  1. We're reading in Philippians chapter 3.

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  2. So our time we're going to look at the first three verses here in this chapter.

  3. Philippians chapter 3, again we read at verse 1.

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  4. Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord.

  5. To write the same things to you is no trouble to me and is safe for you.

  6. Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers,

  7. look out for those who mutilate the flesh.

  8. For we are the real circumcision who worship by the Spirit of God

  9. and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh.

  10. Are you someone who is easily distracted in these times when there's so much going on around us

  11. and our television screens are full of what's happening around our land?

  12. We can maybe think to ourselves, well just before I go and sit and read my Bible,

  13. go and have my own quiet time, just for a few moments switch on the telly

  14. and just see what's happening now.

  15. Only an hour later, an hour and a half later, you're still sitting there watching what's happening.

  16. It can happen so easily in our lives, not just when there's some major incident going on,

  17. some major event, but day after day we can easily be distracted

  18. from the main thing that we should be doing.

  19. And as we read in the book of Philippians,

  20. we read Paul writing to a people and to a congregation of God's people

  21. who were often in danger of being distracted by the things that were going on around them.

  22. And what he's doing is he's writing in a real pastoral way,

  23. just bringing them back to what they are meant to be doing

  24. and where their focus is meant to be.

  25. That they are to be a people who rejoice in the Lord.

  26. It's a recurring theme throughout this letter,

  27. the joy of the Lord and the fact that we are to rejoice in the Lord.

  28. So you find him saying again and again, this is what we are to be doing.

  29. Now as you look at the beginning of chapter 3 here,

  30. we're in the middle, very center point of the letter.

  31. It's halfway through the letter in terms of the chapters as they are laid out before us.

  32. But you see, Paul begins chapter 3 by saying,

  33. finally, my brothers.

  34. It's maybe like a bit like a minister saying in conclusion,

  35. and you think to yourself, well, he's going to be finished early tonight.

  36. But then he goes on and repeats everything that he said before.

  37. And he goes on for about the same amount of time again.

  38. Is that what Paul is doing here?

  39. Is he just saying finally, but then just going on to repeat himself

  40. with actually no real gain, nothing to be gained or no purpose in it?

  41. Well, it's not at all.

  42. Although he covers the points again,

  43. he does so in a way where he's giving even more insight

  44. to what the people are to be doing,

  45. even more insight into the Lord that they are worshiping,

  46. even more insight into the glory that there is in Christ

  47. and the way that they are to live.

  48. It's not just a finally in terms of we're nearly there.

  49. It's like a finally in sense of it's just pause for a moment

  50. and reflect on what we've heard already

  51. before we go on and look at it again in even more depth.

  52. There is repetition in the points he's made,

  53. but they're profitable.

  54. And it's no great, as he says here,

  55. it's no trouble to me to say the same things to you

  56. because it's of benefit to you.

  57. It's good for you to hear these things again and again.

  58. Let us, he's saying, focus and prepare ourselves

  59. to go into the world in which we live,

  60. to face up to the challenges that are around us,

  61. to be aware of the distractions that will easily come our way

  62. and to be focused on what we are doing, rejoicing in the Lord.

  63. And so in these days when we can be so easily distracted,

  64. let us always bear heed to what Paul is saying,

  65. what the scriptures are saying to us,

  66. that our first and main purpose is to be a people who worship God.

  67. How many times do you have to hear something

  68. before you understand it?

  69. If you're like me, there's some things that almost doesn't seem to matter

  70. how many times you hear it,

  71. you still can't just grasp it properly.

  72. It's like learning algebra in school.

  73. The teacher's repeating it again and again,

  74. telling you how to do it.

  75. It's just not sinking in.

  76. It's just not registering.

  77. No matter how many times you're hearing it,

  78. there's certain things that it really doesn't matter

  79. how often we hear it.

