  1. We're going to begin our worship this evening by singing to God's praise in Psalm 27 in the

  2. Sing Psalms. We're singing verse 1 to verse 5. The Lord's my Savior and my light, who will make me

  3. dismayed. The Lord's the stronghold of my life. Why should I be afraid? When evildoers threaten

  4. me to take my life away, my adversaries and my foes, they will stumble in that day. We're going

  5. to sing from verse 1 to 5. The tune is St. Columba, and we'll stand to sing.

  6. St. Columba, and we'll make me dismayed. When evildoers threaten me to take my life away,

  7. my adversaries and my foes, they will stumble in that day. Although an army hands me in,

  8. my heart will feel no dread. Though war against me should arise, I will lift up my head.

  9. one thing that I need before the Lord, and this I'll see always, that I may come within

  10. in the cross-house and dwell in cross-house and dwell there all my days.

  11. and in the cross-house and dwell there all my days.

  12. on the beauty of the Lord, I constantly believe in his, and in his mouth may seem to know

  13. the direction in the cross-house and dwell there all my days.

  14. the beauty of the Lord, and in his way.

  15. the beauty of the Lord, I constantly believe in his, and in his mouth may seem to know

  16. the direction in his ways.

  17. the beauty of the Lord, and in his dwelling is, and in his dwelling is, and in his ways.

  18. the meaning is, and in his ways.

  19. the beauty of the Lord, and in his dwelling is, and in his ways.

