  1. As God's people, we are a praying people, I hope.

  2. I'm sure we all come prayerfully as we approach God,

  3. and especially as we approach a communion season.

  4. We're looking to God and seeking his blessing in our lives,

  5. in our congregation, in our community,

  6. and far and wide that God would come in a day of his power,

  7. in a day of his reviving power.

  8. But as you approach God yourself,

  9. what is it that you're asking of God?

  10. What are you asking or want from him in terms of your own life, perhaps?

  11. Is there particular prayers you have at this time?

  12. Are you thankful for the way maybe you can look back

  13. and see how God has answered prayer in the past?

  14. Do you come to God expectantly then as you pray now,

  15. knowing that he has been faithful and that he promises

  16. to be faithful to hear his people?

  17. Prayer is a wonderful privilege,

  18. and as we heard in the prayers this evening,

  19. it's not something that we are to take for granted.

  20. Even the meeting, our meeting here this evening

  21. and over these coming days,

  22. it is not something that we are to take for granted at all,

  23. but to truly give thanks to God

  24. for the wonderful privilege

  25. and the wonderful blessing

  26. of having his word

  27. and the opportunity to meet.

  28. Psalm 40, we know so well,

  29. when we sing it so often,

  30. I waited for the Lord my God.

  31. There's a sense of expectation in that psalm.

  32. And in verse 5, the psalmist says,

  33. O Lord my God,

  34. full many are the wonders thou hast done.

  35. Thy gracious thoughts to us

  36. were far above all thoughts are gone.

  37. There's a sense of wonder and amazement there with God

  38. at the great things that he has done.

  39. They cannot be numbered,

  40. the things that God has done for his people.

  41. But as we come to God's word,

  42. it gives us a focus on a sense of thankfulness

  43. for all that God has indeed done for us.

  44. Are you a person who keeps a diary?

  45. There are some people who enjoy keeping a diary

  46. on a daily basis.

  47. Maybe write what you've done,

  48. things you've seen,

  49. things you've heard in a diary on a daily basis.

  50. Other people,

  51. it's maybe just some sketchy notes

  52. from time to time of something important,

  53. something major happens.

  54. Or for others,

  55. it's maybe let's just make sure

  56. we get the important dates in

  57. so we remember anniversaries and birthdays

  58. and things like that.

  59. But we all have a sense of looking at the past

  60. and looking at the future

  61. in a sense of keeping a diary for ourselves,

  62. remembering things and looking forward to things.

  63. There are often dates that we have marked

  64. and perhaps one of the dates

  65. that's maybe ingrained in your mind

  66. is the fourth Sunday of August.

  67. What's the significance of that?

  68. You might say,

  69. well, I'm sure many of you know

  70. the significance of that date

  71. is the date set aside

  72. for the communion season here in Stornoway,

  73. the fourth Sunday in August.

  74. But then as we think back

  75. over these last couple of years,

  76. perhaps that's kind of gone out of our focus.

  77. The fourth Sunday in August,

  78. the last couple of years,

  79. hasn't had the same significance.

  80. We've been hindered

  81. in being able to meet

  82. and especially to meet

  83. in terms of taking communion together.

  84. But we pray that we're coming through that time,

  85. that we're moving forward.

  86. But we also look back

  87. and we ask questions like,

  88. what have we learned in that time?

  89. What have we learned about ourselves?

  90. What have we learned about others?

  91. What have we learned about the world

  92. in which we live?

  93. We've probably learned a lot

  94. in terms of ourselves.

  95. Maybe we think to ourselves,

  96. how much was I taking for granted in my life?

  97. Was I just struggling along slowly,

  98. wondering just what was it all about?

  99. And all of a sudden,

  100. when things came to a shuddering halt,

  101. begin to ask yourselves more serious questions.

  102. Was I obedient to God?

  103. Did I really show my love of God?

  104. Did I show my love for my fellow Christians,

  105. my brothers and sisters in Christ?

  106. Was my urgency with the gospel

  107. what it should have been?

  108. And perhaps for a time,

  109. we were shaken up to that end.

  110. But then as we come back to normal,

  111. we can easily lose that focus once again,

  112. lose that edge.

  113. We ask ourselves too and at all,

  114. what have we learned of God?

  115. Have you learned more deeply

  116. the importance of your relationship with God?

  117. On a personal level,

  118. we've maybe learned just how much we need him,

  119. how much we depend on him,

  120. but also how much we can rely on him,

  121. that he is a faithful God.

  122. Collectively as God's people,

  123. hopefully we've learned how much

  124. we long for fellowship with each other,

  125. how much we long for God's word,

  126. how much we long to remember

  127. the Lord's death till he come.

