  1. James, thank you for your warm welcome. It's good to be with you, a privilege to share in worship

  2. and praise this evening. Before singing to God's praise, let me read just these few verses from

  3. the scriptures, where in Psalm 30 we're told, sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints,

  4. and give thanks to his holy name. Let us worship him together. Singing from the Psalter in Psalm 111,

  5. Psalm 111 from the Psalter, and we'll sing from the beginning to the tune Amazing Grace to verse 4.

  6. Praise ye the Lord, with my whole heart I will God's praise declare, where the assemblies of the

  7. just and congregations are. The whole works of the Lord our God are great above all measure,

  8. sought out they are of everyone that doth therein take pleasure. Psalm 111, and we'll sing from the

  9. beginning to verse 4, to God's praise.

  10. Praise ye the Lord, with my whole heart I will God's praise declare,

  11. where the assemblies of the just and congregations are. The whole works of the Lord our God is.

  12. Our God is. The whole works of the Lord our God. Our great above all measure,

  13. our great above all measure, sought out they are of everyone that doth therein take pleasure.

  14. In this work most honor, our great above all measure,

  15. In this work most honor, our great above all measure,

  16. most glorious and pure, and this untinted righteousness,

  17. and this untinted righteousness forever doth endure.

  18. His works most wonderful we have, may to be thought upon,

  19. The Lord is gracious and he is, full of compassion,

  20. The Lord is gracious and he is, full of compassion.

  21. Let us pray together.

  22. Let us pray together.

  23. Praise ye the Lord, with my whole heart I will God's praise declare.

  24. Lord, these words resonate within our very souls.

  25. They speak of what it is to gather together, brother and sister in Christ,

  26. Before the throne of grace in worship and in praise.

  27. Lord, we would draw near to you with a spirit that would please and honor you.

  28. We would long to know your presence and seek your face.

  29. And may it please you, Lord, to come in among us and do us good this evening.

  30. As we seek your presence and study together the glorious gospel of God,

  31. May it please you to draw near to us, to bless us, to edify us and to nourish us.

  32. Lord, we ask these things for you are a God of wonderful provision.

  33. You are a God of who is compassionate and full of grace toward us.

  34. And we bless you that this is the case and it has been declared as such through Jesus Christ,

  35. your son, our savior, the one who came into this world to seek and to save the lost.

  36. And so we gather together this evening in the name of Jesus.

  37. We lift up his name, we glorify his name, we acknowledge him to be our king, our shepherd.

  38. We profess our faith and hope to be in him, the one who is altogether lovely,

  39. the one who came into this world and gave himself.

  40. And so we, Lord, join with our brothers and sisters across our island and nation and world.

  41. And we see that the life we now live, we live by faith in the son of God,

  42. God loved us and gave himself for us.

  43. What testimony, what profession, what hope.

  44. And we pray, Lord, tonight that that hope would burn brightly

  45. as we spend time this evening in worship and in fellowship over these days.

  46. And that as we go into the week ahead, fortified by word and sacrament,

  47. may it please you, Lord, to bless our witness and our service of the gospel to those around us.

  48. For we pray that the light of the glorious gospel of Jesus would shine brightly through each one of our lives.

  49. That in our hearts, in our conversations, in our conduct,

  50. and how we hold ourselves in what we do and what we don't do,

  51. and how, Lord, we conduct our business and make our decisions,

  52. and how we behave at home, at the workplace, in private and in public.

  53. Lord, we pray that you would take the glory to yourself.

  54. And we thank you, Lord, that we would ask this to be the case.

  55. And we do humbly in dependence upon you, for the scripture tells us we are a chosen generation,

  56. a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people special to God,

  57. that you may proclaim the praises of him who called you from darkness into his marvellous light.

  58. Lord, may each one of us, according to opportunity and your gifts and grace,

  59. in our own way, in our own homes, in our own circumstance, be as a city on a hill that cannot be hid.

  60. And so, Lord, we thank you tonight for this opportunity to study the scripture together

  61. in anticipation of meeting at the Lord's table tomorrow on the beginning of a new week.

  62. Lord, we gather this evening humbled at the teaching of the Bible that reveals to us that place known as Golgotha,

  63. the place where Jesus Christ gave himself to death, even death on a cross,

  64. where there he breathed his last, where there he suffered the agony of separation and judgment as the sin bearer of the world.

  65. We can scarce take in that scene.

  66. How can we begin to comprehend in our hearts when we come to the foot of the cross?

  67. But Lord, as we do so, we do so in faith and trust.

  68. We look there in awe and wonder.

  69. We look there at times, Lord, broken, conscious of our own sin, conscious of our weakness, conscious of our need.

  70. Lord, in Jesus, these things are met to their fullest.

  71. And so we say in our hearts, too, that when we survey that wondrous cross in which the Prince of Glory died,

  72. that we do so, Lord, through a sense of wonder, a sense of thankfulness, a sense, Lord, that there is the hope of the world.

  73. It was not that someone died on the cross that amazes us.

  74. It's who died.

  75. It's not that blood was shed on the cross, but whose blood?

  76. And there he became a curse for us.

  77. A lifetime of theological study and reflection and worship is not long enough to plumb the depths of that reality.

  78. The Son of God, the very Lamb of God, taking away the sin of the world by becoming a curse for us.

  79. And so, Lord, we gather this evening humbled, dependent, grateful.

  80. We meet, Lord, in anticipation also.

  81. For you tell us that where two or three gather in your name, you are there in the midst and there to bless.

  82. And so, Lord, we ask that the Holy Spirit would be amongst us here, ministering to us and amongst us in our hearts,

  83. shining his light of understanding and insight onto the person and work of Jesus, your Son.

  84. That there we would glorify him and worship him and lift up his name and praise him

  85. and give thanks for his saving work upon the cross, where there he gave himself in perfection and took upon himself our sin.

  86. And we bless you, Lord, that at the heart of the gospel there is a transaction,

  87. and that that transaction continues to happen around the world.

  88. That when sinners come to Jesus in repentance and faith, he takes our guilt and gives us his goodness.

  89. Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  90. And so help us, Lord, this evening to further understand and appreciate and glory in this good news.

  91. And that we would go from here, Lord, encouraged and nourished, built up in our faith and deepened in our understanding of the deep things of God.

  92. That we would say, day by day, I am not ashamed of the testimony of my Saviour.

  93. And I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God unto salvation to all who believe.

  94. What a wondrous declaration that is, that all who believe are saved.

  95. Bless, Lord, that message this evening amongst ourselves.

  96. As we study this evening your word in preparation to share together at the table of the Lord tomorrow,

  97. we ask that you would draw near to us, Lord, and that we would have a teachable spirit and a listening ear.

  98. That our souls, Lord, would be edified.

  99. That we would know something of the fullness of God in our time of worship together this evening.

  100. Lord, we pray that you would bless your cause here on our island, across our communities and across our nation.

  101. We long for the day when we will see the gospel taking root in hearts and lives around us.

  102. We long for the day where men and women and boys and girls will come to know Jesus Christ for themselves,

  103. professing their faith in him and acknowledging him as Saviour, living for him day by day.

  104. Remember us, Lord, in Scotland at this time.

  105. And may it please you to raise up men and women who will take their place in the public square

  106. and be unashamed of their testimony, unashamed of their Saviour,

  107. and clear in their conviction that Jesus Christ is Lord.

  108. So, Lord, this evening we pray that you would come in among us,

  109. that we would know your word to be all the more precious to us,

  110. for it is the word of life.

  111. And here we have the promise of life in Christ Jesus.

  112. And may it please you, Lord, that as together we worship,

  113. we would do so in humility and dependence, looking unto Jesus,

  114. the author and finisher of our faith.

  115. And so we pray for ourselves this evening.

  116. We pray for your cause across our land.

  117. We remember our nation.

  118. And we pray, Lord God, that you would remember us at this time,

  119. where it seems that secularism and atheism and humanism are running rampant.

  120. And it seems that at times our nation, Lord, is hurtling full speed away from the cross,

  121. away from Christ and away from any concept of our nation being a nation that has a Christian heritage.

