  1. We'll read a few verses around that point in the chapter from verse 24.

  2. Colossians 1 at verse 24.

  3. Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions,

  4. for the sake of his body, that is, the church,

  5. which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God that was given to me for you,

  6. to make the word of God fully known, the mystery hidden for ages and generations,

  7. but now revealed to his saints.

  8. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery,

  9. which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

  10. It's really significant to note during the early centuries of the New Testament church

  11. how some of the great statements of faith were in response to heresy.

  12. If you take the creeds of the church, for example, back in the first few centuries,

  13. such as the Nicene Creed in 325,

  14. where the church council came to formulate that great creed,

  15. along with others that you find in these early centuries,

  16. what you'll find is that they were in response to particular heresies, heresies of the time,

  17. whether it was to do with the Trinity or with the person of Christ or with the Holy Spirit.

  18. The response was that the church at the time,

  19. they came together in these councils and formulated these great statements of theology of faith

  20. to form the creeds that we have since then.

  21. And of course, that led on in later years to statements such as confessions of faith

  22. that you have in the Westminster Confession of Faith

  23. and other confessions of faith that came to be formulated as statements of the,

  24. or a summary of the truth of scripture itself in a more comprehensive way than the early creeds did.

  25. And you find the same thing in Paul's letters as well,

  26. because what we're looking at this evening as part of the letter to the Colossians

  27. is something that is Paul's response to the heresy or the false teaching

  28. that was current in his own day,

  29. because he was here encouraging or assuring the Colossians

  30. as they faced that false teaching,

  31. especially when they were facing the kind of ideas

  32. that taught that there were upper levels of Christian experience

  33. that they as Christians in Colossae had not yet reached,

  34. and that they would have to go through various degrees of advancement

  35. using certain rituals or whatever

  36. in order to come to a more full and comprehensive understanding of the truth

  37. and of Christian experience as well.

  38. So, of course, that's been something the church has faced

  39. down through the years since then as well.

  40. And what Paul is doing,

  41. knowing that these false teachers could very easily discourage

  42. and perplex and cause Christians in the church in Colossae,

  43. all these places, to defect or to just become wearied in the faith

  44. or be so perplexed with the false teaching

  45. that they would begin to fall in with what was taught there,

  46. Paul is emphasizing, especially in Colossians here,

  47. two things that are really important for ourselves.

  48. They're not going to be our two headings for the sermon tonight,

  49. but there are two things that run right through the letter to the Colossians.

  50. The first is the completeness of Christ.

  51. How Christ is complete as the Savior of sinners.

  52. Through all that he has done, through his person and work, he is complete.

  53. There is nothing required other than Christ has done.

  54. There is nothing to be taken back from what Christ has done.

  55. He is absolutely complete in addressing the needs

  56. and providing for the needs of lost sinners like ourselves.

  57. And the second thing alongside of that is the completeness of believers in Christ.

  58. That's to say that when we are in Christ,

  59. we are complete or made complete by God.

  60. Not that there isn't still a stage of redemption to be experienced,

  61. to be finalized in glory.

  62. But nevertheless, in terms of our acceptance with God,

  63. in terms of God treating us and regarding us as his people,

  64. we are complete in Christ.

  65. We don't need to work ourselves into any higher levels of acceptance with God.

  66. Everything is in Christ, and in Christ we are already complete as far as God is concerned.

  67. And that goes a great way towards countering the kind of false teaching

  68. that the Colossians faced, that the apostles faced,

  69. that you face in your own experience in this present day as well.

  70. Every time you meet with something that appears to be false teaching,

  71. different to what you find in the New Testament or in the Bible,

  72. ask yourself the question,

  73. is this presenting a complete Christ to me?

  74. Is this teaching, does it entail the sufficiency of Jesus Christ as my Savior?

  75. And as well as that, ask,

  76. well, is this actually saying to me I need something or need to be something

  77. other than what I am in Christ?

