  1. So let's begin our worship now this evening. We're singing firstly in Psalm 98, Psalm number 98, that's on page 129.

  2. Sorry, I think it's actually 98. What has the presenter got?

  3. 98.

  4. 98, okay.

  5. Psalm 98, verses 1 to 4, page 129.

    Psalms 98:1–4

  6. Oh, sing a new song to the Lord for wonders he has done. His right hand and his holy arm the victory have won.

  7. The Lord declared his saving work and made it to be known. To all the nations of the world his righteousness is shown.

  8. Psalm 98, these verses marked 1 to 4 to God's praise.

  9. Oh, sing a new song to the Lord for wonders he has done. His right hand and his holy arm the victory have won.

  10. The Lord declared his saving work and made it to be known.

  11. To all the nations of the world his righteousness is shown.

  12. His right hand and his holy arm the victory have won.

  13. The Lord has won.

  14. The Lord has won.

  15. The Lord has won.

  16. The Lord has won.

  17. The Lord za'ud.

  18. Can you praise you?

  19. The Lord has won.

  20. The Lord has won.

  21. His name and Jeкуins superboy and I know.

  22. こちら of holy 점 or his holy name.

  23. Until the Lord has been given.

  24. The Lord has won.

  25. His name and Jeu smolonaise on the holy 신.

  26. There if God never has won.

  27. The nations of the earth have seen what God has done.

  28. Our God, your great deliverance, I wish my hand alone.

  29. Acclaim the Lord, O all the earth, shout thou thee and rejoice.

  30. Make new sin and be true, and to him lift up your voice.

  31. Let's now call upon the Lord in prayer.

  32. Let's join together in prayer.

  33. Our gracious and eternal God, once again as we gather here in your presence, we ask that

  34. you would draw near to us as we seek to draw near to you.

  35. We give thanks, O Lord, for these words that we have sung, that set out how you have revealed

  36. yourself to us as human beings and how the indications are throughout the world that

  37. God lives.

  38. And we thank you that that is especially the case through the testimony of your people.

  39. We pray, O Lord, that we ourselves may continue to have that concern to make you known, and

  40. to make you known to those around us who do not themselves seek after you.

  41. We thank you tonight that we are able to worship you in a gathered congregation of your people.

  42. And we give thanks for the many ways in which you have promised to regard the gatherings of

  43. your people in such a way as would bless them and take delight in them.

  44. And we do ask, O Lord, tonight that we may know this for ourselves.

  45. Help us as we turn to your word to read it and to hear of its teaching.

  46. And enable us, we pray, by your Holy Spirit to lay these things to heart.

  47. Forbid that we should be so familiar with your word and yet not have it direct our path in this

  48. world.

  49. And, Lord, we ask that you would continue to bless us as a congregation as we look forward

  50. in anticipation to these days to come.

  51. We have already, Lord, heard of the activities that we hope to take part in and to have as part

  52. of the congregation's outreach and witness.

  53. And we do pray for your blessing in regard to all of these things.

  54. We give thanks for the opportunity to do this.

  55. And we pray that, Lord, that you would bring people to involve themselves and to offer themselves

  56. as helpers in these various activities.

  57. And we ask that those that we have contact with will actually come, Lord, to know of your love,

  58. of your grace in the Lord Jesus Christ, and of the way in which in the gospel you bring

  59. so many truths to bear upon us in our present lives.

  60. We ask that you would continue, Lord, to bless the Smiths as they settle into their new location.

  61. And as we anticipate Callum's induction, Lord, we pray that you would provide for this for us

  62. and enable him, we pray, to settle into his ministry here in our midst.

  63. We pray that you would bless the presbytery as once again we have an induction within the

  64. bounds of the presbytery.

  65. And we thank you for all that has come together, O Lord, to make this such a rich and exciting

  66. anticipation on our part.

  67. We pray that his ministry here will be greatly owned and blessed of the Holy Spirit.

  68. We ask, O Lord, that you would graciously endow him with all that is necessary for him

  69. to be our assistant.

  70. And we ask at this time that his family too, wife and children, will be blessed as they settle

  71. into a new environment, as the children adjust to a new school.

  72. We ask, O Lord, that all of that will be smooth for them and that you would be pleased to grant

  73. them your grace to that end.

  74. We pray, too, for what we anticipate doing in the summer months.

  75. We ask that you would bless our testimony as we seek to have buildings opened and explanations

  76. given as to certain aspects of the testimony of our church.

  77. And we pray that you would bless the provision that we make for breakfast for those, Lord,

  78. who are unable to find a breakfast elsewhere on that morning.

  79. We ask that you are our witness to them and all that we give out by way of leaflets or word

  80. of mouth testimony will be blessed.

  81. And we come to you, Lord, and ask that you would continue to prepare the way for us.

  82. Remember the anticipated holiday club as well.

  83. We ask that you would bless Fiona as she continues to arrange, along with those who help her, make

  84. arrangements for that.

  85. We pray for the children who have already indicated their intention to come.

  86. And we ask, O Lord, that that will be blessed and that you'd be pleased to grant us a sign

  87. of your own favor and comfort in regard to all of these matters.

  88. We pray, O Lord, for those who tonight can't be with us, those of our number who are ill at this time,

  89. especially those who are seriously ill.

  90. We pray that you'd bless them, whether they be at home or in hospital.

  91. And we ask, O Lord, that you would reach out to them, minister to them by your own spirit and

  92. give them the comfort and the preparation they need.

  93. And help them, Lord, we pray, as they look forward to better times.

  94. We pray that you would grant blessing to them.

  95. And to that end, we pray for those who mourn the passing of loved ones and have had mourning

  96. in their experience, sometimes for many years.

  97. And, Lord, we know that sometimes that pain, even if it be lessened, it is still very much with

  98. those who grieve.

  99. And we do commend them to you tonight.

  100. And do ask, O Lord, that you would comfort them, that your Holy Spirit will comfort them.

  101. You are the comforter, the one who draws alongside your people and who brings your own

  102. great gift of grace to them.

  103. And we ask that you would be pleased, Lord, to give calm and quiet hearts.

  104. To those who are hurting at this time.

  105. Bless, too, those who are struggling with their faith due to events in their own lives or

  106. what they see in the world.

  107. Gracious Lord, we commit them to you and ask that you would draw near to them, to draw them

  108. to yourself.

  109. We pray for those who have turned their back upon the church and ask that you would bless

  110. them, O Lord, and bring them back again to the fellowship of your people, not only in

  111. this congregation, but other congregations, too.

  112. We realize, O Lord, that the past two years have had a devastating effect on many people.

  113. And we pray that those who have been affected, especially spiritually or in their mental health,

  114. will know your blessing at this time.

  115. And reach out to them, we pray, also.

  116. And minister grace to their hearts.

  117. Remember us now, Lord, as we remain here in your presence.

  118. And as we look into your word, once again, we pray that your Holy Spirit will take the

  119. things of Christ and show them to us.

  120. And in all of these things, Lord, accept our praise.

  121. We have so much to give thanks for.

  122. So many things that we receive from you by way of gifts of your grace from day to day.

  123. Help us not to be neglectful, Lord, to give thanks even for the things that we have in

  124. common that we take sometimes, Lord, for granted.

  125. And we ask that you would continue to make us thankful and dependable upon yourself for

  126. our daily lives.

  127. So receive us now, we pray, and pardon our many sins.

  128. For Jesus' sake.

  129. Amen.

  130. Once again, we're going to praise God.

  131. This time we're praising God from Psalm 90.

  132. Psalm 90, that's on the Scottish Psalter version, page 350.

  133. We're singing from verse 11 as far as verse 14.

  134. This psalm is a prayer of Moses.

  135. That's in the book of Psalms.

  136. That's the title that's given to it, a prayer of Moses, the man of God.

  137. And throughout this prayer of Moses, he has been dealing with his thoughts.

  138. He has been upon how short his own and human life is in comparison to God and how uncertain

  139. life can be.