  122. And so, Lord, there is a great task,

  123. for the darkness seems to be extending and deepening.

  124. But we know, we know that that darkness is presided over by a defeated prince,

  125. who rages and is in terror of Christ at the same time.

  126. And so he takes out his rage on the church of Christ and the people of Christ and the cause of Christ.

  127. And we pray, Lord God, tonight that we would be conscious of this roaring lion,

  128. seeking to be in amongst us, seeking to devour and scatter,

  129. seeking to inhibit and terrorise the Lord's people.

  130. May we resist him.

  131. May we resist him in the name of Christ.

  132. And may we, Lord, resist him in reliance on the grace and peace that you promise as we wait upon you.

  133. And we bless you, Lord, for that great promise,

  134. that those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.

  135. So be with us this evening.

  136. Draw near to us.

  137. Cleanse us and renew us.

  138. Forgive our sin, we pray.

  139. In Jesus' name.

  140. Amen.

  141. Well, we'll sing again to God's praise from Sing Psalms

  142. in Psalm 119, verse 9.

    Psalms 119:9

  143. Psalm 119, singing from verse 9,

  144. page 157 in our Blue Psalm books.

  145. And we'll sing this section to the tune,

  146. Herringate.

  147. Psalm 119 from Sing Psalms, page 157.

  148. The second section.

  149. How can the young keep their life pure?

  150. By doing what your word demands.

  151. I seek you with my heart and soul.

  152. Let me not stray from your commands.

  153. Your word I've hidden in my heart to keep me from offending you.

  154. Praise be to you, O Lord my God.

  155. Teach me your statutes, firm and true.

  156. And true.

  157. We'll sing this whole section to God's praise.

  158. Praise.

  159. Praise be to you, O Lord.

  160. O come the young keep their life pure.

  161. I take what your word demands.

  162. I seek you with my heart and soul.

  163. Let me not stray from your commands.

  164. I seek you with my heart and soul.

  165. Let me not stray from your commands.

  166. I seek you with my heart and soul.

  167. Let me not stray from your commands.

  168. You are my faith in my heart.

  169. I seek you with my heart and soul.

  170. Let me not stray from your commands.

  171. You are my faith in my heart.

  172. I seek you with my heart and soul.

  173. Let me not stray from your commands.

  174. You are my faith in my heart.

  175. To keep me from offending you.

  176. I seek you with my heart.

  177. I seek you with my heart.

  178. I seek you with my heart.

  179. I seek you with my heart and soul.

  180. Let me not stray from your commands.

  181. You are my faith in my heart.

  182. You are my faith in my heart.

  183. You are my faith in my heart.

  184. You are my faith in my heart.

  185. To keep me from offending you.

  186. Praise be to you, O Lord my God.

  187. Teach me your statutes firm and truth.

  188. Each law proceeding from your mouth.

  189. I O Lord my heart.

  190. I grant you with my heart and soul.

  191. I plan thee with my lips.

  192. I attend your heart.

  193. I bend you with my lips and soul.

  194. I love to follow your commands.

  195. You are my faith in my heart.

  196. I love to follow your commands.

  197. A salvage love to kind their gold.

  198. and their gold.

  199. I meditate upon your ways,

  200. and on your peace

  201. and timey flag.

  202. I take delight

  203. in your decrease.

  204. Your word I never will neglect.

  205. Wonderful words that speak of a tenacity

  206. and a determination to live wholeheartedly

  207. for the Lord.

  208. Verse 10 there says,

  209. I seek you with my heart and soul.

  210. Let me not stray from your commands.

  211. Words of commitment

  212. that come from deep-seated conviction.

  213. And we're going to be thinking about that this evening

  214. as we turn to the second letter of Paul

  215. to Timothy and chapter 1.

  216. 2 Timothy and chapter 1,

  217. where the apostle writes

  218. to his young brother in the Lord,

  219. indeed his son in the Lord.

  220. He was someone who Paul was deeply affectionate towards,

  221. who had served as a right-hand man

  222. for many a long year in the work of the gospel.

  223. And from what we can tell,

  224. this is Paul's final word and testimony.

  225. It is, in many ways,

  226. his will,

  227. his last will and testimony

  228. written to the church

  229. from a prison cell,

  230. incarcerated because of his gospel service

  231. and his love for Christ.

  232. And so he writes to encourage Timothy

  233. and prepare him for leadership in his time.

  234. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus

  235. by the will of God,

  236. according to the promise of the life

  237. that is in Christ Jesus,

  238. to Timothy, my beloved child,

  239. grace, mercy, and peace

  240. from God the Father

  241. and Christ Jesus our Lord.

  242. I thank God whom I serve,

  243. as did my ancestors,

  244. with a clear conscience,

  245. as I remember you constantly

  246. in my prayers night and day.

  247. As I remember your tears,

  248. I long to see you,

  249. that I may be filled with joy.

  250. I am reminded of your sincere faith,

  251. a faith that dwelled first

  252. in your grandmother, Lois,

  253. and your mother, Eunice,

  254. and now I am sure dwells in you as well.

  255. For this reason,

  256. I remind you to fan into flame

  257. the gift of God which is in you

  258. through the laying on of my hands.

  259. For God gave us a spirit,

  260. not of fear,

  261. but of power and of love

  262. and self-control.

  263. Therefore, do not be ashamed

  264. of the testimony about our Lord,

  265. nor of me, his prisoner,

  266. but share in suffering for the gospel

  267. by the power of God,

  268. who saved us and called us

  269. to a holy calling,

  270. not because of our works,

  271. but because of his own purpose

  272. and grace which he gave us

  273. in Christ Jesus before the ages began,

  274. and which now has been manifested

  275. through the appearing of our Savior,

  276. Christ Jesus,

  277. who abolished death

  278. and brought life and immortality

  279. to light through the gospel,

  280. for which I was appointed a preacher

  281. and apostle and teacher,

  282. which is why I suffer as I do.

  283. But I am not ashamed,

  284. for I know whom I have believed,

  285. and I am convinced

  286. that he is able to guard

  287. until that day

  288. what has been entrusted to me.

  289. Follow the pattern

  290. of the sound words

  291. that you have heard from me

  292. in the faith and love

  293. that are in Christ Jesus

  294. by the Holy Spirit

  295. who dwells within us.

  296. Guard the good deposit

  297. entrusted to you.

  298. You are aware

  299. that all who were in Asia

  300. turned away from me,

  301. among whom are Phygelus

  302. and Hermogenes.

  303. May the Lord grant mercy

  304. to the household

  305. of Onesiphorus,

  306. for he often refreshed me

  307. and was not ashamed

  308. of my chains.

  309. But when he arrived in Rome,

  310. he searched for me

  311. earnestly and found me.

  312. May the Lord grant him

  313. to find mercy

  314. from the Lord

  315. on that day.

  316. And you well know

  317. all the service he rendered

  318. at Ephesus.

  319. Amen.

  320. May God bless his word

  321. to our hearts.

  322. To his name be the praise.

  323. Well, before we spend

  324. some time together

  325. looking at that chapter,

  326. we'll sing again

  327. to the praise of God

  328. from the Psalter,

  329. Psalm 89.

  330. Psalm 89,

  331. singing from verse 13

  332. in the Psalter.

  333. Page 3, 4, 5

  334. in our Blue Psalm books.

  335. Page 3, 4, 5.

  336. Singing Psalm 89

  337. from verse 13.

  338. We'll sing to verse 16

  339. to the tune Newington.

  340. Thou hast an arm

  341. that's full of power.

  342. Thy hand is great in might.

  343. Thy right hand

  344. exceedingly exalted

  345. is in height.

  346. Justice and judgment

  347. of thy throne

  348. are made the dwelling place.

  349. Mercy,

  350. accompanied with truth,

  351. shall go before thy face.

  352. We'll sing from verse 13

  353. to 16

  354. to God's praise.

  355. Amen.

  356. Amen.

  357. Amen.

  358. Amen.

  359. Amen.

  360. Amen.

  361. Thy hand is great in might.

  362. On thy right hand

  363. exceedingly

  364. exalted is in height.

