  1. Thank you, James, for the warm welcome.

  2. Once again, it's lovely to be with you,

  3. to be back amongst old friends,

  4. and we pray that indeed we'll know God's blessing

  5. by his spirit over these days

  6. as we come around word and sacrament.

  7. Well, friends, we're going to begin

  8. by singing to God's praise.

  9. We're going to worship his name from Psalm 146.

  10. This is a Sing Sam's version on page 191.

  11. Psalm 146.

  12. We can read at the beginning of the psalm.

  13. Praise the Lord, my soul, O praise him.

  14. I'll extol him all my days.

  15. While I live to God, my saviour,

  16. from my heart I will sing praise.

  17. Do not put your trust in princes,

  18. mortal men who cannot save.

  19. All their plans will come to nothing

  20. when they perish in the grave.

  21. Then down to verse 9 and 10.

  22. He frustrates the wicked's purpose,

  23. so the Lord through endless days

  24. reigns to every generation.

  25. Praise your God, O Zion, praise.

  26. We'll stand to sing the whole psalm

  27. to the praise of God.

  28. Praise the Lord, my soul, O praise him.

  29. I'll extol him all my days.

  30. While I live to God, my saviour,

  31. from my heart I will sing praise.

  32. Do not put your trust in princes,

  33. or tell men who cannot save.

  34. All their plans will come to nothing

  35. when they perish in the grave.

  36. Blessed is the one who truly

  37. works for help to Jacob's call.

  38. Blessed is the one who places all his hope

  39. upon the Lord.

  40. He who made the earth and heaven

  41. and blesses with all their store.

  42. He who keeps his every promise

  43. who is faithful evermore.

  44. He delivers from oppression

  45. and releases the hungry's plight.

  46. He releases those in prison

  47. to the blind the Lord his side.

  48. Those who are bowed down he raises.

  49. God delights in righteousness.

  50. He protects and cares for strangers,

  51. widows and the fatherless.

  52. He frustrates the wicked purpose

  53. So the Lord through endless days

  54. Praise to every generation

  55. Praise your God, O Zion, praise.

  56. Praise your God, O Zion, praise.

  57. Amen.

  58. Let's join together and unite our hearts in prayer.

  59. Let us pray.

  60. Let us pray.

  61. Let us pray.

  62. Let us pray.

  63. Let us pray.

  64. Let us pray.

  65. Let us pray.

  66. Let us pray.

  67. Let us pray.

  68. Let us pray.

  69. Let us pray.

  70. Gracious and eternal God,

  71. King of kings and Lord of lords,

  72. the God of heaven and the God of earth,

  73. the one who inhabits eternity,

  74. we gather this evening out before you, O Lord,

  75. with that longing in our hearts

  76. to truly know what it is to worship.

  77. You are truly worthy of all praise

  78. and adoration of your name being high

  79. and lifted up.

  80. You are the one to whom we seek to sing praises

  81. and even exalt in our hearts.

  82. And yet we are so aware that even for this short time

  83. as we come together as a people,

  84. that without you we can do nothing.

  85. We are completely reliant upon you

  86. in all that we seek to do in terms of worship,

  87. worship, and in service.

  88. And in light of this, O Lord,

  89. we pray that you might be pleased

  90. to fulfill that promise to your people

  91. that where two or three gather in your name,

  92. you are there in their midst,

  93. that for all of us here,

  94. we could truly say that we come not in our own name,

  95. but in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  96. and that you would honor this

  97. by your Holy Spirit coming

  98. and applying this word to our hearts

  99. and our minds,

  100. so that all the more

  101. we might bow down before you.

  102. And as we reflect upon who you are

  103. and what we have from your hand day by day,

  104. we cannot but come and give thanks.

  105. You are the God who is supplying all of our needs

  106. according to your riches and glory,

  107. the one who gives unto us health and strength

  108. and daily food,

  109. the one who's lavishing upon us

  110. such an abundance of blessings day by day.

  111. Forgive us, we pray, O Lord,

  112. for the fact that we are so slow

  113. to return thanks to you,

  114. that all too often as a people

  115. we find ourselves taking from the hand of God,

  116. yet are so reluctant to give back.

  117. Forgive us, O Lord, for such,

  118. and grant unto us that true

  119. and that right spirit of thankfulness,

  120. not least for these spiritual blessings,

  121. the blessings of our soul,

  122. that for God so loved the world,

  123. he gave his only begotten Son,

  124. so that whosoever believes in him

  125. should not perish,

  126. but have everlasting life.

  127. What a wonder it is

  128. that we can lay hold of this promise by faith.

  129. What a wonder it is

  130. that when our health, our strength,

  131. and our daily food passes away as it will,

  132. that we can lay hold

  133. upon the eternal promises of Christ

  134. that are indeed yea and amen.

  135. And as we gather these days

  136. and as we seek to remember,

  137. we pray, O Lord,

  138. that our hearts and our minds

  139. might be taken to Calvary's hill,

  140. that we might be enabled

  141. to a fresh gaze upon

  142. the beauty of our Saviour,

  143. the one who was despised

  144. and rejected of men,

  145. a man of sorrow and acquainted with grief.

  146. There was no beauty in him

  147. that we should look upon him.

  148. But yet there is beauty there,

  149. inexpressible beauty,

  150. beauty that enables sinners

  151. such as us to cry out,

  152. He died for me.

  153. O Lord, we praise you then

  154. for the wonder of what it is

  155. to be brought into the royal household of faith

  156. with that spirit of adoption

  157. whereby we can cry out,

  158. Abba, Father.

  159. And if there are any here this evening hour

  160. who are yet to know what it is

  161. to take their place

  162. in the banqueting house of the Lord,

  163. who perhaps,

  164. as we once were ourselves,

  165. are strangers both to grace and to God,

  166. who know not their danger,

  167. who sense not their load,

  168. who are quite content

  169. going through the realms of time

  170. without a word of eternity.

  171. We pray, O Lord,

  172. that tonight and in the days that lie ahead,

  173. your Holy Spirit might be pleased

  174. to touch them at their point of need,

  175. taking them to that place of darkness

  176. to your own most marvellous light

  177. from death to life.

  178. And if there are any here this evening

  179. who do know you in their hearts

  180. and love you,

  181. but are yet to come

  182. and to profess your name

  183. for the first time,

  184. through perhaps fear of man

  185. or whatever reason

  186. they are perhaps following from a distance,

  187. we pray, O Lord,

  188. that you would impress upon them,

  189. even through the preaching

  190. of your word this evening,

  191. the blessing that follows obedience.

  192. We know in many ways

  193. that the easiest thing is to stay away.

