  1. We'll begin our worship by singing to God's praise.

  2. We're going to sing in Psalm 20, in the Scottish Psalter.

  3. Psalm 20, we're singing verse 1 to verse 7, the tune is Kilmarnock.

  4. Jehovah, hear thee in the day when trouble he does send,

  5. and let the name of Jacob's God thee from all ill defend.

  6. Psalm speaks about the help we get from the Lord,

  7. and in verse 7 we're reminded of how some people put confidence in horses.

  8. In chariots, some put confidence in some horses thrust upon.

  9. That speaks of a time when people looked to the help of nations and armies around them,

  10. that they would support them in their time of need.

  11. But it says, but we remember, will the name of our Lord God alone.

  12. We're reminded there to put our hope and our trust and confidence in God alone.

  13. So let's sing verse 1 to verse 7 to God's praise.

  14. Jehovah, hear thee in the day when trouble he does send,

  15. And let the name of Jacob's God

  16. The prophet will defend

  17. O let him help send the mother

  18. Out of his sanctuary

  19. From Zion his own glory

  20. Let him give strength to thee

  21. Let him be ever all I give

  22. I'll set thy sacrifice

  23. Grant me thy heart's wish

  24. And fulfill thy thoughts

  25. And counsel wise

  26. In thy salvation we will join

  27. In our cross name we will

  28. His play of others

  29. And the Lord thy players all fulfill

  30. Now know why God his kingdom say

  31. He from his holy hand

  32. Will hear him when the saving strength

  33. By his own right hand

  34. In the chariot some good confidence

  35. Some horses trust upon

  36. That we remember

  37. Will the name

  38. Of our Lord God alone

  39. Let's bow our heads in a word of prayer

  40. Let us pray

  41. Lord our gracious God

  42. We do thank you for your word

  43. And for the great privilege it is

  44. To be able to sing praise to you

  45. That you are the one who we can come

  46. And call upon at this time

  47. And indeed any time

  48. Be it day or night Lord

  49. We thank you that you are the one

  50. Who is able to hear us

  51. When we cry in our trouble

  52. And we thank you that it is under your name

  53. That we are able to find refuge

  54. That we are able to find protection

  55. And we know Lord that we all need you

  56. We are all a people who are

  57. Perishing as your word says

  58. We are all a people who have

  59. Within us Lord that knowledge

  60. That our time in this world

  61. Is but passing by so quickly

  62. You are reminded to us Lord

  63. So often

  64. When we hear of people passing

  65. In young age

  66. When we hear of so many things

  67. That happen around us

  68. In our own lives and experience

  69. When we see what is taking place

  70. Throughout the world

  71. We are reminded of

  72. A people perishing always

  73. But we thank you that your word

  74. Reminds us too

  75. That there is life through you

  76. That although our time in this world

  77. May be short

  78. That for each of us

  79. There is a reminder of an eternity

  80. Before us

  81. An unending age

  82. An experience for which

  83. We all must prepare

  84. For your word reminds us

  85. To be ready

  86. To be prepared for that day

  87. A day when the Lord is coming

  88. To judge a people

  89. To judge all people

  90. And we know that it is only

  91. Through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ

  92. That we are ready for that day

  93. And so we pray Lord

  94. That you will help us

  95. To find our refuge in you

  96. To find in the Lord Jesus Christ

  97. The one who is able

  98. To take away our sin

  99. The one who is able to cleanse us

  100. The one who is able

  101. To keep us from stumbling

  102. And we pray Lord

  103. That even this night

  104. As we come together

  105. As we think of ourselves

  106. And as we think of all

  107. That's going on around us

  108. That you will help us

  109. All to see Jesus

  110. Help us all to know him

  111. And through your word

  112. And by your spirit

  113. As we once again come and hear

  114. Your word speaking to us

  115. Help us that it will not

  116. Pass over us

  117. Or not just pass through us

  118. But that it will take root

  119. That it will take root

  120. In our hearts

  121. And that it will help us

  122. To come

  123. And know what it is

  124. To be a people of faith

  125. And to be built up

  126. In the faith

  127. And so may you be with us

  128. In our time of worship

  129. And be with all

  130. Who gather as we do

  131. To praise your name

  132. And we do thank you

  133. As always Lord

  134. That from the rising of the sun

  135. To its setting

  136. That your name is praised

  137. Throughout the world

  138. We marvel at the situations

  139. Where your name is praised

  140. We thank you Lord

  141. For so many nations

  142. Of the world

  143. So many people

  144. So many tribes

  145. And tongues

  146. All connected by your name

  147. The name that is above

  148. Every name

  149. We thank you for brothers

  150. And sisters around the world

  151. We thank you that we are one

  152. In Christ Jesus

  153. And we pray Lord

  154. That you will help us

  155. To be united

  156. And bound together as one

  157. That all our differences

  158. All our different ways

  159. Of looking at things

  160. All the differences of opinion

  161. That might exist

  162. Even among your own people

  163. That we will be all agreed

  164. In one thing

  165. That salvation belongs to God

  166. And that salvation is found

  167. In the Lord Jesus Christ

  168. And so may your name

  169. Be glorified far and wide

  170. May you draw sinners to you

  171. Even anew this day

  172. May they be rejoicing in heaven

  173. Over sinners being saved

  174. We pray that even for ourselves here

  175. Lord that the heavens

  176. Would rejoice this night

  177. As people's hearts would be opened

  178. As they would receive by grace

  179. The Lord Jesus Christ

  180. As they would know him

  181. As only he can be known

  182. Through your word

  183. And by your spirit

  184. That we would come to know him

  185. Even more personally

  186. And even more intimately

  187. That we would weep over our sins

  188. That then we would rejoice

  189. In the goodness of God

