  1. Let's begin our worship today by singing to God's praise.

  2. We're singing in Psalm 27, in the Sing Psalms version.

  3. Psalm 27, in the Sing Psalms version, verse 1 to verse 5.

  4. The Lord's my Savior and my light, who will make me dismayed.

  5. The Lord's the stronghold of my life.

  6. Why should I be afraid?

  7. We'll sing from verse 1 to verse 5 to God's praise, and we stand to sing.

  8. The Lord's my Savior and my light, who will make me dismayed.

  9. The Lord's the stronghold of my life.

  10. Why should I be afraid?

  11. When evildoers threaten me

  12. To take my life away

  13. My hundred studies and my foes

  14. Will stumble in that day

  15. Although an army hands me in

  16. My heart will feel no dread

  17. Though one of this may shoot arise

  18. I will lift up my head

  19. One thing I'll plead before the Lord

  20. And this I'll seek for ways

  21. That I may come within God's eyes

  22. And dwell there all my days

  23. That on the beauty of the Lord

  24. That on the beauty of the Lord

  25. I constantly may kiss

  26. And in His heart

  27. And in His heart

  28. May seek to know

  29. Direction in His ways

  30. For in His dwelling

  31. For in His dwelling

  32. He will keep me safe

  33. He will keep me safe

  34. With troubled days

  35. With troubled days

  36. Within His dead

  37. He'll shelter me

  38. And all of the Lord

  39. And all of the Lord

  40. And all of me raise

  41. Now let's come to God in prayer

  42. Let us pray

  43. Our Father in heaven

  44. We have been reminded of the purpose

  45. Of coming to worship You

  46. Of coming to gather us a people

  47. To call upon Your name

  48. And to hear Your word proclaimed to us

  49. We come with that longing of the psalmist

  50. That we may gaze upon the beauty of the Lord

  51. Constantly

  52. For we would recognize that we need You

  53. And how we need You

  54. In the world in which we live

  55. And all that's going on around us

  56. We pray for Your calmness

  57. And Your peace upon us as a people

  58. That as we come in Your name today

  59. That You would still us

  60. That You would still us

  61. And help us to be still

  62. And to know that You are God

  63. So may Your word be blessed to each one of us

  64. From the youngest to the oldest

  65. That You would give us all ears

  66. To hear what You are saying to us

  67. And also give us eyes to see

  68. Eyes to see that in all the chaos around us

  69. That You are still God

  70. And that You reign on high

  71. And that the glory of Your name

  72. Is still proclaimed and heard

  73. Far and wide

  74. And for that we thank You

  75. We thank You that You are speaking to us

  76. And that You minister to us

  77. In all our different needs

  78. So we pray that You will encourage us

  79. In our homes and in our families

  80. To be a people of prayer

  81. To be a people who remember You

  82. Not just as we come to worship You

  83. For this time

  84. But that day by day

  85. We will go on in Your strength

  86. And that we will seek Your face

  87. On a daily basis

  88. That we will seek to honour You

  89. In our youth and into our old age

  90. In all that we do

  91. Whether it's in school or at home

  92. Or in the workplace

  93. Or throughout our communities

  94. That You will give us words

  95. To speak and share with one another

  96. And to encourage one another

  97. And ways to help one another

  98. We do pray Your blessing on us all together

  99. We thank You for all the young ones here today

  100. We thank You for the Sunday school

  101. The creche and the tweenies

  102. We do pray Your blessing upon all that is done there

  103. We pray for our day schools as well

  104. And as they look forward to the holidays

  105. In this coming week

  106. We pray for Your blessing over everyone

  107. Parents and families

  108. And teachers and staff

  109. That You will refresh and be with them all

  110. Look after them and take care of them

  111. So Lord continue with us in our worship now

  112. Help us and guide us in all that we do

  113. And hear our thanks and our praise to You

  114. As we offer up

  115. In the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ

  116. For the forgiveness of our sins

  117. Amen

  118. Well as we were singing in that psalm

  119. We were reminded that it is such a good thing

  120. To come and worship and praise God together

  121. And it is good to come together

  122. And worship God on a beautiful sunny day

  123. When we feel His warmth

  124. A day like today

  125. What do you think?

  126. Is it a beautiful sunny day today?

  127. Hands up if you think it is a beautiful sunny day today

  128. The sun is shining

  129. And we feel the warmth of the sun

  130. Hands up if you think that is true

  131. No hands going up

  132. My goodness

  133. You must all think that it is just a terrible day outside

  134. Where is the sun then?

  135. Where is the sun then?

  136. Where is the warmth of the sun?

  137. Do you think just because we don't see the sun

  138. It is not shining?

  139. Or do you think just because we maybe think

  140. It is a horrible cold wet day outside

  141. That there is no heat from the sun?

  142. Well if we do we are mistaken

  143. And in our study in 1st Peter

  144. We are thinking about people who are looking around

  145. And they don't think the weather is nice and sunny and warm

  146. Because there are so many bad things going on around them

  147. They think it is just all these storms and gales that keep coming

  148. Because their eyes are very much just looking down

  149. Even if you are walking into church this morning

  150. You probably had your eyes down to the ground

  151. To try and keep your face away from the rain and the wind

  152. But actually if you lift up your eyes

  153. And if you look around

  154. You actually think to yourself

  155. Well the sun must be there

  156. Because if the sun wasn't there

  157. It would be pitch black

  158. If the sun wasn't there

  159. We would be freezing cold

  160. And just because it is cloudy and wet outside

  161. Cloudy and wet outside doesn't mean that there is no sun

  162. The sun is still there

  163. And for that we have to be thankful

  164. And I was reminded of that this week

  165. Because on Tuesday I flew to Glasgow

  166. And then on Thursday I came back on the plane from Glasgow

  167. And both of these days were almost days like today

  168. It was cloudy and wet and dull

  169. And you are thinking to yourself

  170. What a horrible day

  171. But then as the plane went up into the sky

  172. We came through the clouds

  173. And what do you think I could see then?

  174. I could see a blue sky

  175. I could see the sun

  176. The sun was there all the time

  177. And as a great reminder to ourselves

  178. Just as we are thinking about the people in Peter's day

  179. Think of our own day to day as well

  180. We can often focus on all that is wrong around us

  181. And ask, where is God in all of this?

  182. Why has he left us?

  183. But he hasn't

  184. Just like the sun is always there

  185. No matter the weather

  186. We still feel its warmth

  187. Even though we might think it's cold

  188. If the sun wasn't there

  189. We would perish

  190. But because the sun is there

  191. We have life

  192. And the same is true with God

