  1. time this evening to the passage we read in exodus exodus chapter 15 and we're looking at

    Exodus 15 chapter mention

  2. these verses 1 to 21 and not looking at every detail but some of the main strands of teaching

  3. in it if we take verse 11 to be equivalent to an unopened parcel who is like you oh lord among the

  4. gods who is like you majestic in holiness awesome and glorious deeds doing wonders we can then see

  5. the verses around that beginning from the beginning of the chapter through to where we finished as the

  6. unpacking of that parcel contents if you like of what's stated in verse 11 the wonder of god majestic

  7. in his holiness as he was seen in the various details that are described there throughout the

  8. chapter the awesomeness of god in glorious deeds especially as he gave the people of israel to be

  9. released from egypt to be redeemed from egypt and to come to the promised land ultimately as he would

  10. take them into so there's the unpacking if you like of that parcel in verse 11 the rest of it there

  11. just lies around it arranged in such a way that you can see content to some degree of what verse 11

  12. actually contains and there are two things anyway in summary of that that we can look at with a number

  13. of points under each of these first of all there's a celebration in looking back this is a song of moses

  14. and the people of israel at this juncture so they're celebrating as they're looking back they're

  15. celebrating their release their deliverance they're celebrating god's magnificent victory over their

  16. enemies it's a celebration as they look back but also from verse 13 especially it's a certainty as they

  17. look ahead there is a certainty in the language there's a certainty as they reflect on the past that

  18. feeds into the future as it will unfold before them and there's a confidence in what they say in this

  19. song to the lord that because god has done such great things in the redemption from egypt he will go on

  20. providing for them until they are settled in the land that he has promised them so these are the two

  21. main points that i want to just lay before you first of all a celebration in looking back and then

  22. there's certainly a certainty in looking ahead and we can relate these to our own experience as christians

  23. in the world and as we look back over what god has done as we've experienced god's deliverance from sin

  24. deliverance from our own lost condition so that gives us encouragement to look forward to know that god

  25. and be certain that god having done what he's done in our past is actually going to complete in our future

  26. what he has promised to do for us now there's a principle here that's somewhat difficult to deal

  27. with and that's the principle of actually singing this song at such a juncture and over such a specific

  28. issue how could it be that the people of israel founded right in their hearts to sing this song

  29. which contains so much emphasis about the destruction of their enemies the egyptians how could they actually

  30. have over such a solemn thing as the destruction of the egyptians or the egyptian forces in the red sea

  31. how could they then move immediately to sing such a song or to sing at all in the light of that solemn event

  32. of destruction well you find some other parts of the bible where very similar things take place let me just

  33. take your minds forward in the bible to the last book of the bible and you'll find revelation chapter 15

    Revelation 15 chapter mention

  34. and verse 3 they sang there when they saw this great sign in heaven

  35. where the for whom the wrath of god is finished this is the land the lord who had conquered the beast

  36. and his image and the number of its name standing beside the sea of glass and he sang the song of

  37. moses the servant of god and the song of the lamb saying great and amazing are your deeds o lord god

  38. almighty just and true are your ways o king of the nations who will not fear o lord and glorify your name

  39. for you alone are holy all nations will come and worship you for your righteous acts have been

  40. revealed and then even further forward even more remarkable in chapter 19 of revelation from the

  41. beginning of the chapter this is uh following on from the overthrow of babylon the great enemy

  42. represented by babylon by the word and uh the the history of of babylon as as the main enemy of the

  43. people of god through the old testament well babylon is overthrown and uh she's thrown into the sea it's a

  44. picture of utter destruction of god's enemies but then you find this um where after this i heard what

  45. seemed to be the loud voice of a great multitude in heaven saying hallelujah salvation and glory and

  46. power belong to our god for his judgments are true and just for he has judged the great prostitute

  47. to corrupt the earth with her immorality and has avenged on her the blood of his servants once more

  48. they cried out hallelujah the smoke from her goes up forever and ever now that's talking about eternal

  49. destruction a most solemn thing to think about and yet it's there as something that's celebrated in song