  190. And in the forgiveness of our sins

  191. Through faith

  192. And so Lord

  193. May you bless us in our time

  194. And hear our prayers

  195. As we offer them up

  196. Hear our prayers

  197. For our people here

  198. And belonging to us

  199. We know Lord

  200. That the troubles of this world

  201. Are many

  202. And how many need you

  203. In different ways this night

  204. How many need your help

  205. In times of illness

  206. How many people need you

  207. In times of grief and sorrow

  208. How many people who need you

  209. In times of fear

  210. And anxiety and worry

  211. We know all around us

  212. That the troubles of this world

  213. Are many

  214. But we thank you

  215. For the great gift

  216. And the power of prayer

  217. And so may you surround our people

  218. May you be with them

  219. In all their different needs

  220. Young, old, middle-aged alike

  221. That all of our needs

  222. Would be met by you

  223. For you know them each one

  224. You know every home

  225. Where there are tears being wept

  226. Even at this time

  227. You know every home

  228. Where there is sorrow and sadness

  229. You know every home

  230. Where there is longing

  231. Longing to know you

  232. Longing to be among your people

  233. Longing for help and support

  234. In so many different ways

  235. And Lord, teach us and help us

  236. To love one another

  237. Teach us to get to know one another

  238. To pray for one another as we should

  239. To encourage one another

  240. To help one another

  241. Lord, we pray that you will surround us

  242. And build us up together

  243. As a people

  244. For as your word says

  245. We are one body

  246. Of many parts

  247. And when one part hurts

  248. The rest of the body

  249. Is affected as well

  250. And so we pray, Lord

  251. For all our pains

  252. And all our sorrows

  253. Oh Lord, that you will comfort and help

  254. But we thank you too

  255. That there is reason

  256. For rejoicing in you

  257. That you are the God

  258. Who is at work

  259. That you are the God

  260. Who is building his church

  261. That you are the God

  262. Who will not be overcome

  263. And so we rejoice, Lord

  264. In your kingdom

  265. A kingdom that is coming with power

  266. And we thank you

  267. That throughout the world

  268. That you are bearing fruit

  269. And we pray for our own nation

  270. At this time

  271. That in the troubles

  272. That we see around us

  273. You would turn us towards you

  274. That our nation would again

  275. Bear fruit for you

  276. Bear fruit from the top

  277. Top of our society

  278. All the way down

  279. From those who rule

  280. And govern over us, Lord

  281. To our councils

  282. To our homes

  283. And our families

  284. All around us

  285. To our workplaces

  286. And throughout our communities

  287. Far and wide

  288. Oh Lord, that your spirit

  289. Will be upon us

  290. To bring a day of your power

  291. Into our midst

  292. So we pray, Lord

  293. For leaders over us

  294. And for potential leaders

  295. Over us

  296. And for all that goes on

  297. In our land

  298. We pray for your wisdom

  299. And for your guidance

  300. We pray for your peace

  301. Throughout the world

  302. Peace in the nations

  303. Of conflict and troubles

  304. That are many

  305. Peace in the midst

  306. Of terror and fear

  307. And so many other things

  308. We pray, Lord

  309. For your healing hand

  310. To be upon us

  311. To bring conflicts

  312. To an end

  313. To turn war into peace

  314. To bring a renewal

  315. Into our lands, oh Lord

  316. Where we see evil

  317. That we would see good

  318. Oh Lord, we ask these things

  319. Acknowledging our own weakness

  320. We can do nothing

  321. Apart from you

  322. And so we ask

  323. Independence upon you

  324. Asking, knowing

  325. That you are Lord

  326. And God of all

  327. And so we pray, Lord

  328. That you will help us

  329. To have faith

  330. And to pray with that faith

  331. We thank you

  332. For all our people here

  333. And we pray

  334. Your blessing

  335. On all that's been done

  336. This day

  337. For our young people

  338. In our services of worship

  339. And in the fellowship

  340. To come this evening as well

  341. We pray, Lord

  342. That your blessing

  343. Will follow all things

  344. We thank you

  345. For the youth fellowship

  346. To take place

  347. And may it be blessed

  348. To all who attend

  349. We thank you

  350. For Muriel, Lord

  351. For the time

  352. She has enjoyed

  353. At home with us

  354. And for her preparations

  355. For going away, Lord

  356. We pray for everything

  357. That needs to be done

  358. To enable her

  359. To go back to Cambodia

  360. And as she looks forward

  361. To returning to that work

  362. God willing

  363. We pray

  364. Your protection

  365. And your blessing on her

  366. And upon all

  367. The work that she does

  368. There with so many others

  369. We pray, Lord

  370. That your blessing

  371. Will follow it

  372. And for all your people

  373. Who serve you

  374. Near and far, Lord

  375. We pray for strength

  376. For encouragement

  377. And for your help

  378. In persevering

  379. And keeping on

  380. In all that we do

  381. So bless us now

  382. And go before us

  383. Pardoning all our sin

  384. As we ask it all

  385. In Jesus' name

  386. Amen

  387. Well again, sing to God's praise

  388. This time in Psalm 27

  389. In the Sing Psalms version

  390. Page 32 of the Psalm books

  391. We're going to sing

  392. From verse 9

  393. To verse 14

  394. The end of the Psalm

  395. Psalm 27

  396. At verse 9

  397. Do not hide your face from me

  398. And do not turn aside

  399. Your servant in your righteous wrath

  400. For you have been my guide

  401. O God, my Saviour

  402. Leave me not

  403. Do not reject my plea

  404. My parents may forsake me, Lord

  405. But you will welcome me

  406. We'll sing from verse 9

  407. To the end of the Psalm

  408. And the tune is Belmont

  409. Oh, do not hide your face from me

  410. And do not turn aside

  411. Your servant in your righteous wrath

  412. For you have been my guide

  413. O God, my Saviour

  414. Leave me not

  415. Do not reject my plea

