  1. Well, let's begin our worship today. We're singing in Psalm 103, Psalm 103 in the Sing

  2. Psalms version, and that's on page 135. The tune is Herongate. We're singing verses 1

  3. to 11, one of the great Psalms of praise, where God is praised by the Psalmist as he

  4. actually looks into his own soul and calls upon his very inner being to praise the Lord.

  5. With all his heart. Praise God, my soul, with all my heart. Let me exalt his holy name.

  6. Forget not all his benefits. His praise, my soul, in song proclaim. Verses 1 to 11 to God's

  7. praise. And we'll stand. If you're able to stand, please stand to sing.

  8. Praise God, my soul, with all my heart.

  9. Let me exalt his holy name. Forget not all his benefits. His praise, my soul, in song proclaim.

  10. The Lord forgives you all your sins. And heals your sickness and distress. Your life he rescues

  11. from the grave. And crowns you in his tenderness. He satisfies your deep desires. From his

  12. name and grace, my soul, with all my heart. He satisfies your deep desires. He satisfies your

  13. heart. And he satisfies your deep desires. From his unending stores of good. So he

  14. He satisfies your deep desires

  15. From His unending stores of good

  16. So that just like the eagle's strength

  17. Your youthful vigor is renewed

  18. The Lord is known for righteous acts

  19. And justice too, downtrodden ones

  20. To Moses He made known His ways

  21. His mighty deeds to Israel's sons

  22. The Lord is merciful and kind

  23. To anger slow and full of grace

  24. He will not constantly reprove

  25. For in His anger hide His face

  26. He does not punish our misdeeds

  27. Or give our sins their just reward

  28. Our greatest love as I attend

  29. Towards all those who fear the Lord

  30. Let's now join together in prayer briefly

  31. O Lord, our God, as we give thanks once again

  32. Like the psalmist for all the good things

  33. That you give to us day by day

  34. We come before you now to worship you

  35. And we pray for your help as we do so

  36. That our hearts too may be stirred up

  37. Like David's was

  38. So that we may come to call upon the Lord

  39. In praise and thanksgiving

  40. We pray especially now for our children

  41. We thank you, Lord, for those who are here today

  42. For the creche, for the Sunday school, for tweenies

  43. We thank you for all the children who belong to us

  44. As a congregation

  45. And for the special place they have in our hearts

  46. We pray for them, O Lord, at this time

  47. And we pray for them

  48. That as they continue to grow up in years

  49. That they will grow in the knowledge of the Lord

  50. And we pray for them today, Lord

  51. As they receive teaching from your word

  52. That you would truly bless them

  53. And bless that to them

  54. We pray for your protective care of them

  55. In every way, morally and physically and spiritually

  56. We ask, Lord, that you would shield them about

  57. With your own power

  58. As they go from day to day in this world

  59. As they attend school

  60. As they come to other activities as well

  61. We pray for them

  62. As they do these things

  63. That they will know the blessing of the Lord

  64. Remember today also those who teach them

  65. Those in our Sunday school classes

  66. We thank you for them

  67. And for the Bible class too

  68. And we pray

  69. That in all of these areas, Lord

  70. That you would bless our young people

  71. And go before them

  72. And teach them your ways

  73. Hear us now, we pray

  74. And pardon our sin

  75. For Jesus' sake

  76. Amen

  77. Amen

  78. Okay, children

  79. It's good to see you all out today

  80. And I'm going to say something

  81. Is that at the end of the service?

  82. Buddy

  83. End of the service?

  84. Okay

  85. Okay

  86. Okay

  87. Minister always needs directions from church officers

  88. So

  89. I'm going to speak to you today

  90. A bit about Bluetooth

  91. Hands up

  92. Don't have to say anything

  93. But hands up

  94. Those who know what Bluetooth is

  95. Or where you'd find Bluetooth

  96. Some of the older ones probably know

  97. Maybe some of the younger ones as well

  98. Hands up those who know what Bluetooth is

  99. Hands up those of the adults

  100. Who know what Bluetooth is

  101. Okay

  102. There's quite a decent percentage of you

  103. Well Bluetooth

  104. Is a wireless system

  105. By which you can join together

  106. Mobile phones

  107. Or your mobile phone with a speaker

  108. Or your mobile phone with headphones

  109. So that you don't need wires

  110. It's very handy

  111. You just connect them together wirelessly

  112. And actually

  113. I just discovered

  114. Looking at this

  115. That it takes its name

  116. Bluetooth

  117. From a Danish king

  118. Way back in the 900s

  119. And he united

  120. Denmark together

  121. And he united

  122. Norway under his

  123. His rule as well

  124. And when the person who invented

  125. Bluetooth in the 1990s

  126. I think it was

  127. Was looking for a name

  128. For this wireless system

  129. He came across this name

  130. Harold Bluetooth

  131. The name of this king

  132. Who united these people

  133. Of

  134. Of

  135. Denmark

  136. And took Norway in as well

  137. And he said

  138. That would be a great name

  139. For my wireless system

  140. Because it unites

  141. Various

  142. Um

  143. Various phones

  144. Or other

  145. Other

  146. Electronic devices

  147. Together

  148. So what happens

  149. In Bluetooth

  150. You can actually set

  151. Your phone

  152. Let's just keep it to the phone

  153. For a moment

  154. You can set your phone

  155. With the Bluetooth

  156. On it

  157. Live

  158. You have to have

  159. The Bluetooth

  160. Active on it

  161. You can shut it off

  162. But if you want to

  163. Use it

  164. You need to put it on

  165. And the thing is

  166. If you want to

  167. Communicate

  168. Your phone

  169. With another phone

  170. Or with another device

  171. They also must have

  172. Their Bluetooth on

  173. Because that way

  174. They communicate

  175. To each other

  176. And

  177. Bluetooth

  178. As you need

  179. To have that on

  180. Makes your phone

  181. Discoverable

  182. Other phones

  183. That have Bluetooth

  184. Can then discover

  185. Your phone

  186. As long as it's

  187. No more than

  188. About 10 meters away

  189. It doesn't work

  190. Any further away

  191. Than that

  192. But through Bluetooth

  193. You can actually

  194. Then transfer

  195. Photos

  196. Music

  197. Files

  198. Whether they're

  199. Typed up files

  200. Or photos

  201. Whatever

  202. You can transfer

  203. That very quickly

  204. Through Bluetooth

  205. And it reminded me

  206. Of how God

  207. Has made himself

  208. Known to us

  209. In Jesus Christ

  210. That's how we come

  211. To know God

  212. And we wouldn't

  213. Be able to know God

  214. Unless God

  215. Had made himself

  216. Discoverable to us

  217. And just like

  218. Bluetooth on your phone

  219. The Bible is

  220. God's word

  221. Where he has

  222. Made himself

  223. Known to us

  224. Where we can

  225. Find out about him

  226. And more importantly

  227. Where we can

  228. Communicate with him

  229. Now just like

  230. If you're going to

  231. Use Bluetooth

  232. You must have it

  233. On on your phone

  234. So to communicate

  235. With God

  236. You must have

  237. Your mind

  238. And your soul

  239. Switched on

  240. I'm going to

  241. Speak in the

  242. Sermon today

  243. About people

  244. Who don't have

  245. That

  246. Who don't want

  247. God

  248. Who don't want

  249. To communicate

  250. With God

  251. But for all of us

  252. Here

  253. For all you

  254. Young folks as well

  255. I'm quite sure

  256. You want to

  257. Communicate with God

  258. You want to

  259. Speak to God

  260. You want to

  261. Hear God's voice

  262. Speaking to you

  263. And that's what

  264. You do

  265. When you come

  266. To pray to God

  267. You're communicating

  268. With God

  269. So it's important

  270. That our souls

  271. If you like

  272. Are switched on

  273. That we have

  274. The desire

  275. In our hearts

  276. To communicate

  277. With God

  278. To meet with God

  279. To get to know God

  280. To tell God

  281. About our concerns

  282. To ask him

  283. To forgive our sins

  284. To ask him

  285. To guide us

  286. Through the things

  287. Of life

  288. And in every other way

  289. In which we can

  290. Communicate with God

  291. We hear God's voices

  292. Also speaking to us

  293. Through his word

  294. So Bluetooth

  295. It's important

  296. You have it switched on

  297. And it's important

  298. Our souls

  299. Are switched on today

  300. Not just to young folks

  301. But ourselves

  302. As older ones too

  303. That we are switched on

  304. If you like

  305. To hear God's voice

  306. To be able

  307. To communicate with him

  308. And to hear him

  309. Communicating with us

  310. That's why

  311. Jesus came into the world

  312. So that we would come

  313. To know God

  314. Through him

  315. And in knowing God

  316. Through him

  317. Come to enjoy

  318. Eternal

  319. Life

  320. Well you can

  321. Google Bluetooth

  322. And you'll find out

  323. A lot more about it

  324. Than I've said today

  325. And it's very interesting

  326. Especially

  327. That it goes back

  328. To such a long time

  329. And we're back

  330. In the 900s

  331. Okay now

  332. We're going to say

  333. The Lord's Prayer together

  334. So let's just say

  335. The Lord's Prayer

  336. Our Father

  337. Our Father

