  1. Return with me now please to Paul's letter to the Philippians, sorry to the Ephesians, I'm getting ahead of myself.

  2. It's Ephesians chapter 6.

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  3. Tonight we're going to look at verse 17, the first part of verse 17.

  4. As you can see verse 17 mentions two parts of the armour that we've been going through over the past number of weeks.

  5. So verse 17 mentions the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God.

  6. We're just going to confine our thoughts tonight to the first of these, this helmet of salvation.

  7. We've been looking at the various parts of the armour as we've gone through them.

  8. We've noticed at times that there's a specific connection between some of them.

  9. And that's the case spiritually, of course, as well, even more so than it was in the case of the Roman soldier, who's used here as a picture or analogy of a spiritual armour.

  10. And we'll see that that's the same tonight as we come to the helmet of salvation.

  11. It has a specific connection with the word of God, with the gospel.

  12. Verse 15, shoes for your feet, having on the readiness given by the gospel of peace, but also what is mentioned, the belt of truth in verse 14.

  13. Because the belt of truth in many ways, as we saw it going round the waist of the Roman soldier and keeping things in place,

  14. it's always the case that spiritually we come back to the belt of truth because it's foundational to our progress and to our security.

  15. So as we look at verse 17 tonight, obviously, it has to do with the helmet of the Roman soldier, which protected the head, one of the most important parts of the body.

  16. Obviously, if the head was damaged, then the whole person was really out of action and would not be able to carry out their duties as required.

  17. So let's look at this helmet in the spiritual sense of it.

  18. And first of all, try and work out what exactly it means.

  19. It's called the helmet of salvation.

  20. Is it salvation in its entirety?

  21. What does the word salvation actually indicate there?

  22. And I think there's a clue to this in the passage we read in 1 Thessalonians chapter 5,

    1 Thessalonians 5 chapter mention

  23. and especially the words of verse 8 there.

  24. You recall as we read through that, since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet, the hope of salvation.

  25. So it's narrowing it down there to the hope of salvation.

  26. In other words, it's not salvation in the broadest sense.

  27. It's salvation in a more narrow, specific sense.

  28. And I think we can take that into chapter 6 of Ephesians as well, because the Thessalonian passage gives us an insight into the working of Paul's mind in regard to this.

  29. Now, the context, as you recall, in Thessalonians is one of Paul encouraging them to encourage one another.

  30. They were looking forward to the coming of Christ.

  31. Some actually were a bit concerned or even confused about how that would be in terms of in relation to those who had passed on from this life.

  32. And you recall in chapter 4 that he deals with that specific problem, that the Lord will come with the sound of the trumpet of God.

  33. The dead in Christ will rise first.

  34. We then who are alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the air to meet the Lord in the air.

  35. We will always be with the Lord.

  36. Therefore, encourage one another with these words.

  37. And then in chapter 5, as we read, verse 11, therefore, encourage one another and build one another up just as you are doing.

  38. So it's very much to do with the context or the purpose of Paul of encouraging these Thessalonians,

  39. encouraging this young church as they wrestled with theological problems,

  40. but also like the Ephesians as they wrestled against spiritual darkness and against decline,

  41. even amongst some of the people who had come to follow the Lord.

  42. And the context of encouraging one another there in 1 Thessalonians is set in the context of Christ's return,

  43. set in the context of looking forward in hope to the arrival of the Lord Jesus Christ as promised by himself

  44. and by the teachings of God's word when he left this world to return to glory.

  45. So salvation in this context really has that narrower focus.

  46. And indeed, you'll find that in other contexts as well.

  47. 1 Peter, for example, begins his epistle by reflecting on how the resurrection of Jesus Christ brought them all to a living hope.

  48. God had done this by the resurrection of Christ to a living hope.

  49. To you who are called, he said, you who are kept by the power of God through faith

  50. unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

  51. Now he's talking there of, Peter is talking there of salvation ready to be revealed.

  52. And he knows very well that salvation has already been revealed.

  53. So he's talking again more narrowly, more focused on salvation in the sense of what is going to appear at the coming of Christ.

  54. What is going to be made known then, that is not necessarily as clear now, but certainly hasn't yet been realized,

  55. hasn't been accomplished in the sense of it hasn't taken place.