  128. Nationally, what have we learned?

  129. And internationally, what have we learned?

  130. Perhaps we've learned just how far from God

  131. we had gone,

  132. maybe have still gone.

  133. There's no thought of God

  134. in the midst of it all.

  135. But as we move forward,

  136. we long to see as God's people,

  137. his blessing upon us,

  138. to learn lessons

  139. and to seek his blessing

  140. on us as a people,

  141. as a congregation

  142. and indeed as nations of the world.

  143. The city of Glasgow perhaps

  144. reflects so much of our nation.

  145. You may be familiar with Glasgow,

  146. many of you sure are very familiar with it,

  147. but they have a coat of arms for the city

  148. with a motto on it.

  149. And the motto now reads,

  150. let Glasgow flourish.

  151. But that's not always been the motto.

  152. Some of you I'm sure know

  153. what it once was,

  154. that back in the year 1631,

  155. the motto of Glasgow was formed

  156. and the words were this,

  157. let Glasgow flourish

  158. through the preaching of thy word

  159. and the praising of thy name.

  160. That was the motto of Glasgow

  161. for over 200 years.

  162. And indeed our nation knew

  163. a time of blessing

  164. over those years too.

  165. But in 1866,

  166. the last part of the motto was dropped

  167. and it became,

  168. let Glasgow flourish.

  169. But no answer as to how.

  170. And what's interesting about it is

  171. when you look on the council website,

  172. the city council website,

  173. when they speak about the motto

  174. and how it changed,

  175. it says the new motto is

  176. a curtailment of the text

  177. inscribed on the bell

  178. of the Tron church

  179. cast in 1631.

  180. They mean a shortened version.

  181. But I think what they've said

  182. says so much,

  183. it's a curtailment.

  184. They're curtailing

  185. the way Glasgow or anywhere

  186. is going to flourish.

  187. Dropping the part

  188. that is going to flourish

  189. by the preaching of thy word

  190. is so definitive in many ways,

  191. so enlightening in many ways.

  192. But as we turn to this psalm,

  193. what we find is

  194. the psalm is giving us a reminder

  195. of how we can be revived,

  196. of how we can know

  197. God's blessing.

  198. Verse 12, for example,

  199. is a very famous verse itself.

  200. Blessed is the nation

  201. whose God is the Lord,

  202. the people whom he has chosen

  203. as his heritage.

  204. It reminds us of

  205. where that motto for Glasgow

  206. once came from.

  207. It was looking to God

  208. and seeking blessing

  209. through the preaching

  210. of the word.

  211. Recognizing his steadfast love,

  212. an unchanging love from God,

  213. a God who is able to bless

  214. if only we would seek him.

  215. And so as we prayerfully approach

  216. this communion weekend,

  217. as we seek God's blessing on us,

  218. are we thankful?

  219. Are we praising him

  220. as we should?

  221. And are we seeking

  222. the blessing of God on us?

  223. Are we encouraged?

  224. Are we looking forward

  225. in anticipation?

  226. Are we hungry for the word

  227. and for the sacrament?

  228. God's word is what will stir us up

  229. as we approach the sacrament

  230. on the Lord's day.

  231. Through the preaching of his word,

  232. may we all be blessed

  233. and encouraged together

  234. over these days

  235. and to show our love for God

  236. and coming to remember

  237. his death together,

  238. to remember what he has done for us.

  239. And there's three things

  240. I want us to take

  241. from this psalm tonight.

  242. Three ways that we can see

  243. encouragement for ourselves

  244. as we approach this time.

  245. And the first thing is this,

  246. we see God's word

  247. and the blessing

  248. that there is in it.

  249. The second thing we see

  250. is God's will

  251. and the wonder of it.

  252. And the third thing

  253. is God's worth

  254. and that nothing compares.

  255. So the first thing we have

  256. is God's word

  257. and the blessing of it.

  258. Psalm 33 is,

  259. as you begin in the beginning

  260. of the psalm,

  261. shout for joy in the Lord.

  262. In many ways,

  263. our joy was hindered.

  264. And has been hindered

  265. over the last while.

  266. We haven't felt maybe

  267. able to shout properly

  268. with joy in the Lord.

  269. But when God comes

  270. and revives his people,

  271. we cannot but help

  272. but to shout for joy

  273. in the Lord.

  274. And that is the foremost,

  275. what's foremost in this psalm,

  276. is a psalm of praise.

  277. And the praise comes

  278. when we see and know

  279. who God is.

  280. When we show our dependence

  281. upon him

  282. and we see that he is

  283. in control

  284. of all things.

