  1. We begin our worship of God this evening, and our first singing is Psalm 9.

  2. Psalm number 9 in the Sing Psalms version, that's page 9.

  3. The tune is Glasgow, and singing verses 7 to 12.

  4. The Lord forever reigns on high, His throne for judgment stands.

  5. He'll judge the world in righteousness, with justice rule the lands.

  6. Psalm 9a, page number 9, from verse 7.

  7. If you're able to stand, please stand, and we'll sing these verses.

  8. Amen.

  9. The Lord will be a hiding place for those who are in the land.

  10. With justice rule the lands.

  11. The Lord will be a hiding place for those who are in the land.

  12. And he will be a strong defense for those who are in the land.

  13. All those who know your name, O Lord, they knew their gospel place.

  14. For you do not have found the close, who sing your gracious ways.

  15. Sing praises to the Lord who says,

  16. And Zion on his throne.

  17. Among the nations of the world proclaim what he has done.

  18. For he, the Lord, he has done.

  19. For he, the angel of the land's blood, remembers evermore.

  20. The cry of the Lord, the cry of the Lord, he never will be more.

  21. Let's call upon the Lord now in prayer.

  22. Let's join our minds together in prayer.

  23. Our gracious and eternal God,

  24. we give thanks for this time again that we're able to gather around your word,

  25. that we're able to call upon your name and sing your praises,

  26. and to give our mind to the teaching of your word.

  27. And we thank you, Lord, for every opportunity we do have to worship you,

  28. and to worship you to the notice of the world around us,

  29. so that we may keep before the mind of the world

  30. the fact that we believe in you as our God,

  31. that we believe in your worthiness to be worshipped,

  32. and that we ourselves would prove as we hope to be the conscience of the world.

  33. And, Lord, we ask to that end that you would enable us in reaching out to the world,

  34. in different ways apart from our gathering together,

  35. that we may rely upon your own power and your own blessing.

  36. Lord, we ask again that you would guide us into your word of truth this evening.

  37. We thank you for these great words that we have already been singing,

  38. of the way in which you remember your people,

  39. and for the way in which your remembrance contains so much blessing for us.

  40. We thank you that your people are ever in your thoughts.

  41. There is never a moment in our passing of time when your people are out of your mind.

  42. And we bless you, Lord, for the peace that that brings to us.

  43. For we know how much we ourselves, Lord, are prone to forget,

  44. how much we are prone to wander from your ways,

  45. and need to be recovered.

  46. And we pray that you would grant us tonight, O Lord,

  47. that your word will speak to us,

  48. and that we will know, Lord, that our lives have once again been affected by it.

  49. Shape our minds and our thoughts, we pray,

  50. through the truth of your word.

  51. And give to us that we may be all the more burdened

  52. to convey the teaching of your word to the world around us too.

  53. We ask, Lord, that you remember every gathering of your people this evening.

  54. We pray that wherever they gather,

  55. and wherever your people gather and have gathered throughout the world,

  56. we ask that your blessing that we seek for ourselves will be with them.

  57. We pray that your Holy Spirit will be active amongst them.

  58. We pray that they may know your guidance and your counsel,

  59. and your strengthening of them to continue to live as your people.

  60. We pray, Lord, at this time that you would be pleased to bless us as a people,

  61. as a congregation of your people.

  62. Bless us in all the activities we engage in.

  63. Thank you for the privilege of being able to serve you

  64. in the different ways in which we as individuals do so

  65. in this congregation and in our community.

  66. And, Lord, we ask that all our efforts may prove to be blessed by you

  67. and pleasing to you.

  68. For we seek, Lord, that they will be so.

  69. That they will be used by you as means and as channels of blessing to others.

  70. And we ask that you would grant your blessing, therefore,

  71. to all age groups in the congregation

  72. in all their activities through each week.

  73. We thank you for your protective care of us.

  74. We pray that that will continue.

  75. And enable us, O Lord, at all our age groups to walk in your ways.

  76. And as we teach our children your ways, we ask that you would establish them in these ways.

  77. And that you would give to them, O Lord, to take up the work of the gospel in their own time.

  78. We pray that they may be faithful testimony to you and to your grace.

  79. As they would come by your blessing to be incorporated into the number of your confessing people.

  80. And we ask, O God, that you would grant blessing to those tonight who cannot be with us.

  81. Remember those who are confined to their homes.

  82. Those who are watching online.

  83. We ask, Lord, that you'd bless those in care homes.

  84. Those, Lord, in hospital.

  85. We pray that you'd grant your blessing to all such who belong to us.

  86. And bless us in our families and strengthen us.

  87. And the ties that bind us together as families.

  88. The ties that bind us together as a people in the congregation.

  89. We pray tonight that you'd bless those who are facing difficulties and struggles in life.

  90. We ask again that you'd bless those we know and those who belong to us.

  91. Who may be struggling financially.

  92. Who may have many anxieties, O Lord.

  93. Lord, in these days over different issues.

  94. We pray that those who are struggling also with health.

  95. Whether mental health or physical health.

  96. That they too may know your blessing.

  97. We pray for those who are preparing for surgery or for treatment in days to come.

  98. We commend them, Lord, to your care.

  99. And ask that your blessing will reach them too.

  100. We pray that you would prepare us all for eventualities that lie ahead of us in your providence.

  101. We pray that we may know the strength of your grace.

  102. So that whatever we need to confront, Lord, we may do so.

  103. In the confidence that the strength and grace of Christ brings to us.

  104. Remember those who are seriously ill.

  105. And who in likelihood are approaching the borders of death.

  106. We pray that you would grant them your blessing and strengthening too.

  107. And Lord, we ask that you would give them the faith that trusts in you.

  108. So that they may know that safe way and conduct of them into heaven itself.

  109. And we pray your blessing too, O Lord, for all who help us in our times of need in our community.

  110. And we give thanks for them.

  111. We pray for all the medical staff.

  112. For all who look after those in care homes and in the hospice.

  113. And we commit this to you and ask your blessing for each and all of them.

  114. And all the residents and all the patients.

  115. We pray for the Corlea, for those, Lord, who are counselors of the various districts of this ward.

  116. And we pray, gracious one, that you would grant your blessing to them and all other wards likewise.

  117. We pray for those who are officers of the council.

  118. We pray that you would bless them from day to day.

  119. And give them, Lord, in difficult and testing times.

  120. And we pray for those who are counselors of the people, both financially and otherwise.

  121. That they may come to depend upon yourself and provide for them, we pray.

  122. And for us as a people.

  123. We pray, Lord, in the wider sense for the people of our nation.

  124. And ask that you would bless us.

  125. We confess, Lord, to our shame that we have so departed from your ways so badly.

  126. That we have come to love the works of darkness in such a large measure.

  127. And we pray that you would deliver us, Lord, from that.

  128. We pray that the power and the grace of the gospel, the power and the grace of Christ may come to work among us through your Spirit.

  129. And we pray, gracious one, in your mercy that you would turn to us and turn us to you.

  130. That you would restore the many years the locusts have eaten, as your word describes it.

  131. Many years of wastage.

  132. Many years when we have looked to other means of sufficiency that cannot possibly be in your place.

  133. And we pray, gracious one, that you would return us to yourself and to your ways and to your gospel and to your truth.

