  1. We extend a very warm welcome to you all this morning and those of you who are joining us

  2. online as well, welcome to you as well. There are a number of things on the information sheet today

  3. that I want to mention. I'm not going to go through them all by any means, there's quite a

  4. number of them. There is tea served after the service this morning and that'll be in the hall

  5. and everybody's welcome to that, visitors included. If you're a visitor we welcome you and you're

  6. welcome to stay for tea, coffee with us as well after the service. The service this evening will

  7. be conducted by Mr Scott McLeod. Deacons Court is due to meet tomorrow evening, that'll be in the

  8. upper hall in person and that's at 7pm and then on Wednesday after a time of worship we'll have the

  9. annual meeting of the congregation and for the annual meeting the statement including the

  10. trustees report and financial statement for last year 2021 that will be presented. There is a

  11. copy of the statement available today if you want to take one with you in advance. These are available

  12. here and also in the seminary. Now at the close of the annual meeting a presentation will be made to

  13. Mr Mortimer McPhail who you remember resigned as treasurer, retired I suppose would be a good word,

  14. after more than 19 years of dedicated service. So it'd be great to have a good attendance for the

  15. annual meeting but also for that particular presentation as well. And then after that the

  16. Kirk Session will meet immediately after that in the upper hall and will be pleased to meet with anyone

  17. who wishes to profess their faith and take communion for the first time. And as you know the communion is due

  18. next Lord's Day morning at 11am, that'll be here in the church and as was intimated over the last few

  19. weeks the procedure will be the same as we had at the last most recent communion. So we'll just go by the

  20. same way of carrying out the communion for this time and then for the future we'll assess just how to go ahead.

  21. This is just still part of the recovery from the times of COVID restrictions and spacing and so on

  22. which we're no longer required to keep but there will be a space in between each pew that's used for

  23. the communion table. And ahead of the communion there'll be services on Saturday evening, a service on

  24. Saturday evening and a communion early morning prayer meeting and you can see these intimated there

  25. on the 4th and 5th on Saturday and Sunday. And please get in touch with Alistair MacLeod if you

  26. are going to join any of these by Zoom. The LDOS annual rally takes place this coming Friday at 7.30,

  27. that'll be in the town hall and it'll also include the launching of a new book produced by the branch

  28. called Remember the Sabbath Day. And finally there's a book available today called Our Faithful Queen

  29. and it's a very well produced and colorful book. It's a very very nice book. It's intended for giving

  30. out to people and we're suggesting that if you can take a copy you can please just give it out to those

  31. that you may know in the neighborhood or your friends that aren't able to come to church

  32. or are able to come to church but don't. In any case use your own initiative but it is for handing

  33. out so there's no charge for it. So it's available today for that purpose. It's a book of prayers that

  34. the Queen over the years has used. She was given a book of readings and prayers in advance of her

  35. coronation all these years ago and she has used that and made statements of her own faith which are

  36. included in the book as well. So it's a very useful book to actually give out especially to any that

  37. you know would benefit from it. Well these are the only intimations I need to mention. Let's worship

  38. God now. We're singing firstly today from Psalm 30. Psalm number 30 and that's in the Scottish Psalter

  39. page 239 the tune is St. Minver verses 1 to 5. And we're reverting back to four singings which we used to

  40. have for our services in any case. So again today we're back to having four singings, four items of praise.

  41. Lord I will thee extol for thou hast lifted me on high and over me thou to rejoice made'st not mine enemy.

  42. O thou who art the Lord my God I in distress to thee with loud cries lifted up my voice

  43. thou hast healed me. And so on down to verse 5 we'll stand to sing. Lord I will thee extol.

  44. Lord I will thee extol for thou hast lifted me on high and over me thou to rejoice made'st not mine enemy.

  45. O thou who art the Lord my God I in distress to thee with loud cries lifted up my voice and love hast healed me.

  46. O Lord my soul that hast healed me. O Lord my soul that hast sought out and rescued from the grave.

  47. O Jesus that hastened me inessional tales to thee with luke myself than my rage of our deliverance Would he have gått and completed up with time before his gehad each other?

  48. God to die,

  49. have life

  50. against me

  51. save.

  52. O ye that

  53. at this

  54. holy

  55. one, sing

  56. grace unto

  57. the Lord,

  58. and give

  59. unto

  60. them

  61. that

  62. praying

  63. his

  64. holiness

  65. record.

  66. For

  67. God

  68. of whom

  69. and thus

  70. his wrath

  71. life

  72. in this

  73. favor lies.

  74. We

  75. being made

  76. whole

  77. at night

  78. and

  79. truth

  80. and

  81. born

  82. the joy

  83. in our

  84. eyes.

  85. Amen.

  86. We're now

  87. going to call

  88. upon the

  89. Lord in

  90. prayer.

  91. Let's

  92. join

  93. together

  94. in

  95. prayer.

  96. O Lord,

  97. our

  98. gracious

  99. God,

  100. we thank

  101. you for

  102. the many

  103. assurances

  104. that we

  105. have given

  106. as we

  107. come

  108. together

  109. to worship

  110. you.

  111. We give

  112. thanks

  113. especially

  114. for the

  115. assurance

  116. that you

  117. make us

  118. welcome

  119. in your

  120. presence

  121. through the

  122. provision you

  123. have made

  124. for us

  125. in the

  126. Lord Jesus

  127. Christ.

  128. We come

  129. together

  130. today, O

  131. Lord,

  132. and come

  133. to approach

  134. you,

  135. conscious

  136. that he

  137. is the

  138. way,

  139. the truth,

  140. and the

  141. life,

  142. conscious

  143. that he

  144. is that

  145. new and

  146. living way

  147. which you

  148. have opened

  149. up into

  150. your presence,

  151. that we

  152. might be

  153. able to

  154. approach

  155. you and

  156. find

  157. acceptance

  158. and a

  159. place in

  160. your

  161. presence

  162. and your

  163. approval.

  164. We thank

  165. you, O

  166. Lord,

  167. for all

  168. that that

  169. contains

  170. for us

  171. today and

  172. for the

  173. ground that

  174. it gives

  175. us to be

  176. assured of

  177. God's

  178. own welcome.

  179. We pray

  180. for faith, O

  181. Lord, to

  182. come before

  183. you, believing

  184. that you are

  185. God, that you

  186. are a rewarder

  187. of those who

  188. diligently seek

  189. you.

  190. We thank you

  191. today for the

  192. faith that you

  193. create in the

  194. hearts of your

  195. people, for the

  196. way in which by

  197. your Holy Spirit

  198. you give us to

  199. believe in you, to

  200. trust in you, to

  201. entrust ourselves

  202. to you.

  203. We thank you,

  204. Lord, that that

  205. faith brings so

  206. much into our

  207. possession, and yet

  208. we do not

  209. trust in our

  210. faith itself, but

  211. in the one who

  212. is foundational

  213. to it, the

  214. God and Father

  215. of our Lord

  216. Jesus Christ, and

  217. Christ himself as

  218. our Savior.

  219. We bless you,

  220. Lord, today that

  221. we find ourselves

  222. addressing you in

  223. his name, confident

  224. that you have

  225. provided all that

  226. we need in him

  227. through his work

  228. on earth, through

  229. his continuing

  230. intercession in

  231. heaven.

