  1. this evening singing in Psalm 103, Psalm 103. That's in the Sing Psalms version on page 135.

  2. We'll sing verses 1 to 11, these first three sections.

  3. Praise God, my soul, with all my heart. Let me exalt His holy name. Forget not all His benefits.

  4. His praise, my soul, in song proclaim. The Lord forgives you all your sins and heals your sickness

  5. and distress. Your life He rescues from the grave and crowns you in His tenderness.

  6. So on down to verse 11, praise God, my soul. We'll stand to sing.

  7. Praise God, my soul, with all my heart. Let me exalt.

  8. His holy name. Forget not all His benefits. His praise, my soul, in song proclaim.

  9. The Lord forgives you all your sins and heals your sickness and distress.

  10. Your life He rescues from the grave and crowns you in His tenderness.

  11. He satisfies your deep desires from His unending source of good.

  12. So that just like the King of strength, your beautiful name God is in you.

  13. The Lord is born for righteous acts and trust is true.

  14. The Lord is merciful.

  15. The Lord is merciful.

  16. The Lord is merciful.

  17. Moses' name may go on his ways, his mighty deeds to Israel's sons.

  18. The Lord is merciful and kind to hang us low and full of grace.

  19. He will not constantly reproof or end his anger by his face.

  20. He does not punish our best deeds, forgive our sins, their just reward.

  21. How great is love that I ascend towards all those who fear the Lord.

  22. We're going to call upon the Lord again in prayer, so let's all just join together in prayer.

  23. Almighty and gracious God, as we give thanks for being able once again to gather here

  24. and to come before you as worshipers of your great name, we thank you for these words we

  25. have been singing, reminding us of your own unending stores of good for those who love

  26. you and for your own people down through the centuries, even from the beginning of the world.

  27. Lord, you have taken from these stores of good and dispensed them to your people.

  28. We thank you tonight, Lord, in the access we have to you, that we can seek from you, that

  29. you would dispense further from these stores of good that which would do us good this evening.

  30. We thank you, O Lord, that we can come to you and claim in the name of Christ access to the

  31. grace that is in you and to these stores of good and to these stores of good and to these

  32. that flow toward us so abundantly.

  33. We thank you that we have not earned them for ourselves.

  34. We thank you that they are indeed by your grace and the free gift by which you come to dispense

  35. your salvation.

  36. We thank you tonight for the way that you teach us, O Lord, of those great issues in

  37. your word that have to do with our redemption.

  38. And we thank you that in your word you have taken account of all our need as we find ourselves

  39. in this world.

  40. O Lord, bless us, we pray, as once again we gather here before you.

  41. Help us once again to turn our mind to those things that are revealed in your word that are

  42. of eternity, the things that belong to the most important issues that we can know in life,

  43. our own relationship with you, your own rule over us, the way in which you have provided

  44. redemption for us, the glorious attributes that belong to you, the way in which we can have

  45. our confidence in Christ and know that our life is secure in him.

  46. We pray, Lord, tonight that you would lead us further into the understanding of your truth,

  47. as you have revealed it to us in the gospel.

  48. We pray tonight that you would give to us further encouragement, Lord, to trust in you,

  49. in a world in which we find so much that discourages us, so much that causes us at times even to

  50. feel disconsolate and disappointed and disillusioned.

  51. Help us, Lord, we pray, to find our confidence in you.

  52. Help us to come to know that as we trust in you, so you have guaranteed to your people that victory

  53. that is especially brought to us in the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

  54. And enable us, Lord, as we continue to trust in you, that we may find day by day that your grace

  55. is channeled into our lives, that your strength is made perfect in our weakness, that we find the

  56. fulfillment of your promises to look after your people even as they go through this life.

  57. Bless us then, Lord, we pray, as a congregation of your people once again as we gather before you.

  58. Bless us, we pray, too, in all our other activities that accompany the worship of your name in our experience.

  59. We thank you, Lord, for all that we are enabled to partake of and take part in, Lord, in the course of each week as they go by.

  60. And we pray that you would bless all that we seek to do in your name with all the different activities and groups that meet from time to time.

  61. We, Lord, seek your blessing upon them all.

  62. Again, we pray your blessing for our children, for our young people, for our young adults, for those who, O Lord, receive instruction from your word,

  63. and for those who meet also in the upper years of life.

  64. Lord, we pray that you would bless each and all of these activities.

  65. We ask that your blessing will be especially upon your word to them.

  66. Anchor, O Lord, these young lives, especially in the things of your truth, and give them to be rooted and grounded in Christ himself,

  67. so that they have him as their sure foundation, that whatever things lie in a wait for them as their life develops,

  68. they may be sure that this is not going to change,

  69. that however many changes they may experience in the course of life,

  70. they may never find the foundation in Christ himself to be subject to any change or moving or any alteration.

  71. And so, Lord, we commend them to you.

  72. We give thanks for the many young families we have as a congregation.

  73. We give thanks for the many young people who come to attend the means of grace,

  74. the services such as these and other activities.

  75. And, Lord, we pray for them as we commend them to you tonight.

  76. We pray that you would go before them,

  77. that you would provide nourishment for them daily from your word.

  78. And we ask that they would indeed come to walk confidently in the steps of faith,

  79. trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  80. We ask tonight for those who may be struggling with their faith,

  81. struggling to deal with the issues that are in their life in providence.

  82. Lord, we pray for them.

  83. We know that there are some of us who find it difficult from day to day,

  84. who struggle with mental health issues,

  85. who find ourselves sometimes bewildered with what's happening in the world around us.

  86. Oh, Lord, we ask that you would grant us this stability

  87. that would be from your own guidance of us,

  88. from your own spirit at work within us,

  89. from that living relationship with you, Lord,

  90. that draws all our strength from you.

  91. Remember, we pray tonight,

  92. those who are laid aside with illnesses of various kinds,

  93. we commend to you, Lord, those who are receiving treatment,

  94. those who have been through operation and surgery in recent days.

  95. We ask, Lord, that you'd bless them

  96. and bring them back to health and to strength, we pray.

  97. We ask, Lord, that you'd bless Marianne as she recovers from her own surgery.

  98. We thank you that she is recovering.

  99. And we thank you, Lord, for all that she has done and continues to do in the congregation,

  100. and especially with our young people.

  101. And we pray that your hand will be upon her,

  102. that you will know, Lord, your strengthening,

  103. your guidance and your restoration of health to her at this time.

