  1. We're going to begin our service then, friends, worshipping God by singing to his praise from Psalm 103.

  2. Psalm 103 in Sing Psalms.

  3. That's on page 135 of the Blue Psalm books, reading at the beginning of the psalm, Psalm 103.

  4. Praise God my soul with all my heart, let me exalt his holy name.

  5. Forget not all his benefits, his praise my soul in song proclaim.

  6. The Lord forgives you all your sins and heals your sickness and distress.

  7. Your life he rescues from the grave and crowns you in his tenderness.

  8. We'll sing down to the end of the verse marked 11 to the praise of God, standing to sing,

  9. Praise God my soul with all my heart.

  10. Praise God my soul with all my heart.

  11. Let me exalt his holy name.

  12. Forget not all his benefits, his praise my soul in song proclaim.

  13. The Lord forgives you all your sins and heals your sickness and distress.

  14. Your life he rescues from the grave and crowns you in his tenderness.

  15. He satisfies your deep desire.

  16. He satisfies your deep desire.

  17. From his unending source of good.

  18. So that just like the evil strength, your youth will be her is renewed.

  19. The Lord is known for righteous acts, and justice to the God in once.

  20. Till Moses he made known his ways.

  21. His mighty days to Israel's sons.

  22. The Lord is merciful and kind.

  23. To thine best, low and full of grace.

  24. He will not constantly do.

  25. For in his anger hide his days.

  26. He does not banish our mercies.

  27. For he has been their just reward.

  28. And great his love as high as men.

  29. To hearts alone, to fear the Lord.

  30. Amen.

  31. Friends, let's unite our hearts in prayer.

  32. Let us pray.

  33. Lord our God, we come and we seek this evening to know what it is to worship you in spirit and in truth.

  34. That we are a people who are richly blessed as we reflect this evening upon the reason of our gathering.

  35. That we gather together in order to come before the King of kings, the Lord of lords, the one who is high and lifted up.

  36. The one who is infinite, eternal and unchangeable.

  37. What a wonder it is that this is our desire.

  38. To come and to worship.

  39. And as we gather, O Lord, at this time, we pray that we might know something of your Holy Spirit leading us and guiding us to those fountains of living water.

  40. That our gathering together would not be born out of any routine or ritual.

  41. But rather that we would come with that sense of expectation.

  42. Expecting you to fulfill your promise to your people.

  43. That where two or three gather in your name.

  44. You promised to be there in their midst.

  45. And so we pray that indeed we would be here in the name of Jesus Christ.

  46. That you would honor this promise.

  47. And that we would be able to say it was good for us to meet.

  48. You are worthy of all praise and adoration.

  49. Not least because although you are the God who inhabits eternity, you are the God who draws nigh to sinners just like us.

  50. You are a God who accommodates our weakness and our infirmities.

  51. You are a God who meets us at our very point of need.

  52. You accommodate our finite mind by revealing yourself to us in a way that we can understand.

  53. And for this we give thanks.

  54. We give thanks for your word.

  55. This special revelation of not only who you are, but who we can be in you.

  56. What a blessing it is that for many of us here tonight, we can say that indeed we are in Christ.

  57. That our identity is not found in anything in this world.

  58. Not even in ourselves.

  59. But in the one who died and gave himself for us.

  60. The one who cried out upon that cross.

  61. It is finished.

  62. So that for us, our life would just begin.

  63. And so as we reflect upon the wonders of such an identity, we pray that all the more we would find ourselves coming and worshiping your name.

  64. Individually and collectively as a people who you tell us is your beloved bride.

  65. We know that indeed we are those who have been chosen from all eternity.

  66. We know not why and in many ways we cannot understand the depths of such wonders.

  67. But yet we believe.

  68. We believe that you are God and that there is none other.

  69. And that in this very act of faith, we come and we cling on to you as the only one for life and for death.

  70. And Lord, we pray this evening for all who gather here.

  71. Those who perhaps are unable to identify as of yet as a child of God.

  72. Those who are perhaps wandering aimlessly in the wilderness as we once were ourselves.

  73. That you would be with them even this evening.

  74. That you would speak to them mightily by your word through your spirit.

  75. That you would bring them to that place where they recognize their need of you.

  76. For indeed what should it profit a man if he should gain the whole world and lose his soul?

  77. What shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

  78. Help us to see the brevity of time.

  79. The time is short and eternity is long.

  80. And that in light of this, we would make our calling and election sure by coming and laying hold of these promises by faith.

