  1. Well, we begin our worship this morning by singing to God's praise in Psalm 96 in the Scottish Psalter.

  2. Psalm 96, we're going to sing from verse 4 to verse 9, the tune of St. Magnus.

  3. For great's the Lord, and greatly he is to be magnified,

  4. yea, worthy to be feared is he above all gods beside.

  5. We'll sing from verse 4 to 9 to God's praise.

  6. For great's the Lord, and greatly he is to be magnified,

  7. yea, worthy to be feared is he above all gods beside.

  8. For all the gods are idols come, which blinded nations fear.

  9. But our God is the Lord by whom the heavens created were.

  10. Good honor is before this face, and majesty divine.

  11. Strength is within this holy place, and there does beauty shine.

  12. Glory to you, O Lord, and mighty power has died.

  13. And we'll give thee the glory to the Lord, that to this name is true.

  14. And we'll give thee to this Lord, standing, and offering with you.

  15. In beauty of his holiness, O do the Lord adore.

  16. Like wise that all the earth through our tremble as days before.

  17. Let's come to God in prayer.

  18. Let us pray.

  19. Our Father in heaven, as we come before you to this day,

  20. we thank you that there is a beauty that shines from you,

  21. and that we are to come and adore you as our Lord and as our God,

  22. and that your beauty may shine upon us,

  23. that we might see your beauty through the person of Jesus Christ,

  24. that we would might know more of your beauty through your word to us.

  25. May it speak to all our hearts today.

  26. May it help us to see and to know how great a God you are.

  27. You are the Lord, and greatly to be magnified, the psalmist says.

  28. And we do pray that as we come to worship you this day,

  29. that that will be our longing and our desire,

  30. that we would see you as so great and ourselves as so small.

  31. But yet remember how you have remembered us,

  32. and how you have given us all that we need,

  33. how you have given us a way to salvation through your own Son, Jesus Christ,

  34. how you have done all things that we could not.

  35. And we thank you for the commands of your word.

  36. We thank you for every instruction they give to us.

  37. And we pray that we would not see them as just something that is a burden to us,

  38. or something that is there to spoil our fun or to hinder us in any way,

  39. but that we would see all your laws and your commands as there for our good and for your glory.

  40. We thank you that the young ones just now are learning through your word about the Ten Commandments.

  41. And may we all come to remember them and to see them as so wonderful for us as a people and as a world.

  42. As we learn all about your truth, Lord, may they instruct us and guide us in our way.

  43. But may we see that it's more than just trying to keep your commands.

  44. But the greatest command of all that we are to keep is to love the Lord with all our heart,

  45. and to love our neighbor as ourself.

  46. And we thank you that that is what these commands guide us to.

  47. So we pray, Lord, your blessing on your word to us, young and old today,

  48. that we would hear your commands, that we would be obedient to them,

  49. and that you would bless us through them.

  50. Remember us in our homes and in our families and all our different needs.

  51. We thank you that you are a God who loves us and cares for us.

  52. And we pray that every burden that we have, every care and concern that we carry,

  53. that we will be able to bring them to you in prayer,

  54. knowing that you are able to help us in all our different needs.

  55. So hear our prayers even at this time.

  56. And continue with us through this day.

  57. May you guide us and bless us as we ask all things for the forgiveness of our sins.

  58. We ask it for your glory and for your sake.

  59. Amen.

  60. It's good to see you all again.

  61. It's good to have the children here today as well,

  62. and especially I'm sure you're all delighted to be back in school this last week.

  63. All delighted to see your teachers again,

  64. to hear your parents shouting at you in the morning,

  65. to hurry up and get ready to get to school.

  66. But do you like being told what to do?

  67. Do you like it when people say to you,

  68. do this and do that?

  69. Or do you find it sort of just spoils your fun a little bit?

  70. Maybe it depends who's saying it to you, does it?

  71. Maybe it depends if it's a brother or a sister telling you

  72. to go and get my shoes or go and get my jacket.

  73. You're saying to yourself, go and do it yourself.

  74. I'm not your slave.

  75. I'm not here just to do what you tell me to do.

  76. But then maybe if it's your mum or dad who are telling you to go and do these things,

  77. do you say the same to them?

  78. I hope not.

  79. I hope you don't even say it to your little brothers or sisters either.

  80. It's not the way we're to speak to people at all.

  81. How about when you go to school or Sunday school

  82. and your teachers are telling you what to do?

  83. Do you listen to them?

  84. Do you do as you're told with them?

  85. Do you always, if they say, do your homework,

  86. do you always do it, hand it in on time?

  87. Maybe we don't always,

  88. but we should seek to try and do what they're telling us.

  89. But who's the most important person that we're to listen to?

  90. Who do you think is the most important person that you're to listen to

  91. who's telling you what to do?

  92. Do you think it's your mum?

  93. Do you think it's your dad?

  94. Grandparents?

  95. Brothers or sisters?

  96. Friends?

  97. Do you think that's the most important people to listen to?

  98. No, the most important person we're to listen to is God.

  99. Because God tells us what we're to do.

  100. Again and again through his word,

  101. he reminds us what we are to do.

  102. And like I was praying there,

  103. you're learning about the Ten Commandments in Sunday school.

  104. You're learning about the things that we're to do

  105. and the things that we're not to do.

  106. And it's important to listen to that

  107. because God is telling you,

  108. this is how we're to live our lives.

  109. That goes for everybody here, myself included.

  110. God tells us what we are to do.

  111. Imagine if there was no laws and no rules.

  112. What would the world be like?

  113. Everybody would think,

  114. oh, it'd be so good if there was no rules.

  115. Just do as we want.

  116. Imagine if there was no rules for driving on the road.

  117. Imagine some people,

  118. how fast they would drive.

  119. I mean, there's speed limits in place today,

  120. but yet people don't always listen to them.

  121. They go faster than the speed limit says.

  122. But imagine if there was no rules,

  123. how crazy people would be on the roads.

  124. What about in school if there was no rules?

  125. You have rules in place,

  126. like times you have to start,

  127. times you finish.

  128. What do you just decide for yourself?

  129. I'll go into school at two in the afternoon

  130. for half an hour and that's it.

  131. Would you learn?

  132. No.

  133. You'd be missing out on so much.

  134. So there's all kinds of rules in place for us

  135. because they're good for us.

  136. But the greatest rules of all

  137. are how we are to live and to love God.

  138. And that's really what's at the heart

  139. of the Ten Commandments.

  140. God giving us great instructions,

  141. how we are to live for Him

  142. and love Him with all our hearts

  143. and serve Him,

  144. but also how we are to love others around us

  145. and to be obedient to all the rules

  146. that He has given to us.

  147. Today in the service in 1 Peter,

  148. we're looking at a command,

  149. an instruction that God gives to His people.

  150. He says,

  151. Be holy.

  152. And what does it mean to be holy?

  153. Sometimes we think of being holy as being good,

  154. but it's more than being good.

  155. It's about loving God with all our heart

  156. and doing everything that He instructs us

  157. and commands us

  158. because that's for our good

  159. and for His glory.

  160. So when you're told to do things,

  161. don't see it always as just burdensome

  162. or there to spoil your fun,

  163. but see it as for your good

  164. and especially the instructions

  165. that God gives to us through His Word.

  166. See that as for your good,

  167. for all our good together,

  168. that we would live for Him

  169. and love Him with all our hearts.