  194. We know that all that we are called to do

  195. in the name of the Lord

  196. appears to be so difficult,

  197. a mountain set before us.

  198. But yet we know that these thoughts

  199. come not from yourself,

  200. but from the evil one

  201. who seeks to distract us

  202. and to destroy our peace

  203. and to lead us on a path

  204. that does not honour your name.

  205. And so help our dear friends here

  206. who perhaps have even been on the road

  207. for many a year,

  208. who are yet to come

  209. and to take this step of faith,

  210. to know in a very real way

  211. that they will not walk on water

  212. until they step out of that boat,

  213. keeping their eyes upon Jesus,

  214. the author and the finisher

  215. of their faith.

  216. And we thank you, Lord,

  217. that you do not call us

  218. to go it alone,

  219. that you give unto us

  220. that helping hand

  221. every step of the way.

  222. As for many of us here tonight,

  223. perhaps we are so acutely aware

  224. of the challenges

  225. that face us in this wilderness,

  226. but yet you've not promised

  227. an easy path for any of us,

  228. but what you have promised

  229. is that you will be with us,

  230. that your rod and your staff,

  231. that they will comfort us

  232. and lead us and guide us

  233. as we navigate our way

  234. through this scene of time.

  235. Be with us, dear congregation,

  236. we pray.

  237. We give thanks for them

  238. and their witness in this town.

  239. We pray for all their efforts

  240. to reach out

  241. with the glorious gospel

  242. of Jesus Christ

  243. in a world that in many ways

  244. is so dark

  245. and is so needful

  246. of the light of your gospel.

  247. We pray that you may give unto them

  248. that boldness to go out,

  249. not in their own strength,

  250. but in the strength

  251. of the one who cried out,

  252. it is finished,

  253. the one who promises to us

  254. that he will be with us,

  255. that he will honor those

  256. who honor them.

  257. We pray now that you will

  258. lead us in your truth,

  259. that you will open out hearts

  260. and our minds

  261. to incline your voice,

  262. to hear what you have

  263. to say to us this evening hour.

  264. To all we ask,

  265. we ask for the forgiveness

  266. of our many sins.

  267. In Jesus' name.

  268. Amen.

  269. Well, friends,

  270. we're going to sing once more

  271. to the praise of our Lord and Savior

  272. from Psalm 46,

  273. this time in the Scottish Psalter.

  274. Psalm 46.

  275. We can pick up our reading

  276. at verse 7 of the Psalm.

  277. The Lord of hosts upon our side

  278. doth constantly remain,

  279. the God of Jacob's our refuge

  280. us safely to maintain.

  281. Come and behold

  282. what wondrous works

  283. have by the Lord

  284. have by the Lord been wrought.

  285. Come see what desolations

  286. he on the earth

  287. hath brought.

  288. Down to verse 10.

  289. Be still and know

  290. that I am God

  291. among the heathen.

  292. I will be exalted.

  293. I on earth

  294. will be exalted.

  295. I will sing

  296. verses 7 to 10

  297. to the praise of God

  298. standing to sing

  299. the Lord of hosts

  300. upon our side.

  301. Amen.

  302. The Lord of hosts

  303. upon our side

  304. hath constantly

  305. hath lost me

  306. hath lost me

  307. hath lost me

  308. hath lost me

  309. hath lost me

  310. hath lost me

  311. hath lost me

  312. hath lost me

  313. hath lost me

  314. hath lost me

  315. hath lost me

  316. The evil desolation he on the earth hath thrown.

  317. Until the ends of all the earth, wars into peace he turns.

  318. The glory break, the spear he cut, in fire the child burns.

  319. Be still and know that I am gone, upon the hidden eye.

  320. Will be exalted, thy honour will be exalted high.

  321. Friends, we're going to turn now to read God's word together from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 22.

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  322. Luke, chapter 22.

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  323. We're going to read two sections of this chapter.

  324. Firstly, from verse 14 through to 34.

  325. And then we'll pick up our reading at verse 54 through to verse 62.

  326. So that's Luke 22, 14 to 34, and 54 to 62.

  327. Let us hear the word of God.

  328. And when the hour came, he reclined at a table, and the apostles with him.

  329. And he said to them, I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.

  330. For I tell you, I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.

  331. And he took a cup.

  332. And when he had given thanks, he said, take this and divide it among yourselves.

  333. For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.

  334. And he took bread.

  335. And when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying,

  336. This is my body, which is given for you.

  337. Do this in remembrance of me.

  338. And likewise the cup, after they had eaten, saying,

  339. This cup that is poured out for you is a new covenant in my blood.

  340. But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table.

  341. For the Son of Man goes as it has been determined.

  342. But woe to that man by whom he is betrayed.

  343. And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this.

  344. A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest.

  345. And he said to them,

  346. The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them,

  347. and those in authority over them are called benefactors.

  348. But not so with you.

  349. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest,

  350. and the leader as one who serves.

  351. For who is the greater, one who reclines at a table or one who serves?

  352. Yes, is it not the one who reclines at table?

  353. But I am among you as the one who serves.

  354. You are those who have stayed with me in my trials.

  355. And I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom,

  356. that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom,

  357. and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

  358. Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you,

  359. that he might sift you like wheat.

  360. But I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail,

  361. and when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.

  362. Peter said to him,

  363. Lord, I am ready to go with you, both to prison and to death.

  364. Jesus said, I tell you, Peter,

  365. the cock will not crow this day

  366. until you deny three times that you know me.

  367. Then on to verse 54.

  368. Then they seized him and led him away,

  369. that is Jesus, bringing him into the high priest's house.

  370. And Peter was following at a distance.

  371. And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard

  372. and sat down together, Peter sat down among them.

  373. Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light

  374. and looking closely at him, said,

  375. This man also was with him.

  376. But he denied it, saying,

  377. Woman, I do not know him.

  378. And a little later, someone else saw him and said,

  379. You also are one of them.

  380. But Peter said, Man, I am not.

  381. After an interval of about an hour,

  382. still another insisted, saying,

  383. Certainly this man also was with him,

  384. for he too is a Galilean.

  385. But Peter said, Man,

  386. I do not know what you are talking about.

  387. And immediately while he was still speaking,

  388. the cock crowed,

  389. and the Lord turned and looked at Peter.

  390. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord,

  391. how he had said to him,

  392. Before the cock crows today,

  393. you will deny me three times.

  394. And he went out and wept bitterly.

  395. And so on.

  396. Amen.

  397. We pray God's blessing on that portion of his own holy,

  398. inspired and inerrant word.

  399. Friends, before we come back to this passage,

  400. we're going to sing once more.

