  1. Well, we're going to begin our worship this morning by singing to God's praise.

  2. We're going to sing from Psalm 40.

  3. Our service has a slightly different order to it this morning,

  4. the same as we had for the Summer Holiday Club service,

  5. where there's singings and readings interspersed throughout the service.

  6. And we're going to begin by singing the words of Psalm 40, verse 1 to,

    Psalms 40:1

  7. in a double, verse 5.

  8. I waited for the Lord my God and patiently did bear.

  9. At length to me he did incline my voice and cry to hear.

  10. We'll sing from verse 1 down to the end of double, verse 5, to God's praise.

  11. I waited for the Lord my God

  12. Unpensibly did bear.

  13. I waited for the Lord my voice and cry to hear.

  14. He took me from a fearful bed

  15. And from the mighty clay

  16. He put a new song in my life

  17. And on the rock he set my feet

  18. He put a new song in my life

  19. He put a new song in my life

  20. He put a new song in my life

  21. Our God to magnify

  22. Many shall see it

  23. And shall fear

  24. And on the Lord rely

  25. O blessed is the man who's trust

  26. Upon the Lord rely

  27. Upon the Lord rely

  28. Respecting not the kind or such

  29. As turn aside to light

  30. O Lord my God

  31. O many are

  32. The wonders

  33. Thou hast done

  34. Thy gracious hope

  35. To us were far

  36. Above all thoughts are gone

  37. And the Lord

  38. An order none can wreck on them

  39. Till the effect declare

  40. And speak of them

  41. My root day more

  42. Than can be numbered are

  43. Let's come to God in prayer.

  44. Let us pray.

  45. Our Father in heaven as we come

  46. Together this day to lift up our hearts

  47. And praise to you

  48. And to come and worship

  49. And adore our Saviour

  50. The Lord Jesus Christ.

  51. We thank you for all that you have done for us.

  52. We thank you Lord that we are blessed

  53. And we can say that your name is praised

  54. In our midst here

  55. For you are God and there is no other.

  56. And we know Lord that we are an impatient people in so many ways.

  57. Our patience is so often Lord on a short string at times as we would say.

  58. But we thank you Lord that you teach us to wait patiently upon you.

  59. And we pray Lord that you will give us that patience.

  60. Give us that patience even as we worship you this day.

  61. To have ears to hear.

  62. To be able to still ourselves in your presence.

  63. And to know Lord that you are with us.

  64. That you are in the midst to bless.

  65. We do thank you for your word and how it encourages us.

  66. It is a word of life.

  67. It is a word that reminds us of what the psalmist has been saying as we've sung.

  68. And we pray that you will help us to taste and see anew of the goodness of God through Jesus Christ.

  69. May you bless us together as families and friends as we gather together here today.

  70. May your blessing be over us as a people.

  71. Every home and family we represent.

  72. Lord we pray that you will pour down your spirit upon us.

  73. Gathered here and also those who will tune in online as well.

  74. We thank you Lord for one another.

  75. We thank you for the gift of prayer.

  76. And even at such a time as this Lord when there is so much joy around us.

  77. And so many lives and people.

  78. We know too Lord the many sadness.

  79. Much sadness in people's hearts.

  80. And the many sorrows that there are around us as well.

  81. How even in this past week in our own congregation.

  82. We have lost many loved ones.

  83. And many families have been touched by grief.

  84. We pray Lord your comfort, your blessing and your peace upon them.

  85. We pray for us all Lord as we reflect back over this year.

  86. And even maybe many years.

  87. We thank you that the promise is that you will be with us.

  88. And may we know that promise more and more real.

  89. Day by day and moment by moment.

  90. Bless your people far and wide today as many gather to worship you.

  91. We pray Lord that you will be with each one of your people.

  92. That they will know you Lord.

  93. And whatever goes on in their hearts.

  94. And whatever is happening in their lives far and wide.

  95. That they will know that you are with them.

  96. And that they would know Lord truly that you are God.

  97. And with you on our side there is no one who can defeat us.

  98. So we pray that you will build your church up.

  99. That your kingdom will come in power.

  100. And teach us always to pray.

  101. And to look to you.

  102. And to wait upon you for all things.

  103. So Lord continue with us now.

  104. Guide us and keep us.

  105. And pardon us in all our sins.

  106. As we ask all things.

  107. In Jesus precious name.

  108. Amen.

  109. Amen.

  110. Well as we come to worship God today.

  111. Is there any better place we could be.

  112. Than to gather around God's word together.

  113. To share singing praises together to him.

  114. And to come and hear what his word has to say to us.

  115. It's Christmas day.

  116. And so when we think about the theme of our service today.

  117. I'm sure everybody will have something in mind.

  118. As to what the service is going to be about.

  119. Maybe certain things come to mind today.

  120. Especially among the young folks.

  121. If you're thinking.

  122. I wonder what the minister will be preaching on today.

  123. It's Christmas day.

  124. So there's bound to be some mention of things like.

