  1. We'll begin our worship by singing to God's praise in Psalm 34.

  2. It's the Sing Psalms version on page 40 of the Psalm book.

  3. We're going to sing from verse 8 to verse 14.

  4. Again, I'm just a reminder that the Sunday school starts today and the tweenies will

  5. come in as well and they'll go out to the Sunday school and the tweenies during the

  6. second singing.

  7. So we're glad that the Sunday school and resuming again today, we give thanks for that.

  8. Psalm 34 at verse 8, come taste and see, the Lord is good who trusts and him is blessed.

  9. O fear the Lord, you saints with need, you will not be oppressed.

  10. We'll sing from verse 8 to 14 to God's praise and we stand to sing.

  11. Come taste and see, the Lord is good who trusts and him is blessed.

  12. O fear the Lord, you saints with need, you will not be oppressed.

  13. Young lions may grow weak and faint and hunger for their food, but those who wait upon the Lord

  14. will not be oppressed.

  15. Come hear my children gather round and listen to my word.

  16. And I will help you understand how you may fear the Lord.

  17. Does anyone delight in life and long to see good days?

  18. God bless you, the Lord is good.

  19. Then keep your tongue from evil speech, your lips from lying ways.

  20. Depart and turn from evil paths and practice what is right.

  21. Desire to know the way of peace, pursue it with your might.

  22. I will come to God in prayer. Let us pray.

  23. Amen.

  24. I will come to my word and I will help you understand how you may fear the Lord.

  25. We pray that every one of us as we gather together here will have a real hunger to come and hear what you have to say to us.

  26. And to give thanks that in him we have one who is able to save.

  27. Help us to turn from our evil paths if that is what we need.

  28. And that we would come and follow him and put our trust in him.

  29. We thank you then for your word.

  30. We thank you for all your people as we gather together in your name today.

  31. Here and as those who tune online.

  32. Those who meet throughout our land and throughout the world today.

  33. We thank you that there is a chorus of your people offering a praise to you far and wide.

  34. And so we ask that you will hear our prayers.

  35. That you will bless us in all we do.

  36. May it be to your glory.

  37. And all we ask, we ask the forgiveness of our sins.

  38. In Jesus name.

  39. Amen.

  40. Amen.

  41. Well a word to the young ones before you go out.

  42. As I was praying there I mentioned that this is the day that the Lord has made.

  43. And what do we think of when we think maybe of these words?

  44. This is the day.

  45. What day is the psalmist there talking about?

  46. What's your favorite day of the week?

  47. Does anybody have a favorite day of the week?

  48. I'm sure everybody's favorite day is Monday.

  49. Is it?

  50. Monday is usually everybody's favorite day.

  51. When you get to go back to school.

  52. When you get to go back to work.

  53. It's a great day, is it?

  54. I don't think you're convinced that Monday is your favorite day at all.

  55. Maybe Saturday is your favorite day.

  56. Saturday when you get to take a break.

  57. Have a long lie.

  58. Do the things that you want.

  59. Maybe meet up with pals and enjoy a wee break.

  60. Just think about that.

  61. What's your favorite day of the week?

  62. Another thing is that sometimes maybe when you wake up.

  63. You wonder what day is it?

  64. Not just young ones but older ones too.

  65. Especially maybe during holiday times.

  66. You wake up and you wonder what day is it today?

  67. And how do you find out what day it is?

  68. Maybe you put it on the news.

  69. And see well what day is it?

  70. They'll tell me on the news.

  71. Or you pick up a newspaper and it'll tell you what day it is.

  72. Maybe you check your phone or something like that.

  73. Just to find out what day it is.

  74. And sometimes you'll maybe be disappointed what day it is.

  75. Other days you'll be glad what day it is.

  76. I want you to think today about a special day that God has given to us.

  77. He has given us every day of course.

  78. All seven days in the week.

  79. But he gave us a special day in the week.

  80. And a day that I hope will if it's not already become all of our favorite day of the week.

  81. All of that to us.

  82. That will be our favorite day of the week.

  83. And that is Sunday.

  84. Sunday and today is a special day because we come together to worship God.

  85. We come together today with Sunday school starting once again.

  86. We come with the creche and the tweenies coming together.

  87. We come as a people.

  88. We come and worship God together.

  89. And it really is a special day.

  90. And that's what the psalm reminds us.

  91. Psalm 118.

  92. Where the psalmist says,

  93. This is the day God made in it.

  94. We'll joy triumphantly.

  95. The psalmist is so glad that there is a day that we can come and worship God.

  96. And may that be our song today as we come together.

  97. That we would delight and rejoice that God has given us this day.

  98. His own day.

  99. The Lord's day.

  100. This Sunday.

  101. To come and worship Him together.

  102. We may have other favorite days in the week as well.

  103. Days we enjoy doing different things on.

  104. But may Sunday really be a special day for us all.

  105. Where we give thanks to God for the rest that He gives us.

  106. And especially the rest that He gives us in knowing His own Son, Jesus.

  107. So may you be blessed today in your classes as they resume.

  108. And may we all be blessed in this.

  109. His day may be a real time of refreshment for us.

  110. Well, we give thanks to God.

  111. And we're going to share together now in the Lord's Prayer.

  112. And we'll just say that together.

  113. So we'll put our hands together and say the Lord's Prayer.

  114. Our Father which art in heaven.

  115. Hallowed be thy name.

  116. Thy kingdom come.

  117. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  118. Give us this day our daily bread.

  119. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

  120. And lead us not into temptation.

  121. But deliver us from evil.

  122. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever.

  123. Amen.

  124. We're going to sing again to God's praise in Psalm 5.

  125. And this is in the Scottish Psalter version.

  126. Page 203 of the Psalm book.

  127. Psalm 5 on page 203.

  128. We're going to sing from verse 1 to verse 7.

  129. Give ear unto my words, O Lord, my meditation way.

  130. Hear my loud cry, my King, my God.

  131. For I to thee will pray.

  132. So we'll sing these words to God.

  133. Psalm 5, verse 1 to 7.

    Psalms 5:1–7

  134. And we stand to sing.

  135. Amen.

  136. Amen.

  137. Amen.

  138. Amen.

  139. Amen.

  140. Amen.

  142. Amen.

  143. Amen.

  144. Give ear unto my words, O Lord, my meditation way.

  145. Hear my loud cry, my King, my God.

  146. For I to thee will pray.

  147. Lord, thou shalt early hear my voice.

  148. I early will direct my prayer to thee.

  149. And looking up, an answer will expect.

  150. For thou art not the God that doth in wickedness delight.

  151. Neither shall evil dwell with thee, nor fool stand in thy sight.

  152. All that ill-doers are the haste.

  153. God's hope that liars be.

  154. The bloody and deceitful man abhorred is by thee.

  155. But I into thy heart will come in thine abundant grace.

  156. And I will worship in thy fear toward thy holy place.

  157. Amen.

  158. Amen.

  159. Amen.

  160. Amen.

  161. Amen.

  162. Amen.

  163. Amen.

  164. Amen.

  165. Amen.

  166. We're going to read together in God's word now in the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy.

  167. Deuteronomy chapter 6.

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  168. Let me read the whole of this chapter.