  401. This time from Psalm 9,

  402. again in the Sing Psalms,

  403. Psalm 9,

  404. 9a.

  405. We'll pick up our reading at verse 7.

  406. Psalm 9, verse 7.

    Psalms 9:7

  407. This is on page 9 of the psalm book.

  408. The Lord forever reigns on high.

  409. His throne for judgment stands.

  410. He'll judge the world in righteousness.

  411. With justice rule the lands.

  412. The Lord will be a hiding place for those who are oppressed.

  413. And he will be a strong defense for those who are distressed.

  414. We'll sing down to the end of the verse marked 11,

  415. to the praise of God,

  416. standing to sing,

  417. The Lord forever reigns on high.

  418. The Lord forever reigns on high.

  419. His throne for judgment stands.

  420. He'll judge the world in righteousness.

  421. He'll judge the world in righteousness.

  422. With justice rule the lands.

  423. The Lord will be a hiding place for those who are oppressed.

  424. And he will be a strong defense for those who are distressed.

  425. All those who know your name, O Lord,

  426. In you, there trust will place.

  427. For you do not abandon those.

  428. For you do not abandon those who are afflicted.

  429. Sing praises to the Lord who sits in Zion on his throne.

  430. Among the nations of the world proclaim what he has done.

  431. Well friends, for a short time, let's turn back together to the chapter that we read in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 22.

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  432. Luke, chapter 22.

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  433. If we were to take a text this evening, perhaps we could consider the words of verses 31 and 32.

  434. Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat.

  435. But I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail.

  436. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.

  437. Well friends, over the course of the weekend, what I'd like to do, or God willing, what I hope to do, is to lay before you something of that great plan of God's redemption.

  438. That is, after all, why we are here.

  439. What I'm going to do is ask for questions.

  440. Tonight we're going to think about why we are here this weekend.

  441. And we're going to focus our thoughts and answering this question upon the narrative that we have before us.

  442. Why are we here?

  443. God willing, tomorrow night, we're then going to answer the question, how has this been made possible?

  444. On Lord's Day morning, we'll think about what we've received as a result of that which has been made possible for us.

  445. And then God willing, on Lord's Day evening, we'll close by thinking about who this is for.

  446. Why, how, what, and who.

  447. Now I'm going to begin this evening by asking another question.

  448. And as we think about the answer to this question, we hopefully, by the end of the sermon,

  449. and we'll be able to answer the overarching question that we're considering, why are we here?

  450. And the question I have for you friends is this.

  451. Tonight, on Friday the 17th of February, 2023,

  452. how is your walk with the Lord?

  453. It's a searching question.

  454. It's a probing question.

  455. It's a question that causes us to stop and to think.

  456. And were we to go around this building this evening and ask individuals that very question,

  457. I dare say that we would have many different answers.

  458. Some of you would say, well, my walk isn't as it should be.

  459. It's not what I would like it to be.

  460. In fact, if I'm being honest, I feel like I'm following the Lord from afar,

  461. and I have been for a while.

  462. I present myself outwardly as following the Lord,

  463. but in my heart there's something not quite right.

  464. Perhaps others of you might say, well, I actually feel close to the Lord at the minute.

  465. I'm enjoying sweet fellowship with him in his word, in prayer with his people.

  466. I would say, yes, I am walking closely with the Lord.

  467. Yet if we're being entirely honest, all of us, myself included,

  468. those of us who are Christians here tonight,

  469. we can identify with both of these feelings and everything in between at one time or another,

  470. being close to the Lord or perhaps walking at a distance from him in our heart.

  471. But of course, and we'll see this tonight,

  472. there's nothing new under the sun.

  473. Because here we have our friend Peter.

  474. Here we have Peter who, in the space of a few hours,

  475. he thought in his own mind's eye that, yes, he was walking closely with the Lord.

  476. But then soon after, within a matter of hours,

  477. he shows that, in fact, he isn't.

  478. So tonight we're going to think about Peter and his denial of Christ under three headings.

  479. Firstly, we're going to think about Peter's confidence in himself.

  480. Secondly, we're going to think about how he is confronted by Satan.

  481. And then lastly, we're going to close by looking at that commitment

  482. that is shown to Peter by the Lord Jesus Christ.

  483. Confidence, confrontation, and commitment.

  484. And after having considered these three points,

  485. we should be able to answer the question,

  486. why are we here this weekend?

  487. So here we are in verse 31, 32.

  488. And we find ourselves in the upper room.

  489. This is, of course, the night before Jesus is crucified.

  490. And here he is spending time with his disciples.

  491. He's having fellowship with his disciples.

  492. He's breaking bread with his disciples in the form of the Lord's Supper.

  493. He's having a blessed time.

  494. But what do we notice, friends?

  495. We notice that no sooner has our blessed time of fellowship

  496. had with Jesus and his disciples that it's broken.

  497. It's broken.

  498. What we see here is that something comes in

  499. that seeks to destroy that blessing.

  500. The problem?

  501. Well, the problem is that very quickly after having had the Lord's Supper,

  502. the disciples, what they do is they forget.

  503. They take their eyes off Jesus.

  504. They neglect to remember exactly what they've just been doing

  505. and who they've been doing it with.

  506. And instead, their eyes are focused upon themselves.

  507. See, in verse 24, I have here.

  508. Yes, 24.

  509. A dispute also arose among them

  510. as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest.

  511. Isn't this just so like us?

  512. After a time of great blessing with God's people,

  513. around sacrament, around word,

  514. isn't it so like us just to be distracted,

  515. to be embroiled in disputes and discussions

  516. which in reality have no real importance?

  517. That's what we see here.

  518. And of course, this has consequences

  519. because when we're in that heady frame of mind,

  520. what we find, friends,

  521. and we know this knowing what human nature is like,

  522. when we've had a dispute over something,

  523. something we're intently focused on,

  524. what we find is that we have this confidence in ourselves,

  525. this assumed confidence,

  526. whether it's genuine or not is another thing,

  527. but we have this confidence.

  528. We're sure that we're right.

  529. We're sure that our point of view is the point of view

  530. as the disciples themselves were eager to find out

  531. who would be the greatest.

  532. Would it be me?

  533. And that's what we see with Peter

  534. because no sooner has this dispute taken place

  535. that Jesus announces the unthinkable to him.

  536. Simon, Simon.

  537. Just notice that.

  538. Simon, Simon.

  539. What's Jesus doing here?

  540. He's referring to Simon Peter by his old name.

  541. Jesus had given to him the name Peter.

  542. Now he's been referred to as his old name.

  543. Why?

  544. Because he was going to go back very soon to his old ways.

  545. And just look at how he says it.

  546. Simon, Simon.

  547. There's that tone of disappointment.

  548. That tone of a loving heavenly father

  549. speaking to a son,

  550. of a brother speaking to a brother.

