  1. We're going to begin our worship now, singing first of all in Psalm 106, in the Scottish

  2. Psalter, Psalm 106, that's on page 378.

  3. Singing verses 1 to 5, give praise and thanks unto the Lord, for bountiful is He, His tender

  4. mercy doth endure unto eternity. God's mighty works who can express or show forth all His

  5. praise. Blessed are they that judgment keep and justly do always. Psalm 106, verses 1

    Psalms 106:1–5

  6. to 5, if you're able to stand, please stand. We'll stand to sing.

  7. Give praise and thanks unto the Lord, for bountiful is He, their tender mercy doth endure.

  8. And to eternity. God's mighty works who can express or show forth all His praise.

  9. Blessed are they that judgment keep and justly do always.

  10. Remember me, Lord, with the love which thou do not bear.

  11. Remember me, Lord, with the love which thou do not bear.

  12. Remember me, Lord, with the love which thou do not bear.

  13. God's mighty gloriousaja das Heim hat alive.

  14. You are the only one who's ق добnahme an devotion which thou do not bear but earn.

  15. That thy right chosen's good mercy, and in their joy rejoice,

  16. and may with thy inheritance triumph with cheerful voice.

  17. Let's now join together in prayer. We're praying at this time for the Sunday School and for the Young Folks'

  18. meeting, so we'll pray especially for them at this time.

  19. Lord, our gracious God, we give thanks that we are able to come together of all ages to worship you today,

  20. and we give thanks for the way that your interest in us is not confined to any particular age group,

  21. but we give thanks, O Lord, for your grace that is extended to us all.

  22. We thank you today for the young people and for the children that belong to us as a congregation,

  23. and we thank you, O Lord, for the way that they give us such delight

  24. in seeing them come to learn the things of God, coming to join together in public worship,

  25. and coming to understand the importance as they grow up of those things that are foundational to life

  26. from the teaching of your Word.

  27. Bless them, we pray today, and give them as they learn more of you,

  28. and as they learn more of your Word and its meaning and its significance.

  29. Lord, help them today to increase in understanding and in the application of this to their lives.

  30. Bless them in their homes, their parents and families.

  31. We ask that you bless them in whatever else they do in life,

  32. and as they grow up especially, we pray, they will grow in the grace and in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  33. Receive our prayers for them, we pray, and help us to be a means of encouragement and help to them,

  34. and bless those who give up their time today to teach them or to look after them

  35. in creche or tweenies and in the Sunday school and Bible class.

  36. We thank you, Lord, for their dedication and for their commitment to these wonderful tasks

  37. of teaching our young people.

  38. Receive our thanks, we pray, in Jesus' name. Amen.

  39. Amen.

  40. Well, you'll notice if you go into supermarkets these days that there's usually or almost always now

  41. a section of free from food.

  42. Anybody notice that?

  43. Any of the children here?

  44. Stick your hand up if you noticed free from food,

  45. or if you know anything about why free from food is now important for some people.

  46. Some people do.

  47. Okay, well, there's always a section now on free from food.

  48. Why is it necessary to have a section there on free from food?

  49. What is free from food, and why is it important to some people?

  50. Well, it's important because some people have a really bad reaction to certain things you find in some foods.

  51. For example, in ordinary bread that's not free from, it contains gluten.

  52. And some people have a bad reaction to gluten and can become very ill if they eat something with gluten in it.

  53. The same with dairy products.

  54. Those who have problems with dairy products can't eat dairy products because, again, they have a bad reaction to it.

  55. So nowadays, you get food that's free from those types of things.

  56. Nuts is another thing that people react badly to.

  57. Some people do.

  58. Don't panic if you know that there are certain things that people react to in that way.

  59. This is really something that affects only a certain number of people.

  60. But, of course, it's important to them that they actually can't take ordinary bread or any nuts or stuff like that.

  61. They need free from food.

  62. And our grandchildren, for example, a number of the boys have always had difficulty with gluten and dairy products,

  63. and they have a bad reaction to that.

  64. And that can actually be very dangerous if it's really quite acute.

  65. So they always need free from food.

  66. But their mom always has to check the jars or the tins of stuff she buys because the ingredients, the stuff that's in the food, is listed on the jars.

  67. And she has to make sure that there's nothing in that that can really prove to be harmful or would really cause a bad reaction or be dangerous even to the children that have these allergies and intolerances, as they're called.

  68. And the ingredients, the stuff that could be harmful nowadays, are highlighted in bold, bold letters, big black letters.

  69. So you can see there if there's anything that's going to be harmful, obviously you put it back.

  70. And it's important to check that.

  71. Otherwise, it could be very dangerous for children that have these problems or for adults as well that have these problems.

  72. Nuts, gluten, all that sort of stuff.

  73. Now, the Bible has nothing bad in it.

  74. Nothing in the Bible that will be harmful to you.

  75. Nothing in the Bible that will damage you.

  76. It's the other way about, in fact.

  77. Everything that's in the Bible is good for you.

  78. That's why we want to learn it.

  79. That's why we want the young folks as well to learn it more and more and to learn its teachings for themselves.

  80. And, oh, there's nothing bad in the Bible.

  81. It does tell us about many things that are bad for us.

  82. And just as you need to be careful with food if you've got allergies to nuts or whatever,

  83. so we need to be careful about what sort of stuff, spiritually or morally, we take into our lives.

  84. And we need to be sure that we have a free-from diet as far as possible with those matters that will harm us spiritually and morally.

  85. The Bible tells us very specifically at times things that we are to avoid to have in our spiritual food, if you like.

  86. When Paul wrote to the Ephesians, to the Colossians, he listed a number of things that were really harmful.

  87. Telling lies was one of them.

  88. Always, he says, be truthful with one another.

  89. Bad language.

  90. Just because the world uses bad language doesn't mean it's okay.

  91. It's bad for us.

  92. It's not good.

  93. The same thing with hatred, disobedience to parents.

  94. All these things are mentioned in the Bible as harmful or bad for us and will damage our lives and will damage the lives of other people as well.

  95. Laziness.

  96. Laziness is mentioned in the Bible as something bad as well.

  97. Because God didn't make us to be lazy.

  98. He made us to work, to work hard.

  99. He made us to actually work so that it will benefit other people as well as ourselves.

  100. And bad company.

  101. Getting with or being always with people who hate God, who don't love God, who say bad things about the gospel, who don't like God's church.

  102. We want, of course, them to come to know the truth.

  103. But the Bible says that bad company corrupts good manners, good behavior.

  104. So free from is very important in foodstuffs.

  105. For those who have allergies and intolerances, free from is also important spiritually for us.

  106. Leave out of your life, young people.

  107. All the things the Bible tells you are harmful to you and harmful to other people.

  108. And that way we will live a life that's pleasing to God.

  109. A life of what the Bible calls holiness of life.

  110. A life that wants to get rid of all the harmful, sinful stuff and get God's help to enable us to do that.

  111. Okay, so next time you see in the supermarket, look for the free from stuff.

  112. And it reminds you of how important it is to live as far as possible free from everything that the Bible tells you is bad for you.

