  1. word in the book of psalms and psalm 100

  2. psalm 100 we're going to look at this psalm together the whole psalm it is a psalm of

  3. thanksgiving as a heading in some of the bibles well how we are to give thanks to god for all

  4. his blessings to us we ask ourselves the question though how often do we give thanks to god

  5. now are we as thankful as we we should be now these questions still surge at hearts as god's

  6. questions often do are we as thankful as we should be and how often do we thank god i'm sure

  7. for all of us here there's not a day goes past that we're not thankful to god for so many things

  8. but today i want us to think of it as a day of thanksgiving not especially a pointed day

  9. but a day as with every day that we can see the many reasons we do have to give thanks

  10. and especially tonight looking back over the past weekend and giving thanks for god's goodness to us

  11. in so many ways it was a blessed time together and still feeling that even today and hopefully

  12. we'll keep feeling that in the days ahead that we were blessed by god he was with us through

  13. the preaching of the word he was with us as we sat at the lord's table he was with us in our fellowship

  14. with one another he was with us in so many ways and truly we have so many reasons to give thanks

  15. an encouraging time and a time we pray that will spur us on and keep us going from strength to strength

  16. because we have been through as we heard in the prayers a difficult period of not being able to gather

  17. in such a way we pray that bit by bit god god is building up his people again giving us the confidence

  18. to go forward in his strength and by filling our hearts with thankfulness that gives us a strength

  19. to keep looking to him as we go forward we read in paul's letter to the colossians there in chapter 2

  20. these words although i am absent in body as a verse 5 yet i am with you in spirit rejoicing to see your

  21. good order and the firmness of your faith in christ therefore as you received christ jesus the lord

  22. so walk in him rooted and built up in him and established in the faith just as you were taught

  23. and he concludes that little section abounding in thanksgiving abounding in thanksgiving so you see

  24. all the things that are mentioned there the rejoicing in the order and firmness of your faith the things

  25. we want to see in all god's people how you received christ how you are to walk in him rooted built up

  26. established in faith all of these things that we long to see in each of us as god's children

  27. abounding in thanksgiving thanksgiving completes our praise to god there paul is encouraging his people

  28. in the midst of great challenges not to lose heart but to press on to press on in this way

  29. and to do so abounding in thanksgiving the more we see of what christ has done and the faith that we

  30. have received from him to be able to love him as we do because he first loved us let us truly be

  31. thankful for all that he has done and with these words in mind i want us to look at at psalm 100

  32. together this evening a psalm of thanksgiving i want to see what it has to say to us it is as we've said a psalm

  33. a song of thanksgiving as a thanksgiving psalm both in terms of who god is and what he has done

  34. and indeed what he is continuing to do for his people it's a psalm that gives us commands and

  35. instructions to be a people who come to him in worship it's calling us to come before him to come

  36. into his presence to serve the lord with gladness to come into his presence with singing to go on

  37. in worship and thanksgiving to him it's a psalm you could say has has great breadth it's a psalm that's

  38. a call to all mankind to come and give thanks to god that is our prayer but it's also a psalm

  39. of great depth the depths that there is in the truths of who god is and the depths that there is

  40. and how god has been calling his people through generation after generation we can look at it every

  41. generation past present and future who are called to come and worship god and our savior the lord

  42. jesus christ even though it was a psalm that has its setting in the temple courts of the old

  43. testament as the people gathered there to worship god it doesn't stay in the old testament it's very

  44. much a psalm that follows into the new testament that we are to be a people who are to come in this way

  45. to gather before god in his presence and to do so through christ who has opened the way fully for us

  46. to come and to come as we say with thanksgiving and three things i want us to see here in this psalm

  47. about the way this psalm instructs us in our thanksgiving the first thing is the way of

  48. thanksgiving and the second thing is the reason of thanksgiving and then thirdly we see the endurance

  49. of thanksgiving so the first thing is the way of thanksgiving who or what do we give thanks to

  50. it's a question we're all able to answer tonight i hope in the same way we give our thanks to god

  51. but as we we think of that question in a wider sense in a wider society who or what do people

  52. give thanks to we have been experiencing and still experiencing challenging days that make us think of

  53. many of life's issues people are looking for purpose in life what is it what is it to have

  54. purpose in life people are thinking about the future what will it be like there's so many changes we're

  55. seeing in our world what is lying ahead of us we see a day of many troubles and we're reminded of the reality

  56. of them we think of people as we should all be looking for hope but what is it in

  57. as god's children we know the answer to these questions we know our purpose we are made to worship god

  58. the future we know all the promises that are yeah and amen in christ that he has a plan and a purpose

