  1. Well, let's begin our worship this evening. We're singing in Psalm 106, Psalm 106 in the

  2. St. Psalms. That's from page 140, the tune is Ottawa.

  3. Praise the Lord, extol His goodness, for His love endures always. Who can tell His mighty actions

  4. or in full declare His praise? Blessed are those whose way is right, acting justly in His sight.

  5. We're singing down to the end of verse 13, Psalm 106. Praise the Lord, extol His goodness.

  6. Praise the Lord, extol His goodness.

  7. Praise the Lord, extol His goodness.

  8. Thank you.

  9. Thank you.

  10. Thank you.

  11. We have sinned just like our fathers. We have done what was not right.

  12. When our fathers wedded Egypt, they despised your peace of mind.

  13. All your mercies, they ignored, at the Red Sea's firm, the Lord.

  14. Yet for His men's sake, He saved them, and revealed His mighty hand.

  15. By His word, the seed-hearted led them through us all dry land.

  16. From the hand of the force set free, rescued from the enemy.

  17. Then in adversaries found there, not a single one survived.

  18. So the people sang His praises, and His promises believed.

  19. But His words made soon for God, and His counsel set an all.

  20. Let's now call upon the Lord in prayer.

  21. Let's join together in prayer.

  22. Almighty and gracious God, as we come and as we bow in Your presence in prayer,

  23. as we lift up our voices in praise to You, as we hear Your word, and as we give our mind to its teaching.

  24. O Lord, help us to believe all that Your word tells us about Yourself, about ourselves, about the world in which we live.

  25. Help us truly to relish in our hearts those things of salvation that it speaks about, and that it brings to us with Your own authority, and with that unerring authorship of Your Spirit.

  26. We give thanks, Lord, tonight that we come to worship You in a world that so largely ignores the importance of worshiping and acknowledging God.

  27. And we thank You for the testimony and the witness that this itself brings to the world.

  28. For, Lord, we think perhaps that few people see us as we come to gather in church, and yet we know that there are those who take note of our comings and goings from these places of worship.

  29. And we give thanks, O Lord, tonight for the opportunities that You give us to serve You and to testify to the world about You.

  30. And we pray that we may do this unashamedly, and in a way that would depend upon Your own blessing, so as to carry this further.

  31. We give thanks, O Lord, for all Your goodness to us.

  32. We come before You as a people who know that Your goodness to us has been displayed in so many ways over so many years.

  33. That You still continue to bless us.

  34. That You still continue to give us from Your Word that which encourages us.

  35. That You still continue to speak to us and to speak into our hearts.

  36. That You still continue at times to rebuke us, to bring us the reproof that Your Word itself contains.

  37. Help us, Lord, we pray, to receive all of these facets of Your truth in a way that would wholeheartedly acknowledge them as Your Word and as Your wisdom.

  38. And we pray tonight as we gather here, O Lord, and as we are joined online by those who join us in that way.

  39. Help us, we pray together, as we come to worship the Lord.

  40. Help us to look to You and to look to Your Spirit.

  41. We come, Lord, to use Your Word.

  42. We come to read Your Word and to hear its teaching.

  43. And we acknowledge, Lord, that we need the blessing of the author of the Word, Your Holy Spirit, whom You used to bring men of old, to bring these things together in these books that we have in our Bible.

  44. We thank You for the wonder, O Lord, that down through many centuries, so You caused these things to be written and caused them to be brought together so that we have them now as Your Word in its wholeness.

  45. We thank You for Your preservation of Your Word down through the years.

  46. We pray tonight that You would bless Your Word throughout the world in all the various languages into which Your Word has been translated.

  47. We pray that that work of translation will go on, that the work of Bible societies and other agencies that seek to bring Your Word before the world.

  48. Lord, we ask that they may be furthered in their attempts to bring Your Word into the public domain.

  49. And we pray that every agency that is true to Yourself and to Your Word, that they will know Your blessing and Your continued provision for them to bring Your Word before the world.

  50. And to translate it into the many languages that yet don't have a Bible in their own native tongue.

  51. And Lord, we ask Your blessing to be with all attempts to bring that about.

  52. We thank You for the way in which we gathered on Friday evening last to commemorate and to launch the new recordings of the New Testament.

  53. And we pray that these may be widely used when they become finally fully available to us.

  54. We pray especially that they may be of use in our children's education.

  55. And that they may prove to be valuable materials for the teaching of our young people, the things of God, the teaching of Your truth.

  56. And we ask that they may be a blessing to many in the years to come.

  57. And we pray, O Lord, that Your blessing will be with all Your people this evening.

  58. Once again, we remember fellow Christians in different parts of the world, very different to ours in their circumstances.

  59. But yet we give thanks that You are able to deal with them and bring them the help that they require.

  60. Lord, we thank You that we call upon a God who is the commander of the universe, who has Himself the infinite wisdom and ability to do for us far more abundantly, exceedingly, than we are able to ask or think.

  61. We thank You for the riches of Your grace, for the fullness, Lord, of Your blessing that You keep in store for those who fear You and love You.

  62. And we pray that out of that store this evening, there will be many who will come to be blessed and to be fed from Your truth.

  63. And remember, we pray, those who carry Your Word into different parts of the world and face difficulties and trials beyond what we ourselves can experience.

  64. We ask that You would bless those whom we know ourselves, O Lord, who serve You in this capacity.

  65. We pray that You would grant blessing to Marsalee Campbell as she goes forth shortly to Bolivia to begin help with a new work there.

  66. We ask, O Lord, that You would bless her and keep her and use her.

  67. We thank You for the news that she brought us of that work.

  68. And we pray that You would continue to uphold and strengthen her fault.

  69. And we pray for our own Muriel as well, as she anticipates going back to Cambodia.

  70. Lord, we pray that Your blessing will be with her in her preparations.

  71. We pray that You would grant to her, Lord, as she anticipates with a desire to go back to that work.

  72. And we pray that Your blessing will accompany her in that work itself.

  73. And that all that she does there will know Your continued hand upon her.

  74. And all that she meets with and all that she does, Lord, in Your name, that it will be pleased, O Lord, You will be pleased to grant Your blessing to this.

  75. Lord, we pray for our nation at this time, O Lord, when we find so much in our news about the impending election of a new leader for the SNP and potentially to be the first minister of Scotland.

  76. Lord, we pray that You would guide us as a people in that regard in our prayers, in our concerns, and especially those who have a direct hand in such an election.

  77. We pray for the parliament itself, and we pray that You would grant them wisdom, Lord, to make the right decision.

  78. We pray again for Kate Forbes.

  79. We thank You for her testimony, for the brightness of her witness, for her faithfulness to Your truth and to Your calling of her.

  80. We pray for her, for Your protection of her, for Your strengthening of her, for Your confirmation to her, O Lord.

  81. Not only that she is where You have called her to be, but that You are her God and that she is precious in Your sight.

  82. And we pray that as she seeks to withstand the many different assaults from many angles that have been directed against her in past days.

  83. Lord, make her strong, we pray, in the grace that is in Jesus Christ.

  84. And grant that to Thee witness that she is born and been witnessed to over the different types of media where that is brought to public notice.

  85. O Lord, we pray that that itself will prove to be a blessing and a means by which others will come to think deeply upon that position and relation to You throughout our land.

  86. And will be used by You as an instrument towards reaching into the hearts and minds of people who may be very unfamiliar with the gospel.

  87. And yet know integrity and honesty when they see it.

  88. And we pray, gracious one, for Your blessing to continue to be with her.

  89. Remember all others in our parliament, both here in Westminster as well, who are Your people and who serve You in the ways in which they do.

  90. Lord, we pray that You would keep them faithful.

  91. And we pray that their testimony publicly will be in accordance with Your truth, that You would grant them the grace, Lord, by which they will adhere to Your ways.

  92. And not be brought aside by the subtleties of false teaching, by the subtleties of political pressure or any other way in which they may have these temptations placed before them.

  93. And we ask, O Lord, for Your people in public life everywhere, locally here as well as elsewhere, that they may know Your continued blessing upon them.

  94. And we ask, Lord, in our own community here locally, where we find increasingly a distaste for the gospel,

  95. where we find, O Lord, so few and high prominence in public life locally that are prepared to come to know You and to follow You and to commend You and to commend Your ways,

  96. even to the point of resisting them.

  97. Lord, we ask in Your mercy that You would remember us as a people, that You would restore to us, Lord, a relish for Your Word, for Your day, for Your cause,

  98. for all the things that have prospered as in the past.

  99. And we commit all of this to You and seek Your blessing.

  100. Lord, help us to believe that when we pray to You for these things, that You are a God who hears us and answers our prayer.

  101. Help us not to be surprised or amazed when You show Your hand in those who stand for You publicly,

  102. and do so in a way that unashamedly confesses Christ.

  103. We thank You for Your upholding of us at all times.

  104. Bless now those who can't be with us this evening.

  105. We pray especially for those who are ill, for those in hospital, for those in our care homes.

  106. We pray again for those who have had death in their experience recently in their families.

  107. Bless all these families, we pray, and all who have still the wound of mourning and loss and sorrow in their lives,

  108. though it be many years since their loved ones passed away.