  134. Remember your faithful people, Lord, throughout our land.

  135. As they cry to you for blessing.

  136. As they pray to you.

  137. Remember them each one and all of them alike.

  138. Remember our young people.

  139. Be with them.

  140. Those in preschool and those in primary and those in secondary.

  141. And as they too face so many challenges in life.

  142. Lord, we pray for them and ask that you would keep them and maintain them.

  143. And help them, Lord, to walk in ways of truth and righteousness and wholesomeness.

  144. We pray for our teachers, for all who teach our young people in school and children in primary.

  145. Oh, Lord, we pray for them too.

  146. And ask that you would be with them in the challenges that they face too.

  147. And bless especially our governments at this time.

  148. We pray for those who are in authority over us.

  149. And we ask, gracious one, that you'd be pleased to bless them with light from on high.

  150. With the wisdom that you alone are able to give.

  151. And with that which would enable them to rule wisely.

  152. To govern justly and in righteousness and in truth.

  153. We ask that you would bless our king.

  154. That you'd bless him towards his coronation shortly.

  155. Lord, we ask that you would keep him also.

  156. And grant to him that he may be faithful to the truth of the scriptures.

  157. That he may know, Lord, of your own guidance of him through that truth.

  158. We pray for those who help in other ways in our community.

  159. We pray for our street pastors.

  160. We commend them to you, Lord.

  161. Especially those of them newly inducted to the office of street pastor in recent days.

  162. And we pray that your blessing will be with them.

  163. And to that end we commend them to you.

  164. And we pray too, O Lord, that your blessing will be with those in Tolstah.

  165. And with Donald himself.

  166. As he prepares to be married spiritually to that congregation.

  167. We thank you for the way that you have brought this about.

  168. And we pray for himself.

  169. And we pray for the congregation.

  170. We pray for him too in his personal life.

  171. That you will bless himself and Emma as they anticipate marriage.

  172. O Lord, we commend them to you as a couple.

  173. And pray that your blessing will rest upon them in these new chapters in their lives.

  174. And we commend them to you and to your grace.

  175. Remember too, Eoin and Don.

  176. You have recently become engaged.

  177. We thank you for them.

  178. And for the happy news of their engagement.

  179. And Lord, we ask that your blessing will be with them.

  180. As they come to anticipate married life together.

  181. We thank you for them and for their testimony.

  182. To your grace and to your goodness.

  183. And we pray that you would keep them and help them, Lord.

  184. As they together now show their love for each other to the world.

  185. Maintain them, we pray, in walking in your ways.

  186. Grant these blessings to us now, we pray.

  187. Pardoning our many sins for Jesus' sake.

  188. Amen.

  189. Let's continue to praise God.

  190. This time we're singing in Psalm 63.

  191. Psalm 63.

  192. Again, this is the Scottish Psalms.

  193. The Sing Psalms.

  194. That's on page number 80.

  195. Verses 1 to 8.

  196. The tune this time is Rockingham.

  197. O God, you are my God alone.

  198. I seek your face with eagerness.

  199. My soul and body thirst for you in this dry, weary wilderness.

  200. Psalm 63.

  201. To the tune Rockingham.

  202. Verses 1 to 8.

  203. Amen.

  204. O God, you are my God alone.

  205. I seek your face with eagerness.

  206. My soul and body thirst for you in this dry, weary wilderness.

  207. I've seen you live in your holy place.

  208. Your power and glory held my gaze.

  209. Our day the midst you're loved and mine, and so my lips will sing your praise.

  210. I'll bless you, Lord, throughout my life, and praise my love to you in prayer.

  211. My joyfulness will sing your praise.

  212. My soul is fed with riches dear.

  213. Upon my bed I lie awake, and in my thoughts remember you.

  214. I meditate throughout the night, and keep your constant love in view.

  215. Because you are my help alone, in shadow of your wings I sing.

  216. You hold me up with your right hand.

  217. To you, O Lord, I so will bring.

  218. Let's turn to read God's Word.

  219. The reading this evening is in Matthew's Gospel, chapter 28.

  220. And reading through the whole chapter, we're going to turn again this evening to 1 Corinthians 15,

  221. to that great chapter about the resurrection.

  222. So in Matthew 28 we read about the resurrection of Jesus himself from the dead.

  223. Now after the Sabbath towards the dawn of the first day of the week,

  224. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.

  225. And behold, there was a great earthquake,

  226. for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven,

  227. and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.

  228. His appearance was like lightning,

  229. and his clothing white as snow.

  230. And for fear of him the guards trembled,

  231. and became like dead men.

  232. But the angel said to the woman,

  233. Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus, who was crucified.

  234. He is not here, for he has risen.

  235. As he said, come, see,

  236. he has risen, as he said,

  237. and come, see the place where he lay.

  238. Then go quickly and tell his disciples

  239. that he has risen from the dead.

  240. And behold, he is going before you to Galilee,

  241. there you will see him.

  242. See, I have told you.

  243. So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy,

  244. and ran to tell his disciples.

  245. And behold, Jesus met them and said,

  246. Greetings.

  247. And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshipped him.

  248. And Jesus said to them,

  249. Do not be afraid.

  250. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee,

  251. and there they will see me.

  252. While they were going,

  253. behold, some of the guard went into the city

  254. and told the chief priests all that had taken place.

  255. And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel,

  256. they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers and said,

  257. Tell people his disciples came by night

  258. and stole him away while we were asleep.

  259. And if this comes to the governor's ears,

  260. we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.

  261. So they took the money and did as they were directed.

  262. And this story has been spread among the Jews to this day.

  263. Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee,

  264. to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.

  265. And when they saw him,

  266. they worshipped him,

  267. but some doubted.

  268. And Jesus came and said to them,

  269. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

  270. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,

  271. baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

  272. teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.

  273. And behold, I am with you always to the end of the age.

  274. Again, we pray that God will bless to us that reading of his word.

  275. Once more, let's sing before we come to 1 Corinthians 15.

  276. And this time it's in Psalm 68.

  277. Psalm 68 on page 303 of the psalm books.

  278. And the tune is Sheffield.

  279. Singing verses 18 to 20.

  280. Thou hast, O Lord, most glorious, ascended up on high,

  281. and in triumph victorious led captive captivity.

  282. Thou hast received gifts for men for such as did rebel,

  283. yea, even for them that God the Lord in midst of them might dwell.

  284. Psalm 68, the verses marked 18 to 20 to God's praise.

  285. The Lord in the midst of the psalm books.

  286. The Lord in the midst of the psalm books.

  287. Thou hast, O Lord, most glorious,

  288. ascended upon high,

  289. and in triumph victorious led captive captive captive captive captive captive.

  290. Thou hast received gifts for men for such as did rebel.

  291. Thou hast received gifts for men for such as did rebel.

  292. And yet he for them that God the Lord in midst of them might dwell.

  293. The land's deep, the Lord who is to us,

  294. all our salvation, all.

  295. Thou hast, O Lord, most glorious, ascended upon high,

  296. and in triumph of the Lord in the midst of the Lord's name.

  297. Thou hast, O Lord, most glorious, as did rebel.

  298. He of salvation is the God, who is our God, O song.

  299. And that to God, the Lord from death, the issues to belong.

  300. Well, let's turn now to 1 Corinthians 15 and reading at verse 20.

  301. 1 Corinthians chapter 15 and at verse 20.

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  302. But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.

  303. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead.

  304. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive, but each in his own order.

  305. Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ.

  306. Then comes the end when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father,

  307. after destroying every rule and every authority and power.

  308. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.

  309. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

  310. Now we're going to confine our thoughts this evening to verses 20 to 22.

  311. Because there's enough in these three verses to keep our minds occupied for some time this evening.

  312. Now you see in verses, remember,

  313. previously we've looked at the early part of the chapter up to verse 20 here.

  314. And verses 1 to 19, we've seen the consequences in different ways.

  315. Described the consequences.

  316. If there were no such thing as resurrection,

  317. Paul has been dealing with some of the consequences,

  318. both with regard to Jesus himself.

  319. He must not,

  320. if there's no resurrection,

  321. then he could not have been raised from the dead.