  140. And yet he comes to pray here in these verses that God would be merciful and gracious to

  141. us.

  142. So verse 11.

  143. Who knows the power of thy wrath?

  144. According to thy fear, so is thy wrath.

  145. Lord, teach thou us our end and mine to bear.

  146. And so to count our days, that we our hearts may still apply, to learn thy wisdom and thy truth,

  147. that we may live thereby.

  148. Turn yet again to us, O Lord.

  149. How long thus shall it be?

  150. Let it repent thee now for those that servants are to thee.

  151. O with thy tender mercies, Lord, us early satisfy.

  152. So we rejoice shall all our days and still be glad in thee.

  153. And may we think of our situation, not only in terms of our church needs and our personal

  154. needs, also our national needs, as we realize how much in our ways we have departed from the

  155. ways of the Lord and how we can appeal to him in prayer, even as we sing these words of

  156. the psalm.

  157. Turn yet again to us, O Lord.

  158. How long thus shall it be?

  159. So these verses 11 to 14, to God's praise.

  160. Amen.

  161. Amen.

  162. Amen.

  163. Amen.

  164. Let it repent thee now for those last sermons are to thee.

  165. O with thy tenderness, Jesus, Lord, how sternly satisfied.

  166. So we rejoice, shall all our days, and still be had in thee.

  167. Let's turn to read God's Word as we find that tonight in the book of Genesis.

  168. The book of Genesis and chapter 6.

  169. We're going to read from verse 9 of chapter 6 through to verse 5 of chapter 7.

  170. So Genesis chapter 6, beginning at verse 5.

    Genesis 6 chapter mention

  171. These are the generations of Noah.

  172. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation.

  173. Noah walked with God, and Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

  174. Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight, and the earth was filled with violence.

  175. And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.

  176. And God said to Noah, I have determined to make an end of all flesh,

  177. for the earth is filled with violence through them.

  178. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

  179. Make yourself an ark of gopher wood.

  180. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch.

  181. This is how you are to make it.

  182. The length of the ark, 300 cubits.

  183. Its breadth, 50 cubits.

  184. And its height, 30 cubits.

  185. Make a roof for the ark, and furnish it to a cubit above, and set the door of the ark in its side.

  186. Make it with lower, second, and third decks.

  187. For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth,

  188. to destroy all fresh in which is the breath of life under heaven.

  189. Everything that is on the earth shall die.

  190. But I will establish my covenant with you,

  191. and you shall come into the ark, you and your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you.

  192. And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ark,

  193. to keep them alive with you.

  194. They shall be male and female,

  195. of the birds according to their kinds, and of the animals according to their kinds.

  196. Of every creeping thing of the ground, according to its kind, two of every sort,

  197. shall come into you to keep them alive.

  198. Also take with you every sort of food that is eaten and stored up.

  199. It shall serve as food for you and for them.

  200. Noah did this.

  201. He did all that God commanded him.

  202. Then the Lord said to Noah,

  203. Go into the ark, you and all your household,

  204. for I have seen that you are righteous before me in this generation.

  205. Take with you seven pairs of all clean animals, the male and his mate,

  206. and a pair of animals that are not clean, the male and his mate,

  207. and seven pairs of the birds of the heavens also,

  208. male and female, to keep their offspring alive on the face of all the earth.

  209. For in seven days I will send rain on the earth,

  210. for forty days and forty nights,

  211. and every living thing that I have made,

  212. I will blot out from the face of the ground.

  213. And Noah did all that the Lord had commanded him.

  214. And so on may God come with His blessing to follow a reading of His Word.

  215. We'll sing once again, this time in Psalm 11 on page 13.

  216. And we're singing verses 3 to 7.

  217. A psalm that, as you know, deals with the judgment of God

  218. and the solemnities of God's judgment

  219. and how the righteous will nevertheless find a place in His presence.

  220. So Psalm 11 from verse 3,

  221. If the foundations are destroyed and all around there is decay,

  222. whatever can the righteous do surrounded by such disarray?

  223. The Lord is in His holy place,

  224. the Lord is on His heavenly throne,

  225. His eyes observe the human race,

  226. and in His sight each one is known.

  227. And so on to the end of the Psalm from verse 4,

  228. from verse 3,

  229. if the foundations are destroyed.

  230. If the foundations are destroyed,

  231. and all around there is decay,

  232. whatever come the righteous do,

  233. surround it by such disarray.

  234. The Lord is in His holy place,

  235. the Lord is on His heavenly throne,

  236. His eyes observe the human race,

  237. and in His sight each one is known.

  238. The Lord examines all the just,

  239. the righteous ones in cruisant taste,

  240. that all those who love wickedness

  241. and violence is so detest.

  242. Upon the wicked He will reign,

  243. His highly gold and sulfur hot,

  244. a scorching wind will beat on them,

  245. such punishment will be their loss.

  246. For God the Lord is righteous still,

  247. In righteousness He takes delight,

  248. and they alone will see His face,

  249. through our in heart and life of Christ.

  250. Please join with me to the New Testament,

  251. to the letter to the Hebrews,

  252. and chapter 11.

  253. Hebrews chapter 11,

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  254. and tonight we're looking especially at verse 7,

  255. which relates to the passage we read in Genesis.

  256. Hebrews 11 at verse 7,

  257. By faith Noah, being warned by God

  258. concerning events as yet unseen,

  259. in reverent fear,

  260. constructed an ark

  261. for the saving of his household.

  262. By this he condemned the world

  263. and became an heir

  264. of the righteousness that comes by faith.

  265. Well, for very good reason,

  266. the major shipyards of the world

  267. have always been set near to the sea

  268. or else on the banks of a great river,

  269. such as the River Clyde

  270. in our own country,

  271. which was famous at one time

  272. for its shipbuilding

  273. and the quality of its shipbuilding.

  274. That's because, of course,

  275. when a ship needs to be launched,

  276. it requires a great deal of water

  277. to be nearby

  278. into which it can be launched.

  279. But just imagine

  280. what you would think or say

  281. if you saw somebody

  282. beginning to build

  283. a large ship

  284. out beside the hill

  285. Moornack,

  286. miles and miles

  287. away from the shore

  288. and out in the middle

  289. of the moorland.

  290. And imagine the media reports.

  291. If somebody went to start

  292. that kind of project,

  293. you can imagine the media

  294. taking an interest

  295. and going to actually interview

  296. the man who had started

  297. what looked like

  298. this silly project,

  299. building a huge ship

  300. so far from the sea.

  301. And imagine how the media

  302. would report that,

  303. especially during the interview

  304. if they asked him,

  305. why are you doing this?

  306. And he replied,

  307. well, because God told me.

  308. Just imagine what the headlines

  309. would actually then be.

  310. But that's what it was like

  311. for Noah.

  312. God told him to build

  313. this massive ark

  314. out of wood

  315. that would contain

  316. himself and his family

  317. and all the animals

  318. that God had commanded

  319. him to take into the ark

  320. to keep alive

  321. during the flood

  322. that God was going to bring

  323. on the earth.

  324. Just like the man

  325. out at Moornack,

  326. Noah would have been regarded

  327. by many of his generation

  328. as something of a crank,

  329. something,

  330. someone who was just

  331. involved in doing

  332. a work that was just bizarre.

  333. Why would he do such a thing?

  334. What was behind such a project?

  335. How could he possibly

  336. really be serious

  337. in what he was doing?

  338. And this is, of course,

  339. one of the things

  340. the Bible tells us

  341. about Noah,

  342. that it was by faith

  343. that he actually built

  344. this ark.

  345. By faith,

  346. Noah being warned

  347. by God concerning events

  348. as yet unseen

  349. in reverent fear

  350. constructed an ark

  351. for the saving

  352. of his household.

  353. So let's ask the question,

  354. first of all,

  355. what induced Noah

  356. to build this ark?

  357. And then the second question

  358. is what was the outcome

  359. of his building

  360. of the ark?

