the same

  1122. as we do

  1123. they may have

  1124. traditions

  1125. that we don't

  1126. ourselves

  1127. agree with

  1128. but where they

  1129. present themselves

  1130. as living

  1131. by faith

  1132. in Christ

  1133. and seeking

  1134. to be obedient

  1135. to God

  1136. then the Arab

  1137. brothers

  1138. and sisters

  1139. at that level

  1140. at least

  1141. in the Lord

  1142. all the saints

  1143. greet you

  1144. but especially

  1145. those of

  1146. Caesar's household

  1147. this is interesting

  1148. and it ties up

  1149. with what we saw

  1150. near the beginning

  1151. we reflected on

  1152. just briefly

  1153. tonight as well

  1154. in chapter 1

1155. I want you to know

  1156. brothers

  1157. that what has

  1158. happened to me

  1159. has really served

  1160. to advance the gospel

  1161. so that it has

  1162. become known

  1163. throughout the whole

  1164. imperial guard

1165. and to all the rest

  1166. that my

  1167. imprisonment

  1168. is for Christ

  1169. and it led

  1170. to some

  1171. actually

  1172. being emboldened

  1173. to preach the gospel

  1174. what do you see

  1175. what he's saying

  1176. there

  1177. and what he's saying

  1178. here

  1179. all the saints

  1180. greet you

  1181. especially those

  1182. of Caesar's household

  1183. what is he talking

  1184. about

  1185. what is Caesar's

  1186. household

  1187. Caesar's household

  1188. is the imperial

  1189. palace

  1190. who was the Caesar

  1191. at the time

  1192. that Paul wrote

  1193. to the Philippians

  1194. it was the cruel

  1195. emperor

  1196. Nero

  1197. and yet here

  1198. you find

  1199. in Nero's

  1200. palace

  1201. among Nero's

  1202. servants

  1203. among those

  1204. who served

  1205. as wicked

  1206. emperor

  1207. this un-Christian

  1208. un-godly

  1209. pagan man

  1210. here you find

  1211. Paul saying

  1212. all the saints

  1213. greet you

  1214. especially those

  1215. of Caesar's

  1216. household

  1217. there are saints

  1218. in the most

  1219. unexpected places

  1220. even Caesar's

  1221. household

  1222. even Nero's

  1223. household

  1224. even Nero's

  1225. servants

  1226. contain

  1227. saints

  1228. there are

  1229. Christians there

  1230. there are people

  1231. there who love

  1232. the Lord

  1233. and Paul is saying

  1234. they are sending

  1235. you their

  1236. greetings

  1237. tonight there are

  1238. Christians

  1239. in the most

  1240. unexpected places

  1241. places that are

  1242. closed officially

  1243. to the gospel

  1244. there are Christians

  1245. tonight as you

  1246. know yourselves

  1247. in China

  1248. there are Christians

  1249. tonight in North

  1250. Korea

  1251. these countries

  1252. can be sealed

  1253. off by their

  1254. dictators

  1255. as North Korea

  1256. is at the

  1257. moment

  1258. and yet

  1259. God has

  1260. his people

  1261. there

  1262. you see

  1263. we can

  1264. we can

  1265. legislate

  1266. even in our

  1267. own country

  1268. against grace

  1269. we can

  1270. legislate

  1271. in a way

  1272. that seeks

  1273. to wipe

  1274. the statute

  1275. book

  1276. of all

  1277. that is

  1278. really

  1279. specifically

  1280. Christian

  1281. we can

  1282. imprison

  1283. Christians

  1284. we can

  1285. make it

  1286. really tough

  1287. for them

  1288. as it was

  1289. for the

  1290. apostle here

  1291. but you

  1292. cannot stop

  1293. the gospel

  1294. you cannot

  1295. stop the

  1296. Holy Spirit

  1297. there is no

  1298. power in the

  1299. world

  1300. or out of

  1301. the world

  1302. that can

  1303. actually stand

  1304. against the

  1305. Holy Spirit