  109. Continue, we pray, to bless them and to comfort them.

  110. Receive our thanks now and pardon us and cleanse us from all our sin.

  111. We ask it in Jesus' name. Amen.

  112. Let's sing again to God's praise this time.

  113. It's in Psalm 119.

  114. That's in the Scottish Psalter version 119 from verse 129.

  115. Singing that section to 136.

  116. The tune this time is Ayrshire.

  117. Thy statutes, Lord, are wonderful.

  118. My soul them keeps with care.

  119. The entrance of Thy words gives light, makes wise who simple are.

  120. Readings and singings this evening are particularly focused on the Word of God

  121. and the importance of the Word of God to us in our lives privately and publicly.

  122. And so we're following the psalmist here as he expresses to God how precious his Word is to him

  123. as he lives out his life in the presence of those who may well be his enemies.

  124. So we'll sing the section, Thy Statutes, Lord, are wonderful.

  125. Thy Statutes, Lord, are wonderful.

  126. Thy soul and feet will hear.

  127. The angels of Thy Word desire.

  128. May twice decipher I.

  129. My mind, Thy heart, Thy open head,

  130. Have planted earnest me.

  131. While after Thy commandment,

  132. Thy love exceedingly.

  133. Look on me, Lord, and merciful to have and to be true.

  134. As Thy heart, O Lord, are wonderful.

  135. As Thy heart, O Lord, are wonderful.

  136. To do to those Thy name who truly are.

  137. O let my first steps in Thy Word arise,

  138. To your life shall order free.

  139. Let no iniquity of shame

  140. No lenient over me.

  141. From man's oppression save Thou need.

  142. So keep Thy laws, Thy will.

  143. Thy faith be gone,

  144. Thy servant shy.

  145. Teach me Thy statutes still.

  146. Teach me Thy statutes still.

  147. Rev'ers, O waters, call my night.

  148. They run down when I saw.

  149. Thy wicked men run on its day,

  150. And do not be thy law.

  151. Now let's turn to read God's Word.

  152. We'll find it tonight in the first letter of Kings.

  153. First book of Kings, rather.

  154. The first book of the Kings, chapter 22.

  155. And reading from the beginning.

  156. First Kings, chapter 22.

    1 Kings 22 chapter mention

  157. We'll read the passage down to verse 28.

  158. It's a lengthy passage, but there are important issues in it connected together.

  159. So we'll read these verses 1 to 28.

  160. For three years, Syria and Israel continued without war.

  161. But in the third year, Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, came down to the king of Israel.

  162. And the king of Israel said to his servants,

  163. Do you know that Ramoth Gilead belongs to us?

  164. And we keep quiet and do not take it out of the hand of the king of Syria.

  165. And he said to Jehoshaphat,

  166. Will you go with me to battle at Ramoth Gilead?

  167. And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel,

  168. I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.

  169. And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel,

  170. Enquire first for the word of the Lord.

  171. Then the king of Israel gathered all the prophets together,

  172. About four hundred men, and said to them,

  173. Shall I go to battle against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I refrain?

  174. And he said, Go up, for the Lord will give it into the hand of the king.

  175. But Jehoshaphat said,

  176. Is there not here another prophet of the Lord, of whom we may inquire?

  177. And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat,

  178. There is yet one man by whom we may inquire of the Lord,

  179. Micaiah the son of Imla, but I hate him.

  180. For he never prophesies good concerning me, but evil.

  181. And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.

  182. Then the king of Israel summoned an officer and said,

  183. Bring quickly Micaiah the son of Imla.

  184. Now the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah

  185. Were sitting on their thrones, arrayed in their robes,

  186. At the threshing floor at the entrance of the gate of Samaria.

  187. And all the prophets were prophesying before them.

  188. And Zedekiah the son of Hinnana made for himself horns of iron,

  189. And said, Thus says the Lord,

  190. With these you shall push the Syrians until they are destroyed.

  191. And all the prophets prophesied so, and said,

  192. Go up to Ramoth-Gilead and triumph.

  193. The Lord will give it into the hand of the king.

  194. And the messenger who went to summon Micaiah said to him,

  195. Behold the words of the prophets with one accord are favourable to the king.

  196. Let your word be like the word of one of them, and speak favourably.

  197. But Micaiah said, As the Lord lives, what the Lord says to me, that I will speak.

  198. And when he had come to the king, the king said to him,

  199. Micaiah, shall we go to Ramoth-Gilead to battle, or shall we refrain?

  200. And he answered him, Go up and triumph.

  201. The Lord will give it into the hand of the king.

  202. But the king said to him, How many times shall I make you swear that you speak to me

  203. Nothing but the truth in the name of the Lord?

  204. And he said, I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd.

  205. And the Lord said, These have no master.

  206. Let each return to his home in peace.

  207. And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat,

  208. Did I not tell you that he would not prophesy good concerning me but evil?

  209. And Micaiah said, Therefore hear the word of the Lord.

  210. I saw the Lord sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing beside him,

  211. And he died on his right hand and on his left.

  212. And the Lord said, Who will entice Ahab that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-Gilead?

  213. And one said one thing, and another said another.

  214. Then a spirit came forward and stood before the Lord, saying, I will entice him.

  215. And the Lord said to him, By what means?

  216. And he said, I will go out, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.

  217. And he said, You are to entice him, and you shall succeed.

  218. Go out and do so.

  219. Now therefore behold, the Lord has put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these your prophets.

  220. The Lord has declared disaster for you.

  221. Then Zedekiah the son of Hinnana came near, and struck Micaiah on the cheek, and said, How did the Spirit of the Lord go from me to speak to you?

  222. And Micaiah said, Behold, you shall see on that day when you go into an inner chamber to hide yourself.

  223. And the king of Israel said, Seize Micaiah, and take him back to Ammon the governor of the city, and to Joash the king's son.

  224. And say, Thus says the king, Put this fellow in prison, and feed him meager rations of bread and water, until I come in peace.

  225. And Micaiah said, If you return in peace, the Lord has not spoken by me.

  226. And he said, Hear, all you peoples.

  227. May the Lord bless to us that portion of his word.

  228. Let's sing again in Psalm 37 this time.

  229. Psalm 37, and that's on page 252.

  230. The tune this time is rest.

  231. We'll sing verses 1 to 7.

  232. Amen.

  233. For evildoers, fret thou not thyself unquietly.

  234. Now do thou envy bear to those that work in equity.

  235. For even like unto the grass soon be cut down shall they.

  236. And like the green and tender herb, they wither shall away.

  237. Set thou thy trust upon the Lord.

  238. And be thou doing good, and so thou in the land shalt dwell, and verily have food.

  239. We'll sing six stanzas to the end of the verse mark seven.

  240. For evildoers, fret thou not.

  241. For evildoers, fret thou not thyself unquietly.

  242. Nor do thou ever spread thou not thyself unquietly.

  243. Nor do thou envy bear to those that work in equity.

  244. For evildoers, fret thou not thyself unquietly.

  245. For evildoers, fret thou not thyself unquietly.

  246. For evildoers, fret thou not thyself unquietly.

  247. For evildoers, fret thou not thyself unquietly.

  248. Nor beindoers, fret thou not thyself unquietly.

  249. For evildoers, fret thou not thyself unquietly.

  250. For evildoers, fret thou not thyself unquietly.

  251. By the wobbles, fret thou not thyself unquietly.

  252. For evildoers, fret thou not thyself unquietly.

  253. For evildoers, fret thou not

  254. darn theirирÍs unquietly.

  255. 榮 whether oub Taste thy biennospietly.

  256. wither shall away.

  257. Set thou thy trust upon the Lord,

  258. and be thou doing good.

  259. And so thou in the land shalt dwell,

  260. and many have lain.

  261. Be like thyself, then God he'll give,

  262. thine heart's desire to lead.

  263. Thy way to God, go with interest,

  264. it bring to us shall be.

  265. And thy come to the light,

  266. he shall thy righteous death display.

  267. And he thy judgment shall bring forth,

  268. like noontide all the day.

  269. Rest in the Lord, not patiently,

  270. wait for him, do not pray.

  271. For they who cross drink in his way,

  272. such that sin sin shall be.

  273. Amen.

  274. Amen.

  275. Amen.

  276. Amen.

  277. Amen.

  278. Well, turn with me now, please,

  279. to 1 Kings chapter 22.

    1 Kings 22 chapter mention

  280. We're going to look at certain aspects of this passage.

  281. We can focus our mind on verse 8,

  282. and then see how other aspects of the chapter relate to that.

  283. So, 1 Kings 22, as we read in verse 8,

  284. And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat,

  285. There is yet one man by whom we may inquire of the Lord,

  286. Micaiah the son of Imla, but I hate him.

  287. For he never prophesies good concerning me, but evil.

  288. I'm taking a sidestep tonight from our series in 1 Corinthians 15.

  289. It's really in relation to the things that have been happening in our own nation over the last week or so.

  290. Just to look at these things, hopefully, in the light of this passage,

  291. in the light of Scripture,

  292. and to let the Word of God shine upon these events,

  293. which I think is always wise for us and good for us to do.

  294. We'll come back to 1 Corinthians 15, God willing,

  295. next time we come together in the evening.

