  1. Well, begin our worship this evening.

  2. We're going to sing to God's praise in Psalm 116,

  3. the Scottish Psalter version on page 395 of the Psalm books.

  4. Psalm 116, page 395.

  5. We're going to sing from the beginning of the Psalm

  6. down to the verse marked eight.

  7. I love the Lord because my voice and prayers he did hear.

  8. I, while I live, will call on him who bowed to me his ear.

  9. Of death the chords and sorrows did about me compass round.

  10. The pains of hell took hold on me, I grief and trouble found.

  11. We'll sing from verse one to verse eight to God's praise

  12. and we stand to sing.

  13. I love the Lord because my voice

  14. and where she did hear.

  15. My wife, I live with all of him who bowed to me his ear.

  16. Of death the chords and sorrows did about me compass round.

  17. The pains of hell took hold on me, I grief and trouble found.

  18. Upon the name of God the Lord.

  19. Then did I call and say,

  20. He delivered the Lord.

  21. He delivered the Lord.

  22. My soul, O Lord.

  23. I do the humbling praise.

  24. God merciful and righteousness.

  25. He gracious is our Lord.

  26. God merciful and sorrows did about me, I was brought home.

  27. He did be held upon.

  28. God merciful and sorrows did about me, I was brought home.

  29. He sang to me, I was brought home to God.

  30. In thy quiet rest

  31. For God's below

  32. The Lord to thee

  33. His bounty hath expressed

  34. For my distress

  35. And soul from death

  36. Delivered caused by thee

  37. Thou gives my pouring eyes

  38. From tears, my feet

  39. Of falling free

  40. We'll come to God in prayer.

  41. Let us pray.

  42. Our gracious Father in heaven,

  43. as we come to offer up our praise

  44. to you and you this evening,

  45. we thank you for the words

  46. which we have shared

  47. in praise to you

  48. that we can come

  49. echoing the words of the psalmist

  50. that we can love you

  51. because you have heard

  52. our voice and our prayer.

  53. And we thank you

  54. that your promise is

  55. that you will always hear your people,

  56. that your ear is towards

  57. all who call upon you.

  58. And we thank you

  59. that there is such a great privilege

  60. in prayer,

  61. such a blessing to us

  62. to know that in our needs

  63. and in our helplessness

  64. that you are a God

  65. who hears

  66. and is always there for us.

  67. We thank you

  68. that as we look through the psalms

  69. we see the great experience

  70. of the variety of psalmists

  71. and the positions

  72. and situations

  73. that they found themselves in.

  74. And so often, Lord,

  75. we recognize ourselves in them,

  76. whether it's going astray

  77. and away from you,

  78. whether it's in times

  79. of sorrow and distress,

  80. whether it's in times

  81. of questioning

  82. and uncertainty,

  83. or whether it's in times

  84. of great rejoicing and praise.

  85. We thank you

  86. that our experiences

  87. are echoed

  88. in these words so often.

  89. And we pray tonight, Lord,

  90. that we will enter in

  91. to these words

  92. and to the experience of them,

  93. that we will hear

  94. your words speaking to us,

  95. that you are the one

  96. who is able to deliver us

  97. and to give us

  98. great rest for our soul.

  99. We thank you

  100. that there is that reminder

  101. that we are a people

  102. who are perishing,

  103. for we are a sinful people.

  104. We are living

  105. in the midst

  106. of a sinful world,

  107. and our hearts are wicked

  108. beyond all

  109. that we could imagine.

  110. But we thank you

  111. that your word reminds us

  112. that you have sent your son

  113. into this world

  114. because of our sin,

  115. that he came

  116. to save us

  117. from our sin.

  118. And we thank you

  119. that your word

  120. is a word of hope,

  121. a word of hope

  122. even in our most troubled times.

  123. So we pray

  124. that you will bless

  125. your word to us

  126. together this evening,

  127. and indeed bless it to us

  128. in this week ahead as well

  129. as we look forward

  130. with a sense

  131. of anticipation

  132. and prayerful preparations

  133. as we will come,

  134. God willing,

  135. to prepare ourselves

  136. for the Lord's Supper

  137. and all being well

  138. to partake in it

  139. next week.

  140. We thank you, Lord,

  141. for these seasons

  142. and for being able

  143. to meet once again

  144. in this way

  145. after a period

  146. when things have been

  147. so different.

  148. And we pray

  149. that there will be

  150. a sense of urgency

  151. and longing

  152. for us to meet

  153. with you

  154. in the midst

  155. of your word

  156. and sacrament.

  157. And so we pray

  158. that you will help us

  159. to prepare our hearts

  160. for it,

  161. to prayerfully approach

  162. each day of the week

  163. and pray for the services

  164. to take place.

  165. Your word preached

  166. and those who will preach,

  167. preach your word to us

  168. in our fellowship together.

  169. And in your people's hearts,

  170. Lord,

  171. may you encourage us

  172. and build us up.

  173. May you draw people

  174. to yourself.

  175. May you help those

  176. even now

  177. who may be wondering

  178. of what they should do

  179. of coming to the Lord's table,

  180. feeling unworthy,

  181. feeling unprepared,

  182. feeling undeserving

  183. of the least

  184. of your mercies.

  185. But yet that's the way

  186. we all come.

  187. We recognize

  188. we do not deserve

  189. it in and of ourselves,

  190. but that we are

  191. to look to Jesus,

  192. the one who took our place,

  193. the one whose death

  194. we come to remember,

  195. the one who we can trust in,

  196. the one who we can

  197. put all our hope in,

  198. for he has done

  199. all that we could not.

  200. And so we pray

  201. that you will encourage us

  202. all in our hearts

  203. to hear and see

  204. of the wonder of Jesus Christ,

  205. the one who died

  206. for our sins,

  207. but greater than that,

  208. who rose again,

  209. and whoever lives

  210. making intercession

  211. for us even now

  212. at the right hand

  213. of God the Father.

  214. So as we come

  215. in our prayers,

  216. we come in his name,

  217. seeking your goodness

  218. and mercy upon us

  219. and seeking your blessing

  220. on us as a church

  221. and as a church

  222. throughout the world,

  223. as your people

  224. gather in your name

  225. throughout this day.

  226. We pray, Lord,

  227. that your kingdom

  228. will be blessed,

  229. that you will be

  230. bringing many sinners

  231. into repentance

  232. and into salvation,

  233. into your kingdom.

  234. We pray, Lord,

  235. that you will continue

  236. to pour out

  237. your blessing upon us

  238. as a nation

  239. at this time,

  240. undeserving as we are,

  241. yet still we see

  242. your hand upon us.

  243. We see your hand upon us

  244. in teaching

  245. and rebuking,

  246. but we see your hand upon us

  247. in encouragement as well,

  248. that there are people

  249. who are seeking after you,

  250. that there are those

  251. who in the midst

  252. of some of the greatest turmoil

  253. maybe we've ever experienced

  254. in our own lives,

  255. who are looking to you

  256. and recognizing

  257. how frail a people we are,

  258. but how great a God you are.

  259. And so we pray

  260. that as you continue

  261. to teach us

  262. many hard lessons,

  263. that we will recognize

  264. your grace and your love

  265. and your mercy towards us,

  266. and that if we as a nation

  267. would repent and turn

  268. and seek you as our God

  269. and as our Lord,

  270. what a blessing that would be

  271. and the blessing that would be ours

  272. poured out from heaven.

