  1. We'll begin our worship by singing to God's praise in Psalm 95 in the Scottish Psalter.

  2. We're going to sing from verse 6 down to verse 11.

  3. Psalm 95 in the Scottish Psalter at verse 6.

  4. O come and let us worship him, let us bow down with all,

  5. and on our knees before the Lord our Maker let us fall.

  6. For he's our God, the people we of his own pasture are,

  7. and of his hand the sheep today, if ye his voice will hear.

  8. And so on. We'll sing from verse 6 down to verse 11, and the tune is Gainsborough.

  9. O come and let us worship him,

  10. Let us plunder with all,

  11. And on our knees before the Lord,

  12. Our Maker let us fall.

  13. For he's our God, the people we of his own pasture are,

  14. And of his hand the sheep today,

  15. And he his voice will hear.

  16. Then harden all due hearts,

  17. Our sin and provocation,

  18. As in the rest of the day of the temptation,

  19. As in the rest of the day of the temptation,

  20. When me your Father's strength and crew,

  21. How did my work in sin?

  22. In mind, the face of forty years,

  23. This grace hath beared me.

  24. I send this people less in high.

  25. My ways they do not know.

  26. To whom I slip in wrath, not to my rest they should not go.

  27. Let's come to God in prayer.

  28. Let us pray.

  29. Amen.

  30. Our Father in heaven as we continue to worship your name and praise you as our Lord and our maker.

  31. We thank you that again we can come in praise and worship for that is your call to us as your people.

  32. That is the call that we have sung from this psalm.

  33. We as a people are to come and worship you, to bow down before you and on our knees before you fall.

  34. For you are our maker and our Lord.

  35. And we thank you, Lord, that the way is opened up for us.

  36. That we have such a great privilege to be able to worship you in peace and security.

  37. But help us, Lord, never to take these things for granted.

  38. Help us, even this day, as we have been around your word and around the sacrament of the Lord's Supper.

  39. Never just to think that this is always going to be what our Lord is.

  40. For we know, Lord, that there is much blessing in your word for your people.

  41. We are so encouraged through your word that you are a God who has loved us and remembered us and given us your own son as the way to salvation.

  42. But your word stands through too.

  43. There is a warning in it as well.

  44. Even the warning that we have sung from these words before us.

  45. That we as a people, we are not to harden our hearts as we hear your word.

  46. There was a warning from the psalmist to the people then of their forefathers who had indeed hardened their hearts.

  47. And we live in a day and an age when the same is true of so many around us and even so many of ourselves.

  48. When our hearts can become hardened.

  49. When we do not listen to what your word is saying.

  50. When we heed and listen to the wisdom of this world.

  51. And to all the things that will lead us astray and lead us away from you.

  52. And so we pray anew this night, Lord.

  53. That you will speak to us.

  54. But that we will have ears to hear.

  55. And that your spirit will work in our midst.

  56. That your spirit will minister to our hearts.

  57. That you will, O Lord, melt our hearts.

  58. By your grace.

  59. By your mercy.

  60. By your love.

  61. For we know we cannot do it ourselves.

  62. Because only you can.

  63. But we thank you that there is so many promises in your word that we can hold on to.

  64. That we can remember and even pray over as we come to you as the only way to salvation.

  65. We thank you that there is a promise that for all who come you will never cast them away.

  66. That there is a promise that all who come to you, you will give them rest.

  67. There is a promise that all who come to you, you will hold on to.

  68. That you will never forsake them or leave them.

  69. And so we pray, Lord, for all your promises.

  70. That they will be ours through Christ Jesus.

  71. And that we may know them more and more precious in our hearts and in our experiences day by day.

  72. The more we go on, the more we learn through the joys of this world.

  73. But also through the sorrows that it brings.

  74. We experience, O Lord, so often the highs and the lows.

  75. We so often feel alone and helpless in these times.

  76. And so we thank you, Lord, for your promise to draw near.

  77. And the promise and encouragement that we have in your word.

  78. That we are indeed to be a people who encourage one another.

  79. And pray for one another.

  80. Remembering one another in so many different ways.

  81. So help us, Lord, that we will be a praying people.

  82. An encouraged people.

  83. A people with a sense of expectation of what you are doing in us and around us.

  84. And in the midst of all that goes on.

  85. That we would see that you are the God who does indeed do all things well.

  86. Help us to understand these truths, Lord, when they are difficult for us.

  87. And so we thank you that you have not left us.

  88. That you have spoken and are speaking to us.

  89. And that you are reminding us, Lord, of the wonderful gift of your grace.

  90. Help us to long for it more and more.

  91. And to experience it through that faith that comes from your grace towards us.

  92. That faith in Jesus Christ, your Son.

  93. We thank you, Lord, for the encouragements your people receive on a day-to-day basis.

  94. We thank you that even as we pray in our own quietness of our homes.

  95. And in the quietness of our own hearts.

  96. That so often we see prayers answered.

  97. And we thank you, Lord, that even before us this day, there are prayers answered now and from maybe even many generations past.