  296. Well, this was an alliance doomed to failure, wasn't it?

  297. This was never going to work,

  298. because here is an alliance between the king of Judah, Jehoshaphat,

  299. a good man with some failures, as we all have,

  300. a man who was by and large obedient to God and serving of God,

  301. but yet here made a very near fatal mistake for himself.

  302. He very nearly got killed as a result, if you read down to the end of the chapter.

  303. And here he is himself coming to ally himself

  304. with one of the worst kings ever in the history of Israel.

  305. At this time, the two nations, Judah and Israel, are often at war.

  306. But here is the king Ahab,

  307. and you notice in, go back just to chapter 21 and verse 25,

  308. you find a description there of Ahab in a summary fashion.

  309. There was none like Ahab who sold himself to do evil in the sight of the Lord,

  310. whom Jezebel, his wife, incited.

  311. He acted very abominably in going after idols,

  312. as the Amorites had done,

  313. whom the Lord cast out before the people of Israel.

  314. Here was a wicked man, an evil man,

  315. a man who was opposed to God,

  316. a man who was opposed to God's people,

  317. a king who hated God,

  318. who hated the truth as God gave it to him

  319. whenever he heard it through faithful prophets,

  320. which was seldom.

  321. Although, of course, we remember Elijah

  322. as well at this particular time in history.

  323. Well, this was an alliance

  324. that really was bound

  325. to failure from the very start.

  326. Because what's happening here is that

  327. Jehoshaphat is really putting his politics

  328. above his piety.

  329. He's putting his political situation

  330. before his own faithfulness to God.

  331. Not the first time it happened.

  332. Certainly wasn't the last time it happened,

  333. and it still happens.

  334. Putting his politics

  335. before his piety.

  336. Putting his own political career

  337. before his relationship to God

  338. and to the truth of God.

  339. And that's what you find

  340. happening in our own land as well.

  341. But there are, of course,

  342. exceptions, very prominently.

  343. The exception of Kate Forbes at this time.

  344. I don't want to focus too much on her at all,

  345. but nevertheless, it's important

  346. that we see what's taking place

  347. and give our support to those

  348. who are standing for God's cause.

  349. And one of the reasons we admire Kate Forbes

  350. is by the grace of God.

  351. She's come to say, for example,

  352. she said when she was questioned

  353. about her view of same-sex marriage,

  354. her view of other issues

  355. in that ethical sphere,

  356. and she said,

  357. politics will pass.

  358. Politics will pass.

  359. I was a human being

  360. before I was a politician.

  361. And she meant by that, I think,

  362. that whenever her political career is over,

  363. it's not going to change anything

  364. in terms of her relationship with God.

  365. Politics will pass.

  366. And whatever political persuasion we're of,

  367. that's going to be the case.

  368. We're never to put our politics

  369. above our piety,

  370. above our principles,

  371. above our relationship with God.

  372. And it's important in all ages

  373. and for all age groups

  374. that our personal morality

  375. is the morality of the Bible.

  376. I say to the young folks here tonight,

  377. you're ethical,

  378. you're moral standing,

  379. you're the quality of your life

  380. as you want to live it out

  381. and as you're growing up in the world.

  382. Make sure that it's the morality of the Bible.

  383. Don't be taken in by

  384. the kind of stuff you're listening to these days

  385. that you hear so often,

  386. that the Bible is completely irrelevant

  387. and outmoded

  388. and old-fashioned for these days,

  389. for 2023.

  390. The Bible has always been

  391. directly relevant

  392. for every age of the world,

  393. and it will be so to the end of the world.

  394. And so, that's why we're saying to you,

  395. young people,

  396. that the Bible continues to be so

  397. centrally and foundationally

  398. important to your life.

  399. And if you give in to

  400. the kind of pressure that you get,

  401. maybe from some of your own age group,

  402. it's not going to be a good thing for yourself

  403. or for the age group that you live in.

  404. God has given you the advantage

  405. of being brought up in the church,

  406. in a church that believes the Bible,

  407. a church that values the Bible,

  408. a church that holds out the Bible

  409. as the Word of God.

  410. And it's an appeal to you all tonight,

  411. as we do at all times.

  412. Please take the Bible seriously.

  413. Please have the Bible

  414. as the foundation of your life

  415. morally and spiritually,

  416. because that's really what this passage

  417. is telling us about.

  418. Micaiah, as we'll see,

  419. he was not prepared

  420. to turn aside from his obedience to God

  421. despite the pressures

  422. that were brought to bear upon him.

  423. So, we're looking at two things.

  424. First of all, we're looking at

  425. Ahab and his advisors.

  426. He had 400 of them,

  427. at least 400 prophets,

  428. Ahab and his advisors.

  429. And then secondly,

  430. we're looking at Micaiah and his God.

  431. Because it comes across in this passage

  432. as somebody who's standing on his own

  433. against Ahab and his advisors,

  434. and yet Micaiah has God on his side.

  435. And as one of the Reformers once said,

  436. if you have God on your side,

  437. you're always in the majority,

  438. however many people are against you.

  439. The important thing is to have God

  440. as your support and on your side.

  441. That's what Micaiah really is

  442. in the chapter before us.

  443. He's a man who's standing

  444. very much on his own

  445. against the pressures

  446. of Ahab and his advisors,

  447. yet he continues to speak the truth

  448. as he knows it from God.

  449. So, Ahab and his advisors,

  450. you see what's happening here,

  451. the context is given us

  452. as we look at Ahab and his advisors.

  453. Verses 1 to 6,

  454. and there's verse 3.

  455. The king of Israel said to his servants,

  456. Do you know that Ramoth Gilead belongs to me,

  457. to us, and we keep quiet

  458. and do not take it out of the hand

  459. of the king of Assyria?

  460. He said to Jehovah,

  461. Will you go with me to battle at Ramoth Gilead?

  462. In other words, he's saying,

  463. This land, this particular area of Syria,

  464. Ramoth Gilead,

  465. actually belongs to us.

  466. And I want to take it back into our possession.

  467. So will you join me in trying to do that?

  468. Will you go with me to battle there,

  469. to get this back under our control?

  470. There's very much aspects of that

  471. that remind you of what's happening in Ukraine,

  472. what's happening with Putin.

  473. He's been a kind of an Old Testament,

  474. Putin at that stage.

  475. He wants this territory for himself,

  476. and he wants others to join with him

  477. as far as possible

  478. to bring it back under his control.

  479. And that's why he's asking the king of Judah,

  480. Jehoshaphat,

  481. Will you join me in this?

  482. Will you come to join me?

  483. If you go to the equivalent passage

  484. in 2 Chronicles chapter 18,

    2 Chronicles 18 chapter mention

  485. it uses an interesting word

  486. that the king, Jehoshaphat,

  487. was induced or enticed

  488. into this relationship,

  489. into this alliance.

  490. And that's an important word.

  491. He was taken in.

  492. He was taken aside.

  493. And that passage in 2 Chronicles 18

  494. tells us that Ahab put on a great show.

  495. He made a great party.

  496. He really entertained Jehoshaphat,

  497. and he fell for it.

  498. He fell into the trap.

  499. And so Ahab here calls his 400 prophets

  500. because Jehoshaphat in verse 8 there,

  501. Jehoshaphat is a little bit uneasy

  502. about just going along with Ahab's word.

  503. He's saying,

  504. well, first of all,

  505. let's inquire for the Lord.

  506. Let's get a word from the Lord

  507. just to make this sure.

  508. I'd like to know what the Lord thinks about this.

  509. And of course, in those days,

  510. that was largely through prophets.

  511. So Ahab called his prophets.

  512. He gathered together the prophets,

  513. about 400 men,

  514. and he said to them,

  515. shall I go to battle against Ramoth Gilead

  516. or shall I refrain?

  517. And they said,

  518. go up,

  519. for the Lord will give it

  520. into the hand of the king.

  521. He had an instant response

  522. on the part of the prophets.

  523. They say, yes, do this.

  524. Come on, go up.

  525. Of course you're going to win.

  526. You're going to take it back.

  527. The problem for Ahab is

  528. his prophets are false prophets.

  529. His prophets don't know the Lord.

  530. His prophets are prophets

  531. that tell the king

  532. what he wants to hear.

  533. They're in his employ.

  534. They're in his payment.

  535. They actually are concerned

  536. only to give out something

  537. that will gratify the king.

  538. Whether they're afraid of him or not,

  539. we don't know.

  540. But that's what they're there for,

  541. the 400 of them.

  542. They're all concerted together,

  543. and all they want to do

  544. is please Ahab.

  545. And they just give him things

  546. which they know he wants to hear.

  547. It's not new there either,

  548. is there?

  549. Nothing new there either.

  550. That's the situation

  551. as it's described there.

  552. They are false prophets.

  553. Now you know that

  554. throughout the Old Testament

  555. and indeed into the New Testament,

  556. you have this constant tension

  557. between the false prophets

  558. and the true prophets of the Lord

  559. or the true apostles of the Lord.

  560. And when you go to

  561. the book of Jeremiah, for example,

  562. more than any other book in the Bible,

  563. I think he speaks about

  564. the false prophets.