  322. And also there is no such thing as resurrection for us to anticipate either.

  323. So all the way through,

  324. he's been dealing with these if-then sort of statements.

  325. If this is the case,

  326. then this is what follows.

  327. And you get the impression that he was longing,

  328. and I'm sure he was longing in many ways,

  329. to get to verse 20 here,

  330. where he says,

  331. but in fact,

  332. is this really what he wants to get to now?

  333. And for the following verses in the chapter,

  334. he wants to really get to this point

  335. where he can demonstrate assuredly

  336. that Jesus has, in fact,

  337. been raised from the dead.

  338. That there has been such a thing as resurrection

  339. in the case of Jesus himself.

  340. And therefore, that things follow on from that also.

  341. So in a sense,

  342. he's reversing the argument.

  343. Previously, he said,

  344. if there's no resurrection,

  345. then Christ is not raised,

  346. then we are still in our sins,

  347. then there's no hope for us for eternity.

  348. Now he's turning that round and saying,

  349. but now that Christ has been raised from the dead,

  350. then this is what follows now

  351. by virtue of that.

  352. But in fact,

  353. Christ has been raised from the dead.

  354. And the first thing we want to look at

  355. is how he says that in such an assured way,

  356. but also describes it in terms of Jesus being

  357. the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.

  358. And then we'll come secondly

  359. to look at something Paul speaks of elsewhere,

  360. as we'll see in Romans chapter 5 especially,

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  361. where he brings out the relationship

  362. between Jesus and Adam,

  363. the first man created by God.

  364. And now there's a particular relationship there

  365. in terms of those that they represent,

  366. Adam being the head of the whole human race,

  367. apart from Jesus and his humanity,

  368. and Jesus being the head

  369. of all his redeemed people.

  370. And now that's important for the apostle

  371. as far as resurrection is concerned,

  372. and the resurrection in the future too,

  373. of God's people,

  374. how that also is taken account of

  375. in what he's saying.

  376. So we're going to confine ourselves

  377. to those particular aspects of the passage.

  378. Christ, the first fruits,

  379. and then Christ, the last Adam,

  380. as called elsewhere in Romans.

  381. So here is what he's saying,

  382. but in fact Christ has been raised from the dead.

  383. Now this is really a burst of triumphant positivity,

  384. you might call it,

  385. in light of following all that he's been saying before.

  386. He now comes to this where he's saying,

  387. but in fact,

  388. and the language is really stronger

  389. than is easy to convey in any translation of it.

  390. It's really Paul just bursting out positively

  391. and triumphantly in what he's saying,

  392. so that he's now saying,

  393. no longer if this is the case,

  394. then this is also the case,

  395. but he's now saying,

  396. this is in fact the case.

  397. This is the certainty of the matter.

  398. And all the arguments that follow on from that

  399. are actually based upon the reality

  400. of this being true,

  401. of this being factually true,

  402. of Christ having indeed been raised from the dead.

  403. Now we mentioned earlier

  404. in going through the earlier verses

  405. that this is important for us

  406. in terms of what our present life consists of

  407. and what sort of outlook we have in the present life

  408. and how we view things not only for our present life,

  409. but on into eternity itself.

  410. Because to deny the reality of this resurrection of Jesus

  411. and therefore to deny the reality of resurrection at all

  412. is really to extract the element of hope from human life.

  413. Now we often say this,

  414. that hope in the biblical sense,

  415. in the New Testament sense,

  416. and Old Testament too,

  417. hope in the biblical sense

  418. is much more than the kind of hoping for the best

  419. that we have in the ordinary sense in the course of life.

  420. We could hope for the best tomorrow.

  421. We could hope that something would really happen

  422. and that this would be a great thing

  423. if we could actually participate in something.

  424. We can hope that that would be the case,

  425. but we can't have any guarantee that it will.

  426. But this hope that the Bible speaks about,

  427. the hope that's connected inseparably with the resurrection of Christ,

  428. it's a certain hope.

  429. It's what Peter in his first epistle calls a living hope.

  430. It's a hope that will never be disappointed

  431. because it will always result in what God has promised of eternal life.

  432. And if you take away the resurrection of Jesus,

  433. you're leaving human life without this hope.

  434. There is no other place where you can find hope.

  435. And friends,

  436. when you look at the world in which we live,

  437. when you look at its grayness,

  438. when you look at its darkness,

  439. when you look at its hopelessness,

  440. when you look at the elements of despair

  441. and near despair in people's lives,

  442. we have to actually realize

  443. that that is because they don't have this hope.

  444. However positive people might be in their lives,

  445. it's a very different matter to have

  446. the positivity that Paul is speaking of here,

  447. the positivity of forward-looking

  448. in hope for the resurrection and to eternal life.

  449. A life that's not based on Jesus

  450. and on the resurrection of Jesus,

  451. on the risen Jesus,

  452. is a very sad life.

  453. It's a very hopeless life.

  454. Indeed, the Bible talks about it as a very dark life.

  455. We'll read Ephesians,

  456. a bit from Ephesians 2 later,

  457. but you remember how Ephesians 2 begins,

  458. you who were dead in trespasses and sins.

  459. Because when a human life is not connected

  460. vitally to Christ,

  461. there is no life spiritually in that life,

  462. in that person.

  463. And friends, tonight,

  464. as we look out over the world,

  465. this is surely the message

  466. the world needs to hear,

  467. the message the world needs to accept

  468. by the blessing of God,

  469. the message of hope,

  470. the message of the risen Christ,

  471. Christ risen from the dead,

  472. death being vanquished,

  473. death overcome,

  474. death defeated,

  475. death put beneath his feet.

  476. That's why we have a Bible.

  477. That's why we need the Bible.

  478. That's why we need the Bible

  479. not just preached to us,

  480. but witnessed to us

  481. in our lives in the world.

  482. That's why our testimony in the gospel

  483. is crucial to the world in which we live.

  484. That's why evangelism is so important.

  485. Because this is really holding out

  486. the message of life,

  487. the message of hope.

  488. And it's no accident

  489. that we find

  490. the three sessions

  491. that we look forward to

  492. in the congregation,

  493. where they,

  494. in turn,

  495. these three evenings

  496. are going to be dealing

  497. with the issue of hope.

  498. The resurrection of the life of Jesus,

  499. the resurrection of Jesus,

  500. the death of Jesus,

  501. the resurrection of Jesus,

  502. where you find that as hope.

  503. In one word,

  504. it's hope that describes

  505. all of that

  506. and the result of that

  507. for us as a people.

  508. And that's what the world needs.

  509. And that's why we would like to see

  510. you bringing others

  511. to these meetings as well,

  512. to hear about this hope,

  513. to learn about this Jesus,

  514. to learn about his life,

  515. his death on the cross,

  516. and his resurrection from the dead,

  517. the very basis of the hope

  518. that the Bible speaks about.

  519. But in fact, he says,

  520. Christ has been raised.

  521. He wants the Corinthians

  522. who have certain disputes

  523. or uncertainties about resurrection.

  524. As he says in verse 12,

  525. how can some of you say

  526. there is no resurrection of the dead

  527. if Christ is proclaimed

  528. as raised from the dead?

  529. Why are you saying,

  530. he's saying to them,

  531. why are you saying,

  532. why are you thinking

  533. there's no such thing as resurrection?

  534. Because if and then

  535. Christ has been raised.

  536. But now he's saying

  537. Christ has been raised.

  538. He wants them to take

  539. this tremendous truth,

  540. this great fact,

  541. into their consideration

  542. more and more

  543. and to live it out

  544. in their lives

  545. so that the risen Christ

  546. will be seen through them.

  547. And isn't that why we live?

  548. Isn't that what his church is about?

  549. Isn't that what

  550. bearing testimony to Jesus is about?

