  1. back together to a reading in Philippians chapter 3. We're going to look at verse 12 to verse 16.

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  2. Just to get it in context we can read again at verse 10.

  3. That I may know him and the power of his resurrection and may share his sufferings

  4. becoming like him in his death that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the

  5. dead. Not that I have already obtained this or I'm already perfect but I press on to make it my own

  6. because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers I do not consider that I have made it my own

  7. but one thing I do forgetting what is behind and straining forward to what lies ahead.

  8. I press on towards the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

  9. Let those of us who are mature think this way and if in anything you think otherwise God will

  10. reveal that also to you. Only let us hold through to what we have attained.

  11. As we look at these verses what we find is Paul in many ways examining himself and looking at his life

  12. and where he is, what he had, what it was worth and what he needed in his life.

  13. As you read from the beginning of the chapter you see he's going through what he once was.

  14. We've looked at this in the past, the start of chapter 3.

  15. How he thought he was on the right track, how he thought he was doing everything right

  16. to please God in his own eyes and yet all the time he was on the wrong path entirely,

  17. heading in completely the wrong way.

  18. But what changed for him?

  19. What great change happened in his life?

  20. Well he tells us in these verses that we've read in verse 12.

  21. Because Christ Jesus has made me his own.

  22. Another version of that word translation would be Christ Jesus has taken hold of me.

  23. So this is the great change that has happened in his life.

  24. Everything that he saw as righteousness by himself, he now sees as just filthy rags, rubbish,

  25. compared to the righteousness that there is in Christ through faith.

  26. And so this is what has changed in him.

  27. And as we look at ourselves, as we think of ourselves, here we are, the last Wednesday meeting of this year.

  28. As we think looking back over the year that's gone and God willing looking ahead to the year that's about to come our way.

  29. It's often a time when we reflect and look on ourselves.

  30. And wonder just where we are.

  31. And any examination of ourselves probably always leave us, maybe should always leave us,

  32. feeling that there's always room for improvement.

  33. We are not perfect.

  34. None of us.

  35. And that's what Paul says here in verse 12.

  36. Not that I have already obtained this, or I'm already perfect.

  37. He doesn't see him as the perfect Christian in any way, shape or form.

  38. But what he says is, I press on.

  39. I press on.

  40. And so that's what we are to do as well.

  41. We as a people are to be a people who recognise we're not perfect,

  42. recognise how often we fall short in so many ways,

  43. but to take heart through these words too and to press on.

  44. So whether we're looking back as to what has gone,

  45. looking at where we are in the present situation,

  46. or whether we're looking ahead, God willing, to what lies ahead of us,

  47. that we take this from Paul himself to us.

  48. We press on.

  49. We may often say this time of year,

  50. well, things are going to be different.

  51. I'm going to change my life.

  52. Starting the 1st of January,

  53. I'm going to start doing things differently.

  54. We can all have our great plans,

  55. but how many of them last?

  56. January is often the time of year when most people join a gym.

  57. They think we're going to start the year in a new way.

  58. Join a gym, get healthy, get fit.

  59. By the end of January,

  60. 50% of those who have joined a gym

  61. will have cancelled their membership.

  62. They don't keep going.

  63. They don't press on.

  64. They can't get into it.

  65. They almost can't be bothered with it.

  66. It's too much like hard work.

  67. But here, Paul is speaking about the Christian

  68. in this sense of our physical strength as well.

  69. He's talking about this in the way of being an athlete.

  70. Pressing on towards the goal.

  71. Pressing on towards the prize that is before us.

  72. Like someone who is running a race.

  73. And when we think of our lives

  74. and the things that we would long to change,

  75. what is it that we would want to change most about ourselves?

  76. If you look at Paul and the way his life has changed,

  77. what is it that he is pressing on towards?

  78. To be more like Christ.

  79. And to recognise in all of his shortcomings,

  80. he's not obtained it,

  81. he's not already perfect,

  82. but this is what he is pressing on towards.

  83. And for ourselves,

  84. as we examine our lives just now,

  85. as we, God willing,

  86. go into a new season in our lives,

  87. our attitude could be one of so easily

  88. just to be like those who join a gym,

  89. but less than a month later,

  90. they've given up.

  91. We could have that kind of attitude as well.

  92. But instead,

  93. we are to have this attitude of Paul.