  80. It's just not sinking in.

  81. Now maybe in our own lives,

  82. think about how many sermons you heard

  83. and it just wasn't registering.

  84. The word of God wasn't penetrating.

  85. You were hearing the word again and again,

  86. whether it was in church, in Sunday school,

  87. from other people around you.

  88. You're hearing the word, but it's not penetrating.

  89. How often do you have to hear it to understand it?

  90. Well, the gospel is different in that sense.

  91. It's only by God's grace and by his spirit

  92. in opening our hearts that we begin to receive

  93. and to understand.

  94. But as Paul is writing to the church at Philippi,

  95. as well as many of the other churches he wrote through

  96. in the New Testament,

  97. what you find is repeating the same things

  98. again and again, prayerfully,

  99. that that word would penetrate

  100. and work in people's hearts.

  101. And so we keep hearing,

  102. we keep coming to hear,

  103. yes, it can sound the same thing again and again,

  104. but all the time it's working away in us

  105. and building us up in the faith,

  106. reminding us of who we worship.

  107. And as we go on,

  108. we're strengthened in our faith.

  109. John Flavel once said,

  110. there was a time when 3,000 souls

  111. were born to Christ at one sermon.

  112. Again, about the day of Pentecost.

  113. And as Peter preached the word,

  114. 3,000 souls were saved.

  115. But he went on to say,

  116. it may now be 3,000 sermons may be preached

  117. and not one soul converted.

  118. But does that mean we lose hope?

  119. Does that mean we lose heart?

  120. Because every time we come under the word of God

  121. or gather together around God's word,

  122. that it seems to be doing little

  123. or having no effect?

  124. No.

  125. Paul, as he says here,

  126. he's just reminding them again and again

  127. to go on in faith,

  128. to go on in the strength of the Lord,

  129. always rejoicing in the Lord

  130. and always make sure that in your own heart,

  131. your priority is first and foremost

  132. to worship God,

  133. not to be distracted,

  134. not to be distracted by the devil

  135. and the way he'll try to discourage you,

  136. not to be distracted by things

  137. that are going on around us.

  138. First and foremost,

  139. to always rejoice in the Lord.

  140. If you put on a fire and leave it,

  141. it's going to burn out.

  142. If you keep feeding that fire,

  143. it's going to keep burning.

  144. And that's what Paul is saying here to the people.

  145. Keep feeding your souls.

  146. Keep coming to the Lord

  147. and being strengthened in your faith.

  148. Yes, you come to faith,

  149. but unless you continue to refuel your faith

  150. and come to the source of your faith,

  151. it's going to burn out.

  152. We are to be a people who again and again

  153. approach God in worship.

  154. And that's why there's wisdom

  155. in gathering in the middle of the week.

  156. Perhaps we're doing so in the midst

  157. of a busy week.

  158. And in a busy week,

  159. all we're doing is giving out all the time,

  160. giving out of our strength,

  161. giving out of our time,

  162. giving out in our work.

  163. We're giving to others

  164. as we serve in different ways.

  165. All the time giving out.

  166. But then there's a time when we come

  167. to take in,

  168. to take in what God is saying to us,

  169. to recharge our batteries,

  170. to refresh our souls,

  171. to refresh ourselves among one another

  172. and around God's word

  173. and in singing his praise,

  174. to delight and to worship God at all times.

  175. Psalm 42 speaks about that

  176. and its sense of thirsting for God.

  177. It says that's the kind of people

  178. that we are to be

  179. and longing to meet with God.

  180. I knew the psalmist says

  181. we should long to come together

  182. and worship God.

  183. We should be thirsting for our God.

  184. We all need to recharge

  185. and to come to the source of our faith,

  186. the Lord,

  187. and to refresh ourselves in him.

  188. That's what Paul was constantly doing,

  189. no matter where he was,

  190. whether he was on his missionary journeys,

  191. whether he was writing from a prison cell.

  192. He was able to rejoice in the Lord

  193. and find his strength in him.

