  1. Now we're going to begin our worship singing today firstly in Psalm 34, Psalm number 34,

  2. that's on page number 40, a tuneless St. Stephen.

  3. At all times I will bless the Lord, I'll praise Him with my voice.

  4. Because I glory in the Lord, let troubled souls rejoice.

  5. Together let us praise the Lord, exalt His name with me.

  6. I sought the Lord, His answer came, from fears He set me free.

  7. The theme of our sermon this morning is Jesus, the light of the world,

  8. and that's following on from the Young Folks Club yesterday,

  9. which had that theme of Jesus, the light of the world.

  10. And in this psalm we find those who are looking to God, who look to Him,

  11. that means believing in Him, trusting in Him, that they come to shine with joy.

  12. They are like lights, as God gives them that joy.

  13. So Psalm 34, verses 1 to 9,

    Psalms 34:1–9

  14. At all times I will bless the Lord.

  15. At all times I will bless the Lord, I'll bless Him with my voice.

  16. Before us I will bless the Lord, let the Lord, let the troubled souls rejoice.

  17. To get that grace, praise the Lord, and so will live with me.

  18. I sought the Lord, His answer came, from fears He set me free.

  19. To get that grace, praise the Lord, let the Lord be with me.

  20. To get that grace, praise the Lord, let the Lord be with me.

  21. He set His people free.

  22. Come, take and see the Lord's truth, who does the heaven is blessed.

  23. O hear the Lord, you say, you will not be oppressed.

  24. Let's now pray briefly.

  25. Our prayer, first of all, is focusing on the children and the young folks.

  26. Lord, our gracious God, we thank you that we are together once again here to worship you.

  27. And we thank you for the guidance you give us in your word as to how we are to come to worship you.

  28. And in what spirit and frame of mind we ought to come to give praise to your name.

  29. Help us, Lord, as we have been singing of those who look to you and were brought to shine with joy.

  30. That we too, Lord, we pray to shine with that joy that knows Jesus as the joy of the world and the joy of our lives as well.

  31. We ask today your blessing, Lord, to follow what was done yesterday at the club.

  32. And we pray for all the children who attended, for their families and parents.

  33. We pray for the children here today.

  34. We give thanks for them and we give thanks, Lord, for the interest their families show in bringing them to church,

  35. bringing them to the gospel and teaching them the things of God.

  36. Lord, bless them, we pray today, and graciously apply your word to their hearts.

  37. Help them in their young lives, Lord, as they develop to continue to look to you

  38. and to continue to see you as the light of the world so that they may be guided in that right path

  39. and be kept, Lord, and protected from all the evil that is in the world.

  40. Lord, we know that there is much darkness in the world, many things that are contrary to what you tell us in your word

  41. and would lead us astray and lead us into a different kind of life to what you require of us.

  42. And so we pray that you would continue, Lord, to give us your light

  43. and to enable the children themselves to walk by the light of your word to guide them through life.

  44. Receive our thanks now and go with us into what remains of this day and of this service now.

  45. And all we ask is with the pardon of our sin, for Jesus' sake. Amen.

  46. Now, yesterday you had Jesus as the light of the world, as the theme of the conference,

  47. and that's what we're following through today as well.

  48. I was reading recently about a little boy in America,

  49. and the little boy had been given some verses to learn or some scripture to learn,

  50. and it was in fact this scripture, Jesus being the light of the world.

  51. And he was to recite or remember the words of that verse when it came to the assembly

  52. or the program that they had for Christmas.

  53. So his mum was a wee bit afraid that he wouldn't remember the words.

  54. I suppose all mums are like that, or all dads are like that,

  55. when their children are taking part in a Christmas concert or something,

  56. there's always the fear, well, I hope they don't forget what they were meant to say.

  57. And sure enough, this mum was afraid that her little boy would actually remember,

  58. would forget the words.

  59. So what she did was she made sure that she got a place in the front row of those who were at the assembly,

  60. so that if she saw the wee boys beginning to struggle for remembering the words,

  61. she would just mouth them and hopefully he would follow.

  62. And that's what happened.

  63. Sure enough, he actually forgot the words when he came to this line.

  64. So as mum went,

  65. and the boy still didn't know anything of what she was saying,

  66. so the silence just continued.

  67. And then she leaned forward out of her seat and whispered,

  68. Jesus is the light of, I am the light of the world, is what she said.

  69. And the boy said,

  70. my mum is the light of the world.

  71. And of course that destroyed any sense of concentration.

  72. And of course, his mum wasn't the light of the world,

  73. or she might have been very bright.

  74. Jesus is the light of the world.

  75. And that's what the Bible, of course, tells us.

  76. That's what we're going to be looking at today.

  77. Because the Bible tells us that there is a lot of darkness in the world, bad things.

  78. There's a lot of darkness in ourselves as well until Jesus gives us his light.

  79. And it's the light of Jesus that enables us to see properly into the darkness

  80. and to shine on our lives in such a way that provides for us a safe way onto heaven.

  81. Because if we listen to a lot of other voices that tell us,

  82. no, you should do this.

  83. Forget about God.

  84. Forget about the Bible.

  85. Jesus, the light of the world.

  86. You don't need all of that stuff.

  87. Well, that's going to lead us into darkness and into trouble.

  88. And we know that that's not going to be good for us at all.

  89. So Jesus, as the light of the world, has given us his word,

  90. which also is described as a light for our feet in the Psalms.

  91. And apart from everything else, Jesus himself is the light of the world.

  92. And as he shines brightly into our lives, what does he show?

  93. He shows us that we need himself.

  94. He shows us that we actually need to have our sins forgiven,

  95. that we need to be cleaned up spiritually,

  96. and he's the one who forgives our sins.

  97. That's why he was given the name Jesus.

  98. Remember that the angel came to Joseph and said,

  99. Don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife.

  100. For the child that will be born, she will bear a son,

  101. and you will call his name Jesus,

  102. for he will save his people from their sins.

  103. That's what his name Jesus really is about.

  104. The Savior who saves his people from their sins.

  105. So today, as you've been learning about Jesus, the light of the world,

  106. we're going to be looking in the sermon later

  107. at how we come to know this light for ourselves,

  108. and how we need his light in our lives,

  109. whatever age we're at.