  98. Prayers offered up by your people maybe long ago.

  99. Prayers for children in young years who are now into old age.

  100. But who have come and tasted of the goodness of God.

  101. We know, Lord, your word teaches us to be patient.

  102. And we continue to pray with that sense of urgency.

  103. That sense of patience to wait upon you.

  104. Praying for those who are still strangers to you.

  105. Praying for those who are even in the darkness of this world tonight.

  106. Praying for those who are struggling in so many different ways.

  107. Those known to us and even those who we do not know.

  108. Those who in your plan and purpose.

  109. Maybe we are yet to meet.

  110. Yet to have opportunity to share a word in season with.

  111. But we thank you that in your kingdom.

  112. And in your plan and purpose.

  113. Everything is foreordained.

  114. And so help us to commit ourselves into your hands.

  115. And to go forward even from this day.

  116. In the knowledge of all that is uncertain for us.

  117. Is known unto you.

  118. And we pray, Lord, your will be done in all things.

  119. We thank you for our Lord and Saviour.

  120. The one who we have remembered this day.

  121. The one who has done all for us.

  122. We pray, Lord, and thank you for the many prayers he offered up.

  123. The prayers we read in scripture.

  124. The prayer in Gethsemane.

  125. Even as he looked ahead to the cross.

  126. And saying, nevertheless, not my will, but yours be done.

  127. We thank you for that great sacrifice.

  128. We thank you that he gave his life.

  129. We thank you anew this evening.

  130. That he is risen.

  131. That he has overcome.

  132. The power of sin.

  133. The power of death.

  134. That it could not keep hold of him.

  135. But we thank you that he is risen.

  136. And has appeared to many.

  137. And that he has now ascended.

  138. To the right hand.

  139. And we await the day of his return.

  140. In a world that groans.

  141. In a world that has many pains.

  142. We do thank you that we look forward to a day.

  143. When he will come again.

  144. And we pray, Lord, that even those thoughts of the Lord's return.

  145. Will stir us up in our mission for God in this world.

  146. That it will stir us up as a church.

  147. To serve you aright.

  148. To long to see many coming to salvation.

  149. To long to see many throughout the world.

  150. Turning to you.

  151. Repenting of their sins.

  152. And hearing the great gospel message.

  153. We thank you for every way it goes out.

  154. We thank you for every means that there is.

  155. To share the gospel in this day and this age.

  156. We thank you that even as we gather here.

  157. This is a service.

  158. And a worship that can be heard.

  159. To all the ends of the earth.

  160. How our world has changed in so many ways.

  161. That a voice can be heard in the far corners of the world.

  162. Even immediately.

  163. But we thank you above all that your voice is heard.

  164. That you are a God who knows every person throughout the lands.

  165. That you are a God who speaks and ministers to people far and wide.

  166. We thank you that your gospel is not contained in any way, shape or form.

  167. We do pray Lord for the ongoing ministry of your word.

  168. Whether it's the preaching of your word.

  169. The translating of your word into the many languages of this world.

  170. The ministry of your people in so many different ways.

  171. To all ends of the earth.

  172. Teaching.

  173. Shepherding.

  174. Shepherding.

  175. Guiding.

  176. Helping.

  177. Nourishing.

  178. Caring.

  179. And for so many different people.

  180. In so many different places.

  181. We ask and plead though Lord your mercy upon us.

  182. That our world would see the great emptiness of a desire for self in this world.

  183. A selfish heart that longs for the things of this world in a greedy way.

  184. We see so much around us that makes us troubled in our hearts and our souls.

  185. And we know too Lord that you grieve over the lust of this world.

  186. And so we pray Lord that you will come in a day of your power.

  187. Remember us as a people Lord.

  188. Look down upon us and remember those who we so love and care for in our own homes.

  189. And our families and our communities near and far.

  190. Remember us Lord and hear our prayers as we ask all things.

  191. Acknowledging our sin anew.

  192. But thankful for the forgiveness that is ours as we repent and confess.

  193. And approach that great throne of your son Christ Jesus.

  194. Our great high priest.

  195. We thank you for all done for us.

  196. And we pray Lord encourage us.

  197. Strengthen us on the way.

  198. Even into the rest of the week that lies ahead before us.

  199. Guard us oh Lord and keep us.

  200. And help us to have that great expectation of you.

  201. The one who is able to do abundantly more than we ask or imagine.

  202. As we commit ourselves into your hands now and always.

  203. Go before us.

  204. Cleanse us anew.

  205. In all we ask.

  206. We ask in Jesus name for his sake.

  207. Amen.

  208. Amen.

  209. Let's again sing to God's praise.

  210. This time I'm singing in Psalm 5 in the Scottish Psalter.

  211. It's on page 203.

  212. Psalm 5 on page 203.

  213. We're going to sing from verse 1 to verse 7.

  214. Give ear unto my words.

  215. O Lord my meditation way.

  216. Hear my loud cry.

  217. My King my God.

  218. For I to thee will pray.

  219. Lord thou shalt early hear my voice.

  220. I early will direct.

  221. My prayer to thee and looking up.

  222. An answer will expect.

  223. We'll sing from verse 1 to verse 7.

  224. To God's praise on the tune of Spor.

  225. Give ear unto my words.

  226. O Lord.

  227. My meditation way.

  228. Hear my loud cry.

  229. My King my God.

  230. For I to thee will pray.

  231. Lord thou shalt early hear my voice.

  232. I early will dry head.

  233. My prayer to thee and looking up.

  234. An answer will expect.

  235. For thou art not.

  236. God thou art not.

  237. God thou art not.

  238. In wickedness delight.

  239. Neither shall evil dwell with thee.

  240. Nor will thou art not.

  241. Nor will thou stand in thy sight.

  242. All that will do.

  243. All that will do.

  244. Or shine thy heart.

  245. God's love that fire.

  246. Lord thou art not.

  247. O Valentine shall see.

  248. M Gesetzent may andingsbee.

  249. Unbeceived woman, a poetess by thee.

  250. But I into thy house will come, and thine abundant grace.

  251. And I will worship in thy fear, to hold my holy grace.

  252. Well, can we turn together to read God's word in the New Testament and in the book of Acts?

  253. The book of Acts, chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  254. Let me take up our reading at verse 14.

  255. Acts chapter 2, reading at verse 14.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  256. But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them.

  257. Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give ear to my words.

  258. For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day.

  259. But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel.

  260. And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my spirit on all flesh.

  261. And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy.

  262. And your young men shall see visions.

  263. And your old men shall dream dreams.

  264. Even on my male servants and female servants.

  265. To those days I will pour out my spirit.

  266. And they shall prophesy.

  267. And I will show wonders in the heavens above.

  268. And signs on the earth below.

  269. Blood and fire and vapor of smoke.

  270. The sun shall be turned to darkness.

  271. And the moon to blood.

  272. Before the day of the Lord comes.

  273. The great and magnificent day.

  274. And shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

  275. Men of Israel, hear these words.

  276. Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs.

  277. That God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know.

  278. This Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God.

  279. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death.

  280. Because it was not possible for him to be held by it.

  281. For David says concerning him,

  282. I saw the Lord always before me.

  283. For he is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken.

  284. Therefore my heart was glad.

  285. And my tongue rejoiced.

  286. My flesh also will dwell in hope.

  287. For you will not abandon my soul to haze.

  288. Or let your holy ones see corruption.

  289. You have made known to me the paths of life.

  290. You will make me full of gladness with your presence.

  291. Brothers, I say to you with confidence about the patriarch David.

  292. That he both died and was buried.

  293. And his tomb is with us to this day.

  294. Being therefore a prophet.

  295. And knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would not set one of his descendants on his throne.

  296. He foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ.

  297. That he was not abandoned to haze.

  298. Nor did his flesh see corruption.

  299. This Jesus God raised up.

  300. And of that we all are witnesses.

  301. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God.

  302. And having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit.

  303. He has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.

  304. For David did not ascend into the heavens.

  305. But he himself says.

  306. The Lord said to my Lord.

  307. Sit at my right hand.

  308. Until I make your enemies your footstool.

  309. Let all of the house of Israel therefore know for certain.

  310. That God has made him both Lord and Christ.

  311. This Jesus whom you crucified.

  312. Now when they heard this.

  313. They were cut to the heart.

  314. And said to Peter and to the rest of the apostles.

  315. Brothers what shall we do?

  316. And Peter said to them.

  317. Repent.

  318. And be baptized.

  319. Every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ.

  320. For the forgiveness of your sins.

  321. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  322. For the promise is for you.

  323. And for your children.

  324. And for all who are far off.

  325. Everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.

  326. And with many other words.

  327. He bore witness.

  328. And continued to exhort them.

  329. Saying.

  330. Save yourselves from this crooked generation.

  331. So those who received his word.

  332. Were baptized.

  333. They were added that day.

  334. About three thousand souls.

  335. And so on.

  336. And may God bless.

  337. That reading from his word.

  338. We'll again sing to God's praise.

  339. This time in Psalm 116.

  340. In the Scottish Psalter.

  341. Page 395 of the Psalm.

  342. Book Psalm 116.

  343. At the beginning of the Psalm.

  344. Singing down to verse 8.

  345. I love the Lord.

  346. Because my voice and prayers heeded here.

  347. I while I live will call on him.

  348. Who bowed to me his ear.

  349. Of death the cords and sorrows did.

  350. About me compass round.

  351. Pains of hell took hold on me.

  352. I grief and trouble found.

  353. Upon the name of God the Lord.

  354. Then did I call and say.

  355. Deliver thou my soul O Lord.

  356. I do thee humbly pray.

  357. We'll sing from verse 1.

  358. To verse 8.

  359. And the tune is Cunningham.

  360. I love the Lord.

  361. I love the Lord.

  362. Because my voice and prayers he did here.

  363. I beim on there.

  364. Of death the courts and sorrows did,

  365. How hard we come was run,

  366. The grace of hell to hold on me,

  367. I keep my trouble firm.

  368. Upon the name of God the Lord,

  369. When did I call and say,

  370. Give ever love my soul, O Lord,

  371. I do Thee humbly pray.

  372. God merciful and righteous,

  373. O Lord, O Lord,

  374. God saves the meek,

  375. I was brought home,

  376. He did me help, O Lord.

  377. O Lord, my soul, do thou return,

  378. And to thy quiet rest,

  379. For largely know the Lord to Thee,

  380. Its bounty hath expressed.

  381. For my distress is so from death,

  382. Delivered was by Thee,

  383. Thou missed my warning,

  384. I strong tears,

  385. My feet of falling free.

  386. Well, we can turn back for our time this evening

  387. to the passage we read in Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  388. Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  389. And our main focus is going to be in verse 37