  194. So here in these first three verses

  195. of chapter three,

  196. Paul pauses to reflect here

  197. and he takes us back to the heart of worship

  198. with encouragement and warnings as well.

  199. And these we're going to look at

  200. just for a few moments.

  201. He's taking us back to Christ.

  202. It's all about him.

  203. It's not about what we do

  204. or what we are.

  205. It's about who he is

  206. and what he has done.

  207. So there's three things

  208. I want us to take from these verses,

  209. each verse individually.

  210. Verse one, first of all,

  211. tells us that we are to remember.

  212. To remember.

  213. They're all reminders to us

  214. of what worship is.

  215. First thing is to remember.

  216. Finally, my brothers,

  217. rejoice in the Lord.

  218. To write the same things to you

  219. is no trouble to me

  220. and is safe for you.

  221. He's just reminding the people

  222. this is what it's about.

  223. This is what our lives

  224. are to be focused on.

  225. This is where we are to look to

  226. at all times.

  227. Rejoice in the Lord.

  228. It's like a command.

  229. A command to continue

  230. in this way.

  231. To go forward in this way.

  232. Otherwise,

  233. you're going to go off track.

  234. You're going to lose your way.

  235. If you start getting distracted

  236. by what's going on around you,

  237. what other people are doing,

  238. or what gods they are worshipping,

  239. or how they are living their lives,

  240. you're going to get off track.

  241. But he's saying,

  242. brothers,

  243. rejoice in the Lord.

  244. And it's no trouble

  245. for me to say this to you.

  246. And it's safe for you.

  247. This is where you are to find

  248. your salvation and your safety.

  249. It is always in the Lord.

  250. That is the great recurring theme

  251. in this letter.

  252. And what he constantly wants

  253. the people to remember.

  254. And what he repeats here.

  255. And what he repeats again,

  256. as you see in chapter 4,

  257. where he says in verse 4

  258. of that chapter,

  259. rejoice in the Lord always.

  260. Again, I will say,

  261. rejoice.

  262. Repeating it again

  263. and again and again.

  264. But it's for the people's good.

  265. And it's for our good

  266. to hear it as well.

  267. That we are to be a people

  268. rejoicing in the Lord always.

  269. He knows it for himself.

  270. He knows the blessing

  271. that there is in this.

  272. In the midst of all his distractions,

  273. his own distractions,

  274. he finds his strength

  275. in rejoicing in the Lord.

  276. And so what does that mean

  277. for ourselves tonight?

  278. Well, again,

  279. it's just this reminder.

  280. Whatever circumstances

  281. we find ourselves in,

  282. whether it's internationally,

  283. nationally, locally,

  284. or just personal to ourselves,

  285. whatever is going on

  286. in our hearts,

  287. whatever our troubles,

  288. whatever our joys,

  289. whatever our fears and worries,

  290. we bring them to the Lord.

  291. We bring them to him

  292. and we rejoice in him.

  293. That he is a God who hears.

  294. That we are coming to a living Savior.

  295. That we are coming

  296. through the Holy Spirit,

  297. as he says here,

  298. that we worship

  299. by the Spirit of God

  300. and glory in Christ Jesus.

  301. This is our great privilege

  302. as a people of worship.

  303. That we come to a living God.

  304. And so we come

  305. and we come again

  306. and again

  307. and again.

  308. We come together.

  309. We come in our own time.

  310. We come and approach

  311. the living God

  312. who is able

  313. to refresh our souls

  314. and to bless us.

  315. And if we don't,

  316. what happens?

  317. We are in danger

  318. of falling.

  319. We are in danger

  320. of just slipping back

  321. bit by bit.

  322. We are in danger

  323. of just our hearts

  324. being on fire

  325. but being quenched

  326. little by little.

  327. It is always the danger

  328. that we have,

  329. the warning we have

  330. throughout Scripture,

  331. do not forget the Lord.