  110. And you today as children are not too young at all

  111. to know Jesus for yourselves as the light of the world,

  112. the light that gives us eternal life.

  113. Now we're going to say the Lord's Prayer together at this point,

  114. so let's just say the Lord's Prayer.

  115. Our Father, which art in heaven,

  116. hallowed be thy name.

  117. Thy kingdom come.

  118. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  119. Give us this day our daily bread,

  120. and forgive us our debts,

  121. as we forgive our debtors.

  122. And lead us not into temptation,

  123. but deliver us from evil.

  124. For thine is the kingdom,

  125. and the power and the glory forever.

  126. Amen.

  127. I'm going to sing again now.

  128. This time we're singing from Psalm 119.

  129. It's on page 163,

  130. verses 105 to 112.

  131. The tune this time is Eventide.

  132. And there's the words there that tell us about God's Word being a lamp

  133. that shines us for our feet, for our path.

  134. Your Word's a lamp that shines before my feet.

  135. It is a light that guides me on my way.

  136. The oath that I have taken,

  137. I have confirmed that all your righteous laws I will obey.

  138. We'll sing the four stanzas down to verse 112.

  139. Your words, a lamp that shines before my feet.

  140. Your words, a lamp that shines before my feet.

  141. It is a light that guides me on my way.

  142. The oath that I have taken,

  143. I have taken, I confirm,

  144. that all your righteous laws I will obey.

  145. O Lord, you know that I have suffered much.

  146. All night that hasOH keep my mind.

  147. My rest.

  148. Set the lower

  149. O Lord, I will notice,

  150. We guide you wholly off,

  151. Though constantly my life is in my hands,

  152. Although the wicked set us there for me,

  153. I have not left the path of your commands.

  154. Your statutes are my heritage always,

  155. And every day they make my heart rejoice.

  156. My heart is set on keeping your degrees,

  157. And to the very end they are my choice.

  158. Let's now read God's Word as we find that today in the Gospel of John.

  159. John chapter 9, and we're going to read verses 1 to 25.

    John 9 chapter mention

  160. So John chapter 9 from the beginning.

    John 9 chapter mention

  161. As Jesus passed by, he saw a man blind from birth,

  162. And his disciples asked him,

  163. Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents,

  164. That he was born blind?

  165. Jesus answered,

  166. It was not that this man sinned, nor his parents,

  167. But that the words of God,

  168. The works of God might be displayed in him.

  169. We must work the works of him who sent me,

  170. While it is day, night is coming,

  171. When no one can work.

  172. As long as I am in the world,

  173. I am the light of the world.

  174. Having said these things,

  175. He spat on the ground and made mud with saliva.

  176. Then he anointed the man's eyes with the mud,

  177. And said to him,

  178. Go, wash in the pool of Siloam,

  179. Which means scent.

  180. So he went and washed and came back seeing.

  181. The neighbors and those who had seen him before,

  182. As a beggar, were saying,

  183. Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?