  56. And here you can import that into your thinking in Ephesians here and verse 17.

  57. Take the helmet of salvation.

  58. And if you think in that narrower focus as the hope of salvation, as the helmet covered the head physically,

  59. So the hope of salvation is something that looks forward to the future in hope,

  60. but also is such an important and integral aspect of the Christian's life.

  61. The Christian looking forward in hope is itself an antidote to discouragement,

  62. an antidote, as we saw there in 1 Thessalonians 5,

  63. to the discouragement that is so easily comes and drifts into our lives.

  64. So if you think about the helmet in the ordinary sense, in the natural sense of protecting the head,

  65. I think we can say that spiritually the helmet is there to protect the mind.

  66. The mind, as it works through the issues that God has revealed, comes to certain conclusions.

  67. God has given us the spirit of a sound mind.

  68. He's opened our mind.

  69. He's given us the kind of mind that wants to learn more and more of the truth of God,

  70. learn more from the word of God.

  71. And as that is the case, so it is something which nourishes your hope as you look towards the future,

  72. among other things.

  73. Of course, it does more than that, but we're focusing on the hope of salvation

  74. as it's represented by this helmet, this helmet of the Roman soldier.

  75. And the Christian mind, as it thinks ahead, is a mind that is able to think clearly

  76. because you have the benefit of God's word clearly stating

  77. that the things that are hoped for are already secure.

  78. They're not things that are waiting to be worked through and brought to realization or accomplishment.

  79. The fact that Jesus has gone to glory and is at the right hand of God the Father,

  80. the fact that he has accomplished redemption on earth,

  81. the fact that the spirit of God has come as promised,

  82. and that Christ the Son and the Father are present through that spirit in the hearts of God's people,

  83. that itself is something that is already the case.

  84. And the word of God brings it to us so often that that has already been accomplished.

  85. So hope in this sense, as you put on the helmet of hope,

  86. as you exercise hope every day in Christ,

  87. you're not dealing with something that's uncertain,

  88. something that is still somehow unclear.

  89. Sometimes we use the word hope, of course, and we mentioned this more than once.

  90. We use the word hope in the ordinary, everyday sense of hope,

  91. like hoping for the best or hoping something will actually come to take place,

  92. or whatever it may be.

  93. We're hoping it might be realized.

  94. We're hoping it will come to pass.

  95. We have no confidence that can say for sure it will.

  96. But here, in the word that God has given us,

  97. this belt of truth that's fastened on,

  98. it's something that comes through the workings of your mind

  99. to focus upon those certainties on which your hope is based,

  100. on which your hope rests.

  101. Because you're not here tonight as Christians,

  102. exercising the mind that God has given you,

  103. and somehow doubtful about things that are foundational for your hope.

  104. Christ has died.

  105. Christ has risen from the dead.

  106. Christ is at the right hand of glory.

  107. And all the way through the scripture, especially Paul's epistles,

  108. you'll find him referring to these great facts,

  109. facts accomplished already as the very ground of our hopes,

  110. the very ground of the Christian hope,

  111. that salvation that's certain,

  112. that God has said is already accomplished,

  113. that will remain to be,

  114. that remains to be finally crowned at the appearance of Christ.

  115. Well, what he's saying is,

  116. in order to face the issues of the day,

  117. and especially to face the enemy,

  118. to face the spiritual darkness that we all wrestle against,

  119. as we saw at the beginning of this passage,

  120. take the helmet of salvation,

  121. take the hope of salvation,

  122. take that hope that penetrates forward into the future,

  123. not as an unknown future,

  124. though there are many events in the course of life

  125. that will remain unknown.

  126. But these are not unknowns.

  127. These are the actual verities,

  128. the truths,

  129. the certainties of what God has already done,

  130. and of what God in his word has promised,

  131. will yet be fulfilled.

  132. So that's something about the spiritual helmet.

  133. We're focusing it down,

  134. following 1 Thessalonians 5,

  135. to the hope of salvation,

  136. to the final stage of salvation,

  137. with the coming of Christ.

  138. And Paul is there,

  139. and also here in Ephesians,

  140. drawing the minds of the Ephesians

  141. to that particular issue.

  142. So that it's looking forward to projecting into the future.

  143. So which temptation especially is addressed

  144. by this particular emphasis on the hope of salvation

  145. or the helmet of salvation?

