  1. Thank you, James. It's a privilege and a joy to be with you once more this evening to worship

  2. together the living God. Let me read to you just these few words from his word before we sing

  3. praise together to his name. Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth. Let

  4. us worship him together, singing to his praise from Psalm 96a. Psalm 96a and sing Psalms, page 126

  5. in our Blue Psalm books, page 126. Singing Psalm 96a from the beginning, we'll sing to verse 9.

  6. Sing a new song to the Lord. Sing praises to his name and his salvation day by day that all the

  10. sing a new song to the Lord. Let his salvation day by day that all the earth proclaim. Let glory and his mighty deeds to every day of the earth.

  11. to every land declare. To every land declare. How great and awesome is the Lord. With him no gods compare.

  12. All other gods are good and stone. The Lord may tell us high. All power and majesty are missed.

  13. All nations do. The Lord has guide. The glory that is due.

  14. All nations do. The Lord has guide. The glory that is due.

  15. All nations do. The Lord has guide. The glory that is due.

  16. All nations do. The Lord has guide. The glory that is due.

  17. All nations do. The Lord has guide. The glory that is due.

  18. The glory that is due. The glory that is due.

  19. Holy that is true.

  20. Glory and strength, and strength to God, and praise his name anew.

  21. And turn his course with joy and ring, and offer him with you.

  22. Worship the Lord in holy fear, all earth before him.

  23. Let us join in prayer together. Let us pray.

  24. Worship the Lord in holy fear, let all the earth before him bow.

  25. Lord our gracious God, this evening from the outset of our time together,

  26. we would acknowledge your greatness, your majesty, your holiness.

  27. We acknowledge that you are altogether other, that you are our creator, sustainer, sovereign ruler,

  28. majestic and glorious in power and strength and wisdom and might.

  29. Lord, we humble ourselves before you this night.

  30. And we know that that is the spirit and attitude and mindset of worship,

  31. to bow before you, our creator, and to say in our hearts and to acknowledge in our songs,

  32. the Lord, he is God, the Lord, he is God.

  33. And so we pray that you would, Lord, look upon us in favour this evening.

  34. That you would open your word to our hearts,

  35. and in your spirit open our hearts to your word.

  36. That we would again acknowledge and study and reflect on the good news of Jesus Christ.

  37. This gospel of grace, this declaration that in him, your son,

  38. there is forgiveness and freedom, there is life and immortality,

  39. and it is ours through Jesus.

  40. For we know that the wages of sin is death,

  41. but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus, our Lord.

  42. And so we come, Lord, before you,

  43. and we humbly seek your presence and seek your face through Jesus.

  44. It is all of him.

  45. He is our hope, our joy, he is our surety,

  46. he is our mediator, our intercessor,

  47. our redeemer, our saviour,

  48. Lord, King and Friend.

  49. He is Lord of Lords, Lord of all.

  50. And so we would acknowledge tonight the good news of Jesus.

  51. He would lift up his name on high.

  52. And we give thanks tonight that we know his name.

  53. And we have come to know that by day and by night he is with and before and around his people.

  54. For the Lord has said he will build his church,

  55. and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.

  56. And so we tonight, Lord, would ask for your grace and strength

  57. to don the armour of God as we are called to do,

  58. to face the weak to come prepared fully in heart and mind and soul.

  59. By worshipping you aright this evening, Lord,

  60. we put you at the beginning of this week.

  61. And we ask in so doing that you would be honoured

  62. and that you would be pleased to dwell among us, Lord,

  63. and bless us with your grace.

  64. That we would be strengthened with your might in our inner beings,

  65. ready and fit and willing to run the race that is set before us,

  66. looking unto Jesus, the author and completer of our faith,

  67. who for the joy set before him despised the shame.

  68. Oh, Lord, our God, we think of the race set before us

  69. because of the cross set before him.

  70. And we ask tonight that we would maintain a sense of perspective

  71. as we go through life and as we run our course.

  72. At times, Lord, we are imbalanced,

  73. we get selfish, we get impatient,

  74. we become demanding before you.

  75. Forgive us, Lord, for these times when we get things so badly wrong,

  76. when we forget our place,

  77. when we forget that you are almighty God,

  78. glorious in power and wondrous in might,

  79. amazing in grace.

  80. Lord, at times we lift up our prayers to you

  81. in a spirit that is less than satisfactory,

  82. in a spirit that is perhaps demanding,

  83. in a spirit of seeking after ourselves.

  84. Forgive us.

  85. And Lord, lead us to seek your ways

  86. and to know your paths.

  87. Give us that teachableness of heart

  88. that we would say, here am I, Lord, send me.

  89. And may we go into the week ahead conscious

  90. that you have set us here

  91. as signposts and missionaries,

  92. each and every one of us,

  93. missionaries in our districts and across our island.

  94. And we thank and praise you, Lord,

  95. that there are so many of your people

  96. who are so called to be missionaries

  97. here on our own island,

  98. in our own districts.

  99. And so we pray tonight

  100. that as the word is preached here

  101. and across our island,

  102. that your people would be encouraged

  103. and nourished and built up,

  104. that we would be stimulated

  105. to go into the week ahead

  106. and to make Jesus known.

  107. Sometimes, Lord, this is difficult to do.

  108. Sometimes we are uncertain

  109. of how to share our testimony,

  110. how to share our faith.

  111. Lord, give us grace and insight,

  112. understanding, wisdom, patience,

  113. tenacity and courage,

  114. for we need all of these things

  115. to make Jesus known.

  116. And so we would seek to share

  117. the good news of Jesus Christ,

  118. the gospel of grace with those around us

  119. and beside us,

  120. in our homes, in our communities.

  121. And we pray, Lord,

  122. that as that witness unfolds this week,

  123. that you be pleased to bless

  124. the labors of your people,

  125. for it is not in vain

  126. that we labor in the Lord.

  127. We look to you, Lord, and pray

  128. that the gospel would flourish,

  129. that it would take root in hearts and lives,

  130. that men and women,

  131. and boys and girls,

  132. would be held and constrained

  133. in their awareness

  134. of their need of salvation

  135. and see in Christ the Savior.

  136. For it is through him,

  137. through this man,

  138. that is preached the forgiveness of sins.

  139. This is the message of salvation

  140. that the Christian church

  141. has declared loud

  142. and declared strong and clear

  143. down through the generations.

  144. May we continue to do so

  145. as we build on the labors

  146. of those who have gone before us.

  147. May we continue to be faithful

  148. to the task.

  149. May we be good soldiers

  150. of Christ Jesus.

  151. May we endure hardship

  152. as at times we must.

  153. And may we look unto the one

  154. who has called us to run our race,

  155. sharing the message

  156. of forgiveness in him

  157. to all around.

  158. We pray then, Lord,

  159. for your work here in Stornoway.

  160. We pray for James and Donna,

  161. for Calamurdo and Joanne

  162. and their families.

  163. We pray, Lord,

  164. that you would uphold them

  165. and keep them in their ministry

  166. here in the town.

  167. That you be with the elders

  168. and deacons

  169. and all those involved

  170. in Sunday school

  171. and creche

  172. and mother and toddler

  173. and all the activities

  174. that are ongoing,

  175. the work that so many

  176. put their hand to

  177. here in the congregation

  178. in Stornoway.

  179. And may it continue

  180. to be an encouragement

  181. to all of us

  182. that we too, Lord,

  183. would follow this example

  184. and work as hard as we can

  185. where you have placed us

  186. to your glory

  187. and to the furtherance

  188. of the gospel.

  189. We long for the day

  190. when we will see

  191. men and women

  192. and homes and families

  193. transformed by grace.

  194. So, Lord,

  195. we pray for conversions tonight.

  196. We seek conversions

  197. through the preaching

  198. of the word.