  338. Which art in heaven

  339. Hallowed be thy name

  340. Thy kingdom come

  341. Thy will be done

  342. On earth

  343. As it is in heaven

  344. Give us this day

  345. Our daily bread

  346. And forgive us

  347. Our debts

  348. As we forgive

  349. Our debtors

  350. And lead us not

  351. Into temptation

  352. But deliver us

  353. From evil

  354. For thine is the kingdom

  355. The power

  356. And the glory

  357. Forever

  358. Amen

  359. Now the children

  360. Leave through

  361. The side door

  362. As well

  363. Please

  364. To go to your classes

  365. Today

  366. Because the front door

  367. Is very windy

  368. Or it's very windy

  369. At the front door

  370. I should say

  371. We're going to praise God

  372. Now from Psalm 31

  373. Psalm 31

  374. On page 243

  375. The tune is

  376. Spore

  377. And we're singing

  378. From verse

  379. 19 to 24

  380. How great's the goodness

  381. Thou for them

  382. That fear thee

  383. Keep'st in store

  384. And wrought's for them

  385. That trust in thee

  386. The sons of men before

  387. In secret of thy presence

  388. Thou shalt hide them

  389. From man's pride

  390. From strife of tongues

  391. Thou closely shalt

  392. As in a tent

  393. Them hide

  394. Verses 19

  395. To 24

  396. To God's praise

  397. Amen

  398. There's the goodness

  399. Thou for them

  400. That fear thee

  401. Keep'st in store

  402. And rose for them

  403. That trust in thee

  404. The sons of men before

  405. In secret of thy presence

  406. Thou shalt hide

  407. Shall hide them

  408. From man's pride

  409. From strife of tongues

  410. Thou closely shalt

  411. As in a tent

  412. Them hide

  413. All praise and thanks

  414. Be to the Lord

  415. For he hath magnified

  416. His wondrous love

  417. His wondrous love

  418. To be within

  419. A city fortified

  420. For from thy night

  421. For from thy night

  422. God of I am

  423. I hear in my ears

  424. Christ has said

  425. My voice

  426. It hurts

  427. The wind

  428. To thee

  429. With Christ

  430. My moon

  431. My moon

  432. My way

  433. My way

  434. O love

  435. The Lord

  436. All ye

  437. His names

  438. Because the Lord

  439. God

  440. God

  441. The faithful

  442. Lamb

  443. He blen

  444. Justly

  445. Thou

  446. Ears

  447. Thou

  448. Reward

  449. Lord

  450. 그래

  451. doth on the Lord depend.

  452. Let's turn to read God's word now as we find that in John's gospel,

  453. gospel of John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  454. We're reading from the beginning, down as far as verse 21.

  455. John 3, from the beginning of the chapter.

  456. There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

  457. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him,

  458. Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God,

  459. for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.

  460. Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you,

  461. unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

  462. Nicodemus said to him, How can a man be born when he is old?

  463. Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?

  464. Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you,

  465. unless one is born of water and the Spirit,

  466. he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

  467. That which is born of the flesh is flesh,

  468. and that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit.

  469. Do not marvel that I said to you,

  470. You must be born again.

  471. The wind blows where it wishes,

  472. and you hear its sound,

  473. but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes.

  474. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.

  475. Nicodemus said to him, How can these things be?

  476. Jesus answered him, Are you the teacher of Israel,

  477. and yet you do not understand these things?

  478. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  479. we speak of what we know and bear witness to what we have seen,

  480. but you do not receive our testimony.

  481. If I have told you earthly things,

  482. and you do not believe,

  483. how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

  484. No one has ascended into heaven

  485. except he who descended from heaven,

  486. the Son of Man.

  487. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness,

  488. so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

  489. that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

  490. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,

  491. that whoever believes in him should not perish,

  492. but have eternal life.

  493. For God did not send his Son into the world

  494. to condemn the world,

  495. but in order that the world might be saved through him.

  496. Whoever believes in him is not condemned,

  497. but whoever does not believe is condemned already,

  498. because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

  499. And this is the judgment.

  500. The light has come into the world,

  501. and people loved the darkness rather than the light,

  502. because their deeds were evil.

  503. But everyone who does wicked things hates the light,

  504. and does not come to the light,

  505. lest his deeds should be exposed.

  506. But whoever does what is true comes to the light,

  507. so that it may be clearly seen

  508. that his deeds have been carried out in God.

  509. Amen.

  510. May God follow with his blessing our reading of his word today.

  511. Let's again call upon him in prayer.

  512. Our gracious God and our Father in heaven,

  513. we thank you for the light that your word brings to us,

  514. for the way that you, yourself in it,

  515. are the light of the world.

  516. We thank you today, O Lord,

  517. as we give thanks for the privilege of being here to worship you.

  518. We thank you for the way in which your word of truth guides our thoughts.

  519. We pray today, Lord, for a receptive heart.

  520. We pray that you would give to us by your Holy Spirit

  521. the ability that is not of ourselves

  522. to receive the things of God gladly,

  523. to hide them in our hearts so that we might live by them,

  524. that they may be shown forth in the life we live.

  525. Lord, we thank you today for the many privileges

  526. that are ours in your providence.

  527. We know that there are so many things that disturb us

  528. and cause us disquiet in the world

  529. and in the generation that we live in.

  530. And yet we know that we have so many benefits,

  531. so many advantages as your people,

  532. as your church in the world,

  533. so much freedom to enjoy,

  534. so much, Lord, of a knowledge of your own truth

  535. in the midst of the darkness that surrounds us so much.

  536. Lord, help us, we pray today,

  537. to be honest with you,

  538. to be honest with ourselves.

  539. Help us to be honest with your written word.

  540. Help us to handle it aright in speaking and in hearing.

  541. And give us, we pray,

  542. to have our minds shaped by it as the truth of God.

  543. We ask today that your blessing will be here with us as a people.

  544. We give thanks, O Lord,

  545. for all who come to worship you here week by week,

  546. for all who join us online,

  547. especially those, Lord,

  548. who are unable themselves physically to be here.

  549. We give thanks that they are able to participate

  550. in the worship services

  551. through the live stream

  552. that we are privileged to have.

  553. We pray today for each and every family,

  554. each and every home

  555. belonging to us as a congregation.

  556. We thank you again for our children and young people.

  557. Lord, we give thanks for the number of them

  558. that we've seen going through to Bible class

  559. and to the tweenies

  560. and to Sunday school today.

  561. We pray, gracious one, for them once again

  562. and ask that you would bless them

  563. as they develop in their years.

  564. We pray, too,

  565. that you'd grant your blessing

  566. to all our activities as a congregation,

  567. in addition to our services of worship, O Lord.

  568. Remember all that we anticipate

  569. in this week ahead, God willing.

  570. And we pray that you would bless every venture

  571. that seeks to make you known

  572. and make the gospel known

  573. amongst ourselves and in our community.

  574. And we ask today, O Lord,

  575. that your blessing will accompany

  576. all of these efforts,

  577. that they may be used to further your kingdom,

  578. to advance your glory in the world.

  579. And we pray, O Lord,

  580. that we may take such an interest in that

  581. as we ourselves, if we don't attend yet.

  582. O Lord, we pray that you would bless

  583. each and all of these activities.

  584. And we pray for the Hope Explored sessions

  585. that are about to start.

  586. We pray for them and for those who lead.

  587. We pray that many will come, Lord,

  588. to hear of the death and the resurrection,

  589. the exaltation of our Lord.

  590. Lord, we ask, Lord,

  591. that you would give us especially

  592. to have an interest in that above all else,

  593. for this is how you have come

  594. to provide salvation for us.

  595. We pray, Lord, today that you would bless

  596. all in the congregation

  597. and of our friends and neighbors

  598. who are unwell at this time.

  599. We pray that you bless those

  600. who are recovering from illness,

  601. those recovering from treatment,

  602. those anticipating treatment or surgery

  603. in days to come.

  604. We pray your blessing for them.

  605. We pray for all, O Lord,

  606. who have other trials in life

  607. to contend with,

  608. those especially, Lord,

  609. who have difficulties in their families

  610. and tensions.