  20. May seem to know

  21. Direction in His ways

  22. For in His dwelling

  23. He will be

  24. Be safe in trouble

  25. Will face

  26. Within His tent

  27. He'll shelter me

  28. And on and on

  29. Be raised

  30. Let's unite her

  31. Hearts in prayer

  32. Let us pray

  33. Lord our God

  34. Our Father in Heaven

  35. The privilege is ours

  36. To come and draw near

  37. To You in worship

  38. The joy is ours

  39. To know that You are a God

  40. Who delights

  41. In Your people coming

  42. And to draw near to You

  43. And to offer up

  44. Praise from the very bottom

  45. Of our hearts

  46. Rejoicing in the fact

  47. That You alone

  48. Are our salvation

  49. That in You alone

  50. There is salvation

  51. For all who will come

  52. And put their trust

  53. In the Lord Jesus Christ

  54. And we thank You

  55. That the Gospel

  56. Is an open invitation

  57. That there are no restrictions

  58. Put on it

  59. But that there is a free offer

  60. Through the Gospel

  61. We thank You

  62. That the Word

  63. Became flesh

  64. And dwelt among us

  65. And we thank You

  66. That the beauty of Christ

  67. Has been seen

  68. And indeed is seen

  69. In this world

  70. That there were many

  71. Who gazed upon the Lord

  72. Who saw His works

  73. Who saw His miracles

  74. Who spoke of them

  75. Who marveled at them

  76. That we thank You

  77. That the greatest one

  78. Of all

  79. That was those

  80. Who could say

  81. He is not here

  82. For He is risen

  83. We thank You

  84. That there is such great hope

  85. In those words

  86. That though there were many

  87. Who looked on

  88. As our Lord

  89. Was led to the cross

  90. And as He was crucified

  91. And as He gave His life up

  92. That there was much sorrow

  93. In that time

  94. As there was darkness

  95. Over all the earth

  96. We thank You

  97. For the resurrection morning

  98. We thank You

  99. For the power

  100. He has

  101. Over conquering death

  102. And that in Jesus Christ

  103. Now

  104. We know the beauty

  105. Of salvation

  106. We know the delight

  107. To be able

  108. To come near to Him

  109. And we pray

  110. That even this evening

  111. We will have that

  112. Great longing

  113. Of the psalmist

  114. That one thing

  115. We'll plead

  116. Before the Lord

  117. That we will seek it always

  118. That we may come in

  119. Within God's house

  120. And dwell there

  121. All our days

  122. That we would see

  123. The beauty

  124. Of the Lord

  125. And gaze constantly

  126. Upon Him

  127. We thank You

  128. That that is not just seen

  129. Here in this place

  130. But even as we leave here

  131. This evening

  132. Help us to fix our eyes

  133. On our Lord

  134. And Saviour

  135. Jesus Christ

  136. The one who heals

  137. Our sin sick hearts

  138. The one who

  139. If we come in repentance

  140. And confessing

  141. Our sins anew

  142. He is able to cleanse us

  143. From all our sin

  144. So we acknowledge

  145. Lord before You

  146. And You this evening

  147. Our shortcomings

  148. How we are a people

  149. Who falls short

  150. Of Your glory

  151. In so many ways

  152. You know the wickedness

  153. And the deceit

  154. Of our hearts

  155. As the word says

  156. The heart is wicked

  157. Beyond all things

  158. And we know Lord

  159. In our own experience

  160. In our day to day lives

  161. How easy it is

  162. For us to sin

  163. How often we say

  164. The wrong thing

  165. How often we do

  166. The wrong thing

  167. How often the wrong thoughts

  168. Come into our minds

  169. How often our inaction

  170. Is sin as well

  171. But we thank You

  172. That there is yet

  173. Forgiveness with You

  174. And so we come as sinners

  175. Before a holy God

  176. This evening

  177. Pleading with You Lord

  178. Have mercy upon us

  179. And direct us

  180. Towards You

  181. Lead us in our worship

  182. Lift up our hearts

  183. And our souls

  184. To You this evening

  185. So whatever our circumstances

  186. Whatever our situation

  187. We may find that great joy

  188. Of salvation

  189. Restored to our hearts

  190. We thank You

  191. That You are the one

  192. Who is able

  193. That we come before You

  194. With powerless hands

  195. And lips

  196. We thank You

  197. For the power of Your Spirit

  198. We thank You

  199. For the power You have

  200. To work in and through us

  201. And so we plead

  202. Lord Your presence with us

  203. That You will draw near to us

  204. As we draw near to You

  205. Bless all our homes

  206. And families

  207. As we unite our hearts

  208. Together here

  209. Bless the homes

  210. We reach into

  211. Through the online services

  212. As well

  213. And all who are

  214. Unable to be with us

  215. For such a variety

  216. Of reasons

  217. We thank You

  218. That we have the means

  219. To

  220. For the gospel

  221. To go out

  222. We pray that You will bless it

  223. To all ends of the earth

  224. Not just the gospel

  225. Preached here today

  226. But throughout

  227. Our denomination

  228. Throughout our churches

  229. Throughout all the churches

  230. Of the world today

  231. Wherever Your people

  232. Have gathered

  233. As Your church

  234. That wherever Your name

  235. Has been praised

  236. That there will be much glory

  237. Given to You

  238. We pray for the work

  239. Of salvation

  240. To be seen and known

  241. Far and wide

  242. But we thank You

  243. That Your gospel

  244. Is not confined

  245. In any way

  246. Not limited in any way

  247. And even as we see

  248. In our reading this evening

  249. That Your word

  250. Is powerful

  251. To convict

  252. And to convert

  253. And so we pray

  254. For that power

  255. To be with us

  256. As we hear Your word

  257. And as we come

  258. To study it together here

  259. We know Lord

  260. That You know

  261. Our very hearts

  262. And our innermost thoughts

  263. And we thank You

  264. That as we come

  265. In prayer

  266. We come rejoicing

  267. In the hope

  268. That You are the one

  269. Who is able to answer

  270. Above and beyond

  271. All that we ask

  272. Or imagine

  273. We thank You

  274. That as we ask

  275. For comfort

  276. In our prayers

  277. That You are able

  278. To comfort

  279. Beyond the comfort

  280. We even imagine

  281. That we cannot enter

  282. Into the experiences

  283. Of Your people

  284. At times

  285. In the hurt they feel

  286. In the anxieties

  287. They have

  288. In those who are

  289. Downcast in their hearts

  290. Sorrowful in their souls

  291. But we thank You

  292. That You are the one

  293. Who is able to uplift

  294. That You are the one

  295. Who is able to encourage

  296. And so we pray

  297. For all

  298. Who we know

  299. And love

  300. And care for

  301. Who are going

  302. Through difficult times

  303. Times of sorrow

  304. Times of illness

  305. Times of grief

  306. We do pray Lord

  307. For Your hand

  308. To be upon them

  309. For good

  310. That they would know

  311. That You are the one

  312. Who is faithful

  313. And always ever present

  314. That You are the one

  315. Who is near

  316. We pray Lord

  317. For our communities

  318. At this time

  319. We know that there's

  320. Been so much activity

  321. Around the town

  322. These past days

  323. We do thank You

  324. For many people

  325. We've met

  326. And spoken to

  327. We do pray Lord

  328. That even from

  329. This morning's

  330. Breakfast

  331. That there will be

  332. Many seeds

  333. That have been

  334. Sown there

  335. That will be

  336. Blessed by You

  337. Thank You

  338. For every engagement

  339. That was made

  340. With people in the hall

  341. Thank You

  342. For those who came

  343. Into the worship service

  344. And maybe even here

  345. This evening too

  346. Those who are visiting

  347. With us

  348. We pray Your blessing

  349. On each and every one

  350. And we do thank You Lord

  351. That You are a God

  352. Who is able to unite us

  353. As a people

  354. Through praise

  355. And worship

  356. We thank You

  357. For the families

  358. Who are present

  359. This morning

  360. For the baptisms

  361. We thank You

  362. For the children

  363. Who are baptized

  364. We continue to pray

  365. Your blessing on them

  366. We thank You

  367. For that great covenant

  368. Promise that there is

  369. And we pray

  370. That You will draw

  371. These children

  372. And all our children

  373. To know the covenant

  374. Promise of Christ

  375. Fulfilled in Him

  376. That they through faith

  377. Might come to confess Him

  378. As their Lord and Saviour

  379. Look after all our young people

  380. During these holiday times

  381. Remember especially those

  382. Who are at camps just now

  383. We continue to pray

  384. For the camps

  385. That continue to meet

  386. In this week

  387. And the week ahead

  388. The weeks ahead

  389. We ask Your safety

  390. And Your protection

  391. And Your blessing

  392. Over each and every one

  393. Of the leaders

  394. And all the activities

  395. They are involved in

  396. And the children

  397. Lord may they hear

  398. The gospel good news

  399. And may they be blessed

  400. By it

  401. We do pray for

  402. The ongoing work

  403. Of the church

  404. Throughout our nation

  405. And the nations of the world

  406. How we need Your light

  407. To go forth

  408. And with power

  409. Into our

  410. Into every nation

  411. Of the world

  412. To bless our leaders

  413. To bless those

  414. Who rule over us

  415. To bless those

  416. Who have such

  417. Desires for evil

  418. In this world

  419. When we think of war

  420. And terrorist activities

  421. And greed

  422. And all of the things

  423. That direct our hearts

  424. So often

  425. We pray for You

  426. To melt the hardest

  427. Of hearts

  428. To bring grace

  429. And to bring mercy

  430. And to bring repentance

  431. And to bring glory

  432. To Your name

  433. So we continue to pray

  434. For the needs of our world

  435. For Your protection

  436. Over us as a people

  437. For Your blessing

  438. To be upon us

  439. For Your reviving power

  440. Of Your spirit

  441. To be with us

  442. Even in this time together

  443. May You continue

  444. To bless us this day

  445. And look after us

  446. And go before us

  447. In the days ahead

  448. Direct our steps

  449. And our paths

  450. Encourage our hearts

  451. And give us lips

  452. That will always sing

  453. Your praise

  454. And witness for You

  455. So Lord continue

  456. With us now

  457. In our praise

  458. As we continue

  459. To worship You

  460. Forgive us all our sins

  461. And all we ask

  462. We ask the forgiveness

  463. Of all our sin

  464. In Jesus name

  465. Amen

  466. We'll again sing

  467. To God's praise

  468. In Psalm 125

  469. In the Scottish Psalter

  470. You'll find this

  471. On page 429

  472. Psalm 125

  473. Psalm 125

  474. Page 419

  475. We'll sing the whole

  476. Of this Psalm together

  477. Then the Lord

  478. That firmly trust

  479. Shall be like Sion Hill

  480. Which at no time

  481. Can be removed

  482. But standeth ever still

  483. We'll sing

  484. The whole of this Psalm

  485. The tune is St. Andrew

  486. And we'll stand

  487. To sing

  488. From the Church

  489. Amen.

  490. Amen.

  491. Amen.

  492. Amen.

  493. Amen.

  494. Amen.

  495. Okay.

  496. We turn together to read in God's Word, a reading in the Old Testament and in the book of 2 Kings.

  497. 2 Kings chapter 5.