  170. So let's come to God in prayer just now

  171. and share the Lord's Prayer together.

  172. Let's say the Lord's Prayer.

  173. Our Father which art in heaven,

  174. hallowed be Thy name.

  175. Thy kingdom come.

  176. Thy will be done on earth

  177. as it is in heaven.

  178. Give us this day our daily bread

  179. and forgive us our debts

  180. as we forgive our debtors.

  181. And lead us not into temptation,

  182. but deliver us from evil.

  183. For Thine is the kingdom,

  184. the power and the glory forever.

  185. Amen.

  186. We again sing to God's praise

  187. just now in Psalm 103.

  188. Again, this is in the Scottish Psalter version,

  189. Psalm 103.

  190. We're singing verse 1 to verse 5.

  191. And the tune is Martyrdom.

  192. O thou my soul,

  193. bless God the Lord,

  194. and all that in me is,

  195. bested up His holy name

  196. to magnify and bless.

  197. We'll sing from verse 1 to 5

  198. to God's praise.

  199. O thou my soul,

  200. O thou my soul,

  201. best of the Lord,

  202. and all that in me is,

  203. He's stead of His holy name,

  204. to magnify and bless.

  205. O thou my soul,

  206. O thou my soul,

  207. the Lord my God,

  208. I'll not forget to be,

  209. of all His gracious benefits,

  210. He hath be stoned on me.

  211. O night and air,

  212. when Jesus to the most gracious

  213. be for Him,

  214. will do kidding on me.

  215. If you will see more than us,

  216. I will have indeed to amp 장 please.

  217. O thou thy soul,

  218. O Lord,

  219. who's t colleague and Mark,

  220. O wondering the best

  221. of all things.

  222. Who do-do ...

  223. redeem

  224. my life

  225. not down

  226. to death

  227. may

  228. not go down

  229. who

  230. be with

  231. all

  232. in

  233. kindness

  234. God

  235. and

  236. tender

  237. as

  238. He Wisconsin

  239. the

  240. øve

  241. with

  242. the

  243. bond

  244. and

  245. song

  246. good

  247. does

  248. satisfy

  249. thy

  250. part

  251. so

  252. that

  253. Out in our devil's head, renew it is I am.

  254. Well, can we turn to reading God's word as we come back to our study in 1 Peter?

  255. We'll read in 1 Peter the first chapter, the whole chapter, just to remind ourselves where we are with it.

  256. 1 Peter chapter 1, we read the whole of the chapter together.

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  257. Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who are elect exiles of the dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,

  258. according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit,

  259. for obedience to Jesus Christ, and for the sprinkling with his blood.

  260. May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

  261. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  262. According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope,

  263. through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

  264. to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading,

  265. kept in heaven for you,

  266. who by God's power are being guarded through faith,

  267. for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

  268. In this you rejoice, though now, for a little while,

  269. if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials,

  270. so the tested genuineness of your faith,

  271. more precious than gold that perishes,

  272. though it is tested by fire,

  273. may be found to result in praise and glory and honour

  274. at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

  275. Though you have not seen him, you love him.

  276. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him,

  277. and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory,

  278. obtaining the outcome of your faith,

  279. the salvation of your souls.

  280. Concerning this salvation,

  281. the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours

  282. searched and inquired carefully,

  283. inquiring what person or time

  284. the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating.

  285. when he predicted the sufferings of Christ

  286. and the subsequent glories,

  287. it was revealed to them

  288. that they were serving not themselves,

  289. but you,

  290. in the things that have now been announced to you

  291. through those who preached the good news to you

  292. by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven,

  293. things into which angels longed to look.

  294. Therefore,

  295. preparing your minds for action

  296. and being sober-minded,

  297. set your hope fully on the grace

  298. that will be brought to you

  299. at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

  300. As obedient children,

  301. do not be conformed to the passions

  302. of your former ignorance,

  303. but as he who called you is holy,

  304. you also be holy in all your conduct.

  305. Since it is written,

  306. you shall be holy,

  307. for I am holy.

  308. And if you call on him as Father

  309. who judges impartially according to each one's deeds,

  310. conduct yourselves with fear

  311. throughout the time of your exile,

  312. knowing that you were ransomed

  313. from the futile ways

  314. inherited from your forefathers,

  315. not with perishable things

  316. such as silver or gold,

  317. but with the precious blood of Christ,

  318. like that of a lamb

  319. without blemish or spot.

  320. He was foreknown

  321. before the foundation of the world,

  322. but was made manifest

  323. in the last times for your sake,

  324. who through him

  325. are believers in God,

  326. who raised him from the dead

  327. and gave him glory

  328. so that your faith and hope

  329. are in God.

  330. Having purified your souls

  331. by your obedience to the truth

  332. for a sincere brotherly love,

  333. love one another earnestly

  334. from a pure heart,

  335. since you have been born again

  336. not of perishable seed,

  337. but of imperishable

  338. through the living and abiding word of God.

  339. For all flesh is like grass

  340. and its glory like the flower of grass.

  341. The grass withers

  342. and the flower falls,

  343. but the word of the Lord

  344. remains forever.

  345. And this word

  346. is the good news

  347. that was preached to you.

  348. And so on,

  349. and may God bless that reading

  350. from his word.

  351. We'll again come to God

  352. in prayer.

  353. Let us pray.

  354. Lord God,

  355. as we continue in worship,

  356. we continue in our dependence upon you

  357. for all things.

  358. For you know our weaknesses,

  359. you know how easily we are distracted,

  360. you know how easily

  361. we can be led astray.

  362. And as we think of these words

  363. in Peter,

  364. and as we come to study them today,

  365. we are reminded of the great challenge

  366. that is put before us

  367. to be a holy people,

  368. a people who are set apart for you,

  369. a people who live for you

  370. in the way that we love you

  371. with all our heart,

  372. but also as we read,

  373. in the way we conduct ourselves,

  374. conduct ourselves among one another here,

  375. but also in our conduct in the world

  376. on a day-to-day basis.

  377. For our worship and our praise of you

  378. is not just for a short time

  379. on this day.

  380. It's not just for the hour

  381. that we are together in worship,

  382. but our worship,

  383. our praise of you

  384. is something that we are to be

  385. a people involved in 24-7.

  386. So whatever we are doing,

  387. we do it for your glory.

  388. And we recognize, Lord,

  389. our failings in that.

  390. We recognize so often

  391. in our attempt at holiness

  392. and our seeking after holiness

  393. how far short we fall.

  394. So often maybe we don't even consider

  395. ourselves holy at all,

  396. but as your word reminds us,

  397. you have chosen a people for yourself.

  398. You are calling a people to yourself today,

  399. and that means a people

  400. who will be set apart,

  401. a people who will be different.

  402. And so we pray that you will help us, Lord,

  403. to live as those people,

  404. and to seek to be those people for you,

  405. to seek to conduct ourselves

  406. in a manner worthy of the gospel

  407. that we hear,

  408. the good news that is preached to us.

  409. And so help us, Lord,

  410. to confess our sins before you.

  411. Help us to acknowledge them

  412. and to know that with you

  413. there is forgiveness.

  414. And we pray, Lord,

  415. that you will help us

  416. to bow the knee before you,

  417. to confess from our hearts

  418. that we have sinned against you

  419. and against you only

  420. in thoughts, word, and deed.