  551. Isn't that why

  552. he's made you a Christian?

  553. Isn't that why

  554. he's given you this hope?

  555. Not so that you'll keep it to yourself,

  556. but that you'll say

  557. to this world

  558. that's so devoid

  559. largely of hope,

  560. look, I can tell you

  561. where hope is found.

  562. I can speak of a hope

  563. that I've been given,

  564. that I haven't created,

  565. but that can be yours as well.

  566. Say that to the world.

  567. Bring that to the world.

  568. That's what

  569. the message of the gospel

  570. and the testimony

  571. of God's people is about.

  572. And he goes on to speak there

  573. about Jesus

  574. as the first fruits

  575. of those who have fallen asleep.

  576. What does he mean here

  577. by the first fruits

  578. of those who have fallen asleep?

  579. Well, we saw earlier

  580. in the chapter in verse 18,

  581. those who have fallen asleep,

  582. those who have fallen asleep

  583. in Christ have perished

  584. if there's no such thing

  585. as resurrection.

  586. We saw that that describes

  587. those who have passed on

  588. from this life,

  589. who've died,

  590. but whose bodies

  591. have been laid out

  592. in sleep, as it were.

  593. They themselves continue

  594. to live in their souls

  595. in eternity,

  596. but they are asleep

  597. as far as their bodies

  598. are concerned.

  599. They are awaiting

  600. the resurrection

  601. when Jesus comes.

  602. And what he's saying here,

  603. he has been raised

  604. the first fruits

  605. of those who have fallen asleep.

  606. Now, you need to go back

  607. to the Old Testament for this,

  608. to get an insight

  609. into the meaning

  610. of the words first fruits

  611. or this description

  612. of Jesus

  613. as the first fruits

  614. of those who have fallen asleep.

  615. I need to go especially

  616. to the likes of Leviticus

    Leviticus 23 chapter mention

  617. chapter 23

  618. and verse 10.

  619. And that short passage

  620. talks about

  621. when the harvest

  622. was brought in

  623. by the people of Israel

  624. having settled in Canaan,

  625. having come to enjoy

  626. the fruits,

  627. the harvest of the land.

  628. When the harvest

  629. was being taken in,

  630. they would take

  631. a sheaf of the harvest

  632. and bring it to the priests

  633. and that priest

  634. would wave it

  635. before the people.

  636. It was the first fruits

  637. of the harvest.

  638. And it was important

  639. as the first fruits

  640. of the harvest.

  641. Why did God

  642. actually

  643. command that this

  644. be done?

  645. What was this instruction

  646. about?

  647. Well, the first fruits,

  648. this first sheaf

  649. of the harvest

  650. is really

  651. the representation

  652. of the whole harvest

  653. and it's saying

  654. a number of things

  655. to the people of Israel.

  656. It's saying,

  657. first of all,

  658. that whole harvest

  659. actually belongs

  660. to God.

  661. But apart from this sheaf,

  662. He's given it to you

  663. to enjoy.

  664. And it was also saying

  665. to them,

  666. not only is that the case,

  667. but this first sheaf

  668. of the harvest

  669. is expressive

  670. of its quality

  671. because Canaan

  672. was a place

  673. of abundant produce,

  674. abundant growth.

  675. And when they were

  676. bringing in this

  677. first sheaf of the harvest

  678. and showing its quality,

  679. then the Lord

  680. was saying to them,

  681. this is the quality

  682. of the harvest.

  683. This is the first installment,

  684. but it tells you

  685. what the rest is like.

  686. And the third thing

  687. it said was that

  688. because this is

  689. the first fruits,

  690. now you're seeing

  691. with your own eyes

  692. in this sheaf

  693. what represents

  694. the whole harvest,

  695. the rest is then

  696. guaranteed to you.

  697. it's here

  698. in this sheaf

  699. the rest

  700. is going to follow

  701. in due time.

  702. And what Jesus is

  703. is the first fruits

  704. of those who have

  705. fallen asleep

  706. because Christ's

  707. own resurrection

  708. from the dead

  709. is itself

  710. the first fruits

  711. in the sense

  712. that all of God's

  713. redeemed people

  714. are bound up

  715. in His resurrection.

  716. He is the first fruits,

  717. really the first

  718. pledge of the whole harvest

  719. if you like.

  720. He is the first one

  721. risen from the dead.

  722. The rest are then

  723. going to follow.

  724. And because He has come

  725. to be raised

  726. from the dead,

  727. there's an assurance

  728. given by Him

  729. being the first fruits

  730. that the rest

  731. inevitably will follow.

  732. There is not

  733. a single person

  734. for whom Christ died

  735. that will be left out

  736. at the resurrection

  737. unto life.

  738. Why?

  739. Because they are in Christ.

  740. Because when He rose

  741. from the dead

  742. as the first fruits,

  743. God was saying,

  744. this is the first

  745. of my harvest

  746. of salvation.

  747. My own Son

  748. risen from the dead

  749. is a pledge

  750. that the remainder

  751. will in fact

  752. be taken in

  753. in due time.

  754. He is the first one.

  755. He has established

  756. that the rest

  757. will follow.

  758. But there's this too.

  759. just as it was

  760. with the ordinary harvest,

  761. so it is

  762. with the resurrection

  763. of Christ.

  764. And this is dealt

  765. with later on

  766. in the chapter.

  767. We're just anticipating

  768. it very briefly.

  769. The quality

  770. of Christ's resurrection,

  771. if we can put it

  772. that way,

  773. is the guarantee

  774. of the quality

  775. of the resurrection

  776. of His people.

  777. In other words,

  778. Christ has been raised

  779. to the other side

  780. of death completely.

  781. Death is behind Him.

  782. Nothing of that

  783. will ever enter

  784. into His experience again.

  785. He's at the right hand

  786. of God.

  787. He's in heaven.

  788. And as the first fruits

  789. of His own saved people,

  790. He is guaranteeing,

  791. look at my resurrection.

  792. Look at what's through

  793. about my resurrection

  794. from the dead.

  795. Look at what's through

  796. of my risen body.

  797. And that guarantees

  798. the quality of your own.

  799. There will be no more death.

  800. No more crying.

  801. No more sorrow.

  802. No more tears.

  803. No more temptations.

  804. Nothing of what we associated

  805. living bodily in this life.

  806. He is the first fruits.

  807. And He's the guarantee

  808. that the whole harvest

  809. is certainly going to follow.

  810. This is why Paul

  811. was so anxious

  812. to get to this point,

  813. this positive point

  814. in his exposition.

  815. In fact,

  816. Christ has been raised

  817. from the dead,

  818. the first fruits

  819. of those who have fallen asleep.

  820. You can tell in 1 Thessalonians 4

  821. that he deals with that as well.

  822. There were some in Thessalonica

  823. that were asking the question,

  824. well, what's happened

  825. to those believers

  826. that were with us

  827. and are no longer in this world?

  828. What's going to happen to them

  829. when Jesus returns?

  830. Will they be left out of

  831. that resurrection

  832. that will take place

  833. at His coming?

  834. And Paul is saying

  835. that of course they will.

  836. No, they certainly will not

  837. because they will participate

  838. through resurrection

  839. from the dead.

  840. They will participate

  841. as Christ returns

  842. in the overall resurrection

  843. of His own people

  844. who are asleep

  845. and who will be joined

  846. with those who are left

  847. living in the world

  848. to celebrate His return,

  849. to participate in His return,

  850. to be glorified at His return.

  851. Christ is indeed, He says,

  852. in fact,

  853. He has been raised

  854. from the dead,

  855. the first fruits of those

  856. who have fallen asleep.

  857. And then He comes to speak

  858. about Christ and Adam.

