  1. our hearts to sing praise to God. Let us hear first of all these few words from the Bible.

  2. Give thanks to the God of heaven for his steadfast love endures forever. Let us together worship him

  3. in song from Psalm 122 from the Scottish Psalter, page 416 in our Blue Psalm books, Psalm 122,

  4. singing from the beginning of this psalm. We'll sing the whole psalm to the tune free church.

  5. I joy to enter the house of God, go up they said to me, Jerusalem within thy gates our feet shall

  6. standing be. Jerusalem as a city is compactly built together and to that place the tribes go up,

  7. the tribes of God go thither. Psalm 122, the whole psalm to the praise of God.

  8. I joy went to the house of God, go up they said to me, Jerusalem within thy gates our feet shall

  9. sound in me. Jerusalem as a city is compactly built together and to that place the tribes go up,

  10. the tribes of God go up they said to me. Jerusalem as a city is compactly built together and to that place the

  11. of the world of God. Jerusalem as a city is compactly built together and to that place the

  12. the built-in thing and the protection of wherever the jerseys came from peace or the travelling

  13. of Christ. Specifically, what worship seems to be so spoiled and to that place the

  14. of Christ still remains true. Jerusalem as a city is compactly built together and to that place the

  15. of Christ still remains peaceful within thy bones remain. Before worship may return high Him for the

  16. And ever may thy goddesses prosperity retain.

  17. Now for thy chains and reverence it is thee in thee I'll say.

  18. And for the house of God our Lord I'll seek thy good always.

  19. Let's pray together.

  20. Gracious God our loving Heavenly Father how these words stir our hearts.

  21. How it is we enjoy and rejoice in having this time together in worship this morning.

  22. On the beginning of a new week on this your day in your house to sing praise to your name.

  23. And may it be Lord today that this psalm would be our portion, our experience, our motto.

  24. That we would truly in our hearts be full of joy in coming in here together today to worship before you.

  25. Lord our God go before us in what we do here.

  26. And we pray that in this morning's service of worship by word and by sacrament your name would be glorified.

  27. The gospel of Jesus Christ would be upheld.

  28. The wonder of Jesus would be extolled before us and within us.

  29. And that the kingdom of righteousness would expand in our hearts and through our witness.

  30. Be with us Lord as we spend this time together before you.

  31. We bow in worship.

  32. We acknowledge you.

  33. We adore you.

  34. We sing praise of your holiness, your justice, your goodness, your truth and above all.

  35. We give thanks this morning for Jesus Christ, your son, the one who came into this world.

  36. Having covenanted from all eternity to redeem a people to himself, he came.

  37. And in that hour of suffering and as the hour of the cross loomed heavy upon him,

  38. as the darkness closed in, as impending judgment came closer and closer,

  39. we hear our Savior saying, Father, if it be your will, let this cup pass from me.

  40. Nevertheless, not my will but yours be done.

  41. And so we say today, Hallelujah.

  42. What a Savior.

  43. Be with us as we remember the cost of our salvation.

  44. Be with us as we remember what it cost our Redeemer

  45. to secure the forgiveness of sin

  46. that sets us aright with you, the living God,

  47. that brings us from darkness and enmity to light and life,

  48. that brings us from being far off and strangers of the commonwealth of Israel

  49. and aliens to the promises of God,

  50. right in to the very family of God.

  51. What a Savior.

  52. And we pray today that our songs of praise would unite our hearts,

  53. that our sense of purpose and joy would be evident and felt amongst us and between us.

  54. And when we go from here, we pray, Lord, then that you would draw near to us,

  55. that you would bless your word to our hearts,

  56. that you would undertake for us as we study together the scriptures

  57. and as we remember the death of our Lord and Savior.

  58. Be pleased, Lord, to bless us with your presence and your grace.

  59. By word and sacrament, Lord, we come to you,

  60. hungering and thirsting after righteousness.

  61. So here as we pray this morning, young and old alike,

  62. you know, Lord, our thoughts.

  63. You know our concerns.

  64. You know the things that worry us and leave us anxious,

  65. that rob us of sleep and keep us from feeling a sense of peace in life.

  66. Sometimes, Lord, life itself is so heavy.

  67. And we pray today for any who are burdened and weighed down.

  68. We pray, Lord, for those who are struggling in life,

  69. who are experiencing difficulty, hardship, ill health,

  70. unemployment, financial pressure and strain.

  71. For those, Lord, who in these days and months have felt loneliness.

  72. For those, Lord, struggling today with brokenness and addiction,

  73. we pray, Lord, for them all.

  74. That you would remember our communities, our island, our nation at this time.

  75. We pray especially, Lord, for any joining with us today online,

  76. those who are watching from home.

  77. And we pray, Lord, for them.

  78. We pray for those who cannot be with us.

  79. And we pray, Lord, that above all, that your word would be blessed,

  80. that the word would run free in hearts and lives,

  81. and that Christ would be glorified,

  82. the one who was lifted up,

  83. that he might draw all men to him.

  84. Hear us this morning, we pray,

  85. as we seek forgiveness for our sin.

  86. Cleanse us and renew us, we pray,

  87. for Jesus' sake.

  88. Amen.

  89. Now, boys and girls,

  90. I just want to say something to you today about choices.

  91. Choices.

  92. Got here a little menu card.

  93. That's a little thing that comes very often to the post

  94. for weddings.

  95. And this wedding menu is sent along to people invited.

  96. And what you have to do nowadays is you make your choices

  97. and you send it back.

  98. So that they know before you turn up

  99. the meal that you're looking to have.

  100. So I don't know, boys and girls,

  101. what you would choose if you were given this menu.

  102. This is what the choice you would have.

  103. For the starter,

  104. you could have either

  105. homemade lentil soup

  106. or salmon.

  107. You would tick one of them

  108. if you wanted a starter.

  109. Then you'd be on to the main course

  110. and you could have top side of beef

  111. or chicken

  112. Balmoral.

  113. I'm sure there'd be another

  114. vegetarian option somewhere

  115. if that was your choice.

  116. You would tick the box

  117. and that would be served to you

  118. on the day of the wedding.

  119. And then the best bit,

  120. desserts.

  121. That's what it's all about, isn't it?

  122. You could have meringue

  123. with cream and berries

  124. or you could have

  125. strawberry cheesecake.

  126. You would tick your choice,

  127. you would put your name on the card,

  128. in it goes,

  129. and on the day of the wedding,

  130. the choices you make

  131. are served to you.

  132. Isn't that nice?

  133. It's good planning, isn't it?

  134. You're making your choice

  135. nice and early.

  136. And the thing about choices

  137. is that sometimes

  138. you don't get much warning.

  139. You have to make a decision

  140. on the spot

  141. and you make a choice.

  142. And this is when it gets quite difficult.

  143. If you're having a bad day,

  144. if you've been told

  145. to do your homework,

  146. if you've been told

  147. it's your turn for the dishes,

  148. if it's your turn

  149. to cut the grass

  150. or wash the car

  151. or walk the dog

  152. and you don't want

  153. to do any of these things,

  154. well, you're faced with a choice.

  155. Do what you've been asked to do

  156. by mum or dad

  157. or granny or granddad

  158. or don't.

  159. What are you going to do?

  160. And I want to tell you today,

  161. boys and girls,

  162. that sometimes

  163. it's good to prepare for choices

  164. and we can do that

  165. by asking God to help us.

  166. The Bible says,

  167. seek first

  168. the kingdom of God.

  169. We put them first

  170. in our choices,

  171. in little things like menus

  172. and particularly in days

  173. that are difficult

  174. or trying,

  175. if big brother's

  176. getting on your nerves,

  177. if little sister's

  178. going off with your favorite object

  179. and you're going to make

  180. a choice to cause chaos

  181. or just be a good brother

  182. or sister,

  183. that's another choice

  184. you're going to have to make.

  185. Ask yourself at that time,

  186. what choice would God

  187. want me to make?

  188. And if we ask that question

  189. as we make choices,

  190. we are in a far better position

  191. than if we don't

  192. and we are really close

  193. to God

  194. and if we're close to God,

  195. we're going to want to,

  196. please him.

  197. So the next time

  198. choices come your way,

  199. next time there's a decision

  200. to be made,

  201. say to yourself,

  202. what choice would God

  203. want me to make?

  204. Well, let's read together

  205. from God's word this morning

  206. two passages

  207. from the New Testament.

  208. First of all,

  209. from the Gospel of John.