  611. We pray for those who have

  612. various aspects of addiction

  613. to contend with.

  614. We ask that you would bless those

  615. who seek to help them from week to week.

  616. We pray for Road to Recovery.

  617. We pray for our street pastors.

  618. We pray that you'd bless them

  619. as they interact with people

  620. from week to week.

  621. Lord, bless them, we pray,

  622. and protect themselves

  623. as they go about their work.

  624. We pray for all in our health service,

  625. hospital, care homes, Bethesda.

  626. We ask, Lord,

  627. that you would continue to bless us

  628. through these means.

  629. Grant to us, O Lord,

  630. we pray that as we give thanks

  631. for these facilities

  632. so that you would bless them

  633. with further resources

  634. and enable them to use their resources

  635. well and wisely

  636. in the benefit of others.

  637. We pray that your blessing

  638. will be with all our medical practices

  639. and doctors and practitioners.

  640. We pray your blessing for them,

  641. for all who attend to care

  642. in our hospital as nurses, consultants.

  643. We pray for them, Lord, as well.

  644. We pray that you will bless those

  645. who are in charge over us

  646. in government.

  647. And Lord, while we do lament

  648. the failures in many ways

  649. of those who lead us

  650. and different ways

  651. in which that failure

  652. is shown to us

  653. in their lives

  654. and in their day-to-day

  655. carrying out of their duties

  656. and their confessions,

  657. we lament especially, Lord,

  658. the fact that so few of them

  659. seem to look to your ways

  660. and so many of them

  661. seem to have rejected

  662. the light of your truth.

  663. Lord, we pray that you would

  664. turn us into your ways.

  665. We pray that you would forgive

  666. our many sins as a people.

  667. We pray that throughout our land,

  668. throughout our communities,

  669. the light of the gospel

  670. may powerfully shine.

  671. We ask, Lord, for ourselves

  672. that we may give more place

  673. to prayer and to supplication

  674. for your blessing to come,

  675. for your power to be shown

  676. turning people to yourself

  677. and empowering us as your people

  678. to be living witnesses

  679. for you in the world.

  680. We ask now that you would

  681. continue, Lord, to bless us here

  682. as we turn to your word.

  683. We pray that you would help us

  684. in our understanding

  685. and application of it

  686. and all with the forgiveness

  687. of our sin.

  688. For Jesus' sake.

  689. Amen.

  690. Well, before we turn

  691. to that passage in God's word,

  692. let's sing once again.

  693. We're going to sing in Psalm 26.

  694. Psalm 26, page 30.

  695. We'll sing verses 1 to 6,

  696. not verses 1 to 9.

  697. We'll just sing the four stanzas,

  698. verses 1 to 6.

  699. The tune is Balerma.

  700. Declare me innocent, O Lord,

  701. I've walked in blameless ways,

  702. and I have trusted in the Lord,

  703. not wavering all my days.

  704. Test me, O Lord,

  705. and try my heart.

  706. My inmost thoughts survey.

  707. Your love surrounds me.

  708. From your truth my feet

  709. will never stray.

  710. Verses 1 to 6 of Psalm 26.

  711. Declare me innocent, O Lord,

  712. I've walked in blameless ways,

  713. and I have trusted in the Lord,

  714. not wavering all my days.

  715. Test me, O Lord,

  716. and try my heart.

  717. My inmost thoughts survey.

  718. Your love surrounds me from your truth.

  719. My feet will never stray.

  720. I do not sit with worthless woe.

  721. I shun the hypocrite.

  722. I hate the wind.

  723. His gatherings.

  724. With them I will not sit.

  725. I wash my hands.

  726. I wash my hands.

  727. In illicit.

  728. And when blessed is my heart,

  729. I go apart.

  730. Your altar, Lord,

  731. the place you set upon.

  732. Let's turn now to John chapter 3

    John 3 chapter mention

  733. and reading at verse 19.

  734. And this is the judgment.

  735. The light has come into the world,

  736. and people love the darkness

  737. rather than the light

  738. because their deeds were evil.

  739. For everyone who does wicked things

  740. hates the light

  741. and does not come to the light,

  742. lest his deeds should be exposed.

  743. But whoever does what is true

  744. comes to the light

  745. so that it may be clearly seen

  746. that his deeds have been carried out

  747. in God.

  748. When I was in secondary school,

  749. there was a time when activities

  750. were available

  751. for the last two sessions

  752. on a Friday each week.

  753. Various kinds of activities,

  754. sporting activities,

  755. other kinds of craft activities.

  756. At one time,

  757. I and a few friends

  758. decided to take up oil painting

  759. for these activities.

  760. And I remember the first time

  761. we went into the class

  762. with the art teacher.

  763. He handed out these large books

  764. with oil paintings in them.

  765. They were actually paintings

  766. mostly of Impressionist paintings,

  767. by Impressionist painters.

  768. So they weren't the kind of thing

  769. that we were expecting.

  770. We were expecting nice landscapes

  771. or something like that.

  772. And one of my pals,

  773. not knowing the teacher

  774. was standing behind him,

  775. behind him said,

  776. this is just rubbish.

  777. And the teacher stood and said,

  778. that's not rubbish, boys.

  779. These are masterpieces.

  780. And of course,

  781. what the boy was showing

  782. was his own ignorance.

  783. He was really bringing judgment

  784. upon himself for his ignorance

  785. because he just didn't know

  786. anything much about these paintings.

  787. But he decided nevertheless

  788. to give his opinion.

  789. And his opinion, of course,

  790. was not right.

  791. Well, in a spiritual sense,

  792. that's something of what you find here

  793. in verse 19 onwards.

  794. This is the judgment.

  795. The light has come into the world

  796. and people love the darkness

  797. rather than the light

  798. because their deeds were evil.

  799. The light has come into the world.

  800. God has revealed himself to us.

  801. That's what we're trying to say

  802. to the children

  803. through the illustration of Bluetooth.

  804. Light has come into the world,

  805. but that doesn't mean

  806. the light was accepted

  807. or even welcomed

  808. because people turned from the light

  809. and still turn from the light

  810. and they're really bringing judgment

  811. upon themselves.

  812. They're evaluating the light

  813. and then they dismiss the light

  814. and reject the light.

  815. And what they're doing

  816. is really saying,

  817. that's not according to

  818. my better understanding

  819. of what human life should be.

  820. And of course,

  821. that's just bringing judgment

  822. upon themselves

  823. because speaking out of

  824. our own natural ignorance

  825. as sinners.

  826. And it's rejecting God's masterpiece

  827. of salvation that this is about.

  828. Light has come into the world.

  829. We'll see that that's especially so

  830. in the person of Jesus

  831. and in the work that Jesus has done

  832. and accomplished

  833. through his life,

  834. through his death,

  835. through his resurrection.

  836. Light has come into the world,

  837. but people loved darkness

  838. rather than light

  839. because their deeds were evil.

  840. God is saying,

  841. here is my masterpiece.

  842. Here is what nobody else

  843. could have provided

  844. but myself.

  845. And yet people say,

  846. no, I don't want that.

  847. I don't think that's attractive at all.

  848. It doesn't fit with my expectations.

  849. I can do better than that myself.

  850. And you can see,

  851. first of all,

  852. in verse 19,

  853. that John speaks about

  854. the condemnation.

  855. This is the condemnation.

  856. That's really judgment

  857. that's used here in the translation,

  858. but it's more than just judgment.

  859. The word used

  860. actually means judgment

  861. after examination of something.

  862. It means condemnation

  863. as a result of rejection.

  864. This is the condemnation.

  865. The light has come into the world.

  866. People love the darkness

  867. rather than the light.

  868. So there's the condemnation

  869. spoken of in verse 19.

  870. And then verses 20 to 21

  871. speaks of two contrasts

  872. or a contrast between

  873. two types of people.

  874. Those who hate the light

  875. and those who hate the light,

  876. it says there,

  877. are those who do wicked things.

  878. They don't come to the light

  879. and they do not come to the light

  880. in case their deeds should be

  881. or so that their deeds

  882. would not be exposed.

  883. But the contrast with that

  884. is those who do the truth

  885. or what is true.

  886. They come to the light

  887. so that their deeds

  888. may be clearly seen

  889. that they've been carried out

  890. in God

  891. or in relation to God

  892. or to the honor of God.

  893. That's basically the outline

  894. of our study today.

  895. And I want to do that

  896. in relation to the kind of situation

  897. we face in our society.

  898. I mean, I need not tell you,

  899. you can see it very clearly yourselves,

  900. that our society

  901. is steadily breaking up.

