  1. Begin our worship this evening by singing to God's praise in Psalm 84, in the Scottish

  2. Psalter version, Psalm 84, the tunes Tramps and Hawkers.

  3. We're going to sing from verse 1 to verse 6.

  4. How lovely is thy dwelling place, O Lord of hosts, to me the tabernacles of thy grace,

  5. how pleasant, Lord, they be.

  6. My thirsty soul longs vehemently, yea, faints thy courts to see.

  7. My very heart and flesh cry out, O living God, for thee.

  8. We sing verse 1 to 6 to God's praise.

  9. How lovely is thy dwelling place, O Lord of hosts, to me.

  10. The tabernacles of thy grace, thy blessed Lord, they be.

  11. My thirsty soul longs vehemently, yea, faints thy courts to see.

  12. My very heart and flesh cry out, O living God, for thee.

  13. To behold the smile, O thy devout, and her tender rest.

  14. The swallow also for herself, and purchase it amidst.

  15. In thy long waters, where she say, her young ones forth may bring.

  16. O our almighty Lord of hosts, who art my God and King.

  17. Blessed are they in thy house, and dwell, may ever give thee praise.

  18. Blessed is the man who strength thou art, in whose heart are thy ways.

  19. What Makes thy much peopleop In the Franks public.

  20. Nor be a heavenly book of Message in Caesar, be where she tells me.

  21. By thy poem's hearing.

  22. Nor will thyUNT you falleth, that...

  23. Nor shall be Cummings.

  24. ...

  25. What Pharise driest, that...

  26. ...

  27. Or shall be conclusions, the Word of thee.

  28. Let's bow our heads together and come to God in prayer.

  29. Let us pray.

  30. Lord our God, our Father in heaven,

  31. as we come in worship of you, in adoration of you,

  32. we thank you that we come,

  33. lifting up our voices in praise to you

  34. and seeking that you will meet with us in our time of worship,

  35. that we will come and behold your beauty,

  36. your glory in our midst,

  37. that through your word and through your spirit,

  38. you will minister to us in all our needs,

  39. that you will come and remind us, Lord,

  40. that we are so dependent upon you,

  41. but that you are a God who is able to lavish upon us,

  42. grace upon grace.

  43. And we thank you for the way that you remind us of that so often,

  44. of your great faithfulness towards us,

  45. and that we pray, Lord, that we may come

  46. and meet with you anew this evening

  47. and come with thirsty souls,

  48. longing to meet with you

  49. and to know that we have been with God,

  50. that we have been in your presence.

  51. And we pray, Lord,

  52. that you will satisfy us through your word,

  53. that you will give us the rest

  54. and the peace that even the psalmist speaks of

  55. in the psalm that we've sung together.

  56. And blessed are they in my house that dwell,

  57. they ever give thee praise.

  58. May that be our song and our portion

  59. this evening anew,

  60. that we will come to praise your great and glorious name.

  61. So we thank you that you are a God who is living,

  62. a God who is worthy of all our worship,

  63. a God who is real,

  64. a God who no matter what the world might say about you,

  65. who will so easily dismiss you or cast you away

  66. or speak a word against you.

  67. We thank you, Lord,

  68. that we come to the one who is our hope,

  69. our salvation,

  70. and our security.

  71. We thank you for your word

  72. and how it constantly builds us up,

  73. that whenever we feel discouraged or afraid

  74. or whether we are full of thanksgiving and praise,

  75. we can come to your word

  76. and there find a word that speaks and ministers to us.

  77. It reminds us of the hope that we have

  78. in our Lord Jesus Christ,

  79. a hope that we can never be taken away from us,

  80. a hope that is our true security.

  81. You're the one who is our refuge and our strength,

  82. an ever-present aid.

  83. We thank you for that constant nature,

  84. that you are unchanging and unchangeable,

  85. and that though we change in this world,

  86. that we ever move on in this world

  87. and that time never stands still for us,

  88. even as we come and approach the end of another year.

  89. We reflect on it, Lord,

  90. and just see how quickly our days and our years will go by.

  91. But we pray, Lord,

  92. that we will not just look back,

  93. but that you will enable us and help us

  94. to look forward to

  95. and to consider the days that lie ahead of us,

  96. even in the uncertainty and unknown nature of them.

  97. We pray then,

  98. thank you that you have numbered each of them,

  99. that they are known unto you.

  100. And we pray, Lord,

  101. that you will help us to number our days

  102. and to look to you as the one who holds our eternal destiny,

  103. that you are the one, Lord,

  104. who we can look to,

  105. who will guide us in the paths of life divine.

  106. And we pray, Lord,

  107. that you will indeed lead each of us on the right path.

  108. For we know,

  109. as your word says,

  110. that there is a broad road that many are on,

  111. but that road,

  112. as we are told,

  113. it leads to destruction.

  114. But we thank you for the narrow way,

  115. the way,

  116. although there may be few on it,

  117. the way that leads to life everlasting.

  118. And we pray that your word

  119. will minister to our hearts

  120. anew this evening,

  121. that you will speak to us

  122. through your word

  123. and help us to put our confidence

  124. and our trust

  125. in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  126. as we heard already today,

  127. the one who is the light of this world,

  128. who is able to dispel the darkness of it

  129. and who is able to guide us in these paths.

  130. We pray, O Lord,

  131. that we will indeed again see Jesus

  132. and know him as our Lord

  133. and as our Savior.

  134. May he become ever more precious to us

  135. as we look around us

  136. in the chaos of this world.

  137. May we be able to fix our eyes on Jesus continually

  138. and remind ourselves day by day

  139. and even hour by hour

  140. that in Christ

  141. we have all that we need for life

  142. and for eternity.

  143. So we ask your blessing on us

  144. as a people,

  145. as a congregation here

  146. and those tuning in online as well.

  147. We thank you for one another.

  148. We thank you, Lord,

  149. that we are able to encourage

  150. and to help one another

  151. and especially in times of need.

  152. We are so aware just now, Lord,

  153. of the many who are grieving

  154. over the loss of loved ones

  155. or who are anxious over loved ones

  156. and we commit them, Lord,

  157. into your care

  158. and into your keeping.

  159. We thank you, Lord,

  160. for the one another's

  161. we read of in Scripture.

  162. So many passages and texts

  163. that remind us to pray for one another,

  164. to encourage one another,

  165. to build up one another.

  166. And we pray that we will seek

  167. to do all these things for each other.

  168. in praying for one another, Lord,

  169. we thank you for the strength

  170. and blessing that there is in that,

  171. that there is unity in the body of Christ

  172. so that when one feels the pain,

  173. the whole body suffers.

  174. And yet, O Lord,

  175. we have the strength in the body too

  176. that will give healing and help

  177. to those who are feeling a weakness.

  178. So, Lord,

  179. may you draw near to all in need,

  180. whether it is in grief,

  181. whether it's in ill health,

  182. whether it's in anxiety and worries

  183. that so many people maybe cannot see

  184. are hidden from the eyes of many,

  185. but, Lord, you know,

  186. and you know every need that we have.

  187. And so we pray, Lord,

  188. that you surround us and help us

  189. in all our times of need.

  190. We thank you that your word reminds us

  191. that you are the God of all comfort

  192. and that for every circumstance,

  193. every situation,

  194. that you have an answer for us,

  195. that you have a way to help,

  196. a way to uphold,

  197. a way to lift us up.

  198. And so we commit each other

  199. into your care at this time.

  200. We pray for our mission as a church too.

  201. We thank you, Lord,

  202. for not just instruction,

  203. but indeed the command

  204. that you give us in your word,

  205. that as a people,

  206. we are to be the light,

  207. salt and light of this world,

  208. that we are indeed to be sent out

  209. with your truth.