  78. Do I need to have something added to my identity in Christ

  79. as somebody that God has accepted and brought into sonship by adoption

  80. and become part of his believing family?

  81. These are the two great issues that we always need to confront,

  82. and you'll always come to Paul's letters especially,

  83. and you'll find the answer in the completeness of Christ

  84. and your completeness in Christ.

  85. So now he comes to assure these Christians in Colossae

  86. that this, in fact, is what is already true of them.

  87. He says,

  88. Well, there's,

  89. a whole lot of things woven together there,

  90. and there are so many things that you need to open up

  91. and would really bear study just to have

  92. a couple of these phrases themselves opened up.

  93. But let's try and keep them together.

  94. He's talking here about this mystery,

  95. the mystery hidden for ages,

  96. the mystery of the riches of the glory of this mystery,

  97. how great it is among the Gentiles.

  98. He's obviously concerned that these Gentiles,

  99. these non-Hebrew Christians who,

  100. in Colossae,

  101. came to know the gospel

  102. and to know Jesus through the gospel.

  103. They're not in any way behind

  104. those of Israel,

  105. those of the Jewish people

  106. who had come from a long history

  107. of God's revelation to them

  108. to actually come to now know Christ as the Messiah.

  109. But he's now saying these Colossian,

  110. former Colossian Gentiles,

  111. non-Jews,

  112. have exactly the same level of acceptance

  113. with God as the Jews did,

  114. as the Christian Jews did.

  115. And he talks here about this mystery.

  116. What does he mean by this mystery?

  117. The word Paul uses elsewhere as well.

  118. We use the word mystery nowadays

  119. in the ordinary sense of it

  120. to indicate something that is unknowable.

  121. It's a mystery.

  122. You just can't understand it.

  123. The word mystery has that meaning to it

  124. as we normally use it.

  125. But the word mystery in Paul's theology,

  126. in Paul's letters,

  127. the word mystery doesn't mean

  128. something unknowable,

  129. but something that was unrevealed,

  130. but has now been revealed in Christ.

  131. The mystery really essentially

  132. is God's saving purpose,

  133. God's plan of salvation,

  134. which incorporated the Gentiles.

  135. That's really so much an integral part

  136. of what Paul calls the mystery,

  137. the plan of God,

  138. that the Gentiles were always included in the plan.

  139. Though in the process of time,

  140. only after Christ

  141. and after the Holy Spirit

  142. had come into the church,

  143. only then were the Gentiles

  144. incorporated through the gospel,

  145. but it was always within God's plan.

  146. That is the mystery.

  147. That is the previously unknown,

  148. but now known

  149. and made known,

  150. revealed by God.

  151. In other words,

  152. Christ himself

  153. really is the center

  154. of that mystery,

  155. that now revealed plan

  156. of God.

  157. And you see,

  158. it's important

  159. that he says here

  160. that he chose

  161. to make known

  162. to the saints,

  163. the mystery hidden

  164. for ages,

  165. but now revealed

  166. to his saints.

  167. When you go back

  168. to the Old Testament

  169. and look at the book

  170. of Jonah,

  171. a great question there.

  172. Why did Jonah

  173. run away

  174. from God's command

  175. to go to Nineveh

  176. and preach repentance

  177. to them?

  178. Why did he turn away,

  179. find a ship

  180. going in the opposite direction?

  181. Why did he not obey

  182. that command of God

  183. there and then?

  184. Well,

  185. the answer to that

  186. really basically

  187. is that

  188. for Jonah

  189. at that time

  190. in God's revelation,

  191. way back

  192. in those times,

  193. Jonah could not

  194. get his head

  195. around the fact

  196. that these heathens

  197. in Nineveh

  198. were going to be part

  199. or could possibly be part

  200. of God's plan

  201. of salvation.

  202. How could they be?

  203. They were enemies

  204. of Israel.

  205. They weren't within

  206. the covenant

  207. that God made

  208. with Israel.