  361. And we're told that

  362. in the next part of the verse,

  363. by this he condemned

  364. the world

  365. and became an heir

  366. of the righteousness

  367. that comes by faith.

  368. So it's a two-fold outcome

  369. because side by side

  370. you've got salvation

  371. for himself

  372. and for his family

  373. and you've also got

  374. destruction

  375. for the rest of life

  376. on earth.

  377. What induced Noah

  378. to build the ark?

  379. What was he thinking?

  380. Can we get access

  381. to his thoughts?

  382. Can we get access

  383. to his mind?

  384. Yes, we can

  385. because the Bible

  386. actually tells us

  387. how it was

  388. that he came to do this.

  389. And we're told here

  390. in this verse

  391. that it was first of all

  392. because he was warned

  393. by God

  394. that he actually set

  395. about doing

  396. this great project.

  397. He was warned

  398. by God.

  399. He had a warning

  400. from God.

  401. It wasn't just

  402. a mere statement

  403. from God.

  404. We're told here

  405. that was actually

  406. a warning.

  407. You might say

  408. it was something like

  409. what you find

  410. ahead of tsunamis

  411. nowadays.

  412. The tsunami,

  413. of course,

  414. being massively destructive

  415. most of the time

  416. as we've seen,

  417. sadly,

  418. even during the course

  419. of our own lifetime.

  420. We've seen tsunamis

  421. in places of the world

  422. and some places

  423. that have caused

  424. massive loss of life

  425. and destruction.

  426. And there's nowadays

  427. a warning given

  428. in these places

  429. that are prone

  430. to tsunamis.

  431. There's an alarm

  432. throughout the cities

  433. or towns

  434. of an approaching tsunami.

  435. So,

  436. this was really

  437. for Noah

  438. equivalent

  439. to advance warning

  440. of this disaster

  441. that was coming

  442. on the world.

  443. God actually

  444. sent him a warning.

  445. God told him

  446. what was going

  447. to take place

  448. and God instructed him

  449. how he was

  450. to make preparation

  451. for this solemn event.

  452. That's what induced him

  453. to build this ark.

  454. And it wasn't just

  455. a warning of any kind,

  456. it was a warning

  457. from God himself.

  458. By faith,

  459. Noah,

  460. being warned by God,

  461. built this ark.

  462. He took it

  463. at face value.

  464. He didn't say

  465. about it

  466. that it was something

  467. that he didn't really

  468. need to be serious about

  469. or treat seriously.

  470. As far as he was concerned,

  471. it was from God himself.

  472. Not only did he have it

  473. for his own benefit,

  474. but we're told

  475. in 2 Peter

  476. about Noah

  477. being a preacher

  478. of righteousness.

  479. 2 Peter 2,

    2 Peter 2:5

  480. verse 5,

  481. that's how

  482. he is described

  483. as a preacher there

  484. of righteousness.

  485. And as he lived

  486. in his generation,

  487. his preaching

  488. of righteousness

  489. would, of course,

  490. take account

  491. of the fact

  492. that God

  493. had actually foretold him

  494. of this coming flood

  495. that was going

  496. to destroy life

  497. on earth.

  498. And so his preaching

  499. of righteousness

  500. would have been preaching

  501. in relation to

  502. that great disaster

  503. that was coming,

  504. imploring and appealing

  505. to his contemporaries

  506. to make preparation

  507. for this

  508. and to treat God's warning

  509. with the utmost seriousness.

  510. He believed it,

  511. he preached it,

  512. and that's what

  513. we also have

  514. because in 2 Peter,

  515. it's interesting how

  516. in 2 Peter,

  517. we didn't read that,

  518. we read the account

  519. of Genesis,

  520. of course,

  521. but in 2 Peter,

    2 Peter 3:3–7

  522. chapter 3,

  523. verses 3 to 7,

  524. you have something

  525. that really applies

  526. these times of Noah,

  527. this warning

  528. that Noah was given

  529. because he says

  530. that I'm writing

  531. this to you,

  532. beloved,

  533. stirring up your sincere

  534. mind by way

  535. of reminder

  536. that you should

  537. remember the predictions

  538. of the holy prophets

  539. and the commandments

  540. of the Lord and Savior

  541. through your apostles,

  542. knowing this,

  543. first of all,

  544. that scoffers will come

  545. in the last days

  546. with scoffing,

  547. following their own

  548. sinful desires.

  549. They will say,

  550. where is the promise

  551. of his coming?

  552. For ever since

  553. the fathers fell asleep,

  554. all things are continuing

  555. as they were

  556. from the beginning

  557. of creation.

  558. And then he says this,

  559. for they deliberately

  560. overlook this fact

  561. that the heavens

  562. existed long ago

  563. and the earth

  564. was formed out of water

  565. and through water

  566. by the word of God,

  567. and that by means

  568. of these,

  569. the world that then was

  570. was deluged with water

  571. and perished.

  572. By the same word,

  573. the word of God,

  574. the heavens and earth

  575. are now in existence,

  576. stored up,

  577. being kept

  578. until the day of judgment

  579. and the destruction

  580. of the ungodly.

  581. You see the parallel

  582. that Peter is drawing

  583. between what happened

  584. in the days of Noah

  585. and the warning that came

  586. in the days of Noah

  587. and what's now given to us

  588. through the gospel.

  589. This is our tsunami alert.

  590. This is God

  591. through the gospel saying,

  592. as surely as it happened

  593. in the days of Noah,

  594. so it's going to happen

  595. at the end of the world.

  596. This is actually

  597. what lies await

  598. in the history

  599. of mankind.

  600. And we have

  601. the application

  602. of that also

  603. in 2 Peter

  604. because he doesn't

  605. leave it at just

  606. saying that

  607. this is what is going

  608. to happen

  609. in chapter 3 again

  610. and verses 11

  611. and 14 and 15.

  612. He then draws

  613. the lessons

  614. for that for us.

  615. This is what he's saying,

  616. since all these things

  617. are thus to be dissolved,

  618. what sort of people

  619. ought you to be

  620. in lives of holiness

  621. and godliness,

  622. waiting for

  623. and hastening

  624. the coming

  625. of the day of God

  626. because of which

  627. the elements,

  628. the heavens,

  629. will be set on fire

  630. and dissolved

  631. and the heavenly bodies

  632. will melt

  633. as they burn.

  634. But we,

  635. according to his promise,

  636. are waiting

  637. for new heavens

  638. and a new earth

  639. in which righteousness

  640. dwells.

  641. And then he went on

  642. to apply it further,

  643. therefore, beloved,

  644. since you are waiting

  645. for these,

  646. be diligent

  647. to be found by him

  648. without spot

  649. or blemish

  650. and at peace

  651. and count

  652. the patience

  653. of the Lord.

  654. In other words,

  655. the way in which God

  656. has not yet come

  657. in his judgment

  658. is due to the patience

  659. of the Lord

  660. and he says,

  661. count

  662. or account

  663. the patience

  664. of the Lord

  665. as salvation

  666. as our beloved

  667. brother Paul

  668. also wrote

  669. to you.

  670. What is Peter

  671. saying there?

  672. He's saying,

  673. if you actually

  674. dismiss what happened

  675. in the days of Noah

  676. as just myth

  677. or just imagination

  678. or something

  679. that was fine

  680. for previous generations

  681. who didn't really

  682. understand the world

  683. as we know it,

  684. then you're really

  685. committing

  686. a very,

  687. very serious error

  688. because he's saying

  689. there's a parallel

  690. between what happened

  691. in the days

  692. of Noah

  693. and what's going

  694. to happen

  695. at the end

  696. of this world.

  697. The judgment

  698. of God

  699. will bring

  700. the destruction

  701. that's parallel

  702. to what happened

  703. in the days

  704. of Noah.

  705. We have

  706. a tsunami warning.

  707. The gospel

  708. is saying to us

  709. there is

  710. a disaster

  711. coming.