  193. There are times when we think

  194. We can't see God

  195. Or where is God

  196. And especially when we are going through

  197. Times of difficulty

  198. But God is always there

  199. Just like the sun is shining

  200. We feel his warmth

  201. We know his blessing

  202. Even when the going is hard

  203. So we look up today

  204. We remind ourselves

  205. Just because it's a wet

  206. And windy and cloudy day

  207. The sun still shines

  208. And we remember that God

  209. In the midst of all our troubles

  210. And all our challenges

  211. God is always there

  212. Giving his warmth

  213. Giving his light

  214. And guiding us in all our ways

  215. So may we trust him

  216. In the beautiful sunny days

  217. But also in the days

  218. When it's wet and windy

  219. May we trust him

  220. With all our hearts

  221. We're going to say

  222. The Lord's prayer together now

  223. Let's say the Lord's prayer

  224. Our Father which art in heaven

  225. Hallowed be thy name

  226. Thy kingdom come

  227. Thy will be done on earth

  228. As it is in heaven

  229. Give us this day

  230. Our daily bread

  231. And forgive us our debts

  232. As we forgive our debtors

  233. And lead us not into temptation

  234. But deliver us from evil

  235. For thine is the kingdom

  236. The power and the glory forever

  237. Amen

  238. We're going to sing together

  239. To God's praise

  240. Once again we're singing

  241. In Psalm 43

  242. In the Scottish Psalter

  243. Psalm 43

  244. We're singing the whole of this Psalm

  245. Page 264

  246. Of the Psalm books

  247. Judge me O God

  248. And plead my cause

  249. Against the ungodly nation

  250. From the unjust

  251. And crafty man

  252. O be thou my salvation

  253. And then verse 3

  254. It says

  255. O send thy light forth

  256. And thy truth

  257. Let them be guides to me

  258. And bring me to thine holy hill

  259. Even where thy dwellings be

  260. We'll sing the whole of this Psalm

  261. To God's praise

  297. great crowd. Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside.

  298. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, Jesus, son of David,

  299. have mercy on me. And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more,

  300. son of David, have mercy on me. And Jesus stopped and said, call him. And they called the blind man,

  301. saying to him, take heart, get up, he is calling you. And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and

  302. came to Jesus. And Jesus said to him, what do you want me to do for you? The blind man said to him,

  303. Rabbi, let me recover my sight. And Jesus said to him, go your way. Your faith has made you well.

  304. And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way. And we'll turn to our second reading

  305. in 1 Peter chapter 1. We'll take up our reading at verse 8 as we continue our study in this letter.

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  306. So 1 Peter, taking up our reading at verse 7, where we just remind ourselves what we were looking at

  307. last week, the tested genuineness of our faith. We go through various trials. And faith is more

  308. precious than gold. That perishes though it is tested by the fire, may be found to result in praise

  309. and glory and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though you have not seen him,

  310. you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is

  311. inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

  312. concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours,

  313. searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was

  314. indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. It was revealed to

  315. them that they were serving not themselves but you in the things that have now been announced to you

  316. through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which

  317. angels long to look. And so on. And may God bless these readings from his word. Again, bow our heads

  318. in a word of prayer. Let us pray. Our Father in heaven, as we continue in our worship of you,

  319. we thank you that you have already sent forth your light and your truth, that they have been what has

  320. been the guide to your church down through all the generations. And even at times when churches and

  321. people have wandered away from the truth, there is still your light shining brightly, guiding us back to

  322. yourself and back to your way. There are times when we have to come just like Bartimaeus because their eyes

  323. have been blinded, crying out, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me. We do come confessing our sins.

  324. We acknowledge, O Lord, all that we have done past and even in the present, how we sin in so many ways.

  325. And acknowledging that even as we go forward, we go forward as sinners in need of help, in need of

  326. repentance. But assure that as we come to you, that you are the one who is able to help us to see

  327. and to see all things, to see through eyes of faith what you have done for us, the things that we could

  328. not do ourselves, the salvation we could not purchase for ourselves, the way to heaven that we could not

  329. find by ourselves, the hope of eternal life that we could never afford or purchase in any way.

  330. But we thank you that all has been done for us, that we have in Jesus Christ, the one who is the way,

  331. the truth, and the life. And we thank you that we can come anew day by day and rejoice in the hope that

  332. he is able to give. And so we pray for your blessing on us as a people, as we come to worship your name

  333. this day, as we come to hear your word, that you would truly bless it to our souls. That even these

  334. words that we have read of the Lord Jesus, that though we do not see him, we can believe in him

  335. and rejoice with a joy that is inexpressible. May you give us all that joy in our hearts today, the joy

  336. that only comes from you. And we pray that throughout our land and throughout this world,

  337. from the rising of the sun to its setting, that no matter what situation people find themselves in,

  338. no matter how dark our days may seem, that we rejoice that the Son of God is shining from on high,

  339. that the warmth of your word, the blessing of your spirit is still ours to be had. And so we continue

  340. to pray that you will send your light forth and your truth day after day, and that people will come

  341. to rejoice in it. We thank you for all our homes and our families, and we thank you for the gift of

  342. fellowship and prayer for one another. And we thank you that even as we come in prayer just now,

  343. there may be many people on our minds, many situations that we are praying for, and hear the

  344. prayers of all our hearts as we offer them up as one. And as we say amen together, Lord, we ask,

  345. hear our prayers, and your will be done in all things. Remember those who need you in particular

  346. ways. Remember those who are unwell, those who are laid aside at this time and struggling

  347. in maybe many different ways, unseen to us, when there are issues of the heart and the mind

  348. and even the soul. When there are troubles that surround us that no one else sees, we thank you

  349. that you see and that you know, and that you are able to guard our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus.