    2 Kings 5 chapter mention

  498. We're reading from the beginning of the chapter down to the middle of verse 19.

  499. 2 Kings chapter 5, reading from the beginning of that chapter.

    2 Kings 5 chapter mention

  500. 1 Kings chapter 5, reading from the beginning of that chapter.

    1 Kings 5 chapter mention

  501. 1 Kings chapter 5, reading from the beginning of that chapter.

    1 Kings 5 chapter mention

  502. 1 Kings chapter 5, reading from the beginning of that chapter.

    1 Kings 5 chapter mention

  503. he is seeking a quarrel with me. But when Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king of Israel had

  504. torn his clothes, he sent to the king, saying, Why have you torn your clothes? Let him come now to me,

  505. that he may know that there is a prophet in Israel. So Naaman came with his horses and chariots

  506. and stood at the door of Elisha's house. And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying,

  507. Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored, and you shall be clean.

  508. But Naaman was angry and went away, saying, Behold, I thought that he would surely come out to me and

  509. stand and call upon the name of the Lord his God, and wave his hand over the place and cure the leper.

  510. Are not Aban and Farpar, the rivers of Damascus, Beth and all the waters of Israel?

  511. Could I not wash in them and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage. But their servants came

  512. near and said to him, My father, it is a great word the prophet has spoken to you. Will you not do it?

  513. As he actually said to you, Wash and be clean. So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the

  514. Jordan according to the word of the man of God. And his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little

  515. child, and he was clean. Then he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and he came

  516. and stood before him. And he said, Behold, I know there is no God in all the earth but in Israel,

  517. so accept now a present from your servant. But he said, As the Lord lives before whom I stand,

  518. I will receive none. And he urged him to take it, but he refused. Then Naaman said, If not, please,

  519. let it be given to your servant two mule loads of earth. For from now on, on your servant,

  520. on your servant will not offer burnt offering or sacrifice to any God but the Lord. In this matter,

  521. may the Lord pardon your servant. When my master goes into the house of Rimon to worship there,

  522. leaning on my arm, and I bow myself in the house of Rimon, when I bow myself in the house of Rimon,

  523. the Lord pardon your servant in this matter. He said to him, Go in peace.

  524. And so on. And may God bless that reading from his word to our souls. We're going to sing again

  525. before we turn back to this passage in Psalm 31. We're singing the Sing Psalms version. Psalm 31 on

  526. page 36 of the Psalm books. I'm going to sing from verse 1 to verse 7. In you I have taken refuge,

  527. Lord. You are my shelter in distress, so let me never be ashamed, but save me in your righteousness.

  528. We're going to sing verse 1 to verse 7, and the tune is Rockingham, and we'll stand to sing.

  529. in you I have taken refuge, Lord. You are my shelter in distress. Oh, let me never be ashamed, but save me in your righteousness.

  530. Lord, turn you here to hear my cry. How quickly to be dear to hear my cry. How quickly to be dear to hear my cry.

  531. Lord, deliver me, and bring my love and firm defense, my stronghold and security.

  532. You are my fortress and my love. You are my fortress and my love. For you may save me, my sure guide.

  533. You understand we備 must.

  534. je imposing on your presque, my어저 issue with case remain.

  535. Repeut torque by pada хуй 쫓往 deport us,

  536. 42 daynaw-da-ch swoop.

  537. For me wewife may, festivals and my morn lowe in distress display.

  538. Repeut knee knock, paul loboa man, and retech.

  539. For me wepin' 예看 nach christen kanu' rye,

  540. O God of truth, my spirit I commit to you.

  541. I hate all those who trust false gods.

  542. I trust the Lord, for he is true.

  543. I will rejoice and take delight in all the love that you have shown.

  544. For my affection you have seen.

  545. To you, my soul's distress is known.

  546. Amen.

  547. Well, if we can turn back to our reading in 2 Kings 5.

  548. We want to consider these verses we've read.

  549. Together we read of this man called Naaman.

  550. Naaman, who was, as we read in verse 1, commander of the army of the king of Syria.

  551. He was a great man with his master and in high favor, because by him the Lord had given victory to Syria.

  552. He was a mighty man of valor, but he was a leper.

  553. And so it goes on.

  554. There are many things that we maybe think are hidden from others in this life.

  555. Many things that we probably know in our own hearts that we're glad that people don't know about us.

  556. But God's word reminds us that there is nothing hidden from the Lord.

  557. You know, in the psalm we just sang, Psalm 31.

  558. In verse 7 we read these words.

  559. For my affliction you have seen.

  560. To you my soul's distress is known.

  561. And in the midst of Naaman's life, in the midst of everything that was good in his life, as he would see it himself,

  562. there was something that was a great affliction to him.

  563. But almost unbeknown to him, the Lord had a great plan and a greater plan for him than anything that he could have planned in his own heart.

  564. And that's what we want to look at this evening as we come to look at this passage.

  565. One of the many things that people will look forward to on a Sunday, and perhaps you've already enjoyed this afternoon,

  566. is to sit down to a nice meal.

  567. To sit down and enjoy maybe a traditional Sunday roast.

  568. Gathered around the table, maybe with family and friends.

  569. Sometimes it's hard to beat, just a nice roast and all the trimmings.

  570. But with it comes another issue.

  571. The dishes.

  572. There may be a rush to come and sit at the table when everyone's called, that the food is ready.

  573. But then once all the food is gone, once all the food has been devoured,

  574. there'll be a different kind of rush.