  365. justice and judgment

  366. of thy throne

  367. are made the dwelling place.

  368. Mercy,

  369. accompanied with truth,

  370. shall go before thy face.

  371. O greatly blessed

  372. O greatly blessed

  373. the people are,

  374. the joyful Son

  375. that know.

  376. In brightness

  377. of thy face,

  378. O Lord,

  379. they ever on

  380. shall grow,

  381. of glory,

  382. shall she have the editor

  383. Let's all take me on high.

  384. Let's bow in prayer for a moment together.

  385. Lord, may it please you this evening

  386. to draw near to us.

  387. We seek above all, Lord,

  388. that everything done and said here

  389. would be pleasing and acceptable before you.

  390. We acknowledge you to be holy,

  391. holy, holy, almighty God,

  392. wondrous in power, glorious in might,

  393. amazing in grace.

  394. And so, Lord, as we would hear you speak

  395. through your word this evening,

  396. we ask that you would lead

  397. and you would teach

  398. and you would mold and you would guide,

  399. that we might heed the scriptures

  400. and take these,

  401. your precious truths,

  402. into our hearts

  403. and from here

  404. into our lives

  405. and into our homes.

  406. We ask, Lord,

  407. that we would be effective witnesses

  408. and go on by your grace and peace

  409. to be the good soldiers of Christ Jesus

  410. that we are urged to become.

  411. We remain, Lord,

  412. works in progress,

  413. set apart,

  414. but ongoing in our sanctification.

  415. And may it please you, Lord,

  416. tonight

  417. to help us along that path

  418. by teaching us in you

  419. something

  420. of the conviction of heart

  421. that you call men and women

  422. to exhibit

  423. through faith

  424. in Jesus Christ,

  425. our Lord and Savior.

  426. Hear us, we pray in his name.

  427. In these things we ask

  428. as we turn together to your word.

  429. Amen.

  430. Well, in 2 Timothy

  431. and chapter 1

  432. we have

  433. deeply personal words,

  434. words that are

  435. full of teaching

  436. and the deep things

  437. of God are here.

  438. There is real

  439. depth in the theology

  440. while at the same time

  441. there is a personal feel

  442. and touch

  443. from the very beginning

  444. of this letter

  445. to the very end.

  446. We remember well

  447. the circumstance.

  448. Paul is in prison.

  449. He is now

  450. under the sentence

  451. of death.

  452. It seems the Roman

  453. judicial system

  454. is working its way

  455. towards its final conclusion

  456. which will be

  457. a summary execution

  458. having been found guilty

  459. of insurrection

  460. and atheism

  461. and all sorts of charges

  462. that were brought against

  463. the Christian church

  464. at this time.

  465. Paul knows

  466. his time is short

  467. and so he writes this letter

  468. and gets right to the heart

  469. of things

  470. as quickly as he can

  471. and as we pick up

  472. on things

  473. in chapter 4

  474. I am already being poured out

  475. as a drink offering.

  476. The time of my departure

  477. has come

  478. and that urgency

  479. is here from beginning

  480. to end

  481. in 2 Timothy

  482. and chapter 1

  483. and through that urgency

  484. we see conviction.

  485. Conviction of heart

  486. and commitment

  487. to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  488. And that's where

  489. we're going to go

  490. this evening

  491. and particularly

  492. taking note of the words

  493. in verse 12

  494. where Paul utters words

  495. that have become

  496. so famous

  497. down through the generations

  498. in the Christian church.

  499. I am not ashamed

  500. for I know

  501. whom I have believed

  502. and I am convinced

  503. that he is able to guard

  504. until that day

  505. what has been entrusted

  506. to me.

  507. I know

  508. whom

  509. I have believed.

  510. I want to read

  511. to you first of all

  512. an interview

  513. that caught my eye

  514. some time ago

  515. a Hollywood A-lister

  516. who was being interviewed

  517. and was asked

  518. this question

  519. do you believe in God?

  520. Here is the A-lister's answer.

  521. I believe

  522. there are forces

  523. at work in the universe

  524. that science can't explain

  525. and I think

  526. there's an end

  527. to human knowledge.

  528. let's call it

  529. the unknown

  530. the higher power.

  531. Let's just agree

  532. there is something

  533. beyond

  534. what we know.

  535. There are things

  536. like karma.

  537. There are things

  538. beyond

  539. what we understand.

  540. So yes

  541. I believe

  542. there's an energy

  543. and I try

  544. to use it

  545. and be in the good

  546. graces

  547. of that energy

  548. so things

  549. in my life

  550. go the way

  551. I want them to.

  552. I want you

  553. to compare

  554. that

  555. to the words

  556. of verse 12

  557. I know

  558. whom I

  559. have believed.

  560. Paul the apostle

  561. is writing

  562. from a prison cell

  563. and he writes

  564. with a whole

  565. hearted

  566. focus

  567. on the gospel

  568. and on his

  569. saviour

  570. Jesus Christ.

  571. Verse 8

  572. in chapter 1

  573. therefore do not

  574. be ashamed

  575. of the testimony

  576. about our Lord

  577. not of me as prisoner

  578. but share in suffering

  579. for the gospel

  580. by the power of God

  581. who saved us

  582. and called us

  583. to a holy calling

  584. not because of our works

  585. but because of his own

  586. purpose

  587. and grace

  588. which he gave us

  589. in Christ Jesus

  590. before the ages began.

  591. You see

  592. the Roman judicial system

  593. his sufferings

  594. the persecution

  595. and agonies

  596. he'd gone through

  597. personally in his life

  598. the heartache

  599. the bitter

  600. letdowns

  601. the disappointments

  602. the abandonment

  603. it's all

  604. caught up in this letter

  605. none of these things

  606. took from Paul

  607. what he held

  608. to be most precious

  609. a close relationship

  610. and communion

  611. with the Lord

  612. Jesus Christ.

  613. Do not be ashamed

  614. of the testimony

  615. about our Lord.

  616. So I want us

  617. to think about this

  618. this evening

  619. bearing in mind

  620. the setting

  621. and examine

  622. this conviction

  623. which leads to commitment

  624. and what it means

  625. for you and I

  626. this evening

  627. as we prepare

  628. our hearts

  629. to meet together

  630. at the Lord's table

  631. God willing

  632. tomorrow.

  633. This focus

  634. this conviction

  635. remains steadfastly

  636. cross-centered.

  637. Look at the very

  638. first sentence

  639. where he begins

  640. before we get

  641. to the wonderful words

  642. of verse 12

  643. Paul an apostle

  644. of Christ Jesus

  645. by the will of God

  646. according to the promise

  647. of life

  648. that is in Christ Jesus.

  649. He's under the sentence

  650. of death.

  651. It seems time is short

  652. he knows that

  653. soon he will be taken

  654. from his cell

  655. out with the city limits

  656. as was his right

  657. afforded to a Roman citizen

  658. and rather than being

  659. crucified

  660. he would be beheaded

  661. and that was coming

  662. to him

  663. and yet

  664. here we find him

  665. in the very first sentence

  666. of his final letter

  667. exulting in the promise

  668. of life

  669. while being under

  670. the sentence

  671. of death.

  672. This is conviction

  673. this is commitment

  674. this is the reality

  675. of certainty

  676. in the gospel

  677. of Jesus

  678. this is grace

  679. which leads

  680. to these wonderful words

  681. I know

  682. whom I

  683. have

  684. believed

  685. and I am

  686. persuaded

  687. that he is able

  688. to guard

  689. until that day

  690. what has been entrusted

  691. to me.

  692. It's a wonderful

  693. example

  694. and encouragement

  695. to us

  696. to wait

  697. on the Lord

  698. and

  699. to maintain

  700. our closeness

  701. and communion

  702. with him

  703. despite

  704. circumstances

  705. and despite

  706. what we go through

  707. we must stay

  708. close to Jesus.