  199. We ask that many

  200. in our districts

  201. would be brought

  202. under conviction of sin

  203. and there in Christ

  204. to find relief

  205. and peace and joy

  206. for in him

  207. there is forgiveness.

  208. In him

  209. there is plenteous redemption.

  210. Lord,

  211. we ask for your blessing

  212. across our island

  213. and nation.

  214. We pray that you

  215. would raise up leaders

  216. who would be unashamed

  217. of the testimony

  218. of the gospel,

  219. unashamed of naming

  220. Jesus as Savior.

  221. We long for leaders

  222. who in the public square

  223. would reflect

  224. a love for Jesus

  225. and would have at heart

  226. an honouring of his word

  227. that they would be

  228. clearly people of prayer,

  229. people of faith,

  230. people who would

  231. set an example

  232. that they, Lord,

  233. would lead us

  234. by themselves

  235. being led by you.

  236. We long for this,

  237. for an upturn

  238. in our nation's spirituality,

  239. for an outpouring

  240. of the Spirit

  241. to an extent

  242. that we could not

  243. contain it

  244. or even begin

  245. to imagine it,

  246. but that many

  247. in our land

  248. would come to know

  249. Christ Jesus

  250. for themselves.

  251. We pray, Lord,

  252. that you'd remember us

  253. this time as a nation

  254. as we pray

  255. for our parliament,

  256. our leaders,

  257. our politicians.

  258. We remember

  259. our armed forces.

  260. We pray for the

  261. emergency services

  262. and the National

  263. Health Service staff,

  264. those who look after us

  265. and do so much

  266. on our behalf

  267. to keep us safe

  268. and to look after

  269. those who are ill

  270. and those who are housebound.

  271. We remember carers

  272. who are under

  273. particular pressure

  274. and stress

  275. at this time.

  276. And we ask, Lord,

  277. that you would watch

  278. over them

  279. and bless them

  280. in the wonderful work

  281. they do across

  282. our communities

  283. in helping those

  284. who are housebound

  285. and unable

  286. to leave homes

  287. and unable

  288. to join us

  289. in worship,

  290. unable to spend

  291. time with family,

  292. unable to do so much

  293. because of ill.

  294. Lord,

  295. we pray tonight

  296. for those bereaved.

  297. We pray for those,

  298. Lord,

  299. who have known

  300. sadness and loss

  301. in their lives

  302. and continue to feel

  303. that the weight

  304. of that loss.

  305. We near them,

  306. Lord,

  307. and grant them

  308. that peace

  309. that passes understanding.

  310. Be with them

  311. in your grace

  312. and in your mercy,

  313. we pray.

  314. And so, Lord,

  315. we ask tonight

  316. that you would open

  317. your word to us,

  318. that we would hear

  319. something of the wonder

  320. and splendor

  321. and scope

  322. of the gospel.

  323. And all these things

  324. we ask

  325. through Jesus Christ,

  326. our Lord and Savior.

  327. Amen.

  328. We'll turn again

  329. to sing to God's praise.

  330. Sing Psalms

  331. in Psalm 65.

  332. Psalm 65,

  333. singing from verse 8.

  334. That's page 82

  335. in our blue psalm books.

  336. Page 82.

  337. Psalm 65,

  338. singing from verse 8.

  339. Those who inhabit

  340. distant lands

  341. with all regard

  342. your ways,

  343. where morning dawns

  344. and evening fades,

  345. you call forth

  346. songs of praise.

  347. You tend the land

  348. and water it,

  349. you make it rich

  350. and good,

  351. as you ordain

  352. your streams are full

  353. to give the people food.

  354. Psalm 65,

  355. we'll sing from verse 8

  356. to 13

  357. to God's praise.

  358. Amen.

  359. Psalm 66,

  360. singing from verse 9.

  361. When morning dawns

  362. and evening fades,

  363. you call for songs of praise.

  364. When morning dawns

  365. and evening fades,

  366. you call for songs of praise.

  367. to take the land

  368. and water it,

  369. you make it rich and good.

  370. As you ordain,

  371. your streams are full

  372. to give the people food.

  373. the grace of the earth

  374. of the land,

  375. you heaven off the ground,

  376. you soften it

  377. with showers of rain

  378. and make its crops

  379. above.

  380. You end the year

  381. with truthfulness,

  382. your harvest overflow,

  383. the grass that flourishes again,

  384. the hills with madness glow.

  385. The birds to stream

  386. with thoughts are cold,

  387. the meadows covering.

  388. Above, he's there

  389. themselves with corn,

  390. they shout for joy and sing.

  391. A song of gratitude

  392. and thankfulness

  393. for God's provision toward us,

  394. his grace poured out

  395. in that psalm.

  396. We'll read together

  397. from his word,

  398. first of all,

  399. from the Old Testament

  400. and the prophecy of Isaiah,

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  401. chapter 40.

  402. Isaiah and chapter 40,

  403. we'll read from verse 18,

  404. and then we'll turn forward

  405. in our Bibles to the Gospel of John

  406. and chapter 3.

  407. Reading first of all,

  408. then, from Isaiah

  409. and chapter 40,

  410. and verse 18.

  411. A section that is all about

  412. the greatness of God.

  413. To whom, then,

  414. will you liken God?

  415. Or what likeness compare with him?

  416. An idol?

  417. A craftsman casts it,

  418. and a goldsmith overlays it with gold

  419. and casts for it silver chains.

  420. He who is too impoverished

  421. for an offering

  422. chooses wood

  423. that will not rot.

  424. He seeks out a skillful craftsman

  425. to set up an idol

  426. that will not move.

  427. Do you not know?

  428. Do you not hear?

  429. Has it not been told you

  430. from the beginning?

  431. Have you not understood

  432. from the foundations of the earth?

  433. It is he who sits above

  434. the circle of the earth,

  435. and its inhabitants

  436. are like grasshoppers,

  437. who stretches out the heavens

  438. like a curtain

  439. and spreads them

  440. like a tent to dwell in,

  441. who brings princes to nothing

  442. and makes the rulers

  443. of the earth as emptiness.

  444. Scarcely are they planted,

  445. scarcely sown,

  446. scarcely has their stem

  447. taken root in the earth

  448. when he blows in them

  449. and they wither

  450. and the tempest

  451. carries them off like stubble.

  452. To whom, then,

  453. will you like compare me?

  454. That I should be like him,

  455. says the Holy One.

  456. Lift up your eyes on high

  457. and see who created these.

  458. He who brings out

  459. their host by number,

  460. calling them all by name,

  461. by the greatness of his might,

  462. and because he is strong in power,

  463. not one is missing.

  464. Why do you say,

  465. O Jacob,

  466. and speak, O Israel,

  467. my way is hidden from the Lord,

  468. and my right is disregarded

  469. by my God?

  470. Have you not known?

  471. Have you not heard?

  472. The Lord is the everlasting God,

  473. the creator of the ends

  474. of the earth.

  475. He does not faint

  476. or grow weary.

  477. His understanding

  478. is unsearchable.

  479. He gives power

  480. to the faint

  481. and to him

  482. who has no mighty

  483. increases strength.

  484. Even youth shall faint

  485. and be weary

  486. and young men

  487. shall fall exhausted,

  488. but they who wait

  489. on the Lord

  490. shall renew their strength.

  491. They shall mount up

  492. with wings like eagles.

  493. They shall run

  494. and not be weary.

  495. They shall walk

  496. and not faint.

  497. And turning forward

  498. to the Gospel of John,

  499. reading from chapter 3,

  500. the Gospel of John

  501. and chapter 3.

  502. We'll read the most famous of words

  503. in this chapter

  504. from verse 16.

  505. For God so loved the world

  506. that he gave his only Son

  507. that whoever believes in him

  508. should not perish

  509. but have eternal life.

  510. For God did not send his Son

  511. into the world

  512. to condemn the world,

  513. but in order that the world

  514. might be saved through him.