  59. that he is preparing a city for his people he plans our ways he plans our steps he guides our paths

  60. we look to him for all things in the future in the midst of troubles we know too that jesus has promised

  61. we will have troubles but to be of good courage to be of good heart because he has overcome

  62. the world and our hope our hope is in christ we have that much to be thankful for that as god's people

  63. we come to a living god giving thanks to him and our prayer is that as a church we will be built up

  64. to show forth that thanksgiving to others that as the psalm i think psalm 69 the first psalm we sang spoke of

  65. that we would be a witness to others that they would see our thanksgiving and wonder of it

  66. a couple of years back when covid initially started there was a fascinating article in the scotsman

  67. newspaper in these early days people were really challenged and shaken by what was happening and an

  68. article was written and the title of it was secular gods are failing so many in the time of

  69. covid the article opens with this line it says there are no true atheists in reality everybody

  70. worships something this was not a christian writing this article but it was written in a sense where

  71. we were being made to think well what are we worshiping everyone was being asked the question

  72. what are you worshiping we're not atheists we there's no such thing we all worship something

  73. so who do we worship it spoke of how many people were inquiring about the christian faith

  74. they were seeing their secular gods failing them failing to satisfy their lives and beginning to question

  75. what is it who are we worshiping what is the purpose in life but are these questions still through today

  76. so quickly people started just to go back to the old ways to forget about god and any thought of

  77. inquiring after him instead of giving thanks to god for coming through when was that day appointed as a

  78. national day of prayer by our nation for giving thanks for all that we came through in covid

  79. well we're still waiting for a day to be appointed will it happen well we doubt it because of where our nation

  80. is at but who are we worshiping tonight who do we give thanks to tonight not just for bringing us through

  81. for restoring us for being with us but we pray to build us up to make us stronger to go forward in his strength

  82. we worship god not just in the good times but at all times we worship him now seeking better times now

  83. but also that assurance of eternity the writer c.s lewis once said god whispers to us in our pleasures

  84. he speaks in our consciences but shouts in our pains it is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world

  85. and hasn't god shouted into our pains

  86. he has been shaking us he is still shaking us but are we listening that is what psalm 100 reminds us of

  87. that we are able to come and worship him and give thanks to him to make a joyful noise to the lord

  88. all the earth serve the lord with gladness come into his presence with singing

  89. whatever our circumstances we have much to give thanks for

  90. and we have been encouraged in these days and let us stay encouraged let us stay with our hope fixed

  91. in our lord jesus christ in his word to have confidence in it in his spirit who is working

  92. dwight l moody it was a great servant for god and when they began to build what would later become

  93. moody bible institute when they were laying the foundation for it they set a cornerstone

  94. and dwight l moody was there at that time and it said that as the stone was laid he offered up a prayer

  95. and he gave the cornerstone a whack with a trowel and then he prayed and said thus

  96. lord you know what this old world needs more than anything else is thy word we pray that the day will

  97. never come when anything contrary to the bible is taught here

  98. and that is true for everywhere where god's word is taught and proclaimed this world this old world

  99. still needs god's word more than anything else these days remind us of scriptures that speak of god

  100. seeing a people corrupt corrupt in sin and the judgment that he brought upon them where you go back to the

  101. days of noah or the days of the exodus so you just work your way through scriptures and you see time and time

  102. again how god sees a people worshiping false gods turning away from the living god and what does he use to bring them back to their senses

  103. he brings judgment

  104. and today we see god's judgment on us again and again

  105. and may it be that as a people we give thanks that god has not turned away but that he is speaking

  106. and may we pray that we will hear as his church and pray to god to pour out his spirit upon us as a people

  107. to revive us to quicken us that we would see as the psalm says all the earth

  108. all the earth to make a joyful noise to the lord what does he see in our hearts today then

  109. is it that shout of joy thankfulness we make sure that we keep our eyes on the lord looking to him

  110. our call to worship and thanksgiving in this psalm is a call to remember god and all his gracious benefits

  111. all that he has done we can look back just a few days

  112. but we can look back further as we heard in prayer to

  113. generations we give thanks for god's word down through generations to us

  114. and we pray that a generation yet unborn

  115. would hear the word of god and rejoice

  116. in him

  117. the second thing we see here is the reason for thanksgiving

  118. we have a call to worship with thanks found in verse 1 and 2

  119. then in verse 3 we're given this this wonderful reason

  120. for giving thanks to god

  121. know that the lord is the lord he is god

  122. it is he who made us and we are his we are his people and the sheep of his pasture