  551. Simon, Simon.

  552. I don't want you to do this.

  553. Simon, Simon.

  554. Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you

  555. that he might sift you like wheat.

  556. And it goes on to say,

  557. I tell you, Peter,

  558. the rooster will not crow this day

  559. until you deny three times that you know me.

  560. I wonder, friend, tonight,

  561. if you were told that this very evening

  562. you would deny the Lord three times

  563. with cursing and with swearing.

  564. If I was to tell you that,

  565. what would your reaction be?

  566. Well, you would no doubt,

  567. and me with you,

  568. our natural reaction would be to say,

  569. never, never would I do such a thing to my Lord.

  570. Never would I deny my Savior,

  571. certainly not with cursing and with swearing.

  572. Peter certainly had that confidence.

  573. And in Matthew's account of what we have before us here,

  574. he responds by saying,

  575. even if I must die with you,

  576. I will not deny you.

  577. You've all heard the saying,

  578. never say never.

  579. And of course,

  580. as the Lord's people,

  581. as Christians,

  582. this is something that we continually need

  583. to take on board.

  584. You know,

  585. one of the most dangerous things

  586. for us to do,

  587. friends,

  588. as Christians,

  589. is to look upon others

  590. who have perhaps fallen into sin

  591. and to look upon them

  592. with disgust

  593. and with disdain

  594. and confidently saying out hearts,

  595. although we might not articulate it

  596. with our lips,

  597. saying out hearts,

  598. I would never do that.

  599. Whatever I would do,

  600. I would never do that.

  601. It's lethal.

  602. It's lethal because it shows

  603. that we've lost sight

  604. of who we really are by nature.

  605. It's lethal because this way of thinking,

  606. it overestimates our own strength

  607. and ability to resist sin.

  608. It's lethal.

  609. We see this with Peter

  610. because at its center,

  611. this way of thinking

  612. is one of the most ugliest sins of all.

  613. The sin of pride.

  614. And of course,

  615. as an aside,

  616. when we see our brothers

  617. or sisters falling into sin

  618. instead of looking down upon them

  619. from our ivory tower,

  620. what are we to do?

  621. We are to draw alongside them.

  622. We are to seek to restore them

  623. in that same spirit of restoration

  624. that has been granted to us

  625. as undeserving sinners

  626. by our Lord and our Savior.

  627. We forget, don't we,

  628. who we are in Christ

  629. and what he's done for us.

  630. And so,

  631. such unfounded confidence

  632. that here Peter has it

  633. only goes on to make him weaker.

  634. He who thinks he stands,

  635. take heed lest he falls.

  636. And that's what happens.

  637. His confidence leads him,

  638. and this brings us to our second point,

  639. to be confronted by Satan.

  640. Remember what Jesus said,

  641. Satan has desired to sift you as wheat.

  642. What a vivid and clear picture this is.

  643. When the wheat was harvested,

  644. the wheat and the chaff,

  645. they were shaken,

  646. they were tossed up into the air,

  647. and as it was being tossed up into the air,

  648. what would happen was

  649. that the wind would blow

  650. the chaff away

  651. and the wheat would be left,

  652. the good grain would be left.

  653. And that's what Satan's deciding

  654. to do with Peter.

  655. That's what he's deciding to do

  656. with all of us,

  657. if the truth be told.

  658. That's what he's deciding

  659. to do with Peter.

  660. He wants to violently shake him

  661. to see if really,

  662. really this faith

  663. that he professes to have

  664. is through.

  665. After all,

  666. look at the many times

  667. Peter has blundered.

  668. Look at the many times

  669. he's let the Lord down.

  670. He certainly doesn't look

  671. like one of the Lord's people.

  672. Let's shake him,

  673. let's sift him,

  674. let's get to the root of the matter

  675. and show him for who he really is.

  676. And so he confronts Peter.

  677. But what does he confront him with?

  678. Does he confront Peter

  679. with an obviously glaring sin

  680. that would instantly derail Peter,

  681. discredit Peter?

  682. Is that what he does?

  683. Leading Peter into this obvious,

  684. heinous sin?

  685. Is that what he does?

  686. No, it's not,

  687. because that's not how Satan operates.

  688. He's far more subtle

  689. and clever than that.

  690. What he does is this.

  691. The next day,

  692. when Jesus is being led away,

  693. we missed out some of the chapter,

  694. when he's being led away

  695. by those, of course,

  696. who are going to crucify him,

  697. he confronts Peter.

  698. Satan confronts Peter.

  699. What does he confront him with?

  700. Well, he confronts him

  701. with a temptation.

  702. What's the temptation?

  703. Well, it's such a subtle temptation,

  704. but one that I believe

  705. is so real to all of us,

  706. that temptation of comfort

  707. and of ease.

  708. You see, Peter had a choice.

  709. Here's his Lord and Savior

  710. being led away to be crucified.

  711. He has a choice.

  712. He can either boldly

  713. and publicly identify

  714. as a follower of Jesus,

  715. or he can remain in the shadows.

  716. He can go to the side.

  717. He can somehow show

  718. that he doesn't really know

  719. this man Jesus.

  720. Verse 54.

  721. Then they seized him

  722. and led him away,

  723. bringing him into

  724. the high priest's house.

  725. And what does Peter do?

  726. And Peter was following

  727. at a distance.

  728. That's the first temptation.

  729. The subtle temptation.

  730. Following at a distance.

  731. Having so been confronted

  732. with that temptation

  733. of comfort,

  734. of ease,

  735. of taking the easy way out,

  736. he does so.

  737. He follows Jesus at a distance.

  738. No doubt he's embarrassed

  739. or he's scared

  740. to identify

  741. with the Lord Jesus Christ

  742. because in doing so,

  743. he knows

  744. there will be repercussions.

  745. There was repercussions,

  746. but perhaps not in the way

  747. that he expected.

  748. Because in following Jesus

  749. from a distance,

  750. friends,

  751. he was putting himself

  752. in the perfect place

  753. to be confronted further

  754. by Satan.

  755. And that's again what happens.

  756. Because not only does Peter

  757. follow Jesus from a distance,

  758. but then he goes on further

  759. to identify

  760. with the enemies of God.

  761. Verse 55.

  762. And when they had kindled

  763. a fire in the middle

  764. of the courtyard

  765. and sat down together,

  766. Peter sat down among them.

  767. Then a servant girl,

  768. seeing him as he sat

  769. in the light

  770. and looking closely at him,

  771. said,

  772. This man also

  773. was with him.