  515. Whoever believes in him

  516. is not condemned,

  517. but whoever does not believe

  518. is condemned already

  519. because he has not believed

  520. in the name

  521. of the only Son of God.

  522. And this is the judgment.

  523. The light has come

  524. into the world

  525. and people loved the darkness

  526. rather than the light

  527. because their deeds were evil.

  528. But everyone who does wicked things

  529. hates the light

  530. and does not come to the light

  531. lest his deeds should be exposed.

  532. But whoever does what is true

  533. comes to the light

  534. so that it may be clearly seen

  535. that his deeds

  536. have been carried out

  537. in God.

  538. Amen.

  539. And may the Lord bless

  540. the reading of his word

  541. to his own name.

  542. We'll sing again to God's praise

  543. before considering together

  544. this evening these words.

  545. And we'll sing from the Psalter,

  546. Psalm 130.

  547. Psalm 130.

  548. A song of redemption.

  549. A song of provision

  550. that is found in the Lord.

  551. Psalm 130.

  552. Page 421

  553. in our blue Psalm books.

  554. Lord, from the depths

  555. to thee I cried.

  556. My voice, Lord,

  557. do thou hear

  558. unto my supplications voice.

  559. Give an attentive ear.

  560. Lord, who shall stand

  561. if thou, O Lord,

  562. shouldst mark iniquity?

  563. But yet with thee

  564. forgiveness is

  565. that feared

  566. thou mayest be.

  567. We'll sing the whole Psalm

  568. to God's praise.

  569. Lord, from the dead to thee I cry, my voice for to the hear.

  570. Come to my supplications, Lord, in an attempted ear.

  571. Lord, who shall stand in thine, O Lord, to spark in liberty?

  572. But yet with thee forgiveness is the fear, the vainest being.

  573. I wait for God, my soul doth wait, My hope is in His word.

  574. For love, yea, love, for morning watch, My soul waits for the Lord.

  575. On same or now, they have to watch, The morning light to see.

  576. Let Israel open the Lord, For with Him mercy's thee.

  577. On grandiacal redemption, His name were found within,

  578. And from all His iniquities, He Israel shall redeem.

  579. Let us pray together for a moment.

  580. Lord, our dependence upon you is complete, is total.

  581. We seek your face, and by your spirit we ask you would lead us this evening

  582. as we consider your word, this eternal truth contained in scriptures and provided toward us.

  583. What gracious provision.

  584. Lord, we thank you that we meet tonight around the word of God,

  585. and that brings us to the God of the word.

  586. And as we worship and sing and pray and now study the scriptures together,

  587. we ask above all that you be glorified,

  588. and all that is done and said here would be pleasing and acceptable in your sight.

  589. Lord, draw near to us.

  590. And may we heed the Spirit's leading this evening,

  591. and may we respond to your graciousness.

  592. May we respond to the gospel.

  593. And may we go from here knowing it's good to be here.

  594. Bless, Lord, your word to us, we pray.

  595. In Jesus' name, amen.

  596. Amen.

  597. Well, if you would open your Bibles at the gospel of John in chapter 3,

  598. where we read from together already,

  599. you will open your Bible at probably the most famous verse of the whole scripture.

  600. John 3 and verse 16 is the Bible in miniature.

  601. It is the gospel in summary.

  602. And I'd like us to think about it this evening and to learn together what it has to teach us about the gospel,

  603. and above all, what it has to teach us about God.

  604. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,

  605. that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

  606. I wonder sometimes what people who have never been to Scotland actually think of Scotland.

  607. They might be depending on a tourist or a relation or someone who's lived here,

  608. telling them what our country is like.

  609. They might take their impression from the internet, from a travel magazine,

  610. from a postcard, from TV, who knows?

  611. I just wonder sometimes if they envisage pipers and haggis in every corner,

  612. and the low mists and the songs that just float up and down our land.

  613. I wonder if they ever think of the rain and the midges and all that stuff.

  614. And I sometimes think about that because I often wonder, more so,

  615. what people think about God without ever coming to his word.

  616. And I think that's a massive problem in our own time, in our own land, this very evening.

  617. There are vast numbers of people tonight who have a concept of God,

  618. call it a theology of God, perhaps that's pushing things.

  619. They have an idea, a system, a scheme,

  620. whereby they think of God along their terms,

  621. without ever coming to the word he has given us.

  622. And that's something we must be on our guard against.

  623. Friends, this evening, if you have a concept of God,

  624. if you have an imaginary thought about what God is like,

  625. and you have framed your thinking in isolation to the word,

  626. then you need to stop now and come to this text with me this evening

  627. and think about what this tells us about the living God,

  628. the God of the word.

  629. And I would say also right from the off that we shouldn't understand the Bible or approach the Bible

  630. thinking that it's a book that is set before us to convince us about the existence of God.

  631. That is not the Bible's focus and purpose.

  632. The Bible has not been given to us this evening to answer the question,

  633. does God exist?

  634. That question is not addressed by the Bible.

  635. The question the Bible addresses is not,

  636. does God exist?

  637. But what is God like?

  638. And John 3 and verse 16 brings us right to the heart of the matter.

  639. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

  640. It's a very high probability that most of us here know the words off by heart.

  641. So I approach a text like this that's so well known with a level of trepidation

  642. because it's a text that will always feature in any preaching ministry

  643. because it's so deep and wide and beautiful.

  644. There is so much here of God.

  645. There is so much here of the gospel that it would take many, many visits to this text

  646. to begin to just scratch the surface.

  647. But it's good this evening to think about God.

  648. That's why he raised up his church.

  649. The church militant is here to profess faith in Christ

  650. and declare the unsearchable riches of Christ,

  651. to preach the cross.

  652. And we will never exhaust that subject.

  653. We read from Isaiah in chapter 40 and verse 18 begins,

  654. To whom then will you liken God?

  655. Or what likeness compare with him?

  656. And then it says toward the end,

  657. Lift up your highs on high and see.

  658. Who created these things?

  659. He who brings out their host by number,

  660. calling them all by name.

  661. This is God, the God of wonders,

  662. the God of power, almighty God.

  663. Wondrous in power and glorious in might.

  664. And so we come to this answer he has given us.

  665. And we come humbly and carefully to listen to what God has to say to us

  666. in this most famous of texts.

  667. And above all, we seek to form our thinking of God and toward God

  668. based upon his word.

  669. So there are a few things to think of this evening.

  670. I want to think with you first of all, from John 3 and verse 16,

  671. about what God has done.

  672. What God has done.

  673. God is a God of love.

  674. Love flows from him.

  675. It is part of who he is.

  676. It is of his very essence.

  677. And as we read through various passages in the scripture,

  678. we come to see more and more of who God is and what God is like.

  679. John, as he wrote of the love of God,

  680. particularly in his letters.

  681. And if I could just turn very quickly to 1 John in chapter 4,

  682. to consider just a few things there we're told here of the love of God.

  683. In chapter 4 of 1 John and verse 9,

  684. in this the love of God was made manifest among us,

  685. revealed, confirmed, declared,

  686. that God sent his only Son into the world.

  687. There is the declaration and affirmation and confirmation

  688. of the love of God,

  689. so that we might live through him

  690. in his love for us.

  691. He has sent his only Son into the world,

  692. so that we might live through him.

  693. Such is God's love

  694. and its intensity

  695. and its perfection

  696. and its purity.

  697. That God has made provision for sinners

  698. in sending his Son.

  699. And this is love.

  700. Not that we have loved God,

  701. but that he loved us

  702. and sent his Son to be the propitiation

  703. for our sins.

  704. Beloved,

  705. if God so loved us,

  706. we also ought to love

  707. one another.

  708. That's why love must be at the center

  709. of any gospel preaching

  710. and gospel declaration,

  711. because it is of the essence of our God.

  712. And in his love,

  713. he has provided his Son,

  714. for God so loved the world

  715. that he gave.