  50. just as here in this chapter in exodus the overthrow of the egyptians is celebrated in song well how can

  51. that be well some theologians refer to this as intrusion ethics or intrusion teaching when what they mean by

  52. that is that the final state after the judgment after god's people have been settled with them forever

  53. in eternity then the minds of god's redeemed people will perfectly reflect the mind of god himself

  54. and where god finds it just and proper and fitting to deal with his enemies and their enemies in the way

  55. he will then because the minds of his people are very much in tune with perfectly in tune with his will

  56. with his purpose with his act of destruction in regard to the wicked they themselves follow in the same way

  57. or similar way in which you find here in exodus 15 and in the book of revelation to sing praise to the lord

  58. for the way that he has manifested his power towards them in their deliverance carrying with it the destruction

  59. of their enemies of their enemies as well the ultimate purpose of our redemption is praise to god

  60. the ultimate purpose of our redemption is praise to god and every aspect of our experiencing of redemption

  61. should reflect the praise of god what we do and what we say and how we sing

  62. and in this chapter that's what we find this this principle of celebrating of singing the praises of god

  63. who in his wisdom and power and majesty and holiness and might has dealt with his enemies and set his people free

  64. and that's going to be your experience and my experience fully and perfectly in the state of glory

  65. we can't get it into our minds it seems inappropriate in our present state of thinking

  66. it seems inappropriate because we are commanded to pray for our enemies to love those who despise us

  67. and that is not in any way shifted from the emphasis jesus gives to it by anything that's projected

  68. from what the future will be into consideration of it in the present

  69. it's still the case though that this is how the final order will be

  70. this when we are our minds are made perfect

  71. and in tune with the mind of god

  72. then what you find here will be brought to its own perfection and the celebrations

  73. of heaven itself

  74. and the god who is praised

  75. and the god who is praised as described in various ways down through

  76. the chapter verse 11 here

  77. who is like you oh lord among the gods

  78. who is like you majestic

  79. in holiness now all the elements that god has revealed all the attributes all the ways in which

  80. has revealed himself in delivering israel from egypt and all the way through from there into the present day

  81. everything that god does is marked by holiness whether it's in the deliverance of his people