  774. At this crucial,

  775. pivotal point

  776. in the life

  777. and the ministry

  778. of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  779. instead of actively

  780. being involved

  781. with what's going on,

  782. instead of spending time

  783. with the disciples,

  784. perhaps in prayer

  785. over the situation

  786. that was unfolding

  787. before their very eyes

  788. or fighting the cause

  789. of Christ,

  790. trying to be there

  791. for his Savior,

  792. instead,

  793. what do we see?

  794. we see Peter

  795. abdicating

  796. all responsibility

  797. and warming himself

  798. at the fire

  799. of the faithless.

  800. This was one

  801. who had been

  802. so confident

  803. and now compromised,

  804. weakened in his witness,

  805. so that having been

  806. confronted by that

  807. temptation

  808. of comfort

  809. and ease,

  810. by distancing himself

  811. from Jesus,

  812. things begin

  813. to snowball,

  814. to get out

  815. of all control.

  816. Verse 57,

  817. but he denied it,

  818. saying,

  819. Woman,

  820. I do not know him.

  821. I don't know this man,

  822. he's saying.

  823. And a little later,

  824. someone else saw him

  825. and said,

  826. You also are one of them,

  827. but Peter said,

  828. Man,

  829. I am not.

  830. And it's not even

  831. as if he regretted

  832. what he said

  833. and wished he hadn't

  834. said it.

  835. You know,

  836. sometimes we say things

  837. in the heat of the moment

  838. and we wince

  839. at the thought

  840. that we've just said it,

  841. we wished we hadn't said it,

  842. we wouldn't say it again.

  843. Well,

  844. we see that another hour

  845. goes past

  846. and what does Peter do?

  847. He goes on

  848. to deny

  849. his Savior

  850. again.

  851. Satan desired

  852. to sift

  853. Peter

  854. as wheat

  855. and Peter

  856. agreed.

  857. As it were,

  858. he signed

  859. on the dotted line.

  860. An important point

  861. for all of us

  862. to remember,

  863. it's

  864. so easy,

  865. I suppose,

  866. for us

  867. when we're confronted

  868. with the suggestions

  869. of Satan

  870. that

  871. we blame

  872. Satan,

  873. that we blame

  874. Satan

  875. for our sins.

  876. He made me do it.

  877. And of course,

  878. Satan does whisper

  879. in our ears,

  880. sometimes very loudly,

  881. sometimes very convincingly,

  882. sometimes even

  883. as an angel of light.

  884. So it's hard

  885. to discern

  886. if it's

  887. from the Lord

  888. or if it's

  889. from Satan himself.

  890. But at the end

  891. of the day,

  892. we cannot

  893. blame

  894. Satan

  895. for

  896. our

  897. own

  898. sin.

  899. So friends,

  900. what we

  901. have before us

  902. here is,

  903. is it not

  904. a

  905. heartbreaking

  906. scene?

  907. A scene

  908. that ought to

  909. lead all of us,

  910. myself included,

  911. to examine

  912. ourselves

  913. and to

  914. remind

  915. ourselves

  916. that the only

  917. confidence we

  918. can ever

  919. afford to

  920. have,

  921. it's not

  922. in ourselves,

  923. it's not

  924. in our own

  925. estimation

  926. of things

  927. in this world.

  928. The only

  929. confidence

  930. that we

  931. can ever

  932. or should

  933. ever have

  934. should be

  935. in the person

  936. and in the work

  937. of the Lord

  938. Jesus

  939. Christ.

  940. Maybe

  941. tonight

  942. you're sitting

  943. here or

  944. perhaps you're

  945. joining us

  946. online and

  947. and you're

  948. saying with a

  949. heavy heart,

  950. that's me.

  951. That's me.

  952. People around

  953. me don't

  954. know it,

  955. but that's

  956. me.

  957. You're

  958. talking to

  959. me.

  960. I see

  961. myself in

  962. this whole

  963. situation.

  964. Well,

  965. friends,

  966. if that is

  967. you tonight,

  968. dear

  969. struggling

  970. Christian

  971. friend,

  972. and I'm

  973. sure there

  974. are some

  975. of you

  976. here,

  977. that is

  978. the reality

  979. of what

  980. it is to

  981. be the

  982. Lord.

  983. We're

  984. not good

  985. at talking

  986. about that,

  987. are we?

  988. Building one

  989. another up,

  990. being there

  991. for one

  992. another,

  993. but yet

  994. it's so

  995. part and

  996. partial of

  997. what it

  998. is to

  999. be called

  1000. from

  1001. darkness

  1002. into

  1003. his

  1004. marvelous

  1005. light,

  1006. that we

  1007. are

  1008. warring

  1009. against

  1010. principalities

  1011. and powers

  1012. each and

  1013. every day.

  1014. and if

  1015. you are

  1016. in the

  1017. center of

  1018. that

  1019. warfare,

  1020. if you're

  1021. so aware

  1022. of it

  1023. and you're

  1024. succumbing

  1025. time and

  1026. time again

  1027. not to

  1028. make excuse

  1029. for sin,

  1030. we do not

  1031. make excuse

  1032. for sin,

  1033. we see the

  1034. result of

  1035. sin,

  1036. we see

  1037. where it

  1038. leads us

  1039. here,

  1040. and as

  1041. heartbreaking

  1042. as this

  1043. scene is,

  1044. we can't

  1045. leave it

  1046. there,

  1047. we can't

  1048. leave it

  1049. there because

  1050. we come

  1051. here tonight

  1052. around a

  1053. message of

  1054. hope,

  1055. and so

  1056. as

  1057. heartbreaking

  1058. as the

  1059. scene is

  1060. before us

  1061. here,

  1062. it's not

  1063. a hopeless

  1064. scene,

  1065. this brings

  1066. us to our

  1067. final point,

  1068. the

  1069. commitment,

  1070. the

  1071. commitment

  1072. shown by

  1073. the Lord

  1074. Jesus Christ

  1075. to a

  1076. weak and

  1077. weary

  1078. sinner,

  1079. Peter,

  1080. and to

  1081. a weak

  1082. and weary

  1083. sinner,

  1084. you,

  1085. and to a

  1086. weak and

  1087. weary

  1088. sinner,

  1089. me,

  1090. and as

  1091. we reflect

  1092. upon that

  1093. commitment,

  1094. we're led

  1095. to answer

  1096. that question,

  1097. why are

  1098. we here

  1099. this weekend?