  716. And that's the key word

  717. in John 3 and verse 16

  718. when it comes to thinking about

  719. what God has done.

  720. We speak of his character,

  721. his nature,

  722. being perfect

  723. and pure

  724. in love.

  725. And we see that in his love,

  726. he acts.

  727. It's not just words with God.

  728. It's actions.

  729. And in his love,

  730. because of his love,

  731. through his love,

  732. he gave.

  733. God gave.

  734. It's wonderful just to pause

  735. and think and reflect

  736. for a few moments about this,

  737. to think of the love

  738. of our God.

  739. His love is limitless.

  740. And this is how one writer

  741. sums it up.

  742. The magnitude of his love

  743. is matched

  744. by the magnitude

  745. of his gift.

  746. The magnitude of his love

  747. is matched

  748. by the magnitude

  749. of his gift.

  750. And when people ask you,

  751. what gift?

  752. What's God ever done for me?

  753. Remind them

  754. that he who did not

  755. spare his own son,

  756. but delivered him up

  757. for us all,

  758. how will he not also

  759. with him graciously

  760. give us all things?

  761. He gave all.

  762. The magnitude of his love

  763. is matched

  764. by the magnitude

  765. of his gift.

  766. How many people

  767. in Stornoway tonight

  768. and across our land

  769. are thinking,

  770. well,

  771. what's God ever done

  772. for me?

  773. What's God ever given me?

  774. Particularly when things

  775. go bad

  776. and when life

  777. takes a downward turn

  778. where there's a period

  779. perhaps of ill health

  780. or bereavement

  781. or financial strain

  782. and pressure,

  783. unemployment,

  784. when relationships

  785. break,

  786. when things get bad,

  787. when brokenness

  788. comes in,

  789. when there's addiction,

  790. people lash out

  791. at God

  792. and blame God

  793. and shake their fist

  794. at God

  795. and will have nothing

  796. to do with God

  797. and if ever he gets

  798. a passing thought

  799. as well,

  800. what's he ever done

  801. for me?

  802. And the tragedy

  803. about that mindset

  804. and that heart condition

  805. is that it goes

  806. straight past

  807. this open declaration

  808. of what God

  809. has already done.

  810. In love,

  811. he's provided

  812. his very own son.

  813. You see,

  814. the gospel's

  815. not a bedtime story.

  816. It's not about

  817. a bunch of rules.

  818. It's not about

  819. a code of conduct

  820. for religiously minded people.

  821. The gospel,

  822. as we've already noted

  823. this weekend,

  824. it's not a message

  825. about religion.

  826. It's a message

  827. of salvation.

  828. For I'm not ashamed

  829. of the gospel

  830. for it is the power

  831. of God to salvation

  832. to all who believe.

  833. It's about salvation

  834. and being saved

  835. and how does it,

  836. how do we get there?

  837. It comes from God.

  838. It pleased God

  839. from all eternity

  840. to ordain

  841. and appoint Jesus

  842. as our mediator.

  843. It's paraphrasing

  844. our own confession

  845. of faith.

  846. For God so loved

  847. the world

  848. that he gave.

  849. He gave his son.

  850. And the gospel tonight

  851. stands upon

  852. this historical

  853. giving of Jesus.

  854. We have to assert

  855. and maintain

  856. and defend

  857. that the one

  858. who from all eternity

  859. was with the Father,

  860. through whom

  861. all things were made

  862. and through,

  863. by whom all things

  864. are sustained,

  865. by whom all things

  866. were created,

  867. as a result of his

  868. being given,

  869. became flesh

  870. and dwelt

  871. among us.

  872. He is the image

  873. of the invisible God,

  874. the firstborn

  875. over all creation.

  876. By him all things

  877. were created

  878. through him

  879. and for him.

  880. In him all the fullness

  881. of God

  882. was pleased to dwell.

  883. How long have we got

  884. to unpack

  885. these words?

  886. A lifetime

  887. isn't long enough.

  888. The fullness of God

  889. was pleased to dwell.

  890. This is our Savior.

  891. And this is our song.

  892. And this is who

  893. God the Father

  894. gave.

  895. Why?

  896. Because of his love.

  897. What God

  898. has already done.

  899. You see,

  900. he came

  901. to finish a work.

  902. He came

  903. to complete

  904. a task.

  905. He was given

  906. to do

  907. and to do that

  908. he gave himself

  909. to death,

  910. even death

  911. on a cross.

  912. He took our place.

  913. He paid our price.

  914. If you this evening

  915. are asking,

  916. what's God

  917. ever done

  918. for me?

  919. Your answer

  920. is the cross.

  921. And the response

  922. to your question

  923. is one

  924. that the gospel

  925. raises.

  926. What have you

  927. done

  928. about what

  929. God has done

  930. for you?

  931. Have you come

  932. to him?

  933. Have you pled

  934. for his mercy

  935. and forgiveness?

  936. Have you sought

  937. his grace

  938. in your heart

  939. to take your sins

  940. away?

  941. Have you come

  942. to him and cried

  943. out the great

  944. New Testament

  945. prayer of confession?

  946. Lord, be merciful

  947. to me, a sinner.

  948. Because that's

  949. where we all begin.

  950. And that's the point

  951. where we all must come

  952. in order to reckon

  953. with God.

  954. We must come

  955. to him

  956. on his terms,

  957. by his appointed

  958. means,

  959. through our mediator,

  960. our redeemer,

  961. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  962. What God

  963. has done.

  964. I want to think

  965. secondly with you

  966. about this.

  967. What God

  968. is doing.

  969. Because this

  970. incredible text

  971. refers not just

  972. to the past

  973. but to the present.

  974. For God

  975. so loved the world

  976. that he gave

  977. his only son

  978. that whoever

  979. believes in him,

  980. that whoever

  981. believes in him

  982. should not perish

  983. but have

  984. eternal life.

  985. So if God

  986. has already

  987. done something,

  988. what is it God

  989. is now doing?

  990. And what God

  991. is doing

  992. is calling us

  993. to his son.

  994. This is my

  995. beloved son.

  996. Hear him.

  997. This is my

  998. beloved son

  999. in whom

  1000. I am well

  1001. pleased.

  1002. And as John

  1003. the Baptist

  1004. said when he

  1005. saw him,

  1006. he couldn't

  1007. contain himself.

  1008. He couldn't

  1009. keep the words

  1010. in.

  1011. He just

  1012. blurted out,

  1013. behold,

  1014. the Lamb

  1015. of God

  1016. who takes

  1017. away the

  1018. sin of the

  1019. world.

  1020. And he

  1021. does.

  1022. And there

  1023. are testaments

  1024. to that

  1025. saving work

  1026. in here

  1027. this evening.

  1028. Many,

  1029. many people,

  1030. men and

  1031. women and

  1032. boys and

  1033. girls,

  1034. who have

  1035. come to know

  1036. Jesus in

  1037. their own

  1038. hearts,

  1039. who have

  1040. prayed the

  1041. prayer of

  1042. faith,

  1043. come into

  1044. my heart,

  1045. come into

  1046. my heart,

  1047. come into

  1048. my heart,

  1049. Lord Jesus,

  1050. come in today,

  1051. come in to

  1052. stay,

  1053. come into

  1054. my heart,

  1055. Lord Jesus.

  1056. This is a

  1057. message of

  1058. salvation.

  1059. And that's

  1060. probably why

  1061. in John's

  1062. writings,

  1063. between his

  1064. gospel and

  1065. his letters,

  1066. when we put

  1067. them together,

  1068. we find the

  1069. word life

  1070. 36 times.

  1071. It's a

  1072. message of

  1073. life.

  1074. And look

  1075. what he

  1076. says here,

  1077. that you

  1078. should not

  1079. perish but

  1080. have eternal

  1081. life.