  184. Some said,

  185. It is he.

  186. Others said,

  187. No, but he's like him.

  188. He kept saying,

  189. I am the man.

  190. So they said to him,

  191. Then how were your eyes opened?

  192. He answered,

  193. The man called Jesus made mud,

  194. And anointed my eyes,

  195. And said to me,

  196. Go to Siloam and wash.

  197. So I went and washed and received my sight.

  198. They said to him,

  199. Where is he?

  200. He said,

  201. I don't know.

  202. They brought to the Pharisees,

  203. The man who had formerly been blind,

  204. And now it was a Sabbath day,

  205. When Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes,

  206. So the Pharisees again asked him

  207. How he had received his sight.

  208. And he said to them,

  209. He put mud on my eyes,

  210. And I washed and I see.

  211. Some of the Pharisees said,

  212. This man is not from God,

  213. For he does not keep the Sabbath.

  214. But others said,

  215. How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?

  216. And there was a division among them.

  217. So they said again to the blind man,

  218. What do you say about him,

  219. Since he has opened your eyes?

  220. He said,

  221. He is a prophet.

  222. The Jews did not believe that he had been blind,

  223. And had received his sight,

  224. Until they called the parents of the man

  225. Who had received his sight,

  226. And asked them,

  227. Is this your son,

  228. Who you say was born blind?

  229. How then does he now see?

  230. His parents answered,

  231. We know that this is our son,

  232. And that he was born blind.

  233. But how he now sees,

  234. We do not know,

  235. Nor do we know who opened his eyes.

  236. Ask him.

  237. He is of age.

  238. He will speak for himself.

  239. His parents said these things,

  240. Because they feared the Jews.

  241. For the Jews had already agreed,

  242. That if anyone should confess Jesus to be the Christ,

  243. He would be put out of the synagogue.

  244. Therefore his parents said,

  245. He is of age.

  246. Ask him.

  247. So for the second time,

  248. They called the man who had been blind,

  249. And said to him,

  250. Give glory to God.

  251. We know that this man is a sinner.

  252. He answered,

  253. Whether he is a sinner,

  254. I do not know.

  255. One thing I do know,

  256. That though I was blind,

  257. Now I see.

  258. And so on,

  259. And may God bless to us that reading

  260. From his holy word.

  261. Let's now engage in prayer once again.

  262. Let's call upon the Lord.

  263. Our gracious God,

  264. We do give thanks that you are the one who opens the eyes of the blind.

  265. That you are the one whom your people call

  266. As the God who has done miraculous things.

  267. And we know that while this miracle

  268. That we've been reading about here,

  269. Lord,

  270. That happened so long ago,

  271. Is now in the past,

  272. And was a natural opening of the eyes.

  273. We thank you,

  274. Lord,

  275. For these spiritual openings that you cause,

  276. That enable us to see and to know yourself.

  277. We have thanks,

  278. Lord,

  279. For that great truth of your word,

  280. That your people are able to testify

  281. That whereas they were once blind,

  282. Yet now they see.

  283. And that they attribute this to your amazing grace.

  284. We thank you,

  285. Lord,

  286. Today that you are still opening eyes

  287. In various places throughout the world,

  288. And even amongst ourselves.

  289. That you are the one who brings your light

  290. Into the darkness of human life.

  291. And that you are the one who,

  292. As the light scatters the darkness.

  293. And we thank you,

  294. Lord,

  295. That we ourselves can look to you

  296. To enlighten us today,

  297. And to bring to us that light of life,

  298. Which you alone are able to give.

  299. And we thank you for the opportunity

  300. We have now

  301. To worship you together here in this place.

  302. And we thank you,

  303. Lord,

  304. That as we worship you here together,

  305. And so you impress upon us from your word,

  306. The many reasons why we worship you.

  307. The many things concerning your great name,

  308. That constrain us to worship you.

  309. To give glory to your name.

  310. To uplift your name in worship.

  311. And we thank you as we bow in your presence,

  312. That you are worthy of that worship,

  313. That worship of heaven itself,

  314. Which is perfect.

  315. And that worship that we seek to give you,

  316. Lord,

  317. As we come together today.

  318. Bless us then, we pray,

  319. And bless your word to us.

  320. Help us to see by the light of your truth.

  321. Enable us to have the testimony of the psalmist,

  322. Who could say as we have been singing,

  323. Lord,

  324. That your word was a lamp to his feet,

  325. A light to his path.

  326. We thank you for your word.

  327. We thank you for all that it contains.

  328. For the many ways in which it brings to us

  329. Such great truths that we are required to believe.

  330. And that we do believe, Lord,

  331. Despite the fact that so many of them

  332. Are beyond our full understanding.

  333. Give us faith, we pray,

  334. To embrace your word.

  335. Faith to live by the light that it gives us.

  336. Faith to trust in you through what your word tells us about you,

  337. And about ourselves.

  338. And we do give thanks today,

  339. That your word does not withhold the truth from us,

  340. About ourselves,

  341. About the world in which we live,

  342. And about why we are in the state we are in,

  343. In our lostness,

  344. And in our sinfulness.

  345. And that it does not hide from us the solution that you have provided,

  346. In the Lord Jesus Christ,

  347. The light of the world.

  348. We thank you, Lord,

  349. That you came into this world of darkness.

  350. And that as the light that you are,

  351. That you came to scatter the darkness in human life.

  352. We pray today, Lord, for all your people.

  353. We ask that you would bless them throughout the world today.

  354. Lord, we know that there are many of them

  355. In very different circumstances to ours.

  356. That many of them know the power of darkness

  357. Even more than we ourselves know.

  358. The pressure of persecution,

  359. The constraint that they are under from evil forces and powers

  360. That seek to have them follow the works of darkness.

  361. Lord, we give thanks that

  362. No amount of power on the part of darkness

  363. Is able to drive out the light that you create

  364. In the hearts of your people.

  365. And we pray, Lord,

  366. That today,

  367. Your people throughout the world may be encouraged.

  368. Even despite the many difficulties they face.

  369. We pray for them today that they may know

  370. That you have given them the light of your truth.

  371. And the light of your truth is

  372. A light that is always inextinguishable.

  373. And we'll lead them safely on.

  374. Bless them especially in places where

  375. Persecution,

  376. Where war,

  377. Where terror,

  378. Where deprivation

  379. Is faced by them.

  380. We thank again,

  381. Lord,

  382. Of the nation of Ukraine.

  383. And we pray for them today

  384. As they continue to suffer

  385. Adversity and suffer attack

  386. From Russian forces,

  387. From missiles,

  388. From strikes against their infrastructure

  389. That seeks to demoralize them.

  390. We pray that you would

  391. Maintain in them, Lord,

  392. That spirit that they have shown thus far.

  393. The spirit not only of resistance,

  394. But on the part of many of them,

  395. The spirit of trusting in the living God

  396. And trusting in Him

  397. For their salvation,

  398. For not only this darkness

  399. That's come to invade their land,

  400. But also that moral and spiritual darkness

  401. That they seek to be extinguished, Lord.

  402. We pray that in our own land too,

  403. The way in which darkness

  404. Has so much come upon us

  405. As a people

  406. Instead of the light of the gospel.

  407. Oh, Lord,

  408. We pray that the light of the gospel itself

  409. Might be blessed by you

  410. To our good.

  411. And we pray that that will penetrate

  412. To every area of our society,

  413. To those in government over us,

  414. Right through to those

  415. Who are in the greatest need.

  416. Gracious Lord,

  417. We ask for your blessing.

  418. We pray that you would

  419. Turn us to yourself

  420. And enable us

  421. To know you as the light of life,

  422. But ourselves as a people.

  423. For this is why

  424. You came into the world

  425. As you tell us in your word.

  426. You came that we might have life

  427. And have it the more abundantly.

  428. And so, Lord,

  429. We pray that today

  430. Your light will truly come

  431. To enlighten our paths through life

  432. So that we may follow you safely.

  433. We pray your blessing for all today

  434. Who have difficulty,

  435. Trials, adversity.

  436. We pray especially today, Lord,

  437. For these families

  438. Belonging to us as a congregation

  439. That mourn the passing of loved ones

  440. In this past week itself.

  441. Lord, we pray for them,

  442. For those who have had funerals

  443. In the past days.

  444. For those who are expecting

  445. Funerals in this week to come

  446. Graciously provide for them, we pray.

  447. Grant them your comfort.

  448. Lord, bless those who are ill

  449. At this time too.

  450. Bless those who are receiving treatment.

  451. Those who have gone through surgery.

  452. Those who have been waiting a long time

  453. For treatment or surgery

  454. Due to the circumstances, Lord,

  455. That prevail in our land at this time.

  456. We ask that You would bless them.

  457. We pray that You would bless

  458. The National Health Service too.

  459. So much in the news, O Lord,

  460. In these days.

  461. And we pray that You would continue

  462. To provide resources

  463. By which they may fully engage

  464. In the work You have called them to.

  465. And we pray for everyone involved

  466. In the work of the NHS.

  467. But we pray especially for those

  468. Who are at the front line of services

  469. And serve You so diligently

  470. From day to day

  471. In hospices and hospitals

  472. And in various clinics

  473. Throughout our land.

  474. Lord, we pray

  475. That You would continue

  476. To encourage them

  477. And that You would continue

  478. To provide them

  479. With not only substantial

  480. And sufficient monetary gain

  481. But also

  482. That You would give to them, Lord,

  483. The strength of spirit

  484. By which to continue

  485. In the face of

  486. What may at times

  487. Be so discouraging.

  488. Remember the preaching

  489. Of Your Word.

  490. Remember today Your Word

  491. As it goes forth, Lord,

  492. Throughout our land.

  493. Remember every congregation

  574. Let's turn again for a short time to John's Gospel, chapter 8 this time, and the words

  575. you find in verse 12.