  169. Deuteronomy chapter 6.

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  170. In the previous chapter, Moses has just given to the people of Israel the Ten Commandments.

  171. And they're about to enter into the Promised Land.

  172. They're preparing to go into the Promised Land.

  173. So he's given them these commandments.

  174. And now he is instructing them in how they are to live as they seek to go into this new land.

  175. So in chapter 6, we read these words.

  176. Now this is a commandment, the statutes and the rules that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you.

  177. That you may do them in the land to which you are going over.

  178. To possess it.

  179. That you may fear the Lord your God.

  180. You and your son and your son's son.

  181. By keeping all his statutes and his commandments.

  182. Which I command you all the days of your life.

  183. And that your days may be long.

  184. Hear therefore, O Israel.

  185. And be careful to do them.

  186. That it may go well with you.

  187. And that you may multiply greatly.

  188. As the Lord, the God of your fathers has promised you.

  189. In a land flowing with milk and honey.

  190. Hear, O Israel.

  191. The Lord our God.

  192. The Lord is one.

  193. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart.

  194. And with all your soul.

  195. And with all your might.

  196. And these words that I command you today.

  197. Shall be on your heart.

  198. You shall teach them diligently to your children.

  199. And shall talk of them when you sit in your house.

  200. And when you walk by the way.

  201. And when you lie down.

  202. And when you rise.

  203. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand.

  204. And they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.

  205. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house.