  210. And we pray, Lord,

  211. that you will help us,

  212. help us in all that we seek to do,

  213. whether it's with young or old or middle-aged,

  214. whatever we seek to do,

  215. whether it's in large groups

  216. or one-to-one.

  217. We pray, Lord,

  218. for words of wisdom.

  219. We pray, Lord,

  220. for encouragement and strength.

  221. We pray, Lord,

  222. when we face persecution

  223. or answers maybe

  224. from people that we don't expect

  225. or that even hurt us

  226. when we hear the gospel slandered,

  227. we pray that you will give us

  228. a boldness and a courage

  229. to continue to pray

  230. and to love those

  231. who even maybe despise us

  232. as your people

  233. or despise you as God

  234. and have no time for you,

  235. that you would give us

  236. love for those people,

  237. a love to seek the good for them

  238. that only you can give,

  239. to change their hearts,

  240. to change their ways.

  241. We ask, O Lord,

  242. for your goodness

  243. to be poured out upon us

  244. and upon all your church this day,

  245. far and wide,

  246. that the riches of your gospel

  247. will bear much fruit,

  248. that where your gospel is proclaimed,

  249. that there will be a call

  250. to your people

  251. that will build them up,

  252. that will encourage them,

  253. that will strengthen them,

  254. and no matter where they are,

  255. how many or how few

  256. they may be gathered,

  257. Lord,

  258. that you will surround your people

  259. and encourage them

  260. and strengthen them.

  261. We remember especially

  262. those who are persecuted,

  263. those who suffer for their faith,

  264. those who are maybe even living

  265. in fear throughout the world

  266. of what may come upon them

  267. for their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  268. We pray, Lord,

  269. that they will know

  270. you ministering to them

  271. and strengthen them

  272. in a very special way.

  273. And we pray, Lord,

  274. for your gospel to go out

  275. and convict those souls

  276. that lie in sin,

  277. those who are so bound

  278. in this world

  279. and so caught up

  280. in the ways of this world,

  281. some of it so evil

  282. as we see it around us

  283. in war and terror

  284. and so many acts

  285. of violence in our world,

  286. but others just blinded

  287. by the God of this world

  288. and aware of their sins

  289. or unaware of the consequences

  290. of them.

  291. We pray for you

  292. to send your light forth

  293. and your truth

  294. with great power

  295. and with great conviction.

  296. We thank you

  297. that your word

  298. is ever powerful

  299. and ever able to save.

  300. And so we pray, Lord,

  301. for the power of your spirit

  302. to go forth even this day.

  303. Remember our nation

  304. at this time

  305. and indeed remember us

  306. as a people in the week ahead

  307. as we see the Christmas season

  308. and the holiday season

  309. coming upon us.

  310. We pray for schools

  311. and workplaces

  312. and all who will be taking holidays

  313. over this time

  314. in the midst of travel chaos

  315. and weather

  316. so inclement at times.

  317. We pray, Lord,

  318. for your safety

  319. and protection

  320. over all

  321. who will be traveling

  322. to and fro,

  323. whether it's coming home

  324. for Christmas

  325. or going away

  326. and visiting family

  327. and friends.

  328. We pray that you will protect us

  329. and keep us all

  330. and above all, Lord,

  331. that you will help us

  332. to remember

  333. the Lord Jesus

  334. in the midst of

  335. all that we see around us,

  336. the one who in the midst

  337. of all the lights

  338. that flash around us

  339. is the light

  340. greater than any,

  341. the one who is the light

  342. of the world.

  343. We pray, Lord,

  344. for that light

  345. to shine brightly

  346. in our midst.

  347. Remember our young people,

  348. we pray for the fellowship

  349. this evening

  350. and may your blessing

  351. be with us in that

  352. and for the schools

  353. as they close

  354. and the teachers

  355. and the students alike,

  356. Lord,

  357. we pray your blessing

  358. on each one

  359. and ask that you will

  360. go before them

  361. in all of their days

  362. as well.

  363. May you remember us

  364. then, Lord,

  365. and all who rule over us

  366. as a people

  367. as we continue

  368. to pray for our governments

  369. and our royal family.

  370. Again, we pray, Lord,

  371. that they will bow

  372. the knee to you,

  373. that they will come

  374. and honor you

  375. and worship you,

  376. something that seems

  377. maybe so far removed

  378. in our society today,

  379. but we know that

  380. in the blink of an eye

  381. that you can change hearts

  382. and we know

  383. even in our own hearts

  384. how you are able to change

  385. and so may you come

  386. into their hearts,

  387. into their lives

  388. and into the lives

  389. of our nation

  390. and indeed the world

  391. to know your power

  392. and to know your glory

  393. in the midst of us.

  394. We thank you

  395. that you have not left us,

  396. that you have not given us

  397. over to our own ways

  398. completely, Lord,

  399. but that you are there

  400. to be called upon

  401. so help us

  402. to call on your name

  403. and to come in faith,

  404. rejoicing that you hear

  405. and are able

  406. to answer our prayers.

  407. So, Lord,

  408. give us that faith

  409. to keep believing

  410. and keep praying

  411. and to go on

  412. in your strength

  413. as we ask it all

  414. with the forgiveness

  415. of our sins

  416. for remembering, Lord,

  417. how far short we fall

  418. so often

  419. that you will restore us

  420. and pardon us

  421. and build us up.

  422. We ask all this

  423. in the name of our Lord

  424. and Savior,

  425. Jesus Christ,

  426. for his glory now

  427. and always.

  428. Amen.

  429. We continue to worship God

  430. as we sing to his praise,

  431. this time in Psalm 63.

  432. In the Sing Psalms version,

  433. Psalm 63,

  434. the tune is Old 100.

  435. We're going to sing

  436. from verse 1 to verse 8.

  437. O God,

  438. you are my God alone.

  439. I seek your face

  440. with eagerness.

  441. My soul and body

  442. thirst for you

  443. in this dry weary wilderness.

  444. I've seen you

  445. in your holy place.

  446. Your power and glory

  447. held my gaze.

  448. Far better is your love

  449. than life

  450. and so my lips

  451. will sing your praise.

  452. We'll sing from verse 1 to 8

  453. to God's praise.

  454. Amen.

  455. Amen.

  456. O God,

  457. you are my God alone.

  458. I seek your face

  459. with neither hands.

  460. My soul and body

  461. thirst for you.

  462. In this dry weary wilderness.

  463. I've seen you

  464. in your holy place.

  465. Your power and glory

  466. held my gaze.

  467. Far better is your love

  468. and life.

  469. And so my lips

  470. will sing your praise.

  471. I'll bless you, Lord,

  472. throughout my life.

  473. and raise my heart

  474. to you in prayer.

  475. My joyfulness will sing your praise.

  476. My soul is filled with riches

  477. upon my bed.

  478. I'll bless you, Lord,

  479. upon my bed.

  480. I lie now,

  481. I lie now,

  482. and in my thoughts remember you.

  483. And in my thoughts remember you.

  484. I meditated throughout the night.

  485. I'm in your love,

  486. and in your love.

  487. I am in your love.

  488. I am in your love.

  489. I am in your love.

  490. I am in your love.

  491. I am in your love.

  492. because you are my help alone.

  493. I am in your love.

  494. I am in your love.

  495. I am in your love.

  496. And in your love.

  497. I am in your love.

  498. I am in your love.

  499. You hold me up with your right hand.

  500. To you, O God, my soul will cling.

  501. Well, we'll turn to read God's word.

  502. Two passages this evening.

  503. First of all, in the Gospel of Matthew.

  504. Matthew's Gospel, reading in chapter 25.

  505. We'll take up our reading at verse 31.

  506. Reading down to the end of the chapter,

  507. and then we turn to 2 Thessalonians chapter 1.

    2 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  508. Our first reading is in Matthew 25 and at verse 31.