  285. And when he shows

  286. his steadfast love

  287. continually towards

  288. his people

  289. in whatever circumstances

  290. we are,

  291. how God shows

  292. his steadfast love,

  293. his faithful,

  294. unchanging love.

  295. And that again

  296. is a great reminder

  297. to us

  298. and something we have

  299. to remind ourselves

  300. of time and time again.

  301. Our God reigns.

  302. He hasn't changed

  303. his position.

  304. He is where he's always been,

  305. overruling

  306. in all things.

  307. And the psalmist here

  308. in Psalm 33

  309. is showing us

  310. that we have

  311. every reason

  312. to praise God.

  313. It's linked closely

  314. to Psalm 32,

  315. the previous one as well.

  316. What you see

  317. as you read through

  318. Psalm 32,

  319. it's a psalm

  320. that speaks

  321. of the Lord

  322. being praised

  323. because he is

  324. the one

  325. who forgives sin.

  326. He is the one

  327. who forgives sin.

  328. When we acknowledge

  329. our sin

  330. before him,

  331. he is able

  332. to forgive.

  333. And as we know

  334. the forgiveness

  335. of God,

  336. we praise his name.

  337. And as we come

  338. into Psalm 33,

  339. the praise

  340. almost increases.

  341. The praise

  342. just goes on.

  343. Shout for joy

  344. in the Lord,

  345. O you righteous.

  346. Praise befits

  347. the upright.

  348. Give thanks

  349. to the Lord.

  350. Give thanks

  351. to the Lord.

  352. One commentator

  353. describes

  354. Psalm 33

  355. as God

  356. blowing over

  357. the coals

  358. of our heart

  359. so that they

  360. will catch fire

  361. with worship

  362. and praise.

  363. God

  364. blowing over

  365. the coals

  366. of our hearts

  367. so they will

  368. catch fire

  369. with worship

  370. and praise.

  371. Something we used

  372. to do

  373. which is not

  374. as common

  375. now

  376. is banking

  377. the stove.

  378. I'm sure

  379. many of you

  380. have done it

  381. maybe still do.

  382. You bank

  383. the stove

  384. at night

  385. bank it up

  386. so that hopefully

  387. in the morning

  388. there'll be something

  389. that you can put

  390. more peat

  391. or coal

  392. onto

  393. and it's just

  394. going to fan

  395. itself into flame

  396. once again

  397. instead of letting

  398. the fire

  399. die out

  400. you keep it

  401. bank

  402. bank to keep

  403. the embers

  404. burning.

  405. And maybe

  406. in some ways

  407. these last

  408. couple of years

  409. it's almost

  410. like our hearts

  411. have just been

  412. banked

  413. dampened

  414. down in some

  415. ways.

  416. Yes there's

  417. a flame

  418. in there

  419. but it's

  420. down somewhere

  421. deep

  422. and it needs

  423. fanning into

  424. flame.

  425. once again

  426. and maybe

  427. we still

  428. feel a bit

  429. like that

  430. too

  431. but what

  432. the crucial

  433. thing is

  434. is that the

  435. fire is there

  436. and also

  437. we have the

  438. spirit of

  439. God

  440. and his

  441. word

  442. to blow

  443. over our

  444. hearts

  445. and to

  446. fan us

  447. into flame

  448. once again.

  449. In verse

  450. four here

  451. we read

  452. the word

  453. of the

  454. Lord

  455. is upright.

  456. The word

  457. of the

  458. Lord

  459. is precious.

  460. It is

  461. what we

  462. need.

  463. And the

  464. more we

  465. come into

  466. God's

  467. word and

  468. the more

  469. we see

  470. the steadfast

  471. love of

  472. God and

  473. come to

  474. give him

  475. praise the

  476. more our

  477. hearts are

  478. fanned into

  479. flame once

  480. again.

  481. You remember

  482. the two on

  483. the road to

  484. Emmaus after

  485. the crucifixion

  486. of Christ.

  487. There they

  488. met with the

  489. Lord on the

  490. way and

  491. what was it

  492. that happened?

  493. Their hearts

  494. burned within

  495. them.

  496. How?

  497. As the

  498. Lord opened

  499. up the

  500. scriptures to

  501. them.

  502. What God

  503. was the

  504. Lord was

  505. teaching them

  506. through the

  507. Old Testament

  508. and through

  509. this teaching

  510. and through

  511. what had

  512. happened in

  513. these days

  514. he fanned

  515. them into

  516. flame and

  517. they were

  518. burning then

  519. for the

  520. Lord to

  521. go and

  522. meet with

  523. others.