  206. And on your gates.

  207. And when the Lord your God brings you into the land.

  208. That he swore to your fathers.

  209. To Abraham.

  210. To Isaac.

  211. And to Jacob.

  212. To give you.

  213. With great and good cities.

  214. That you did not build.

  215. And houses full of good things.

  216. That you did not fill.

  217. And cisterns that you did not dig.

  218. And vineyards and olive trees.

  219. That you did not plant.

  220. And when you eat and are full.

  221. Then take care lest you forget the Lord.

  222. Who brought you out of the land of Egypt.

  223. Out of the house of slavery.

  224. It is the Lord your God you shall fear.

  225. Him you shall serve.

  226. And by his name you shall swear.

  227. You shall not go after other gods.

  228. The gods of the peoples who are around you.

  229. For the Lord your God in your midst is a jealous God.

  230. Lest the anger of the Lord your God be kindled against you.

  231. And he destroy you from the face of the earth.

  232. You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.

  233. As you tested him at Massa.

  234. You shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God.

  235. And the testimonies and his statutes which he has commanded you.

  236. And you shall do what is right.

  237. And good in the sight of the Lord.

  238. That it may go well with you.

  239. And that you may go in and take possession.

  240. Of the good land that the Lord swore to give your fathers.

  241. By thrusting out all your enemies from before you.

  242. As the Lord has promised.

  243. When your sons ask you in time to come.

  244. What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes.

  245. And the rules that the Lord our God has commanded you.

  246. Then you shall say to your son.

  247. We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt.

  248. And the Lord brought us out of Egypt.

  249. With a mighty hand.

  250. And the Lord showed signs and wonders.

  251. Great and grievous against Egypt.

  252. And against Pharaoh.

  253. And all his household before our eyes.

  254. And he brought us out from there.

  255. That he might bring us in.

  256. And give us the land that he swore to give to our fathers.

  257. And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes.

  258. To fear the Lord our God.

  259. For our good always.

  260. That he might preserve us alive.

  261. As we are this day.

  262. And it will be righteousness for us.

  263. If we are careful to do.

  264. All his commandments.

  265. Before the Lord our God.

  266. As he has commanded us.

  267. Amen.

  268. And may God bless that reading.

  269. From his word.

  270. We will again engage in prayer.

  271. Let us bow our heads in a word of prayer.

  272. Our Father in heaven.

  273. As we hear of the instructions.

  274. That you gave your people of old.

  275. They may seem instructions for a people.

  276. So long ago.

  277. And not relevant to ourselves.

  278. We may be think that in our own wisdom.

  279. That we have the knowledge to go forward.

  280. By our own understanding.

  281. Of the ways of this world.

  282. That we can build our own commandments.

  283. That we can find our own way.

  284. That we can do as we please.

  285. But in your word.

  286. We find that there is only one way.

  287. To live.

  288. And that that is according to your truth.

  289. And that your truth.

  290. Is a word that stands firm forever.

  291. That your word is relevant today.

  292. As it always is.

  293. It always will be.

  294. For it is a word that is able to give life.

  295. And to give blessing to your people.

  296. We thank you that in the midst of.

  297. A people who often failed you.

  298. As we read in the Old Testament.

  299. Who were distracted.

  300. Who listened to the wrong voices.

  301. Who went according to their own wisdom.

  302. That you still spoke to them.

  303. And called them back to yourself.

  304. And as we live in a day.

  305. That is so similar.

  306. A day when we have listened to the voices.

  307. Of this world.

  308. When we have gone our own paths.

  309. And had our own wisdom.

  310. As we saw it.

  311. We thank you that you are still a God who speaks.

  312. And a God who is still calling.

  313. A people back to yourself.

  314. And so may each of us hear your voice.

  315. And your word to us this day.

  316. Return to me.

  317. That I may return to you.

  318. May we seek your blessing over us.

  319. As a people.

  320. And that you would do us good.

  321. In these days.

  322. That you preserve us.

  323. You keep us.

  324. And it is only in your strength.

  325. That we go on.

  326. So help us to acknowledge you.

  327. And to give thanks to you.

  328. And to praise your name.

  329. That you are a God.

  330. Who is so faithful.

  331. We do thank you for this.

  332. Your day.

  333. We thank you Lord.

  334. For the blessings that are ours.

  335. We thank you for the abundance.

  336. Of good things.

  337. That we enjoy from your hand.

  338. We are richly blessed.

  339. In this past week.

  340. We give you thanks.

  341. For the communion season.

  342. We enjoyed together.

  343. For the encouragements.

  344. That were there.

  345. We give you thanks.

  346. For new members then.

  347. And also in the last few months.

  348. As we see them.

  349. In our intimation sheet today.

  350. We pray that you will bless them.

  351. Each one mentioned.

  352. That you will guard them.

  353. That you will uphold them.

  354. That you will use them Lord.

  355. In your kingdom.

  356. And in our midst.

  357. As a people here.

  358. We thank you for the way.

  359. You strengthen us in number.

  360. We thank you for the way.

  361. You strengthen us.

  362. In our faith.

  363. Through word and sacrament.

  364. We thank you for the way.

  365. That we are strengthened.

  366. In our fellowship.

  367. With one another.

  368. And we do pray your blessing.

  369. Upon the fellowship.

  370. Of your people here.

  371. That together.

  372. We will indeed encourage.

  373. One another.

  374. We thank you for all.

  375. The things that are resuming.

  376. In our midst.

  377. As a congregation.

  378. We pray your blessing.

  379. On the Sunday school.

  380. Once again.

  381. We give you thanks.

  382. For all the children.

  383. For the teachers.

  384. For the helpers.

  385. Your blessing.

  386. And peace be upon them.

  387. We thank you.

  388. For the youth fellowship.

  389. God willing to take place.

  390. This evening.

  391. We thank you Lord.

  392. For the young ones.

  393. Who are involved in that.

  394. Both in leading.

  395. And in coming along to it.

  396. And we pray your blessing.

  397. On us as we gather there.

  398. We thank you.

  399. For all that's going on.

  400. Through the week.

  401. With the toddler groups.

  402. For the prayer meetings.

  403. With the resumption.

  404. Of the over 55 group.

  405. To start soon.

  406. With the WFM.

  407. And so many other events.

  408. Going on Lord.

  409. We give you thanks.

  410. That you are a God.

  411. Who is giving us.

  412. The opportunities.

  413. For all of these things.

  414. Once again.

  415. And may you bless it.

  416. To us as a people.

  417. We give you thanks.

  418. To that in the midst.

  419. Of the sorrows.

  420. And sadness.

  421. Of this world.

  422. That you are a God.

  423. Who is compassionate.

  424. And kind.

  425. One who is able.

  426. To comfort.

  427. As only you can.

  428. And as a congregation.

  429. As once again.

  430. We have the sad news.

  431. In this past days.

  432. Of deaths in our midst.

  433. We give you thanks Lord.

  434. That you are a God.

  435. Who speaks.

  436. And who ministers.

  437. We pray for each family.

  438. Who has lost a loved one.

  439. We pray for our congregation.

  440. As we mourn the passing.

  441. Of people who are loved.

  442. By many here.

  443. Lord.

  444. And we pray that.

  445. In the days ahead.

  446. In services.

  447. To take place.

  448. Of worship.

  449. And of the funeral service.

  450. We ask your blessing.

  451. On all that is done.

  452. In your name.

  453. We look to our land.

  454. As well Lord.

  455. And we pray.

  456. Oh Lord.

  457. That you will guide us.

  458. By your wisdom.

  459. As we think of the week ahead.

  460. And the appointment.

  461. Of a new prime minister.

  462. To our nation.

  463. We pray that.

  464. Whoever it is.

  465. That is appointed.

  466. May be used by you.

  467. That they would bow the knee.

  468. Before you.

  469. That they would hear your voice.

  470. In the midst of all the other voices.

  471. That will clamor for attention.

  472. We pray for our land.

  473. Oh Lord.

  474. In the midst of all the different struggles.

  475. That we have.

  476. How we need you Lord.

  477. To pour our new spirit upon us.

  478. To come in a day of your power.

  479. To revive us.

  480. To bring us the peace.

  481. That only you can.

  482. We pray that.

  483. For our world as a whole.

  484. We thank you for those.

  485. Who go out.

  486. Into the midst of all the different lands.

  487. Of this world.

  488. Proclaiming your name.

  489. We thank you for Muriel.

  490. And pray for our own ministry.

  491. And pray your blessing on her.

  492. That you will uphold her.

  493. And keep her.

  494. And we thank you for opportunities.

  495. To meet with her online.

  496. And pray that that will be blessed.

  497. To each and every one of us.

  498. So we thank you Lord.

  499. That there is much to praise your name for.

  500. Above all Lord.

  501. We pray that.

  502. In this day.

  503. In this time of worship.

  504. And as we go forward.

  505. In your strength.

  506. That you will be our shepherd.

  507. That you will guide us Lord.

  508. And give us.

  509. From your living waters.

  510. To refresh our souls.

  511. And to give us.

  512. That quenching of our thirst.

  513. That we live in a dry parched land.

  514. As your word describes it so often.

  515. We thank you Lord.

  516. That there is refreshing showers.

  517. From your spirit.

  518. And from on high.

  519. So we pray Lord.

  520. Refresh us.

  521. Do us good.

  522. And continue with us.

  523. Throughout this day.

  524. Help us to do all.

  525. To your glory.

  526. The singing of your praise.

  527. The worship of your name.

  528. The reading of your word.

  529. And our meditation upon it.

  530. May it be blessed by you.

  531. And we ask all.

  532. Acknowledging our sins anew.

  533. Thankful for the forgiveness you offer.

  534. In Jesus Christ our Lord.

  535. In whose name we pray.

  536. Amen.

  537. Amen.

  538. We again sing to God's praise.

  539. Before we turn to the passage.

  540. We're going to look at.

  541. Singing in Psalm 127.

  542. Psalm 127.

  543. The singing Psalms.

  544. Version on page 171.

  545. Unless the Lord builds up the house.

  546. Its builders toil in vain.

  547. Unless he keeps the city safe.

  548. They vainly watch maintain.

  549. We'll sing the whole of this Psalm.

  550. To God's praise.

  551. Psalm 127.

  552. And we stand to sing.

  553. Amen.

  554. Unless the Lord builds up the house.

  555. It's builders toil in vain.

  556. Unless he keeps the city safe.

  557. They living watch in vain.

  558. In vain you rise before the dawn.

  559. And with our vainly keep.

  560. That you may toil for food to eat.

  561. He gives his love won't sleep.

  562. Sons are a precious heritage.

  563. A blessing from the Lord.

  564. The children that are born to us.

  565. The children that are born to us.

  566. Are truly history, Lord.

  567. Like our rose in a warrior's hand.

  568. Our children of one's youth.

  569. The man who's quivered full of them.

  570. The man who's quivered full of them.

  571. Is blessed by God in truth.

  572. Such men will not be put to shame.

  573. That will not be their fate.

  574. When they contend against their foes.

  575. Who faced them in the gate.

  576. Well, let's turn to our reading in Deuteronomy chapter 6.

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  577. We're thinking about the first nine verses of this chapter.

  578. We can read again at verse 4.

  579. And so it goes on.

  580. Normally, when you have a mass walk out in church.

  581. It wouldn't fill you with much enthusiasm.

  582. But today, looking on as the children walked out.

  583. It was great to see and encouraging to see so many of them.

  584. Going out through the various exits.

  585. It's great to see a hunger for parents to bring their children to Sunday school.

  586. To creche and to twinnies.

  587. It's great to see so many people of different ages coming together to worship God.

  588. Because that is the way that we are meant to live as a people.

  589. We are to be a people.

  590. Whatever age and stage we are at in life.

  591. That come and give thanks to God and praise to God for all his goodness to us.

  592. And we often speak in the place which we live as a sense of community.

  593. And in our islands, we do indeed enjoy that blessing of having a real sense of community.

  594. It's something that we hold dear to ourselves.

  595. A sense of belonging.

  596. A sense of knowing that maybe in our greatest times of need.

  597. That there are always people who will come and gather around us and help us in our times of need.

  598. We ask ourselves today, what does it mean to live in a community?

  599. And what kind of community are we?

  600. When we look around ourselves, we see that there are many different types of community that we can belong to.

  601. A community is often seen as a group of people who have a particular interest in mind.

  602. So even around us, we could have such a community as we often would say, a Gaelic community.

  603. We might have a real sense of being a part of a musical community around us.

  604. Many people have these kinds of interests.

  605. We speak about the scientific community and all kinds of different interests that we have.

  606. But you find with these kinds of communities that there's almost an exclusiveness to them.

  607. You have to have an interest in these things or a desire for these things to be part of that community

  608. and to feel a real sense of belonging.