  416. My valence may forsake me, Lord

  417. But you will welcome me

  418. Teach me, O Lord

  419. How I should live

  420. And lead me in your way

  421. Make straight my path

  422. In all time falls

  423. Oppress me every day

  424. Give me not over to the will

  425. Of David Gentiles

  426. For my heart

  427. For my heart

  428. To slander me

  429. For my heart

  430. To slander me

  431. And greet the cruelty

  432. Yet I am sure

  433. Yet I am sure

  434. That in this time

  435. God's goodness

  436. I will see

  437. Wait for the Lord

  438. Lord

  439. He strong

  440. He strong

  441. Take heart

  442. For him

  443. Wake

  444. Wait patiently

  445. Wait patiently

  446. Wait patiently

  447. Wait for the Lord

  448. I am sure

  449. I am sure

  450. I am sure

  451. I am sure

  452. I am sure

  453. We are going to take

  454. To the second

  455. To the second

  456. Book of the Bible

  457. Before Revelation

  458. The letter of Jude

  459. Read the whole of this letter together

  460. The letter of Jude

  461. From the beginning

  462. Jude

  463. A servant of Jesus Christ

  464. And brother of James

  465. To those who are called beloved in God

  466. The father and kept for Jesus Christ

  467. May mercy

  468. Peace

  469. And love

  470. Be multiplied to you

  471. Beloved

  472. Although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation

  473. I found it necessary to write appealing to you

  474. To contend

  475. For the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints

  476. For certain people have crept in unnoticed

  477. Who long ago were designated for this condemnation

  478. And godly people

  479. Who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality

  480. And deny our only Master and Lord Jesus Christ

  481. Now I want to remind you

  482. Although you once fully knew it

  483. That Jesus who saved a people out of the land of Egypt

  484. Afterwards destroyed those who did not believe

  485. And the angels who did not stay within their own position

  486. Of authority

  487. But left their proper dwelling

  488. He has kept in eternal chains

  489. Under gloomy darkness

  490. Until the judgment of the great day

  491. Just as Sodom and Gomorrah

  492. And the surrounding cities

  493. Which likewise indulged in sexual immorality

  494. And pursued unnatural desire

  495. Serve as an example by undergoing a punishment

  496. Of eternal fire

  497. Yet in like manner these people also

  498. Relying on their dreams

  499. Defile the flesh

  500. Reject authority

  501. And blaspheme the glorious ones

  502. But when the archangel Michael

  503. Contending with the devil

  504. Was disputing about the body of Moses

  505. He did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment

  506. But said

  507. The Lord rebuke you

  508. But these people blaspheme

  509. All that they do not understand

  510. And they are destroyed by all that they

  511. Like unreasoning animals

  512. Understand instinctively

  513. Woe to them

  514. For they walked in the way of Cain

  515. And abandoned themselves

  516. For the sake of gain to Balaam's error

  517. And perished in Korah's rebellion

  518. These are blemishes on your love feasts

  519. As they feast with you without fear

  520. Looking after themselves

  521. Waterless clouds

  522. Swept along by winds

  523. Fruitless trees

  524. In late autumn

  525. Twice dead

  526. Uprooted

  527. Wild waves of the sea

  528. Casting up the foam

  529. Of their own shame

  530. Wandering stars

  531. For whom the gloom of utter darkness

  532. Has been reserved forever

  533. It's also about these

  534. That Enoch the seventh from Adam

  535. Prophesied saying

  536. Behold the Lord came with ten thousands

  537. Of his holy ones

  538. To execute judgment on all

  539. And to convict all the ungodly

  540. Of all their deeds of ungodliness

  541. That they have committed

  542. In such an ungodly way

  543. And of all the harsh things

  544. That ungodly sinners have spoken against him

  545. These are grumblers

  546. Grumblers

  547. Malcontents

  548. Following their own sinful desires

  549. They are loud mouth boasters

  550. Showing favoritism to gain advantage

  551. But you must remember beloved

  552. The predictions of the apostles

  553. Of our Lord Jesus Christ

  554. They said to you

  555. In the last time

  556. There will be scoffers

  557. Following their own ungodly passions

  558. It is these who cause divisions

  559. Worldly people

  560. Devoid of the spirit

  561. But you beloved

  562. Build yourselves up

  563. In your most holy faith

  564. Pray in the Holy Spirit

  565. Keep yourselves in the love of God

  566. Waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ

  567. That leads to eternal life

  568. And have mercy on those who doubt

  569. Save others by snatching them out of the fire

  570. To others show mercy

  571. With fear hating even the garment

  572. Stained by the flesh

  573. Now to him who is able

  574. To keep you from stumbling

  575. And to present you blameless

  576. Before the presence of his glory

  577. With great joy

  578. To the only God our Saviour

  579. Through Jesus Christ our Lord

  580. Be glory, majesty, dominion and authority

  581. Before all time and now and forever

  582. Amen

  583. May God bless that reading from his word

  584. Before we turn back to that passage

  585. We'll again sing to God's praise in Psalm 62

  586. Again we're in the sing psalms

  587. On page 79

  588. Psalm 62

  589. On page 79

  590. We're going to sing from verse 1

  591. To verse 8

  592. And the tune is Herringate

  593. My soul finds rest in God alone

  594. From him comes my salvation sure

  595. My safety, fortress, sheltering rock

  596. In him alone I am secure

  597. We'll sing from verse 1

  598. To verse 8

  599. To God's praise

  600. My soul finds rest in God alone

  601. From him comes my salvation sure

  602. My safety, fortress, sheltering rock

  603. In him alone I am secure

  604. How long will you assault a man?

  605. Do you all seek to lay in love?

  606. This meany wall, this taunting face

  607. And bring our albis overgrown

  608. They plough his whole promises

  609. They take delight in spreading light

  610. With force and ploughing, bounding legs

  611. But in their hearts