  273. So, Lord, we pray

  274. that you will rule over us

  275. in the midst of these days,

  276. rule over those

  277. who are our nation's rulers,

  278. that they would recognize

  279. that they must bow the knee

  280. before you,

  281. give wisdom and guidance

  282. to all who would seek

  283. to lead us

  284. in every aspect of life,

  285. be it in our governments,

  286. in our councils,

  287. in any line of work

  288. where there are decisions

  289. that affect us

  290. as a nation

  291. and as a people.

  292. We pray, Lord,

  293. for your mercy and grace

  294. when we think of

  295. the trying times

  296. we face in terms of

  297. financial crisis

  298. and pressures upon people.

  299. We pray, Lord,

  300. that the hearts of those

  301. who are so often greedy

  302. for more,

  303. although they have so much,

  304. it's never enough

  305. and no matter

  306. the consequences of others,

  307. they seem to just want more.

  308. We pray, Lord,

  309. that you will change

  310. the hearts that are greedy

  311. for financial gain

  312. in this world

  313. to hearts that are filled

  314. with mercy,

  315. hearts that will show favor

  316. and help

  317. and kindness

  318. towards others.

  319. We know, Lord,

  320. we live in a world

  321. where we so often hear it said,

  322. the rich are getting richer

  323. and the poor are getting poorer.

  324. But we know that

  325. to know Christ

  326. and to have him

  327. would be to make us rich

  328. beyond all comparison.

  329. So we pray for

  330. rich and poor,

  331. young and old,

  332. everyone to come

  333. to know and to understand

  334. the love of Christ,

  335. that love that is beyond

  336. all comparison.

  337. So we pray, Lord,

  338. your mercy upon us

  339. and we pray, Lord,

  340. that you will go before us

  341. in this week ahead

  342. as well as we look forward

  343. to the time of communion season

  344. in our midst.

  345. We pray your blessing

  346. on all the services

  347. that will take place

  348. and upon every preacher

  349. who will minister in our midst.

  350. May you help them

  351. as they prepare

  352. for the services

  353. in these coming days.

  354. We pray for each of them, Lord,

  355. that you will bless them

  356. and use them to your glory

  357. and for our blessing here.

  358. We pray for Reverend

  359. Kenneth Ferguson

  360. for the Thursday evening service.

  361. We thank you

  362. for his years of ministry

  363. and his willingness

  364. to serve in so many ways.

  365. We pray that you will bless

  366. that time around your word there.

  367. We pray for Emma Critchie

  368. and Paul Murray

  369. as they come on the Friday evening.

  370. May you bless them

  371. and use them too.

  372. We pray for Reverend

  373. James McKeever

  374. and Reverend Colin McLeod too

  375. as they minister

  376. over the weekend

  377. and the sacrament

  378. of the Lord's Supper.

  379. May you bless them, Lord,

  380. and encourage them.

  381. And may we be ever

  382. prayerful towards them.

  383. We thank you

  384. that even in this past week,

  385. Mr. McKeever

  386. has celebrated 35 years

  387. in the ministry.

  388. We pray you'll continue

  389. to bless him

  390. in his ministry here

  391. and further afield as well.

  392. Thanking you

  393. for the congregations

  394. he's been in in the past,

  395. for East Kilbride

  396. and for Point.

  397. And we pray for the congregation

  398. here as well,

  399. Lord,

  400. and his ministry here.

  401. May you bless each one

  402. and may you continue

  403. to help us

  404. to know your goodness

  405. with us

  406. all the days of our lives.

  407. So we continue

  408. to seek your face now

  409. as we worship you

  410. and as we turn to your word,

  411. as we sing your praise.

  412. May you draw near to us

  413. as we seek

  414. to draw near to you.

  415. We ask all things,

  416. confessing our sins

  417. before you anew,

  418. that we are a people

  419. who fall short

  420. of your glory,

  421. who sin daily

  422. in thought,

  423. word,

  424. and in deed.

  425. But we thank you

  426. that in Christ

  427. there is rich forgiveness.

  428. So we come

  429. confessing anew

  430. and looking to him,

  431. asking for your mercy

  432. upon us as a people,

  433. that you'll go with us now.

  434. We ask all in Jesus' name

  435. and for his sake.

  436. Amen.

  437. We're going to sing again

  438. to God's praise,

  439. this time in Psalm 139

  440. in the Scottish Psalter.

  441. Psalm 139 on page 432.

  442. We're going to sing

  443. from verse 1

  444. down to verse 10.

  445. O Lord,

  446. thou hast me searched

  447. and known,

  448. thou knowest

  449. my sitting down

  450. and rising up.

  451. Yea, all my thoughts

  452. afar to thee are known,

  453. my footsteps

  454. and my lying down

  455. thou compassest always.

  456. Thou also most entirely

  457. art acquaint

  458. with all my ways.

  459. We'll sing

  460. from verse 1 to 10

  461. to God's praise

  462. and we stand to sing.

  463. Amen.

  464. O Lord,

  465. thou hast me searched,

  466. and thus,

  467. anche onen of the nations

  468. and endure his name

  469. again.

  470. I have come to autre

  471. the star of 632.

  472. If one of the nations

  473. или reach,

  474. or 100% of the nations

  475. may have come to Thee

  476. and above the nations

  477. and where he hailed

  478. of mine as I know.

  479. I have come to say

  480. though God isMI

  481. above us will.

  482. Our Lord

  483. My footsteps

  484. And my lying

  485. God

  486. Thou God

  487. Passest always

  488. Thou also

  489. Holds

  490. My entire

  491. Yard

  492. I'll wait

  493. With all my

  494. Ways

  495. For in

  496. My tongue

  497. Before

  498. I speak

  499. Not any

  500. Work

  501. Can be

  502. But

  503. All

  504. Together

  505. O

  506. Lord

  507. It is

  508. Well

  509. Long to

  510. Thee

  511. Behind

  512. Before

  513. The

  514. Past

  515. We

  516. And

  517. And

  518. Live

  519. On

  520. Thee

  521. Thee

  522. Thee

  523. Thee

  524. Thee

  525. Thee

  526. Thee

  527. Thee

  528. From

  529. Thy

  530. Sand

  531. Thine

  532. Thee

  533. From

  534. Thy

  535. Thee

  536. Thee

  537. Thee

  538. Thee

  539. Thee

  540. Thee

  541. Thee

  542. There is in hell I lie.

  543. Take I the morning wings and dwell

  544. in utmost parts of sea.

  545. In heaven, Lord, shall thy hand be me,

  546. thy right hand hold shall be.

  547. If we could turn together now, we'll read in God's word

  548. in the beginning of the Old Testament in the book of Genesis.

  549. I'm reading in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  550. I'm going to read the whole of this chapter.

  551. Genesis chapter 3 and the whole of this chapter.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  552. Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field

  553. that the Lord God had made.

  554. He said to the woman,

  555. Did God actually say,

  556. You shall not eat of any tree in the garden?

  557. And the woman said to the serpent,

  558. We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden,

  559. but God said,

  560. You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree

  561. that is in the midst of the garden,

  562. neither shall you touch it,

  563. lest you die.