  1082. Christ wants

  1083. to bring us

  1084. from death

  1085. to life,

  1086. from darkness

  1087. to light,

  1088. from estrangement

  1089. to being

  1090. children of

  1091. God,

  1092. not just

  1093. bringing us

  1094. into the

  1095. palace,

  1096. not just

  1097. bringing us

  1098. into the

  1099. kingdom,

  1100. but bringing

  1101. us right

  1102. into the

  1103. family of

  1104. God.

  1105. This is

  1106. grace.

  1107. Because,

  1108. friends,

  1109. in and of

  1110. ourselves,

  1111. what are we?

  1112. We're

  1113. sinners.

  1114. Look at

  1115. the last

  1116. verse of

  1117. this famous

  1118. chapter,

  1119. John 3

  1120. and verse

  1121. 36.

  1122. We have

  1123. a solemn

  1124. perspective

  1125. and balance

  1126. presented by

  1127. God so

  1128. that tonight

  1129. each one of

  1130. us can go

  1131. home and

  1132. be under

  1133. no illusion,

  1134. no uncertainty

  1135. as to where

  1136. we stand

  1137. tonight before

  1138. our living

  1139. God.

  1140. Whoever

  1141. believes in

  1142. the Son

  1143. has eternal

  1144. life.

  1145. Whoever

  1146. does not

  1147. obey the

  1148. Son shall

  1149. not see

  1150. life,

  1151. but the

  1152. wrath of

  1153. God

  1154. remains

  1155. on him.

  1156. Solemn

  1157. words,

  1158. searching

  1159. words,

  1160. words that

  1161. I believe

  1162. the Spirit

  1163. will use

  1164. this evening

  1165. to seek

  1166. you out

  1167. and to

  1168. stir up

  1169. your conscience

  1170. so that

  1171. you would

  1172. come to

  1173. Christ

  1174. yourself,

  1175. that you

  1176. would come

  1177. and ask

  1178. the question,

  1179. what must

  1180. I do

  1181. to be

  1182. saved?

  1183. What

  1184. did Paul

  1185. say?

  1186. Believe

  1187. in the

  1188. Lord Jesus

  1189. Christ,

  1190. and you

  1191. will be

  1192. saved.

  1193. Believe.

  1194. And there

  1195. it is,

  1196. the gospel

  1197. in a moment

  1198. of time

  1199. as the

  1200. Philippian

  1201. jailer fell

  1202. to his

  1203. knees in

  1204. desperation,

  1205. knowing his

  1206. heart and

  1207. in his

  1208. spirit something

  1209. was wrong,

  1210. sensing the

  1211. void between

  1212. him and

  1213. God,

  1214. sensing that

  1215. he couldn't

  1216. get across

  1217. it himself,

  1218. he cries

  1219. out,

  1220. what must

  1221. I do

  1222. to be

  1223. saved?

  1224. Haven't

  1225. we all

  1226. done that,

  1227. Christian

  1228. friends?

  1229. Yes,

  1230. we have.

  1231. That's what

  1232. brings us

  1233. to Christ,

  1234. acknowledging

  1235. our need

  1236. for him,

  1237. and so we

  1238. come in

  1239. repentance

  1240. and faith,

  1241. and we

  1242. come to

  1243. him,

  1244. and we

  1245. come to

  1246. him in

  1247. conscious

  1248. awareness of

  1249. his summons,

  1250. his invitation

  1251. to come in

  1252. faith and

  1253. believe.

  1254. And look what

  1255. this verse

  1256. says,

  1257. whoever

  1258. believes in

  1259. him,

  1260. there's the

  1261. key word,

  1262. when we

  1263. think about

  1264. what is

  1265. God doing?

  1266. What's God

  1267. doing in

  1268. Stornoway,

  1269. in Scotland,

  1270. across the

  1271. world,

  1272. now,

  1273. this evening?

  1274. God is

  1275. saving those

  1276. who come

  1277. in faith

  1278. to his

  1279. son.

  1280. And who

  1281. are they?

  1282. Here they're

  1283. defined,

  1284. whoever,

  1285. whoever.

  1286. See,

  1287. friends,

  1288. we don't

  1289. know.

  1290. We only

  1291. see the

  1292. outward,

  1293. but God

  1294. looks at

  1295. the heart.

  1296. God knows

  1297. tonight what

  1298. we've done

  1299. with this

  1300. gospel,

  1301. and what

  1302. we've done

  1303. with his

  1304. son.

  1305. He knows

  1306. that if we

  1307. have responded

  1308. in faith,

  1309. He knows

  1310. if we

  1311. have stayed

  1312. back uncertain,

  1313. unconvinced,

  1314. and unconverted,

  1315. waiting for

  1316. another time,

  1317. waiting for

  1318. that eternal

  1319. tomorrow.

  1320. There's always

  1321. tomorrow when

  1322. it comes to

  1323. the gospel,

  1324. the great

  1325. lie of

  1326. Satan.

  1327. Don't worry

  1328. about this,

  1329. that's fine,

  1330. the gospel's

  1331. a great

  1332. message,

  1333. the gospel

  1334. has changed

  1335. lives,

  1336. and yes,

  1337. it's true,

  1338. but listen,

  1339. you've got a

  1340. lot to see

  1341. to,

  1342. you're only

  1343. young.

  1344. Let's think

  1345. about this

  1346. at the next

  1347. communion,

  1348. let's think

  1349. about it

  1350. next Sunday,

  1351. let's think

  1352. about it

  1353. when you

  1354. talk to

  1355. this one

  1356. or talk

  1357. to that

  1358. one,

  1359. any time

  1360. but God's

  1361. time,

  1362. and God's

  1363. appointed time

  1364. for dealing

  1365. with salvation

  1366. is now,

  1367. when in

  1368. his spirit

  1369. and in

  1370. his grace

  1371. and in

  1372. his mercy

  1373. and in

  1374. his providence

  1375. he presents

  1376. his gospel

  1377. to you,

  1378. saying,

  1379. come to

  1380. me,

  1381. and I

  1382. will give

  1383. you rest.

  1384. this is

  1385. the wondrous

  1386. invitation

  1387. and summons

  1388. of Jesus

  1389. Christ.

  1390. The magnitude

  1391. of his love

  1392. is matched

  1393. by the

  1394. magnitude

  1395. of his

  1396. gift,

  1397. and his

  1398. gift is

  1399. nothing other

  1400. and no one

  1401. less than

  1402. his son.

  1403. So John 3

  1404. and 16

  1405. is vast

  1406. in its

  1407. teaching of

  1408. the scope

  1409. of the

  1410. gospel,

  1411. incredible

  1412. in the

  1413. lengths

  1414. that God

  1415. will go

  1416. to.

  1417. It's

  1418. tremendous

  1419. in what

  1420. it sets

  1421. before us.

  1422. First of

  1423. all,

  1424. in what

  1425. God has

  1426. done,

  1427. and we

  1428. can call

  1429. that a

  1430. statement

  1431. of fact.

  1432. He has

  1433. given

  1434. his son.

  1435. Golgotha

  1436. was 2,000

  1437. years ago,

  1438. and now

  1439. tonight we

  1440. have the

  1441. complete

  1442. canon of

  1443. scripture

  1444. in a

  1445. language

  1446. and version

  1447. we can

  1448. read easily

  1449. and follow.

  1450. Isn't

  1451. God good?

  1452. Isn't

  1453. God gracious

  1454. and loving

  1455. and merciful?