  210. The Gospel of John.

  211. We'll read from chapter 10

  212. and verse 7

  213. and then we'll turn forward

  214. in our Bibles

  215. to 1 Corinthians

  216. and chapter 15.

  217. Reading first of all

  218. into the Gospel of John

    John 10 chapter mention

  219. chapter 10

  220. and verse 7.

  221. So Jesus again said to them,

  222. Truly, truly,

  223. I say to you,

  224. I am the door of the sheep.

  225. All who came before me

  226. are thieves and robbers,

  227. but the sheep

  228. did not listen to them.

  229. I am the door.

  230. If anyone enters by me,

  231. he will be saved

  232. and will go in and out

  233. and find pasture.

  234. The thief comes

  235. only to steal

  236. and kill and destroy.

  237. I came that they may have life

  238. and have it abundantly.

  239. I am the good shepherd.

  240. The good shepherd

  241. lays down his life

  242. for the sheep.

  243. He who has a hired hand

  244. and not a shepherd,

  245. who does not own the sheep,

  246. sees the wolf coming

  247. and leaves the sheep

  248. and flees

  249. and the wolf snatches them

  250. and scatters them.

  251. He flees

  252. because he's a hired hand

  253. and cares nothing

  254. for the sheep.

  255. I am the good shepherd.

  256. I know my own

  257. and my own know me.

  258. Just as the Father knows me

  259. and I know the Father

  260. and I lay down my life

  261. for the sheep

  262. and I have other sheep

  263. that are not of this fold,

  264. I must bring them also

  265. and they will listen

  266. to my voice

  267. so there will be one flock,

  268. one shepherd.

  269. For this reason,

  270. the Father loves me

  271. because I lay down my life

  272. that I may take it up again.

  273. No one takes it from me

  274. but I lay it down

  275. of my own accord.

  276. I have authority

  277. to lay it down

  278. and I have authority

  279. to take it up again.

  280. This charge

  281. I have received

  282. from my Father.

  283. There was again

  284. a division among the Jews

  285. because of these words.

  286. Many of them said,

  287. He is a demon

  288. and is insane.

  289. Why listen to him?

  290. Others said,

  291. These are not the words

  292. of one who was oppressed

  293. by a demon.

  294. Can a demon

  295. open the eyes?

  296. of the blind?

  297. I'm turning forward

  298. to 1 Corinthians

  299. in chapter 15,

  300. reading this chapter

  301. from the beginning.

  302. Paul's letter

  303. to the Corinthians,

  304. his first letter,

  305. chapter 15,

  306. reading this chapter

  307. from the beginning.

  308. Now I would remind you,

  309. brothers,

  310. of the gospel

  311. I preached to you,

  312. which you received

  313. and which you stand

  314. and by which you are being saved

  315. if you hold fast

  316. to the word

  317. I preached to you

  318. unless you believed in vain.

  319. For I delivered to you

  320. as of first importance

  321. what I also received,

  322. that Christ died for our sins

  323. in accordance with the Scriptures,

  324. that he was buried,

  325. that he was raised

  326. in the third day

  327. in accordance

  328. with the Scriptures,

  329. and that he appeared

  330. to Cephas,

  331. then to the twelve.

  332. Then he appeared

  333. to more than 500 brothers

  334. at one time,

  335. most of whom

  336. are still alive,

  337. though some

  338. have fallen asleep.

  339. Then he appeared

  340. to James

  341. and to all the apostles.

  342. Last of all,

  343. as to one untimely born,

  344. he appeared also to me,

  345. for I am the least

  346. of the apostles,

  347. unworthy to be called

  348. an apostle,

  349. because I persecuted

  350. the church of God.

  351. But by the grace of God

  352. I am what I am,

  353. and his grace toward me

  354. was not in vain.

  355. On the contrary,

  356. I worked harder

  357. than any of them,

  358. though it was not I,

  359. but the grace of God

  360. that was with me.

  361. Whether then it was I

  362. or they,

  363. so we preach,

  364. and so you believed.

  365. Amen.

  366. May God bless his word

  367. to our hearts,

  368. and to his name

  369. be the praise.

  370. I'll sing again

  371. to the praise of God

  372. from Sing Psalms

  373. and the 23rd Psalm.

  374. On page 28

  375. in our blue psalm books,

  376. Sing Psalms

  377. and Psalm 23.

  378. We'll sing this whole psalm

  379. together to the tune

  380. Tarwathi.

  381. The Lord

  382. is my shepherd,

  383. no want shall I know.

  384. He makes me lie down

  385. where the green pastures grow.

  386. He leads me to rest

  387. where the calm waters flow.

  388. Psalm 23,

  389. we will sing together

  390. to God's praise.

  391. Amen.

  392. The Lord is my shepherd,

  393. no want shall I know.

  394. He makes me lie down

  395. where the green pastures grow.

  396. He leads me to rest

  397. where the calm waters flow.

  398. My wandering steps,

  399. he brings back to his way.

  400. Hence they pass off

  401. my justness,

  402. making me safe.

  403. and this he has done

  404. this great day

  405. to display.

  406. Though I walk in death,

  407. how he hurt our messes near.

  408. He wants you are with me,

  409. no evil I fear.

  410. your God and yourself

  411. bring me comfort and cheer.

  412. In the sight of my enemies,

  413. and the evil you spread.

  414. The oil of rejoicing you pour on my head,

  415. my cup,

  416. O earth,

  417. those hand and graciously fed.

  418. So surely your covenant,

  419. and mercy and grace,

  420. will follow me closely

  421. in all of my ways.

  422. I will go to heaven

  423. in the highest

  424. of the Lord

  425. all my days.

  426. We'll bow in prayer together.

  427. Let us pray.

  428. Lord, we bow this morning together.

  429. We sing praise to your name.

  430. We acknowledge your holiness in prayer.

  431. We bring to you our petitions

  432. and our supplications

  433. with thanksgiving.

  434. We pour out our hearts to you, Lord,

  435. conscious of that great declaration

  436. of the Christian church.

  437. The Lord is my shepherd.

  438. We pray this evening as we,

  439. today as we reflect on

  440. the truth of the gospel.

  441. As we reflect on

  442. the cost of our salvation.

  443. As we remember our Lord

  444. till he come again.

  445. That you would be here with us.

  446. We thank you that as we open

  447. the scriptures,

  448. we hear you speak.

  449. We have before us

  450. the very word of the living God.

  451. And we pray today that that word

  452. would take root

  453. in our hearts and lives.

  454. That we would grow in grace,

  455. deepen our faith,

  456. and further grow up into him,

  457. the head of the church,

  458. our King and Saviour.

  459. Be with us, Lord,

  460. today we pray through word and sacrament.

  461. Our need is great.

  462. And so we come, Lord,

  463. seeking your blessing and filling.

  464. We would seek you

  465. with our whole heart today.

  466. And we would ask that you would

  467. address us

  468. at the deepest point of our needs.

  469. and that the Spirit would move

  470. amongst us,

  471. teaching us and leading us

  472. to see the one

  473. who gave himself for us.

  474. Jesus, our King and friend.

  475. The one who is the door.

  476. The one through whom

  477. we are bid come

  478. and enter onto

  479. the highway of holiness.

  480. May we do so, Lord,

  481. humbly and expectantly.

  482. And so, Lord,

  483. we gather in anticipation.

  484. We look upward.

  485. We look to Christ.

  486. We come to the throne of grace

  487. via the cross,

  488. where we go for the forgiveness

  489. of sin

  490. that so often besets us

  491. and entangles us.

  492. Lord, we are conscious

  493. this morning

  494. of the gospel's declaration

  495. that the wages of sin

  496. is death.

  497. But the gift of God

  498. is eternal life

  499. through Christ Jesus,

  500. our Lord.

  501. So, Lord,

  502. come among us.

  503. Bless us and do us good.

  504. Open our hearts and minds

  505. and bless us

  506. by your word this morning

  507. and the sacrament

  508. as we share this meal

  509. together at the table.

  510. In Jesus' name we ask it.

  511. Amen.

  512. Amen.

  513. The death of Christ

  514. in our place

  515. to satisfy

  516. the demands

  517. of divine justice

  518. and appease

  519. the wrath of God

  520. is of the very substance

  521. of the gospel.