  1100. Verse 31,

  1101. Simon,

  1102. Simon,

  1103. behold,

  1104. Satan

  1105. demanded

  1106. to have

  1107. you,

  1108. that he

  1109. might sift

  1110. you like

  1111. wheat,

  1112. but,

  1113. but,

  1114. aren't we

  1115. so thankful

  1116. for that

  1117. word,

  1118. but,

  1119. but,

  1120. I have

  1121. prayed for

  1122. you that

  1123. your faith

  1124. may not

  1125. fail,

  1126. because although

  1127. Satan desired

  1128. to sift

  1129. Peter as

  1130. wheat,

  1131. and Peter

  1132. said yes,

  1133. Jesus said

  1134. no,

  1135. just like

  1136. with Job,

  1137. the Lord

  1138. allowed

  1139. Satan to

  1140. go so

  1141. far with

  1142. Peter

  1143. in that

  1144. whole

  1145. rendezvous

  1146. that they

  1147. have here

  1148. at this

  1149. time,

  1150. but no

  1151. further,

  1152. no further,

  1153. Satan

  1154. might for a

  1155. time have

  1156. God

  1157. Peter's

  1158. service,

  1159. he might

  1160. for a time

  1161. have your

  1162. service,

  1163. but he

  1164. won't get

  1165. his soul,

  1166. he won't

  1167. get your

  1168. soul,

  1169. if you're

  1170. in Christ

  1171. tonight,

  1172. why?

  1173. Because

  1174. greater

  1175. is he

  1176. that is

  1177. in you,

  1178. than he

  1179. that is

  1180. in the

  1181. world,

  1182. and so

  1183. no matter

  1184. how low

  1185. we go,

  1186. and maybe

  1187. tonight you

  1188. are very

  1189. low,

  1190. I don't

  1191. know,

  1192. maybe you're

  1193. very low

  1194. in your

  1195. walk with

  1196. the Lord,

  1197. and at

  1198. times you

  1199. feel like

  1200. as it were

  1201. throwing the

  1202. towel,

  1203. and giving

  1204. up,

  1205. turning your

  1206. back on

  1207. the whole

  1208. thing,

  1209. it's just

  1210. too

  1211. difficult,

  1212. no matter

  1213. how low

  1214. you go,

  1215. you can

  1216. have

  1217. confidence

  1218. in the

  1219. one who

  1220. has committed

  1221. to you,

  1222. the one

  1223. who will

  1224. never leave

  1225. you,

  1226. never forsake

  1227. you,

  1228. the one

  1229. who died

  1230. on that

  1231. cross

  1232. for a

  1233. reason,

  1234. the Lord

  1235. Jesus

  1236. Christ,

  1237. and we

  1238. see that

  1239. commitment,

  1240. do we

  1241. not,

  1242. in this

  1243. very

  1244. statement,

  1245. I have

  1246. prayed for

  1247. you,

  1248. that your

  1249. faith

  1250. fail you

  1251. not,

  1252. and what's

  1253. wonderful

  1254. about this

  1255. statement

  1256. is that

  1257. it's said

  1258. before Peter

  1259. even fell,

  1260. before Peter

  1261. fell,

  1262. he prayed

  1263. for Peter

  1264. before Peter

  1265. sinned,

  1266. isn't that

  1267. something,

  1268. the Lord

  1269. is always

  1270. a step

  1271. ahead of

  1272. his

  1273. people,

  1274. does this

  1275. mean that

  1276. Jesus'

  1277. prayer wasn't

  1278. answered,

  1279. you might

  1280. say well

  1281. his faith

  1282. did fail

  1283. him,

  1284. did it

  1285. not,

  1286. look at

  1287. what he's

  1288. just done,

  1289. he's denied

  1290. the Lord

  1291. Jesus three

  1292. times,

  1293. and so

  1294. maybe,

  1295. maybe Jesus'

  1296. prayer wasn't

  1297. answered by

  1298. God the

  1299. Father,

  1300. of course

  1301. that's not

  1302. true,

  1303. we know

  1304. that's not

  1305. true,

  1306. Peter failed

  1307. himself

  1308. undoubtedly,

  1309. but his

  1310. faith never

  1311. failed,

  1312. because his

  1313. faith is in

  1314. the finished

  1315. work of the

  1316. Lord Jesus

  1317. Christ,

  1318. and that

  1319. can never

  1320. fail,

  1321. our faith

  1322. can flounder,

  1323. it can waver,

  1324. that is true,

  1325. but it can

  1326. never fail,

  1327. ultimately,

  1328. it can

  1329. never fail,

  1330. I have

  1331. prayed for

  1332. you,

  1333. that your

  1334. faith may

  1335. not fail,

  1336. why is he

  1337. praying,

  1338. why is this

  1339. intercessory

  1340. prayer necessary,

  1341. we might

  1342. ask,

  1343. was Peter's

  1344. sins not

  1345. going to be

  1346. defeated once

  1347. and for all

  1348. on the cross

  1349. on Calvary's

  1350. hill,

  1351. why pray at

  1352. all,

  1353. what's the

  1354. point of

  1355. this,

  1356. it's a

  1357. good question,

  1358. well one

  1359. commentator put

  1360. it like this,

  1361. this is not

  1362. a supplemental

  1363. work adding

  1364. to his

  1365. sacrifice of

  1366. himself on

  1367. the cross,

  1368. but rather

  1369. a consequential

  1370. work based

  1371. on it,

  1372. this is a

  1373. fruit of

  1374. the cross,

  1375. this prayer

  1376. is as a

  1377. result of

  1378. what's to

  1379. take place

  1380. on the

  1381. cross,

  1382. a prayer

  1383. that we

  1384. see also

  1385. in John

  1386. 17,

  1387. and this

  1388. is one of

  1389. the most

  1390. wonderful

  1391. chapters

  1392. whereby we

  1393. see the

  1394. care and

  1395. the commitment

  1396. that the

  1397. Lord Jesus

  1398. Christ has

  1399. for his

  1400. people.

  1401. I do not

  1402. ask for

  1403. these only,

  1404. but also for

  1405. those who

  1406. will believe

  1407. in me

  1408. through their

  1409. word,

  1410. this is a

  1411. high priestly

  1412. prayer,

  1413. that they

  1414. may all

  1415. be one,

  1416. just as

  1417. you Father

  1418. are in me,

  1419. and I

  1420. in you,

  1421. that they

  1422. also may

  1423. be in us,

  1424. so that

  1425. the world

  1426. may believe

  1427. that you

  1428. sent me.

  1429. In verse

  1430. 24,

  1431. Father, I

  1432. desire that

  1433. they also,

  1434. that's us

  1435. if it is

  1436. tonight,

  1437. Father, I

  1438. desire that

  1439. they also

  1440. whom you

  1441. have given

  1442. me may be

  1443. with me

  1444. where I

  1445. am to

  1446. see my

  1447. glory that

  1448. you have

  1449. given me

  1450. because you

  1451. loved me

  1452. before the

  1453. foundation

  1454. of the

  1455. world.