  1456. And that

  1457. he's given

  1458. us this

  1459. message of

  1460. his son

  1461. tonight in

  1462. a way we

  1463. can sit

  1464. in comfort,

  1465. not worried

  1466. about the

  1467. police kicking

  1468. in the

  1469. door,

  1470. not worried

  1471. about being

  1472. dragged off

  1473. to prison,

  1474. not under

  1475. persecution,

  1476. but in

  1477. wonderful comfort

  1478. and security

  1479. with plenty

  1480. provided for

  1481. us,

  1482. and we

  1483. can reflect

  1484. tonight for

  1485. this half

  1486. hour together

  1487. on the

  1488. wonderful

  1489. gospel and

  1490. provision of

  1491. Christ.

  1492. For God

  1493. did not

  1494. send his

  1495. son into

  1496. the world

  1497. to condemn

  1498. the world,

  1499. but in

  1500. order that

  1501. the world

  1502. might be

  1503. saved through

  1504. him.

  1505. Let's make

  1506. it more

  1507. personal on

  1508. that.

  1509. How about

  1510. you?

  1511. Because that's

  1512. the essence

  1513. and question

  1514. of the

  1515. gospel.

  1516. God

  1517. searches the

  1518. heart and

  1519. he's asking

  1520. now this

  1521. evening,

  1522. individually,

  1523. what have

  1524. you done

  1525. with my

  1526. son?

  1527. What have

  1528. you done

  1529. with my

  1530. gospel?

  1531. What have

  1532. you done

  1533. with this

  1534. knowledge that

  1535. you have?

  1536. What have

  1537. you done

  1538. with the

  1539. Bible?

  1540. What have

  1541. you done

  1542. with your

  1543. need to

  1544. be forgiven?

  1545. Will you

  1546. still stay

  1547. away?

  1548. Will you

  1549. still

  1550. prevaricate,

  1551. debate,

  1552. argue?

  1553. Will you

  1554. still get

  1555. into a

  1556. remonstrance

  1557. and a

  1558. standoff

  1559. with God?

  1560. Will you

  1561. rail against

  1562. the Holy

  1563. Spirit and

  1564. continue to

  1565. say in

  1566. your hardness

  1567. of heart,

  1568. what's God

  1569. ever done

  1570. for me?

  1571. Or will

  1572. you now,

  1573. friends,

  1574. stop and

  1575. pause and

  1576. think.

  1577. He sent

  1578. his son

  1579. in love.

  1580. He gave

  1581. everything.

  1582. And that's

  1583. why as we

  1584. go through

  1585. the wonderful

  1586. book of the

  1587. Acts of the

  1588. Apostles,

  1589. we read of

  1590. tremendous

  1591. instances

  1592. of clarity,

  1593. of great

  1594. theology,

  1595. but great

  1596. simplicity as

  1597. well.

  1598. Listen to

  1599. Acts 13

  1600. and verse

  1601. 26.

  1602. Brothers,

  1603. sisters,

  1604. sons of the

  1605. family of

  1606. Abraham and

  1607. those among

  1608. you who

  1609. fear God

  1610. to us has

  1611. been sent

  1612. the message

  1613. of this

  1614. salvation.

  1615. And again

  1616. down Acts

  1617. 13 and

  1618. verse 38.

  1619. Let it be

  1620. known to

  1621. you therefore

  1622. brothers that

  1623. through this

  1624. man forgiveness

  1625. of sins is

  1626. proclaimed to

  1627. you and

  1628. by him

  1629. everyone who

  1630. believes is

  1631. freed.

  1632. Isn't that

  1633. wonderful that

  1634. God has been

  1635. so plain and

  1636. clear and

  1637. purposeful,

  1638. tender and

  1639. compassionate and

  1640. gracious and

  1641. ensuring tonight

  1642. we'd be here for

  1643. this short time,

  1644. the end of the

  1645. month of August

  1646. 2022, the

  1647. year opening up

  1648. ahead of us and

  1649. the week closing

  1650. in already.

  1651. And God in his

  1652. providence has

  1653. appointed this time

  1654. in this moment

  1655. that the gospel

  1656. would come before

  1657. you again.

  1658. that Christ in

  1659. his claims over

  1660. you would come

  1661. before you again.

  1662. That our

  1663. condition as

  1664. sinners would

  1665. come before you

  1666. again.

  1667. And again God

  1668. is calling in his

  1669. mercy, come to

  1670. my son.

  1671. Come to the

  1672. one who was

  1673. dead and now

  1674. was alive.

  1675. Come to the

  1676. one who gave

  1677. himself for

  1678. you.

  1679. The great

  1680. declaration of

  1681. Paul's earliest

  1682. letter to the

  1683. Galatians, the

  1684. life I now

  1685. live.

  1686. I live by

  1687. faith in the

  1688. son of God

  1689. who loved me

  1690. and gave

  1691. himself for me

  1692. and to give

  1693. himself for him

  1694. what did he

  1695. do?

  1696. He became a

  1697. curse.

  1698. That's what the

  1699. cross was.

  1700. It's an awful

  1701. scene.

  1702. It's a scene

  1703. that we have to

  1704. study and

  1705. survey but

  1706. friends let us

  1707. do so in awe

  1708. and wonder,

  1709. humility,

  1710. patience,

  1711. tenderness.

  1712. The son of

  1713. God, dead

  1714. on a cross

  1715. for the sins

  1716. of the world.

  1717. Him who was

  1718. no sin.

  1719. How is it put

  1720. in Romans in

  1721. chapter 8?

  1722. As Paul begins

  1723. to unpack this,

  1724. Romans 8 and

  1725. verse 32,

  1726. he who did

  1727. not spare his

  1728. own son but

  1729. gave him up

  1730. for us all,

  1731. how will they

  1732. not also with

  1733. him graciously

  1734. give us all

  1735. things?

  1736. The son of

  1737. God given

  1738. to death.

  1739. and he

  1740. died there

  1741. to complete

  1742. the work

  1743. the father

  1744. had given

  1745. him to do

  1746. in this

  1747. eternal

  1748. covenant,

  1749. this covenant

  1750. of redemption.

  1751. So maybe

  1752. you think

  1753. that it

  1754. doesn't apply

  1755. to you,

  1756. doesn't extend

  1757. to you,

  1758. maybe you

  1759. think you're

  1760. not good

  1761. enough,

  1762. maybe you

  1763. think you've

  1764. got time,

  1765. friends,

  1766. whatever you're

  1767. lining up in

  1768. your lines of

  1769. defense to

  1770. resist the

  1771. gospel call

  1772. in your heart,

  1773. I would urge

  1774. you to put

  1775. them aside,

  1776. listen to the

  1777. words you've

  1778. just sung

  1779. together,

  1780. and plenteous

  1781. redemption is

  1782. ever found

  1783. with him,

  1784. that's a

  1785. wonderful Old

  1786. Testament word,

  1787. that word

  1788. there,

  1789. plenteous in

  1790. the Hebrew

  1791. is rabba,

  1792. and it

  1793. speaks of

  1794. abundance,

  1795. and a

  1796. great abundance,

  1797. so there's an

  1798. abundance of

  1799. what?

  1800. Redemption,

  1801. and it's

  1802. ever found

  1803. with him,

  1804. and from

  1805. all his

  1806. iniquities,

  1807. he Israel

  1808. shall redeem.

  1809. What do we

  1810. need to do?

  1811. We need to

  1812. acknowledge your

  1813. sin,

  1814. and cry out

  1815. for forgiveness,

  1816. and come to

  1817. him for his

  1818. mercy.

  1819. Friends,

  1820. the Bible

  1821. nowhere delutes

  1822. or denies the

  1823. awfulness of

  1824. sin.

  1825. That's what the

  1826. world does.

  1827. That's what

  1828. cultural thinking

  1829. does.

  1830. That's what

  1831. world leaders do

  1832. who are not

  1833. interested in the

  1834. gospel.

  1835. They dumb it

  1836. down,

  1837. and they expect

  1838. and demand the

  1839. church to do

  1840. likewise,

  1841. to dumb down

  1842. the teaching of

  1843. the gospel,

  1844. not to talk

  1845. about sin,

  1846. not to mention

  1847. hell,

  1848. not to raise

  1849. the issue of

  1850. judgment and

  1851. God's eternal

  1852. damnation that

  1853. waits all those

  1854. who turn away

  1855. from him.