  82. his love for his people his overthrow of their enemies

  83. every aspect of his work is like his being glorious in holiness

  84. is not just a holy god

  85. is not just the holy god

  86. he is the most magnificent holy god

  87. magnificent in his holiness

  88. splendid in his holiness

  89. and that's why we always need to keep before our minds

  90. that the god we worship is splendid as it says he is majestic

  91. in holiness

  92. perhaps one of the reasons

  93. why things are sometimes with ourselves

  94. personally speaking

  95. as they are in our relationship with god

  96. our relationship with the world

  97. our view of the world

  98. and all those things that are

  99. that are involved in that

  100. that we don't appreciate as we should

  101. the majesty of god

  102. and his holiness

  103. the majestic holiness of god

  104. and the way in which god in his majestic holiness

  105. makes it clear to us in that itself

  106. how worthy he is to be worshipped

  107. how worthy he is to be served

  108. how worthy he is to be praised

  109. how worthy he is of everything that comes his way

  110. from his redeemed church

  111. tonight as we gather here in this meeting for prayer

  112. for study of the bible

  113. for the praise of god

  114. this is what is before us

  115. we are here to worship the majestic god

  116. the god majestic in his holiness

  117. we are here not to cringe before him

  118. but we are here to fall before him

  119. in love

  120. and what the bible calls the fear of god

  121. fear of god

  122. being a respect and an awe

  123. of the majestic holiness of god

  124. or the majestic god

  125. in his holiness

  126. yes

  127. but secondly you have

  128. an emphasis here

  129. in celebration of looking back

  130. not just

  131. the majestic holiness of god

  132. but also the power of god

  133. there it is in verse 11

  134. awesome

  135. in glorious deeds or actions

  136. doing wonders

  137. go back to verse 3

  138. the lord is a man of war

  139. the lord is his name

  140. of course you've got to bear

  141. in context

  142. in mind the context for this

  143. some of those who would

  144. criticize us for believing the bible

  145. and who would suggest that perhaps

  146. a christian religion is responsible

  147. for much of the damage that's in the world

  148. would point to verses like that

  149. and say

  150. the lord is a man of war

  151. isn't your god

  152. one who delights in killing people

  153. one who delights in doing things

  154. which really cause pain and distress to people

  155. well i hope we know how to answer that

  156. first of all the context here

  157. the lord is facing

  158. those who are willingly

  159. and uh

  160. not just willingly

  161. but violently

  162. his enemies

  163. and the enemies of his people

  164. what is god going to do

  165. well you might say god

  166. could have converted all of us

  167. really he could

  168. but that's not his purpose

  169. and you fall into line with his purpose

  170. whatever that purpose

  171. may be

  172. and however difficult it may be

  173. for us to follow it

  174. he is god

  175. he knows what's right

  176. he knows

  177. what he's doing at all times

  178. and you notice here

  179. the right hand of god is mentioned

  180. you stretched out your right hand

  181. the earth swallowed them

  182. now

  183. um

  184. apparently it was the case that

  185. representations of pagan idols

  186. very often had

  187. in the right hand

  188. a symbol of their power

  189. whether it be a sword

  190. or a crown

  191. or something like that

  192. they were represented by

  193. the images of them

  194. as having this capacity

  195. this power

  196. this ability

  197. this overriding

  198. power and influence

  199. over those who came to worship them

  200. and over those

  201. uh

  202. that they were represented

  203. to to protect

  204. wrongly of course

  205. but here is god

  206. and here is the song of

  207. of triumph to god

  208. you stretched out

  209. your right hand

  210. their right hand

  211. whatever they had

  212. on their right hand

  213. was pretty useless

  214. when it came

  215. to the matter of

  216. facing you oh lord

  217. because you stretched out

  218. your right hand

  219. the right hand of your might

  220. and there's also

  221. uh

  222. an emphasis here

  223. to to floods

  224. um

  225. the earth swallowed them

  226. but uh

  227. all the way through

  228. you've got

  229. emphasis on

  230. on on floods

  231. uh

  232. here through the red sea

  233. of course being

  234. itself

  235. uh

  236. a volume of water

  237. look back to verse 5

  238. uh