  232. Lord, we thank

  233. you today for

  234. this place of

  235. worship.

  236. We thank you

  237. for this occasion

  238. of worship.

  239. We thank you

  240. for all that you

  241. provide for us

  242. as means by

  243. which we

  244. worship you.

  245. We give thanks

  246. for your word, and

  247. we give thanks for

  248. the way that you

  249. call us to praise

  250. your name through

  251. singing your praise.

  252. We thank thee for

  253. the access we have

  254. to you in prayer.

  255. We pray, O Lord,

  256. that our access to

  257. you in prayer may

  258. constantly be in

  259. use by us.

  260. you call upon us in

  261. your word to pray

  262. to you continually.

  263. And Lord, although

  264. we know we cannot

  265. be every second of

  266. every day engaged

  267. meaningfully in

  268. prayer, yet we give

  269. thanks for every

  270. occasion that we

  271. can, and for the

  272. way that even as we

  273. go about our

  274. vocation and work

  275. and places in the

  276. world, we can

  277. address you in prayer

  278. and seek your help

  279. and give you praise.

  280. we give thanks, O

  281. Lord, for all that

  282. you have been to us

  283. over these past

  284. years, especially in

  285. this time of COVID

  286. pandemic.

  287. And Lord, help us,

  288. we pray, to continue

  289. to give thanks to

  290. you for the way that

  291. you have watched

  292. over us and kept

  293. us, for the way

  294. that you have

  295. continued to guide

  296. us and teach us

  297. by your word, for

  298. the way that you

  299. have continued to

  300. provide for us in

  301. the gospel, the

  302. services of worship

  303. that we gladly

  304. engage in.

  305. And Lord, we ask

  306. that this may

  307. constantly be in

  308. our mind to give

  309. thanks to you and

  310. to remind ourselves

  311. of how easily things

  312. can change in your

  313. providence, how much

  314. we are dependent

  315. upon you, how we

  316. cannot steer our

  317. own course through

  318. life successfully.

  319. And if we try to do

  320. so, Lord, you make

  321. it clear to us that

  322. our life is in your

  323. hands.

  324. We pray today that

  325. as we gather in your

  326. presence, these

  327. realities may indeed

  328. be true for each

  329. one of us.

  330. We ask for everybody

  331. gathered here today

  332. and for all who are

  333. joining us online.

  334. Lord, may your

  335. blessing rest upon us.

  336. May your Holy Spirit

  337. be active in our

  338. experience.

  339. May your word be

  340. applied to our

  341. hearts with power.

  342. May we find, O Lord,

  343. today that we take it

  344. with us and its

  345. teaching into all that

  346. lies ahead of us,

  347. even in this week

  348. itself.

  349. We thank you for the

  350. blessings that we

  351. enjoy in the gospel,

  352. the way that you

  353. continue to provide

  354. for us individually

  355. and as a congregation

  356. and in our homes and

  357. families.

  358. Lord, we pray that your

  359. blessing will be

  360. extended to us even

  361. more as we seek an

  362. increase in our own

  363. commitment to you and

  364. our love for you.

  365. We pray, Lord, that you

  366. would continue to fuel

  367. our lives by your

  368. grace and by the

  369. strength of your

  370. power.

  371. Enable us to proceed

  372. and persevere onwards

  373. in that life of

  374. faith.

  375. Help us, we pray

  376. today, to resist all

  377. inclinations away from

  378. you, every temptation

  379. from whatever source,

  380. O Lord, that seeks to

  381. draw our minds and our

  382. lives away from the

  383. life that is in you,

  384. from the fountain of

  385. life that we know is

  386. with yourself.

  387. Lord, we ask that you

  388. would enable us day by

  389. day to continue to

  390. persevere in that way

  391. of trusting in you and

  392. serving you.

  393. Bless again, we pray,

  394. our children, our young

  395. people.

  396. We thank you today for

  397. them as they gather in

  398. creche and in tweenies

  399. and Sunday school.

  400. And for those of them,

  401. Lord, who are now

  402. approaching adulthood,

  403. who gather from time to

  404. time in Bible class, in

  405. youth fellowship, in

  406. other ways of joining

  407. together and hearing

  408. about the things of

  409. God.

  410. O Lord, as they are

  411. taught and as they learn

  412. these things, grant to

  413. them that they may be

  414. firmly entrenched and

  415. established in your ways

  416. so that they may continue,

  417. Lord, to in their lives

  418. engage with you and

  419. continue in the teaching

  420. they received to follow

  421. it through in their

  422. practice in our adult

  423. life.

  424. Remember, too, today,

  425. Lord, those who have

  426. gone away from you,

  427. those who have strayed

  428. away from following you

  429. faithfully, those for

  430. whom this time of

  431. COVID pandemic and

  432. restrictions and all of

  433. the things associated

  434. with that have been so

  435. difficult and so

  436. challenging, and whose

  437. love has grown cold and

  438. who today are not found

  439. in a place of worship.

  440. Gracious Lord, be

  441. merciful to them,

  442. whether belonging to

  443. this congregation or

  444. others.

  445. We know how devastating

  446. this time has been for

  447. some.

  448. We know how some have

  449. lost their relish, how

  450. some have even turned

  451. away from following you

  452. altogether.

  453. O Lord, our God, be

  454. pleased, we pray, to

  455. bless them, to recover

  456. them, to reach out to

  457. them, O Lord, and take

  458. them back and graciously

  459. work in our midst, in our

  460. communities, to bring

  461. others who may have never

  462. before thought about you,

  463. but whose minds have been

  464. upon these eternal issues

  465. during this providence.

  466. Grant that you would

  467. bless that to them.

  468. We pray for those who

  469. lead us in our nation, and

  470. as we lament, O Lord, the

  471. evidences we find of

  472. departure from your

  473. values and your ways and

  474. your laws amongst them, we

  475. pray for them, for you

  476. have called us to do

  477. this.

  478. We pray for our

  479. governments in Scotland

  480. and in Westminster, in

  481. Ireland and Wales.

  482. We pray, O Lord, as a

  483. nation, that we may be

  484. more and more bound

  485. together in your truth,

  486. and not in the ways of

  487. human beings, however

  488. much they may appeal to

  489. our own nature.

  490. Grant, Lord, that your

  491. blessing, therefore, will

  492. be with our First

  493. Minister, our government,

  494. our Prime Minister and

  495. his government.

  496. And, Lord, grant at this

  497. time that we may see

  498. more and more of your

  499. own people coming to

  500. raise their voice against

  501. the departures morally and

  502. spiritually that we find so

  503. sadly marking our nation and

  504. our leaders at this time.

  505. Remember our Queen.

  506. Be with our Lord in her

  507. old age.

  508. Be with her as she finds her

  509. at this time of her life,

  510. her movement to be

  511. restricted and her ability

  512. to go from place to place

  513. to be less than it used to

  514. be.

  515. We thank you for the

  516. declarations of her faith

  517. that she has made and that

  518. she continues to make, and

  519. for the guidance that that

  520. has given to her family.

  521. And we pray that you would

  522. bless her, O Lord, at this

  523. time as she comes to

  524. celebrate this Jubilee.

  525. We be thankful, O Lord, for

  526. her leadership over the

  527. nation over these many

  528. years and for the ways in

  529. which she has withstood so

  530. many tests.