  902. There are so many things

  903. about our society

  904. that really makes us say that.

  905. When you consider, for example,

  906. all the attacks

  907. and the disintegration

  908. that has happened

  909. even in such things,

  910. I'm just going to mention

  911. a few examples.

  912. You'll know about them yourselves.

  913. Marriage,

  914. gender confusion,

  915. gender transition,

  916. the life of the unborn,

  917. family values,

  918. what family should be about,

  919. sex education materials,

  920. violence in schools,

  921. various addictions,

  922. health service concerns,

  923. and that's not saying anything

  924. about the disintegration

  925. of the Lord's Day itself.

  926. You can see from that

  927. and you could add to that list

  928. many ways in which

  929. our society

  930. is breaking up around us.

  931. And I want to try and

  932. get from this,

  933. see from this passage today,

  934. how this rejection of the light,

  935. how this hatred of the light

  936. really stands as a basic factor

  937. in that breakup.

  938. There are many other factors, yes,

  939. but this is one of the most basic factors

  940. as to why this is happening

  941. in our society,

  942. amongst us as a people.

  943. Why is all this taking place?

  944. What's the underlying reason?

  945. Well, here is a prominent

  946. underlying reason

  947. that light has come into the world

  948. and people love the darkness

  949. rather than the light.

  950. See, the Bible

  951. is always straight talking.

  952. And we don't like straight talking

  953. when it's the truth

  954. that's been spoken of.

  955. But God does the straight talking

  956. and we really should be listening.

  957. We are listening.

  958. I know in terms of our own

  959. situation here,

  960. but so many people in the world

  961. don't want to receive

  962. or to listen to that.

  963. So what is this saying to us?

  964. Well, first of all,

  965. the condemnation.

  966. The light has come into the world.

  967. And you notice the definite article there.

  968. It's the light.

  969. This is the judgment.

  970. This is the condemnation.

  971. The light has come into the world.

  972. And in the Gospel of John,

  973. that is pretty obviously referring

  974. to the light that has come

  975. from God in Christ.

  976. Jesus spoke himself.

  977. And for example,

  978. in chapter 8,

  979. one of the I am's of John's Gospel

  980. in chapter 8, verse 12,

  981. where Jesus there spoke of himself.

  982. Jesus spoke to them saying,

  983. I am the light of the world.

  984. Whoever follows me

  985. will not walk in darkness,

  986. but will have the light of life.

  987. And then you flick forward

  988. to chapter 12 as well.

  989. You find verse 46 there

  990. near the end of the chapter

  991. where you find Jesus again saying,

  992. I have come into the world.

  993. Very similar to the words

  994. in chapter 3.

  995. I have come into the world

  996. as light,

  997. so that whoever believes in me

  998. may not remain in darkness.

  999. If anyone hears my words,

  1000. does not keep them,

  1001. and so on.

  1002. It's all tied together,

  1003. isn't it,

1004. with the light that has appeared

  1005. in Jesus.

  1006. God revealed himself

  1007. and is revealing himself

  1008. through the Gospel,

  1009. through Jesus Christ,

1010. in the person of Christ.

  1011. That's the light

1012. that has come into the world.

1013. God has made himself known

1014. as more than just being discoverable.

  1015. He's actually saying,

1016. this is who I am.

1017. This is what I am like.

1018. And yet people loved the darkness

  1019. rather than the light.

  1020. And notice,

  1021. there's a definite article

1022. with the darkness as well,

  1023. because it's telling us

1024. that this is the polar opposite

  1025. of the light

1026. that has come into the world.

1027. The darkness that people love

  1028. is the exact opposite.

1029. It is all that's opposite

  1030. to the light

  1031. that has come

1032. in the person of Christ,

  1033. especially into the world.

  1034. And that means that

1035. what is opposite to the light,

  1036. all the activity

  1037. of sinful behavior,

  1038. all the activity

1039. of what he says here

1040. are those who do wicked things

  1041. or evil things.

1042. Those who do these things,

  1043. they're not living

1044. in a kind of spiritual neutrality.

  1045. The darkness is not

  1046. a spiritual neutrality.

1047. It's not as if it's just neutral

1048. compared to the positive elements

  1049. of the light.

1050. The darkness has its own

  1051. positive attributes.

  1052. And the positive attributes

  1053. in John's gospel,

1054. when you read through John's gospel

  1055. and what he says

  1056. about the light

  1057. and about its opposite

  1058. in the darkness,

  1059. it's the positive activity

1060. of sin and of evil.

  1061. And it's especially

  1062. in John's teaching,

  1063. the darkness

  1064. that is antagonistic

  1065. to God.

  1066. It's the darkness

  1067. of the world

  1068. and its sinfulness,

  1069. the world

  1070. and its lostness.

1071. You see what he's saying here.

  1072. Light has come

  1073. into the world

  1074. and yet people

  1075. love the darkness

  1076. rather than the light

  1077. because their deeds

  1078. were evil.

  1079. People loved

  1080. the darkness

  1081. rather than the light.

1082. Now what's that saying to us?

1083. It's saying that this is

  1084. something that is done

  1085. knowingly.

  1086. Something that is done

  1087. deliberately.

  1088. Something that is done

  1089. using the process

  1090. of reason and thought.

  1091. You don't actually

  1092. love something

  1093. without thinking about it.

  1094. Without considering it.

1095. And here he is saying

  1096. people loved

  1097. the darkness

  1098. rather than the light.

  1099. it's not something

  1100. they actually slipped

  1101. into accidentally.

  1102. When people reject

  1103. the gospel

  1104. in the world

  1105. in which we live.

  1106. When you see

  1107. the elements of darkness,

  1108. the activities of darkness,

1109. the darkness of our age,

  1110. it's not something

  1111. that's just done

  1112. as it were.

  1113. it's not...

  1114. Okay, I'm not sure

  1115. what's going on there

  1116. but it's obviously

  1117. to do with

  1118. the electronics.

  1119. The darkness

  1120. of our world

  1121. is a deliberate darkness.

  1122. People

  1123. love the darkness.

  1124. It's not something

  1125. that they just

  1126. do

  1127. without thinking about it.

  1128. It's a deliberate

  1129. knowing choice.

  1130. Why is that?

  1131. Because their deeds

  1132. are evil.

  1133. Well, John

  1134. is a wonderful gospel.

  1135. John has so

  1136. many wonderful

  1137. images

  1138. to present to us.

  1139. Many of them

  1140. are comforting

  1141. but this one

  1142. is very uncomfortable.

  1143. What he's saying

  1144. to us is that

  1145. people

  1146. reject the light.

  1147. People hate

  1148. the light.

  1149. People don't want

  1150. the light.

  1151. Why?

  1152. Because their deeds

  1153. are evil.

  1154. Their workings

  1155. are evil.

  1156. It's very similar

  1157. in many ways

  1158. to the teaching

  1159. of Romans 1

    Romans 1:18–32

  1160. verses 18

  1161. to 32

  1162. where to reject

  1163. that

  1164. people actually

  1165. choose to

  1166. live an alternate

  1167. lifestyle

  1168. to the one

  1169. that God

  1170. himself

  1171. actually says

  1172. is pleasing

  1173. to him

  1174. and that's not

  1175. something they do

  1176. unknowingly.

  1177. Paul is saying

  1178. just like John here

  1179. it's a deliberate

  1180. choice.

  1181. it's a deliberate

  1182. rejection of the

  1183. light.

  1184. Now and again

  1185. it's not something

  1186. that happens

  1187. sporadically

  1188. or just once

  1189. in a while.

  1190. It's something

  1191. that characterizes

  1192. the life of

  1193. these people

  1194. constantly

  1195. in an ongoing

  1196. way.

  1197. It's a constant

  1198. with them.

  1199. Everyone who

  1200. does wicked

  1201. things.

  1202. But then you see

  1203. the question is

  1204. well what are

  1205. wicked things?

  1206. How do we know

  1207. what wicked

  1208. things are?

  1209. How do you

  1210. distinguish wicked

  1211. things from

  1212. good things?

  1213. People have

  1214. different opinions

  1215. about what is

  1216. wicked and what

  1217. is not.

  1218. And we've chosen

  1219. largely to

  1220. confine the

  1221. definition of

  1222. wicked to

  1223. gross crimes

  1224. or sins.

  1225. Things that are

  1226. really very

  1227. much to do

  1228. with open

  1229. corruption or

  1230. whatever.

  1231. But wickedness

  1232. in the Bible

  1233. takes in much

  1234. much more than

  1235. that.

  1236. In fact it's a

  1237. word that really

  1238. describes what

  1239. we are

  1240. without Christ.

  1241. What we are

  1242. without salvation.