  209. How could it possibly

  210. be that he was

  211. being asked,

  212. that Jonah was being asked

  213. by this covenant

  214. God of Israel

  215. to go to Nineveh,

  216. the capital of Assyria,

  217. these cruel heathen people

  218. and preach repentance

  219. to them?

  220. But that's really

  221. the key to

  222. God's teaching

  223. of Jonah

  224. that the likes

  225. of Ninevites,

  226. heathen people,

  227. Gentile people,

  228. were also part

  229. of God's great plan

  230. of salvation.

  231. And as we come

  232. to Colossians,

  233. Paul is actually

  234. here saying

  235. it's to his saints

  236. that God

  237. has now revealed this.

  238. That's important.

  239. By saints,

  240. he doesn't mean,

  241. of course,

  242. as we've seen already

  243. different times,

  244. he doesn't mean

  245. perfect people,

  246. he doesn't mean

  247. unblemished Christians,

  248. he doesn't mean

  249. people who are just

  250. now at the point

  251. of going to glory

  252. and have been made

  253. perfect.

  254. By saints,

  255. he means those

  256. sanctified in Christ,

  257. those who are in Christ,

  258. therefore set apart

  259. to be God's people

  260. in him.

  261. and God

  262. has made known

  263. to them

  264. this mystery

  265. hidden for ages

  266. but now revealed

  267. to his saints.

  268. Why is he saying that?

  269. Because these false

  270. teachers are saying,

  271. you know,

  272. you're not yet

  273. amongst the elite.

  274. You haven't actually

  275. come to graduate

  276. into the kind

  277. of mysticism,

  278. the kind of mystical

  279. understanding

  280. that we have

  281. of what salvation is,

  282. of how we actually

  283. proceed into

  284. the knowledge

  285. of God.

  286. That's for

  287. a small elite group.

  288. You have to work

  289. your way towards that.

  290. You have to graduate

  291. into this small group.

  292. No,

  293. Paul is saying,

  294. don't listen to that

  295. because every single

  296. Christian,

  297. everybody in Christ,

  298. all the saints

  299. of God,

  300. God has revealed

  301. this mystery

  302. to them.

  303. They're already

  304. incorporated

  305. into the church

  306. of God

  307. in this life

  308. and all those

  309. have the spirit

  310. of God,

  311. are the saints

  312. of God,

  313. they have this

  314. privilege.

  315. And then he moves

  316. on to speak about

  317. the mystery

  318. that's now revealed

  319. but he now goes

  320. on to speak about

  321. the riches

  322. of the glory

  323. of this revealed

  324. mystery and that's

  325. really adding

  326. another layer

  327. of teaching for us.

  328. Here he is

  329. and he's saying

  330. God has already

  331. revealed this

  332. to his saints.

  333. There are people

  334. who were Gentiles

  335. who did not belong

  336. to Israel

  337. but now have

  338. the same privileges

  339. and indeed now

  340. understand more fully

  341. than ever before

  342. the plan of God

  343. and how it involved

  344. Jew and Gentile alike.

  345. One church,

  346. one salvation,

  347. one God,

  348. one saviour.

  349. But what does he mean

  350. here by the glory

  351. of this mystery?

  352. He's not just saying

  353. he has revealed

  354. this mystery

  355. and he's saying

  356. to them God

  357. chose to make known

  358. how great

  359. among the Gentiles

  360. are the riches

  361. of the glory

  362. of this mystery

  363. which is Christ

  364. in you

  365. the hope

  366. of glory.

  367. Christ

  368. in you

  369. is the heart

  370. of this

  371. mystery,

  372. this revealed

  373. will and plan

  374. of God

  375. but there are

  376. riches to that,

  377. riches of the glory

  378. of this mystery,

  379. a glory

  380. to this mystery,

  381. there's a glory

  382. to it because

  383. Christ is central

  384. to it

  385. because it's the

  386. person of Jesus

  387. that stands

  388. absolutely foursquare

  389. in the middle

  390. of all of this,

  391. everything revolves

  392. around him,

  393. everything's based

  394. upon him

  395. but he's now saying

  396. the riches

  397. of this glory

  398. is Christ

  399. in you

  400. the hope

  401. of glory.