  612. Curse and despise

  613. Find praise my soul

  614. In God alone

  615. In him my hope is ever sure

  616. My safety, fortress, sheltering rock

  617. In him alone I am secure

  618. My honor and salvation praise

  619. My honor and salvation praise

  620. On God my hope

  621. My honor and salvation praise

  622. On God my hope

  623. My honor and salvation praise

  624. On God my hope

  625. My honor and salvation praise

  626. On God my hope

  627. My honor and salvation praise

  628. On God my hope

  629. My honor and salvation praise

  630. On God my hope

  631. On God my hope

  632. My glory

  633. On God my hope

  634. My honor and salvation praise

  635. On God my glory

  636. On God my glory

  637. On God my glory

  638. On God my glory

  639. On God my glory

  640. All God my glory

  641. Christ in him always, to him alone for a pure heart.

  642. Well, we can turn back together to our reading in the letter of Jude.

  643. And we're going to look at the end of this letter, verse 17 onwards in particular.

  644. And just to note three things in these verses that we're going to focus in on particularly.

  645. Verse 17, verse 20, and verse 24.

  646. And twice it says there in verse 17 and 20,

  647. But you, but you must remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  648. Then at verse 20,

  649. But you, beloved, build yourselves up in your most holy faith.

  650. And then in verse 24 it says,

  651. Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling.

  652. And so on.

  653. So we see there there's two, but you.

  654. And then at the end, now to him.

  655. That's what we're going to be looking at in particular this evening, these verses.

  656. I'm sure many of you from time to time you'll receive a brown envelope through the post.

  657. And that envelope will be marked, well marked now, on his majesty's service.

  658. In the past it used to be on her majesty's service.

  659. There's an element of importance attached to this envelope.

  660. And maybe for some people you see it arriving and it fills you maybe with a sense of dread.

  661. What am I going to see when I open this envelope?

  662. For other people there may be a sense of anticipation.

  663. I wonder if there's anything good coming inside this envelope.

  664. Sometimes it's good where you maybe get tax back or something like that.

  665. You get a rebate.

  666. Other times and maybe more often, it's asking you to make payment.

  667. That you owe something.

  668. But whatever comes in this envelope, whenever that envelope arrives on his majesty's service,

  669. there's one thing that you mustn't do with it.

  670. And that is to ignore it.

  671. Just to put it away somewhere and forget all about and say,

  672. I'll deal with that later.

  673. I'm just not interested on what's inside it.

  674. We cannot ignore these kinds of letters.

  675. And so as we turn to this letter of Jude this evening,

  676. you see the way Jude describes himself in the opening verse of this letter.

  677. And there is a reminder to us of the importance of this letter.

  678. Indeed, the importance of all of God's word.

  679. Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ.

  680. Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ.

  681. So this letter, it comes with a stamp of authority.

  682. This is an important letter.

  683. This is truly on his majesty's service.

  684. Our king is speaking to us through his word.

  685. And above all, as with all scripture, this is something that we cannot ignore.

  686. Maybe for some of us, we look forward to hearing what this letter,

  687. what God's word has to say to us.

  688. Maybe for others, we're a little fearful coming to God's word

  689. and hearing what is going to be in God's word for us.

  690. Because we're always challenged, we're always convicted by God's word.

  691. But one thing none of us can do is just choose to ignore it

  692. and choose to put it away and maybe deal with it another time.

  693. Because every time we hear this word, the king is speaking to us.

  694. And so we want to hear what God the Lord is saying to us together

  695. this evening through his word here.

  696. And this is a letter that is maybe difficult to just figure out

  697. who it's being written to.

  698. Some have speculated whether it's written to Gentiles.

  699. Some have said it's written more towards the Jewish people,

  700. the two main kinds of people in Jude's day.

  701. But most have come down on the side that it's written to both.

  702. It's written to Christians, both Jews and Gentiles,

  703. who, as we see in this letter,

  704. are having to contend with having to deal with

  705. false teaching coming into their midst.

  706. They're living very much in the midst of a pagan society.

  707. Society that really wants little to do with God.

  708. And similar to what we were hearing together this morning

  709. of Daniel and his days in Babylon.

  710. Days when people were trying to pull them away from God

  711. and bring them into their own ways of thinking.

  712. And that's exactly what's happening here in Jude's day as well.

  713. And as you look at this letter, you see in the opening verses,

  714. in verse 3 and 4, we are told this congregation of Christians

  715. that Jude is writing to, he's writing to encourage them

  716. to contend for the faith.

  717. It says that in verse 3.

  718. I found it necessary to write appealing to you

  719. to contend for the faith

  720. that was once for all delivered to the saints.

  721. So there's this purpose in his writing to the Christians

  722. to contend with the faith, to keep going in the faith,

  723. to remain strong in the faith.

  724. And then he tells the reason why he has to write,

  725. for certain people have crept in unnoticed,

  726. who long ago were designated for this condemnation.

  727. ungodly people who pervert the grace of our God.

  728. So they were perverting the truth.

  729. They were giving them this false teaching.

  730. And so Jude is writing to them to encourage them

  731. to contend in the faith, to keep going in the faith.

  732. And from verse 5 to verse 16,

  733. he outlines a number of the problems that they are facing,

  734. a number of the challenges that they are facing,

  735. what they are to beware of,

  736. of all of these false teachers who have come.