  1243. We may not

  1244. see ourselves

  1245. as wicked.

  1246. People out

  1247. there today

  1248. would not

  1249. say that

  1250. they are

  1251. wicked.

  1252. But this is

  1253. God's definition

  1254. of how do

  1255. we know what

  1256. wicked things

  1257. are?

  1258. God has

  1259. defined them

  1260. for us in

  1261. the Bible.

  1262. God tells us

  1263. what is and

  1264. isn't acceptable

  1265. to him.

  1266. What is and

  1267. isn't wrong

  1268. with ourselves.

  1269. And that's

  1270. where he

  1271. describes for

  1272. us what

  1273. wicked things

  1274. are.

  1275. That's why

  1276. there is

  1277. such a

  1278. constant

  1279. attempt to

  1280. take the

  1281. Bible out

  1282. of human

  1283. life.

  1284. Because those

  1285. who love

  1286. the darkness,

  1287. those who

  1288. want to

  1289. promote the

  1290. darkness,

  1291. those who

  1292. think that

  1293. the darkness

  1294. is really

  1295. the light

  1296. that people

  1297. need,

  1298. whether it's

  1299. in the

  1300. teaching of

  1301. our children,

  1302. in medical

  1303. ethics,

  1304. wherever you

  1305. find it,

  1306. this is what

  1307. is really

  1308. of concern

  1309. to them,

  1310. that the

  1311. Bible really

  1312. shows up

  1313. that sort

  1314. of behavior

  1315. as wrong,

  1316. and the

  1317. word wrong

  1318. really is

  1319. not acceptable.

  1320. People who

  1321. actually love

  1322. the darkness

  1323. rather than

  1324. the light

  1325. because their

  1326. deeds are

  1327. evil,

  1328. they hate

  1329. the light

  1330. and they

  1331. don't come

  1332. to the

  1333. light.

  1334. It's a

  1335. constant

  1336. dismissal

  1337. of the

  1338. authority,

  1339. of the

  1340. teaching,

  1341. of the

  1342. words of

  1343. the

  1344. Bible.

  1345. You

  1346. think of

  1347. every

  1348. attempt

  1349. in your

  1350. own

  1351. lifetime

  1352. of having

  1353. this

  1354. Bible

  1355. removed

  1356. and

  1357. its

  1358. teaching

  1359. removed

  1360. from

  1361. various

  1362. areas

  1363. of our

  1364. society,

  1365. our

  1366. schools,

  1367. wherever

  1368. else you

  1369. think about

  1370. it,

  1371. universities,

  1372. schools,

  1373. places of

  1374. teaching,

  1375. places of

  1376. care,

  1377. where else

  1378. do you

  1379. find it?

  1380. I remember

  1381. quite a number

  1382. of years

  1383. back when

  1384. I was

  1385. part of

  1386. the

  1387. committee

  1388. of

  1389. Bethesda

  1390. hospice,

  1391. that a

  1392. certain

  1393. inspection

  1394. had come

  1395. up with

  1396. recommendations

  1397. and one

  1398. of the

  1399. recommendations

  1400. was that

  1401. the plaques

  1402. that had

  1403. been donated

  1404. to Bethesda

  1405. and were

  1406. actually shown

  1407. on the

  1408. walls

  1409. throughout

  1410. the building

  1411. that had

  1412. texts on

  1413. them should

  1414. actually be

  1415. removed

  1416. because these

  1417. texts would

  1418. be offensive

  1419. to certain

  1420. people and

  1421. Bethesda's

  1422. practice is that

  1423. there's no

  1424. prejudice,

  1425. there's no

  1426. discrimination as

  1427. to who can

  1428. get care

  1429. there,

  1430. whether they're

  1431. Christians or

  1432. not,

  1433. whether they're

  1434. believers or

  1435. not,

  1436. the hospice is

  1437. there for

  1438. them,

  1439. the facilities

  1440. are there

  1441. for them,

  1442. but this

  1443. inspection said

  1444. no you can't

  1445. have that

  1446. because that's

  1447. going to offend

  1448. people and

  1449. that's something

  1450. that people will

  1451. not agree with.

  1452. Well there you

  1453. see it's a

  1454. very small

  1455. example of

  1456. where you

  1457. find people

  1458. wanting to

  1459. remove the

  1460. influence of

  1461. the light,

  1462. the references

  1463. to the light

  1464. from human

  1465. life.

  1466. And you

  1467. see what it's

  1468. saying here?

  1469. Those who

  1470. hate the

  1471. light,

  1472. those who

  1473. do wicked

  1474. things as

  1475. God defines

  1476. them,

  1477. they hate

  1478. the light.

  1479. And you

  1480. couldn't put it

  1481. any stronger

  1482. than that because

  1483. that's really as

  1484. strong as John

  1485. could have put it.

  1486. Everyone who

  1487. does wicked

  1488. things hates

  1489. the light.

  1490. It's not a

  1491. matter of them

  1492. being unconcerned

  1493. about this thing

  1494. one way or

  1495. another.

  1496. It's not that

  1497. they couldn't

  1498. care less about

  1499. it.

  1500. It's that there's

  1501. a positive

  1502. hatred of it.

  1503. All you've

  1504. got to do

  1505. is really

  1506. stick your

  1507. head above

  1508. the parapet

  1509. on social

  1510. media today,

  1511. come out

  1512. with a

  1513. Christian

  1514. opinion

  1515. against

  1516. something

  1517. that you

  1518. know is

  1519. wickedness,

  1520. and you'll

  1521. soon find

  1522. the reaction

  1523. to that

  1524. is hatred.

  1525. They hate

  1526. the light.

  1527. They don't

  1528. want to see

  1529. the light.

  1530. They don't

  1531. want the

  1532. light to

  1533. shine upon

  1534. them at

  1535. all.

  1536. And that's

  1537. a characteristic

  1538. of our

  1539. society.

  1540. It's not

  1541. just confined

  1542. to Twitter.

  1543. This is

  1544. emblematic of

  1545. people's

  1546. thinking,

  1547. people's

  1548. reaction,

  1549. people's

  1550. insistence on

  1551. living their

  1552. way,

  1553. whatever else

  1554. people will

  1555. say,

  1556. whatever the

  1557. church says,

  1558. and especially

  1559. what the

  1560. church says.

  1561. And that's

  1562. really,

  1563. friends,

  1564. the main

  1565. factor behind

  1566. our society

  1567. falling apart.

  1568. The issues I've

  1569. mentioned already,

  1570. you can add to

  1571. them yourself,

  1572. as I've said.

  1573. But the reason

  1574. for that,

  1575. the underlying

  1576. reason,

  1577. one of the

  1578. main reasons,

  1579. if not the

  1580. main reason,

  1581. is because as

  1582. a people,

  1583. we've largely

  1584. turned away

  1585. from God,

  1586. turned away

  1587. from God's

  1588. way,

  1589. turned away

  1590. from the

  1591. things that

  1592. God says

  1593. is best for

  1594. us as a

  1595. people,

  1596. turned away

  1597. from the

  1598. light,

  1599. and instead

  1600. we've come

  1601. to love

  1602. the darkness.

  1603. Love the

  1604. darkness.

  1605. Not look at

  1606. it in a sort

  1607. of neutral

  1608. way or a

  1609. casual way.

  1610. We have come

  1611. as a people

  1612. to love it,

  1613. to love its

  1614. ways,

  1615. to love its

  1616. characteristics.

  1617. Of course

  1618. there are

  1619. exceptions.

  1620. You're

  1621. exceptions

  1622. yourselves.

  1623. There are

  1624. many exceptions

  1625. thankfully,

  1626. but by and

  1627. large what

  1628. you see

  1629. going on

  1630. in our

  1631. society

  1632. throughout

  1633. all the

  1634. levels of

  1635. our society

  1636. is hatred

  1637. of the

  1638. light and

  1639. a love

  1640. of darkness.

  1641. At the

  1642. end of our

  1643. study I'll

  1644. come to

  1645. apply this

  1646. to ourselves

  1647. and how we

  1648. should react

  1649. to that.

  1650. But you

  1651. see then

  1652. it says

  1653. those who

  1654. hate the

  1655. light,

  1656. they do

  1657. not come

  1658. to the

  1659. light.

  1660. They don't

  1661. want to

  1662. come near

  1663. the light.

  1664. That's why

  1665. the Bible

  1666. is so

  1667. distasteful

  1668. to them.

  1669. Why the

  1670. idea of

  1671. the gospel

  1672. and hearing

  1673. about sin

  1674. and the

  1675. salvation

  1676. from sin

  1677. is so

  1678. distasteful

  1679. because they

  1680. shun the

  1681. light.