  146. Well, the second point,

  147. and we looked at the spiritual helmet briefly,

  148. is to look at how we need to keep up the fight,

  149. to keep up our resistance,

  150. and indeed our attack of the enemy as well,

  151. whatever forms we find the enemy actually coming to assault us.

  152. And the particular temptation,

  153. I think, that's in mind here

  154. for the use of the helmet of salvation

  155. or the hope of salvation,

  156. is the temptation to lose heart.

  157. The temptation to recede,

  158. the temptation to go back,

  159. the temptation just to, if not almost give up,

  160. then certainly progress towards that.

  161. The temptation to become disillusioned

  162. with the Christian life.

  163. The temptation to be disillusioned

  164. even with Jesus himself

  165. when things are not going so well

  166. in our lives generally.

  167. The temptation even towards thinking,

  168. is there any point to this at all?

  169. Remember how in Ephesians chapter,

  170. sorry, in Hebrews chapter 12,

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  171. you find that there's an exhortation there

  172. to look to Jesus,

  173. the author and finisher of our faith.

  174. And in Hebrews 12 and verse 3,

  175. the writer there is actually looking

  176. in a similar situation

  177. to what you have here in Ephesians.

  178. Remember that Hebrews is very much

  179. an epistle given towards

  180. those who are tempted to

  181. give up following Christ,

  182. giving up the profession

  183. they've made of faith in Christ.

  184. And then he says,

  185. it was through 11,

  186. as you know, chapter 11,

  187. that great cloud of witnesses,

  188. as he calls it,

  189. in verse 1 of chapter 12,

  190. let us lay aside every weight

  191. and the sin which clings so closely.

  192. Let us run with endurance,

  193. the word which means perseverance.

  194. Let's not give up the struggle.

  195. Let's not give up the fight.

  196. He's saying,

  197. the race that is set before us,

  198. looking to Jesus,

  199. the founder and perfecter of our faith,

  200. who for the joy that was set before him

  201. endured the cross,

  202. despising the shame

  203. and is seated at the right hand

  204. of the throne of God.

  205. In other words,

  206. we are exhorted

  207. when the temptation comes

  208. to slacken in the race

  209. or to withdraw from the race,

  210. as Hebrews 12 puts it.

  211. We are encouraged to look to Jesus.

  212. And why are we looking to Jesus?

  213. Because he's not only the savior

  214. in the sense of being foundational

  215. to our faith,

  216. to our Christian life.

  217. He's also our supreme example

  218. of perseverance,

  219. of pressing on,

  220. of not giving up,

  221. of not giving up on the fight.

  222. That's why he said there,

  223. he endured the cross

  224. for the joy that was set before him.

  225. In other words,

  226. the saint Jesus

  227. was looking ahead of himself

  228. as he lived in this world,

  229. looking ahead even beyond the cross,

  230. looking at the reality of the cross

  231. and all of that would entail for himself.

  232. But for the joy that was set before him,

  233. for that which was promised him

  234. beyond this world,

  235. beyond the resurrection,

  236. beyond exaltation,

  237. beyond the cross,

  238. he endured the cross

  239. for the joy that was set before him.

  240. In other words,

  241. you could say

  242. there's a sense in which

  243. there's certainly an affinity

  244. with the hope

  245. that Christians,

  246. that is people have

  247. in looking beyond the current life,

  248. the current circumstances,

  249. the current situation,

  250. to the fulfillment of the promises

  251. at the coming

  252. of Jesus Christ himself.

  253. And when that takes place

  254. and that aspect of salvation

  255. is then actually realized

  256. and fulfilled,

  257. then the promises will be

  258. enjoyed by his people.

  259. So that letter of Hebrews,

  260. the letter of exhortation,

  261. is a letter that is

  262. very much in line with Ephesians here

  263. in terms of encouraging us

  264. to actually not give up.

  265. Remember,

  266. all the way through Hebrews,

  267. you've got references to Israel,

  268. references to the Old Testament

  269. and Israel in the progress

  270. that they made through

  271. the Old Testament

  272. in the desert.

  273. And so often in Hebrews,

  274. they are an example

  275. of not persevering.

  276. They are an example

  277. of giving up.