  531. And we pray that you would

  532. continue, Lord, to uphold

  533. her and to continue to

  534. maintain her in her own

  535. faith and attachment to you.

  536. And now we pray that you

  537. would remember us here as we

  538. continue in your presence.

  539. Bless to us your word and

  540. help us to sing your praises

  541. joyfully.

  542. And we pray all of these

  543. things, seeking pardon and

  544. cleansing of all our sin.

  545. For Jesus' sake.

  546. Amen.

  547. Let's sing further now to

  548. God's praise from Psalm 61.

  549. Psalm 61, again, it's in the

  550. Scottish Psalter version.

  551. Page 293.

  552. And verses 1 to 4.

  553. O God, give ear unto my

  554. cry, unto my prayer attend.

  555. From the utmost corner of the

  556. land, my cry to thee I'll send.

  557. We'll sing to the tune

  558. Salzburg, verses 1 to 4.

  559. O God, give ear unto my cry.

  560. Amen.

  561. Amen.

  562. O God, give ear unto my cry, unto my

  563. prayer attend.

  564. From the utmost corner of the land,

  565. my cry to thee I'll send.

  566. What time my heart is overwhelmed,

  567. and in perplexity,

  568. where thou be lead unto the rock,

  569. the fire is the night.

  570. For thou hast for my enmity,

  571. a shelter by thy power,

  572. and for defence against my foes,

  573. the vast, he laves strong tower.

  574. within thy cover,

  575. within thy cover,

  576. none will die,

  577. forever will abide.

  578. And I'll cover all thy wings,

  579. with God that lets me hide.

  580. Now as we return to God's Word,

  581. we're reading two passages this morning.

  582. First of these is in 2 Samuel, chapter 15.

    2 Samuel 15 chapter mention

  583. And then we're also going to read from the book of Psalms,

  584. and Psalm 63.

  585. So firstly, it's in 2 Samuel, chapter 15,

    2 Samuel 15 chapter mention

  586. reading verses 13 to 23.

  587. 2 Samuel 15, verse 13.

    2 Samuel 15:13

  588. This is after David had fled,

  589. after the rebellion of Absalom,

  590. the coup that Absalom had led.

  591. So we read at verse 13,

  592. a messenger came to David,

  593. saying,

  594. The hearts of the men of Israel have gone after Absalom.

  595. Then David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem,

  596. Arise, and let us flee,

  597. or else there will be no escape for us from Absalom.

  598. Go quickly,

  599. lest he overtake us quickly,

  600. and bring down ruin on us,

  601. and strike the city with the edge of the sword.

  602. And the king's servants said to the king,

  603. Behold, your servants are ready to do whatever my lord the king decides.

  604. So the king went out, and all his house sold after him,

  605. and the king left ten concubines to keep the house.

  606. And the king went out, and all the people after him,

  607. and they halted at the last house.

  608. And all his servants passed by him,

  609. and all the Carithites, and all the Pelithites,

  610. and all the six hundred Gittites who had followed him from Gath,

  611. passed on before the king.

  612. Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite,

  613. Why do you also go with us?

  614. Go back and stay with the king,

  615. for you are a foreigner and also an exile from your home.

  616. You came only yesterday,

  617. and shall I today make you wander about with us?

  618. Since I go, I know not where.

  619. Go back and take your brothers with you,

  620. and may the Lord show steadfast love and faithfulness to you.

  621. But Ittai answered the king,

  622. As the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives,

  623. wherever my lord the king shall be,

  624. whether for death or for life,

  625. there also will your servant be.

  626. And David said to Ittai,

  627. Go then, pass on.

  628. So Ittai the Gittite passed on with all his men,

  629. and all the little ones who were with him.

  630. And all the land wept aloud as the people passed by,

  631. and the king crossed the brook Kidron,

  632. and all the people passed on towards the wilderness.

  633. And we turn now to the book of Psalms,

  634. and Psalm 63.

  635. Psalm 63.

  636. Psalm that's entitled,

  637. Psalm of David,

  638. when he was in the wilderness of Judah.

  639. Psalm 63.

  640. O God, you are my God.

  641. Earnestly I seek you.

  642. My soul thirsts for you.

  643. My flesh faints for you as in a dry and weary land,

  644. where there is no water.

  645. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,

  646. beholding your power and glory.

  647. Because your steadfast love is better than life,

  648. my lips will praise you.

  649. So I will bless you as long as I live.

  650. In your name I will lift up my hands.

  651. My soul shall be satisfied as with fat and rich food,

  652. and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips.

  653. When I remember you upon my bed

  654. and meditate on you in the watches of the night.

  655. For you have been my help,

  656. and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.

  657. My soul clings to you.

  658. Your right hand upholds me.

  659. But those who seek to destroy my life

  660. shall go down into the depths of the earth.

  661. They shall be given over to the power of the sword.

  662. They shall be a portion for jackals.

  663. But the king shall rejoice in God.

  664. All who swear by him shall exult.

  665. For the mouths of liars will be stopped.

  666. And once again we pray for God to bless

  667. these passages of his word to us today.

  668. Now before we turn to look at Psalm 63 this morning,

  669. let's sing once again.

  670. We're singing in Psalm 62,

  671. and this time from the Sing Psalms version.

  672. You'll find that on page 79.

  673. Psalm 62, page 79.

  674. The tune is Heron Gate.

  675. And we'll sing verses 1 to 8.

  676. My soul finds rest in God alone.

  677. From him comes my salvation sure.

  678. My safety, fortress, sheltering rock.

  679. In him alone I am secure.

  680. How long will you assault a man?

  681. Do you all seek to lay him low,

  682. this leaning wall, this tottering fence,

  683. and bring about his overthrow?

  684. They plan his fall from his high place.

  685. They take delight in spreading lies.

  686. With false and flattering mouths they bless.

  687. But in their hearts curse and despise.

  688. And so on, down to verse 8.

  689. My soul finds rest in God alone.

  690. From him comes my salvation sure.

  691. My safety, fortress, sheltering rock.

  692. In him alone I am secure.

  693. In him alone I am secure.

  694. I long will you are going to do.

  695. From him alone I am secure.

  696. From him comes my salvation sure.

  697. From him comes my salvation sure.

  698. From him comes my salvation sure.

  699. From him comes my salvation sure.

  700. The 50 fortress, sheltering rock, in heaven alone I am secure.

  701. How long will you, a softer man, do you all seek to live in love?

  702. This leaning wall, this tottering fence, and may now act this overthro.

  703. They plan this hope from this high list, they take the light in setting lights,

  704. with false and flattering mouths they bless, but in their hearts, first and desies.

  705. Find rest, my soul, in God alone, and there my hope is ever true.

  706. My safety fortress, sheltering rock, in heaven alone I am secure.

  707. My honour and salvation rest, on God my love and my default.

  708. O people, trust in him always, to him alone for a true heart.

  709. Well, for a short time this morning, will you please turn with me to Psalm 63 in the Book of Psalms.

  710. I'm going to look at some of the contents of this psalm as we go through it fairly quickly,

  711. but looking at some of the main points.

  712. A psalm of David when he was in the wilderness of Judah.

  713. There are times when the worst experiences we may have to go through in this life

  714. bring out the very best in people.