  712. There is

  713. an end coming

  714. to the creation

  715. as we know it.

  716. And tonight

  717. that warning,

  718. that alarm

  719. is being sounded

  720. in the preaching

  721. of the gospel,

  722. in the reading

  723. of our Bibles.

  724. But you see,

  725. it's not just

  726. that he received

  727. a warning from God,

  728. it was actually

  729. a warning

  730. concerning events

  731. yet unseen.

  732. You see,

  733. when a tsunami

  734. alarm goes off,

  735. those that are actually

  736. in that vicinity

  737. can't really see

  738. anything different

  739. to what they saw

  740. the previous day

  741. or the previous

  742. few hours.

  743. Because the tsunami

  744. warning is based

  745. on those who are

  746. monitoring these

  747. situations,

  748. very often from

  749. a distance,

  750. and it may still

  751. be very far

  752. out at sea,

  753. and you can't see

  754. it with the naked

  755. eye.

  756. When the alarm

  757. goes off,

  758. you look around

  759. you and say,

  760. well,

  761. what's changed?

  762. Things are just

  763. going on as they

  764. were.

  765. And this is what

  766. the Bible is

  767. actually telling us

  768. about the judgment

  769. of God as well,

  770. building on what

  771. happened in the

  772. days of Noah

  773. and Noah's

  774. experience by faith,

  775. being warned by

  776. God concerning

  777. events as yet

  778. unseen.

  779. Everything seems

  780. normal.

  781. There isn't any

  782. sign of any

  783. coming judgment.

  784. But the people

  785. of God know

  786. that the Bible

  787. doesn't lie,

  788. that God

  789. doesn't lie,

  790. and that Bible

  791. tonight is

  792. our alarm.

  793. And however much

  794. people may not

  795. believe that it's

  796. coming,

  797. that's not going

  798. to stop it.

  799. Not believing

  800. the Word of God

  801. is not going

  802. to change

  803. God's intentions.

  804. It's not going

  805. to alter

  806. God's purpose.

  807. And all the time

  808. that the world

  809. continues,

  810. this final disaster

  811. is gathering

  812. pace.

  813. Every day that

  814. goes by

  815. is a day nearer.

  816. We don't know

  817. how long it will

  818. be.

  819. The Bible doesn't

  820. tell us when

  821. the day of judgment

  822. will come.

  823. It doesn't tell us

  824. how many years

  825. we have to go

  826. in the history

  827. of the world

  828. before the Lord

  829. comes back,

  830. before this great

  831. disaster comes,

  832. when the earth

  833. and all that's in it

  834. will be dissolved

  835. and will disappear

  836. and will come under

  837. the fire of God's

  838. judgment to be

  839. replaced by a new

  840. heavens and a new

  841. earth in which

  842. righteousness dwells.

  843. But the Bible

  844. is our alarm call.

  845. It's gathering

  846. pace meantime,

  847. and it will burst

  848. upon the world

  849. as Jesus Himself

  850. preached in His day.

  851. with regard to

  852. the coming

  853. judgment of God.

  854. So you have

  855. the advantage

  856. tonight,

  857. and I have the

  858. advantage of a

  859. Bible.

  860. You have the

  861. advantage of

  862. belonging to a

  863. church that

  864. believes the

  865. Bible.

  866. You have the

  867. advantage of the

  868. gospel being

  869. preached,

  870. where the Bible's

  871. teaching is set out

  872. for us as best we

  873. can,

  874. and seeking that

  875. God will apply it

  876. to our own hearts

  877. and to yours as

  878. well.

  879. That Bible is

  880. telling me tonight

  881. what kind of person

  882. you ought to be

  883. knowing that this

  884. is actually coming.

  885. Know that you're

  886. going to actually

  887. face God in His

  888. judgment whenever

  889. it will come.

  890. So it was

  891. induced by having

  892. received a warning

  893. from God,

  894. and it was about

  895. things not yet

  896. seen.

  897. That's how it is

  898. exactly for

  899. ourselves tonight.

  900. We can't see

  901. the judgment.

  902. Still, as far as

  903. we're concerned,

  904. far off.

  905. But what God is

  906. saying is,

  907. it's real,

  908. and it will

  909. come in my

  910. time.

  911. And meantime,

  912. I've left you

  913. a window of

  914. opportunity,

  915. a day of

  916. grace.

  917. I've left it in

  918. my patience,

  919. God is saying,

  920. in my concern

  921. that sinners

  922. will be saved

  923. and not

  924. destroyed.

  925. And that

  926. brings us,

  927. thirdly,

  928. to see that

  929. what induced

  930. him was he

  931. received a

  932. warning,

  933. and he

  934. received a

  935. warning from

  936. God of

  937. things yet

  938. not seen,

  939. but he

  940. acted by

  941. faith.

  942. Now, of course,

  943. this great

  944. chapter is a

  945. chapter that

  946. lists all

  947. those who

  948. lived by

  949. faith and

  950. all those who

  951. did things

  952. by faith.

  953. He saw and

  954. believed God's

  955. Word and

  956. God's warning,

  957. and he took

  958. specific action

  959. in regard to

  960. that warning.

  961. Now, we have

  962. a Bible, as we

  963. said, and

  964. in faith,

  965. the faith of

  966. God's people,

  967. the faith that

  968. we exercise as

  969. we trust in

  970. God, as we

  971. use His Word,

  972. is a faith that

  973. responds in

  974. a certain way to

  975. each of the

  976. elements of

  977. God's Word.

  978. And the best

  979. definition of

  980. that is in

  981. Westminster

  982. Confession of

  983. Faith, where

  984. you find this

  985. actually said,

  986. by this faith,

  987. a Christian

  988. believes to be

  989. true whatever

  990. is revealed in

  991. the Word.

  992. Now, that's the

  993. first thing.

  994. A Christian

  995. believes to be

  996. true whatever

  997. is revealed in

  998. the Word, because

  999. it's God's Word.

  1000. It goes on to

  1001. say, for the

  1002. authority of

  1003. God Himself

  1004. speaking therein.

  1005. And this faith

  1006. acts differently

  1007. upon that which

  1008. each particular

  1009. passage thereof

  1010. contains,

  1011. yielding obedience

  1012. to the commands,

  1013. trembling at the

  1014. threatenings,

  1015. and embracing

  1016. the promises

  1017. of God for

  1018. this life and

  1019. for that which

  1020. is to come.

  1021. And what is that

  1022. saying to us?

  1023. It's saying when

  1024. we believe in

  1025. God, when we

  1026. trust in God,

  1027. when our faith

  1028. is the faith the

  1029. Bible calls upon

  1030. us to exercise,

  1031. then, in relation

  1032. to the different

  1033. aspects of God's

  1034. Word, that faith

  1035. acts.

  1036. So that when that

  1037. faith comes to

  1038. the commands of

  1039. God, it gives

  1040. obedience.

  1041. When that faith

  1042. comes to be

  1043. confronted with

  1044. the threatenings

  1045. of God, such

  1046. as in the

  1047. warnings of the

  1048. final judgment,

  1049. well, that faith

  1050. trembles at the

  1051. threatenings.

  1052. It's not a

  1053. trembling, as we'll

  1054. see with Noah,

  1055. it's not a

  1056. trembling in

  1057. anticipation of

  1058. not being saved.

  1059. It's the

  1060. trembling of

  1061. realizing that

  1062. this Word is

  1063. real and that

  1064. God is real.

  1065. And when it

  1066. comes to the

  1067. promises of

  1068. God for this

  1069. life and for

  1070. that which is

  1071. to come,

  1072. the faith of

  1073. God's people

  1074. reacts specifically

  1075. by embracing

  1076. these promises.

  1077. And you can

  1078. ask yourself,

  1079. as I need to

  1080. ask myself,

  1081. as you read

  1082. your Bible,

  1083. how do you

  1084. find your

  1085. mind, your

  1086. soul reacting

  1087. to the

  1088. different elements

  1089. of God's

  1090. truth?