  564. But the serpent said to the woman,

  565. You will not surely die,

  566. for God knows that when you eat of it,

  567. your eyes will be opened,

  568. and you will be like God,

  569. knowing good and evil.

  570. So when the woman saw that the tree

  571. was good for food,

  572. and that it was a delight to the eyes,

  573. and that the tree was to be desired

  574. to make one wise,

  575. she took out its fruit and ate.

  576. And she also gave some to her husband,

  577. who was with her,

  578. and he ate.

  579. And the eyes of both were opened,

  580. and they knew that they were naked,

  581. and they sewed fig leaves together

  582. and made themselves loincloths.

  583. And they heard the sound of the Lord God

  584. walking in the garden in the cool of the day.

  585. And the man and his wife hid themselves

  586. from the presence of the Lord God

  587. among the trees of the garden.

  588. But the Lord God called to the man

  589. and said to him,

  590. Where are you?

  591. And he said,

  592. I heard the sound of you in the garden,

  593. and I was afraid,

  594. because I was naked,

  595. and I hid myself.

  596. He said,

  597. Who told you that you were naked?

  598. Have you eaten of the tree

  599. of which I commanded you not to eat?

  600. The man said,

  601. The woman whom you gave to me

  602. to be with me,

  603. she gave me fruit of the tree,

  604. and I ate.

  605. Then the Lord said to the woman,

  606. What is this that you have done?

  607. The woman said,

  608. The serpent deceived me,

  609. and I ate.

  610. The Lord God said to the serpent,

  611. Because you have done this,

  612. cursed are you above all livestock,

  613. and above all beasts of the field.

  614. On your belly you shall go,

  615. and dust you shall eat

  616. all the days of your life.

  617. I will put enmity between you and the woman,

  618. between your offspring and her offspring.

  619. He shall bruise your head,

  620. and you shall bruise his heel.

  621. To the woman he said,

  622. I will surely multiply your pain

  623. and childbearing.

  624. In pain you shall bring forth children.

  625. Your desire shall be for your husband,

  626. and he shall rule over you.

  627. And to Adam he said,

  628. Because you have listened to the voice of your wife,

  629. and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you,

  630. you shall not eat of it.

  631. Cursed is the ground because of you.

  632. In pain you shall eat of it

  633. all the days of your life.

  634. Thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you,

  635. and you shall eat the plants of the field.

  636. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread,

  637. till you return to the ground.

  638. For out of it you were taken,

  639. for you are dust,

  640. and to dust you shall return.

  641. The man called his wife's name Eve,

  642. because she was the mother of all living.

  643. And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife

  644. garments of skins and clothed them.

  645. And the Lord God said,

  646. Behold, the man has become like one of us

  647. in knowing good and evil.

  648. Now lest he reach out his hand

  649. and take also the tree of life

  650. and eat and live forever.

  651. Therefore the Lord God sent him out

  652. from the garden of Eden

  653. to work the ground from which he was taken.

  654. He drove out the man,

  655. and at the east of the garden of Eden

  656. he placed the cherubim

  657. and a flaming sword that turned every way

  658. to guard the way to the tree of life.

  659. So I want to make God bless

  660. that reading from his word.

  661. Before we turn back to that passage,

  662. we'll again sing to God's praise this time

  663. in the Singed Psalms version of Psalm 56.

  664. Psalm 56.

  665. We find this on page 73.

  666. We're singing from verse 1 to verse 9.

  667. Oh my God, show mercy to me.

  668. Men would take my life away.

  669. Hostile forces press upon me.

  670. They pursue me all the day.

  671. Slanderers are close behind me.

  672. They pursue me all day long.

  673. In their arrogance they hound me.

  674. They are numerous and strong.

  675. We'll sing from verse 1 to verse 9.

  676. To God's praise and we stand to sing.

  677. O my God, your mercy to me.

  678. Men would take my life away.

  679. All sad forces press upon me.

  680. They pursue me all day long.

  681. All day long.

  682. All day long.

  683. All day long.

  684. They are numerous and strong.

  685. When they are no guards without me.

  686. They are numerous and strong.

  687. They are numerous and strong.

  688. When they are no guards without me.

  689. They are numerous and strong.

  690. When I am afraid and trusting.

  691. I will praise your faithful word.

  692. I will trust and not be fearful.

  693. What can man do to me, Lord?

  694. All day long.

  695. All day long.

  696. All day long.

  697. They platter hardly.

  698. Twisting everything I say.

  699. They will praise my heart.

  700. They will praise the Lord.

  701. And I will praise the Lord.

  702. And I will praise the Lord.

  703. And I will praise the Lord.

  704. All day long.

  705. All day long.

  706. To take my life away.

  707. Let them all dishing their anger, ring the nations down, O Lord.

  708. In your hope, write my entreaties, in your scroll my tears record.

  709. When I call on you to help me, then my faults will turn aside.

  710. This is how I will be certain, that my God is on my side.

  711. Amen.

  712. Well, if we can turn together to our reading in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  713. I want us to read again at verse 8.

  714. Genesis chapter 3, reading at verse 8.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  715. And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day.

  716. And the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

  717. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, Where are you?

  718. And so on.

  719. But God willing, this coming week, we look forward to a time of communion season in our midst.

  720. And we come to remember the Lord's death.

  721. But we ask ourselves as we look forward to it, what is it that we are remembering in the Lord's death?

  722. What is the reason for his death?

  723. But we look at ourselves, we examine ourselves, and we turn to Scripture,

  724. and we see what God is saying to us through his word is that we as a people are a fallen people.

  725. That is, that our relationship with God has been marred by sin.

  726. And in order to be made right once again with God,

  727. something had to take place to restore that relationship,

  728. to make right that relationship, a price had to be paid.

  729. And the price that was paid was ultimately that the Lord Jesus came to give his life.

  730. Everything that was foreshadowed in the Old Testament,

  731. where you read through it and you see the whole sacrificial system,

  732. where sacrifices were offered to have forgiveness of sin,

  733. bringing it to the high priest once a year.

  734. We see ultimately that pointing to a Savior who is Christ the Lord.

  735. The way to God was barred to his people,

  736. but a way was opened up once again through the death of the Lord Jesus.

  737. And really it takes us back to the roots here in Genesis,

  738. in Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  739. where we see the coming of sin into the world

  740. and how we are all marred by this sin.

  741. And the way back to God was cut off,

  742. as you see at the end of chapter 3,

  743. where the cherubim were there to protect the way to God.

  744. And then we see that the man was cast out,

  745. cast out of the garden to work the ground in hard toil.

  746. But it's a chapter that reminds us too of the wonder of God's grace.

  747. That God didn't give to them what they deserved,

  748. but that he still showed mercy towards them.

  749. And this is the mercy that is shown to us in Christ Jesus.

  750. That in him we have one who is able still to take away our sins,

  751. to make us right with God.

  752. So as we look at this passage tonight,

  753. I want to think about it in light of one of the questions

  754. that we see in this chapter.

  755. I want to ask ourselves that question this evening.

  756. But first of all, what's the hardest question

  757. you have ever had to answer?