  332. You go back to Deuteronomy

  333. and it's a recurring warning

  334. in that book.

  335. Your people,

  336. Moses' people,

  337. God's people

  338. are going into

  339. the promised land

  340. with this warning

  341. ringing in their ears.

  342. Do not get distracted.

  343. Do not lose your focus.

  344. Do not forget the Lord.

  345. Remember,

  346. first and foremost,

  347. we worship God.

  348. What is it

  349. to worship God?

  350. You were asked

  351. that question.

  352. How would you

  353. answer that?

  354. What does it mean

  355. for you to worship God?

  356. Well,

  357. some people have

  358. put it down

  359. in different ways.

  360. But a man called

  361. William Temple,

  362. who was once

  363. Archbishop of Canterbury,

  364. he said this,

  365. defining worship

  366. in this way,

  367. as quickening

  368. the conscience

  369. by the holiness

  370. of God,

  371. feeding the mind

  372. with the truth

  373. of God,

  374. purging the imagination

  375. by the beauty

  376. of God,

  377. opening the heart

  378. to the love

  379. of God,

  380. and devoting

  381. the will

  382. to the purpose

  383. of God.

  384. There's much

  385. in that quote,

  386. so much in it,

  387. but what is worship?

  388. It's about God,

  389. all about him,

  390. our conscience

  391. being crooked

  392. by the holiness

  393. of God,

  394. feeding the mind

  395. through the truth

  396. of God,

  397. purging the imagination

  398. by the beauty

  399. of God.

  400. He becomes

  401. more precious

  402. to us,

  403. opening the heart

  404. to the love

  405. of God

  406. and devoting

  407. the will

  408. to the purpose

  409. of God.

  410. It affects

  411. change in us,

  412. not just

  413. by sitting

  414. and taking it in,

  415. but by going

  416. away with it

  417. and putting it out.

  418. We come in,

  419. we refuel

  420. so we can

  421. put out again.

  422. We come

  423. to remember

  424. the Lord

  425. as we worship him.

  426. Second thing

  427. we see here

  428. is in verse 2.

  429. And here's just

  430. a warning,

  431. don't be distracted

  432. by what's going

  433. on around you.

  434. Refuse to get drawn

  435. into these things.

  436. Look out for the dogs,

  437. look out for the evildoers,

  438. look out for those

  439. who mutilate

  440. the flesh.

  441. What is he saying here?

  442. Well,

  443. he's reminding them here

  444. that there are many

  445. who will seek

  446. to take them away

  447. from what they are

  448. meant to be doing

  449. in worshipping God.

  450. And in particular,

  451. he's talking here

  452. about those

  453. who are saying

  454. you have to be

  455. circumcised.

  456. Without circumcision,

  457. there's no way

  458. you can approach God.

  459. This is almost

  460. what's at the heart

  461. of worship

  462. for so many people

  463. around in Paul's day.

  464. Without this,

  465. there's no way

  466. you can approach God.

  467. But Paul is reminding them,

  468. refuse to be drawn

  469. into this.

  470. Don't be distracted

  471. by this.

  472. Worship isn't about

  473. what you do,

  474. but what I do

  475. and what I have done

  476. for you.

  477. That's what he goes on

  478. to expand on

  479. in verse 3.

  480. We are the real

  481. circumcision

  482. who worship

  483. by the spirit

  484. of God

  485. and glory

  486. in Christ Jesus.

  487. No confidence

  488. in the flesh.

  489. So the warning

  490. is there.

  491. Don't be distracted

  492. by those around you

  493. who will seek

  494. to lead you away

  495. in another direction.

  496. And again,

  497. it's such a warning

  498. to ourselves

  499. today as well

  500. when there are

  501. so many things

  502. that will distract us,

  503. so many things

  504. that people will tell us

  505. are important

  506. and how we're to live,

  507. even how we're to worship.