  715. Of course, the opposite is also true.

  716. When the worst experiences or conditions will sometimes bring out the worst in people as well.

  717. Sometimes even the best conditions can bring out the worst in people.

  718. But not so here.

  719. Because here is David in very difficult circumstances in the wilderness.

  720. And what he brings out before us in this psalm is really a confession of his faith in God.

  721. A confession that is just full of beauty and emotion and power and confidence in God.

  722. And the setting for it, as we find in the title, is when he was in the wilderness of Judah.

  723. We're not sure that it was exactly at the same time as he was fleeing from Absalom,

  724. but it certainly fits the context.

  725. And when you look at verse 11 there,

  726. the king shall rejoice in God and what it says.

  727. It appears that that is a very likely context for this psalm to have been written

  728. in relation to David's experiences in the wilderness when he had to flee for a time from Absalom.

  729. When Absalom had gathered support from many of the people and risen up against David

  730. and forced him to leave the city as king.

  731. And here in this great confession of faith,

  732. we have something that is so very important and relevant to ourselves.

  733. In our wilderness experiences, David is obviously literally in the wilderness,

  734. but God's people have always taken this psalm to be emblematic or symptomatic

  735. or a picture for them, an image for them,

  736. of the difficulties that they go through in this life that can actually be described as wilderness,

  737. can be described as going through difficult times such as you go through physically

  738. when you go through, as he says here, a dry and weary land where there is no water.

  739. And that has been the experience of people over the past couple of years,

  740. especially during the more serious lockdown and the aftermath of that

  741. with the COVID restrictions that were then put in place.

  742. And some people, of course, are still finding it very difficult to recover from that,

  743. to build up their lives again from that.

  744. And maybe you yourself and myself are amongst that number as well.

  745. But whatever wilderness experience you may have or have had,

  746. or you may be going through even at this time,

  747. and if you're online as well and part of your difficulty is that you have not yet managed

  748. to make your way back to the gathered worship of God,

  749. then I hope this psalm itself will say something to you,

  750. to reassure you, to encourage you, to bring you this measure of praise to God

  751. that will draw you to be with God's people as we are here today together in this place of worship.

  752. I'm going to divide the psalm into three.

  753. It really divides itself into three.

  754. Verses one to four, first of all, we'll take that as David's desire after God.

  755. And then in verses five to eight, we'll call that David's delight in God.

  756. And then the final few verses, eight, nine to 11, David's defense by God.

  757. So there's David's desire, there's David's delight, and there's David's defense.

  758. And as we go through these, I hope we'll see how they are relevant to our own circumstances in life,

  759. because that's really what the Bible is for.

  760. It's not for us just to study this as a piece of history,

  761. as a piece of biography or autobiography on the part of David.

  762. It's here as God's word, relevant for our circumstances too.

  763. And in David's desire after God, you first of all see his longing and his confession at the very beginning.

  764. Oh God, you are my God.

  765. And that's really what runs right through the whole of the psalm.

  766. It's central to all of the rest of the psalm and what's stated there.

  767. You are my God.

  768. Earnestly, I seek, who is confessing immediately.

  769. Despite his circumstances, he has not lost sight of who his God is.

  770. He has not lost sight of the fact that this God is still his God,

  771. and that he wants to be known as one of God's people.

  772. That's so important.

  773. It's so crucial.

  774. In all the circumstances of life, that we keep our minds on the fact that God,

  775. this God, this God of the Bible is our God.

  776. And that when our circumstances change, and especially when they become difficult and challenging,

  777. nothing has changed from God's point of view.

  778. Nothing has changed in his plan for us.

  779. It's always been planned this way.

  780. And the difficulties and the trials and the challenges,

  781. whether they be spiritual or mental or whatever trauma they might be,

  782. and there are many of them,

  783. and we've all experienced some of them to one degree or another.

  784. For the people of God, they can still say and want to be able to reaffirm,

  785. O God, you are my God.

  786. I don't want any other God but you.

  787. And you see, the longing that David has is really put in terms of the longing of a friend for his friend.

  788. It's a longing on David's part for God as his best friend.

  789. God is no mere acquaintance for David.

  790. He's not some figure that he's just come to acknowledge in a formal fashion as part of his religion.

  791. He is his dear friend.

  792. He is his Lord.

  793. He is his God.

  794. He is creator.

  795. He is his savior.

  796. This is what he is longing after, that he would have more again of God.

  797. And especially, I think, he's obviously looking at the times when he was in the sanctuary,

  798. when he was able to go to the temple in verse 2 there,

  799. and his longing is that that would return,

  800. that he would be back again with God's people,

  801. worshiping him in the sanctuary that was built for that purpose.

  802. And he's eager for this God and eager as soon as can possibly be.

  803. And the word earnestly there is an interesting word.

  804. The older translations have,

  805. Early will I seek you.

  806. And probably it's best taking it rather than earnestly,

  807. although earnestly is built into that.

  808. If you're actually coming early in the morning to seek the Lord,

  809. then obviously there's an earnestness about that as well.

  810. But the earliness of it is important.

  811. For example, it fits verse 6 there,

  812. When I remember you upon my bed and meditate on you in the watches of the night.

  813. David's not confining his seeking after God,

  814. his communion with God to the daytime,

  815. or to the hours during the day when that may be easier to fit in.

  816. He is saying in the watches of the night,

  817. I meditate upon you.

  818. Every spare moment he has.

  819. And here he is in the wilderness.

  820. You might think he needs all the time he can get for his sleep.

  821. And he does.

  822. But he still wants to have communion with God.

  823. And that's the secret here.

  824. Really in many ways a key to the expression of faith

  825. that he brings out in the psalm.

  826. And that's a reminder to ourselves that

  827. if you take this as early will I seek you,

  828. as well as earnestly,

  829. it's a reminder to ourselves how important it is

  830. not to let your troubles keep you away from God.

  831. Not to let your troubles become an argument against seeking God earnestly.

  832. Not to let the difficulties, the challenges, the wilderness periods of life

  833. actually put a distance between you and your God.

  834. It should be for you and for me the other way about.

  835. Let your troubles take you to God, as it were.

  836. Let the troubles of your life be a means of drawing near to God.

  837. Of seeking God's face like David is here, even in the wilderness.

  838. This is what he's saying.

  839. You are my God earnestly.

  840. Early I am seeking you.

  841. My soul thirsts for you.

  842. My flesh longs for you.

  843. And there's such an intensity in that,

  844. which I find a huge challenge to myself.

  845. I'm sure you say the same.

  846. When he says here,

  847. my soul thirsts for you.

  848. My flesh faints for you.

  849. He's really talking about his whole being,

  850. being taken up with this.

  851. Everything that's there in him, in his soul,

  852. even his very flesh,

  853. his very physical frame,

  854. is affected by this desire for God,

  855. this longing to go back into fellowship with his friend

  856. in the sanctuary where he once used to be.

  857. And there's a very interesting thing here

  858. where he says in verse 2,

  859. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary.

  860. And what he's really saying by that

  861. is that the thirst that he now has for God,

  862. the intensity that he expresses by,

  863. my flesh faints for you as in a dry and weary land

  864. where there is no water.

  865. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary.