  1091. What is your

  1092. response as you

  1093. come across the

  1094. commands of

  1095. God?

  1096. What is your

  1097. response as you

  1098. meet with the

  1099. threatenings of

  1100. God, with the

  1101. solemn announcements

  1102. of God's

  1103. coming judgment?

  1104. What does that

  1105. do for you in

  1106. your heart?

  1107. And when you

  1108. come across the

  1109. promises of

  1110. God, the

  1111. promises that

  1112. are addressed to

  1113. us in terms of

  1114. God's own

  1115. saving grace,

  1116. how much do we

  1117. value and

  1118. appreciate and

  1119. live by, and

  1120. as the

  1121. confession put it,

  1122. embrace these

  1123. promises?

  1124. He was

  1125. induced by

  1126. having a

  1127. warning from

  1128. God of

  1129. events as

  1130. yet unseen.

  1131. He moved

  1132. by faith,

  1133. believing what

  1134. God had said

  1135. to him,

  1136. trusting in

  1137. the Word of

  1138. God.

  1139. But then you

  1140. notice this,

  1141. in reverent

  1142. fear, he

  1143. constructed an

  1144. ark.

  1145. This is a very

  1146. detailed verse,

  1147. and all these

  1148. elements in this

  1149. verse are

  1150. important.

  1151. It's not just

  1152. saying that Noah

  1153. believed the

  1154. Word of God.

  1155. It's not just

  1156. saying that he

  1157. believed what

  1158. God was

  1159. threatening to

  1160. bring and

  1161. would bring.

  1162. It's not just

  1163. saying to us

  1164. that he did

  1165. this by faith.

  1166. He did this

  1167. by a faith

  1168. which included,

  1169. as we said,

  1170. from the

  1171. confession of

  1172. faith,

  1173. trembling at

  1174. the threatenings

  1175. of God.

  1176. It calls it

  1177. here reverent

  1178. fear.

  1179. Now you know

  1180. yourselves that

  1181. the Word of

  1182. God in many

  1183. places talks

  1184. about the

  1185. fear of God.

  1186. You go to

  1187. the book of

  1188. Proverbs and

  1189. throughout the

  1190. book of Psalms

  1191. especially, you

  1192. find the fear

  1193. of God very

  1194. often mentioned.

  1195. The fear of

  1196. God is

  1197. something that

  1198. takes place in

  1199. our hearts, in

  1200. our lives, in

  1201. our minds, and

  1202. it is to do

  1203. with how we

  1204. respond to

  1205. what God has

  1206. revealed of

  1207. Himself.

  1208. And the fear

  1209. of God is

  1210. not to do

  1211. with being

  1212. terrified.

  1213. It's not a

  1214. slavish fear.

  1215. It's not a

  1216. fear that

  1217. cringes in

  1218. response to

  1219. what God has

  1220. revealed.

  1221. It's rather

  1222. fear in the

  1223. sense of

  1224. love,

  1225. awe,

  1226. respect,

  1227. respect for

  1228. what God

  1229. has revealed

  1230. and who

  1231. God is.

  1232. And if we

  1233. are marked

  1234. by the fear

  1235. of God,

  1236. obviously that

  1237. will include

  1238. godliness in

  1239. our character

  1240. and behavior,

  1241. but it will

  1242. also mean that

  1243. everything God

  1244. has revealed,

  1245. we give utter

  1246. respect to.

  1247. We live in

  1248. awe of this

  1249. God and His

  1250. greatness.

  1251. we take on

  1252. board all

  1253. that the

  1254. Bible tells

  1255. us about

  1256. His

  1257. attributes,

  1258. whether we

  1259. think of

  1260. His power,

  1261. His grace,

  1262. His love,

  1263. His mercy,

  1264. His judgment,

  1265. His anger,

  1266. whatever else.

  1267. The fear of

  1268. God is what

  1269. takes these

  1270. seriously and

  1271. respects God

  1272. for who He

  1273. is.

  1274. And that fear

  1275. of God,

  1276. in the book

  1277. of Proverbs,

  1278. there are a

  1279. number of

  1280. verses that

  1281. tell us

  1282. the fear

  1283. of God

  1284. is the

  1285. beginning

  1286. of wisdom.

  1287. Beginning there

  1288. means the

  1289. foundational element

  1290. of wisdom.

  1291. Remember in

  1292. Psalm 90

  1293. where we

  1294. sang these

  1295. words of

  1296. the prayer

  1297. of Moses,

  1298. the man of

  1299. God,

  1300. teach us

  1301. to number

  1302. our days

  1303. so that

  1304. we may

  1305. apply our

  1306. hearts

  1307. to wisdom.

  1308. There is

  1309. Moses himself

  1310. thinking of

  1311. the awesomeness

  1312. of God,

  1313. the majesty,

  1314. the greatness

  1315. of God,

  1316. something which

  1317. our world has

  1318. so much forgotten

  1319. or doesn't

  1320. want to know

  1321. about.

  1322. But there is

  1323. Moses,

  1324. through this

  1325. great song,

  1326. teaching his

  1327. own people

  1328. and praying

  1329. to God

  1330. to help

  1331. them to

  1332. number their

  1333. days.

  1334. In other

  1335. words,

  1336. to take

  1337. account of

  1338. the brevity

  1339. of life

  1340. as against

  1341. the longevity

  1342. and eternalness

  1343. of God

  1344. himself.

  1345. And taking

  1346. account of

  1347. the brevity

  1348. of life,

  1349. Moses is saying,

  1350. is really

  1351. to turn

  1352. your heart

  1353. to wisdom,

  1354. to be

  1355. wise unto

  1356. salvation,

  1357. to treat

  1358. the things

  1359. that God

  1360. has revealed

  1361. of himself

  1362. with the

  1363. utmost seriousness.

  1364. And when he

  1365. talks about

  1366. the coming

  1367. judgment,

  1368. that has

  1369. to have

  1370. its own

  1371. place

  1372. in the

  1373. elements

  1374. that we

  1375. believe

  1376. and respond

  1377. to.

  1378. And of

  1379. course,

  1380. there is so

  1381. much gain

  1382. mentioned

  1383. in the

  1384. likes of

  1385. Psalms

  1386. and in

  1387. the book

  1388. of Proverbs

  1389. as these

  1390. two books

  1391. mention this

  1392. fear of

  1393. God so

  1394. often,

  1395. the fear

  1396. of God

  1397. and the

  1398. knowledge

  1399. of God

  1400. doesn't just

  1401. make a person

  1402. wise and

  1403. is foundational

  1404. to their

  1405. wisdom,

  1406. it brings

  1407. many other

  1408. benefits too,

  1409. of course,

  1410. because it's

  1411. attached to

  1412. God's blessing.

  1413. The fear

  1414. of God

  1415. is the

  1416. respect,

  1417. the awe

  1418. with which

  1419. we respond

  1420. to God

  1421. and God

  1422. himself has

  1423. promised

  1424. that those

  1425. who live

  1426. like that

  1427. will experience

  1428. many blessings

  1429. from his

  1430. hand.

  1431. And then

  1432. the final

  1433. thing is

  1434. in this

  1435. part of

  1436. the verse

  1437. being warned

  1438. by God

  1439. concerning

  1440. events as

  1441. yet unseen

  1442. in reverent

  1443. fear,

  1444. he constructed

  1445. an ark

  1446. for the

  1447. saving

  1448. of his

  1449. household.

  1450. Now,

  1451. that's an

  1452. important

  1453. detail

  1454. because it

  1455. leaves us

  1456. without any

  1457. excuse if we

  1458. haven't acted

  1459. upon what

  1460. God is

  1461. actually saying

  1462. to us

  1463. or has

  1464. been showing

  1465. us in

  1466. his word.