  758. What's the hardest question you've ever had to answer?

  759. We all find ourselves maybe in situations

  760. where we face up to questions,

  761. be it from someone around us

  762. or in a setting that we find ourselves in,

  763. where someone asks us a question.

  764. And we maybe think to yourself,

  765. I'm just not sure how I might answer this question.

  766. There'll be some teenagers in here tonight

  767. or maybe listening in.

  768. And over the last few months,

  769. you've had to sit in a classroom situation,

  770. sitting exams.

  771. And sometimes when you sit in an exam,

  772. you turn over the question sheet

  773. and you look at the question,

  774. you just think to yourself,

  775. oh, I just didn't see that question coming.

  776. I'm just not sure how I'm going to try

  777. and answer that question.

  778. Such a difficult question.

  779. We're always maybe facing up to situations

  780. where we have difficult questions

  781. we have to try and answer.

  782. Well, as we look at this chapter,

  783. we are reminded of one of the most serious questions

  784. that we have to face up to.

  785. And maybe it's a question we've answered in the past.

  786. And maybe you thought,

  787. I'm okay.

  788. I'm fine.

  789. Everything's well in my life.

  790. Everything's going fine.

  791. But then you find yourself coming into a situation

  792. where the Lord begins to open your eyes

  793. and to open your heart.

  794. And as he asks this question again,

  795. you begin to think to yourself,

  796. well, actually,

  797. is everything okay in my life?

  798. Is where I am now,

  799. am I right with God?

  800. Or is there something that needs to change?

  801. What we find in this chapter,

  802. in Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  803. is the account of what is called the fall,

  804. where sin came into the world,

  805. where man's relationship with God

  806. was ruined in a sense.

  807. And yet where God shows mercy.

  808. The shorter Catechson puts it well

  809. when he speaks about

  810. what man entered into

  811. in the beginning with God

  812. is called a covenant.

  813. This relationship,

  814. this bond with God,

  815. and it was called a covenant of life.

  816. And everything was good and well in the garden.

  817. But the covenant had a condition.

  818. And the condition was perfect obedience.

  819. And as you read through chapter 3,

  820. you realize where this obedience was broken.

  821. Where the serpent,

  822. the crafty serpent,

  823. came into the garden with his own questions,

  824. leading them away from God.

  825. And this question that brought them

  826. to a place where they sinned.

  827. They broke God's law.

  828. They broke their covenant relationship with him.

  829. The Catechson again says,

  830. the fall brought mankind

  831. into an estate of sin and misery.

  832. And this chapter alone,

  833. chapter 3,

  834. makes it clear for us

  835. what this misery was.

  836. hard labor,

  837. a relationship ruined with God,

  838. cast out of the garden,

  839. ultimately the pain of death.

  840. It also brought with it

  841. many other difficulties

  842. and trials and temptations.

  843. And they are all things

  844. that we can relate to today as well.

  845. We live in a world

  846. where sin is all around us,

  847. but it's not just out there.

  848. Sin is in here.

  849. Sin is in our heart.

  850. In our own hearts tonight,

  851. there is sin because we sin

  852. daily in thought,

  853. word and deed.

  854. You don't have to think too hard

  855. to think today,

  856. well, how have I sinned?

  857. I'm sure all of us

  858. can immediately just think of ways

  859. we've fallen short,

  860. ways we've sinned,

  861. something we've said,

  862. something we've done,

  863. or more often than not,

  864. something we've thought.

  865. The sins that we think

  866. that nobody else sees,

  867. but God knows.

  868. So what's the solution for us

  869. in this situation

  870. where we think to yourself tonight

  871. and we all think it may be,

  872. well, here I am,

  873. just a miserable sinner,

  874. the chief of sinners

  875. as Paul describes himself.

  876. What can we do?

  877. What's the answer for us?

  878. Well, it's not to keep asking questions

  879. of ourselves.

  880. We can often ask questions

  881. of ourselves,

  882. but it's to hear the questions

  883. that God asks.

  884. And in the midst of the garden setting here,

  885. when Adam and Eve had sinned against God,

  886. when they disobeyed his command,

  887. what happened to them?

  888. They heard the sound of the Lord God.

  889. He was walking in the garden

  890. in the cool of the day

  891. and they hid themselves.

  892. That's not the answer for us.

  893. It wasn't the answer for them,

  894. as we will see.

  895. The answer when we recognize

  896. that we fall short,

  897. when we're sinners,

  898. is not to try and hide ourselves from God,

  899. not to try and push God away,

  900. the answer is to come near to God

  901. and to see that he is a God

  902. that is inviting us in,

  903. inviting us back.

  904. And that is what we see God doing here.

  905. In the midst of everything that's happened,

  906. God comes with this question

  907. that we have in verse 9.

  908. But the Lord God called to the man

  909. and said to him,

  910. Where are you?

  911. And it's that question

  912. I want us to ponder this evening.

  913. It's one of the hardest questions

  914. you'll maybe have to give answer to.

  915. Where are you?

  916. As we remember who is asking that question,

  917. it is God, the Lord.

  918. And there are three things

  919. I want us to take from that question

  920. this evening.

  921. The first is this,

  922. the nature of the question.

  923. Secondly, the nurture of the question.

  924. And thirdly, the need of the question.

  925. So firstly, we see the nature

  926. of this question.

  927. What do we see of this question?

  928. In the nature of it,

  929. what kind of question is it?

  930. The Lord God called to the man

  931. and said to him,

  932. Where are you?

  933. It's very much a penetrating question.

  934. It's a cutting question.

  935. It's a question that Adam and Eve

  936. are hearing,

  937. believing they've hid themselves

  938. from God.

  939. But God's asking them

  940. this penetrating question.

  941. It's not like a question

  942. that you or I would ask

  943. when we don't know the answer.

  944. Because God has a knowledge of us

  945. that we can never have.

  946. We maybe ask questions like this

  947. in a frustrated situation

  948. where we're thinking,

  949. we're looking for our keys.

  950. Where are they?

  951. Where did I leave them?

  952. Or maybe we're trying to drive

  953. to a certain place

  954. and we're saying to ourselves,

  955. Which turning is it?

  956. Where do we go?

  957. Where do we turn?

  958. We ask these questions

  959. and we don't know

  960. the answers to them.

  961. But God asks the question here,

  962. not because he doesn't know

  963. where they are.

  964. He knows exactly

  965. where they are.

  966. This is not a game of

  967. hide and seek

  968. that God is playing with them.

  969. It's not like us

  970. as small children

  971. or little children

  972. playing with our friends

  973. and we try and go

  974. and hide somewhere

  975. and someone's trying to find us

  976. and they're becoming frustrated

  977. and they're,

  978. where are you?

  979. Will you not just come out?

  980. This is not God

  981. playing a game.

  982. God is asking this question

  983. in a much more serious way.

  984. He knows

  985. where they are.

  986. And Matthew Henry

  987. says in his commentary

  988. on this verse

  989. that he's not asking

  990. this question

  991. in the sense of

  992. it's not

  993. what place

  994. are they.

  995. What he's asking is

  996. in what condition

  997. are they?

  998. Where are you

  999. in the sense

  1000. of what condition

  1001. you're in?

  1002. And that's

  1003. the nature

  1004. of this question.

  1005. It's a penetrating

  1006. question.

  1007. God isn't asking you

  1008. tonight

  1009. where are you?