  565. And the false prophets

  566. are saying to the people

  567. of Jeremiah's day,

  568. peace, peace.

  569. Listen to what we're saying.

  570. This is what the guarantee of peace is.

  571. Never mind the likes of Jeremiah.

  572. Never mind this man

  573. that's so attached

  574. to the word of the Lord.

  575. We'll give you our opinion,

  576. and our opinion is the one

  577. you need to really take.

  578. If you really are serious about peace,

  579. listen to what we're saying.

  580. Of course, Jeremiah knew.

  581. They were talking falsehood.

  582. They didn't know the mind of the Lord.

  583. And so,

  584. these 400 prophets,

  585. here they are,

  586. they come to Ahab

  587. and they say to him,

  588. go up.

  589. You're going to be successful.

  590. Why should you hold back?

  591. Just do it.

  592. But,

  593. Jehoshaphat's still not

  594. very easy in his mind,

  595. is he?

  596. Because he says,

  597. is there not

  598. another prophet,

  599. someone else here,

  600. a prophet of the Lord,

  601. of whom we may inquire?

  602. He knows

  603. the kind of man

  604. that Ahab is,

  605. and yet he's still

  606. prepared to go into

  607. an alliance with him.

  608. And so,

  609. he comes and says,

  610. is there anybody else here

  611. that can give us

  612. the word of the Lord

  613. just to offset it

  614. against these 400?

  615. And of course,

  616. Ahab comes and says,

  617. yes,

  618. there is.

  619. There is one man here

  620. by whom we may inquire,

  621. Micaiah,

  622. the son of Imlah,

  623. but I hate him,

  624. for he never prophesies

  625. good concerning me,

  626. only evil.

  627. And you see,

  628. what's happening

  629. in Ahab's mind

  630. is that he's really,

  631. he's putting truth

  632. and error

  633. the wrong way around.

  634. What he's actually doing

  635. is for Ahab,

  636. as you find him here

  637. speaking about

  638. this Micaiah,

  639. he doesn't like Micaiah

  640. because Micaiah

  641. always speaks to him

  642. in the name of the Lord,

  643. the truth of the Lord.

  644. And Ahab hates the truth.

  645. The last thing Ahab wants

  646. is the truth of God.

  647. It's fine on the surface

  648. saying,

  649. yes,

  650. I want to know the Lord

  651. and His will

  652. and I want my prophets

  653. to actually give me

  654. the word of the Lord,

  655. but it's the word

  656. that he wants to hear.

  657. It's the word

  658. that will please him.

  659. He's very unhappy about it.

  660. He's scathing about it

  661. if somebody comes to him

  662. with a word from the Lord

  663. that's actually the truth.

  664. So that brings you

  665. to see Micaiah

  666. and his God.

  667. That's the situation

  668. in which Micaiah

  669. is placed.

  670. That's Ahab

  671. and his advisors,

  672. but look at Micaiah

  673. and his God.

  674. Now,

  675. Micaiah only appears

  676. in this chapter

  677. and in the equivalent chapter

  678. in 2 Chronicles.

  679. The only time

  680. it's mentioned

  681. in the Bible.

  682. And there's a point

  683. made by that itself

  684. and it's this,

  685. that although he's not

  686. prominent like Elijah

  687. or Elisha

  688. or Moses

  689. or somebody like that

  690. who is demonstrably

  691. and publicly powerful

  692. in the name of the Lord,

  693. yet Micaiah here,

  694. as he stands for the Lord,

  695. is doing just as important

  696. at work in many respects

  697. as the ones

  698. who are prominent

  699. in the ways of the Lord.

  700. And it reminds you

  701. and I ourselves,

  702. even if we say,

  703. well, I can't do

  704. the kind of things

  705. that other people

  706. are doing for the Lord.

  707. I don't have the gifts

  708. that other people have

  709. that are more public,

  710. that are actually

  711. obviously more to the front,

  712. to the forefront

  713. of the cause of Christ.

  714. I'm not like that.

  715. The Lord is saying,

  716. I don't want you

  717. to be like that.

  718. What I'm saying is,

  719. what he's saying to you is,

  720. whatever he has given you

  721. to use, use it.

  722. Whether it's prominent or not.

  723. Here's a man

  724. who's faithful to the Lord,

  725. facing all of these pressures.

  726. He's not really

  727. a man who's given

  728. to being in the public eye,

  729. it seems,

  730. from this passage.

  731. And yet,

  732. here he is,

  733. presenting the will of God

  734. to 400

  735. of Ahab's prophets

  736. and to Ahab himself.

  737. Now, you don't have to be,

  738. you don't have to be prominent.

  739. You don't have to be

  740. to the fore publicly.

  741. Wherever God

  742. has placed you in life,

  743. that's where you serve him.

  744. Whatever your view is

  745. of how he has endowed you

  746. or otherwise,

  747. or how you compare

  748. with other people

  749. or otherwise,

  750. what the Lord

  751. is calling for you to do

  752. is to use

  753. what he's given you,

  754. where he's placed you,

  755. and to do that

  756. in dependence upon himself.

  757. And you can see Ahab's

  758. hatred of the truth,

  759. as we're seeing here,

  760. Micaiah and his God.

  761. But then, you see,

  762. as the narrative moves on,

  763. this is what Ahab says,

  764. I hate him,

  765. for he never prophesies

  766. good concerning me,

  767. but evil.

  768. And you see,

  769. what Ahab is doing is

  770. he's calling good

  771. what pleases himself.

  772. And he's calling

  773. what is a word from the Lord

  774. through the likes of Micaiah

  775. as evil.

  776. He's turned his own world

  777. upside down

  778. because he is so much

  779. against God

  780. and in favor of just hearing

  781. something that flatters himself.

  782. And you know,

  783. that's still the truth.

  784. That's still true

  785. of the world

  786. in which we live.

  787. How many times

  788. over the last week

  789. have you read something,

  790. whether on Twitter,

  791. Facebook,

  792. news reports,

  793. or whatever,

  794. wherever you've seen it,

  795. but you've seen

  796. more than once,

  797. I'm sure.

  798. The idea,

  799. the statement,

  800. something like,

  801. here is someone

  802. who believes

  803. the Bible literally,

  804. something that's not fit

  805. for this century,

  806. something that's not fit

  807. for 2023.

  808. How can anyone

  809. who actually believes

  810. these things

  811. be thought of

  812. as a suitable leader

  813. of a country

  814. in this day and age?

  815. Well,

  816. Micaiah faced that.

  817. Micaiah faced

  818. that same philosophy.

  819. Micaiah faced

  820. the same thing

  821. as he faced

  822. Ahab and these

  823. false prophets

  824. who would say,

  825. no,

  826. your version of

  827. the word of the Lord,

  828. that's completely outdated.

  829. What we want

  830. is people

  831. who are actually

  832. progressive.

  833. People are progressive

  834. and don't actually

  835. have that old-fashioned way,

  836. this is what the Lord

  837. is saying,

  838. this is the word

  839. of the Lord.

  840. You see,

  841. Ahab

  842. really calls

  843. good

  844. what pleases himself.

  845. That's what's suitable.

  846. That's what fits

  847. with the society he wants.

  848. That's what really

  849. is so much different

  850. to the likes of Micaiah.

  851. And what Micaiah says to him,

  852. oh, that's evil.

  853. That's not good.

  854. That's bad.

  855. Don't want to hear that.

  856. That's not suitable.

  857. That's not relevant.

  858. That doesn't fit

  859. the situation at all.

  860. Put that behind you.

  861. Give me something

  862. that's up to date.

  863. Something that pleases myself.

  864. Something that flatters

  865. my human ingenuity.

  866. And that's Ahab's

  867. hatred of the truth.

  868. And that's

  869. countered by

  870. Micaiah's love

  871. of the truth.

  872. There's an attempt,

  873. you see,

  874. in,

  875. incidentally,

  876. Micaiah's name

  877. actually means

  878. who is like

  879. the Lord.

  880. Who's like

  881. Yahweh or Jehovah.

  882. That's interesting

  883. that that's the meaning

  884. of his Hebrew name

  885. Micaiah.

  886. Who is like

  887. the Lord?

  888. And, you know,

  889. if people were really

  890. taking account

  891. of names in those days

  892. as they often did,

  893. here is Ahab

  894. knowing who Micaiah is

  895. and what he stands for.

  896. And there before him

  897. in the very person

  898. and the name of Micaiah

  899. is this great question

  900. that he should really

  901. be facing.

  902. Who is like

  903. the Lord?

  904. And that comes

  905. across to ourselves,

  906. doesn't it?

  907. Who is like

  908. the Lord?

  909. That's what we're

  910. standing for.

  911. The uniqueness,

  912. the greatness,

  913. the glory of this

  914. God we worship

  915. unlike any other,

  916. superior to any other,

  917. above everyone else,

  918. and alone worthy

  919. of our worship.

  920. Well, here is

  921. a first attempt,

  922. you see,

  923. in verse 9,

  924. if you read these verses

  925. from verse 9,

  926. Jehoshaphat said,

  927. let not the king see.

  928. So then the king of Israel

  929. summoned an officer

  930. and said,

  931. bring quickly Micaiah,

  932. the son of Imlah.