  1306. and say

  1307. you can't

  1308. come in

  1309. here

  1310. this is a

  1311. no-go

  1312. area for

  1313. the gospel

  1314. we don't

  1315. want your

  1316. Christianity

  1317. here

  1318. here are

  1319. all of

  1320. these people

  1321. in Caesar's

  1322. household

  1323. and they're

  1324. worshippers of

  1325. God

  1326. they are

  1327. saints of

  1328. God

  1329. be thrilled

  1330. about that

  1331. tonight

  1332. remember us

  1333. you pray

  1334. tonight

  1335. for God's

  1336. people

  1337. throughout

  1338. the world

  1339. pray for

  1340. those

  1341. who are

  1342. Christians

  1343. in unexpected

  1344. places

  1345. pray for

  1346. those

  1347. who are

  1348. Christians

  1349. in

  1350. countries

  1351. that are

  1352. closed

  1353. officially

  1354. to the

  1355. gospel

  1356. and that's

  1357. what you

  1358. find

  1359. even the

  1360. likes of

  1361. Ukraine

  1362. as well

  1363. with all

  1364. the brutality

  1365. that the

  1366. Ukrainian

  1367. people are

  1368. experiencing

  1369. and have

  1370. experienced

  1371. now for

  1372. months

  1373. not even

  1374. all that

  1375. brutality

  1376. can extinguish

  1377. the gospel

  1378. or can extinguish

  1379. faithful witness

  1380. to Christ

  1381. how many people

  1382. have you heard

  1383. in the news

  1384. reports

  1385. quite a number

  1386. thankfully

  1387. that were

  1388. interviewed

  1389. certainly in the

  1390. early parts

  1391. of the

  1392. struggles

  1393. and asking

  1394. for their

  1395. views

  1396. making reference

  1397. to their

  1398. faith in

  1399. God

  1400. making reference

  1401. to placing

  1402. their lives

  1403. in his

  1404. hand even

  1405. as they

  1406. fled the

  1407. country

  1408. or look

  1409. to the

  1410. shell

  1411. of their

  1412. accommodation

  1413. a wreckage

  1414. of their

  1415. city

  1416. did that

  1417. destroy their

  1418. faith

  1419. did that

  1420. mean that

  1421. Christianity

  1422. had been

  1423. wiped out

  1424. of course

  1425. not because

  1426. you cannot

  1427. stop the

  1428. power of

  1429. God

  1430. the grace

  1431. of God

  1432. you cannot

  1433. stop the

  1434. love of

  1435. God reaching

  1436. sinners

  1437. wherever he

  1438. chooses

  1439. you know

  1440. there are

  1441. people in

  1442. our own

  1443. locality

  1444. tonight

  1445. who are

  1446. undoubtedly

  1447. enemies of

  1448. the gospel

  1449. who make

  1450. it quite

  1451. clear that

  1452. they are

  1453. out against

  1454. the gospel

  1455. to do

  1456. everything

  1457. possible

  1458. not only to

  1459. make it

  1460. ineffective

  1461. but to

  1462. get rid

  1463. of it

  1464. altogether

  1465. if

  1466. possible

  1467. they stand

  1468. as enemies

  1469. of the

  1470. church

  1471. as enemies

  1472. of the

  1473. preaching

  1474. of the

  1475. gospel

  1476. as enemies

  1477. of the

  1478. standard

  1479. of the

  1480. gospel

  1481. the moral

  1482. and spiritual

  1483. standard

  1484. that the

  1485. gospel

  1486. sets out

  1487. and they

  1488. make it

  1489. clear

  1490. many of

  1491. them

  1492. by the

  1493. way they

  1494. speak

  1495. that that

  1496. is what

  1497. their life

  1498. is driven

  1499. by

  1500. that is

  1501. what they

  1502. are setting

  1503. out to

  1504. achieve

  1505. let me

  1506. tell you

  1507. this

  1508. they may

  1509. put us

  1510. in prison

  1511. we may

  1512. end up

  1513. having to

  1514. suffer

  1515. deeply

  1516. for the

  1517. faith

  1518. for all

  1519. we know

  1520. they may

  1521. remove