  390. to the end of verse 41.

  391. But as you see,

  392. this section is one long section

  393. that we read together,

  394. the sermon of Peter

  395. on the time of Pentecost,

  396. where there were people around

  397. who had seen the wonders

  398. of the coming of the Holy Spirit,

  399. the power seen in different ways

  400. among the people,

  401. and there were those around

  402. who were accusing them

  403. of being drunk

  404. and of being out of their minds

  405. and all kinds of accusations

  406. being made against them.

  407. It was a hostile crowd

  408. that Peter was preaching to.

  409. But what you see

  410. as he preaches God's word,

  411. as you see as he takes texts

  412. from the Old Testament,

  413. you have Joel in the book of Psalms

  414. being quoted here, read here,

  415. and he's preaching the word to them

  416. and it has a powerful impact.

  417. And that's what we see in verse 37

  418. where it says,

  419. Now when they heard this,

  420. they were cut to the heart

  421. and said to Peter

  422. and to the rest of the apostles,

  423. Brothers,

  424. what shall we do?

  425. And as we come away

  426. from a communion weekend,

  427. as we come away from again

  428. hearing God's word preached

  429. whether it was last evening

  430. or today,

  431. during the day,

  432. this morning or tonight,

  433. as we come away from this weekend,

  434. what kind of expectations

  435. do we have coming away from it?

  436. How are we coming away

  437. from hearing the word of God

  438. or seeing the sacrament

  439. of the Lord's Supper,

  440. either having taken it

  441. or watched on?

  442. What are our thoughts of God?

  443. Are we as a people

  444. hardening our hearts?

  445. Are we just going to go on

  446. into the week

  447. and carry on

  448. just like any other week,

  449. forgetting what we've heard?

  450. Or is it going to linger with us?

  451. Is it going to pierce

  452. into our own hearts?

  453. Is it going to make us

  454. ask questions of ourselves

  455. and questions of God?

  456. We are reminded constantly

  457. through his word

  458. that God is a God

  459. who is sovereign,

  460. a God who is reigning on high

  461. as we were thinking of last night.

  462. He is a God who is working.

  463. He is a God whose spirit

  464. moves among us at all times.

  465. He is a God we've been encouraged

  466. in seeing the work

  467. he is doing in our own midst here

  468. in calling a people

  469. to himself to profess faith.

  470. He is a God

  471. who promises he will bless.

  472. And as we look to him

  473. and as we trust in him,

  474. that he will bless his people.

  475. There are so many promises

  476. that we can take from his word.

  477. But we have to be faithful to him.

  478. And here Peter is addressing a people

  479. who in many ways

  480. had been in a similar circumstance

  481. to ourselves.

  482. Gathered around and hearing God's word.

  483. But what are they going to do with it?

  484. The purpose Jesus had

  485. for his church in the book of Acts,

  486. as you see,

  487. is that the good news of Jesus Christ

  488. would be proclaimed.

  489. It's wonderful to read

  490. through the book of Acts

  491. because you see the power

  492. of God at work

  493. in so many different ways.

  494. And in some ways,

  495. it can almost make you feel

  496. a little discouraged,

  497. if you like.

  498. For example,

  499. that verse,

  500. the last verse we read,

  501. verse 41,

  502. those who received his word

  503. were baptized

  504. and they were added

  505. that day about 3,000 souls.

  506. When you read that,

  507. you perhaps wish,

  508. if only we could see

  509. these kinds of days just now.

  510. If only here in our midst,

  511. today,

  512. 3,000 were added

  513. to the number being saved.

  514. That doesn't mean

  515. we should be discouraged, though.

  516. There is rejoicing in heaven

  517. over one sinner saved.

  518. And so tonight,

  519. we rejoice.

  520. We rejoice that God

  521. is still working,

  522. that God is still active

  523. in our midst.

  524. And not just here,

  525. but throughout our islands,

  526. throughout our nation,

  527. throughout the world.

  528. God is still building

  529. his church,

  530. so we do not lose heart.

  531. And when you think

  532. of the apostles themselves,

  533. Peter and others,

  534. you don't have to look far back

  535. to see a time

  536. when they were discouraged,

  537. a time when they thought

  538. their hope was gone.

  539. Having been with the Lord Jesus

  540. for three years

  541. during his public ministry,

  542. they watched on

  543. as he was crucified,

  544. not understanding

  545. what was happening,

  546. thinking that this was

  547. the end for them.

  548. All their expectations

  549. dashed,

  550. thinking of all the great things

  551. that he was going to do

  552. for them and to them.

  553. But here he was,

  554. their Lord and Savior,

  555. crucified,

  556. put to death

  557. at the hands

  558. of lawless men.

  559. But their hope

  560. was once again realized

  561. when they met

  562. with the risen Lord,

  563. when they saw

  564. that he is alive,

  565. that the pain of,

  566. the power of sin

  567. could not contain,

  568. the power of death

  569. could not have a hold on him.

  570. He is risen.

  571. And so tonight,

  572. as we go on,

  573. as we go forward

  574. from this communion,

  575. we remember too

  576. that he is risen for us.

  577. He is ascended

  578. to the right hand of God,

  579. that he is working

  580. and sovereign.

  581. So how will we come away

  582. this evening

  583. from this time of communion?

  584. There was a great change

  585. that took place

  586. in the apostles,

  587. even Peter himself.

  588. You think how he had

  589. disowned the Lord,

  590. how he had turned away,

  591. denied him three times.

  592. And yet he was asked

  593. that question,

  594. Peter,

  595. do you love me?

  596. You know, Lord,

  597. that I love you,

  598. was his response.

  599. And is that our response today

  600. as we were thinking

  601. of this morning,

  602. the love of Christ,

  603. it asks the question of us,

  604. do we love him?

  605. Do we love him

  606. as his people?

  607. Do we love him

  608. as those who are seeking,

  609. even as those

  610. who are maybe blind to him?

  611. Do we begin to realize

  612. the great love

  613. that he has shown to us

  614. as a people?

  615. So it challenges us,

  616. it rebukes us,

  617. it encourages us,

  618. it does all things for us

  619. as we see God's word

  620. encourage the disciples,

  621. the apostles,

  622. and all his people together.