  402. Now Paul as you know

  403. more often

  404. than not uses

  405. to be in Christ

  406. is a more

  407. frequent phrase

  408. in his usage

  409. than for Christ

  410. to be in his people.

  411. To be in Christ

  412. is to be saved.

  413. But here he's talking

  414. about the other side

  415. of things,

  416. Christ

  417. in you.

  418. You go to the likes

  419. of Galatians,

  420. remember that wonderful

  421. passage

  422. where Paul

  423. deals similarly

  424. with Christ

  425. in you

  426. or Christ

  427. in him,

  428. Galatians 2

  429. and verse 20

  430. where he says

  431. there through the law

  432. I died to the law

  433. that I might live

  434. to God,

  435. I have been crucified

  436. with Christ,

  437. it is no longer

  438. I who live

  439. but Christ

  440. who lives

  441. in me

  442. and the life

  443. I now live

  444. in the flesh

  445. I live

  446. by the faith

  447. in the Son of God

  448. who loved me

  449. and gave himself for me.

  450. It's no longer

  451. I who lives

  452. but Christ

  453. who lives in me.

  454. whatever else

  455. that means,

  456. it means that the life,

  457. the spiritual life

  458. that Paul possesses

  459. that has come about

  460. through the knowledge

  461. of Christ,

  462. through Christ's blessing

  463. of him

  464. is now

  465. Christ

  466. in him

  467. is at the center

  468. of this

  469. spiritual life

  470. that he possesses.

  471. That's through everyone

  472. here tonight

  473. and it's an amazing thing,

  474. it's an astounding thing

  475. in itself.

  476. You'll find that Paul

  477. also prays

  478. for example

  479. to the Ephesians

  480. for the Ephesians

  481. rather

  482. in chapter 3

  483. verse 17

  484. of the letter

  485. to the Ephesians

  486. and it's

  487. praying that Christ

  488. may dwell

  489. in your hearts

  490. through faith

  491. that you being

  492. rooted and grounded

  493. in love

  494. may have strength

  495. to comprehend

  496. with all the saints

  497. what is the breadth

  498. and length

  499. and depth

  500. and height

  501. and to know

  502. the love of Christ

  503. that surpasses knowledge

  504. that you may be filled

  505. with all the fullness

  506. of God

  507. but you notice there

  508. he's saying

  509. that Christ

  510. may dwell

  511. in your hearts

  512. through faith.

  513. This is what he's

  514. praying for

  515. for these Ephesians

  516. same for the Colossians

  517. here he's saying

  518. this is the mystery

  519. this is the glory

  520. of this mystery

  521. how great among

  522. the Gentiles

  523. is

  524. are the riches

  525. of this glory

  526. which is Christ

  527. in you.