  575. And that's the rush away from having to do the dishes.

  576. We'll leave that for someone else to do.

  577. Because to make a roast involves a lot of work.

  578. The roasting dish will be hard to clean.

  579. The pan of vegetables that's dried and burnt to the bottom will be impossible to clean.

  580. The Yorkshire dish, the Yorkshire pudding dish, it just will not clean no matter how much you scrub at it.

  581. So there's a lot of work.

  582. And that's when people will disappear.

  583. And that's why there are billions spent on trying to find the magic cleaning agent

  584. or the magic machine that will do the work for you.

  585. But there are some stains that are just impossible and so hard to remove.

  586. Well, this evening as we look at Naaman, we're looking at a man who in the midst of all his power and all his wealth,

  587. a man who probably never had to clean a dish in his life.

  588. We look at him, but he's got a different problem.

  589. A different issue that's needing cleaning.

  590. But no matter how much he has and no matter how much he can try to deal with this issue himself,

  591. it is impossible.

  592. It's a stain that's impossible to remove by himself.

  593. As we've read there in verse 1, you see so many things about this man.

  594. So many things that would have held him in great esteem among his people.

  595. He was a man of great power, a commander of the army, second only to the king of Syria.

  596. And yet he finds himself having to humble himself and look for help from someone he would never want to go near

  597. by his own choice.

  598. To go to the people of Israel.

  599. To go to the prophet of God.

  600. To go to Elisha in order to be healed.

  601. And yet it's into this amazing situation that we see God working things for his good.

  602. From the most unexpected of sources comes a word of hope to him.

  603. From a little girl who had been taken captive.

  604. Who has a great burden for her Lord as she calls him.

  605. For her master.

  606. And she speaks to his wife these wonderful words.

  607. If only he would look to the Lord.

  608. If he would only listen to this prophet of God.

  609. And it's in this encounter that the word of God takes hold of this man who was a stranger to the God of Israel.

  610. A stranger to the Lord and his grace.

  611. And at the center, at the heart of it, is what it really means to be clean.

  612. To have that stain of sin washed away.

  613. A stain that we can never remove ourselves.

  614. But that only the Lord can.

  615. It's a reminder to us of ourselves.

  616. And how we are a people who are unclean in so many ways.

  617. But how the Lord is able to work from the inside out.

  618. To make us clean.

  619. In other words, to make us right with God.

  620. But we may see ourselves in Naaman.

  621. Or we have to see ourselves in Naaman.

  622. In different ways to know this cleaning.

  623. In order for our hearts to be made right with God.

  624. Our hearts need to be pricked.

  625. Just as Naaman's was.

  626. And there's three things I want us to see about Naaman this evening.

  627. That remind us of ourselves.

  628. The first thing is this.

  629. That Naaman was a sick man.

  630. The second thing is he was a stubborn man.

  631. The third thing.

  632. And the most amazing thing is he was a saved man.

  633. So the first thing we see is Naaman is a sick man.

  634. Naaman and who he was.

  635. We are introduced there in verse 1.

  636. It tells us all about him.

  637. But what does it tell us?

  638. What does it say in that verse that stands out to you?

  639. He was a commander.

  640. Commander of the army of the king of Syria.

  641. Which at this time was one of the most powerful kingdoms in the whole world.

  642. It's hard for us to imagine just the power that this man had.

  643. The hold that he had over his own armies.

  644. And over all the nations around him.

  645. People lived in fear of him.

  646. He was a commander in the midst of this.

  647. It says too that he was a great man with his master.

  648. He was trusted by the king of Syria.

  649. He gave him all authority and all power to do as he saw right in his eyes.

  650. To go about all his conquests.

  651. He was trusted by the king of Syria.

  652. It also says that he was a mighty man of valor.

  653. He was a brave man.

  654. He had conquered many nations.

  655. Many people.

  656. He'd won many battles over his years.

  657. You can almost see him as being untouchable in so many different ways.

  658. And these are the kinds of things that in our day and age are so appealing to people now as well.

  659. They want this sense of being untouchable as we were hearing this morning about everybody has their own individual ideas.

  660. You cannot tell me what to do.

  661. I am going to do what I want.

  662. And these are the things that people see as being important.

  663. People want power and wealth and authority are strived for.

  664. And as we've seen over the last few years, they're not easily given up.

  665. Nobody wants to let go of this power.

  666. Nobody wants to let go of this authority if they have it.

  667. People want this sense of power.

  668. But yet there is something about Naaman in this verse that it tells us to.

  669. Something telling.

  670. You see, at the end of verse 1, there is a but.

  671. He may have been all these great things.

  672. A commander.

  673. A trusted man.

  674. A man of valor.

  675. A mighty man of valor.

  676. Yet it says at the end of the verse,

  677. But he was a leper.

  678. He was a sick man.

  679. No matter how much power.

  680. No matter how much money or authority he had.

  681. This was something that was incurable.

  682. He was a sick man.

  683. Now we've experienced much sickness in different ways over these last few years.

  684. Our world was living in a way where it seemed people were untouchable.

  685. Nothing could get to them.

  686. And yet during the pandemic, it seemed at some points that each day it was emphasized just how contagious the virus was.

  687. And it was often noted that even so-and-so has got it.

  688. And it's almost like people were astonished, surprised, that people in positions such as the rich and the famous sports people, the politicians, that this virus could touch them.