  576. John chapter 8 and verse 12.

    John 8 chapter mention

  577. Again, Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world.

  578. Lord, whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

  579. When you look at the structure of John's Gospel, it's really interesting how you find him making

  580. statements like these, what's usually called the I am statements.

  581. Here it's I am the light of the world, but there are several of these throughout the

  582. Gospel of John, as you know, I'm sure.

  583. And the interesting thing is that the statements themselves are often, not always, but often

  584. accompanied by a miracle that helps to explain what he meant by the statement.

  585. For example, here you find, I am the light of the world, and you have to take this passage

  586. with you right into the next chapter, because there he opens the eyes of a man born blind

  587. to illustrate the fact that Jesus brings light to the blind, and of course that is also the

  588. case spiritually, which is what these miracles really reveal to us.

  589. You find the same chapter 6, when he spoke of himself as the bread of life, that's related

  590. to the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000.

  591. You find in chapter 11, Jesus saying to Martha, I am the resurrection and the life.

  592. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in

  593. me shall never die.

  594. Do you believe this?

  595. And he demonstrated the truth of that by the miracle of raising her brother, Lazarus, back

  596. from the dead.

  597. In other words, there is an explanation in miracle of the words that he uses to speak about himself,

  598. I am such and such.

  599. And here you find, we see the light of the world, I am the light of the world, illustrated,

  600. if you like, as we said, by the following miracle in chapter 9 here of the gospel.

  601. Now, it's interesting that when Jesus says, I am the light of the world, I am the bread

  602. of life, he's taking what we know as ordinary aspects of life as we know it, things in the

  603. natural world such as light and bread and so on, and he's using them in a way that provides

  604. profound spiritual teaching.

  605. That's one of the features of John's gospel, that he takes such things as here in the words

  606. of Jesus, things like light and darkness, and presents the truth, spiritual and moral truth,

  607. through these things so that we can better understand these concepts for ourselves.

  608. And as you know, light has certain properties.

  609. Light moves.

  610. Light is really a form of radiation in a sense, electromagnetic radiation.

  611. That's about as far as I know the physics of it.

  612. I know that light is something that travels very fast, and light, of course, is measured

  613. by scientists in those terms.

  614. And light is made up, white light, made up of the spectrum of light.

  615. All the colors that you know make up the spectrum, which you can see when white light is divided

  616. into the color spectrum by putting it through a prism of some kind.

  617. So light has lots of properties, things that are true about it, things that you can measure,

  618. things that actually define it as light.

  619. But darkness has no properties.

  620. Darkness has no properties.

  621. Why is that?

  622. Because darkness really, essentially, is the absence of light.

  623. Where you find darkness, you can say for certain, there is no property of light in this place.

  624. It's only when light comes into a dark place that the darkness is then ended, because that's

  625. one of the things that light does.

  626. The properties of light are properties that remove darkness.

  627. Wherever you shine a light into darkness, the effect is that the darkness is done away with.

  628. And that's really so interesting when you come to think of what Jesus is saying here.

  629. I am the light of the world.

  630. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

  631. In other words, he's really saying it is possible, and indeed it's true, that people walk in darkness.

  632. He means spiritual and moral darkness because they don't have the light of Jesus in their lives.

  633. And it doesn't matter how well constructed their life may be.

  634. It doesn't matter how much they may live a decent and high-quality moral life.

  635. It doesn't matter how much they might have achieved in society.

  636. What Jesus is saying is, whoever follows me will not walk in darkness.

  637. And by implication, whoever does not follow him is walking in darkness.

  638. We need the light of Jesus in order to avoid walking in the darkness or to be delivered from the darkness

  639. that is naturally true of every one of us.

  640. So, two things.

  641. First of all, Jesus as the light of the world.

  642. You remember in 1 John 1, verse 5, that John begins that first epistle that he wrote by…

    1 John 1:5

  643. In chapter 1, verse 5, he gives a definition there of God.

  644. God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

  645. And you come to John's gospel, and you discover that Jesus is the light of the world,

  646. and that he's the light of the world as God, because Jesus is God.

  647. In other words, what we remember at this time of year in terms of the Christmas story,

  648. whatever term we use, and it's not just at Christmastime we remember it,

  649. Jesus, the Son of God, coming into the world, the Son of God, taking our human nature to himself,

  650. joining it to himself, working the work that the gospel tells us about,

  651. especially culminating in the cross and in his resurrection.

  652. That is God.

  653. That is the light that God has always been.

  654. And he's come into the world in the person of Jesus,

  655. not just a human being that he chose to represent him,

  656. but a human nature that he joined to his own divine person,

  657. the Son of God.

  658. Or as John puts it in the beginning of the gospel here,

  659. the Word which was with God, and the Word was God.

  660. Light reveals itself.

  661. God revealed himself in the person of Jesus.

  662. God is light.

  663. The light came into the world in the person of Jesus

  664. to lighten up the darkness for us,

  665. to deliver us from darkness.

  666. That's essentially what is in this definition

  667. that Jesus is saying,

  668. I am the light of the world.

  669. Now, the context here is interesting.

  670. As I said, you go back to the previous chapter as well, in fact,

  671. and on into chapter 9.

  672. And in verse 37 of the previous chapter 7,

  673. you find on the last day of the feast,

  674. the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out,

  675. If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.

  676. And you have to follow that right through into chapter 9

  677. because it's the same incident, really,

  678. that you've got different aspects of brought before you.