  239. the floods covered them

  240. they went down into the depth

  241. like a stone

  242. now this is

  243. a really interesting thing

  244. for you yourselves

  245. to to pursue through

  246. i'm just going to

  247. lay it out

  248. you can follow this out

  249. yourselves

  250. especially if you've got

  251. a concordance

  252. just look up the word

  253. floods

  254. and look at the number

  255. of times that the word

  256. floods is used

  257. in a similar way to this

  258. because floods

  259. especially in the old

  260. testament

  261. represent

  262. the powers of enmity

  263. against god

  264. the powers of

  265. those who

  266. gather together

  267. against the lord's

  268. people

  269. and against god himself

  270. and who gather in

  271. all the might that

  272. they can muster

  273. in order to try and

  274. prevent the lord

  275. from carrying out

  276. his purpose

  277. and again you find

  278. that same thing

  279. uh

  280. through the bible

  281. but you find it

  282. very frequently

  283. and interestingly

  284. significantly

  285. in the book of psalms

  286. book of psalms

  287. that we

  288. of course use

  289. in our worship

  290. psalm 29

    Psalms 29:3

  291. verse 3

  292. the voice of the lord

  293. is over the waters

  294. the glory of god

  295. thunders

  296. the lord

  297. over many waters

  298. the voice of the lord

  299. is powerful

  300. the voice of the lord

  301. is full

  302. of majesty

  303. go to psalm 77

  304. and there again

  305. you find

  306. in psalm 77

  307. a similar emphasis

  308. in verses

  309. 16

  310. in verse 16

  311. there you find

  312. when the water

  313. saw you

  314. oh god

  315. when the water

  316. saw you

  317. they were afraid

  318. indeed

  319. the deep

  320. trembled

  321. you'll find for

  322. yourselves

  323. other

  324. i'll read one more

  325. than that

  326. in the book of psalms

  327. there are many more

  328. that you can find out

  329. for yourselves

  330. it's a very useful

  331. interesting exercise

  332. to do that

  333. and to follow out

  334. the teaching there

  335. of the waters

  336. and what they represent

  337. and how the lord

  338. overcame them

  339. on behalf of his people

  340. well psalm 124

  341. one of the

  342. all-time favourite psalms

  343. of the covenanters

  344. in scotland

  345. well i'm sure

  346. know what that

  347. terrible situation

  348. was like

  349. for the covenanters

  350. having to meet

  351. sometimes in secret

  352. of the moors

  353. on the moors

  354. pursued by

  355. red coat soldiers

  356. and so on

  357. this was one of

  358. their favourite psalms

  359. and it's for good reason

  360. you can see

  361. why it was one of

  362. the favourite psalms

  363. if it had not been

  364. the lord

  365. who was on our side

  366. let israel now say

  367. if it had not been

  368. the lord

  369. who was on our side

  370. then when people

  371. rose up against us

  372. then they would have

  373. swallowed us alive

  374. when their anger

  375. was kindled against us

  376. then the flood

  377. would have swept us away

  378. the torrent

  379. would have gone over us

  380. then over us

  381. would have gone

  382. the raging waters

  383. see three references

  384. there to the power

  385. of the waters

  386. the power of the floods

  387. and all the time

  388. there's an emphasis

  389. god has not given us

  390. to that

  391. god has overcome that

  392. god has delivered

  393. his people

  394. and of course

  395. you find the same

  396. in the red sea

  397. this was what stood

  398. in the face

  399. of the people

  400. moving forward

  401. and the lord

  402. showed his might

  403. that these great waters

  404. that were sometimes

  405. used to represent

  406. this body

  407. of enmity

  408. against god

  409. he just

  410. cut it in two

  411. and let his people

  412. pass through

  413. now all of that

  414. follows through

  415. into your experience

  416. as well

  417. as the people

  418. of god

  419. because you can see

  420. it in your own

  421. personal experience

  422. how waters

  423. so very readily

  424. represent

  425. the various

  426. aspects

  427. of the difficulties

  428. and the trials

  429. and the challenges

  430. that face you

  431. in the christian life

  432. and how so often

  433. they seem to be

  434. just ready to

  435. overthrow you

  436. overwhelm you

  437. and come and just

  438. swallow you up

  439. well there's

  440. the emphasis

  441. all the way

  442. through scripture

  443. your trust in the lord

  444. unites you to someone