  689. And yet no one was immune to it.

  690. No matter the power that Naaman had.

  691. No matter the wealth that Naaman had.

  692. He was sick.

  693. And no matter the power that anyone has today.

  694. Or the status that anyone has today.

  695. People are not immune to sickness.

  696. But this is telling us more than just a physical illness.

  697. This is reminding us of a greater problem.

  698. A problem that's even more contagious than any virus of this world that comes our way in this world.

  699. And it's the problem of sin.

  700. Sin is the greatest sickness that we experience.

  701. And we all have it.

  702. You see, no matter how you describe your life today.

  703. No matter how well you feel today.

  704. Or no matter how weak and vulnerable you maybe feel today.

  705. This is something we cannot get away from.

  706. This is a problem we all have.

  707. We all have this but in our life.

  708. Not I am a leper.

  709. But I am a sinner.

  710. I am a sinner.

  711. Naaman was a sick man.

  712. You and I are sick people.

  713. Because the word of God tells us so.

  714. You read in the book of Romans chapter 3 verse 23.

    Romans 3:23

  715. We all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

  716. No matter how much we try and deny it.

  717. No matter how much we try and push that away from us.

  718. No matter how much the world will tell us that we cannot say you are a sinner.

  719. The word of God tells us that we are sick.

  720. That we are all sinners.

  721. Naaman was a mighty man.

  722. A powerful man.

  723. But he was a sick man.

  724. But in the midst of this.

  725. There is something greater going on.

  726. God is at work.

  727. There is another but in this verse.

  728. A verse.

  729. A but that we maybe don't see.

  730. Immediately that doesn't stand out as much as.

  731. But he was a leper.

  732. You see in this opening verse.

  733. It is not all about Naaman.

  734. It is not telling us.

  735. How great Naaman was.

  736. It is telling us.

  737. How great God is.

  738. You read through verse 1 there.

  739. And there is all these things about Naaman.

  740. Naaman was a commander of the army.

  741. He was a great man with his master.

  742. High in favor.

  743. But in the middle of the verse it says.

  744. Another but if you like.

  745. But because.

  746. By him.

  747. The Lord.

  748. Had given victory to Syria.

  749. It wasn't through Naaman's power.

  750. It wasn't through Naaman's.

  751. Military tactics.

  752. Or skills.

  753. It was the Lord.

  754. That had given victory.

  755. It was the Lord.

  756. Who had won.

  757. God.

  758. Was in the midst.

  759. Of everything here.

  760. And it's a reminder to us as well.

  761. For all.

  762. Our world is sin sick.

  763. That God.

  764. Is working in this world.

  765. God is working.

  766. His purposes.

  767. Through all his works of providence.

  768. Providence.

  769. God is still working.

  770. Providence.

  771. That doesn't seem to make sense to us.

  772. At times.

  773. Who could understand.

  774. Why this mighty nation of Syria.

  775. Naaman's day.

  776. Was all conquering.

  777. And all powerful.

  778. When they did not trust God.

  779. Yet in the midst of it.

  780. God was teaching his people lessons.

  781. And God was working.

  782. Even in the heart of Naaman.

  783. An enemy of God.

  784. It was the Lord.

  785. Who had given.

  786. Victory.

  787. In all the victories.

  788. That Naaman had.

  789. It was the Lord.

  790. Naaman.

  791. Could do nothing.

  792. Without the Lord.

  793. Willing it.

  794. And the same.

  795. Is true for ourselves.

  796. Too.

  797. We are lost.

  798. Apart from the Lord.

  799. God.

  800. But we should be thankful.

  801. That the Lord is speaking.

  802. That the Lord is working.

  803. That the Lord looks down.

  804. On this sin sick world.

  805. And what does he want for his people.

  806. That they might be saved.

  807. That they might come.

  808. To him.

  809. And be saved.

  810. Because there is something else here.

  811. In these opening verses.

  812. That reminds us.

  813. Of God's great works.

  814. In verse 2.

  815. It says.

  816. Now the Syrians.

  817. On one of their raids.

  818. Had carried off.

  819. A little girl.

  820. From the land of Israel.

  821. And she worked.

  822. In the service.

  823. Of Naaman's wife.

  824. She said.

  825. To her mistress.

  826. Would.

  827. That my Lord.

  828. Were with the prophet.

  829. Who is in Samaria.

  830. It's such.

  831. A minute detail.

  832. In so many ways.

  833. Naaman.

  834. Would have had no thought.

  835. For this little girl.

  836. As she was taken captive.

  837. Probably along with hundreds.

  838. Or even thousands of others.

  839. But this little girl.

  840. Was about to change his life.

  841. This little girl.

  842. In God's providence.

  843. Was brought to work.

  844. In his household.

  845. To have a word.

  846. To speak.

  847. To Naaman's wife.

  848. Would.

  849. That my Lord.

  850. Were with the prophet.

  851. Who is in Samaria.

  852. Watching the courage.

  853. Of that little girl.

  854. To speak.

  855. To say these words.

  856. To her masters.

  857. In their own home.

  858. To stand up before them.

  859. And direct them.

  860. To their enemy.

  861. And say.

  862. You can get help there.

  863. From this man.

  864. Of God.

  865. From this prophet.

  866. Of God.

  867. The courage.

  868. Of this little girl.

  869. And then.

  870. Isn't it wonderful.

  871. How God.

  872. Works together.

  873. All things.

  874. How God.

  875. In the midst.

  876. Of this mighty.

  877. Man of valor.

  878. Life.

  879. Uses.

  880. A little.

  881. Helpless girl.

  882. To direct him.

  883. To the place.

  884. Of healing.

  885. What we see.

  886. In this little girl.

  887. Is what we should see.

  888. In every Christian.

  889. Courage.

  890. Courage.

  891. To speak.

  892. And to point people.

  893. To the prophet of God.

  894. To the son of God.

  895. To Jesus Christ.

  896. And to say.

  897. To the sin sick world.

  898. I know your problem.

  899. Because I have it too.

  900. I am a sinner.

  901. In my heart.

  902. Yet I know.

  903. Where there is hell.

  904. Would.

  905. That you would go.

  906. To Christ.

  907. Would.

  908. That you would come.

  909. To him.

  910. Who is able.

  911. To heal.