  104. And we pray, too, Lord, that you'd bless all others like her

  105. who are known to us at this time to be suffering from various types of illness,

  106. confined to hospitals, those in our care homes,

  107. those who are looked after by others at home.

  108. We pray for them, O Lord.

  109. We pray for those whose years have now reached the stage

  110. where their faculties physically or mentally have begun to fail.

  111. And, Lord, we pray for them.

  112. And we give thanks that despite our outward failures,

  113. Lord, your word assures us that our inward man is being renewed day by day.

  114. And we thank you that the spiritual condition of your people

  115. is constantly in your hand.

  116. And that even as we anticipate our bodily decay as the years go on,

  117. we thank you, Lord, that there is no decay

  118. in the life spiritually that you give to your people.

  119. Help us to hold on to and to cling to these great truths.

  120. We pray tonight, too, Lord, for those who mourn the passing of loved ones.

  121. We know, Lord, as each week goes by.

  122. We have pretty much each week that we experience here

  123. various deaths that affect families belonging to us as a congregation

  124. or in our community.

  125. We pray for them, O Lord, tonight as they seek to adjust to life without loved ones

  126. and also those who have lost loved ones in days gone by.

  127. We pray for them, Lord.

  128. And we pray for those especially in this week gone by

  129. that have had to bid farewell to their loved ones.

  130. We pray for Anne Chris as she misses her beloved Neil.

  131. We pray for herself and Martin and Christine and for the whole family.

  132. And we commend them to your care and ask that you would uphold her

  133. and all who help her at this time.

  134. And so we pray, Lord, for all others who mourn tonight in this troubled world of ours.

  135. And, Lord, we pray that we would never forget,

  136. even though they may have disappeared from news items,

  137. those in the world who suffer so greatly in various circumstances

  138. and conditions that are beyond our understanding and experience,

  139. those, Lord, especially who have the devastation of war,

  140. of famine, of being outcasts, of refugees.

  141. Oh, Lord, all of these great problems in our world

  142. and the management of them and sometimes the mismanagement of them,

  143. we, Lord, seek for the gospel to be blessed,

  144. for your kingdom to advance,

  145. for people to come to know the Lord Jesus Christ himself,

  146. for them to place and deposit their lives in his hand.

  147. And so we pray, Lord, for the gospel,

  148. for those who take the gospel to various parts of the world

  149. and face deprivation themselves and consequence.

  150. Oh, remember your people, we pray,

  151. as they carry the message of Christ

  152. into this world that so largely does not want it.

  153. And we ask for your Holy Spirit, Lord,

  154. to come to shine into people's hearts

  155. the truth as it is in Christ Jesus.

  156. When we read, Lord, in the earliest stages of the world

  157. that the Spirit of God hovered on the surface of the waters

  158. and that by your Spirit all of these things

  159. were kept together and managed,

  160. we pray, Lord, for the management of human lives

  161. to be brought under the directing of your Spirit,

  162. to be brought to know you as a Savior

  163. who is able to do so much, Lord,

  164. beyond what we are able to ask or even think.

  165. Oh, Lord, we pray for reviving power

  166. in our own experience.

  167. We pray that our own hearts will be

  168. reignited with the flames of your Spirit.

  169. We pray, oh, Lord, that you would come in our day

  170. and as we complain to you of how we find so little,

  171. oh, Lord, of an appetite for the things of God.

  172. And so we pray that you would re-instill in our hearts

  173. that hunger and thirst for righteousness

  174. that you tell us characterizes you people.

  175. And we pray for ourselves tonight

  176. that we may draw, Lord,

  177. our spiritual nourishment from you

  178. through the gospel.

  179. Hear us then, we pray now.

  180. Continue with us, guide us into your word,

  181. and pardon our sin for Jesus' sake.

  182. Amen.

  183. We're singing once again now to God's praise,

  184. and this time it's in Psalm 54.

  185. Psalm 54 in the Scottish Psalter,

  186. page 284,

  187. verses 1 to 7.

  188. Save me, O God, by thy great name,

  189. and judge me by thy strength.

  190. My prayer here, O God,

  191. give ear unto my words at length.

  192. For they that strangers are to me,

  193. do up against me rise.

  194. Oppressors seek my soul,

  195. and God set not before their eyes.

  196. Psalm 54, verses 1 to 7,

    Psalms 54 chapter mention

  197. to God's praise.

  198. Save me, O God,

  199. by thy great name,

  200. and judge me by thy strength.

  201. My prayer here, O God,

  202. give ear unto my words at length.

  203. For they that strangers are to me,

  204. do up against me rise.

  205. O presence of sin,

  206. my soul, and God set not before their eyes.

  207. The Lord, my God,

  208. my help,

  209. Lord, that for I am bold,

  210. He take the heart with every one,

  211. that hath my soul of old.

  212. But do my name,

  213. and he is the child,

  214. may save and ill be paid.

  215. O Lord, my truth,

  216. save but them all,

  217. and weep and lead away.

  218. I will have sacrifice to thee,

  219. and with thee,

  220. and with thee worthiness.

  221. Thy name, O Lord,

  222. be cost is good,

  223. with grace,

  224. with grace I will forfez.

  225. For he hath me delivered,

  226. from all my mercilies.

  227. And this desire,

  228. my life hath seen,

  229. upon my enemies.

  230. Let's now turn to read God's word.

  231. This evening we'll find that in 2 Timothy.

  232. The second letter of Paul to Timothy,

  233. chapter one.

  234. Reading through the whole chapter.

  235. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus,

  236. by the will of God,

  237. according to the promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus.

  238. To Timothy, my beloved child.

  239. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father,

  240. and Christ Jesus our Lord.

  241. I thank God, whom I serve,

  242. as did my ancestors,

  243. with a clear conscience,

  244. as I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day,

  245. as I remember your tears.

  246. I long to see you,

  247. that I may be filled with joy.

  248. I am reminded of your sincere faith,

  249. a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois

  250. and your mother Eunice,

  251. and now I am sure dwells in you as well.

  252. For this reason,

  253. I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God,

  254. which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

  255. For God gave us a spirit not of fear,

  256. but of power and love and self-control.