  445. who stands over the waters

  446. who presides over them

  447. in such a way

  448. that they will not

  449. swallow you up

  450. even though sometimes

  451. they may seem to come

  452. very far up

  453. in your experience

  454. and then of course

  455. he refers to

  456. his love

  457. and his fury

  458. and they're both

  459. together here

  460. interesting in verse 13

  461. you have led

  462. in your steadfast love

  463. the people

  464. whom you have redeemed

  465. you have guided them

  466. by your strength

  467. to your holy abode

  468. and he mentions

  469. the fury of the lord

  470. elsewhere

  471. and the anger

  472. with which god

  473. dealt with his enemies

  474. well verse 13

  475. the steadfast love

  476. of the lord

  477. is his loving kindness

  478. to his people

  479. so often

  480. we come across

  481. this word

  482. in the old testament

  483. but there's one thing

  484. that it carries

  485. with it as well

  486. and it's important

  487. because alongside

  488. of god's steadfast love

  489. for his people

  490. and these words

  491. are important

  492. as a translation

  493. loving kindness

  494. or steadfast love

  495. it really means

  496. the absolute

  497. commitment of god

  498. to his people

  499. and to his own purpose

  500. in them

  501. and through them

  502. and for them

  503. but his own absolute

  504. commitment to that

  505. means

  506. that his enemies

  507. are bound

  508. to be overthrown

  509. the loving kindness

  510. of god for his people

  511. the steadfast love

  512. of god for his people

  513. carries with it

  514. inevitably

  515. the destruction

  516. of all those

  517. who themselves

  518. choose willingly

  519. to stand against him

  520. and against his people

  521. and all of that

  522. is brought before us

  523. by way

  524. of a song

  525. for worship

  526. love is committed

  527. to god's people

  528. and the love

  529. in which he's committed

  530. to his people

  531. also carries with it

  532. the way in which he

  533. engages with his enemies

  534. who steadfastly refuse

  535. to bow to him

  536. you see there in verse 9

  537. the enemy said

  538. i will pursue

  539. i will overtake

  540. i will divide the spoil

  541. my desire shall have

  542. its fill of them

  543. i will draw the sword

  544. my hand shall destroy them

  545. there's a reflection

  546. of the society

  547. in which you and i live

  548. just as these waters

  549. of the red sea

  550. represented us

  551. the floods of waters

  552. that which stood

  553. against god

  554. and his people

  555. so you're finding

  556. that in verse 9

  557. the emphasis there

  558. very much fits in

  559. with the attitude

  560. that faces you today

  561. as a christian

  562. where the world

  563. and where

  564. in many aspects

  565. of political life itself

  566. and many other aspects

  567. of our society

  568. sadly

  569. they will say

  570. i will pursue

  571. i will overtake

  572. i'll follow my own

  573. inclinations

  574. i'll pull through

  575. with this

  576. i will actually

  577. be determined

  578. against what

  579. is represented

  580. as god

  581. and the gospel

  582. and the church

  583. i'll stand against that

  584. i'll overthrow that

  585. i'll deal with that

  586. and sadly

  587. throughout the world

  588. that of course

  589. is the case

  590. you've only got to

  591. look to

  592. ukraine

  593. and see someone

  594. like putin

  595. who is determined

  596. that his own will

  597. will carry

  598. as far as the future

  599. of the ukrainian people

  600. is concerned

  601. well god

  602. may very well

  603. have other ideas

  604. and we hope

  605. that it will turn out

  606. eventually

  607. to be

  608. a defeat

  609. for a dictator

  610. like putin

  611. but there is the

  612. emphasis there

  613. in verse 9

  614. and here is god

  615. saying

  616. here are my people

  617. and they are

  618. celebrating the victory

  619. that i have given them

  620. because here's

  621. their song

  622. over the destruction

  623. of their enemies

  624. here's their celebration

  625. of the majestic holiness

  626. the power

  627. the love

  628. and the fury

  629. of god

  630. this is our god

  631. as we sang

  632. one of the songs

  633. and psalms tonight

  634. this is our god

  635. the god we worship

  636. the god we love

  637. the god we pray to

  638. the god we seek

  639. to show his power again

  640. now there's a certainty

  641. of looking ahead

  642. the time is going

  643. certainty

  644. in looking ahead

  645. from verse 13

  646. there's a certain hope

