  1. The book of Exodus chapter 17, and we may read again at verse 8.

    Exodus 17 chapter mention

  2. Exodus chapter 17, reading at verse 8.

    Exodus 17 chapter mention

  3. Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim.

  4. Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim.

  5. When the Israelite people were miraculously delivered from their Egyptian oppression,

  6. the first enemies they faced were not external, but internal.

  7. Their first enemies were themselves.

  8. Their struggle was with themselves, as the Lord showed them, their own hearts.

  9. And I would like to suggest that it is still the same to the present hour.

  10. Our struggles are mainly from within and not from without.

  11. Now, you may challenge that, but I think if you are any length of time on the Christian path,

  12. you will know the truth of that statement.

  13. You remember how the Apostle Paul writes about the inward strife that left him struggling time after time.

  14. I see, he says, and my members, another law waging war against the law of my mind,

  15. and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.

  16. It wasn't just that he saw it, but that it brought him into captivity.

  17. Wretched man that I am, who will deliver me from this body of death,

  18. as if he were carrying about a dead body attached to his person.

  19. Well, Israel, during their relatively short period in the desert,

  20. had encountered genuine difficulties.

  21. They came to Mara, and the water was undrinkable, causing them to complain.

  22. And you can appreciate how precious water was when you were in a dry, arid area.

  23. And they must have been looking forward to arriving at this place,

  24. only to be bitterly disappointed by the quality of the water.

  25. God made it drinkable by another miracle.

  26. Then it was lack of food that made them grumble.

  27. And again, God provided them with manna.

  28. The difficulty experienced earlier in this chapter

  29. was that they were faced not with undrinkable water,

  30. but with a lack of water,

  31. either because the water was not there,

  32. or if it was there,

  33. they had no access to it.

  34. And you can make your mind up.

  35. Which of these two possibilities is true?

  36. Because the Bible doesn't really disclose what it was.

  37. Such was their ire that Moses was fearful for his own life.

  38. He thought they were going to stone him.

  39. They didn't trust God to provide.

  40. In fact, they wanted God put on trial.

  41. As they interpreted matters,

  42. God had failed them miserably.

  43. And yet again,

  44. God graciously and marvelously provides

  45. by bringing water from a most unexpected source,

  46. a rock.

  47. And you know from your New Testament

  48. that the New Testament interprets the rock

  49. as Christ.

  50. And there is a sermon there.

  51. Incidentally,

  52. there is no indication of thanks

  53. for such fulsome and gracious provision.

  54. And I wonder how often

  55. are we guilty of the sale

  56. when the Lord has intervened

  57. marvelously and miraculously in our lives,

  58. when we have been pleading,

  59. perhaps for help,

  60. and how forgetful we are

  61. to give thanks when he responds.

  62. Well, I'd like to bring three thoughts before you.

  63. That's just the background

  64. to our text this evening.

  65. First, conflict at Rephidim.

  66. Secondly, countering hostility.

  67. And thirdly, celebrating

  68. the celebration of victory.

  69. Conflict at Rephidim.

  70. Countering hostility.

  71. And the celebration of victory.

  72. Conflict at Rephidim.

  73. The writer tells us,

  74. Moses, we accept as the writer.

  75. The people of Israel

  76. were physically attacked

  77. from without

  78. by those who were hostile to them.

  79. Remember?

  80. Up until now,

  81. their problems arose from themselves.

  82. We read,

  83. Amalek came and fought with Israel

  84. at Rephidim.

  85. This was Israel's

  86. first experience

  87. of our military encounter.

  88. The Amalekites

  89. were a nomadic people.

  90. They could trace their ancestry

  91. back to Jacob's twin brother,

  92. Esau.

  93. In the book of Genesis,

  94. we find this information.

  95. These are the names of Esau's sons.

  96. Eliphaz, the son of Adah,

  97. the wife of Esau.

  98. And then you find Timnah

  99. was a concubine of Eliphaz,

  100. Esau's son.

  101. She bore Amalek

  102. to Eliphaz.

  103. And I suppose

  104. you could argue

  105. that there was a long-standing

  106. ethnic tension

  107. between the two peoples,

  108. given their ancestry.

  109. People of Israel

  110. tracing their ancestry

  111. back to Jacob

  112. and the Amalekites

  113. back to his twin brother.

  114. The writer doesn't suggest

  115. a specific reason

  116. why these Amalekites

  117. attacked Israel

  118. at this precise moment.

  119. May have been

  120. because of the long-standing

  121. ethnic tensions.

  122. It is also possible

  123. that they may have felt

  124. threatened by the

  125. sudden arrival

  126. of all these people

  127. in their territory.

  128. They may have seen them

  129. as a threat

  130. to their own existence

  131. by coming

  132. to the places

  133. which they themselves

  134. frequented for water.

  135. Water being such

  136. a precious commodity

  137. in the desert,

  138. Rephidim,

  139. was an oasis.

  140. But the writer

  141. doesn't tell us

  142. why they were attacked.

  143. There may be one more reason

  144. for the attack.

  145. The impression created,

  146. at least in my own mind,

  147. is that it was,

  148. that it happened

  149. very unexpectedly.

  150. Then Amalek came

  151. and fought with Israel.

  152. When did Amalek

  153. come

  154. and fight

  155. with Israel?

  156. Was it not just

  157. after the Israelites

  158. had given expression,

  159. vehement expression,

  160. to their disgruntlement

  161. with God,

  162. threatening to stone

  163. their leader?

  164. So,

  165. I cannot rule out

  166. that this

  167. unexpected,

  168. sudden attack

  169. was indirectly

  170. provoked

  171. by themselves

  172. on account

  173. of their behavior.