  1467. If we

  1468. haven't

  1469. actually

  1470. turned out

  1471. hearts to

  1472. wisdom because

  1473. all the way

  1474. through this

  1475. list of

  1476. people who

  1477. live by

  1478. faith,

  1479. you will

  1480. always find

  1481. something that

  1482. they did

  1483. by faith,

  1484. something that

  1485. their faith

  1486. led them

  1487. to do.

  1488. The action

  1489. of faith

  1490. was to

  1491. actually bring

  1492. them to

  1493. do something

  1494. in relation

  1495. to what

  1496. God himself

  1497. required.

  1498. And as

  1499. far as

  1500. Noah was

  1501. concerned,

  1502. in the

  1503. case of

  1504. Noah,

  1505. he constructed

  1506. an ark.

  1507. In other

  1508. words,

  1509. faith is

  1510. always tied

  1511. and attached

  1512. to something

  1513. practical in

  1514. the Christian

  1515. life.

  1516. Faith is

  1517. itself a

  1518. believing and

  1519. a trusting in

  1520. God, but it

  1521. is never

  1522. detached from

  1523. the works that

  1524. God requires

  1525. of his people.

  1526. You find that

  1527. in James,

  1528. James chapter

    James 2 chapter mention

  1529. 2 especially,

  1530. where you find

  1531. an emphasis on

  1532. faith attached

  1533. to certain

  1534. works that show

  1535. and demonstrate

  1536. faith itself

  1537. to be real

  1538. and that show

  1539. the people

  1540. of faith

  1541. to be the

  1542. kind of

  1543. people that

  1544. God himself

  1545. has brought

  1546. to know

  1547. himself.

  1548. So here is

  1549. he built

  1550. an ark,

  1551. he constructed

  1552. an ark.

  1553. Faith

  1554. always has

  1555. attendant

  1556. action or

  1557. consequent

  1558. action

  1559. wherever that

  1560. faith is.

  1561. And that's

  1562. true of every

  1563. Christian here.

  1564. Everybody here

  1565. tonight who

  1566. trusts in

  1567. God, that

  1568. faith by

  1569. which you

  1570. relate to

  1571. God and

  1572. which you

  1573. are united

  1574. to God,

  1575. that faith

  1576. in some way

  1577. or other is

  1578. put into

  1579. action in

  1580. your life.

  1581. None of us

  1582. is perfect.

  1583. There are

  1584. many things

  1585. we leave

  1586. undone that

  1587. we should

  1588. have done,

  1589. many things

  1590. we do

  1591. that we

  1592. shouldn't

  1593. have done.

  1594. We pray

  1595. God's

  1596. forgiveness

  1597. in regard

  1598. to the

  1599. imperfections

  1600. of our

  1601. lives.

  1602. And

  1603. nevertheless,

  1604. we acknowledge

  1605. the fact

  1606. and we

  1607. want to

  1608. follow through

  1609. on this,

  1610. that faith

  1611. is always

  1612. attached to

  1613. works.

  1614. There will

  1615. be something

  1616. practical in

  1617. your life

  1618. that you

  1619. do on a

  1620. regular basis

  1621. that shows

  1622. you're a

  1623. Christian,

  1624. even coming

  1625. to church,

  1626. being with

  1627. the Lord's

  1628. people in

  1629. worship,

  1630. reaching out

  1631. to people

  1632. in their

  1633. need,

  1634. praying for

  1635. people even

  1636. if they don't

  1637. see you

  1638. doing it.

  1639. But these

  1640. are the

  1641. actings of

  1642. faith,

  1643. the actings

  1644. by which

  1645. faith shows

  1646. itself to

  1647. be from

  1648. God and

  1649. attached to

  1650. the benefits

  1651. that God

  1652. brings to

  1653. you in

  1654. your life.

  1655. You remember

  1656. the account

  1657. we have in

  1658. Luke chapter

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  1659. 15 of

  1660. the son,

  1661. the son

  1662. that's usually

  1663. called the

  1664. prodigal

  1665. son.

  1666. You remember

  1667. how the

  1668. detail of it

  1669. includes that

  1670. he left

  1671. home,

  1672. he wanted

  1673. everything that

  1674. was going to

  1675. fall to him

  1676. after his

  1677. father's death,

  1678. couldn't wait

  1679. for that,

  1680. so he wanted

  1681. that straight

  1682. away and he

  1683. took it all,

  1684. the father gave

  1685. it to him,

  1686. off he went

  1687. with it.

  1688. And of course

  1689. you know the

  1690. account you have

  1691. there very well,

  1692. he began then to

  1693. squander all that

  1694. he had taken from

  1695. home and then it

  1696. all too soon ran

  1697. out.

  1698. And so he joined

  1699. himself to a

  1700. citizen of that

  1701. far country and

  1702. he had the most

  1703. menial task of

  1704. looking after pigs,

  1705. feeding them,

  1706. he didn't have

  1707. anything by way

  1708. of sustenance,

  1709. so sometimes he was

  1710. forced to eat the

  1711. same food that pigs

  1712. were eating.

  1713. One day he was

  1714. there in his

  1715. abject poverty

  1716. and he said,

  1717. how many servants

  1718. of my father

  1719. have bread enough

  1720. and to spare

  1721. and here I am

  1722. perishing with

  1723. hunger.

  1724. I will arise,

  1725. I'll get up from

  1726. this place and I'll

  1727. go back to my

  1728. father.

  1729. But then you see,

  1730. you read,

  1731. and he arose

  1732. and he came to

  1733. his father.

  1734. It wasn't just

  1735. something that

  1736. happened in his

  1737. mind.

  1738. It wasn't just a

  1739. resolution on its

  1740. own that he never

  1741. acted out.

  1742. It wasn't something

1743. that he came by way

  1744. of a conviction of

  1745. something he ought

  1746. to do.

  1747. It was something he

  1748. thought upon doing

  1749. and then immediately

  1750. he said about doing

  1751. it.

  1752. And that's the same

1753. as God is saying to

  1754. you and to me

  1755. tonight.

  1756. Don't just think

  1757. about being a

  1758. Christian.

  1759. Don't just think

  1760. about being saved.

  1761. Don't just desire it

  1762. for yourself.

  1763. Good all the desire

  1764. is if you're not

  1765. here saved tonight,

  1766. if you're not in

  1767. Christ, if you haven't

  1768. yet accepted the

  1769. Savior as your

  1770. Savior, don't just

  1771. leave it at thinking

  1772. about it.

  1773. Because this passage

  1774. is saying to us,

  1775. this verse is saying

  1776. to us, that actually

  1777. Noah by faith

  1778. constructed an ark.

  1779. Have you constructed

  1780. your ark?

  1781. Have you taken all

  1782. the thoughts,

  1783. all the concerns,

  1784. that the Bible

  1785. has itself placed

  1786. in your heart,

  1787. all the desires

  1788. that you have there,

  1789. the kind of life

  1790. that God requires

  1791. of you?

  1792. Have you taken all

  1793. of that, believing

  1794. that this is God

  1795. speaking to you

  1796. through his word,

  1797. and actually taken

  1798. that and put it

  1799. into practice?

  1800. Have you accepted

  1801. Christ?

  1802. Have you received

  1803. the Christ that's

  1804. offered in the

  1805. gospel?

  1806. Have you closed

  1807. in with Jesus

1808. as he offers to you

  1809. the safety in advance

  1810. of this coming

  1811. disaster of the

  1812. judgment?

  1813. These are the

  1814. questions, you see,

  1815. that come practically

1816. to mind as I put

  1817. this to myself

  1818. and in preaching

1819. it as I put it

  1820. to you.

  1821. Because that's

  1822. really the kind

  1823. of thing that we

  1824. ought to be thinking

  1825. even now.

  1826. Where am I in

  1827. relation to this?

  1828. What have I done

  1829. with the advantage

  1830. that I've got

  1831. in the gospel?

  1832. How long will God

1833. have to wait for me

  1834. to respond positively

  1835. and believingly

  1836. and thankfully

  1837. and gratefully

  1838. for the Savior

  1839. that's offered to me

  1840. in the gospel?