  125. Presents being given.

  126. The birth of Jesus.

  127. That's got to be mentioned in there somewhere.

  128. Doesn't it?

  129. There'll be all the obvious answers.

  130. But when we think about coming together today.

  131. And to think about the birth of Jesus.

  132. When it makes us think about lots of different things.

  133. And we're going to read a few different passages.

  134. Where we're going to read about.

  135. Not just the birth of Jesus.

  136. But the life of Jesus.

  137. We think of.

  138. Maybe characters in the Bible.

  139. Characters you've heard.

  140. Maybe mentioned.

  141. In these last few weeks.

  142. If you've been doing things in school.

  143. About the Christmas story.

  144. You'll be thinking about Mary and Joseph.

  145. You'll be thinking about.

  146. The place where Jesus was born.

  147. He was born in Bethlehem.

  148. You'll be thinking about the shepherds.

  149. Who were out watching their sheep by night.

  150. And how the angels appeared to them.

  151. Or maybe the wise men.

  152. Who came.

  153. Bearing gifts.

  154. There's all kinds of things we can think about.

  155. When it comes to thinking about the Christmas story.

  156. But do we miss the point sometimes?

  157. That's the key question.

  158. Do we think of God's promise to his people?

  159. A promise given through the likes of Isaiah.

  160. In the Old Testament.

  161. Who spoke of the child who would be born.

  162. Into this world.

  163. And the purpose for which he would come.

  164. The promise of God sending a saviour.

  165. And to see Jesus born into this world.

  166. Is the fulfilment of that promise.

  167. To do so.

  168. We must think about his birth.

  169. How he came into this world.

  170. But we have to think about more than that too.

  171. We have to think about his life.

  172. How he lived.

  173. And what he did for us.

  174. In his life.

  175. Here on earth.

  176. It's more than just.

  177. About the birth.

  178. Of Jesus.

  179. And that's what we're going to see today.

  180. As we go through a number of different readings.

  181. Together.

  182. You receive many different gifts.

  183. At this time of year.

  184. I'm sure.

  185. I'm sure you're all.

  186. Up excited this morning.

  187. To see what you got.

  188. But some people.

  189. Very often.

  190. They give pets.

  191. At this time of year.

  192. And you often see an advert.

  193. When it comes to talking about pets.

  194. Being given.

  195. At Christmas time.

  196. And it's really giving us.

  197. A warning.

  198. When they say.

  199. A dog is for life.

  200. Not just.

  201. For Christmas.

  202. Maybe you've heard that said before.

  203. A dog is for life.

  204. Not just for Christmas.

  205. Because a dog.

  206. Or any pet.

  207. Can be exciting.

  208. When you first receive it.

  209. And it can give you great joy.

  210. But then.

  211. As the days.

  212. And the weeks go past.

  213. Maybe you're into January.

  214. And February.

  215. And raining outside.

  216. It's windy.

  217. Your parents are saying.

  218. Well you wanted that dog.

  219. You've got to take it out.

  220. For a walk.

  221. And you're starting to get scunnered.

  222. With this dog.

  223. Because of what he has.

  224. You have to do.

  225. To look after him.

  226. And so there's this warning.

  227. About having a pet.

  228. Not just for a few days.

  229. Around Christmas.

  230. But for life.

  231. But for life.

  232. Well the same is true.

  233. When it comes to Jesus.

  234. We can so often enjoy.

  235. The Christmas time.

  236. And a few days.

  237. Around Christmas.

  238. When everything's great.

  239. And everything's wonderful.

  240. We get gifts.

  241. We get holidays.

  242. We're able to relax.

  243. And enjoy good food.

  244. We have all of these things.

  245. But then as the days go past.

  246. The weeks go past.

  247. What happens to the presents.

  248. Things.

  249. They soon get forgotten about.

  250. They get put to one side.

  251. The food is all gone.

  252. You're back into work.

  253. You're back into school.

  254. All of these things.

  255. And we forget.

  256. The main reason.

  257. For this time of year.

  258. And for all time of year.

  259. Is to remember that God gave his son.

  260. The Lord Jesus Christ.

  261. Not just for Christmas.

  262. But for life.

  263. And for all our days.

  264. That's the reason.

  265. That's the reason.

  266. He gave him.

  267. It's not just about the child.

  268. In the manger.

  269. That we so often see.

  270. It's about the child.

  271. Who grew.

  272. Who grew into his teenage years.

  273. Who grew into a man.

  274. And who served his father.

  275. All his days.

  276. And ultimately.

  277. Who gave his life.

  278. For all his people.

  279. Imagine.

  280. If all that people remembered about you.

  281. Was your birth.

  282. And that was it.

  283. Imagine if that was all.

  284. That you ever heard from people.

  285. For the rest of your days.

  286. Nobody remembered you growing up.

  287. Nobody remembered your first birthday.

  288. No one remembered you becoming a teenager.

  289. No one remembered you passing your exams.

  290. Or passing your driving test.

  291. No one sent you a card.

  292. On your 21st birthday.

  293. No one got in touch.

  294. When you turned 40.

  295. 70.

  296. 80.

  297. 90.