  174. Be that as it may,

  175. we cannot

  176. remind ourselves

  177. too often

  178. that the Bible

  179. does not record

  180. historical events

  181. just for the sake

  182. of giving us

  183. a history lesson.

  184. The history

  185. in the Bible

  186. has spiritual meaning,

  187. from which

  188. spiritual applications

  189. can be made.

  190. And I would

  191. therefore like

  192. to suggest

  193. a reason

  194. from the New Testament

  195. for this

  196. actual

  197. physical attack

  198. by Amalek.

  199. In Paul's letter

  200. to the Ephesians,

  201. he writes

  202. twice in the same

  203. context

  204. of the need

  205. of putting on

  206. the whole

  207. armor of God.

  208. He is addressing

  209. the church,

  210. believers,

  211. and the reason

  212. he gives

  213. for the need

  214. to put on

  215. the whole

  216. armor of God

  217. is

  218. that you may

  219. be able

  220. to stand

  221. against the

  222. schemes

  223. of the devil.

  224. And then

  225. he goes on

  226. to tell,

  227. for we do

  228. not wrestle

  229. against flesh

  230. and blood,

  231. but against

  232. the rulers,

  233. against the

  234. authorities,

  235. against the

  236. cosmic powers

  237. over this

  238. present darkness,

  239. against the

  240. spiritual forces

  241. of evil

  242. in the heavenly

  243. places.

  244. Now remember,

  245. the people

  246. of Israel

  247. represent

  248. the church

  249. of Christ

  250. in the world,

  251. a people

  252. who are

  253. a direct

  254. result

  255. of divine

  256. intervention

  257. and deliverance,

  258. a people

  259. who are

  260. being led

  261. by God

  262. and who

  263. are actually

  264. instructed

  265. by the

  266. Lord to

  267. come to

  268. Rephidim.

  269. Verse 1

  270. in the chapter

  271. tells us,

  272. all the

  273. congregation

  274. of the

  275. people of

  276. Israel

  277. moved on

  278. from the

  279. wilderness

  280. of sin

  281. by stages

  282. according to

  283. the commandment

  284. of the

  285. Lord

  286. and

  287. camped

  288. at Rephidim.

  289. They didn't

  290. choose

  291. to come

  292. to this

  293. destination

  294. in

  295. flagrant

  296. disobedience

  297. to the

  298. command of

  299. God.

  300. They

  301. moved there

  302. in accord

  303. with God's

  304. instruction.

  305. What could

  306. possibly

  307. go wrong?

  308. They were

  309. merely

  310. following

  311. divine

  312. instructions.

  313. And then

  314. we read,

  315. Amalek

  316. came

  317. and fought.

  318. Why?

  319. Well,

  320. could I

  321. suggest

  322. it is

  323. because

  324. the devil

  325. hates

  326. God

  327. and

  328. he

  329. hates

  330. those

  331. who

  332. represent

  333. God

  334. in the

  335. world.

  336. He

  337. seeks

  338. to

  339. destroy

  340. God's

  341. workmanship.

  342. You

  343. know how

  344. peoples

  345. tend to

  346. be proud

  347. of their

  348. ancestry

  349. and that

  350. pride

  351. can lead

  352. to jealousy,

  353. envy,

  354. and opposition

  355. and very

  356. often along

  357. with pride

  358. you get

  359. greed and

  360. selfishness.

  361. And you

  362. can see

  363. that

  364. in many

  365. of the

  366. wars

  367. that

  368. have

  369. started

  370. in the

  371. world,

  372. how

  373. you

  374. can

  375. find

  376. these

  377. elements

  378. as it

  379. were

  380. foundational

  381. to the

  382. beginning

  383. of such

  384. wars.

  385. But

  386. if you

  387. dig

  388. down

  389. deep

  390. enough

  391. and

  392. you

  393. discover

  394. that

  395. all

  396. of

  397. these

  398. reasons

  399. are

  400. the

  401. forces

  402. of

  403. darkness

  404. seeking

  405. to

  406. hinder

  407. and

  408. even

  409. repress

  410. the

  411. work

  412. of

  413. light.

  414. Spreading

  415. confusion

  416. is a

  417. tactic

  418. favored

  419. by the

  420. forces

  421. of

  422. darkness.

  423. The

  424. attack

  425. in this

  426. instance

  427. was

  428. somewhat

  429. cowardly.

  430. How do

  431. we

  432. know?

  433. Well,

  434. in the

  435. book of

  436. Deuteronomy

  437. you find

  438. Moses

  439. writing,

  440. remember

  441. what

  442. Amalek

  443. did to

  444. you as

  445. he's

  446. speaking to

  447. Israel,

  448. on the

  449. way as

  450. you came

  451. out of

  452. Egypt,

  453. how he

  454. attacked

  455. you on

  456. the way

  457. when you

  458. were fed

  459. and weary

  460. and cut

  461. off your

  462. tail,

  463. those who

  464. were lagging

  465. behind you,

  466. and he

  467. did not

  468. fear God.

  469. not only

  470. was the

  471. attack

  472. unprovoked,

  473. humanly

  474. speaking,

  475. in the

  476. sense that

  477. Israel didn't

  478. go out of

  479. their way

  480. to provoke

  481. Amalek,

  482. but the

  483. attack was

  484. aimed

  485. against the

  486. weak,

  487. the

  488. vulnerable,

  489. the

  490. helpless,

  491. the

  492. strugglers

  493. at the

  494. tail end

  495. of the

  496. procession,

  497. usually

  498. defenseless

  499. women and

  500. children,

  501. and possibly

  502. the frail

  503. elderly.