  679. And the interesting thing there, the important thing,

  680. is that the feast there was the Feast of Tabernacles,

  681. an annual event for Israel,

  682. which followed through into the days of Jesus.

  683. And during that time,

  684. the practice was they would actually light up

  685. four gigantic candelabras,

  686. you might say they were,

  687. or four gigantic chandeliers, you might call them,

  688. but out in the open,

  689. massive, massive things filled with lights.

  690. And we're told that the light from these four giant lights

  691. would actually go out and flood the whole town with light.

  692. And you can imagine Jesus in that context

  693. and with that background and in these circumstances

  694. and with all that going on,

  695. standing up and saying,

  696. I am the light of the world.

  697. Here is Jesus saying,

  698. these lights that you are seeing,

  699. they're brilliant lights,

  700. they're shining up the town,

  701. the whole city is actually invaded by this light

  702. and covered by this light.

  703. But I am the light of the world.

  704. And whoever follows me will not walk in darkness,

  705. but have the light of life.

  706. So the incarnation, as we call it,

  707. the coming of the Son of God into the world,

  708. the Christmas story,

  709. it's about the light that God is

  710. in the person of Jesus, His Son,

  711. coming into this world

  712. so that He now is the light of the world

  713. and that those who follow Him

  714. should not walk in darkness,

  715. but have the light of life.

  716. You'll find back in the Old Testament

  717. such verses as, for example,

  718. you find in Isaiah chapter 9,

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  719. we quote them very often,

  720. or you'll find them maybe

  721. on your Christmas cards as well.

  722. If you come to have Christmas cards,

  723. you'll find such verses as this

  724. in chapter 9, verse 2,

  725. the people who walked in darkness

  726. have seen a great light.

  727. Those who dwelt in the land of deep darkness,

  728. on them has light shined.

  729. And you go down through the chapter,

  730. you come to verse 6,

  731. for unto us a child is born,

  732. to us a son is given,

  733. the government shall be upon his shoulder,

  734. and his name shall be called Wonderful,

  735. Counselor, Mighty God,

  736. Everlasting Father,

  737. Prince of Peace, and so on.

  738. That is obviously a prophecy

  739. about the Lord Jesus Christ.

  740. In Matthew 4, verse 16,

    Matthew 4:16

  741. that passage from Isaiah is quoted

  742. in respect to Jesus being born into the world,

  743. Jesus being the light of the world.

  744. Here is John saying the same thing,

  745. I am the light of the world.

  746. Friends, there is no other light

  747. that is adequate to meet

  748. the requirements of the darkness.

  749. Our world has so much in it today,

  750. that fills us with almost a sense of despair.

  751. Our own land has so much in it

  752. that you can attribute to the works of darkness,

  753. to the work,

  754. to the mind of darkness,

  755. to the mindset of darkness.

  756. What is going to scatter that darkness,

  757. that moral and spiritual darkness?

  758. Those things that we know are contrary,

  759. so much to the Word of God,

  760. so much to the Word as a light to our feet.

  761. So many attempts made,

  762. even on the part of those in government,

  763. to extinguish the light of the world,

  764. to extinguish the light of the gospel,

  765. to extinguish the moral and spiritual light

  766. that's provided for us in Jesus Christ,

  767. in the preaching of the gospel,

  768. in the emphasis of Jesus alone being the way,

  769. the truth and the life that leads us to God,

  770. that leads us to salvation.

  771. And the only antidote to that darkness

  772. and to these movements of darkness

  773. is the light of the world,

  774. is the blessing of the gospel,

  775. is Jesus coming to show Himself

  776. as the light of the world.

  777. Because there is no alternative

  778. to lighten up our path.

  779. There's nothing in between,

  780. morally and spiritually,

  781. there's nothing in between

  782. darkness and light,

  783. the light that Jesus is.

  784. You don't find shades of truth.

  785. You don't find penumbras, if you like,

  786. in terms of moral or spiritual attributes.

  787. There is light in the darkness.

  788. And if we're not in the darkness,

  789. we're in the light and vice versa.

  790. I am, he says,

  791. the light of the world.

  792. But then he talks about following Him.

  793. Whoever follows me

  794. will not walk in the darkness,

  795. but will have the light of life.

  796. Well, following the light,

  797. obviously following Jesus.

  798. What does that mean?

  799. How do we come to follow Jesus?

  800. What is it to come to know Him

  801. as the light of our life,

  802. so that we will have what he calls

  803. the light of life?

  804. Well, John's gospel actually tells us

  805. in many ways what that involves.

  806. And we don't need to go out with

  807. John's gospel for our study today

  808. to see the answer to the question,

  809. what is involved in following Jesus

  810. as the light of the world?

  811. Well, there's first of all,

  812. coming to Him.

  813. Let me just cast your mind back,

  814. if you follow me through,

  815. and just look up chapter 3 with me just now,

  816. chapter 3 and verse 21.

  817. We can read from verse 19.

  818. John chapter 3, verse 19.

    John 3:19

  819. This is the judgment.

  820. The light has come into the world,

  821. and people loved the darkness

  822. rather than the light,

  823. because their deeds were evil.

  824. For everyone who does wicked things

  825. hates the light,

  826. and does not come to the light,

  827. lest his deeds should be exposed.

  828. But whoever does what is through

  829. comes to the light,

  830. so that it may be clearly seen

  831. that his deeds have been carried out

  832. in God.

  833. Now, you can see the two

  834. contrasting groups there

  835. that are mentioned,

  836. those who come to the light

  837. and those who don't come to the light.

  838. And there's a little explanation

  839. as to why it is some come to the light

  840. and why it is some don't come to the light.

  841. And indeed, you'll find

  842. something like that illustrated

  843. in the natural world as well.

  844. There are different creatures

  845. that help to illustrate

  846. that very point for us.

  847. If you light a lamp or something outside,

  848. especially on a nice evening,

  849. when it comes to darkness,

  850. you'll find a lot of moths

  851. attracted to that light.

  852. Light attracts the moths.

  853. They come to it.

  854. They flutter around it for ages.

  855. But if you have

  856. a creature like a cockroach,

  857. and cockroaches are scurrying about

  858. in the darkness of a room,

  859. and when you put the light on,

  860. what do the cockroaches do?