  1682. They don't

  1683. like the

  1684. light.

  1685. They hate

  1686. the light.

  1687. They will

  1688. not come

  1689. to the

  1690. light.

  1691. It stands

  1692. to reason.

  1693. Nobody is

  1694. drawn to

  1695. what they

  1696. hate.

  1697. And if

  1698. you hate

  1699. the light

  1700. you're not

  1701. going to be

  1702. drawn to

  1703. the light

  1704. until God

  1705. changes your

  1706. heart.

  1707. There's an

  1708. aversion to

  1709. the light.

  1710. And I

  1711. want you

  1712. to see

  1713. how this

  1714. has been

  1715. a characteristic

  1716. of human

  1717. behavior and

  1718. human response

  1719. to God

  1720. ever since

  1721. man fell

  1722. as recorded

  1723. in Genesis

  1724. 3.

  1725. And from

  1726. verse 3

  1727. to verse 10

  1728. of Genesis

  1729. 3,

  1730. these are

  1731. important verses

  1732. in regard to

  1733. what we're

  1734. looking at

  1735. today as

  1736. well for

  1737. other reasons

  1738. too.

  1739. but you'll

  1740. find here

  1741. from verse

  1742. 8 especially

  1743. where you

  1744. find they

  1745. heard,

  1746. that's Adam

  1747. and Eve,

  1748. they heard

  1749. the sound

  1750. of the

  1751. Lord God

  1752. walking in

  1753. the garden

  1754. in the

  1755. cool of

  1756. the day.

  1757. And the

  1758. man and

  1759. his wife

  1760. hid

  1761. themselves

  1762. from the

  1763. presence

  1764. of the

  1765. Lord God

  1766. among the

  1767. trees of

  1768. the garden.

  1769. What's

  1770. happening

  1771. there?

  1772. The light

  1773. has come.

  1774. God

  1775. has come

  1776. into the

  1777. garden.

  1778. Man has

  1779. now fallen.

  1780. Man has

  1781. become a

  1782. sinner.

  1783. Man has

  1784. turned his

  1785. back upon

  1786. God.

  1787. Man has

  1788. chosen his

  1789. own way.

  1790. So he

  1791. tries to

  1792. hide.

  1793. He doesn't

  1794. want the

  1795. light.

  1796. He doesn't

  1797. want to

  1798. come near

  1799. the light.

  1800. The light

  1801. is now

  1802. distasteful

  1803. to him.

  1804. The God

  1805. with whom

  1806. he wants

  1807. love to

  1808. have

  1809. fellowship

  1810. is now

  1811. the one

  1812. he wants

  1813. to be as

  1814. far away

  1815. from as

  1816. possible.

  1817. You see

  1818. what's

  1819. happened

  1820. in people's

  1821. hearts

  1822. and why

  1823. they love

  1824. the darkness

  1825. rather than

  1826. the light

  1827. that become

  1828. corrupt

  1829. inwardly.

  1830. And that

  1831. passage goes

  1832. on.

  1833. And God

  1834. said,

  1835. the Lord

  1836. God called

  1837. to the

  1838. man and

  1839. said,

  1840. where are

  1841. you?

  1842. And he

  1843. said,

  1844. I heard

  1845. the sound

  1846. of you

  1847. in the

  1848. garden

  1849. and I

  1850. was

  1851. afraid.

  1852. I was

  1853. afraid

  1854. and I

  1855. hid myself.

  1856. And you

  1857. see,

  1858. that's one

  1859. of the

  1860. reasons

  1861. that people

  1862. shun the

  1863. light.

  1864. They don't

  1865. want the

  1866. light.

  1867. They will

  1868. not come

  1869. to the

  1870. light because

  1871. they're afraid

  1872. of the

  1873. light.

  1874. They know

  1875. the light

  1876. exposes

  1877. sin.

  1878. They know

  1879. the light

  1880. puts us

  1881. to the

  1882. test.

  1883. They know

  1884. the light

  1885. contains

  1886. things

  1887. which

  1888. will

  1889. actually

  1890. call

  1891. upon

  1892. us

  1893. to

  1894. change

  1895. our

  1896. way

  1897. of

  1898. life.

  1899. And so

  1900. we shun

  1901. that.

  1902. We hide

  1903. from that.

  1904. It's not

  1905. to our

  1906. taste.

  1907. God

  1908. to our

  1909. people

  1910. do this

  1911. so that

  1912. their

  1913. deeds

  1914. should

  1915. not

  1916. be

  1917. exposed.

  1918. It's the

  1919. best

  1920. translation

  1921. I think.

  1922. It says

  1923. here,

  1924. lest their

  1925. deeds

  1926. should be

  1927. exposed,

  1928. but it's

  1929. more than

  1930. that,

  1931. so that

  1932. their

  1933. deeds

  1934. be not

  1935. exposed.

  1936. And the

  1937. word

  1938. exposed

  1939. means

  1940. much

  1941. more

  1942. than

  1943. just

  1944. brought

  1945. to

  1946. life

  1947. and

  1948. being

  1949. revealed.

  1950. It

  1951. actually

  1952. means

  1953. include

  1954. such

  1955. ideas

  1956. as

  1957. shame,

  1958. conviction,

  1959. condemnation,

  1960. the word

  1961. that's used

  1962. here in

  1963. verse 19.

  1964. That's

  1965. what the

  1966. light

  1967. does.

  1968. It

  1969. exposes

  1970. things

  1971. judgmentally.

  1972. You

  1973. can't

  1974. place

  1975. your life

  1976. under the

  1977. light of

  1978. God's

  1979. word,

  1980. of God's

  1981. truth,

  1982. and not

  1983. expect it

  1984. to bring

  1985. up things

  1986. which will

  1987. be distasteful

  1988. to you.

  1989. Which will

  1990. actually

  1991. initially

  1992. condemn

  1993. you until

  1994. God shows

  1995. you that

  1996. your

  1997. condemnation

  1998. has been

  1999. accounted for

  2000. in Jesus,

  2001. and you

  2002. accept him,

  2003. and your

  2004. condemnation

  2005. is then

  2006. removed.

  2007. But that's

  2008. what God's

  2009. truth does.

  2010. It tests,

  2011. it tries,

  2012. it convicts,

  2013. and so

  2014. those people

  2015. who hate

  2016. the light

  2017. shun it

  2018. and don't

  2019. want it.

  2020. That's the

  2021. contrast,

  2022. the first

  2023. contrast,

  2024. those who

  2025. hate the

  2026. light,

  2027. and it's

  2028. contrasted

  2029. with,

  2030. I went

  2031. through this

  2032. very quickly,

  2033. those who

  2034. approach the

  2035. light,

  2036. whoever does

  2037. what is

  2038. true,

  2039. and again

  2040. literally it's

  2041. whoever does

  2042. the truth,

  2043. the truth as

  2044. God has

  2045. revealed that

  2046. in Jesus,

  2047. the truth

  2048. that's revealed

  2049. in the light

  2050. that Christ

  2051. is,

  2052. the light

  2053. of God's

  2054. truth.

  2055. Whoever

  2056. does the

  2057. truth,

  2058. and you take

  2059. John 14

    John 14:6

  2060. verse 6,

  2061. Jesus said,

  2062. I am the

  2063. way,

  2064. the truth,

  2065. and the

  2066. life.

  2067. You go to

  2068. John 17

  2069. where Jesus

  2070. prays to

  2071. the Father,

  2072. Father sanctify

  2073. them,

  2074. sanctify the

  2075. disciples,

  2076. your people,

  2077. through your

  2078. truth,

  2079. your word

  2080. is truth.

  2081. Jesus,

  2082. the person

  2083. of Jesus,

  2084. the word

  2085. of God,

  2086. the truth

  2087. of God,

  2088. this is what

  2089. he's saying,

  2090. those who do

  2091. the truth,

  2092. in other words,

  2093. what he means

  2094. by that is

  2095. those who

  2096. live in

  2097. obedience to

  2098. Christ.

  2099. that's the

  2100. big distinction,

  2101. that's the

  2102. big difference,

  2103. that's the

  2104. great contrast,

  2105. those who

  2106. reject the

  2107. light,

  2108. those who

  2109. love the

  2110. darkness,

  2111. those who

  2112. do wicked

  2113. things,

  2114. those who

  2115. don't come

  2116. to the

  2117. light,

  2118. these are

  2119. so much

  2120. a contrast

  2121. to those

  2122. who love

  2123. the light,

  2124. who want

  2125. more of

  2126. the light,

  2127. who draw

  2128. near to

  2129. the light,

  2130. so that

  2131. their deeds

  2132. may be seen

  2133. to be carried

  2134. out in

  2135. God.

  2136. It's the

  2137. doing that

  2138. pleases

  2139. God,

  2140. in contrast

  2141. with the

  2142. doing of

  2143. the previous

  2144. verse,

  2145. the doing

  2146. wicked

  2147. things that

  2148. please

  2149. themselves.