  504. Now,

  505. it may

  506. have been

  507. that Israel

  508. thought there

  509. was no real

  510. danger to

  511. those at

  512. the end

  513. of the

  514. procession.

  515. The

  516. pursuing

  517. Egyptian

  518. forces had

  519. been destroyed

  520. at the

  521. Red Sea.

  522. But you

  523. note it

  524. was the

  525. most

  526. vulnerable

  527. who were

  528. attacked,

  529. and it

  530. happened

  531. possibly

  532. where it

  533. was least

  534. expected.

  535. Now,

  536. we can

  537. apply

  538. that.

  539. Many

  540. things in

  541. life can

  542. leave us

  543. vulnerable to

  544. spiritual

  545. attack,

  546. our pride,

  547. an inflated

  548. view of

  549. ourselves,

  550. lack of

  551. prayer

  552. dependency,

  553. and when we

  554. are vulnerable,

  555. you can be

  556. sure that

  557. these attacks

  558. will

  559. intensify.

  560. will be

  561. the

  562. clue,

  563. surely,

  564. to what

  565. lay behind

  566. this

  567. cowardly

  568. attack

  569. lies in

  570. the words,

  571. he, that

  572. is Amalek,

  573. did not

  574. fear God.

  575. What a

  576. coup for

  577. Satan,

  578. if he

  579. could

  580. prevent

  581. the

  582. children

  583. of Israel

  584. from

  585. reaching the

  586. promised

  587. land.

  588. Here are

  589. the forces

  590. of darkness

  591. using

  592. guerrilla

  593. tactics to

  594. ambush

  595. and deter

  596. the

  597. progression

  598. of the

  599. church

  600. in the

  601. world.

  602. And that,

  603. I believe,

  604. is still

  605. ongoing.

  606. It would

  607. be a huge

  608. mistake

  609. on our

  610. part to

  611. think

  612. otherwise.

  613. Our

  614. real enemy,

  615. it's not

  616. other people,

  617. it's the

  618. forces of

  619. darkness

  620. who will

  621. keep

  622. attacking

  623. you,

  624. yes,

  625. even use

  626. people to

  627. further their

  628. aims, and

  629. of course,

  630. you don't

  631. have to

  632. go further

  633. than Calvary

  634. to see

  635. how the

  636. forces of

  637. darkness

  638. manipulated

  639. people

  640. seeking

  641. to destroy

  642. Christ

  643. in the

  644. world.

  645. And they

  646. do that

  647. to you

  648. and me

  649. in the

  650. hope that

  651. we will

  652. do something

  653. to dishonor

  654. God.

  655. Our

  656. demise

  657. then becomes

  658. the food

  659. of those

  660. hostile

  661. hostile

  662. to the

  663. cause of

  664. Christ.

  665. One

  666. glaring

  667. example in

  668. the Bible

  669. is a

  670. man who

  671. began

  672. well,

  673. who had

  674. a great

  675. reputation,

  676. a man by

  677. the name

  678. of Samson.

  679. And the

  680. Bible tells

  681. us the

  682. Philistine

  683. seized him,

  684. gouged out

  685. his eyes,

  686. because in

  687. a moment

  688. of weakness,

  689. rather than

  690. trusting the

  691. Almighty,

  692. he trusted

  693. his fellow

  694. creature,

  695. gouged out

  696. his eyes

  697. and brought

  698. him down

  699. to Gaza

  700. and bound

  701. him with

  702. bronze shackles.

  703. This is the

  704. point.

  705. And he

  706. ground at

  707. the mill

  708. in the

  709. prison.

  710. Now there

  711. he was

  712. being used

  713. as a

  714. source of

  715. providing

  716. food for

  717. the very

  718. people he

  719. had been

  720. engaged in

  721. destroying.

  722. And now

  723. they were

  724. being fed

  725. by his

  726. efforts.

  727. Well,

  728. that hasn't

  729. changed.

  730. The world

  731. still feeds

  732. on the

  733. fall of

  734. God's

  735. people and

  736. the world.

  737. Conflict

  738. at

  739. Rephidim.

  740. A hostile

  741. encounter

  742. and brings

  743. me to

  744. my second

  745. point,

  746. countering

  747. hostility.

  748. The

  749. chapter

  750. informs

  751. us how

  752. Israel

  753. launched a

  754. counter-attack.

  755. Moses

  756. addressing

  757. Joshua,

  758. choose for

  759. his men,

  760. go out

  761. and fight

  762. with Amalek.

  763. Tomorrow I

  764. will stand,

  765. says Moses,

  766. on the top

  767. of the hill

  768. with the

  769. staff of

  770. God in

  771. my hand.

  772. So

  773. Joshua

  774. obeyed.

  775. He did

  776. as Moses

  777. told him,

  778. fought with

  779. Amalek,

  780. while Moses,

  781. Aaron,

  782. and her

  783. went up

  784. to the

  785. top of

  786. the hill.

  787. Fascinating

  788. how the

  789. writer,

  790. well,

  791. Aaron,

  792. we know,

  793. was related

  794. to Moses,

  795. but her,

  796. he's just

  797. introduced

  798. as if we

  799. ought to

  800. know who

  801. he is.

  802. Joshua

  803. goes to

  804. the

  805. battlefield.

  806. The

  807. hostile

  808. forces

  809. had to

  810. be

  811. engaged.

  812. They

  813. fought in

  814. the

  815. valley.

  816. Moses

  817. was up

  818. on the

  819. top of

  820. the hill.

  821. Verse

  822. 11 tells

  823. us,

  824. whenever

  825. Moses held

  826. up his

  827. hand,

  828. Israel

  829. prevailed.