  257. Therefore, do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord,

  258. nor of me, his prisoner,

  259. but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God,

  260. who saved us and called us to a holy calling,

  261. not because of our works,

  262. but because of his own purpose and grace,

  263. which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,

  264. and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Saviour Christ Jesus,

  265. who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,

  266. for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher,

  267. which is why I suffer as I do.

  268. But I am not ashamed,

  269. for I know whom I have believed,

  270. and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me.

  271. Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me,

  272. in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

  273. By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us,

  274. guard the good deposit entrusted to you.

  275. You are aware that all who are in Asia turned away from me,

  276. among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes.

  277. May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus,

  278. for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains.

  279. But when he arrived in Rome,

  280. he searched for me earnestly and found me.

  281. May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day.

  282. And you well know all the service he rendered at Ephesus.

  283. And may God once again bless to us our reading of his holy word.

  284. Let's now sing once again, before we turn to this passage,

  285. Psalm 125 on page 419.

  286. Psalm 125, the whole of the Psalm.

  287. We are going to be looking later in a moment at what Paul referred to as his own security in Christ Jesus, his Saviour.

  288. And here's a reminder, a Psalm that reminds us how the Psalmist found an illustration of his protective,

  289. God's protective care and his security, even in the physical creation,

  290. as the mountains around Jerusalem stood in such a grand, immovable way.

  291. And so he found that as an illustration of the security that he himself had in God as his Saviour.

  292. They in the Lord that firmly trust shall be like Zion Hill.

  293. which at no time can be removed.

  294. but stand by the Lord that shall be like Zion Hill.

  295. then the Lord that firmly trust shall be like Zion Hill.

  296. which at no time can be removed.

  297. which at no time can be removed.

  298. but stand the death was still.

  299. as round about Jerusalem,

  300. the mountains and the way.

  301. I find the commandments God is where one nation can bring forth to him.

  302. The mahdoll

  303. What ill men shawed upon the Lord of just men shall not lie,

  304. lest righteous men set forth their hands unto iniquity.

  305. Good power to all, O Sáad, be good, thy goodness stormed in part,

  306. and do thy good to all, O Sáad, a bright within their heart.

  307. But as for Son has turned aside, after their crooked way,

  308. God shall be poor, when wicked men on Israel these shall see.

  309. Now please turn with me to 2 Timothy chapter 1.

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  310. 2 Timothy chapter 1, and especially words you'll find there in verse 12.

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  311. He's been talking here about how as a called apostle of God and preacher and apostle and teacher,

  312. his sufferings that he's endured are so keyed into this particular way in which he has served God.

  313. But he says,

  314. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed,

  315. and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me.

  316. Now one of Paul's great concerns in writing these letters to Timothy is that Timothy not only will be encouraged,

  317. but also prepared to meet with the difficulties that will still come in his way,

  318. and especially so when Paul himself is no longer in this world,

  319. and when he will no longer be receiving letters from the beloved apostle.

  320. As we see in this epistle itself, Paul is saying to Timothy,

  321. I'm now being poured out in verse chapter 4,

  322. and the time of my departure has come.

  323. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

  324. So he's alerting Timothy to the fact that his own future is safe in the hand of God,

  325. but he is going to actually face difficulties as he continues to serve the Lord Jesus Christ in this world.

  326. Which is why he says that both he and Timothy together must be partakers of the afflictions of the gospel.

  327. They must willingly take to themselves the share that God has appointed to them

  328. in whatever afflictions come their way as apostles or as servants or preachers of the gospel.

  329. And now he comes to bring Timothy's mind to what is actually foundational to his confidence

  330. and encouragement as he would go ahead and go on serving the Lord.

  331. He brings him really to the ground of confidence, the ground of confidence,

  332. indeed the only ground of confidence, which is Christ himself.

  333. He says, these are the sufferings I am suffering, but I am not ashamed,

  334. for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day

  335. what has been entrusted to me.

  336. Or we can translate it as we'll see what I have entrusted to him.

  337. So he's really putting it in the form of a brief personal testimony to Timothy.

  338. Paul is saying, this is my testimony.

  339. This is what I'm convinced of.

  340. This is what I'm leading you to actually keep in place for yourself as well.

  341. And of course, at the end of anyone's life in this world,

  342. if we know that somebody wants to speak to us,

  343. especially somebody who's been a faithful Christian over many years,

  344. and they call us and we go to see them and they speak to us,

  345. well, it's a situation, as you know, where you take more careful note than usual, probably,

  346. of what they have to say.

  347. Because when they know that they're on the verge of eternity,

  348. their words have added significance.

  349. And most of us, of course, have maybe come to,

  350. some of us at least come to that position where we've seen somebody

  351. just reaching the end of the course of life in this world,

  352. and the things that they say to us, what they believe,

  353. the kind of life they've lived, the advice that they give us,

  354. that is even more significant in these consequences, in these circumstances.

  355. And that's really what Paul is doing here.

  356. He's giving some very direct encouragement to Timothy,

  357. but it's in the light of his own departure,

  358. in the light of the fact that he's not got long to live.

  359. And as he stands on the threshold of eternity,

  360. he's really saying to Timothy,

  361. this is the only fail-safe foundation that you've got.

  362. This is what you need to come back to again and again

  363. when so much changes around you,

  364. when you see so many fears in yourself,

  365. when you find yourself questioning things,

  366. you have to come back.

  367. He's really saying, pretty much saying this,

  368. you have to come back to this,

  369. that he, this Savior, this Jesus,

  370. is able to look after things for you

  371. and to look after yourself especially.

  372. So he's saying, I know whom I have believed.

  373. And so because he's able to say that,

  374. he has that confidence,

  375. he's convinced about Jesus looking after

  376. all of his possessions

  377. and all of his confession

  378. and all of his person

  379. as he looks to the future.

  380. I want to look at two things

  381. that arise out of this.

  382. It's a wonderful passage.

  383. First of all, the issue of knowing Jesus.

  384. I know whom I have believed.

  385. I know whom I have believed.

  386. There is a confident note

  387. in the apostle and Paul's testimony here

  388. to Timothy.

  389. I know whom I have believed.

  390. The second thing is

  391. what we can call a safe investment

  392. when he comes to say that

  393. he is able to guard

  394. until that day

  395. what has been entrusted to me.

  396. And we're going to take that

  397. the way the AV puts it.

  398. I'll explain that in a minute.

  399. And when we come to it,

  400. he is able to guard

  401. what I have entrusted to him

  402. until that day.