  1010. And your answer is

1011. I'm sitting in the church

  1012. in Kenneth Street.

  1013. That's not the question

1014. that God is asking you here.

  1015. The question

  1016. he's asking you here

  1017. is

  1018. where are you

  1019. in the sense of

  1020. what condition

  1021. are you in?

  1022. What condition

  1023. are you in

  1024. in your relationship

  1025. with God?

  1026. Do you realize

  1027. what you've done?

  1028. Adam and Eve

  1029. are hearing

  1030. this question.

  1031. God's question

1032. has come as a result

  1033. of their response

  1034. to the question

  1035. that Satan

  1036. the serpent

  1037. had asked them earlier.

  1038. Did God

  1039. really say

  1040. that you would die?

  1041. He had come

  1042. with his crafty

  1043. questions.

  1044. He put doubt

  1045. into their relationship

  1046. with God

  1047. and saying

  1048. can God

  1049. really be trusted?

  1050. That's so often

  1051. the condition

  1052. we've been in

  1053. ourselves.

  1054. Maybe we've heard

  1055. of God

  1056. all our days

  1057. growing up

  1058. but now

  1059. we want to

  1060. put him away

  1061. and there's a doubt

  1062. that comes in.

  1063. Is God real?

  1064. Can God

  1065. be trusted?

  1066. But then

  1067. God comes

  1068. with his

  1069. own question.

  1070. God comes

  1071. and asks you

  1072. tonight

  1073. but where

  1074. are you?

  1075. Where are you

  1076. now?

  1077. What has

  1078. all of your life

  1079. done?

  1080. All that you thought

  1081. you could get away

  1082. with?

  1083. All the ways

  1084. you thought

  1085. you could run

  1086. away from me

  1087. and hide

  1088. and just

  1089. go on

  1090. with your life

  1091. in the way

  1092. that was pleasing

  1093. to yourself?

  1094. Where are you

  1095. now?

  1096. What condition

  1097. are you in?

  1098. What is your

  1099. relationship

  1100. with me?

  1101. Where

  1102. are you?

  1103. God's word

  1104. penetrates.

  1105. God's voice

  1106. penetrates

  1107. here in the garden

  1108. and it should

  1109. penetrate into

  1110. our own

  1111. hearts

  1112. tonight

  1113. asking us

  1114. that question

  1115. where are we?

  1116. The book of

  1117. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 4:12

  1118. 4 verse 12

  1119. says the word

  1120. of God is

  1121. living and

  1122. active

  1123. sharper than

  1124. any two

  1125. edged sword

  1126. piercing

  1127. to the division

  1128. of soul

  1129. and spirit

  1130. of joints

  1131. and marrow

  1132. and discerning

  1133. the thoughts

  1134. and intentions

  1135. of the heart.

  1136. There's no

  1137. hiding place

  1138. from God

  1139. and his

  1140. word

  1141. penetrates.

  1142. His word

  1143. searches

  1144. into your

  1145. heart

  1146. tonight

  1147. asking you

  1148. that question

  1149. where are you?

  1150. And the

  1151. question

  1152. that goes

  1153. with it

  1154. is

  1155. what does

  1156. that

  1157. convict you

  1158. of tonight?

  1159. Where

  1160. are you?

  1161. Jesus'

  1162. question

  1163. so often

  1164. did the

  1165. same

  1166. when he

  1167. was with

  1168. his disciples

  1169. and people

  1170. were discussing

  1171. who Jesus

  1172. was.

  1173. Some people

  1174. were saying

  1175. that he was

  1176. John the

  1177. Baptist

  1178. others saying

  1179. one of the

  1180. prophets

  1181. but Jesus

  1182. asked a

  1183. searching

  1184. question of

  1185. his disciples

  1186. he said

  1187. to them

  1188. but what

  1189. about you

  1190. who do

  1191. you say

  1192. that I

  1193. am?

  1194. It's a

  1195. very similar

  1196. kind of

  1197. question

  1198. it's a

  1199. searching

  1200. question

  1201. it's a

  1202. piercing

  1203. question

  1204. who do

  1205. you say

  1206. that I

  1207. am?

  1208. where

  1209. are you?

  1210. I like

  1211. to watch

  1212. sometimes

  1213. crime

  1214. dramas

  1215. when a

  1216. crime has

  1217. been committed

  1218. and maybe

  1219. a team

  1220. is trying

  1221. to work

  1222. out who

  1223. committed

  1224. the crime

  1225. and they

  1226. have their

  1227. suspects

  1228. they bring

  1229. them in

  1230. one of the

  1231. questions

  1232. that they

  1233. often ask

  1234. is where

  1235. were you

  1236. at midnight

  1237. or a

  1238. certain

  1239. time

  1240. last night?

  1241. It's a

  1242. searching

  1243. question

  1244. it's a

  1245. question

  1246. that your

  1247. defense is

  1248. maybe going

  1249. to be based

  1250. upon

  1251. do you

  1252. have an

  1253. alibi

  1254. or can

  1255. you

  1256. do you

  1257. have no

  1258. answer to

  1259. that question

  1260. that's going

  1261. to convince

  1262. them that

  1263. you weren't

  1264. involved in

  1265. the crime?

  1266. Well God's

  1267. question comes

  1268. in the same

  1269. way tonight

  1270. as well

  1271. where are

  1272. you?

  1273. So can

  1274. you say

  1275. you've got

  1276. your alibi?

  1277. I am in

  1278. Christ

  1279. I am

  1280. entrusting

  1281. my soul

  1282. to him

  1283. I believe

  1284. in him

  1285. with all

  1286. my heart

  1287. or like

  1288. the psalmist

  1289. in Psalm

  1290. 116

  1291. you're able

  1292. to say

  1293. I love

  1294. the Lord

  1295. because my

  1296. voice and

  1297. prayers he did

  1298. hear

  1299. I while I

  1300. live

  1301. will call

  1302. on him

  1303. who bowed

  1304. to me

  1305. his ear

  1306. is that

  1307. your defense

  1308. or are you

  1309. recognizing

  1310. your sin

  1311. in the sense

  1312. you've got

  1313. no defense

  1314. where are

  1315. you?

  1316. You're

  1317. outside

  1318. the camp

  1319. you're

  1320. away from

  1321. God

  1322. you're

  1323. running

  1324. you're

  1325. hiding

  1326. God is

  1327. calling you

  1328. not because

  1329. he doesn't

  1330. know where

  1331. you are

  1332. but he

  1333. knows your

  1334. condition

  1335. and the

  1336. nature of

  1337. his question

  1338. is a

  1339. piercing

  1340. one

  1341. where

  1342. are you?