  421. We are guilty to all ends.

  422. But, Lord, help us

  423. that you may lift us up too,

  424. that you will place our feet

  425. on the rock that is Jesus Christ,

  426. and that through him

  427. we will be able to live

  428. as those who are your redeemed people

  429. and are called people.

  430. Help us to go into the world,

  431. to go into the week ahead of us, Lord,

  432. to be a people

  433. who will conduct ourselves

  434. in the right manner of your calling.

  435. Help us to love our neighbor.

  436. Help us to live for those around us.

  437. Help us to share

  438. the good news of the gospel with others.

  439. Help us that in all that we would do,

  440. we would seek not our own building up,

  441. but that your name would be praise.

  442. So, Lord, humble us in your presence

  443. and under your holy arm today.

  444. Humble us under your word

  445. and your truth,

  446. that they may build us up.

  447. We thank you too, Lord,

  448. that as we come,

  449. we come as those

  450. who are fully dependent upon you

  451. in all things,

  452. but thankful too

  453. that you hear our prayers,

  454. that you know

  455. every thought of our heart,

  456. you know every burden

  457. that we carry,

  458. be it for ourselves,

  459. be it for our families,

  460. be it for those around us

  461. in our communities,

  462. in our homes,

  463. in our own families,

  464. be it for our nation

  465. or the nations of the world.

  466. Lord, we thank you

  467. that we do not carry everything alone

  468. for it is impossible for us,

  469. but we come to bring our burdens to you.

  470. And so we ask, Lord,

  471. that you will deal graciously with us

  472. and those we love and care for,

  473. be gracious towards those

  474. who struggle in different ways

  475. at this time,

  476. those who are weighed down

  477. with sorrow and sadness

  478. in their hearts,

  479. those who mourn

  480. the passing of loved ones

  481. even in this week

  482. and the last few weeks,

  483. Lord,

  484. as there has been grief and loss

  485. in the midst of our people here.

  486. We thank you, Lord,

  487. that you are a God of comfort.

  488. And when things come upon us,

  489. when our lives are changed so quickly

  490. in the midst of these things,

  491. we thank you that we are known to you,

  492. that you are a good shepherd

  493. who cares for his sheep.

  494. You are the one

  495. who so often will come

  496. and carry us and uphold us

  497. in our times of great need.

  498. And so we pray, Lord,

  499. for your comfort and your blessing

  500. to those who are heavy in heart today,

  501. for those who mourn and grieve,

  502. for those who are anxious

  503. over loved ones,

  504. for those who are anxious

  505. of themselves.

  506. Lord, we pray that you will

  507. draw near to them.

  508. We give you thanks too, Lord,

  509. that you are a God

  510. of great blessings as well,

  511. that you are the giver of life.

  512. We thank you for a new life

  513. in our midst as a people as well.

  514. And we pray and thank you, Lord,

  515. for the good news

  516. of a new birth in our midst.

  517. We pray your blessing

  518. over families,

  519. upon children born into this world

  520. and born to families

  521. who will love them

  522. and care for them.

  523. Lord, we pray

  524. for all our young ones,

  525. that you will look after them,

  526. that you will bless them,

  527. that you will keep them.

  528. We see the great challenges

  529. around them in these days.

  530. And we thank you, Lord,

  531. for your word

  532. and how it instructs a people

  533. from a very young age

  534. into old age.

  535. We hear your word

  536. and your truth speaking to us.

  537. And so we pray, Lord,

  538. for our children,

  539. that they will grow up

  540. in this world,

  541. knowing your great love

  542. and compassion,

  543. knowing your great concern

  544. for them.

  545. And we pray for those

  546. who seek to instruct them

  547. and guide them in day school

  548. and also in Sunday school

  549. and also the clubs

  550. and events that go on

  551. through the week as well.

  552. We thank you for the resumption

  553. of the Explorers group

  554. in this past week.

  555. Thank you for all

  556. who came to that

  557. and pray you continue

  558. to bless and to watch

  559. over them there.

  560. We thank you for the toddler group

  561. that meets on a Monday

  562. and for all parents

  563. and children who attend there.

  564. We pray your blessing

  565. over them as well.

  566. So we thank you

  567. for the conference

  568. over this weekend,

  569. for young people

  570. and for the big YF

  571. this evening.

  572. We pray that it will be

  573. a blessed time

  574. of guidance and instruction

  575. for young but also old alike.

  576. That we would learn

  577. from the challenges

  578. that we face in these days.

  579. Learn how to approach them

  580. in a godly manner

  581. and seeking your wisdom

  582. and your guidance in them.

  583. Remember our land as well, Lord,

  584. and the nation of the world

  585. as we hear of the tragedy

  586. in South Korea yesterday, Lord.

  587. So many lives lost,

  588. so many young lives lost there.

  589. We do pray for comfort,

  590. for mercy upon all

  591. who need you at this time there.

  592. You know, too,

  593. the many difficulties

  594. throughout our world.

  595. Wars and conflicts going on,

  596. famine and natural disasters

  597. all around us.

  598. We see it so often.

  599. We hear it in the Philippines.

  600. We've seen it in America.

  601. We see it on every continent, Lord,

  602. how there is disaster

  603. after disaster.

  604. And we just pray, Lord,

  605. have mercy upon us.

  606. Come with your healing power.

  607. Come with the power

  608. of your Holy Spirit.

  609. Come and draw near to us

  610. as a people

  611. and help us in all things.

  612. We ask your blessing on us now

  613. as we continue in our worship,

  614. as we turn to your word

  615. and we continue to sing your praise.

  616. May we sing from our hearts,

  617. rejoicing in the hope of the gospel,

  618. thankful for the redemption

  619. that is ours through Jesus Christ,

  620. the one who has paid

  621. the ultimate price.

  622. We thank you that in all things

  623. we can look to him,

  624. that we can trust him

  625. and that we have hope in him

  626. through faith.

  627. And so we pray, Lord,

  628. that you will give us that faith

  629. and dependence upon him.

  630. So hear our prayers

  631. and go before us.

  632. We ask all things

  633. for the forgiveness of our sins

  634. and for your glory alone.

  635. We ask in Jesus' name.

  636. Amen.

  637. We're going to sing

  638. to God's praise

  639. before we turn back

  640. to that first letter of Peter,

  641. singing in Psalm 49,

  642. page 64 of the psalm books.

  643. Psalm 49,

  644. singing from verse 1 to verse 10.

  645. Listen to me,

  646. all you peoples,

  647. all who in the whole world dwell,

  648. low and high,

  649. both rich and needy,

  650. hear the message

  651. I will tell.

  652. Then at verse 8,

  653. it says,

  654. to redeem,

  655. a life is costly,

  656. none sufficient,

  657. price can pay,

  658. so that one should live

  659. immortal,

  660. free forever

  661. from decay.

  662. But it's a reminder to us

  663. that there is forgiveness

  664. and redemption

  665. in Jesus Christ.

  666. Let's sing from Psalm 49,

    Psalms 49:1–10

  667. verse 1 to 10

  668. to God's praise.

  669. Psalm 49,

    Psalms 49:1–10

  670. verses 1 to 10

  671. And this is part of it

  672. to Jesus Christ.

  673. And this is part of it

  674. of the psalm commemorative

  675. and Michael's chosen

  676. against Jesus.