  509. When the Son of Man comes in his glory and all the angels with him,

  510. then he will sit on his glorious throne.

  511. Before him will be gathered all the nations,

  512. and he will separate people one from another,

  513. as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

  514. And he will place the sheep on his right,

  515. but the goats on the left.

  516. Then the king will say to those on his right,

  517. Come, you who are blessed by my Father,

  518. inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

  519. For I was hungry, and you gave me food.

  520. I was thirsty, and you gave me drink.

  521. I was a stranger, and you welcomed me.

  522. I was naked, and you clothed me.

  523. I was sick, and you visited me.

  524. I was in prison, and you came to me.

  525. Then the righteous will answer him, saying,

  526. Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you,

  527. or thirsty and give you drink?

  528. And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you,

  529. or naked and clothe you?

  530. And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?

  531. And the king will answer them,

  532. Truly I say to you,

  533. as you did to one of the least of these, my brothers,

  534. you did it to me.

  535. Then he will say to those on his left,

  536. Depart from me, you cursed,

  537. into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

  538. For I was hungry, and you gave me no food.

  539. I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink.

  540. I was a stranger, and you did not welcome.

  541. Welcome me and naked, and you did not clothe me.

  542. Sick and in prison, and you did not visit me.

  543. Then they also will answer, saying,

  544. Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty,

  545. or a stranger, or naked or sick or in prison,

  546. and did not minister to you?

  547. Then he will answer them, saying,

  548. Truly I say to you,

  549. as you did not do it to one of these,

  550. the least of these you did not do it to me.

  551. And these will go away into eternal punishment,

  552. but the righteous into eternal life.

  553. Our second reading is in 2 Thessalonians,

  554. reading in chapter 1.

  555. We'll take up our reading at verse 5.

  556. 2 Thessalonians, chapter 1 at verse 5.

    2 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  557. Again, it's linked to the reading we had in Matthew,

  558. the day of the judgment of Christ.

  559. This is evidence of the righteous judgment of God,

  560. that you may be considered worthy of the kingdom of God,

  561. for which you are also suffering.

  562. Since indeed God considers it just to repay with affliction

  563. those who afflict you,

  564. and to grant relief to you who are afflicted,

  565. as well as to us,

  566. when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven

  567. with his mighty angels,

  568. and flaming fire,

  569. inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God,

  570. and on those who do not obey

  571. the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

  572. They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction,

  573. away from the presence of the Lord,

  574. and from the glory of his might,

  575. when he comes on that day,

  576. to be glorified in his saints,

  577. and to be marveled at among all who have believed,

  578. because our testimony to you was believed.

  579. To this end,

  580. we always pray for you,

  581. that our God may make you worthy of his calling,

  582. and may fulfill every resolve for good,

  583. and every work of faith by his power,

  584. so the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you,

  585. and you in him,

  586. according to the grace of our God,

  587. and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  588. Amen,

  589. and may God bless these readings from his word.

  590. We're going to sing again to God's praise.

  591. It's a change to the psalm on the notice sheet,

  592. which we already had this morning,

  593. but we're going to sing from Psalm 27,

  594. in the Sing Psalms version,

  595. and it's verse 9 to verse 14,

  596. page 32 of the psalm book,

  597. Psalm 27,

  598. at verse 9,

  599. in the Sing Psalms version,

  600. on the tune of Spore.

  601. O do not hide your face from me,

  602. and do not turn aside,

  603. your servant in your righteous wrath,

  604. for you have been my guide.

  605. O God,

  606. my saviour,

  607. leave me not,

  608. do not reject my plea,

  609. my parents may forsake me,

  610. Lord,

  611. but you will welcome me.

  612. Psalm 27,

    Psalms 27:9

  613. verse 9,

  614. down to the end of the psalm,

  615. and the Sing Psalms version.

  616. O do not hide your face from me,

  617. and do not turn aside,

  618. your servant in your righteous wrath,

  619. for you have been my guide.

  620. O God,

  621. O God,

  622. my saviour,

  623. leave me not,

  624. do not reject my plea,

  625. my feelings may forsake me,

  626. forsake me, Lord,

  627. but you will welcome me.

  628. Teach me, O Lord,

  629. how I should live,

  630. and lead me in your way,

  631. make strength my path,

  632. because my foes oppress me every day.

  633. Give me not over to the will of the evil and enemies,

  634. for my earth's right,

  635. to stunder me,

  636. and we have cruelty.

  637. Yet I am sure,

  638. that in this eye,

  639. God's goodness I will see.

  640. We call the Lord,

  641. be strong,

  642. take heart,

  643. for him we patiently.

  644. Well, we can turn back to our second reading in 2 Thessalonians.

    2 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  645. Chapter 1.

  646. We're going to look at this section that we read,

  647. verse 5 to verse 12,

  648. but in particular from the middle of verse 7 down to the end,

  649. where it speaks about the coming of the Lord Jesus,

  650. where Jesus is revealed from heaven,

  651. with his mighty angels and flaming fire,

  652. inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God,

  653. and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

  654. And so it goes on.

  655. It's a time of year when many people find themselves maybe counting down,

  656. counting down the days,

  657. whether it's counting down the days to the holiday coming,

  658. holiday starting.

  659. Many people are counting down the days till Christmas Day.

  660. And then we fast approach the end of this year.

  661. And people count down then towards the end of the year.

  662. And eventually you come to those last few seconds of the year,

  663. where you count down 10,

  664. 9,

  665. 8,

  666. and the bell rings,

  667. and you're into a new year.

  668. But as a reminder to us,

  669. just as time is constantly going on,

  670. how easy it is almost just to wish our days away.

  671. Counting down the days,

  672. but to what end?

  673. Where are we going?

  674. What's the destination we have in mind as all our days go past?

  675. In Psalm 90 verse 12,

    Psalms 90:12

  676. the psalmist says to us,

  677. teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts to wisdom.

  678. So instead of just counting down our days,

  679. wishing them away in some ways,

  680. instead we are to number our days that we may apply our hearts to wisdom.

  681. What does he mean by that?

  682. Well,

  683. he means that our days pass so quickly.

  684. The days,

  685. the months,

  686. the years,

  687. they pass so quickly.

  688. And as we approach the end of another year,

  689. we approach it in a way where we're on this journey,

  690. as we often say,

  691. through life.

  692. But what is the aim of our journey?

  693. If you go on a journey,

  694. so often you have a destination in mind,

  695. and you wait for the words to come,

  696. perhaps if you're sitting on a train,

  697. or if you're listening to your sat-nav guiding you along the way,

  698. to say you've reached your destination,

  699. or this is the final stop.

  700. And you know then maybe you've reached the place that you were hoping to arrive in.

  701. But as we look forward this time of year,

  702. what do we look forward to?

  703. And what is the destination that we are aiming for?

  704. That Jesus himself spoke of it in Matthew's gospel.

  705. There we read in Matthew 25.

  706. Those words that you hear of the final destination,

  707. it's either,

  708. come,

  709. you who are blessed by the Father,

  710. or depart from me,

  711. you who are cursed.

  712. He is speaking about two different destinations.

  713. The same as what Paul is speaking of here.

  714. As he writes to the Thessalonians,

  715. he is speaking about the two different destinations

  716. that we're going to think about this evening.

  717. Some years ago when we were in Dumfries,

  718. this time of year is Christmas time of year,

  719. when we had family coming to visit.

  720. One day they decided that they were going to go to Gretna,

  721. not too far away from Dumfries.

  722. And they were happy to go by themselves,

  723. that they knew roughly where they were going,

  724. but they had the sat-nav with them

  725. just to help them along the way.

  726. So they were going to the retail park out there.

  727. They put in the postcode for it,

  728. and off they went.

  729. They drove for some time,

  730. and then they were told

  731. that you have reached your destination.