  623. As we see a word

  624. that convicts people,

  625. as we see a word

  626. that is powerful and active,

  627. it reminds us

  628. that we continue

  629. to proclaim

  630. the good news

  631. of Jesus Christ.

  632. That is a powerful word

  633. that is still

  634. able to save.

  635. So the focus this evening

  636. as we see in verse 37

  637. is how are we going

  638. to respond to this word

  639. coming away

  640. from this weekend?

  641. What kind of response

  642. will we have

  643. and what kind of expectations

  644. will we have

  645. of ourselves

  646. and of our Lord

  647. going forward?

  648. Are our expectations

  649. of ourselves

  650. too high?

  651. Do we expect

  652. of ourselves

  653. to be able

  654. to do everything

  655. to obtain

  656. our own salvation?

  657. Do we have to realize

  658. that these expectations

  659. will never be realized?

  660. Are our expectations

  661. of our Lord

  662. too small?

  663. Do we think

  664. he's not able

  665. to do

  666. all that we see

  667. him doing here

  668. in the word

  669. before us?

  670. He is still able.

  671. In that chapter

  672. we read this morning

  673. in Ephesians

  674. it says

  675. that we pray

  676. and look to the one

  677. who is able

  678. to do abundantly

  679. more than we ask

  680. or imagine.

  681. We are to fix

  682. our eyes

  683. on him.

  684. So what's happening

  685. here?

  686. Well God is at work

  687. through the preaching

  688. of the word

  689. and the power

  690. of the spirit

  691. and what we pray

  692. for is that God

  693. will continue

  694. to work

  695. in this way.

  696. The people here

  697. are convicted.

  698. It says

  699. there in verse 37

  700. when they heard

  701. this

  702. were cut

  703. to the heart

  704. and that's

  705. something you've

  706. heard this weekend

  707. cut to your heart.

  708. Has God

  709. been piercing

  710. you

  711. with his word

  712. in this way?

  713. Ministering to you

  714. in a new way

  715. and reminding you

  716. that when you

  717. have Christ

  718. you have so much.

  719. Don't lose

  720. your focus

  721. from him.

  722. Don't lose

  723. your sense

  724. of expectation

  725. in him.

  726. Don't lose

  727. your urgency

  728. for him

  729. or if you

  730. are seeking

  731. him or even

  732. blind to him

  733. is he cutting

  734. you in the heart

  735. and reminding

  736. you you are

  737. lost without him.

  738. This word

  739. is a powerful

  740. word.

  741. When it says

  742. there that they

  743. were cut

  744. to the heart

  745. pricked to the

  746. heart

  747. it means that

  748. they were

  749. pierced

  750. or stabbed.

  751. There's a sense

  752. of pain

  753. in this word.

  754. It causes

  755. discomfort

  756. and as we

  757. hear God's

  758. word

  759. if we are

  760. not believing

  761. it in its

  762. fullness

  763. then it

  764. causes us

  765. pain.

  766. It should

  767. prick us

  768. to our

  769. heart.

  770. And so

  771. God is

  772. still speaking

  773. and as he

  774. speaks

  775. it calls

  776. for a

  777. response.

  778. A response

  779. from every

  780. one of us.

  781. Will we go

  782. forward

  783. in faith?

  784. Will we put

  785. our trust

  786. in him?

  787. And the

  788. response

  789. that we see

  790. here

  791. we see

  792. it in

  793. three

  794. different

  795. ways.

  796. First of

  797. all we

  798. see the

  799. inquiry

  800. the

  801. inquiring

  802. nature

  803. of the

  804. people.

  805. A people

  806. who had

  807. just before

  808. this sermon

  809. had been

  810. mocking and

  811. joking about

  812. God's people

  813. who had the

  814. spirit poured

  815. out upon

  816. them claiming

  817. that they

  818. were drunk

  819. claiming

  820. them that

  821. they were

  822. crazy out

  823. of their

  824. minds.

  825. Well Peter

  826. says at the

  827. start of

  828. this section

  829. we read

  830. in verse

  831. 14

  832. men of

  833. Judea

  834. and all

  835. who dwell

  836. in Jerusalem

  837. let this

  838. be known

  839. to you

  840. and give

  841. ear to

  842. my words

  843. these men

  844. are not

  845. drunk as

  846. you suppose.

  847. He's giving

  848. them a

  849. warning.

  850. He's saying

  851. don't mock

  852. them but

  853. hear what

  854. I have to

  855. say.

  856. And that's

  857. what we are

  858. to do as

  859. we listen

  860. to God's

  861. word.

  862. We are to

  863. hear what

  864. he is

  865. saying to

  866. us.

  867. And Peter

  868. here preached

  869. a powerful

  870. sermon.

  871. A powerful

  872. sermon

  873. calling on

  874. people to

  875. come and

  876. see their

  877. need of

  878. Christ.

  879. And to

  880. come and

  881. see that

  882. he is the

  883. only way

  884. to salvation.

  885. And the

  886. gospel it

  887. always leads

  888. to questions.

  889. It always

  890. leads to us

  891. asking questions.

  892. Sometimes it's

  893. asking questions

  894. of us and

  895. sometimes we're

  896. asking questions

  897. of the gospel.

  898. And perhaps

  899. that's the stage

  900. we're in in our

  901. lives just now.

  902. we're asking

  903. these kinds

  904. of questions

  905. of the

  906. gospel.

  907. Is it

  908. true?

  909. Is this

  910. really

  911. true?

  912. This word

  913. that I've

  914. heard so

  915. often, this

  916. word that

  917. has been

  918. around for

  919. so long,

  920. is it

  921. really

  922. true?

  923. The world

  924. tells me

  925. it's not.

  926. The world

  927. tells me we

  928. don't need

  929. this anymore

  930. so can I

  931. just leave

  932. it aside or

  933. is there

  934. some truth

  935. in here

  936. that I need

  937. to hear?

  938. There is

  939. truth here

  940. for us

  941. all to

  942. hear.

  943. Do I

  944. need it?

  945. Maybe you're

  946. saying that

  947. to yourself.

  948. Yes.

  949. We all

  950. need this

  951. word.

  952. Every one

  953. of us.

  954. We need

  955. to hear

  956. this word

  957. and we

  958. need to

  959. heed

  960. this

  961. word.

  962. Do I

  963. believe it?

  964. It's the

  965. question that

  966. it leads

  967. to as well.

  968. Do I

  969. believe

  970. what this

  971. word is

  972. saying?

  973. Tonight

  974. do you

  975. believe what

  976. you read

  977. in the

  978. word of

  979. God?

  980. Do you

  981. believe in

  982. the Son

  983. of God

  984. the Lord

  985. Jesus

  986. Christ?

  987. The fact

  988. that he

  989. came into

  990. this world

  991. that he

  992. died on

  993. the cross

  994. that he

  995. rose again

  996. that he

  997. is coming

  998. again.

  999. Do you

  1000. believe these

  1001. things in

  1002. your heart?

  1003. This word

  1004. leads to

  1005. inquiry.

  1006. It leads

  1007. to questions.

  1008. But what we

  1009. see here is

  1010. initially the

  1011. people had

  1012. no interest.

  1013. They had no

  1014. interest until

  1015. this word

  1016. was preached

  1017. to them.

  1018. A people

  1019. who had

  1020. gathered to

  1021. remember the

  1022. Passover.

  1023. What

  1024. foreshadowed the

  1025. Lord's Supper.

  1026. They had come

  1027. to remember.