  81. That those who seek will find.

  82. Those who knock will have that door opened unto them.

  83. And so we pray also for any gathered here this evening who as of yet are to profess your name publicly.

  84. Those who perhaps do identify in their hearts as a child of God.

  85. But have not come out and publicly shown that they have been bought by the precious blood of Christ.

  86. Help them we pray even this evening as your word goes out.

  87. That it would encourage them and draw them and strengthen them.

  88. To truly know the blessing that follows such obedience.

  89. We know that Satan is like a roaring lion seeking whom he might devour.

  90. He is the accuser of the brethren.

  91. He is the one who even at this time is whispering in our ears and telling us that we are his.

  92. Forgive us, O Lord, for listening to his voice.

  93. Forgive us for doubting our salvation.

  94. Forgive us for the many times that we lose sight of the fact that our security is not in our own righteousness.

  95. But in the righteousness of another.

  96. And so we pray then that you would be with this dear congregation in the days that lie ahead.

  97. We give thanks for their witness here in the town of Stornoway.

  98. That this would be a continued witness.

  99. That they would shine as a beacon of light in a dark world.

  100. And that they would seek to reach out with the good news of the gospel.

  101. We pray for this new ministry that has commenced.

  102. We give thanks for it, for Calamordo.

  103. And we pray that as he partners in the gospel with James.

  104. That together they will see great things happening.

  105. Not only in terms of a leadership team.

  106. But as a congregation.

  107. That they would all have that shared vision and purpose.

  108. To go out and to, as it were, from one beggar to another.

  109. Show them where to get food.

  110. What a wonder it is.

  111. That you have not left us to ourselves.

  112. But you have provided for us that way of salvation.

  113. Help us then to be reminded of its urgency.

  114. And to seek with every fiber of our being.

  115. To fulfill that calling that is ours.

  116. To make disciples of all nations.

  117. And so we pray that you would bless our time together this evening.

  118. And also every other congregation that is meeting in a like manner.

  119. We pray your hand of blessing upon the ministry of your word.

  120. Wherever it goes out.

  121. That it would go out with sincerity and with power.

  122. That it would penetrate hearts.

  123. So that men and women, boys and girls.

  124. Would be fed and nourished in their souls.

  125. That they would be drawn even from darkness.

  126. Into your own most marvelous light.

  127. And so be with us now we pray.

  128. Forgive us for all our many sins.

  129. And all we ask, we ask in Jesus name.

  130. Amen.

  131. Well we're going to continue singing to God's praise.

  132. This time from Psalm 106.

  133. Psalm 106 in the Scottish Psalter.

  134. This is on page 378.

  135. Psalm 106.

  136. We can pick up a reading from verse 4.

  137. Psalm 106 and verse 4.

  138. Remember me Lord with that love.

  139. Which thou to thine dost bear.

  140. With thy salvation, O my God.

  141. To visit me draw near.

  142. That I thy chosen good may see.

  143. And in their joy rejoice.

  144. And may with thine inheritance triumph with cheerful voice.

  145. Let's lift up our voices and praise.

  146. Let's lift up our voices and praise from Psalm 106.

  147. Verse 4.

  148. Standing to sing.

  149. Remember me Lord with that love.

  150. Remember me Lord with that love.

  151. For the love of that love.

  152. Which thou to light us bear.

  153. With thy salvation, O my God.

  154. To visit me draw near.

  155. That I thy chosen to be.

  156. To be.

  157. That I thy chosen to be.

  158. To be.

  159. For the love of that love.

  160. To be.

  161. To be.

  162. To be.

  163. To be.

  164. To be.

  165. To be.

  166. Is it me, John, near

  167. That I, thy chosen to deceive

  168. And in their joy rejoice

  169. And here with thine inheritance

  170. Triumph with cheerful voice

  171. We with our fathers

  172. Say it, God

  173. Act of iniquity

  174. Too long we have the workers' feet

  175. We have done wickedly

  176. Thou wonders great wish

  177. That, O Lord, this work

  178. In each of our

  179. Our fathers

  180. All they saw yet well

  181. It did not understand

  182. And may thy mercy

  183. Is not assured

  184. Yet not in memory

  185. But at the sea

  186. In mercy

  187. Provoked in grieveously

  188. Never the rest

  189. He saved the dead

  190. Been for his own name's sake

  191. That so he might

  192. To be well

  193. Lord

  194. His mighty power

  195. May

  196. Well, friends, let us now turn

  197. To read the word of God together

  198. We're going to read from the Old Testament

  199. And from the book of Joshua

  200. Joshua chapter 4

    Joshua 4 chapter mention

  201. We'll read the whole chapter together

  202. Let us hear the word of God

  203. When all the nation had finished

  204. Passing over the Jordan

  205. The Lord said to Joshua

  206. Take twelve men from the people

  207. From each tribe a man

  208. And command them saying

  209. Take twelve stones from here

  210. Out of the midst of the Jordan

  211. From the very place

  212. Where the priest's feet stood firmly

  213. And bring them over with you

  214. And lay them down in the place

  215. Where you lodge tonight

  216. Then Joshua called the twelve men

  217. From the people of Israel

  218. Whom he had appointed

  219. A man from each tribe

  220. And Joshua said to them

  221. Pass on before the ark

  222. Of the Lord your God

  223. Into the midst of the Jordan

  224. And take up each of you

  225. A stone upon his shoulder

  226. According to the number of tribes

  227. Of the people of Israel

  228. That this may be a sign

  229. Among you

  230. When your children ask

  231. In time to come

  232. What do these stones

  233. Mean to you

  234. Then you shall tell them

  235. That the waters of the Jordan

  236. Were cut off

  237. Before the ark of the covenant

  238. Of the Lord

  239. When it passed over the Jordan

  240. The waters of the Jordan

  241. Were cut off

  242. So these stones

  243. Shall be to the people of Israel

  244. A memorial forever

  245. And the people of Israel

  246. Did just as Joshua commanded

  247. And took up twelve stones

  248. Out of the midst of the Jordan

  249. According to the number

  250. Of the tribes

  251. Of the people of Israel

  252. Just as the Lord

  253. Told Joshua

  254. And they carried them

  255. Over with them

  256. To the place

  257. Where they lodged

  258. And laid them down there

  259. And Joshua set up

  260. Twelve stones

  261. In the midst of the Jordan

  262. In the place

  263. Where the feet

  264. Of the priests

  265. Bading the ark

  266. Of the covenant

  267. Had stood

  268. And there they are

  269. To this day

  270. For the priests

  271. Bading the ark

  272. Stood in the midst

  273. Of the Jordan

  274. Until everything

  275. Was finished

  276. That the Lord

  277. Commanded Joshua

  278. To tell the people

  279. According to all

  280. That Moses

  281. Had commanded Joshua

  282. The people

  283. Passed over in haste

  284. And when all the people

  285. Had finished passing over

  286. The ark of the Lord

  287. And the priests

  288. Passed over

  289. Before the people

  290. The sons of Reuben

  291. And the sons of Gad

  292. And half the tribe

  293. Of Manasseh

  294. Passed over

  295. Armed before the people

  296. Of Israel

  297. As Moses had told them

  298. About forty thousand

  299. Ready for war

  300. Passed over

  301. Before the Lord

  302. For battle

  303. To the plains

  304. Of Jericho

  305. On that day

  306. The Lord exalted Joshua

  307. In the sight

  308. Of all Israel

  309. And they stood

  310. In awe of him

  311. Just as they had

  312. Stood in awe of Moses