  350. And so we pray that you will surround your people, that you will uphold them, that you will strengthen

  351. them as every need they have, that they will be able to cast their cares upon you, for you care for us.

  352. We pray your blessing on those who are blind to you in these days. We pray, Lord, that there will be a

  353. longing to see, and only you can give that longing to the hearts of the blind. So we pray for you to send

  354. your spirit down upon us, an awakening, Lord, in our hearts and in our souls, and to seek the Lord

  355. while he may be found, to call upon him while he is near. We pray, Lord, for your blessing over us

  356. as communities and as islands. We thank you, Lord, for all that is done for us as a people, for every

  357. service that we have to hand, for those who are on call in emergency services, for those who are working

  358. in different aspects of our community life, seeking to benefit the good of all our people, for those who

  359. are leaders over us and seek to direct us in the right path in these challenging days, financially and

  360. in so many other different ways. We pray, Lord, for you to give wisdom from on high, for you to lead us

  361. and to guide us. We pray for our nation and the nations of the world, and we see so many things

  362. happening in our midst. We think today of that great tragedy in Donegal for the families who are

  363. grieving and mourning there in a community that is so shocked and stunned by these events, a community

  364. much like our own, where people will know one another, love one another and care for one another,

  365. and I will be hurting so much. We pray, Lord, that you will surround them, that you will draw near to

  366. them, that your presence will be known to them, that you would comfort us only you can and give healing

  367. in the midst of all of their pain. We remember that for others throughout our world and greater

  368. situations as we see too where nations are in conflict and so many atrocities happening. We think of

  369. Ukraine so much in the news and continue to pray for peace and stability there, but we know that

  370. throughout the world so many of your people are suffering in different ways. There is a darkness

  371. that surrounds so many. There is a wickedness and an evil that is active in so many ways and places,

  372. but we thank you that there is greater at work too, that you are in our midst and that you are greater,

  373. that you are victorious. And we see that especially at the cross, where we see that even in the midst of

  374. the darkness, in the middle of the day, and in all the sorrow and anguish that surrounded it,

  375. that still there was life, and that you gave hope to all your people, that even in our darkest hour,

  376. we can look and see the one who suffered in our place, but now the one who is risen. On that glorious

  377. resurrection morning, the light of the gospel has resounded clearly from that day, so that even today as we

  378. gather, we have the hope that is spoken of even here in Peter, the good news of the gospel preached to

  379. many. And so we pray, Lord, for your word to go out with power, for it to convict and convert, for it to be

  380. found precious to us all, and that we rejoice not just in the word, but the one who is the word, that we

  381. would rejoice in Christ Jesus anew, and seek to follow him, and look to him with eyes fixed on him,

  382. eyes of faith. So pardon our sins, and hear our thanks, receive our praise, and all we ask, we ask in his

  383. precious name. Amen. Before we turn to look at 1 Peter, we'll again sing to God's praise in Psalm 19.

  384. Psalm 19, singing at verse 7 to verse 11 in the Scottish Psalter, page 223 of the Psalm books.

  385. God's law is perfect and converts the soul in sin that lies. God's testimony is most sure and makes

  386. the simple wise. We'll sing from verse 7 to 11 to God's praise.

  387. God's law is perfect and converts the soul in sin that lies. God's testimony is most sure and makes the

  388. simple wise. The statutes of the Lord are right, and do rejoice the heart. The Lord's command is pure,

  389. the love is crushed, and pours the mother. The God says, the love of the Lord our calling has not

  390. The judges of the Lord are true, and righteous are together.

  391. They more than gold, they much shine gold to be decided on.

  392. And honey, honey, from the cold, that hopeth sweeter far.

  393. More over me, thy servant born, that he is my true friend.

  394. A great reward provided is for them that keep us safe.

  395. We can turn together to our second reading there in the first letter of Peter.

  396. 1 Peter chapter 1.

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  397. And we can take up our reading again at verse 8.

  398. Though you have not seen him, you love him.

  399. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible

  400. and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls,

  401. and so on.

  402. We're continuing our study in this letter of Peter to a people who were scattered far

  403. and wide and a people who were suffering in many different ways and situations.

  404. And Peter here is speaking in verse 8 about their vision, what they're seeing, or maybe

  405. what they're not seeing at this time, but the promise they have of what they will see.

  406. The last time we were looking at verse 3 through to verse 7.

  407. And we were reminded there of the trials that the people were going through,

  408. but also of the hope that they had and the inheritance that they had to look forward to

  409. at the revelation of Jesus Christ, at the coming of Jesus Christ,

  410. the day when everyone will see the Lord Jesus.

  411. But for now he is saying, you do not see him.

  412. But he says, you love him.

  413. So I begin today by asking you a question.

  414. What is your eyesight like?

  415. Mine is poor.

  416. And from a very young age, I knew I would need to wear glasses to help me see.

  417. If I take off my glasses, everything just suddenly becomes a blur.

  418. And I can still remember the first pair of glasses I got and just how amazing it was to put them on

  419. and to actually be able to see things clearly, everything that I'd been missing out on for so long.

  420. The difference it makes when you're able to see properly.

  421. And maybe that's something that many of you know or have experienced in life

  422. through long or short-sightedness.

  423. The need to put on glasses, otherwise everything before you is just blurry.

  424. So as we dive into this letter of Peter,

  425. and we see him addressing this people who were scattered far and wide,

  426. living in a hostile world.

  427. They were living in a time just like our own,

  428. when the world is often hostile towards the gospel.

  429. But here is Peter writing to them with a great purpose.

  430. He's writing to them to help them, to encourage them.

  431. But he's writing to them not just to survive or to get on day by day in a quiet way,

  432. in a quiet sense, just to get through.

  433. He's writing to them to help them to thrive,

  434. to go on strengthened, equipped in life.

  435. And in particular, he's writing to them to be on the mission of God together,

  436. to remind themselves of this hope,

  437. this inheritance that they have, that they can share,

  438. even though they are going through their times of trial.

  439. And they know that as they are living in this world,

  440. to live for the Lord Jesus comes at a great cost.