  737. And again, just like this morning with Daniel,

  738. and as we look around our world today,

  739. we're surrounded by false teaching,

  740. by teaching that in many ways is crazy in our eyes.

  741. But yet we find that even in the midst of all of this,

  742. the word of God is so timely to us.

  743. For every situation, for every circumstance

  744. that we find ourselves in,

  745. there's nothing new under the sun.

  746. That's what God's words reminds us

  747. in the book of Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament,

  748. that there's nothing new under the sun.

  749. And so as generations pass and as time goes on,

  750. we find ourselves coming against the same issues

  751. time and time again.

  752. But then in verse 17 to verse 25,

  753. Jude outlines the response that God's people are to have

  754. in every generation, in every set of circumstances.

  755. And that is to always look to God.

  756. How to deal with these situations,

  757. how to keep on,

  758. it is always to look to God.

  759. Because just as there's nothing new under the sun,

  760. God is a constant in it all as well.

  761. He is the one who has brought his people

  762. through every occasion,

  763. whether it's Daniel and his compatriots there in Babylon,

  764. whether it's going back to the days of God's people in Egypt,

  765. whether it's going into the New Testament

  766. and the disciples going out with the Lord.

  767. All of these things,

  768. the constant is that God is faithful to his people.

  769. And in this letter,

  770. Jude gives us encouragement,

  771. how to keep on.

  772. The encouragement that people needed then

  773. and that maybe we need today as well.

  774. To keep going and to keep looking and trusting in God,

  775. no matter what is going on around us.

  776. And you see it in three parts,

  777. as I was saying there in this letter to Jude.

  778. Under these beginnings where he says,

  779. but you, but you,

  780. and now to him who is able.

  781. And we're going to break it down into these three sections.

  782. In verse 17 to 19,

  783. he gives us a call to remembrance.

  784. In verse 20 and 23,

  785. he gives us an exhortation to grow,

  786. to build ourselves up in the faith.

  787. And then at the end of the letter,

  788. verse 24 to 25,

  789. we see we are to remember that God is the one

  790. who is able to keep us.

  791. That is what we have to do on the one hand,

  792. and that what God is doing for his people

  793. on the other hand,

  794. and both go together.

  795. And so in the midst of the variety of false teaching

  796. that Jude is writing about in these opening verses,

  797. he comes back to conclude the letter in a positive way,

  798. giving instructions so we not only

  799. see the challenges around us,

  800. and the reality of God is over them,

  801. but we also see that God is the one

  802. who is able to bring us through them,

  803. and that we can grow in our knowledge

  804. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  805. So there's these two sides

  806. to this Christian perseverance.

  807. Our part to keep on,

  808. and God's part in his keeping of us.

  809. So the first thing we want to see

  810. is the remembering side of things.

  811. But just before we come to that,

  812. I want us to think of these words

  813. that it begins with in verse 17.

  814. But you.

  815. There's a change in the letter here with Jude.

  816. After going through all that is wrong

  817. in the false teaching that has come into their midst,

  818. now he begins a new section in verse 17

  819. saying, but you.

  820. There's an indication here

  821. that there are people who are to be different.

  822. As we were hearing the children's address this morning,

  823. it's this free from.

  824. We are to be different as God's people.

  825. And that's what these words mean at the start,

  826. but you.

  827. There's a challenge to God's people.

  828. And that asks the question immediately of us,

  829. what side are we on?

  830. There's a contrast in the opening verses

  831. of all that is wrong with the world of Jude's day,

  832. where people are being pulled into this way of thinking,

  833. this way of living.

  834. You can read through it again

  835. when you go home this evening.

  836. But you see the manner of these people,

  837. as he says in verse 8.

  838. The manner of these people relying on their dreams,

  839. defile the flesh,

  840. reject authority,

  841. blaspheme the glorious one.

  842. All that is wrong with the people

  843. is outlined almost in these words.

  844. They put away authority,

  845. they blaspheme the glorious one.

  846. There is you who is on that side.

  847. But as Jude goes on there in verse 17,

  848. he says,

  849. but you are different.

  850. And so the question as we start is,

  851. is that the side that you are on?

  852. Are you on the side that is blaspheming the glorious one?

  853. Going along with the pull of this world

  854. and the way of this world

  855. that's going further and further away from God?

  856. Or are you like Daniel,

  857. standing on the other side?

  858. Standing for the Lord.

  859. And maybe it's a question,

  860. you're afraid to be asked.

  861. It's a question you maybe want to avoid

  862. at certain times.

  863. Maybe it's a question you maybe dread a minister

  864. coming to ask you.

  865. But what about you?

  866. But it's an unavoidable question.

  867. And it's a question I put to you all tonight.

  868. But you, this evening,

  869. what side are you on?

  870. Are we on the side that blasphemes?

  871. Or are we on the side that is going on

  872. in the strength of the Lord?

  873. And as we move on,

  874. we're going to see that the you that he is talking to here

  875. is the side we must be on.

  876. The side of faith.

  877. The side of trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ

  878. and growing in our knowledge of him.

  879. But that question remains,

  880. but you, what side are you on?

  881. So then we go on to see what he's saying to these people.

  882. And he says, first of all,

  883. but you must remember, beloved,

  884. the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  885. He has warned that false teachers have come in.

  886. But now he's saying to them,

  887. there is this challenge.

  888. But you, are you going to be different?

  889. Are you going to remember the word of God?

  890. Are you going to remember the predictions

  891. of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ?

  892. They said to you,

  893. in the last time there will be scoffers

  894. following their own ungodly passions.