  278. An example of not actually

  279. pushing through

  280. and persevering

  281. into the land of promise.

  282. And that's why the writer

  283. is saying,

  284. we have them as our example

  285. so that we don't follow

  286. the same sort of path

  287. they followed

  288. because they all fell

  289. in the wilderness,

  290. is the writer's word for it.

  291. And apart from two,

  292. they did not enter

  293. into the land

  294. that God had promised them.

  295. And so,

  296. we actually have

  297. the helmet of salvation,

  298. the hope of salvation,

  299. the wilderness hardships

  300. that Israel experienced.

  301. And this is the contact point

  302. with ourselves.

  303. the wilderness hardships

  304. that they experienced

  305. actually gave the devil

  306. an entry point.

  307. An entry point towards

  308. just them giving up

  309. the struggles.

  310. An entry point towards

  311. them going back.

  312. They wanted back to Egypt.

  313. Remember how soon

  314. after leaving Egypt,

  315. they were saying to Moses,

  316. why have you brought us out here

  317. to die in this wilderness?

  318. We wish we were back

  319. in Egypt with the food

  320. that we enjoyed in Eden.

  321. There's nothing in Egypt.

  322. There's nothing here

  323. for us in this wilderness.

  324. And that's what the devil

  325. is actually always setting out

  326. to tempt you towards

  327. thinking and concluding

  328. along those lines.

  329. That somehow or other,

  330. the struggles of the Christian life

  331. are not really worth it

  332. after all.

  333. So as you take up

  334. this helmet,

  335. you use it,

  336. first of all,

  337. against what we can call

  338. spiritual pacifism.

  339. You know that a pacifist

  340. in the ordinary sense

  341. is somebody who,

  342. because of their strong

  343. views against war,

  344. they exercise

  345. the liberty of not actually

  346. taking up the opportunity

  347. of engaging with an enemy

  348. in a time of war.

  349. There were pacifists.

  350. There were people

  351. who are pacifists

  352. in every generation.

  353. That was their liberty

  354. that they had

  355. to live like that,

  356. to have that conclusion.

  357. And so they withdrew

  358. from active engagement

  359. in times of war

  360. in army or navy

  361. or air force or whatever.

  362. Well, there's a kind of

  363. spiritual pacifism as well

  364. that the devil,

  365. these powers that are mentioned there,

  366. the schemes of the devil,

  367. wrestling not against flesh and blood,

  368. but against these present darkness,

  369. the spiritual forces of evil,

  370. need the spiritual helmet.

  371. You need this hope of salvation

  372. because he wants to persuade you

  373. that because life is so difficult

  374. as a Christian,

  375. is it really worth going on?

  376. There's a pacifism

  377. that really wants you to conclude

  378. that it's all right

  379. being a Christian

  380. in an ordinary sense,

  381. but if only we could take

  382. the struggles

  383. out of the Christian life.

  384. And really,

  385. that's what the devil

  386. wants to persuade you of,

  387. that the struggles

  388. of the Christian life

  389. really have no meaning

  390. or no purpose

  391. or little purpose

  392. or little value.

  393. Whereas when you go

  394. through the likes of Ephesians

  395. and Paul's other letters

  396. in the New Testament

  397. and the writings

  398. of the psalmist

  399. in the Old Testament,

  400. as well as the prophecies

  401. of some of the prophets

  402. and the struggles

  403. they had to endure,

  404. it becomes obvious

  405. pretty quickly.

  406. Not only are there struggles

  407. in the Christian life,

  408. but there are beneficial struggles.

  409. There are struggles

  410. which fit into God's program

  411. of their redemption,

  412. of their sanctification,

  413. especially.

  414. And that spiritual pacifism

  415. is something

  416. that the devil

  417. will seek to make

  418. very attractive to you.

  419. And you know,

  420. there's a form of it

  421. which maybe doesn't go

  422. as far as withdrawing

  423. altogether,

  424. but there's a form of it

  425. that we're very familiar with,

  426. of a kind of Christianity

  427. that just goes through

  428. the motions,

  429. as it were,

  430. or a nominalism,

  431. belonging to a church

  432. and saying,

  433. yes, I'm a Christian,

  434. but no real engagement

  435. with any of the spiritual

  436. enemies of the gospel,

  437. no real engagement

  438. positively for Christ

  439. in this world

  440. by way of witnessing for him,

  441. by way of confessing him openly.