  1522. everything

  1523. from us

  1524. in terms

  1525. of our

  1526. possessions

  1527. but they

  1528. cannot take

  1529. Christ from

  1530. us

  1531. they cannot

  1532. take the

  1533. gospel itself

  1534. from us

  1535. and remember

  1536. when you're

  1537. praying

  1538. tonight again

  1539. not just

  1540. praying for

  1541. those in

  1542. these

  1543. countries

  1544. where you

  1545. might not

  1546. expect to

  1547. find

  1548. Christians

  1549. but where

  1550. they're

  1551. there

  1552. remember

  1553. too for

  1554. those who

  1555. are

  1556. about

  1557. enemies

  1558. of the

  1559. gospel

  1560. pray for

  1561. them

  1562. pray for

  1563. this mighty

  1564. grace of

  1565. God to

  1566. take hold

  1567. of their

  1568. lives

  1569. as that

  1570. grace of

  1571. God took

  1572. hold of

  1573. the life

  1574. of this

  1575. author of

  1576. Philippians

  1577. who as he

  1578. says in

  1579. chapter 7

  1580. this power

  1581. this Jesus

  1582. grasped me

  1583. he took

  1584. hold of

  1585. me

  1586. he arrested

  1587. me

  1588. and he

  1589. took me

  1590. into the

  1591. custody of

  1592. his grace

  1593. the power

  1594. and the

  1595. care of

  1596. his grace

  1597. pray for

  1598. those tonight

  1599. that God

  1600. would convert

  1601. them

  1602. that the

  1603. power of

  1604. his grace

  1605. would enter

  1606. their lives

  1607. that they

  1608. may have

  1609. a change

  1610. around in

  1611. their thinking

  1612. completely

  1613. not just so

  1614. that we

  1615. might have

  1616. more peace

  1617. for the

  1618. gospel

  1619. that's

  1620. important

  1621. but that

  1622. they will

  1623. realize

  1624. themselves

  1625. how much

  1626. they need

  1627. this Christ

  1628. how valuable

  1629. the Savior

  1630. is

  1631. how

  1632. indispensable

  1633. it is

  1634. to have

  1635. Jesus as

  1636. your Savior

  1637. especially

  1638. they

  1639. who are of

  1640. Caesar's

  1641. household

  1642. there are

  1643. saints

  1644. even there

  1645. and there are

  1646. saints tonight

  1647. in the most

  1648. unexpected

  1649. places

  1650. and finally

  1651. he says

  1652. greet

  1653. every saint

  1654. greet

  1655. every saint

  1656. in Christ

  1657. Jesus

  1658. he's been

  1659. thinking

  1660. up to now

  1661. and writing

  1662. in corporate

  1663. terms

  1664. plurals

  1665. but now

  1666. he's

  1667. individualizing

  1668. greet

  1669. every saint

  1670. in Christ

  1671. Jesus

  1672. we tend

  1673. to categorize

  1674. people

  1675. don't we

  1676. we tend to

  1677. categorize

  1678. Christians

  1679. as well

  1680. we tend

  1681. to categorize

  1682. Christians

  1683. who are

  1684. like

  1685. ourselves

  1686. have the

  1687. same

  1688. way of

  1689. looking at

  1690. things

  1691. the same

  1692. kind of

  1693. worship

  1694. and we

  1695. categorize

  1696. them

  1697. and we

  1698. make them

  1699. really

  1700. so much

  1701. more

  1702. important

  1703. to us

  1704. in a sense

  1705. than others

  1706. are

  1707. we think

  1708. of them

  1709. as

  1710. brothers and

  1711. sisters

  1712. but don't

  1713. really want

  1714. to go

  1715. outside of

  1716. that too

  1717. much

  1718. greet

  1719. every

  1720. saint

  1721. in Christ

  1722. Jesus

  1723. wherever you

  1724. come across

  1725. a Christian

  1726. someone who

  1727. is truly

  1728. the Lord's

  1729. someone who

  1730. truly loves

  1731. the Lord

  1732. someone who

  1733. obviously is

  1734. a saint

  1735. set apart

  1736. by the grace

  1737. of God