  528. which is the greater

  529. privilege do you think

  530. that we should be found

  531. in Christ

  532. or that Christ

  533. should live

  534. in us

  535. well they're both

  536. I would think

  537. on the same level

  538. the one's

  539. impossible

  540. without the other

  541. isn't it

  542. it can't be

  543. in Christ

  544. without

  545. through the Holy Spirit

  546. Christ taking up

  547. residence

  548. in us

  549. in his heart

  550. in each of us

  551. believing

  552. people

  553. not just

  554. amongst his people

  555. as a gathered group

  556. or as a church

  557. this is talking about

  558. Christ in us

  559. Christ in each one of us

  560. Christ actually

  561. occupying

  562. the life of his people

  563. the soul

  564. of his people

  565. that's the astounding

  566. truth that's set

  567. before us

  568. similar to the way

  569. that

  570. Jesus himself

  571. taught in John 14

  572. that

  573. the father

  574. and himself

  575. would come

  576. and take up

  577. residence

  578. or make their

  579. abode

  580. with the person

  581. who believed

  582. in Christ

  583. who kept

  584. his word

  585. and that's

  586. one of the things

  587. I for one

  588. fail really

  589. so often

  590. even to think

  591. about properly

  592. to dwell my mind

  593. upon properly

  594. the great

  595. privilege

  596. that it is

  597. both to be

  598. found in Christ

  599. and to have

  600. Christ in us

  601. to have Jesus

  602. occupying

  603. your own life

  604. as a place

  605. in which he dwells

  606. as a home

  607. that he has made

  608. for himself

  609. that's really

  610. what he's saying

  611. to these Colossians

  612. you know he's saying

  613. don't feel

  614. in any way

  615. inferior

  616. to the false

  617. teachers

  618. don't feel inferior

  619. or as if something

  620. is absent

  621. from your life

  622. when they say

  623. you've not yet

  624. quite made it

  625. however much

  626. you feel

  627. about yourself

  628. however much

  629. you're still aware

  630. of your sins

  631. how much

  632. you're aware

  633. of your failings

  634. how much

  635. you're aware

  636. of how far

  637. you have to go

  638. as far as you

  639. can see

  640. in terms of

  641. your holiness

  642. of life

  643. Paul is saying

  644. to you

  645. think about this

  646. from the moment

  647. that you're in Christ

  648. by faith

  649. Christ in you

  650. is the hope

  651. of glory

  652. his home

  653. is in your heart

  654. you're not inferior

  655. to any false

  656. teacher

  657. or any heretic

  658. that's out there

  659. that suggests

  660. you haven't yet

  661. made it

  662. you're complete

  663. in him

  664. and the complete

  665. Jesus

  666. is in you

  667. it's so important

  668. to hang on to that

  669. against all

  670. that would tend

  671. to contradict

  672. it or want

  673. to contradict

  674. it in your own

  675. experience as well

  676. and you know

  677. he's saying here

  678. the riches

  679. of the glory

  680. of this mystery

  681. well this mystery

  682. this plan

  683. of salvation

  684. has a glory

  685. to it

  686. and a glory

  687. of course

  688. is Christ himself

  689. Christ in you

  690. the hope of glory

  691. Christ himself

  692. is central

  693. to the glory

  694. of this salvation

  695. as something glorious

  696. and something

  697. in which glory

  698. has such a basic part

  699. the Old Testament

  700. you remember

  701. had its own

  702. presence of God

  703. above the mercy seat

  704. within the Holy of Holies

  705. in the tabernacle

  706. in the sanctuary

  707. in the temple

  708. then afterwards

  709. and

  710. the privilege

  711. was given

  712. to the high priest

  713. alone

  714. to go into

  715. the Holy of Holies

  716. once a year

  717. the folks

  718. on the outside

  719. couldn't see