  113. Well, let's now say the Lord's Prayer together.

  114. Amen.

  115. Amen.

  116. Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

  117. Thy kingdom come.

  118. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  119. Give us this day our daily bread.

  120. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

  121. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  122. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory.

  123. Amen.

  124. Let's sing again to God's praise from Psalm 12.

  125. Psalm number 12.

  126. Again, it's in the Scottish Psalter, page 213.

  127. We'll sing the whole of this psalm.

  128. Lord, help, because the godly man doth daily fade away,

  129. and from among the sons of men the faithful do decay.

  130. And to his neighbor everyone doth utter vanity.

  131. They with a double heart do speak, and lips of flattery.

  132. Here is the psalmist, times when those who believed in God were becoming few in his day,

  133. as he saw it at least.

  134. And he's crying out to the Lord for help, not only for himself, but for the world in which he was placed.

  135. And that's what we too pray to God about.

  136. Psalm 12.

  137. Help, Lord, because the godly man doth daily fade away.

  138. Help, Lord, because the godly man doth daily fade away.

  139. And from among the sons of men the faithful do decay.

  140. And to this day let everyone doth utter vanity.

  141. God, Lord, because the godly man doth daily fade away.

  142. God, Lord, because the godly man doth daily fade away.

  143. And to this day let everyone doth daily fade away.

  144. God, Lord, because the godly man doth daily fade away.

  145. We'll with our tongue prevail our lips, our marches for your eyes.

  146. For the open stand for the sight of me, the right will I.

  147. Safe, fraud, and in vain safety set from such a sin he died.

  148. The words of God are words close pure, in divine silver dry.

  149. In heaven, by the seven times, the top finger high.

  150. Lord, thou shalt and bring seven feet forever from this grave.

  151. On its side walk thou wakest when I'll lend our high embrace.

  152. Our reading today of God's Word is from the book of Daniel, the book of the prophet Daniel in the first chapter.

  153. We'll read through the chapter from the beginning through to the end of the chapter.

  154. The book of Daniel, it should be run about page 890, 891 in your pew Bibles.

  155. So, reading through the first chapter.

  156. In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem and besieged it.

  157. And the Lord gave Jehoiakim, king of Judah, into his hand and some of the vessels of the house of God.

  158. And he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his God, and placed the vessels in the treasury of his God.

  159. Then the king commanded Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch, to bring some of the people of Israel, both of the royal family and of the nobility,

  160. youths without blemish of good appearance and skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, understanding, learning,

  161. and competent to stand in the king's palace, and to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans.

  162. The king assigned them a daily portion of the food that the king ate, and of the wine that he drank.

  163. They were to be educated for three years.

  164. And at the end of that time, they were to stand before the king.

  165. Among these were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah of the tribe of Judah.

  166. And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names.

  167. Daniel he called Belteshazzar, Hananiah he called Shadrach, Mishael he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego.

  168. But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king's food or with the wine that he drank.

  169. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself.

  170. And God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs.

  171. And the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel,

  172. I fear my lord the king, who assigned your food and your drink.

  173. For why should he see that you are in worse condition than the youths who are of your own age?

  174. So you would endanger my head with the king.

  175. Then Daniel said to the steward, whom the chief of the eunuchs had assigned over Daniel,

  176. Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, test your servants for ten days.

  177. Let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink.

  178. Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat the king's food be observed by you.

  179. And deal with your servants according to what you see.

  180. So he listened to them in this matter and tested them for ten days.

  181. At the end of ten days it was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh

  182. than all the youths who ate the king's food.

  183. So the steward took away their food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables.

  184. As for these four youths, God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom.

  185. And Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

  186. At the end of the time when the king had commanded that they should be brought in,

  187. the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

  188. And the king spoke with them.

  189. And among all of them none was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

  190. Therefore they stood before the king.

  191. And in every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king inquired of them,

  192. he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters that were in all his kingdom.

  193. And Daniel was there until the first year of King Cyrus.

  194. And we pray God will bless to us this reading again of his word.

  195. Let's join together again in prayer.

  196. Let's pray.

  197. Our gracious God, our Father in heaven, we have been reading your word and singing your praises.

  198. And as we now call upon you in prayer, we ask that we may be guided again by your Holy Spirit.

  199. The Holy Spirit whose presence and power we require to enlighten our minds in the knowledge of your truth.

  200. And also to guide our thoughts as we speak with you.

  201. As we bring before you our petitions and our thanksgivings.

  202. Our requests.

  203. Lord, we thank you today for this privilege we have once again.

  204. To gather here together to be a worshipping people.

  205. And to be known publicly as a people whose desire it is to worship God.

  206. And to bear testimony to him.

  207. And to bear testimony not only to the fact that he is and exists.

  208. But that he is our God.

  209. That he is our creator and our redeemer.

  210. That he is one to whom we owe our allegiance.

  211. Our very life.

  212. We bless you, Lord, today that as we come before you, so we bring our thanksgivings.

  213. We thank you, Lord, for all that you have been to us since the last time we met here.

  214. Every week that goes by, Lord, your goodness is made known to us in so many ways.

  215. Even throughout the matters in life that we see as ordinary.

  216. Yet we, Lord, I recognize that all the good things we do receive and are familiar with are your gifts to us.

  217. And we thank you today that we can come together to thank you for them.

  218. For there are many people we know in the world in which we live that have to do with so few.

  219. Indeed, sometimes without any of these things, even our basic footsteps.

  220. Help us, Lord, to realize that it is by your blessing that we have them.

  221. By your will that we enjoy them.

  222. And that we are answerable to you.

  223. And so as to give thanks as your word requires.

  224. Bless us, we pray, as we come here together once again round your word.

  225. Bless your word to us and lead us into these avenues of your truth that your word contains.

  226. Help us, we pray, to be mindful of our own native lack of understanding.

  227. Of our need of your spirit to open our minds.

  228. To bless your word to us.

  229. To enable us to increase in our understanding and knowledge of it and of yourself through it.

  230. Help us, Lord, today that we may lay to heart things which we need to know.

  231. And need to apply in all aspects of our lives.

  232. We bless you, Lord, today that you have taken account of all that we need to be in this world.

  233. And all the things that we will meet with in this world.

  234. And your word brings us counsel and teaching against them in relation to them all.

  235. We pray today that we may be thankful that you have remembered us, Lord, in that way.

  236. So as to provide for us this light for our path.

  237. This lamp for our feet.

  238. We pray today that you bless us as a congregation.

  239. Bless us, we pray, in our services of worship.

  240. Bless us in the activities that are related to them.

  241. Bless the children in their Sunday school classes and Bible class.

  242. Bless, too, those who are in tweenies and those who are in creche.

  243. And those who look after them and care for them.

  244. Bless us, we pray, in our homes.

  245. Help us, Lord, there to be faithful to you.

  246. Help us to be in public and in private the same.

  247. And help us to realize, O Lord, that you have given us your word so that we may apply it in all of these different facets of life.