  522. And that's what we find

  523. when we turn together

  524. in our Bibles

  525. to 1 Corinthians

  526. in chapter 15

  527. where the apostle,

  528. in writing to this church

  529. that he was so intimately

  530. aware of

  531. and wanting to encourage them

  532. and build them up

  533. and keep them

  534. on the right path,

  535. that's what he's been doing

  536. these previous 14 chapters,

  537. teaching

  538. and pleading

  539. and exhorting

  540. that they would

  541. again appreciate

  542. and come to a deeper

  543. understanding

  544. of the gospel of God.

  545. And so,

  546. we find him here

  547. in chapter 15

  548. beginning to wrap things up

  549. and draw his conclusions.

  550. And so,

  551. he says,

  552. now I would remind you,

  553. brothers,

  554. and that word there,

  555. brothers,

  556. adelphoi,

  557. was a plural term

  558. used in the ancient

  559. Greek tongue

  560. to refer to

  561. brothers and sisters.

  562. And so,

  563. to read it

  564. perhaps more accurately

  565. would be,

  566. now I remind you,

  567. brothers and sisters

  568. of the gospel

  569. I preached to you

  570. which you received

  571. in which you stand

  572. and by which you are

  573. being saved

  574. if you hold fast

  575. to the word

  576. I preached to you

  577. unless you believed

  578. in vain.

  579. Why speak like that,

  580. Paul?

  581. Because there were

  582. tensions here

  583. and there were

  584. divisions

  585. and people were saying,

  586. well,

  587. Paul's not much

  588. of a preacher,

  589. is he?

  590. And in that,

  591. they were going after

  592. the messenger.

  593. And then you had

  594. other schools of thought

  595. that were saying,

  596. well,

  597. if you're saved,

  598. retire.

  599. Just live off

  600. whoever's got money.

  601. You don't need to do it.

  602. You're a child of God.

  603. Sit down.

  604. You don't need to do

  605. anything else.

  606. And so,

  607. what was happening there

  608. was it wasn't the messenger

  609. being attacked,

  610. it was the message.

  611. And this pincer movement

  612. was coming against the church

  613. as it is today.

  614. Nothing has changed.

  615. The devil will attack

  616. messengers

  617. and the message

  618. in his attempt,

  619. in his ferocious

  620. enmity toward the gospel

  621. to try and drive the gospel

  622. out of hearts and lives

  623. and keep sinners

  624. from coming

  625. to a knowledge

  626. of their need

  627. to be born again.

  628. And so,

  629. Paul is pleading here

  630. that they would stand fast

  631. or hold fast

  632. to the word

  633. I preach to you,

  634. the gospel of grace.

  635. And there's a wonderful

  636. and very famous

  637. description of

  638. what he did

  639. when he came among them

  640. back there in chapters

  641. one and two

  642. of this wonderful letter.

  643. Chapter one and two

  644. of first Corinthians.

  645. It would help if I didn't

  646. turn to chapter one

  647. of Romans.

  648. And in first Corinthians two,

  649. he says,

  650. I came to you,

  651. brothers and sisters,

  652. I did not come proclaiming

  653. to you the testimony

  654. of God with lofty speech

  655. of wisdom,

  656. for I decided to know

  657. nothing among you

  658. except Jesus Christ

  659. and him crucified.

  660. And I was with you

  661. in weakness,

  662. in fear,

  663. in much trembling.

  664. And my speech

  665. and my message

  666. were not implausible

  667. words of wisdom,

  668. but in demonstration

  669. of the spirit

  670. and of power,

  671. that your faith

  672. might not rest

  673. in the wisdom of men,

  674. but in the power of God.

  675. And so he zeroes in

  676. on the focus

  677. Christian men and women

  678. need to retain

  679. and work at

  680. and develop

  681. and our focus

  682. must be

  683. the cross of Christ.

  684. Who died there?

  685. Why he died there?

  686. And what it means

  687. for us all today.

  688. And so he says

  689. in verse three,

  690. as he continues

  691. to drive home

  692. the need to get this right

  693. and be specific

  694. and zeroed in

  695. on what the gospel is.

  696. Verse three,

  697. chapter 15,

  698. for I delivered to you

  699. as of first importance

  700. what I also received,

  701. that Christ

  702. died for our sins

  703. in accordance

  704. with the scriptures.

  705. And he was buried

  706. and he was raised

  707. on the third day

  708. in accordance

  709. with the scriptures.

  710. The message

  711. was under attack

  712. in Corinth.

  713. The message

  714. is under attack

  715. in Stornoway today.

  716. this message

  717. of Jesus Christ

  718. the righteous,

  719. the Son of God

  720. who came into the world

  721. to do what?

  722. To seek and to save

  723. the lost.

  724. How did he do it?

  725. He gave himself

  726. for us.

  727. So that statement

  728. really does come

  729. into its own

  730. when we say

  731. the death of Christ

  732. in our place

  733. to satisfy

  734. the demands

  735. of divine justice

  736. and appease

  737. the wrath

  738. of God

  739. is the very

  740. substance

  741. of the gospel.

  742. It's good news.

  743. It's good news

  744. for Stornoway today.

  745. It's good news

  746. for Scotland today

  747. that there is

  748. a saviour.

  749. And of course

  750. the good news

  751. follows the declaration

  752. that there's

  753. bad news.

  754. And you see,

  755. that's the thing

  756. about the gospel.

  757. The gospel

  758. is neither a discussion

  759. nor a debate.

  760. It is a declaration.

  761. I would remind you

  762. brothers and sisters

  763. of the gospel

  764. I preach to you.

  765. This is the apostolic

  766. message,

  767. the apostolic

  768. preaching of the cross,

  769. the apostolic

  770. emphasis of our need

  771. to be born again

  772. by repentance

  773. and faith in Christ

  774. by coming to him

  775. and trusting in him

  776. as Lord and Saviour.

  777. It's a wonderful simplicity

  778. and yet an incredible

  779. depth to what Paul

  780. goes on here to see

  781. in verses 3 and 4.

  782. I deliver to you

  783. as a first importance.

  784. See where he started

  785. with what they needed

  786. to know most of all.

  787. But then notice

  788. that he delivered to them

  789. what he received.

  790. And that tells us

  791. there's a wonderful

  792. balance to be struck here.

  793. And that balance

  794. is that the gospel

  795. is supreme.

  796. The gospel is not

  797. subject to the church

  798. or authenticated

  799. by the church.

  800. It's not the invention

  801. of the church.

  802. The church of Christ

  803. is subject

  804. to the gospel

  805. of Christ.

  806. We are here

  807. to declare him,

  808. to point to him,

  809. to say he is the one

  810. through whom

  811. men and women

  812. and boys and girls

  813. are saved.

  814. This is the wonderful

  815. gospel of Jesus Christ.

  816. So I want us to think

  817. today about what Paul

  818. says here in this

  819. summary,

  820. this revision,

  821. this calling

  822. the Christian men

  823. and women,

  824. back to the fundamentals

  825. of the gospel,

  826. keeping them zeroed

  827. in on the cross,

  828. lest they fade away

  829. and drift away

  830. into uncertainty

  831. and ambiguity

  832. and agnosticism

  833. and all these awful

  834. things that are

  835. doing the rounds

  836. today as they were

  837. back then.

  838. And why do we find

  839. this emphasis here

  840. on the death

  841. of Christ?

  842. Christ.

  843. Because he was

  844. writing to a

  845. Christian congregation

  846. in a Greek city

  847. some 2,000 years ago

  848. that was full of

  849. philosophy

  850. and culture

  851. and thinking

  852. and teaching

  853. and schools of thought

  854. that utterly rejected

  855. any concept of

  856. resurrection from the dead.

  857. It was in the DNA

  858. of the city.

  859. And that's where

  860. the Christian church

  861. had been planted,

  862. that's where the

  863. congregation had grown,

  864. and began to experience

  865. difficulty and troubles

  866. and hard times.

  867. And so Paul writes them

  868. and he zeroes in

  869. on this essential truth

  870. that I think it was

  871. John Stott that spoke

  872. about,

  873. the irreducible minimum

  874. of the Christian gospel,

  875. the death

  876. and resurrection

  877. of Christ

  878. in the place

  879. of sinners.

  880. Verse 12

  881. in this chapter

  882. indicates the thinking

  883. there that's

  884. perhaps hindering

  885. the Christians

  886. from progressing.

  887. If Christ is proclaimed

  888. as raised from the dead,

  889. how can some of you say

  890. there is no resurrection

  891. of the dead?