  441. And the same is true for ourselves so often today.

  442. To live for faith in the Lord Jesus Christ often comes at a cost.

  443. Maybe we don't feel it or know it in the same way as the people in Peter's day

  444. or even many others throughout the world today.

  445. We know too, though, that we experience difficulties and trials along the way.

  446. And the difference between merely surviving or just getting by in this world

  447. and actually thriving is often based on what we see and what our focus is on.

  448. And so what Peter is getting at here in these verses is to have a clear vision,

  449. a clear focus, not in a physical sense, but in a spiritual sense.

  450. And to look at the world around us, not through eyes that are dimmed by sin

  451. and the darkness around us, but to look at things through eyes of faith.

  452. To have eyes of faith.

  453. To see, even as Bartimaeus saw, a vision restored through faith.

  454. Not just seeing physically, but seeing Jesus and following Him in the way.

  455. And so what is your vision like?

  456. What is your eyesight like in this sense?

  457. How are you seeing spiritually today?

  458. Are you looking at things around you and just seeking to survive,

  459. just to get through each day as it comes?

  460. Or are you looking to Jesus and seeking to thrive and to live for Him?

  461. That's a challenge the people in Peter's day had.

  462. And it's a challenge to ourselves today.

  463. And that is what Peter is encouraging them to hear.

  464. To see Jesus in the midst of all their challenges.

  465. To live in a world that has, yes, a different culture

  466. to the way that we should be living in many ways.

  467. But to live a life that we don't compromise our faith

  468. because of the culture around us.

  469. But also to say that we will not retreat from the culture around us.

  470. We're not just going to go and back away from everything

  471. that we see wrong in this world.

  472. But we are to go forward as a people of faith.

  473. With a vision of Christ.

  474. And that being a vision that we long to share with others.

  475. So it's helpful that Peter has the reality of life in mind here too.

  476. Knowing the sufferings that the Christian will have.

  477. But knowing too the great hope that we have in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  478. And to have that vision of Him is so helpful

  479. as we walk through this life.

  480. As we journey in this world.

  481. As strangers, as we've exiled, as we've seen already in this letter.

  482. This is not our permanent home.

  483. We're just passing through.

  484. But as we are passing through.

  485. We can say to ourselves as someone once did.

  486. If I must walk the path of suffering.

  487. Well we can remember that our Saviour has walked it first.

  488. And when we wonder will these trials, will they never end?

  489. We can look to our Saviour's life.

  490. And remember suffering but then glory.

  491. As it says in verse 11 there.

  492. The end of verse 11.

  493. Inquiring into the person or time of the Spirit of Christ Jesus in them was indicating.

  494. When he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.

  495. He suffered for us.

  496. That our inheritance would be to be part of his glory too.

  497. So we look to our Saviour.

  498. And he is reminding us to keep our eyes on him.

  499. To look to him.

  500. So we're going to look at this in three different headings.

  501. First of all, thinking of it all under the heading of seeing through eyes of faith.

  502. Seeing first of all, we see what others can't.

  503. Secondly, we see what has been done.

  504. And then thirdly, we see what others long for.

  505. So the first thing we see is we see what others can't.

  506. As Peter is writing from his own experience.

  507. And we looked at this in the first part of our study.

  508. He was writing as one who had lived with the Lord Jesus Christ.

  509. He had walked with him.

  510. He had seen him.

  511. He had seen the Lord and been with him.

  512. And he'd gone through many different experiences.

  513. Many different ups and downs in his own life.

  514. But here he is now writing to our people who haven't seen him.

  515. And we see that clearly in the change between verse 7 and verse 8.

  516. He was saying in verse 7 that we are waiting the result of praise and glory and honour at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

  517. That day when he is going to come and we are going to see him.

  518. But then in verse 8 he says,

  519. Though you have not seen him, you love him.

  520. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with a joy inexpressible.

  521. So he knows what it's like to see Jesus.

  522. But he's writing to our people who cannot see him.

  523. And not seeing can often lead to questions.

  524. When we are seeing something clearly in front of us, we understand it better.

  525. But when we are not seeing something, even when someone is talking about it, we can struggle to understand.

  526. Think about sitting in a classroom when you are learning.

  527. And someone is describing a situation or something to you.

  528. It's more difficult to understand when you are not actually seeing it.

  529. But if you are taken to a place and you are shown something and you see it for your eyes, you begin to understand.

  530. For example, the mechanics of how some kind of machine works.

  531. You may be being explained to you how an engine works and you just, as it is being spoken of, you don't understand.

  532. But when you see something in front of you, you begin to recognise the parts and what everything is doing.

  533. So Peter is speaking having seen.

  534. But he's writing to our people who have not seen.

  535. And he's saying to them though, even though you do not see him, you love him.

  536. And how can you love someone you haven't seen?

  537. Well, he's trying to understand who he is.

  538. And especially to understand through faith.

  539. Peter here refocuses their attention, not on the sufferings going on around them, but on the one who has suffered for them.

  540. He focuses their attention on the Lord Jesus Christ.

  541. Though you do not see him, you believe in him and rejoice with a joy inexpressible.

  542. You don't see the physical Jesus in front of you today.

  543. But you see of him.

  544. You hear of him.

  545. You know of him in other ways.

  546. You know of him through his word.

  547. You know of him through his providence.

  548. You know of him through his creation.

  549. We see the Lord in many different ways.

  550. And though we do not see him face to face, we can still love him.

  551. Because of the difference he has made in our lives.

  552. And it is only through eyes of faith that we can see that.

  553. We see what others cannot see.

  554. We see things that we didn't see ourselves in the past because we were blind.

  555. Until Jesus opened our eyes, we couldn't see or understand.

  556. But by grace, he opens our eyes to love him.

  557. To see him through eyes of faith.

  558. To rejoice with a joy inexpressible.

  559. And even though there are things that will seek to take that joy away from us.

  560. Those trials that we go through.

  561. Peter is saying, refocus.

  562. Look to Jesus.

  563. Trust in him.

  564. Perhaps the greatest example of this kind of situation was Thomas.

  565. Another of the disciples.

  566. And after the resurrection, you read about it in John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  567. Thomas was there with, or he wasn't there when Jesus appeared to the other disciples.