  1856. As the gospel

  1857. says,

  1858. whoever does not

  1859. obey the Son

  1860. shall not see

  1861. life,

  1862. but the wrath

  1863. of God remains

  1864. on him.

  1865. God is love

  1866. and light

  1867. and truth

  1868. and mercy

  1869. and wrath,

  1870. and God's

  1871. wrath will be

  1872. poured out

  1873. upon sin,

  1874. and unless and

  1875. until you come

  1876. to Christ,

  1877. and under his

  1878. cover,

  1879. and under his

  1880. righteousness,

  1881. the wrath of

  1882. God remains on

  1883. you.

  1884. That's what the

  1885. scripture tells

  1886. us,

  1887. and we'll be

  1888. tied to church

  1889. if ever we

  1890. move away from

  1891. this declaration

  1892. of good news.

  1893. I read the other

  1894. day a nice story

  1895. about Voltaire,

  1896. can't claim to

  1897. know much about

  1898. the man,

  1899. but I know he

  1900. was a 17th

  1901. century critic,

  1902. thinker,

  1903. philosopher,

  1904. writer,

  1905. and he had a

  1906. great career of

  1907. poking fun at

  1908. the church and

  1909. tearing away at

  1910. the tenants of

  1911. the church,

  1912. and as one of

  1913. history's best

  1914. known atheists,

  1915. he often stated

  1916. by the time I

  1917. am buried,

  1918. the Bible will

  1919. be non-existent.

  1920. A few years

  1921. after his death,

  1922. the Geneva Bible

  1923. Society purchased

  1924. his home and

  1925. turned it into a

  1926. print shop for

  1927. Bibles.

  1928. God will not

  1929. be mocked.

  1930. God had the

  1931. last word with

  1932. that man,

  1933. and we remember

  1934. his arrogance,

  1935. his atheism,

  1936. his emptiness,

  1937. and his

  1938. hopelessness,

  1939. his being

  1940. bound in by

  1941. this humanism

  1942. and this

  1943. atheism,

  1944. this pluralism

  1945. that said,

  1946. anything but

  1947. God,

  1948. don't bring this

  1949. message of

  1950. personal salvation

  1951. to me and a

  1952. need for forgiveness.

  1953. How dare you?

  1954. And what we have

  1955. in Voltaire is

  1956. this shaken

  1957. fist,

  1958. this arrogant

  1959. denial of giving

  1960. God his place

  1961. in our hearts.

  1962. And what does

  1963. God do?

  1964. He comes to us

  1965. again and

  1966. again and

  1967. again in

  1968. his gospel and

  1969. in his grace,

  1970. saying,

  1971. whoever believes

  1972. in him should

  1973. not perish but

  1974. have eternal

  1975. life.

  1976. And this is the

  1977. last thing.

  1978. What God has

  1979. done, a

  1980. statement of

  1981. fact.

  1982. What God is

  1983. doing, a

  1984. statement of

  1985. promise.

  1986. He's saving to

  1987. the uttermost

  1988. those who call

  1989. upon him.

  1990. Then there's

  1991. this last thing,

  1992. what God will

  1993. do.

  1994. And this is a

  1995. statement of

  1996. intent.

  1997. whoever believes

  1998. in him should

  1999. not perish but

  2000. have eternal

  2001. life.

  2002. Now the Bible

  2003. takes this

  2004. teaching of

  2005. what it is to

  2006. perish before

  2007. God.

  2008. It's called

  2009. the second

  2010. death.

  2011. It's called

  2012. banishment in

  2013. a place called

  2014. hell.

  2015. John 3, 36

  2016. makes it clear,

  2017. the wrath of

  2018. God remains on

  2019. him.

  2020. It's possibly

  2021. the most

  2022. unpopular

  2023. teaching in

  2024. the New

  2025. Testament

  2026. today in

  2027. many denominations

  2028. that profess to

  2029. be Christian.

  2030. They have

  2031. Christian above

  2032. their door.

  2033. When you go

  2034. inside, you'll

  2035. hear none of

  2036. this.

  2037. Why?

  2038. Because it's

  2039. offensive.

  2040. Because it's

  2041. difficult.

  2042. Because it's

  2043. searching.

  2044. Because it's

  2045. not the God

  2046. who's on a

  2047. shelf in a

  2048. box, kept

  2049. there nice and

  2050. neat for Easter

  2051. and Christmas

  2052. and baptisms

  2053. and weddings

  2054. and funerals.

  2055. This is the

  2056. God of wonders,

  2057. the God of

  2058. might and

  2059. splendor, who

  2060. is holy and

  2061. just and of

  2062. pure horizon to

  2063. behold in

  2064. equity.

  2065. A God who

  2066. calls us to

  2067. account and

  2068. who tells us

  2069. that the day

  2070. is coming when

  2071. he will appoint

  2072. the end of

  2073. time and usher

  2074. in eternity.

  2075. And that day

  2076. is coming.

  2077. We don't know

  2078. when it will be,

  2079. none of us do.

  2080. And when the

  2081. JWs and the

  2082. Mormons and the

  2083. rest of them

  2084. ring your doorbell

  2085. and start talking

  2086. to you about

  2087. fulfillment of

  2088. prophecies, don't

  2089. listen to them.

  2090. They don't know

  2091. what they're

  2092. talking about.

  2093. They've created

  2094. a scheme of

  2095. teaching and

  2096. thinking that's

  2097. in isolation to

  2098. God's word.

  2099. Nobody knows

  2100. the day or the

  2101. hour.

  2102. We just know

  2103. it's coming.

  2104. And we know

  2105. that we need

  2106. to be ready.

  2107. And this is

  2108. the ultimate

  2109. question.

  2110. Are you

  2111. ready?

  2112. Are you ready

  2113. for that day?

  2114. Because here

  2115. we're told that

  2116. God is coming

  2117. again and he

  2118. will judge the

  2119. world in

  2120. righteousness.

  2121. Read through

  2122. Thessalonians and

  2123. the other letters

  2124. where the

  2125. apostle is

  2126. moved to

  2127. explain and

  2128. express the

  2129. teaching of

  2130. Jesus.

  2131. He came once,

  2132. will come again

  2133. to judge the

  2134. world in

  2135. righteousness.

  2136. It's a day of

  2137. reckoning.

  2138. It's a day of

  2139. accounting when

  2140. all will stand

  2141. before the

  2142. judgment seat.

  2143. And there the

  2144. question will be,

  2145. what did you do

  2146. with my son?

  2147. So friends,

  2148. what God will

  2149. do is the

  2150. very essence

  2151. of the gospel.

  2152. It's what gives

  2153. the Christian

  2154. church her

  2155. sense of

  2156. urgency,

  2157. her determination

  2158. and mission,

  2159. her clarity of

  2160. thought in

  2161. forming strategies

  2162. and plans and

  2163. developing courts

  2164. of the church.

  2165. Why?

  2166. To feel good

  2167. about ourselves

  2168. and to think,

  2169. well, we've done

  2170. well, haven't we?

  2171. Let's wave the

  2172. flag of our

  2173. denomination.

  2174. Not for a

  2175. minute.

  2176. It's not what

  2177. it's about.

  2178. We don't

  2179. impress the

  2180. Lord with

  2181. these things.

  2182. Our sense

  2183. of urgency

  2184. comes simply

  2185. in wanting

  2186. people lost

  2187. in sin

  2188. to be saved.

  2189. This is a

  2190. message of

  2191. salvation,

  2192. not a

  2193. message of

  2194. religion.

  2195. salvation.

  2196. Christ Jesus

  2197. came into

  2198. the world

  2199. to save

  2200. sinners.

  2201. He came in

  2202. to seek

  2203. and to

  2204. save the

  2205. lost.