  248. We thank you today, O Lord, for the way that you provide for us in our daily living.

  249. We pray that you would help us to be faithful to you in whatever calling you have called us to work in this world.

  250. And to be known to others as a people who love and value the Lord.

  251. We pray, Lord, for those who, at this time, are anxious over their work.

  252. For those who have lost employment during these difficult times.

  253. We pray that you would be gracious to them and provide for them and for their families.

  254. We pray that you would bless those today who have particular difficulties in their family circles.

  255. Those anxieties over loved ones.

  256. Difficulties, Lord, in coping with these issues themselves.

  257. Those who have problems in themselves, O Lord, of mental health or other types of challenges in life that we need to face.

  258. Lord, bless them all, we pray.

  259. Help us to be supportive to them.

  260. Whether they belong to us as a family or in a congregation or out with it.

  261. Help us always, Lord, to be mindful of the needs of others.

  262. And to bring all as we can to bear upon them in practical help and prayerful remembrance.

  263. We pray, too, for those who mourn the passing of loved ones today in our communities.

  264. In the congregation here, bless them, we pray.

  265. Help them, Lord, as they express their grief.

  266. And as they find the pain of parting.

  267. To be so real, help them, Lord, we pray.

  268. And be with them at this time.

  269. And comfort them and be their portion in life.

  270. We pray, too, Lord, for all those who serve you in public life, in public office.

  271. Remember them before you in our local government.

  272. Bless our local council and councillors and council officers.

  273. Bless, we pray, those who help with the administration.

  274. Help also those who take up responsibilities and duties.

  275. In regard to caring for others in the medical sphere.

  276. Remember, our hospital, our hospice, our care homes, our doctors, our nurses, and all the agencies that help them.

  277. Macmillan nurses and all others, Lord, who go about from day to day in our community.

  278. And seek to bring help to day in our community.

  279. And seek to bring help to those who are in need.

  280. We pray for the work of Crossroads.

  281. We ask that you bless them also.

  282. We pray, too, Lord, for those who are involved with pregnancy crisis ministry.

  283. And we ask that you'd bless them here in our own congregation.

  284. Bless them elsewhere as well.

  285. In a world that takes life, Lord, so casually and many times treats life so cheaply.

  286. Whether it be the life of the unborn or those who are old aged.

  287. Lord, we pray for them.

  288. And we pray for all who have different challenges with themselves.

  289. Whether it be in mental health or other disabilities.

  290. Lord, we ask that you'd bless them.

  291. Bless those who don't have the same faculties as most people have.

  292. The same abilities intellectually or otherwise.

  293. Bless them, we pray.

  294. Bless their families as they seek to continue to give them support and help.

  295. And we ask, Lord, that you would bring them as they come to be.

  296. Many of them familiar with your word.

  297. Bless that to them.

  298. And help them, Lord, we pray, to assimilate that in their own way of life and understanding.

  299. We pray your blessing too for our street pastors as they go out to help those who end up in need, Lord,

  300. at different times of the week, especially in the evenings and weekends.

  301. We pray for our street pastors and for all who help, Lord, in that regard.

  302. We pray that you'd keep them safe and enable them to be of help to those they meet regularly, Lord, each week.

  303. We ask that their ministry may indeed prove to be continually beneficial to many others.

  304. And that especially as they come with opportunities to speak about you and about their own faith.

  305. Bless that, we pray, to those who hear them.

  306. Those who bear witness to their desire to make Christ known, as well as being of practical help to others.

  307. Bless, we pray, our nation at this time.

  308. Bless, we pray, our nation at this time.

  309. We pray, O Lord, that you'd bless our government at this time.

  310. We ask that you'd be with them in Westminster, here in Holyrood.

  311. We commend them to you, not merely because we are required and commanded to do that from your word,

  312. but because, Lord, our heart is burdened that we be led in a way that would be exalting to us in righteousness

  313. and would be pleasing to yourself.

  314. Once again, we pray for those who are seeking office of first minister.

  315. We pray especially for Kate Forbes and her constant Christian testimony and witness.

  316. We pray for our Lord and her family and all the pressures that she has to meet with at this time.

  317. Whatever our political persuasion may be, Lord, we know that we have to pray for your people

  318. and we have to bring them before you, especially when they face such difficulties and trials as she faces in these days.

  319. And so, Lord, whatever the outcome might be, we pray that you would continue to be with her and to assure her of your presence.

  320. Bless us as a church, as a denomination.

  321. Help us, Lord, we pray in all the activity that we engage in, in gospel services, in outreach, in evangelism.

  322. And help us in all the church plants and all the other aspects of ministry that we are engaged in.

  323. Bless those who are training for ministry.

  324. We pray for Scott here with ourselves.

  325. We ask that you would bless him and bless all others with him at this time, O Lord,

  326. who are going through their period of training.

  327. We pray that you would be with them and assure them and make them, Lord, more and more capable and endowed with your Spirit

  328. so as to make known to others the beauty of Christ and the claims of Christ in our society.

  329. Hear us then, we pray now, and continue with us,

  330. pardoning all our sin and cleansing us freely for Jesus' sake.

  331. Amen.

  332. Amen.

  333. Once more, we're going to praise the Lord this time in Psalm 147, 147.

  334. It's in the Sing Psalms version on page 192.

  335. We'll sing verses 1 to 7.

  336. O praise the Lord, how good it is to sing him songs of praise,

  337. how pleasant to give thanks to him for all his gracious ways.

  338. Psalm 147 and verses 1 to 7.

  339. O praise the Lord, how good it is to sing him songs of praise,

  340. and blessed to give thanks to him for all his gracious grace.

  341. The Lord, how good it is to sing from ourp

  342. The Lord, how good it is to sing him ceux- жив in the world.

  343. Who reaches the children of Israel to bring his exiles for whole?

  344. He heals, he heals, he heals, broken hearts, which torches to salvation.

  345. He sets the number of persons and calls them each by name.

  346. Great is our Lord and great in power, his wisdom is profound.

  347. The Lord's substance can be cut out, the wicked to the ground.

  348. Sing to the Lord with thankfulness, with joy his faithful praise.

  349. And with the new shape of the heart, give glory to his name.

  350. Let's turn now to the scripture we read in Daniel chapter 1.

    Daniel 1 chapter mention

  351. Daniel chapter 1, we're looking at the chapter, especially the first seven verses of it.

    Daniel 1 chapter mention

  352. Daniel chapter 1, which we'll call Wisdom for Challenging Times.

    Daniel 1 chapter mention

  353. Now, the historical setting for Daniel, as I'm sure you know, as it says here, is during the days of King Nebuchadnezzar.

  354. This passage is certainly set in that context.

  355. Nebuchadnezzar ruled around about 605 through to 562 years before Christ.

  356. So it's going back a long time.

  357. But at that time, the Babylonians, over which Nebuchadnezzar was king, to which he belonged, was the superpower of the world.

  358. It was really the great powerhouse in the known world of the time.

  359. It had a magnificent city in Babylon.

  360. The hanging gardens of Babylon were the envy of the world.

  361. They were one of the seven wonders of the world at the time.

  362. But through the Bible, Babylon is more than just a geographical location.

  363. And the Babylonians, or Chaldeans, as sometimes they're called, are more than just a reference to an actual people who lived long ago.