  94. And to live in this race.

  95. This race that the Lord has set out before each of us.

  96. Going it individually,

  97. going it collectively,

  98. but running this race,

  99. pressing on towards the goal.

  100. There are several places in the New Testament

  101. where the Christian life is looked at in this way.

  102. Very often,

  103. it's Paul himself who's looking at it,

  104. whether it's in Corinthians,

  105. Timothy,

  106. Hebrews.

  107. You find this illustration of

  108. running the race with patience,

  109. pressing on,

  110. straining towards the goal.

  111. And so here,

  112. he is again in Philippians,

  113. writing to them here,

  114. this letter of joy as it's described.

  115. He's writing to them

  116. to press on,

  117. to strain towards the goal,

  118. the joy that there is in Christ,

  119. and seeking to be more like him.

  120. And in so doing,

  121. he gives us some principles,

  122. if you like,

  123. for spiritual growth.

  124. things that we can put into our practice

  125. in our own lives.

  126. Using the athletic analogy,

  127. he's going to speak about

  128. how to get in shape spiritually,

  129. how to keep ourselves fit

  130. in the Christian life,

  131. and pressing on towards that goal,

  132. and pressing on in the race set before us.

  133. And the first principle is this,

  134. be in the race.

  135. Be in the race.

  136. If you think of the analogy

  137. of a race,

  138. a sporting event,

  139. there's a slogan

  140. that's often spoken of

  141. and true for every competitor.

  142. You have to be in it

  143. to win it.

  144. And here,

  145. Paul is reminding the church

  146. at Philippi

  147. of the race that they are to be in.

  148. Not to get sidelined

  149. into something else,

  150. but to be in the race

  151. that the Lord has set before them.

  152. Because even if you just look

  153. at Paul's own life,

  154. what race was Paul in?

  155. He wasn't just running this race

  156. to find forgiveness

  157. for his past.

  158. He wasn't keeping running this race

  159. just because of all

  160. that he had done wrong

  161. in the past.

  162. He wasn't running this race

  163. to make himself look good

  164. towards others,

  165. to please others.

  166. He is running this race

  167. for a real purpose.

  168. The purpose that we read of

  169. in verse 10 and 11.

  170. That I may know him

  171. and the power of his resurrection

  172. and may share his sufferings

  173. becoming like him in his death

  174. that by any means possible

  175. I may attain the resurrection

  176. from the dead.

  177. This is the race that he is in.

  178. Striving to be more Christ-like.

  179. How do you know

  180. if you are growing in grace?

  181. How do you look at yourself

  182. and think,

  183. maybe many of us probably

  184. don't think it,

  185. but how would you recognise

  186. if you are growing in grace?

  187. Well, it's maybe easier to answer

  188. to recognise

  189. how you're not growing in grace.

  190. If you think you've arrived,

  191. if you think you've made it,

  192. if you think you have everything

  193. you need now

  194. and you will cease to grow

  195. in the Lord.

  196. You're not pressing on

  197. towards the goal

  198. to be more like him.

  199. If you ever come to that point

  200. where you think that's it,

  201. well, you're no longer

  202. growing in grace.

  203. And so by the same token,

  204. when you're willing to admit

  205. that you need to humble yourself

  206. before God,

  207. when you're willing to admit

  208. that there are things

  209. that could be better in your life,

  210. areas that you need to grow,

  211. that is a sign

  212. that you're still pressing on.

  213. Pressing on towards the goal,

  214. just as Paul is saying here.

  215. Not that I've already obtained it,

  216. not that I'm already perfect,

  217. but I press on.

  218. I press on.

  219. I keep going.

  220. I recognise the race

  221. that the Lord has set before me

  222. and I will run it with him.

  223. I will run this race with patience,

  224. with my eyes fixed on Jesus.

  225. We are to be in this race,

  226. not to become complacent

  227. or forgetful

  228. or to think

  229. I cannot get any better,

  230. I cannot improve.

  231. There's always areas

  232. where we can be better.

  233. There's a car bumper sticker.

  234. I've not seen it

  235. in any cars here,

  236. but I've seen it advertised.

  237. And it says this,

  238. Christians aren't perfect,

  239. just forgiven.

  240. Now there's elements of truth in that,

  241. of course there is.