  709. There's a story

  710. told of Martin Luther

  711. who at only

  712. 38 years of age

  713. was summoned

  714. to one of these

  715. great synods

  716. where he was being

  717. called to give

  718. an account

  719. for the teachings

  720. that had become

  721. public knowledge

  722. in his name

  723. and it seemed

  724. that he was taking

  725. a great risk

  726. in going there

  727. he could face arrest

  728. and being burnt

  729. at the stake

  730. as a heretic

  731. and that was known

  732. and they discussed

  733. should he go

  734. should he not

  735. and eventually

  736. he was given

  737. a guarantee

  738. of safe passage

  739. but he wrote

  740. this letter

  741. to a fellow leader

  742. and wrote these words

  743. before going

  744. to that synod

  745. my dear brother

  746. if I do not

  747. come back

  748. you will go on

  749. teaching

  750. and standing

  751. fast

  752. in the truth

  753. I know

  754. and am certain

  755. that our Lord

  756. Jesus Christ

  757. lives

  758. and rules

  759. upon this knowledge

  760. and assurance

  761. I rely

  762. he who is with me

  763. is greater

  764. than he

  765. who is in the world

  766. it's the exact

  767. sentiment

  768. we find here

  769. in 2nd Timothy

  770. and chapter 1

  771. a wonderful

  772. conviction

  773. of heart

  774. a tenacity

  775. a strength

  776. of faith

  777. a clarity

  778. and purpose

  779. a desire

  780. not to

  781. let the Lord

  782. down

  783. and not to

  784. abandon the cause

  785. and not to turn

  786. tail

  787. and not to

  788. clower before

  789. the world

  790. because he knew

  791. whom

  792. he had believed

  793. so we find

  794. first of all

  795. then

  796. a burning

  797. conviction

  798. a burning

  799. conviction

  800. I know

  801. whom I have

  802. believed

  803. in this

  804. sentiment

  805. in these words

  806. in this letter

  807. in his life

  808. in his teaching

  809. and in all his writings

  810. Paul's commitment

  811. to Jesus

  812. was absolute

  813. in him we see

  814. a clear example

  815. of what

  816. John Stott

  817. would write

  818. when he was asked

  819. what is a Christian

  820. John Stott

  821. would summarize it

  822. in this way

  823. a Christian

  824. is someone

  825. who must

  826. commit themselves

  827. heart and mind

  828. soul and will

  829. home and life

  830. personally

  831. and unreservedly

  832. to Jesus Christ

  833. that's a Christian

  834. that's clarity

  835. that's an expression

  836. and summary

  837. of the gospel

  838. of what the Bible

  839. teaches

  840. of what God

  841. wants us to know

  842. tonight here

  843. and what God

  844. wants us to share

  845. out there

  846. every opportunity

  847. we get

  848. to tell people

  849. when they ask us

  850. well what's it

  851. all about

  852. let's tell them

  853. it's about

  854. committing ourselves

  855. heart and mind

  856. soul and will

  857. home and life

  858. personally

  859. and unreservedly

  860. to Jesus Christ

  861. that's what Paul did

  862. he believed

  863. in the saviour

  864. who lived

  865. a perfect

  866. sinless life

  867. and gave himself

  868. for lost sinners

  869. 15 years or so

  870. before he wrote

  871. this letter

  872. he wrote the letter

  873. to the Galatian Christians

  874. and in there

  875. he said

  876. I have been

  877. crucified with Christ

  878. it is no longer

  879. I who live

  880. but Christ

  881. who lives in me

  882. and the life

  883. I now live

  884. in the flesh

  885. I live by faith

  886. in the son of God

  887. who loved me

  888. and gave himself

  889. for me

  890. and perhaps

  891. that's where

  892. people around us

  893. just don't get it

  894. so many people

  895. in our community

  896. on our island

  897. in our country

  898. tonight

  899. think

  900. that the Bible

  901. is a book

  902. about religion

  903. they think

  904. the free church

  905. is a denomination

  906. it's just all

  907. about religion

  908. that our message

  909. is about religion

  910. how wrong are they

  911. they couldn't be

  912. more wrong

  913. this is not a book

  914. about religion

  915. it's a book

  916. about salvation

  917. that's why we find

  918. the apostle

  919. so fool hearted

  920. and whole hearted

  921. despite being

  922. in a prison cell

  923. despite being

  924. under the sentence

  925. of death

  926. he would say

  927. I know

  928. whom I

  929. have believed

  930. and twice

  931. already

  932. before he even

  933. gets there

  934. I am not ashamed

  935. and that

  936. Christian friend

  937. as you know

  938. is a constant

  939. source of attack

  940. by the devil

  941. against us

  942. that we would

  943. feel ashamed

  944. that we would

  945. feel awkward

  946. that we would

  947. feel embarrassed

  948. and that we would

  949. be conscious

  950. of our sin

  951. and our weakness

  952. and our failings

  953. and our faults

  954. and he uses it

  955. he uses it

  956. against the Lord's

  957. people

  958. he uses it

  959. against Christian

  960. men

  961. women

  962. boys and girls

  963. to keep us

  964. from the table

  965. to make us

  966. think and feel

  967. I can't go there

  968. I'm a sinner

  969. and he trips us up

  970. with false theology

  971. and empty lies

  972. and deceit

  973. because you and I

  974. know tonight

  975. that we go to the table

  976. because we're sinners

  977. we don't go to the table

  978. to be saved

  979. we go there

  980. because we have

  981. been saved

  982. we go there

  983. to say

  984. in our hearts

  985. I know

  986. whom I have

  987. believed

  988. that's why it's

  989. wonderful to remember

  990. that the table

  991. is a place of

  992. profession

  993. and proclamation

  994. we proclaim

  995. our Lord's death

  996. till he come again

  997. Christian friend

  998. in Christ

  999. we go together

  1000. to his table

  1001. Paul then has

  1002. this burning

  1003. conviction

  1004. despite the prison

  1005. the imprisonment

  1006. despite the setbacks

  1007. despite the abandonments

  1008. despite his pressure

  1009. read 2nd Corinthians

  1010. I think it's chapter 11

  1011. or is it 13

  1012. where he lists

  1013. the persecution

  1014. the hardship

  1015. the nakedness

  1016. the hunger

  1017. the thirst

  1018. the beatings

  1019. the imprisonment

  1020. being stoned

  1021. half to death

  1022. and he went through

  1023. all that

  1024. because of his love

  1025. for Jesus

1026. and he didn't count it

  1027. something that

  1028. he shouldn't go through

  1029. because Christ

  1030. lived

  1031. and died

  1032. for him

  1033. I live by faith

1034. in the son of God

  1035. who loved me

  1036. and gave himself

  1037. for me

  1038. and what about

  1039. this death

  1040. what about this

  1041. Lord and our saviour

  1042. what was it that

  1043. was at the heart

  1044. of this burning

  1045. conviction

  1046. that the apostle

  1047. shows here

  1048. you see of all

  1049. humanity

  1050. Christ

  1051. the son of God

  1052. was without sin

1053. that he took our place

  1054. and paid our price

  1055. that's the gospel declaration

  1056. that he was declared

  1057. the sin bearer

  1058. of the world

  1059. behold