  892. So the thinking

  893. that surrounded the church,

  894. the thinking in culture

  895. and philosophy

  896. and schools of thought

  897. that surrounded the church

  898. was beginning

  899. to make its way

  900. into the church.

  901. The world

  902. was beginning

  903. to penetrate

  904. into the thinking

  905. and therefore

  906. the theology

  907. and therefore

  908. the practice

  909. of the Christian church.

  910. It was ever thus.

  911. It is a constant

  912. source of attack

  913. that we must be vigilant of,

  914. that we don't allow

  915. culture

  916. to set the tone

  917. for what we do

  918. and what we believe

  919. and how we operate

  920. as the church of Christ.

  921. Only Jesus does that

  922. by and through

  923. his word.

  924. So let's think

  925. about this

  926. as we prepare

  927. to share together

  928. in our Lord's Supper

  929. and remember

  930. the death of Christ

  931. till they come again.

  932. What does Paul

  933. want us to

  934. take to heart today?

  935. Verse 3 tells us,

  936. first of all,

  937. that the death

  938. of Jesus

  939. was promised.

  940. The death of Jesus

  941. was promised.

  942. I delivered to you

  943. as of first importance

  944. what I also received

  945. that Christ

  946. died for our sins

  947. in accordance

  948. with the Scripture.

  949. And so Paul,

  950. having said

  951. that this message

  952. is authenticated

  953. by its source,

  954. the Almighty God

  955. who gave his Son

  956. that we might live,

  957. so he has now

  958. stipulated

  959. that not being

  960. a master

  961. over the message

  962. but a servant

  963. of the message

  964. of Christ,

  965. he is now

  966. underlining

  967. this declaration

  968. that Christ Jesus

  969. came into the world

  970. to save sinners.

  971. Places the Bible

  972. right at the center

  973. of what he's about

  974. to say,

  975. doesn't he?

  976. He says twice,

  977. he uses that phrase

  978. in accordance

  979. with the Scriptures.

  980. And that is a bedrock.

  981. Again,

  982. it's a bedrock

  983. that we face

  984. being under attack

  985. and being undermined

  986. today.

  987. He can't believe that.

  988. Surely you don't need

  989. all this Old Testament

  990. narrative.

  991. You don't really need

  992. these passages

  993. in Romans

  994. that questions

  995. and challenges

  996. our morality

  997. and that addresses

  998. issues of sexuality,

  999. that speaks about marriage,

  1000. it speaks about

  1001. how we conduct ourselves.

  1002. No,

  1003. sure,

  1004. that's up to us.

  1005. We try our best.

1006. We do what we are

  1007. to be upstanding people

  1008. in society.

1009. And so what we find

  1010. constantly

  1011. is the world

  1012. chipping away

  1013. at this very phrase,

  1014. that our declaration,

  1015. which is made

  1016. in accordance

  1017. with the Scriptures,

1018. that's out of sync today.

  1019. That's unpopular today.

  1020. That's old school.

  1021. That's Reformation.

  1022. Knox,

  1023. don't talk to us

  1024. about John Knox.

  1025. He was surely,

  1026. he was a bigot,

  1027. he was a secretarian,

  1028. he was a misogynist.

  1029. And so they destroy

  1030. the character

  1031. of the messenger

  1032. and then go after

  1033. the message.

1034. You can't say that to me.

  1035. You can't tell me

  1036. I'm a sinner.

  1037. And yet,

  1038. what does God ask

  1039. of his church today?

1040. Why has God raised up

  1041. and placed his church

  1042. on earth,

  1043. the church militant,

  1044. to assert,

  1045. maintain,

  1046. and defend?

  1047. And unless

  1048. and until

  1049. we are born again,

  1050. we remain

  1051. under the wrath

  1052. and curse of God.

  1053. And so we share

  1054. this message

  1055. in patience

  1056. and humility.

  1057. We share this message

  1058. in love

  1059. again

  1060. and again

  1061. and again.

  1062. And we refuse

  1063. to allow the world

  1064. to undermine

  1065. our grasp of Scripture

  1066. and our reverence

  1067. of Scripture

  1068. because it is from

  1069. the Scripture

  1070. that the Gospel

  1071. has been declared

  1072. to the world.

  1073. And that message

  1074. is Christ died

  1075. for our sins

  1076. in accordance

  1077. of the Scripture.

  1078. You see,

  1079. everything we know

  1080. of Christ today,

  1081. it comes from

  1082. God's Word.

  1083. It's a proclamation

  1084. that we find

  1085. long ago

  1086. at many times

  1087. and in many ways

1088. God spoke to our fathers

  1089. by the prophets,

1090. but in these last days

1091. he has spoken to us

  1092. by his Son.

  1093. All Scripture

  1094. is breathed out

  1095. by God

  1096. and profitable

  1097. for teaching,

  1098. reproof,

  1099. correction,

  1100. and training.

  1101. This death of Jesus

  1102. was promised.

  1103. In the Old Testament,

  1104. we have anticipation

  1105. and straining forward

  1106. and looking forward.

  1107. God is saying

  1108. in the Old Testament

  1109. Scriptures,

  1110. I will send

  1111. a Redeemer.

  1112. And then we come

  1113. into the New Testament

  1114. and we're looking back

1115. and through the New Testament

  1116. we hear God saying,

  1117. I have sent you,

  1118. my Son.

  1119. This is my beloved.

  1120. Hear Him.

  1121. And so we assert,

  1122. maintain,

  1123. and defend

  1124. on the basis

  1125. of being a Bible-based,

  1126. Spirit-filled,

  1127. Christ-centered church

1128. that the death of Jesus

  1129. was promised.

1130. We write at the beginning

  1131. of the Scripture,

  1132. we find the promise

  1133. that God will send

  1134. His Son

  1135. into this world.

  1136. And the New Testament

  1137. furnishes us

  1138. with the understanding

  1139. we need

  1140. as to the importance

  1141. and absolute centrality

1142. of the death of Christ

  1143. in our place.

  1144. Secondly,

  1145. this,

  1146. the death was promised.

  1147. This death was real.

  1148. His death was real.

  1149. Verse 4

  1150. puts it as plainly

  1151. as is possible.

  1152. He was buried.

  1153. He was buried.

  1154. The Christian gospel

  1155. is a message

  1156. of deliverance

  1157. that comes

  1158. through the death

  1159. of the deliverer.

  1160. No other world religion

  1161. comes close to this.

  1162. No other world religion

  1163. even begins

  1164. to approach

  1165. the magnitude

  1166. of these words,

  1167. the solemnity

  1168. and depth

  1169. and wonder

  1170. and beauty

1171. of what we're told here.

  1172. The Son of God,

  1173. the Lamb of God,

  1174. the Lord of glory,

  1175. through whom

  1176. all things were made.

  1177. The one who is

  1178. altogether sufficient.

  1179. The one who is

  1180. the rose of share

1181. and the lily of the valley.

  1182. The one that is

1183. the apple of God's eye.

1184. What do we read here?

  1185. He was buried.

  1186. This is the gospel.

1187. This is the good news.

1188. That just as the babe,

  1189. Jesus,

1190. was laid in the manger,

  1191. so the torn

  1192. and bloody body

  1193. of Jesus

  1194. in his early 30s

  1195. was laid

  1196. in a grave

  1197. without life

  1198. outside

  1199. Jerusalem.

  1200. What happened

  1201. on the cross

  1202. is abundantly clear

  1203. and you would need

  1204. to have

  1205. a heart of stone

  1206. and a mind

  1207. that resembles stone

  1208. to say,

  1209. well,

  1210. the Bible

  1211. doesn't say

  1212. that Jesus

  1213. died.

  1214. That is the

  1215. response

  1216. of the

  1217. Islamic world

  1218. to the claims

  1219. of the gospel.

  1220. They

  1221. revere Jesus.

  1222. They honor Jesus.

  1223. They say

1224. Jesus was a great man.

  1225. But he didn't

  1226. really die.

1227. And even if he did die,

  1228. he certainly

  1229. was not

  1230. the Son of God.

  1231. What happened

  1232. on the cross?

  1233. The Bible

  1234. says otherwise.

  1235. His vital

  1236. functions

  1237. shut down.

  1238. His heart

  1239. straining

  1240. for six hours

  1241. to pump

  1242. deoxygenated blood

  1243. around his body

  1244. finally arrested.

  1245. And ultimately,

  1246. after six hours

  1247. of suffering,

  1248. Jesus' breath

  1249. gave out

  1250. and he died.