  859. For as by a man came death,

  860. by a man has come also

  861. the resurrection of the dead.

  862. For as in Adam all die,

  863. so also in Christ

  864. shall all be made alive.

  865. We'll confine it to that

  866. for the remainder

  867. of our study this evening.

  868. As by a man came death,

  869. well, obviously,

  870. that's Adam.

  871. The moment Adam sinned

  872. against God,

  873. he brought death

  874. not only on himself

  875. but on his posterity.

  876. As our catechism reminds us,

  877. on all his posterity

  878. who descended from him.

  879. There's a wonderful way

  880. in which the catechism

  881. describes this

  882. in Shorter Catechism 16.

  883. Did all mankind fall

  884. in Adam's first transgression?

  885. Then it says,

  886. the covenant being made

  887. with Adam,

  888. not only for himself

  889. but also for his posterity,

  890. all mankind descending from him

  891. by ordinary generation,

  892. that leaves out

  893. the humanity of Christ,

  894. by ordinary generation,

  895. sinned in him

  896. and fell with him

  897. in his first transgression.

  898. And that's from Romans 5.

  899. Romans 5 verse 12

    Romans 5:12

  900. says as follows.

  901. I'm going to flick through

  902. a number of passages

  903. from Paul's letters

  904. for the next few minutes.

  905. Romans 5 verse 12.

    Romans 5:12

  906. Therefore just as sin

  907. came into the world

  908. through one man

  909. and death through sin

  910. and so death spread

  911. to all men

  912. because all sinned.

  913. See what that's saying?

  914. It's not all have come

  915. to sin since Adam

  916. but all actually sinned

  917. in Adam.

  918. Because you see,

  919. Adam was set by God

  920. as the representative head

  921. of the human race

  922. so that whatever he did

  923. as he represented

  924. the whole human race

  925. would pass on

  926. to the human race.

  927. Either he would stand

  928. the test

  929. in the Garden of Eden

  930. and the whole human race

  931. would then come

  932. to be saved.

  933. Although,

  934. that of course

  935. isn't what happened

  936. and there are mysteries

  937. of course associated

  938. with this.

  939. But we know what happened

  940. was he disobeyed God

  941. and therefore

  942. when he fell

  943. and when he brought

  944. death on himself

  945. all those he represented

  946. he brought death

  947. upon as well.

  948. All sinned

  949. in Adam.

  950. You and I are taken

  951. as having sinned

  952. in him.

  953. And I know

  954. that's difficult

  955. for us

  956. both to understand

  957. and to accept

  958. but that's

  959. how the Bible

  960. teaches us

  961. our relation

  962. to Adam.

  963. That by a man

  964. came death.

  965. by a man

  966. also has come

  967. the resurrection

  968. of the dead

  969. he's saying.

  970. So in other words

  971. when you find

  972. Adam

  973. driven out

  974. of the Garden of Eden

  975. and he was

  976. driven out

  977. it wasn't a kind

  978. invitation

  979. or a gentle invitation

  980. that God said to him

  981. now look

  982. you've done something

  983. really drastic

  984. so I invite you

  985. now to leave

  986. and I'm going to

  987. close the gate

  988. behind you.

  989. He drove him out.

  990. The seriousness

  991. of what he had done

  992. we cannot appreciate

  993. we cannot estimate

  994. because we're now

  995. sinners

  996. and our mind

  997. is blinded

  998. to an extent

  999. to the seriousness

  1000. of sin

  1001. to the seriousness

  1002. of rebellion

  1003. against God

  1004. to the seriousness

  1005. of unrighteousness

  1006. and of living

  1007. contrary to the

  1008. will of God.

  1009. And so God

  1010. drove him out

  1011. of the Garden

  1012. along with Eve

1013. and he put a barrier

  1014. there

1015. so that he could not

  1016. return

  1017. to the Garden

  1018. of Eden.