  732. And they were on a road in the middle of nowhere

  733. under a bridge.

  734. They had arrived at their destination,

  735. but it wasn't the destination that they expected.

  736. Luckily for them,

  737. they weren't too far away

  738. from where they were aiming for.

  739. But it's a reminder to us

  740. that if we're listening to the wrong instructions,

  741. yes, we're being brought on a journey,

  742. and our destination may not be far off

  743. where we want to get,

  744. but it doesn't matter if it's just a mile,

  745. 10 miles, 100 miles,

  746. we're still not in the destination

  747. that we're looking for.

  748. And the Scripture reminds us

  749. that our destination,

  750. our desire should be

  751. to be with the Lord

  752. and not to get led down

  753. the wrong path.

  754. And so here,

  755. as Paul writes to the Thessalonians,

  756. he's writing to these Thessalonians

  757. who have much to be thankful for in God,

  758. but who are also enduring persecutions

  759. and afflictions,

  760. as it says in verse 4.

  761. They're suffering much difficulties

  762. on this journey through life.

  763. And on the other hand,

  764. the life and journey

  765. of the persecutors and the wicked,

  766. it seems in many ways easier

  767. and more pleasant.

  768. And the question can often arise,

  769. why is this so?

  770. But Paul is reminding them

  771. to keep in focus the Lord

  772. and the destination

  773. that he ultimately has in mind

  774. for his people,

  775. that with God,

  776. his plans will work out for good

  777. in the end

  778. because God is sovereign.

  779. And in the verses before us tonight,

  780. we're going to be shown

  781. the end outcome

  782. for both believers

  783. and unbelievers,

  784. where our journey destination ends.

  785. And the end,

  786. the ends couldn't be more different.

  787. We have before us

  788. the reality of heaven

  789. and the reality of hell.

  790. And it's heaven and hell

  791. as the Bible,

  792. the truth of God's word defines it.

  793. Not a heaven and hell

  794. of our own making

  795. or our own imagination.

  796. It is heaven and hell

  797. as the Lord presents before us.

  798. With a great challenge

  799. and the real seriousness

  800. of this matter.

  801. What is your final destination?

  802. As we journey,

  803. what is our direction?

  804. And where is our destination set for?

  805. That's what Paul wants us to consider.

  806. What is our final destination?

  807. Paul challenges us here

  808. in verse 8 to verse 12

  809. in particular.

  810. And we're going to look at these

  811. two destinations before us.

  812. First of all,

  813. we look at hell

  814. and the darkness of it.

  815. As we heard this morning,

  816. the difference between light

  817. and darkness

  818. is really what we see again

  819. before us here.

  820. The darkness

  821. and the torment of hell.

  822. And yet the light

  823. and the beauty of Christ

  824. and the hope

  825. of heaven.

  826. So first of all,

  827. we see hell

  828. and the darkness

  829. of it.

  830. And as we

  831. go into this,

  832. it's so important

  833. to see that

  834. as we speak

  835. of these places,

  836. it is not just

  837. a made-up place.

  838. It's not just something

  839. of the imagination

  840. of man.

  841. It's so important

  842. for us to realize that

  843. because the basis

  844. of both these destinations

  845. is what the Word of God

  846. teaches us.

  847. And the basis of them

  848. is,

  849. as we saw in Matthew

  850. and here

  851. in verse 7

  852. of 2 Thessalonians 1,

  853. it is the coming

  854. of the Lord Jesus.

  855. We're living in this world

  856. as if it's a permanent

  857. place of residence.

  858. But we're just

  859. passing through.

  860. This is just

  861. temporary.

  862. And so it's so important,

  863. it's vital

  864. what we do

  865. with our days

  866. in this world.

  867. And as the psalmist said,

  868. teach us

  869. to number our days

  870. that we may apply

  871. our hearts

  872. to wisdom.

  873. That we may seek

  874. and be challenged

  875. as to what is

  876. our ultimate

  877. destination.

  878. The Lord

  879. is coming.

  880. And very similar

  881. words were used

  882. by Jesus and Matthew

  883. and here by Paul

  884. when Jesus is revealed

  885. from heaven

  886. with his mighty angels.

  887. That day

  888. is coming.

  889. That moment

  890. is coming.

  891. And even though

  892. we count down

  893. the days

  894. and even the minutes

  895. and the seconds

  896. of this year,

  897. there's no guarantee

  898. for us

  899. that the Lord

  900. will not come

  901. even before then.

  902. So it again

  903. just reminds us

  904. of the importance

  905. of the now.

  906. The today

  907. as the scripture

  908. speaks of.

  909. The urgency

  910. of the gospel

  911. in light

  912. of heaven

  913. and hell.

  914. And we remember

  915. that no one

  916. taught on hell

  917. more than the Lord

  918. Jesus himself

  919. just as we read

  920. in Matthew.

  921. Some people

  922. have said that

  923. you know

  924. it's more important

  925. in this day and age

  926. that we

  927. just maybe forget

  928. about hell

  929. and don't speak

  930. about it.

  931. Show them the love

  932. of Christ.

  933. Don't try and

  934. scare them

  935. into heaven

  936. by teaching on hell.

  937. Just show the love

  938. of Christ.

  939. But it's important

  940. to have both.

  941. And as we think

  942. of the doctrine

  943. of hell

  944. and the reality

  945. of hell

  946. and we put that

  947. before ourselves,

  948. that is reminding us

  949. even maybe more

  950. greatly

  951. and truly

  952. the love

  953. of Christ.

  954. Of what he came

  955. to save us

  956. from.

  957. Of the love

  958. of God

  959. that gave us

  960. son,

  961. the love

  962. of Christ

  963. that gave

  964. his life

  965. to spare us

  966. the reality

  967. of hell

  968. for ourselves.

  969. And what it

  970. cost him

  971. was the giving

  972. of his very life.

  973. So it's so

  974. important

  975. that we hear

  976. the reality

  977. not just of heaven

  978. and the beauty

  979. of that

  980. but the reality

  981. of hell

  982. and the cursing,

  983. the darkness,

  984. the bitterness

  985. of that.

  986. Reverend

  987. Sinclair Ferguson

  988. once told a story

  989. from a number

  990. of years ago

  991. and he's told it

  992. of one royal princess

  993. who was coming

  994. out of a cathedral

  995. service in England

  996. and she spoke

  997. to the dean

  998. of the cathedral

  999. on the way out

  1000. and she asked

  1001. the dean

  1002. a question.

  1003. Is it true,

  1004. dean,

  1005. that there is

  1006. a place

  1007. called hell?

  1008. to which

  1009. apparently

  1010. the dean

  1011. replied,

  1012. madam,

  1013. the scriptures

  1014. say so.

  1015. Christian people

  1016. have always

  1017. believed so

  1018. and the church

  1019. of England

  1020. confesses so.

  1021. To which

  1022. the princess

  1023. is supposed to

  1024. have replied

  1025. saying,

  1026. and then

  1027. in God's name

  1028. why don't

  1029. you tell us?

  1030. why don't

  1031. you tell us

  1032. so?

  1033. The reality

  1034. of hell.

  1035. Hell is

  1036. an uncomfortable

  1037. subject

  1038. and for some

  1039. Christians it can

  1040. be an awkward

  1041. subject,

  1042. sometimes an

  1043. embarrassing

  1044. subject to talk

  1045. about.

  1046. We find it

  1047. difficult.

  1048. How can a

  1049. loving God

  1050. condemn anyone

  1051. in this way?

  1052. But it's about

  1053. seeing the

  1054. balance,

  1055. seeing both

  1056. that God,

  1057. yes there is

  1058. a place

  1059. for sinners

  1060. who do not

  1061. repent,

  1062. but the

  1063. reality too

  1064. is that

  1065. faith in

  1066. the Lord

  1067. Jesus Christ

  1068. is the only

  1069. thing that

  1070. can spare

  1071. us from

  1072. that darkness.