  895. So here he's challenging the people in us,

  896. he's challenging ourselves

  897. to remember these things,

  898. to remember these warnings

  899. that are come into our midst.

  900. People speak about the last days

  901. and if we're in the last days,

  902. well here it's made clear for us

  903. that even in Jude's day,

  904. this was the last days.

  905. Because scoffers had come into their midst.

  906. And so in these days that we are living in today,

  907. we are still seeing the same thing.

  908. Scoffers following their own ungodly passions.

  909. And how do we keep going in the midst of this?

  910. How do we keep on?

  911. How do we remain faithful?

  912. We remember the predictions of the apostles

  913. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  914. So as we see so much around us

  915. that doesn't make sense,

  916. as we see so much that is a going away from God,

  917. how do we respond?

  918. Well there's certain kinds of reactions

  919. that we could have.

  920. Certain reactions that God's people in Jude's day,

  921. in the day of our Lord Jesus,

  922. in the days of the Old Testament,

  923. that they would have had.

  924. Reactions such as discouragement.

  925. It can be so discouraging

  926. when we see all of these things.

  927. Worry can come in.

  928. Where is our world going?

  929. What direction are we going in?

  930. And it's natural for us to feel these things.

  931. Anger is a reaction we could have as well.

  932. All of these things are reactions

  933. that we could go through.

  934. But Jude directs us here

  935. in what our reaction should be.

  936. to remember the predictions

  937. of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  938. Because that reminds us

  939. that nothing should take us by surprise.

  940. Nothing happens unknown to God.

  941. All you have to do is look back

  942. to the teaching of the Lord Jesus himself.

  943. How he predicted these days himself.

  944. In Matthew chapter 24,

    Matthew 24 chapter mention

  945. Jesus gave these kinds of warnings

  946. to his disciples

  947. before his death and resurrection

  948. and his ascension.

  949. What did he say to them?

  950. Matthew 24 verse 11,

    Matthew 24:11

  951. Jesus tells his disciples,

  952. and many false prophets

  953. will arise and lead many astray.

  954. This is what's going to happen.

  955. This is the predictions

  956. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  957. This is the prediction

  958. of the apostles.

  959. Paul in the book of Acts chapter 20,

    Acts 20:29

  960. verse 29, he says,

  961. I know that after my departure,

  962. fierce wolves will come in among you,

  963. not sparing the flock.

  964. And he warns them

  965. that even from among your own selves

  966. will arise men speaking twisted things

  967. to draw away the disciples after them.

  968. So what's he saying here?

  969. He's saying,

  970. remember the predictions

  971. of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  972. They have told us

  973. that these things will happen.

  974. And so as we hear that they will happen,

  975. we are to be on our guard.

  976. To be on our guard,

  977. ready against them.

  978. Jude is telling us

  979. not to be discouraged,

  980. not to be dismayed at all of this.

  981. This is part of the outworking

  982. of the last days.

  983. We may expect things to go

  984. from strength to strength

  985. for the cause of God.

  986. We may expect blessing after blessing.

  987. We pray for it.

  988. But it's not always the case.

  989. There are challenges.

  990. There are persecutions.

  991. There are trials of all different kinds.

  992. Even when we have faith.

  993. It's a bit like getting a medicine.

  994. Taking a tablet.

  995. And on the tablet,

  996. it will tell you

  997. what you're to take this tablet for.

  998. It's going to help you

  999. with a certain kind of illness

  1000. that you have.

1001. But if you don't read the tablet,

1002. if you don't read the instructions,

1003. you might start to feel

1004. even more unwell for a time.

1005. You might start to feel unwell

  1006. in a different way

  1007. for a time.

  1008. And you're thinking,

  1009. this isn't right.

  1010. This shouldn't be.

1011. This tablet is meant to help me.

1012. But with so much medication,

  1013. it tells you

1014. that there are side effects.

1015. And if you don't read them,

  1016. you don't know

1017. that they're going to come.

1018. And it can catch you off guard.

1019. But if you've read them,

  1020. you'll know that they'll come

  1021. at some point.

1022. And it won't catch you off guard.

  1023. And so,

  1024. Jude is saying here,

  1025. just like that,

  1026. although you have blessings

  1027. in Christ Jesus,

1028. remember that there are those

  1029. who will come,

  1030. scoffers following their own

  1031. ungodly passions.

1032. There are those who will seek

  1033. to lead people astray.

1034. And as you remember these things,

1035. then you are prepared for them.

  1036. Paul's charge to Timothy,

1037. to his young friend Timothy,

  1038. was to remain faithful

1039. to the Word of God.

  1040. Because he warned them,

1041. holding faith and a good conscience.

  1042. Because by rejecting this,

1043. some have made a shipwreck

  1044. of their faith.

  1045. Some who have forgotten

1046. the predictions of the apostles.

  1047. Some who have forgotten

  1048. what God's Word says.

1049. Some who have not been prepared

  1050. for the attacks

1051. that have come their way.

  1052. They've made a shipwreck

  1053. of their faith.

1054. And how easy it is for us

  1055. to lose heart,

  1056. not remembering

1057. what the Word of God says.

  1058. And in that,

  1059. we can end up

  1060. in a shipwreck

  1061. or a car crash

1062. of our own faith too.

  1063. In the early 90s,

1064. going back about 30 years now,

  1065. there was a commercial,

1066. an advert on the telly

1067. for two different kinds of cars.

  1068. And the advert began

  1069. with a car heading

  1070. towards this wall.

1071. And the brakes being applied,

  1072. but the car crashes

  1073. into the wall

  1074. and it's a wreck.

  1075. But yet,

  1076. because of the way

1077. the car has been designed,

  1078. the people inside

  1079. are kept safe

  1080. by airbags

  1081. and the strength

  1082. of the structure

  1083. around them.