  508. What we worship

  509. is the living God,

  510. not man.

  511. And so we listen

  512. to what the word

  513. of God says to us.

  514. The Judea,

  515. the Jews around

  516. at this time

  517. were trying to force

  518. people to follow

  519. the law.

  520. the law was a big thing

  521. for them.

  522. And if you didn't keep

  523. the law,

  524. you weren't right

  525. with God.

  526. There was no way

  527. you could come near

  528. to God

  529. and yet the law

  530. could never be upheld.

  531. You could never

  532. keep it perfectly.

  533. You were enslaved

  534. in this way

  535. to trying to keep

  536. the law,

  537. something that was

  538. impossible to do.

  539. But what Paul

  540. is saying,

  541. refuse to get

  542. pulled into this.

  543. you come

  544. and worship

  545. God freely,

  546. not burdened

  547. by the law,

  548. but free in Christ

  549. who has fulfilled

  550. the law for you.

  551. What we could not do,

  552. he has done

  553. for us.

  554. And so we have

  555. this freedom

  556. to approach

  557. God in this way.

  558. But are we?

  559. Or are we still

  560. trying in our own way

  561. to satisfy God

  562. and to fulfill

  563. God's law

  564. and make sure

  565. that we are doing

  566. everything right

  567. ourselves?

  568. Human effort

  569. plays a big part

  570. in so many people's

  571. religion today.

  572. It's about

  573. what we do.

  574. If you try

  575. your best,

  576. as somebody

  577. once said,

  578. even though

  579. you aren't perfect,

  580. God will say,

  581. I let you

  582. into heaven

  583. because you

  584. tried so hard.

  585. is that

  586. the answer

  587. to life's

  588. troubles today?

  589. Is that

  590. the way

  591. to heaven?

  592. Well,

  593. the person

  594. went on

  595. to say,

  596. if that is

  597. what the Bible

  598. teaches,

  599. then it is so.

  600. But if it is

  601. contrary

  602. to what the Bible

  603. teaches,

  604. then trying

  605. your best

  606. to get into

  607. heaven

  608. is like

  609. trying your

  610. best

  611. to jump

  612. across

  613. the Grand

  614. Canyon.

  615. You're not

  616. going to make

  617. it.

  618. No matter

  619. how hard

  620. you try,

  621. it's impossible.

  622. We cannot

  623. do it.

  624. And if we

  625. are thinking

  626. the way

  627. to heaven

  628. is to try

  629. our best,

  630. to do

  631. our best,

  632. we will

  633. not make

  634. it.

  635. The only

  636. way is

  637. through faith

  638. in the

  639. Lord Jesus

  640. Christ.

  641. And we

  642. say,

  643. yes,

  644. my faith

  645. is in

  646. Christ.

  647. But yet

  648. there are

  649. times when

  650. we can

  651. still be

  652. pulled back

  653. into a

  654. way of

  655. thinking,

  656. but I've

  657. got to

  658. do this.

  659. I'm

  660. letting

  661. the Lord

  662. down

  663. because I've

  664. done this

  665. or I haven't

  666. done this

  667. and feeling

  668. this burden

  669. of guilt.

  670. But on the

  671. cross he

  672. said,

  673. it is

  674. finished.

  675. It is

  676. done.

  677. And you

  678. put your

  679. trust in

  680. me.

  681. Let us

  682. not be

  683. distracted

  684. by others

  685. who will

  686. say,

  687. you have

  688. to do

  689. this,

  690. that,

  691. or the

  692. next thing.

  693. You need

  694. faith in

  695. the Lord

  696. Jesus.

  697. And your

  698. faith will

  699. lead to

  700. works.

  701. Not works

  702. that will

  703. save you,

  704. but works

  705. that will

  706. fulfill you

  707. as you

  708. do all

  709. to the

  710. glory of

  711. God.

  712. Not adding

  713. anything to

  714. your salvation,

  715. but just

  716. doing all

  717. for him

  718. who gave

  719. his all

  720. for you.