  861. They scurry back somewhere

  862. for cover away from the light.

  863. I'm not saying that.

  864. Don't think that there are cockroaches

  865. in the moths,

  866. not as far as I know,

  867. but that's the property,

  868. and that's what cockroaches do

  869. and creatures like that.

  870. As soon as the light goes on,

  871. the cockroach just makes its way

  872. into somewhere

  873. where it can hide in the darkness.

  874. As soon as the light comes on,

  875. the moth is attracted to the light

  876. and comes to the light.

  877. That's how it is

  878. in our human life as well.

  879. That's what Jesus is saying here,

  880. what John is saying in chapter 3,

  881. as we've read.

  882. Whoever does truth

  883. comes to the light,

  884. that his deeds may be clearly seen

  885. that they are carried out in God.

  886. Everyone who does wicked things

  887. hates the light

  888. and does not come to the light,

  889. lest his deeds should be exposed.

  890. That's exactly how it is

  891. in your life and mine.

  892. Because when we come to think

  893. about our lives,

  894. when we come to think about

  895. our relationship with God,

  896. our relationship to God's truth,

  897. we are very much aware

  898. whether we're actually

  899. concerned or desirous

  900. of coming to God

  901. or else staying away from Him.

  902. What did Adam and Eve do

  903. once they fell,

  904. once they became sinners,

  905. once they became afraid of God?

  906. They went and tried to hide from Him.

  907. Instead of being out in the light

  908. like they were created,

  909. they wanted somewhere dark,

  910. somewhere to hide,

  911. somewhere away from God

  912. if it were possible,

  913. which it wasn't.

  914. But that's our natural human heart.

  915. That's our natural human desire

  916. to be away from the light,

  917. to actually have our deeds

  918. kept, as it were,

  919. away from the eye of God,

  920. from the verdict of God,

  921. from the declaration of God

  922. as to what we're like

  923. and how He sees us.

  924. But God is light.

  925. And whatever is true

  926. of your life and my life,

  927. God is seeing it anyway

  928. whether we try to hide it

  929. from Him or not.

  930. And sometimes we're experts

  931. at hiding things

  932. from other people.

  933. We cannot hide things from God

  934. because He is that eternal light

  935. that shines in every way

  936. into our life

  937. to discover what's there

  938. in our lives.

  939. But here we are.

  940. Whoever does the truth,

  941. John is saying,

  942. comes to the light

  943. that his deeds may be made manifest,

  944. that they may be made clear

  945. that they are in God.

  946. Now, how do we come?

  947. How do we come to God

  948. as the light?

  949. Well, we come to God

  950. as the light

  951. because Jesus,

  952. as the light,

  953. shines into our hearts

  954. and shows us our need of Him.

  955. And He shows us

  956. that we are, in fact,

  957. darkness in ourselves,

  958. even if we think well

  959. of ourselves,

  960. as all of us,

  961. I'm sure, do naturally.

  962. But in terms of God's acceptance

  963. and God's approval,

  964. we need more than

  965. our own opinion.

  966. We need more than

  967. what other people

  968. might tell us.

  969. We need more than

  970. the philosophies of this world.

  971. We need to be right with God.

  972. So, we come to Him

  973. in repentance.

  974. We confess our sins.

  975. We pray for His forgiveness.

  976. We pray for His acceptance.

  977. We come to ask Him

  978. to shine more light

  979. into our lives,

  980. to show up what is there

  981. that still needs

  982. to be attended to.

  983. We want God's approval.

  984. We seek God's approval.

  985. So, how do we get

  986. God's approval?

  987. We come to Jesus

  988. as the light of the world.

  989. We come to ask Him

  990. to receive us,

  991. to forgive our sin,

  992. to cleanse us,

  993. not just to dress us up

  994. a little bit

  995. or to wash us here and there,

  996. to do some sort of

  997. repair job on us,

  998. but to make us

  999. into a new creation,

1000. to give us the life

  1001. that God Himself

  1002. approves of.

1003. We come to the light.

1004. We come to the light

  1005. without confession.

  1006. And we are assured

1007. that God will not actually

  1008. turn us back.

  1009. Chapter 12

  1010. also has a reference

  1011. to the light

  1012. and is a point

  1013. that we can make

  1014. in relation to

  1015. what we're saying

  1016. just now.

  1017. In chapter 12,

  1018. verse 35,

  1019. I love the sound

  1020. of these turning pages,

  1021. you know,

  1022. because it shows

  1023. that you're following

  1024. what's being said

  1025. and there's nothing better

  1026. for a preacher

  1027. than to hear

  1028. an audience

  1029. or a congregation

  1030. turning the pages

  1031. and following

  1032. the way that

  1033. we're trying to

1034. unfold the truth to you.

  1035. So chapter 12

  1036. and verse 35,

  1037. you can see how

  1038. the light appears

  1039. there as well

  1040. where Jesus,

  1041. now this is coming

  1042. to the point

  1043. in John's gospel

  1044. where Jesus' public ministry

1045. is coming to an end.

  1046. From now on,

1047. He's just going to be

  1048. speaking mostly

  1049. to His disciples,

  1050. but His public ministries,

  1051. public declarations

1052. are almost at an end.

1053. And bear that in mind

  1054. when He says,

  1055. Jesus said to them,

1056. the light is among you

1057. for a little while longer.

1058. Walk while you have the light,

  1059. lest darkness overtake you.

1060. The one who walks in darkness

  1061. does not know

  1062. where he's going.

1063. While you have the light,

  1064. believe in the light

  1065. that you may become

  1066. the sons of light.

1067. What a great text that is.

1068. It almost explains itself to us.

1069. While you have the light,

  1070. believe in the light

  1071. that you may become

  1072. the sons of light.

  1073. In other words,

1074. there's the light of the world

  1075. saying,

  1076. believe in me,

  1077. trust in me,

  1078. come to me,

1079. give your life to me,

  1080. become lights

  1081. by trusting in me,

  1082. receive the life

1083. that I have to give you.

1084. And so you will become

  1085. the children of light

1086. or the sons of light.