  524. And that

  525. is our

  526. prayer as

  527. we approach

  528. God's word

  529. over this

  530. season.

  531. As we hear

  532. the preaching

  533. of God's

  534. word over

  535. these days

  536. that the

  537. word we

  538. bless to

  539. all our

  540. hearts.

  541. That it

  542. would rekindle

  543. the fires

  544. in our

  545. hearts.

  546. Our love

  547. for the

  548. Lord, our

  549. love for

  550. each other,

  551. our love

  552. for fellowship,

  553. our love

  554. in all

  555. senses

  556. towards God.

  557. The word

  558. of God

  559. is what

  560. we need.

  561. The word

  562. of Lord

  563. is upright

  564. as it

  565. says here.

  566. The word

  567. is like a

  568. compass that

  569. guides his

  570. people.

  571. And that

  572. is what we

  573. need.

  574. All around

  575. us we

  576. see the

  577. result of

  578. abandoning

  579. God's

  580. word.

  581. Of

  582. abandoning

  583. like the

  584. city of

  585. Glasgow

  586. that motto

  587. through the

  588. preaching

  589. of thy

  590. word.

  591. When we

  592. abandon

  593. God's

  594. word,

  595. where do

  596. we go?

  597. We've

  598. got no

  599. direction.

  600. Our

  601. society

  602. is just

  603. cast

  604. adrift.

  605. We're

  606. rudderless.

  607. We don't

  608. have any

  609. steering at

  610. all.

  611. We're

  612. heading in

  613. the wrong

  614. direction.

  615. God's

  616. word to

  617. help us

  618. flourish.

  619. We need

  620. God's

  621. word and

  622. we have

  623. the

  624. privilege

  625. of it

  626. before us

  627. here.

  628. And through

  629. the preaching

  630. of God's

  631. word over

  632. this weekend

  633. and week

  634. after week

  635. and hearing

  636. it and

  637. reading it

  638. and sharing

  639. it together,

  640. may we be

  641. stirred up

  642. in our

  643. faith.

  644. God's

  645. word as

  646. we see

  647. and so

  648. often

  649. reminds us

  650. of the

  651. dangers of

  652. just drifting

  653. away from

  654. it,

  655. neglecting

  656. it,

  657. turning

  658. away from

  659. it.

  660. What does

  661. it lead

  662. to?

  663. There's

  664. immorality,

  665. wickedness,

  666. evil in

  667. this world

  668. beyond what

  669. we could

  670. comprehend,

  671. beyond what

  672. we might

  673. think is

  674. possible.

  675. There is

  676. wickedness

  677. all around

  678. us.

  679. But what

  680. we need

  681. again is

  682. God's

  683. word.

  684. and the

  685. blessing

  686. of it.

  687. We can

  688. trust

  689. this

  690. word.

  691. It is a

  692. word that

  693. is powerful.

  694. It is by

  695. the word of

  696. the Lord

  697. the heavens

  698. were made

  699. and the

  700. breath of

  701. his mouth

  702. all their

  703. host.

  704. He did

  705. all through

  706. his word.

  707. And it

  708. says there

  709. in verse

  710. 8,

  711. let all

  712. the earth

  713. fear the

  714. Lord,

  715. let the

  716. inhabitants

  717. of the

  718. world

  719. stand in

  720. awe of

  721. him.

  722. May we

  723. stand

  724. in awe

  725. of him.

  726. He is

  727. our God,

  728. he is

  729. our Lord,

  730. the maker

  731. of heaven

  732. and earth.

  733. He is a

  734. great God

  735. who is in

  736. control of

  737. all things.

  738. So pray

  739. for the

  740. preaching of

  741. the word

  742. over these

  743. days.

  744. Pray that

  745. will fan us

  746. all into

  747. flame for

  748. the Lord,

  749. encouraging

  750. our hearts,

  751. reminding us

  752. that God

  753. is in

  754. control.

  755. The second

  756. thing we

  757. see here

  758. is God's

  759. will.

  760. God,

  761. as he

  762. says here,

  763. the psalmist,

  764. is in

  765. control.

  766. Now,

  767. what have

  768. we learned

  769. of God's

  770. will in

  771. our own

  772. lives?

  773. Even over

  774. these last

  775. few years,

  776. what have

  777. we learned

  778. of God's

  779. will?

  780. Maybe we've

  781. questioned it.

  782. We often

  783. end up in

  784. situations

  785. where we

  786. question God

  787. what he is

  788. doing,

  789. why he

  790. might be

  791. doing it.

  792. We often

  793. have these

  794. questions,

  795. but so

  796. does the

  797. psalmist.