  647. involved in this

  648. you have led

  649. in your steadfast love

  650. the people

  651. whom you have redeemed

  652. you have guided them

  653. by your strength

  654. to your holy abode

  655. it's as if the people

  656. are there already

  657. in the promised land

  658. the peoples have heard

  659. they tremble

  660. you see that certain hope

  661. how is it that they can be

  662. so sure

  663. about the future

  664. as they reflect

  665. on the past

  666. well because of

  667. arguing this way

  668. i think

  669. they're saying really

  670. god has already

  671. done this for us

  672. so

  673. we are right

  674. in thinking

  675. and believing

  676. that he's going

  677. to continue

  678. to bless us

  679. and to carry us

  680. through

  681. until he has

  682. actually settled us

  683. in the promised land

  684. it's really

  685. an argument

  686. from the most

  687. difficult if you like

  688. though nothing is

  689. difficult with god

  690. but in human terms

  691. an argument

  692. from the greatest

  693. to the least

  694. or an argument

  695. from the most

  696. difficult to the

  697. more easy

  698. the most difficult

  699. being to deliver

  700. the people

  701. from their thralldom

  702. and bondage

  703. in egypt

  704. and to carry

  705. them safely

  706. through

  707. having been

  708. pursued by

  709. the egyptians

  710. that you might

  711. say is the way

  712. the song here

  713. reflects on the

  714. most difficult

  715. aspect of their

  716. deliverance

  717. and what it's

  718. really saying

  719. is when god

  720. has already

  721. done this

  722. we can be

  723. certain

  724. that he will

  725. do the lesser

  726. for us

  727. and carrying

  728. us through

  729. the wilderness

  730. into the

  731. promised land

  732. that's of course

  733. speaking

  734. relatively

  735. because as i

  736. said nothing

  737. is difficult

  738. with god

  739. anything

  740. nothing is

  741. more difficult

  742. than anything

  743. else for him

  744. but you carry

  745. that through

  746. into the new

  747. testament as

  748. well and in

  749. your own

  750. experience

  751. when you can

  752. argue that

  753. well when god

  754. has already

  755. delivered me

  756. from my sin

  757. from the guilt

  758. of my sin

  759. when he's brought

  760. me out from

  761. the darkness

  762. in which i once

  763. lived when he's

  764. done that

  765. when he's shattered

  766. the power of sin

  767. in my own life

  768. that's something

  769. from which i can

  770. argue that god

  771. is bound to be

  772. true to his promise

  773. that he will bring

  774. me safely home

  775. he's already done

  776. the most difficult

  777. if you like

  778. using that language

  779. and he's going

  780. to actually be

  781. be sure to bring

  782. us home

  783. and in fact you

  784. find in the new

  785. testament a very

  786. similar argument

  787. used by paul

  788. in romans

  789. chapter eight

  790. and again it's a

  791. chapter we saw

  792. recently some of

  793. it that's set

  794. out there for the

  795. encouragement and

  796. for the assurance

  797. of god's people

  798. who trust in

  799. christ

  800. verse 32

  801. of romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  802. chapter 8

  803. you read as

  804. follows

  805. well he's

  806. verse 31

  807. what shall we

  808. say to these

  809. things if god

  810. is for us who

  811. can be against

  812. us he who did

  813. not spare his

  814. own son but

  815. gave him up for

  816. us all how will

  817. he not also with

  818. him graciously give

  819. us all things you

  820. see there's the

  821. same principle

  822. paul is saying

  823. look at this

  824. god has already

  825. done this amazing

  826. thing he did not

  827. spare his own

  828. son but he

  829. delivered him up

  830. for us all

  831. now when he's

  832. done that paul

  833. is saying how

  834. shall he not

  835. with him in

  836. union with him

  837. also freely

  838. graciously give

  839. us all things

  840. there's paul's

  841. argument so that

  842. these christians

  843. in rom are

  844. encouraged by

  845. what he has to

  846. say he's saying

  847. to them look at

  848. what god has

  849. already done

  850. look at the

  851. cross look at

  852. what the cross

  853. is look at the

  854. fact of the

  855. cross not the

  856. liberal theology

  857. version of the

  858. cross but the

  859. new testament

  860. pauline version

  861. of the cross

  862. the lord's own

  863. presentation of

  864. his cross and