  677. This is part of it

  678. and this is part of it

  679. avoir ads klass cheyed

  680. I will speak with understanding, wisdom from the heart I'll preach.

  681. I will listen to a proverb, speak as with the harp I'll teach.

  682. What should I fear, days of evil, when the wicked end be in?

  683. Those who boast of their possessions, by their trust and wealth they save.

  684. There is no one who is able to redeem a soul from death.

  685. Man can pay to God their ransom to prolong another's bread.

  686. To redeem a life this costly, none sufficient price can pay.

  687. So that one should live the mortal free forever from decay.

  688. For we all can see life ending, wise and foolish all will die.

  689. They must leave their wealth to others.

  690. God, God is demand defied.

  691. Can we turn back to 1 Peter chapter 1?

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  692. We can read again at verse 14.

  693. Let's continue our study in this letter.

  694. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance.

  695. But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct.

  696. Since it is written, you shall be holy, for I am holy.

  697. As we pick up our study in this letter once again,

  698. we've seen in the introduction to it in these opening verses,

  699. from verse 1 to 12, where Peter is writing to a people,

  700. God's people who are in a situation where they've been scattered far and wide,

  701. a people who are suffering and struggling and with many different things.

  702. And at the same time, a people who are being reminded that they are precious to God.

  703. That's Paul's.

  704. Peter's reason for writing to them is to remind them of whose people they are

  705. and the great hope that is theirs through Jesus Christ.

  706. To that end, he's reminding of the many different precious truths that they have.

  707. That there is this eternal hope.

  708. That there is an inheritance for his people.

  709. An inheritance that will never fade or perish.

  710. A reminder that a day is coming when Christ will return.

  711. And a day that they are to be prepared and ready for.

  712. And that through faith in Jesus Christ,

  713. they have that outcome of their faith,

  714. the salvation of their souls, as it says in verse 9.

  715. So there's many great promises and many great truths

  716. that they are to hold on to in the midst of all the challenges that they are facing.

  717. But as we've been going through in this introduction,

  718. the question that they might have as we move into the body of the letter,

  719. the thought that might be theirs is,

  720. how is all of this going to help me now, here in my need?

  721. The people may have been thinking that in Peter's day in the same way

  722. that many of us may be thinking that today as well.

  723. How is all of these truths,

  724. how are they going to help me on a day-to-day basis?

  725. What difference do they make to my life in the here and now?

  726. How does or how can it make a difference to my life just now?

  727. Well, from verse 13 and through the rest of the letter,

  728. he is going to show the difference that this makes.

  729. He's going to show us just how, in a practical way,

  730. the outworking of all of these truths affect our lives on a day-to-day basis.

  731. And the great difference that they make to us,

  732. not just how we are to live in this world,

  733. as our people who are very individualistic,

  734. or how we are to live in this world just for ourselves,

  735. but more how we are to live for one another.

  736. And above all, how we are to live for God.

  737. Knowing that even in the midst of everything that we go through,

  738. and as the people here in Peter's day,

  739. we're going through all these different trials,

  740. and perhaps feeling, you know,

  741. where is God in the midst of all this?

  742. Has he left us?

  743. Has he abandoned us?

  744. That God is not far away.

  745. And we are to remember that for ourselves too.

  746. God is with us.

  747. God is near and near to help.

  748. Remember, he's writing here,

  749. not just to help them to survive in this world,

  750. and to get by in this world.

  751. He's writing to help them to thrive in this world.

  752. And that's what we want for ourselves too,

  753. isn't it not?

  754. That we will be a people who thrive for God

  755. and for his kingdom in this world

  756. through knowing him.

  757. And what is at the heart of this life

  758. that they are to live,

  759. and the way that they are to live,

  760. is really these verses that I've just read to you.

  761. That we are to be a people

  762. who are called and who live a holy life.

  763. It revolves, it hinges on these verses.

  764. Verse 15 and 16,

  765. as he who called you is holy,

  766. you also be holy in all your conduct.

  767. Since it is written,

  768. you shall be holy,

  769. for I am holy.

  770. This is not something new to the people.

  771. It's not a new command to the people.

  772. It's a command founded in the Old Testament

  773. in the book of Leviticus,

  774. where this is quoted from.

  775. As it says there,

  776. since it is written,

  777. you shall be holy,

  778. for I am holy.

  779. He's quoting there in Leviticus chapter 11,

    Leviticus 11:44

  780. verse 44,

  781. a command that God gave to the children of Israel

  782. as they were coming out

  783. from being under the bondage of Egypt.

  784. He told them,

  785. you be a people who are holy,

  786. for I am holy.

  787. But what does it mean to be holy?

  788. That's perhaps the key question here.

  789. Maybe you think of holiness

  790. as something for others,

  791. something for the elite of God's people,

  792. something I could never achieve,

  793. something that is a standard

  794. that is too high for me to attain.

  795. Well, the word holy at its root

  796. has the idea of a people

  797. or a being set apart.

  798. And in particular,

  799. being set apart for God.

  800. A people who love him

  801. and live for him.

  802. That's what he is calling us to be

  803. as a people.

  804. A people set apart for him.

  805. Living for him.

  806. And that's what we see

  807. in this section

  808. is about being obedient to God.

  809. Not being pulled back

  810. into our former ways

  811. or the past ways of our life.

  812. Losing hope of faith in God.

  813. Thinking that he's left us

  814. but instead striving

  815. more and more

  816. for this holiness,

  817. this living for him.

  818. It's what Peter called

  819. the people to then.

  820. It's what he's calling us

  821. to now as well.

  822. It is something

  823. that we are to strive for.

  824. Something that every one of us

  825. should pursue

  826. with all our heart,

  827. with all our being.

  828. To be a holy people.

  829. A people set apart

  830. and living for God.

  831. But in all honesty,

  832. who of us feel holy today?

  833. There's so much

  834. that goes on around us

  835. in that our holiness

  836. seems that's something

  837. that cannot be attained.

  838. There's a book

  839. written by Kevin DeYoung.

  840. It's called

  841. The Hole in Our Holiness.

  842. And in the first chapter,

  843. he says

  844. that the hole in our holiness

  845. is that we don't care

  846. much about it

  847. and seldom pursue

  848. after it.

  849. He says

  850. the sadness is

  851. that we can focus

  852. on what Christ

  853. has saved us from,

  854. which is great,

  855. but we have lost sight

  856. of what Christ

  857. has saved us to.

  858. A pursuit

  859. of a holy life.

  860. And that's what we're called to.

  861. Not just to recognize

  862. the wonder

  863. of what Christ

  864. has saved us from,

  865. but more so

  866. as we go on,

  867. what he has saved us to

  868. in our way

  869. that we live.

  870. And you see here

  871. how holiness

  872. is linked

  873. to our conduct

  874. in verse 15.

  875. He has called you

  876. to holiness.

  877. He who called you

  878. is holy.

  879. You also be holy

  880. in all your conduct,

  881. in everything

  882. that you do.

  883. This impacts

  884. everything

  885. in your life.

  886. And so,

  887. from verse 13

  888. through really

  889. the rest

  890. of the letter,

  891. he gives us

  892. practical ways

  893. to live

  894. this holy life.

  895. Set apart

  896. for God

  897. and living

  898. for Him.