  798. We see him

  799. in other

  800. psalms

  801. questioning,

  802. for example,

  803. how long,

  804. oh Lord?

  805. Why,

  806. oh Lord?

  807. He has

  808. these very

  809. same

  810. questions,

  811. but again

  812. and again,

  813. we see him

  814. coming back

  815. and recognizing

  816. that God

  817. is will

  818. is what

  819. we need.

  820. His will

  821. is dominant

  822. as you

  823. see in

  824. verse 10.

  825. The Lord

  826. brings the

  827. counsel of

  828. the nations

  829. to nothing.

  830. He frustrates

  831. the plans

  832. of the

  833. people.

  834. We all

  835. make plans.

  836. We've all

  837. had plans.

  838. We've all

  839. maybe had

  840. plans that

  841. have been

  842. cast into

  843. disarray in

  844. these last

  845. couple of

  846. years.

  847. Things we've

  848. had to

  849. postpone

  850. or put

  851. off.

  852. Our plans

  853. have often

  854. had to

  855. change,

  856. but God's

  857. plan hasn't

  858. changed.

  859. God's will

  860. hasn't

  861. changed.

  862. God,

  863. looking down

  864. on us as

  865. a people,

  866. as nations

  867. of the

  868. world,

  869. recognized

  870. how far

  871. away we

  872. were going

  873. from him,

  874. and he

  875. has brought

  876. this upon

  877. us to

  878. bring us

  879. back.

  880. But have

  881. we listened?

  882. Job in the

  883. Old Testament

  884. says in

  885. chapter 37,

  886. verse 5,

  887. God thunders

  888. wondrously with

  889. his voice.

  890. He does

  891. great things

  892. that we

  893. cannot

  894. comprehend.

  895. For to

  896. the snow,

  897. he says,

  898. fall on

  899. the earth.

  900. Likewise

  901. to the

  902. downpour,

  903. his mighty

  904. downpour.

  905. Everything

  906. is within

  907. God's grasp,

  908. within God's

  909. control.

  910. The snow,

  911. the downpour

  912. of rain,

  913. the wind,

  914. everything that

  915. happens,

  916. his will

  917. is dominant.

  918. His will

  919. will have

  920. the final

  921. word,

  922. his will

  923. be done.

  924. Psalm 115,

  925. another psalm

  926. says,

  927. but our

  928. God is

  929. in the

  930. heavens.

  931. He has

  932. done

  933. whatsoever

  934. he hath

  935. pleased.

  936. God is

  937. in control.

  938. We need

  939. not fear

  940. because God

  941. is in

  942. control of

  943. all things.

  944. And our

  945. greatest

  946. reminder of

  947. this is as

  948. we look to

  949. the Lord

  950. Jesus Christ.

  951. as a

  952. world

  953. looked on

  954. as he

  955. was

  956. crucified,

  957. they wondered

  958. what was

  959. happening.

  960. The disciples

  961. themselves

  962. were questioning

  963. what is

  964. going on

  965. here.

  966. As we

  967. look to

  968. the cross,

  969. our initial

  970. reaction would

  971. be, but

  972. why God?

  973. Why this?

  974. Why did

  975. he have to

  976. die for

  977. our sins?

  978. Because

  979. without the

  980. shedding of

  981. blood,

  982. there is no

  983. forgiveness

  984. of sin.

  985. God's

  986. will,

  987. God's

  988. way,

  989. God's

  990. way to

  991. salvation,

  992. prepared

  993. for his

  994. people.

  995. Jesus

  996. himself

  997. prayed in

  998. the Garden

  999. of Gethsemane,

  1000. not my

  1001. will,

  1002. but yours

  1003. be done.

  1004. May these

  1005. days teach

  1006. us not

  1007. to look to

  1008. ourselves

  1009. and to

  1010. our own

  1011. plans,

  1012. but to

  1013. seek the

  1014. will of

  1015. God in

  1016. all things,

  1017. to be

  1018. reconciled

  1019. to the

  1020. will of

  1021. God,

  1022. to pray,

  1023. Lord,

  1024. your

  1025. will be

  1026. done,

  1027. but to

  1028. pray,

  1029. Lord,

  1030. bless and

  1031. pity us.

  1032. Verse 11

  1033. shows us

  1034. that his

  1035. will is

  1036. determined.

  1037. The things

  1038. that occur in

  1039. this world,

  1040. while they're all

  1041. parts of God's

  1042. plan for the

  1043. ages,

  1044. nothing takes

  1045. place apart

  1046. from his

  1047. divine plan.