  298. It all went quiet.

  299. Nobody was in touch.

  300. Imagine.

  301. If you were just forgotten.

  302. About.

  303. It would be quite sad.

  304. Wouldn't it?

  305. Well imagine.

  306. If all we think of Jesus is.

  307. It's great he was born.

  308. Because it gives us.

  309. A holiday time.

  310. It gives us a time for presents.

  311. And to enjoy.

  312. Lots of food.

  313. We make the most of these things.

  314. We enjoy these things.

  315. And there's nothing wrong with them.

  316. In and of themselves.

  317. But today.

  318. There's a warning for us too.

  319. Not to forget.

  320. The Savior.

  321. Who was born.

  322. And the promise.

  323. Of a Savior.

  324. And so we're going to look at.

  325. Three stages.

  326. Of the life of Jesus.

  327. Together today.

  328. Together today.

  329. We're going to look at.

  330. His birth.

  331. We're going to look at.

  332. His childhood.

  333. And then we're going to look at.

  334. His ministry.

  335. When he was older.

  336. We're going to see.

  337. The reason why God sent.

  338. His son.

  339. Into this world.

  340. Our first reading is then.

  341. In Luke's gospel.

  342. All our readings.

  343. Are going to be in Luke's gospel.

  344. But scattered throughout.

  345. The gospel of Luke.

  346. And our first reading is in Luke.

  347. Chapter two.

  348. And we're going to read.

  349. That verse eight.

  350. Luke chapter two.

  351. And at verse eight.

  352. We're going to read.

  353. From verse eight to 14.

  354. And in the same region.

  355. There were shepherds.

  356. Out in the field.

  357. Keeping watch.

  358. Over their flock.

  359. By night.

  360. And an angel of the Lord.

  361. Appeared to them.

  362. And the glory of the Lord.

  363. Shone around them.

  364. And they were filled.

  365. With fear.

  366. Fear.

  367. And the angel said to them.

  368. Fear not.

  369. For behold.

  370. I bring you good news.

  371. Of great joy.

  372. That will be for all the people.

  373. For unto you.

  374. Is born this day.

  375. In the city of David.

  376. A savior.

  377. Who is Christ.

  378. The Lord.

  379. And this will be a sign for you.

  380. You will find a baby.

  381. Wrapped in swaddling clothes.

  382. And lying in a manger.

  383. And suddenly.

  384. There was.

  385. There was.

  386. With the angel.

  387. A multitude.

  388. Of the heavenly host.

  389. Praising God.

  390. And saying.

  391. Glory to God.

  392. In the highest.

  393. And on earth.

  394. Peace.

  395. Among those.

  396. With whom.

  397. He is pleased.

  398. Jesus.

  399. This is perhaps.

  400. Maybe one of the most.

  401. Commonly read.

  402. Passages.

  403. At Christmas time.

  404. When we read here.

  405. Of the shepherds.

  406. Who were told.

  407. This.

  408. Great news.

  409. Of a savior.

  410. Born.

  411. For this world.

  412. I bring you.

  413. Good news.

  414. Of great joy.

  415. That will be.

  416. For all the people.

  417. For unto you.

  418. Is born this.

  419. Day.

  420. In the city of David.

  421. A savior.

  422. Who is Christ.

  423. The Lord.

  424. And just think of these words.

  425. A savior.

  426. Who is Christ.

  427. The Lord.

  428. It's a time of year.

  429. When you may be here.

  430. Many Christmas carols.

  431. Being sung.

  432. You probably may be sung.

  433. Some.

  434. Yourselves.

  435. Over the last number.

  436. Of weeks.

  437. And maybe you've got.

  438. Your own favorite.

  439. Christmas carol.

  440. That you like to hear.

  441. Or sing along to.

  442. More than once.

  443. Or twice.

  444. A day.

  445. And so many of these carols.

  446. They tell us.

  447. The story.

  448. Of the birth.

  449. Of Jesus.

  450. But they remind us.

  451. To.

  452. Who he really.

  453. Is.

  454. If you think of.

  455. A carol.

  456. Such as.

  457. Away in a manger.

  458. Speaks about.

  459. The little.

  460. Lord.

  461. Jesus.

  462. The Lord.

  463. Jesus.

  464. Hark.

  465. The herald.

  466. Angels sing.

  467. Glory to.

  468. The newborn.

  469. King.

  470. There's all these words.

  471. That are put in there.

  472. That remind us.

  473. Who this.

  474. Jesus is.

  475. He is.

  476. Lord.

  477. He is.

  478. King.

  479. And he has come.

  480. As one of them.

  481. Goes on to say.

  482. Peace.

  483. Peace on earth.

  484. And mercy.

  485. Mild.

  486. The purpose.

  487. For which.

  488. God sent.

  489. His son.

  490. Into this world.

  491. That God.

  492. And sinners.

  493. Be reconciled.

  494. They be brought.

  495. Back.

  496. Together.

  497. So we have all these.

  498. Words.

  499. That come together.

  500. And it's the words.

  501. That we have here.

  502. A savior.

  503. Who is Christ.

  504. Who is Lord.

  505. It brings the message.

  506. Of the gospel.

  507. To us.

  508. This is what we read.

  509. In these.

  510. Verses.

  511. Before us.

  512. The gospel.

  513. But it's a time of year too.

  514. And even throughout the year.

  515. We see it more and more.

  516. When people try to.

  517. To come away.

  518. From the message.

  519. Of the gospel.

  520. And even at this time of year.

  521. They're trying to change.

  522. Even what this time of year.

  523. Is called.

  524. So instead of calling it.

  525. Christmas time.

  526. It's called.

  527. The fest of season.

  528. Or the winter fest.

  529. People are trying to change.

  530. The name of it.

  531. Take it away.

  532. From being more.

  533. Christian.

  534. And.

  535. A couple of years ago.

  536. A few years ago.

  537. Now.

  538. In London.

  539. There was a primary school.

  540. Head teacher.

  541. That wanted to change.

  542. The words.

  543. In some of the carols.