  1251. With all his

  1252. vital functions

  1253. having stopped,

  1254. even then,

  1255. the world

  1256. was not finished

  1257. with him

  1258. because a Roman

  1259. soldier under

  1260. instruction thrust

  1261. a spear into

  1262. his chest

  1263. to confirm

  1264. death

  1265. had done

  1266. its work.

  1267. The death

  1268. of Jesus

  1269. was real.

  1270. Why do we

  1271. reflect on this?

  1272. What did Jesus

  1273. tell us to do?

  1274. Do this

  1275. in remembrance

  1276. of me.

  1277. The bread

  1278. and the wine

  1279. that we're

  1280. about to share

  1281. together

  1282. speak powerfully

  1283. and vividly

  1284. of this moment.

  1285. And they say

  1286. to each one

  1287. of us

  1288. as we

  1289. take our bread

  1290. and as we

  1291. drink our wine

  1292. that the cost

  1293. of our salvation

  1294. was nothing

  1295. less

  1296. and nothing

  1297. other

  1298. than the life

  1299. of Jesus Christ,

  1300. the Son of God.

  1301. He

  1302. was

  1303. buried.

  1304. his death

  1305. was real.

  1306. What else

  1307. can we say

  1308. of this?

  1309. We must say

  1310. this as we

  1311. move on.

  1312. That for

  1313. Christianity

  1314. to be genuine,

  1315. for the hope

  1316. of the gospel

  1317. to be held

  1318. out as a

  1319. life-transforming

  1320. message of

  1321. grace and

  1322. splendor and

  1323. wonder and

  1324. forgiveness,

  1325. it utterly

  1326. depends upon

  1327. the death of

  1328. Jesus being

  1329. genuine.

  1330. And it

  1331. begins to

  1332. push us

  1333. back from

  1334. that.

  1335. You say,

  1336. well,

  1337. why?

  1338. Why the

  1339. cross?

  1340. Why this

  1341. awful death?

  1342. Why was it

  1343. that he

  1344. breathed his

  1345. last on that

  1346. cross and

  1347. laid his

  1348. head and

  1349. gave up

  1350. his life?

  1351. As you

  1352. read there

  1353. in John's

  1354. gospel and

  1355. chapter 10,

  1356. for this

  1357. reason the

  1358. father loves

  1359. me,

  1360. because I

  1361. lay down

  1362. my life

  1363. that I

  1364. may take

  1365. it up

  1366. again.

  1367. No one

  1368. takes it

  1369. from me,

  1370. but I

  1371. lay it

  1372. down of

  1373. my own

  1374. accord.

  1375. I have

  1376. authority to

  1377. lay it

  1378. down and

  1379. I have

  1380. authority to

  1381. take it

  1382. up again.

  1383. charge I

  1384. have received

  1385. from my

  1386. father.

  1387. Jesus

  1388. himself

  1389. affirms in

  1390. these words,

  1391. his death

  1392. was real.

  1393. The Christ

  1394. of the

  1395. Bible was

  1396. buried

  1397. without

  1398. life.

  1399. His death

  1400. then was

  1401. promised and

  1402. his death

  1403. was real,

  1404. but we

  1405. don't fixate

  1406. on it.

  1407. We don't

  1408. stay there.

  1409. We don't

  1410. stay in the

  1411. graveyard.

  1412. We don't

  1413. stay at

  1414. the foot

  1415. of the

  1416. cross.

  1417. We don't

  1418. reflect

  1419. constantly

  1420. and permanently

  1421. with the

  1422. fixation on

  1423. the graphic

  1424. scene of

  1425. the cross.

  1426. Yes,

  1427. we survey

  1428. it.

  1429. We study.

  1430. We do

  1431. so humbly.

  1432. We do

  1433. so with a

  1434. sense of

  1435. awe and

  1436. wonder.

  1437. When we

  1438. survey that

  1439. scene and

  1440. see there

  1441. nothing other

  1442. than the

  1443. Son of

  1444. God

  1445. dead on

  1446. the cross

  1447. outside

  1448. Jerusalem,

  1449. this is the

  1450. message of

  1451. good news.

  1452. I think

  1453. it was

  1454. that

  1455. sentiment

  1456. that

  1457. perhaps

  1458. moved

  1459. McShane

  1460. to write

  1461. these

  1462. words

  1463. in one

  1464. of his

  1465. hymns.

  1466. When I

  1467. stand before

  1468. the throne

  1469. dressed in

  1470. beauty not

  1471. my own,

  1472. when I

  1473. see thee as

  1474. thou art,

  1475. love thee

  1476. with unsinning

  1477. heart,

  1478. then,

  1479. Lord,

  1480. shall I

  1481. fully know

  1482. not till

  1483. then how

  1484. much I

  1485. owe.

  1486. we owe

  1487. him

  1488. everything

  1489. because he

  1490. gave

  1491. everything.

  1492. He gave

  1493. himself

  1494. for us,

  1495. not just

  1496. by taking

  1497. on the

  1498. flesh of

  1499. the incarnation

  1500. and being

  1501. a good

  1502. man.

  1503. Jesus

  1504. was truly

  1505. man and

  1506. truly God

  1507. and he

  1508. died on

  1509. that cross

  1510. that the

  1511. sins of

  1512. the world

  1513. might be

  1514. taken away.

  1515. He gave

  1516. what the

  1517. Bible calls

  1518. propitiation

  1519. to the

  1520. Father and

  1521. of our

  1522. sin he

  1523. effected

  1524. expiation.

  1525. He removed

  1526. our sin

  1527. by bearing

  1528. its guilt

  1529. on himself

  1530. and he

  1531. paid the

  1532. price by

  1533. giving his

  1534. life.

  1535. His death

  1536. was real.

  1537. But then

  1538. there's this,

  1539. Paul's

  1540. summation,

  1541. his calling

  1542. the Corinthian

  1543. Christians,

  1544. his calling

  1545. us today

  1546. by the

  1547. providence

  1548. of God

  1549. to just

  1550. reflect on

  1551. the heart

  1552. of the

  1553. gospel and

  1554. this glorious

  1555. message of

  1556. grace.

  1557. Yes,

  1558. there's

  1559. death here,

  1560. but death

  1561. did not

  1562. have the

  1563. last word

  1564. with Jesus

  1565. of Nazareth.

  1566. Joseph of

  1567. Arimathea

  1568. and Nicodemus

  1569. did not

  1570. in their

  1571. act of

  1572. devotion and

  1573. tenderness

  1574. and service

  1575. have the

  1576. last say

  1577. on the

  1578. life of

  1579. Jesus of

  1580. Nazareth.

  1581. For verse

  1582. four goes

  1583. on,

  1584. he was

  1585. raised on

  1586. the third

  1587. day in

  1588. accordance with

  1589. the scriptures.

  1590. And so this

  1591. tells us thirdly

  1592. that the death

  1593. of Jesus was

  1594. victorious.

  1595. Victorious.

  1596. You see,

  1597. death could

  1598. not hold

  1599. him.

  1600. And this is

  1601. where the good

  1602. news takes

  1603. on such

  1604. incredible

  1605. significance

  1606. and wonder.

  1607. The wages

  1608. of sin

  1609. is death,

  1610. but the

  1611. gift of

  1612. God is

  1613. eternal

  1614. life through

  1615. Christ Jesus

  1616. our Lord.

  1617. And that

  1618. empty tomb

  1619. that followed

  1620. the cross on

  1621. the third

  1622. day, that

  1623. first Easter

  1624. morning,

  1625. is evidence

  1626. in God's

  1627. declaration

  1628. to the

  1629. world that

  1630. the sacrifice

  1631. of his

  1632. son in a

  1633. room instead

  1634. was pleasing

  1635. and acceptable.

  1636. And so he

  1637. came, as he

  1638. says to us

  1639. in John

  1640. in chapter

  1641. 10, that

  1642. I laid

  1643. down my

  1644. life of

  1645. my own

  1646. accord.

  1647. I have

  1648. authority to

  1649. lay it

  1650. down and

  1651. I have

  1652. authority to

  1653. take it

  1654. up again.

  1655. This charge

  1656. I have

  1657. received from

  1658. my father.

  1659. And so we

  1660. survey this

  1661. wondrous

  1662. cross on

  1663. which the

  1664. prince of

  1665. glory died.

  1666. We are

  1667. humbled.

  1668. We're

  1669. awestruck.