  1738. greet them

  1739. and greet

  1740. them means

  1741. deal with

  1742. them as

  1743. brothers and

  1744. sisters should

  1745. greet

  1746. every saint

  1747. in Christ

  1748. Jesus

  1749. because the

  1750. Bible tells

  1751. us that

  1752. we are all

  1753. one in

  1754. Christ Jesus

  1755. in Paul's

  1756. letter to

  1757. the Galatians

  1758. now he meant

  1759. that specifically

  1760. in terms of

  1761. how we come

  1762. to be justified

  1763. by faith

  1764. in Christ

  1765. Jesus

  1766. and we are

  1767. made all

  1768. one in

  1769. that sense

  1770. you mustn't

  1771. take from

  1772. that some

  1773. ideas that

  1774. you find

  1775. current that

  1776. there's no

  1777. distinction at

  1778. all between

  1779. men and

  1780. women in

  1781. church or

  1782. in church

  1783. office or

  1784. that sort

  1785. of thing

  1786. that's not

  1787. what Paul

  1788. meant

  1789. he meant

  1790. on the

  1791. level of

  1792. being justified

  1793. of being

  1794. accepted

  1795. with God

  1796. of being

  1797. righteous

  1798. of being

  1799. saints

  1800. there is

  1801. no difference

  1802. between male

  1803. and female

  1804. in that

  1805. regard

  1806. and we

  1807. mustn't

  1808. actually put

  1809. a difference

  1810. or something

  1811. where of a

  1812. distinction

  1813. where God

  1814. hasn't made

  1815. one

  1816. whatever race

  1817. or color

  1818. people may

  1819. be of

  1820. there is

  1821. no racism

  1822. allowed within

  1823. the relationships

  1824. of God's

  1825. people

  1826. greet

  1827. every saint

  1828. in Christ

  1829. Jesus

  1830. the Bible

  1831. teaches us

  1832. the New Testament

  1833. a biblical

  1834. equality

  1835. where we all

  1836. have an

  1837. equality in

  1838. Christ

  1839. where each

  1840. of us

  1841. is accepted

  1842. by God

  1843. as much

  1844. as the

  1845. other

  1846. and you

  1847. remember

  1848. Paul himself

  1849. when he

  1850. wrote

  1851. that little

  1852. letter

  1853. to

  1854. Philemon

  1855. you remember

  1856. that he

  1857. speaks in

  1858. Philemon

  1859. of how

  1860. Philemon

  1861. was to

  1862. receive

  1863. the slave

  1864. that had

  1865. run away

  1866. from him

  1867. and was

  1868. now coming

  1869. back to him

  1870. this slave

  1871. Onesimus

  1872. I Paul

  1873. am now an

  1874. old man

  1875. prisoner for

  1876. Christ Jesus

  1877. I appeal

  1878. to you

  1879. for my

  1880. child

  1881. Onesimus

  1882. whose father

  1883. I became

  1884. in my

  1885. imprisonment

  1886. of course

  1887. he's talking

  1888. spiritually

  1889. Onesimus

  1890. was converted

  1891. as he met

  1892. with Paul

  1893. as a prisoner

  1894. he was

  1895. converted

  1896. formerly he

  1897. was useless

  1898. to you

  1899. but now

  1900. he is

  1901. indeed useful

  1902. to you

  1903. and to me

  1904. I am

  1905. sending him

  1906. back to you

  1907. sending my

  1908. very heart

  1909. I would have

  1910. been glad

  1911. to keep him

  1912. with me

  1913. in order

  1914. that he

  1915. might serve

  1916. me on

  1917. your behalf

  1918. during my

  1919. imprisonment

  1920. for the

  1921. gospel

  1922. but I

  1923. prefer to do

  1924. nothing

  1925. without your

  1926. consent

  1927. I have

  1928. sent him

  1929. back

  1930. for you

  1931. so

  1932. no longer

  1933. treat him

  1934. as a

  1935. slave

  1936. but more

  1937. than a

  1938. slave

  1939. as a

  1940. beloved

  1941. brother

  1942. especially

  1943. to me

  1944. but how

  1945. much more

  1946. to you

  1947. receive him

  1948. as you