  544. In case they caused.

  545. Offence.

  546. Little Lord Jesus.

  547. Was to be changed.

  548. To baby boy.

  549. Jesus.

  550. In a way.

  551. In a manger.

  552. Jesus.

  553. Our savior.

  554. Was to be changed.

  555. To Jesus.

  556. The baby.

  557. Born.

  558. In another one.

  559. The new king.

  560. Born.

  561. Today.

  562. Was to be changed.

  563. To a baby.

  564. Born.

  565. Today.

  566. And you see.

  567. What they're trying to do.

  568. Little by little.

  569. Just taking out.

  570. The important words.

  571. Describing.

  572. Who Jesus is.

  573. Christ.

  574. Lord.

  575. Savior.

  576. All of these words.

  577. Being taken away.

  578. But there was one mother.

  579. Who stood up to this.

  580. And she said.

  581. You cannot start changing.

  582. These words.

  583. Words.

  584. If he was just.

  585. A baby boy.

  586. Named Jesus.

  587. There wouldn't be this.

  588. Time of year.

  589. In the first place.

  590. He is our Lord.

  591. And savior.

  592. He is king.

  593. Of kings.

  594. And that is.

  595. The whole point.

  596. The people are becoming.

  597. More and more.

  598. Afraid of.

  599. Offending people.

  600. Of causing offense.

  601. Towards people.

  602. So they want to try.

  603. And change these names.

  604. So subtly.

  605. But the gospel.

  606. Is so much more.

  607. Than just.

  608. A baby.

  609. Boy.

  610. Or little baby.

  611. Jesus.

  612. For we read here.

  613. He is.

  614. Christ.

  615. The Lord.

  616. This baby.

  617. In the manger.

  618. Was more than just that.

  619. He is Christ.

  620. The Lord.

  621. And as you read.

  622. Of the shepherds.

  623. Here.

  624. They were afraid.

  625. When they saw.

  626. This host.

  627. Of angels.

  628. Up here.

  629. They were in the field.

  630. Keeping watch.

  631. Over their flock.

  632. And the angel.

  633. Appeared.

  634. With this good news.

  635. To them.

  636. And they were afraid.

  637. But.

  638. The angel said.

  639. Fear not.

  640. Fear not.

  641. The angel.

  642. Speaks them.

  643. And he shares.

  644. This message.

  645. To them.

  646. A message.

  647. That people.

  648. Have been waiting.

  649. Thousands.

  650. And here.

  651. The shepherds.

  652. Hear this.

  653. Wonderful.

  654. News.

  655. The angel.

  656. Tells them.

  657. That the hope.

  658. Of the world.

  659. Has come.

  660. Imagine.

  661. I'm sure.

  662. Many of you.

  663. Have been counting down.

  664. The days.

  665. To Christmas.

  666. Many of you.

  667. Maybe had an advent calendar.

  668. Eating the sweets.

  669. One by one.

  670. Each day.

  671. Did any of you.

  672. Go ahead.

  673. A few days.

  674. One chocolate.

  675. For that day.

  676. Just wasn't enough.

  677. So what's the harm.

  678. I'll take.

  679. Tomorrow's as well.

  680. Maybe even the day.

  681. After two.

  682. And you end up.

  683. You almost eat.

  684. The whole advent calendar.

  685. In one sitting.

  686. You don't have patience.

  687. Well.

  688. The angels.

  689. Are here.

  690. Speaking about.

  691. A people.

  692. Who are waiting.

  693. For a savior.

  694. Not just for a few days.

  695. Or even a few years.

  696. Or even a few hundred years.

  697. But for thousands of years.

  698. The bible.

  699. Was telling them.

  700. That a savior.

  701. Was to come.

  702. And hear the shepherds.

  703. Hearing.

  704. This good news.

  705. He has come.

  706. And who is it?

  707. It is the son.

  708. Of God.

  709. What a promise.

  710. We have.

  711. In this child.

  712. Who was born.

  713. He is Christ.

  714. The Lord.

  715. Someone once said.

  716. A thousand times.

  717. In history.

  718. A baby.

  719. Has become.

  720. A king.

  721. A king.

  722. But only once.

  723. In history.

  724. Did a king.

  725. Become.

  726. A baby.

  727. But this baby.

  728. Was Christ.

  729. The Lord.

  730. What a wonderful promise.

  731. We have.

  732. That Christ.

  733. Came into this world.

  734. He was born into this world.

  735. Christ.

  736. The Lord.

  737. But before we.

  738. Go on to our next part.

  739. We're going to sing.

  740. Another psalm.

  741. To God's praise.

  742. To God's praise.

  743. We're going to sing.

  744. Psalm 62.

  745. It's in the Scottish Psalter.

  746. Page 294.

  747. Psalm 62.

  748. On page.

  749. 294.

  750. We're going to sing.

  751. Verse 5.

  752. To verse 8.

  753. And again.

  754. This psalm reminds us.

  755. At verse 5.

  756. Of waiting.

  757. Upon the Lord.

  758. But knowing.

  759. The hope that he gives.

  760. My soul.

  761. Wait thou with patience.

  762. Upon thy God alone.

  763. On him dependeth.

  764. All my hope.

  765. And expectation.

  766. We'll sing from verse 5.

  767. To verse 8.

  768. To God's praise.

  769. On him.

  770. Please.

  771. Please.

  772. Please.

  773. My soul.

  774. Wait thou with patience.

  775. Upon thy God alone.

  776. On him.

  777. On him.

  778. Dependeth all my hope.

  779. And expectation.

  780. The only might.

  781. The only might.

  782. Salvation.

  783. The only might.

  784. Salvation.

  785. The only might.

  786. Salvation.

  787. Is.

  788. And my strong.

  789. The only might.

  790. Is.

  791. Is.

  792. Is.

  793. Is.

  794. Is.

  795. The only.

  796. Is.

  797. Is.

  798. The only my salvation is, and my strong rock is He.

  799. He only has my sure defense, I shall not move thee.

  800. In God my glory, grace it is, and my salvation sure.

  801. In God the rock, it is of my strength, my refuge most secure.

  802. If He complains your confidence, and Him continually,

  803. before Him pour me out your heart, God is our refuge time.