  609. But there's another kind of community that is even more precious to us.

  610. We have all these kinds of communities around us.

  611. But the greatest kind of community that we enjoy and are part of here is to be a community of God's people.

  612. To have that blessing of being together around God's word, young and old alike.

  613. There being a oneness and a bond that exists between us that has its foundation in Christ our Lord.

  614. And to have that desire to bring ourselves together as families, as individuals,

  615. but collectively coming as a community of God's people, praying together,

  616. worshipping together, and seeking God's good on us as a people.

  617. So what kind of community then does God want us to be?

  618. As we come together to worship, we are not to be an exclusive kind of group.

  619. We are not to be accepting only of a certain kind of people.

  620. But we are to be very much an inclusive community.

  621. That we would feel welcome.

  622. That we would feel at home.

  623. That we would feel the presence of a place of peace in our midst

  624. as we gather together to worship God.

  625. Young, old, middle-aged, whatever our background, wherever we're from.

  626. That we would find a real sense of oneness as a community under God's word.

  627. And above all, that we would have God and his word in our midst as a people.

  628. That is what we have here in the book of Deuteronomy.

  629. That's what we have in the passage before us today.

  630. And today as we think of the Sunday school resuming,

  631. as we see so many young ones coming out,

  632. is to think not just that we are a people who,

  633. yes, we are blessed by having young ones and seeing them here.

  634. That we feel also that we are all part of this community together.

  635. And to see our own responsibility towards our young ones

  636. and towards one another.

  637. And our responsibility towards God.

  638. To truly be his community.

  639. And as we look at this passage today,

  640. we see what Moses is instructing the children of Israel.

  641. To be as a community.

  642. And how that they are to live together as one

  643. with God at the heart of their community.

  644. Somebody once said,

  645. what forms and sustains a community

  646. isn't a commitment to community per se,

  647. but a commitment to the word.

  648. So it's not just to feel a commitment to the people around us,

  649. but to have that foundation of a commitment to the word

  650. that gives us that sense of belonging

  651. and that sense of community.

  652. Because as Moses is speaking to the children of Israel here,

  653. he is giving them a warning too.

  654. This is how you are to live.

  655. This is how you will find blessing.

  656. But he gives them a ringing warning in their ears as well.

  657. And you see that in verse 11 and 12.

  658. He's saying there,

  659. when you're going into this land,

  660. remember it's not a city you built yourselves.

  661. It has houses full of all good things

  662. that you did not fill,

  663. and cisterns that you did not dig,

  664. and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant.

  665. There's all of these things.

  666. But he says,

  667. when you eat and are full,

  668. then take care lest you forget the Lord.

  669. The Lord, who he says,

  670. brought you out of the land of Egypt,

  671. out of the house of slavery.

  672. Again, we think of our own day,

  673. we have so much.

  674. And that warning rings through in our ears.

  675. Let us be careful that as a community of God's people,

  676. we do not forget the Lord.

  677. So I want us to think of three things

  678. that we have in this passage

  679. that gives us a sense

  680. of the kind of community that we are to be.

  681. The first thing is

  682. that we are to be a listening community.

  683. The second thing is

  684. we are to be a loving community.

  685. And the third thing is

  686. we are to be a living community.

  687. So the first thing is

  688. we are to be a listening community.

  689. How can we obey God's word?

  690. How can we live as God's community

  691. if we do not listen

  692. to what he is saying to us,

  693. if we do not heed the instruction of his word?

  694. So there in verse four,

  695. Moses is saying to the people,

  696. hear, O Israel.

  697. Listen, O Israel,

  698. to what I am saying to you.

  699. This is the beginning of God's dealing with the people

  700. and telling them,

  701. as you go into this land,

  702. this is one of the first things you must do.

  703. You must listen to my word.

  704. Listen to what I am saying to you.

  705. And why is this?

  706. Well, God knows the kind of place

  707. that they are going into.

  708. He knows the land in which they are going into

  709. and he knows the temptations

  710. that there will be around them.

  711. They are going to enter into a land

  712. that already has various kinds of communities.

  713. Communities that have various and many gods.

  714. And as God's children go into this land,

  715. they are going to be confronted

  716. with these other communities.

  717. They are going to hear

  718. what these other communities are saying to them

  719. and to listen to them talking about their gods

  720. and their ways

  721. and the way that they would seek

  722. to move them towards living themselves.

  723. They are going to hear much advice.

  724. And in many ways,

  725. God knows the temptation

  726. is going to be there for them.

  727. To listen to this,

  728. it's going to seem so much better and easier

  729. than the God that they have had

  730. and listened to in the past.

  731. But God is saying to them,

  732. listen,

  733. the Lord,

  734. our God,

  735. the Lord is one.

  736. So they are to listen

  737. to what God is saying.

  738. And as a people today,

  739. the same instruction rings through to ourselves.

  740. How often in your life do you hear advice?

  741. How often in your life are you given instruction

  742. and told that this is what you are to do?

  743. This is how you are to live.

  744. This is what you are to believe.

  745. We're flooded day by day with information.

  746. It comes at us thick and fast.

  747. There's so many voices

  748. trying to vie for our attention,

  749. telling us that this is what we need to hear.

  750. This is what we need to listen to.

  751. It's constant.

  752. But what or who is it

  753. that we are listening to ourselves?

  754. We can easily become stressed

  755. by all that we hear.

  756. Being pulled in so many different

  757. kinds of directions.

  758. And that's the challenges

  759. that the children of Israel were going to face.

  760. That's the temptations

  761. that they were going to be confronted with constantly.

  762. So God is saying to his community,

  763. to his people,

  764. listen first and foremost

  765. to what I am saying.

  766. Listen to my voice.

  767. Hear what I am saying to you.

  768. And that is what we are to do today

  769. ourselves as well.

  770. In the midst of everything,

  771. all the information

  772. that's constantly flowing our way,

  773. we as a people are to listen

  774. to what God is saying to us.

  775. To listen to what his word

  776. is saying to us.

  777. To put our trust in his word.

  778. To put our trust

  779. in his son, Christ Jesus,

  780. who is the word

  781. that became flesh

  782. and dwelt among us.