  1949. would receive

  1950. me

  1951. aren't

  1952. these

  1953. incredible

  1954. words

  1955. here's

  1956. here's

  1957. here's

  1958. here's

  1959. this

  1960. mighty

  1961. apostle

  1962. here's

  1963. this

  1964. great

  1965. man

  1966. of

  1967. God

  1968. and he's

  1969. writing

  1970. to Philemon

  1971. in regard

  1972. to this

  1973. slave

  1974. and here

  1975. he is

  1976. talking about

  1977. this slave

  1978. and saying

  1979. to Philemon

  1980. look I'm

  1981. sending him

  1982. back to you

  1983. but he's

  1984. a changed

  1985. man

  1986. he's been

  1987. converted

  1988. he's now

  1989. a man

  1990. of God

  1991. receive him

  1992. as you

  1993. would receive

  1994. me

  1995. because in

  1996. Jesus Christ

  1997. there's no

  1998. distinction

  1999. he's as

  2000. acceptable

  2001. to God

  2002. as the

  2003. apostle Paul

  2004. was

  2005. so that's

  2006. why he's

  2007. saying

  2008. greet

  2009. every

  2010. saint

  2011. in Christ

  2012. Jesus

  2013. well I

  2014. hope that

  2015. you have

  2016. heard the

  2017. voice of

  2018. God

  2019. speaking to

  2020. you through

  2021. these studies

  2022. and indeed

  2023. through all

  2024. the studies

  2025. of scripture

  2026. that we

  2027. engage in

  2028. and you

  2029. remember the

  2030. words of

  2031. Psalm 95

  2032. and verse

  2033. 8

  2034. which speaks

  2035. about the

  2036. voice of

  2037. God

  2038. and today

  2039. if you

  2040. hear his

  2041. voice

  2042. harden

  2043. not your

  2044. heart

  2045. this is to

  2046. me and

  2047. this is to

  2048. you as

  2049. well

  2050. if you

  2051. hear his

  2052. voice today

  2053. harden

  2054. not your

  2055. heart

  2056. you know

  2057. today

  2058. is all

  2059. you have

  2060. yes you

  2061. may see

  2062. tomorrow

  2063. but it's

  2064. not

  2065. guaranteed

  2066. so for

  2067. the moment

  2068. today is

  2069. all you

  2070. have

  2071. this today

  2072. where you're

  2073. hearing and

  2074. when you're

  2075. hearing the

  2076. voice of

  2077. God

  2078. today

  2079. if you

  2080. hear his

  2081. voice

  2082. don't harden

  2083. your heart

  2084. don't say

  2085. I listen to

  2086. it more

  2087. tomorrow

  2088. accept him

  2089. now

  2090. don't harden

  2091. your heart

  2092. against it

  2093. don't promise

  2094. yourself something

  2095. that may never

  2096. happen

  2097. and today

  2098. it's not just

  2099. all you have

  2100. but today

  2101. is all you

  2102. need

  2103. today is all

  2104. you need

  2105. to have

  2106. Christ for

  2107. yourself

  2108. to be

  2109. saved

  2110. to be

  2111. a saint

  2112. to come

  2113. to be

  2114. a follower

  2115. a disciple

  2116. of Jesus

  2117. today

  2118. is all

  2119. you need

  2120. even if

  2121. there isn't

  2122. a tomorrow

  2123. for you

  2124. or for me

  2125. remember

  2126. today

  2127. right now

  2128. is all

  2129. you need

  2130. to trust

  2131. in Jesus

  2132. don't say

  2133. if you

  2134. hear his

  2135. voice

  2136. as you're

  2137. hearing his

  2138. voice

  2139. in the

  2140. gospel

  2141. now

  2142. don't say

  2143. well

  2144. I'm not

  2145. ready yet

  2146. for this

  2147. I need

  2148. to do

  2149. a bit

  2150. more

  2151. studying

  2152. I need

  2153. to do

  2154. something

  2155. else

  2156. in order

  2157. to

  2158. actually

  2159. appreciate

  2160. more

  2161. of what

  2162. the gospel

  2163. is

  2164. I want

  2165. to

  2166. understand

  2167. more

  2168. of the

  2169. likes

  2170. of these

  2171. letters

  2172. of the

  2173. Bible