  1060. the lamb of God

  1061. who takes away

1062. the sin of the world

1063. and how did he do that

  1064. by dying

  1065. on that cross

  1066. at that time

  1067. the bible tells us

  1068. the wages of sin

  1069. is death

1070. and so we dig in

  1071. a little bit further

  1072. we say

1073. but he was without sin

  1074. so in the death

  1075. of Christ

  1076. we have an anomaly

  1077. he did not deserve

  1078. to die

  1079. and so the question

  1080. we raised is

  1081. why

  1082. why did Christ die

1083. why is there a table

  1084. to anticipate tomorrow

  1085. why do we look

  1086. at the bread

  1087. and the wine

  1088. and remember

  1089. his broken body

  1090. and shed blood

  1091. why did Jesus die

  1092. he died

  1093. because that's

1094. what he came to do

1095. to seek and to save

  1096. the lost

  1097. Christ Jesus

  1098. came into the world

  1099. to save sinners

  1100. you may know

  1101. that

  1102. as Spurgeon

  1103. lay on his deathbed

  1104. he was asked

  1105. about his

  1106. theology

  1107. and he answered this

  1108. my theology

  1109. is very simple

  1110. I can express it

  1111. in a few words

  1112. they are enough

  1113. to die by

  1114. Jesus

  1115. died

  1116. for me

  1117. Christian friend

  1118. if you're struggling

  1119. with the concept

1120. of coming to the table

  1121. here tomorrow

  1122. take these words

  1123. and repeat them

  1124. in your heart

  1125. again

  1126. and again

  1127. Jesus

  1128. died

  1129. for me

  1130. and so we come

  1131. to the table

  1132. in faith

  1133. looking to Jesus

  1134. the author

  1135. and finisher

  1136. of our faith

1137. we come to the table

  1138. with this burning

  1139. conviction

  1140. that we too know

  1141. whom we have

  1142. believed

  1143. Christians

  1144. we don't believe

  1145. in a concept

  1146. or an idea

  1147. we're not defined

  1148. by a strand

  1149. of theology

  1150. or a specific

  1151. historical denomination

  1152. we are defined

  1153. with a burning

  1154. conviction

  1155. in the substitutionary

  1156. death

  1157. of the son

  1158. of God

  1159. that's what

  1160. defined Paul

  1161. and it's what

  1162. has gone on

  1163. to define

  1164. every Christian

  1165. man and woman

  1166. since

  1167. there's a burning

  1168. conviction

  1169. in these words

  1170. I know

  1171. whom

  1172. I have

  1173. believed

  1174. it's the opposite

  1175. of that

  1176. A-lister quote

  1177. I mentioned

  1178. to you earlier

  1179. there was all

  1180. what ifs

  1181. buts

  1182. maybes

  1183. and a great

  1184. big giant

  1185. question mark

  1186. there might be

  1187. something out there

  1188. there's an energy

  1189. or something

  1190. I'm sure

  1191. there might

  1192. well be

  1193. if maybe

  1194. it's the opposite

  1195. of the Christian

  1196. gospel

  1197. behold

  1198. the Lamb

  1199. of God

  1200. who takes

  1201. away

  1202. the sin

  1203. of the world

  1204. a burning

  1205. conviction

  1206. secondly

  1207. there's this

  1208. there's from

  1209. this

  1210. a crucial

  1211. confidence

  1212. because look

  1213. what he goes

  1214. on to say

  1215. he's not

  1216. ashamed

  1217. for I know

  1218. whom I have

  1219. believed

  1220. and I

  1221. am

  1222. convinced

  1223. I am

  1224. convinced

  1225. here then

  1226. is a crucial

  1227. confidence

  1228. who's

  1229. railed

  1230. against him

  1231. the state

  1232. all the power

  1233. and might

  1234. of the Roman

  1235. Empire

  1236. the Roman

  1237. judicial system

  1238. the Jewish

  1239. legal system

  1240. all the legalists

  1241. all the Pharisees

  1242. and the scribes

  1243. they've had their

  1244. day with Paul

  1245. they've had their

  1246. pound of flesh

  1247. they've got him

  1248. right where they

  1249. want him

  1250. he's crushed

  1251. and broken

  1252. and incarcerated

  1253. under the

  1254. sentence of death

  1255. as far as

  1256. they're concerned

  1257. they've won

  1258. the day

  1259. the battle

  1260. and the war

  1261. is over

  1262. Paul saw

  1263. things very

  1264. differently

  1265. he saw

  1266. around him

  1267. a culture

  1268. a city

  1269. an empire

  1270. a people

  1271. drowning

  1272. in atheism

  1273. lost

  1274. and floundering

  1275. about

  1276. in polytheism

  1277. worshipping

  1278. the emperor

  1279. lining up

  1280. in their droves

  1281. to sprinkle

  1282. incense

  1283. on the altar

  1284. and say

  1285. Caesar is Lord

  1286. Caesar is Lord

  1287. Caesar is Lord

  1288. it's still

  1289. going on today

  1290. men and women

  1291. around us

  1292. worship the world

  1293. they're

  1294. enthralled

  1295. to the world

  1296. they're dancing

  1297. to the tune

  1298. of the world

  1299. engrossed

  1300. with the culture

  1301. of the world

  1302. and we are called

  1303. to say there's a

  1304. different path

  1305. to take

  1306. there's a different

  1307. model to build

  1308. your life upon

  1309. and the model

  1310. is not what the

  1311. world holds up

  1312. as glorious

  1313. and pure

  1314. and true

  1315. it's what

  1316. the gospel

  1317. holds out

  1318. to be the truth

  1319. and that is

  1320. Christ

  1321. I am

  1322. the way

  1323. the truth

  1324. and the life

  1325. remember

  1326. see how

  1327. personal

  1328. these words

  1329. are

  1330. I know

  1331. whom

  1332. I have

  1333. believed

  1334. it reflects

  1335. his burning

  1336. conviction

  1337. and his

  1338. close communion

  1339. with a living

  1340. saviour

  1341. in whom he had

  1342. come to know

  1343. and one he

  1344. had come to

  1345. trust

  1346. unreservedly

  1347. the Lord

  1348. who he loved

  1349. that's who

  1350. he has trusted

  1351. in

  1352. the one who

  1353. the scripture

  1354. describes as

  1355. the Lord

  1356. of creation

  1357. the Lord

  1358. of all

  1359. the Lord

  1360. of glory

  1361. the Lord

  1362. of lords

  1363. that's our

  1364. Jesus

  1365. Christian friends

  1366. this evening

  1367. and in that

  1368. Paul's

  1369. crucial confidence

  1370. is unshakable

  1371. I am

  1372. convinced

  1373. he's convinced

  1374. Psalm 2

  1375. tells us

  1376. that

  1377. the kings

  1378. of the earth

  1379. set themselves

  1380. and the rulers

  1381. take counsel

  1382. together against

  1383. the Lord

  1384. and against

  1385. his anointed

  1386. saying

  1387. that has

  1388. burst their

  1389. bonds

  1390. apart

  1391. and cast

  1392. away

  1393. their cords

  1394. from us

  1395. the world

  1396. exalts

  1397. and glories

  1398. over the church

  1399. all too often

  1400. the church

  1401. assumes

  1402. you see

  1403. that the world

  1404. assumes that

  1405. the world

  1406. is one

  1407. the world

  1408. tonight

  1409. around us

  1410. thinks that

  1411. the church

  1412. is marginalized

  1413. and an

  1414. insignificant

  1415. blip

  1416. in the history

  1417. and story

  1418. of Scotland

  1419. maybe all too

  1420. often

  1421. they're right

  1422. but it's up

  1423. to us

  1424. to challenge

  1425. that thinking

  1426. and mindset

  1427. to take on

  1428. that darkness

  1429. and that

  1430. worldliness

  1431. and that

  1432. lawlessness