  933. So he's going to send

  934. a messenger

  935. to get Micaiah

  936. wherever he is

  937. to come to where the king

  938. and where Jehoshaphat are.

  939. But meantime,

  940. what does he do?

  941. What does Ahab do?

  942. Well, he calls

  943. these prophets

  944. of the Lord.

  945. They were sitting,

  946. these kings,

  947. two of them

  948. were sitting on their thrones,

  949. arrayed in their robes,

  950. very grand.

  951. And then this man,

  952. Zedekiah,

  953. one of the false prophets,

  954. the son of Hananah,

  955. he made for himself

  956. horns of iron.

  957. And he said,

  958. thus says the Lord,

  959. with these you shall

  960. push the Syrians

  961. until they are destroyed.

  962. And all the prophets

  963. prophesied so.

  964. They said the same thing

  965. and said,

  966. go up to Ramoth,

  967. Gilead,

  968. and triumph,

  969. the Lord will give it

  970. into the hand of the king.

  971. See what's happening?

  972. They're trying to actually

  973. put on such a show

  974. and such a persuasive show,

  975. such a thing for Jehoshaphat

  976. that will persuade him

  977. and really bring his mind

  978. to be confirmed that,

  979. yes, these people

  980. are telling you the truth.

  981. You see,

  982. they want to do it

  983. before Micaiah comes.

  984. Because when Micaiah comes,

  985. Ahab knows full well

  986. he's not going to go along

  987. with us.

  988. He's not going to go along

  989. with us,

  990. Sharad, at all.

  991. And so he wants,

  992. as far as possible,

  993. that Jehoshaphat

  994. will be convinced

  995. what Ahab is doing

  996. is a good thing.

  997. What these prophets

  998. are saying

  999. is really the truth

  1000. from God.

1001. And he wants to persuade

  1002. Jehoshaphat,

  1003. you can easily,

  1004. you can very readily

  1005. go along with this.

  1006. It's fine.

  1007. Everything's okay.

1008. This is the way to go.

  1009. And that's why

  1010. he has this performance.

  1011. And you know,

  1012. that's what's really serious.

  1013. We know that

  1014. the truth of God

  1015. will always be opposed

1016. by what is not true,

  1017. by false teaching,

  1018. by heresy,

  1019. by what is completely

1020. at odds with the Word of God.

  1021. We know that

  1022. that's what's going to happen.

  1023. We know that

  1024. that's what's happening now.

  1025. We know it happens

  1026. in every generation

  1027. to some extent.

1028. But what you find here

1029. is a step further than that.

  1030. The serious thing is

  1031. that truth is now,

  1032. the false rather,

  1033. is now seeing itself

  1034. as being the true.

  1035. These people

  1036. look to be themselves.

  1037. Perhaps they are

  1038. just convinced.

  1039. That's what happens,

  1040. you see,

  1041. when you give yourself

  1042. over to the lie,

  1043. when you give yourself

1044. over to be swallowed up

  1045. by the heresy

  1046. that you yourself

  1047. are promoting.

  1048. Eventually,

1049. you come to believe it.

  1050. And eventually,

  1051. you come to believe

1052. that this is in fact

  1053. the truth.

1054. That this is really superior

  1055. to anything the likes

  1056. of Micaiah is saying.

  1057. And here are these

  1058. 400 people

  1059. going through this performance

  1060. headed up by

  1061. Zedekiah,

  1062. the son of Henanah.

1063. And there is the lie.

  1064. There is the falseness.

  1065. There is the heresy

  1066. parading itself

  1067. as the truth,

  1068. believing itself

  1069. to be the truth.

  1070. And that's when

  1071. it gets really serious.

  1072. Because that's what

  1073. we're facing

  1074. in our generation.

  1075. We're not just

  1076. aware of a clash

  1077. between that

  1078. which is false

1079. and that which is true.

  1080. We're aware of

  1081. the false

  1082. passing itself off

  1083. as the true.

  1084. We're aware of

  1085. church people

  1086. being taken in

  1087. by the false

  1088. because they've come

  1089. to believe

  1090. that it's the true.

  1091. And it doesn't matter

  1092. whether they're moderators

  1093. or bishops

  1094. or archbishops

  1095. or priests

  1096. or ministers

  1097. whatever they are.

  1098. Once you start believing

  1099. that the false

  1100. is the true

1101. you have a real crisis.

1102. And you have a crisis

  1103. because

  1104. people are going

  1105. to follow that

  1106. because it's a lot easier

  1107. than to stand

  1108. where Micaiah is standing

  1109. and actually say

1110. no this is the truth.

  1111. This is what God

  1112. is saying.

  1113. That's where

  1114. it's a challenge.

  1115. That's where

  1116. it's difficult.

  1117. That's where

  1118. you really need

  1119. the grace of God

  1120. to steal you.

  1121. And especially

  1122. when you're outnumbered

  1123. 400 to 1.

  1124. And that's why

  1125. Paul wrote

  1126. as he did

  1127. to the likes

  1128. of Galatians.

1129. Listen to what he says

  1130. in the first chapter

  1131. verses 6 to 10.

  1132. I am astonished

  1133. that you are

  1134. so quickly

  1135. deserting him

  1136. who called you

  1137. in the grace

  1138. of Christ

  1139. and are turning

  1140. to a different gospel.

  1141. Not that there is

  1142. another one

  1143. but there are some

  1144. who trouble you

  1145. and want to

  1146. distort the gospel

  1147. of Christ.

  1148. But even if we

  1149. or an angel

  1150. from heaven

  1151. should preach

  1152. to you

  1153. a gospel

  1154. contrary to the one

  1155. we preached to you

  1156. let him be

  1157. accursed.

  1158. As we have said

  1159. before

  1160. so now I say

  1161. if anyone

  1162. is preaching

  1163. to you

  1164. a gospel

  1165. contrary to the one

  1166. you received

  1167. let him be

  1168. accursed.

  1169. As strong

  1170. words as even

  1171. an apostle

  1172. could write.

  1173. Why?

1174. Why is he so vehement?

  1175. Why is he using

  1176. such language?

  1177. Because he knows

  1178. that something

  1179. is happening

  1180. that's going

  1181. to destroy

  1182. the gospel.

  1183. That's going

  1184. to get people's

  1185. minds to think

  1186. that the false

  1187. is actually

  1188. the true.

  1189. When you go

  1190. through the

  1191. the New Testament

  1192. you'll find

  1193. that the

  1194. second last

  1195. book of

  1196. the Bible

  1197. the book

  1198. of Jude

  1199. very short

  1200. book

  1201. but a very

  1202. important

  1203. dynamic book

  1204. in its own

  1205. right

  1206. and Jude

  1207. tells those

  1208. who are

  1209. receiving his

  1210. letter

  1211. as to

  1212. why he's

  1213. chosen

  1214. to actually

  1215. write

  1216. in the way

  1217. he does.

  1218. I meant

  1219. to write

  1220. to you

  1221. he said

  1222. about

  1223. a common

  1224. salvation.

  1225. You're going

  1226. to write

  1227. something

  1228. of a treatise

  1229. whether it

  1230. be justification

  1231. or whatever

  1232. but he said

  1233. I found

  1234. it necessary

  1235. to write

  1236. to appeal

  1237. to you

  1238. to contend

  1239. for the

  1240. faith

  1241. that was

  1242. once for

  1243. all delivered

  1244. to the saints

  1245. for certain

  1246. people have

  1247. crept in

  1248. unnoticed

  1249. who were

  1250. already designated

  1251. for this

  1252. condemnation

  1253. ungodly

  1254. people

  1255. who pervert

  1256. the grace

  1257. of our God

  1258. into sensuality

  1259. that's right

  1260. up to date

  1261. isn't it?