  1019. Well there you see

  1020. is the human race

  1021. there is adamantous

  1022. posterity in him

  1023. and they're outside

  1024. of the Garden

  1025. of Eden now

  1026. they're no longer

  1027. within the confines

  1028. of life

  1029. they are now

  1030. in death

  1031. they're embroiled

  1032. in death

  1033. they're encased

  1034. in death

  1035. you know that

  1036. famous passage

  1037. in John 11

  1038. when Jesus came

  1039. to the tomb

  1040. of Lazarus

  1041. he groaned

  1042. within himself

  1043. because he knew

  1044. that that body

  1045. of Lazarus

  1046. in the tomb

  1047. was itself

  1048. emblematic

  1049. of what mankind

  1050. had done

  1051. to themselves

  1052. in Adam

  1053. all sinned

  1054. in Adam

  1055. and the result

  1056. of that

  1057. the wages of sin

  1058. is death

  1059. and when Jesus

  1060. came groaning

  1061. to the sepulcher

  1062. of Lazarus

  1063. he wasn't just

  1064. showing a sympathy

  1065. with Mary and Martha

  1066. because their brother

  1067. had died

  1068. there was certainly

  1069. that

  1070. but he was thinking

  1071. at the time

  1072. was death

  1073. and Lazarus

  1074. encased in death

  1075. he was

  1076. as it were

  1077. if we can

1078. put it in such words

  1079. he was saying

  1080. within himself

  1081. I created

  1082. human beings

  1083. to live forever

  1084. and this is what

  1085. they've come to

  1086. this is where

  1087. they are

  1088. they're encased

  1089. in death

  1090. by one man

  1091. death came

  1092. into the world

  1093. all sinned

  1094. in Adam

1095. but then he goes on

  1096. positively to say

  1097. that because

  1098. there's no way back

  1099. in Adam

  1100. or for ourselves

  1101. so also

  1102. by a man

  1103. has come

  1104. also

  1105. the resurrection

  1106. of the dead

  1107. now there's

  1108. quite a bit

  1109. of serious theology

  1110. involved in all

  1111. of this

  1112. when you think

  1113. of us being

  1114. in Adam

  1115. and the whole

  1116. human race

  1117. apart from Jesus

  1118. we said

  1119. the whole human

  1120. race coming

  1121. to be constituted

  1122. sinners

  1123. and in death

  1124. because of what Adam

  1125. did as a representative

  1126. head

  1127. now he's saying

  1128. all who are

  1129. in Christ

  1130. will also

  1131. participate

  1132. in his

  1133. resurrection

  1134. as all

  1135. humankind

  1136. participated

  1137. in Adam's

  1138. fall

  1139. Adam's sin

  1140. Adam's

  1141. condemnation

  1142. so all

  1143. who are

  1144. in Christ

  1145. not all

  1146. the human

  1147. race

  1148. but all

  1149. who are

  1150. in Christ

  1151. will participate

  1152. in Christ's

  1153. resurrection

  1154. in resurrection

  1155. where Christ

  1156. is foundational

  1157. to it

  1158. in his

  1159. own

  1160. resurrection

  1161. in other words

  1162. we're talking

  1163. about union

  1164. what the Bible

  1165. calls union

  1166. with Christ

  1167. just as we have

  1168. a union

  1169. with Adam

  1170. which led

  1171. to death

  1172. so we have

  1173. a union

  1174. all God's

  1175. people have

  1176. a union

  1177. with Jesus

  1178. with Christ

  1179. which leads

  1180. to life

  1181. through his

  1182. resurrection

  1183. as by man

  1184. came death

  1185. by a man

  1186. has come

  1187. also the

  1188. resurrection

  1189. of the dead

  1190. for as in Adam

  1191. all die

  1192. so also

  1193. all in Christ

  1194. shall be made

  1195. alive

  1196. I think is how

  1197. we have to

  1198. understand it

  1199. not all who

  1200. died in Adam

  1201. will come

  1202. to live

  1203. not all who

  1204. died in Adam

  1205. will come

  1206. to be in heaven

  1207. Bible makes

  1208. that clear

  1209. but all who

  1210. are in Christ

  1211. and this is a

  1212. great wide

  1213. subject

  1214. our union

  1215. with Christ

  1216. because way

  1217. back to our

  1218. being chosen

  1219. in Christ

  1220. in eternity

  1221. as Ephesians

  1222. 1 puts it

  1223. being joined

  1224. to him

  1225. as he comes

  1226. into the world

  1227. being in him

  1228. being in him

  1229. spiritually that is

  1230. as he dies

  1231. the death

  1232. of the cross

  1233. being in him

  1234. as he rose

  1235. from the dead

  1236. and there are

  1237. passages in Romans

  1238. and in Ephesians

  1239. that teach this

  1240. great fact

  1241. for us

  1242. Ephesians 2

  1243. for example

  1244. I know the time

  1245. is passing

  1246. but just let me

  1247. read this one

  1248. for you

  1249. Ephesians 2

    Ephesians 2:4–6

  1250. verses 4 to 6

  1251. having begun

  1252. by you being

  1253. dead in trespasses

  1254. and sins

  1255. but then he goes

  1256. on to say

  1257. but God

  1258. being rich

  1259. in mercy

  1260. because of

  1261. the great

  1262. love with

  1263. which he

  1264. loved us

  1265. even when

  1266. we were

  1267. dead in

  1268. our trespasses

  1269. he made

  1270. us alive

  1271. together

  1272. in union

  1273. with Christ

  1274. and raised

  1275. us up

  1276. with him

  1277. and seated

  1278. us with him

  1279. in the heavenly

  1280. places

  1281. in Christ

  1282. Jesus

  1283. now what is he

  1284. saying there

  1285. he's talking

  1286. and writing

  1287. to Ephesian

  1288. Christians

  1289. who are still

  1290. in this world

  1291. why is he saying

  1292. they've been

  1293. raised up

  1294. together with

  1295. Christ

  1296. in his

  1297. resurrection

  1298. why is he

  1299. saying they

  1300. have been

  1301. seated with

  1302. him in the

  1303. heavenly places

  1304. in Christ

  1305. because what

  1306. he's saying

  1307. is because

  1308. they are in

  1309. Christ to

  1310. begin with

  1311. spiritually in

  1312. Christ

  1313. spiritually in

  1314. Christ as

  1315. their

  1316. representative

  1317. therefore

  1318. whenever Christ

  1319. died

  1320. not only did

  1321. he die for

  1322. them

  1323. but there's a

  1324. sense in which

  1325. they are accounted

  1326. as having

  1327. died

  1328. the death

  1329. which he

  1330. died

  1331. the atoning

  1332. death for

  1333. sin

  1334. which he

  1335. died

  1336. and his

  1337. resurrection

  1338. from the

  1339. dead

  1340. because they

  1341. are in

  1342. him

  1343. they are

  1344. accounted

  1345. as if

  1346. they

  1347. had risen

  1348. from the

  1349. dead by

  1350. their own

  1351. strength

  1352. you see

  1353. that's

  1354. what the

  1355. Bible

  1356. teaches

  1357. with regard

  1358. to

  1359. substitution

  1360. you can't

  1361. keep

  1362. substitution

  1363. out of

  1364. the

  1365. picture

  1366. let me

  1367. just finish

  1368. the point

  1369. by saying

  1370. this

  1371. when you

  1372. think of

  1373. Jesus

  1374. on the

  1375. cross

  1376. and then

  1377. Jesus

  1378. being

  1379. raised

  1380. from the

  1381. dead

  1382. following

  1383. that

  1384. and think

  1385. of his

  1386. people

  1387. in him

  1388. well this

  1389. is how

  1390. it works

  1391. the

  1392. sin

  1393. of his

  1394. people

  1395. the sins

  1396. of his

  1397. people

  1398. having been

  1399. taken

  1400. by

  1401. Jesus

  1402. they are

  1403. accounted

  1404. as if

  1405. they were

  1406. his

  1407. from the

  1408. beginning

  1409. as if

  1410. he had

  1411. done

  1412. these

  1413. sins

  1414. himself

  1415. that is

  1416. why God

  1417. visited

  1418. him

  1419. with

  1420. his

  1421. wrath

  1422. he took

  1423. our

  1424. sins

  1425. he took

  1426. the sins

  1427. of his

  1428. people

  1429. God

  1430. viewed

  1431. him

  1432. as the

  1433. substitute

  1434. of his

  1435. people

  1436. as if

  1437. all of

  1438. these

  1439. sins

  1440. had been

  1441. committed

  1442. by

  1443. himself

  1444. but on

  1445. the other

  1446. side

  1447. of it

  1448. when he

  1449. rose

  1450. from the

  1451. dead

  1452. so that

  1453. resurrection

  1454. God

  1455. because his

  1456. people are

  1457. in him

  1458. they are

  1459. raised with

  1460. him