  403. So here's first thing of all.

  404. First of all, knowing Jesus.

  405. Now, together here,

  406. you'll find knowing and believing.

  407. I am not ashamed

  408. for I know whom I have believed.

  409. So the knowing and the believing

  410. are locked together.

  411. They're not alternatives.

  412. They exist together.

  413. They belong together.

  414. They're in partnership

  415. in the experience of those

  416. who actually have

  417. a saving experience of Christ.

  418. It's a mistake

  419. to actually think somehow

  420. that you have to separate

  421. faith or believing

  422. from knowledge,

  423. from knowing.

  424. That the working of your mind

  425. is somehow detached

  426. from what you're doing

  427. when you believe.

  428. You'll find that idea

  429. that is sometimes thrown at us

  430. for believing in a Jesus

  431. that we don't physically see

  432. and that we believe things

  433. that the Bible tells us about him,

  434. that we believe

  435. what Christians have believed

  436. down through the centuries.

  437. And people will accuse us

  438. of really, you know,

  439. you're believing in something

  440. you cannot verify.

  441. You've never seen this person

  442. and yet you claim

  443. that you believe in him,

  444. that you trust in him,

  445. that you actually find him

  446. the basis of all your hopes.

  447. How can you do that?

  448. Well, because believing

  449. and knowing

  450. actually go together.

  451. It's not simply a matter

  452. of believing in Christ.

  453. It's also knowing Christ.

  454. And our believing,

  455. in any case,

  456. is not a leap in the dark.

  457. It's not as if you're just

  458. jumping off a spiritual

  459. or moral cliff

  460. and somehow hoping

  461. that you're going to land safely

  462. without really knowing

  463. what's ahead of you.

  464. That's not the kind of thing

  465. that faith is.

  466. Tonight,

  467. if you're a believer in Christ,

  468. you're not believing blindly.

  469. You're not believing in something

  470. really that you don't know much about.

  471. Because,

  472. as Romans 10,

    Romans 10:17

  473. verse 17 tells us,

  474. faith comes by hearing

  475. and hearing the word of Christ,

  476. the truth of God.

  477. Your faith,

  478. as you place your faith in Christ,

  479. is not a blind faith.

  480. It's not a launching out

  481. into the dark

  482. as if you don't have any access

  483. to what's true at all.

  484. You believe

  485. because God has revealed things

  486. to you to believe.

  487. You believe

  488. because you are convinced

  489. that this Bible

  490. is God's revelation to you

  491. and it's reliable

  492. as well as being authoritative.

  493. And so,

  494. when you come

  495. to believe in Christ,

  496. it's not a Jesus

  497. you know nothing about.

  498. It's not a Jesus

  499. that's somehow

  500. hiding in the shadows

  501. from you

  502. even though you can't

  503. see Him physically.

  504. He's not hiding

  505. in some sort of

  506. moral or spiritual shadow

  507. that you can hardly make out.

  508. He is actually revealed

  509. in all His beauty

  510. and His glory

  511. as far as we can

  512. actually follow it at least

  513. in these wonderful pictures

  514. of the gospel,

  515. these descriptions,

  516. these things that make up

  517. the truth of God.

  518. I know whom I have believed.

  519. You embrace Christ

  520. as He's offered

  521. in the gospel

  522. willingly

  523. by the grace of God.

  524. And always remember that

  525. when somebody comes to you

  526. and says,

  527. you know,

  528. I don't really think

  529. you've got a ground

  530. for believing

  531. what you believe

  532. or trusting in this Jesus

  533. when you can't tell me

  534. that you've actually seen Him

  535. at any point.

  536. No, but you actually say to Him,

  537. well, I believe certain things

  538. but I believe them

  539. not just because

  540. they're written

  541. in the pages of the Bible

  542. which I regard

  543. as the truth of God.

  544. I believe them

  545. because I know Him

  546. as well as what's written

  547. in the Bible

  548. and what's presented

  549. in the gospel.

  550. That's the second thing here

  551. in terms of knowing Jesus.

  552. There is a knowing

  553. along with a believer.

  554. You know what He's saying here?

  555. He's saying,

  556. I know

  557. whom I have believed.

  558. See, the apostle here

  559. is not saying

  560. I know what I have believed.

  561. And he's not saying

  562. I know what I believe

  563. about Jesus.

  564. He's not saying

  565. I know things about God

  566. and I believe these things

  567. to be true.

  568. He's saying

  569. I know

  570. whom I have believed.

  571. I know this person.

  572. I know this person

  573. of Jesus for myself.

  574. I don't just believe

  575. blindly

  576. and I don't just believe

  577. because I've got a Bible

  578. to believe.

  579. I know

  580. this person

  581. that I believe in

  582. and trust myself to.

  583. That's what He's saying.

  584. I know

  585. whom

  586. I have believed.

  587. You see,

  588. Paul

  589. is on personal

  590. terms

  591. with this Jesus.

  592. He's not

  593. believing

  594. in this person

  595. because he knows

  596. him as the founder

  597. of a religion

  598. that he respects

  599. such as you find

  600. in the major

  601. world religions

  602. of today

  603. founded by

  604. whether it's

  605. Muhammad

  606. or Buddha

  607. or whoever else

  608. it might have been

  609. that have founded

  610. or established

  611. these great religions.

  612. But they're gone.

  613. They're dead.

  614. They've passed

  615. from the scene

  616. of time.

  617. They're no longer

  618. living as

  619. Jesus is living.

  620. But here is Paul

  621. saying,

  622. I know

  623. whom I have

  624. believed.

  625. I know

  626. the one

  627. that I've

  628. placed my

  629. trust and

  630. confidence in.

  631. I know

  632. him

  633. because he

  634. is still

  635. living.

  636. Because he's

  637. risen from

  638. the dead.

  639. Which is why

  640. you find him

  641. dealing so much

  642. and so

  643. foundationally

  644. and so centrally

  645. with the

  646. resurrection

  647. of Christ

  648. from the dead.

  649. He has brought

  650. life

  651. and immortality

  652. to life

  653. through his

  654. resurrection.

  655. And Paul

  656. is saying,

  657. I know

  658. him.

  659. God has

  660. brought me

  661. into a

  662. living

  663. relationship

  664. with him.

  665. I'm not

  666. following a

  667. dead founder

  668. of a religion.

  669. Nor am I

  670. following the

  671. gospel as a

  672. mere system

  673. of belief.