  2206. I'll share

  2207. with you a

  2208. nice story

  2209. I read just

  2210. as we close

  2211. of a

  2212. sculpture,

  2213. a sculpture

  2214. that was made

  2215. by Michelangelo.

  2216. Michelangelo was

  2217. consumed with

  2218. self-loathing

  2219. and self-criticism

  2220. as he came to

  2221. the end of his

  2222. life and he

  2223. rarely finished

  2224. the sculptures

  2225. he began.

  2226. All his

  2227. finished works

  2228. are from

  2229. early in his

  2230. career.

  2231. He was free

  2232. and expressed

  2233. his amazing

  2234. skills to

  2235. sculpt marble

  2236. things that

  2237. today are

  2238. still looked

  2239. at in awe.

  2240. But toward

  2241. the end of

  2242. his life he

  2243. began to

  2244. lose patience

  2245. with himself

  2246. and he was

  2247. so critical

  2248. he would

  2249. destroy his

  2250. works and

  2251. he'd been

  2252. working on

  2253. three,

  2254. four,

  2255. five years.

  2256. One of

  2257. them was

  2258. the Florentine

  2259. Pieta.

  2260. It's a

  2261. sculpture that

  2262. as far as

  2263. we can tell

  2264. he lost

  2265. patience with

  2266. after working

  2267. on it for

  2268. a number of

  2269. years and

  2270. he began to

  2271. smash it up

  2272. with a hammer

  2273. and then he

  2274. left it.

  2275. Then some

  2276. time later

  2277. a young

  2278. sculptor

  2279. apprentice was

  2280. brought in

  2281. to restore

  2282. the damaged

  2283. work that the

  2284. master craftsman

  2285. had abandoned.

  2286. And over

  2287. time and

  2288. with patience

  2289. and skill

  2290. and ability

  2291. that masterpiece

  2292. was returned

  2293. to its former

  2294. state telling

  2295. the story

  2296. that Michelangelo

  2297. had started

  2298. but hadn't

  2299. finished.

  2300. It's a

  2301. wonderful story

  2302. of restoration

  2303. and I think

  2304. that's a theme

  2305. that we find

  2306. here in

  2307. John 3

  2308. 16.

  2309. For God

  2310. so loved

  2311. the world

  2312. that he

  2313. gave his

  2314. only son

  2315. that whoever

  2316. believes in

  2317. him should

  2318. not perish

  2319. but have

  2320. eternal life.

  2321. Christ would

  2322. restore you

  2323. to communion

  2324. with God

  2325. the Father.

  2326. Christ would

  2327. restore you

  2328. to a place

  2329. of favour

  2330. and grace

  2331. and blessing

  2332. and peace.

  2333. That's what

  2334. Christ does

  2335. to all those

  2336. who come to

  2337. him in faith

  2338. to all those

  2339. who come to

  2340. him in repentance

  2341. to all those

  2342. who come to

  2343. men and women

  2344. and boys and

  2345. girls in

  2346. repentance

  2347. and wholeheartedness

  2348. and that's why

  2349. we have these

  2350. wonderful statements

  2351. such as this

  2352. in Romans 8

    Romans 8:1

  2353. verse 1

  2354. there is

  2355. therefore now

  2356. no condemnation

  2357. for those

  2358. who are in

  2359. Christ Jesus.

  2360. Are you?

  2361. Are you in

  2362. Christ?

  2363. Thanks be to

  2364. God.

  2365. But if you're

  2366. not in Christ

  2367. I ask you

  2368. in this moment

  2369. of silence

  2370. we're going to

  2371. bow together

  2372. in prayer

  2373. call out to

  2374. him

  2375. seek him

  2376. and seek

  2377. the forgiveness

  2378. of heart

  2379. that only

  2380. Christ can

  2381. effect by the

  2382. spirit and in

  2383. his grace

  2384. to restore

  2385. you from

  2386. alienation

  2387. and distance

  2388. and hardness

  2389. of heart

  2390. to being

  2391. made new

  2392. and being

  2393. made right

  2394. with God

  2395. may he bless

  2396. us that this

  2397. would be so.

  2398. Let's pray

  2399. together for a

  2400. moment.

  2401. Our

  2402. gracious God

  2403. we bow

  2404. in your

  2405. presence

  2406. we thank

  2407. you that

  2408. you have

  2409. given us

  2410. the gospel.

  2411. Thank you

  2412. Lord God

  2413. that we

  2414. have this

  2415. word of

  2416. life

  2417. the promise

  2418. of life

  2419. in Christ

  2420. Jesus

  2421. tonight

  2422. Lord we

  2423. pray you

  2424. would bless

  2425. your word

  2426. to our

  2427. hearts

  2428. that we

  2429. might take

  2430. your word

  2431. into our

  2432. life and

  2433. home with

  2434. us this

  2435. evening to

  2436. reflect upon

  2437. your amazing

  2438. grace

  2439. that you

  2440. gave your

  2441. son in

  2442. love

  2443. and he

  2444. came

  2445. willingly

  2446. in

  2447. obedience

  2448. sins

  2449. and died

  2450. in our

  2451. place and

  2452. in our

  2453. stead on

  2454. the cross

  2455. by his

  2456. wounds we

  2457. are healed.

  2458. We give

  2459. thanks that we

  2460. have a

  2461. redeemer.

  2462. We give

  2463. thanks that we

  2464. know him as

  2465. our saviour and

  2466. we pray now

  2467. Lord God for

  2468. your blessing to

  2469. rest upon those

  2470. this evening

  2471. who may be

  2472. struggling with a

  2473. sense of sin

  2474. who may be

  2475. struggling with a

  2476. sense of

  2477. estrangement.

  2478. Lord open

  2479. their eyes

  2480. open their

  2481. hearts

  2482. draw them

  2483. to Jesus

  2484. there to

  2485. meet with

  2486. the one who

  2487. is all

  2488. together

  2489. lovely

  2490. the one who

  2491. is the

  2492. way

  2493. the truth

  2494. and the

  2495. life

  2496. in his name

  2497. we ask it

  2498. amen

  2499. we'll turn to

  2500. sing psalms

  2501. this evening

  2502. and we'll sing

  2503. from psalm 34

  2504. in verse 7

  2505. to close our

  2506. service

  2507. psalm 34

  2508. and we'll sing

  2509. from verse 7

  2510. we'll sing to

  2511. verse 11

  2512. to God's

  2513. praise the

  2514. angel of the

  2515. Lord surrounds

  2516. and guards

  2517. continually all

  2518. those who fear

  2519. and honour

  2520. him he sets

  2521. his people

  2522. free come

  2523. taste and see

  2524. the Lord is

  2525. good who

  2526. trusts in him

  2527. is blessed

  2528. oh fear the

  2529. Lord you

  2530. saints with

  2531. need you

  2532. will not be

  2533. oppressed

  2534. psalm 34

    Psalms 34:7–11

  2535. verses 7

  2536. to 11

  2537. and at the end

2538. if you give me a moment

2539. just to get to the main door

  2540. please that would be

  2541. appreciated

  2542. we'll sing from

  2543. verse 7

  2544. to God's praise

  2545. prayer for the Lord's

  2546. you

  2547. love the Lord is

  2548. and guards

  2549. pant mutually

2550. All those who fear that God and Him

2551. He sets His people free

2552. From this town see the Lord is true

2553. Who trusts in Him is blessed

2554. O fear the Lord, you saints with me

2555. You will not be oppressed

2556. We of my own state grow weak and faint

2557. And hunger for their food

2558. But those who wait upon the Lord

2559. Will not lack any good

2560. Come here, my children, gather round

2561. And listen to my word

2562. And I will help you understand

2563. How you may fear the Lord

2564. May the blessing of God Almighty

2565. Father, Son and Holy Spirit

2566. Rest on you and those whom you love

  2567. Now and forever

  2568. Amen

  2569. Amen