  721. So why

  722. do we

  723. do what

  724. we do?

  725. If someone

  726. was going to

  727. ask you

  728. tonight as

  729. you leave

  730. the church,

  731. what were

  732. you doing

  733. in there?

  734. What

  735. response

  736. would you

  737. give to

  738. them?

  739. we

  740. were

  741. worshipping

  742. God.

  743. We

  744. were

  745. together

  746. singing

  747. God's

  748. praise.

  749. We

  750. were

  751. hearing

  752. God's

  753. word.

  754. Would

  755. that

  756. answer

  757. their

  758. questions?

  759. You

  760. may have

  761. to go

  762. a little

  763. further,

  764. but remember

  765. the scripture

  766. says you

  767. always have a

  768. reason for

  769. the hope

  770. that you

  771. have within.

  772. To say,

  773. I was

  774. coming to

  775. worship the

  776. Lord who

  777. died for

  778. my sins.

  779. I

  780. believe in

  781. him,

  782. that I

  783. might have

  784. life through

  785. him.

  786. Something as

  787. simple as

  788. that, but

  789. you're giving

  790. a response.

  791. If you

  792. leave here

  793. tonight and

  794. someone asks

  795. you, what

  796. were you

  797. doing?

  798. Well, I

  799. was just

  800. doing what

  801. I do

  802. every week.

  803. I don't

  804. know what

  805. I was

  806. doing in

  807. there.

  808. I don't

  809. know why

  810. I was

  811. doing it.

  812. That's

  813. not explaining

  814. it.

  815. We have

  816. to have

  817. an answer

  818. to give

  819. to people.

  820. There's a

  821. little story

  822. told about

  823. a church

  824. in Denmark.

  825. And every

  826. time the

  827. worshipers

  828. would enter

  829. the church,

  830. they would

  831. turn to

  832. the right

  833. and they

  834. would bow

  835. to the

  836. wall.

  837. And someone

  838. was visiting

  839. the church

  840. this day.

  841. And he

  842. was seeing

  843. the people

  844. coming in,

  845. looking to

  846. the right

  847. and bowing

  848. to the

  849. wall and

  850. then going

  851. to their

  852. seats.

  853. And he

  854. was just

  855. so curious

  856. as to why

  857. they were

  858. doing this.

  859. He was a

  860. visitor.

  861. He didn't

  862. know what

  863. they were

  864. doing,

  865. but everyone

  866. who came

  867. in who

  868. was local,

  869. they'd went

  870. through this

  871. motion.

  872. At the

  873. end of

  874. the service,

  875. he went

  876. to ask

  877. some of

  878. the people.

  879. He said,

  880. why were

  881. you bowing

  882. to the

  883. wall as

  884. you came

  885. in?

  886. He said,

  887. the only

  888. answer I

  889. got was,

  890. we've

  891. always done

  892. it this

  893. way.

  894. It's a

  895. common

  896. answer we

  897. have to

  898. things today.

  899. We've

  900. always done

  901. it this

  902. way.

  903. We don't

  904. actually

  905. understand

  906. why we're

  907. doing it.

  908. So the

  909. man wasn't

  910. going to

  911. leave it

  912. at that.

  913. He decided

  914. to go

  915. away and

  916. do a

  917. little bit

  918. of research.

  919. And what

  920. he found

  921. out was

  922. that the

  923. church used

  924. to be a

  925. Catholic

  926. church before

  927. the time

  928. of the

  929. Reformation.

  930. And in the

  931. church on the

  932. right-hand

  933. wall was a

  934. picture of

  935. Mary, a

  936. painting of

  937. Mary.

  938. Not a

  939. painting that

  940. we'd hang,

  941. but just

  942. actually on

  943. the wall.

  944. people would

  945. come in.