  568. And Thomas said, unless I see, I will not believe.

  569. And a week later, he saw.

  570. And what did he say?

  571. He said, my Lord and my God.

  572. But what was Jesus' response to Thomas in John 20?

  573. He said, have you believed because you have seen me?

  574. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.

  575. Who was Jesus speaking to?

  576. Who did he have in mind?

  577. Those people Peter was writing to scattered far and wide.

  578. Those who had not seen him yet had not, but yet believed.

  579. And he's saying blessed.

  580. They are blessed.

  581. He's writing to his church down through all the generations.

  582. Church going through, God's people going through all their trials.

  583. We have not seen him, yet they have believed and are blessed.

  584. He's writing to ourselves today.

  585. We have not seen him, yet we have believed through eyes of faith.

  586. And we are blessed.

  587. So what helps us to see in all of these situations?

  588. It's the eyes of faith.

  589. Otherwise, we cannot see.

  590. I remember in school, and perhaps many of you experienced this as well,

  591. either through school or through having medicals for work.

  592. Part of the test you would go through would be an eyesight test, but also a colorblind test.

  593. And you'd be shown, maybe you opened a book that had all kinds of different colored dots on it,

  594. and there'd be a number or a shape that you had to recognize.

  595. And if you weren't colorblind, it was easy to see.

  596. You could see the numbers, maybe 25 or 16, and amongst all the dots.

  597. But to a colorblind person, there's nothing there.

  598. They cannot see.

  599. That colorblindness is hiding everything from them.

  600. It's impossible to see if they're colorblind.

  601. It doesn't mean it's not there.

  602. It is.

  603. And you could say to the person, look, it's there on the page,

  604. but because of their colorblindness, they just cannot see it.

  605. And it's the same when it comes to seeing Jesus.

  606. When we know him, we see him.

  607. Because he's opened our eyes.

  608. We've got eyes of faith.

  609. But all around us is a people who cannot.

  610. It's the gift of faith that enables us to see.

  611. And so what's our focus?

  612. During a time of recession and depression many years back,

  613. similar to the situation our own nation is finding ourselves in,

  614. or the world is finding itself in,

  615. there was a man who was asked to go and speak to a room of businessmen

  616. to try and get them to refocus in the midst of all of the challenges.

  617. And the man who was invited in to speak,

  618. he brought in a sheet of white paper,

  619. he put it up on a board,

  620. and he just proceeded to do a black dot with a pencil.

  621. He then asked the men in the room,

  622. what do you see?

  623. The first person replied, I see a black spot.

  624. The second person replied, I see a black spot.

  625. And so it went on, one after another,

  626. they all said, we see a black spot.

  627. The man, he had expected this.

  628. And he turned to them and said,

  629. yes, there is a black spot,

  630. but none of you are seeing the big sheet of white paper.

  631. Your focus is on the small instead of the greater.

  632. And that's really what Peter is saying here too.

  633. He's saying to us,

  634. our focus can be on the troubles and the trials of life.

  635. And that can be just like the dot.

  636. But the greater picture is that God has a plan and a purpose

  637. for better for all of his people.

  638. So we are to see through eyes of faith,

  639. things that others cannot see.

  640. We see through eyes of faith,

  641. to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.

  642. But we see too, as we go on here,

  643. we see through eyes of faith,

  644. what has been done.

  645. The eyes of faith help us to see clearly

  646. what has been done for us.

  647. How do you see yourself in life?

  648. What do you see in your life that you're happy with,

  649. that you're satisfied with?

  650. Or what do you see in your life

  651. that's maybe still lacking?

  652. Sometimes we are not seeing clearly

  653. and our focus is wrong.

  654. Just like the men in the room

  655. who all they could see was a black dot.

  656. Perhaps our focus is on the tiny thing in life

  657. that seems like the biggest issue in our life.

  658. Instead of focusing on the greater issue

  659. of who God is.

  660. It would be easy for those who Peter was writing to

  661. to just focus on the struggles

  662. and the problems around them.

  663. And to then be tempted just to forget about God

  664. and to find peace and joy

  665. in the things of this world.

  666. To begin to think that God isn't with us.

  667. We're going to have to go this alone

  668. and sort all this out for ourselves.

  669. God has disappeared out of you.

  670. He's not even with us

  671. in our greatest times of need.

  672. We're going to have to achieve our own salvation

  673. or fix eternity for ourselves.

  674. But verse 10 goes on here to say

  675. that we see this salvation.

  676. We see what has been done for us

  677. through eyes of faith.

  678. It begins in verse 9 really

  679. obtaining the outcome of your faith

  680. the salvation of your souls.

  681. What has been done for us

  682. through Christ on the cross.

  683. He paid a price that we could never pay

  684. for the salvation of our souls.

  685. And concerning this salvation

  686. the prophets who prophesied about the grace

  687. that was being to be yours

  688. searched and inquired carefully in the scriptures

  689. inquiring what person or time

  690. the spirit of Christ in them was indicating

  691. when he predicted the sufferings of Christ

  692. and the subsequent glories.

  693. The time of the sufferings of Christ.

  694. We see through eyes of faith

  695. what has been done for us.

  696. But do we believe it?

  697. That Christ died for our sins?

  698. That he rose again on the third day?

  699. That he is coming again?

  700. Can we better anything

  701. that he has done for us?

  702. No.

  703. We could never achieve any of it for ourselves.

  704. But maybe for some it just sounds too simple.

  705. Sounds too easy.

  706. We live in a world

  707. where everything is instant and quick.

  708. Fast food is just becoming more and more.

  709. Microwave meals

  710. so that everything is done quickly.

  711. Well back in the day

  712. when they first started

  713. bringing these kinds of things out

  714. a company had produced

  715. an instant cake mix.

  716. You see it more and more now.

  717. Everything is in one packet.

  718. You pour it into a bowl.

  719. Mix it together.

  720. And it's all done for you.

  721. Well when they first started

  722. producing these things

  723. a company had done this

  724. and the instructions said

  725. just add water and bake.