  1048. The counsel

  1049. of the Lord

  1050. stands forever,

  1051. the plans

  1052. of his

  1053. heart to

  1054. all

  1055. generations.

  1056. It's not

  1057. something that

  1058. often sits

  1059. comfortable with

  1060. people in

  1061. our day.

  1062. When we

  1063. struggle and

  1064. find it

  1065. hard, we

  1066. want to be

  1067. in control.

  1068. We want to

  1069. think that

  1070. our way is

  1071. best, but

  1072. the counsel

  1073. of the Lord

  1074. stands

  1075. forever.

  1076. Is that the

  1077. way you see

  1078. your life

  1079. playing out

  1080. just now?

  1081. Is that the

  1082. way we see

  1083. our nation

  1084. playing out

  1085. just now?

  1086. If it

  1087. isn't, we

  1088. may feel

  1089. scared of

  1090. what's

  1091. happening.

  1092. But the

  1093. truth is, we

  1094. need to

  1095. remember that

  1096. God is in

  1097. control.

  1098. God knows.

  1099. And isn't

  1100. it more

  1101. reason to

  1102. rejoice and

  1103. to be able to

  1104. praise God, to

  1105. know that he

  1106. is with us,

  1107. to know that

  1108. he will guide

  1109. us and help

  1110. us.

  1111. As verse 12

  1112. says,

  1113. blessed is the

  1114. nation whose

  1115. God is the

  1116. Lord.

  1117. the people

  1118. whom he has

  1119. chosen as

  1120. his heritage.

  1121. You are

  1122. blessed to

  1123. know God.

  1124. You are

  1125. blessed if

  1126. you are one

  1127. of his

  1128. chosen people.

  1129. When you

  1130. love the

  1131. Lord, you

  1132. are blessed.

  1133. And blessed

  1134. is the

  1135. nation whose

  1136. God is

  1137. the Lord.

  1138. There is so

  1139. much in

  1140. God's will,

  1141. but the

  1142. greatest thing

  1143. is this, it

  1144. is what we

  1145. are to

  1146. desire.

  1147. desire.

  1148. It is

  1149. what we

  1150. are to

  1151. desire.

  1152. The nation

  1153. is blessed

  1154. whose God

  1155. is the

  1156. Lord.

  1157. And when we

  1158. think of

  1159. Glasgow's

  1160. motto, it

  1161. took in

  1162. 1631.

  1163. When you

  1164. think of how

  1165. Glasgow

  1166. flourished, it

  1167. was a small

  1168. fishing village

  1169. back in those

  1170. days in the

  1171. banks of the

  1172. River Clyde,

  1173. and how it

  1174. grew into a

  1175. thriving industrial

  1176. city, famous

  1177. throughout the

  1178. world for

  1179. shipbuilding,

  1180. Clyde built

  1181. was a word

  1182. that spoke

  1183. about quality,

  1184. things that

  1185. would last.

  1186. The city

  1187. became known

  1188. as the second

  1189. city of the

  1190. British Empire,

  1191. such was

  1192. prosperity and

  1193. power in those

  1194. days.

  1195. Where is it

  1196. now?

  1197. Where is our

  1198. nation now?

  1199. When we ask

  1200. ourselves these

  1201. questions and we

  1202. think of dropping

  1203. the motto and

  1204. just saying,

  1205. let Glasgow

  1206. flourish, but

  1207. there's no

  1208. answer.

  1209. How?

  1210. Where do we

  1211. go?

  1212. Except the

  1213. Lord build the

  1214. house, the

  1215. builders build

  1216. in vain.

  1217. We are to

  1218. return to the

  1219. Lord.

  1220. We have

  1221. abandoned God,

  1222. but God

  1223. calls his

  1224. people back.

  1225. Blessed is the

  1226. nation whose

  1227. God is the

  1228. Lord.

  1229. We need to

  1230. long for and

  1231. ask God for

  1232. his blessing

  1233. on us.

  1234. that his

  1235. will be

  1236. done, that

  1237. we see his

  1238. blessing.

  1239. Like Psalm

  1240. 67, like

  1241. Psalm 85,

  1242. like the

  1243. Psalm itself

  1244. says, we

  1245. are to pray

  1246. for God to

  1247. revive us, to

  1248. restore us, to

  1249. rebuild us, to

  1250. bring us back

  1251. to himself.

  1252. Psalm 85, in

  1253. times past,

  1254. Lord, you

  1255. showed favor to

  1256. your own

  1257. beloved land.

  1258. God, your

  1259. Savior, now

  1260. restore us, is

  1261. the cry of the

  1262. Psalms.

  1263. will you

  1264. not again

  1265. revive us,

  1266. that we may

  1267. rejoice in

  1268. you.