  830. When

  831. his hand

  832. lowered,

  833. Amalek

  834. prevailed.

  835. And does

  836. that not

  837. indicate to

  838. us,

  839. whatever

  840. Moses was

  841. doing on

  842. the hilltop

  843. is connected

  844. with the

  845. fortunes

  846. of the

  847. fighting men

  848. on the

  849. battlefield in

  850. the valley.

  851. Some might

  852. suggest that

  853. he was

  854. merely

  855. directing

  856. the fighting

  857. men in

  858. the valley

  859. below from

  860. his vantage

  861. point on

  862. the hilltop.

  863. and when

  864. I

  865. think of

  866. that view,

  867. I think

  868. of Moses

  869. almost like

  870. a choir

  871. conductor.

  872. And I

  873. would

  874. discount

  875. that

  876. immediately

  877. for one

  878. simple

  879. reason.

  880. Moses

  881. held the

  882. staff of

  883. God in

  884. his hand.

  885. Tomorrow I

  886. will stand

  887. on the

  888. top of

  889. the hill

  890. with the

  891. staff of

  892. God in

  893. my hand.

  894. member

  895. of the

  896. staff has

  897. history.

  898. It was

  899. instrumental

  900. in the

  901. displays of

  902. divine power

  903. connected

  904. with the

  905. exodus.

  906. And so

  907. therefore I

  908. understand

  909. Moses'

  910. uplifted

  911. hand to

  912. be symbolic

  913. of

  914. intercessory

  915. prayer.

  916. Now you

  917. may tell

  918. me there

  919. is no

  920. word of

  921. prayer in

  922. the passage.

  923. but if

  924. you look

  925. through your

  926. Bible you

  927. will find

  928. that the

  929. uplifting

  930. of the

  931. hand is

  932. a symbol

  933. for prayer.

  934. For example

  935. in the

  936. Psalms,

  937. the very

  938. first Psalm

  939. that we

  940. sang this

  941. evening,

  942. so I

  943. will bless

  944. you as

  945. long as

  946. I live

  947. in your

  948. name.

  949. I will

  950. lift up

  951. my hands.

  952. What was

  953. the psalmist

  954. doing there?

  955. He was

  956. engaging in

  957. prayer,

  958. engaging in

  959. wrestling with

  960. God.

  961. And then

  962. the second

  963. Psalm that

  964. we sang,

  965. let my

  966. prayer be

  967. counted as

  968. incense before

  969. you,

  970. and the

  971. lifting up

  972. of my

  973. hands as

  974. the evening

  975. sacrifice.

  976. What took

  977. place when

  978. the evening

  979. sacrifice was

  980. being offered

  981. up?

  982. There was

  983. prayer on

  984. the part

  985. of the

  986. priests.

  987. And although

  988. there is no

  989. record of

  990. what Moses

  991. said,

  992. the inference

  993. is that

  994. Moses' actions

  995. on the

  996. hilltop

  997. were an

  998. unmistakable

  999. sign of

  1000. dependence on

  1001. God alone

  1002. to win the

  1003. battle.

  1004. In holding

  1005. the rod up

  1006. to heaven,

  1007. he was

  1008. appealing for

  1009. God to

  1010. defend his

  1011. people.

  1012. Yes,

  1013. men were

  1014. selected for

  1015. battle.

  1016. And again,

  1017. the writer

  1018. doesn't go

  1019. into detail

  1020. of their

  1021. skills or

  1022. their

  1023. suitability.

  1024. None of

  1025. that is

  1026. revealed.

  1027. Yet despite

  1028. having selected

  1029. men to

  1030. fight,

  1031. the outcome

  1032. was not

  1033. determined by

  1034. the bravery

  1035. and fighting

  1036. skills of

  1037. these men

  1038. on the

  1039. battlefield,

  1040. but by

  1041. what happened

  1042. on the

  1043. hilltop.

  1044. It depended

  1045. on the

  1046. God he

  1047. was being

  1048. pled with

  1049. in prayer.

  1050. Whenever

  1051. Moses held

  1052. up his

  1053. hand,

  1054. Israel

  1055. prevailed.

  1056. Whenever he

  1057. lowered his

  1058. hand,

  1059. Amalek

  1060. prevailed.

  1061. Now remember,

  1062. God answers

  1063. prayer.

  1064. Oh,

  1065. how thankful

  1066. every believer

  1067. ought to be

  1068. that God

  1069. answers

  1070. prayer.

  1071. Moses saw

  1072. this

  1073. firsthand

  1074. as he

  1075. watched the

  1076. conflict

  1077. in the

  1078. valley.

  1079. The success

  1080. in battle

  1081. depended on

  1082. the God

  1083. who answers

  1084. prayer.

  1085. I'm sure

  1086. everyone has

  1087. heard the

  1088. phrase,

  1089. the pen,

  1090. is mightier

  1091. than the

  1092. sword.

  1093. But in

  1094. this example,

  1095. it was the

  1096. petition that

  1097. was mightier

  1098. than the

  1099. sword.

  1100. And prayer

  1101. is an

  1102. effective

  1103. weapon in

  1104. the hands

  1105. of the

  1106. believer.

  1107. In fact,

  1108. Paul counsels

  1109. the church.

  1110. I could put it

  1111. stronger.

  1112. He instructs the

  1113. church in the

  1114. letter to the

  1115. Ephesians,

  1116. pray at all

  1117. times in the

  1118. Spirit,

  1119. with all

  1120. prayer and

  1121. supplication.

  1122. prayer.

  1123. And when

  1124. he writes

  1125. that, it's

  1126. after putting

  1127. on the

  1128. whole armor

  1129. of God.