  1084. I think that's

  1085. quite impressive.

  1086. But then,

  1087. there was another car

  1088. showing

1089. in the same kind of situation,

  1090. heading for the wall.

  1091. But when the person

  1092. applies the brakes,

1093. the brakes are so good

1094. that before the car crashes,

1095. it comes to a stop.

  1096. And at this point,

  1097. the man speaking

1098. in the advert cuts in

  1099. and he says,

  1100. cuts in to ask,

  1101. would you prefer

  1102. to live through wrecks

1103. or not get in wrecks

  1104. in the first place?

  1105. And that's what God's Word

1106. is so often doing for us.

  1107. It's helping us

1108. that we don't end up

  1109. in this shipwreck,

  1110. in this car crash

  1111. of our faith

  1112. because we're forgetting

  1113. the things

1114. that God has told us.

  1115. And so,

  1116. we are told here,

  1117. but you

  1118. must remember,

  1119. beloved,

  1120. the predictions

  1121. of the apostles

1122. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  1123. that these scoffers,

  1124. these people

  1125. who will seek

  1126. to lead us astray,

  1127. they will come in.

  1128. But he's saying,

  1129. you keep on.

  1130. Keep on

  1131. by remembering

  1132. the Word of God.

1133. And then he goes on

  1134. secondly to say

  1135. to them here,

  1136. but you, beloved,

  1137. so there's more

1138. to come here as well.

  1139. It's not just

  1140. remembering

1141. and holding on to that,

  1142. but now he's saying,

  1143. beloved,

  1144. build yourselves up

  1145. in your most

  1146. holy faith.

  1147. Pray

  1148. in the Holy Spirit.

  1149. Keep yourselves

1150. in the love of God,

  1151. waiting

  1152. for the mercy

1153. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  1154. that leads

  1155. to eternal

  1156. life.

  1157. So,

  1158. here we are again,

  1159. but you.

  1160. And we ask ourselves

  1161. again,

  1162. is this what you

  1163. are like?

  1164. Is this the side

1165. that you come down on?

  1166. You have heard

  1167. the phrase,

  1168. the best form

  1169. of defense

  1170. is attack.

  1171. And so,

  1172. Jude is here

  1173. saying,

  1174. not just to defend

  1175. ourselves

  1176. by remembering

  1177. the predictions,

  1178. but to go

  1179. on the offensive

  1180. here as well,

  1181. to build yourselves

  1182. up in your

  1183. most holy faith,

  1184. to do this

  1185. as we all must,

  1186. to build ourselves

1187. up in the holy faith,

1188. praying in the Holy Spirit,

  1189. keeping yourself

1190. in the love of God.

  1191. And so,

  1192. it goes on.

  1193. So,

  1194. Jude is giving

  1195. this direction

  1196. to us

  1197. for growth,

  1198. building ourselves

  1199. up in the faith,

  1200. the building blocks

  1201. of our faith,

  1202. the things

  1203. that we are

  1204. to put

  1205. into practice.

  1206. And it boils down

  1207. to these four things,

  1208. four basics

  1209. of the Christian faith,

  1210. but you

  1211. must do this.

  1212. Build yourselves

  1213. up

  1214. in your most

  1215. holy faith.

  1216. faith.

  1217. Be devoted

  1218. to the Word

  1219. of God.

  1220. Believe

  1221. the Word

  1222. of God.

  1223. Hold fast

  1224. the Word

  1225. of God.

1226. Just like he was saying

  1227. to remember

  1228. the predictions

  1229. of the apostles

  1230. that scoffers

  1231. would come,

  1232. we add to this

  1233. everything else

  1234. that the Word

  1235. of God

  1236. sees.

  1237. Everything else

  1238. that the Word

  1239. of God

  1240. teaches us,

  1241. that we are

  1242. sinners,

  1243. that we have

  1244. fallen short

  1245. of the glory

  1246. of God,

  1247. but that Jesus

  1248. came to save

  1249. us from

  1250. our sin.

  1251. And that through

  1252. faith and repentance

  1253. we have this

  1254. hope of

  1255. eternal life.

  1256. Be devoted

  1257. to the Word

  1258. of God

  1259. to make it

  1260. your daily

  1261. portion

  1262. day by day,

  1263. not to neglect

  1264. what this

  1265. Word of God

  1266. is saying,

  1267. not to see it

  1268. as a letter

  1269. that can just

  1270. be put away

  1271. and forgotten

  1272. about and

  1273. ignored,

  1274. but that this

  1275. is God

  1276. himself,

  1277. our Lord

  1278. and King

  1279. speaking to

  1280. us.

  1281. And he's

  1282. saying,

  1283. build yourselves

  1284. up in your

  1285. most holy

  1286. faith.

  1287. And then he

  1288. says as well,

  1289. pray in the

  1290. Holy Spirit.

  1291. Again,

  1292. it's a part

  1293. of our lives

  1294. that we must

  1295. never neglect,

  1296. reminding ourselves

  1297. how dependent

  1298. we are on

  1299. God as we

  1300. seek to

  1301. persevere.

  1302. We are

  1303. dependent on

  1304. him to

  1305. persevere,

  1306. to keep

  1307. going.

  1308. Pray in

  1309. the Holy

  1310. Spirit.

  1311. Pray in

  1312. the one who

  1313. is called

  1314. alongside us,

  1315. the one who

  1316. Jesus promised

  1317. would come

  1318. and be our

  1319. comforter.

  1320. Be the one

  1321. called alongside

  1322. us to help

  1323. us and to

  1324. remind us that

  1325. he is with

  1326. us.

  1327. And so we

  1328. pray in

  1329. his name.