  783. We have this precious resource

  784. before us

  785. to enable us

  786. as a community,

  787. a community of God's people,

  788. to listen

  789. to what he is saying.

  790. The Psalm,

  791. Psalm 34

  792. that we sung,

  793. it says,

  794. Come here, my children,

  795. gather round

  796. and listen

  797. to my word

  798. and I will help you

  799. understand

  800. how you may fear

  801. the Lord.

  802. There is instruction

  803. there for us

  804. and it is to come

  805. and to listen.

  806. But are you too busy

  807. to listen?

  808. Are you too busy

  809. to be still

  810. for a moment

  811. and listen

  812. to what God

  813. is saying to us?

  814. Even as God's people

  815. we can become so busy

  816. that we don't listen

  817. to what God

  818. is saying to us.

  819. We don't make time

  820. to hear what God

  821. is saying to us.

  822. Charles Swindle

  823. is a famous

  824. Christian writer.

  825. He's written many books.

  826. He wrote a book

  827. called

  828. Stress Fractures.

  829. And in that book

  830. he's speaking

  831. about the busyness

  832. of his own life.

  833. and the effect

  834. it had on him.

  835. And he says

  836. at one point

  837. in that book

  838. that he had

  839. far too many

  840. commitments

  841. in his life.

  842. He was doing

  843. too much.

  844. He was becoming

  845. nervous and tense

  846. about everything.

  847. And this was affecting

  848. his life

  849. at home.

  850. He was saying

  851. I was snapping

  852. at my wife

  853. and her children.

  854. I was choking

  855. down my food

  856. at mealtimes.

  857. Feeling irritated

  858. at those

  859. unexpected interruptions

  860. through the day.

  861. Before long

  862. he says

  863. things around

  864. our home

  865. started to reflect

  866. the pattern

  867. of my life.

  868. That was just

  869. hurry,

  870. hurry,

  871. hurry.

  872. He says

  873. it was becoming

  874. unbearable.

  875. But then

  876. something happened

  877. that left

  878. an impression

  879. on him.

  880. He says

  881. I distinctly

  882. remember

  883. after supper

  884. one evening

  885. the words

  886. of our younger

  887. daughter

  888. Colleen.

  889. she wanted

  890. to tell me

  891. something

  892. important.

  893. Something that

  894. had happened

  895. to her

  896. in school

  897. that day.

  898. And so

  899. she started

  900. speaking

  901. hurriedly

  902. and she said

  903. Daddy

  904. I want to

  905. tell you

  906. something

  907. and I'll

  908. tell you

  909. really fast.

  910. And suddenly

  911. it dawned

  912. on Charles

  913. Wendell.

  914. He realised

  915. her frustration

  916. that everyone

  917. was in the

  918. household

  919. was becoming

  920. so fast

  921. paced

  922. everything

  923. had to

  924. be rushed.

  925. And he

  926. stopped

  927. and he

  928. answered

  929. and said

  930. to her

  931. honey

  932. you can

  933. tell me

  934. and you

  935. don't have

  936. to tell

  937. me

  938. really fast.

  939. Say it

  940. slowly.

  941. But it was

  942. her response

  943. then that

  944. really hit

  945. home to

  946. him.

  947. She said

  948. then listen

  949. slowly.

  950. Are we

  951. so rushed

  952. in our

  953. life today

  954. that

  955. everything

  956. needs to

  957. be done

  958. quickly.

  959. Even

  960. our

  961. listening

  962. has got

  963. to be

  964. done

  965. quickly

  966. because

  967. we've

  968. got so

  969. many other

  970. things to

  971. do.

  972. Our

  973. listening

  974. to God's

  975. word

  976. our

  977. making

  978. time

  979. for him

  980. it's

  981. becoming

  982. a rush.

  983. As

  984. God's

  985. community

  986. we are

  987. to engage

  988. in listening

  989. to him

  990. and making

  991. time

  992. to listen

  993. to him.

  994. As we

  995. gather

  996. round

  997. God's

  998. word we

  999. find that

  1000. he's

  1001. talking

  1002. to every

  1003. one of

  1004. us

  1005. together

  1006. young

  1007. and old

  1008. all of

  1009. us

  1010. together

  1011. to come

  1012. and listen

  1013. to what

  1014. God is

  1015. saying

  1016. to us.

  1017. Sometimes

  1018. we just

  1019. have to

  1020. heed

  1021. that

  1022. advice

  1023. ourselves

  1024. that we

  1025. listen

  1026. slowly

  1027. that we

  1028. make

  1029. time

  1030. for God.

  1031. So let

  1032. us be

  1033. a

  1034. listening

  1035. community

  1036. of God's

  1037. people.

  1038. Listening

  1039. to each

  1040. other

  1041. listening

  1042. to our

  1043. children

  1044. listening

  1045. to young

  1046. and old

  1047. alike

  1048. making

  1049. time

  1050. for one

  1051. another

  1052. but above

  1053. all

  1054. listening

  1055. to God

  1056. and what

  1057. his word

  1058. is saying

  1059. to us.

  1060. The second

  1061. thing we see

  1062. here is that

  1063. we are to be

  1064. a loving

  1065. community.

  1066. So as you

  1067. go through

  1068. these verses

  1069. we find that

  1070. following the

  1071. first part

  1072. which is to

  1073. listen and

  1074. to hear

  1075. what God

  1076. is saying

  1077. to us

  1078. we are also

  1079. to be

  1080. challenged

  1081. by what

  1082. we hear.

  1083. We are not

  1084. just to

  1085. hear and

  1086. put it

  1087. away.

  1088. We are to

  1089. listen and

  1090. seek understanding

  1091. in what God

  1092. is saying

  1093. to us.

  1094. And the

  1095. challenges

  1096. there for us

  1097. is that if

  1098. we want to

  1099. be a

  1100. community

  1101. of God's

  1102. people

  1103. we have

  1104. to ask

  1105. ourselves

  1106. well where

  1107. is our

  1108. heart's

  1109. desire

  1110. directed.

  1111. If we

  1112. come to

  1113. see that

  1114. God is

  1115. one and

  1116. there is

  1117. no other

  1118. God

  1119. and if

  1120. we are

  1121. listening to

  1122. him

  1123. then what

  1124. are we

  1125. to do

  1126. with that?

  1127. Well he

  1128. goes on

  1129. here in

  1130. verse 5

  1131. to give

  1132. us

  1133. instruction.

  1134. He says

  1135. you shall

  1136. love the

  1137. Lord your

  1138. God with

  1139. all your

  1140. heart and

  1141. with all

  1142. your soul

  1143. and with

  1144. all your

  1145. might.

  1146. And these

  1147. words that I

  1148. command you

  1149. today shall

  1150. be on

  1151. your heart.

  1152. There is

  1153. instruction

  1154. there for us

  1155. we are to

  1156. be a

  1157. loving

  1158. people.