  899. And there's three things

  900. that we're going

  901. to think about

  902. as we start

  903. this next section

  904. today.

  905. One is

  906. being ready.

  907. What we are to be.

  908. The first thing,

  909. being ready.

  910. The second thing

  911. is being responsive.

  912. And the third thing

  913. is remember

  914. we are being redeemed.

  915. We are being redeemed

  916. at a great price.

  917. And it's

  918. grounded

  919. in what is said

  920. in the opening

  921. of this letter

  922. up to verse 12.

  923. Because you notice

  924. in verse 13

  925. the first word

  926. there is

  927. therefore.

  928. So in other words,

  929. in light of everything

  930. that we'd said

  931. up to this point,

  932. therefore,

  933. this is how

  934. you are to live.

  935. Therefore,

  936. this is what

  937. you are to do.

  938. So he's reminded

  939. of them

  940. of the hope.

  941. He's reminded them

  942. of the inheritance.

  943. He reminded them

  944. of all these

  945. wonderful promises,

  946. the outcome

  947. of their faith,

  948. the salvation

  949. of their souls.

  950. He's saying

  951. these are not

  952. just things

  953. that are

  954. at a distance

  955. from you.

  956. These are things

  957. that you take

  958. with you

  959. every day

  960. of your life

  961. and everywhere

  962. that you go.

  963. Therefore,

  964. he says,

  965. hold on

  966. to these truths

  967. and take them

  968. into every aspect

  969. of your conduct

  970. in this world

  971. because they affect

  972. everything

  973. about you.

  974. And the first thing

  975. he says here

  976. is,

  977. therefore,

  978. be ready.

  979. Be ready.

  980. A preacher

  981. once told

  982. his congregation

  983. a story.

  984. He said to them,

  985. I'm not a connoisseur

  986. of great art,

  987. but from time

  988. to time,

  989. he said,

  990. I like to go in

  991. and see

  992. in museums

  993. and different places,

  994. galleries,

  995. paintings

  996. and paintings

  997. that give

  998. a clear picture

  999. of something

  1000. that really

  1001. speak

  1002. a powerful,

  1003. a strong message

  1004. to me.

  1005. And he said,

  1006. some time ago

  1007. I saw a picture

1008. and it was a picture

  1009. of an old

  1010. burnt out

  1011. mountain shack.

  1012. A place

  1013. that was

  1014. a people's home.

  1015. But all that remained

  1016. of it

  1017. was the chimney

  1018. and there was

  1019. charred,

  1020. burnt out debris

  1021. all around.

  1022. But in the picture

  1023. there were

  1024. two people.

  1025. one was

  1026. a man

  1027. who looked

  1028. quite old,

  1029. dressed just

  1030. in very little

  1031. clothes,

  1032. dirty clothes,

  1033. worn out clothes.

  1034. And beside him

  1035. was a little boy

  1036. clutching

  1037. what looked like

  1038. a patched up

  1039. pair of overalls.

  1040. And the child

  1041. was crying.

  1042. And beneath

  1043. the picture

  1044. there was

  1045. the words

  1046. which the artist

  1047. felt

  1048. spoke of what

  1049. this picture

  1050. illustrated.

  1051. Simple words

  1052. the preacher said

  1053. that presented

  1054. profound theology

  1055. and philosophy

  1056. for life.

  1057. And the words

  1058. were this

  1059. hush

  1060. child

  1061. God's

  1062. not

  1063. dead.

  1064. And the preacher

1065. took it in this way

  1066. as a reminder

  1067. that so much

  1068. in life

  1069. just seems

  1070. like a burnt

  1071. out ruin.

  1072. A picture

  1073. of despair

  1074. and of hopelessness.

  1075. And yet

  1076. there is still

  1077. that great truth.

  1078. God's

  1079. not

  1080. dead.

  1081. And as

  1082. Peter is writing

  1083. to his people

  1084. here

  1085. and as he writes

  1086. to ourselves

  1087. today

  1088. our impression

  1089. in this world

  1090. can be one

  1091. that's full of

  1092. chaos.

  1093. But we need

  1094. to be reminded

  1095. too

  1096. God's

  1097. not

  1098. dead.

  1099. In fact

  1100. God is

  1101. reigning.

  1102. He is

  1103. alive

  1104. and he is

  1105. in control

  1106. of this

  1107. world.

  1108. And as we

  1109. think of

  1110. the challenges

  1111. that people

  1112. faced in

  1113. Peter's day

  1114. and the

  1115. many challenges

  1116. that we face

  1117. ourselves

  1118. you could look

  1119. at Peter's day

  1120. and say

  1121. it would be

  1122. easy for them

  1123. to give up

  1124. and to say

  1125. what's the

  1126. point

  1127. to throw

  1128. in the towel

  1129. and say

  1130. yes I have

  1131. my faith

  1132. but I may

  1133. as well

  1134. just hide

  1135. away

  1136. and avoid

  1137. all the

  1138. hassle

  1139. of this

  1140. world

  1141. if all

  1142. that my

  1143. faith

  1144. brings

  1145. to me

  1146. is

  1147. persecution

  1148. and

  1149. suffering.

  1150. I can

  1151. do my

  1152. duty

  1153. and that's

  1154. it.

  1155. And it

  1156. may be

  1157. the kind

  1158. of impression

  1159. that we

  1160. have in

  1161. this world

  1162. that we

  1163. live in

  1164. today.

  1165. What's

  1166. the point?

  1167. Even if

  1168. I have

  1169. faith

  1170. what difference

  1171. does it

  1172. make?

  1173. What impact

  1174. can it

  1175. make

  1176. in this

  1177. world?

  1178. Well Peter

  1179. is writing

  1180. to remind

  1181. them and

  1182. us of

  1183. the great

  1184. difference

  1185. that it

  1186. makes to

  1187. be a

  1188. people who

  1189. are holy.

  1190. A people

  1191. who are set

  1192. apart for

  1193. God.

  1194. Who can be

  1195. used by

  1196. God.

  1197. And so the

  1198. first thing

  1199. he says is

  1200. be ready.

  1201. In verse

  1202. 13,

  1203. preparing your

  1204. minds for

  1205. action and

  1206. being sober

  1207. minded,

  1208. set your

  1209. hope fully

  1210. on the

  1211. grace that

  1212. will be

  1213. brought to

  1214. you at

  1215. the

  1216. revelation

  1217. of Jesus

  1218. Christ.

  1219. So one of

  1220. the truths

  1221. that he's

  1222. already told

  1223. them of in

  1224. the introduction,

  1225. the revelation

  1226. of Jesus

  1227. Christ,

  1228. that speaks

  1229. of in

  1230. verse 5,

  1231. you who by

  1232. God's power

  1233. are being

  1234. guarded through

  1235. faith for

  1236. our salvation,

  1237. ready to be

  1238. revealed in

  1239. the last

  1240. time.

  1241. And he

  1242. speaks about

  1243. it there

  1244. again in

  1245. verse 7,

  1246. the glory

  1247. and honour

  1248. at the

  1249. revelation

  1250. of Jesus

  1251. Christ.

  1252. So now he's

  1253. saying you

  1254. take this

  1255. into your

  1256. life on a

  1257. day to day

  1258. basis,

  1259. preparing your

  1260. minds,

  1261. girding up the

  1262. loins of

  1263. your mind,

  1264. it says in

  1265. the AV,

  1266. and in the

  1267. footnote at

  1268. the bottom

  1269. of the ESV.