  1087. It's exactly what

1088. you have here in our text

  1089. in chapter 8.

  1090. Whoever follows me

1091. will not walk in darkness,

  1092. but will have

  1093. the light of life.

  1094. So you follow Him

  1095. by first of all

  1096. coming to Him.

  1097. But that's only

1098. the beginning of the journey.

  1099. You then follow Him

  1100. as the light

  1101. that Jesus is

1102. when you've come to Him.

  1103. That light then

  1104. follows you

1105. into the journey of life,

1106. the journey of your life

  1107. through this world.

  1108. That's what He means

  1109. by walk.

  1110. You walk

  1111. after the light

  1112. that Jesus is.

  1113. You follow Him.

  1114. You live life

  1115. by His terms,

  1116. in other words.

  1117. You regard Him

  1118. as the way,

  1119. the truth,

  1120. and the life.

  1121. And you're concerned

1122. to build up your life

  1123. by more and more

  1124. being like Himself.

  1125. I'm old enough now

  1126. to remember

1127. when there were no streetlights.

  1128. Some of you

  1129. are perhaps

  1130. as old as that

  1131. or even older,

  1132. but I remember

  1133. walking home in tongue

  1134. before there were

  1135. any streetlights

  1136. whatsoever there.

  1137. And although

1138. there was an outside light,

  1139. well, eventually

1140. there was an outside light

  1141. at our house,

1142. but if I was walking up

1143. that final part of the road,

  1144. there was simply

  1145. no streetlights whatsoever.

  1146. And it's hard

  1147. for young folks

  1148. to imagine nowadays

  1149. what it's like

  1150. without streetlights.

  1151. It's darkness.

  1152. And walking up

1153. that part of the road,

  1154. my native village,

  1155. honestly,

  1156. seriously,

  1157. many a time

1158. I was going like this

  1159. sideways

  1160. to just work out

  1161. where is the ditch?

  1162. So that I wouldn't

1163. actually walk into the ditch

  1164. and then finding out,

  1165. oh, there's the ditch,

1166. so take a step back,

1167. go forward another few steps.

  1168. And eventually

  1169. you'd reach the house

  1170. and you'd come to

  1171. where the light

  1172. outside the house was.

  1173. But that's

  1174. when there's no streetlights,

  1175. when there's no light,

1176. but when there's just darkness,

  1177. you don't know

  1178. where you're going.

  1179. You're fumbling about

  1180. in the darkness.

1181. You're trying to make your way,

  1182. hopefully,

  1183. by the way

  1184. that you yourself

  1185. think best.

  1186. And that's what it's like

1187. in our human life as well.

  1188. It's so easy

  1189. to stray

  1190. off the verge

  1191. that keeps you safe,

  1192. straying onto

  1193. where the darkness is.

  1194. So easy

  1195. just to accept

  1196. the darkness

  1197. for what it is

  1198. and say,

  1199. well,

1200. this is how I've always been.

  1201. And even though

  1202. you're not right

  1203. with God,

  1204. it's all too easy

1205. to let the evil one,

  1206. the dark power,

  1207. tell you,

  1208. it's all right.

  1209. You've managed so far.

1210. You don't need to become religious.

1211. You don't need to actually

  1212. follow Jesus

  1213. the way other people

  1214. are following Jesus.

1215. That's all right for them.

1216. But just listen to what Jesus

  1217. is saying.

1218. I am the light of the world.

  1219. Whoever follows me

1220. will not walk in darkness.

1221. You need to follow him

  1222. or else you're walking

  1223. in darkness.

1224. And I have to put that

  1225. to my life.

1226. You have to put that

  1227. to yourself.

  1228. The safe way

  1229. through life

  1230. is the way

  1231. that follows Jesus.

  1232. The way that has

  1233. your life

  1234. in his hands

  1235. in him

  1236. as the light.

  1237. Psalm 27,

  1238. we sang together,

  1239. begins,

  1240. the Lord

  1241. is my light

  1242. and my saving health.

  1243. The Lord

  1244. is my light.

  1245. Not my own ingenuity.

  1246. Not what somebody

  1247. else tells me.

  1248. Not what the philosophy

  1249. of some other religion

  1250. says.

  1251. Not a mixture

  1252. of all kinds

  1253. of beliefs

  1254. and somehow or other

  1255. that provides me

  1256. a safe way.

  1257. No, he says,

  1258. I am the light

  1259. of the world.

  1260. Whoever follows me

  1261. will not walk

  1262. in darkness

  1263. but will have

  1264. the light of life.

  1265. And you know,

  1266. some people might be,

  1267. maybe yourself today,

  1268. might be afraid

  1269. to take that step.

  1270. You might be afraid

  1271. to just step

  1272. into the light

  1273. if you like

  1274. and begin

  1275. to follow Jesus

  1276. and to do so

  1277. meaningfully

  1278. and fully

  1279. and openly.

  1280. I once read

  1281. about a young girl

  1282. whose father

  1283. was a lighthouse keeper

  1284. way back

  1285. in the old days

  1286. when lighthouse keepers

  1287. were required

  1288. to live in lighthouses

1289. and she had a little lamp

  1290. herself

  1291. that her father

  1292. had given her

1293. so that when they were

  1294. going to go back

  1295. upstairs through

  1296. the lighthouse,

  1297. of course,

  1298. the stairs wind round

  1299. so very quickly

  1300. her father disappeared

  1301. as he went ahead

1302. of her with his light

  1303. and she was following

1304. with her own little light

1305. and she began to panic

  1306. when her father

  1307. went round the corner

  1308. as he went up

  1309. the round stairs

  1310. and she said,

  1311. Dad, Dad,

  1312. I can't see you.

  1313. And he said,

  1314. it's okay.

  1315. The light you've got

  1316. is enough

  1317. for each step.

1318. Just look at each step

1319. as you carry your lamp

1320. and you can go on

  1321. safely up the stairs.

  1322. That's what God

  1323. is telling you today.

1324. The light you have today

  1325. is sufficient

1326. for the steps of today.

  1327. Don't try and live

  1328. tomorrow today.