  1262. Who pervert

  1263. the grace

  1264. of God

  1265. into sensuality

  1266. and deny

  1267. our only

  1268. master

  1269. and lord

  1270. Jesus

  1271. Christ?

  1272. And that's

  1273. you see

  1274. what's happened

  1275. it's come

  1276. from within

  1277. when the

  1278. people of the

  1279. church

  1280. when the

  1281. ministers

  1282. of the

  1283. church

  1284. when the

  1285. bishops

  1286. of the

  1287. church

  1288. when they

  1289. actually

  1290. come to

  1291. believe

  1292. the false

  1293. to be

  1294. the true

  1295. this is

  1296. what happens

  1297. it spreads

  1298. like a poison

  1299. and it

  1300. weakens

  1301. the cause

  1302. and it

  1303. becomes

  1304. totally

  1305. ineffective

  1306. of changing

  1307. people's

  1308. lives

  1309. I remember

  1310. one time

  1311. when I was

  1312. doing agriculture

  1313. and my

  1314. father said

  1315. when you

  1316. go back

  1317. to the

  1318. college

  1319. this was

  1320. on holiday

  1321. and he

  1322. said

  1323. ask one

  1324. of the

  1325. folk

  1326. in the

  1327. college

  1328. of agriculture

  1329. they ask

  1330. them

  1331. if they

  1332. know

  1333. what's

  1334. happening

  1335. to the

  1336. potato

  1337. plants

  1338. because

  1339. there's

  1340. a little

  1341. worm

  1342. that's

  1343. been

  1344. growing up

  1345. inside

  1346. the

  1347. potato

  1348. stalks

  1349. and it

  1350. kills

  1351. off

  1352. the

  1353. plant

  1354. and see

  1355. if you

  1356. can find

  1357. out

  1358. what

  1359. that

  1360. is

  1361. so I

  1362. went

  1363. and asked

  1364. one of

  1365. the

  1366. lecturers

  1367. what this

  1368. was

  1369. and he

  1370. said

  1371. I know

  1372. what that

  1373. is

  1374. that's

  1375. the

  1376. rosy

  1377. rustic

  1378. moth

  1379. and when

  1380. it lays

  1381. its eggs

  1382. and develops

  1383. into a

  1384. larvae

  1385. the larvae

  1386. of the

  1387. rosy

  1388. rustic

  1389. moth

  1390. it burrows

  1391. inside

  1392. the

  1393. potato

  1394. stem

  1395. it works

  1396. its way

  1397. it eats

  1398. its way

  1399. up the

  1400. inside

  1401. of the

  1402. stem

  1403. and eventually

  1404. of course

  1405. the plant

  1406. dies

  1407. there's no

  1408. growth

  1409. so there's

  1410. no

  1411. product

  1412. that's

  1413. what false

  1414. teaching

  1415. does

  1416. it doesn't

  1417. come out

  1418. unashamedly

  1419. and say

  1420. look at me

  1421. I'm false

  1422. teaching

  1423. it's like

  1424. the rosy

  1425. rustic

  1426. larvae

  1427. it gets

  1428. inside

  1429. and it

  1430. starts

  1431. eating

  1432. from within

  1433. and before

  1434. you know it

  1435. the plant

  1436. is beginning

  1437. to die

  1438. and if

  1439. it's not

  1440. changed

  1441. it will

  1442. die

  1443. and here

  1444. is

  1445. the first

  1446. attempt

  1447. to take

  1448. Micaiah

  1449. aside

  1450. to take

  1451. him out

  1452. of the

  1453. equation

  1454. to knock

  1455. out what

  1456. he's going

  1457. to say

  1458. but of

  1459. course

  1460. the next

  1461. attempt

  1462. is the

  1463. man who

  1464. went to

  1465. fetch

  1466. Micaiah

  1467. in verse

  1468. 15

  1469. this is

  1470. what

  1471. you read

  1472. there

  1473. in verse

  1474. 15

  1475. here's

  1476. the man

  1477. who went

  1478. to

  1479. Micaiah

  1480. when he'd

  1481. come to

  1482. the king

  1483. he said

  1484. to

  1485. this man

  1486. who was

  1487. sent as a

  1488. messenger

  1489. to win

  1490. Micaiah

  1491. over

  1492. he said

  1493. to him

  1494. now all

  1495. of these

  1496. prophets

  1497. of the

  1498. Lord

  1499. all these

  1500. prophets

  1501. have said

  1502. the one

  1503. thing

  1504. and

  1505. I want

  1506. you

  1507. you should

  1508. really

  1509. just

  1510. comply

  1511. with

  1512. that

  1513. all

  1514. of

  1515. these

  1516. prophets

  1517. have said

  1518. favorable

  1519. to the

  1520. king

  1521. in verse

  1522. 13

  1523. behold

  1524. the words

  1525. of the

  1526. prophets

  1527. with one

  1528. accord

  1529. are

  1530. favorable

  1531. to the

  1532. king

  1533. let

  1534. your

  1535. word

  1536. be

  1537. like

  1538. the

  1539. word

  1540. of

  1541. one

  1542. of

  1543. them

  1544. and

  1545. speak

  1546. favorably

  1547. you can

  1548. just

  1549. always

  1550. picture

  1551. that

  1552. you can

  1553. always

  1554. picture

  1555. this

  1556. man

  1557. coming

  1558. to

  1559. Micaiah

  1560. and

  1561. really

  1562. putting

  1563. his

  1564. arm

  1565. around

  1566. him

  1567. on

  1568. his

  1569. shoulder

  1570. and

  1571. saying

  1572. now

  1573. look

  1574. Micaiah

  1575. all

  1576. of

  1577. these

  1578. the

  1579. 400

  1580. of

  1581. them

  1582. unanimously

  1583. have

  1584. come

  1585. to

  1586. speak

  1587. favorably

  1588. to

  1589. the

  1590. king

  1591. why

  1592. should

  1593. you

  1594. be

  1595. a

  1596. fool

  1597. and

  1598. go

  1599. differently

  1600. why

  1601. should

  1602. you

  1603. say

  1604. something

  1605. different

  1606. to

  1607. them

  1608. what's

  1609. the

  1610. point

  1611. of

  1612. making

  1613. trouble

  1614. for

  1615. yourself

  1616. and

  1617. danger

  1618. for

  1619. yourself

  1620. just

  1621. actually

  1622. go along

  1623. with what

  1624. they're

  1625. saying

  1626. for the

  1627. moment

  1628. you can

  1629. keep

  1630. your own

  1631. views

  1632. to

  1633. yourself

  1634. you can

  1635. believe

  1636. what you

  1637. do

  1638. believe

  1639. you can

  1640. go on

  1641. believing

  1642. what you

  1643. want to

  1644. believe

  1645. but just

  1646. keep it

  1647. quiet

  1648. for the

  1649. moment

  1650. will

  1651. you

  1652. he's

  1653. trying to

  1654. actually

  1655. bring him

  1656. alongside

  1657. so that

  1658. he won't

  1659. be a

  1660. troublemaker

  1661. but he

  1662. meets

  1663. as much

  1664. as the

  1665. Lord

  1666. lives

  1667. what the

  1668. Lord

  1669. says to

  1670. me

  1671. that

  1672. will

  1673. I

  1674. speak

  1675. what

  1676. the

  1677. Lord

  1678. says

  1679. to

  1680. me

  1681. that

  1682. will

  1683. I

  1684. speak

  1685. and

  1686. that's

  1687. what

  1688. we're

  1689. committed

  1690. to

  1691. it

  1692. doesn't

  1693. matter

  1694. whether

  1695. we

  1696. in

  1697. pulpits

  1698. or

  1699. whether

  1700. we're

  1701. serving

  1702. the

  1703. Lord

  1704. in

  1705. whatever

  1706. way

  1707. we're

  1708. serving

  1709. him

  1710. whatever

  1711. we

  1712. have

  1713. as a

  1714. privilege

  1715. of

  1716. upholding

  1717. the

  1718. truth

  1719. of

  1720. God

  1721. when

  1722. the

  1723. world

  1724. comes

  1725. and

  1726. says

  1727. look

  1728. just

  1729. go

  1730. along

  1731. with

  1732. this

  1733. why

  1734. do

  1735. not

  1736. fall

  1737. in

  1738. with

  1739. the

  1740. majority

  1741. surely

  1742. they

  1743. can't

  1744. all

  1745. be

  1746. wrong

  1747. these

  1748. 400

  1749. and

  1750. you

  1751. as

  1752. one

  1753. person

  1754. you're

  1755. going

  1756. to

  1757. stand

  1758. surely

  1759. you're

  1760. not

  1761. going

  1762. to

  1763. say

  1764. I'm

  1765. actually

  1766. of

  1767. Lord

  1768. that

  1769. I

  1770. believe

  1771. it

  1772. doesn't

  1773. matter

  1774. what

  1775. anybody

  1776. tells

  1777. me

  1778. this

  1779. is

  1780. where

  1781. I

  1782. stand

  1783. this

  1784. is

  1785. what

  1786. I'm

  1787. going

  1788. to

  1789. stand

  1790. for

  1791. and

  1792. that's

  1793. what

  1794. Kate

  1795. Forbes

  1796. is

  1797. doing

  1798. in

  1799. her

  1800. own

  1801. sphere

  1802. of

  1803. serving

  1804. God

  1805. where

  1806. she

  1807. is

  1808. that's

  1809. why

  1810. it's

  1811. difficult

  1812. that's

  1813. why

  1814. it's

  1815. difficult

  1816. for

  1817. Micaiah

  1818. he's

  1819. facing

  1820. the

  1821. prospect

  1822. as

  1823. it

  1824. turned

  1825. out