  1841. You heard the

  1842. warning sign

  1843. many times.

  1844. It's still blaring

  1845. out in our ears.

  1846. Every time we come

  1847. to the Bible,

  1848. every time we come

  1849. to the gospel,

  1850. God has lovingly

  1851. and patiently

  1852. set this for us

  1853. in our lives

  1854. so that we could

  1855. hear this warning

  1856. and respond in time.

  1857. Will this be the

  1858. last time you

  1859. heard the warning?

  1860. Don't persuade

  1861. yourself that

  1862. because you heard

  1863. it many times

  1864. that you'll hear

  1865. it again tomorrow.

  1866. And many people

  1867. in this world

  1868. today will not

  1869. be in this world

  1870. tomorrow.

  1871. They may not even

  1872. be in this world

  1873. tonight

  1874. because their

  1875. life will end

  1876. and they will

  1877. enter eternity

  1878. and they will

  1879. need to face

  1880. God and give

  1881. an account to

  1882. God of what

  1883. they have done

  1884. with his life.

  1885. Don't waste it.

  1886. Don't delay

  1887. over these matters.

  1888. Be serious

  1889. about your

  1890. relationship

  1891. with God.

  1892. And just like

  1893. Noah,

  1894. when you hear

  1895. the tsunami

  1896. warning sign,

  1897. the alarm

  1898. has gone off

  1899. as you're

  1900. hearing it

  1901. again tonight.

  1902. In reverent

  1903. fear,

  1904. taking it

  1905. seriously,

  1906. close in

  1907. with Christ,

  1908. receive the

  1909. Savior,

  1910. as he's

  1911. offered in

  1912. the gospel

  1913. before,

  1914. for you or

  1915. for me,

  1916. it'll be too

  1917. late.

  1918. So that's

  1919. what induced

  1920. Noah to

  1921. build the ark.

  1922. And more

  1923. briefly,

  1924. what was the

  1925. outcome of

  1926. his building

  1927. the ark?

  1928. Well,

  1929. we're told,

  1930. by this he

  1931. condemned the

  1932. world and

  1933. became an heir

  1934. of the

  1935. righteousness

  1936. that comes

  1937. by faith.

  1938. The two

  1939. things are

  1940. related there.

  1941. He condemned

  1942. the world

  1943. and he first

  1944. of all goes

  1945. to the saving

  1946. of his

  1947. household and

  1948. then by it

  1949. he also

  1950. condemned the

  1951. world.

  1952. Well,

  1953. faith,

  1954. our faith

  1955. in Christ

  1956. always brings

  1957. salvation into

  1958. our possession.

  1959. Not because

  1960. God rewards

  1961. us for our

  1962. faith,

  1963. but because

  1964. this is God's

  1965. method.

  1966. He invites us

  1967. to come to

  1968. Christ,

  1969. invites us

  1970. to put our

  1971. trust in him,

  1972. invites us

  1973. to receive

  1974. that salvation

  1975. that's in

  1976. him and the

  1977. promise is

  1978. that we

  1979. will be

  1980. saved.

  1981. Believe in

  1982. the Lord

  1983. Jesus Christ.

  1984. The jailer

  1985. was told by

  1986. Paul,

  1987. and you

  1988. will be

  1989. saved.

  1990. Not you

  1991. will be

  1992. saved eventually,

  1993. not you

  1994. will be

  1995. saved after

  1996. you've done

  1997. some things

  1998. to actually

  1999. earn some

  2000. more respect

  2001. from God,

  2002. something like

  2003. that.

  2004. What he's

  2005. saying is

  2006. believe in

  2007. the Lord

  2008. Jesus Christ

  2009. and you

  2010. will be

  2011. saved.

  2012. You'll be

  2013. saved as a

  2014. consequence of

  2015. that.

  2016. Even though you

  2017. haven't deserved

  2018. it,

  2019. what haven't

  2020. earned it,

  2021. this is

  2022. God's way,

  2023. God's grace.

  2024. But you

  2025. see he also

  2026. condemned the

  2027. world.

  2028. Now how could

  2029. Noah condemn

  2030. the world?

  2031. This is what

  2032. he's saying,

  2033. by this he

  2034. condemned the

  2035. world and

  2036. became an

  2037. heir of the

  2038. righteousness

  2039. that comes

  2040. by faith.

  2041. Well in

  2042. what sense

  2043. would Noah

  2044. have condemned

  2045. the world?

  2046. Well in

  2047. this sense I

  2048. think that

  2049. when the

  2050. day happened,

  2051. when the

  2052. event actually

  2053. came about,

  2054. he condemned

  2055. the world

  2056. in the sense

  2057. that he

  2058. was proved

  2059. right.

  2060. He condemned

  2061. the world for

  2062. not having

  2063. received the

  2064. message that

  2065. he preached,

  2066. for not having

  2067. listened to the

  2068. voice of God

  2069. through him.

  2070. The world

  2071. stood condemned

  2072. in relation

  2073. to Noah

  2074. and his

  2075. preaching,

  2076. Noah and

  2077. his advice

  2078. to them.

  2079. He condemned

  2080. the world in

  2081. that sense.

  2082. the world

  2083. didn't listen

  2084. and so the

  2085. world perished.

  2086. And that's

  2087. how it will

  2088. be at the

  2089. end of the

  2090. world for us

  2091. as well.

  2092. There will

  2093. be many

  2094. people as

  2095. they leave

  2096. this world

  2097. and enter

  2098. eternity

  2099. that will

  2100. be condemned

  2101. by the

  2102. faith,

  2103. the preaching,

  2104. the witness

  2105. of God's

  2106. people that

  2107. implored them

  2108. to put their

  2109. trust in

  2110. Christ.

  2111. And that's

  2112. exactly how it

  2113. was for the

  2114. day of Noah.

  2115. Remember how

  2116. Jesus himself

  2117. spoke about

  2118. something similar

  2119. to that in

  2120. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 12:41

  2121. 12,

  2122. verse 41,

  2123. where he

  2124. talks there

  2125. about the

  2126. different signs

  2127. that have

  2128. come,

  2129. an evil and

  2130. adulterous

  2131. generation,

  2132. Pharisees,

  2133. saying,

  2134. teacher,

  2135. we wish to

  2136. see a sign

  2137. from you.

  2138. This was

  2139. their way of

  2140. getting him

  2141. as they saw

  2142. to prove

  2143. who he was

  2144. and who he

  2145. claimed to

  2146. be.

  2147. He says,

  2148. an evil and

  2149. adulterous

  2150. generation seeks

  2151. for a sign,

  2152. but no sign

  2153. will be given

  2154. to it except

  2155. the sign of

  2156. the prophet

  2157. Jonah.

  2158. And he

  2159. speaks then

  2160. about Jonah

  2161. being three

  2162. days and three

  2163. nights in the

  2164. belly of the

  2165. fish.

  2166. The men of

  2167. Nineveh will

  2168. rise up at

  2169. the judgment

  2170. with this

  2171. generation and

  2172. condemn it

  2173. because they

  2174. repented at

  2175. the preaching

  2176. of Jonah and

  2177. behold,

  2178. something greater

  2179. than Jonah is

  2180. here.

  2181. The queen of

  2182. the south will

  2183. rise up at

  2184. the judgment

  2185. with this

  2186. generation and

  2187. condemn it for

  2188. she came from

  2189. the ends of

  2190. the earth to

  2191. hear the

  2192. wisdom of

  2193. Solomon and

  2194. behold,

  2195. something greater

  2196. than Solomon

  2197. is here.

  2198. In other

  2199. words,

  2200. wherever we

  2201. have the

  2202. gospel made

  2203. known to

  2204. us and

  2205. making known

  2206. to us the

  2207. day of

  2208. opportunity and

  2209. the salvation

  2210. that's in

  2211. Christ,

  2212. when we

  2213. dismiss that,

  2214. when we

  2215. don't,

  2216. even if we

  2217. don't dismiss

  2218. it,

  2219. when we

  2220. don't respond

  2221. to it to

  2222. the extent we

  2223. should by

  2224. receiving this

  2225. Christ,

  2226. then the day

  2227. of judgment

  2228. will be a

  2229. day of

  2230. aggravated guilt

  2231. for us.