  1433. and to expose

  1434. it as false

  1435. and we can only

  1436. do that

  1437. by coming to

  1438. the gospel

  1439. and speaking

  1440. of the Lord

  1441. Jesus

  1442. chapter 2

  1443. and verse 8

  1444. puts it this way

  1445. remember Jesus

  1446. Christ

  1447. risen from the

  1448. dead

  1449. the offspring

  1450. of David

  1451. is preached

  1452. in my gospel

  1453. for which I

  1454. am suffering

  1455. bound with change

  1456. is a criminal

  1457. but the word

  1458. of God

  1459. is not bound

  1460. there's something

  1461. else the world

  1462. just doesn't get

  1463. the world thinks

  1464. if it can dominate

  1465. and control

  1466. a denomination

  1467. as we see

  1468. quite often

  1469. happening at

  1470. national levels

  1471. they think

  1472. they've got us

  1473. they've got that

  1474. Christian church

  1475. right where they

  1476. want them

  1477. on the side

  1478. they let us in

  1479. at Easter

  1480. they let us in

  1481. at Christmas

  1482. they let us in

  1483. at baptism

  1484. they let us in

  1485. at weddings

  1486. and we can have

  1487. our seat at funerals

  1488. that's it

  1489. that's it

  1490. away you go

  1491. don't want to hear

  1492. you anymore

  1493. the world is happy

  1494. with the babe

  1495. in the manger

  1496. the world cannot

  1497. bear to hear

  1498. about the babe

  1499. who grew up

  1500. to be a man

  1501. and died

  1502. in a cross

  1503. that's what drives

  1504. Paul here

  1505. and what's wonderful

  1506. about this crucial

  1507. confidence

  1508. is that he knew

  1509. the gospel

  1510. and the church

  1511. was not dependent

  1512. on his efforts

  1513. or on him

  1514. as Paul the apostle

  1515. things weren't

  1516. going to fall apart

  1517. because he

  1518. had come to the

  1519. end of his course

  1520. no

  1521. Jesus Christ

  1522. who was made

  1523. the sin bearer

  1524. for his people

  1525. and had abolished

  1526. death

  1527. was building

  1528. his church

  1529. do not be ashamed

  1530. of me

  1531. or the testimony

  1532. about our Lord

1533. the end of verse 8

  1534. he uses that

  1535. wonderful phrase

  1536. share in suffering

  1537. for the gospel

  1538. by the power

  1539. of God

  1540. isn't that amazing

  1541. share in suffering

  1542. for the gospel

  1543. by the power

  1544. of God

  1545. so we have

  1546. this crucial

  1547. confidence

  1548. that the Lord

  1549. Jesus Christ

  1550. is building

  1551. his church

  1552. and that brings us

  1553. to a third thing

  1554. we have a

  1555. burning conviction

  1556. and we have

  1557. a crucial confidence

  1558. and that confidence

  1559. flourishes

  1560. and displays

  1561. a humble

  1562. awareness

  1563. see he goes on

  1564. to say here

  1565. I am convinced

  1566. that

  1567. he

  1568. is

  1569. able

  1570. he

  1571. is

  1572. able

  1573. it's not all about

  1574. Paul

  1575. it's not all about

  1576. the apostle

  1577. it's not about

  1578. his missionary

  1579. journeys

  1580. and his wonderful

  1581. oration

  1582. and his preaching

  1583. and his writing

  1584. and his teaching

  1585. all of these things

  1586. which were amazing

  1587. but he knew that

  1588. in these things

  1589. he was just

  1590. what he goes on

  1591. to describe

  1592. in chapter 2

  1593. he was just being

  1594. the good soldier

  1595. he was just being

  1596. an honest athlete

  1597. he was just being

  1598. the hard working

  1599. farmer

  1600. pictures he uses

  1601. to illustrate

  1602. Christian life

  1603. and Christian service

  1604. Christian ministry

  1605. things we are all

  1606. called to

  1607. through our Lord

  1608. and through our Saviour

  1609. so there's a humble

  1610. awareness

  1611. he says here

  1612. he is able

  1613. this word here

  1614. able

  1615. in the Greek

  1616. is dunatos

  1617. it's from the word

  1618. group for power

  1619. and Paul knew

  1620. that he was able

1621. because of who he is

  1622. and who is he

  1623. the son of God

  1624. the Lord of glory

  1625. the Lord of creation

  1626. the Lord of all

  1627. the Lord of lords

  1628. he is able

  1629. and so friends

  1630. prior to a communion

  1631. service

  1632. what do we do

  1633. we look up

  1634. we look to him

  1635. we put our faith

  1636. and our trust

  1637. in him

  1638. we too seek

  1639. to nourish

  1640. and nurture

  1641. and develop

  1642. this humble

  1643. awareness

  1644. here am I

  1645. Lord

  1646. send me

  1647. but what is it

  1648. the devil wants us

  1649. to do

1650. and what is the world

1651. trying to make us do

  1652. not look up

  1653. but look down

  1654. and be conscious

  1655. of our weakness

  1656. and our sins

  1657. and our failings

  1658. and our faults

  1659. I remember often

  1660. to share a story

  1661. with you

1662. a number of years ago

  1663. in my chaplaincy days

  1664. of going into

  1665. a headquarter building

  1666. which was very unusual

  1667. for me

1668. I tended to stay away

  1669. from places like that

1670. it was full of brass

  1671. and red tabs

  1672. and that meant

  1673. colonels and above

  1674. which was brigadiers

  1675. generals and the like

1676. they just made me nervous

  1677. but they were people

  1678. to be spoken to

1679. and they were very often

  1680. supportive and welcoming

  1681. to chaplaincy

1682. and I was told by this general

  1683. one day

  1684. come and see me

1685. and as I made my way

  1686. to the front door

  1687. of the headquarters

  1688. about to go in

  1689. I glanced down

  1690. and noticed my boots

  1691. were dirty

  1692. and I stopped

  1693. at my tracks

  1694. I thought I can't

  1695. I can't go into

  1696. the headquarters

  1697. to see the general

  1698. I've got muddy boots

1699. and I had to find

  1700. a spot somewhere

  1701. off to the side

  1702. and get a rag

  1703. and just try

1704. and get rid of the mud

  1705. because the last thing

  1706. I wanted to do

1707. was go into the headquarters

  1708. with muddy boots on

1709. because where there are generals

  1710. there are regimental

  1711. that aren't majors

  1712. and these are guys

1713. who live to spot people

  1714. turning up

  1715. in dress order

  1716. that's less than perfect

  1717. and I didn't want to

  1718. hand them the opportunity

1719. so I had to get out of there

  1720. and clean my boots

1721. but I've thought about it

  1722. time and again since

  1723. and I've thought

  1724. sometimes when it comes

  1725. to the communion table

  1726. particularly in our

  1727. denominational mindset

1728. and the way we do things

  1729. the devil succeeds

  1730. in getting Christians

  1731. to look down

  1732. and be conscious

1733. of their own muddy boots

  1734. and to think

  1735. I can't go there

  1736. I can't go to that table

  1737. I've got muddy boots

  1738. but friends

  1739. we all

  1740. had

  1741. muddy boots

  1742. what is it

  1743. that the gospel

  1744. tells us

  1745. Christ does

  1746. look Isaiah chapter 1

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  1747. he makes us

  1748. whiter than the snow

  1749. he takes away

  1750. the stains

  1751. of sin

  1752. he makes us

  1753. as white

  1754. as wool

  1755. as fresh

  1756. fallen snow

  1757. do we achieve that?