  442. There's a kind of

  443. spiritual withdrawal

  444. in that sense,

  445. that pacifism.

  446. Well, here is the apostle saying,

  447. take up this helmet

  448. of the hope of salvation.

  449. And because of the wonderful

  450. certainties

  451. of what are set out

  452. at the return of Christ

  453. for you,

  454. encourage one another,

  455. strengthen one another,

  456. be involved

  457. in the way of

  458. giving each other

  459. the support

  460. and the encouragement

  461. towards that final return

  462. of Christ

  463. that all of us need.

  464. Every single Christian

  465. needs,

  466. at some point,

  467. encouragement

  468. from other Christians.

  469. That's one of the reasons

  470. we actually value

  471. the wonderful privilege

  472. of belonging

  473. to the body of Christ,

  474. of belonging

  475. to that church

  476. of Christ on earth.

  477. So it's an antidote

  478. against a spiritual pacifism,

  479. but it's also

  480. an antidote

  481. at what you can call

  482. defeatism.

  483. I mentioned some of that

  484. just in a few moments ago.

  485. When you see

  486. the state of things

  487. in the world,

  488. when you see

  489. the extent

  490. to which

  491. what we'll call

  492. the world

  493. has rebelled

  494. against God

  495. and rebels

  496. against the gospel

  497. and rebels

  498. against the law

  499. of God

  500. and rebels

  501. against the testimonies

  502. of history

  503. in the church,

  504. when you actually

  505. take a view

  506. of the church

  507. itself

  508. in the widest

  509. possible sense,

  510. well,

  511. the devil will suggest

  512. to you,

  513. is there really

  514. any point

  515. to being a Christian?

  516. Is there any point

  517. to belonging

  518. to a church?

  519. Look at the state

  520. of the world.

  521. It's not made

  522. any difference

  523. in your lifetime.

  524. Why should you

  525. actually go on

  526. with these struggles?

  527. It's not made

  528. any difference.

  529. Things are going on

  530. just as they were.

  531. People aren't at all

  532. interested in Christ.

  533. When you think

  534. of the struggles

  535. that people have

  536. for the gospel,

  537. struggles with regard

  538. to standing

  539. for the rights

  540. of Jesus,

  541. the devil will come.

  542. Well, the gospel

  543. is just not going

  544. to win anyway,

  545. so what's the point?

  546. Forget about evangelism.

  547. Forget about your own

  548. personal advancement

  549. and holiness

  550. of life.

  551. Forget about your

  552. own perseverance

  553. and looking onwards

  554. in hope,

  555. because when you

  556. focus on the present,

  557. as the devil will

  558. suggest to you,

  559. that's really all

  560. that matters.

  561. Just as 2 Peter

  562. would say,

  563. those who are facing,

  564. those the church

  565. was facing then

  566. were facing the idea

  567. of, well,

  568. where is the promise

  569. of his coming?

  570. Everything remains

  571. just as it was.

  572. There's a kind

  573. of pointlessness

  574. suggested and thrown

  575. at you.

  576. when you think

  577. of what it is

  578. to be a Christian

  579. and the struggles

  580. of the Christian life.

  581. Of course,

  582. what he's telling us

  583. here,

  584. and you find it

  585. abundantly throughout

  586. Paul's writings,

  587. is that you counter

  588. that with taking

  589. an account

  590. of eternity.

  591. This is not all

  592. about the present life.

  593. The present life

  594. is important

  595. to the Christian.

  596. The present life

  597. is important

  598. to the church.

  599. The present life

  600. is important

  601. in many respects.

  602. But what the devil

  603. wants you to look

  604. at is the present

  605. life exclusively

  606. and not actually

  607. take account

  608. of the importance

  609. and the enormity

  610. and the way

  611. in which eternity

  612. looms for the Christian

  613. as the crowning

  614. of their salvation.

  615. And in a sense,

  616. everything of this

  617. present life,

  618. however important

  619. it may be

  620. in its own right,

  621. but everything

  622. really moves forward

  623. towards that crowning

  624. moment of the coming

  625. of Christ.

  626. That's really what

  627. the helmet of salvation

  628. is about,

  629. the hope of salvation.