  726. But they weren't selling.

  727. Nobody seemed interested in them.

  728. They were buying public.

  729. We were uneasy about this.

  730. A mix that all you had to do

  731. was add water.

  732. And so the people thought

  733. the company thought

  734. we've got to do something about this.

  735. So they added another instruction.

  736. They changed the formula.

  737. And instead of just add water

  738. they said add an egg

  739. and water and bake.

  740. And all of a sudden

  741. people began to buy.

  742. It became very popular.

  743. Sales jumped dramatically.

  744. It just sounded too easy initially.

  745. And so they changed the formula.

  746. It was too good to be true.

  747. And in many ways

  748. that's the way the gospel is to some as well.

  749. The gospel tells us

  750. the good news preached

  751. that all we have to do is believe.

  752. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ

  753. and you will be saved.

  754. But it can't be that easy

  755. can it?

  756. Surely there's something

  757. we have to add into the mix

  758. ourselves

  759. to make a difference

  760. to make it right.

  761. Well the gospel is saying

  762. no.

  763. All you have to do

  764. is believe.

  765. Faith

  766. is the gift of God.

  767. It's not of anything

  768. we've done ourselves.

  769. It is the gift

  770. we receive

  771. through faith.

  772. The salvation

  773. of our souls.

  774. The Bible is clear.

  775. We're not saved

  776. by anything

  777. we add ourselves

  778. into the mix.

  779. We are saved

  780. through faith.

  781. Through the sufferings

  782. of Christ.

  783. And then

  784. the subsequent

  785. glories.

  786. Unlike the cake

  787. manufactured

  788. God doesn't change

  789. anything

  790. in this formula.

  791. It's the same

  792. today

  793. as it ever was.

  794. Jesus.

  795. But how is your vision?

  796. How is your eyesight

  797. when it comes to this?

  798. Are you still thinking

  799. but

  800. surely I've got to do

  801. something.

  802. Surely there's something

  803. I need to do

  804. to finish off

  805. this formula

  806. this mix.

  807. No.

  808. It's all

  809. done.

  810. So how do you

  811. see your life

  812. and what is

  813. your focus?

  814. Well Peter

  815. is saying

  816. our focus

  817. is to be on Christ

  818. and his finished work.

  819. He has done it all.

  820. It is complete.

  821. An old man

  822. was once sharing

  823. with a young friend

  824. about his own

  825. experience

  826. in life.

  827. Looking back

  828. over many years

  829. he said

  830. son

  831. I'd like to tell you

  832. about my life.

  833. He began by saying

  834. I was born

  835. into this world

  836. as a sinner.

  837. I was baptized

  838. soon after I was born

  839. and I became

  840. a baptized sinner.

  841. As I grew older

  842. I wandered away

  843. from the church

  844. and found pleasure

  845. in the things

  846. of this world

  847. and I became

  848. a sinful sinner.

  849. However

  850. he said

  851. I began to realize

  852. that my life

  853. needed to change

  854. and I needed

  855. to do something

  856. and so I started

  857. attending church

  858. and he said

  859. I became

  860. a church

  861. attending sinner.

  862. Then he said

  863. one happy day

  864. my life

  865. was transformed

  866. when I accepted

  867. Jesus Christ

  868. as my own

  869. personal

  870. saviour

  871. and I became

  872. a saved

  873. sinner.

  874. You know

  875. son

  876. he said

  877. a saved sinner

  878. is the only kind

  879. of sinner

  880. that can find

  881. real joy.

  882. And the Lord

  883. will welcome

  884. him

  885. into heaven.

  886. Does that

  887. life

  888. experience

  889. does it resonate

  890. with you?

  891. Maybe that's the way

  892. your life

  893. has been

  894. to baptize

  895. going into the world

  896. and going your own way

  897. becoming a sinful

  898. sinner.

  899. Maybe then

  900. starting to come back

  901. to church

  902. and thinking

  903. that's what's going

  904. to make the difference.

  905. But you're still

  906. just a church

  907. attending sinner.

  908. sinner.

  909. The key is

  910. seeing Jesus

  911. and believing

  912. in him

  913. loving him

  914. with all your heart

  915. still a sinner

  916. but becoming

  917. a saved sinner.

  918. When we see

  919. what has been

  920. done

  921. for us

  922. that is what

  923. we are to look

  924. upon.

  925. That's what can

  926. fill us with joy

  927. inexpressible

  928. through faith

  929. through eyes

  930. of faith

  931. seeing

  932. what Christ

  933. has done.

  934. So our eyes

  935. are to be fixed

  936. on him.

  937. The final thing

  938. we see here

  939. then is

  940. what others

  941. long for.

  942. As you look

  943. at verse

  944. 12

  945. well

  946. 10 through to 12

  947. really

  948. but verse 12

  949. it says

  950. it was revealed

  951. to them

  952. that they were

  953. serving not

  954. themselves

  955. but you

  956. speaking about

  957. the prophets

  958. of old

  959. and the things

  960. that have now

  961. been announced

  962. to you

  963. through those

  964. who preach

  965. the good news

  966. to you

  967. by the Holy Spirit

  968. sent from heaven

  969. things into which

  970. angels

  971. long

  972. to look.

  973. In these verses

  974. from verse 10

  975. to 12

  976. there's

  977. people

  978. various people

  979. and even the angels

  980. looking to see

  981. what is being said

  982. in this word.

  983. And what's the

  984. greatest gift

  985. anyone has ever

  986. given to you?