  804. Amen.

  805. As we read here in this passage.

  806. So we're going to read from verse 41 down to verse 52.

  807. Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover.

  808. And when he was 12 years old, they went up according to custom.

  809. When the feast was ended, as they were returning,

  810. the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem.

  811. His parents did not know it, but supposing him to be in the group,

  812. they went a day's journey.

  813. But then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances.

  814. And when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him.

  815. After three days, they found him in the temple,

  816. sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.

  817. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.

  818. When his parents saw him, they were astonished.

  819. And his mother said to him,

  820. Son, why have you treated us so?

  821. Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.

  822. He said to them,

  823. Why were you looking for me?

  824. Did you not know that I must be in my father's house?

  825. And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them.

  826. And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them.

  827. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart.

  828. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.

  829. Well, children, have you ever been in a situation,

  830. and maybe even the adults you can look back in your life and you think of this,

  831. have you been in a situation where you got a row from your parents

  832. for making a mess,

  833. only for them to realize that you were making something special for them.

  834. And their tune has to change a little bit.

  835. For example, maybe your parents have walked into the kitchen.

  836. And what meets them as they walk into the kitchen is flour absolutely everywhere.

  837. Eggs broken on the floor.

  838. Milk dripping off the worktops.

  839. And they're about to lose the plot and start shouting

  840. when all of a sudden you bring out a nice cake.

  841. I've made this for you.

  842. And you have to sort of backtrack a little bit.

  843. They've been making something special.

  844. Okay, there's been mess involved in it,

  845. but they were making something special.

  846. Well, as we read on in the life of Jesus here,

  847. this part we've read in the Gospel of Luke

  848. is such a special passage for us.

  849. It's the only account we have of Jesus

  850. in between being born and beginning his public ministry.

  851. He began his ministry, as it were, at the age of about 30.

  852. But here he is at the age of 12.

  853. And what is he doing?

  854. Well, we are told here that he is about his father's business.

  855. That he must be in the father's house.

  856. But it seems at first, as it were,

  857. that Jesus is being a bad boy.

  858. They've come to Jerusalem for the Passover.

  859. They would do this every year.

  860. But as they are making their way back from Jerusalem,

  861. going back to their home,

  862. there will be a big crowd of them.

  863. And the parents, Jesus' parents,

  864. are walking along with this crowd.

  865. And they think that Jesus is there with them,

  866. among the crowd,

  867. playing with the other children, maybe.

  868. But after a day's travel,

  869. so they've gone a fair distance,

  870. they realize that he's not there.

  871. And so they go back to Jerusalem.

  872. And they're hunting for him.

  873. And they're trying to find him.

  874. And it's taking them days to find him.

  875. And you can imagine the worry.

  876. Any child who's missing a parent is going to be anxious,

  877. wondering where they are,

  878. afraid of what might have happened to him.

  879. It says,

  880. after three days, in verse 46,

  881. they found him in the temple.

  882. And you can sense that they're frustrated,

  883. and there's a sense of anger.

  884. Although they were amazed at what they saw, too.

  885. It says in verse 46,

  886. when his parents saw them, they were astonished.

  887. And his mother said to him,

  888. Son, why have you treated us so?

  889. Why have you done this to us?

  890. We've been so worried about you.

  891. We've been hunting for you.

  892. But when they find him,

  893. in the midst of wanting to rebuke him,

  894. Jesus turns to them and says something wonderful,

  895. something special.

  896. He says,

  897. I must be in my father's house.

  898. Or,

  899. I must be about my father's business,

  900. is another translation of that.

  901. He is no ordinary child.

  902. He is the son of God,

  903. who is growing in wisdom and knowledge and stature.

  904. And that is the wonder of what he says to them.

  905. Here,

  906. I must be about my father's business.

  907. At this point,

  908. we read, too,

  909. that the parents,

  910. they didn't fully understand,

  911. in verse 50,

  912. they didn't understand the saying that he spoke to them.

  913. And it's almost like Luke is putting up a sign for us here.

  914. He's saying,

  915. stop.

  916. Stop everything that you're doing.

  917. Wait a moment,

  918. and just listen to what I have to say to you.

  919. So in the midst of everything that we're seeing around us just now,

  920. when you're seeing flashing lights everywhere,

  921. and signs up everywhere around us,

  922. there's this sign for us, too,

  923. where the gospel is saying to us,

  924. stop.

  925. Just stop where you are.

  926. Do you really understand what this is all about?

  927. Do you really understand what this life,

  928. what this world is all about?

  929. Constantly rushing around and looking for answers for this,

  930. that,

  931. and the next thing.

  932. The gospel is saying,

  933. stop.

  934. Stop and just listen for a moment.

  935. And isn't it good for us to be able today

  936. just to stop,

  937. to come here and just sit for a few moments,

  938. worship God together,

  939. or to tune in online and hear the gospel proclaimed,

  940. just to stop for a moment,

  941. and to think to ourselves today,

  942. do we understand what we're doing?

  943. Do we fully appreciate what we have in the person of Jesus Christ?

  944. Do we realize why he came?

  945. It's more than just the birth of a child.

  946. This is the son of God about his father's business.

  947. And so today,

  948. stop often.