  674. Such as you

  675. might find

  676. people following

  677. a creed or

  678. following a

  679. system of

  680. belief founded

  681. by whoever

  682. it is and

  683. continuing to

  684. actually follow

  685. that kind of

  686. system of

  687. belief or

  688. that creed

  689. or other.

  690. No, he says,

  691. I'm not

  692. following a

  693. system.

  694. I'm not

  695. following a

  696. religion.

  697. I'm following

  698. a person.

  699. I believe

  700. in this

  701. living person.

  702. I know

  703. this living

  704. person.

  705. And really

  706. that's how

  707. you've got to

  708. look at it

  709. yourself.

  710. What is it

  711. that distinguishes

  712. a person who

  713. is a Christian

  714. in a living

  715. sense?

  716. I'm not

  717. talking about

  718. a Christian

  719. in the sense

  720. of, you

  721. might say,

  722. the formal

  723. sense because

  724. you follow

  725. the Christian

  726. faith rather

  727. than Islam

  728. or Buddhism

  729. or whatever.

  730. Well, in a

  731. sense, that

  732. makes you a

  733. Christian, of

  734. course.

  735. If you're

  736. following the

  737. Christian faith,

  738. you're a

  739. Christian in

  740. that formal

  741. outward sense.

  742. What I'm

  743. talking about

  744. here is a

  745. Christian in

  746. the living

  747. sense of

  748. living in

  749. dependence upon

  750. Christ,

  751. living in a

  752. relationship that

  753. you know is

  754. live with

  755. this living

  756. person.

  757. Is that

  758. you?

  759. Is that

  760. you tonight?

  761. Are you a

  762. Christian through

  763. knowing Christ?

  764. You're surely

  765. not just saying,

  766. I'm a Christian

  767. because I'm

  768. different to a

  769. Muslim, because I

  770. follow the

  771. teachings of the

  772. Bible.

  773. Wonderful.

  774. That's so

  775. important.

  776. That's so

  777. crucial to

  778. you.

  779. true.

  780. But what makes

  781. you a Christian

  782. in the living

  783. sense is that

  784. you know

  785. Jesus, that

  786. you know Christ

  787. for yourself,

  788. that you know

  789. he lives, that

  790. you know he

  791. has conquered

  792. death, that

  793. you know he

  794. has forgiven

  795. your sins, that

  796. you know he's

  797. your daily

  798. companion, you

  799. know whom you

  800. have believed.

  801. need.

  802. And then he

  803. says, and I

  804. am convinced.

  805. You see how it

  806. grows out of

  807. this knowing

  808. of Christ.

  809. He's saying, I'm

  810. not ashamed, I

  811. will not be put

  812. to shame, I

  813. will not be

  814. shunned by

  815. God, I will

  816. not be rejected.

  817. All of that

  818. comes into what

  819. he's saying, I'm

  820. not ashamed.

  821. It's not just a

  822. feeling of being

  823. ashamed.

  824. In the New

  825. Testament, being

  826. ashamed is tied

  827. up with being

  828. rejected or being

  829. judged and found

  830. wanting.

  831. that's not

  832. going to happen

  833. to me, saying, I'm

  834. not ashamed and

  835. I will not be

  836. put to shame, for

  837. I know whom I

  838. have believed and

  839. I am convinced.

  840. You see, from his

  841. knowing of Jesus, he

  842. comes to be

  843. convinced about

  844. certain things,

  845. about him, and

  846. about the truth as

  847. it is in him.

  848. You might say

  849. he's got an

  850. assured

  851. believing from

  852. knowing Christ.

  853. Now, you're to

  854. ask Paul, well,

  855. Paul, how can you

  856. possibly be sure

  857. about these

  858. things?

  859. How can you be

  860. convinced about

  861. things?

  862. How can you

  863. actually say that

  864. this is, in

  865. fact, certain

  866. for you, and

  867. that this is not

  868. just the truth for

  869. you, but it is

  870. the truth?

  871. Well, he says, I

  872. know, I'm sure, I'm

  873. convinced because I

  874. know him, because I

  875. know himself.

  876. And when you

  877. know himself, it

  878. doesn't matter what

  879. somebody says to

  880. you and tries to

  881. convince you

  882. otherwise.

  883. It doesn't matter

  884. what doubts the

  885. devil or somebody

  886. else might try and

  887. instill in your

  888. mind.

  889. It doesn't matter

  890. how much somebody

  891. might try to shake

  892. your faith and

  893. bring you back to

  894. the kind of ideas

  895. you find in the

  896. world that tells

  897. you you're stupid,

  898. you're a fool to

  899. believe something

  900. you've never

  901. verified scientifically

  902. or whatever, I

  903. know whom I have

  904. believed.

  905. I know himself.

  906. That's why I'm

  907. convinced.

  908. I'm convinced

  909. about these things

  910. about him.

  911. See, Paul, you

  912. guys put it this

  913. way, Paul is not

  914. searching for the

  915. truth.

  916. This is one of the

  917. great fallacies of

  918. today, isn't it?

  919. When you find people

  920. who are established

  921. churchmen sometimes

  922. saying, you know,

  923. you can't actually

  924. possibly believe that

  925. Christ is the only

  926. way to God, that he

  927. is the way, the truth

  928. and the life, as

  929. John's gospel puts

  930. it.

  931. You've got to have an

  932. amalgamation and a

  933. conglomeration of all

  934. sorts of different

  935. religious ideas and

  936. it's as you weld these

  937. together, as you

  938. actually bring all of

  939. that together and as

  940. you walk along with

  941. people who believe in

  942. other systems of

  943. belief and as you

  944. join all that

  945. together and as you

  946. try and worship

  947. together and engage

  948. with each other, then

  949. you're involved in a

  950. search for the

  951. truth.

  952. You're involved in a

  953. progress onwards until

  954. eventually at some

  955. point or other you're

  956. going to come to the

  957. truth hopefully.

  958. Paul is saying,

  959. nonsense,

  960. rubbish.

  961. I know the truth

  962. because I know Jesus

  963. Christ.

  964. I know the truth

  965. because I know the

  966. Son of God who is

  967. himself the embodiment

  968. of the truth as he

  969. came into this world to

  970. reveal the truth of God

  971. to us.

  972. I know whom I have

  973. believed.

  974. Some people would say,

  975. you know, that's really

  976. being pretty arrogant,

  977. isn't it?