  313. All the days

  314. Of his life

  315. And the Lord

  316. Said to Joshua

  317. Command the priests

  318. Bearing the ark

  319. Of the testimony

  320. To come up

  321. Out of the Jordan

  322. So Joshua

  323. Commanded the priests

  324. Come up

  325. Out of the Jordan

  326. And when the priests

  327. Bearing the ark

  328. Of the covenant

  329. Of the Lord

  330. Came up from the midst

  331. Of the Jordan

  332. And the souls

  333. Of the priests

  334. Were lifted up

  335. On dry ground

  336. The waters of the Jordan

  337. Returned to their place

  338. And overflowed

  339. All its banks

  340. As before

  341. The people came up

  342. Out of the Jordan

  343. On the tenth day

  344. Of the first month

  345. And they encamped

  346. At Gilgal

  347. On the east border

  348. Of Jericho

  349. And those twelve stones

  350. Which they took

  351. Out of the Jordan

  352. Joshua set up

  353. At Gilgal

  354. And he said

  355. To the people

  356. Of Israel

  357. When your children

  358. Ask their fathers

  359. In time to come

  360. What do these stones mean?

  361. Then you shall let

  362. Your children know

  363. Israel passed over

  364. This Jordan

  365. On dry ground

  366. For the Lord

  367. Your God

  368. Dried up

  369. The waters

  370. Of the Jordan

  371. For you

  372. Until you passed over

  373. As the Lord

  374. Your God

  375. Did to the Red Sea

  376. Which he dried up

  377. For us

  378. Until we passed over

  379. So that all

  380. The peoples

  381. Of the earth

  382. May know

  383. That the hand

  384. Of the Lord

  385. Is mighty

  386. And that you

  387. May fear the Lord

  388. Your God

  389. Forever

  390. Amen

  391. And we pray

  392. God's blessing

  393. On that reading

  394. Of his own

  395. Holy word

  396. Let's once again

  397. Sing praise to God

  398. This time from

  399. Psalm 20

  400. Psalm 20

  401. Again in the

  402. Scottish Psalter

  403. We're going to

  404. Read from verse 5

  405. This is on page

  406. 224

  407. Psalm 20

  408. And verse 5

  409. In thy salvation

  410. We will joy

  411. In our God's name

  412. We will

  413. Display our banners

  414. And the Lord

  415. Thy prayers

  416. All fulfill

  417. Now know I God

  418. His King

  419. Doth save

  420. He from his

  421. Holy heaven

  422. Will hear him

  423. With the saving

  424. Strength

  425. By his

  426. Own right

  427. Hand

  428. Given

  429. We'll sing down

  430. To the end of the verse

  431. To the end of the psalm

  432. Rather

  433. To the praise of God

  434. Standing to sing

  435. In thy salvation

  436. We will joy

  437. In thy salvation

  438. We will joy

  439. In our God's name

  440. We will

  441. Tis

  442. Now know I magazines

  443. O my God, his gift has saved him from his holy hand.

  444. We'll hear him with the saving strength, by his own right and clear.

  445. In chariots sounded, all fiddeth, some horses passed upon.

  446. The dear remember, well, the name of our Lord God alone.

  447. We rise and up, but stand where they are, how it come and fall.

  448. Deliver, Lord, and let the king pass here when we do call.

  449. Well, friends, just for a short time this evening, if we could turn back to Joshua chapter 4.

    Joshua 4 chapter mention

  450. Joshua chapter 4, and we can read again from verse 19.

    Joshua 4 chapter mention

  451. The people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month,

  452. and they encamped at Gilgal on the east border of Jericho.

  453. And those twelve stones which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up at Gilgal.

  454. And he said to the people of Israel,

  455. When your children ask their fathers in times to come, what do these stones mean?

  456. Then you shall let your children know.

  457. Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground.

  458. For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over,

  459. as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up for us until we passed over.

  460. So that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty,

  461. that you may fear the Lord your God forever.

  462. I wonder, friends, if there's anyone here tonight who would say that they have an especially bad memory.

  463. They find it difficult to remember things.

  464. I know myself.

  465. I find it difficult at times to remember dates.

  466. And I need to be reminded.

  467. And of course, I suppose it's a case for all of us in many ways.

  468. Our lives are governed by diaries and by schedules.

  469. We're apt to forget.

  470. That is the nature of who we are.

  471. We have short memories.

  472. There are few people, of course, who are gifted with good memories.

  473. Those who remember every last detail of every last situation.

  474. Those who remember every last date that's on their calendar in the year that's ahead of them.

  475. But generally speaking, we have poor memories.

  476. We are apt to forget.

  477. And friends, as we gather here this Friday evening, we praise the Lord.

  478. We praise the Lord because he is a God of mercy and of grace and of love.

  479. He is a God who meets us at our very point of need.

  480. He knows who we are and what we're like.

  481. He knows our infirmities.

  482. He knows our struggles.

  483. He knows our challenges.

  484. He knows our trials.

  485. He knows our tribulations.

  486. Whatever you're going through tonight, perhaps no one else in here knows, but he knows.

  487. And the wonder of who our God is, is this.

  488. That he accommodates us.

  489. He accommodates us at our point of need.

  490. I said that in prayer.

  491. A God who is infinite, eternal and unchangeable.

  492. A God who inhabits eternity and yet he reveals himself to us through words.

  493. He doesn't need to do this.

  494. But he does.

  495. He accommodates our limitations.

  496. And in terms of our memory, he does the same.

  497. That's why we're here tonight.

  498. And we see that, do we not, throughout Scripture.

  499. That because we as human beings, due to our sinful fallen nature, we are those who forget time and time again.

  500. He is a God who meets us at our point of need and who prompts us to remember.

  501. You remember in Exodus 12, what do we see there?

  502. Well, we see that after God has saved his people, he does what?

  503. Well, he passes over the houses, does he not?

  504. And he puts blood on the lintels of those who he's going to save.

  505. He saves his people.

  506. And of course, in response to saving his people, he knows that his people will forget.

  507. So what does he do?

  508. He institutes the Passover, this time where they would gather together and they would remember as a people that great deliverance from God to safety.

  509. Of course, that's what we see here tonight.

  510. Not only in the chapter that we read, but also in our own experience.

  511. Because as we reflect upon how the Lord deals with us, we see that he's continuing to prompt us to remember.

  512. Take, for example, the Lord's Day.

  513. Today, we are a people who are so busy in life.

  514. We have so much consuming our time and our energy.

  515. But yet the Lord, in his love and in his mercy, he gives us this one day that we can set aside things that so take up our time.

  516. And we can focus on gathering with his people and worshipping his name.

  517. Why?

  518. Because we forget.

  519. I spoke to some in lockdown.

  520. Perhaps you yourself would be able to testify to this as well.

  521. That during lockdown, when we didn't have that routine of gathering together as God's people,

  522. before we knew it, yes, we would watch sermons online.

  523. But before we knew it, the Lord's Day began to become just like any other day.

  524. And we could see, if we're being honest, and good Christian people have confessed to this,

  525. being honest, that yes, we found ourselves as a people, once we had got our services out of the way,

  526. doing what we wanted with the rest of the day.