  1343. But we

  1344. also see

  1345. with this

  1346. question

  1347. that there

  1348. is nurture

  1349. to this

  1350. question

  1351. God is

  1352. asking

  1353. this in

  1354. a

  1355. compassionate

  1356. way

  1357. he'll

  1358. be well

  1359. within his

  1360. rights to

  1361. come and

  1362. condemn them

  1363. for what

  1364. they've done

  1365. they've

  1366. broken the

  1367. covenant

  1368. they've

  1369. broken

  1370. the

  1371. relationship

  1372. with God

  1373. and God

  1374. was within

  1375. his rights

  1376. to cast

  1377. them away

  1378. but that's

  1379. not how

  1380. God

  1381. comes

  1382. so often

  1383. we maybe

  1384. see things

  1385. or hear

  1386. things where

  1387. a joke

  1388. has been

  1389. played on

  1390. someone

  1391. in my

  1392. younger

  1393. years

  1394. it was

  1395. Beatles

  1396. about

  1397. when

  1398. they

  1399. used

  1400. to

  1401. set

  1402. up

  1403. someone

  1404. to

  1405. maybe

  1406. have

  1407. their

  1408. card

  1409. thrashed

  1410. or something

  1411. like that

  1412. and just

  1413. filming them

  1414. and what

  1415. their reaction

  1416. would be

  1417. today it's

  1418. more

  1419. aunt and

  1420. deck

  1421. on a

  1422. Saturday

  1423. night

  1424. setting up

  1425. some

  1426. celebrity

  1427. when something

  1428. goes

  1429. wrong

  1430. and they're

  1431. just

  1432. filming them

  1433. to see

  1434. how they'll

  1435. react

  1436. there's

  1437. a funny

  1438. side

  1439. to it

  1440. but there's

  1441. not

  1442. humour

  1443. in the

  1444. way God

  1445. looks on

  1446. us

  1447. he's not

  1448. looking on

  1449. us and

  1450. thinking

  1451. well I'm

  1452. just going

  1453. to do

  1454. this to

  1455. see

  1456. how they

  1457. react

  1458. how does

  1459. God react

  1460. when we

  1461. have wronged

  1462. him

  1463. how did

  1464. Christ react

  1465. as Peter

  1466. denied him

  1467. how did

  1468. he react

  1469. on the

  1470. cross as

  1471. he looked

  1472. down and

  1473. saw those

  1474. who were

  1475. crucifying

  1476. him

  1477. the wonder

  1478. of compassion

  1479. and grace

  1480. and love

  1481. that he showed

  1482. towards his

  1483. own

  1484. so when you

  1485. look at the

  1486. question here

  1487. where are you

  1488. God within

  1489. his rights

  1490. to come

  1491. in immediate

  1492. judgment

  1493. on these

  1494. people

  1495. to condemn

  1496. them

  1497. say why

  1498. have you

  1499. done this

  1500. he could

  1501. give them

  1502. a lecture

  1503. and say

  1504. Adam

  1505. Eve

  1506. I can't

  1507. believe

  1508. what you've

  1509. done

  1510. how could

  1511. you

  1512. after all

  1513. I've done

  1514. for you

  1515. how could

  1516. you be

  1517. so stupid

  1518. but God

  1519. graciously

  1520. comes to

  1521. Adam and

  1522. Eve

  1523. asking

  1524. where

  1525. are you

  1526. there is

  1527. almost

  1528. a sense

  1529. of humor

  1530. here

  1531. when you

  1532. see

  1533. they're

  1534. trying to

  1535. hide

  1536. among

  1537. the trees

  1538. trying to

  1539. hide

  1540. themselves

  1541. from the

  1542. God

  1543. who

  1544. made

  1545. the

  1546. heavens

  1547. and

  1548. the

  1549. earth

  1550. it's

  1551. impossible

  1552. even as

  1553. we sang

  1554. in

  1555. Psalm 139

  1556. Psalm that

  1557. says you

  1558. know it

  1559. doesn't matter

  1560. where we go

  1561. in this

  1562. world

  1563. there's no

  1564. getting away

  1565. from God

  1566. whether you

  1567. take the

  1568. wings to the

  1569. utmost parts

  1570. of sea

  1571. even there

  1572. God is

  1573. there's no

  1574. hiding

  1575. there's no

  1576. getting away

  1577. from God

  1578. but God

  1579. is saying

  1580. here yes

  1581. sin must

  1582. be judged

  1583. he's not

  1584. letting that

  1585. go

  1586. and we see

  1587. that at the

  1588. cross as sin

  1589. was judged

  1590. finally as

  1591. Christ gave

  1592. his life

  1593. but God

  1594. does not

  1595. immediately

  1596. give what

  1597. sin

  1598. deserves

  1599. thank God

  1600. for his

  1601. grace

  1602. towards us

  1603. because where

  1604. would we be

  1605. without his

  1606. grace

  1607. where would

  1608. you be

  1609. tonight

  1610. without his

  1611. grace

  1612. where are

  1613. you tonight

  1614. in light

  1615. of his

  1616. grace

  1617. are you

  1618. leaning upon

  1619. it

  1620. are you

  1621. trusting

  1622. in it

  1623. we forget

  1624. the Lord

  1625. but as one

  1626. commentator

  1627. put it

  1628. he must

  1629. draw him

  1630. out of

  1631. hiding

  1632. that's what

  1633. he says

  1634. of Adam

  1635. he is a

  1636. good shepherd

  1637. who seeks

  1638. the lost

  1639. sheep

  1640. and it's

  1641. not what

  1642. God does

  1643. to us

  1644. when he

  1645. comes to

  1646. save us

  1647. from our

  1648. sin

  1649. he draws

  1650. us out

  1651. of our

  1652. hiding

  1653. place

  1654. wherever

  1655. you're

  1656. hiding

  1657. wherever

  1658. you're

  1659. running

  1660. to

  1661. you're

  1662. running

  1663. from

  1664. God

  1665. but he

  1666. will

  1667. come

  1668. and he

  1669. will

  1670. come

  1671. to draw

  1672. you

  1673. out

  1674. of

  1675. hiding

  1676. we so

  1677. easily

  1678. forget

  1679. the

  1680. Lord

  1681. our

  1682. God

  1683. and there's

  1684. consequences

  1685. for that

  1686. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 8:11

  1687. 8

  1688. verse 11

  1689. says

  1690. take care

  1691. lest you

  1692. forget

  1693. the Lord

  1694. your God

  1695. by not

  1696. keeping

  1697. his commandments

  1698. and his

  1699. rules

  1700. and his

  1701. statutes

  1702. which I

  1703. command

  1704. you today

  1705. you know

  1706. he still

  1707. says to us

  1708. to keep

  1709. his laws

  1710. to keep

  1711. his commandments

  1712. but he knows

  1713. we cannot

  1714. keep them

  1715. perfectly

  1716. but even

  1717. when we

  1718. fail

  1719. in that

  1720. we have

  1721. a way

  1722. to salvation

  1723. that is

  1724. through

  1725. Christ

  1726. Jesus

  1727. because when

  1728. you come

  1729. into the

  1730. New Testament

  1731. you think

  1732. of the

  1733. words

  1734. of Jesus

  1735. in Matthew

    Matthew 11:28

  1736. 11

  1737. verse 28

  1738. come to

  1739. me

  1740. all you

  1741. who labor