  2232. There's no way

  2233. I can describe

  2234. what that's going

  2235. to be like.

  2236. I don't really

  2237. need to.

  2238. The Bible

  2239. itself leaves

  2240. the matter

  2241. on our

  2242. conscience

  2243. today,

  2244. because this

  2245. is what it

  2246. says,

  2247. he condemned

  2248. the world,

  2249. and he

  2250. became an

  2251. heir of

  2252. the righteousness

  2253. that comes

  2254. by faith.

  2255. In other

  2256. words,

  2257. he inherited

  2258. this righteousness.

  2259. Now,

  2260. righteousness,

  2261. as you know,

  2262. is the

  2263. standard that

  2264. God requires

  2265. of a human

  2266. life.

  2267. The righteousness

  2268. that God

  2269. requires of

  2270. us,

  2271. we cannot

  2272. ourselves

  2273. create and

  2274. produce because

  2275. of our

  2276. sinfulness,

  2277. but it's that

  2278. righteousness that

  2279. God has brought

  2280. to us in

  2281. Jesus.

  2282. And through

  2283. him,

  2284. through his

  2285. death and

  2286. resurrection

  2287. especially,

  2288. that righteousness

  2289. is pronounced

  2290. in the gospel

  2291. as offered

  2292. to us by

  2293. God.

  2294. God.

  2295. And so,

  2296. when we come

  2297. to trust in

  2298. the Lord,

  2299. that righteousness

  2300. is imputed

  2301. to us.

  2302. God puts it

  2303. on our

  2304. record.

  2305. And there's

  2306. a marvelous

  2307. thing,

  2308. that God

  2309. puts on our

  2310. record,

  2311. instead of

  2312. the list of

  2313. our sins

  2314. and condemnation

  2315. at the

  2316. bottom,

  2317. he puts on

  2318. his record

  2319. of us

  2320. the

  2321. righteousness

  2322. of Christ.

  2323. And at

  2324. the bottom

  2325. of that

  2326. is his

  2327. great approval

  2328. of us

  2329. in Christ.

  2330. What a

  2331. great transfer,

  2332. free transfer

  2333. that is.

  2334. It only

  2335. requires

  2336. that you

  2337. believe and

  2338. trust in

  2339. the living

  2340. God.

  2341. That is

  2342. God's

  2343. standard.

  2344. You remember

  2345. we saw

  2346. Paul's,

  2347. not so long

  2348. ago,

  2349. going through

  2350. the letter

  2351. to the

  2352. Philippians,

  2353. you remember

  2354. how we saw

  2355. Paul describing

  2356. his experience

  2357. in chapter

  2358. three,

  2359. really giving

  2360. his testimony

  2361. in effect,

  2362. where he

  2363. says,

  2364. I count

  2365. everything as

  2366. loss,

  2367. because of

  2368. the surpassing

  2369. worth of

  2370. knowing Jesus

  2371. Christ my

  2372. Lord.

  2373. For his

  2374. sake I have

  2375. suffered the

  2376. loss of all

  2377. things,

  2378. and count

  2379. them as

  2380. rubbish,

  2381. in order

  2382. that I

  2383. may gain

  2384. Christ and

  2385. be found

  2386. in him,

  2387. not having

  2388. a righteousness

  2389. of my

  2390. own that

  2391. comes from

  2392. the law,

  2393. but that

  2394. which comes

  2395. through faith

  2396. in Christ.

  2397. The

  2398. righteousness

  2399. becomes

  2400. mine,

  2401. actually

  2402. properly

  2403. and fully

  2404. mine and

  2405. yours,

  2406. by faith

  2407. in Christ

  2408. when we

  2409. place our

  2410. trust in

  2411. him.

  2412. And that's

  2413. really what

  2414. we're told

  2415. here about

  2416. Noah as

  2417. well.

  2418. He became

  2419. an heir of

  2420. the righteousness

  2421. that comes

  2422. by faith.

  2423. God didn't

  2424. say,

  2425. I now find

  2426. you righteous

  2427. because you've

  2428. done this

  2429. great thing

  2430. in building

  2431. this ark

  2432. as I

  2433. have

  2434. commanded

  2435. you.

  2436. That's

  2437. not what

  2438. gave Noah

  2439. righteousness

  2440. at all.

  2441. Righteousness

  2442. was something

  2443. as God's

  2444. gift to

  2445. him,

  2446. and it

  2447. was through

  2448. the faith

  2449. that he

  2450. exercised,

  2451. that he

  2452. became an

  2453. heir of

  2454. the righteousness

  2455. that comes

  2456. by faith.

  2457. This

  2458. righteousness

  2459. is your

  2460. righteousness

  2461. when Jesus

  2462. is your

  2463. Savior.

  2464. So,

  2465. here tonight

  2466. we have

  2467. very much

  2468. before us

  2469. the opportunity

  2470. that God

  2471. is setting

  2472. out for

  2473. us in

  2474. the gospel

  2475. in Christ.

  2476. Remember

  2477. how Jesus,

  2478. how John

  2479. himself put

  2480. it in

  2481. regard to

  2482. Jesus.

  2483. We'll finish

  2484. with this

  2485. in the

  2486. gospel of

  2487. John.

  2488. It really

  2489. sums up

  2490. what we've

  2491. been looking

  2492. at this

  2493. evening,

  2494. chapter 1

  2495. verses

  2496. 11 to

  2497. 12.

  2498. It says

  2499. about Jesus,

  2500. he was in

  2501. the world

  2502. and the world

  2503. was made

  2504. through him,

  2505. yet the world

  2506. did not

  2507. know him.

  2508. He came

  2509. to his

  2510. own,

  2511. and his

  2512. own people

  2513. did not

  2514. receive him,

  2515. but to

  2516. all who

  2517. did receive

  2518. him,

  2519. who believed

  2520. in his

  2521. name,

  2522. he gave

  2523. the right

  2524. to become

  2525. children of

  2526. God,

  2527. who were

  2528. born not

  2529. of blood,

  2530. nor of the

  2531. will of the

  2532. flesh,

  2533. not of the

  2534. will of man,

  2535. but of

  2536. God.

  2537. So,

  2538. tonight,

  2539. let me ask

  2540. myself,

  2541. and you

  2542. must ask

  2543. yourself,

  2544. do I

  2545. really believe

  2546. in the

  2547. day of

  2548. judgment?

  2549. And if I

  2550. really believe

  2551. in the

  2552. day of

  2553. judgment,

  2554. what am I

  2555. doing in

  2556. advance of

  2557. it?

  2558. Am I

  2559. like Noah

  2560. responding to

  2561. the advance

  2562. warning that

  2563. God has

  2564. given me,

  2565. or have I

  2566. still left

  2567. that to

  2568. the side?

  2569. Remember,

  2570. you can't

  2571. afford to

  2572. do that.

  2573. God is

  2574. lovingly

  2575. providing us

  2576. with the

  2577. information.

  2578. He's not

  2579. treating us

  2580. roughly.

  2581. It's not

  2582. something in

  2583. which we

  2584. find God,

  2585. and I hope

  2586. not the

  2587. preaching of

  2588. the gospel

  2589. also.

  2590. It's not

  2591. something that

  2592. we want to

  2593. have set

  2594. before you

  2595. in any

  2596. bad spirit,

  2597. but lovingly

  2598. and tactfully,

  2599. as God

  2600. himself

  2601. mercifully

  2602. is making

  2603. his appeal

  2604. through the

  2605. gospel,

  2606. for us to

  2607. place our

  2608. trust in

  2609. Jesus Christ,

  2610. the Savior.

  2611. May God