  1670. We think,

  1671. how can it

  1672. be that he

  1673. was pierced

  1674. there for

  1675. our transgressive

  1676. possessions?

  1677. And then we

  1678. read on and

  1679. the gospel

  1680. moves on.

  1681. The gospel

  1682. moves from

  1683. the cross

  1684. and the

  1685. cemetery

  1686. into the

  1687. world.

  1688. It moves

  1689. from a

  1690. message of

  1691. the reality

  1692. and vitality

  1693. of Jesus'

  1694. death to

  1695. what impact

  1696. it has and

  1697. what meaning

  1698. it has for

  1699. you and I

  1700. today.

  1701. That he

  1702. was raised

  1703. on the

  1704. third day

  1705. in accordance

  1706. with the

  1707. scriptures.

  1708. There was

  1709. this thought

  1710. that maybe

  1711. maybe it's

  1712. not true.

  1713. Maybe there

  1714. isn't such a

  1715. resurrection and

  1716. maybe death

  1717. is death and

  1718. that's it.

  1719. We're all

  1720. finished.

  1721. Chapter 15

  1722. and verse 20

  1723. says,

  1724. in fact,

  1725. Christ has

  1726. been raised

  1727. from the

  1728. dead,

  1729. the first

  1730. fruits of

  1731. those who

  1732. have fallen

  1733. asleep.

  1734. If in this

  1735. life only we

  1736. have hoped

  1737. in Christ,

  1738. we are of

  1739. all people

  1740. most to be

  1741. pitied.

  1742. If the

  1743. message

  1744. stayed in

  1745. the cemetery,

  1746. if the

  1747. message was

  1748. just about a

  1749. good man

  1750. dying,

  1751. there would

  1752. be no

  1753. saviour

  1754. today because

  1755. a dead

  1756. saviour can

  1757. save nobody.

  1758. And so we

  1759. say today that

  1760. Jesus was

  1761. dead and

  1762. now is

  1763. alive.

  1764. And that's

  1765. how this

  1766. chapter goes

  1767. on as Paul

  1768. brings this

  1769. wonderful

  1770. reflection to

  1771. this glorious

  1772. conclusion.

  1773. Toward the

  1774. end of the

  1775. chapter in

  1776. verse 56,

  1777. he speaks of

  1778. death being

  1779. swallowed up in

  1780. victory.

  1781. Death, where

  1782. is your

  1783. victory?

  1784. O death,

  1785. where is

  1786. your sting?

  1787. The sting

  1788. of death

  1789. is sin,

  1790. and the

  1791. power of

  1792. sin is

  1793. the law.

  1794. But thanks

  1795. be to

  1796. God who

  1797. gives us

  1798. the victory

  1799. through our

  1800. Lord Jesus

  1801. Christ.

  1802. He died

  1803. that we

  1804. might be

  1805. forgiven.

  1806. He died

  1807. to make

  1808. us good,

  1809. that we

  1810. might go

  1811. at last

  1812. to heaven,

  1813. saved by

  1814. his precious

  1815. blood.

  1816. The death

  1817. of Jesus

  1818. is victorious.

  1819. the

  1820. women who

  1821. came in

  1822. their

  1823. devotion and

  1824. love and

  1825. brokenheartedness

  1826. that first

  1827. Easter morning

  1828. with arointments

  1829. and oils

  1830. seeking to

  1831. pay homage

  1832. and show

  1833. respect out

  1834. of pure

  1835. devotion and

  1836. sadness.

  1837. They had

  1838. nothing to

  1839. do, they

  1840. were redundant.

  1841. The oils and

  1842. the spices,

  1843. the pastes that

  1844. they were going

  1845. to anoint the

  1846. body with that

  1847. morning in the

  1848. tomb, they

  1849. were left

  1850. behind.

  1851. There was

  1852. nothing to

  1853. anoint because

  1854. the body

  1855. was not

  1856. there.

  1857. The grave

  1858. was empty

  1859. and the

  1860. angel said

  1861. to him,

  1862. why do you

  1863. seek the

  1864. living among

  1865. the dead?

  1866. Jesus'

  1867. death was

  1868. victorious.

  1869. It's the

  1870. pivotal point

  1871. in the

  1872. history of

  1873. God's

  1874. redemption.

  1875. He raised

  1876. his son from

  1877. the dead.

  1878. In this act

  1879. of resurrection,

  1880. satisfaction has

  1881. been rendered

  1882. and the

  1883. father's

  1884. declaration is

  1885. clear.

  1886. In Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1887. chapter 2,

  1888. as Peter

  1889. preached to

  1890. those around

  1891. him, he

  1892. said God

  1893. raised him

  1894. up, loosing

  1895. the pangs

  1896. of death

  1897. because it

  1898. was not

  1899. possible for

  1900. him to be

  1901. held by

  1902. it.

  1903. This Jesus

  1904. God raised

  1905. up and

  1906. of that

  1907. we are

  1908. witnesses.

  1909. It's good

  1910. to remember

  1911. today that

  1912. we too,

  1913. like the

  1914. apostles on

  1915. the day of

  1916. Pentecost,

  1917. in our way,

  1918. right here,

  1919. right now,

  1920. at this

  1921. moment,

  1922. are witnesses

  1923. to the

  1924. truth of

  1925. this message

  1926. having taken

  1927. root in

  1928. our hearts

  1929. and lives.

  1930. And so we

  1931. acknowledge that

  1932. Christ is our

  1933. Lord and

  1934. Savior.

  1935. We take our

  1936. place at

  1937. his table,

  1938. not because

  1939. we're perfect

  1940. and wonderful,

  1941. great and

  1942. without problems.

  1943. We take our

  1944. place at his

  1945. table in

  1946. faith,

  1947. looking unto

  1948. him, the

  1949. author and

  1950. finisher of

  1951. our faith.

  1952. We take our

  1953. place at his

  1954. table because

  1955. we're sinners

  1956. in need of

  1957. forgiveness.

  1958. forgiveness.

  1959. And we have

  1960. found that

  1961. forgiveness not

  1962. in our own

  1963. strength and

  1964. in our own

  1965. works, not

  1966. because of the

  1967. righteousness that

  1968. we have acted

  1969. and therefore

  1970. earned God's

  1971. grace, no,

  1972. because God's

  1973. grace is poured

  1974. out in our

  1975. hearts.

  1976. And we have

  1977. come to know

  1978. Jesus Christ as

  1979. our Lord and

  1980. as our Savior.

  1981. Paul would

  1982. later write to

  1983. the church in

  1984. Rome, and in

  1985. chapter 5 and

  1986. verse 1 he

  1987. puts it this

  1988. way,

  1989. therefore, since

  1990. we have been

  1991. justified by

  1992. faith, we

  1993. have peace with

  1994. God through

  1995. our Lord Jesus

  1996. Christ.

  1997. And so this

  1998. morning we

  1999. pause, we

  2000. reflect, we

  2001. remember, do

  2002. this in

  2003. remembrance of

  2004. me.

  2005. We remember

  2006. that the best

  2007. news the world

  2008. has ever heard

  2009. God comes

  2010. from a

  2011. graveyard.

  2012. Our faith

  2013. today is fixed

  2014. in a living

  2015. Jesus, one who

  2016. did die on

  2017. that cross and

  2018. one who was

  2019. physically buried,

  2020. but he has been

  2021. raised from the

  2022. dead and he is

  2023. Lord.

  2024. And we profess

  2025. our faith in

  2026. him, we

  2027. acknowledge that

  2028. we love him,

  2029. we trust him,

  2030. and we will

  2031. follow him, for

  2032. he gave his

  2033. all for us and

  2034. now says to

  2035. each one of us,

  2036. follow me,

  2037. follow me.

  2038. And the

  2039. wondrous thing

  2040. is that Christ

  2041. doesn't then

  2042. disappear over

  2043. the horizon into

  2044. the distance.

  2045. He says, lo, I

  2046. am with you

  2047. always to the

  2048. very end of

  2049. the age.

  2050. And so we

  2051. remember a dead

  2052. saviour can save

  2053. no one but a

  2054. living, personal,

  2055. reigning saviour.

  2056. That changes

  2057. everything.

  2058. And that's why

  2059. the language in

  2060. this section, it

  2061. goes, Christ

  2062. died, he was

  2063. buried, he rose

  2064. again.