  720. the cloud

  721. the shekinah cloud

  722. the glory cloud

  723. above

  724. the mercy seat

  725. in the Holy of Holies

  726. they knew

  727. it was there

  728. they were meant

  729. to value

  730. that presence

  731. as the very indication

  732. of God

  733. being amongst them

  734. God

  735. in you

  736. you might say

  737. in the Old Testament

  738. the hope of glory

  739. the hope

  740. anticipating the coming

  741. of the Lord

  742. well here it is

  743. it is Christ in you

  744. the hope of glory

  745. the one who came

  746. and tabernacled

  747. among us

  748. and we beheld

  749. as glorious

  750. John said

  751. the glory

  752. of the only begotten

  753. of the Father

  754. full of grace

  755. and truth

  756. that's the glory

  757. that's the glory

  758. centrally

  759. in the New Testament

  760. church

  761. that's the glory

  762. centrally

  763. in the plan

  764. and the scheme

  765. of God's salvation

  766. but you see

  767. it's in you

  768. it is in you

  769. this Christ

  770. is in you

  771. and as Christ

  772. is in you

  773. so in you

  774. is the hope

  775. of glory

  776. and I think

  777. Paul is

  778. counteracting

  779. an idea

  780. that may have been

  781. we can't be sure

  782. exactly what the form

  783. of this false teaching

  784. was but

  785. it looks as if

  786. there was some

  787. kind of perfectionism

  788. about it

  789. that they've already

  790. made it

  791. and we're saying

  792. to these

  793. genuine Christians

  794. in Colossae

  795. you really haven't

  796. quite made it yet

  797. you're not like us

  798. but Paul is saying

  799. well

  800. it's not yet glory

  801. for those

  802. who are in Christ

  803. yes they are

  804. complete in him

  805. they're accepted

  806. in him

  807. but it's not yet

  808. glory for them

  809. glory is still

  810. to come

  811. and it doesn't

  812. belong to this

  813. world

  814. belongs to the

  815. state of glory

  816. to the next

  817. world

  818. to heaven

  819. and Paul is

  820. saying

  821. the hope

  822. of that

  823. the hope

  824. of glory

  825. is Christ

  826. in you

  827. and the Christ

  828. in you

  829. is the one

  830. in whom

  831. all the riches

  832. of God's

  833. salvation

  834. already dwell

  835. and he's in you

  836. he's in your heart

  837. he's in your soul

  838. you have him

  839. he resides

  840. there

  841. no one can

  842. take him

  843. from you

  844. how rich

  845. are Christians

  846. how rich

  847. is your

  848. very special

  849. salvation

  850. how rich

  851. are you

  852. in Christ

  853. well

  854. you are as rich

  855. as Paul is saying

  856. here

  857. the riches

  858. of the glory

  859. of this mystery

  860. which is Christ

  861. in you

  862. the hope

  863. of glory

  864. it's not yet

  865. possession

  866. of glory

  867. but it very much

  868. is a promise

  869. of it

  870. that's secure

  871. because as Christ

  872. is already

  873. in the hearts

  874. of his people

  875. so that itself

  876. is the guarantee

  877. that his people

  878. will yet be

  879. fully with him

  880. glorified

  881. together with him

  882. but you see

  883. thirdly

  884. I want to just

  885. mention this

  886. before we finish

  887. it's not just

  888. the mystery

  889. that's now

  890. revealed

  891. that had been

  892. hidden

  893. and it's not

  894. just the riches

  895. of the glory

  896. of this mystery

  897. which is Christ

  898. in you

  899. the hope

  900. of glory

  901. he also talks

  902. about this

  903. glory

  904. being presently

  905. active

  906. in our present

  907. sufferings

  908. because all the

  909. way through

  910. here

  911. in this

  912. epistle

  913. he talks

  914. about

  915. the sufferings

  916. that are being

  917. endured

  918. by those

  919. Christians

  920. in Colossae