  1073. Avoiding

  1074. the subject,

  1075. it doesn't

  1076. make it

  1077. go away.

  1078. The reality

  1079. is always

  1080. there before

  1081. us.

  1082. So why

  1083. did Jesus

  1084. talk about

  1085. it so much?

  1086. Why did

  1087. Jesus often

  1088. speak about

  1089. this place

  1090. hell?

  1091. Because his

  1092. longing for

  1093. people was

  1094. to know

  1095. the truth,

  1096. the reality

  1097. of not

  1098. believing,

  1099. of rejecting

  1100. the gospel,

  1101. that without

  1102. him,

  1103. the saviour

  1104. of the world,

  1105. the reality

  1106. is eternal

  1107. destruction.

  1108. Why does

  1109. Paul address

  1110. it here to

  1111. the Thessalonians?

  1112. Again,

  1113. it's out of

  1114. his pastoral

  1115. love of

  1116. the people,

  1117. his great

  1118. concern for

  1119. them that

  1120. they would

  1121. realise what

  1122. a rejection

  1123. of Christ

  1124. means.

  1125. And why

  1126. do we

  1127. preach it?

  1128. Because we

  1129. all need to

  1130. know the

  1131. reality of

  1132. it, but

  1133. also the

  1134. way away

  1135. from it.

  1136. So as we

  1137. think of

  1138. hell as we

  1139. have it here

  1140. in verse

  1141. 7 to

  1142. verse 9,

  1143. there's three

  1144. things about

  1145. it that

  1146. we're

  1147. reminded of

  1148. here.

  1149. First of

  1150. all,

  1151. it's a

  1152. real place.

  1153. It's a

  1154. real place.

  1155. Don't just

  1156. take my

  1157. word for

  1158. it,

  1159. take Jesus'

  1160. word for

  1161. it.

  1162. Because

  1163. Jesus

  1164. presents it

  1165. so,

  1166. as a

  1167. real place.

  1168. Here in

  1169. verse 7

  1170. and 8,

  1171. we are told

  1172. that Jesus

  1173. will be

  1174. revealed to

  1175. bring vengeance

  1176. on those

  1177. who do

  1178. not know

  1179. God or

  1180. obey his

  1181. word.

  1182. He will

  1183. come to

  1184. judge.

  1185. And he's

  1186. fulfilling the

  1187. words of

  1188. warning that

  1189. he has

  1190. already given.

  1191. In

  1192. Matthew 7

    Matthew 7:13

  1193. verse 13,

  1194. it says,

  1195. they enter by

  1196. the narrow

  1197. gate, for

  1198. the gate is

  1199. wide and the

  1200. way is easy

  1201. that leads

  1202. to destruction.

  1203. And those

  1204. who enter

  1205. by it

  1206. are many.

  1207. Enter by

  1208. the narrow

  1209. gate.

  1210. Find your

  1211. way to

  1212. salvation,

  1213. not by

  1214. continuing on

  1215. the broad

  1216. way or

  1217. the wide

  1218. gate, as

  1219. he describes

  1220. it, that

  1221. leads to

  1222. destruction.

  1223. The two

  1224. destinations

  1225. presented by

  1226. Jesus, it's

  1227. a real

  1228. place.

  1229. And it begs

  1230. the question

  1231. of us,

  1232. what road

  1233. are you on?

  1234. What path

  1235. are you on?

  1236. What gate

  1237. are you going

  1238. through?

  1239. What is

  1240. the destination

  1241. that you

  1242. are on?

  1243. Jesus again

  1244. says in

  1245. Matthew 10

    Matthew 10:28

  1246. verse 28,

  1247. he says,

  1248. do not fear

  1249. those who

  1250. kill the

  1251. body, but

  1252. cannot kill

  1253. the soul.

  1254. Rather,

  1255. fear him

  1256. who can

  1257. destroy both

  1258. soul and

  1259. body in

  1260. hell.

  1261. He just

  1262. reminds us

  1263. so often,

  1264. it is a

  1265. real place.

  1266. As one

  1267. commentator

  1268. says,

  1269. this is

  1270. not the

  1271. imagination

  1272. of man.

  1273. These are

  1274. not the

  1275. words of

  1276. great

  1277. theologians

  1278. like

  1279. Jonathan

  1280. Edwards

  1281. or John

  1282. Calvin

  1283. or Augustine

  1284. or Paul

  1285. himself.

  1286. These are

  1287. the words

  1288. of Jesus

  1289. reminding us

  1290. of the

  1291. reality

  1292. of this

  1293. place,

  1294. that hell

  1295. is a

  1296. real

  1297. place.

  1298. there is

  1299. so many

  1300. people

  1301. afraid

  1302. of so

  1303. many

  1304. things

  1305. today.

  1306. We are

  1307. afraid

  1308. in the

  1309. world in

  1310. which we

  1311. live of

  1312. so much

  1313. that may

  1314. lie before

  1315. us,

  1316. but how

  1317. afraid are

  1318. we of

  1319. our eternal

  1320. destination

  1321. and the

  1322. reality

  1323. of this

  1324. place,

  1325. hell.

  1326. The second

  1327. thing we see

  1328. of this

  1329. place,

  1330. it's not

  1331. a place

  1332. to joke

  1333. about.

  1334. It's not

  1335. a place

  1336. to make

  1337. a joke

  1338. of.

  1339. When you

  1340. read these

  1341. words,

  1342. when Jesus

  1343. is revealed

  1344. from heaven

  1345. with his

  1346. mighty angels

  1347. in flaming

  1348. fire,

  1349. inflicting

  1350. vengeance on

  1351. those who

  1352. do not

  1353. know God

  1354. and on

  1355. those who

  1356. do not

  1357. obey the

  1358. gospel of

  1359. our Lord

  1360. Jesus,

  1361. they will

  1362. suffer the

  1363. punishment

  1364. of eternal

  1365. destruction.

  1366. It's not

  1367. a place

  1368. to joke

  1369. about.

  1370. You see

  1371. it so

  1372. often,

  1373. and it

  1374. becomes

  1375. more so

  1376. as the

  1377. days and

  1378. the years

  1379. go on,

  1380. that hell,

  1381. the devil,

  1382. the gospel,

  1383. it just

  1384. becomes the

  1385. butt of

  1386. all jokes.

  1387. The mocking

  1388. of the

  1389. Christian faith

  1390. and Christians

  1391. becomes more

  1392. and more.

  1393. It's amazing

  1394. how online,

  1395. you know,

  1396. for all it's

  1397. good,

  1398. now you see

  1399. so many people

  1400. just spouting

  1401. forth all

  1402. sorts,

  1403. and especially

  1404. when it

  1405. comes to

  1406. faith.

  1407. Faith,

  1408. the Christian

  1409. faith,

  1410. the butt

  1411. of all

  1412. jokes.

  1413. Jokes

  1414. have become

  1415. more and

  1416. more harsh

  1417. as the

  1418. days and

  1419. the years

  1420. go on.

  1421. It's almost

  1422. like there's

  1423. no filter

  1424. on people

  1425. now,

  1426. they'll just

  1427. say anything

  1428. when they

  1429. make mockery

  1430. of the

  1431. faith,

  1432. but you

  1433. just shudder

  1434. at what

  1435. you hear.

  1436. somebody was

  1437. just saying

  1438. recently that

  1439. they're part

  1440. of an

  1441. atheist group

  1442. in order

  1443. to save

  1444. Christians

  1445. from their

  1446. way of

  1447. thinking.