  949. Stop regular today,

  950. tomorrow and every day,

  951. and just think about what God has done for us

  952. through Jesus Christ.

  953. Here,

  954. we are taught

  955. why he came.

  956. We are taught

  957. he came to be about

  958. the father's business,

  959. to do all that the father had sent him

  960. for into this world,

  961. to live,

  962. to teach,

  963. to show himself for who he is,

  964. the son of God,

  965. but ultimately,

  966. to give himself.

  967. So stop today.

  968. Stop often.

  969. Even as you go home today,

  970. or as you have your Christmas meal,

  971. whether it's today or tomorrow,

  972. whenever you have it together,

  973. as you offer up thanks,

  974. stop.

  975. Stop.

  976. Stop and think

  977. about all we have to be thankful for.

  978. As you open your gifts,

  979. your presence today,

  980. stop.

  981. Stop for a moment and think.

  982. Why do we have all this?

  983. What's the greatest gift that we have?

  984. That God sent his son

  985. into this world

  986. and give thanks to him

  987. that he speaks to us

  988. and he teaches us

  989. that he was about

  990. the father's business.

  991. That he came into this world

  992. for sinners

  993. such as we are.

  994. So stop.

  995. Stop and remember

  996. what God has done for us

  997. through his son,

  998. born,

  999. who grew up

1000. as a child in this world

1001. and at 12 years old

1002. seemed to cause his parents

  1003. so much distress.

  1004. But actually,

1005. he told them something wonderful.

1006. He showed them something wonderful.

  1007. He said,

  1008. I am here

  1009. to be about

  1010. my father's business.

  1011. Well,

  1012. our final reading

  1013. is further on

1014. in the Gospel of Luke

  1015. in Luke chapter 19.

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  1016. And this reading

  1017. just reminds us

1018. what the father's business is.

  1019. Luke chapter 19

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  1020. and at verse 1.

  1021. We read down

  1022. to verse 10.

  1023. Jesus,

  1024. he entered Jericho

  1025. and was passing through.

1026. And there was a man

  1027. named Zacchaeus.

1028. He was a chief tax collector

  1029. and was rich.

  1030. And he was seeking

1031. to see who Jesus was.

1032. But on account of the crowd,

  1033. he could not

  1034. because he was small

  1035. of stature.

1036. So he ran on ahead

  1037. and climbed up

  1038. into a sigamore tree

  1039. to see him.

  1040. For he was about

  1041. to pass that way.

  1042. And when Jesus

  1043. came to the place,

  1044. he looked up

  1045. and said to him,

  1046. Zacchaeus,

  1047. hurry and come down

  1048. for I must stay

  1049. at your house today.

  1050. So he hurried

  1051. and came down

  1052. and received him joyfully.

1053. And when they saw it,

  1054. they all grumbled.

  1055. He has gone in

  1056. to be a guest

  1057. of a man

  1058. who is a sinner.

  1059. And Zacchaeus

  1060. stood and said

  1061. to the Lord,

  1062. Behold, Lord,

  1063. half of my goods

1064. I give to the poor.

1065. And if I have defrauded

  1066. anyone of anything,

  1067. I restore it fourfold.

1068. And Jesus said to him,

  1069. Today salvation

1070. has come to this house,

  1071. since he also

1072. is a son of Abraham.

1073. For the Son of Man

  1074. came to seek

1075. and to save the lost.

  1076. We jump forward now

  1077. a number of years

1078. in the life of Jesus

  1079. to when he was

  1080. about 33 years old.

  1081. This is not long

  1082. before he went

  1083. to the cross.

  1084. And we read that

  1085. in Luke's Gospel,

  1086. chapter 3,

  1087. verse 23,

  1088. that when Jesus

  1089. began his public ministry,

  1090. as it were,

  1091. going around the people

1092. and we start to hear

  1093. about his ministry,

  1094. he was about

  1095. the age of 30.

  1096. And he ministered

  1097. in this world

  1098. for three years

  1099. before the crucifixion.

  1100. And here he is

  1101. and he meets

  1102. a man called

  1103. Zacchaeus.

  1104. And Zacchaeus

  1105. was someone

1106. who, as we read here,

  1107. was a man

  1108. who would have

  1109. pretty much everything

  1110. that he needed

  1111. or wanted in life.

  1112. He was rich.

  1113. He was feared

  1114. by many.

  1115. He had power

  1116. and authority.

  1117. But what we see

  1118. of Zacchaeus

  1119. here

  1120. is that there was

  1121. something missing.

  1122. He knew

  1123. that there was

  1124. something missing.

  1125. And today,

1126. in all that we get,

  1127. and maybe

  1128. we receive

  1129. many different things

  1130. in these days,

  1131. and we think

  1132. we're so blessed,

  1133. we're so fortunate,

  1134. and we are

  1135. in so many ways.

1136. But do we still think,

  1137. well,

  1138. there's still

  1139. something missing.

  1140. There's still

  1141. something

  1142. I am needing.

  1143. Well,

  1144. here in this passage,

  1145. we are being

  1146. told what it is.

  1147. We see here

  1148. the very reason

  1149. why Jesus

  1150. came into this world,

  1151. why he was

  1152. born into this world.

  1153. The child

  1154. who we so often

  1155. reflect on

1156. at this time of year,

1157. who grew into a boy

  1158. who was about

  1159. his father's business,

  1160. who became a man

  1161. to fulfill

  1162. all the promises

  1163. of Scripture.