  527. That's the way we are by nature.

  528. Left to ourselves, we forget.

  529. And so that's why the Lord gives us this Lord's Day, not as a bind, but as a blessing.

  530. A blessing to remind us.

  531. To remind us of what?

  532. To remind us of that great resurrection power.

  533. So that we can gather together as his people, and that we can celebrate, because that's what it is, a celebration.

  534. We can celebrate that victory that is ours in him, that he is not dead, he is risen.

  535. That's what the Lord's Day is.

  536. It's for our good.

  537. And we come to a passage here tonight in Joshua 4,

  538. and we see that the Lord is reminding the people for their good.

  539. The context of this chapter is, of course, the exodus of the children of Israel.

  540. They are making their way to the promised land.

  541. They've had the Jordan parted for them, and they've had the path made clear,

  542. so that after decades of wandering in the wilderness,

  543. finally, eventually, they make their way to Canaan's shore.

  544. That land that God had promised long since would be a land that is flowing with milk,

  545. milk, and honey.

  546. You know the story.

  547. I don't need to go into it in detail.

  548. We don't have time to go into that side of the story in detail.

  549. But we know that they were a people who were making no progress.

  550. They had been offered this freedom that God had given to them to lay hold of by faith,

  551. and yet time and time again, they thought they were better off where they were.

  552. Sounds familiar.

  553. Maybe you're like that here tonight.

  554. Maybe you're not a Christian.

  555. And you're here tonight, and you know of the gospel message.

  556. You know of the freedom that's offered in the pages of Scripture,

  557. Lord's Day after Lord's Day in your head,

  558. but not in your heart.

  559. And perhaps you refuse to acknowledge it in your heart because you're scared.

  560. And because you're scared, you're happy to settle for the status quo.

  561. As it were, as I once was myself and every one of the Lord's people here,

  562. going round and round in circles, perhaps even for decades in this wilderness,

  563. when all along there is something so much better on offer.

  564. That land that is flowing with milk and honey.

  565. That place where there is freedom and joy and liberty.

  566. That place where you can say, as I said in prayer,

  567. I am in Christ.

  568. And what a place that is to be in our souls.

  569. And so they make their way through the Jordan.

  570. We know the narrative.

  571. We know the story.

  572. But that's not the end of the story.

  573. That's not the end of the Jordan narrative.

  574. Because as the Israelites find themselves safe on the other side,

  575. before they can move on to the next part of their journey,

  576. the next chapter in their experience to go on and to conquer the land,

  577. they're stopped.

  578. They're asked to pause.

  579. To reflect.

  580. And in this reflection,

  581. essentially what they're being asked to do is

  582. is to ensure that they don't forget what the Lord has just done for them.

  583. And of course, looking at what the Lord has just done for them,

  584. he's parted the seas.

  585. So that the sea was, as it were, a wall on either side of them.

  586. This miraculous phenomena took place before their very eyes.

  587. This wasn't something that they would have been seeing every day.

  588. This was something, a sight to behold even for themselves.

  589. And so we might say, well, of course they won't forget.

  590. How could they ever forget what the Lord has just done for them?

  591. This will be etched upon their minds for as long as they live.

  592. But of course they would forget.

  593. If not reminded,

  594. they were fallen human beings,

  595. apt to forget like you and like me.

  596. And so what does the Lord do?

  597. Well, he accommodates again in his mercy and in his love.

  598. He accommodates their weakness.

  599. How?

  600. Well, let's look together at verses 1 to 3.

  601. When all the nation had finished passing over the Jordan,

  602. the Lord said to Joshua,

  603. take 12 men from the people,

  604. from each tribe a man,

  605. and command them, saying,

  606. take 12 stones from here,

  607. out of the midst of the Jordan,

  608. from the very place where the priest's feet stood firmly,

  609. and bring them over with you,

  610. and lay them down in the place where you lodge tonight.

  611. So basically what they were to do was this,

  612. that one of each of the tribes of Israel,

  613. one man from the tribes of Israel,

  614. this was, of course,

  615. representing God's people as a whole.

  616. We see the collective of God's people coming together,

  617. of course,

  618. we know that two and a half of the tribes

  619. had gone on before previously

  620. to make their home in the promised land.

  621. They had pledged to come back

  622. and to help their brethren in the Lord

  623. when the time would come,

  624. and of course that time has come,

  625. and so they all joined together

  626. to send out one man to the riverbed

  627. and to take a stone on their shoulder.

  628. Now we can see that this was a large stone.

  629. It wasn't a small stone.

  630. It was one that would have to go on their shoulder,

  631. a large stone.

  632. And so 12 large stones made their way

  633. from the riverbed up to the riverbank.

  634. That's where they were to stay the night, in Gilgal.

  635. And what they were to do with these stones

  636. was to build a monument.

  637. We don't know what this monument would have looked like.

  638. In my own mind, I have a picture

  639. of what we would call a cairn.

  640. You see them on our island.

  641. I know in Ness, in Skigersta,

  642. there are two cairns out at a place called the Ka.

  643. They're built up with stones.

  644. They're a monument of something,

  645. of what I'm not quite sure,

  646. but of something.

  647. There's another monument further out

  648. called the Karnangyal.

  649. This is a cairn that's speaking of a geologist

  650. who, in years gone by,

  651. worked in that part of Ness.

  652. There's a war memorial in Stornoway,

  653. a far more conspicuous monument,

  654. a cairn, one that testifies

  655. to the men who died in the war.

  656. There are cairns, there are monuments

  657. all around us.

  658. And so that's what they're asked to do,

  659. to build a monument,

  660. to build a cairn.

  661. But as we look at verse 9, friends,

  662. we might begin to get a little bit confused.

  663. Because there we read this,

  664. and Joshua set up twelve stones

  665. in the midst of the Jordan,

  666. in the place where the feet of the priests

  667. bearing the Ark of the Covenant had stood.

  668. And there they are to this day.

  669. So is there one monument?

  670. Or is there two?

  671. Is there one on the banks of the Jordan

  672. and one in the middle of the Jordan?

  673. This raises the question.

  674. And of course,

  675. commentators differ on this.

  676. Even commentators of the same

  677. Reformed tradition

  678. will differ on their opinion

  679. as to whether there are two monuments

  680. or one monument.