  1130. What does

  1131. that tell

  1132. us?

  1133. Does it

  1134. not tell

  1135. us this,

  1136. that we

  1137. may put

  1138. on the

  1139. whole

  1140. armor,

  1141. the belt

  1142. of truth,

  1143. the breastplate

  1144. of righteousness,

  1145. the shield

  1146. of faith,

  1147. the helmet

  1148. of salvation,

  1149. and the

  1150. sword of

  1151. the Spirit?

  1152. But if we

  1153. do not

  1154. entrust

  1155. ourselves to

  1156. God in

  1157. prayer,

  1158. then we

  1159. will not

  1160. stand.

  1161. We'll be

  1162. led away

  1163. into error.

  1164. we'll give

  1165. way to

  1166. temptation.

  1167. We'll be

  1168. dragged down

  1169. into doubt

  1170. and discouragement.

  1171. We could

  1172. fight valiantly

  1173. like Joshua,

  1174. but unless we

  1175. pray like

  1176. Moses,

  1177. we'll not

  1178. overcome in

  1179. the battle.

  1180. So how do

  1181. we fight

  1182. back against

  1183. the forces of

  1184. darkness?

  1185. Do we not

  1186. do what

  1187. Moses did?

  1188. He engaged

  1189. in prayer.

  1190. It is by

  1191. persevering and

  1192. prevailing in

  1193. prayer that we

  1194. become victorious

  1195. on the

  1196. battlefield of

  1197. sin and

  1198. temptation.

  1199. If you ask

  1200. me, why

  1201. is prayer

  1202. of such

  1203. huge importance?

  1204. Why is it

  1205. such an

  1206. effective

  1207. spiritual

  1208. weapon?

  1209. My answer

  1210. would be

  1211. this, that

  1212. God is the

  1213. difference

  1214. between victory

  1215. and defeat.

  1216. It is by

  1217. prayer that

  1218. we depend

  1219. on him

  1220. to win the

  1221. battle.

  1222. prayer.

  1223. Does that

  1224. mean that

  1225. it is the

  1226. power of

  1227. prayer that

  1228. is important?

  1229. Is it that

  1230. prayer itself

  1231. is the

  1232. important

  1233. factor?

  1234. If we pray

  1235. long enough,

  1236. if we pray

  1237. hard enough,

  1238. or often

  1239. enough,

  1240. then God

  1241. will do

  1242. what we

  1243. are asking

  1244. him to

  1245. do.

  1246. The power

  1247. of prayer

  1248. is not

  1249. the prayer

  1250. itself,

  1251. but the

  1252. power of

  1253. God.

  1254. In prayer,

  1255. we are

  1256. acknowledging

  1257. our absolute

  1258. dependence

  1259. on God.

  1260. Reminds me

  1261. of a

  1262. definition

  1263. of prayer

  1264. that I

  1265. read many

  1266. years ago

  1267. in a book

  1268. written by

  1269. a man

  1270. called

  1271. Octavius

  1272. Winslow,

  1273. and the

  1274. title of

  1275. the book

  1276. was The

  1277. Work of

  1278. the Holy

  1279. Spirit.

  1280. This is

  1281. what he

  1282. wrote on

  1283. prayer.

  1284. Prayer is

  1285. the expression

  1286. of want,

  1287. the desire

  1288. of need,

  1289. the acknowledgement

  1290. of poverty,

  1291. the language

  1292. of dependence,

  1293. the breathing

  1294. of a soul

  1295. that has

  1296. nothing in

  1297. itself but

  1298. hangs on

  1299. God for

  1300. all its

  1301. wants.

  1302. That

  1303. definition

  1304. of prayer

  1305. greatly

  1306. appealed to

  1307. me when

  1308. I first

  1309. read it,

  1310. and it

  1311. still does

  1312. years later.

  1313. Prayer is

  1314. also for

  1315. the glory

  1316. of God.

  1317. It glorifies

  1318. God by

  1319. showing that

  1320. the victory

  1321. belongs to

  1322. God alone.

  1323. Some have

  1324. suggested

  1325. that is why

  1326. Moses was

  1327. on the

  1328. hilltop,

  1329. because you

  1330. could say,

  1331. could he not

  1332. have prayed

  1333. in the

  1334. valley?

  1335. On the

  1336. hilltop,

  1337. he was

  1338. making sure

  1339. that Israel

  1340. learned the

  1341. power of

  1342. prayer.

  1343. Had he not

  1344. been visible

  1345. on the

  1346. hilltop,

  1347. Israel might

  1348. have concluded

  1349. that they

  1350. themselves were

  1351. responsible for

  1352. the victory.

  1353. They would be

  1354. celebrating their

  1355. own strength

  1356. and military

  1357. power.

  1358. We are so

  1359. prone to

  1360. this type

  1361. of failing,

  1362. of thinking

  1363. that we

  1364. ourselves

  1365. have done

  1366. it all.

  1367. When you

  1368. read this

  1369. book of

  1370. Exodus

  1371. carefully,

  1372. you cannot

  1373. but be

  1374. struck by

  1375. the frequency

  1376. of prayer

  1377. in the life

  1378. of Moses,

  1379. the servant

  1380. of God.

  1381. Again and

  1382. again you

  1383. find him

  1384. talking over

  1385. his problems

  1386. with the

  1387. Lord.

  1388. Here he

  1389. intercedes

  1390. on behalf

  1391. of Israel.

  1392. When he

  1393. lifted his

  1394. hand on

  1395. the hill,

  1396. top as I

  1397. believe in

  1398. prayer,

  1399. he was

  1400. elevating the

  1401. entire nation

  1402. before the

  1403. throne of

  1404. grace.