  1028. But what's

  1029. amazing about

  1030. it is they

  1031. missed the

  1032. whole point.

  1033. This Christ

  1034. who had

  1035. represented,

  1036. who they

  1037. had seen,

  1038. who they

  1039. had crucified,

  1040. he meant

  1041. nothing to

  1042. them.

  1043. They were

  1044. oblivious to

  1045. the fact that

  1046. he was before

  1047. them, that

  1048. they had

  1049. crucified him.

  1050. And that's

  1051. the way God's

  1052. word can

  1053. sometimes be

  1054. for us.

  1055. I pray not,

  1056. but today did

  1057. you come and

  1058. go from here

  1059. without thinking,

  1060. what does the

  1061. bread and the

  1062. wine mean?

  1063. Has it just

  1064. become a ritual

  1065. that we go

  1066. through?

  1067. Has it become

  1068. something that we

  1069. don't really think

  1070. about?

  1071. What are we

  1072. actually doing?

  1073. What are we

  1074. remembering

  1075. here?

  1076. I pray that

  1077. today, as we

  1078. are reminded

  1079. once again,

  1080. that it would

  1081. be real to

  1082. us.

  1083. That what we

  1084. would have been

  1085. thinking wouldn't

  1086. have been the

  1087. kind of things

  1088. that they would

  1089. have been

  1090. thinking as they

  1091. remembered the

  1092. Passover.

  1093. Probably just

  1094. looking ahead to

  1095. the week that

  1096. lay before them.

  1097. Looking ahead to

  1098. going back to

  1099. their own homes,

  1100. going back to

  1101. their work,

  1102. going back to

  1103. their families,

  1104. carrying on with

  1105. life, making

  1106. no impression on

  1107. them.

  1108. Is that how

  1109. we are going

  1110. to go away

  1111. from here

  1112. today?

  1113. Once again,

  1114. having seen

  1115. or taken part

  1116. in the Lord's

  1117. suburb, but

  1118. not realizing

  1119. or not letting

  1120. it sink in

  1121. to us, what

  1122. we've done,

  1123. what we've

  1124. experienced,

  1125. what we've

  1126. seen, what

  1127. God has

  1128. said.

  1129. It should

  1130. lead to us

  1131. to ask

  1132. questions.

  1133. Instead of

  1134. meaning nothing,

  1135. it should

  1136. mean everything.

  1137. we came to

  1138. remember the

  1139. Lord's death

  1140. until he

  1141. comes.

  1142. And the

  1143. inquiries that

  1144. that leads

  1145. to, it

  1146. leads to us

  1147. asking questions.

  1148. When we are

  1149. dead in our

  1150. trespasses and

  1151. sins, as the

  1152. word says, when

  1153. we know that we

  1154. are lost in

  1155. this world, we

  1156. have all these

  1157. questions, where

  1158. can we turn?

  1159. Well, the

  1160. people here, as

  1161. they heard this

  1162. word, as they

  1163. were cut to

  1164. the heart, they

  1165. said to Peter

  1166. and the rest of

  1167. the apostles,

  1168. brothers, what

  1169. shall we do?

  1170. And is that the

  1171. question on your

  1172. heart tonight?

  1173. What shall I

  1174. do?

  1175. There are so

  1176. many questions

  1177. in the Bible,

  1178. but some of the

  1179. most powerful

  1180. questions are

  1181. the personal

  1182. questions that

  1183. we have to

  1184. reply to the

  1185. Lord Jesus

  1186. himself.

  1187. there's two I

  1188. want to

  1189. highlight.

  1190. One is before

  1191. us here, the

  1192. other is in

  1193. Mark chapter

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  1194. 8 and

  1195. verse 29.

  1196. The question

  1197. that Jesus

  1198. asks of the

  1199. disciples there,

  1200. he's saying in

  1201. Mark, he's

  1202. speaking to them

  1203. about what

  1204. people are

  1205. saying about

  1206. who he is.

  1207. Some are

  1208. saying you're a

  1209. prophet, some

  1210. are saying you're

  1211. Elijah.

  1212. There are all

  1213. kinds of

  1214. opinion on who

  1215. Jesus is, just

  1216. the same as the

  1217. world we live in

  1218. today.

  1219. All kinds of

  1220. opinion about

  1221. Jesus.

  1222. But Jesus, he

  1223. boils it down to

  1224. one question.

  1225. And he says to

  1226. them as he says

  1227. to us, but

  1228. what about you?

  1229. He says, who

  1230. do you say

  1231. that I am?

  1232. And that's the

  1233. question we're

  1234. asked tonight.

  1235. Who do you

  1236. say that

  1237. Jesus is?

  1238. And the

  1239. question that

  1240. Peter has for

  1241. them here as

  1242. well, that they

  1243. have of Peter

  1244. is, what

  1245. shall we

  1246. do?

  1247. When Jesus

  1248. asks that

  1249. question, who

  1250. do you say

  1251. that I am?

  1252. Surely our

  1253. response is what

  1254. should be the

  1255. same as Peter

  1256. who answered

  1257. him, who

  1258. said, you

  1259. are the

  1260. Christ, the

  1261. Messiah, the

  1262. chosen one.

  1263. God

  1264. has for

  1265. him.

  1266. And when we

  1267. begin to realize who

  1268. he is and what

  1269. he's done, it

  1270. leads to this

  1271. second question

  1272. that we have

  1273. here in verse

  1274. 37.

  1275. As they ask of

  1276. him, brothers,

  1277. what shall we

  1278. do?

  1279. The same

  1280. question that

  1281. later on in the

  1282. book of Acts in

  1283. chapter 16, the

  1284. Philippian jailer

  1285. has.

  1286. What must I do

  1287. to be saved?

  1288. That should be

  1289. the burning

  1290. question in our

  1291. hearts tonight.

  1292. What must I

  1293. do to be

  1294. saved?

  1295. Because it

  1296. comes from

  1297. understanding of

  1298. who Jesus

  1299. is.

  1300. And that's

  1301. what Peter has

  1302. done for them

  1303. here.

  1304. He has laid

  1305. the word of

  1306. God bare

  1307. before them.

  1308. This Jesus,

  1309. you crucified,

  1310. you put him

  1311. to death.

  1312. You did all

  1313. of this.

  1314. Your sins

  1315. nailed him

  1316. to the

  1317. tree.

  1318. But God

  1319. has raised

  1320. him from

  1321. the dead.

  1322. Look at

  1323. verse 22.

  1324. He says

  1325. there,

  1326. Men of

  1327. Israel,

  1328. hear these

  1329. words.

  1330. Jesus of

  1331. Nazareth,

  1332. a man

  1333. attested

  1334. to you by

  1335. God with

  1336. mighty works

  1337. and wonders

  1338. and signs

  1339. that God

  1340. did through

  1341. him in

  1342. your midst.

  1343. As you

  1344. yourselves

  1345. know,

  1346. this Jesus

  1347. delivered up

  1348. according to

  1349. the definite

  1350. plan and

  1351. foreknowledge

  1352. of God,

  1353. you crucified

  1354. and killed

  1355. by the hands

  1356. of lawless

  1357. men.

  1358. But God

  1359. raised him

  1360. up.

  1361. You

  1362. crucified,

  1363. he says.