  681. Some who say that there's just one monument

  682. would say that when this is speaking

  683. of the twelve stones set

  684. in the midst of the Jordan,

  685. that the Hebrew would allude

  686. to a translation that says

  687. that Joshua had set up the stones

  688. that had been in the midst of the Jordan.

  689. So that he had taken up the stones

  690. that had been in the midst of the Jordan.

  691. And as we read the passage as a whole,

  692. and as we read the comments

  693. on the Cairn and Gilgal,

  694. I think myself that this is most likely.

  695. When we think logically

  696. about there being a monument,

  697. a Cairn in the middle of the River Jordan,

  698. we would see that this poses

  699. its own difficulties

  700. if we look at verse 18.

  701. And when the priests

  702. bearing the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord

  703. came up from the midst of the Jordan,

  704. and the souls of the priests

  705. were lifted on dry ground,

  706. the waters of the Jordan returned

  707. to their place

  708. and overflowed all of its banks

  709. as before.

  710. The waters returned.

  711. So that the valley of the Jordan River,

  712. which went from 15 to 60 meters,

  713. it was now full of water.

  714. So that any stones,

  715. any Cairns that had been built

  716. in the middle of it

  717. would either not be able to be seen,

  718. which would defeat the whole purpose of them,

  719. or would more likely be washed away.

  720. But either way,

  721. whether there's one or there's two,

  722. what we know is this,

  723. that this monument was set there

  724. as a reminder.

  725. That was its purpose,

  726. to be a reminder.

  727. But who was it to remind?

  728. And what was it to remind them of?

  729. Well, there are two or three things

  730. for us to consider.

  731. We read in verse 6

  732. that they were to make this a sign among you,

  733. so that when your children ask in time to come,

  734. what do these stones mean?

  735. What do these stones mean to you?

  736. Then you shall tell them.

  737. Then you shall tell them.

  738. And these stones were there

  739. to provoke conversation,

  740. to stimulate discussion,

  741. just as any Cairns or monument does today.

  742. It was to be a talking point.

  743. What do these stones mean?

  744. Verse 21.

  745. And he said to the people of Israel,

  746. when your children ask their fathers

  747. in times to come,

  748. what do these stones mean?

  749. Then you shall let your children know.

  750. Israel passed over this Jordan

  751. on dry ground.

  752. For the Lord your God

  753. dried up the waters of the Jordan for you

  754. until you passed over,

  755. as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea,

  756. which he dried up for us

  757. until we passed over.

  758. Can you see, friends,

  759. the purpose of this monument?

  760. That this monument would be a talking point,

  761. not only for the children of Israel.

  762. This is a small detail,

  763. but it's a significant detail.

  764. And that's the wonder of Scripture.

  765. The Lord includes these small details,

  766. these small accommodations

  767. for our weaknesses

  768. so that we don't forget.

  769. And that's exactly what this monument would do.

  770. It would go on to act as a reminder

  771. to the generations to come,

  772. what the Lord had done.

  773. People would say,

  774. well, what does this mean?

  775. What do these stones mean?

  776. And those who would have heard it told to them

  777. by their fathers,

  778. who had been told by their fathers,

  779. would say,

  780. well, these stones tell a story.

  781. They tell a story of the wonder

  782. and the power of the God of Israel

  783. who delivered his people.

  784. Do you know that God?

  785. Do you know that God?

  786. Get to know that God.

  787. He's a great God

  788. who can do wonders for you.

  789. And so conversations would be stimulated

  790. for years to come.

  791. These are stones that speak.

  792. And of course,

  793. as the Israelites themselves

  794. went on to conquer the land of Canaan,

  795. they would be overwhelmed, no doubt,

  796. as they were faced with the magnitude

  797. of what lay ahead of them,

  798. the paralyzing fear

  799. of the daunting task that was before them

  800. to conquer the enemy.

  801. They would forget.

  802. Quite quickly, they would forget.

  803. How often do you and I forget?

  804. We're faced with something that's difficult.

  805. We're faced with something,

  806. if we're being honest in our mind's eye,

  807. we say it's too difficult,

  808. even for God.

  809. And we forget.

  810. In that blur of anxiety and of fear,

  811. we forget.

  812. We forget that this is the self-same God

  813. who has delivered us in times past.

  814. This is the self-same God

  815. who seeks to lead us

  816. to that place of safety and of refuge,

  817. but still we forget.

  818. We need reminded.

  819. We need reminded.

  820. And so for us here tonight, friends,

  821. these stones speak.

  822. They speak to us.

  823. They speak to you and to me.

  824. And what do they say?

  825. Well, they say plenty.

  826. Because if you're here tonight

  827. and you're a Christian,

  828. the reality is that you too

  829. have a memorial in your life,

  830. your own personal memorial.

  831. You have that marker

  832. that you can go back to in your mind's eye,

  833. that point in time.

  834. It might be a specific hour,

  835. day, week, month, year,

  836. couple of years,

  837. whatever it is.

  838. You have a time in your mind's eye,

  839. a period whereby you know

  840. that the Lord did something miraculous

  841. in your life.

  842. Perhaps you can't remember a time

  843. in your life when you weren't the Lord's.

  844. That's also the case for some.

  845. Some are converted so young

  846. that they cannot recollect this time,

  847. but still you know the Lord

  848. has done something miraculous

  849. in your life.

  850. He didn't part the Jordan,

  851. but what he did was this.

  852. He parted your heart.

  853. He opened your heart

  854. so that you could receive Jesus Christ

  855. as your Lord and your Savior.

  856. So much more miraculous

  857. than anything we read here before us.

  858. And when we're first converted,

  859. when we have our hearts opened

  860. in such a way,

  861. is it not true, friends?

  862. We're so full.

  863. We're so full of zeal

  864. and vigor and wonder

  865. and awe

  866. as we look back upon

  867. what Jesus has just done

  868. in our lives.

  869. Just as the children of Israel

  870. were here

  871. as they reflected at Gilgal

  872. on what the Lord had just done,

  873. they couldn't believe it

  874. and so it is with us.

  875. When we see lambs,

  876. as it were, coming,

  877. we pray for more.

  878. We can almost see it in their face.

  879. face.

  880. This brightness,

  881. this vigor,

  882. this zeal,

  883. that something wonderful

  884. has taken place

  885. in their lives.

  886. and we think that will never end.