  1448. It's as if

  1449. this is their

  1450. mission,

  1451. to take

  1452. Christians

  1453. back from

  1454. all these

  1455. fairy tales

  1456. as they

  1457. will describe

  1458. them,

  1459. and to

  1460. bring them

  1461. back into

  1462. the real

  1463. world.

  1464. And you

  1465. just shudder

  1466. at that way

  1467. of thinking

  1468. when you

  1469. see the

  1470. reality of

  1471. what the

  1472. gospel teaches,

  1473. and what

  1474. the mocking

  1475. of God

  1476. will bring,

  1477. the punishment

  1478. that they

  1479. will suffer,

  1480. this eternal

  1481. destruction.

  1482. They don't

  1483. want to hear

  1484. it, but

  1485. that's the

  1486. reality of

  1487. what we

  1488. have before

  1489. us.

  1490. And there

  1491. is this

  1492. joking about

  1493. even hell

  1494. being a

  1495. place,

  1496. even if it

  1497. is real,

  1498. well at

  1499. least I'll

  1500. be with

  1501. my friends.

  1502. But what

  1503. kind of

  1504. place is

  1505. it?

  1506. It's a

  1507. place of

  1508. darkness,

  1509. torment,

  1510. and gnashing

  1511. of teeth.

  1512. It's not

  1513. going to be

  1514. a place

  1515. that's a

  1516. party and

  1517. a family

  1518. reunion.

  1519. What so

  1520. many people

  1521. look forward

  1522. to at this

  1523. time of

  1524. year is

  1525. being together

  1526. with friends

  1527. and families.

  1528. This is

  1529. not hell

  1530. though.

  1531. It's not

  1532. some kind

  1533. of party

  1534. for us

  1535. all to

  1536. enjoy

  1537. for all

  1538. eternity.

  1539. It's a

  1540. place of

  1541. torment.

  1542. It's no

  1543. joke.

  1544. because it's

  1545. not a

  1546. joke,

  1547. it's a

  1548. place that

  1549. we have

  1550. to take

  1551. seriously.

  1552. It's a

  1553. third as

  1554. we see a

  1555. place to

  1556. be avoided.

  1557. Some

  1558. people will

  1559. say,

  1560. well at

  1561. least I'll

  1562. finally be

  1563. away from

  1564. God and

  1565. Christians.

  1566. As if this

  1567. is something

  1568. to look

  1569. forward to.

  1570. you.

  1571. And it

  1572. says here

  1573. in verse

  1574. 9,

  1575. they will

  1576. suffer the

  1577. punishment of

  1578. eternal

  1579. destruction

  1580. away from

  1581. the presence

  1582. of the

  1583. Lord and

  1584. from the

  1585. glory of

  1586. his might.

  1587. And if

  1588. anyone thinks

  1589. that this

  1590. is a good

  1591. thing,

  1592. it is not.

  1593. It is the

  1594. last thing

  1595. you want

  1596. to be cast

  1597. away from

  1598. the presence

  1599. of the

  1600. Lord and

  1601. from the

  1602. glory of

  1603. his might.

  1604. It is the

  1605. absence of

  1606. all light,

  1607. utter darkness.

  1608. And if the

  1609. greatest blessing

  1610. we can have

  1611. is to know

  1612. the Lord and

  1613. his face,

  1614. his light

  1615. shining upon

  1616. us, the

  1617. reverse is

  1618. through our

  1619. greatest

  1620. curse is to

  1621. be cast

  1622. away.

  1623. It's a

  1624. place to

  1625. be avoided.

  1626. And the

  1627. only way to

  1628. avoid it is

  1629. to come to

  1630. the light,

  1631. to come and

  1632. put your

  1633. trust,

  1634. in the

  1635. Lord Jesus

  1636. so that

  1637. you will

  1638. not hear

  1639. these words

  1640. that Jesus

  1641. said,

  1642. depart from

  1643. me, you

  1644. cursed,

  1645. into eternal

  1646. fire.

  1647. We have

  1648. these great

  1649. truths before

  1650. us.

  1651. Henry

  1652. Alford once

  1653. said,

  1654. the most

  1655. dreadful

  1656. torment of

  1657. the lost,

  1658. in fact,

  1659. that which

  1660. constitutes their

  1661. state of

  1662. torment will

  1663. be this

  1664. coming to

  1665. themselves

  1666. when it

  1667. is too

  1668. late for

  1669. repentance.

  1670. It's like

  1671. the story

  1672. of the rich

  1673. man and

  1674. Lazarus.

  1675. It'll be

  1676. too late.

  1677. Knowing the

  1678. reality of

  1679. hell, then,

  1680. what does

  1681. that mean for

  1682. your journey

  1683. and your

  1684. final destination?

  1685. salvation?

  1686. Are you

  1687. safe on the

  1688. narrow way

  1689. or are you

  1690. in the

  1691. broad way

  1692. that leads

  1693. to destruction?

  1694. Is it time

  1695. to turn?

  1696. Hell is

  1697. real.

  1698. Hell is

  1699. not a

  1700. joke.

  1701. Hell is

  1702. to be

  1703. avoided

  1704. at all

  1705. costs.

  1706. And that's

  1707. why we

  1708. give thanks

  1709. to God

  1710. for his

  1711. gospel,

  1712. for the

  1713. good news

  1714. that shows

  1715. us another

  1716. destination,

  1717. another place

  1718. that we

  1719. should all

  1720. long for.

  1721. As we are

  1722. told of the

  1723. reality of

  1724. hell, we

  1725. give thanks

  1726. to God

  1727. for the

  1728. reality for

  1729. all who

  1730. believe that

  1731. at the

  1732. coming of

  1733. the Lord,

  1734. the Lord

  1735. will say,

  1736. come,

  1737. come,

  1738. you who

  1739. are blessed

  1740. by the

  1741. Father,

  1742. inherit the

  1743. kingdom

  1744. prepared for

  1745. you, the

  1746. place we

  1747. know as

  1748. heaven.

  1749. And the

  1750. way to

  1751. that is

  1752. through

  1753. Christ,

  1754. through the

  1755. light of

  1756. the world,

  1757. the Lord

  1758. Jesus

  1759. Christ.

  1760. We long

  1761. for peace

  1762. in our

  1763. world today.

  1764. We pray

  1765. for it.

  1766. And even

  1767. if it

  1768. comes,

  1769. though,

  1770. it will

  1771. not compare

  1772. to the

  1773. peace and

  1774. blessings

  1775. of for

  1776. God's

  1777. people in

  1778. this eternal

  1779. destination

  1780. of being

  1781. with him.

  1782. Even the

  1783. way Paul

  1784. describes it

  1785. in another

  1786. place, he

  1787. calls it

  1788. being home

  1789. with the

  1790. Lord.

  1791. The

  1792. destination

  1793. for all

  1794. who believe

  1795. to be

  1796. home with

  1797. the Lord,

  1798. to be

  1799. in his

  1800. presence

  1801. forevermore.

  1802. And when

  1803. we think

  1804. of the

  1805. difference

  1806. here between

  1807. the darkness

  1808. of hell

  1809. and the

  1810. light of

  1811. God's

  1812. kingdom,

  1813. what should

  1814. that do

  1815. for us?

  1816. As we are

  1817. reminded here

  1818. of why

  1819. Jesus came

  1820. to spare

  1821. us from

  1822. that darkness

  1823. and to

  1824. lead us

  1825. into his

  1826. wonderful

  1827. light,

  1828. what should

  1829. it do

  1830. for us?

  1831. Well,

  1832. when you look

  1833. at verse

  1834. 10 and

  1835. 11,

  1836. the contrast

  1837. is so

  1838. stark.

  1839. when he

  1840. comes on

  1841. that day

  1842. to be

  1843. glorified

  1844. in his

  1845. saints

  1846. and to

  1847. be marveled

  1848. at among

  1849. all who

  1850. have believed,

  1851. the difference

  1852. is there for

  1853. us to see.