  1270. And the

  1271. people in

  1272. that day

  1273. would have

  1274. been familiar

  1275. with this

  1276. phrase,

  1277. gird up the

  1278. loins of

  1279. your mind.

  1280. The kind

  1281. of clothes

  1282. that they

  1283. wore in

  1284. those days

  1285. were long

  1286. tunics and

  1287. gowns that

  1288. went right

  1289. down to

  1290. their feet.

  1291. And if

  1292. they were

  1293. called to

  1294. action,

  1295. if they were

  1296. called to

  1297. work or

  1298. to war or

  1299. to battle,

  1300. any of

  1301. these things,

  1302. they had to

  1303. prepare.

  1304. And they

  1305. prepared by

  1306. rolling up

  1307. their gowns,

  1308. their tunics,

  1309. and tucking

  1310. them into

  1311. their belt.

  1312. That is what

  1313. is meant by

  1314. gird up your

  1315. loins for

  1316. action.

  1317. So here

  1318. he is saying

  1319. prepare your

  1320. minds,

  1321. gird up the

  1322. loins of

  1323. your minds

  1324. for action.

  1325. He's saying

  1326. be ready

  1327. for action.

  1328. This is how

  1329. you are to

  1330. live,

  1331. prepared and

  1332. ready for

  1333. anything that's

  1334. going to come

  1335. your way.

  1336. Be ready.

  1337. He is saying

  1338. that there

  1339. will be and

  1340. there have

  1341. been challenges

  1342. in your

  1343. life,

  1344. but prepare

  1345. yourselves.

  1346. when we

  1347. ask ourselves

  1348. is that

  1349. how we

  1350. live?

  1351. Is that

  1352. how you

  1353. live today?

  1354. Do you

  1355. prepare for

  1356. the battles

  1357. of this

  1358. world on

  1359. a daily

  1360. basis?

  1361. Did you

  1362. prepare yourself

  1363. for coming to

  1364. church today?

  1365. Or did you

  1366. just rush into

  1367. the day?

  1368. We're all

  1369. guilty of it,

  1370. aren't we?

  1371. Just rushing

  1372. on with the

  1373. day where we

  1374. don't prepare

  1375. ourselves by

  1376. coming to

  1377. God,

  1378. preparing our

  1379. minds for

  1380. action by

  1381. being sober

  1382. minded,

  1383. setting our

  1384. hope fully

  1385. on the

  1386. grace that

  1387. will be

  1388. brought to

  1389. us at the

  1390. revelation of

  1391. Jesus Christ.

  1392. What a

  1393. difference it

  1394. would make

  1395. if that's

  1396. how we

  1397. started our

  1398. day.

  1399. Yes,

  1400. we're going

  1401. to go into

  1402. the challenges

  1403. of this

  1404. world.

  1405. We're going

  1406. to go into

  1407. worship and

  1408. fellowship with

  1409. God's people,

  1410. which is

  1411. wonderful,

  1412. but then on

  1413. the Monday

  1414. and the

  1415. Tuesday and

  1416. the Wednesday

  1417. we go into

  1418. each day with

  1419. the challenges

  1420. that it brings,

  1421. but do we

  1422. go into

  1423. it prepared,

  1424. setting our

  1425. hope fully on

  1426. the revelation

  1427. of Jesus

  1428. Christ, that

  1429. great hope

  1430. that we have.

  1431. Don't live in

  1432. your former

  1433. ways, don't

  1434. slip back into

  1435. them, put

  1436. them away

  1437. and instead

  1438. prepare yourselves

  1439. with the

  1440. holiness of

  1441. God.

  1442. Like Paul

  1443. says in

  1444. Ephesians

  1445. 6, we

  1446. prepare by

  1447. putting on

  1448. the whole

  1449. armor of

  1450. God.

  1451. So are

  1452. we ready?

  1453. The danger

  1454. for the

  1455. people then

  1456. was they

  1457. just sat

  1458. back idly.

  1459. What's the

  1460. point?

  1461. The danger

  1462. for ourselves

  1463. today is to

  1464. have that

  1465. same kind

  1466. of attitude.

  1467. What's the

  1468. point?

  1469. Well, hope

  1470. in Jesus

  1471. Christ gives

  1472. us that

  1473. point.

  1474. Martin

  1475. Luther once

  1476. said that

  1477. through living

  1478. faith which

  1479. the Holy

  1480. Spirit instills

  1481. into the

  1482. heart simply

  1483. cannot be

  1484. idle.

  1485. It's a

  1486. living, it's

  1487. an active

  1488. faith and

  1489. that's the

  1490. way that we

  1491. are to live.

  1492. Kevin de

  1493. Young in his

  1494. book says

  1495. the best

  1496. looking Christian

  1497. is the one

  1498. growing by the

  1499. Spirit into

  1500. the likeness of

  1501. Christ.

  1502. That is what

  1503. we are to

  1504. strive for

  1505. by being

  1506. ready, by

  1507. preparing our

  1508. minds for

  1509. action, to

  1510. strive after

  1511. holiness.

  1512. The second

  1513. thing we see

  1514. here is that

  1515. we are to be

  1516. a people who

  1517. are responsive.

  1518. In verse 14

  1519. it says,

  1520. as obedient

  1521. children do

  1522. not be

  1523. conformed to

  1524. the passions

  1525. of your

  1526. former

  1527. ignorance but

  1528. as he who

  1529. called you

  1530. is holy,

  1531. you also

  1532. be holy

  1533. in all

  1534. your conduct.

  1535. We are to

  1536. be a people

  1537. who are

  1538. obedient,

  1539. who are

  1540. responsive.

  1541. How are you

  1542. when it comes

  1543. to being

  1544. told what

  1545. to do?

  1546. What's your

  1547. response like

  1548. when it

  1549. happens?

  1550. Just like we

  1551. were thinking

  1552. with the

  1553. children, if

  1554. someone tells

  1555. you to do

  1556. something, do

  1557. you go and

  1558. do it

  1559. immediately or

  1560. does it

  1561. depend on

  1562. who says

  1563. it to

  1564. you?

  1565. It

  1566. sometimes

  1567. does depend

  1568. on who

  1569. tells us.

  1570. If we

  1571. know that

  1572. person, if

  1573. we love

  1574. that person,

  1575. want to do

  1576. good for

  1577. that person,

  1578. we respond

  1579. immediately

  1580. perhaps.

  1581. But if

  1582. that person

  1583. hasn't been

  1584. good to

  1585. us, if

  1586. that person

  1587. has mistreated

  1588. us, do

  1589. we respond

  1590. in the same

  1591. way?

  1592. Are we

  1593. obedient to

  1594. God?

  1595. If we

  1596. say, well

  1597. God hasn't

  1598. remembered me,

  1599. God hasn't

  1600. loved me,

  1601. why should

  1602. I respond

  1603. to him?

  1604. Because of

  1605. all that he

  1606. has done

  1607. for us,

  1608. which we'll

  1609. see in a

  1610. moment.

  1611. But we

  1612. are to be a

  1613. people who

  1614. are obedient

  1615. to God.

  1616. God gives

  1617. us a call

  1618. here to

  1619. holiness,

  1620. and it's a

  1621. call that

  1622. demands an

  1623. instant response.