  1159. That we

  1160. are to

  1161. listen to

  1162. what God

  1163. is saying

  1164. to us

  1165. but that

  1166. we are

  1167. also to

  1168. put that

  1169. into practice

  1170. in the sense

  1171. of being

  1172. affected by

  1173. what we are

  1174. hearing.

  1175. As we

  1176. make time

  1177. to listen

  1178. to God

  1179. as we

  1180. hear what

  1181. he is

  1182. saying to

  1183. us

  1184. as he

  1185. opens

  1186. our ears

  1187. and opens

  1188. our heart

  1189. what is

  1190. that doing

  1191. to us?

  1192. Is our

  1193. heart

  1194. becoming

  1195. hard?

  1196. Are we

  1197. pushing

  1198. him away?

  1199. Or are we

  1200. listening and

  1201. seeking

  1202. understanding

  1203. through

  1204. prayerfully

  1205. approaching

  1206. him?

  1207. Moses is

  1208. saying to

  1209. the children

  1210. of Israel

  1211. here you

  1212. shall love

  1213. the Lord

  1214. your God

  1215. with all

  1216. your heart.

  1217. And the

  1218. question for

  1219. us is do

  1220. we love

  1221. the Lord

  1222. and especially

  1223. do we love

  1224. the Lord

  1225. with all

  1226. our heart?

  1227. Somebody

  1228. once said

  1229. the first

  1230. duty of

  1231. every soul

  1232. is to

  1233. find not

  1234. its freedom

  1235. but its

  1236. master.

  1237. Not to

  1238. find our

  1239. freedom

  1240. but to

  1241. find our

  1242. master.

  1243. And so

  1244. who is it

  1245. or what

  1246. is it

  1247. that you

  1248. love most

  1249. in this

  1250. life?

  1251. Who or

  1252. what is

  1253. the master

  1254. the ruler

  1255. of your

  1256. life?

  1257. If we

  1258. are to be

  1259. a community

  1260. of God's

  1261. people

  1262. if we

  1263. are to

  1264. listen

  1265. to his

  1266. word

  1267. then we

  1268. are to

  1269. see that

  1270. our love

  1271. should be

  1272. directed

  1273. towards God

  1274. first and

  1275. foremost.

  1276. if we

  1277. were to

  1278. ask

  1279. today

  1280. how does

  1281. that

  1282. congregation

  1283. grow in

  1284. godliness?

  1285. How do we

  1286. individually

  1287. grow in

  1288. godliness?

  1289. By listening

  1290. and recognizing

  1291. that God

  1292. is worth

  1293. all our

  1294. love

  1295. and that we

  1296. can love

  1297. only because

  1298. he first

  1299. loved us

  1300. and gave

  1301. himself

  1302. for us.

  1303. that we

  1304. would be

  1305. moved by

  1306. the love

  1307. of God

  1308. for us.

  1309. To love

  1310. him with

  1311. all our

  1312. heart.

  1313. To love

  1314. our families.

  1315. To love

  1316. our community.

  1317. To love

  1318. our young

  1319. people.

  1320. To love

  1321. our old

  1322. people.

  1323. That the

  1324. love of

  1325. God would

  1326. transcend

  1327. everything

  1328. that we

  1329. seek to

  1330. do for

  1331. him.

  1332. In the

  1333. New

  1334. Testament

  1335. as Jesus

  1336. was teaching

  1337. his people

  1338. around him

  1339. one person

  1340. came to

  1341. him and

  1342. said

  1343. teacher

  1344. which is

  1345. the greatest

  1346. commandment

  1347. in the

  1348. law.

  1349. And where

  1350. did Jesus

  1351. take them

  1352. for that

  1353. greatest

  1354. commandment?

  1355. He took

  1356. them to

  1357. these words

  1358. that we

  1359. have in

  1360. Deuteronomy.

  1361. Jesus

  1362. said to

  1363. him you

  1364. shall love

  1365. the Lord

  1366. your God

  1367. with all

  1368. your heart

  1369. with all

  1370. your soul

  1371. and with

  1372. all your

  1373. mind.

  1374. This is

  1375. the great

  1376. and first

  1377. commandment

  1378. and a

  1379. second is

  1380. like it.

  1381. You shall

  1382. love your

  1383. neighbor as

  1384. yourself.

  1385. a loving

  1386. community

  1387. as the

  1388. Lord at

  1389. his heart

  1390. and in

  1391. our heart

  1392. and as

  1393. we love

  1394. the Lord

  1395. with all

  1396. our heart

  1397. that leads

  1398. to us

  1399. loving our

  1400. neighbor as

  1401. ourself.

  1402. Having a

  1403. desire and a

  1404. hunger that

  1405. our community

  1406. be one

  1407. but in the

  1408. sense that we

  1409. would also see

  1410. many others

  1411. coming into

  1412. this community

  1413. a belonging

  1414. and finding

  1415. belonging

  1416. in God

  1417. and in

  1418. his son

  1419. Christ

  1420. Jesus.

  1421. Moses is

  1422. telling his

  1423. people here

  1424. he's instructing

  1425. them in

  1426. discipleship if

  1427. you like.

  1428. That's what we

  1429. would call it

  1430. today.

  1431. We disciple

  1432. one another.

  1433. We disciple

  1434. individuals.

  1435. We disciple

  1436. ourselves

  1437. collectively.

  1438. He is

  1439. speaking to

  1440. the community

  1441. here in

  1442. Moses'

  1443. day and

  1444. saying disciple

  1445. one another.

  1446. Love one

  1447. another.

  1448. Love the

  1449. Lord and

  1450. do good to

  1451. each other.

  1452. And so

  1453. today he's

  1454. instructing us

  1455. in the same

  1456. way too.

  1457. To disciple,

  1458. to encourage

  1459. one another,

  1460. to pray for

  1461. one another,

  1462. to be there

  1463. for one

  1464. another.

  1465. All of

  1466. these things.

  1467. It's not

  1468. just thinking

  1469. biblically but

  1470. acting biblically.

  1471. He says

  1472. here these

  1473. are the

  1474. commands that

  1475. you are to

  1476. do.

  1477. These are

  1478. the things

  1479. that you

  1480. are to do.

  1481. So it's

  1482. not just a

  1483. case of

  1484. simply

  1485. listening to

  1486. these

  1487. commandments.

  1488. It's not

  1489. just a

  1490. case that

  1491. you know

  1492. these

  1493. commandments.

  1494. It's not

  1495. a case that

  1496. you can

  1497. recite

  1498. these

  1499. commandments

  1500. or that

  1501. even you

  1502. accept

  1503. these

  1504. commandments.

  1505. It's

  1506. that you

  1507. do

  1508. these

  1509. commandments.

  1510. That you

  1511. put these

  1512. things

  1513. into

  1514. practice.

  1515. Martin

  1516. Luther once

  1517. said,

  1518. a religion

  1519. that gives

  1520. nothing,

  1521. costs

  1522. nothing,

  1523. and suffers

  1524. nothing is

  1525. worth

  1526. nothing.