1329. Don't try and go ahead

  1330. of yourself

  1331. and all the fears

  1332. that that will engender

  1333. in your own thinking.

1334. How am I going to manage this?

1335. How am I going to manage that?

1336. How is this going to work out?

1337. How is that going to work out?

1338. Here's the light for today.

  1339. Here is Jesus

1340. for you to follow today.

  1341. And whatever steps

  1342. or step you might

  1343. have to take today,

  1344. don't look to tomorrow.

  1345. Look to the light

  1346. that he is

  1347. and you'll find

1348. that he's more than adequate

  1349. for the steps

1350. you need to take today.

1351. I am the light of the world.

  1352. Whoever follows me

1353. will not walk in darkness.

  1354. But he says,

1355. will have the light of life.

  1356. In other words,

1357. the light which consists in life,

1358. the life that Jesus gives

1359. is here compared to a light.

  1360. So, you know,

  1361. that opens up

  1362. a whole new area

  1363. of study for us.

  1364. We don't have time

1365. at all to go into it just now.

1366. But it's the area of truth

  1367. that speaks about Christians,

  1368. the followers of Jesus

  1369. themselves being light.

  1370. And you remember

  1371. that's how Jesus spoke,

  1372. Matthew 5, 14,

1373. you are the light of the world.

  1374. A city set on a hill

  1375. cannot be hidden.

1376. Neither do people light a candle

1377. and put it under a covering,

  1378. but on a candlestick

1379. so that it gives out its light.

  1380. Here is Jesus saying,

1381. when you come to know me

1382. as the light of your life,

  1383. your life is transformed

1384. into being a light as well.

1385. And this world out there

1386. needs not just the light of Jesus

1387. as the light of the world,

1388. but the light of Jesus

  1389. in human lives

  1390. to make them,

  1391. you and I,

  1392. lights by which people

1393. will see Jesus for themselves.

1394. They don't read their Bibles.

1395. They don't come to church.

1396. They don't know the gospel.

1397. Many people out there today

1398. in the darkness of sin

1399. and of the ways of sin,

1400. how are they going to find

  1401. light for their lives?

1402. They're not going to find it in church.

1403. They don't come to church,

  1404. though we want them

  1405. to come to church.

1406. They don't know the gospel.

1407. They don't read their Bibles.

1408. So they have to see that light

1409. in your life and mine.

1410. And if your life and my life

1411. is not a light for them,

1412. then they are going to stay

  1413. in the darkness

  1414. unless God miraculously comes

1415. to change it for them.

1416. So the question you see today

  1417. is not so much,

1418. well, there is this question,

  1419. do I know Jesus

1420. as the light of my life,

1421. as the light of the world?

1422. Is the light of the world

1423. shining in my life today?

1424. Have I come to trust Him?

1425. Have I come to know

1426. the Christmas story for myself

1427. in my own inward soul

1428. so that I'm no longer

  1429. walking in darkness,

1430. so that I have the light of life?

  1431. That's the first thing.

  1432. The second thing,

1433. and it is a challenge for me

  1434. and for you too,

  1435. is my life.

1436. Is our life as a congregation?

  1437. Because Jesus there was,

  1438. in Matthew,

  1439. talking to a crowd

  1440. of His disciples

1441. in the Sermon on the Mount,

1442. you are the light of the world.

  1443. There's our concern today

1444. as we come to approach Christmas

1445. and give out the Christmas story,

1446. but here must be our concern

  1447. always, every day,

1448. every moment of every year

  1449. that goes by,

  1450. that as a people

  1451. and as individuals,

1452. we will prove to be

1453. the light of the world,

1454. the light that shines out

  1455. by which people

  1456. see the Lord

  1457. and by which people

  1458. will come

  1459. by His blessing

  1460. to follow Him.

  1461. I am

1462. the light of the world.

  1463. Whoever follows me

1464. will not walk in darkness,

1465. but will have the light

  1466. of life.

1467. To use his own words,

  1468. come to the light,

  1469. follow the light,

  1470. be light for Him.

1471. May God bless these thoughts

  1472. on His Word

  1473. and bless His Word

  1474. to us again today.

  1475. We're going to conclude

1476. by singing in Psalm 36.

  1477. Psalm 36,

1478. and the Sing Psalms version again.

  1479. Verses 5 to 9

1480. to the tune London New.

  1481. That's on page 44.

1482. Your steadfast love is great,

  1483. O Lord,

  1484. it reaches heaven high.

  1485. Your faithfulness is wonderful,

  1486. extending to the sky.

1487. And so on to verse 9,

  1488. which speaks about God

1489. being a source of life

  1490. and light for us.

1491. They feast within your house

  1492. and drink from streams

  1493. of your delight.

  1494. What with you

1495. is the source of life

  1496. in your light.

  1497. we see light.

  1498. Verses 5 to 9

1499. as we stand to sing.

1500. Your steadfast love is great,

  1501. O Lord,

  1502. it reaches heaven high.

  1503. Your faithfulness is wonderful,

  1504. your faithfulness is wonderful,

  1505. extending to the sky.

  1506. Your righteousness is wonderful,

1507. your righteousness is very great,

  1508. like light.

  1509. Your righteousness is great,

1510. like mountains high and steep.

  1511. Your righteousness is great,

  1512. like ocean and earth,

1513. O man and peace to be.

  1514. O Lord,

1515. my precious is your steadfast love,

  1516. what confidence it brings.

1517. For the name of you is Jesus,

  1518. O enseñ and louvers,

1519. O platformer did you pray e'en the sky?

  1520. O nuestra fields,

  1521. who areως hot?

  1522. how are you?

  1523. as you thunder,

1524. the soul of your eyeミー,

1525. The shadow of your wings.

1526. They feast with the new eyes and trail

1527. From saints of pure delight.

1528. For with you is the source of life

1529. In your light we see light.

1530. If you let me get to the main door, please, after the benediction.

1531. Now may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father,

1532. and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you now and evermore. Amen.

  1533. Amen, Father.

  1534. Amen.

  1535. Amen, Father.

  1536. Amen.

  1537. Amen.

  1538. Amen.

  1539. Thank you.

  1540. Thank you.