  1758. no

  1759. Christ does

  1760. so don't look down

  1761. at your muddy boots

  1762. look up

1763. look up to your saviour

1764. because that's what we find

  1765. Paul doing here

  1766. that's where his burning

  1767. conviction leads us

  1768. this evening

  1769. and that's where

  1770. we see now thirdly

  1771. this humble awareness

  1772. he is able

  1773. Paul knew

  1774. that the progress

  1775. of the gospel

  1776. the security

  1777. of the church

  1778. lay not on him

  1779. or on Peter

  1780. or on James

  1781. or on John

  1782. but in Christ

  1783. I will build

  1784. my church

  1785. and the gates

  1786. of hell

  1787. will not prevail

  1788. against it

  1789. and how does

  1790. Christ do that

  1791. by his spirit

  1792. through his people

  1793. it is ordained

  1794. from eternity

  1795. that God

  1796. fulfills

  1797. his purposes

  1798. through our prayers

  1799. and by our witnessing

  1800. isn't that amazing

  1801. that tonight

  1802. we can think

  1803. of a conversation

  1804. we may have had

  1805. recently

1806. or are about to have

1807. that we know nothing about

  1808. and through that conversation

1809. God may lead a sinner

  1810. to salvation

  1811. from darkness

  1812. to light

  1813. from alienation

  1814. and being far off

  1815. right up

  1816. to Jesus

  1817. to be turned

  1818. from being an enemy

  1819. of God

  1820. to being a child

  1821. of God

  1822. that's grace

  1823. that's amazing grace

  1824. that's why

  1825. Paul speaks

  1826. here in verse 9

  1827. he saved us

  1828. and called us

  1829. to a holy calling

1830. not because of our works

  1831. that's muddy boots

  1832. you see

  1833. but because of his

  1834. own purpose

  1835. and grace

  1836. which takes away

  1837. the mud

  1838. and says come

1839. all things are now ready

1840. and so we go to his table

  1841. in a humble awareness

  1842. of our forgiveness

  1843. of our salvation

  1844. of our dependence

  1845. when totally

  1846. and utterly

  1847. reliant on Christ

  1848. Jesus

  1849. expressed

  1850. this

  1851. ultimate reality

  1852. here in chapter 10

  1853. of John's gospel

  1854. in verses 17

  1855. and 18

  1856. where he spoke

1857. of what he was about to do

  1858. for this reason

  1859. the father loves me

  1860. because I lay down

  1861. my life

1862. that I may take it up again

1863. no one takes it from me

1864. but I lay it down

  1865. of my own accord

  1866. I have authority

  1867. to lay it down

  1868. and I have authority

1869. to take it up again

  1870. this charge

  1871. I have received

  1872. from my father

  1873. there's power

  1874. divine power

  1875. and in his power

  1876. he holds the church

  1877. in his hand

  1878. he says to us

  1879. follow me

  1880. he says to us

  1881. come

  1882. for all things

  1883. are now ready

  1884. do this

  1885. in remembrance

  1886. of me

  1887. death itself

  1888. has been

  1889. abolished

  1890. God willing

  1891. we'll think about that

  1892. tomorrow morning

  1893. and so let's just

  1894. deflect on this

  1895. tonight

  1896. that his burning

  1897. conviction

  1898. and his crucial

  1899. confidence

  1900. that combined

  1901. and flourished

  1902. into this humble

  1903. awareness

  1904. it was not diminished

  1905. because of what

  1906. he went through

  1907. the providence

  1908. of imprisonment

  1909. again

  1910. and hardship

  1911. and suffering

  1912. and difficult

  1913. circumstances

  1914. it did not diminish

  1915. his trust in Jesus

  1916. it seemed to

  1917. in some way

  1918. feed and nourish

  1919. his trust

  1920. in Jesus

  1921. the gospel

  1922. had been entrusted

  1923. to him

  1924. but under the care

  1925. of the Lord

  1926. he says to Timothy

  1927. I am convinced

  1928. he is able

  1929. to guard

  1930. until that day

  1931. what has been

  1932. entrusted to me

  1933. it's a very

  1934. technical

  1935. Greek

  1936. phrase

  1937. used here

  1938. commentators are

  1939. split

  1940. to what he's

  1941. actually referring to

  1942. it's either his soul

  1943. or the gospel

  1944. I understand

  1945. that the ESV

  1946. has got it

  1947. absolutely right

  1948. in making the

  1949. emphasis here

  1950. upon the gospel

  1951. that had been

  1952. entrusted to him

  1953. to work

  1954. toward as an

  1955. apostle

  1956. because he goes

  1957. on there in

  1958. verse 14

  1959. to say

  1960. exactly the same

  1961. thing

  1962. by the Holy

  1963. Spirit

  1964. it dwells

  1965. within us

  1966. guard the good

  1967. deposit

  1968. entrusted to you

  1969. Timothy

  1970. and remember

  1971. these letters

  1972. are addressed

  1973. in the first

  1974. instance to Timothy

  1975. but to you

  1976. and I this evening

  1977. and what's

  1978. interesting here

  1979. is that

  1980. he says

  1981. that we are

  1982. to guard

  1983. until

  1984. he speaks

  1985. in verse 12

  1986. there of

  1987. that the Lord

  1988. is able to guard

  1989. and then down

  1990. there in 14

  1991. he's saying

  1992. Timothy

  1993. guard the good

  1994. deposit

  1995. entrusted to you

  1996. it's the same

  1997. word

  1998. it's the same

  1999. word

  2000. reflecting the

  2001. same activity

  2002. of constant

  2003. vigilance

  2004. and so we need

  2005. to be aware

  2006. and savvy

  2007. when it comes

  2008. to the gospel

  2009. and false

  2010. teachers

  2011. and false

  2012. hope

  2013. and false

  2014. religion

  2015. and we must

  2016. assert

  2017. maintain

  2018. and defend

  2019. what we know

  2020. to be true

  2021. of the gospel

  2022. that has been

  2023. revealed to us

  2024. in Christ

  2025. Jesus

  2026. our Lord

  2027. and Saviour

  2028. we need to

  2029. like Paul

  2030. and Timothy

  2031. and everyone else

  2032. has come before us

  2033. exhibit a humble

  2034. awareness

  2035. as we

  2036. stick to our

  2037. guns

  2038. Martin Luther

  2039. put it this way

  2040. as he

  2041. formulated

  2042. and clarified

  2043. what the

  2044. Protestant church

  2045. is beginning

  2046. to adhere

  2047. to

  2048. faith alone

  2049. makes you

  2050. good and

  2051. righteous

  2052. faith alone

  2053. makes you

  2054. a member

  2055. of Christ

  2056. an inheritor

  2057. of heaven

  2058. and a servant

  2059. of God

  2060. behold what manner

  2061. of love the

  2062. Father has bestowed

  2063. on us

  2064. that we are

  2065. children of God

  2066. and so we

  2067. are

  2068. by

  2069. grace

  2070. which he gave

  2071. us in Christ

  2072. Jesus

  2073. before the

  2074. ages began

  2075. that's the

  2076. focus

  2077. for when

  2078. times get

  2079. tough

  2080. when

  2081. providence

  2082. deals us

  2083. with a

  2084. difficult

  2085. blow

  2086. and we're

  2087. knocked

  2088. sideways

  2089. when the

  2090. phone rings

  2091. and a text

  2092. comes

  2093. and a

  2094. door

  2095. and our

  2096. world

  2097. turns upside

  2098. down

  2099. and we're

  2100. buffeted

  2101. by shocks

  2102. and setbacks

  2103. and bereavement

  2104. and ill health

  2105. and unemployment

  2106. and financial

  2107. stress

  2108. and pressure

  2109. and we can

  2110. be consumed

  2111. with worry

  2112. and eat

  2113. ourselves

  2114. alive

  2115. remember

  2116. these words

  2117. we have

  2118. been saved

  2119. by grace

  2120. which has

  2121. been given

  2122. us in

  2123. Christ

  2124. Jesus

  2125. before the

  2126. ages

  2127. began

  2128. verse 9

  2129. God

  2130. knows

  2131. what he's

  2132. doing

  2133. if you ever

  2134. visit St.

  2135. Andrew's

  2136. I'm sure

  2137. many of you

  2138. have

  2139. and if you

  2140. go to

  2141. the top

  2142. end of

  2143. the town

  2144. to where

  2145. St.

  2146. Salvatore's

  2147. College

  2148. used to

  2149. stand

  2150. you'll find

  2151. in the

  2152. cobbled

  2153. streets

  2154. there

  2155. the letters

  2156. P.

  2157. H

  2158. which marks

  2159. the spot

  2160. or near

  2161. enough

  2162. where

  2163. Patrick

  2164. Hamilton

  2165. at the

  2166. age

  2167. of 24

  2168. was

  2169. burnt

  2170. at the

  2171. stake

  2172. in

  2173. 1528

  2174. 19

  2175. years

  2176. later

  2177. if you

  2178. go down

  2179. you'll find

  2180. if you go

  2181. down

  2182. toward

  2183. where

  2184. the

  2185. castle

  2186. of St.