  242. But there's a danger in it as well.

  243. You have that in your car

  244. and you're going flying past

  245. other motorists

  246. or cutting in on them

  247. and they're seeing that on your car.

  248. What kind of Christian is that?

  249. And this is some kind of excuse

  250. that you can maybe give.

  251. Well, Christians aren't perfect,

  252. but we're forgiven.

  253. That's not the way it is at all.

  254. That would be the danger

  255. of just becoming complacent

  256. in our lives

  257. and thinking,

  258. well, I'm not perfect,

  259. but at least I'm forgiven.

  260. And the danger is

  261. we just do as we please,

  262. knowing,

  263. well, the Lord's going

  264. to forgive me anyway.

  265. Instead of being convicted in sin,

  266. we just carry on in sin.

  267. And that's the danger

  268. that Paul is addressing

  269. here in Philippi

  270. and in other churches

  271. throughout his day as well.

  272. He was addressing this danger

  273. that people just start

  274. slipping back

  275. into their old ways.

  276. They forget that the race

  277. that the Lord has set before them

  278. and they just go and live

  279. for themselves.

  280. So instead of placing on

  281. to be more Christ-like,

  282. we can just say,

  283. well, I'm not going to be

  284. perfect anyway.

  285. So let's just leave it

  286. at that.

  287. But by having that kind of attitude,

  288. we're forgetting

  289. the very reason

  290. why Christ came.

  291. We're now in playing

  292. what the Lord Jesus

  293. has done for us.

  294. Because as he says here,

  295. I press on to make it my own,

  296. because Christ Jesus

  297. has made me his own.

  298. Having this mind,

  299. he recognizes

  300. what Christ has done

  301. for him.

  302. And so,

  303. he's encouraging us

  304. to be a people

  305. like this as well.

  306. There are a lot of people

  307. trying to run the race

  308. for themselves

  309. instead of running

  310. for the Lord.

  311. And just look at

  312. how Paul thought

  313. he was doing

  314. everything right.

  315. Verse 4 to verse 6

  316. of this chapter

  317. which we read,

  318. he says,

  319. I have every reason

  320. for confidence

  321. in the flesh also.

  322. If anyone else thinks

  323. he has reason

  324. for confidence,

  325. I have more.

  326. Circumcised on the

  327. eighth day

  328. of the people of Israel.

  329. And so he goes on.

  330. He had all of these

  331. things going for him.

  332. All of these things

  333. that he thought,

  334. this is me running

  335. the race.

  336. He was sincere.

  337. He was dedicated.

  338. He was zealous

  339. in so many ways.

  340. But there was

  341. one major problem.

  342. He was not running

  343. for Christ.

  344. He was not running

  345. looking to him.

  346. He was running

  347. for himself.

  348. To be seen

  349. by others

  350. and the greatness

  351. of all of these

  352. things,

  353. of the people of Israel,

  354. of the tribe of Benjamin,

  355. a Hebrew of Hebrews,

  356. all of these things

  357. but not running

  358. for Christ.

  359. But now he says,

  360. I press on

  361. to make it my own.

  362. Why?

  363. Because Christ Jesus

  364. has made me

  365. his own.

  366. And we have to just

  367. understand

  368. what these words

  369. mean.

  370. Have you ever been

  371. arrested?

  372. Well, if you are

  373. a Christian,

  374. you have been.

  375. Not in the sense

  376. of the police

  377. laying their hands

  378. on you

  379. and putting you

  380. in cuffs.

  381. But that's what

  382. Paul describes

  383. here of what

  384. Christ Jesus

  385. has done

  386. for him.

  387. Christ Jesus

  388. has taken

  389. hold

  390. of me

  391. is another

  392. translation.

  393. Others say

  394. he has

  395. apprehended

  396. me.

  397. It's a very

  398. word

  399. for being

  400. arrested.

  401. Taken hold

  402. of

  403. by Christ.

  404. That's what's

  405. changed

  406. in Paul's

  407. life.

  408. This is what

  409. has brought

  410. him into the

  411. right race.

  412. This is what

  413. is keeping

  414. him going.

  415. This is what

  416. is making

  417. him focus

  418. on what

  419. lies ahead.

  420. Pressing on

  421. towards

  422. this goal.

  423. It is because

  424. Christ Jesus

  425. has arrested

  426. me.