  1364. And this

  1365. is what leads

  1366. them to ask,

  1367. brothers,

  1368. what shall

  1369. we do?

  1370. In all

  1371. that we hear

  1372. from the

  1373. word of

  1374. God,

  1375. is that the

  1376. burning question

  1377. in your heart

  1378. tonight?

  1379. What shall

  1380. we do?

  1381. Well,

  1382. from inquiry

  1383. we see

  1384. here,

  1385. it leads

  1386. to the

  1387. exhortation

  1388. of Peter.

  1389. In verse

  1390. 38,

  1391. Peter said

  1392. to them,

  1393. repent

  1394. and be

  1395. baptized

  1396. every one

  1397. of you

  1398. in the

  1399. name of

  1400. Jesus

  1401. Christ

  1402. for the

  1403. forgiveness

  1404. of your

  1405. sins and

  1406. you will

  1407. receive the

  1408. gift of

  1409. the Holy

  1410. Spirit for

  1411. the promises

  1412. for you

  1413. and for

  1414. your children

  1415. and for

  1416. all who

  1417. are far

  1418. off.

  1419. everyone

  1420. whom the

  1421. Lord,

  1422. our God

  1423. calls to

  1424. himself.

  1425. This is

  1426. Peter's

  1427. response to

  1428. them,

  1429. exhortation,

  1430. what they

  1431. must do,

  1432. what we

  1433. must do.

  1434. As we

  1435. come away

  1436. from this

  1437. weekend,

  1438. this is a

  1439. reminder to

  1440. us of

  1441. what we

  1442. go on

  1443. doing,

  1444. coming to

  1445. the Lord

  1446. Jesus,

  1447. fixing our

  1448. eyes on

  1449. him,

  1450. repent,

  1451. repent,

  1452. he says.

  1453. Turn,

  1454. that means,

  1455. turn away

  1456. from the

  1457. direction

  1458. you're going,

  1459. away from

  1460. God and

  1461. turn to

  1462. him.

  1463. Can you

  1464. imagine what

  1465. it would be

  1466. like if no

  1467. one listened

  1468. to a word

  1469. you said?

  1470. If anyone

  1471. you spoke

  1472. to,

  1473. anyone you

  1474. shouted

  1475. to,

  1476. they're not

  1477. listening to

  1478. a thing

  1479. that you

  1480. say.

  1481. Maybe you

  1482. think this

  1483. is your

  1484. experience

  1485. even just

  1486. now.

  1487. Come to

  1488. my home

  1489. for a

  1490. minute,

  1491. you think

  1492. nobody's

  1493. listening to

  1494. a word

  1495. I'm saying

  1496. anyway.

  1497. But imagine

  1498. if that was

  1499. your situation

  1500. day after

  1501. day after

  1502. day.

  1503. You're crying

  1504. out,

  1505. you're shouting

  1506. for help,

  1507. you're asking

  1508. for help

  1509. in so many

  1510. different

  1511. situations,

  1512. and no

  1513. one is

  1514. listening.

  1515. Is that

  1516. the way

  1517. God is

  1518. with us?

  1519. We may

  1520. feel that

  1521. no one's

  1522. listening

  1523. to us,

  1524. but there

  1525. is a

  1526. God

  1527. who is.

  1528. And that's

  1529. what we're

  1530. constantly

  1531. reminded of

  1532. in his

  1533. word,

  1534. that he

  1535. is a

  1536. God

  1537. who

  1538. listens,

  1539. and a

  1540. God who

  1541. hears

  1542. the cries

  1543. of his

  1544. people.

  1545. That psalm

  1546. that we

  1547. were singing

  1548. together,

  1549. Psalm 116,

  1550. a wonderful

  1551. reminder there

  1552. of a love

  1553. for the

  1554. Lord.

  1555. I love

  1556. the Lord

  1557. because my

  1558. voice and

  1559. prayers

  1560. heeded

  1561. here.

  1562. Even when

  1563. we feel

  1564. no one

  1565. else is

  1566. listening,

  1567. God is

  1568. listening.

  1569. And that

  1570. is Peter's

  1571. exhortation

  1572. to them

  1573. here.

  1574. Repent,

  1575. be baptized,

  1576. turn to

  1577. the Lord

  1578. Jesus Christ.

  1579. God

  1580. listens to

  1581. the pleas

  1582. of his

  1583. people.

  1584. God

  1585. listens to

  1586. the cries

  1587. of his

  1588. people.

  1589. and he

  1590. will listen

  1591. to

  1592. yours.

  1593. If you

  1594. are seeking

  1595. the Lord,

  1596. the Lord

  1597. says,

  1598. seek and

  1599. you will

  1600. find.

  1601. Knock and

  1602. the door

  1603. will be

  1604. opened unto

  1605. you.

  1606. And he's

  1607. saying keep

  1608. going.

  1609. He's

  1610. listening.

  1611. As a

  1612. people,

  1613. as God's

  1614. people,

  1615. do we

  1616. give up in

  1617. prayer too

  1618. easily?

  1619. Or do we

  1620. keep praying

  1621. with that

  1622. prayerful

  1623. passion?

  1624. That he

  1625. will listen,

  1626. that he

  1627. will answer

  1628. our prayers.

  1629. Again,

  1630. as we

  1631. come away

  1632. from this

  1633. weekend,

  1634. is to

  1635. have that

  1636. expectation

  1637. that he

  1638. will listen,

  1639. that he

  1640. will hear

  1641. my cry.

  1642. So here

  1643. in verse

  1644. 38,

  1645. Peter is

  1646. exhorting

  1647. his people.

  1648. He is

  1649. exhorting

  1650. them,

  1651. repent and

  1652. be baptized.

  1653. And if

  1654. you do,

  1655. there is

  1656. this promise

  1657. for you

  1658. that you

  1659. will receive

  1660. the gift

  1661. of the

  1662. Holy Spirit

  1663. for you

  1664. and your

  1665. children

  1666. and for

  1667. all who

  1668. are afar

  1669. of,

  1670. everyone

  1671. whom the

  1672. Lord calls

  1673. to himself.

  1674. And you

  1675. notice how

  1676. he keeps

  1677. going.

  1678. It says

  1679. in verse

  1680. 40,

  1681. with many

  1682. other words

  1683. he bore

  1684. witness and

  1685. continued to

  1686. exhort

  1687. them,

  1688. saying,

  1689. save

  1690. yourselves

  1691. from this

  1692. crooked

  1693. generation.

  1694. It was

  1695. the role

  1696. of the

  1697. apostles,

  1698. the early

  1699. church,

  1700. to go

  1701. out and

  1702. proclaim

  1703. the word

  1704. of God.

  1705. It's the

  1706. privilege of

  1707. every preacher

  1708. to go out

  1709. with the

  1710. word of

  1711. God,

  1712. to exhort

  1713. a people,

  1714. to plead

  1715. with a

  1716. people.

  1717. And it's

  1718. the same

  1719. message.

  1720. Same

  1721. message you

  1722. hear from

  1723. myself,

  1724. you hear from

  1725. James,

  1726. you hear from

  1727. every preacher

  1728. who stands

  1729. in this

  1730. pulpit,

  1731. a pleading,

  1732. an urgency,

  1733. a crying

  1734. unto you

  1735. who are

  1736. lost,

  1737. repent

  1738. and be

  1739. baptized,

  1740. every one

  1741. of you.