  2150. The

  2151. contrasts

  2152. are all

  2153. the way

  2154. through

  2155. every

  2156. strand,

  2157. every layer

  2158. of our

  2159. society

  2160. today.

  2161. So what

  2162. should our

  2163. reaction be

  2164. to this?

  2165. It's one

  2166. thing to

  2167. know all

  2168. about this,

  2169. things.

  2170. But where

  2171. does that

  2172. leave

  2173. ourselves

  2174. as a

  2175. Christian

  2176. congregation,

  2177. as Christian

  2178. people?

  2179. Well, of

  2180. course, it

  2181. means that

  2182. we ourselves

  2183. first of

  2184. all must

  2185. come to

  2186. the light,

  2187. must come

  2188. to the

  2189. Lord,

  2190. must come

  2191. to give

  2192. our life

  2193. over to

  2194. Jesus,

  2195. to the

  2196. light,

  2197. and not

  2198. shun it,

  2199. and not

  2200. put it

  2201. aside,

  2202. and not

  2203. be like

  2204. those here

  2205. who hate

  2206. the light.

  2207. But having

  2208. done that,

  2209. I want to

  2210. speak of

  2211. someone near

  2212. the beginning

  2213. of the

  2214. chapter,

  2215. Nicodemus.

  2216. Because it's

  2217. very interesting

  2218. that these

  2219. verses are

  2220. in the

  2221. context of

  2222. Nicodemus

  2223. being addressed

  2224. by the

  2225. Lord.

  2226. You see,

  2227. Nicodemus

  2228. came by

  2229. night.

  2230. And what's

  2231. night?

  2232. It's the

  2233. opposite of

  2234. daylight.

  2235. And it

  2236. doesn't just

  2237. mean this

  2238. literally.

  2239. I think in

  2240. the spiritual

  2241. meaning,

  2242. in the

  2243. theology of

  2244. John,

  2245. light and

  2246. darkness

  2247. have a

  2248. profound

  2249. theological

  2250. and spiritual

  2251. meaning.

  2252. So when

  2253. Nicodemus

  2254. came by

  2255. night to

  2256. Jesus,

  2257. it wasn't

  2258. just so that

  2259. he wouldn't

  2260. be seen by

  2261. his fellow

  2262. members of

  2263. the Sanhedrin,

  2264. the fellow

  2265. teachers of

  2266. Israel.

  2267. John is

  2268. really presenting

  2269. us with a

  2270. spiritual truth

  2271. in that he

  2272. was still in

  2273. darkness

  2274. spiritually.

  2275. He didn't

  2276. know the

  2277. Lord.

  2278. He was

  2279. interested.

  2280. He had

  2281. come to

  2282. take note

  2283. of him,

  2284. but now he

  2285. wants to

  2286. find out

  2287. something else

  2288. from him.

  2289. But he's

  2290. still in

  2291. darkness

  2292. spiritually and

  2293. morally.

  2294. And as you

  2295. trace Nicodemus

  2296. through John's

  2297. gospel,

  2298. you'll find

  2299. something very

  2300. interesting.

  2301. He appears

  2302. again in

  2303. chapter 7,

  2304. where he's

  2305. not yet

  2306. really set

  2307. out as a

  2308. true believer

  2309. in Christ,

  2310. but he is

  2311. actually speaking

  2312. against those

  2313. who want to

  2314. bring Christ

  2315. under arrest

  2316. and try him

  2317. and are

  2318. obviously

  2319. antagonistic

  2320. to him.

  2321. And what he

  2322. says there

  2323. near the end

  2324. of chapter 7,

  2325. as you have

  2326. it,

  2327. is Nicodemus

  2328. speaking up

  2329. against the

  2330. Pharisees,

  2331. against the

  2332. rulers,

  2333. and the

  2334. officers that

  2335. came back

  2336. with this

  2337. opinion about

  2338. Jesus,

  2339. no one ever

  2340. spoke like

  2341. this man.

  2342. Pharisees

  2343. said,

  2344. have you

  2345. also been

  2346. deceived?

  2347. Have any

  2348. of the

  2349. authorities

  2350. of the

  2351. Pharisees

  2352. believed in

  2353. him?

  2354. This crowd,

  2355. this rabble,

  2356. that's what it

  2357. means,

  2358. who don't

  2359. know the

  2360. law,

  2361. they're

  2362. cursed.

  2363. Nicodemus,

  2364. who had

  2365. gone to

  2366. him before,

  2367. and who

  2368. was one

  2369. of them,

  2370. one of the

  2371. Pharisees,

  2372. said,

  2373. does our

  2374. law judge

  2375. a man

  2376. without

  2377. first giving

  2378. him a

  2379. hearing,

  2380. and learning

  2381. what he

  2382. does?

  2383. And what's

  2384. the reaction?

  2385. Oh,

  2386. instant

  2387. opposition,

  2388. instant

  2389. antagonism.

  2390. They replied,

  2391. are you

  2392. also from

  2393. Galilee?

  2394. Do you

  2395. belong to

  2396. him as

  2397. well?

  2398. Are you

  2399. a disciple

  2400. of his

  2401. as well?

  2402. Search

  2403. and see

  2404. that no

  2405. prophet

  2406. arises from

  2407. Galilee.

  2408. There's

  2409. instant

  2410. hostility,

  2411. instant

  2412. rejection,

  2413. even at the

  2414. thought of

  2415. him being

  2416. associated

  2417. with Jesus.

  2418. And the

  2419. third

  2420. appearance,

  2421. well,

  2422. where's

  2423. that?

  2424. That's

  2425. in chapter

  2426. 19 and

  2427. verse 39.

  2428. Joseph of

  2429. Arimathea,

  2430. Jesus has

  2431. died on

  2432. the cross,

  2433. and Joseph

  2434. came and

  2435. asked Pilate

  2436. to give him

  2437. permission to

  2438. take the

  2439. body of

  2440. Jesus away.

  2441. Nicodemus

  2442. also,

  2443. who earlier

  2444. had come

  2445. to Jesus

  2446. by night,

  2447. came bringing

  2448. a mixture of

  2449. myrrh and

  2450. aloes and

  2451. 75 pounds

  2452. in weight,

  2453. they took

  2454. the body

  2455. of Jesus

  2456. bounded

  2457. in linen

  2458. cloths as

  2459. the burial

  2460. custom of

  2461. the Jews,

  2462. and they

  2463. buried him

  2464. in this

  2465. new tomb

  2466. in the

  2467. garden.

  2468. You see

  2469. what's

  2470. happened?

  2471. He's come

  2472. to be

  2473. interested in

  2474. Jesus in

  2475. chapter 3.

  2476. He's come

  2477. closer to

  2478. being a

  2479. follower of

  2480. Jesus in

  2481. chapter 7.

  2482. He speaks

  2483. up for

  2484. him,

  2485. or to an

  2486. extent in

  2487. defense for

  2488. him.

  2489. And then

  2490. in chapter

  2491. 19,

  2492. he comes

  2493. out on

  2494. the side

  2495. of Jesus.

  2496. And he

  2497. comes out

  2498. on the

  2499. side of

  2500. Jesus with

  2501. his special

  2502. reference to

  2503. the cross and

  2504. to the death

  2505. of Christ.

  2506. Now,

  2507. where does

  2508. that leave us

  2509. in regard to

  2510. the disintegration

  2511. of our

  2512. society?

  2513. What is the

  2514. answer to

  2515. that?

  2516. Well, the

  2517. answer is

  2518. people's lives

  2519. being changed.

  2520. The answer

  2521. isn't people

  2522. coming to

  2523. experience what

  2524. Nicodemus

  2525. experienced in

  2526. being born

  2527. again.

  2528. Because society

  2529. will not

  2530. change until

  2531. the individuals

  2532. change.

  2533. And for the

  2534. individuals to

  2535. change takes

  2536. the power of

  2537. God.

  2538. The power

  2539. that brings

  2540. rebirth.

  2541. The power

  2542. that enables

  2543. us to turn

  2544. and move out

  2545. of the light

  2546. and come out

  2547. of the darkness

  2548. and come into

  2549. the light.

  2550. And to love

  2551. the light.

  2552. Instead of

  2553. loving the

  2554. darkness.

  2555. And that's

  2556. what needs

  2557. to happen.