  630. Where the devil

  631. would encourage you,

  632. just focus on the present

  633. and where he would say,

  634. well, look at all

  635. the differences of opinion

  636. that are about the future,

  637. anyone about the coming

  638. of Christ.

  639. Not all Christians

  640. believe the same thing,

  641. so that's another way

  642. that he can get

  643. into your mind

  644. and say,

  645. you know,

  646. just don't be too serious

  647. about it.

  648. Be a Christian,

  649. certainly,

  650. just in a nominal sense,

  651. that'll do,

  652. that'll be enough.

  653. Well, this is the hope

  654. of salvation

  655. to counteract that.

  656. Where God

  657. started the work,

  658. as we saw in Philippians

  659. some time ago,

  660. just across the page

  661. in your Bible,

  662. I am sure of this,

  663. that he who began

  664. a good working,

  665. you will bring it

  666. to completion

  667. at the day

  668. of Jesus Christ.

  669. At the day

  670. of Jesus Christ.

  671. Take up

  672. the helmet

  673. of salvation.

  674. And just like you

  675. find with

  676. the sword

  677. of the spirit

  678. and with

  679. the shoes

  680. of the gospel

  681. and all the other

  682. parts of the armor,

  683. they are actually

  684. there ready to hand

  685. to be used

  686. on a daily basis.

  687. You need

  688. the helmet

  689. of salvation

  690. because your warfare

  691. is a daily warfare.

  692. You are facing

  693. this enemy

  694. every single

  695. day of your life.

  696. I know that

  697. I'm saying

  698. these things

  699. to people

  700. who already

  701. know that.

  702. But think of

  703. how often

  704. in the New Testament

  705. itself you find

  706. the likes of Peter

  707. and of Paul

  708. reminding Christians,

  709. reminding myself,

  710. reminding yourself.

  711. And reminding

  712. just means

  713. going back

  714. to the basic things,

  715. to the foundational

  716. things,

  717. to the building

  718. blocks of our

  719. redemption.

  720. Because the devil

  721. will, again,

  722. these powers

  723. of darkness,

  724. schemes,

  725. the wiles,

  726. the way

  727. in which

  728. temptation

  729. is shaped

  730. so as to

  731. draw you in

  732. and take

  733. your attention

  734. and suck you

  735. into its

  736. workings.

  737. It's there

  738. counteracted

  739. so often

  740. by the apostle

  741. by bringing

  742. before us

  743. the importance

  744. of eternity

  745. and bringing

  746. before us

  747. how God

  748. will not

  749. stop short

  750. of finishing

  751. the work

  752. that he has

  753. begun.

  754. When you go

  755. back to

  756. Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  757. chapter 8,

  758. that great

  759. chapter,

  760. we could have

  761. read that one

  762. tonight.

  763. It's very much

  764. in line with

  765. some of the

  766. thoughts in

  767. this chapter

  768. in Ephesians

  769. as well.

  770. But Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  771. chapter 8,

  772. and remember

  773. Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  774. is certainly

  775. a very strongly

  776. theological

  777. chapter.

  778. It's got some

  779. of the most

  780. wonderful

  781. theology,

  782. both of

  783. our foundational

  784. salvation in

  785. Christ and

  786. the work of

  787. the Spirit

  788. of God

  789. in us,

  790. but it's

  791. also got some

  792. of the most

  793. wonderful

  794. teaching on

  795. sanctification,

  796. on God

  797. actually working

  798. in his people,

  799. bringing them

  800. onwards towards

  801. the time when

  802. they will

  803. finally be like

  804. Jesus in the

  805. image of God's

  806. Son, what they

  807. are predestined

  808. to.

  809. So yes,

  810. there's all

  811. that wonderful

  812. theology in

  813. chapter 8 of

  814. Romans, but

  815. it's a chapter

  816. for encouragement.

  817. It's not there

  818. just to be

  819. studied by

  820. theologians.

  821. It's not just

  822. there for those

  823. who are skilled

  824. in following

  825. out theological

  826. arguments.

  827. It's there for

  828. you and it's

  829. there for me.

  830. It's there for

  831. every Christian

  832. because it's a

  833. chapter to do

  834. with Christian

  835. encouragement,

  836. which is why

  837. Paul winds up

  838. that chapter

  839. if you like.