  2065. He was seen.

  2066. And the

  2067. Christian church

  2068. for these 2,000

  2069. years has been

  2070. proclaiming this

  2071. wondrous message,

  2072. this good news

  2073. that has been

  2074. passed on to us

  2075. and we focus in

  2076. on what has been

  2077. given of first

  2078. importance, that

  2079. Christ died for

  2080. our sins in

  2081. accordance with

  2082. the scriptures.

  2083. The only

  2084. explanation for

  2085. the cross, the

  2086. only explanation

  2087. that holds water,

  2088. that makes sense,

  2089. that joins up,

  2090. is the seriousness

  2091. of sin, the

  2092. awfulness of sin.

  2093. And that sin had

  2094. created a barrier

  2095. between us and

  2096. God that was

  2097. impassable.

  2098. We couldn't get

  2099. round it, through

  2100. it, over it, or

  2101. under it.

  2102. And that left us

  2103. lost, lost, and

  2104. far off from God.

  2105. I wonder if you've

  2106. noticed how Paul

  2107. opens his letter

  2108. to the Romans,

  2109. that incredible

  2110. letter that goes

  2111. on to deal with

  2112. many of the deep

  2113. things of God.

  2114. But notice the

  2115. first sentence in

  2116. this incredible

  2117. letter.

  2118. Paul, a servant

  2119. of Christ Jesus,

  2120. called to be an

  2121. apostle, set

  2122. apart for the

  2123. gospel of God,

  2124. which he promised

  2125. beforehand through

  2126. his prophets in the

  2127. holy scriptures

  2128. concerning his

  2129. son who was

  2130. descended from

  2131. David according to

  2132. the flesh, and

  2133. was declared to be

  2134. the son of God

  2135. in power according

  2136. to the spirit of

  2137. holiness by his

  2138. resurrection from

  2139. the dead.

  2140. Jesus Christ, our

  2141. Lord, through whom

  2142. we have received

  2143. grace.

  2144. That wonderful

  2145. phrasing there,

  2146. set apart in

  2147. verse 1, set

  2148. apart for the

  2149. gospel of God.

  2150. It's a word that

  2151. speaks of being

  2152. marked out by a

  2153. boundary.

  2154. Isn't that

  2155. wonderful?

  2156. That today,

  2157. Christian friend,

  2158. God has set a

  2159. boundary.

  2160. And that boundary

  2161. marker has one

  2162. word,

  2163. redeemed.

  2164. Redeemed.

  2165. And you have

  2166. been set apart

  2167. for the gospel of

  2168. God.

  2169. Redeemed.

  2170. And it's as

  2171. redeemed we

  2172. gather at this

  2173. table.

  2174. It's as

  2175. redeemed that

  2176. we reflect on

  2177. how we came to

  2178. be on God's

  2179. side of the

  2180. boundary marker.

  2181. How it is we

  2182. came to be

  2183. marked out as

  2184. redeemed by

  2185. putting our

  2186. trust in Christ.

  2187. And that

  2188. alone, nothing

  2189. else.

  2190. There's no

  2191. other way but

  2192. to trust and

  2193. obey.

  2194. And so Paul

  2195. zeroes in here.

  2196. And he reminds

  2197. us that the

  2198. death of Jesus

  2199. is victorious and

  2200. that victory has

  2201. resulted in God

  2202. setting a

  2203. marker, a

  2204. boundary around

  2205. you, Christian

  2206. friend, that is

  2207. marked out as

  2208. redeemed.

  2209. And so we

  2210. look in

  2211. anticipation to

  2212. this supper to

  2213. receive more

  2214. grace in a

  2215. special, effective

  2216. way, remembering

  2217. that the cost of

  2218. that boundary

  2219. marker being

  2220. placed upon us

  2221. and around us

  2222. was nothing

  2223. other than the

  2224. death of Jesus,

  2225. the Son of God.

  2226. And this is the

  2227. last thing.

  2228. The death of

  2229. Jesus is

  2230. saving.

  2231. Our Savior who

  2232. was dead and

  2233. now is alive

  2234. through each one

  2235. of us today

  2236. says that we

  2237. are to proclaim

  2238. his death till

  2239. he come.

  2240. How do we do

  2241. that?

  2242. We take our

  2243. place at the

  2244. table.

  2245. We share

  2246. together the

  2247. bread and the

  2248. wine and we

  2249. look up.

  2250. And as we

  2251. look up, we

  2252. look out.

  2253. We look away

  2254. from our sins.

  2255. We look away

  2256. from the

  2257. struggles.

  2258. We look away

  2259. from the faults

  2260. and the failings

  2261. and we look away

  2262. from the sin that

  2263. so often entangles

  2264. us and trips

  2265. us up.

  2266. We cry out for

  2267. mercy and grace

  2268. to help us in

  2269. time of need.

  2270. And we cry out

  2271. for God's

  2272. strengthening.

  2273. And we remember

  2274. that the victory

  2275. is ours through

  2276. Jesus Christ who

  2277. gave himself for

  2278. us.

  2279. And we press

  2280. on.

  2281. We press on.

  2282. We cannot say

  2283. today that God

  2284. forgives us because

  2285. he is some kind

  2286. of light force

  2287. of love,

  2288. some kind of

  2289. blur in the

  2290. sky.

  2291. So many people

  2292. today, if they

  2293. even get close to

  2294. thinking about

  2295. God, that's about

  2296. as far as they

  2297. get.

  2298. They never open

  2299. his word.

  2300. But what do

  2301. they read?

  2302. They read you

  2303. and I.

  2304. They read our

  2305. lives.

  2306. They see us.

  2307. And so may it

  2308. be that as we

  2309. conduct ourselves,

  2310. this message

  2311. would shine

  2312. through.

  2313. That the light

  2314. of Christ would

  2315. be seen in how

  2316. we conduct

  2317. ourselves.

  2318. As he said

  2319. this morning to

  2320. the children,

  2321. in the choices

  2322. we make,

  2323. in the decisions

  2324. that form us,

  2325. in what we do

  2326. on Monday and

  2327. Tuesday and

  2328. Thursday and

  2329. each day in

  2330. work, private,

  2331. the family and

  2332. the community,

  2333. over the fence

  2334. with the

  2335. neighbours,

  2336. when we're at

  2337. home with our

  2338. children.

  2339. May it be that

  2340. it would be

  2341. evident that we

  2342. love the Lord

  2343. and that his

  2344. mark of

  2345. redeemed is

  2346. upon us.

  2347. Not to make us

  2348. special, not to

  2349. lord it over

  2350. anyone.

  2351. Of course not.

  2352. It's the opposite,

  2353. isn't it?

  2354. We're so aware

  2355. of sin.

  2356. We're so keenly

  2357. aware of sin.

  2358. That's what the

  2359. tender conscience

  2360. does.

  2361. It makes us so

  2362. awake to sin and

  2363. aware of sin that

  2364. we wouldn't dare

  2365. lord it over

  2366. anybody.

  2367. We are saved by

  2368. grace and through

  2369. faith and not of

  2370. ourselves.

2371. It is the gift of

  2372. God.

  2373. Let's any of us

  2374. should boast.

  2375. There's no room

  2376. for pride in the

  2377. kingdom of heaven.

  2378. No room for pride

  2379. in the church of

  2380. Christ.

  2381. There's only room

  2382. for humility and

  2383. dependence.

  2384. sins because

  2385. were it not for

  2386. Jesus, every

  2387. single one of us

  2388. would still be

  2389. under the wrath

  2390. of God.

  2391. And so we give

  2392. thanks today that

  2393. this message of

  2394. hope and this

  2395. message of faith,

  2396. this message of

  2397. life revolves

  2398. around the

  2399. central event of

  2400. the death of

  2401. Christ.

  2402. He tasted its

  2403. awfulness and

  2404. disarmed it.

  2405. He felt its

  2406. sting and

  2407. defeated it for

  2408. us.

  2409. So our song in

  2410. our hearts is

  2411. hallelujah what a

  2412. savior.

  2413. He is risen from

  2414. the dead, he is

  2415. Lord.

  2416. He died that we

  2417. might be forgiven.

  2418. He died to make

  2419. us good that we

  2420. might go at last

  2421. to heaven, saved

  2422. by his precious

  2423. blood.

  2424. This is our king

  2425. and lord and

  2426. savior that we

  2427. now remember

  2428. together.

  2429. This is our king

  2430. and lord and

  2431. savior who bids us

  2432. come.