  912. We have a powerful man.

  913. Who is a sick man.

  914. But who hears.

  915. Of a great God.

  916. And that is what we should long for today.

  917. For ourselves.

  918. To know our sickness.

  919. To know that.

  920. No matter what power we feel we have.

  921. We are unable to do anything about this sickness.

  922. But to hear.

  923. That there is a God.

  924. Who can help.

  925. To acknowledge our sin.

  926. To acknowledge our weakness before God.

  927. Pleading for help.

  928. With him.

  929. But we see the second thing.

  930. Is a problem we also have so often.

  931. Naaman.

  932. Is a stubborn man.

  933. And isn't that a problem.

  934. We so often have.

  935. Ourselves too.

  936. You just look at the way Naaman responds.

  937. When he hears about this.

  938. Possibility of help.

  939. He hears.

  940. The potential of healing.

  941. For himself.

  942. And he's keen.

  943. To find out.

  944. What it is.

  945. But he wants it on his own terms.

  946. He wants everything done.

  947. His way.

  948. And that's because.

  949. Like you and I.

  950. He was stubborn.

  951. Sin.

  952. Makes us stubborn.

  953. Sin makes us a people.

  954. Who want to work things out.

  955. For ourselves.

  956. We want things done.

  957. In our own way.

  958. And who is willing.

  959. To acknowledge.

  960. Their stubbornness.

  961. We are so often.

  962. Too slow.

  963. To admit it.

  964. Even if someone was to tell us.

  965. Why are you so stubborn?

  966. Or you're just a stubborn person.

  967. Our natural reaction.

  968. Would be to say.

  969. I'm not stubborn.

  970. Our stubbornness.

  971. Makes us stubborn.

  972. To admit we're stubborn.

  973. We don't want.

  974. To admit it.

  975. And we'll go on the defensive.

  976. Straight away.

  977. And so.

  978. If someone tells us.

  979. You're a sinner.

  980. And you need to come to Christ.

  981. Our natural reaction is.

  982. No I'm not.

  983. And how dare you tell me so.

  984. And you see.

  985. Our own hearts.

  986. In Naaman's.

  987. In his stubbornness.

  988. As you see.

  989. In verse 11.

  990. Naaman was angry.

  991. He was angry.

  992. And he went away.

  993. Saying.

  994. Behold.

  995. I thought he would surely.

  996. Come out to me.

  997. And stand.

  998. And call upon.

  999. The name of the Lord.

1000. And just wave his hand.

  1001. Over the place.

  1002. And cure the leper.

  1003. Why.

  1004. Why.

  1005. Was he so angry.

  1006. Because.

  1007. In his stubbornness.

  1008. He couldn't humble himself.

  1009. To this point.

1010. Where he would receive help.

  1011. From somebody else.

  1012. He wanted it done.

  1013. To.

  1014. In his way.

  1015. First of all.

  1016. He thought.

1017. He could sort things out.

  1018. For himself.

  1019. By his wealth.

  1020. You see that.

  1021. In the middle.

  1022. Of verse 5.

  1023. In verse 5.

  1024. It says.

1025. The king of Syria said.

  1026. Go now.

  1027. And I will send a letter.

1028. To the king of Israel.

  1029. So he went.

  1030. Taking with him.

  1031. Ten talents of silver.

1032. Six thousand shekels of gold.

  1033. And ten changes.

  1034. Of clothes.

  1035. In today's value.

  1036. You're looking at silver.

  1037. They're worth about.

  1038. Two hundred thousand pounds.

  1039. And gold.

  1040. Worth.

  1041. Probably around.

  1042. Three million pounds.

  1043. And here he is.

  1044. Carrying this wealth.

  1045. With him.

  1046. In the hope.

  1047. That he could probably.

  1048. Buy.

  1049. His cleansing.

  1050. Purchase it for himself.

1051. And to be able to say.

  1052. I have done it.

  1053. By my own wealth.

1054. And by my own means.

  1055. But we are fools.

  1056. To think.

1057. That we can in any way.

  1058. Do anything.

  1059. To earn or pay.

  1060. For our salvation.

  1061. To find a way.

1062. That is going to save me.

  1063. That's.

1064. A cost that I can pay myself.

  1065. Because our salvation.

  1066. Is a cost.

  1067. That we can.

  1068. And could never pay.

  1069. Isaiah 55.

  1070. Verse 1.

  1071. Is that.

  1072. Great invitation.

  1073. And says.

  1074. Come.

  1075. Everyone who thirsts.

  1076. Come to the waters.

1077. He who has no money.

  1078. Come.

  1079. Buy and eat.

  1080. Come.

  1081. Buy wine and milk.

  1082. Without money.

  1083. And without price.

1084. But Naaman would rather bring.

  1085. His own wealth.

  1086. To buy it.

1087. And isn't that the stubbornness.

  1088. Of our hearts.

  1089. So often too.

  1090. Where we feel.

1091. That there is a way.

  1092. We can do something.

  1093. About our situation.

  1094. Ourselves.

  1095. We need to learn.

  1096. This lesson.

  1097. Of our stubbornness.

  1098. You cannot.

  1099. We cannot.

  1100. Do anything.

  1101. The second way.

  1102. You see.

  1103. He was stubborn.

  1104. Was.

  1105. Who he came to.

  1106. He was told.

  1107. To go.

  1108. To the prophet.

  1109. Of God.

  1110. In Samaria.

1111. But who does he come to?

  1112. He came.

  1113. To the king.

  1114. Elisha.

1115. Was almost way down the ranks.

1116. He wasn't going to go to a common person.

1117. He was going to go to the top.

  1118. To the king.

1119. If anyone was going to help him.

1120. It would have to be someone really important.

  1121. So he goes.

  1122. To the king.

  1123. But no.

1124. It wasn't to the king.

  1125. He had to go.

  1126. But his stubbornness.

  1127. Made him.

1128. When he did eventually go to Elisha.

1129. He wouldn't even go through his door.

1130. He wasn't going to come down.

1131. And go into his place.

1132. He was going to have to come out to him.

  1133. To help him.

1134. Did he not know who he was?

1135. And how important a person he was.

  1136. In our stubbornness.

1137. We need to humble ourselves.

1138. To recognize how unimportant we are.

1139. And to realize the importance of the one.

1140. Who is able to help.

1141. The one who came into this world.

1142. Who humbled himself by coming into this world.

1143. Who was nothing to be looked at.

1144. And yet when we are saved.

  1145. As the psalmist says.

1146. That we might see the beauty of the Lord.

1147. The beauty of Jesus Christ.

1148. And humble ourselves before him.

1149. Our stubbornness wants things done.

  1150. Our way.

  1151. But humility teaches us.

  1152. And grace teaches us.

1153. There is nothing we can do.