  1269. God's will

  1270. is desirable.

  1271. It is what is

  1272. best for us,

  1273. because God

  1274. knows best.

  1275. So may his

  1276. word

  1277. fan our

  1278. flames, may

  1279. his will, may

  1280. we remind

  1281. ourselves that

  1282. he is in

  1283. control, that

  1284. his counsel

  1285. stands forever,

  1286. that we would

  1287. seek his

  1288. blessing.

  1289. then thirdly,

  1290. and finally, we

  1291. are reminded

  1292. here of too,

  1293. how God

  1294. watches over

  1295. us, and

  1296. how God is

  1297. so worthy

  1298. of all our

  1299. praise.

  1300. The Psalm

  1301. closes with the

  1302. assurance of

  1303. the worth of

  1304. God.

  1305. And when you

  1306. look at Psalm

  1307. verse 13, down

  1308. to the end,

  1309. it very much

  1310. speaks about how

  1311. the Lord is

  1312. looking on his

  1313. people.

  1314. The Lord

  1315. looks down

  1316. from heaven.

  1317. He sees the

  1318. children of

  1319. man, it

  1320. says in

  1321. verse 13.

  1322. And in

  1323. verse 18,

  1324. behold, the

  1325. eye of the

  1326. Lord is on

  1327. those who

  1328. fear him, on

  1329. those who

  1330. hope in

  1331. his steadfast

  1332. love.

  1333. His eyes

  1334. are on his

  1335. people.

  1336. He knows

  1337. our every

  1338. need.

  1339. He knows

  1340. our every

  1341. thought.

  1342. He knows

  1343. every motive

  1344. of our

  1345. heart.

  1346. He knows

  1347. everything there

  1348. is to know.

  1349. nothing is

  1350. hidden from

  1351. him.

  1352. And who

  1353. is comfortable

  1354. with that?

  1355. It's a

  1356. sobering

  1357. thought.

  1358. As the

  1359. children of

  1360. God, that

  1361. should be a

  1362. great comfort

  1363. to us.

  1364. He sees

  1365. all the

  1366. children of

  1367. man.

  1368. He sees

  1369. everyone.

  1370. Those who

  1371. are sitting

  1372. on thrones,

  1373. those who

  1374. are in

  1375. positions of

  1376. power,

  1377. those who

  1378. are kings,

  1379. who are

  1380. trusting in

  1381. their armies,

  1382. the warrior

  1383. who thinks

  1384. he'll be

  1385. delivered by

  1386. his great

  1387. strength.

  1388. All of

  1389. these he

  1390. sees.

  1391. But they're

  1392. not going to

  1393. be saved

  1394. in those

  1395. ways.

  1396. Because

  1397. verse 18

  1398. says,

  1399. behold,

  1400. the eye of

  1401. the Lord

  1402. is on

  1403. those who

  1404. fear him,

  1405. whose hope

  1406. is in

  1407. his steadfast

  1408. love.

  1409. He is

  1410. watching,

  1411. and he is

  1412. waiting for

  1413. his people.

  1414. He loves

  1415. his people.

  1416. He longs

  1417. for his

  1418. people to

  1419. find peace

  1420. with him

  1421. and is

  1422. watching.

  1423. He is

  1424. aware of

  1425. everything.

  1426. God

  1427. watches from

  1428. heaven.

  1429. He sees

  1430. people making

  1431. their plans.

  1432. He sees

  1433. the disarray

  1434. they often

  1435. end up in.

  1436. He sees

  1437. their efforts

  1438. to find

  1439. their own

  1440. way to

  1441. salvation.

  1442. And

  1443. sometimes we

  1444. might think

  1445. he forgets

  1446. us, but

  1447. he never

  1448. does.

  1449. He sees

  1450. it all.

  1451. One day

  1452. he is going

  1453. to judge

  1454. the wicked,

  1455. and he is

  1456. going to

  1457. judge the

  1458. just according

  1459. to their

  1460. works.

  1461. He looks

  1462. down and

  1463. sees it

  1464. all, and

  1465. we can take

  1466. great comfort

  1467. in that.

  1468. The eye

  1469. of the

  1470. Lord is

  1471. upon us.

  1472. And as

  1473. well as being

  1474. aware of

  1475. everything that

  1476. goes on,

  1477. he is

  1478. watching

  1479. with

  1480. affection.

  1481. I think

  1482. that's what

  1483. the psalmist

  1484. is saying

  1485. to us here

  1486. as well.