  2187. Andrew's

  2188. stands

  2189. around

  2190. half a

  2191. mile

  2192. away

  2193. you'll

  2194. find

  2195. the

  2196. letters

  2197. GW

  2198. on

  2199. the

  2200. pavement

  2201. opposite

  2202. where

  2203. the

  2204. castle

  2205. stood

  2206. which

  2207. marks

  2208. the

  2209. spot

  2210. where

  2211. George

  2212. Wishart

  2213. was

  2214. also

  2215. burned

  2216. at the

  2217. stake

  2218. for his

  2219. adherence

  2220. to the

  2221. gospel

  2222. of Jesus

  2223. Christ

  2224. Patrick

  2225. Hamilton

  2226. George

  2227. Wishart

  2228. they are

  2229. part of the

  2230. DNA

  2231. of who we

  2232. are and

  2233. what we

  2234. believe

  2235. we give

  2236. thanks to

  2237. God that

  2238. we don't

  2239. face the

  2240. circumstance

  2241. providence

  2242. and providence

  2243. that

  2244. face

  2245. them

  2246. to deny

  2247. Christ

  2248. or be

  2249. burnt

  2250. alive

  2251. and let

  2252. their

  2253. records

  2254. their

  2255. initials

  2256. PH and

  2257. GW

  2258. stand as

  2259. a

  2260. monument

  2261. to their

  2262. faithfulness

  2263. of what

  2264. God called

  2265. them to

  2266. do

  2267. and in

  2268. their

  2269. humble

  2270. awareness

  2271. they in

  2272. their way

  2273. never give

  2274. up

  2275. their belief

  2276. that he

  2277. is

  2278. able

  2279. so let's

  2280. just think

  2281. of one

  2282. last thing

  2283. one last

  2284. thing this

  2285. evening

  2286. that comes

  2287. through this

  2288. verse

  2289. Paul has

  2290. said I am

  2291. not ashamed

  2292. for I know

  2293. whom I have

  2294. believed

  2295. I am

  2296. convinced he

  2297. is able

  2298. to guard

  2299. until that

  2300. day

  2301. what has

  2302. been entrusted

  2303. to me

  2304. just think

  2305. in closing

  2306. about that

  2307. phrase

  2308. that

  2309. day

  2310. because here

  2311. fourthly

  2312. finally

  2313. there is

  2314. great

  2315. anticipation

  2316. great

  2317. anticipation

  2318. but he's

  2319. in chains

  2320. he's facing

  2321. death

  2322. what's

  2323. he got

  2324. to

  2325. anticipate

  2326. a new

  2327. beginning

  2328. the time

  2329. of his

  2330. departure

  2331. has come

  2332. I have

  2333. fought the

  2334. good fight

  2335. I have

  2336. finished

  2337. the race

  2338. there is

  2339. henceforth

  2340. laid up

  2341. for me

  2342. a crown

  2343. of

  2344. righteousness

  2345. as he

  2346. goes on

  2347. to say

  2348. three times

  2349. you find

  2350. him in

  2351. verses

  2352. 12

  2353. 18

  2354. and then

  2355. again

  2356. chapter 4

  2357. in verse

  2358. 8 he

  2359. refers to

  2360. that day

  2361. what day

  2362. the day

  2363. when time

  2364. will come

  2365. to an

  2366. end

  2367. the day

  2368. when time

  2369. will cease

  2370. and eternity

  2371. is ushered

  2372. in

  2373. that's where

  2374. his focus

  2375. is

  2376. he's looking

  2377. forward

  2378. he's anticipating

  2379. that day

  2380. Paul had

  2381. played an

  2382. exceptional role

  2383. in the work

  2384. of the gospel

  2385. he had been

  2386. a foundation

  2387. stone

  2388. in the spread

  2389. of the gospel

  2390. into the

  2391. non-jewish

  2392. nations

  2393. he had

  2394. planted

  2395. churches

  2396. all around

  2397. south-west

  2398. turkey

  2399. into

  2400. Macedonia

  2401. and southern

  2402. greece

  2403. he had

  2404. preached

  2405. the gospel

  2406. in cyprus

  2407. he had

  2408. gone round

  2409. the then

  2410. known world

  2411. from Antioch

  2412. to Jerusalem

  2413. and declared

  2414. the good news

  2415. of Jesus

  2416. Christ

  2417. but he knew

  2418. eventually

  2419. inexorably

  2420. time will be

  2421. no more

  2422. he knew

  2423. that none

  2424. of us

  2425. have forever

  2426. none of us

  2427. the god of wonders

  2428. through whom

  2429. the world

  2430. came into being

  2431. at one point

  2432. will announce

  2433. the end of time

  2434. as we know

  2435. it

  2436. and that

  2437. will be

  2438. on

  2439. that day

  2440. so Paul

  2441. turns to

  2442. that day

  2443. speaks

  2444. in other

  2445. letters

  2446. of the day

  2447. of judgment

  2448. and an

  2449. account being

  2450. taken

  2451. he speaks

  2452. of books

  2453. being opened

  2454. and all

  2455. being held

  2456. to account

  2457. that's the

  2458. truth of the

  2459. gospel

  2460. and it's

  2461. wonderful

  2462. that the

  2463. gospel doesn't

  2464. hide from

  2465. these things

  2466. and neither

  2467. must we

  2468. we must

  2469. gently

  2470. and persuasively

  2471. and often

  2472. as we can

  2473. with patience

  2474. and love

  2475. speak the

  2476. truth

  2477. in righteousness

  2478. we must

  2479. speak the

  2480. truth

  2481. there was a

  2482. incident back

  2483. in the 80s

  2484. when

  2485. Brezhnev

  2486. the Russian

  2487. president I guess

  2488. he was at the

  2489. time of the

  2490. old USSR

  2491. he died

  2492. and in a

  2493. state controlled

  2494. effort to keep

  2495. the news from

  2496. getting out

  2497. the moment he

  2498. died

  2499. he switched

  2500. every TZV

  2501. station in

  2502. the USSR

  2503. to the same

  2504. program

  2505. every channel

  2506. available was

  2507. playing Swan

  2508. Lake

  2509. so in an

  2510. instant

  2511. everyone in

  2512. Russia knew

  2513. something was

  2514. up

  2515. something was

  2516. going on

  2517. something was

  2518. going down

  2519. and the

  2520. state was

  2521. trying to

  2522. keep it

  2523. in and

  2524. hidden

  2525. and to

  2526. themselves

  2527. and years

  2528. since then

  2529. a commentator

  2530. on Russian

  2531. affairs said

  2532. in the Soviet

  2533. Union the

  2534. relationship with

  2535. the truth

  2536. was complicated

  2537. complicated

  2538. sometimes

  2539. if we're

  2540. honest

  2541. we would be

  2542. guilty

  2543. as charged

  2544. of something

  2545. similar

  2546. if we are

  2547. not sharing

  2548. the whole

  2549. counsel of

  2550. God and

  2551. the truth

  2552. of the

  2553. gospel with

  2554. those around

  2555. us

  2556. which is why

  2557. we have twice

  2558. in chapter 1

  2559. this phrase

  2560. do not be

  2561. ashamed

  2562. don't be

  2563. ashamed

  2564. and don't

  2565. allow your

  2566. relationship with

  2567. the truth to

  2568. become complicated

  2569. don't avoid

  2570. telling people

  2571. what they need

  2572. to know

  2573. most of all

  2574. to be ready

  2575. for that

  2576. day

  2577. four qualities

  2578. then stand

  2579. out in this

  2580. incredible letter

  2581. and in these

  2582. verses

  2583. we have a

  2584. burning conviction

  2585. a crucial

  2586. confidence

  2587. a humble

  2588. awareness

  2589. and a

  2590. great

  2591. anticipation

  2592. and I think

  2593. Christian friends

  2594. we should find

  2595. all these

  2596. qualities

  2597. in our hearts

  2598. as we gather

  2599. tomorrow at the

  2600. Lord's table

  2601. we gather

  2602. with a burning

  2603. conviction

  2604. I know

  2605. whom I have

  2606. believed

  2607. and that burning

  2608. conviction

  2609. draws us

  2610. with a crucial

  2611. confidence

  2612. to his

  2613. table

  2614. and we sit

  2615. there

  2616. in humble

  2617. awareness

  2618. that he is

  2619. able

  2620. and we eat

  2621. and we drink

  2622. together

  2623. the great

  2624. anticipation

  2625. of receiving

  2626. his grace

  2627. in a special

  2628. measure

  2629. the same

  2630. grace

  2631. but in a

  2632. special way

  2633. we remember

  2634. the body

  2635. and blood

  2636. we remember

  2637. the cost

  2638. of our

  2639. salvation

  2640. we remember

  2641. our saviour

  2642. we do so

  2643. humbly