  866. In other words, David is saying,

  867. I don't want my wilderness longing after you

  868. to be any less intense

  869. than it was when I was in the sanctuary

  870. when I had the freedom to be there as king.

  871. You know, and that raises for yourself and myself

  872. a question and indeed a challenge for us today again.

  873. Are we here today gathered with longing hearts?

  874. Are we gathered here with thirsty souls?

  875. Are we gathered here in a way that really longs

  876. to meet with God?

  877. Have we come just to praise him outwardly,

  878. to sing some of the psalms that we've been singing,

  879. to hear his word expounded,

  880. to hear it read,

  881. to follow through in the reading,

  882. to follow the prayers,

  883. the prayer of the pulpit,

  884. and your own prayers as well?

  885. Surely this is your desire.

  886. Surely this is my desire.

  887. Surely this is something that you had

  888. before you came into this building today,

  889. that there was a measure.

  890. I'm not saying it's going to be

  891. the intensity of David's,

  892. because I can't follow that myself

  893. many other times that I come to church.

  894. Sadly.

  895. But here is a man

  896. who is so intent in his eagerness

  897. and his longing for God

  898. that he can say even in the wilderness,

  899. Lord, as I've looked upon you in the sanctuary,

  900. as I did long after you there,

  901. so I'm longing after you now.

  902. You see, that says so much about our difficulties,

  903. our trials, our periods of wilderness.

  904. They are for us to deal with God,

  905. to have communion with God,

  906. to seek God,

  907. to yearn after God,

  908. as what David is doing here.

  909. When I was in the study this morning,

  910. just going over the notes for the service today,

  911. I looked out the window of the study,

  912. and there in the little tree growing up,

  913. or the big trees as well,

  914. outside the study in the garden,

  915. are all these fledgling sparrows,

  916. just newly out of the nest,

  917. and the energy with which they appeal

  918. to the parent birds,

  919. come and feed me.

  920. Give me something to feed me.

  921. Give me my breakfast.

  922. And the parent birds flitting back and forth

  923. with the worms or flies,

  924. whatever it was,

  925. constantly flitting in response

  926. to the cry of the fledgling,

  927. the little baby sparrow.

  928. And I looked out the window and I thought,

  929. I just wish I would go to church myself today

  930. with the desire,

  931. with the longing,

  932. with the hunger of that little sparrow

  933. that is so eager and so longing

  934. for a crumb,

  935. for a fly,

  936. for a worm

  937. from its parent's mouth,

  938. that I could find myself

  939. in the pulpit today,

  940. preaching the gospel,

  941. and yet in my heart yearning after God

  942. with that hunger,

  943. something of what David has here.

  944. As I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,

  945. beholding your power and your glory,

  946. so my soul thirsts after you.

  947. Friends,

  948. we have souls,

  949. despite what you see and hear out in the world there,

  950. that we're just creatures

  951. without any spiritual dimension of this kind.

  952. We have souls for a purpose.

  953. And one of the great purposes

  954. for you having a soul

  955. and my having a soul

  956. is that you will long after God,

  957. that you will love communion with God,

  958. that you will use

  959. the teaching of the Bible

  960. in your times of wilderness,

  961. in your times of challenge,

  962. in your times of trial,

  963. in your times of difficulty

  964. to bring you to God

  965. to thirst after Him.

  966. God has designed us

  967. in His creation of us.

  968. He has designed us

  969. for communion with Himself.

  970. He has designed us

  971. to be even in our times

  972. of wilderness and difficulty

  973. to yearn after Him,

  974. to seek after Him.

  975. You know,

  976. there's a sense in which

  977. even the expression

  978. that we sometimes have

  979. of confessing an absence

  980. of this longing

  981. in the presence of God.

  982. That itself is an expression

  983. of longing

  984. because you want it

  985. to be different.

  986. You want it to be

  987. more than it is.

  988. You want an increased hunger

  989. for God.

  990. And so we come today

  991. seeking that

  992. God will bless this word

  993. of David

  994. all of these years ago to us

  995. and that whatever it is today

  996. is a trial to you.

  997. Make it an occasion

  998. for meeting with God.

  999. Make it an occasion

  1000. for longing after God.

  1001. Make it an occasion

  1002. for drawing

  1003. the strength of God

  1004. into your life

  1005. in these circumstances.

  1006. Samuel Rutherford,

  1007. a famous Scottish theologian

  1008. of long ago,

  1009. had very many short

  1010. but powerful statements

  1011. and sayings.

1012. One of them was this,

  1013. we live so far

  1014. from the well

  1015. yet complain

  1016. but dryly

  1017. of our dryness.

  1018. We live so far

  1019. from the well

  1020. and yet complain

  1021. but dryly

  1022. of our dryness.

  1023. We're conscious

  1024. at times

1025. that we're not as near

  1026. to God

  1027. as we should be

  1028. and yet our complaint

  1029. about that is

  1030. rather dry,

  1031. he says,

1032. compared to what it should be,

  1033. compared to the longing

1034. of David in this psalm.

  1035. We live so far

  1036. from the well.

  1037. That's of our own

  1038. choosing at times.

  1039. We lose our relish.

1040. We decrease in our hunger.

1041. Our love does grow cold.

  1042. Yet we complain

  1043. but dryly

  1044. of our dryness.

  1045. Today,

1046. let it be for me

  1047. and for you

  1048. an occasion

1049. of drawing near the well,

  1050. shortening the distance

  1051. if we're at a distance

  1052. from the well

  1053. that God is

  1054. and coming

  1055. to be there

  1056. with him

  1057. to draw our water

  1058. of life from him.

  1059. David's desire

  1060. after God

  1061. and David

  1062. is not belittling

  1063. anything

  1064. when he says

  1065. your loving kindness

  1066. is better than last,

  1067. your steadfast love

  1068. is better than life

  1069. so because of that

  1070. my lips

  1071. will praise you

1072. so I will bless you

1073. as long as I live

  1074. in your name

1075. I will lift up my hands.

  1076. Now you can understand

  1077. the steadfast love

  1078. we've come across

  1079. these words many times.

  1080. God's steadfast love

1081. is not just his love

  1082. his eternal love

  1083. for his people

  1084. but his love

  1085. in covenant with them.

  1086. He has bonded himself

  1087. to his people

1088. and his people to him

  1089. and the love

  1090. that we experience

  1091. from God

  1092. as we're bonded

  1093. to him

  1094. by faith

  1095. and by love

  1096. on our own part

  1097. as created by him

  1098. well that's something

  1099. he says here

  1100. is better than life.

  1101. Now he's not

  1102. he's not belittling

  1103. or minimizing

  1104. the benefits of life.

  1105. The many good things

  1106. we have in life

  1107. we appreciate

  1108. we thank God for

  1109. we don't belittle them

  1110. but they cannot compare

  1111. with his steadfast love.

  1112. They can't compare

  1113. with his loving kindness.

  1114. As you know

  1115. I love the songs

  1116. of Ellie Holcomb

1117. and in one of these songs

  1118. she speaks really

  1119. to God

  1120. in the song

  1121. and it's entitled

  1122. You Love Me Best.

  1123. Most of you

  1124. some of you

  1125. will probably know it.

  1126. My mother

  1127. she holds me

  1128. when I'm weak

  1129. she consoles me

  1130. my troubles

  1131. weigh on her mind

  1132. my tears fall down

  1133. from her eyes

  1134. but you

  1135. you loved me better.