  123. first of all we see that again there is this imperative there

  124. know know that the lord he is god

  125. know with confidence who you have worshipped and are worshipping

  126. know with confidence who we are giving thanks to

  127. it is god who we met with in word and sacrament

  128. it is god who we meet with day by day

  129. in thanksgiving and prayer and through his word to us

  130. we meet with a living god

  131. and that we are thankful for

  132. but what does it mean

  133. to know god

  134. what does it mean

  135. for us to know god

  136. well one of the things that we

  137. see in the scriptures is

  138. the gift of god knowing him that we find in psalm 40

    Psalms 40:1

  139. verse 1 to verse 3

  140. that psalm says and we could repeat it i waited

  141. patiently for the lord he heard my cry

  142. he took me from the pit

  143. out of the clay and set my feet

  144. upon a rock making my steps secure

  145. it is the lord who is the god of our salvation

  146. it is him who has brought us up

  147. it is him who we are thankful for the reason we are thankful is

  148. we could not save ourselves

  149. but god by his grace lifted us up

  150. and as he lift us up he says he puts a new song

  151. in my mouth a song

  152. to praise our god

  153. he gives us

  154. a new song

  155. a song of praise

  156. a song of thanksgiving

  157. he reminds us of all the reasons we have to give thanks to god

  158. the psalmist then says that

  159. we are

  160. his people

  161. the sheep of his

  162. pasture

  163. we are his

  164. personal

  165. possession

  166. that's what the psalmist is saying there

  167. and why is that

  168. well it's the foundation of our reasons for thanksgiving

  169. as we have remembered over these past days

  170. our reason for thanksgiving is that he gave himself for us

  171. titus 2 verse 14 says

    Titus 2:14

  172. who gave himself for us to redeem us

  173. from all lawlessness

  174. is that such an encouraging verse

  175. thinking back

  176. but also looking forward

  177. who gave himself for us

  178. to redeem us

  179. to purify for himself a people for his own possession

  180. we are his

  181. who are sellers for good works

  182. who are sellers going forward

  183. in serving the lord

  184. we are his by the reason of the fact that

  185. he paid the price

  186. to redeem us

  187. when we were sold

  188. under sin

  189. we can praise his name

  190. that he paid the price

  191. he died for us

  192. to set us free

  193. we are to be thankful

  194. that we are his

  195. redeemed

  196. what does that mean

  197. to be redeemed

  198. by god

  199. there are

  200. three different words

  201. used in translation of redeemed

  202. in the new testament

  203. but every one of them

  204. the foundation is being bought

  205. with a price

  206. galatians 4

    Galatians 4:5

  207. verse 5

  208. but when the fullness of time had come

  209. god sent forth

  210. his son

  211. he goes on

  212. to redeem those

  213. who are under the law

  214. so we might receive adoption

  215. as sons

  216. the word there means

  217. to take off the market

  218. in other words

  219. jesus

  220. paid the price

  221. for us

  222. we're no longer for sales

  223. for sale

  224. we are no longer slaves

  225. to sin

  226. in that way

  227. that we have been redeemed

  228. and bought and purchased

  229. with a price

  230. not just bought for a time

  231. but bought for eternity

  232. because he intends to keep us

  233. and he will

  234. keep us

  235. preacher robert murray mcshane

  236. who was in

  237. dundee

  238. who died

  239. very young himself

  240. he said

  241. he said if christ

  242. had not chosen me

  243. i would never have chosen him

  244. if christ had not shed his blood for me

  245. i would never have shed a tear for him

  246. if christ had not sought after me

  247. i would never have sought after him

  248. if christ had not loved me

  249. i would never have loved him

  250. the transforming power of grace

  251. robert murray mcshane knew it

  252. and if we know it

  253. as i hope we all do

  254. then it makes us thankful

  255. to god for all

  256. that he has done

  257. that he has redeemed us

  258. that he has paid

  259. the price

  260. for us

  261. that we might praise

  262. his name

  263. and as we see in this verse too

  264. we are his people of his pasture

  265. he gives us that assurance

  266. here in this psalmist

  267. we see so often

  268. through the scriptures

  269. that we are

  270. his sheep

  271. that he will look after

  272. jesus says

  273. i lay down my life

  274. for my sheep

  275. and we are a reminder

  276. of that constantly

  277. of the

  278. the way that he will supply