  1456. He

  1457. prays

  1458. because he

  1459. loves,

  1460. because he's

  1461. committed,

  1462. committed

  1463. to that

  1464. cause,

  1465. that cause

  1466. that had

  1467. been set

  1468. out from

  1469. all

  1470. eternity.

  1471. eternity.

  1472. And so

  1473. we can

  1474. put an

  1475. amen to

  1476. the

  1477. psalmist

  1478. when he

  1479. says,

  1480. my flesh

  1481. and heart

  1482. doth faint

  1483. and fail,

  1484. but God

  1485. doth fail

  1486. me

  1487. never.

  1488. And so

  1489. to answer

  1490. the overarching

  1491. question of

  1492. tonight,

  1493. why are we

  1494. here this

  1495. weekend?

  1496. Well,

  1497. friends,

  1498. we are here,

  1499. are we not,

  1500. to remember

  1501. and to

  1502. rejoice in

  1503. the glorious

  1504. reality of

  1505. what it is

  1506. to be safe

  1507. and secure

  1508. in Christ.

  1509. Not to

  1510. excuse our

  1511. sin,

  1512. far from

  1513. it,

  1514. but still

  1515. to remember

  1516. that we

  1517. are safe

  1518. and secure

  1519. in Jesus,

  1520. a glorious

  1521. reality that

  1522. we're not

  1523. to keep

  1524. to ourselves.

  1525. Jesus

  1526. says this

  1527. to Peter,

  1528. and when,

  1529. not if,

  1530. notice that

  1531. word when,

  1532. and when

  1533. you have

  1534. returned to

  1535. me.

  1536. He had his

  1537. eye on

  1538. Peter,

  1539. he knew

  1540. that Peter

  1541. would return

  1542. just as he

  1543. has his

  1544. eye on

  1545. any

  1546. wandering

  1547. lamb of

  1548. his.

  1549. When you

  1550. have returned

  1551. to me,

  1552. strengthen

  1553. your

  1554. brethren.

  1555. Strengthen

  1556. your

  1557. brethren.

  1558. Maybe this

  1559. is a

  1560. picture of

  1561. someone here

  1562. tonight,

  1563. I don't

  1564. know,

  1565. someone who

  1566. perhaps hasn't

  1567. been walking

  1568. closely with

  1569. the Lord

  1570. for some

  1571. time,

  1572. has

  1573. strayed,

  1574. someone perhaps

  1575. joining us

  1576. online,

  1577. I don't

  1578. know.

  1579. But what I

  1580. do know is

  1581. this,

  1582. is that you're

  1583. not to

  1584. stay away,

  1585. you're to

  1586. come back,

  1587. you're to

  1588. profess your

  1589. faith publicly

  1590. again.

  1591. He has

  1592. prayed that

  1593. your faith

  1594. will not

  1595. fail.

  1596. why don't

  1597. you come

  1598. back?

  1599. Come back

  1600. and strengthen

  1601. your

  1602. brethren.

  1603. We are

  1604. a family.

  1605. We are a

  1606. church family.

  1607. And as a

  1608. family, we

  1609. long, do we

  1610. not, and if we

  1611. don't, there's

  1612. something far

  1613. wrong, we

  1614. long, do we

  1615. not, to see a

  1616. long-lost family

  1617. member coming

  1618. back to the

  1619. table.

  1620. And when they

  1621. do, what do we

  1622. do?

  1623. we rejoice.

  1624. We praise

  1625. God.

  1626. We ourselves

  1627. are strengthened

  1628. in our

  1629. faith.

  1630. It does our

  1631. hearts good to

  1632. see those who

  1633. perhaps haven't

  1634. been with us

  1635. for many a

  1636. long year,

  1637. they're back

  1638. in their

  1639. rightful place.

  1640. Because Christ

  1641. has prayed for

  1642. them.

  1643. Their faith

  1644. will not

  1645. fail.

  1646. Maybe you're

  1647. here tonight

  1648. and you've

  1649. never professed

  1650. and you wonder

  1651. where you fit

  1652. into all of

  1653. this.

  1654. You might say,

  1655. well, how can I

  1656. return when I

  1657. never went away

  1658. in the first

  1659. place?

  1660. Well, you

  1661. did.

  1662. You did go

  1663. away.

  1664. Because we've

  1665. all got

  1666. that

  1667. image of

  1668. Christ

  1669. within us.

  1670. That's how

  1671. we've been

  1672. made, to

  1673. serve and

  1674. to worship.

  1675. And so for

  1676. every single

  1677. man and

  1678. woman, boy

  1679. and girl in

  1680. this world

  1681. who is not

  1682. in the way,

  1683. they've gone

  1684. astray.

  1685. They've chosen

  1686. to go away

  1687. from their

  1688. creator.

  1689. And so the

  1690. same plea

  1691. goes to you

  1692. tonight.

  1693. Come back.

  1694. Come back

  1695. to the

  1696. Lord.

  1697. Come back

  1698. to that

  1699. place whereby

  1700. you can come

  1701. to know not

  1702. just the

  1703. creation, but

  1704. the creator.

  1705. The one who

  1706. died on that

  1707. cross so

  1708. sinners like

  1709. us might

  1710. live.

  1711. Or maybe

  1712. tonight you

  1713. do know him

  1714. in your

  1715. heart.

  1716. Maybe you

  1717. are one of

  1718. the Lord's

  1719. people, but

  1720. still you

  1721. haven't

  1722. professed his

  1723. name.

  1724. I'll just

  1725. look at

  1726. Peter.

  1727. You might

  1728. think, well

  1729. I've got

  1730. plenty time.

  1731. I'll

  1732. profess in

  1733. my own

  1734. good time.

  1735. Just look

  1736. at Peter.

  1737. He

  1738. followed from

  1739. afar and

  1740. what happened?

  1741. He fell.

  1742. He followed

  1743. from afar and

  1744. he fell.

  1745. So dear

  1746. Christian friend,

  1747. if you

  1748. haven't

  1749. professed,

  1750. if you

  1751. follow from

  1752. afar, if

  1753. you're scared

  1754. of the

  1755. consequences

  1756. of coming

  1757. out on his

  1758. side and

  1759. for everyone

  1760. knowing that

  1761. you are a

  1762. child of

  1763. God, beware

  1764. because Satan

  1765. desires you

  1766. also.

  1767. Friend, we

  1768. know that the

  1769. blessing follows

  1770. obedience.