  1136. My father

  1137. beside me

  1138. holds out his arm

  1139. to guide me

  1140. his wisdom

  1141. waits in silence

  1142. he speaks

  1143. and I grow quiet

  1144. but you

  1145. you loved me better.

1146. And there may come a day

  1147. when all other loves

  1148. have gone away

  1149. when darkness

  1150. hems me in

  1151. you'll be right

1152. where you have always been

  1153. closer than the heart

  1154. within my chest

1155. because you loved me best.

1156. the ring around my finger

  1157. to have and hold

  1158. forever

  1159. it circles round

  1160. like years

  1161. that we've walked

  1162. through joys and tears

  1163. but you

  1164. you have loved

  1165. me better.

1166. And there is no better love

  1167. and the loving kindness

  1168. the steadfast love

  1169. of God

  1170. and in the wilderness

  1171. oh how David appreciates

  1172. the steadfast love

  1173. God has for him.

  1174. David's desire

  1175. after God

  1176. and his delight

  1177. in God

  1178. secondly

  1179. from verse 5

  1180. to 8

  1181. more briefly

  1182. you can see here

  1183. how he has great

  1184. satisfaction in God

1185. and how he is saying

  1186. to himself

1187. this is how it's going

  1188. to continue

  1189. as far as possible

  1190. my soul

  1191. will be satisfied

  1192. with fat

  1193. and rich food

  1194. could translate that

1195. as a present as well

  1196. my soul is satisfied

  1197. with fat

  1198. and rich food

  1199. my mouth

  1200. praises you

  1201. with joyful lips

1202. but if you take it

  1203. as his own reference

  1204. to the future

1205. as far as he sees it

1206. then this is what he's saying

  1207. this is his intention

  1208. this is his aim

  1209. this is the purpose

  1210. of his life

  1211. my soul

  1212. will be satisfied

  1213. with fat

  1214. and rich food

  1215. when I remember you

  1216. upon my bed

  1217. and meditate you

  1218. on you

  1219. in the watches

  1220. of the night

  1221. how could he say

  1222. this sort of thing

  1223. in the wilderness

  1224. that his soul

  1225. will be satisfied

  1226. with rich

  1227. and fat food

  1228. how could he say

  1229. my mouth

  1230. will praise you

  1231. with joyful lips

1232. well the secret to it

1233. is really in verse 6

  1234. it's his communion

  1235. with God

  1236. that has led

  1237. to this conviction

  1238. to this purpose

  1239. to this determination

  1240. to continue

  1241. to be satisfied

  1242. in God

  1243. you see the wilderness

  1244. sharpens our wakefulness

  1245. doesn't it

  1246. sometimes you and I

  1247. need something like that

  1248. something

  1249. of a challenge

  1250. to come into

  1251. our lot

  1252. just to remind us

  1253. of who God is

  1254. and what he's like

  1255. and especially

  1256. if we have

  1257. gone astray

  1258. somewhat

  1259. just to bring us

  1260. back to a right

  1261. perspective

  1262. and balance

1263. and to go on again

  1264. following the Lord

  1265. it has produced

  1266. for David

  1267. this satisfaction

  1268. this intensity

  1269. of praise

  1270. and he also speaks

  1271. about safety

  1272. for you have been

  1273. my help

  1274. he's reflecting upon

  1275. what God has been

1276. to him up to that moment

  1277. you have been

  1278. my help

  1279. and in the shadow

  1280. of your wings

  1281. I will sing

  1282. for joy

  1283. my soul

  1284. clings to you

  1285. your right hand

  1286. upholds me

  1287. what he's saying is

1288. this is how I've always

  1289. found you Lord

  1290. and you're not going

  1291. to change now

  1292. even though I'm

  1293. in the wilderness

  1294. you are still

  1295. this same God

  1296. and it's interesting

  1297. he says there

  1298. in the shadow

  1299. of your wings

  1300. I will sing

  1301. for joy

  1302. you have been

  1303. my help

  1304. it may be

  1305. that that's the imagery

  1306. of the mother bird

  1307. protecting its

  1308. little chicks

  1309. but I think it's

  1310. probably more

  1311. better to take it

  1312. as a reference

  1313. to David's experience

  1314. in the sanctuary

  1315. in the temple

  1316. where

  1317. the

  1318. the cherubim

  1319. with their wings

  1320. outstretched

  1321. represented

  1322. or part of

  1323. what represented

  1324. the presence

  1325. of God

  1326. above the mercy seat

  1327. where the cherubim

  1328. were located

  1329. and in Psalm 61

  1330. you have something

  1331. very much like that

  1332. he says

  1333. let me dwell

  1334. in your tent

  1335. forever

  1336. let me take refuge

  1337. under the shelter

  1338. of your wings

  1339. it's more obvious

  1340. there I think

  1341. he's saying

  1342. let me dwell

  1343. in your tent

  1344. in your sanctuary

  1345. forever

  1346. let me take refuge

  1347. under the shelter

  1348. of your wings

  1349. in other words

  1350. whatever you take

  1351. it David is certainly

  1352. looking to the protection

  1353. of God

  1354. that has been

  1355. his privilege

  1356. up to now

  1357. and what he's saying

  1358. is that's not

  1359. that's not going

  1360. to change

  1361. this is where

  1362. my safety is

  1363. in the shadow

  1364. of your wings

  1365. and in God's

  1366. own right hand

  1367. upholding him

  1368. you see how wonderfully

  1369. the two things

  1370. go together

  1371. we have a responsibility

  1372. ourselves

  1373. to bring ourselves

1374. to be in the presence

  1375. of God

  1376. to worship him

  1377. to communicate with him

  1378. to pray to him

  1379. but our ultimate confidence

1380. is not in that itself

  1381. David's ultimate confidence

  1382. is in God's own

  1383. right hand

  1384. upholding him

  1385. similar to Psalm 73

  1386. you recall

  1387. where he says

  1388. in Psalm 73

  1389. after

  1390. not David

  1391. but Asaph

  1392. this time

  1393. but very similar words

  1394. Asaph

  1395. is making a confession

  1396. of how near

  1397. he came

  1398. to sliding away

  1399. altogether

  1400. but he came back

  1401. to the sanctuary

  1402. of God

1403. when he went in there

  1404. he was brought

  1405. to see

  1406. how foolish he was

  1407. in his thinking

  1408. he was thinking

1409. the world was better off

  1410. because it didn't have

  1411. the troubles

1412. that he as a believer

  1413. had

  1414. but he went into

  1415. the sanctuary

  1416. then realized

  1417. how foolish he was

  1418. brutish and ignorant

  1419. like a beast

  1420. before you

  1421. then he said

  1422. nevertheless

  1423. I'm continually

  1424. with you

  1425. you hold me

  1426. by my

1427. you hold my right hand

  1428. you guide me

  1429. with your counsel

  1430. and afterwards

  1431. you will receive me

  1432. to glory

  1433. it is you see

  1434. his confidence

  1435. there is the foundation

  1436. in which David