  1624. In all our

  1625. conduct, this

  1626. is how we

  1627. are to live.

  1628. Thomas

  1629. Kempis

  1630. once said,

  1631. instant

  1632. obedience

  1633. is the

  1634. only kind

  1635. of obedience

  1636. that is.

  1637. Delayed

  1638. obedience

  1639. is

  1640. disobedience.

  1641. Whoever

  1642. strives to

  1643. withdraw from

  1644. obedience

  1645. withdraws

  1646. from grace.

  1647. Again, we

  1648. think of the

  1649. command and

  1650. the situation

  1651. of the

  1652. people here.

  1653. They were

  1654. experiencing

  1655. hard times,

  1656. perhaps even

  1657. questioning what

  1658. God was

  1659. doing for

  1660. them and

  1661. where he

  1662. was.

  1663. Why should

  1664. I do

  1665. something for

  1666. him?

  1667. Their focus

  1668. was gone.

  1669. It seemed

  1670. their hope

  1671. was gone.

  1672. But yet

  1673. God calls

  1674. them to

  1675. holiness.

  1676. Be holy

  1677. because I

  1678. am holy.

  1679. Is that the

  1680. case for you

  1681. today?

  1682. Are you

  1683. saying,

  1684. how dare

  1685. God make

  1686. demands of

  1687. me?

  1688. The devil

  1689. will put

  1690. into your

  1691. head the

  1692. same doubts

  1693. and fears

  1694. and concerns

  1695. that the

  1696. people had

  1697. in Peter's

  1698. day.

  1699. Where is

  1700. God?

  1701. You can

  1702. become blind

  1703. to the

  1704. fact that

  1705. he is

  1706. there.

  1707. What's

  1708. happened?

  1709. Paul,

  1710. writing to

  1711. the church

  1712. in Corinth,

  1713. he tells

  1714. us what's

  1715. happened.

  1716. He says

  1717. that in

  1718. their case,

  1719. the God

  1720. of this

  1721. world has

  1722. blinded the

  1723. minds of

  1724. unbelievers

  1725. to keep

  1726. them from

  1727. seeing the

  1728. light of

  1729. the gospel

  1730. in the

  1731. glory of

  1732. Christ,

  1733. who is

  1734. the image

  1735. of God.

  1736. There is

  1737. another one

  1738. at work

  1739. who blinds

  1740. us to

  1741. seeing this.

  1742. And in

  1743. our blindness

  1744. we lose

  1745. hope.

  1746. But as we

  1747. looked at

  1748. last time,

  1749. we are to

  1750. have eyes

  1751. of faith.

  1752. We are to

  1753. fix our

  1754. eyes on

  1755. God.

  1756. And in

  1757. the previous

  1758. chapter in

  1759. 2 Corinthians,

  1760. in chapter

  1761. 3,

  1762. Paul speaks

  1763. to them

  1764. there of

  1765. the one

  1766. who opens

  1767. their eyes.

  1768. He says

  1769. in chapter

  1770. 3,

  1771. verse 16,

  1772. but when

  1773. one turns

  1774. to the

  1775. Lord,

  1776. the veil

  1777. is removed.

  1778. He was

  1779. talking about

  1780. Moses and

  1781. the veiled

  1782. glory of

  1783. God.

  1784. But when

  1785. we turn

  1786. to God

  1787. in faith,

  1788. this veil

  1789. is removed

  1790. and we

  1791. all with

  1792. unveiled

  1793. face behold

  1794. the glory

  1795. of the

  1796. Lord as

  1797. being

  1798. transformed

  1799. into the

  1800. same image

  1801. from one

  1802. degree of

  1803. glory.

  1804. to

  1805. another.

  1806. So the

  1807. more we

  1808. fix our

  1809. eyes on

  1810. the Lord,

  1811. the more

  1812. we are

  1813. transformed

  1814. by Him.

  1815. We are

  1816. transformed

  1817. into the

  1818. same image,

  1819. one degree

  1820. of glory

  1821. to another,

  1822. bit by

  1823. bit.

  1824. And that

  1825. is the way

  1826. our holiness

  1827. develops.

  1828. Seeing God,

  1829. seeing Jesus.

  1830. Kevin

  1831. again in

  1832. his book,

  1833. he says,

  1834. it may

  1835. sound boring

  1836. and out

  1837. of date,

  1838. but it

  1839. just happens

  1840. to be

  1841. true.

  1842. The way

  1843. to grow

  1844. in your

  1845. relationship

  1846. with Jesus

  1847. is to

  1848. pray,

  1849. read your

  1850. Bible,

  1851. go to

  1852. church,

  1853. all of

  1854. these things,

  1855. things that

  1856. people will

  1857. say we do

  1858. not need,

  1859. we do,

  1860. to see

  1861. the glory

  1862. of God

  1863. and to

  1864. fix our

  1865. eyes on

  1866. Him.

  1867. So are

  1868. we fixing

  1869. our eyes

  1870. on Jesus?

  1871. Is our

  1872. hope of

  1873. salvation

  1874. in Him,

  1875. are we

  1876. coming to

  1877. the foot

  1878. of the

  1879. cross?

  1880. Because when

  1881. we do,

  1882. we behold

  1883. His glory

  1884. more and

  1885. more.

  1886. And that's

  1887. what Peter

  1888. thoroughly

  1889. goes on to

  1890. show us

  1891. here.

  1892. the wonder

  1893. of our

  1894. salvation

  1895. and the

  1896. way that

  1897. we have

  1898. been

  1899. purchased.

  1900. In

  1901. verse 18,

  1902. knowing that

  1903. you were

  1904. ransomed

  1905. from the

  1906. futile ways

  1907. inherited

  1908. from your

  1909. forefathers,

  1910. not with

  1911. perishable

  1912. things such

  1913. as silver

  1914. and gold,

  1915. but with

  1916. the precious

  1917. blood of

  1918. Christ.

  1919. We are

  1920. being ransomed.

  1921. What are

  1922. we looking

  1923. to?

  1924. Are we

  1925. looking to

  1926. the cross?

  1927. That hymn

  1928. that when

  1929. I survey

  1930. the wondrous

  1931. cross on

  1932. which the

  1933. prince of

  1934. glory died,

  1935. my riches

  1936. gain I

  1937. count but

  1938. loss and

  1939. poor contempt

  1940. on all

  1941. my pride.

  1942. Closing

  1943. words of

  1944. that hymn

  1945. are,

  1946. love so

  1947. amazing,

  1948. so divine,

  1949. demands my

  1950. soul,

  1951. my life,

  1952. my all.

  1953. What does

  1954. it mean

  1955. today for

  1956. you to

  1957. be ransomed?

  1958. are you

  1959. redeemed?

  1960. Perhaps you

  1961. say,

  1962. well what

  1963. need do

  1964. I have

  1965. of being

  1966. ransomed?

  1967. A ransom

  1968. is something

  1969. that happens

  1970. to people

  1971. who are

  1972. taken hostage

  1973. or kidnapped,

  1974. but you

  1975. say,

  1976. I am

  1977. free.

  1978. But are

  1979. you?

  1980. That is a

  1981. big question

  1982. for our

  1983. world today.

  1984. Are we

  1985. free?

  1986. Are we

  1987. free from

  1988. every law

  1989. and demand

  1990. of this

  1991. world to

  1992. just do

  1993. as we

  1994. please?