  1461. spiritually

  1462. they are

  1463. looked upon

  1464. by God

  1465. as if

  1466. they had

  1467. risen from

  1468. the dead

  1469. themselves

  1470. and there's

  1471. a wonderful

  1472. transaction

  1473. there

  1474. the sins

  1475. of his

  1476. people

  1477. are laid

  1478. upon

  1479. Jesus

  1480. they become

  1481. his own

  1482. he never

  1483. sinned

  1484. he never

  1485. could

  1486. but these

  1487. sins are

  1488. looked upon

  1489. as his

  1490. federally

  1491. representatively

  1492. substitutionary

  1493. and on the

  1494. other hand

  1495. the righteousness

  1496. that he has

  1497. accomplished

  1498. the righteousness

  1499. in fact

  1500. that he

  1501. is

  1502. by his

  1503. death and

  1504. resurrection

  1505. that is

  1506. accounted

  1507. the righteousness

  1508. of his

  1509. people

  1510. as if they

  1511. had created

  1512. it themselves

  1513. that's at the

  1514. heart of the

  1515. gospel

  1516. that's what

  1517. makes Jesus

  1518. such an

  1519. immense

  1520. figure

  1521. and why

  1522. union with

  1523. Jesus is so

  1524. important

  1525. why faith

  1526. in Christ

  1527. is so

  1528. crucial

  1529. so let's

  1530. ask

  1531. what use

  1532. is this

  1533. to us

  1534. now

  1535. surely this

  1536. is just

  1537. something

  1538. looking ahead

  1539. to the

  1540. resurrection

  1541. well it

  1542. is

  1543. it is the

  1544. resurrection

  1545. of the

  1546. body

  1547. that Paul

  1548. has in

  1549. mind

  1550. here in

  1551. 1 Corinthians

  1552. 15

  1553. especially

  1554. this resurrection

  1555. of the dead

  1556. anchored in the

  1557. resurrection of

  1558. Christ

  1559. a certainty

  1560. of that

  1561. bodily

  1562. resurrection

  1563. of Christ

  1564. is making

  1565. certain

  1566. the resurrection

  1567. of all God's

  1568. people

  1569. ultimately

  1570. but let me

  1571. just take you

  1572. back to Romans

  1573. briefly

  1574. Romans 6

  1575. and verses

  1576. 11 to 14

  1577. because here

  1578. is what Paul

  1579. is saying

  1580. with regard

  1581. to

  1582. again

  1583. to

  1584. with regard

  1585. to Christ

  1586. and his

  1587. people

  1588. Romans 6

  1589. and verses

  1590. 11 to 14

  1591. well let's

  1592. go from

  1593. verse 10

  1594. for the

  1595. death he

  1596. died

  1597. Jesus died

  1598. he died

  1599. to sin

  1600. once for

  1601. all

  1602. but the

  1603. life he

  1604. lives

  1605. he lives

  1606. to God

  1607. so you

  1608. also

  1609. must

  1610. consider

  1611. yourselves

  1612. dead to

  1613. sin

  1614. and alive

  1615. to God

  1616. in Christ

  1617. Jesus

  1618. he's talking

  1619. about them

  1620. presently

  1621. as they are

  1622. there and

  1623. then

  1624. not just

  1625. as they were

  1626. simply

  1627. in Christ

  1628. when he rose

  1629. from the dead

  1630. but as they

  1631. are now

  1632. as believers

  1633. in Christ

  1634. having accepted

  1635. this Christ

  1636. having received

  1637. this Christ

  1638. so what's

  1639. the outcome

  1640. of that

  1641. what are

  1642. the implications

  1643. of that

  1644. what are

  1645. the requirements

  1646. that follow

  1647. on from that

  1648. being in Christ

  1649. having Christ

  1650. as our Savior

  1651. now

  1652. being joined

  1653. to him

  1654. him in his

  1655. resurrection

  1656. well he says

  1657. let not sin

  1658. therefore

  1659. reign in your

  1660. mortal bodies

  1661. to make you

  1662. obey their

  1663. passions

  1664. do not

  1665. present

  1666. your members

  1667. to sin

  1668. as instruments

  1669. for unrighteousness

  1670. but present

  1671. yourselves to

  1672. God

  1673. as those

  1674. who have been

  1675. brought from

  1676. death to life

  1677. and your members

  1678. to God

  1679. as instruments

  1680. for righteousness

  1681. for sin

  1682. will have

  1683. no dominion

  1684. over you

  1685. for you

  1686. are not

  1687. under the

  1688. law

  1689. but under

  1690. grace

  1691. not going to

  1692. look it up

  1693. but you can

  1694. follow

  1695. Colossians chapter

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  1696. 3

  1697. as pretty much

  1698. the same

  1699. emphasis

  1700. if you read

  1701. that through

  1702. for yourselves

  1703. later

  1704. but what is it

  1705. saying

  1706. it's saying

  1707. that the

  1708. dynamic

  1709. of the

  1710. Christian

  1711. life

  1712. the dynamic

  1713. the energy

  1714. that enables

  1715. us through

  1716. the Holy

  1717. Spirit

  1718. to live

  1719. a God

  1720. pleasing

  1721. life

  1722. to live

  1723. a life

  1724. that in

  1725. this world

  1726. as itself

  1727. the life

  1728. that God

  1729. requires of

  1730. us

  1731. to live

  1732. that life

  1733. is by virtue

  1734. of the power

  1735. of Christ's

  1736. resurrection

  1737. that is what's

  1738. operating

  1739. through the

  1740. Holy Spirit

  1741. in every

  1742. Christian

  1743. in every

  1744. saved person

  1745. you see

  1746. that's why

  1747. you need to

  1748. know your

  1749. theology

  1750. there's a lot

  1751. of this

  1752. that I

  1753. know

  1754. is deep

  1755. a lot

  1756. of this

  1757. that really

  1758. passes my

  1759. own

  1760. understanding

  1761. and yet

  1762. I need to

  1763. preach from

  1764. these passages

  1765. as you know

  1766. but the

  1767. dynamic of

  1768. this Christian

  1769. life is

  1770. from your

  1771. union with

  1772. Christ

  1773. in his

  1774. death and

  1775. resurrection

  1776. and that

  1777. dynamic

  1778. that energy

  1779. that's in

  1780. your life

  1781. is exactly

  1782. the energy

  1783. that raised

  1784. Christ

  1785. from the

  1786. dead

  1787. and you

  1788. see that

  1789. in Paul's

  1790. own experience

  1791. when he

  1792. gave his

  1793. testimony

  1794. in

  1795. Philippians

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  1796. chapter 3

  1797. why did

  1798. he count

  1799. all things

  1800. but loss

  1801. why was he

  1802. pleased to

  1803. count everything

  1804. but loss

  1805. for the sake

  1806. of Christ

  1807. well he

  1808. says so

  1809. that I

  1810. might know

  1811. him

  1812. and the

  1813. power of

  1814. his resurrection

  1815. and fellowship

  1816. with his

  1817. sufferings

  1818. that if by

  1819. any means

  1820. I might

  1821. attain

  1822. unto the

  1823. resurrection

  1824. of the

  1825. dead

  1826. see isn't

  1827. it wonderful

  1828. Paul is

  1829. saying I

  1830. can count

  1831. all things

  1832. now but

  1833. loss

  1834. everything I

  1835. once saw

  1836. as gain

  1837. in my

  1838. life

  1839. I'm more

  1840. than happy

  1841. to just

  1842. let them

  1843. drop and

  1844. fall away

  1845. they're no

  1846. use to me

  1847. anymore for

  1848. righteousness

  1849. I have

  1850. Christ

  1851. that's all

  1852. I need

  1853. to be

  1854. right with

  1855. God

  1856. so that

  1857. I might

  1858. have

  1859. his

  1860. righteousness

  1861. that comes

  1862. by faith

  1863. in him

  1864. but so

  1865. that I

  1866. might

  1867. ultimately

  1868. attain

  1869. to the

  1870. resurrection

  1871. of the

  1872. dead

  1873. he's got

  1874. the power

  1875. of his

  1876. resurrection

  1877. working in

  1878. him now

  1879. he is being

  1880. brought by

  1881. that towards

  1882. the resurrection

  1883. from the

  1884. dead

  1885. that awaits

  1886. him when

  1887. that resurrection

  1888. takes place

  1889. and it's

  1890. all to do

  1891. with Jesus

  1892. if you are

  1893. joined to

  1894. Christ tonight

  1895. by faith

  1896. you are

  1897. joined to

  1898. his

  1899. resurrection

  1900. what a

  1901. blessing it

  1902. is to be

  1903. united to

  1904. Christ

  1905. what a

  1906. blessing it

  1907. is to

  1908. know the

  1909. power of

  1910. Christ's

  1911. resurrection

  1912. making you

  1913. first of

  1914. all into

  1915. what you

  1916. are as

  1917. alive in

  1918. Christ