  1437. stands confidently

  1438. the grasp

  1439. that God

  1440. has of him

  1441. yes he's thankful

  1442. for the grasp

1443. that he has of God

  1444. in his faith

  1445. and in his love

  1446. and in his hope

1447. and all of these things

  1448. are important to him

  1449. but it's God's own

  1450. right hand

  1451. that he looks to

  1452. particularly

  1453. my soul

  1454. clings to you

  1455. these words really mean

  1456. my soul

  1457. follows hard

  1458. after you

  1459. is the AV translation

  1460. it means

  1461. to pursue

  1462. something earnestly

  1463. and it fits in

  1464. with the seeking

  1465. of God

  1466. by David

  1467. it's a pursuit

  1468. it's a seeking

  1469. after

  1470. it's following

  1471. hard after you

  1472. it's like someone

  1473. running a race

  1474. clinging

  1475. holding on

  1476. but especially

  1477. conscious of his need

  1478. to be held

  1479. by God

  1480. isn't that where

  1481. your own confidence

  1482. where your own

  1483. security is today

  1484. you're thankful

  1485. for faith

  1486. you're thankful

  1487. for the way

  1488. in which

  1489. God has brought

  1490. himself into

  1491. your life

  1492. in such a way

  1493. that has

  1494. convinced you

  1495. of your need

1496. to hold on to him

  1497. to trust in him

  1498. but you don't

  1499. go to eternity

  1500. fully persuaded

  1501. that that's all

  1502. you need

  1503. for your safety

  1504. that's got something

  1505. else beneath it

  1506. something else

  1507. bigger than that

  1508. God himself

  1509. and God's own

  1510. grasp

  1511. and God's own

  1512. hold of your life

  1513. so here's David's

  1514. delight in God

  1515. his satisfaction

  1516. and his safety

  1517. and especially

  1518. in the way God

  1519. still holds him

  1520. where he is

  1521. and then there's

  1522. David's defense

  1523. I'll be very brief

  1524. with this

  1525. David's defense

  1526. verses 9 to 11

  1527. David's defense

  1528. by God

  1529. having seen his

  1530. delight in God

  1531. and his desire

  1532. after God

  1533. look at what he's

  1534. saying here

  1535. in verses 9 to 11

  1536. but those who

  1537. seek to destroy

  1538. my life

  1539. shall go down

  1540. into the depths

  1541. of the earth

  1542. they shall be

  1543. given over

  1544. to the power

  1545. of the sword

  1546. there shall be

  1547. a portion

  1548. for jackals

  1549. but the king

  1550. shall rejoice

  1551. in God

  1552. all who swear

  1553. by him

  1554. shall exult

  1555. swear allegiance

  1556. that is I think

  1557. for the mouths

  1558. of liars

  1559. will be stopped

  1560. a couple of things

  1561. there

  1562. you'll see

  1563. first of all

  1564. how God's

  1565. commitment

  1566. to his people

  1567. means that he is

  1568. committed against

  1569. their enemies

  1570. God's steadfast

  1571. love for his people

1572. is not going to be

  1573. something that

  1574. regards them

  1575. in any kind

  1576. of loose

  1577. or indifferent

  1578. way as they face

  1579. enemies

  1580. as they face

  1581. challenges

  1582. from their enemies

  1583. whatever enemy

  1584. that might be

  1585. God is committed

  1586. to their protection

  1587. God is committed

  1588. to looking after

  1589. his own people

  1590. his steadfast love

  1591. ensures that

  1592. and the solemn

  1593. thing is that

  1594. those who challenge

  1595. the people of God

  1596. those who challenge

  1597. God himself

  1598. will end up

  1599. he says here

  1600. they shall be given

  1601. over to the depths

  1602. of the earth

  1603. they shall die

  1604. they shall come

  1605. under God's judgment

  1606. and his justice

  1607. and the king

  1608. he says

  1609. shall rejoice

  1610. in God

  1611. whatever happens

  1612. to my enemies

  1613. David is saying

  1614. because God

  1615. is my God

  1616. oh Lord

  1617. oh God

  1618. you are my God

  1619. and because

1620. that is still the case

  1621. the king

  1622. shall rejoice

  1623. in God

1624. you see what he's saying

  1625. I'm in the wilderness

  1626. I've had to flee

  1627. from Jerusalem

  1628. my son Absalom

1629. has risen up against me

  1630. he's gathered support

  1631. that has forced me

  1632. away from the throne

  1633. for this period

  1634. and as we read

  1635. in 2 Samuel

  1636. he wasn't really sure

  1637. where he was going

  1638. to end up

  1639. he just kept going

  1640. into the wilderness

  1641. along with those

  1642. who were in support

1643. but he's still the king

  1644. he is still convinced

  1645. that he is God's

  1646. appointed king

  1647. the king

  1648. shall rejoice

  1649. in God

  1650. as you know

1651. often in the Old Testament

  1652. the kingship

  1653. of the kings

  1654. of the Old Testament

  1655. the good kings

  1656. especially

  1657. are types of Christ

  1658. they are representations

  1659. of Jesus for us

1660. and many of the Psalms

  1661. so brilliantly

  1662. so brilliantly

  1663. portray the kingship

  1664. of Jesus

  1665. as you read through

  1666. what they say

  1667. about the kings

  1668. of the times

  1669. whether it's David

  1670. or Solomon

  1671. whoever

  1672. and it doesn't matter

  1673. how many millions

  1674. of people today

  1675. will reject Jesus

  1676. how many people

  1677. out there

  1678. will be convinced

1679. that there is no God

  1680. how many people

  1681. will actually

  1682. say

1683. and throw in our teeth

  1684. the gospel

1685. that we seek to maintain

1686. not just in the preaching

  1687. of it

  1688. but in your testifying

  1689. to it

  1690. in your lives

  1691. however many times

  1692. people will turn

  1693. and say

  1694. well

  1695. why are you actually

  1696. trusting in someone

  1697. who's dead

  1698. why are you trusting

  1699. in a God

  1700. whose existence

  1701. you cannot prove

  1702. it's just simply

  1703. like all other religions

  1704. people will say

  1705. they're at the end

  1706. of the day

  1707. they're fine

1708. if you want to follow that

  1709. but they're not actually

  1710. useful

  1711. and they're not truth

1712. is that going to change

  1713. things as far as

  1714. God is concerned

  1715. supposing you're

  1716. the only believer

  1717. left in the world

  1718. and you're surrounded

  1719. by people who say

  1720. it's foolish to trust

  1721. in God

1722. a God that you cannot see

  1723. and have never proved

  1724. in your heart

  1725. and in my heart

1726. the Lord is still king

  1727. and he will always

1728. continue to be the king

  1729. it doesn't matter

  1730. how many people

  1731. deny it

  1732. that's not going to

  1733. change the truth

  1734. people can try

1735. as hard as they like

  1736. to disprove

  1737. the existence

  1738. of God

  1739. and that'll go on