1154. That it has all been done.

1155. By the Son of God.

  1156. By Jesus Christ.

  1157. And to see Jesus.

1158. And to see the price that he has paid.

  1159. Should humble us.

1160. That he came to give his life.

1161. As a ransom for many.

1162. That he came to pay the price.

1163. That we could never pay.

  1164. The book of Acts.

1165. It tells us that there is only one.

1166. Who can heal our sin sick hearts.

  1167. In chapter 4 verse 11.

  1168. It says.

1169. This Jesus is the stone.

1170. Who was rejected by you.

1171. He has become the cornerstone.

  1172. And there is salvation.

  1173. In no one else.

1174. For there is no other name.

1175. Under heaven given among men.

1176. By which we must be saved.

1177. There is no other way.

  1178. In a stubbornness.

  1179. Naaman thought.

1180. He could do things his way.

  1181. Again you look at.

  1182. Verse 11.

  1183. And it says.

  1184. In his anger.

  1185. Behold.

  1186. I thought.

1187. That he would surely come out to me.

  1188. I thought.

1189. This is how it was going to work out.

  1190. I thought.

1191. This was what was going to happen.

1192. And we all have our own plans.

  1193. I thought.

1194. This is how I would be saved.

  1195. But the truth.

  1196. Changes it for us.

1197. To recognize it so often.

  1198. Not what we thought.

1199. But what the Lord wants.

1200. He thought he could change.

  1201. God's plan.

  1202. Naaman thought.

  1203. His ways.

  1204. His ways.

  1205. Were superior.

  1206. To God's ways.

  1207. He even found fault.

  1208. In God's plan.

1209. When Elisha says to him.

  1210. Through the messenger.

  1211. Go and dip yourself.

  1212. Seven times.

  1213. In the Jordan.

  1214. What's his response?

  1215. What an insult.

1216. Are there not better rivers.

  1217. In my own country.

1218. That I could go and dip myself in.

1219. Are there not better places.

  1220. I could go.

1221. Be a bit like someone.

  1222. Saying to us.

  1223. Go to Glasgow.

1224. And dip yourself in the Clyde.

  1225. You say.

  1226. Well.

1227. Why not just go to the Creed?

  1228. It's cleaner.

  1229. It's better.

  1230. But when God says.

  1231. To do something.

  1232. You must do it.

  1233. We must obey.

  1234. The command of God.

  1235. And not say.

  1236. But I've got a better idea.

  1237. I've got a better way.

  1238. If God says.

  1239. Go to church.

  1240. To hear his word.

  1241. You don't say no.

  1242. If God says.

  1243. You're a sinner.

  1244. You don't say.

  1245. No I'm not.

  1246. If God says.

  1247. You must repent.

  1248. You don't say.

  1249. No.

  1250. I've got no need.

  1251. For repentance.

  1252. If God says.

  1253. Believe in the Lord.

  1254. Jesus Christ.

  1255. It's the only way.

  1256. To salvation.

1257. You don't have the right.

  1258. To turn and say.

  1259. No.

  1260. I've got a better way.

1261. For there is only one way.

  1262. To be saved.

1263. And that is through him.

  1264. Millions.

  1265. Every day.

  1266. Make the same mistake.

  1267. That Naaman made.

  1268. Perhaps you've been making.

  1269. That mistake.

  1270. In your own life.

  1271. Again.

  1272. And again.

  1273. You think.

  1274. Your own ways.

  1275. I thought.

  1276. I could do this.

  1277. I thought.

  1278. I could do it.

  1279. This way.

  1280. Or a better way.

  1281. I've got a better plan.

  1282. But God is saying.

  1283. No.

1284. There is no other way.

  1285. To be saved.

  1286. So he speaks.

  1287. To Naaman's.

  1288. Stubborn heart.

  1289. In the same way.

  1290. He speaks.

  1291. To our own.

  1292. Stubborn hearts.

  1293. And he says.

  1294. Do it my way.

  1295. Come.

  1296. Repent.

  1297. And put your trust.

1298. In the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1299. In our stubbornness.

  1300. God sent his son.

1301. To bring a stubborn people.

  1302. Back to himself.

  1303. There is only.

  1304. One way.

  1305. Naaman.

  1306. Was a sick man.

  1307. Something we must acknowledge.

1308. Naaman was a stubborn man.

  1309. Something again.

  1310. We must acknowledge.

  1311. And turn our hearts.

  1312. Towards him.

  1313. But the third thing.

  1314. And the great thing.

  1315. You see here.

  1316. Is Naaman.

  1317. Is a saved man.

  1318. When we see.

  1319. God's grace.

  1320. Fulfilled.

  1321. In his life.

  1322. You see the.

  1323. I thought.

  1324. I knew best.

  1325. In verse 11.

  1326. God.

  1327. I know.

  1328. He is a saint.

  1329. I know.

  1330. He is a saint.

  1331. In verse 15.

  1332. He returned.

1333. To the man of God.

  1334. To Elisha.

1335. He and all his company.

  1336. And he came.

  1337. And stood before him.

  1338. And he said.

  1339. Behold.

  1340. I know.

  1341. There is no God.

  1342. In all the earth.

  1343. But in Israel.

  1344. I thought.

  1345. I knew.

  1346. He is saying.

  1347. You see his humility.

  1348. Now I know.

  1349. Now I know.

1350. there is no other God in all the earth but in Israel. And this is the God who has come to us

1351. in the person of Jesus Christ. There is no other God but him. What a transformation for this man

1352. Naaman, the second most powerful man in the world, humbled before God.

1353. How was he humbled? How did he come to this point? He obeyed the word of God from the prophet.

1354. He dipped himself seven times into the Jordan and he was cleansed.

1355. There was repentance. There was humility. There was obedience.

1356. He went from unwilling to willing. And you notice some things that brought him to this point.

1357. There was a word from his own servants in verse 13. Even when he was angry, his servants came and said

1358. to him there in verse 13, my father is a great word. The prophet has spoken to you. Will you not do it?

1359. Will you not do it? And sometimes we just have to speak directly to people. People are angry against

1360. God. But they said to him, my Lord, my father, it's a great word the prophet has spoken.

1361. Sometimes the hardest thing for us is to speak the truth.

1362. But in a world that's so confused and lost, it is the truth that needs to be heard.

1363. My friends, you are sinners.

1364. But my friends, there's a cure in Jesus Christ.

1365. Naaman's stubbornness is turned to submission.

1366. Who would have thought, looking at this man, this Naaman, the most powerful man at this time,

1367. that in his stubbornness, he would be changed.