  364. Although that is, of course, true.

  365. That's what they were.

  366. In the Bible, Babylon represents all that is contrary to God's kingdom, to God's reign.

  367. Babylon represents evil, corruption against God's people, against God himself, against the known church, if you like, of the time in the people of Israel, Judah.

  368. So, all that you find in the Bible about Babylon and that way of teaching is about powers and forces that are against God and against his people.

  369. That's all the way through until you reach the end of the Bible in Revelation chapters 18 and 19,

    Revelation 18 chapter mention

  370. in the judgment of God bringing us right through to the end of the world,

  371. where Babylon is judged, where Babylon has fallen, and where Babylon is judged by God.

  372. In other words, these powers of evil and corruption and anti-God coalitions of various kinds throughout the centuries,

  373. they are actually brought under the judgment of God at the end of it all.

  374. And the Lamb, Jesus, and his people prevail.

  375. They are the ones whom God shows to have the victory on their side,

  376. because God is on their side and they have his salvation.

  377. In other words, Daniel really is a timeless book in this sense that although it is important that we remember it is talking about history,

  378. it's history with a purpose in the presentation of this Word of God.

  379. It's timeless in the sense that Babylon, if you like, and the powers that Babylon represented, as we've mentioned,

  380. they're active in every generation.

  381. Something to do with Babylon, with the powers of Babylon, with the powers of, if you like, of worldliness,

  382. in whatever form, that's always present to battle against God's people,

  383. to resist the call of God in the gospel,

  384. to try and undermine the church, to try and infiltrate the church,

  385. to try and overthrow the teaching of the Bible,

  386. in whatever ways that's possible for it under God.

  387. And it seeks Babylon's powers.

  388. Babylon seeks to take captive the minds of Christians as well.

  389. Let's remember this.

  390. Because the powers that are represented by Babylon,

  391. the powers of evil and corruption and ungodliness and worldliness,

  392. everything that's opposed to the gospel in every generation,

  393. it wants to take your mind captive and my mind captive,

  394. to take us away from faithfulness to God, from allegiance to God,

  395. and throw our lot in with Babylon and its so-called values.

  396. And it uses ideologies, different types of ideology,

  397. to actually carry out its plan and its purpose.

  398. Institutions, individuals, nations, churches, schools, government systems,

  399. they're all subject to infiltration and the powers and the persuasion of Babylon

  400. in order to try and do more to undermine the gospel of Christ.

  401. And that's why we must see the contents of Daniel and the passage we're looking at today

  402. in that wider perspective, in that spiritual perspective,

  403. that spiritual and moral dimension that Babylon in the Bible represents.

  404. The first thing, I'm going to look mainly at the first point,

  405. which is the king's three-year program.

  406. The three-year program mentioned here that King Nebuchadnezzar set

  407. for these young people that he had brought captive from Jerusalem to Babylon.

  408. This three-year program you'll find in verse 5, this was his purpose.

  409. He assigned in verses 3 to 5 these youths that came

  410. and were skillful in wisdom and knowledge, understanding and learning,

  411. and it was to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans.

  412. They were to be educated for three years and then they were to stand before the king.

  413. So this was a program deliberately set up to try and educate or really re-educate

  414. these young people that had come from Jerusalem to Babylon.

  415. The king's three-year program.

  416. And then more briefly, although it's not unimportant, of course,

  417. because the rest of Daniel deals with it,

  418. God's faithful people in Babylon, in that setting, in those circumstances.

  419. And you can see already how up-to-date Daniel is as we're looking out over the world in which we are placed,

  420. as we're seeing Babylon represented by all the powers and the ideologies

  421. that actually are in conflict with the gospel.

  422. The king's three-year program.

  423. Well, he wanted, first of all, the ablest youths that came from Jerusalem.

  424. He brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his God.

  425. He placed the vessels there.

  426. And then he commanded Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch,

  427. to bring some of the people of Israel,

  428. both of the royal family and of the nobility,

  429. youths without blemish of good appearance,

  430. and skillful in all wisdom,

  431. endowed with knowledge, understanding, and learning.

  432. In other words, he wanted the very best.

  433. He wanted the very best as a potential for the service of Babylon.

  434. He wanted the choice young people of Jerusalem, of Judah,

  435. to come and be in the service of the king of Babylon

  436. and to take up the values of Babylon

  437. and the aims of Babylon and the purpose of Babylon

  438. and, as we'll see, even to come to be identified as Babylonians.

  439. That was his purpose.

  440. And only the best would do to serve the kingdom,

  441. the intentions of Babylon.

  442. Now, you can see in verse 4 there,

  443. youths without blemish of good appearance,

  444. skillful in all wisdom,

  445. endowed with knowledge, understanding, learning,

  446. and competent to stand in the king's palace.

  447. And that actually involves both understanding and communication.

  448. And these two are always important.

  449. Because to the king of Babylon, to the aims of Babylon,

  450. understanding coupled with communication skills

  451. was always going to be an important combination.

  452. And it still is an important combination.

  453. That's why he wanted the best,

  454. those who could understand,

  455. those who could quickly assimilate the teachings of Babylon

  456. and also be able to cogently explain them

  457. or communicate them to the world around them.

  458. That is what Babylon is still aiming to do.

  459. That's why there is today,

  460. in this very building,

  461. an interest in you and in your minds.

  462. An interest on the part of these forces

  463. that oppose the gospel

  464. of these satanic-led powers

  465. that really have in their mind,

  466. even if they would never associate themselves,

  467. of course, with Satan

  468. and with Satan's intentions

  469. and plans and strategies.

  470. Well, the Bible itself tells you all about that.

  471. But here is what is seeking

  472. to bring your mind today captive

  473. and lead your mind away

  474. from the teachings of Scripture,

  475. of the Word of God,

  476. of these principles and values of the gospel.

  477. So, understanding and communicating abilities

  478. are so important to the world,

  479. so important in the world that we live,

  480. so important to Babylon,

  481. so important to all the ideologies

  482. that oppose the gospel.

  483. But this is the thing.

  484. They are also important

  485. to those who support the gospel,

  486. to those who promote the gospel.

  487. That's why our prayer is

  488. that God will raise up

  489. people of understanding

  490. and able to communicate the gospel.

  491. That's why we have the likes of Scott

  492. as a trainee minister in training

  493. and others like him

  494. in different congregations

  495. throughout the country.

  496. That's why we're thrilled

  497. when God calls people

  498. to actually come to minister the gospel

  499. by the preaching of the gospel,

  500. but also, like many of yourselves,

  501. to be living witnesses to God

  502. in your own place of work,

  503. whether it's in education

  504. or wherever it is.

  505. Learning and competence

  506. in communicating those principles

  507. that have to do with righteousness

  508. and truth and integrity

  509. are so important.

  510. They are crucial to the aims of Babylon,

  511. but they're also crucial

  512. in resisting and overcoming

  513. all that Babylon wants to bring about.

  514. That's why you must give your mind

  515. and I must give my mind

  516. to Christ,

  517. to the teachings of the Bible,

  518. to the Holy Spirit of God,

  519. to these things

  520. that the Bible itself tells us

  521. are absolutely crucial

  522. and foundational

  523. if we are to be

  524. the kind of people

  525. that bear witness to God

  526. in this world.