  887. That we'll always be on that mountaintop.

  888. And how disappointed we are

  889. when we come crashing down to earth

  890. with a bang.

  891. And so we do.

  892. And so we do.

  893. And as we're left, as it were,

  894. to, not left,

  895. but as we're called

  896. to go on

  897. and to live that life

  898. of faith,

  899. it can be difficult.

  900. So much so

  901. that we lose sight

  902. of what the Lord's done

  903. in our life

  904. at the beginning.

  905. We forget

  906. the wonder

  907. of that grace

  908. and mercy

  909. and love

  910. that has drawn us

  911. to Him

  912. in the first place.

  913. So that our hearts

  914. grow cold.

  915. Or so that

  916. we're so busy

  917. even with the church

  918. but we forget

  919. the Savior,

  920. the Lord,

  921. the King

  922. of the church.

  923. The main thing

  924. doesn't become

  925. the main thing.

  926. He becomes secondary

  927. in all that we do.

  928. And so we need

  929. reminded.

  930. Allow me to ask you,

  931. what does Jesus mean

  932. to you tonight?

  933. And I ask myself

  934. the same question.

  935. And we know

  936. the textbook answer

  937. what we should say

  938. but really

  939. in working terms,

  940. what does Jesus

  941. mean to you tonight?

  942. In your life

  943. on this Friday evening

  944. in August,

  945. if you were to

  946. honestly answer,

  947. what does Jesus

  948. mean to you tonight?

  949. How would you

  950. articulate that?

  951. How would I

  952. articulate that?

  953. It's a challenge.

  954. It's a question

  955. that searches us

  956. because we can tell

  957. what many different

  958. things mean to us

  959. tonight.

  960. We can even tell

  961. what church means

  962. to us tonight.

  963. But what does Jesus

  964. mean to you

  965. tonight?

  966. We forget.

  967. We forget

  968. the wonder

  969. of who He is

  970. and what He's done

  971. and what He will do.

  972. we lose sight

  973. of our identity

  974. as being

  975. in Him

  976. and in none other.

  977. We get bogged down

  978. and held back.

  979. We forget.

  980. But tonight,

  981. friends,

  982. we have good news.

  983. And the good news

  984. is this,

  985. that He accommodates us.

  986. It's not to justify

  987. our neglect

  988. of our Lord

  989. and Savior

  990. or far from it,

  991. but still,

  992. the Lord

  993. accommodates us.

  994. He's so different

  995. to us.

  996. When people forget us

  997. or neglect us,

  998. what do we do?

  999. We turn our back

  1000. on them.

  1001. We let them know

  1002. in no uncertain terms

  1003. that we're not happy,

  1004. we're not pleased,

  1005. not the Lord.

  1006. He accommodates us,

  1007. He meets us

1008. at our point of need.

  1009. How?

  1010. By giving

  1011. to His bride

  1012. that memorial

  1013. to return

  1014. to time

  1015. and time

  1016. again.

  1017. What is it?

  1018. It is,

  1019. of course,

  1020. the Lord's Supper.

  1021. What do we read

  1022. in Luke 22, 19?

  1023. And He took bread

1024. and when He had given thanks,

  1025. He broke it

1026. and gave it to them,

  1027. saying,

  1028. This is my body

  1029. which is given

  1030. for you.

  1031. We read these words

  1032. so often

  1033. and, of course,

  1034. when we read words,

  1035. often familiarity

  1036. can lead us

  1037. to lose sight

  1038. of the depth

  1039. of their meaning.

  1040. This is my body

  1041. which is given

  1042. for you.

  1043. Do this

  1044. in remembrance

  1045. of me.

  1046. And likewise,

  1047. the cup

  1048. after they had eaten,

  1049. saying,

  1050. This cup

  1051. that is poured

  1052. out for you

  1053. is the new covenant

  1054. in my blood.

  1055. Do this

  1056. in remembrance

  1057. of me.

  1058. What we have here,

  1059. friends,

  1060. is a crucial marker

  1061. for God's people,

1062. a time when we can

  1063. refocus on our Savior

  1064. and His loving kindness

  1065. and delivering us

  1066. out of the bondage

  1067. and the tyranny

  1068. of that wilderness

1069. that we found ourselves in.

1070. It's so easy to forget.

  1071. It's so easy,

1072. even as the Lord's people,

  1073. to become high

  1074. and lofty

1075. and to start looking down

1076. on those who are not saved

  1077. and tutting

  1078. at their behavior

  1079. as if we ourselves

  1080. were never there.

  1081. We forget

  1082. that He took us

  1083. from the mighty clay,

  1084. from the fearful pit.

  1085. We didn't take ourselves,

  1086. He took us.

1087. And so we need to be brought

  1088. back down to earth.

1089. We need to be brought back

  1090. to that place

  1091. where we remember.

  1092. A reminder

  1093. of that miracle,

  1094. not the parting

  1095. of the Jordan,

  1096. but the miracle

  1097. of grace

  1098. that has taken place

  1099. in our lives.

  1100. That's what you hope

  1101. to do here

  1102. this Lord's Day.

  1103. And in this reminder,

  1104. there is strengthening.

  1105. Because it's important

  1106. to remember

  1107. that the Lord's Supper

  1108. isn't just a bare

  1109. memorial service.

1110. That's not what it is.

  1111. We're not coming

  1112. to just remember.

  1113. It's so much more

  1114. than that.

  1115. The eating and drinking

  1116. in the Lord's Supper,

  1117. it shows forth

  1118. what they used

  1119. to call that

  1120. that mystical union

  1121. between Christ

  1122. and His people,

  1123. which essentially

  1124. refers to that

  1125. intimate,

  1126. that spiritual union

  1127. between Christ

  1128. and you

  1129. if you are His.

  1130. What the Apostle Paul

  1131. calls communing

  1132. or fellowshipping

  1133. in the body

  1134. and in the blood

  1135. of Jesus Christ.

  1136. Isn't that wonderful?

1137. That He's given us that.

  1138. Do we deserve it?

  1139. No.

1140. Are we worthy of it?

  1141. Certainly not.

1142. But yet He gives us

  1143. that time

1144. where we can be reminded

1145. that we are in Christ.

1146. This is not a bare memorial

1147. or an act of remembrance.

  1148. And so never ever

  1149. treat the Lord's Supper

  1150. as such.