1368. And when we look around ourselves today, we see our own stubbornness and we see the stubbornness of others.

1369. We see the truth in love.

1370. Naaman dipped himself in the Jordan.

1371. And what the word of God is telling us is, you must believe.

1372. You see, Naaman wasn't changed by the dipping itself.

1373. He wasn't changed by the Jordan itself.

1374. It was by the power of God that changed this leper into a man who was clean.

1375. And how are we made clean today?

1376. How can we be made clean?

1377. Well, Peter, in his first letter, tells us,

1378. not with perishable things such as silver or gold,

1379. but with the precious blood of Christ,

1380. like that of a lamb without blenish or spot.

1381. We are made clean through faith in Christ.

1382. And Naaman's cleansing was complete.

1383. He got more than his health.

  1384. He was made whole.

1385. It tells us there at the end of verse 14,

1386. his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child,

  1387. and he was clean.

  1388. He was made well.

1389. And you see it so often in the cleansing of Jesus in the New Testament.

1390. The woman with the issue of blood.

  1391. Blind Bartimaeus.

1392. And so it goes on, there's so many.

1393. By the touch of Christ, they are made well.

  1394. They are made clean.

  1395. They are made whole.

1396. Your faith has made you well, he says.

  1397. We need that faith.

1398. And as he is made well,

1399. you also see that even in his anxieties and his fears

1400. of being a man who had come to trust in the God of Israel,

1401. and he had to go back to his own people,

  1402. to his own land,

1403. and the fear of the worship that they were involved in.

1404. And you see that in verse 17 down to the middle of verse 19.

1405. He's going back to a place that is offering sacrifices to any God,

1406. but the Lord, it says.

1407. There's so much that is wrong with where he is going.

1408. And he has this fear.

1409. And he brings this fear to Elisha.

1410. He's almost saying to him,

1411. he's bowing himself before him.

  1412. He's saying in verse 18,

1413. in this matter, may the Lord pardon your servant.

1414. He knows the challenges he's going to have going back.

1415. But Elisha says this to him,

  1416. go in peace.

1417. And one of our greatest fears

1418. when it comes to faith in the Lord Jesus

1419. is to go back into the world

1420. and to live among a people who will challenge our faith,

1421. a people whose ways may be so different to our faith,

1422. to hear a language that hurts,

1423. to see behavior that hurts.

  1424. We don't avoid it.

1425. You see, Naaman was being put back there

1426. as a light for the gospel,

1427. a powerful man in the midst of that nation,

  1428. just like Daniel,

1429. who stood up for the Lord,

1430. just like so many we see in the scriptures

1431. who stood up for the Lord.

1432. And so we as Christians

1433. are to stand up for the Lord.

1434. Do not be afraid to believe.

  1435. For the Lord says,

  1436. go in peace.

1437. And what these words means is

  1438. he goes with us.

  1439. When we are well,

1440. we are to tell others

1441. of the way to be well

1442. and not to be afraid,

1443. for the Lord is with us.

1444. He will never leave us

  1445. or forsake us.

1446. He is with his people always.

1447. That is the great promise.

1448. Do you see yourself then in this man, Naaman?

1449. We are a sick people,

  1450. just like Naaman.

  1451. But in God's providence,

1452. here we are with the opportunity

  1453. to know

1454. the one who is able to make us clean,

  1455. the Lord Jesus.

1456. We are a stubborn people.

1457. Our hearts are always stubborn.

1458. To be told what we must do,

  1459. we don't like it.

1460. The Lord is telling us,

  1461. humble yourselves.

  1462. Humble yourselves

1463. unto the mighty arm of God

1464. so that he may lift you up.

1465. That's what the gospel tells us.

1466. And the gospel assures us

1467. that when we come to the Lord Jesus,

  1468. we are made well,

  1469. we are made clean,

1470. and we are able to go in peace.

1471. That peace that only he can give.

1472. We all have this issue of uncleanness.

1473. The stain that's so hard to remove,

  1474. impossible for ourselves.

1475. But God sent his son into this world

1476. that these stain of sin

1477. may be eradicated from our hearts,

1478. that we may be made well with him,

1479. and that we may know his peace.

  1480. Just like Naaman,

1481. we are to humble ourselves in obedience

  1482. and come to him.

1483. So may we hear that great invitation

1484. to come and be clean,

  1485. to be well,

1486. and to go in peace.

1487. May God bless his word to us.

1488. We're going to conclude by singing

1489. to his praise in Psalm 92

  1490. in the Scottish Psalter.

  1491. Psalm 92,

  1492. page 351.

  1493. We'll sing from verse 1 to verse 3.

  1494. Psalm 91,

  1495. Psalm 92, sorry.

  1496. Psalm 92,

  1497. in the Scottish Psalter,

  1498. verse 1 to verse 3.

1499. To render thanks unto the Lord,

1500. it is a comely thing,

  1501. and to thy name,

  1502. O thou most hide,

1503. you praise aloud to sing.

  1504. We'll sing from verse 1 to verse 3

  1505. to God's praise.

1506. You praise aloud to sing.

1507. You praise aloud to sing.

1508. To praise aloud to sing.

1509. To praise aloud to sing.

1510. Love to die in all the most high,

1511. to praise aloud to sing.

  1512. Thy lovingkindness to show

1513. for when shines a morning light,

1514. and to declare thy faithfulness

  1515. with pleasure every night,

  1516. with pleasure every night,

  1517. with pleasure every night,

1518. and to declare thy faithfulness,

  1519. with pleasure every night,

1520. on heart and sing it instrument,

  1521. upon the psaltery,

1522. And on heart and singлена.

1523. And on heart we shall

1524. and sound a BE sweet melody,

  1525. and邊 sweet melody,

  1526. and邊 sweet melody,

  1527. and邊 sweet melody,

  1528. and two.

1529. And on the heart will fall in sun

1530. And grace be carried out thee

1531. After the benediction I'll go to the door to my right hand side

1532. Let's close with the benediction

1533. Now may grace, mercy and peace from God

1534. Father, Son and Holy Spirit

1535. Rest upon and abide with us all

  1536. Now and forevermore

  1537. Amen