  427. Too many

  428. Christians today

  429. are resisting

  430. arrest.

  431. Resisting

  432. Christ taking

  433. hold of them

  434. because of

  435. what it means.

  436. Because of

  437. all it entails.

  438. Christ Jesus

  439. being all

  440. in all

  441. for us.

  442. But Paul

  443. is reminding

  444. us here

  445. to press

  446. on

  447. towards

  448. that goal.

  449. Not

  450. resisting

  451. but allowing

  452. Christ to

  453. transform us

  454. fully.

  455. This means

  456. as we are

  457. arrested by

  458. Christ we are

  459. no longer

  460. our own.

  461. We belong

  462. to Christ.

  463. He has

  464. bought us

  465. with a

  466. price.

  467. And so

  468. our aim

  469. is to

  470. please

  471. him.

  472. So

  473. the first

  474. thing is

  475. to be

  476. in the

  477. right race.

  478. To be

  479. running

  480. for Christ.

  481. Taking

  482. hold of

  483. by him

  484. and going

  485. forward

  486. for him.

  487. The second

  488. principle we

  489. see here is

  490. don't be

  491. distracted.

  492. he says

  493. there in

  494. verse 13

  495. brothers I

  496. do not

  497. consider that

  498. I have

  499. made it

  500. my own

  501. but one

  502. thing I

  503. do.

  504. Forgetting

  505. what lies

  506. behind and

  507. straining

  508. forward to

  509. what lies

  510. ahead I

  511. press on

  512. towards the

  513. goal for

  514. the prize of

  515. the upward

  516. call of

  517. God in

  518. Christ Jesus.

  519. Paul could

  520. so easily

  521. have been

  522. distracted in

  523. this race.

  524. He could

  525. so easily

  526. have felt

  527. that he

  528. didn't even

  529. deserve to

  530. be in the

  531. race.

  532. And there's

  533. two ways

  534. that he

  535. describes the

  536. distractions

  537. that he

  538. has here.

  539. He speaks

  540. about the

  541. past.

  542. Forgetting

  543. what lies

  544. behind.

  545. We have

  546. all failed

  547. in the

  548. past.

  549. We've all

  550. fallen short

  551. of God's

  552. goals in

  553. our lives.

  554. But Paul

  555. looking at

  556. his own

  557. life he

  558. sees himself

  559. as failing

  560. in so many

  561. ways in

  562. his past.

  563. But what

  564. he doesn't

  565. let happen

  566. is that

  567. past to

  568. distract

  569. him.

  570. He says

  571. I'm not

  572. going to

  573. be constantly

  574. affected by

  575. it.

  576. I'm not

  577. going to

  578. be constantly

  579. held back

  580. or held

  581. down by

  582. my past.

  583. What he

  584. says is

  585. the pressing

  586. on is

  587. not being

  588. distracted by

  589. that but

  590. going forward

  591. forgetting

  592. what is

  593. behind.

  594. Not in

  595. the sense

  596. where it's

  597. all completely

  598. gone.

  599. He knows

  600. it's there.

  601. But he

  602. doesn't allow

  603. it to take

  604. his focus

  605. away.

  606. Just like

  607. an athlete

  608. in a race.

  609. If an

  610. athlete in a

  611. race is

  612. distracted by

  613. what's behind,

  614. if there's

  615. other athletes

  616. and the

  617. athlete's

  618. wondering how

  619. close are

  620. they behind

  621. me, if

  622. they start

  623. to look

  624. behind,

  625. they're going

  626. to fall

  627. away.

  628. They're going

  629. to lose

  630. their focus.

  631. And so

  632. Paul is

  633. saying here

  634. you fix

  635. your eyes

  636. forward.

  637. You realise

  638. what's behind

  639. you but

  640. you press

  641. on.

  642. And the

  643. same is

  644. true for

  645. ourselves as

  646. well.

  647. We are to

  648. press forward.

  649. Yes we know

  650. we all have

  651. things in our

  652. past.

  653. Maybe even

  654. in this past

  655. year we look

  656. at things and

  657. we regret and

  658. we wish we

  659. hadn't done or

  660. we wish we

  661. had done.

  662. But we

  663. don't let

  664. that hold

  665. us back.