  840. You can put it

  841. that way from

  842. verse 31,

  843. especially what

  844. then shall we

  845. say to these

  846. things?

  847. He's saying,

  848. here's the

  849. theology,

  850. here's the

  851. wonderful teaching,

  852. here's the

  853. doctrine,

  854. here are the

  855. things that are

  856. foundational to

  857. our belief,

  858. to our faith,

  859. to our salvation.

  860. So what's our

  861. reaction?

  862. What are we

  863. going to say?

  864. Why is that

  865. there for us?

  866. What are we to

  867. make of this?

  868. What shall we

  869. then say to

  870. these things?

  871. If God is for

  872. us, who can

  873. be against

  874. us?

  875. He who did

  876. not spare his

  877. own son but

  878. gave him up for

  879. us all, how

  880. will he not

  881. also with him

  882. graciously give

  883. us all things?

  884. You notice the

  885. with him is

  886. important.

  887. How will he

  888. not also with

  889. him, with the

  890. son, with

  891. Jesus, united

  892. to Christ, give

  893. us all things?

  894. And then he

  895. says, who

  896. shall lay any

  897. charge against

  898. God's elect?

  899. You see, that's

  900. the same context,

  901. the same atmosphere,

  902. if you like, as

  903. Ephesians 6, in

  904. the armor of

  905. God.

  906. Charge is brought

  907. against God's

  908. elect.

  909. That's the devil's

  910. business.

  911. That's his

  912. purpose.

  913. That's what he's

  914. busy at.

  915. That's what his

  916. scheming is about.

  917. Who shall lay

  918. any charge or

  919. bring any charge

  920. against God's

  921. elect?

  922. It is God who

  923. justifies.

  924. So who is to

  925. condemn?

  926. Where is there

  927. condemnation for

  928. these people who

  929. are in Christ

  930. Jesus?

  931. Paul is saying,

  932. there can't be.

  933. There's just no

  934. possibility.

  935. It's an impossibility

  936. that the devil is

  937. true about your

  938. condemnation when

  939. you're united to

  940. Christ.

  941. Because he says,

  942. Jesus Christ is the

  943. one who died, more

  944. than that, who was

  945. raised, who is at

  946. the right hand of

  947. God, who indeed is

  948. interceding for us.

  949. Who shall separate

  950. us from the love of

  951. Christ?

  952. Shall tribulation, or

  953. distress, or

  954. persecution, or

  955. famine, or

  956. nakedness, or

  957. danger, or

  958. sword, all of

  959. which are things

  960. that the devil has

  961. access to, to

  962. bring you to be

  963. discouraged, to

  964. bring you to take

  965. steps back?

  966. No, he says, in

  967. all these things, we

  968. are more than

  969. conquerors through

  970. him who loved us.

  971. For I am sure that

  972. neither death, nor

  973. life, nor angels,

  974. nor rulers, nor

  975. things present, nor

  976. things to come, nor

  977. powers, nor height,

  978. nor depth, nor

  979. anything else in all

  980. creation, will be

  981. able to separate

  982. us from the love

  983. of God in Christ

  984. Jesus, our Lord.

  985. You see how

  986. wonderfully

  987. practical Paul is

  988. in applying his

  989. theology.

  990. That's what is

  991. there for you and

  992. for me, too.

  993. And as you go to

  994. Ephesians 6, and

  995. go through these

  996. parts of the

  997. armor, and you

  998. come to what we're

  999. looking at tonight,

  1000. this helmet of

  1001. salvation, the hope

  1002. of salvation, it's

  1003. really saying to you,

  1004. think of your future.

  1005. Think of what's

  1006. already secure.

  1007. Think of what's

  1008. there waiting for

  1009. you to enjoy in

  1010. eternity.

  1011. Think of all that

  1012. for your present

  1013. life, so that you

  1014. be encouraged in

  1015. it, so that you

  1016. don't slacken, so

  1017. that you don't

  1018. give up, but

  1019. rather that you

  1020. persevere.