  978. I'm pretty arrogant

  979. towards other faiths

  980. or other systems of

  981. belief.

  982. If you're saying to me

  983. tonight that,

  984. and they might say to

  985. you, if you're saying to

  986. me tonight that Jesus

  987. is exclusively the

  988. Savior and the way to

  989. know God and to come

  990. into a living

  991. relationship with God

  992. and to have the

  993. righteousness that God

  994. requires of us and

  995. live the kind of life

  996. that God is pleased

  997. with, how can you say

  998. to me that only Jesus

  999. can do that for you

  1000. or only through Jesus

  1001. can you come into

  1002. that relationship with

  1003. God?

1004. Well, I can say that

  1005. because I know Jesus

1006. and I know this is what

  1007. Jesus himself believed

  1008. and said.

1009. Am I going to actually

  1010. trust the word of

  1011. someone whom I know

  1012. to be my Savior?

1013. Or am I going to

  1014. simply say, well,

1015. you know, we've got to

1016. add to that, we've got

1017. to change that in the

1018. world in which we live.

1019. We've got to add to that

  1020. other kinds of ideas

  1021. and especially as the

  1022. world has progressed

  1023. technologically in terms

  1024. of finding things out

  1025. and affirmations from

  1026. science as to how

  1027. things work and all

  1028. the rest of it.

  1029. It doesn't matter.

  1030. You don't have to

  1031. understand many of

  1032. these scientific

  1033. discoveries or how

  1034. the analysis is made

1035. of life as you know

  1036. it in this world.

1037. All you need is to

  1038. know him.

  1039. I know whom I have

  1040. believed.

  1041. Paul's not searching

  1042. for the truth.

  1043. He doesn't need to.

1044. He knows that he's got

  1045. that in Christ.

1046. He knows that what he

1047. has in Christ is God's

  1048. supreme revelation of

  1049. himself.

1050. He's the light of the

  1051. world.

1052. He is himself the way,

1053. the truth, and the life.

  1054. He is the resurrection

  1055. and the life.

1056. He's all of the things

  1057. he claimed to be.

  1058. And although Paul

  1059. himself, of course,

  1060. was adamant at one

  1061. time that the last

1062. thing in the world he

1063. wanted was to give his

  1064. life over to this

  1065. Jesus, he regarded him

  1066. as a fraud, regarded

1067. him as somebody who was

  1068. being peddled by his

  1069. followers as somehow or

  1070. other a representation of

1071. God on earth until he

1072. was making his way as an

  1073. enemy of Christ, to

  1074. Damascus with further

1075. intentions in his mind to

  1076. cast more of the

  1077. followers of Jesus into

  1078. prison and so on.

1079. And then he met with this

  1080. person.

1081. He was arrested by this

  1082. Christ himself who turned

1083. his life around and put

  1084. everything upside down for

1085. him, or rather the right

  1086. way up for him.

  1087. And now he's saying, I

  1088. know whom I have

  1089. believed.

1090. And all the things that I

1091. once held on to as so

  1092. essential for earning the

1093. favor of God, of coming to

1094. gain God's approval, as he

  1095. says in Philippians chapter

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  1096. 3, I now count these as

  1097. worthless rubbish.

1098. He's not being disparaging of

1099. what he once believed in a

1100. sense, but he is rejecting it

1101. as the basis of his

  1102. acceptance with God.

1103. I count him, he says, as

1104. worthless so that I might

1105. gain Christ and be found in

1106. him and have the righteousness

1107. as of God by him.

  1108. I know whom I have

  1109. believed.

1110. You know, Paul would really

1111. look out over those folks who

1112. claim that Christ is not

1113. enough, that you've got to add

1114. to Jesus himself or to the

1115. gospel where Jesus is set

  1116. forth as the Savior

  1117. exclusively.

1118. People, as we said, will say

1119. to you, that's really not

  1120. enough.

1121. You've got to move ahead

  1122. nowadays.

  1123. You've got to progress.

1124. What will Paul say to that?

1125. Paul said to that, you've got

  1126. a big problem.

  1127. You've got a massive problem.

1128. And the problem is you don't

  1129. know Jesus.

1130. And you don't know Jesus as God's

  1131. exclusive, wonderful, sufficient

  1132. Savior of sinners.

1133. So here's for me the question

  1134. tonight.

  1135. Do I know Jesus?

1136. Have I been standing in pulpits

1137. for well over 30 years and still

1138. don't know him for myself?

  1139. I hope not.

  1140. I trust not.

  1141. I believe not.

  1142. Do you know him?

1143. Do you know him as your living

  1144. companion?

1145. Are you in a daily conversation

  1146. with him?

1147. Do you know him in such a way as

1148. would say, you know, if everything

1149. else was taken out of my life, and

  1150. that's a very difficult thing to

1151. say, I would still have Jesus and

1152. my life would be secure.

1153. I know whom I have believed, says

  1154. the apostle.

1155. And for you and for me, it's not

1156. just a matter of believing in

  1157. Christ, believing God's word,

1158. believing what it says there about

  1159. him.

1160. Believing means a knowing of him,

1161. a coming to live in a living

1162. relationship with him, where you

1163. have, as Paul himself had,

  1164. personal terms with Christ

  1165. every day.

  1166. I know whom I have believed.

1167. But then he says, and I am

1168. convinced, rising out of that

1169. relationship that he has with

1170. Christ, this knowledge that he has

  1171. of Christ, he's saying I am

1172. convinced that he is able to guard

1173. until that day what has been

  1174. entrusted to me.

  1175. Now, I've said that personally I

1176. prefer the old AV rendering of it

  1177. there.

  1178. It's perfectly possible

1179. grammatically to render it either

  1180. way, either like this.

1181. He's able to guard what has been

1182. entrusted to me, by which the

1183. translators here have been really,

1184. their view is that he's talking

1185. about the gospel, the message of

  1186. Christ.

1187. Whereas the AV took it in the other

1188. way that, again, is possible

  1189. grammatically.

1190. I am convinced, he says, that he

1191. is able to guard what I have

  1192. entrusted to him.

1193. And you see it's, you find later

1194. on there the verse 14, by the Holy

1195. Spirit who dwells within us, he's

1196. saying to Timothy, guard the good

  1197. deposit entrusted to you.

1198. And I think it's from that that this

1199. translation itself has come to

1200. translate it this way, to guard what

1201. has been entrusted to me.