  666. We don't

  667. let that make

  668. us feel

  669. we're unworthy

  670. to go on

  671. in this race.

  672. But we

  673. press forward.

  674. We press

  675. on to

  676. know Christ

  677. Jesus and

  678. to serve

  679. him more.

  680. It's like

  681. someone once

  682. said if you

  683. always drive

  684. the car

  685. looking in

  686. the rear view

  687. mirror you're

  688. always going

  689. to end up in

  690. the ditch at

  691. some point.

  692. You've got to

  693. look at what

  694. lies ahead.

  695. sometimes we

  696. have to just

  697. let the past

  698. go.

  699. Not in the

  700. sense of

  701. forgetting it

  702. completely but

  703. not letting it

  704. hold us

  705. back.

  706. There's another

  707. way he warns

  708. of not being

  709. distracted either.

  710. It's not to

  711. think that we've

  712. made it.

  713. Brothers I do

  714. not consider

  715. that I've made

  716. it my own.

  717. He hasn't done

  718. it for himself.

  719. He could say

  720. maybe he's

  721. been a

  722. Christian for

  723. a long time.

  724. 20, 25,

  725. 30 years a

  726. Christian.

  727. Maybe even

  728. more you could

  729. think well

  730. that's it.

  731. I've made it.

  732. I've given

  733. my part.

  734. I've done

  735. my bit.

  736. It's time to

  737. maybe just sit

  738. back and take

  739. it easy for a

  740. while.

  741. But he says

  742. no.

  743. He's pressing

  744. on.

  745. He says

  746. press on.

  747. Keep going.

  748. Don't think

  749. you've arrived.

  750. Just press

  751. on with your

  752. eyes fixed

  753. on Jesus.

  754. What he

  755. says then is

  756. crucial in

  757. this as well.

  758. He says

  759. I press on

  760. towards the

  761. goal.

  762. The one

  763. thing I do.

  764. One thing

  765. I do.

  766. Forgetting

  767. what lies

  768. behind and

  769. straining

  770. towards what

  771. lies ahead.

  772. I press

  773. on.

  774. The one

  775. thing I

  776. do.

  777. Again

  778. it's like

  779. Paul has

  780. this athlete

  781. in mind

  782. where their

  783. focus is on

  784. the race.

  785. Nothing

  786. else.

  787. This one

  788. thing.

  789. Paul was

  790. of this

  791. mind

  792. himself.

  793. For me

  794. to live

  795. is Christ.

  796. That's what

  797. he says

  798. says earlier

  799. in

  800. Philippines.

  801. For me

  802. to live

  803. is Christ.

  804. He has

  805. this mind

  806. in him.

  807. This one

  808. thing I

  809. do.

  810. One of the

  811. problems of

  812. the modern

  813. Christian life

  814. indeed all

  815. life just

  816. now is

  817. there's so

  818. many things

  819. for us.

  820. No one

  821. can say

  822. this one

  823. thing I

  824. do.

  825. Because we're

  826. all trying

  827. to do so

  828. much.

  829. We're pulled

  830. in different

  831. directions all

  832. the time.

  833. But Paul

  834. is saying

  835. refocus.

  836. Refocus.

  837. And this

  838. one thing

  839. is what is

  840. needful.

  841. To press

  842. on towards

  843. this prize.

  844. This high

  845. goal.

  846. This prize

  847. of the upward

  848. call of God

  849. in Christ

  850. Jesus.

  851. So whatever

  852. we do,

  853. we do as

  854. to the

  855. Lord.

  856. As it says,

  857. Jesus taught

  858. himself,

  859. seek first

  860. the kingdom

  861. of God.

  862. Seek first

  863. this one

  864. thing.

  865. Have this

  866. mind,

  867. he says.

  868. Have this

  869. aim in

  870. your life.

  871. Press on

  872. towards

  873. this mark.

  874. You could

  875. say,

  876. we don't

  877. do things

  878. to please

  879. others.

  880. Don't do

  881. things to

  882. please

  883. myself.

  884. I seek

  885. to please

  886. God.

  887. And Paul

  888. himself could

  889. say later

  890. on in his

  891. life, as he

  892. was an

  893. older man,

  894. as he came

  895. to reach

  896. this goal

  897. in his

  898. life, he

  899. says in

  900. 2 Timothy 4

    2 Timothy 4:6

  901. verse 6

  902. and 7,

  903. for I

  904. am already

  905. being poured

  906. out as

  907. a drink

  908. offering and

  909. the time

  910. of my

  911. departure

  912. has come.