  1742. Listen to

  1743. what he is

  1744. saying.

  1745. He says,

  1746. save

  1747. yourselves

  1748. from this

  1749. crooked

  1750. generation.

  1751. salvation.

  1752. We live

  1753. in a

  1754. world that

  1755. is

  1756. perishing.

  1757. We live

  1758. as a

  1759. people who

  1760. are

  1761. perishing.

  1762. We live

  1763. as a

  1764. people who

  1765. have no

  1766. continuing

  1767. city here.

  1768. The day

  1769. will come

  1770. when we're

  1771. called away.

  1772. Our time

  1773. will come.

  1774. And that is

  1775. the urgency

  1776. of this

  1777. message.

  1778. save

  1779. yourselves

  1780. from this

  1781. crooked

  1782. generation.

  1783. Repent

  1784. and be

  1785. baptized.

  1786. Turn

  1787. to the

  1788. Lord.

  1789. Do not

  1790. harden

  1791. your

  1792. hearts.

  1793. Don't let

  1794. this become

  1795. just a

  1796. ritual,

  1797. coming into

  1798. the place

  1799. of God

  1800. and going

  1801. away

  1802. and thinking

  1803. nothing of

  1804. it.

  1805. Hear

  1806. what God

  1807. is saying.

  1808. Hear

  1809. that he

  1810. is crying

  1811. to his

  1812. people.

  1813. Be saved.

  1814. Repent

  1815. and turn.

  1816. The word

  1817. says here

  1818. that with

  1819. many other

  1820. words he

  1821. exhorted

  1822. them.

  1823. And those

  1824. who received

  1825. his word

  1826. it says

  1827. in verse

  1828. 41.

  1829. In other

  1830. translations

  1831. it says

  1832. those who

  1833. gladly

  1834. received

  1835. his word.

  1836. They were

  1837. baptized.

  1838. they

  1839. believed

  1840. they

  1841. turned

  1842. to

  1843. God.

  1844. Oh

  1845. the joy

  1846. of hearing

  1847. the voice

  1848. of God

  1849. and turning

  1850. to him.

  1851. Listening

  1852. to him

  1853. and finding

  1854. in him

  1855. the joy

  1856. of salvation.

  1857. Finding

  1858. in him

  1859. the beauty

  1860. of this

  1861. world

  1862. fulfilled

  1863. through

  1864. Christ.

  1865. Because

  1866. there is

  1867. nothing in

  1868. this world

  1869. that compares

  1870. on the

  1871. love of

  1872. Christ

  1873. to us.

  1874. that is

  1875. the exhortation

  1876. that he

  1877. gives to

  1878. us again

  1879. and again.

  1880. And the

  1881. exhortation

  1882. that I

  1883. give to

  1884. you tonight

  1885. to plead

  1886. with you

  1887. that if

  1888. you are

  1889. lost

  1890. repent

  1891. turn

  1892. save

  1893. yourselves

  1894. from this

  1895. crooked

  1896. generation

  1897. by coming

  1898. to the

  1899. Lord Jesus.

  1900. He hears

  1901. your cries.

  1902. He will

  1903. listen.

  1904. and he

  1905. will never

  1906. turn you

  1907. away.

  1908. You may

  1909. find others

  1910. who won't

  1911. listen to

  1912. a word

  1913. that you

  1914. say.

  1915. But the

  1916. Lord will

  1917. always listen.

  1918. And may

  1919. you come

  1920. to sing

  1921. that song

  1922. anew

  1923. with more

  1924. meaning

  1925. than ever

  1926. before

  1927. to say

  1928. I love

  1929. the Lord

  1930. because my

  1931. voice

  1932. and prayers

  1933. heeded

  1934. here.

  1935. The final

  1936. thing we

  1937. see in

  1938. this

  1939. is that

  1940. sense of

  1941. expectation.

  1942. that

  1943. sense of

  1944. expectation

  1945. that we

  1946. should have

  1947. in our

  1948. hearts

  1949. in two

  1950. different

  1951. ways.

  1952. When you

  1953. look at

  1954. Peter

  1955. preaching

  1956. this

  1957. gospel

  1958. to the

  1959. people

  1960. then

  1961. you

  1962. wonder

  1963. what he

  1964. expected

  1965. at the

  1966. end

  1967. of it.

  1968. A

  1969. people

  1970. who had

  1971. been

  1972. shouting

  1973. abuse

  1974. one

  1975. minute

  1976. you

  1977. notice

  1978. what it

  1979. says

  1980. in

  1981. verse

  1982. 41

  1983. they

  1984. received

  1985. the

  1986. word

  1987. gladly

  1988. and

  1989. were

  1990. baptized

  1991. and

  1992. they

  1993. were

  1994. added

  1995. that

  1996. day

  1997. about

  1998. 3,000

  1999. souls.

  2000. The

  2001. wonder

  2002. and beauty

  2003. of the

  2004. power of

  2005. the gospel

  2006. and we

  2007. should never

  2008. lose sight

  2009. of that.

  2010. So two

  2011. expectations

  2012. that we

  2013. should have

  2014. coming away

  2015. from this

  2016. weekend.

  2017. First of

  2018. all

  2019. for those

  2020. who may

  2021. be seeking

  2022. the

  2023. Lord

  2024. to have

  2025. your

  2026. expectations

  2027. in

  2028. him

  2029. and not

  2030. in

  2031. yourself.

  2032. You

  2033. will never

  2034. be good

  2035. enough

  2036. through

  2037. anything

  2038. that you

  2039. do

  2040. but you

  2041. can put

  2042. your

  2043. trust

  2044. in the

  2045. Lord

  2046. Jesus

  2047. Christ.

  2048. Until

  2049. we come

  2050. under this

  2051. conviction

  2052. of the

  2053. word

  2054. we feel

  2055. that we

  2056. are good

  2057. enough

  2058. that we

  2059. are all

  2060. right as

  2061. we are

  2062. but this

  2063. word

  2064. that cuts

  2065. to the

  2066. heart

  2067. is

  2068. you're

  2069. not.

  2070. You're

  2071. not all

  2072. right

  2073. without

  2074. Christ.

  2075. It's

  2076. not all

  2077. well

  2078. without

  2079. him

  2080. far

  2081. from

  2082. it.

  2083. There's

  2084. a lost

  2085. eternity

  2086. before

  2087. you.

  2088. But you

  2089. can expect

  2090. great things

  2091. from God.

  2092. You can

  2093. have an

  2094. expectation

  2095. that he

  2096. will listen

  2097. to you.

  2098. That through

  2099. his word

  2100. he is

  2101. speaking to

  2102. you.

  2103. this word

  2104. that cuts

  2105. you to

  2106. the heart.

  2107. But will

  2108. you respond?

  2109. Will you

  2110. listen?

  2111. The

  2112. pleading

  2113. is to

  2114. not

  2115. harden

  2116. your

  2117. heart.

  2118. Listen

  2119. to what

  2120. he is

  2121. saying

  2122. and repent

  2123. and believe.

  2124. Because what

  2125. is more

  2126. important to

  2127. you?

  2128. A few

  2129. years in

  2130. this world

  2131. with the

  2132. pleasures that

  2133. it offers

  2134. and I

  2135. lost

  2136. eternity

  2137. or years

  2138. of blessing

  2139. by him

  2140. in this

  2141. world and

  2142. an eternity

  2143. with him

  2144. forever.