  1826. indeed

  1827. he's

  1828. facing

  1829. the

  1830. prospect

  1831. of

  1832. imprisonment

  1833. which

  1834. is

  1835. what

  1836. happened

  1837. he knows

  1838. he's

  1839. going

  1840. to

  1841. face

  1842. real

  1843. difficulty

  1844. if he

  1845. stands

  1846. up

  1847. and

  1848. says

  1849. this

  1850. but

  1851. he

  1852. did

  1853. and

  1854. the

  1855. attempt

  1856. failed

  1857. to

  1858. take

  1859. him

  1860. aside

  1861. and

  1862. there's

  1863. his

  1864. answer

  1865. in

  1866. verse

  1867. 14

  1868. as

  1869. we

  1870. said

  1871. as

  1872. the

  1873. Lord

  1874. lives

  1875. what

  1876. the

  1877. Lord

  1878. has

  1879. said

  1880. that

  1881. I

  1882. will

  1883. speak

  1884. that

  1885. I

  1886. will

  1887. speak

  1888. what

  1889. is

  1890. it

  1891. that

  1892. gives

  1893. a

  1894. person

  1895. to

  1896. be

  1897. loyal

  1898. to

  1899. the

  1900. truth

  1901. of

  1902. God

  1903. well

  1904. in

  1905. a

  1906. word

  1907. it's

  1908. love

  1909. for

  1910. God

  1911. if

  1912. you

  1913. love

  1914. God

  1915. you

  1916. will

  1917. love

  1918. his

  1919. truth

  1920. if

  1921. you

  1922. love

  1923. the

  1924. Lord

  1925. you

  1926. will

  1927. stand

  1928. up

  1929. for

  1930. his

  1931. truth

  1932. if

  1933. you

  1934. love

  1935. the

  1936. Lord

  1937. you

  1938. will

  1939. not

  1940. give

  1941. away

  1942. his

  1943. truth

  1944. for

  1945. a

  1946. mess

  1947. of

  1948. pottage

  1949. for

  1950. political

  1951. whatever

  1952. advantage

  1953. but

  1954. this

  1955. is

  1956. the

  1957. new

  1958. tolerance

  1959. you

  1960. see

  1961. this

  1962. is

  1963. the

  1964. new

  1965. type

  1966. of

  1967. tolerance

  1968. we

  1969. are

  1970. told

  1971. is

  1972. what

  1973. we

  1974. need

  1975. to

  1976. follow

  1977. in

  1978. our

  1979. generation

  1980. you

  1981. accept

  1982. all

  1983. moral

  1984. positions

  1985. as

  1986. equals

  1987. that's

  1988. a new

  1989. way

  1990. relatively

  1991. new

  1992. way

  1993. of

  1994. looking

  1995. at

  1996. tolerance

  1997. because

  1998. tolerance

  1999. in the

  2000. old

  2001. sense

  2002. of the

  2003. word

  2004. tolerance

  2005. was

  2006. I

  2007. have

  2008. all

  2009. these

  2010. different

  2011. views

  2012. confronting

  2013. me

  2014. I

  2015. have

  2016. my

  2017. own

  2018. belief

  2019. I

  2020. have

  2021. my

  2022. own

  2023. view

  2024. but

  2025. tolerance

  2026. means

  2027. I'm

  2028. allowed

  2029. to

  2030. keep

  2031. that

  2032. view

  2033. without

  2034. actually

  2035. having

  2036. to

  2037. say

  2038. that

  2039. every

  2040. other

  2041. single

  2042. view

  2043. is

  2044. of

  2045. equal

  2046. validity

  2047. but

  2048. here

  2049. we

  2050. are

  2051. seeing

  2052. in

  2053. our

  2054. nation

  2055. some

  2056. people

  2057. actually

  2058. saying

  2059. here

  2060. is

  2061. a

  2062. woman

  2063. who

  2064. does

  2065. not

  2066. actually

  2067. believe

  2068. that

  2069. same

  2070. sex

  2071. marriage

  2072. is

  2073. the

  2074. right

  2075. thing

  2076. for

  2077. human

  2078. relationships

  2079. here

  2080. is

  2081. a

  2082. woman

  2083. who

  2084. says

  2085. that

  2086. she

  2087. doesn't

  2088. believe

  2089. that

  2090. females

  2091. ought to

  2092. be

  2093. ordained

  2094. to

  2095. office

  2096. in

  2097. the

  2098. church

  2099. here

  2100. is

  2101. a

  2102. woman

  2103. who

  2104. confines

  2105. herself

  2106. to

  2107. the

  2108. ethics

  2109. of

  2110. the

  2111. Bible

  2112. and

  2113. you

  2114. know

  2115. this

  2116. is

  2117. then

  2118. the

  2119. reaction

  2120. of

  2121. the

  2122. world

  2123. of

  2124. most

  2125. of

  2126. the

  2127. world

  2128. the

  2129. reaction

  2130. is

  2131. well

  2132. that

  2133. person

  2134. isn't

  2135. fit

  2136. to

  2137. lead

  2138. a

  2139. nation

  2140. if

  2141. she

  2142. doesn't

  2143. accept

  2144. every

  2145. point

  2146. of

  2147. view

  2148. of

  2149. equal

  2150. validity

  2151. ignorance

  2152. that's

  2153. tyranny

  2154. if I

  2155. have

  2156. every

  2157. single

  2158. view

  2159. set

  2160. before

  2161. me

  2162. that

  2163. people

  2164. think

  2165. and

  2166. if

  2167. I'm

  2168. told

  2169. you

  2170. know

  2171. the

  2172. only

  2173. way

  2174. that

  2175. we

  2176. can

  2177. accept

  2178. you

  2179. as

  2180. a

  2181. leader

  2182. in

  2183. political

  2184. life

  2185. is

  2186. if

  2187. you

  2188. say

  2189. of

  2190. all

  2191. of

  2192. these

  2193. views

  2194. whether

  2195. it's

  2196. on

  2197. marriage

  2198. or

  2199. human

  2200. relationship

  2201. or

  2202. whatever

  2203. if

  2204. you

  2205. actually

  2206. come

  2207. to

  2208. say

  2209. I

  2210. accept

  2211. that

  2212. they

  2213. are

  2214. all

  2215. equally

  2216. valid

  2217. that's

  2218. tyranny

  2219. that's

  2220. not

  2221. liberty

  2222. of

  2223. conscience

  2224. that's

  2225. not

  2226. freedom

  2227. at

  2228. all

  2229. I'm

  2230. reading

  2231. through

  2232. a book

  2233. just

  2234. now

  2235. which

  2236. by

  2237. Don

  2238. Carson

  2239. has

  2240. the

  2241. interesting

  2242. title

  2243. of

  2244. the

  2245. intolerance

  2246. of

  2247. tolerance

  2248. and

  2249. this

  2250. is

  2251. really

  2252. where

  2253. I

  2254. found

  2255. that

  2256. definition

  2257. or

  2258. rather

  2259. this

  2260. kind

  2261. of

  2262. idea

  2263. that

  2264. tolerance

  2265. has

  2266. changed

  2267. in

  2268. meaning

  2269. from

  2270. the

  2271. way

  2272. that

  2273. it

  2274. used

  2275. to

  2276. be

  2277. in

  2278. the

  2279. older

  2280. days

  2281. and

  2282. Carson

  2283. writes

  2284. about

  2285. one

  2286. of

  2287. the

  2288. most

  2289. central

  2290. myths

  2291. of

  2292. our

  2293. time

  2294. and

  2295. he

  2296. explains

  2297. that

  2298. he

  2299. says

  2300. according

  2301. to

  2302. this

  2303. myth

  2304. a

  2305. society

  2306. is

  2307. likely

  2308. to

  2309. be

  2310. most

  2311. tolerant

  2312. if

  2313. it

  2314. holds

  2315. to

  2316. flexible

  2317. non

  2318. dogmatic

  2319. notions

  2320. of

  2321. truth

  2322. conversely

  2323. a

  2324. society

  2325. is

  2326. likely

  2327. to

  2328. be

  2329. most

  2330. intolerant

  2331. this

  2332. is

  2333. a

  2334. myth

  2335. he

  2336. say

  2337. one

  2338. of

  2339. the

  2340. central

  2341. myths

  2342. of

  2343. our

  2344. time

  2345. conversely

  2346. he says

  2347. society

  2348. is likely

  2349. to be

  2350. most

  2351. intolerant

  2352. when it

  2353. holds to

  2354. absolute

  2355. truths

  2356. such as

  2357. the bible

  2358. which is

  2359. absolute

  2360. truth

  2361. truths that

  2362. are inflexible

  2363. and unbending

  2364. but he says

  2365. the reality

  2366. of the

  2367. situation

  2368. is just

  2369. the opposite

  2370. of what

  2371. we have

  2372. been led

  2373. to believe

  2374. put simply

  2375. tyranny

  2376. is not

  2377. the inevitable

  2378. outcome

  2379. of an

  2380. absolutist

  2381. view of

  2382. truth

  2383. but is

  2384. rather

  2385. the product

  2386. of

  2387. relativism

  2388. although

  2389. views

  2390. count

  2391. the same

  2392. likewise

  2393. tolerance

  2394. arises

  2395. not

  2396. from

  2397. relativism

  2398. but from

  2399. the very

  2400. thing that

  2401. our society

  2402. anathematizes

  2403. the belief

  2404. in

  2405. absolutes

  2406. the belief

  2407. in

  2408. absolutes

  2409. God

  2410. God's

  2411. truth

  2412. God's

  2413. law

  2414. word

  2415. the

  2416. old

  2417. tolerance

  2418. he goes

  2419. on to

  2420. say

  2421. is the

  2422. willingness

  2423. to put

  2424. up with

  2425. to allow

  2426. and to

  2427. endure

  2428. people

  2429. with ideas

  2430. and ideas