  1527. So what

  1528. is our

  1529. community

  1530. like?

  1531. Is it a

  1532. community

  1533. that's willing

  1534. to give?

  1535. Is it a

  1536. community that's

  1537. willing to

  1538. bear a

  1539. cost?

  1540. Is it a

  1541. community that's

  1542. willing to

  1543. suffer?

  1544. Because if

  1545. we're not,

  1546. we're worth

  1547. nothing.

  1548. So God's

  1549. word challenges

  1550. us to do

  1551. as he

  1552. commands,

  1553. to be

  1554. a loving

  1555. community,

  1556. loving the

  1557. Lord and

  1558. loving our

  1559. neighbor.

  1560. The final

  1561. thing I want

  1562. us to take

  1563. from this

  1564. is that we

  1565. are to be

  1566. a living

  1567. community.

  1568. If we are

  1569. called to be

  1570. a people who

  1571. hear these

  1572. things,

  1573. and if we are

  1574. called to be

  1575. a people who

  1576. love the

  1577. Lord with

  1578. all our

  1579. heart,

  1580. we have to

  1581. leave it with

  1582. this,

  1583. what are we

  1584. going to

  1585. do with

  1586. that?

  1587. What will

  1588. we do

  1589. with that?

  1590. Surely it's

  1591. to make sure

  1592. that we are

  1593. practicing these

  1594. things,

  1595. not just on

  1596. a Sunday,

  1597. not just in

  1598. our time of

  1599. worship,

  1600. not just in

  1601. bringing our

  1602. children to

  1603. Sunday school

  1604. and that's

  1605. that box

  1606. checked for

  1607. the week,

  1608. but together

  1609. actively living

  1610. for God,

  1611. instructing our

  1612. children,

  1613. encouraging them,

  1614. discipling and

  1615. helping one

  1616. another,

  1617. being in

  1618. fellowship with

  1619. one another,

  1620. worshipping

  1621. throughout the

  1622. week,

  1623. living together

  1624. in a sense

  1625. of being

  1626. active in

  1627. every way

  1628. we can,

  1629. prayerfully,

  1630. practically.

  1631. We all have

  1632. a part to

  1633. play,

  1634. every one

  1635. of us.

  1636. It doesn't

  1637. matter where

  1638. we are in

  1639. life,

  1640. it doesn't

  1641. matter even

  1642. if we're not

  1643. able to come

  1644. out as we

  1645. once did.

  1646. Maybe there's

  1647. those tuning

  1648. in online and

  1649. you maybe

  1650. don't feel

  1651. you belong to

  1652. this community,

  1653. you do,

  1654. and you have

  1655. an active

  1656. part to

  1657. play in

  1658. this community

  1659. as you

  1660. pray for

  1661. it,

  1662. as you

  1663. remember

  1664. different

  1665. people,

  1666. as we

  1667. all engage

  1668. together,

  1669. we become

  1670. a living

  1671. community for

  1672. Christ,

  1673. showing forth

  1674. his love

  1675. towards those

  1676. around us.

  1677. Paul,

  1678. as he wrote

  1679. to the church

  1680. at Philippi,

  1681. he instructed

  1682. them to live

  1683. in this way.

  1684. He says in

  1685. chapter 4,

  1686. verse 8,

  1687. finally,

  1688. brothers,

  1689. whatever is

  1690. true,

  1691. whatever is

  1692. honorable,

  1693. whatever is

  1694. just,

  1695. whatever is

  1696. pure,

  1697. whatever is

  1698. lovely,

  1699. whatever is

  1700. commendable,

  1701. if there is

  1702. any excellence,

  1703. if there is

  1704. anything worthy

  1705. of praise,

  1706. think about

  1707. these things.

  1708. And what you

  1709. have learned

  1710. and received

  1711. and heard

  1712. and seen

  1713. in me,

  1714. practice

  1715. these things.

  1716. Practice

  1717. these things.

  1718. And he

  1719. says the

  1720. God of

  1721. peace

  1722. will be

  1723. with you.

  1724. That is

  1725. a promise

  1726. that the

  1727. children of

  1728. Israel had

  1729. from God

  1730. here in

  1731. Deuteronomy

  1732. 6.

  1733. He says

  1734. to them

  1735. that it

  1736. would go

  1737. well

  1738. with you.

  1739. He speaks

  1740. here about

  1741. teaching

  1742. diligently

  1743. the children,

  1744. speaking about

  1745. these things

  1746. as you sit

  1747. in your

  1748. house,

  1749. when you

  1750. walk in

  1751. the way,

  1752. when you

  1753. lie down,

  1754. when you

  1755. rise.

  1756. You shall

  1757. bind these

  1758. words as

  1759. signs on

  1760. your hand.

  1761. There shall

  1762. be as

  1763. frontlets

  1764. between

  1765. your eyes.

  1766. You shall

  1767. write them

  1768. in your

  1769. doorposts

  1770. and in

  1771. your gates.

  1772. And all

  1773. of this

  1774. is so

  1775. that it

  1776. may go

  1777. well

  1778. with them.

  1779. Practice

  1780. these things.

  1781. That is

  1782. what we

  1783. are to

  1784. do as

  1785. a people

  1786. as well.

  1787. We are

  1788. given

  1789. these

  1790. instructions

  1791. as how

  1792. we are

  1793. to live

  1794. for God,

  1795. to practice,

  1796. to teach,

  1797. to talk,

  1798. to bind,

  1799. to write.

  1800. to be

  1801. a living

  1802. and a

  1803. learning

  1804. community

  1805. together,

  1806. a people

  1807. who know

  1808. God

  1809. and love

  1810. God,

  1811. and show

  1812. that in

  1813. our practice

  1814. in how

  1815. we live.

  1816. Today it's

  1817. encouraging

  1818. that the

  1819. Sunday school

  1820. starts and

  1821. to see so

  1822. many coming,

  1823. but this

  1824. isn't just a

  1825. message of

  1826. how to

  1827. parent and

  1828. to teach

  1829. our children.

  1830. This

  1831. isn't

  1832. Moses giving

  1833. instruction

  1834. here.

  1835. This is how

  1836. you deal

  1837. with your

  1838. young ones

  1839. and that's

  1840. all.

  1841. It's a

  1842. whole

  1843. community

  1844. of God's

  1845. people

  1846. living

  1847. together

  1848. as one,

  1849. worshipping

  1850. together

  1851. as one.

  1852. Everything

  1853. that we

  1854. do,

  1855. we do

  1856. for the

  1857. glory

  1858. of God.

  1859. So may

  1860. it be

  1861. that we

  1862. seek to

  1863. do it

  1864. all together

  1865. for His

  1866. glory.

  1867. What's

  1868. your

  1869. greatest

  1870. accomplishment

  1871. in life?

  1872. As you

  1873. look back

  1874. over your

  1875. life,

  1876. what's

  1877. your

  1878. greatest

  1879. accomplishment?