  921. and

  922. it's important

  923. that that

  924. hope

  925. that we

  926. possess

  927. the hope

  928. of glory

  929. Christ

  930. in us

  931. is active

  932. now

  933. in this

  934. world

  935. in which

  936. we face

  937. tribulations

  938. and it's

  939. right to say

  940. that

  941. the sufferings

  942. of God's

  943. people

  944. of the saints

  945. of God

  946. are unique

  947. now that

  948. doesn't mean

  949. that other

  950. people don't

  951. go through

  952. the same

  953. kind

  954. of sufferings

  955. but it

  956. does mean

  957. no other

  958. people have

  959. these sufferings

  960. given such

  961. a place

  962. in their

  963. experience

  964. as God

  965. gives to

  966. them

  967. because he

  968. uses them

  969. towards their

  970. final glory

  971. and that's

  972. not true

  973. of anyone

  974. that isn't

  975. a saint

  976. in Christ

  977. and a

  978. saved

  979. sinner

  980. in Christ

  981. and that's

  982. why Paul

  983. is saying

  984. that he's

  985. rejoicing in

  986. my sufferings

  987. for your

  988. sake

  989. and

  990. in verse

  991. 24

  992. we already

  993. saw in

  994. Philippians

  995. for example

  996. how Paul

  997. can rejoice

  998. even in

  999. prison

  1000. as he's

  1001. writing to

  1002. the Philippians

  1003. you have

  1004. the same

  1005. here

  1006. in the

  1007. epistle

  1008. to the

  1009. Colossians

  1010. as well

  1011. how can

  1012. he say

  1013. he's

  1014. rejoicing

  1015. what does

  1016. rejoicing

  1017. mean in

  1018. those

  1019. circumstances

  1020. well it

  1021. does mean

  1022. an element

  1023. of gladness

  1024. or happiness

  1025. if you like

  1026. but you

  1027. must never

  1028. leave it

  1029. at that

  1030. level

  1031. because

  1032. when Paul

  1033. uses this

  1034. word

  1035. rejoicing

  1036. as he

  1037. is here

  1038. there is

  1039. built into

  1040. it an

  1041. element

  1042. of

  1043. confidence

  1044. an element

  1045. of a

  1046. sense of

  1047. security

  1048. in Christ

  1049. if you

  1050. like

  1051. I rejoice

  1052. in my

  1053. suffering

  1054. for you

  1055. sake

  1056. he's

  1057. able to

  1058. say

  1059. I

  1060. have a

  1061. sense

  1062. of

  1063. security

  1064. through

  1065. these

  1066. sufferings

  1067. because

  1068. they're

  1069. part

  1070. of

  1071. the

  1072. sufferings

  1073. of

  1074. God's

  1075. people

  1076. and as

  1077. I belong

  1078. to that

  1079. group of

  1080. God's

  1081. people

  1082. I understand

  1083. he's saying

  1084. that my

  1085. sufferings

  1086. and your

  1087. sufferings

  1088. are not

  1089. different

  1090. in many

  1091. respects to

  1092. what God's

  1093. people have

  1094. always gone

  1095. through

  1096. and you

  1097. see this

  1098. amazing

  1099. phrase

  1100. he's

  1101. using

  1102. I

  1103. rejoice

  1104. in my

  1105. sufferings

  1106. I have

  1107. confidence

  1108. in my

  1109. sufferings

  1110. and in

  1111. my flesh

  1112. I'm

  1113. filling up

  1114. what is

  1115. lacking

  1116. in

  1117. Christ's

  1118. afflictions

  1119. for the

  1120. sake of

  1121. his body

  1122. that is

  1123. the church

  1124. now how

  1125. can he

  1126. say I

  1127. am

  1128. filling up

  1129. what is

  1130. lacking

  1131. in

  1132. Christ's

  1133. afflictions

  1134. what is

  1135. lacking

  1136. in

  1137. Christ's

  1138. affliction

  1139. how can

  1140. he mean

  1141. something

  1142. is lacking

  1143. when he's

  1144. talking about

  1145. the afflictions

  1146. the suffering

  1147. of Jesus

  1148. himself

  1149. but you

  1150. see he's

  1151. saying here

  1152. he's taking

  1153. Christ

  1154. and the

  1155. church to

  1156. be one

  1157. entity

  1158. his body

  1159. he's the

  1160. head