  279. our every need

  280. and it's summed up really

  281. in psalm

  282. 23

  283. for us

  284. the lord is my shepherd

  285. i shall not want

  286. i shall not lack

  287. it covers

  288. it all

  289. the list is endless

  290. of the reasons

  291. that we have to give thanks

  292. because the lord is my shepherd

  293. i shall not lack

  294. may we go on

  295. giving thanks to god

  296. with that reason of thanksgiving

  297. that we have

  298. in christ jesus

  299. the third and final thing

  300. we see in this psalm

  301. then is the endurance

  302. of thanksgiving

  303. and we see that in the

  304. in the closing verses

  305. verse four and five

  306. enter his gates with thanksgiving

  307. and his courts with praise

  308. give thanks to him

  309. bless his name

  310. for the lord

  311. is good

  312. his steadfast love

  313. endures forever

  314. ever

  315. and his faithfulness

  316. to all

  317. generations

  318. when we have this

  319. thankful knowledge

  320. of god

  321. he opens

  322. the gates

  323. for us

  324. the experience

  325. of the psalmist

  326. was to enter

  327. into praise

  328. and worship

  329. of god

  330. was to go through

  331. the gates

  332. into the presence

  333. of god

  334. and we have that

  335. access

  336. through christ

  337. we come

  338. through him

  339. who is the door

  340. we come

  341. through him

  342. who is the way

  343. we enter boldly

  344. into the presence

  345. of god

  346. through his name

  347. we have access

  348. in this way

  349. no longer

  350. do we come

  351. with sacrifices

  352. no longer

  353. do we come

  354. with bull

  355. and oxen

  356. and all the rest

  357. because the price

  358. has been paid

  359. the sacrifice

  360. has been given

  361. given

  362. we come

  363. in the name

  364. of the lord

  365. jesus christ

  366. we come

  367. to remember

  368. his precious name

  369. and to give

  370. thanks to him

  371. and to go on

  372. giving thanks

  373. to him

  374. this is ongoing

  375. praise

  376. god's love

  377. is steadfast

  378. and endures

  379. to all generations

  380. and that is a reason

  381. god is faithful

  382. and worthy

  383. of all our praise

  384. and thanksgiving

  385. and that's what

  386. he's calling us

  387. to today as well

  388. to come

  389. and worship him

  390. to come and give

  391. thanks to him

  392. because all

  393. other secular

  394. gods

  395. are worthless

  396. they are idols

  397. dumb

  398. as the scriptures

  399. describe them

  400. but we read here

  401. for the lord

  402. is good

  403. and that is

  404. what we have

  405. known

  406. that is what

  407. we know

  408. and that's

  409. what we pray

  410. we will go on

  411. knowing that

  412. he is good

  413. and are we able

  414. to say that

  415. today

  416. because if we know

  417. him

  418. you surely

  419. can

  420. can we not

  421. come

  422. and say

  423. the lord

  424. has been good

  425. to us

  426. so may we go

  427. forward

  428. remembering that

  429. we are his

  430. that we are

  431. his people

  432. that his love

  433. endures forever

  434. and his faithfulness

  435. to all

  436. generations

  437. the lord

  438. is saying

  439. to us

  440. you are mine

  441. and i will

  442. keep you

  443. just like it

  444. says in malachi

  445. in the old

  446. testament

  447. there in

  448. chapter 3

  449. verse 16

  450. it says

  451. then those

  452. who feared

  453. the lord

  454. spoke with

  455. one another

  456. it speaks

  457. there

  458. of fellowship

  459. of reminding

  460. and encouraging

  461. one another

  462. and then it

  463. says the lord

  464. paid attention

  465. and heard

  466. them

  467. and a book

  468. of remembrance

  469. was written

  470. before him

  471. of those

  472. who feared

  473. the lord

  474. and esteemed

  475. his name

  476. and he said

  477. they shall be

  478. mine

  479. says the lord

  480. of hosts

  481. in the day

  482. when i make

  483. up my

  484. treasured

  485. possession

  486. and i will

  487. spare them

  488. as a man

  489. spares his

  490. son

  491. who serves

  492. him

  493. he will

  494. make up

  495. his treasures

  496. and you

  497. as his

  498. people

  499. as his

  500. children

  501. will be

  502. part of

  503. that

  504. treasured

  505. possession

  506. we have

  507. that

  508. assurance

  509. the endurance

  510. of praises

  511. that we

  512. will ever

  513. praise

  514. the lord

  515. the parents

  516. of a young

  517. man who

  518. was killed

  519. in the

  520. second world

  521. war

  522. they were