  1740. to the end

  1741. of the world

  1742. but the truth

  1743. remains the truth

  1744. and God

  1745. remains God

  1746. and the king

  1747. the Jesus

  1748. who is king

  1749. shall rejoice

  1750. shall continue

1751. to be who he is

  1752. and shall do all

  1753. he has promised

  1754. to do

  1755. for his people

  1756. all

  1757. who swear by him

  1758. shall exult

  1759. they shall be

  1760. exalted

  1761. in rejoicing

  1762. is what it means

1763. and if that was true

  1764. of David here

  1765. prophesying

  1766. of the future

  1767. for himself

  1768. and for his followers

  1769. how much more

  1770. is it true

  1771. of Jesus

  1772. and his people

  1773. whatever the world

  1774. may say

  1775. and it doesn't

  1776. we're not saying

  1777. that doesn't matter

  1778. it's our duty

  1779. to try

  1780. present the gospel

  1781. and the truth

  1782. to them

  1783. but ultimately

  1784. it doesn't matter

  1785. because the king

  1786. still lives

  1787. and the king

  1788. is going to return

  1789. and the king's

  1790. followers

  1791. and the king's

  1792. people

  1793. all who swear

  1794. by him

  1795. all who are

  1796. in allegiance

  1797. to him

  1798. they shall

  1799. exult

  1800. they shall have

  1801. everlasting

  1802. rejoicing

  1803. nothing

  1804. and no one's

  1805. going to spoil

  1806. that

  1807. or make that

  1808. untrue

  1809. as we read

  1810. in the song

  1811. of Solomon

  1812. where you find

  1813. the longings

  1814. of this

  1815. lady after

  1816. her beloved

  1817. in chapter 1

  1818. and verse 4

  1819. we can finish

  1820. with this

  1821. it is her desire

  1822. here is the bride

  1823. this woman

  1824. confessing her love

  1825. for her beloved

  1826. in which you find

  1827. an image of

  1828. our own love

  1829. for the Lord

  1830. he says

  1831. draw me

  1832. and we will run

  1833. after you

  1834. let us run

  1835. the king has

  1836. brought me

  1837. into his

  1838. chambers

  1839. we will

  1840. exult

  1841. and rejoice

  1842. in you

  1843. we will extol

  1844. your love

  1845. more than wine

  1846. rightly

  1847. do they

  1848. love you

  1849. take these words

  1850. home with you

  1851. rightly

  1852. do they

  1853. love you

  1854. and nobody

  1855. can take that

  1856. conviction

  1857. out of your

  1858. heart today

  1859. because it's

  1860. based on

  1861. God's

  1862. truth

  1863. in Jesus

  1864. Christ

  1865. Lord our God

  1866. we pray

  1867. that today

  1868. you'd bless

  1869. to us

  1870. this portion

  1871. of your word

  1872. help us

  1873. we pray

  1874. like David

  1875. long ago

  1876. help us

  1877. to trust

  1878. in you

  1879. with the

  1880. trust

  1881. that he

  1882. spoke of

  1883. and the

  1884. desire

  1885. that he

  1886. could

  1887. confess

  1888. and Lord

  1889. we pray

  1890. that you

  1891. would intensify

  1892. our desire

  1893. our longing

  1894. after you

  1895. we pray

  1896. that in

  1897. these days

  1898. in which

  1899. we live

  1900. when so

  1901. few

  1902. yearn

  1903. after you

  1904. in the

  1905. world

  1906. in which

  1907. we live

  1908. with that

  1909. desire

  1910. that is

  1911. true to

  1912. your word

  1913. gracious

  1914. Lord

  1915. we pray

  1916. that that

  1917. will be

  1918. true of

  1919. ourselves

  1920. help us

  1921. to delight

  1922. in you

  1923. help us

  1924. to be

  1925. thankful

  1926. for your

  1927. own

  1928. sheltering

  1929. of your

  1930. people

  1931. for your

  1932. protection

  1933. of them

  1934. and for

  1935. the way

  1936. that your

  1937. truth

  1938. will endure

  1939. how many

  1940. challenges

  1941. it may

  1942. have to

  1943. face

  1944. we don't

  1945. know

  1946. Lord

  1947. we know

  1948. that your

  1949. truth

  1950. will continue

  1951. on through

  1952. into eternity

  1953. help us

  1954. to prize

  1955. it

  1956. to commend

  1957. it to the

  1958. world in

  1959. which we

  1960. live

  1961. to rejoice

  1962. in it

  1963. ourselves

  1964. hear us

  1965. now we

  1966. pray

  1967. for Jesus

  1968. sake

  1969. Amen

  1970. we're going

  1971. to praise

  1972. God now

  1973. in conclusion

  1974. in Psalm

  1975. 36

  1976. Psalm number

  1977. 36

  1978. in the

  1979. Sing

  1980. Psalms

  1981. version

  1982. you'll find

  1983. that on

  1984. page

  1985. 44

  1986. the tune

  1987. is

  1988. Bays

  1989. of

  1990. Harris

  1991. singing

  1992. verses

  1993. 5

  1994. to

  1995. 9

  1996. your

  1997. steadfast

  1998. love

  1999. is

  2000. great

  2001. O

  2002. Lord

  2003. it

  2004. reaches

  2005. heaven

  2006. high

  2007. your

  2008. faithfulness

  2009. is

  2010. wonderful

  2011. extending

  2012. to the

  2013. sky

  2014. and so

  2015. on

  2016. through

  2017. to

  2018. verse

  2019. 9

  2020. your

  2021. steadfast

  2022. love

  2023. is

  2024. great

  2025. O

  2026. Lord

  2027. your

  2028. steadfast

  2029. love

  2030. is

  2031. great

  2032. O

  2033. Lord

  2034. it

  2035. reaches

  2036. heaven

  2037. high

  2038. your

  2039. faithfulness

  2040. is

  2041. wonderful

  2042. and

  2043. extending

  2044. to

  2045. the

  2046. sky

  2047. your

  2048. righteous

  2049. vessels

  2050. bear

  2051. me

  2052. laid

  2053. like

  2054. mountains

  2055. high

  2056. on

  2057. sea

  2058. your

  2059. justice

  2060. depths

  2061. like

  2062. ocean

  2063. depths

  2064. of

  2065. man

  2066. and

  2067. peace

  2068. you

  2069. keep

  2070. high

  2071. precious

  2072. is

  2073. your

  2074. steadfast

  2075. love

  2076. what

  2077. confidence

  2078. is

  2079. a

  2080. blessed

  2081. prince

  2082. o

  2083. high

  2084. and

  2085. love

  2086. thine

  2087. shelter

  2088. in

  2089. the

  2090. shadow

  2091. of

  2092. your

  2093. wings

  2094. they

  2095. feast

  2096. within

  2097. your

  2098. hearts

  2099. and

  2100. day

  2101. from

  2102. streams

  2103. of

  2104. pure

  2105. delight

  2106. for

  2107. men

  2108. you

  2109. are

  2110. the

  2111. source

  2112. of

  2113. light

  2114. in

  2115. your

  2116. light

  2117. peace

  2118. in

  2119. light

  2120. if you

  2121. allow me

  2122. please to

  2123. get to

  2124. the

  2125. main

  2126. door

  2127. I'll

  2128. greet

  2129. you on

  2130. the

  2131. way

  2132. out

  2133. now

  2134. may the

  2135. grace of

  2136. the

  2137. Lord

  2138. Jesus

  2139. Christ

  2140. the

  2141. love

  2142. of

  2143. God

  2144. the

  2145. Father

  2146. and

  2147. the

  2148. communion

  2149. of

  2150. the

  2151. Holy

  2152. Spirit

  2153. be

  2154. with

  2155. you

  2156. now

  2157. and

  2158. evermore

  2159. Amen