  1405. Given the

  1406. many wonderful

  1407. answers to

  1408. prayer that

  1409. he received,

  1410. many might

  1411. have thought

  1412. of him as

  1413. a prayer

  1414. warrior.

  1415. But what

  1416. I believe

  1417. this chapter

  1418. shows about

  1419. Moses'

  1420. prayer life

  1421. is not

  1422. its strength

  1423. but its

  1424. weakness.

  1425. As long

  1426. as he

  1427. interceded,

  1428. the Israelite

  1429. forces had

  1430. the upper

  1431. hand.

  1432. But there

  1433. came a

  1434. time when

  1435. Moses'

  1436. hands grew

  1437. weary.

  1438. Verse 12.

  1439. He was

  1440. unable to

  1441. persevere

  1442. in prayer.

  1443. And that

  1444. surely points

  1445. to the

  1446. need of

  1447. one greater

  1448. than Moses

  1449. who is a

  1450. better

  1451. mediator,

  1452. even the

  1453. Lord Jesus

  1454. Christ.

  1455. The writer

  1456. to the

  1457. Hebrews

  1458. reminds us

  1459. that he

  1460. always lives

  1461. to make

  1462. intercession

  1463. for his

  1464. people.

  1465. He requires

  1466. no one

  1467. to hold

  1468. up his

  1469. hands.

  1470. There

  1471. came a

  1472. time for

  1473. Moses

  1474. when

  1475. sheer

  1476. exhaustion

  1477. set in,

  1478. unable to

  1479. keep going.

  1480. And I

  1481. am sure

  1482. that every

  1483. person

  1484. who engages

  1485. in prayer

  1486. will agree

  1487. that

  1488. persistent,

  1489. continuous

  1490. prayer

  1491. can be

  1492. wearisome,

  1493. can be

  1494. exhausting.

  1495. it is

  1496. difficult

  1497. to remember

  1498. what is

  1499. recorded

  1500. of the

  1501. disciples

  1502. who were

  1503. with Jesus

  1504. in

  1505. Gethsemane.

  1506. Remember,

  1507. Jesus had

  1508. gone a

  1509. stone's

  1510. throw from

  1511. them.

  1512. He had

  1513. taken

  1514. three with

  1515. them.

  1516. And we

  1517. are told

  1518. he came

  1519. to the

  1520. disciples

  1521. and found

  1522. them

  1523. sleeping.

  1524. And he

  1525. spoke

  1526. particularly

  1527. to Peter.

  1528. So could

  1529. you not

  1530. watch with

  1531. me one

  1532. hour?

  1533. And then

  1534. he goes

  1535. on to

  1536. say,

  1537. The spirit

  1538. indeed is

  1539. willing,

  1540. but the

  1541. flesh is

  1542. weak.

  1543. The flesh

  1544. is always

  1545. weak.

  1546. But the

  1547. weakness

  1548. of Moses

  1549. only served

  1550. to highlight

  1551. and magnify

  1552. the glory

  1553. of God.

  1554. It showed

  1555. that Israel

  1556. was victorious

  1557. not because

  1558. Joshua was

  1559. a good

  1560. military

  1561. leader or

  1562. because Moses

  1563. was a man

  1564. of prayer,

  1565. but because

  1566. God was

  1567. their captain

  1568. in the

  1569. battle.

  1570. We read

  1571. Moses'

  1572. hands grew

  1573. weary,

  1574. so they

  1575. took a

  1576. stone and

  1577. put it

  1578. under him,

  1579. sat on

  1580. it while

  1581. Aaron and

  1582. her held

  1583. up his

  1584. hands,

  1585. and so

  1586. on.

  1587. And what

  1588. this picture

  1589. sets before

  1590. us and

  1591. suggests,

  1592. is that

  1593. Moses was

  1594. given

  1595. support in

  1596. persevering in

  1597. prayer by

  1598. these two

  1599. individuals,

  1600. Aaron and

  1601. her.

  1602. With their

  1603. help,

  1604. his hands

  1605. remain steady.

  1606. Even prayer

  1607. warriors

  1608. require

  1609. assistance.

  1610. prayer.

  1611. And I

  1612. think it

  1613. demonstrates

  1614. to us

  1615. the need

  1616. of corporate

  1617. prayer.

  1618. Yes,

  1619. individual

  1620. prayer

  1621. ought to

  1622. be a

  1623. constant

  1624. feature and

  1625. mark of

  1626. the believer

  1627. in life,

  1628. but there is

  1629. a need for

  1630. corporate

  1631. prayer.

  1632. That's a

  1633. feature of

  1634. the New

  1635. Testament

  1636. church from

  1637. the very

  1638. outset in

  1639. the book

  1640. of the

  1641. Acts of

  1642. the

  1643. Apostles.

  1644. You find

  1645. the early

  1646. Christians

  1647. engaged in

  1648. prayer and

  1649. groups.

  1650. At

  1651. Pentecost,

  1652. for example,

  1653. they were

  1654. all together

  1655. in one

  1656. place.

  1657. Can you

  1658. find this?

  1659. They devoted

  1660. themselves to

  1661. the apostle

  1662. teaching and

  1663. the fellowship,

  1664. to the

  1665. breaking of

  1666. bread and

  1667. the prayers.

  1668. When choosing

  1669. men to

  1670. the diaconate,

  1671. you remember

  1672. the disciples

  1673. said,

  1674. we will

  1675. devote

  1676. ourselves

  1677. to

  1678. prayer and

  1679. to the

  1680. ministry of

  1681. the word.