  1151. Come with that sense

  1152. of expectation

  1153. and praise

  1154. and worship.

  1155. that almost

  1156. sense of victory

  1157. within your heart.

  1158. He is not here

  1159. for He

  1160. has

  1161. risen.

  1162. And that's why

  1163. it's so important

  1164. for us to

  1165. avail ourselves

  1166. of such

  1167. a blessing.

  1168. God has given it

  1169. to us

  1170. for our good.

  1171. Now I didn't say

  1172. God has given it

  1173. to us

  1174. because we are good.

  1175. That's sometimes

  1176. what we can think.

  1177. Maybe you think

  1178. that tonight

  1179. you haven't professed

  1180. the Lord

  1181. as your Savior

  1182. and you are His.

  1183. You have a relationship

  1184. with Him

  1185. and you have done

  1186. for years.

  1187. But you say

1188. I am not good enough

  1189. and neither you are

1190. and neither you will be.

  1191. That is a complete

  1192. and I say this

  1193. with all love

  1194. and due respect

  1195. that is a complete

  1196. and utter

  1197. misunderstanding

  1198. of the whole

  1199. gospel of Jesus Christ

  1200. and not only that

  1201. but it undermines it.

  1202. Because with that

  1203. approach

  1204. you are saying

  1205. that there could be

  1206. a time that you

  1207. are good enough.

  1208. It will never come.

  1209. That's the whole point.

  1210. He is good enough.

  1211. And that's what

  1212. ought to draw us

  1213. all the more

1214. that we take our eyes

  1215. off ourselves.

  1216. Yes we examine ourselves

1217. but we take our eyes

  1218. off ourselves

  1219. and we look

  1220. to Him

  1221. and we say

  1222. Hallelujah

  1223. what a Savior.

  1224. What a Savior.

  1225. And so if you

  1226. haven't come forward

  1227. to the Lord's table

  1228. what's stopping you?

  1229. If you're His

  1230. we know that

  1231. this is the table

  1232. of the Lord

  1233. for His people.

  1234. It's a strengthening

  1235. ordinance.

  1236. What is it

  1237. that's stopping you?

  1238. You can't say

  1239. that you're not

  1240. good enough

1241. or you can say that

  1242. but you're never

  1243. going to get over

  1244. that hurdle.

  1245. But what about

  1246. Christ?

  1247. What think

  1248. ye of Christ?

  1249. You answer that

  1250. and allow your

  1251. answer to that

  1252. question

  1253. to inform

  1254. the reason

  1255. why you are

  1256. or are not

  1257. at the Lord's table.

  1258. You're denying

  1259. yourself a blessing.

  1260. But more than that

  1261. this is important.

  1262. You're denying

  1263. others

  1264. your witness.

  1265. Remember

  1266. this memorial

  1267. was to serve

  1268. as a witness

  1269. to the children

  1270. of the people.

1271. As many of you know

  1272. I grew up

  1273. in this very

  1274. congregation

  1275. and I would

  1276. sit up

  1277. in that seat

  1278. that has the

  1279. ladder in it

  1280. in the back

  1281. there

  1282. and the Lord's

  1283. Supper

  1284. would be

  1285. dispensed here

  1286. on a Lord's Day

  1287. morning

  1288. and I would

  1289. peer over

  1290. and I would

  1291. ask questions

  1292. what's happening?

  1293. Why are they

  1294. doing what

  1295. they're doing?

  1296. And I would

  1297. see people

  1298. partaking

  1299. some of whom

  1300. are here tonight

  1301. some are long

  1302. gone

  1303. and I would

  1304. look upon them

  1305. and they would

  1306. speak not as

  1307. stones

  1308. but as

  1309. living stones

  1310. those who

  1311. join

  1312. together

  1313. to build

  1314. the house

  1315. of God

  1316. that's what the

  1317. house of God

  1318. is not this

  1319. building but his

  1320. people

  1321. joining

  1322. together

  1323. I would

  1324. ask

  1325. what are they

  1326. doing?

  1327. What

  1328. does

  1329. this

  1330. mean?