  1164. It says

  1165. in verse 10,

1166. for the Son of Man

  1167. came

  1168. to seek

  1169. and to save

  1170. the lost.

  1171. It's sometimes

  1172. said of people,

  1173. they were born

  1174. for that.

  1175. You can see it

  1176. in so many

  1177. different parts

  1178. of life.

  1179. Some people

  1180. are said of,

  1181. they're said of them,

  1182. they're just

  1183. a born leader.

  1184. They have that gift,

  1185. just born

  1186. to lead.

  1187. Others

  1188. are just

  1189. born

  1190. for maybe

  1191. a certain sport.

  1192. It's said

  1193. they were just

  1194. born to do that,

  1195. whether it's

  1196. play football

  1197. or any other sport.

  1198. Others

  1199. had said

  1200. they were just

  1201. born to sing.

  1202. Others

  1203. born to care,

  1204. born to teach.

  1205. We're born

  1206. to do many

  1207. different things.

  1208. But why

  1209. was Jesus

  1210. born?

  1211. Why did

  1212. Jesus

  1213. come into

  1214. this world?

  1215. Well,

  1216. we're told

  1217. there

  1218. in verse

  1219. 10.

  1220. Jesus,

  1221. the Son

  1222. of Man,

  1223. came into

  1224. this world

  1225. to seek

  1226. and to save

  1227. the lost.

  1228. And Zacchaeus

  1229. was one

  1230. such person.

  1231. He was

  1232. lost.

  1233. In many

  1234. ways,

  1235. he maybe

  1236. had so much

  1237. in this life,

  1238. and yet

  1239. at the same

  1240. time,

  1241. he was

  1242. lost.

  1243. There was

  1244. something

  1245. missing

  1246. in his

  1247. life.

  1248. But the

  1249. more he

  1250. heard about

  1251. Jesus,

  1252. the more

  1253. he wanted

  1254. to see

  1255. this man.

  1256. And it

  1257. wasn't to

  1258. come and

  1259. see the

  1260. child born

  1261. in the

  1262. manger,

  1263. but it

  1264. was to

  1265. come and

  1266. see the

  1267. Son of

  1268. God

  1269. fulfilling

  1270. all the

  1271. promises

  1272. for which

  1273. God had

  1274. sent him

  1275. into this

  1276. world,

  1277. to be a

  1278. savior of

  1279. this world,

  1280. to fulfill

  1281. those words

  1282. that we read

  1283. before in

  1284. the Gospel

  1285. of Luke,

  1286. when the

  1287. birth of

  1288. Jesus is

  1289. told.

  1290. And the

  1291. angel appeared

  1292. and said,

  1293. fear not,

  1294. for behold,

  1295. I bring you

  1296. good news

  1297. of great

  1298. joy that

  1299. will be

  1300. for all

  1301. the people.

  1302. For unto

  1303. you is

  1304. born this

  1305. day in

  1306. the city

  1307. of David

  1308. a savior

  1309. who is

  1310. Christ the

  1311. Lord for

  1312. all people,

  1313. for all

  1314. who will

  1315. hear,

  1316. for all

  1317. who will

  1318. seek,

  1319. for all

  1320. who will

  1321. come to

  1322. him,

  1323. he is a

  1324. savior.

  1325. And so

  1326. here in

  1327. this later

  1328. passage in

  1329. Luke,

  1330. we're reminded

  1331. through

  1332. Zacchaeus

  1333. the reason

  1334. why he

  1335. came,

  1336. to seek

  1337. and to

  1338. save the

  1339. lost.

  1340. His

  1341. appointment

  1342. with Zacchaeus

  1343. was planned

  1344. by God.

  1345. This would

  1346. be the

  1347. moment when

  1348. Jesus would

  1349. call him

  1350. down and

  1351. say salvation

  1352. has come to

  1353. this household

  1354. today.

  1355. And the

  1356. wonder of

  1357. the Gospel

  1358. is that

  1359. today is

  1360. an appointment

  1361. for us

  1362. all to

  1363. come and

  1364. hear this

  1365. good news

  1366. once again.

  1367. And of

  1368. all the

  1369. gifts you

  1370. receive today

  1371. or in

  1372. these days,

  1373. the greatest

  1374. gift is the

  1375. offer of

  1376. the Gospel

  1377. to come

  1378. and see

  1379. this Christ,

  1380. the Son

  1381. of Man

  1382. who came

  1383. to seek

  1384. and to

  1385. save

  1386. the lost.

  1387. I'm sure

  1388. many of

  1389. you,

  1390. young ones

  1391. maybe especially

  1392. and older

  1393. ones I'm

  1394. sure too,

  1395. you had

  1396. your Christmas

  1397. list,

  1398. the things

  1399. that you

  1400. wanted to

  1401. receive at

  1402. this time.

  1403. There would

  1404. be all kinds

  1405. of things

  1406. on that

  1407. list.

  1408. And maybe

  1409. you've

  1410. ticked them

  1411. off,

  1412. maybe you've

  1413. got them

  1414. all,

  1415. but maybe

  1416. you still

  1417. think there's

  1418. still something

  1419. missing.

  1420. And in your

  1421. life you'll

  1422. go on maybe

  1423. thinking no

  1424. matter what

  1425. you get,

  1426. the gifts

  1427. of this

  1428. world,

  1429. you're still

  1430. thinking there's

  1431. still something

  1432. missing.