  1682. And again

  1683. remember when

  1684. Peter was

  1685. imprisoned by

  1686. Herod,

  1687. earnest

  1688. prayer for

  1689. him was

  1690. made to

  1691. God by

  1692. the church.

  1693. When he

  1694. was miraculously

  1695. released from

  1696. imprisonment,

  1697. he went to

  1698. look for his

  1699. friends, and

  1700. you remember

  1701. what was

  1702. true.

  1703. when he

  1704. came to

  1705. the house

  1706. of John

  1707. Mark,

  1708. they were

  1709. engaged in

  1710. all-night

  1711. prayer.

  1712. Many were

  1713. gathered

  1714. together and

  1715. were praying.

  1716. The strange

  1717. thing is,

  1718. in that

  1719. example,

  1720. they didn't

  1721. even believe

  1722. that the

  1723. Lord had

  1724. done what

  1725. they were

  1726. praying for.

  1727. And sometimes

  1728. we're like

  1729. that too.

  1730. we ask

  1731. for something,

  1732. and when it

  1733. happens, we

  1734. can hardly

  1735. believe that

  1736. does happen.

  1737. There was

  1738. Peter knocking

  1739. frantically at

  1740. the door.

  1741. And you

  1742. remember

  1743. how

  1744. Rhoda came

  1745. to the

  1746. door.

  1747. She ran

  1748. back in,

  1749. such was her

  1750. excitement.

  1751. And they

  1752. weren't

  1753. believing it.

  1754. that required

  1755. some convincing.

  1756. Well,

  1757. prayer is the

  1758. spiritual weapon

  1759. of the

  1760. church.

  1761. Cannot be

  1762. emphasized

  1763. enough how

  1764. we need

  1765. to meet

  1766. in prayer.

  1767. Remember,

  1768. the promise

  1769. of Jesus

  1770. to the

  1771. church,

  1772. where two

  1773. or three

  1774. are gathered

  1775. in my

  1776. name.

  1777. There am

  1778. I among

  1779. them.

  1780. there is

  1781. need,

  1782. as I

  1783. said,

  1784. for

  1785. private

  1786. intercession.

  1787. But there

  1788. is a

  1789. great need

  1790. for

  1791. corporate

  1792. prayer,

  1793. where we

  1794. pray for

  1795. and pray

  1796. with

  1797. other

  1798. Christians.

  1799. And you

  1800. know,

  1801. that can

  1802. be very

  1803. encouraging

  1804. to people

  1805. when they're

  1806. praying for

  1807. and with

  1808. one another.

  1809. Countering

  1810. hostility,

  1811. the importance

  1812. of prayer,

  1813. conflict,

  1814. and

  1815. referendum,

  1816. a hostile

  1817. finally celebration

  1818. of victory.

  1819. The narrative

  1820. tells us

  1821. Joshua

  1822. overwhelmed

  1823. Amalek and

  1824. his people

  1825. with a

  1826. sword.

  1827. Does the

  1828. writer tell

  1829. us

  1830. how they

  1831. celebrated

  1832. the victory?

  1833. A huge

  1834. victory

  1835. party was

  1836. held.

  1837. That's not

  1838. what we

  1839. read.

  1840. But what

  1841. we read

  1842. is this,

  1843. or what

  1844. is implied

  1845. by what

  1846. we read.

  1847. They

  1848. offered

  1849. thanksgiving

  1850. to God.

  1851. They

  1852. worshipped.

  1853. How

  1854. appropriate.

  1855. Moses is

  1856. instructed to

  1857. write

  1858. what took

  1859. place,

  1860. and

  1861. significantly

  1862. instructed

  1863. to bring

  1864. this to

  1865. the attention

  1866. of Joshua

  1867. as the

  1868. future leader

  1869. of the

  1870. nation.

  1871. Not so

  1872. much that

  1873. he might

  1874. read the

  1875. report,

  1876. but to

  1877. have it

  1878. read out

  1879. to him.

  1880. Write this

  1881. as a

  1882. memorial in

  1883. a book,

  1884. and recite

  1885. it in the

  1886. years of

  1887. Joshua.

  1888. You know,

  1889. write it as a

  1890. memorial and

  1891. let him read

  1892. it.

  1893. That's not what's

  1894. said in the

  1895. context here,

  1896. but recite it

  1897. in the

  1898. years of

  1899. Joshua.

  1900. And then

  1901. there is

  1902. this message,

  1903. a very

  1904. solemn message

  1905. that I will

  1906. utterly blot

  1907. out the

  1908. memory of

  1909. Amalek from

  1910. under heaven.

  1911. The report

  1912. was to

  1913. act as a

  1914. reminder to

  1915. the future

  1916. leader and

  1917. to the

  1918. nation what

  1919. God had

  1920. done, what

  1921. he still

  1922. intended to

  1923. do regarding

  1924. the Amalekites.

  1925. Israel would

  1926. face these

  1927. peoples again.

  1928. God wanted

  1929. Israel to

  1930. remember what

  1931. he had done

  1932. for them in

  1933. the past, so

  1934. when they

  1935. came under

  1936. attack again,

  1937. they would

  1938. look to the

  1939. Lord for

  1940. deliverance.

  1941. And not only

  1942. that, but

  1943. that these

  1944. people were

  1945. to be

  1946. destroyed.

  1947. And yet

  1948. so often,

  1949. we tend to

  1950. disregard or

  1951. forget the

  1952. lessons of

  1953. the past.

  1954. Is that not

  1955. true?

  1956. And we

  1957. repeat the

  1958. same mistakes

  1959. again.

  1960. Israel sadly

  1961. did just

  1962. that.