  2145. Nothing

  2146. compares.

  2147. So your

  2148. expectations

  2149. coming away

  2150. as a

  2151. seeker.

  2152. Keep

  2153. seeking.

  2154. Keep asking.

  2155. Keep knocking.

  2156. Keep going.

  2157. Because he

  2158. will listen.

  2159. But what

  2160. about our

  2161. expectation

  2162. as believers

  2163. as well?

  2164. We come

  2165. away from

  2166. this weekend

  2167. and let us

  2168. have great

  2169. expectations

  2170. of what

  2171. God can

  2172. do.

  2173. Great

  2174. expectations

  2175. that God

  2176. is working.

  2177. That God

  2178. is always

  2179. sovereign and

  2180. overruling

  2181. in all

  2182. things.

  2183. We may

  2184. not see

  2185. 3,000

  2186. souls

  2187. converted

  2188. here today.

  2189. But we

  2190. rejoice

  2191. in even

  2192. one.

  2193. Because

  2194. remember

  2195. that there

  2196. is rejoicing

  2197. in heaven

  2198. over one

  2199. sinner

  2200. saved.

  2201. So remember

  2202. God is

  2203. at work.

  2204. God can

  2205. do abundantly

  2206. more than

  2207. we ask

  2208. or imagine.

  2209. And may

  2210. our expectations

  2211. of him

  2212. never diminish,

  2213. never wane.

  2214. He is

  2215. able.

  2216. The

  2217. psalmist

  2218. says in

  2219. Psalm 62

  2220. My soul

  2221. wait thou

  2222. with patience

  2223. upon thy

  2224. God

  2225. alone.

  2226. On him

  2227. dependeth

  2228. all my

  2229. hope and

  2230. expectation.

  2231. He only

  2232. my salvation

  2233. is and my

  2234. strong rock

  2235. is he.

  2236. He only

  2237. is my

  2238. sure

  2239. defense.

  2240. I shall

  2241. not

  2242. move it

  2243. be.

  2244. As one

  2245. who believes

  2246. in the

  2247. Lord Jesus

  2248. Christ,

  2249. he is the

  2250. rock of

  2251. your salvation.

  2252. He is the

  2253. foundation

  2254. of your

  2255. salvation.

  2256. He will

  2257. never

  2258. let you

  2259. go.

  2260. Let us

  2261. always keep

  2262. the Lord

  2263. before us.

  2264. Let us

  2265. always look

  2266. unto him

  2267. and remember

  2268. the powerful

  2269. word that

  2270. Peter preached

  2271. and that saw

  2272. 3,000 souls

  2273. converted.

  2274. It's the same

  2275. word that we

  2276. have in our

  2277. hands tonight.

  2278. The same

  2279. word we have

  2280. to share

  2281. with the

  2282. world around

  2283. us.

  2284. A word

  2285. that is

  2286. powerful.

  2287. A word

  2288. that we

  2289. pray many

  2290. will hear

  2291. and be

  2292. cut to the

  2293. heart by

  2294. and ask

  2295. the question

  2296. what shall

  2297. we do?

  2298. And as

  2299. they ask

  2300. may we be

  2301. able to

  2302. say

  2303. repent

  2304. and be

  2305. baptized

  2306. every one

  2307. of you.

  2308. Save

  2309. yourselves

  2310. from this

  2311. crooked

  2312. generation by

  2313. turning to

  2314. the Lord

  2315. Jesus

  2316. Christ

  2317. the one

  2318. who saved

  2319. me

  2320. the one

  2321. who can

  2322. save

  2323. anyone.

  2324. He is a

  2325. precious

  2326. saviour.

  2327. Let us

  2328. set him

  2329. before us

  2330. constantly

  2331. for he

  2332. will never

  2333. move.

  2334. He will

  2335. never let

  2336. us down.

  2337. So let

  2338. our expectations

  2339. of him

  2340. be great.

  2341. May the

  2342. Lord bless

  2343. his word

  2344. to us.

  2345. We're going

  2346. to conclude

  2347. by singing

  2348. to God's

  2349. praise.

  2350. The words

  2351. that we've

  2352. read that

  2353. Peter's quoted

  2354. in his sermon

  2355. there are the

  2356. words of

  2357. Psalm 16.

  2358. We're going

  2359. to sing in

  2360. the Sing

  2361. Psalms

  2362. version.

  2363. Psalm 16

  2364. in the Sing

  2365. Psalms version

  2366. on page 17

  2367. at verse 8

  2368. to the end

  2369. of the

  2370. Psalm.

  2371. Before me

  2372. constantly

  2373. I set

  2374. the Lord

  2375. alone

  2376. because he

  2377. is at my

  2378. right hand

  2379. I'll not

  2380. be overthrown.

  2381. Therefore

  2382. my heart

  2383. is glad

  2384. my tongue

  2385. with joy

  2386. will sing

  2387. my body

  2388. too

  2389. will rest

  2390. secure

  2391. in hope

  2392. unwavering.

  2393. We'll sing

  2394. verse 8

  2395. to 11

  2396. to God's

  2397. praise

  2398. in the

  2399. Tuna's

  2400. Golden

  2401. Hill.

  2402. Amen.

  2403. Before me

  2404. constantly

  2405. I

  2406. send

  2407. the

  2408. Lord

  2409. alone

  2410. because

  2411. he

  2412. is

  2413. at my

  2414. right

  2415. hand

  2416. I'll

  2417. not

  2418. be

  2419. overthrown.

  2420. throne

  2421. The

  2422. fall

  2423. of my

  2424. heart

  2425. is

  2426. glad

  2427. My

  2428. town

  2429. with

  2430. joy

  2431. will

  2432. sing

  2433. My

  2434. body

  2435. too

  2436. be

  2437. open

  2438. for

  2439. forever

  2440. His

  2441. Trip

  2442. and

  2443. will

  2444. leave

  2445. for

  2446. You

  2447. will

  2448. not

  2449. allow

  2450. For

  2451. He

  2452. will

  2453. Thank you.

  2454. Thank you.

  2455. Thank you.

  2456. Your face will shine.

  2457. Amen.

  2458. Amen.

  2459. Amen.

2460. As we're going through to the hall for food in a time of fellowship, I'm going to close

2461. with a word of grace and then the benediction, and I'll go to the door to my left.

  2462. Amen.

  2463. Amen.

2464. Gracious Lord in heaven, we do thank you for every provision that you make for us.

2465. We thank you for every blessing that is ours in Christ Jesus.

2466. We thank you for your faithfulness to us, that we are blessed by you, that we have an abundance

  2467. of good things.

2468. And we thank you, Lord, for the time we've enjoyed together around your word this weekend,

2469. for the fellowship of your people in different homes.

2470. And as we go through to the hall for our time just now, we pray you'll continue with us and

2471. bless all that's been prepared for us and all who have helped in the preparation of food and

2472. setting up and everything else.

2473. We do thank you, Lord, for all in Christ Jesus.

2474. And now may grace, mercy, and peace from God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit rest upon and abide

2475. with us all now and forevermore.

  2476. Amen.

  2477. Thank you very much.

  2478. Amen.

  2479. Amen.

  2480. Amen.

  2481. Amen.

  2482. Amen.

  2483. Amen.

  2484. Amen.

  2485. Amen.