  1331. if you

  1332. are not

  1333. coming to

  1334. the Lord's

  1335. table

  1336. and you

  1337. are his

  1338. and again

  1339. I say this

  1340. in love

  1341. what you're

  1342. doing is

  1343. this

  1344. you're

  1345. marrying

  1346. your witness

  1347. your friends

  1348. your loved

  1349. ones

  1350. your children

  1351. your grandchildren

  1352. your husband

  1353. your wife

  1354. your mother

  1355. your father

  1356. they're seeing

  1357. you holding

  1358. back year

  1359. after year

  1360. after year

  1361. refusing

  1362. to identify

  1363. with the

  1364. people

  1365. of God

  1366. and not

  1367. only that

  1368. and this

  1369. is a real

  1370. challenge

  1371. to us

  1372. you're

  1373. marrying

  1374. your witness

  1375. to the

  1376. community

  1377. at large

  1378. what do

  1379. I mean?

  1380. well let's

  1381. come back

  1382. to our

  1383. text

  1384. and with

  1385. this

  1386. I'm

  1387. nearly

  1388. finished

  1389. because

  1390. as well

  1391. as reminding

  1392. the Israelites

  1393. and their

  1394. children

  1395. that this

  1396. simple

  1397. monument

  1398. this simple

  1399. monument

  1400. was to

  1401. remind

  1402. all

  1403. people

  1404. the pagans

  1405. the godly

  1406. the ungodly

  1407. all that were

  1408. living in the

  1409. vicinity

  1410. all who were

  1411. worshipping

  1412. false gods

  1413. they were

  1414. they were

  1415. this

  1416. monument

  1417. would serve

  1418. as a reminder

  1419. of what the

  1420. God of Israel

  1421. had done

  1422. and was

  1423. doing

  1424. verse 24

  1425. so that all

  1426. the peoples

  1427. of the earth

  1428. may know

  1429. that the

  1430. hand of

  1431. the lord

  1432. is mighty

  1433. that you

  1434. may fear

  1435. the lord

  1436. your god

  1437. forever

  1438. these stones

  1439. spoke to

  1440. the people

  1441. at large

  1442. and you know

  1443. that's what

  1444. our profession

  1445. of faith

  1446. does

  1447. it speaks

  1448. to people

  1449. we're nailing

  1450. our colours

  1451. to the mast

  1452. that is the

  1453. nature of

  1454. faith

  1455. we will not

  1456. walk on

  1457. water

  1458. till we

  1459. step out

  1460. of the

  1461. boat

  1462. and when

  1463. we nail

  1464. our colours

  1465. to the mast

  1466. people see

  1467. that we

  1468. identify

  1469. not in

  1470. this world

  1471. but in

  1472. Christ

  1473. so that

  1474. when you

  1475. go back

  1476. to your

  1477. workplace

  1478. on Monday

  1479. you can

  1480. say I

  1481. have

  1482. professed

  1483. I have

  1484. come out

  1485. on his

  1486. side

  1487. when you

  1488. go back

  1489. to your

  1490. street

  1491. you can

  1492. say to

  1493. your neighbours

  1494. I have

  1495. now

  1496. identified

  1497. as a

  1498. child

  1499. of God

  1500. by being

  1501. obedient

  1502. to his

  1503. command

  1504. you're

  1505. witnessing

  1506. to those

  1507. around you

  1508. not of

  1509. yourself

  1510. but of

  1511. your

  1512. saviour

  1513. and you

  1514. can say

  1515. then with

  1516. all confidence

  1517. come see a

  1518. man who

  1519. told me all

  1520. things that

  1521. ever I

  1522. did

  1523. is this

  1524. not the

  1525. Christ

  1526. is this

  1527. not the

  1528. Christ

  1529. I'm not

  1530. ashamed to

  1531. call him

  1532. my saviour

  1533. you come

  1534. and know

  1535. him

  1536. for

  1537. yourself

  1538. what a

  1539. witness

  1540. that is

  1541. don't we

  1542. need that

  1543. witness

  1544. in the

  1545. day that

  1546. we live

  1547. in

  1548. that's

  1549. what faith

  1550. is

  1551. stepping

  1552. out

  1553. in the

  1554. strength

  1555. of the

  1556. Lord

  1557. and so

  1558. friends

  1559. if you

  1560. are his

  1561. come

  1562. you come

  1563. and you

  1564. show forth

  1565. in humble

  1566. remembrance

  1567. of what

  1568. God

  1569. has done

  1570. in

  1571. your

  1572. life

  1573. you be

  1574. part of

  1575. this

  1576. marker

  1577. of this

  1578. cairn

  1579. we've

  1580. often heard

  1581. it said

  1582. that the

  1583. church is

  1584. like a

  1585. wall made

  1586. up of

  1587. stones

  1588. different

  1589. sized

  1590. stones

  1591. there are

  1592. large

  1593. stones

  1594. there are

  1595. small

  1596. stones

  1597. but every

  1598. single

  1599. stone is

  1600. needed

  1601. you might

  1602. look at

  1603. other people

  1604. here and

  1605. you might

  1606. say I

  1607. will never

  1608. be as

  1609. godly as

  1610. that person

  1611. of course

  1612. that's the

  1613. voice of

  1614. the devil

  1615. but no

  1616. matter how

  1617. you see

  1618. yourself

  1619. the reality

  1620. is that if

  1621. you're

  1622. Christ's

  1623. he sees

  1624. you as

  1625. a precious

  1626. stone

  1627. a needful

  1628. stone

  1629. and so

  1630. come

  1631. be part

  1632. of

  1633. this

  1634. glorious

  1635. body

  1636. of Christ

  1637. by identifying

  1638. as him

  1639. as his

  1640. rather

  1641. that you

  1642. would

  1643. unashamedly

  1644. allow that

  1645. flag to

  1646. fly above

  1647. that cairn

  1648. he

  1649. has died

  1650. for me

  1651. let us

  1652. pray

  1653. what wonderful

  1654. words oh

  1655. lord that

  1656. any of us

  1657. can say

  1658. he

  1659. has died

  1660. for me

  1661. and as

  1662. we reflect

  1663. upon

  1664. what you

  1665. have done

  1666. we come

  1667. and we

  1668. seek

  1669. forgiveness

  1670. for our

  1671. apathy

  1672. and our

  1673. coldness

  1674. but yet

  1675. we don't

  1676. stop there

  1677. because our

  1678. identity is

  1679. not found

  1680. even in

  1681. our own

  1682. obedience

  1683. but in

  1684. Christ

  1685. but help

  1686. oh lord

  1687. our identity

  1688. in Christ

  1689. to inform

  1690. our obedience

  1691. so that we

  1692. might come

  1693. come and

  1694. know for

  1695. ourselves

  1696. the blessing

  1697. that follows

  1698. therein

  1699. for us to

  1700. come

  1701. and identify

  1702. that indeed

  1703. we have been

  1704. brought into

  1705. your banqueting

  1706. house

  1707. the banner

  1708. over us

  1709. is love

  1710. and so we

  1711. pray for any

  1712. of our dear

  1713. friends here

  1714. who are

  1715. perhaps

  1716. struggling

  1717. and have

  1718. been for

  1719. years

  1720. who have

  1721. got so

  1722. many fears

  1723. and anxieties

  1724. of what it

  1725. means to

  1726. profess your

  1727. name

  1728. draw them

  1729. we pray

  1730. by your

  1731. spirit

  1732. give them

  1733. that boldness

  1734. to come

  1735. forward

  1736. a step

  1737. that they

  1738. will never

  1739. ever regret

  1740. and so go

  1741. before us

  1742. now we pray

  1743. be with

  1744. our friends

  1745. here in the

  1746. remainder of

  1747. their communion

  1748. weekend

  1749. as they

  1750. remember

  1751. your death

  1752. until

  1753. you come

  1754. again

  1755. that they

  1756. would do

  1757. so so

  1758. mindful of

  1759. the fact

  1760. that you

  1761. are here

  1762. with them

  1763. part us

  1764. then with

  1765. your blessing

  1766. and forgive

  1767. us for

  1768. Jesus

  1769. sake

  1770. amen

  1771. we're going

  1772. to conclude

  1773. singing to

  1774. God's praise

  1775. from Psalm

  1776. 136

  1777. Psalm 136

  1778. again in the

  1779. Scottish

  1780. Psalter

  1781. this is a

  1782. psalm of

  1783. reminders

  1784. what we

  1785. read in

  1786. every verse

  1787. is that

  1788. his mercy

  1789. for certainly

  1790. his mercy

  1791. is due

  1792. most firm

  1793. and sure

  1794. eternally

  1795. each and

  1796. every verse