  2431. with whom

  2432. we disagree

  2433. the new

  2434. tolerance

  2435. is the

  2436. social

  2437. commitment

  2438. to treat

  2439. all ideas

  2440. and people

  2441. as equally

  2442. right

  2443. except for

  2444. those who

  2445. disagree

  2446. with this

  2447. view of

  2448. tolerance

  2449. and that's

  2450. the world

  2451. that Kate

  2452. Forbes is

  2453. facing

  2454. that's the

  2455. world in

  2456. which she

  2457. has to

  2458. present

  2459. consistency

  2460. to absolute

  2461. truth

  2462. that's why

  2463. she needs

  2464. our prayers

  2465. our support

  2466. our ongoing

  2467. encouragement

  2468. of it

  2469. whatever the

  2470. outcome

  2471. of the

  2472. election

  2473. is

  2474. she's in

  2475. the public

  2476. domain

  2477. public view

  2478. and public

  2479. target

  2480. now

  2481. and will

  2482. be

  2483. from

  2484. now

  2485. on

  2486. but let's

  2487. not fool

  2488. ourselves

  2489. time has

  2490. passed

  2491. I'm going

  2492. to finish

  2493. with this

  2494. my

  2495. Kai

  2496. I knew

  2497. one thing

  2498. that Ahab

  2499. didn't

  2500. and you know

  2501. it makes

  2502. all the

  2503. difference

  2504. in the

  2505. world

  2506. to a

  2507. human

  2508. being

  2509. and it's

  2510. this

  2511. my

  2512. Kai

  2513. I knew

  2514. that

  2515. whatever

  2516. outcomes

  2517. may be

  2518. in

  2519. anyone's

  2520. life

  2521. or in

  2522. anyone's

  2523. progress

  2524. in life

  2525. God

  2526. is in

  2527. charge

  2528. and if

  2529. God

  2530. has

  2531. actually

  2532. determined

  2533. something

  2534. if God

  2535. has

  2536. purposed

  2537. something

  2538. to come

  2539. to pass

  2540. that

  2541. will

  2542. come

  2543. to pass

  2544. whatever

  2545. attempts

  2546. are made

  2547. against it

  2548. and if

  2549. God

  2550. has

  2551. determined

  2552. or

  2553. purposed

  2554. or willed

  2555. something

  2556. will not

  2557. come to

  2558. pass

  2559. whatever

  2560. attempts

  2561. are made

  2562. to bring

  2563. it to

  2564. pass

  2565. they

  2566. will

  2567. fail

  2568. my

  2569. Kai

  2570. I knew

  2571. that

  2572. Kate Forbes

  2573. knows

  2574. that

  2575. she's

  2576. committed

  2577. to the

  2578. God

  2579. who is

  2580. governor

  2581. over all

  2582. things

  2583. in all

  2584. of human

  2585. life

  2586. and so

  2587. must we

  2588. be

  2589. and we

  2590. must not

  2591. forget

  2592. that what

  2593. really

  2594. lies behind

  2595. all of

  2596. this very

  2597. much is

  2598. similar to

  2599. indeed what

  2600. the Lord

  2601. prayed in

  2602. his prayer

  2603. in the

  2604. upper

  2605. Roman

  2606. John

  2607. 17

  2608. and this

  2609. is what

  2610. the Lord

  2611. said

  2612. and this

  2613. is what

  2614. really

  2615. in many

  2616. ways a

  2617. key to

  2618. it all

  2619. to what

  2620. you're

  2621. seeing

  2622. happening

  2623. at the

  2624. present

  2625. time

  2626. and indeed

  2627. a key

  2628. to similar

  2629. things down

  2630. through the

  2631. ages

  2632. well here

  2633. is what

  2634. the Lord

  2635. said in

  2636. John 17

  2637. and at

  2638. verse 14

  2639. I have

  2640. given them

  2641. your word

  2642. and the

  2643. world has

  2644. hated them

  2645. because they

  2646. are not of

  2647. the world

  2648. just as I

  2649. am not of

  2650. the world

  2651. I do not

  2652. ask that you

  2653. take them

  2654. out of the

  2655. world

  2656. but that you

  2657. keep them

  2658. from the

  2659. evil one

  2660. they are not

  2661. of the world

  2662. just as I

  2663. am not of

  2664. the world

  2665. sanctify them

  2666. in the

  2667. truth

  2668. your word

  2669. is

  2670. truth

  2671. I have

  2672. given them

  2673. your word

  2674. therefore the

  2675. world hates

  2676. them

  2677. because they

  2678. are not of

  2679. the world

  2680. just as I

  2681. am not of

  2682. the world

  2683. and the

  2684. interesting and

  2685. important thing

  2686. is when the

  2687. Lord went

  2688. on in his

  2689. prayer

  2690. he didn't

  2691. ask that the

  2692. Lord would

  2693. take them

  2694. out in fact

  2695. he specifically

  2696. said I do

  2697. not pray that

  2698. you would

  2699. take them

  2700. out of the

  2701. world

  2702. why did he

  2703. pray that

  2704. he would

  2705. not take

  2706. them out

  2707. of the

  2708. world

  2709. should that

  2710. be easier

  2711. for them

  2712. yes of

  2713. course it

  2714. would

  2715. but they

  2716. are his

  2717. lights

  2718. in the

  2719. world

  2720. they are

  2721. the

  2722. conscience

  2723. of the

  2724. world

  2725. and the

  2726. Lord is

  2727. not going

  2728. to remove

  2729. the conscience

  2730. of the

  2731. world

  2732. just because

  2733. it's being

  2734. attacked

  2735. I don't

  2736. pray I

  2737. pray that

  2738. you would

  2739. don't pray

  2740. that you

  2741. would take

  2742. them out

  2743. of the

  2744. world

  2745. but that

  2746. you would

  2747. keep

  2748. them

  2749. from the

  2750. evil

  2751. one

  2752. that you

  2753. would

  2754. shield

  2755. them

  2756. and guard

  2757. them

  2758. against

  2759. the evil

  2760. that faces

  2761. them

  2762. that's our

  2763. prayer

  2764. for

  2765. ourselves

  2766. that's our

  2767. prayer for

  2768. Kate

  2769. that's our

  2770. prayer for

  2771. all who

  2772. stand publicly

  2773. and seek to

  2774. be true to

  2775. God

  2776. and that's what

  2777. this passage

  2778. itself is

  2779. setting out

  2780. if you want a

  2781. heading for our

  2782. study this

  2783. evening

  2784. it's what I've

  2785. given you

  2786. on the

  2787. bulletin sheet

  2788. hated

  2789. for speaking

  2790. the truth

  2791. may God bless

  2792. these thoughts

  2793. on his word

  2794. to us

  2795. we'll now

  2796. conclude by

  2797. singing

  2798. from Psalm

  2799. 25

  2800. Psalm 25

  2801. that's on

  2802. page 30

  2803. the tune

  2804. this time

  2805. is Finart

  2806. singing

  2807. from verse

  2808. 16 to the

  2809. end of the

  2810. psalm

  2811. turn to me

  2812. Lord

  2813. show me

  2814. your grace

  2815. I suffer

  2816. pain and

  2817. loneliness

  2818. the troubles

  2819. of my heart

  2820. have grown

  2821. deliver me

  2822. from my

  2823. distress

  2824. look on my

  2825. pain and

  2826. suffering

  2827. forgive all

  2828. my iniquity

  2829. see how my

  2830. foes have

  2831. multiplied

  2832. how fierce

  2833. their hatred

  2834. is for me

  2835. and so on

  2836. to the end

  2837. of the psalm

  2838. to God's

  2839. praise

  2840. turn to

  2841. me

  2842. Lord

  2843. show me

  2844. your grace

  2845. I suffer

  2846. I suffer

  2847. pain and

  2848. lonely

  2849. care

  2850. that

  2851. all

  2852. my

  2853. heart

  2854. have grown

  2855. deliver me

  2856. from my

  2857. distress

  2858. rest

  2859. look on

  2860. my

  2861. pain

  2862. and

  2863. suffering

  2864. forgive

  2865. all

  2866. my

  2867. iniquity

  2868. see how

  2869. thy

  2870. holds

  2871. the

  2872. mountain

  2873. defied

  2874. how fierce

  2875. their hatred

  2876. is for me

  2877. O God

  2878. my life

  2879. and rescue

  2880. thee

  2881. and let

  2882. me not

  2883. be good

  2884. to share

  2885. for thy

  2886. take refuge

  2887. in you

  2888. Lord

  2889. from those

  2890. who

  2891. destroy

  2892. my name

  2893. because

  2894. I hope

  2895. in you

  2896. alone

  2897. let

  2898. our

  2899. right

  2900. best

  2901. protect

  2902. me

  2903. still

  2904. from

  2905. all

  2906. their

  2907. troubles

  2908. of

  2909. thy

  2910. God

  2911. redeem

  2912. your

  2913. people

  2914. Israel

  2915. I'll go

  2916. to the

  2917. main door

  2918. after the

  2919. benediction

  2920. now may

  2921. grace

  2922. mercy

  2923. and peace

  2924. from God

  2925. the Father

  2926. the Son

  2927. and the Holy

  2928. Spirit

  2929. be with us

  2930. now and

  2931. evermore

  2932. Amen

  2933. amen

  2934. and

  2935. to

  2936. my

  2937. love

  2938. you

  2939. you