  2558. That's what

  2559. we need to

  2560. pray for.

  2561. I know you're

  2562. praying for it,

  2563. but we need

  2564. to pray for it

  2565. with all the

  2566. more earnestness.

  2567. When we

  2568. realize that

  2569. this is one

  2570. of the

  2571. underlying

  2572. factors of

  2573. what's

  2574. happening in

  2575. our society,

  2576. our prayers

  2577. need to be

  2578. more consistent,

  2579. firmly fixed

  2580. upon the

  2581. situation as

  2582. it is,

  2583. convinced us

  2584. we should be

  2585. that only

  2586. God's

  2587. reviving power

  2588. is going to

  2589. change this.

  2590. That the

  2591. only thing

  2592. that's going

  2593. to change

  2594. us is

  2595. changed

  2596. people and

  2597. people changed

  2598. by the

  2599. power of

  2600. God.

  2601. Friends,

  2602. this is vital.

  2603. We have the

  2604. privileged position

  2605. of looking at

  2606. what's happening

  2607. around us and

  2608. having the

  2609. privilege of

  2610. calling upon

  2611. and beseeching

  2612. our God

  2613. to come to

  2614. actually intervene,

  2615. to come to

  2616. change things

  2617. by changing

  2618. people,

  2619. by giving

  2620. ourselves

  2621. further

  2622. impetus

  2623. spiritually,

  2624. to be on

  2625. our knees

  2626. more constantly,

  2627. and I'm

  2628. speaking to

  2629. myself,

  2630. to actually

  2631. appeal to

  2632. God,

  2633. because unless

  2634. that happens,

  2635. the darkness

  2636. is going to

  2637. actually grow.

  2638. More and more

  2639. people are going

  2640. to be enveloped

  2641. in the darkness.

  2642. Now,

  2643. we're not

  2644. saying this

  2645. to discourage

  2646. you,

  2647. so we become

  2648. despondent,

  2649. or reach a

  2650. level of near

  2651. despair.

  2652. This passage

  2653. is telling us,

  2654. this is why

  2655. things are as

  2656. they are.

  2657. But look at

  2658. Nicodemus.

  2659. This is how

  2660. things can be

  2661. changed from

  2662. what they are

  2663. to what they

  2664. should be.

  2665. May God

  2666. bless his

  2667. word to us.

  2668. Let's pray.

  2669. Lord,

  2670. our God,

  2671. you have

  2672. brought before

  2673. us in your

  2674. word how

  2675. your people

  2676. are described

  2677. by you as

  2678. the light

  2679. of the world.

  2680. And you

  2681. call upon us,

  2682. Lord,

  2683. to let our

  2684. light shine

  2685. before people,

  2686. so that they

  2687. may see our

  2688. good works

  2689. and bring glory

  2690. to our

  2691. Father who

  2692. is in heaven.

  2693. Forgive us,

  2694. we pray,

  2695. O Lord,

  2696. whenever we

  2697. fall short

  2698. of this,

  2699. as we often

  2700. do.

  2701. Forgive us

  2702. for our

  2703. reluctance.

  2704. Forgive us

  2705. for our

  2706. coziness with

  2707. the world.

  2708. Forgive us,

  2709. Lord,

  2710. for every

  2711. way in

  2712. which we

  2713. have failed

  2714. to live up

  2715. to the

  2716. standard of

  2717. being your

  2718. people as

  2719. lights in

  2720. the world.

  2721. Lord,

  2722. be merciful to

  2723. this generation,

  2724. we pray.

  2725. Bring about,

  2726. we pray,

  2727. that change

  2728. that only you

  2729. can.

  2730. Grant to

  2731. us the

  2732. power of

  2733. your spirit.

  2734. Grant to

  2735. us the

  2736. force of

  2737. your truth.

  2738. O give

  2739. people,

  2740. Lord,

  2741. to see

  2742. the wastage

  2743. of human

  2744. life without

  2745. you,

  2746. the grotesqueness

  2747. of ungodliness,

  2748. the way in

  2749. which it is

  2750. an affront to

  2751. you and

  2752. your eyes.

  2753. Lord,

  2754. we pray in

  2755. your mercy

  2756. that you

  2757. would indeed

  2758. turn us as

  2759. a people,

  2760. and to that

  2761. end we pray

  2762. again for

  2763. those who

  2764. rule over

  2765. us,

  2766. for the

  2767. governments

  2768. in our

  2769. land,

  2770. for the

  2771. king on

  2772. the throne,

  2773. for,

  2774. Lord,

  2775. all those

  2776. who have

  2777. such places

  2778. of eminence

  2779. and authority

  2780. and influence

  2781. in our

  2782. land.

  2783. Bring

  2784. them under

  2785. the influence

  2786. of the

  2787. gospel,

  2788. the influence

  2789. of your

  2790. truth,

  2791. the influence

  2792. of the

  2793. light,

  2794. and turn

  2795. them from

  2796. the love

  2797. of darkness

  2798. into the

  2799. love of

  2800. Christ.

  2801. We pray

  2802. in his

  2803. name.

  2804. Amen.

  2805. Now,

  2806. the final

  2807. singing

  2808. today is

  2809. Psalm 119,

  2810. Psalm 119,

  2811. and that's

  2812. at page

  2813. 164.

  2814. We're

  2815. singing

  2816. verses

  2817. 113

  2818. to

  2819. 120.

  2820. And the

  2821. tune this

  2822. time is

  2823. Finart.

  2824. The

  2825. double-minded

  2826. I abhor,

  2827. but your

  2828. commands I

  2829. love,

  2830. O Lord.

  2831. You are

  2832. my refuge

  2833. and my

  2834. shield.

  2835. I've

  2836. set my

  2837. hope upon

  2838. your word.

  2839. You

  2840. evildoers,

  2841. leave me

  2842. now,

  2843. that God's

  2844. commands I

  2845. may obey.

  2846. By your

  2847. word keep

  2848. me,

  2849. I shall

  2850. live.

  2851. Let not

  2852. my hope

  2853. be swept

  2854. away.

  2855. The

  2856. psalmist's

  2857. concern to

  2858. be different,

  2859. to be an

  2860. alternative to

  2861. the ungodliness

  2862. of his own

  2863. age,

  2864. similar to

  2865. what we've

  2866. been thinking

  2867. of this

  2868. morning.

  2869. So,

  2870. these verses

  2871. 113 to

  2872. 120,

  2873. the

  2874. double-minded

  2875. I

  2876. abhor.

  2877. Amen.

  2878. The

  2879. double-minded

  2880. I

  2881. have

  2882. more,

  2883. but

  2884. your

  2885. commands

  2886. my

  2887. love,

  2888. O Lord.

  2889. You

  2890. are

  2891. my

  2892. refuge

  2893. and

  2894. my

  2895. shield.

  2896. I

  2897. set

  2898. my

  2899. hope

  2900. upon

  2901. your

  2902. word.

  2903. You

  2904. need

  2905. to

  2906. achieve

  2907. me

  2908. now,

  2909. that God's

  2910. promise

  2911. I

  2912. may

  2913. obey,

  2914. I

  2915. cure,

  2916. your

  2917. word,

  2918. give me

  2919. I

  2920. shall

  2921. live,

  2922. let

  2923. not

  2924. my

  2925. hope

  2926. be

  2927. swept

  2928. away.

  2929. upon

  2930. me

  2931. and I

  2932. shall

  2933. be

  2934. saved,

  2935. for

  2936. your

  2937. deeds

  2938. I

  2939. have

  2940. respect,

  2941. which I

  2942. have

  2943. respect,

  2944. all

  2945. those

  2946. who

  2947. stray

  2948. from

  2949. your

  2950. commands,

  2951. and

  2952. practice

  2953. all

  2954. to

  2955. do,

  2956. reject,

  2957. you

  2958. reject.

  2959. The

  2960. wicked

  2961. you

  2962. discard

  2963. my

  2964. cross,

  2965. therefore

  2966. I

  2967. love

  2968. your

  2969. holy

  2970. law,

  2971. my

  2972. holy

  2973. grace

  2974. for

  2975. your

  2976. holy

  2977. law,

  2978. my

  2979. holy

  2980. grace

  2981. grace

  2982. for

  2983. me

  2984. of

  2985. you,

  2986. of

  2987. your

  2988. all

  2989. hands

  2990. I

  2991. stand

  2992. in

  2993. all.

  2994. Now I

  2995. take it the

2996. main door is actually being used to vacate the building, if not you'll be given

2997. directions, yes it is open, okay, so that's fine. I'll go to this door to my right this morning.

2998. Now may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you now and evermore. Amen.