  946. So as people

  947. would come in

  948. in the days of

  949. the Catholic

  950. church, they

  951. would bow to

  952. Mary as they

  953. were going in

  954. and then go and

  955. take their seats.

  956. And for years

  957. after the

  958. Reformation, even

  959. though the

  960. painting had

  961. been painted

  962. over, the

  963. ritual continued.

  964. And over

  965. time, people,

  966. generations

  967. passed, and

  968. yet still the

  969. people, the

  970. only answer

  971. they had was,

  972. it's the way

  973. we've always

  974. done it.

  975. But it was

  976. no part of

  977. worship.

  978. It was just

  979. a ritual.

  980. And Paul is

  981. saying here,

  982. don't let your

  983. worship become

  984. just a ritual.

  985. Don't let

  986. anyone come to

  987. you and ask,

  988. what were you

  989. doing?

  990. And you say,

  991. well, just

  992. doing what we

  993. always done.

  994. It's the way

  995. we've always

  996. done it.

  997. Our worship

  998. is living and

  999. active, day

  1000. after day, week

  1001. after week.

  1002. We're not just

  1003. doing it out of

  1004. habit, we're

  1005. doing it out of

  1006. love, out of

  1007. love for our

  1008. Savior.

  1009. And that is

  1010. where our

  1011. focus is to

  1012. be, to

  1013. worship the

  1014. Lord and

  1015. no other, not

  1016. to be distracted

  1017. by anything

  1018. else.

  1019. Look out, he

  1020. says, for the

  1021. dogs, look out

  1022. for the

  1023. evildoers, look

  1024. out for those

  1025. who mutilate the

  1026. flesh.

  1027. Be on your

  1028. guard against

  1029. being led

  1030. away from

  1031. anything that

  1032. isn't

  1033. worshiping God

  1034. in spirit and

  1035. in truth.

  1036. And the

  1037. third and

  1038. final thing we

  1039. see here is in

  1040. verse 3.

  1041. And again, it's

  1042. just a reminder

  1043. to us of

  1044. what we are

  1045. as a people

  1046. of worship.

  1047. We are the

  1048. real circumcision

  1049. who worship

  1050. by the

  1051. spirit of

  1052. God and

  1053. glory in

  1054. Christ Jesus

  1055. and put no

  1056. confidence in

  1057. the flesh.

  1058. Our faith

  1059. relies on

  1060. Christ Jesus

  1061. as Lord.

  1062. Not confidence

  1063. in ourselves,

  1064. not confidence

  1065. in anything that

  1066. we've done, not

  1067. confidence in the

  1068. flesh.

  1069. We are the

  1070. real circumcision.

  1071. He says,

  1072. our hearts are

  1073. circumcised.

  1074. Our hearts are

  1075. melted by the

  1076. glory of God

  1077. in the person

  1078. of Christ.

  1079. Otherwise, we're

  1080. relying on

  1081. something that

  1082. cannot save us,

  1083. ourselves.

  1084. Robert Murray

  1085. McShane, I

  1086. think I quoted

  1087. him a couple of

  1088. weeks ago, a

  1089. famous minister

  1090. in Dundee.

  1091. He died before

  1092. he was 30 and

  1093. yet he had such

  1094. a powerful

  1095. ministry in

  1096. that city.

  1097. And it was

  1098. him that wrote

  1099. the hymn

  1100. Jehovah's

  1101. and Kenyu.

  1102. And if you

  1103. hear the

  1104. words of

  1105. that hymn,

  1106. it reminds

  1107. you of what

  1108. he was and

  1109. what he became

  1110. and how it

  1111. all changed.

  1112. He was a

  1113. stranger to

  1114. grace and

  1115. to God.

  1116. Then one

  1117. day it all

  1118. changed.

  1119. And he

  1120. says in the

  1121. hymn,

  1122. when free

  1123. grace awoke

  1124. me by

  1125. light from

  1126. on high,

  1127. then legal

  1128. fear shook

  1129. me, I

  1130. trembled to

  1131. die.