  1487. He is

  1488. watching his

  1489. people with

  1490. such great

  1491. affection.

  1492. His eye

  1493. is on those

  1494. who fear

  1495. him, that

  1496. he may

  1497. deliver their

  1498. soul from

  1499. death and

  1500. keep them

  1501. alive in

  1502. famine.

  1503. He's

  1504. showing his

  1505. affection towards

  1506. his people.

  1507. When you

  1508. look around

  1509. the congregation

  1510. in these

  1511. days, there

  1512. are a few

  1513. newlyweds in

  1514. our midst.

  1515. There are

  1516. a few

  1517. oldieweds in

  1518. our midst

  1519. as well.

  1520. When you

  1521. see newlyweds,

  1522. they often

  1523. look at

  1524. each other

  1525. with that

  1526. sense of

  1527. longing,

  1528. that sense

  1529. of love.

  1530. Thankfully,

  1531. as we grow

  1532. older,

  1533. hopefully that

  1534. affection still

  1535. stays.

  1536. You have

  1537. that look

  1538. of love

  1539. towards the

  1540. one you

  1541. love.

  1542. love.

  1543. Well, God

  1544. is here

  1545. reminding us

  1546. of his

  1547. affection towards

  1548. us, the

  1549. way he

  1550. looks upon

  1551. us in

  1552. his steadfast

  1553. love, a

  1554. love that

  1555. never grows

  1556. cold, a

  1557. love that

  1558. never diminishes,

  1559. a love that

  1560. is fixed on

  1561. his children.

  1562. Our God

  1563. looks down

  1564. on us with

  1565. that love.

  1566. And when

  1567. you think

  1568. of the

  1569. way the

  1570. Lord Jesus

  1571. speaks,

  1572. in his

  1573. high priestly

  1574. prayer in

  1575. John 17,

  1576. or on the

  1577. cross, he

  1578. speaks with

  1579. such love

  1580. and affection

  1581. that we

  1582. might know

  1583. this love

  1584. for ourselves.

  1585. So the

  1586. Lord looks

  1587. down in

  1588. love on

  1589. us.

  1590. The question

  1591. tonight as we

  1592. conclude is,

  1593. how do we

  1594. look on

  1595. him?

  1596. Is our

  1597. love a

  1598. reciprocation

  1599. of his

  1600. love to

  1601. us?

  1602. We can

  1603. say, as

  1604. John says,

  1605. we love

  1606. because he

  1607. first loved

  1608. us.

  1609. But are we

  1610. showing that

  1611. love?

  1612. Do we

  1613. love him

  1614. with all

  1615. our hearts?

  1616. The

  1617. psalmist

  1618. here says,

  1619. our soul

  1620. waits for

  1621. the Lord.

  1622. He is

  1623. our help

  1624. and our

  1625. shield.

  1626. But our

  1627. heart is

  1628. glad in

  1629. him because

  1630. we trust in

  1631. his holy

  1632. name.

  1633. Is that

  1634. your love

  1635. tonight?

  1636. As we

  1637. look ahead

  1638. to these

  1639. days, to

  1640. hearing his

  1641. word preached,

  1642. to knowing his

  1643. will is done,

  1644. to knowing that

  1645. he is watching

  1646. us with

  1647. such love,

  1648. are we

  1649. reciprocating

  1650. that love?

  1651. I love

  1652. the Lord

  1653. because my

  1654. voice and

  1655. prayers he

  1656. did hear.

  1657. That's what the

  1658. psalmist says in

  1659. Psalm 116.

  1660. May that be

  1661. our love

  1662. too, that

  1663. we love

  1664. him with

  1665. all our

  1666. heart and

  1667. that we

  1668. will come

  1669. and show

  1670. that love

  1671. by coming

  1672. to the

  1673. Lord's

  1674. table,

  1675. by professing

  1676. his name

  1677. and by

  1678. showing forth

  1679. his death

  1680. until he

  1681. come.

  1682. And as the

  1683. psalm concludes,

  1684. may that be

  1685. our prayer

  1686. too.

  1687. Let your

  1688. steadfast love,

  1689. O Lord,

  1690. be upon us

  1691. even as we

  1692. hope in

  1693. you.

  1694. May we

  1695. hope in

  1696. him with

  1697. all our

  1698. heart and

  1699. look longingly

  1700. to him as

  1701. we seek his

  1702. blessing and

  1703. his favour

  1704. upon us.

  1705. May God

  1706. bless his

  1707. word to

  1708. us.

  1709. We're going

  1710. to sing

  1711. in conclusion

  1712. some of

  1713. these verses

  1714. from the

  1715. song.