  1995. Well the

  1996. Bible speaks

  1997. to us about

  1998. being slaves,

  1999. enslaved to

  2000. sin,

  2001. held hostage

  2002. by it,

  2003. but it also

  2004. speaks at the

  2005. same time

  2006. about the

  2007. cost of

  2008. being set

  2009. free.

  2010. Romans 6

  2011. is a

  2012. wonderful

  2013. passage on

  2014. this.

  2015. I am

  2016. just going

  2017. to read

  2018. a few

  2019. verses from

  2020. it.

  2021. When you

  2022. were slaves

  2023. of sin,

  2024. you were

  2025. free in

  2026. regard to

  2027. righteousness.

  2028. In other

  2029. words,

  2030. it meant

  2031. nothing to

  2032. you.

  2033. But what

  2034. fruit were

  2035. you getting

  2036. at that

  2037. time from

  2038. the things

  2039. of which

  2040. you are

  2041. now ashamed?

  2042. For the

  2043. end of

  2044. those things

  2045. is death.

  2046. But now

  2047. that you

  2048. have been

  2049. set free

  2050. from sin

  2051. and have

  2052. become

  2053. slaves of

  2054. God,

  2055. the fruit

  2056. you get

  2057. leads to

  2058. sanctification

  2059. and its

  2060. end,

  2061. eternal

  2062. life.

  2063. For the

  2064. wages of

  2065. sin is

  2066. death,

  2067. but the

  2068. free gift

  2069. of God

  2070. is eternal

  2071. life in

  2072. Christ

  2073. Jesus,

  2074. our Lord.

  2075. So do

  2076. you know

  2077. this

  2078. freedom?

  2079. That is

  2080. what Peter

  2081. is pointing

  2082. us to

  2083. here,

  2084. knowing that

  2085. you were

  2086. ransomed

  2087. from the

  2088. futile

  2089. wastes,

  2090. not with

  2091. perishable

  2092. things such

  2093. as silver

  2094. or gold.

  2095. Just like

  2096. that psalm

  2097. we sang,

  2098. Psalm 49,

  2099. to redeem

  2100. my life

  2101. is costly,

  2102. none

  2103. sufficient

  2104. price can

  2105. pay.

  2106. none

  2107. of us

  2108. can

  2109. pay

  2110. for our

  2111. salvation,

  2112. and we

  2113. are slaves

  2114. to sin,

  2115. we are

  2116. held ransom

  2117. and hostage

  2118. by sin.

  2119. How can

  2120. we possibly

  2121. be free?

  2122. Because we

  2123. are ransomed,

  2124. not by silver

  2125. or gold,

  2126. but with the

  2127. precious blood

  2128. of Christ.

  2129. And that

  2130. is what we

  2131. are to hold

  2132. on to,

  2133. what a price

  2134. has been

  2135. paid for

  2136. our freedom.

  2137. as we

  2138. approach

  2139. the time

  2140. of year

  2141. when we

  2142. remember

  2143. the many

  2144. who gave

  2145. their lives

  2146. in conflict,

  2147. when we

  2148. think of

  2149. the great

  2150. cost of

  2151. our freedom

  2152. through war

  2153. and the

  2154. shedding of

  2155. blood of

  2156. many,

  2157. here we

  2158. are reminded

  2159. of the

  2160. cost of

  2161. our freedom

  2162. from sin,

  2163. a price

  2164. none of

  2165. us could

  2166. pay,

  2167. but a

  2168. price that

  2169. has been

  2170. paid for

  2171. us.

  2172. And this

  2173. is how

  2174. we are

  2175. to live.

  2176. As verse

  2177. 21 says,

  2178. who through

  2179. him are

  2180. believers in

  2181. God who

  2182. raised him

  2183. from the

  2184. dead and

  2185. gave him

  2186. glory so

  2187. that your

  2188. faith and

  2189. hope are

  2190. in God.

  2191. Is that

  2192. true for

  2193. you today?

  2194. He says

  2195. to be

  2196. holy.

  2197. He goes

  2198. on, as

  2199. we'll see,

  2200. to outwork

  2201. this in

  2202. every aspect

  2203. of our

  2204. life and

  2205. our conduct,

  2206. but it

  2207. begins with

  2208. this hope

  2209. that is

  2210. found in

  2211. Christ.

  2212. It is not

  2213. something that

  2214. is just a

  2215. theology that

  2216. is taught,

  2217. something that

  2218. we can read

  2219. in a book.

  2220. It's something

  2221. that is in

  2222. our heart

  2223. and goes

  2224. with us

  2225. every day

  2226. of our

  2227. life.

  2228. We are to

  2229. take it

  2230. with us

  2231. from here

  2232. today,

  2233. to tomorrow,

  2234. into every

  2235. day that

  2236. lies ahead

  2237. as a

  2238. command.

  2239. Be holy,

  2240. for I am

  2241. holy.

  2242. Be set

  2243. apart.

  2244. It's not

  2245. something we

  2246. cannot be.

  2247. It is

  2248. something we

  2249. are to

  2250. strive for.

  2251. So may

  2252. God enable

  2253. us and

  2254. help us to

  2255. see what

  2256. has been

  2257. done for

  2258. us, but

  2259. we have been

  2260. saved to.

  2261. The more

  2262. we see the

  2263. beauty of

  2264. Christ, the

  2265. more we see

  2266. our need to

  2267. live for

  2268. him and

  2269. love him

  2270. who gave

  2271. himself for

  2272. us through

  2273. the precious

  2274. blood of

  2275. Christ that

  2276. has redeemed

  2277. us, that

  2278. we would

  2279. live through

  2280. faith and

  2281. hope in

  2282. God.

  2283. Let us

  2284. pray.

  2285. Our

  2286. Father in

  2287. heaven, may

  2288. you instruct

  2289. us and guide

  2290. us through

  2291. these words

  2292. to be a

  2293. people who

  2294. strive after

  2295. holiness, to

  2296. live for you

  2297. and to

  2298. recognize, yes

  2299. we fall

  2300. short, but

  2301. yes too, you

  2302. lift us up and

  2303. you help us, you

  2304. strengthen us to

  2305. go on.

  2306. So may you do

  2307. that for each

  2308. of us, we

  2309. ask in Jesus'

  2310. precious name.

  2311. Amen.

  2312. our closing item

  2313. of praise is

  2314. Psalm 16 in the

  2315. Sing Psalms.

  2316. Psalm 16 at

  2317. verse 8.

  2318. Again, just

  2319. reminds us where

  2320. our focus is to

  2321. be.

  2322. Before me

  2323. constantly, I

  2324. set the Lord

  2325. alone, because

  2326. he is at my

  2327. right hand.

  2328. I'll not be

  2329. overthrown.

  2330. We'll sing from

  2331. verse 8 to

  2332. 11 to God's

  2333. praise.

  2334. Thank you.

  2335. Thank you.

  2336. Thank you.

  2337. Thank you.

  2338. Thank you.

  2339. Amen.

  2340. Amen.

  2341. Amen.

  2342. Amen.

  2343. Amen.

  2344. Amen.

  2345. Amen.

  2346. Amen.

  2347. Amen.

  2348. Amen.

  2349. Amen.

  2350. Amen.

  2351. Amen.

  2352. Amen.

  2353. Amen.