  2174. these books

  2175. of the

  2176. Bible

  2177. today

  2178. is all

  2179. you need

  2180. to trust

  2181. in Christ

  2182. to give

  2183. your life

  2184. over to

  2185. him

  2186. to follow

  2187. him

  2188. to be

  2189. among

  2190. the saints

  2191. of God

  2192. saints

  2193. in

  2194. unexpected

  2195. places

  2196. saints

  2197. you can

  2198. turn that

  2199. around

  2200. and say

  2201. that there

  2202. are people

  2203. who aren't

  2204. saints

  2205. in places

  2206. where you

  2207. would expect

  2208. them to

  2209. be so

  2210. and this

  2211. is one

  2212. of them

  2213. you would

  2214. not expect

  2215. that this

  2216. place which

  2217. knows the

  2218. gospel so

  2219. well

  2220. would have

  2221. people

  2222. who are not

  2223. yet saints

  2224. of God

  2225. who have

  2226. not come

  2227. to a

  2228. saving

  2229. relationship

  2230. with Jesus

  2231. oh don't

  2232. be like

  2233. that if

  2234. you're like

  2235. that tonight

  2236. I urge

  2237. you in

  2238. the name

  2239. of Christ

  2240. trust in

  2241. him

  2242. receive

  2243. him

  2244. accept

  2245. him

  2246. love

  2247. him

  2248. follow

  2249. him

  2250. believe

  2251. in him

  2252. speak

  2253. about

  2254. him

  2255. defend

  2256. him

  2257. do

  2258. everything

  2259. in your

  2260. power

  2261. to be

  2262. a

  2263. saint

  2264. of

  2265. God

  2266. let's

  2267. pray

  2268. Lord

  2269. our

  2270. gracious

  2271. God

  2272. we

  2273. thank

  2274. you

  2275. for

  2276. the

  2277. grace

  2278. that

  2279. makes

  2280. saints

  2281. out

  2282. of

  2283. sinners

  2284. and as

  2285. we

  2286. find

  2287. ourselves

  2288. Lord

  2289. still

  2290. in

  2291. the

  2292. confession

  2293. of

  2294. our

  2295. sins

  2296. even

  2297. as

  2298. saints

  2299. of

  2300. God

  2301. we

  2302. pray

  2303. for

  2304. your

  2305. grace

  2306. for

  2307. the

  2308. grace

  2309. of

  2310. forgiveness

  2311. for

  2312. the

  2313. grace

  2314. of

  2315. restoration

  2316. we

  2317. pray

  2318. for

  2319. your

  2320. grace

  2321. oh

  2322. Lord

  2323. for

  2324. perseverance

  2325. and we

  2326. ask that

  2327. your

  2328. grace

  2329. will be

  2330. with us

  2331. day

  2332. by

  2333. day

  2334. in

  2335. all

  2336. our

  2337. responsibilities

  2338. to

  2339. our

  2340. families

  2341. to

  2342. our

  2343. neighbors

  2344. to

  2345. our

  2346. work

  2347. colleagues

  2348. to

  2349. our

  2350. fellow

  2351. Christians

  2352. grant

  2353. your

  2354. grace

  2355. to

  2356. us

  2357. Lord

  2358. we

  2359. pray

  2360. as

  2361. we

  2362. meet

  2363. with

  2364. the

  2365. world

  2366. in

  2367. its

  2368. hostility

  2369. to

  2370. the

  2371. gospel

  2372. grant

  2373. us

  2374. grace

  2375. to

  2376. treat

  2377. them

  2378. as

  2379. we

  2380. know

  2381. you

  2382. would

  2383. treat

  2384. them

  2385. grace

  2386. to

  2387. be

  2388. tactful

  2389. and

  2390. patient

  2391. and

  2392. grace

  2393. to

  2394. depend

  2395. Lord

  2396. that

  2397. you

  2398. would

  2399. bless

  2400. us

  2401. and

  2402. do

  2403. for

  2404. us

  2405. even

  2406. more

  2407. than

  2408. we

  2409. are

  2410. able

  2411. to

  2412. ask

  2413. or

  2414. even

  2415. think

  2416. hear

  2417. us

  2418. we

  2419. pray

  2420. for

  2421. Jesus

  2422. sake

  2423. Amen

  2424. well

  2425. we're

  2426. singing

  2427. in

  2428. conclusion

  2429. tonight

2512. Now may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,