  527. The world needs you

  528. and the world needs

  529. that particular witness,

  530. that particular understanding

  531. and communication

  532. of God's truth.

  533. But secondly,

  534. he didn't just want

  535. the ablest youths,

  536. he wanted them

  537. to be turned into Chaldeans.

  538. And three points

  539. under this briefly.

  540. First of all,

  541. you'll see in verse 4,

  542. the end of the verse there,

  543. to teach them

  544. the literature

  545. and language

  546. of the Chaldeans.

  547. He wanted them

  548. to be skillful

  549. in both the literature

  550. and language

  551. of the Chaldeans.

  552. In other words,

  553. this was a curriculum

  554. with purpose,

  555. a curriculum

  556. with a specific purpose.

  557. He wanted to turn them

  558. from being Jews

  559. or being associated

  560. with Jewishness

  561. and turn them

  562. into Chaldeans

  563. effectively and practically.

  564. He wanted them

  565. to think of themselves

  566. no longer as a people

  567. of Judah,

  568. but a people of Chaldea,

  569. of Babylon,

  570. who had taken up

  571. the aims and the purposes

  572. and the intentions

  573. of Babylon.

  574. He wanted to erode

  575. their Jewishness

  576. as they developed

  577. an allegiance

  578. to Babylon.

  579. See how up-to-date

  580. that is?

  581. You see how relevant

  582. that is to the world

  583. in which you and I

  584. are placed today?

  585. Where education

  586. is so, so important,

  587. but where education

  588. sadly all too often

  589. drifts into indoctrination

  590. because that's what

  591. Babylon was about.

  592. He wasn't there

  593. just to educate

  594. their minds

  595. so as to give them

  596. different things

  597. to compare.

  598. He was there

  599. to bring their minds

  600. over to the business

  601. and the intentions

  602. and the identity

  603. of Babylon.

  604. And Babylon

  605. is still at it.

  606. That's why we need

  607. to pray for our teachers.

  608. Not just for the

  609. Christian teachers,

  610. but especially

  611. our Christian teachers.

  612. Because they are facing

  613. from the top,

  614. from government

  615. intentions

  616. and government

  617. provided

  618. ideologies,

  619. they are actually

  620. infiltrating

  621. the education

  622. of our children

  623. and in some parts

  624. of the country

  625. at least.

  626. Our children,

  627. even at their youngest

  628. years in primary,

  629. are being subjected

  630. to teaching

  631. that really belongs

  632. only in the adult

  633. field, sadly.

  634. That is Babylon

  635. at work.

  636. seeking to win

  637. young minds

  638. over to these

  639. ideologies

  640. in order to provide

  641. very skillful

  642. communicators

  643. for that particular

  644. type of ideology

  645. or teaching

  646. to actually spread

  647. that throughout

  648. the world.

  649. Now you can see

  650. how dangerous

  651. that is.

  652. You can see

  653. how important

  654. it is to pray

  655. against more

  656. infiltration

  657. of that type

  658. into our system

  659. of education.

  660. Where all kinds

  661. of ideologies

  662. are seen

  663. as acceptable

  664. and where,

  665. for some at least,

  666. our very youngest

  667. children have to be

  668. subjected to these

  669. things even from

  670. their youngest days.

  671. See,

  672. that's Babylon

  673. at work.

  674. That's King

  675. Nebuchadnezzar's

  676. three-year program

  677. being rolled out

  678. in our society

  679. to take minds

  680. captive

  681. in order that

  682. they then serve

  683. the values

  684. and the aims

  685. of Babylon.

  686. to erode,

  687. to normalize,

  688. to normalize

  689. what the Bible

  690. says is not

  691. acceptable,

  692. is ungodly,

  693. is contrary

  694. to righteousness,

  695. to uprightness,

  696. to truthfulness,

  697. and in their

  698. place

  699. to put the

  700. values of

  701. Babylon.

  702. Friends,

  703. please pray

  704. for our

  705. teachers.

  706. Pray for our

  707. education authority.

  708. Pray for that

  709. throughout the land.

  710. Pray for all

  711. our schools

  712. where there are

  713. Christian teachers

  714. placed

  715. Christians

  716. are still

  717. concerned

  718. at having

  719. or being

  720. called upon

  721. to teach

  722. things which

  723. they themselves

  724. find unacceptable.

  725. Pray for

  726. Christian schools

  727. wherever they

  728. are.

  729. Pray for those

  730. who sincerely

  731. intend to

  732. bring children

  733. up in the

  734. values of

  735. Christ.

  736. Pray for

  737. parents.

  738. Pray for

  739. parents who

  740. have to actually

  741. face this with

  742. their children

  743. from day to

  744. day.

  745. when they

  746. come home

  747. from school,

  748. even in

  749. primary school,

  750. and say,

  751. the teacher

  752. today was

  753. teaching us

  754. to ask

  755. questions about

  756. ourselves and

  757. who we are.

  758. Are we really

  759. male or

  760. female?

  761. Are we a

  762. boy?

  763. Am I a

  764. girl?

  765. That's what's

  766. going on in

  767. some of our

  768. schools throughout

  769. our land.

  770. That's where

  771. children's minds

  772. are being messed

  773. with.

  774. That's Babylon

  775. at work.

  776. We have to be

  777. aware of that

  778. and pray over it

  779. and also,

  780. as we bring it

  781. before the

  782. Lord, ask the

  783. Lord to bring

  784. a change around.

  785. So there's the

  786. education that

  787. sadly sometimes

  788. becomes

  789. indoctrination.

  790. There's secondly

  791. incentives.

  792. You see,

  793. verse 5,

  794. he gave them

  795. the incentives,

  796. he assigned

  797. them a daily

  798. portion of the

  799. food that the

  800. king ate and

  801. the wine that

  802. he drank.

  803. In other words,

  804. they were made

  805. to feel really

  806. special.

  807. They were singled

  808. out from the

  809. others as

  810. favorites of the

  811. king.

  812. They were made

  813. to feel that

  814. they really

  815. should surely

  816. serve this

  817. very kind

  818. king,

  819. this person

  820. that brought

  821. all of these

  822. things to them

  823. and made them

  824. feel so special

  825. compared to

  826. others.

  827. The design was

  828. to make them

  829. feel advantaged,

  830. to make them

  831. feel special,

  832. to make them

  833. feel this is

  834. really the right

  835. way.

  836. We're surely

  837. not wrong in

  838. following the

  839. king's requirements

  840. and taking up

  841. this teaching

  842. that he wants

  843. to give us

  844. of the things

  845. of the

  846. Chaldeans.

  847. And you can

  848. see how similar

  849. that is to

  850. the idea

  851. today that

  852. if you follow

  853. the Christian

  854. way, if you're

  855. especially open

  856. about being a

  857. Christian, you

  858. can't possibly

  859. get on in the

  860. world if that's

  861. what you commit

  862. yourself to.

  863. That's the

  864. ideology of

  865. Babylon.

  866. That's what

  867. Babylon will say

  868. to you.

  869. That's what

  870. worldliness will

  871. say to you.