  1132. No refuge,

  1133. no safety,

  1134. in self could

  1135. I see.

  1136. Jehovah's and

  1137. Kenyu my

  1138. savior must

  1139. be.

  1140. He saw

  1141. nothing in

  1142. this world

  1143. that could

  1144. save him.

  1145. He knew

  1146. only Jehovah's

  1147. and Kenyu

  1148. my savior must

  1149. be.

  1150. And he saw

  1151. everything that

  1152. he had placed

  1153. his confidence

  1154. in was just

  1155. empty.

  1156. He must have

  1157. Christ as his

  1158. hope.

  1159. And that's

  1160. what he

  1161. found.

  1162. My

  1163. terrors all

  1164. vanished before

  1165. the sweet

  1166. name.

  1167. My guilty

  1168. fears banished

  1169. with boldness

  1170. I came to

  1171. drink at the

  1172. fountain,

  1173. life giving

  1174. and free.

  1175. Jehovah's and

  1176. Kenyu is all

  1177. things to

  1178. me.

  1179. His life was

  1180. transformed by

  1181. meeting Christ,

  1182. by coming to

  1183. that living

  1184. water, to

  1185. drink at the

  1186. fountain, life

  1187. giving and

  1188. free.

  1189. that is

  1190. where he

  1191. found what

  1192. worship was.

  1193. It was to

  1194. love Christ

  1195. Jesus with

  1196. all his

  1197. heart.

  1198. Nothing else

  1199. could save

  1200. him.

  1201. What the

  1202. Lord has

  1203. done for

  1204. us, as we

  1205. look to the

  1206. cross, as we

  1207. see what he

  1208. has done for

  1209. us, it

  1210. deserves our

  1211. worship.

  1212. It

  1213. deserves our

  1214. all, all

  1215. other forms,

  1216. glory in

  1217. the flesh,

  1218. but through

  1219. worship

  1220. exalts

  1221. Christ.

  1222. It

  1223. honors God

  1224. and worship

  1225. flows from

  1226. a heart that

  1227. is redeemed

  1228. by him.

  1229. So we

  1230. come to

  1231. him.

  1232. We come

  1233. to worship

  1234. him, as he

  1235. says here,

  1236. as the real

  1237. circumcision,

  1238. who worshiped

  1239. by the spirit

  1240. of God and

  1241. glory in

  1242. Christ Jesus,

  1243. putting no

  1244. confidence in

  1245. the flesh.

  1246. Is that how

  1247. we come to

  1248. worship?

  1249. Tonight,

  1250. tomorrow,

  1251. the day

  1252. after, this

  1253. Lord's Day?

  1254. Are we

  1255. coming

  1256. distracted,

  1257. or are we

  1258. coming focused

  1259. on the one

  1260. we come to

  1261. worship, and

  1262. what he has

  1263. done for

  1264. us?

  1265. Let us not

  1266. be distracted.

  1267. let us not

  1268. lose our

  1269. focus, but

  1270. day after

  1271. day, worship

  1272. him, not

  1273. losing heart,

  1274. but living

  1275. for him, and

  1276. letting the

  1277. love of

  1278. Christ shine

  1279. in our

  1280. hearts, and

  1281. going out and

  1282. showing that

  1283. love for

  1284. others.

  1285. The more we

  1286. come and

  1287. refuel ourselves

  1288. in him, the

  1289. more we have

  1290. to go and

  1291. give out to

  1292. others.

  1293. So as the

  1294. psalmist

  1295. says,

  1296. O come,

  1297. and let

  1298. us worship

  1299. him.

  1300. May we go

  1301. on in that

  1302. way, day

  1303. after day.

  1304. Amen.

  1305. May God

  1306. bless these

  1307. thoughts.

  1308. Amen.