  523. at a memorial

  524. service

  525. in the church

  526. after the war

  527. and they

  528. made a payment

  529. to the church

  530. of 200

  531. pounds

  532. as a memorial

  533. to the son

  534. that they'd

  535. lost

  536. and that

  537. was a

  538. great sum

  539. of money

  540. at that

  541. time

  542. but in the

  543. service

  544. that day

  545. was another

  546. mother of

  547. a son who

  548. had been

  549. to war

  550. but that

  551. son had

  552. come home

  553. but she

  554. whispered to

  555. her husband

  556. who was

  557. sitting beside

  558. her and

  559. said let

  560. us give

  561. the same

  562. for our

  563. boy

  564. the husband

  565. turned and

  566. said well

  567. why what

  568. are you

  569. talking about

  570. our boy

  571. didn't

  572. lose his

  573. life

  574. and the

  575. mother said

  576. that's just

  577. the point

  578. the ones

  579. who had

  580. lost a

  581. son

  582. were thankful

  583. the ones

  584. who still

  585. had their

  586. son

  587. were encouraged

  588. in that

  589. moment

  590. to give

  591. thanks for

  592. what they

  593. had

  594. and so

  595. often in

  596. our life

  597. as we

  598. live

  599. we forget

  600. the price

  601. that has

  602. been paid

  603. the one

  604. who gave

  605. his life

  606. we live

  607. because he

  608. died

  609. and as we

  610. think of

  611. that

  612. the endurance

  613. of our

  614. thanksgiving

  615. should go

  616. on

  617. we have

  618. life

  619. through him

  620. by faith

  621. and for that

  622. we give

  623. thanks

  624. God alone

  625. is worthy

  626. of all

  627. our praise

  628. may he

  629. fill our

  630. hearts

  631. with

  632. thankfulness

  633. there was

  634. a minister

  635. in

  636. Edinburgh

  637. many years

  638. back

  639. he was

  640. known

  641. he was

  642. called

  643. Alexander

  644. White

  645. he was

  646. quite a

  647. famous

  648. minister

  649. in his

  650. day

  651. but he

  652. was

  653. always

  654. knowing

  655. for

  656. uplifting

  657. prayers

  658. in the

  659. pulpit

  660. he always

  661. had

  662. a reason

  663. to give

  664. thanks

  665. well there

  666. was this

  667. Sunday

  668. morning

  669. one Sunday

  670. morning

  671. as they

  672. gathered

  673. for worship

  674. and the

  675. weather

  676. outside

  677. was horrendous

  678. rain and

  679. wind

  680. gales

  681. blowing

  682. and there

  683. was someone

  684. sitting in

  685. the church

  686. whispered to

  687. the person

  688. beside them

  689. well surely

  690. the preacher

  691. he won't

  692. have anything

  693. to give

  694. thanks for

  695. today

  696. not on

  697. such a

  698. wretched

  699. day as

  700. this

  701. as he

  702. began to

  703. pray

  704. his words

  705. were

  706. we thank

  707. thee oh

  708. God

  709. it's not

  710. always like

  711. this

  712. and as we

  713. look back

  714. over these

  715. last number

  716. of years

  717. are we

  718. given

  719. thanks to

  720. God

  721. in the

  722. midst of

  723. all the

  724. challenges

  725. it's not

  726. always like

  727. this

  728. and as we

  729. go forward

  730. may we see

  731. his son

  732. rising

  733. on our

  734. church

  735. and on

  736. our people

  737. to make

  738. us thankful

  739. and bless

  740. us

  741. and give

  742. our thankfulness

  743. even more

  744. going forward

  745. praising his

  746. name

  747. for all

  748. that he

  749. has done

  750. may we

  751. be thankful

  752. evermore

  753. for all

  754. his goodness

  755. to us

  756. let us

  757. pray

  758. our father

  759. in heaven

  760. you bless

  761. us so

  762. much

  763. and we

  764. thank you

  765. that even

  766. in the

  767. darkest

  768. of days

  769. we can

  770. say

  771. thank you

  772. lord

  773. it's not

  774. always like

  775. this

  776. and we

  777. pray lord

  778. that you

  779. will make

  780. your face

  781. to shine

  782. upon us

  783. anew

  784. that you

  785. will fill

  786. our hearts

  787. with a

  788. true sense

  789. of thankfulness

  790. to be able

  791. to praise

  792. your name

  793. and to go

  794. on oh lord

  795. in your

  796. strength

  797. saying

  798. the lord

  799. is good

  800. we are

  801. blessed

  802. as so

  803. much

  804. and we

  805. are humbled

  806. by you

  807. and so we

  808. pray lord

  809. keep us

  810. in your

  811. presence

  812. and in

  813. your strength

  814. as we

  815. ask it

  816. in jesus

  817. name

  818. amen

  819. thank you