  913. I have

  914. fought the

  915. good fight.

  916. I have

  917. finished the

  918. race.

  919. I have

  920. kept the

  921. faith.

  922. And that

  923. is a

  924. wonderful

  925. testimony

  926. for any

  927. Christian

  928. to have.

  929. I have

  930. fought the

  931. good fight.

  932. I have

  933. finished the

  934. race.

  935. I have

  936. kept the

  937. faith.

  938. faith.

  939. That is

  940. what Paul

  941. is encouraging

  942. us to

  943. hear in

  944. these words

  945. to the

  946. Philippians.

  947. That we

  948. press on

  949. towards the

  950. goal.

  951. Fight the

  952. good fight.

  953. Keep the

  954. faith.

  955. The third

  956. and final

  957. thing is,

  958. the third

  959. principle,

  960. have the

  961. right attitude.

  962. Let those

  963. of us in

  964. verse 15

  965. who are

  966. mature think

  967. this way.

  968. And if

  969. anything you

  970. think otherwise,

  971. God will

  972. reveal that

  973. also to

  974. you.

  975. Only let

  976. us hold

  977. true to

  978. what we

  979. have

  980. attained.

  981. When we

  982. think of

  983. athletes and

  984. sports people,

  985. we so often

  986. think of the

  987. difference that

  988. the right

  989. attitude makes.

  990. The attitude

  991. makes a

  992. difference between

  993. defeat and

  994. victory,

  995. success and

  996. failure.

  997. So often

  998. you see maybe

  999. an athlete or

  1000. even teams

  1001. who lack

  1002. the same

  1003. talent as

  1004. others,

  1005. but because

  1006. of the

  1007. right mindset,

  1008. because of

  1009. the right

  1010. attitude going

  1011. into it,

  1012. they come

  1013. out on top.

  1014. Attitude is

  1015. crucial in

  1016. sport and

  1017. Paul is saying

  1018. it's crucial in

  1019. our lives too.

  1020. In the life of

  1021. the Christian,

  1022. our attitude

  1023. is crucial.

  1024. He speaks

  1025. here so often

  1026. in this letter

  1027. of having

  1028. this right

  1029. mind.

  1030. Verse 15,

  1031. let those of

  1032. us who are

  1033. mature think

  1034. this way.

  1035. Have this

  1036. mind, he's

  1037. saying there.

  1038. He said it

  1039. already in

  1040. this letter,

  1041. for example,

  1042. chapter 2,

  1043. verse 2,

  1044. complete my

  1045. joy by being

  1046. of the same

  1047. mind.

  1048. Chapter 2,

  1049. verse 5,

  1050. have this

  1051. mind among

  1052. yourselves,

  1053. which is

  1054. yours in

  1055. Christ Jesus.

  1056. The word

  1057. for mind

  1058. is used

  1059. ten times

  1060. in

  1061. Philippines.

  1062. Nearly

  1063. half as

  1064. much as

  1065. it's used

  1066. in the

  1067. New Testament,

  1068. it's used

  1069. in this

  1070. letter,

  1071. the letter

  1072. of joy.

  1073. And so

  1074. you see

  1075. here,

  1076. linked to

  1077. joy is

  1078. having this

  1079. mind,

  1080. this attitude.

  1081. The two

  1082. go hand

  1083. in hand.

  1084. And so

  1085. Paul,

  1086. as he's

  1087. summing up

  1088. here,

  1089. would be

  1090. saying,

  1091. have this

  1092. right attitude,

  1093. have this

  1094. mind in

  1095. you,

  1096. pressing on

  1097. towards the

  1098. goal.

  1099. Not seeing

  1100. this as

  1101. something that's

  1102. just,

  1103. oh,

  1104. I've just

  1105. got to

  1106. try and

  1107. do it.

  1108. It's not

  1109. what I

  1110. really want

  1111. to be

  1112. doing it.