  2433. This is our king

  2434. and lord and

  2435. savior who says

  2436. of his table and

  2437. his supper, all

  2438. things are now

  2439. ready.

  2440. Do this in

  2441. remembrance of

  2442. me.

  2443. Let's pray together

  2444. for a moment.

  2445. our gracious lord, how

2446. can we take in the

  2447. scene of the

  2448. cross?

2449. How can we take in

  2450. the scene of an

  2451. empty tomb?

2452. How can we take in

  2453. the meaning and

  2454. significance of

  2455. Golgotha?

  2456. And yet, lord, we

  2457. bless you for the

  2458. garden.

  2459. We bless you that

  2460. there in the

  2461. graveyard there was

  2462. no body to

  2463. anoint.

  2464. There was only an

  2465. angelic guard set on

  2466. the tomb to tell

  2467. those early

  2468. followers, why do

  2469. you seek the living

  2470. among the dead?

2471. For he has risen, as

2472. he said, come see the

  2473. place where he lay.

  2474. Lord, our God, we

2475. bless you that at the

  2476. center of the

  2477. Christian message

  2478. today is the message

  2479. of a savior who

  2480. loved us and gave

  2481. himself for us even

2482. to death on a cross.

2483. How can we begin to

  2484. comprehend in our

  2485. lifetime the

  2486. significance and

  2487. wondrous depth of

  2488. that message?

  2489. And so, lord, in

  2490. faith, we gather

  2491. today, we follow the

  2492. instruction of our

  2493. lord in simple

  2494. obedience, reverently

  2495. and humbly.

2496. And we come to this

  2497. table to be fed.

  2498. We come to be

  2499. nourished.

  2500. We come to be

  2501. enlivened.

  2502. We come for grace.

2503. So be with us, we

  2504. pray.

  2505. In his precious

  2506. name.

  2507. Amen.

  2508. Now, before we share

  2509. together in the

  2510. Lord's Supper, we'll

  2511. sing again to God's

  2512. praise.

  2513. We'll turn to Psalm

  2514. 118 in the Psalter.

  2515. Psalm 118 in the

  2516. Psalter, page 398.

  2517. And we'll sing from

  2518. verse 15.

  2519. And we'll sing to

  2520. verse 21, to God's

  2521. praise, to the

  2522. tuned coal sill.

  2523. Psalm 118, singing

  2524. from verse 15.

  2525. If anyone is still

  2526. in the church

  2527. present who loves

  2528. the Lord Jesus

2529. Christ and who is in

  2530. full communion with

  2531. their own church and

  2532. is perhaps visiting or

  2533. otherwise detained,

  2534. so come into the

  2535. table and invite you

2536. to take your place at

2537. the Lord's table as we

  2538. sing these verses.

2539. This is the table of

  2540. the Lord Jesus Christ.

2541. It is not the table of

  2542. the free church.

  2543. And so you're welcome

  2544. in our Saviour's name

  2545. to join us.

  2546. We'll sing then from

  2547. verse 15 to verse

  2548. 21.

  2549. And dwellings of the

  2550. righteous has heard

2551. the melody of joy and

  2552. health.

  2553. The Lord's right hand

  2554. doth ever valiantly.

  2555. These verses to God's

  2556. praise.

  2557. of joy and health.

  2558. The Lord's right hand

  2559. doth ever valiantly.

2560. Of joy and hell the Lord's right hand doth ever valiantly.

2561. The right hand of the mighty Lord exalted is on high.

2562. The right hand of the mighty Lord doth ever valiantly.

2563. I shall not die but live and shall the works of God discover.

2564. The Lord doth me just, I said so, but not to death give no heart.

2565. O set ye open unto me the gates of righteousness.

2566. Then will I enter into them, and I the Lord will bless.

2567. This is the gate of God by it, that thou shalt enter in.

2568. Thee will I please for thy leaders, and as my safety be.

  2569. Amen.

2570. We gather at the Lord's table to share in his supper.

2571. This opportunity that he provides to his church to receive his grace in this special way.

2572. To remember his death till he come again.

2573. We read from 1 Corinthians 11, words that we refer to as our warrant for why we do what we do here.

2574. In verse 23, I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you.

2575. The Lord Jesus in the night when he was betrayed took bread.

2576. And when he had given thanks, he broke it and said,

2577. This is my body which is for you.

2578. Do this in remembrance of me.

2579. In the same way also he took the cup after supper, saying,

2580. This cup is the new covenant in my blood.

2581. Do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me.

2582. For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup,

2583. you proclaim the Lord's death until he come.

2584. And so we proclaim his death.

2585. We proclaim that he was dead and now is alive.

2586. We proclaim he is our hope, our joy, our peace,

2587. as we share together in this supper.

2588. Let us first of all pray together.

2589. O Lord, we come in anticipation to your table.

2590. We come to be fed, to be nourished, to be blessed, to receive grace.

2591. And so we pray, Lord God, that through this bread and this wine,

2592. set apart in your ordinance,

2593. and by your providence and by your providence and in your mercy,

2594. that they would be to us a feast.

2595. They would be to us this day a banquet.

2596. They would be to us nourishment to our souls,

2597. that we be replenished and refreshed and revived in our spirit

2598. by sharing together in this supper.

2599. As we take the bread and as we take the wine,

2600. as we share together at this table, at this meal,

2601. we ask, Lord, for a sense of worship and wonder,

2602. a sense of oneness and purpose,

2603. a sense of drive and a sense of determination,

2604. as we in your grace and mercy are enabled here

2605. to proclaim our Lord's death till they come again.

2606. Here as we pray in his name.

  2607. Amen.

2608. Before I serve these elements,

2609. let me just share with you these words

2610. written by Gregory of Nazianzus,

2611. a fourth century church leader

2612. who wrote magnificently on who Jesus is

2613. and what Jesus has done.

2614. He began his ministry by being hungry,

2615. yet is the bread of life.

2616. He ended his ministry by being thirsty,

2617. yet is the living water.

2618. He was weary, yet is our rest.

2619. He paid tribute, yet is the king.

2620. He was accused of being a demon,

  2621. yet cast out demons.

2622. Jesus wept, yet he wipes away our tears.

2623. Jesus was sold for 30 pieces of silver,

2624. yet he redeemed the world.

2625. Jesus was brought as a lamb to the slaughter,

2626. yet he is the good shepherd.

2627. Jesus died, yet by his death,

2628. he destroyed the power of death.

2629. This is my body which is for you.

2630. Do this in remembrance of me.

2631. The initiative in our redemption

2632. comes from God the Father.

2633. For that we give thanks and we praise him.

2634. He's given me long enough to speak to you today,

2635. so I just want to read the last verse

2636. in the chapter we were thinking about this morning,

  2637. 1 Corinthians 15 and verse 58.

2638. Where in light of what we've thought about,

2639. in light of the grace we've received,

2640. at this table we hear these words,

2641. therefore, my beloved brothers and sisters,

  2642. be steadfast, immovable,

2643. always abounding in the work of the Lord,

2644. knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

  2645. May he bless us,

2646. as together we serve him

2647. and share something of the unsearchable riches of Christ

2648. with the people around us,

2649. professing to them that he is our Savior,

2650. our Lord, our King, and our Friend,

2651. and that through faith he can be that to everyone

  2652. who comes to him.

2653. We're going to close our service this morning

2654. by turning to the Psalter

2655. and singing from Psalm 72,

2656. words of adoration and proclamation,

2657. words of praise and wonder.

2658. His name forever shall endure,

2659. last like the sun it shall,

2660. men shall be blessed in him,

2661. and blessed all nations shall him call.

2662. Psalm 72, we'll sing to the end,

2663. and if you give me a moment to get to the front door,

2664. please, at the end of the service,

  2665. that would be appreciated.

2666. Psalm 72 from verse 17 to the end.

2667. His name forever shall endure,

2668. last like the sun it shall,

2669. men shall be blessed in him,

2670. and blessed all nations shall them call.

2671. Now blessed be the Lord our God,

  2672. the God of Israel,

2673. for he alone doth wondrous works

  2674. in glory that excel.

2675. And blessed be his glorious name,

  2676. to all eternity.

2677. the whole earth let his glory fill.

2678. Amen, so let it be.

  2679. Amen.

  2680. Amen.

  2681. Amen.

  2682. Amen.

  2683. Amen.

  2684. Amen.

  2685. Amen.

  2686. Amen.

  2687. Amen.

  2688. Amen.

  2689. Amen.