  987. There may be

  988. many things

  989. in life

  990. that you

  991. hold precious

  992. gifts

  993. that have

  994. been given

  995. to you

  996. that are

  997. precious

  998. maybe a

  999. piece of

  1000. jewelry

  1001. a perfume

  1002. keys to a

  1003. car

  1004. an item

  1005. of technology

  1006. there are

  1007. many things

  1008. that we can

  1009. appreciate

  1010. in life

  1011. and we

  1012. give great

  1013. thanks for

  1014. well Peter

  1015. is reminding

  1016. a people

  1017. here

  1018. a people

  1019. who had

  1020. very little

  1021. in the sense

  1022. of gifts

  1023. in the way

  1024. that we enjoy

  1025. so much

  1026. but he is

  1027. reminding them

  1028. that all

  1029. that they

  1030. have

  1031. is right

  1032. before them

  1033. and for

  1034. ourselves

  1035. today

  1036. the greatest

  1037. gift

  1038. we can

  1039. have

  1040. is right

  1041. before

  1042. us

  1043. the word

  1044. of God

  1045. and I'm

  1046. sure at

  1047. some point

  1048. along the

  1049. way

  1050. you've

  1051. received

  1052. a bible

  1053. it may

  1054. have been

  1055. in Sunday

  1056. school

  1057. or school

  1058. may have

  1059. been through

  1060. the Gideons

  1061. distributing them

  1062. it may have

  1063. been through

  1064. a family

  1065. member

  1066. or a friend

  1067. who's given

  1068. you a bible

  1069. and maybe

  1070. written a little

  1071. message in the

  1072. front of it

  1073. it's lovely

  1074. to receive

  1075. them

  1076. and why

  1077. has that

  1078. person

  1079. given it

  1080. to you

  1081. why have

  1082. you received

  1083. it

  1084. because the

  1085. one who is

  1086. giving it

  1087. knows

  1088. the difference

  1089. it can

  1090. make

  1091. it is the

  1092. word of

  1093. God

  1094. that can

  1095. help us

  1096. to see

  1097. and to

  1098. truly

  1099. see

  1100. and it

  1101. comes

  1102. with a

  1103. love

  1104. and a

  1105. longing

  1106. that you

  1107. would

  1108. search

  1109. and know

  1110. the

  1111. Christ

  1112. that it

  1113. speaks

  1114. of

  1115. just as

  1116. Peter

  1117. is writing

  1118. to them

  1119. in the

  1120. midst

  1121. of their

  1122. trials

  1123. it's not

  1124. so their

  1125. focus will

  1126. be on

  1127. the

  1128. trials

  1129. but that

  1130. they lift

  1131. their eyes

  1132. and see

  1133. Jesus

  1134. in the

  1135. midst

  1136. of it

  1137. and that

  1138. is the

  1139. longing

  1140. that we

  1141. have

  1142. for one

  1143. another

  1144. too I

  1145. hope

  1146. that we

  1147. would come

  1148. to see

  1149. Jesus

  1150. when you

  1151. see it

  1152. spoken of

  1153. here

  1154. concerning

  1155. this

  1156. salvation

  1157. the prophets

  1158. who prophesied

  1159. about the

  1160. grace that

  1161. was to be

  1162. yours

  1163. searched

  1164. and inquired

  1165. carefully

  1166. they went

  1167. and they

  1168. looked

  1169. into this

  1170. word

  1171. the question

  1172. is

  1173. have you

  1174. have you

  1175. inquired

  1176. and searched

  1177. diligently

  1178. this word

  1179. and what

  1180. do you

  1181. see in

  1182. it

  1183. do you

  1184. just

  1185. hear it

  1186. and put

  1187. it on

  1188. the shelf

  1189. to the

  1190. next

  1191. time

  1192. or will

  1193. you take

  1194. it away

  1195. and search

  1196. diligently

  1197. and even

  1198. like

  1199. Bartimaeus

  1200. of old

  1201. cry out

  1202. to Jesus

  1203. son of

  1204. David

  1205. have

  1206. mercy

  1207. on me

  1208. help

  1209. me

  1210. that I

  1211. might

  1212. see

  1213. give

  1214. me a

  1215. vision

  1216. of faith

  1217. to see

  1218. in the

  1219. midst

  1220. of everything

  1221. in life

  1222. how precious

  1223. you are

  1224. if you

  1225. are seeking

  1226. a way

  1227. in this

  1228. world

  1229. to know

  1230. eternal

  1231. life

  1232. and the

  1233. blessing

  1234. of Christ

  1235. come

  1236. and search

  1237. this word

  1238. diligently

  1239. and don't

  1240. let it

  1241. go

  1242. don't put

  1243. it on

  1244. the shelf

  1245. take it

  1246. out and

  1247. read it

  1248. through

  1249. and see

  1250. to yourself

  1251. what it

  1252. says about

  1253. the way

  1254. to life

  1255. and the way

  1256. everlasting

  1257. it is

  1258. found

  1259. in Christ

  1260. Jesus

  1261. so if

  1262. you are

  1263. seeking

  1264. seek

  1265. inquire

  1266. diligently

  1267. even though

  1268. you do

  1269. not see

  1270. him

  1271. you can

  1272. come

  1273. to love

  1274. him

  1275. and rejoice

  1276. with joy

  1277. inexpressible

  1278. obtaining

  1279. the salvation

  1280. of your

  1281. souls

  1282. the greatest

  1283. thing you

  1284. can ever

  1285. know

  1286. the joy

  1287. of Christ

  1288. and if

  1289. you are a

  1290. Christian

  1291. today

  1292. what will

  1293. you do

  1294. with this

  1295. word

  1296. are you

  1297. going to

  1298. take it

  1299. home

  1300. and put

  1301. it back

  1302. on the

  1303. shelf

  1304. until the

  1305. next time

  1306. we meet

  1307. or is it

  1308. your meat

  1309. day by

  1310. day

  1311. is it

  1312. your sustenance

  1313. day by

  1314. day

  1315. is it

  1316. your longing

  1317. and your

  1318. desire

  1319. not just

  1320. that you

  1321. will know

  1322. it better

  1323. but that

  1324. others

  1325. will know

  1326. it

  1327. that others

  1328. will come

  1329. and see

  1330. the beauty

  1331. of Christ

  1332. it's a story

  1333. told of a