  865. of his death

  866. when you see

  867. what that entails

  868. what that has

  869. done what has

  870. been included in

  871. that what that

  872. involved well

  873. how is he going

  874. to not fulfill

  875. what remains of

  876. your own christian

  877. journey to heaven

  878. and entrance to

  879. glory that's why

  880. he's saying here

  881. he has taken

  882. out the people

  883. he has redeemed

  884. them you have

  885. guided them by

  886. your strength to

  887. your holy abode in

  888. other words from

  889. what already has

  890. happened in their

  891. deliverance he's

  892. now saying you've

  893. taken us out

  894. you're now looking

  895. after us and you

  896. will take us home

  897. that's exactly where

  898. you are in your

  899. christian thinking

  900. isn't it tonight

  901. you're saying to

  902. god lord you've

  903. done the great

  904. thing of delivering

  905. me from sin and

  906. from the guilt of

  907. my sin you've

  908. done such a great

  909. thing in the cross

  910. to provide salvation

  911. for me you're

  912. looking after me

  913. now you're

  914. providing for me

  915. every day you've

  916. given me your

  917. holy spirit how

  918. shall you not

  919. also with christ

  920. freely give me

  921. all things your

  922. future is secure

  923. and you can argue

  924. that from the

  925. certainty the

  926. factuality of your

  927. redemption in the

  928. past and of

  929. course he mentions

  930. here cringing

  931. enemies as well

  932. as well as the

  933. certain hope

  934. terror and dread

  935. the chiefs of

  936. edom the peoples

  937. have heard they

  938. tremble the chiefs

  939. of edom are

  940. dismayed trembling

  941. ceases the leaders

  942. of moab all the

  943. inhabitants of

  944. canaan have

  945. melted away terror

  946. and dread fall upon

  947. them because of the

  948. greatness of your

  949. arm they are still

  950. as a stone till

  951. your people oh

  952. lord pass by until

  953. the people pass by

  954. whom you have

  955. purchased you will

  956. bring them in and

  957. plant them on your

  958. own mountain

  959. well don't you wish

  960. that that was more

  961. the case in our

  962. own experience in

  963. the day in which we

  964. live that the

  965. reputation of god

  966. not just of his

  967. church the reputation

  968. of god and

  969. delivering his

  970. people the power

  971. and the might and

  972. the presence of

  973. god as was

  974. mentioned in both

  975. prayers tonight

  976. that is something

  977. we would pray and

  978. earnestly plead for

  979. more of in our

  980. experience in the

  981. church and along

  982. with the gospel

  983. today friends we

  984. stand and instead

  985. of the church

  986. actually causing

  987. by the power of

  988. god in our midst

  989. to cause his

  990. enemies to cringe

  991. and to fall into a

  992. state of dread

  993. what we're finding

  994. sadly all too often

  995. is that it's the

  996. church that's

  997. cringing against

  998. the power of

  999. the world

  1000. why is that

  1001. what's the reason

  1002. for that well

  1003. whatever the cause

  1004. of it is is

  1005. because we lack

  1006. the immense power

  1007. of god shown

  1008. through the gospel

  1009. that we would

  1010. like to see

  1011. we pray for that

  1012. we pray that the

  1013. days will come

  1014. when these people

  1015. in the streets

  1016. around us who

  1017. presently stand

  1018. against god and

  1019. stand against his

  1020. gospel that they

  1021. would actually come

  1022. to think and

  1023. hear of god at

  1024. work in his

  1025. people and that

  1026. what they hear of

  1027. god at work in

  1028. his people would

  1029. actually cause them

  1030. to reflect on

  1031. their own situation

  1032. on issues of

  1033. eternity well you

  1034. know there's it's a

  1035. very solemn thing

  1036. that it doesn't

  1037. really appear that

  1038. throughout our own

  1039. locality and

  1040. throughout the

  1041. nation that the

  1042. covid pandemic

  1043. has really had

  1044. much effect on

  1045. people's thinking

  1046. of eternity

  1047. and that's a very

  1048. solemn thing

  1049. that god in his

  1050. purpose should have

  1051. brought such

  1052. devastation

  1053. through this

  1054. pandemic

  1055. and yet people

  1056. have not really

  1057. given consideration

  1058. to god himself

  1059. through it all

  1060. well that

  1061. demonstrates for us

  1062. that not even

  1063. the most grievous

  1064. providence by

  1065. itself can change