  1963. They

  1964. encountered

  1965. the Amalekites

  1966. again when

  1967. they reached

  1968. the borders of

  1969. the promised

  1970. land.

  1971. Instead of

  1972. looking to

  1973. the Lord in

  1974. prayer, they

  1975. were afraid.

  1976. As a result,

  1977. they spent the

  1978. next 38

  1979. years wandering

  1980. in the wilderness.

  1981. However, to

  1982. come back to

  1983. my third

  1984. heading, the

  1985. celebration of

  1986. victory, they

  1987. built an

  1988. altar.

  1989. Moses built an

  1990. altar.

  1991. That was a

  1992. common practice

  1993. amongst those

  1994. who would

  1995. probably be

  1996. regarded as the

  1997. patriarchs.

  1998. For example,

  1999. Noah, when he

  2000. came out of the

  2001. ark, he built

  2002. an altar.

  2003. Abram built an

  2004. altar at

  2005. Shechem when

  2006. the Lord

  2007. appeared to

  2008. him.

  2009. Now, you

  2010. will probably

  2011. tell me there

  2012. is no

  2013. mention of

  2014. an offering

  2015. made in this

  2016. context.

  2017. There is not.

  2018. but there is

  2019. no mention

  2020. of an

  2021. offering not

  2022. being made.

  2023. The very

  2024. word altar

  2025. is derived

  2026. from the

  2027. idea of

  2028. sacrificial

  2029. slaughter.

  2030. It's on the

  2031. basis of

  2032. sacrifice that

  2033. fellowship with

  2034. God was

  2035. maintained.

  2036. and this

  2037. altar, I

  2038. would suggest,

  2039. was erected

  2040. in order to

  2041. thank God.

  2042. But it also

  2043. serves as a

  2044. memorial to

  2045. the assistance

  2046. given by the

  2047. Lord in

  2048. enabling the

  2049. Israelite forces

  2050. to overcome

  2051. the Amalekites.

  2052. The name

  2053. which Moses

  2054. gives to the

  2055. altar is most

  2056. interesting.

  2057. The Lord

  2058. is my

  2059. banner.

  2060. Yahweh

  2061. Nisi.

  2062. There is

  2063. acknowledgement

  2064. that God

  2065. is banner

  2066. and strength

  2067. of his

  2068. people.

  2069. A banner

  2070. in the

  2071. conventional

  2072. military sense

  2073. is usually

  2074. military standard

  2075. with a piece

  2076. of cloth

  2077. or a flag

  2078. bearing the

  2079. regimental

  2080. insignia

  2081. and raised

  2082. on a pole

  2083. that usually

  2084. becomes a

  2085. rallying point

  2086. in battle

  2087. reminding soldiers

  2088. of their

  2089. identity

  2090. but also

  2091. giving them

  2092. encouragement

  2093. at hope

  2094. as long as

  2095. the banner

  2096. is displayed

  2097. they know

  2098. the battle

  2099. is not

  2100. lost.

  2101. And Moses

  2102. by this

  2103. name

  2104. is saying

  2105. to the

  2106. nation

  2107. the staff

  2108. for my

  2109. upraised

  2110. hand

  2111. is not

  2112. your source

  2113. of encouragement

  2114. but God

  2115. himself.

  2116. This was

  2117. to be the

  2118. rallying cry

  2119. of the people

  2120. of Israel.

  2121. It's the

  2122. rallying cry

  2123. for the

  2124. church to

  2125. the present

  2126. hour.

  2127. There's a

  2128. need for

  2129. vigilance

  2130. in our

  2131. daily life

  2132. as we

  2133. encounter

  2134. the world

  2135. the flesh

  2136. and the

  2137. devil.

  2138. That may

  2139. be an

  2140. old truth

  2141. but all

  2142. truths

  2143. require

  2144. constant

  2145. emphasis.

  2146. Can we

  2147. say this

  2148. evening

  2149. that Jesus

  2150. is our

  2151. banner

  2152. and that

  2153. we

  2154. are

  2155. walking

  2156. under

  2157. him

  2158. as our

  2159. banner.

  2160. Conflict

  2161. at

  2162. Rephidim

  2163. a hostile

  2164. encounter

  2165. countering

  2166. hostility

  2167. the importance

  2168. of prayer

  2169. celebration

  2170. of victory

  2171. they give

  2172. thanks

  2173. and declared

  2174. that the

  2175. Lord was

  2176. their

  2177. banner.

  2178. Let us

  2179. pray.

  2180. Almighty

  2181. God

  2182. we

  2183. thank

  2184. thee

  2185. that

  2186. thou

  2187. art the

  2188. hearer

  2189. and the

  2190. answerer

  2191. of prayer

  2192. that thou

  2193. art even

  2194. the

  2195. instigator

  2196. of prayer

  2197. in the

  2198. lives of

  2199. those

  2200. who have

  2201. been imbued

  2202. with new

  2203. spiritual

  2204. life

  2205. and we

  2206. bless thy

  2207. name

  2208. that however

  2209. feeble

  2210. they might

  2211. feel

  2212. that they

  2213. come to

  2214. a strong

  2215. and a

  2216. powerful

  2217. God

  2218. even to

  2219. one who

  2220. is omnipotent

  2221. who is able

  2222. to turn

  2223. matters

  2224. around

  2225. even

  2226. when

  2227. these

  2228. situations

  2229. may seem

  2230. so bleak

  2231. so hopeless

  2232. and so

  2233. lost

  2234. that thou

  2235. art able

  2236. to turn

  2237. them around

  2238. help us

  2239. to look

  2240. increasingly

  2241. more to

  2242. thee

  2243. to trust

  2244. in thy