1202. Now, do you see, verse 14 there is

1203. really saying the Holy Spirit who

1204. dwells in us, you, Timothy, guard the

1205. good deposit entrusted to you.

1206. But what he's saying here in verse

1207. 12 is it's something that he has

1208. entrusted to Christ, something that

1209. Christ is going to look after.

  1210. It's not Timothy who's looking after

  1211. it here, it's Christ who's looking

1212. after what he says here in verse 12.

1213. It's literally in the Greek text of

1214. all it says is he's able to guard the

  1215. deposit.

  1216. My deposit.

1217. And what is this deposit?

1218. Well, I believe it's better taking it

1219. as Paul speaking about entrusting

1220. himself, his life, his apostleship,

  1221. his present, his future.

1222. After all, he's talking here about

  1223. death being imminent.

1224. He's not far away from the end of his

  1225. course in this life.

1226. And he's encouraging Timothy to

1227. continue to trust in this God and to

1228. continue to entrust himself to Jesus

1229. because he says, I know whom I have

1230. believed and I am convinced that he

1231. is able to guard, to keep until that

1232. day what I have entrusted to him, what I

1233. have given over to him to be secure in

  1234. him.

1235. In other words, it's Paul's own, if you

1236. take it that way, he means his own life.

  1237. He means his person.

  1238. That's what he's deposited in Christ's

  1239. hands.

1240. And so that's really, in a sense, what

1241. fits in with many references in the

1242. Bible to God being a refuge.

1243. And 1 Peter, for example, chapter 4, which

1244. is a letter really, as you know, that's

1245. written largely to suffering Christians,

  1246. persecuted Christians.

1247. In chapter 4, the last verse there, he

1248. says, therefore, let those who suffer

1249. according to God's will entrust their

1250. souls to a faithful creator while

  1251. doing good.

1252. He's talking about entrusting themselves

  1253. to this living Savior.

1254. And that's how we're taking these words

1255. of Paul to Timothy as well.

  1256. I am convinced, I am persuaded, I am

1257. fully convinced that he is able to guard,

1258. to look after everything that I've placed

1259. in his hand, including myself, until

  1260. that day.

1261. So really, your faith, your living

1262. relationship with Jesus is not just, of

1263. course, a formal assent to his truth.

1264. It is, as we said, knowing Jesus in a

  1265. personal relationship.

1266. But it's also in the actings of your

  1267. faith.

1268. And it's not just once and for all.

1269. It's really on an everyday, ongoing

  1270. basis.

1271. It's entrusting yourself to Jesus.

1272. Isn't that how you begin every day?

1273. That you actually pray, Lord, please

1274. look after my life again.

1275. I'm placing myself in your hands.

1276. And as I place myself in your hands,

1277. Lord, whatever happens on this day,

  1278. look after me.

  1279. Guard me.

  1280. Keep me.

  1281. Be my guard.

  1282. My guardian.

1283. Be the one who looks after me as I

  1284. entrust myself to you.

  1285. Entrustman to a person.

1286. And there's the question again for

  1287. yourself and for myself.

1288. Is that how you find your own life?

  1289. You know the gospel.

  1290. You know the Bible.

1291. You know the message of the gospel.

1292. You know other Christians in this place

  1293. tonight and elsewhere.

1294. But here is the question following on

1295. from do you know him yourself,

  1296. for yourself?

1297. Have you entrusted your life to him?

1298. Have you given over your life

1299. to this Jesus to be your Lord

1300. as well as your Savior?

1301. Have you deposited, if you like,

1302. to use the words of the apostle here,

  1303. this deposit, my deposit?

1304. I have entrusted my deposit to him.

1305. Have you deposited your own life

1306. into the hands of Jesus?

  1307. There are few questions

1308. as important as that in your life.

  1309. This is why, friends,

1310. God has given us the gospel.

1311. Not so that we would have

  1312. a mere intellectual knowledge

  1313. of who Jesus is

1314. and what Jesus has done.

  1315. Wonderful though that is.

  1316. It's so that

  1317. we will be persuaded

1318. that we need this Jesus

1319. as our own personal Savior.

1320. And that knowing that we need this Jesus

1321. by the grace of God,

1322. by the power of his Spirit,

1323. we will deposit our lives

  1324. into his hand.

1325. We will entrust ourselves to him

  1326. to look after us

1327. all the way through life

  1328. and into eternity itself.

1329. And let me say to the young folks

  1330. here tonight,

1331. you don't think of yourself

1332. as too young to do this.

  1333. I don't know if you've still

  1334. got a bank account.

1335. Some of you probably have.

  1336. But if you have,

1337. you know what you do

1338. when you have a savings account.

1339. You deposit some money in that.

1340. And you expect the bank

1341. to look after it for you

1342. and not lose your money.

1343. Then you can withdraw it

  1344. whenever you want.

  1345. You can go

1346. and take some money out of it.

1347. But you've left it in the bank.

  1348. You've put it there.

  1349. You've deposited it there

  1350. for safekeeping.

1351. That's what Paul is saying

  1352. about himself.

  1353. He has put himself

1354. in the hands of Jesus

  1355. for safekeeping.

1356. And what he's saying is

  1357. when you do that,

  1358. your life is safe.

  1359. You can't guarantee

1360. whether you're young or old

  1361. in this life.

  1362. You can't guarantee

1363. that everything will turn out well

1364. just by hoping for the best.

  1365. Paul is saying here

1366. he's able to guard this deposit

  1367. until that day.

1368. What I have entrusted to him,

1369. he's going to look after it

  1370. until that day.

1371. And by that he means

1372. the day of Christ's return.

  1373. The day of judgment.

  1374. The day when Jesus

1375. comes back to this world.

  1376. What a momentous day

  1377. that's going to be.

  1378. We must all,

1379. as Paul says to the Corinthians

  1380. in his second epistle,

  1381. we must all appear

  1382. before the judgment seat

  1383. of Christ

1384. that we may all receive

1385. the things done in this body

  1386. whether good or evil.

1387. Paul doesn't need to be afraid

1388. that somehow or other things

1389. are not going to turn out well

1390. for him on that day

  1391. because he has entrusted

  1392. his life to Jesus,

  1393. because Jesus is looking

  1394. after it for him,

  1395. because he's put himself

1396. in the hands of Christ,

  1397. because that's where

1398. the deposit of his life is.