  1334. missionary

  1335. who was a

  1336. physician

  1337. who went

  1338. to China

  1339. and was

  1340. working in

  1341. the hospitals

  1342. there

  1343. he was an

  1344. eye specialist

  1345. and back

  1346. in the days

  1347. when he went

  1348. there many

  1349. people were

  1350. blind

  1351. because of

  1352. cataracts

  1353. they couldn't

  1354. see

  1355. and one

  1356. man came

  1357. to this

  1358. physician's

  1359. hospital

  1360. and was

  1361. cured

  1362. of his

  1363. blindness

  1364. and he

  1365. rejoiced

  1366. that he

  1367. was able

  1368. to see

  1369. and he

  1370. went away

  1371. rejoicing

  1372. well a

  1373. fortnight

  1374. later

  1375. 48

  1376. blind

  1377. men

  1378. came

  1379. with him

  1380. to the

  1381. doctor

  1382. out of

  1383. the

  1384. wilderness

  1385. out of

  1386. the

  1387. wilds

  1388. they

  1389. came

  1390. to them

  1391. holding

  1392. onto

  1393. a rope

  1394. the one

  1395. who had

  1396. been given

  1397. his vision

  1398. back at

  1399. the front

  1400. leading

  1401. the way

  1402. leading

  1403. the other

  1404. 48 blind

  1405. men

  1406. behind

  1407. him

  1408. holding

  1409. onto

  1410. the rope

  1411. he brought

  1412. them

  1413. to the

  1414. physician

  1415. who was

  1416. able

  1417. to cure

  1418. they had

  1419. walked

  1420. 250

  1421. miles

  1422. why did

  1423. he do

  1424. it

  1425. because he

  1426. knew

  1427. who could

  1428. help them

  1429. to see

  1430. he knew

  1431. who could

  1432. give them

  1433. their vision

  1434. back

  1435. and Christian

  1436. today

  1437. if your eyes

  1438. have been

  1439. opened

  1440. if you have

  1441. eyes of

  1442. faith

  1443. you have a

  1444. great gift

  1445. to give

  1446. to others

  1447. to say

  1448. come

  1449. see a

  1450. man who

  1451. knows

  1452. everything

  1453. about

  1454. could

  1455. this be

  1456. the

  1457. Christ

  1458. may we

  1459. come

  1460. and see

  1461. through

  1462. eyes

  1463. of

  1464. faith

  1465. the

  1466. things

  1467. that

  1468. others

  1469. can't

  1470. the

  1471. things

  1472. that

  1473. have

  1474. been

  1475. done

  1476. for

  1477. us

  1478. and

  1479. the

  1480. things

  1481. that

  1482. others

  1483. long

  1484. for

  1485. to

  1486. see

  1487. as

  1488. Bartimaeus

  1489. saw

  1490. to

  1491. see

  1492. Jesus

  1493. with

  1494. eyes

  1495. of

  1496. faith

  1497. and

  1498. follow

  1499. him

  1500. on

  1501. the

  1502. way

  1503. yes

  1504. there

  1505. are

  1506. many

  1507. challenges

  1508. around

  1509. us

  1510. there

  1511. are

  1512. many

  1513. troubles

  1514. and our

  1515. focus

  1516. can so

  1517. often

  1518. be

  1519. on

  1520. that

  1521. but

  1522. let's

  1523. see

  1524. the

  1525. greater

  1526. let's

  1527. lift

  1528. let's

  1529. let's

  1530. see

  1531. Jesus

  1532. and the

  1533. hope

  1534. that he

  1535. gives

  1536. in the

  1537. midst

  1538. of

  1539. everything

  1540. and

  1541. rejoice

  1542. with joy

  1543. inexpressible

  1544. that he

  1545. has gone

  1546. before us

  1547. to show

  1548. the way

  1549. to eternal

  1550. life but to

  1551. lead us

  1552. in that

  1553. way

  1554. everlasting

  1555. let us

  1556. pray

  1557. our father

  1558. in heaven

  1559. we do

  1560. rejoice

  1561. in your

  1562. goodness

  1563. to us

  1564. for all

  1565. that you

  1566. have done

  1567. for us

  1568. and that

  1569. even though

  1570. we do

  1571. not see

  1572. you

  1573. we can

  1574. love you

  1575. with all

  1576. our hearts

  1577. and rejoice

  1578. with a joy

  1579. inexpressible

  1580. that comes

  1581. through

  1582. seeing

  1583. through

  1584. eyes

  1585. of

  1586. faith

  1587. we

  1588. acknowledge

  1589. our

  1590. blindness

  1591. so often

  1592. and like

  1593. Bartimaeus

  1594. of old

  1595. we cry

  1596. Jesus

  1597. son of

  1598. David

  1599. have

  1600. mercy

  1601. on me

  1602. and help

  1603. us to

  1604. see

  1605. the beauty

  1606. of Christ

  1607. and all

  1608. his glory

  1609. for we

  1610. ask it

  1611. in his

  1612. precious

  1613. name

  1614. Amen

  1615. we're going

  1616. to conclude

  1617. by singing

  1618. to God's

  1619. praise

  1620. in Psalm

  1621. 25

  1622. the first

  1623. version of

  1624. the psalm

  1625. in the

  1626. Scottish

  1627. Psalter

  1628. page

  1629. 231

  1630. to thee

  1631. I lift

  1632. my soul

  1633. O Lord

  1634. I trust

  1635. in thee

  1636. my God

  1637. let me

  1638. not be

  1639. ashamed

  1640. nor foes

  1641. triumph

  1642. for me

  1643. we'll sing

  1644. from verse

  1645. 1

  1646. to the end

  1647. of verse

  1648. 5

  1649. to God's

  1650. praise

  1651. on

  1652. let me

  1653. not

  1654. be

  1655. ashamed

1656. Now to save for me.

1657. Work down the day of日,

  1658. говорить for tooth shape,

  1659. Ochocam,

1660. The Lord, who stand with thy cross transgress, let shame upon them fall.

1661. Don't take thy grace, O Lord, thy past, Lord, teach thou me.

1662. And do thou lead me in my truth, and my teacher be.

1663. For thou art all the dust, to thee salvation's end.

1664. And I have all thee all the day, expecting to attain.

1665. After the benediction, I'll go to the door to my left.

1666. We'll close with the benediction.

1667. Now may grace, mercy, and peace from God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, rest upon and

1668. abide with you all, now and forevermore.

  1669. Amen.

  1670. Amen.

  1671. Amen.

  1672. Amen.

  1673. Amen.