  1742. and are

  1743. heavy laden

  1744. and I

  1745. will give

  1746. you rest

  1747. he calls

  1748. a people

  1749. to himself

  1750. so even

  1751. as he

  1752. asks this

  1753. question

  1754. that is

  1755. nurtured

  1756. in it

  1757. where

  1758. are

  1759. you

  1760. but

  1761. there's

  1762. warning

  1763. to

  1764. he's

  1765. saying

  1766. to us

  1767. will you

  1768. listen

  1769. will you

  1770. heed

  1771. this

  1772. question

  1773. will you

  1774. recognize

  1775. your

  1776. condition

  1777. how far

  1778. short

  1779. you're

  1780. falling

  1781. when you're

  1782. running

  1783. from me

  1784. what is

  1785. your

  1786. condition

  1787. tonight

  1788. in this

  1789. sense

  1790. do you

  1791. need

  1792. the grace

  1793. of God

  1794. as we

  1795. all do

  1796. or do

  1797. you

  1798. recognize

  1799. your

  1800. need

  1801. of the

  1802. grace

  1803. of God

  1804. or maybe

  1805. you're

  1806. saying

  1807. to yourself

  1808. I know

  1809. I need

  1810. it

  1811. but I

  1812. don't

  1813. deserve

  1814. it

  1815. none

  1816. of us

  1817. do

  1818. and yet

  1819. God

  1820. by his

  1821. mercy

  1822. is able

  1823. to show

  1824. grace

  1825. there's a

  1826. story told

  1827. of a man

  1828. who was

  1829. struggling

  1830. to believe

  1831. and to

  1832. find peace

  1833. with God

  1834. and he

  1835. came to

  1836. another

  1837. Christian

  1838. friend

  1839. one day

  1840. and he

  1841. said to

  1842. him

  1843. I am

  1844. such

  1845. a

  1846. helpless

  1847. miserable

  1848. sinner

  1849. there's

  1850. no hope

  1851. for me

  1852. I've

  1853. prayed

  1854. and I've

  1855. tried

  1856. my best

  1857. and I've

  1858. vowed

  1859. until I'm

  1860. sick of

  1861. my efforts

  1862. there's

  1863. just no

  1864. hope

  1865. in my

  1866. situation

  1867. his friend

  1868. said to

  1869. him

  1870. do you

  1871. believe

  1872. that Christ

  1873. died for

  1874. your sins

  1875. and rose

  1876. again

  1877. and he

  1878. said yes

  1879. of course

  1880. I do

  1881. believe

  1882. that

  1883. his

  1884. Christian

  1885. friend

  1886. said

  1887. to

  1888. him

  1889. well

  1890. if

  1891. he

  1892. were

  1893. here

  1894. on

  1895. earth

  1896. in bodily

  1897. form

  1898. invisible

  1899. what would

  1900. you do

  1901. he said

  1902. well I

  1903. would go

  1904. to him

  1905. at once

  1906. and what

  1907. would you

  1908. ask of

  1909. him

  1910. well I

  1911. would ask

  1912. him

  1913. to forgive

  1914. my sins

  1915. and what

  1916. would he

  1917. answer

  1918. and there

  1919. was a

  1920. silence

  1921. and then

  1922. he asked

  1923. him again

  1924. what would

  1925. he answer

  1926. and then

  1927. suddenly

  1928. the man's

  1929. eyes lit

  1930. up and a

  1931. smile of

  1932. peace

  1933. came on

  1934. his face

  1935. he said

  1936. he would

  1937. answer

  1938. I will

  1939. and that's

  1940. the wonder

  1941. of God's

  1942. grace

  1943. the devil

  1944. will have

  1945. us

  1946. troubled

  1947. by our

  1948. sins

  1949. forever

  1950. if he

  1951. could

  1952. but the

  1953. word of

  1954. God

  1955. the

  1956. nurture

  1957. of it

  1958. calls us

  1959. to himself

  1960. to find

  1961. one who

  1962. is able

  1963. to forgive

  1964. as it

  1965. says in

  1966. first John

  1967. one verse

  1968. nine

  1969. if we

  1970. confess

  1971. our sins

  1972. he is

  1973. faithful and

  1974. just to

  1975. forgive us

  1976. our sins

  1977. and cleanse

  1978. us from

  1979. all

  1980. unrighteousness

  1981. may we

  1982. see the

  1983. grace of

  1984. God

  1985. the

  1986. unworthiness

  1987. because of

  1988. our sin

  1989. but see

  1990. why he

  1991. came and

  1992. come and

  1993. confess our

  1994. sins

  1995. and that he

  1996. is faithful

  1997. and just

  1998. to forgive

  1999. where are

  2000. you tonight

  2001. if you

  2002. will come

  2003. to him

  2004. and say

  2005. to him

  2006. forgive my

  2007. sins

  2008. he is

  2009. able to

  2010. say

  2011. I will

  2012. the final

  2013. thing just

  2014. briefly we

  2015. see of

  2016. this question

  2017. is the

  2018. need of

  2019. this

  2020. question

  2021. it's such

  2022. a needful

  2023. question for

  2024. us all

  2025. you know as

  2026. we approach

  2027. the Lord's

  2028. Supper

  2029. every one

  2030. of us

  2031. God willing

  2032. in this

  2033. coming week

  2034. this is a

  2035. question

  2036. we need to

  2037. ask of

  2038. ourselves

  2039. where are

  2040. you

  2041. if you

  2042. come

  2043. as one

  2044. who is

  2045. professing

  2046. faith

  2047. you will

  2048. ask yourself

  2049. that question

  2050. and you

  2051. realize

  2052. so often

  2053. we're not

  2054. where we

  2055. want to

  2056. be

  2057. so often

  2058. we feel

  2059. so far

  2060. removed

  2061. from God

  2062. so far

  2063. away

  2064. from God

  2065. we see

  2066. our sins

  2067. we know

  2068. them

  2069. only too

  2070. well

  2071. but it's

  2072. a question

  2073. that puts

  2074. us right

  2075. back to

  2076. the cross

  2077. right back

  2078. to Christ

  2079. back to

  2080. where we

  2081. need to

  2082. come always

  2083. recognizing

  2084. our

  2085. shortcomings

  2086. but recognizing

  2087. we come

  2088. to do this

  2089. in remembrance

  2090. of him

  2091. not because

  2092. of ourselves

  2093. but in

  2094. remembrance

  2095. of him

  2096. and what

  2097. he's done

  2098. and if

  2099. you are

  2100. not

  2101. professing

  2102. tonight

  2103. this

  2104. coming

  2105. week

  2106. may the

  2107. Lord

  2108. prick

  2109. you in

  2110. your

  2111. heart

  2112. asking

  2113. you this

  2114. question

  2115. where are

  2116. you

  2117. and if

  2118. you're not

  2119. right with

  2120. God

  2121. what needs

  2122. to change

  2123. it is

  2124. to come

  2125. to come

  2126. to him

  2127. when you

  2128. look at

  2129. this

  2130. passage

  2131. the

  2132. Lord

  2133. came to

  2134. them

  2135. it says

  2136. in verse

  2137. 8

  2138. in the

  2139. cool

  2140. of the

  2141. day

  2142. and

  2143. commentators

  2144. debate

  2145. and say

  2146. well what

  2147. time of

  2148. day

  2149. was this

  2150. there are

  2151. some who

  2152. would say

  2153. and go

  2154. along with

  2155. them and