  1854. Night

  1855. and day,

  1856. darkness

  1857. and light,

  1858. those who

  1859. believe will

  1860. glory in

  1861. their Lord.

  1862. He will be

  1863. marveled at

  1864. among those

  1865. who have

  1866. believed.

  1867. we will

  1868. praise his

  1869. name

  1870. forever.

  1871. And so

  1872. what should

  1873. that do

  1874. for us?

  1875. Well,

  1876. it should

  1877. drive us

  1878. to our

  1879. Saviour.

  1880. It should

  1881. drive us

  1882. to the

  1883. Lord Jesus.

  1884. As Paul

  1885. warns here

  1886. of the

  1887. punishment

  1888. of eternal

  1889. destruction,

  1890. those who

  1891. believe

  1892. the reverse

  1893. is true,

  1894. eternal

  1895. blessing.

  1896. The great

  1897. gospel

  1898. invitation

  1899. is to

  1900. come,

  1901. but to

  1902. come

  1903. for what?

  1904. Well,

  1905. that gospel

  1906. invitation

  1907. that we

  1908. have so

  1909. often,

  1910. as we

  1911. see in

  1912. John 3,

  1913. 16,

  1914. for God

  1915. so loved

  1916. the world

  1917. that he

  1918. gave his

  1919. only son

  1920. that whoever

  1921. believes in

  1922. him should

  1923. not perish,

  1924. this eternal

  1925. destruction he's

  1926. speaking of,

  1927. but have

  1928. eternal

  1929. life.

  1930. Again,

  1931. as we were

  1932. hearing this

  1933. morning,

  1934. that light

  1935. of the

  1936. Lord Jesus

  1937. is the

  1938. light of

  1939. life,

  1940. and life

  1941. eternal,

  1942. which should

  1943. drive us

  1944. to our

  1945. Savior.

  1946. Life,

  1947. it isn't

  1948. like a

  1949. computer game.

  1950. If you

  1951. enjoy playing

  1952. computer games,

  1953. you often

  1954. find that

  1955. you've got a

  1956. number of

  1957. lives.

  1958. You can

  1959. gain extra

  1960. lives,

  1961. you can claim

  1962. them.

  1963. This is not

  1964. real life,

  1965. though.

  1966. We only

  1967. have one

  1968. life to

  1969. live,

  1970. one

  1971. opportunity,

  1972. and today

  1973. is that

  1974. opportunity.

  1975. Today is

  1976. that time

  1977. to come.

  1978. As Charles

  1979. Studd once

  1980. said,

  1981. two little

  1982. lines I

  1983. heard one

  1984. day,

  1985. traveling along

  1986. life's busy

  1987. way,

  1988. bringing

  1989. conviction to

  1990. my heart,

  1991. and from my

  1992. mind would

  1993. not depart.

  1994. only one

  1995. life will

  1996. soon be

  1997. passed.

  1998. Only

  1999. what's done

  2000. for Christ

  2001. will last.

  2002. This

  2003. reality of

  2004. these

  2005. destinations

  2006. should drive

  2007. us to

  2008. our Lord

  2009. Jesus Christ.

  2010. It should

  2011. bring us

  2012. to our

  2013. knees,

  2014. begging with

  2015. him,

  2016. what must

  2017. I do

  2018. to be

  2019. saved?

  2020. and it

  2021. should

  2022. drive us

  2023. secondly

  2024. to prayer.

  2025. That's

  2026. what we

  2027. see here

  2028. in verse

  2029. 11,

  2030. to this

  2031. end,

  2032. we always

  2033. pray for

  2034. you that

  2035. our God

  2036. may make

  2037. you worthy

  2038. of his

  2039. calling,

  2040. and may

  2041. fulfill

  2042. every resolve

  2043. for good,

  2044. and every

  2045. work of

  2046. faith by

  2047. his power.

  2048. It should

  2049. drive us

  2050. on in

  2051. prayer.

  2052. salvation

  2053. belongs

  2054. to God,

  2055. but he

  2056. is a

  2057. God that

  2058. longs to

  2059. save.

  2060. He is a

  2061. God that

  2062. longs for

  2063. our people

  2064. to turn

  2065. in repentance,

  2066. to turn to

  2067. him and to

  2068. call out

  2069. on his

  2070. name.

  2071. Like so

  2072. many of the

  2073. Psalms that

  2074. we sing,

  2075. they speak

  2076. about looking

  2077. for this

  2078. path of

  2079. life,

  2080. this path

  2081. divine,

  2082. and as

  2083. Psalm 25

  2084. says,

  2085. show me

  2086. thy ways,

  2087. O Lord,

  2088. thy paths,

  2089. O teach

  2090. thou me.

  2091. It's this

  2092. crying out

  2093. to God

  2094. to show

  2095. us the

  2096. way,

  2097. the way

  2098. that is

  2099. life and

  2100. light through

  2101. Christ,

  2102. so it

  2103. should drive

  2104. us to

  2105. prayer.

  2106. The third

  2107. thing and

  2108. final thing

  2109. we see of

  2110. the reality

  2111. of heaven

  2112. and hell

  2113. as well

  2114. as it

  2115. should drive

  2116. us in

  2117. our mission.

  2118. In our

  2119. mission as

  2120. a people

  2121. of God,

  2122. in our

  2123. mission as

  2124. a church,

  2125. as a

  2126. denomination,

  2127. it should

  2128. drive us

  2129. in this

  2130. mission.

  2131. If we

  2132. know the

  2133. reality of

  2134. hell and

  2135. the reality

  2136. of heaven

  2137. and that

  2138. being in

  2139. one final

  2140. destination is

  2141. to be lost

  2142. eternally,

  2143. or to be in

  2144. the other is

  2145. to be saved

  2146. eternally,

  2147. that shouldn't

  2148. just wash

  2149. over us.

  2150. It shouldn't

  2151. just go past

  2152. us and not

  2153. make us think,

  2154. what are we

  2155. doing for

  2156. those who

  2157. are lost?

  2158. It should

  2159. drive us

  2160. in our

  2161. mission.

  2162. Why did

  2163. Jesus teach

  2164. so much

  2165. on hell?

  2166. Was it to

  2167. scare people?

  2168. No.

  2169. It was that

  2170. they might hear

  2171. the good news

  2172. of the gospel

  2173. beside that

  2174. and turn

  2175. in repentance

  2176. to him.

  2177. And so it

  2178. should drive

  2179. us in our

  2180. mission to

  2181. reach out

  2182. with the gospel

  2183. today in

  2184. the same

  2185. way that

  2186. Paul was

  2187. encouraging

  2188. the Thessalonians

  2189. to go on

  2190. in the faith,

  2191. to stand

  2192. up to those

  2193. who would

  2194. mock and

  2195. persecute the

  2196. Christian faith

  2197. and continue

  2198. to be salt

  2199. and light

  2200. in the midst

  2201. of this world.

  2202. It should

  2203. drive us

  2204. on.

  2205. They knew

  2206. they had

  2207. light.

  2208. They knew

  2209. they had the

  2210. light of

  2211. Jesus Christ

  2212. that made

  2213. so much of

  2214. a difference

  2215. in the

  2216. darkness

  2217. of this

  2218. world.

  2219. And so

  2220. should we

  2221. to know

  2222. that we

  2223. have the

  2224. light of

  2225. Christ

  2226. and to

  2227. shine it

  2228. forth

  2229. before all

  2230. others.

  2231. Charles

  2232. Spurgeon

  2233. once said

  2234. this.

  2235. It's such

  2236. a powerful

  2237. way of

  2238. looking at

  2239. it.

  2240. He said,

  2241. if sinners

  2242. be damned,

  2243. at least

  2244. let them

  2245. leap to

  2246. hell over

  2247. our dead

  2248. bodies.