  1771. Not to say

  1772. that when we

  1773. come to the

  1774. Lord's table

  1775. somehow our

  1776. lives are

  1777. going to be

  1778. miraculously

  1779. smooth,

  1780. sailing,

  1781. plain sailing,

  1782. that is not

  1783. true.

  1784. But what is

  1785. true is this,

  1786. that when we

  1787. obey we

  1788. will have

  1789. that strength

  1790. that comes

  1791. from the

  1792. one who

  1793. tells us

  1794. that if we

  1795. come and

  1796. if we

  1797. profess his

  1798. name publicly

  1799. he will

  1800. honour them

  1801. who honour

  1802. him.

  1803. Does that

  1804. mean you'll

  1805. be perfect?

  1806. No it

  1807. doesn't.

  1808. Maybe that's

  1809. what you're

  1810. waiting for.

  1811. Maybe you

  1812. look at

  1813. yourself and

  1814. you think

  1815. well what

  1816. about this

  1817. sin in

  1818. my life

  1819. and what

  1820. about that?

  1821. And you're

  1822. waiting until

  1823. all of these

  1824. sins are

  1825. eradicated and

  1826. then you'll

  1827. come.

  1828. Well you'll

  1829. never come.

  1830. You'll never

  1831. come.

  1832. Peter was

  1833. far from

  1834. perfect,

  1835. you are

  1836. far from

  1837. perfect,

  1838. I am

  1839. far from

  1840. perfect but

  1841. still we can

  1842. profess the

  1843. one who

  1844. is perfect.

  1845. If we love

  1846. the Lord

  1847. that is our

  1848. calling tonight

  1849. hope to

  1850. come forward

  1851. and to

  1852. show to

  1853. all those

  1854. around us

  1855. that we

  1856. love the

  1857. one who

  1858. has interceded

  1859. on our

  1860. behalf,

  1861. the one

  1862. who tells

  1863. us that

  1864. our faith

  1865. will never

  1866. fail us.

  1867. I wonder

  1868. if you're

  1869. waiting.

  1870. Don't

  1871. wait.

  1872. there is

  1873. no perfect

  1874. time apart

  1875. from tonight

  1876. because today

  1877. friend is a

  1878. day of

  1879. obedience.

  1880. Let's

  1881. unite our

  1882. hearts in

  1883. prayer.

  1884. We come

  1885. oh Lord

  1886. and we

  1887. praise your

  1888. name that

  1889. you've given

  1890. unto us a

  1891. mirror in

  1892. your word

  1893. whereby we

  1894. can see

  1895. ourselves so

  1896. clearly.

  1897. but yet

  1898. often times

  1899. we neglect

  1900. to focus

  1901. on it.

  1902. We neglect

  1903. to look

  1904. into the

  1905. realities of

  1906. what we

  1907. see therein.

  1908. But yet

  1909. it is there

  1910. for us to

  1911. know that

  1912. indeed there

  1913. is nothing

  1914. new under

  1915. the sun

  1916. that you

  1917. are God

  1918. and that you

  1919. have prayed

  1920. that our

  1921. faith will

  1922. not fail

  1923. us.

  1924. We thank

  1925. you oh

  1926. Lord for

  1927. that anchor

  1928. for our

  1929. soul sure

  1930. and steadfast

  1931. that is to

  1932. be found

  1933. in you

  1934. and you

  1935. alone.

  1936. And so

  1937. help us

  1938. one and

  1939. all to

  1940. be strengthened

  1941. by this

  1942. as we go

  1943. forward

  1944. into this

  1945. weekend

  1946. as we

  1947. perhaps are

  1948. so aware

  1949. of our

  1950. unworthiness

  1951. to come

  1952. and sit

  1953. at your

  1954. table

  1955. that we

  1956. would have

  1957. one eye

  1958. at ourselves

  1959. that we

  1960. would have

  1961. our vision

  1962. set firmly

  1963. upon you

  1964. the one

  1965. who is

  1966. worthy

  1967. for worthy

  1968. is the

  1969. lamb

  1970. who takes

  1971. away the

  1972. sin

  1973. of the

  1974. world.

  1975. Go with us

  1976. then we

  1977. pray.

  1978. Forgive us

  1979. for Jesus

  1980. sake.

  1981. Amen.

  1982. Well we're

  1983. going to

  1984. conclude

  1985. friends

  1986. singing

  1987. together

  1988. from

  1989. Psalm 73

  1990. in the

  1991. Scottish

  1992. Psalter

  1993. reading

  1994. at

  1995. verse

  1996. 25

  1997. Whom have

  1998. I in

  1999. the heavens

  2000. high

  2001. but thee

  2002. O Lord

  2003. alone

  2004. and in

  2005. the earth

  2006. whom I

  2007. desire

  2008. besides

  2009. thee

  2010. there is

  2011. none

  2012. my flesh

  2013. and heart

  2014. doth faint

  2015. and fail

  2016. but God

  2017. doth fail

  2018. me never

  2019. for of my

  2020. heart

  2021. God is

  2022. a strength

  2023. and portion

  2024. forever

  2025. for lo

  2026. they that

  2027. are far

  2028. from thee

  2029. forever

  2030. perish

  2031. shall

  2032. them that

  2033. are whoring

  2034. from thee

  2035. go

  2036. thou hast

  2037. destroyed

  2038. all

  2039. but surely

  2040. it is good

  2041. for me

  2042. that I

  2043. draw near

  2044. to God

  2045. in God

  2046. I trust

  2047. that all

  2048. thy works

  2049. I may

  2050. declare

  2051. abroad

  2052. standing to

  2053. sing these

  2054. verses

  2055. to the

  2056. praise

  2057. of our

  2058. Lord

  2059. that SEMPEVE

  2060. Him

  2061. somewhere

  2062. ize

  2063. in the

  2064. heavens

  2065. heaven

  2066. up

  2067. but

  2068. the

  2069. O

  2070. Lord

  2071. alone

  2072. and

  2073. in the

  2074. earth

2075. whom I desire besides thee there is none.

2076. My flesh and heart, a kingdom here,

2077. but God will fail thee never.

2078. For, O my God, God is the strength

  2079. and portion forever.

2080. For, Lord, may that our power profit

  2081. forever perish thou,

2082. then that the warring wrongly go,

  2083. thou hast destroyed all.

2084. But surely it is good for me

2085. that I draw near to God.

  2086. Amen.

  2087. Amen.

  2088. Amen.

  2089. Amen.

  2090. Amen.

  2091. Amen.

  2092. Amen.

  2093. Amen.

  2094. Amen.

  2095. Amen.

  2096. Thank you.