  1433. Maybe you're

  1434. growing old

  1435. now yourself,

  1436. 30s,

  1437. 40s,

  1438. 50s,

  1439. 70s,

  1440. 90s,

  1441. and you're

  1442. still thinking

  1443. there's still

  1444. something missing.

  1445. What is it?

  1446. It's Christ.

  1447. Because if you

  1448. don't have

  1449. him,

  1450. there's still

  1451. something missing

  1452. and always

  1453. will be.

  1454. But the

  1455. good news

  1456. of the

  1457. gospel is

  1458. that God

  1459. sent his

  1460. son into

  1461. this world,

  1462. born as a

  1463. child,

  1464. as the

  1465. saviour of

  1466. the world,

  1467. grew as a

  1468. child,

  1469. as a child

  1470. about his

  1471. father's

  1472. business.

  1473. And as we

  1474. see as a

  1475. man,

  1476. the father's

  1477. business was

  1478. to seek

  1479. and to

  1480. save the

  1481. lost.

  1482. And he

  1483. saved through

  1484. his death.

  1485. He was

  1486. born to

  1487. die.

  1488. That's the

  1489. reason why

  1490. Jesus was

  1491. born into

  1492. this world,

  1493. to die

  1494. and give

  1495. his life

  1496. that we

  1497. might live.

  1498. So today,

  1499. may we be

  1500. blessed by

  1501. the gospel.

  1502. May we

  1503. hear his

  1504. words and

  1505. see that he

  1506. has come to

  1507. seek and

  1508. to save

  1509. the lost.

  1510. And may we

  1511. know salvation

  1512. coming to

  1513. our households

  1514. today through

  1515. the power

  1516. of his

  1517. gospel.

  1518. May God

  1519. bless his

  1520. word to

  1521. us.

  1522. Let's just

  1523. join our

  1524. hearts in

  1525. prayer.

  1526. Our

  1527. father in

  1528. heaven,

  1529. we rejoice

  1530. in the

  1531. good news

  1532. offered to

  1533. all people

  1534. to hear

  1535. those great

  1536. words that

  1537. unto you is

  1538. born this

  1539. day a

  1540. saviour who

  1541. is Christ

  1542. the Lord.

  1543. And may we

  1544. come to

  1545. know Christ

  1546. as our

  1547. Lord,

  1548. even as

  1549. Zacchaeus

  1550. came to

  1551. know it

  1552. for himself,

  1553. that power

  1554. of salvation

  1555. that came

  1556. to his

  1557. house and

  1558. to his

  1559. heart.

  1560. We pray,

  1561. Lord, that

  1562. you will

  1563. bless us

  1564. by your

  1565. presence today

  1566. and bless

  1567. us in our

  1568. seeking of

  1569. you, that

  1570. our eyes

  1571. will be

  1572. filled with

  1573. the glory

  1574. of God

  1575. in seeing

  1576. Jesus Christ.

  1577. Lord, that

  1578. one thing

  1579. missing, may

  1580. we receive it

  1581. and receive it

  1582. joyfully.

  1583. So guide us

  1584. and help

  1585. as we pray

  1586. in Jesus'

  1587. name.

  1588. Amen.

  1589. We're going

  1590. to conclude

  1591. our time

  1592. by singing

  1593. again to

  1594. God's

  1595. praise.

  1596. Psalm 40,

  1597. but in the

  1598. Singed Psalms,

  1599. Psalm 40,

  1600. in the Singed

  1601. Psalms at

  1602. verse 13,

  1603. page 51

  1604. of the

  1605. Psalm books.

  1606. Psalm 40

  1607. at verse 13,

  1608. Be pleased,

  1609. O Lord,

  1610. to rescue

  1611. me.

  1612. O Lord,

  1613. come quickly

  1614. to my

  1615. aid.

  1616. May all

  1617. who seek

  1618. to take

  1619. my life

  1620. with shame

  1621. and turmoil

  1622. be repaid.

  1623. Verse 17,

  1624. Yet I am

  1625. poor and

  1626. in great

  1627. need.

  1628. Lord,

  1629. think on

  1630. me,

  1631. I humbly

  1632. pray.

  1633. You are

  1634. my Savior

  1635. and my

  1636. help.

  1637. Come,

  1638. O my

  1639. God,

  1640. do not

  1641. delay.

  1642. We'll

  1643. sing these

  1644. four verses

  1645. to God's

  1646. praise.

  1647. Praise.

  1648. We

  1649. praise,

  1650. O Lord,

  1651. to

  1652. rest

  1653. to him.

  1654. O Lord,

  1655. come quickly

  1656. to my

  1657. aid.

  1658. May all

  1659. who seek

  1660. to take

  1661. my life

  1662. with shame

  1663. and terror

  1664. will be

  1665. repaid.

  1666. May all

  1667. who

  1668. caught

  1669. my

  1670. overthrown

  1671. turn

  1672. back

  1673. distress

  1674. away

  1675. again.

  1676. May those

  1677. whom

  1678. feel

  1679. down

  1680. Ben

  1681. God,

  1682. who

  1683. seek

  1684. you

  1685. face

1686. face, be joyful in your all their days.

1687. Let those who love salvation stay, exalted be the Lord always.

1688. Yet I am blue and in great need, Lord, take on me my humbly prayer.

1689. You are my Savior and my help.

1690. Come, O my God, do not delay.

  1691. Amen.

1692. After the benediction, I'll go to the main door.

1693. Now may grace, mercy, and peace from God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit rest upon and

1694. abide with you all, no one forevermore.

  1695. Amen.

  1696. Amen.