  872. It will say,

  873. if you really

  874. want to get on

  875. in the world

  876. and progress

  877. your life and

  878. make something

  879. of a career

  880. of it and

  881. get promotion

  882. in whatever

  883. field you're

  884. working, you've

  885. got to take

  886. on the world

  887. as of equal

  888. validity and

  889. equal value

  890. to the Christian

  891. life.

  892. You just have

  893. to embrace

  894. that.

  895. And we're

  896. being told by

  897. certain ideologies

  898. today, it's

  899. not enough

  900. in the old

  901. style tolerance

  902. of just saying,

  903. well, I don't

  904. agree with that,

  905. but I leave you

  906. your freedom to

  907. believe that and

  908. to live that way

  909. of life if that's

  910. your choice.

  911. I don't agree

  912. with it.

  913. But I don't

  914. agree with

  915. persecuting you

  916. for it.

  917. Now, the new

  918. ideology, the new

  919. tolerance really

  920. says, I think I

  921. mentioned this

  922. last week, it's

  923. not enough to

  924. say, well, I

  925. don't agree with

  926. it, but you're

  927. free to follow

  928. it if that's

  929. your choice.

  930. The new

  931. ideology says,

  932. you must see

  933. this as of

  934. equal value to

  935. your Christianity.

  936. You must take

  937. it and celebrate

  938. it the way you

  939. celebrate your

  940. Christianity.

  941. That's Babylon

  942. at work.

  943. The idea that

  944. you really must

  945. embrace the

  946. world in every

  947. facet of the

  948. world in its

  949. thinking and in

  950. its behavior.

  951. If you really

  952. want to get on

  953. in the world,

  954. that's what you

  955. have to do.

  956. And Daniel

  957. teaches us

  958. otherwise.

  959. Daniel, as we'll

  960. see, teaches

  961. that God has

  962. to come first.

  963. That God is the

  964. one who must,

  965. at all times,

  966. all times must

  967. have allegiance

  968. to Him.

  969. And that, of

  970. course, doesn't

  971. mean hating

  972. others.

  973. That doesn't

  974. mean being

  975. obsessed with

  976. and taken up

  977. with phobias,

  978. the way the

  979. world actually

  980. presents it.

  981. Phobic this

  982. and phobic

  983. that.

  984. We're called

  985. upon to love

  986. people, to

  987. love people

  988. whatever their

  989. ideology, to

  990. love people

  991. whatever difference

  992. there may be in

  993. their way of

  994. life throughout

  995. Christian life.

  996. love.

  997. But love is

  998. not that sort

  999. of wobbly

  1000. thing that the

  1001. world presents

  1002. to you.

  1003. Love is love.

  1004. Love is

  1005. primarily

  1006. faithfulness to

  1007. God.

  1008. A love for

  1009. God.

  1010. A love for

  1011. His principles.

  1012. For His truth.

  1013. For His values.

  1014. For His people.

  1015. And so we

  1016. really resist

  1017. the idea that

  1018. to get on

  1019. in the world

  1020. you have to

  1021. embrace the

  1022. world.

  1023. God and

  1024. its values.

  1025. Daniel is

  1026. going to

  1027. teach us

  1028. that.

  1029. Again,

  1030. teach us

  1031. you that as

  1032. you work

  1033. your way

  1034. through the

  1035. book of

  1036. Daniel.

  1037. And especially

  1038. these opening

  1039. chapters.

  1040. So there's

  1041. education.

  1042. There's incentives

  1043. that are given

  1044. for them to

  1045. actually throw

  1046. their lot in

  1047. with Babylon.

  1048. But there's

  1049. thirdly,

  1050. identity.

  1051. Look at

  1052. verse 7.

  1053. Among

  1054. these were

  1055. Daniel,

  1056. Hananiah,

  1057. Mishael,

  1058. and Azariah,

  1059. tribe of Judah.

  1060. And the

  1061. chief of the

  1062. eunuchs gave

  1063. them names.

  1064. Daniel he

  1065. called

  1066. Belteshazzar,

  1067. Hananiah he

  1068. called

  1069. Shadrach,

  1070. Mishael he

  1071. called

  1072. Meshach,

  1073. and Azariah

  1074. Abednego.

  1075. What's that

  1076. about?

  1077. Is that just

  1078. saying,

  1079. well,

  1080. this is just

  1081. a change of

  1082. names and

  1083. nothing more?

  1084. Of course

  1085. it's not.

  1086. It fits

  1087. into the

  1088. teaching,

  1089. the theology

  1090. of Daniel.

  1091. And what

  1092. it's saying

  1093. to us is

  1094. part of

  1095. the strategy

  1096. of Babylon

  1097. is actually

  1098. to give

  1099. you an

  1100. identity

  1101. associated

  1102. with being

  1103. a Babylonian.

  1104. This was

  1105. a deliberate

  1106. part of

  1107. the strategy

  1108. because he

  1109. was concerned

  1110. that the

  1111. more they

  1112. forgot their

  1113. own native

  1114. names given

  1115. to them as

  1116. Jews,

  1117. and you

  1118. notice these

  1119. names,

  1120. as they

  1121. often did

  1122. in Judah

  1123. and Jewish

  1124. names,

  1125. had some

  1126. element to

  1127. do with

  1128. God in

  1129. them.

  1130. Daniel,

  1131. it has

  1132. the word

  1133. El,

  1134. the same

  1135. word

  1136. Mishael,

  1137. Mishach,

  1138. Azariah,

  1139. the name

  1140. Yahweh

  1141. or Jehovah,

  1142. and built

  1143. into these

  1144. Jewish names

  1145. you have

  1146. something to

  1147. do with

  1148. God,

  1149. something to

  1150. do with

  1151. a relationship

  1152. with God,

  1153. something to

  1154. do with

  1155. what God

  1156. is or

  1157. who God

  1158. is and

  1159. what he

  1160. is to

  1161. you.

  1162. They're

  1163. substituted

  1164. by thoroughly

  1165. pagan names,

  1166. and the hope

  1167. is that as

  1168. they forget

  1169. the significance

  1170. of their

  1171. Jewish name,

  1172. their Jewish

  1173. name that's

  1174. rooted in

  1175. the name

  1176. of God

  1177. himself,

  1178. so the

  1179. more they

  1180. will take

  1181. up these

  1182. pagan names,

  1183. the more

  1184. they will

  1185. be associated

  1186. with Babylon

  1187. and being

  1188. Chaldeans.

  1189. That's the

  1190. strategy.

  1191. That's the

  1192. three-year

  1193. program the

  1194. king set

  1195. for them.

  1196. That's the

  1197. aim to

  1198. gradually

  1199. incorporate

  1200. them so

  1201. that they

  1202. come effectively

  1203. to be

  1204. Chaldeans.

  1205. That's what

  1206. the world

  1207. wants you

  1208. to be.

  1209. That's what

  1210. the world

  1211. is calling

  1212. you to

  1213. today.

  1214. That's

  1215. what

  1216. worldliness

  1217. has as

  1218. its

  1219. intentions

  1220. through

  1221. whatever

  1222. ideology

  1223. that

  1224. wants

  1225. you

  1226. to

  1227. lose

  1228. sight

  1229. of

  1230. your

  1231. identity

  1232. as

  1233. a

  1234. Christian.

  1235. Where is

  1236. the

  1237. Christian's

  1238. identity?