  2156. say well

  2157. it's

  2158. probably

  2159. first

  2160. thing

  2161. in the

  2162. morning

  2163. the

  2164. morning

  2165. would bring

  2166. with it

  2167. a cool

  2168. wind

  2169. and the

  2170. light

  2171. would be

  2172. coming

  2173. and they

  2174. say this

  2175. is almost

  2176. indicative of

  2177. where they

  2178. were

  2179. from the

  2180. darkness

  2181. of night

  2182. knowing that

  2183. they'd

  2184. sinned

  2185. into the

  2186. light of

  2187. day when

  2188. God

  2189. calls them

  2190. and showing

  2191. there

  2192. we see

  2193. what Christ

  2194. did

  2195. how he

  2196. came

  2197. into the

  2198. darkness

  2199. of a

  2200. fallen

  2201. world

  2202. but he

  2203. came as

  2204. the light

  2205. of the

  2206. world

  2207. the light

  2208. to show

  2209. us the

  2210. way to

  2211. God

  2212. and back

  2213. to him

  2214. the human

  2215. response to

  2216. guilt

  2217. is so

  2218. often to

  2219. try and

  2220. hide

  2221. to run

  2222. away

  2223. but there's

  2224. nowhere

  2225. where we

  2226. can hide

  2227. and this

  2228. question

  2229. is needful

  2230. for ourselves

  2231. where are

  2232. we

  2233. today

  2234. in light

  2235. of this

  2236. what is

  2237. the hardest

  2238. question

  2239. you face

  2240. tonight

  2241. what is

  2242. the hardest

  2243. question

  2244. you've had

  2245. to answer

  2246. in your

  2247. life

  2248. well the

  2249. hardest

  2250. questions

  2251. are not

  2252. the questions

  2253. for ourselves

  2254. but the

  2255. question

  2256. that puts

  2257. God into

  2258. our life

  2259. and questions

  2260. prick

  2261. our hearts

  2262. one of the

  2263. greatest

  2264. questions

  2265. that challenged

  2266. me was a

  2267. question on a

  2268. tract I was

  2269. given

  2270. where will you

  2271. spend

  2272. eternity

  2273. another

  2274. important

  2275. question

  2276. and you can

  2277. only answer

  2278. that in light

  2279. of this

  2280. question

  2281. where are

  2282. you

  2283. where are

  2284. you

  2285. with God

  2286. tonight

  2287. is the

  2288. question

  2289. we need

  2290. so how

  2291. do you

  2292. answer

  2293. are you

  2294. resting

  2295. in Christ

  2296. or are you

  2297. still running

  2298. and trying

  2299. to hide

  2300. in the midst

  2301. of the

  2302. trees

  2303. like Adam

  2304. and Eve

  2305. thinking

  2306. God won't

  2307. see me

  2308. God

  2309. isn't asking

  2310. you the

  2311. question

  2312. because he

  2313. doesn't know

  2314. where you

  2315. are

  2316. he's asking

  2317. the question

  2318. because he

  2319. knows

  2320. exactly where

  2321. you are

  2322. he knows

  2323. your condition

  2324. and the

  2325. reason he's

  2326. asking

  2327. is that you

  2328. might come

  2329. and be

  2330. right with

  2331. him

  2332. so ponder

  2333. this question

  2334. tonight

  2335. and God

  2336. willing if you

  2337. have time

  2338. in the days

  2339. ahead

  2340. but don't

  2341. leave it

  2342. too long

  2343. because

  2344. eternity

  2345. depends

  2346. on your

  2347. answer

  2348. so where

  2349. are you

  2350. may you

  2351. come

  2352. and find

  2353. yourself

  2354. leaning

  2355. and resting

  2356. in Christ

  2357. and may you

  2358. come

  2359. may we all

  2360. come

  2361. to remember

  2362. him

  2363. in his grace

  2364. and his love

  2365. towards us

  2366. and do it

  2367. in remembrance

  2368. of him

  2369. let us pray

  2370. our father

  2371. in heaven

  2372. help us

  2373. to have

  2374. answers to

  2375. the questions

  2376. that you

  2377. pose to

  2378. us

  2379. and especially

  2380. the most

  2381. important

  2382. questions

  2383. of all

  2384. as we

  2385. ask ourselves

  2386. this evening

  2387. where are

  2388. we

  2389. in light

  2390. of your

  2391. word

  2392. and in

  2393. light of

  2394. your grace

  2395. in light

  2396. of all

  2397. that you

  2398. have done

  2399. for us

  2400. in Christ

  2401. Jesus

  2402. your Lord

  2403. help us

  2404. that we

  2405. will find

  2406. ourselves

  2407. resting

  2408. in him

  2409. and trusting

  2410. in him

  2411. Lord

  2412. show us

  2413. your ways

  2414. and guide

  2415. us

  2416. and forgive

  2417. us

  2418. for all

  2419. we ask

  2420. we ask

  2421. in his

  2422. name

  2423. amen

  2424. we're going

  2425. to conclude

  2426. by singing

  2427. again in

  2428. Psalm 56

  2429. in the

  2430. Sing

  2431. Psalms

  2432. version

  2433. the last

  2434. three

  2435. stanzas

  2436. from

  2437. verse 10

  2438. Psalm 56

  2439. on page

  2440. 74

  2441. in the

  2442. Lord

  2443. whose

  2444. word

  2445. I

  2446. honor

  2447. in my

  2448. God

  2449. I

  2450. praise

  2451. his

  2452. word

  2453. I

  2454. will

  2455. trust

  2456. and not

  2457. be

  2458. fearful

  2459. what

  2460. can

  2461. man

  2462. do

  2463. to

  2464. me

  2465. Lord

  2466. we'll

  2467. sing

  2468. from

  2469. verse 10

  2470. down to

  2471. the

  2472. end

  2473. of

  2474. the

  2475. Psalm

  2476. to

  2477. God's

  2478. praise

  2479. word

  2480. I

  2481. will

  2482. trust

  2483. and not

  2484. be

  2485. fearful

  2486. what

  2487. can

  2488. man

  2489. do

  2490. to

  2491. me

  2492. Lord

  2493. I

  2494. have

  2495. taken

  2496. verse

  2497. before

  2498. you

  2499. to

  2500. my

  2501. God

  2502. I

  2503. will

  2504. be

  2505. true

  2506. sacrifice

  2507. of

  2508. thy

  2509. giving

  2510. I

  2511. will

  2512. gladly

  2513. give

  2514. to

  2515. you

  2516. for

  2517. you

  2518. kept

  2519. my

  2520. feet

  2521. from

  2522. stumbling

  2523. and

  2524. from

  2525. death

  2526. you

  2527. set

  2528. me

  2529. free

  2530. so

  2531. that

  2532. I

  2533. may

  2534. walk

  2535. before

  2536. you

  2537. and

  2538. the

  2539. light

  2540. of

  2541. life

  2542. may

  2543. see

  2544. after

  2545. the

  2546. benediction

  2547. I'll

  2548. go to

  2549. the

  2550. door

  2551. to

  2552. my

  2553. right

  2554. here

  2555. now

  2556. may

  2557. grace

  2558. mercy

  2559. and

  2560. peace

  2561. from

  2562. God

  2563. Father

  2564. Son

  2565. and

  2566. Holy

  2567. Spirit

  2568. rest

  2569. upon

  2570. and

  2571. abide

  2572. with

  2573. you

  2574. all

  2575. now

  2576. and

  2577. forever

  2578. more

  2579. Amen

  2580. Thank ser υ