  1113. It's to

  1114. have this

  1115. right attitude,

  1116. the joy

  1117. of the

  1118. Lord,

  1119. knowing that

  1120. we are

  1121. doing it

  1122. for him,

  1123. knowing the

  1124. privilege that

  1125. is ours,

  1126. as was said

  1127. in the

  1128. prayers this

  1129. evening as

  1130. we sang in

  1131. Psalm 122,

  1132. I

  1133. joyed when

  1134. to the

  1135. house of

  1136. God

  1137. go up

  1138. they said

  1139. to me.

  1140. I went

  1141. there with

  1142. joy.

  1143. I went

  1144. there to

  1145. be with

  1146. God's

  1147. people.

  1148. I went

  1149. there to

  1150. be with

  1151. a praying

  1152. people,

  1153. a fellow

  1154. people,

  1155. brothers and

  1156. sisters in

  1157. Christ.

  1158. This

  1159. right

  1160. attitude.

  1161. So

  1162. whatever we're

  1163. doing,

  1164. if we're

  1165. serving the

  1166. Lord,

  1167. it's doing

  1168. it for

  1169. him.

  1170. Not doing

  1171. something because

  1172. the ministers

  1173. asked.

  1174. not doing

  1175. something to

  1176. try and

  1177. please others,

  1178. but doing

  1179. it as a

  1180. sense of

  1181. joy for

  1182. the Lord.

  1183. Let those

  1184. of us who

  1185. mature think

  1186. this way.

  1187. And if in

  1188. anything you

  1189. think otherwise,

  1190. God will

  1191. reveal that

  1192. also to

  1193. you.

  1194. He is

  1195. saying,

  1196. press on

  1197. in this

  1198. way.

  1199. Go

  1200. forward in

  1201. this strength,

  1202. in this

  1203. right attitude

  1204. of joy to

  1205. the Lord.

  1206. It was a

  1207. story told

  1208. about when

  1209. Sir

  1210. Christopher

  1211. Wren was

  1212. constructing

  1213. cathedrals in

  1214. London.

  1215. Not sure how

  1216. many of the

  1217. churches in

  1218. London he

  1219. built, but

  1220. there are

  1221. enormous amount

  1222. of them were

  1223. designed and

  1224. built by

  1225. Sir

  1226. Christopher

  1227. Wren.

  1228. And there

  1229. was people

  1230. working on

  1231. these cathedrals,

  1232. these churches,

  1233. when they were

  1234. being built.

  1235. And it was

  1236. something that

  1237. was being

  1238. spoken about

  1239. quite a lot

  1240. in the

  1241. time.

  1242. And a

  1243. journalist

  1244. thought that

  1245. he would

  1246. go and

  1247. interview some

  1248. of the

  1249. workers that

  1250. were working

  1251. on the

  1252. buildings.

  1253. And he

  1254. asked three

  1255. different people

  1256. who were

  1257. working,

  1258. what is it

  1259. that you're

  1260. doing?

  1261. The first

  1262. person he

  1263. replied to

  1264. him asked

  1265. the question,

  1266. what are you

  1267. doing?

  1268. He said,

  1269. I'm cutting

  1270. stone for

  1271. ten shillings

  1272. a day.

  1273. second person

  1274. he asked

  1275. the same

  1276. question to,

  1277. what are

  1278. you doing?

  1279. I'm putting

  1280. in ten

  1281. hours a

  1282. day on

  1283. this job.

  1284. The third

  1285. person he

  1286. asked,

  1287. what are

  1288. you doing?

  1289. He said,

  1290. I'm helping

  1291. Christopher

  1292. Wren construct

  1293. one of

  1294. London's

  1295. greatest

  1296. cathedrals.

  1297. You see

  1298. the difference

  1299. in the

  1300. attitude.

  1301. One saw

  1302. it as

  1303. working for

  1304. money.

  1305. One saw

  1306. it as

  1307. just a

  1308. hard day's

  1309. labour,

  1310. ten hours,

  1311. but one

  1312. had a

  1313. greater

  1314. vision,

  1315. a better

  1316. vision,

  1317. a vision

  1318. that encouraged

  1319. going on

  1320. and gave

  1321. them an

  1322. attitude

  1323. that was

  1324. right for

  1325. going forward.

  1326. I'm

  1327. helping

  1328. Sir

  1329. Christopher

  1330. Wren

  1331. construct

  1332. one of

  1333. London's

  1334. greatest

  1335. cathedrals.