  1239. What is it

  1240. that identifies

  1241. the Christian?

  1242. It's not

  1243. your name

  1244. given by

  1245. baptism.

  1246. It's not

  1247. your name

  1248. given by

  1249. parents,

  1250. important though

  1251. these may

  1252. be,

  1253. precious though

  1254. these may

  1255. be.

  1256. What

  1257. identifies

  1258. you as

  1259. a

  1260. Christian

  1261. is what

  1262. you are

  1263. in

  1264. Christ.

  1265. And

  1266. what you

  1267. are in

  1268. Christ means

  1269. what you

  1270. are to

  1271. God and

  1272. what God

  1273. is to

  1274. you.

  1275. That's

  1276. your

  1277. identity.

  1278. That's

  1279. who you

  1280. are as

  1281. a

  1282. Christian.

  1283. And

  1284. that's

  1285. who the

  1286. world

  1287. must

  1288. see.

  1289. You

  1290. are.

  1291. A

  1292. person who

  1293. belongs to

  1294. God and

  1295. to whom

  1296. by grace

  1297. this God

  1298. belongs as

  1299. your

  1300. Savior,

  1301. as your

  1302. King,

  1303. and

  1304. whatever

  1305. Nebuchad

  1306. and

  1307. Ezra

  1308. arrive on

  1309. the scene.

  1310. That's

  1311. the aim

  1312. of the

  1313. three-year

  1314. program.

  1315. He wanted

  1316. the

  1317. ableist

  1318. for

  1319. himself.

  1320. He

  1321. wanted to

  1322. educate

  1323. them

  1324. with the

  1325. element

  1326. of

  1327. indoctrination.

  1328. He

  1329. wanted to

  1330. give them

  1331. incentives.

  1332. He gave

  1333. them incentives

  1334. to help

  1335. them on

  1336. that way.

  1337. And he

  1338. changed their

  1339. identity,

  1340. at least

  1341. by name,

  1342. so that

  1343. gradually

  1344. they'd

  1345. come to

  1346. see

  1347. themselves,

  1348. no longer

  1349. us people

  1350. of Judah,

  1351. but people

  1352. of Babylon.

  1353. What's the

  1354. counter to

  1355. that?

  1356. Well,

  1357. this is

  1358. our final

  1359. point.

  1360. The second

  1361. point,

  1362. briefly,

  1363. has to

  1364. do with

  1365. God's

  1366. faithful

  1367. people,

  1368. because as

  1369. the chapter

  1370. goes on,

  1371. you can

  1372. see how

  1373. God gave

  1374. Daniel

  1375. wisdom,

  1376. along with

  1377. his companions,

  1378. to actually

  1379. not just

  1380. to offset,

  1381. but to

  1382. overcome

  1383. the strategy

  1384. of Babylon

  1385. and this

  1386. three-year

  1387. program.

  1388. In other

  1389. words,

  1390. what you

  1391. really find

  1392. in the

  1393. chapter,

  1394. as throughout

  1395. the book,

  1396. in fact,

  1397. is that the

  1398. main figure,

  1399. as always

  1400. really in the

  1401. Bible,

  1402. the main

  1403. figure is

  1404. not Daniel,

  1405. it's not

  1406. his companions,

  1407. it's actually

  1408. God.

  1409. God gave

  1410. Daniel,

  1411. he resolved

  1412. that he

  1413. wouldn't defile

  1414. himself,

  1415. God gave

  1416. Daniel favor

  1417. and compassion,

  1418. verse 9,

  1419. in the sight

  1420. of the

  1421. chief of

  1422. the

  1423. eunuchs.

  1424. Where did

  1425. Daniel get

  1426. his wisdom

  1427. from?

  1428. It wasn't

  1429. from the

  1430. ideology of

  1431. the Babylonians

  1432. or of his

  1433. own ingenuity,

  1434. it was the

  1435. wisdom that

  1436. was God

  1437. given.

  1438. God gave

  1439. this to

  1440. Daniel,

  1441. he gave

  1442. him favor.

  1443. God

  1444. arranged it

  1445. that the

  1446. chief of

  1447. the eunuchs

  1448. actually went

  1449. along with

  1450. Daniel's

  1451. strategy,

  1452. counter to

  1453. the strategy

  1454. of the

  1455. king of

  1456. Babylon.

  1457. And of

  1458. course we

  1459. know how

  1460. that ended

  1461. up.

  1462. And he

  1463. showed himself

  1464. superior to

  1465. all the

  1466. rest,

  1467. to all the

  1468. people that

  1469. belonged to

  1470. Babylon who

  1471. ate the

  1472. king's food.

  1473. Daniel and

  1474. his companions

  1475. turned out to

  1476. be ten times

  1477. more superior

  1478. than they

  1479. were.

  1480. You see,

  1481. God's favor,

  1482. Joseph proved

  1483. it before,

  1484. didn't he?

  1485. Daniel proves

  1486. it here.

  1487. Many others

  1488. have proved

  1489. it down

  1490. through the

  1491. years,

  1492. that God's

  1493. favor is

  1494. of so much

  1495. more value

  1496. than the

  1497. favor of

  1498. the world.

  1499. God's

  1500. favor is

  1501. the chief

  1502. thing in

  1503. your life,

  1504. surely.

  1505. To know

  1506. that you're

  1507. living a

  1508. life that's

  1509. pleasing to

  1510. God,

  1511. not because

  1512. it's a

  1513. perfect life

  1514. though you'd

  1515. want it to

  1516. be,

  1517. not because

  1518. it's a

  1519. better life

  1520. than other

  1521. people live,

  1522. not because

  1523. you see

  1524. yourself as

  1525. superior to

  1526. others,

  1527. but because

  1528. you know

  1529. this is what

  1530. God requires

  1531. of you.

  1532. That is your

  1533. privilege to

  1534. live as a

  1535. Christian life,

  1536. as a

  1537. Christian in

  1538. life.

  1539. That is your

  1540. privilege to

  1541. serve God,

  1542. your privilege

  1543. to be openly

  1544. on His side

  1545. because there

  1546. are so many

  1547. openly against

  1548. Him.

  1549. To have

  1550. God's favor,

  1551. friends,

  1552. is the most

  1553. important thing

  1554. in the world

  1555. for you and

  1556. for me.

  1557. To know

  1558. that you

  1559. have that,

  1560. to show

  1561. openly that

  1562. you have

  1563. that.

  1564. Nothing's

  1565. more important

  1566. than that,

  1567. that you

  1568. have the

  1569. favor of

  1570. God upon

  1571. your life.

  1572. And these

  1573. were people

  1574. of principle

  1575. in other

  1576. words.

  1577. It wasn't

  1578. just the

  1579. fact that

  1580. God gave

  1581. them this

  1582. favor,

  1583. that God

  1584. opened up

  1585. the way

  1586. for them,

  1587. that God

  1588. endowed them

  1589. with all of

  1590. these abilities,

  1591. which He of

  1592. course undoubtedly

  1593. did.