  2249. And if

  2250. they perish,

  2251. perish,

  2252. let them

  2253. perish with

  2254. our arms

  2255. wrapped about

  2256. their knees,

  2257. imploring them

  2258. to stay.

  2259. If hell

  2260. must be

  2261. filled,

  2262. let it be

  2263. filled in

  2264. the teeth

  2265. of our

  2266. exertions,

  2267. and let

  2268. no one

  2269. go unwarned

  2270. or unprayed

  2271. for.

  2272. What a

  2273. challenge

  2274. to our

  2275. mission.

  2276. As a

  2277. church,

  2278. is that

  2279. the way

  2280. we live?

  2281. Putting

  2282. forth the

  2283. gospel of

  2284. Jesus Christ

  2285. in this

  2286. way with

  2287. passion,

  2288. conviction,

  2289. and power

  2290. of Christ,

  2291. with our

  2292. arms wrapped

  2293. about their

  2294. knees,

  2295. pleading for

  2296. people to be

  2297. saved,

  2298. to repent,

  2299. and to

  2300. turn.

  2301. Should that

  2302. not drive

  2303. us on,

  2304. the reality

  2305. of hell

  2306. and the

  2307. reality of

  2308. the other

  2309. destination,

  2310. and the

  2311. beauty of

  2312. heaven,

  2313. to put

  2314. that before

  2315. people too,

  2316. to see the

  2317. blessings that

  2318. are ours in

  2319. Christ.

  2320. J.C.

  2321. Ryle, he

  2322. once said

  2323. this, and

  2324. if you're a

  2325. Christian, be

  2326. encouraged in

  2327. this.

  2328. He said,

  2329. Christian,

  2330. look up and

  2331. take comfort.

  2332. Jesus has

  2333. prepared,

  2334. a place

  2335. for you,

  2336. and those

  2337. who follow

  2338. him shall

  2339. never perish,

  2340. neither shall

  2341. any man pluck

  2342. them out of

  2343. his hands.

  2344. Look forward

  2345. to that

  2346. glorious dwelling

  2347. he has

  2348. provided.

  2349. Look forward

  2350. in faith,

  2351. for it is

  2352. yours.

  2353. What a

  2354. contrast.

  2355. The beauty

  2356. of heaven,

  2357. a place

  2358. prepared by

  2359. the Lord

  2360. Jesus,

  2361. a place

  2362. that we

  2363. should long

  2364. for all

  2365. to come

  2366. and be

  2367. in,

  2368. and the

  2369. way is

  2370. through

  2371. Christ,

  2372. the light

  2373. of the

  2374. world.

  2375. So we

  2376. have the

  2377. reality of

  2378. hell,

  2379. the place

  2380. of darkness.

  2381. It's not a

  2382. place to be

  2383. joked about

  2384. because it's a

  2385. real place.

  2386. It's a place

  2387. to be avoided.

  2388. It's a place

  2389. that Jesus

  2390. presents to

  2391. us again

  2392. and again.

  2393. But thanks

  2394. be to God,

  2395. he shows us

  2396. the gospel,

  2397. the good

  2398. news,

  2399. and another

  2400. destination,

  2401. a place

  2402. prepared.

  2403. And so

  2404. tonight,

  2405. as we come

  2406. and maybe

  2407. count down

  2408. the days

  2409. to the end

  2410. of the year,

  2411. ask ourselves,

  2412. what is

  2413. our destination?

  2414. and pray

  2415. to God

  2416. to teach

  2417. us to

  2418. number our

  2419. days,

  2420. that we may

  2421. apply our

  2422. hearts to

  2423. wisdom,

  2424. and the

  2425. wisdom that

  2426. is before

  2427. us in the

  2428. word of

  2429. God.

  2430. The reality

  2431. is there

  2432. is a

  2433. hell,

  2434. a place

  2435. of punishment

  2436. and eternal

  2437. destruction,

  2438. away from

  2439. the presence

  2440. of the Lord

  2441. and from

  2442. the glory

  2443. of his

  2444. might,

  2445. the last

  2446. thing we

  2447. should want.

  2448. But praise

  2449. God,

  2450. that when

  2451. he comes,

  2452. he may

  2453. find us,

  2454. as Christians,

  2455. as those

  2456. of faith,

  2457. taking comfort

  2458. and consolation

  2459. in him,

  2460. that when he

  2461. comes on

  2462. that day,

  2463. to be glorified

  2464. in his

  2465. saints,

  2466. and to be

  2467. marveled at

  2468. among all

  2469. who have

  2470. believed.

  2471. Where

  2472. and in what

  2473. number

  2474. will you

  2475. be numbered?

  2476. The broad

  2477. way

  2478. or the

  2479. narrow path?

  2480. The destination

  2481. is before

  2482. us.

  2483. But thanks

  2484. be that

  2485. Christ

  2486. is before

  2487. us too.

  2488. So may

  2489. we look

  2490. to him

  2491. who has

  2492. gone before

  2493. and to

  2494. prepare

  2495. a place

  2496. for us.

  2497. May God

  2498. bless

  2499. his word

  2500. to us.

  2501. we're going

  2502. to conclude

  2503. by singing

  2504. the well-known

  2505. psalm that

  2506. we sing

  2507. so often,

  2508. Psalm 23,

  2509. but our

  2510. psalm that

  2511. again just

  2512. reminds us

  2513. of the

  2514. way to

  2515. that glorious

  2516. place.

  2517. the Lord

  2518. who is

  2519. our

  2520. shepherd.

  2521. The Lord's

  2522. my shepherd,

  2523. I'll not

  2524. want.

  2525. He makes

  2526. me down

  2527. to lie

  2528. in pastures

  2529. green.

  2530. He leadeth

  2531. me the

  2532. quiet

  2533. waters

  2534. by.

  2535. And

  2536. verse 4,

  2537. yet though

  2538. I walk

  2539. in death

  2540. stark

  2541. veil,

  2542. yet will

  2543. I fear

  2544. none ill,

  2545. for thou

  2546. art with

  2547. me,

  2548. and I

  2549. rod and

  2550. staff

  2551. me

  2552. comfort

  2553. still.

  2554. And then

  2555. the last

  2556. verse,

  2557. goodness

  2558. and mercy

  2559. all my

  2560. life shall

  2561. surely

  2562. follow me,

  2563. and in

  2564. God's

  2565. house

  2566. forevermore

  2567. my dwelling

  2568. place

  2569. shall be.

  2570. We'll sing

  2571. the whole

  2572. of this

  2573. psalm

  2574. to God's

  2575. place.

  2576. The

  2577. Lord's

  2578. my

  2579. shepherd,

  2580. I'm

  2581. the

  2582. one.

  2583. He

  2584. raised

  2585. me

  2586. down

  2587. to

  2588. lie

  2589. in

  2590. pastures

  2591. green

  2592. me

  2593. leadeth

  2594. me

  2595. the

  2596. quiet

  2597. waters

  2598. high.

  2599. My

  2600. soul

  2601. me

  2602. doth

  2603. restore

  2604. again

  2605. and

  2606. need

  2607. to

  2608. walk

  2609. the

  2610. pain

  2611. within

  2612. the

  2613. realms

  2614. of

  2615. righteousness

  2616. in

  2617. what

  2618. his

  2619. own

  2620. may

  2621. stay.

  2622. Need

  2623. though

  2624. I

  2625. walk

  2626. in

  2627. death's

  2628. dark

  2629. fail,

  2630. yet

  2631. dwell

  2632. like

  2633. here

  2634. the

  2635. ill.

  2636. For

  2637. thou

  2638. art

  2639. with

  2640. me

  2641. and

  2642. thy

  2643. walk

  2644. and

  2645. shall

  2646. be