  1919. having

  1920. brought you

  1921. from

  1922. spiritual

  1923. death

  1924. raised you

  1925. spiritually to

  1926. be joined

  1927. to Christ

  1928. what a

  1929. blessing you

  1930. have

  1931. now that's

  1932. what's true

  1933. of your

  1934. life

  1935. what

  1936. incalculable

  1937. loss

  1938. God

  1939. if it

  1940. should be

  1941. otherwise

  1942. with you

  1943. because

  1944. unless you're

  1945. joined

  1946. vitally to

  1947. Jesus

  1948. it doesn't

  1949. matter how

  1950. much you

  1951. know in

  1952. your head

  1953. of theology

  1954. it doesn't

  1955. matter what

  1956. standards of

  1957. attainment you

  1958. may have

  1959. academically or

  1960. otherwise

  1961. in this

  1962. life

  1963. you are

  1964. dead in

  1965. your

  1966. trespasses

  1967. and sins

  1968. that's the

  1969. reality

  1970. that God

  1971. tells us

  1972. about

  1973. but focus

  1974. on Christ

  1975. himself

  1976. as by a

  1977. man came

  1978. death

  1979. we all know

  1980. about that

  1981. that's where we

  1982. all are

  1983. coming into

  1984. the world

  1985. so also

  1986. by a

  1987. man has

  1988. come

  1989. the

  1990. resurrection

  1991. of the

  1992. dead

  1993. as in

  1994. Adam all

  1995. die

  1996. so also

  1997. in

  1998. Christ

  1999. shall all

  2000. who are

  2001. in Christ

  2002. be made

  2003. alive

  2004. now

  2005. which is

  2006. it

  2007. which is

  2008. it for

  2009. yourself

  2010. have you

  2011. come to

  2012. trust in

  2013. him

  2014. to the

  2015. extent

  2016. that you

  2017. now know

  2018. his power

  2019. in your

  2020. life

  2021. have you

  2022. given your

  2023. life over

  2024. to him

  2025. so that

  2026. it's now

  2027. governed by

  2028. the power

  2029. of his

  2030. resurrection

  2031. are you

  2032. trying to

  2033. deal with

  2034. sin in

  2035. your life

  2036. through

  2037. anything

  2038. other than

  2039. the power

  2040. of Christ's

  2041. resurrection

  2042. is your

  2043. hope towards

  2044. eternity

  2045. based on

  2046. anything

  2047. other than

  2048. this

  2049. Jesus

  2050. in his

  2051. resurrection

  2052. friends I

  2053. hope not

  2054. I hope it

  2055. for myself

  2056. I hope it

  2057. for yourselves

  2058. I hope that

  2059. this Jesus

  2060. is your

  2061. Jesus

  2062. that this

  2063. risen Jesus

  2064. is your

  2065. risen Jesus

  2066. I hope that

  2067. this hope

  2068. of eternal

  2069. life

  2070. is your

  2071. hope as

  2072. well

  2073. it's the

  2074. only hope

  2075. the Bible

  2076. knows of

  2077. as a

  2078. true

  2079. living

  2080. hope

  2081. let's

  2082. pray

  2083. Lord our

  2084. God our

  2085. Father in

  2086. heaven

  2087. we thank

  2088. you for

  2089. your word

  2090. we thank

  2091. you for all

  2092. that it

  2093. contains

  2094. for that

  2095. which we

  2096. can

  2097. understand

  2098. in a

  2099. measure

  2100. and for

  2101. that which

  2102. carries us

  2103. beyond our

  2104. understanding

  2105. and Lord as

  2106. we consider

  2107. these great

  2108. aspects of

  2109. the resurrection

  2110. of our Lord

  2111. from the dead

  2112. and the

  2113. resurrection

  2114. that awaits

  2115. his people

  2116. bodily

  2117. we bless you

  2118. for that

  2119. spiritual

  2120. resurrection

  2121. that has

  2122. taken place

  2123. in the

  2124. experience of

  2125. all who are

  2126. saved

  2127. and we bless

  2128. you tonight

  2129. Lord that

  2130. through the

  2131. gospel

  2132. this is still

  2133. proclaimed to

  2134. us as the

  2135. avenue to

  2136. life

  2137. bless us

  2138. we pray

  2139. as your

  2140. word again

  2141. touches our

  2142. lives

  2143. bless us

  2144. so that we

  2145. may respond

  2146. believingly

  2147. wholeheartedly

  2148. and honestly

  2149. and seriously

  2150. bless the

  2151. young people

  2152. here tonight

  2153. Lord

  2154. if you

  2155. spare them

  2156. they have

  2157. their whole

  2158. life ahead

  2159. of them

  2160. to serve

  2161. the Lord

  2162. we pray

  2163. that they

  2164. may know

  2165. you in

  2166. their young

  2167. days

  2168. make the

  2169. power of

  2170. your resurrection

  2171. live in

  2172. their lives

  2173. give them

  2174. Lord to

  2175. love you

  2176. as the

  2177. one who

  2178. has now

  2179. risen from

  2180. the dead

  2181. who is

  2182. alive forever

  2183. more

  2184. and who

  2185. invites us

  2186. to come

  2187. and place

  2188. our life

  2189. in his

  2190. hands

  2191. receive us

  2192. we pray

  2193. in Jesus

  2194. name

  2195. Amen

  2196. We're going

  2197. to conclude

  2198. singing

  2199. Psalm 93

  2200. Psalm 93

  2201. in the

  2202. Scottish

  2203. Psalter

  2204. on page

  2205. 123

  2206. We'll sing

  2207. to the tune

  2208. Argyle

  2209. we'll sing

  2210. the whole

  2211. psalm

  2212. the five

  2213. stanzas

  2214. a psalm

  2215. that celebrates

  2216. the power

  2217. and the

  2218. strength

  2219. of God

  2220. over all

  2221. the forces

  2222. in creation

  2223. and of course

  2224. that we know

  2225. includes the

  2226. power of death

  2227. itself

  2228. in the ways

  2229. in which the

  2230. psalm

  2231. while it doesn't

  2232. speak of death

  2233. as such

  2234. it's nevertheless

  2235. indicative

  2236. that that's

  2237. included in

  2238. all the powers

  2239. that God

  2240. has overcome

  2241. the Lord

  2242. the Lord is king

  2243. the Lord is king

  2244. his throne

  2245. endures

  2246. endures majestic

  2247. in its height

  2248. the Lord is robed

  2249. in majesty

  2250. and armed

  2251. with strength

  2252. and might

  2253. Psalm 93

  2254. on page

  2255. 123

  2256. to the tune

  2257. Argyle

  2258. the Lord

  2259. is king

  2260. the Lord

  2261. is king

  2262. his throne

  2263. endures

  2264. majesty

  2265. gave his

  2266. height

  2267. the Lord

  2268. is

  2269. bold

  2270. in majesty

  2271. and armed

  2272. with strength

  2273. and might

  2274. the world

  2275. is

  2276. his throne

  2277. is

  2278. firm

  2279. and sure

  2280. we could

  2281. it

  2282. have

  2283. not

  2284. be

  2285. your

  2286. glorious

  2287. song

  2288. and

  2289. you

  2290. are

  2291. gone

  2292. from

  2293. only

  2294. eternity

  2295. the

  2296. seas

  2297. o

  2298. lord

  2299. have

  2300. lifted

  2301. up

  2302. they

  2303. lifted

  2304. up

  2305. their

  2306. voice

  2307. that

  2308. seas

  2309. have

  2310. lifted

  2311. up

  2312. their

  2313. voice

  2314. that

  2315. lifted

  2316. up

  2317. their

  2318. ways

  2319. and

  2320. make

  2321. a

  2322. mighty

  2323. noise

  2324. Lord

  2325. and

  2326. own

  2327. the

  2328. highest

  2329. strong

  2330. for

  2331. powerful

  2332. is

  2333. he

  2334. and

  2335. thunder

  2336. of

  2337. the

  2338. ocean's

  2339. waves

  2340. are

  2341. makers

  2342. of

  2343. the

  2344. sea

  2345. and

  2346. thunder

  2347. of

  2348. the

  2349. ocean's

  2350. waves

  2351. are

  2352. makers

  2353. of

  2354. the

  2355. sea

  2356. the

  2357. sea

  2358. the

  2359. sea

  2360. you

  2361. your

  2362. royal

  2363. statues

  2364. are

  2365. sand

  2366. firm

  2367. and

  2368. changing

  2369. is

  2370. your

  2371. word

  2372. and

  2373. holiness

  2374. your

  2375. word

  2376. and

  2377. holiness

  2378. that

  2379. adores

  2380. your

  2381. hearts

  2382. all

  2383. endless

  2384. days

  2385. o

  2386. Lord

2387. can I say how uplifting and encouraging it is to see so many out this evening and so many young people as well.

2388. nothing gives me or callum or greater joy than to know that you are set your mind you're setting your mind on the gospel on the message of the gospel on the worship of God publicly as we have opportunity in this life.

2389. So let me just say how gratifying and comforting that is to me.

2390. Now may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you now and always. Amen.

2391. Let me up celebrating a happy cat

  2392. Thank you.