  1594. But they

  1595. themselves were

  1596. people of

  1597. principle.

  1598. They were

  1599. committed to

  1600. God,

  1601. by the grace

  1602. of God,

  1603. by the blessing

  1604. of God,

  1605. yes,

  1606. but they were

  1607. still themselves

  1608. committed to

  1609. God,

  1610. to the ways

  1611. of God,

  1612. to serving

  1613. God,

  1614. to be true

  1615. to God.

  1616. And that's

  1617. why Daniel

  1618. in chapter 2,

  1619. just flick

  1620. forward for a

  1621. minute,

  1622. chapter 2,

  1623. verse 48.

  1624. As they

  1625. came to

  1626. Nebuchadnezzar

  1627. following the

  1628. interpretation

  1629. of his

  1630. dream,

  1631. which none

  1632. of his

  1633. own

  1634. mystery men

  1635. were able

  1636. to do,

  1637. then the

  1638. king gave

  1639. Daniel high

  1640. honors and

  1641. many great

  1642. gifts,

  1643. and made

  1644. him ruler

  1645. over the

  1646. whole province

  1647. of Babylon,

  1648. and chief

  1649. prefect over

  1650. all the wise

  1651. men of

  1652. Babylon.

  1653. See what's

  1654. happened?

  1655. Here's a man

  1656. who's been

  1657. faithful to

  1658. God,

  1659. who has

  1660. made known

  1661. his allegiance

  1662. to God,

  1663. who has

  1664. not stepped

  1665. back from

  1666. being a

  1667. man of

  1668. Judah in

  1669. the captivity

  1670. of Babylon.

  1671. And yet what

  1672. happens?

  1673. The king of

  1674. Babylon promotes

  1675. him.

  1676. He sees that

  1677. he has special

  1678. qualities that

  1679. none of his

  1680. own people

  1681. have.

  1682. And not

  1683. only that,

  1684. but he made

  1685. a request of

  1686. the king,

  1687. and he appointed

  1688. Shadrach,

  1689. Meshach,

  1690. and Abednego

  1691. over the

  1692. affairs of

  1693. Babylon.

  1694. But Daniel

  1695. remained in

  1696. the king's

  1697. court.

  1698. Now chapter

  1699. 3 tells you

  1700. the difficulties

  1701. associated with

  1702. that.

  1703. There's the

  1704. furnace.

  1705. There's the

  1706. fiery furnace.

  1707. There's all

  1708. the intimidation,

  1709. all the

  1710. antagonism,

  1711. all the

  1712. suffering,

  1713. all the

  1714. persecution.

  1715. Nevertheless,

  1716. you'd rather be

  1717. in that fiery

  1718. furnace with

  1719. the fourth

  1720. man, the

  1721. figure of

  1722. a son of

  1723. the gods,

  1724. a figure of

  1725. God himself

  1726. with his

  1727. people through

  1728. the fires of

  1729. persecution.

  1730. You'd rather be

  1731. there than be

  1732. in the service

  1733. of the king

  1734. of Babylon,

  1735. whose only

  1736. reward is at

  1737. the end of

  1738. the day,

  1739. death,

  1740. and open

  1741. shame before

  1742. God.

  1743. One of the

  1744. commentators,

  1745. a small book,

  1746. a brief

  1747. commentary on

  1748. Daniel by

  1749. D.S.

  1750. Russell,

  1751. and he

  1752. puts it this

  1753. way when he

  1754. speaks about

  1755. these,

  1756. writing about

  1757. these young

  1758. people of

  1759. Judah as

  1760. people of

  1761. principle.

  1762. He said,

  1763. to act on

  1764. principle is

  1765. sometimes an

  1766. expression of

  1767. stubbornness and

  1768. pig-headedness,

  1769. but that is no

  1770. excuse for

  1771. denigrating the

  1772. act itself.

  1773. People of

  1774. principle find

  1775. greater favor

  1776. with God than

  1777. people of

  1778. property.

  1779. They are

  1780. prepared to

  1781. pay the

  1782. price for the

  1783. stand they

  1784. take.

  1785. They accept

  1786. the penalty

  1787. of being

  1788. the odd

  1789. man out.

  1790. They are

  1791. willing to

  1792. be counted

  1793. among the

  1794. dissenters and

  1795. the dissidents,

  1796. whatever the

  1797. outcome may

  1798. be.

  1799. When principle

  1800. ceases to

  1801. matter,

  1802. then religion,

  1803. truth,

  1804. honesty,

  1805. and integrity

  1806. are all

  1807. at risk.

  1808. People of

  1809. principle,

  1810. in other

  1811. words,

  1812. people who

  1813. are true to

  1814. God,

  1815. come what

  1816. may as

  1817. Daniel himself

  1818. and his

  1819. companions

  1820. prove to

  1821. be.

  1822. And it

  1823. does give

  1824. the lie,

  1825. doesn't it,

  1826. to the

  1827. allegation,

  1828. to the

  1829. suggestion

  1830. that

  1831. Christian

  1832. people,

  1833. people who

  1834. believe the

  1835. Bible,

  1836. will never

  1837. make suitable

  1838. leaders for

  1839. a nation.

  1840. Daniel gives

  1841. the lie to

  1842. that.

  1843. Allegiance to

  1844. God,

  1845. publicly and

  1846. openly,

  1847. does not

  1848. make a

  1849. person unsuitable

  1850. to lead a

  1851. nation,

  1852. or a

  1853. people,

  1854. or a

  1855. church.

  1856. Indeed,

  1857. put it the

  1858. other way,

  1859. surely there's

  1860. nothing more

  1861. important than

  1862. to be a

  1863. person of

  1864. integrity,

  1865. a man or

  1866. woman of

  1867. God,

  1868. who will

  1869. be true

  1870. to God,

  1871. and will

  1872. lead people

  1873. in the

  1874. right direction.

  1875. May God

  1876. bless these

  1877. thoughts on

  1878. his word to

  1879. us.

  1880. Let's now

  1881. conclude by

  1882. singing to

  1883. God's praise

  1884. from Psalm

  1885. 90.

  1886. Psalm number

  1887. 90,

  1888. that's in the

  1889. Sing Psalms

  1890. version of

  1891. Psalm 90,

  1892. singing the

  1893. final three

  1894. verses,

  1895. verses 13

  1896. to 17.

  1897. Return,

  1898. O Lord,

  1899. how long

  1900. will you

  1901. delay?

  1902. Have mercy

  1903. on your

  1904. servants,

  1905. Lord,

  1906. we pray.

  1907. O satisfy

  1908. us with

  1909. your love

  1910. always,

  1911. that we

  1912. may sing

  1913. rejoicing

  1914. all our

  1915. days.

  1916. Verses

  1919. Psalm 90

  1922. Amen.

  1923. Amen.

1932. Have mercy on you, serenity, Lord, we pray.

1933. O satisfy us with pure love always,

1934. That we may sing rejoicing on our day.

1935. When place of love, affliction with us, God,

1936. In joy for all the years you may not die.

1937. Till all your strength and the earth is we shown,

1939. Now may the favor of Almighty Lord,

1944. Now may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,