  1066. people's hearts

  1067. for that we need

  1068. the power of god

  1069. the presence of god

  1070. the blessing of god

  1071. of his gospel

  1072. to his people first

  1073. of all to you

  1074. and to me

  1075. to make ourselves

  1076. come more alive

  1077. to bring his power

  1078. to bear upon our

  1079. own thoughts and

  1080. upon our own

  1081. actions and upon

  1082. our own daily

  1083. doings

  1084. and from there

  1085. to spread out

  1086. into the community

  1087. around us

  1088. not that we

  1089. should wait

  1090. until we feel

  1091. or know

  1092. or expect

  1093. and experience

  1094. that god is now

  1095. in our midst

  1096. to a great extent

  1097. beyond what we

  1098. have presently

  1099. before we start

  1100. doing outreach

  1101. and trying to

  1102. bring the gospel

  1103. out into a

  1104. community

  1105. I'm not saying

  1106. that at all

  1107. what I'm saying

  1108. is that we have

  1109. to be doing

  1110. that

  1111. but at the same

  1112. time recognize

  1113. that it's the lord

  1114. and his presence

  1115. and his power

  1116. that alone

  1117. can change

  1118. the hearts

  1119. of people

  1120. and that can

  1121. alone bring

  1122. that that sense

  1123. of eternity

  1124. that sense of

  1125. what the what

  1126. this passage

  1127. calls this sense

  1128. of terror and

  1129. dread that falls

  1130. upon these those

  1131. who stand against

  1132. the lord and

  1133. tremble in the

  1134. presence of god

  1135. that's what we

  1136. have seen in the

  1137. past

  1138. when god came

  1139. in reviving

  1140. power

  1141. when god came

  1142. and blessed

  1143. his word

  1144. and empowered

  1145. his people

  1146. and quickened

  1147. them

  1148. that was part

  1149. of the effect

  1150. of it

  1151. it registered

  1152. in the community

  1153. it registered

  1154. in people's

  1155. minds

  1156. people actually

  1157. said there's

  1158. something going

  1159. on here

  1160. it's unusual

  1161. what is it

  1162. what's happening

  1163. in our town

  1164. what's happening

  1165. in our village

  1166. what's happening

  1167. in our streets

  1168. well what was

  1169. happening was

  1170. that god was

  1171. at work

  1172. that god was

  1173. busy changing

  1174. people's lives

  1175. for the good

  1176. there is where

  1177. we really need

  1178. to bring this

  1179. passage into

  1180. our own personal

  1181. experience and

  1182. prayer

  1183. that the arrogant

  1184. defiance against

  1185. god that we

  1186. find sadly

  1187. marking so much

  1188. of our society

  1189. would actually

  1190. come to be

  1191. dispelled

  1192. by the working

  1193. of the holy

  1194. spirit

  1195. and to that

  1196. end

  1197. that we would

  1198. pray

  1199. and work

  1200. and work

  1201. and pray

  1202. till the lord

  1203. establishes his

  1204. people

  1205. and makes us

  1206. cause a praise

  1207. in our midst

  1208. may bless these

  1209. thoughts

  1210. on his word

  1211. lord of god

  1212. we thank you

  1213. that in your word

  1214. you bring us

  1215. so many things

  1216. that both

  1217. challenge and

  1218. encourage us

  1219. to live the

  1220. lives that we

  1221. ought to live

  1222. before you

  1223. we thank you

  1224. for the relevance

  1225. of all of

  1226. these issues

  1227. from so long

  1228. ago

  1229. relevance that

  1230. they have for

  1231. our own day

  1232. we pray lord

  1233. that you would

  1234. bless us to us

  1235. as a congregation

  1236. your own truth

  1237. amongst us

  1238. bless the gospel

  1239. so that we may

  1240. come more and

  1241. more to be

  1242. brought vibrantly

  1243. into your service

  1244. and forgive us

  1245. we pray lord

  1246. for our lack

  1247. of zeal

  1248. forgive us

  1249. for when we

  1250. ourselves fall

  1251. short of what

  1252. we should be

  1253. yet we give

  1254. thanks lord

  1255. for all that

  1256. you enable us

  1257. to do

  1258. and we give

  1259. thanks for

  1260. those especially

  1261. who so give

  1262. of their time

  1263. and of their

  1264. talents to the

  1265. work of the

  1266. gospel in our

  1267. midst as a

  1268. people

  1269. may that

  1270. continue lord

  1271. to be blessed

  1272. blessed by you

  1273. and continue

  1274. now to bless

  1275. us and watch

  1276. over us

  1277. hear our prayer

  1278. accept our

  1279. worship and

  1280. cleanse us

  1281. from all our

  1282. sins

  1283. for jesus

  1284. sake

  1285. amen

  1286. well final

  1287. singing this

  1288. evening is

  1289. psalm 71