  1880. It's a

  1881. question that

  1882. the former

  1883. President of

  1884. the United

  1885. States,

  1886. George Bush

  1887. Senior,

  1888. was asked

  1889. once.

  1890. And he

  1891. had done

  1892. many things

  1893. in his

  1894. life.

  1895. There are

  1896. many things

  1897. that he

  1898. could have

  1899. maybe said,

  1900. well this

  1901. is the

  1902. greatest

  1903. accomplishment

  1904. I see

  1905. in my

  1906. life.

  1907. He had

  1908. been a

  1909. Navy

  1910. pilot in

  1911. the Second

  1912. World War.

  1913. He had

  1914. been a

  1915. vice

  1916. president

  1917. to

  1918. Ronald

  1919. Reagan

  1920. for eight

  1921. years.

  1922. He was

  1923. president

  1924. himself.

  1925. He could

  1926. have spoken

  1927. of his

  1928. time as

  1929. the head

  1930. of the

  1931. CIA.

  1932. He could

  1933. have

  1934. mentioned

  1935. so many

  1936. different

  1937. things that

  1938. he had

  1939. done in

  1940. his life.

  1941. But you

  1942. know what

  1943. he answered

  1944. when he

  1945. was asked

  1946. that question,

  1947. what is

  1948. your

  1949. greatest

  1950. accomplishment

  1951. in life?

  1952. He said,

  1953. my greatest

  1954. accomplishment

  1955. is that my

  1956. children still

  1957. come to

  1958. see me.

  1959. He had

  1960. done all

  1961. these things

  1962. in his

  1963. life,

  1964. but it

  1965. hadn't

  1966. affected the

  1967. fact that

  1968. his children

  1969. could still

  1970. come to

  1971. speak to

  1972. him.

  1973. That means

  1974. making

  1975. time.

  1976. And for

  1977. ourselves,

  1978. what would

  1979. be our

  1980. greatest

  1981. accomplishment?

  1982. We can

  1983. maybe achieve

  1984. so much

  1985. in life,

  1986. but our

  1987. greatest

  1988. accomplishment

  1989. would surely

  1990. be that

  1991. we have

  1992. time for

  1993. our

  1994. children,

  1995. time for

  1996. our

  1997. families,

  1998. time for

  1999. ourselves as

  2000. a community

  2001. of God's

  2002. people,

  2003. time for

  2004. each other,

  2005. but above

  2006. all,

  2007. time for

  2008. God.

  2009. That we

  2010. don't become

  2011. so busy

  2012. and so

  2013. rushed in

  2014. life,

  2015. that we

  2016. start to

  2017. listen to

  2018. all the

  2019. voices that

  2020. are speaking

  2021. around us,

  2022. that this

  2023. is what we

  2024. need,

  2025. but that we

  2026. would listen

  2027. to God,

  2028. listen to

  2029. what he

  2030. is saying,

  2031. to do as

  2032. he commands,

  2033. to love

  2034. him with

  2035. all our

  2036. hearts,

  2037. and to

  2038. live in

  2039. fellowship

  2040. for him

  2041. with one

  2042. another,

  2043. young,

  2044. old,

  2045. middle-aged,

  2046. that we

  2047. would be the

  2048. community of

  2049. God that

  2050. he would

  2051. want us

  2052. to be,

  2053. and to

  2054. reflect his

  2055. love to

  2056. those around

  2057. us.

  2058. So may

  2059. God help

  2060. us to be

  2061. the community

  2062. that he

  2063. longs for

  2064. his people

  2065. to be,

  2066. a listening

  2067. community,

  2068. a loving

  2069. community,

  2070. and a

  2071. living

  2072. community

  2073. for him.

  2074. Let us

  2075. pray.

  2076. Our

  2077. Father in

  2078. heaven,

  2079. we do

  2080. pray that

  2081. in our

  2082. weaknesses

  2083. and in

  2084. our

  2085. temptations

  2086. to listen

  2087. to all

  2088. the wrong

  2089. voices

  2090. around us,

  2091. that you

  2092. will help

  2093. us in

  2094. our hearts

  2095. to love

  2096. you and

  2097. to listen

  2098. to you

  2099. and to

  2100. live for

  2101. you with

  2102. all our

  2103. being.

  2104. Lord,

  2105. teach us

  2106. your ways

  2107. and show

  2108. us your

  2109. paths,

  2110. we pray,

  2111. for we

  2112. ask it

  2113. all in

  2114. your

  2115. precious

  2116. name.

  2117. Amen.

  2118. We're

  2119. going to

  2120. conclude by

  2121. singing to

  2122. God's

  2123. praise in

  2124. Psalm 133.

  2125. Let's

  2126. sing

  2127. Psalms

  2128. version.

  2129. Psalm 133,

  2130. the sing

  2131. Psalms

  2132. version on

  2133. page 175.

  2134. It's

  2135. maybe a

  2136. familiar

  2137. Psalm 2

  2138. as it

  2139. speaks of

  2140. the blessing

  2141. that there

  2142. is in

  2143. unity and

  2144. the blessing

  2145. that we

  2146. seek from

  2147. God.

  2148. How

  2149. excellent a

  2150. thing it

  2151. is,

  2152. how pleasant

  2153. and how

  2154. good,

  2155. when

  2156. brothers

  2157. dwell in

  2158. unity and

  2159. live as

  2160. brothers

  2161. should.

  2162. we'll

  2163. sing the

  2164. whole

  2165. of the

  2166. Psalm

  2167. to

  2168. God's

  2169. praise and

  2170. we stand

  2171. to sing.

  2172. How

  2173. excellent

  2174. a

  2175. thing

  2176. it

  2177. is,

  2178. how

  2179. pleasant

  2180. and

  2181. how

  2182. good,

  2183. when

  2184. brothers

  2185. dwell in

  2186. unity and

  2187. live as

  2188. brothers

  2189. should.

  2190. For it is

  2191. like the

  2192. precious

  2193. heart,

  2194. for

  2195. the

  2196. heart,

  2197. the

  2198. hero's

  2199. head,

  2200. that

  2201. running

  2202. over

  2203. down

  2204. his

  2205. fear,

  2206. upon

  2207. his

  2208. color

  2209. spread,

  2210. like

  2211. care,

  2212. most

  2213. view,

  2214. upon

  2215. the

  2216. hill,

  2217. hold

  2218. high

  2219. on

  2220. it

  2221. he

  2222. stands,

  2223. the

  2224. Lord

  2225. bestows

  2226. his

  2227. blessing

  2228. there,

  2229. the

  2230. light

  2231. of

  2232. life

  2233. that

  2234. never

  2235. ends.

  2236. If you

  2237. allow me a

2238. moment to go to the main door after the benediction, we'll close with the benediction.

2239. Now may grace, mercy and peace from God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit rest upon and abide with you all now and forevermore. Amen.

  2240. Thank you.