  1336. So what's

  1337. our attitude

  1338. and service

  1339. for the

  1340. Lord?

  1341. Are we

  1342. thinking to

  1343. ourselves

  1344. just putting

  1345. in a

  1346. ten-hour

  1347. day here?

  1348. Are we

  1349. thinking to

  1350. ourselves

  1351. I'm just

  1352. putting my

  1353. money into

  1354. this and

  1355. nothing else?

  1356. Or do we

  1357. see it as

  1358. being involved

  1359. in the

  1360. kingdom of

  1361. God?

  1362. I am

  1363. serving the

  1364. Lord with

  1365. all my

  1366. heart that

  1367. his kingdom

  1368. may be built

  1369. and come in

  1370. power here.

  1371. Attitude

  1372. makes such

  1373. a difference.

  1374. So Paul

  1375. is saying

  1376. to us

  1377. here in

  1378. all of

  1379. these

  1380. principles

  1381. be in

  1382. the right

  1383. race.

  1384. See

  1385. yourselves

  1386. as running

  1387. for Christ.

  1388. Don't be

  1389. distracted

  1390. as you

  1391. go on.

  1392. Don't let

  1393. the past

  1394. or the

  1395. present

  1396. hold you

  1397. back but

  1398. press on

  1399. towards the

  1400. goal.

  1401. And then

  1402. finally just

  1403. see who

  1404. you are

  1405. doing it

  1406. for.

  1407. See

  1408. that this

  1409. is all

  1410. for Christ.

  1411. We are

  1412. part of

  1413. his

  1414. kingdom.

  1415. We are

  1416. part of

  1417. his

  1418. church.

  1419. And we

  1420. have that

  1421. promise

  1422. that his

  1423. church

  1424. will be

  1425. built.

  1426. So let's

  1427. not be

  1428. discouraged.

  1429. But let's

  1430. go forward

  1431. pressing on

  1432. encouraged

  1433. with the

  1434. right attitude

  1435. with the

  1436. right mindset

  1437. that God

  1438. can and

  1439. will

  1440. do great

  1441. things for

  1442. us as

  1443. we look

  1444. to him

  1445. and trust

  1446. in him.

  1447. May God

  1448. bless his

  1449. word to

  1450. us.

  1451. We are

  1452. going to

  1453. sing in

  1454. conclusion to

  1455. God's

  1456. praise in

  1457. Psalm

  1458. 119.

  1459. It's

  1460. the

  1461. Sing

  1462. Psalms

  1463. version,

  1464. page 159,

  1465. verse 33.

  1466. Psalm

  1467. 119 at

  1468. verse 33.

  1469. Teach me to

  1470. follow your

  1471. decrees,

  1472. and I will

  1473. keep them

  1474. to the

  1475. end.

  1476. Give

  1477. insight,

  1478. and I'll

  1479. keep your

  1480. law,

  1481. with all

  1482. my heart

  1483. to it

  1484. attend.

  1485. We'll sing

  1486. this section,

  1487. verse 33

  1488. to 40,

  1489. to God's

  1490. praise.

  1491. teach me to

  1492. follow your

  1493. decrees,

  1494. then I

  1495. will keep

  1496. them to

  1497. the end.

  1498. give in

  1499. give in

  1500. sight,

  1501. and I'll

  1502. keep

  1503. your

  1504. law,

  1505. with all

  1506. my

  1507. heart

  1508. to

  1509. it

  1510. attain.

  1511. lead me

  1512. in

  1513. your

  1514. commandment

  1515. path,

  1516. for

  1517. then,

  1518. O Lord,

  1519. delight

  1520. I

  1521. find,

  1522. word high,

  1523. hypersive,

  1524. lift me

  1525. toward my

  1526. eyes,

  1527. regardless of

1528. O turn my eyes from worthless things, give life according to your word.

1529. To meet your servant, keep your pledge, so that you may be feared, O Lord.

1530. Remove from me the shame, my friend.

1531. Your laws excel in a bright red.

1532. O how I long for your dequease.

1533. Preserve me in your righteousness.

  1534. Amen.

1535. Now may grace, mercy and peace from God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit rest upon and abide with you all now and forevermore.

  1536. Amen.

  1537. Amen.

  1538. Amen.

  1539. Amen.

  1540. Amen.

  1541. Amen.