  1399. He is safe.

  1400. Nothing's going to actually

  1401. change that.

1402. The only way that can change

  1403. is somehow or other

  1404. God the Father

  1405. finds something wrong

  1406. with Jesus.

1407. And that's never going to happen.

  1408. And there's your

  1409. wonderful assurance tonight

  1410. that however weak

  1411. you might say

  1412. your own faith is

  1413. and however many times

  1414. you fail the Lord,

  1415. however many times

1416. you know that you've not

1417. been as you should be,

  1418. you've not done

1419. what you should have done,

  1420. or you've done things

  1421. you shouldn't have done,

  1422. you're conscious

1423. that you sin against God

  1424. every day,

1425. that you need his forgiveness,

1426. all of that is there.

  1427. But if you've entrusted

  1428. your life to Christ,

  1429. he's looking after

  1430. everything for you.

  1431. Your life is secure.

  1432. you've made your deposit.

  1433. You've deposited yourself

  1434. into his hands.

  1435. Now is that

  1436. your outlook tonight?

1437. Is that how your life

  1438. is situated?

  1439. Is that what's

  1440. underneath your present

  1441. and your future?

  1442. It's Jesus himself.

  1443. F.B. Meyer,

1444. who was a Baptist minister

  1445. in England

  1446. from the mid-1800s,

  1447. he died, I think,

  1448. in 1929.

  1449. But in his writings,

  1450. he gives the following

  1451. account of two Germans

  1452. who wanted to climb

  1453. the Matterhorn,

  1454. and you know

  1455. the Matterhorn mountain

  1456. itself,

1457. one of the big mountains

  1458. in Europe,

  1459. a very steep mountain,

1460. very icy in parts of it.

  1461. Well,

  1462. there were two Germans

  1463. who wanted to climb

  1464. the Matterhorn,

  1465. so they hired

  1466. three guides,

  1467. and the three guides

  1468. would take them,

  1469. they hoped,

  1470. safely up the Matterhorn

1471. as far as they could

  1472. at least.

  1473. And very soon,

  1474. they reached the steepest

  1475. and the most slippery

  1476. part of that mountain,

  1477. and they had roped

  1478. themselves together

  1479. in this order.

  1480. First of all,

  1481. a guide went ahead,

  1482. then a traveler,

  1483. then a guide,

  1484. then a traveler,

1485. and then a third guide

  1486. at the end,

  1487. at the rear.

1488. As they went up the mountain,

1489. the one bringing up the rear,

  1490. there the last man,

  1491. actually lost his footing

  1492. and slipped.

1493. But he was able to hang on

  1494. because the others had

1495. little toe holes in the ice

1496. that they were climbing up

  1497. the ice wall.

1498. They had toe holes in the ice,

1499. so they were able to

  1500. hold tight

1501. the weight of this man

1502. until he regained his footing.

1503. But then there came a moment

1504. when those ahead of that man

  1505. also lost their footing.

  1506. And they pulled down

  1507. everyone ahead of them

  1508. except the guide

  1509. who was going

  1510. at the head

  1511. of the procession,

  1512. of the climb.

  1513. And he stood firm

  1514. because he had driven

  1515. his spike

  1516. deep into the ice.

1517. And so all of those

1518. who were coming after him

  1519. were depending on that

  1520. spike holding,

  1521. which it did.

1522. And they were able again

  1523. to regain their footing

  1524. because this one guide,

1525. the guide at the front,

  1526. had the spike deep

  1527. in the ice

1528. and was able to hold

  1529. things steady

  1530. until they recovered.

  1531. And this is what

  1532. F.B. Meyer said,

1533. I am like one of those men

  1534. who slipped.

  1535. But thank God

  1536. I am bound

  1537. in a living partnership

  1538. to Christ.

  1539. And because

  1540. he stands,

  1541. I will never

  1542. perish.

  1543. May God bless

  1544. his word to us.

  1545. Let's

  1546. sing to his praise

  1547. in Psalm 73.

  1548. Psalm 73,

  1549. page 316,

  1550. verses 23 to 26.

  1551. Nevertheless,

  1552. continually,

  1553. O Lord,

  1554. I am with thee.

  1555. Thou dost me hold

  1556. by my right hand

  1557. and still

  1558. upholdest me.

  1559. Thou with thy counsel

  1560. while I live

  1561. will me conduct

  1562. and guide

  1563. and to thy glory

  1564. afterward

  1565. receive me

  1566. to abide.

  1567. So 23 to 26

  1568. of Psalm 73.

  1569. Psalm 73.

  1570. Psalm 73.

  1571. Thou dost me hold

  1572. by my right hand

  1573. and still upholdest me.

  1574. Thou with thy counsel

  1575. while I live

  1576. will be conduct

  1577. and guide

  1578. and to thy glory

  1579. afterward

  1580. and to thy glory

  1581. afterward

  1582. receive me

  1583. whom I desire

  1584. to abide.

  1585. Thou have

  1586. have

  1587. died

  1588. in the heaven's

  1589. night

  1590. but thee,

  1591. O Lord,

  1592. our Lord,

  1593. and in the air

  1594. whom I desire

  1595. whom I desire

  1596. whom I desire

  1597. and in the air

  1598. whom I desire

  1599. whom I desire

  1600. besides thee

  1601. there is none.

  1602. my flesh

  1603. and heart

  1604. doth

  1605. faint

  1606. and fail

  1607. but

  1608. what

  1609. doth

  1610. fail

  1611. me

  1612. never

  1613. for

  1614. God

  1615. for

  1616. love

  1617. my heart

  1618. God

  1619. is

  1620. the

  1621. strength

  1622. and

  1623. love

  1624. my heart

  1625. God

  1626. is

  1627. the

  1628. strength

  1629. and

  1630. portion

  1631. for

  1632. heaven.

  1633. forever

1634. I'll go to the main door after the benediction.

  1635. the benediction.

1636. Lord, our gracious God, we pray that you would bless your word to us once again.

1637. We ask also that you would bless to us the preparation made for us for our bodily needs of the fellowship.

1638. We thank you for that food prepared.

1639. We pray that you would bless Jackie as he gives an account of his own spiritual experience and his testimony to your grace in his life.

1640. And we ask that you would uphold him and bless Scott too as he leads the meeting.

1641. And now may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you now and evermore. Amen.

  1642. Thank you.