  1021. I mentioned

  1022. 2 Peter a few

  1023. moments ago, and

  1024. you'll find similar

  1025. emphasis there as he

  1026. deals with what was

  1027. in his own day,

  1028. some critical times

  1029. as well, and you

  1030. recall there in 2

    2 Peter 3 chapter mention

  1031. Peter chapter 3, how

  1032. he is facing the

  1033. idea that there

  1034. is actually just no

  1035. such thing as the

  1036. return of Christ,

  1037. where he's saying

  1038. in chapter 3 there,

  1039. he said, I'm

  1040. stirring up your

  1041. sincere mind by way

  1042. of reminder that

  1043. you should remember

  1044. the predictions of

  1045. the holy prophets

  1046. and the commandment

  1047. of the Lord, knowing

  1048. first of all that

  1049. scoffers will come in

  1050. the last days, and

  1051. the last days are

  1052. from the time that

  1053. Christ came and

  1054. went back to glory

  1055. until he returns,

  1056. these are the last

  1057. days.

  1058. And he's saying in

  1059. chapter 3 here of

  1060. 2 Peter, they will

  1061. say, following their

  1062. own sinful desires,

  1063. they will say, where

  1064. is the promise of

  1065. his coming?

  1066. For ever since the

  1067. fathers fell asleep,

  1068. all things continue

  1069. as they were from

  1070. the beginning of

  1071. creation.

  1072. And so all the

  1073. way through, he

  1074. then goes to deal

  1075. with the Lord, not

  1076. slack, concerning his

  1077. promises being

  1078. fulfilled, and how

  1079. he's patient towards

1080. us, and how one day

1081. with the Lord is like

  1082. a thousand years, a

  1083. thousand years like

  1084. one day.

  1085. Therefore he said,

  1086. beloved, since you are

  1087. waiting for these

  1088. things, be diligent to

  1089. be found by him

  1090. without spot or

  1091. blemish and at

  1092. peace, and count the

  1093. patience of our Lord

  1094. as salvation, just as

  1095. our beloved brother

  1096. Paul also wrote to

  1097. you, according to the

  1098. wisdom given to him.

  1099. Know you therefore,

  1100. know you therefore

  1101. beloved, in verse 17,

  1102. knowing this beforehand,

  1103. take care that you

  1104. are not carried

  1105. away with the

  1106. error of lawless

  1107. people and lose

  1108. your own

  1109. stability.

  1110. What is the

  1111. antidote to being

  1112. carried away and

  1113. losing your

  1114. stability?

  1115. What's the

  1116. antidote to

  1117. slackening off or

  1118. just giving up or

  1119. saying what's the

  1120. point?

  1121. It is this, but

  1122. grow in the grace

  1123. and knowledge of

  1124. our Lord and

  1125. Savior Jesus

  1126. Christ.

  1127. To him be glory

  1128. both now and to

  1129. the day of

  1130. eternity.

  1131. In other words,

  1132. you can say,

  1133. speaking into

  1134. Ephesians 6 as

  1135. well, that the

  1136. antidote to the

  1137. temptation to go

  1138. back or to give

  1139. up is to grow.

  1140. Spiritual growth

  1141. is the only

  1142. adequate response

  1143. or answer to the

  1144. temptation of the

  1145. devil to go up.

  1146. to give up.

  1147. And instead of

  1148. succumbing to

  1149. that temptation,

  1150. what we are

  1151. encouraged to do

  1152. by God himself

  1153. through his word

  1154. is to say in

  1155. return, not only

  1156. am I not going

  1157. to give up,

  1158. but I'm

  1159. determined to go

  1160. on growing in

  1161. my Christian life,

  1162. in my relationship

  1163. with the Lord,

  1164. in my relationship

  1165. with my fellow

  1166. Christians.

  1167. I'm determined

  1168. not to give up,

  1169. but instead to

  1170. actually take all

  1171. the encouragement

  1172. I can from

  1173. being with my

  1174. brothers and

  1175. sisters in

  1176. Christ, so that

  1177. together we will

  1178. grow in the

  1179. grace and in the

  1180. knowledge of our

  1181. Lord Jesus Christ.

  1182. May God bless

  1183. these thoughts on

  1184. his word to us.

  1185. now we're going to

  1186. conclude.

  1187. Thank you.

  1188. Thank you.

  1189. Thank you.

  1190. Thank you.

  1191. Thank you.

  1192. Thank you.

  1193. Thank you.