  1161. his people

  1162. are his

  1163. body

  1164. spiritually

  1165. and what

  1166. he's saying

  1167. here is

  1168. that that

  1169. one

  1170. entity

  1171. that one

  1172. a body

  1173. and a

  1174. head

  1175. together

  1176. have

  1177. if you

  1178. like

  1179. a

  1180. totality

  1181. of

  1182. suffering

  1183. allocated

  1184. to them

  1185. over the

  1186. course of

  1187. time

  1188. in other

  1189. words you

  1190. can't take

  1191. the

  1192. sufferings

  1193. of Christ

  1194. out of

  1195. the

  1196. sufferings

  1197. of his

  1198. people

  1199. altogether

  1200. neither

  1201. can you

  1202. take the

  1203. suffering

  1204. of his

  1205. people

  1206. as detached

  1207. from the

  1208. sufferings

  1209. of Jesus

  1210. so what

  1211. he's saying

  1212. is there

  1213. are still

  1214. some

  1215. afflictions

  1216. and will

  1217. be to

  1218. the end

  1219. of time

  1220. that will

  1221. be added

  1222. to what

  1223. the church

  1224. along with

  1225. Christ

  1226. the head

  1227. has already

  1228. suffered

  1229. and experienced

  1230. and when

  1231. that totality

  1232. is complete

  1233. the sufferings

  1234. of Christ

  1235. and his

  1236. people

  1237. together

  1238. the sufferings

  1239. of

  1240. what is

  1241. lacking

  1242. in Christ's

  1243. affliction

  1244. that is to

  1245. say the

  1246. church

  1247. will be

  1248. complete

  1249. in other

  1250. words

  1251. Paul is

  1252. using the

  1253. word

  1254. Christ

  1255. really

  1256. essentially

  1257. for the

  1258. church

  1259. itself

  1260. as

  1261. connected

  1262. to

  1263. Jesus

  1264. and all

  1265. through the

  1266. course of

  1267. time

  1268. there are

  1269. certain

  1270. afflictions

  1271. that belong

  1272. to the

  1273. church

  1274. as united

  1275. to Christ

  1276. joined to

  1277. his afflictions

  1278. as well

  1279. and Paul

  1280. is saying

  1281. that's why

  1282. I rejoice

  1283. in my

  1284. sufferings

  1285. for your

  1286. sake

  1287. because I

  1288. recognize

  1289. this is

  1290. what the

  1291. sufferings

  1292. belong

  1293. to

  1294. this is

  1295. the entity

  1296. that these

  1297. sufferings

  1298. are part

  1299. of

  1300. and therefore

  1301. I can

  1302. say

  1303. that I

  1304. rejoice

  1305. in them

  1306. that I'm

  1307. confident

  1308. that they

  1309. belong to

  1310. the saved

  1311. people of

  1312. God

  1313. so there's

  1314. the mystery

  1315. it's been

  1316. revealed

  1317. we know

  1318. what it

  1319. is

  1320. it is

  1321. that

  1322. the

  1323. Gentiles

  1324. along with

  1325. Jews

  1326. make up

  1327. the church

  1328. of God

  1329. it's not

  1330. the church

  1331. of the

  1332. Jews

  1333. and the

  1334. church

  1335. of the

  1336. Gentiles

  1337. it's

  1338. God's

  1339. church

  1340. of Jew

  1341. and Gentile

  1342. together

  1343. Ephesians

  1344. 2

  1345. has that

  1346. even more

  1347. graphically

  1348. portrayed

  1349. but the

  1350. riches

  1351. of the

  1352. glory

  1353. of this

  1354. mystery

  1355. the

  1356. wonderful

  1357. riches

  1358. that belong

  1359. to being

  1360. in Christ

  1361. to being

  1362. the people

  1363. of God

  1364. and how

  1365. that is

  1366. experienced

  1367. presently

  1368. in our

  1369. present

  1370. sufferings

  1371. and through

  1372. them

  1373. we

  1374. come

  1375. to

  1376. rejoice

  1377. to

  1378. have

  1379. confidence

  1380. that as

  1381. far as

  1382. God is

  1383. concerned

  1384. and what

  1385. God is

  1386. doing

  1387. it's all

  1388. part

  1389. of his

  1390. great

  1391. plan

  1392. of

  1393. redemption

  1394. God bless

  1395. these

  1396. thoughts

  1397. on his

  1398. word

  1399. now let's

  1400. conclude