  1330. And then he

  1331. speaks about

  1332. our experience.

  1333. Keep

  1334. yourselves in

  1335. the love

  1336. of God.

  1337. It's not

  1338. just about

  1339. reminding

  1340. ourselves that

  1341. we love

  1342. God and

  1343. leaving it

  1344. at that,

  1345. but it's

  1346. living in

  1347. the knowledge

  1348. of God's

  1349. love for

  1350. us and

  1351. how that

  1352. affects all

  1353. that we

  1354. do.

  1355. Because to

  1356. feel unloved

  1357. by God

  1358. paralyzes us.

  1359. To feel a

  1360. failure before

  1361. God as we

  1362. so often

  1363. do, it

  1364. paralyzes us

  1365. and our

  1366. service is

  1367. hindered.

  1368. But here

  1369. he says,

  1370. keep

  1371. yourselves

  1372. in the

  1373. love of

  1374. God.

  1375. And

  1376. especially as

  1377. we think of

  1378. everything else

  1379. that seeks to

  1380. pull us back

  1381. into the

  1382. world.

  1383. If we

  1384. think,

  1385. there's no

  1386. way God

  1387. can love

  1388. me.

  1389. And the

  1390. things of

  1391. this world

  1392. we think,

  1393. well, we

  1394. might as

  1395. well just

  1396. go back.

  1397. But he's

  1398. saying here,

  1399. keep yourselves

  1400. in the

  1401. love of

  1402. God.

  1403. Remind

  1404. yourself,

  1405. what does

  1406. any false

  1407. teacher have

  1408. to offer

  1409. me that

  1410. compares to

  1411. the love

  1412. of God?

  1413. There is

  1414. nothing that

  1415. this world

  1416. can give

  1417. me that

  1418. will improve

  1419. my life

  1420. compared to

  1421. knowing the

  1422. love of

  1423. God.

  1424. The love

  1425. of God

  1426. that gave

  1427. his own

  1428. son for

  1429. our sins.

  1430. The love

  1431. of God

  1432. that is

  1433. able to

  1434. preserve us

  1435. and to

  1436. keep us

  1437. on in

  1438. this world.

  1439. A love

  1440. of God

  1441. that's not

  1442. dependent on

  1443. our perfectly

  1444. loving him

  1445. because we

  1446. so often

  1447. don't.

  1448. But remembering

  1449. the steadfast

  1450. love of

  1451. God that

  1452. never changes.

  1453. His love

  1454. love towards

  1455. us.

  1456. That we

  1457. have been

  1458. made a

  1459. son and

  1460. daughter of

  1461. the Most

  1462. High.

  1463. That we

  1464. have been

  1465. brought into

  1466. his family.

  1467. That we

  1468. are precious

  1469. to him

  1470. keeping

  1471. ourselves

  1472. in the

  1473. love of

  1474. God.

  1475. And then he

  1476. says too,

  1477. waiting for

  1478. the mercy

  1479. of our

  1480. Lord Jesus

  1481. Christ that

  1482. leads to

  1483. eternal life.

  1484. Again, that

  1485. ties into

  1486. how Jude is

  1487. speaking about

  1488. in these

  1489. last times.

  1490. When everything

  1491. seems to be

  1492. descending into

  1493. chaos, when

  1494. everything seems

  1495. to be going

  1496. away from

  1497. the glory of

  1498. God, we

  1499. remind ourselves

  1500. of this.

  1501. We are

  1502. waiting for

  1503. the mercy

  1504. of our

  1505. Lord Jesus

  1506. Christ.

  1507. That he

  1508. is coming.

  1509. And that he

  1510. will restore

  1511. all things

  1512. for his

  1513. people.

  1514. a people

  1515. who are

  1516. led to

  1517. eternal

  1518. life through

  1519. faith in

  1520. him.

  1521. And as we

  1522. hold on to

  1523. these things,

  1524. build ourselves

  1525. up in

  1526. these things,

  1527. it reminds

  1528. us to

  1529. have mercy,

  1530. as he

  1531. says, on

  1532. those who

  1533. doubt.

  1534. To save

  1535. others by

  1536. snatching

  1537. them out

  1538. of the

  1539. fire.

  1540. To others

  1541. show mercy

  1542. with fear,

  1543. hating even

  1544. the garments

  1545. stained by

  1546. the flesh.

  1547. The more

  1548. we see

  1549. the love

  1550. of God,

  1551. the more

  1552. we see

  1553. the fact

  1554. that he

  1555. is coming

  1556. and that

  1557. there is

  1558. eternal

  1559. life for

  1560. those who

  1561. believe,

  1562. we also

  1563. see that

  1564. there are

  1565. people who

  1566. are perishing.

  1567. Perishing in

  1568. their ignorance

  1569. as he speaks

  1570. and describes

  1571. them off in

  1572. the earlier

  1573. verses.

  1574. So much of

  1575. what they

  1576. are doing

  1577. is out of

  1578. ignorance.

  1579. And so

  1580. he reminds

  1581. us here

  1582. that we

  1583. are a

  1584. people who,

  1585. as we know

  1586. the love

  1587. of God,

  1588. are to

  1589. share

  1590. that love

  1591. of God

  1592. as well.

  1593. Build

  1594. yourselves

  1595. up,

  1596. he says.

  1597. When you

  1598. see young

  1599. children,

  1600. whether it's

  1601. your own

  1602. children or

  1603. maybe helping

  1604. in creche and

  1605. tweenies and

  1606. these things,

  1607. whenever you

  1608. see children,

  1609. they're so

  1610. often attracted

  1611. to building

  1612. blocks,

  1613. whether it's

  1614. Lego or

  1615. blocks,

  1616. they just

  1617. love to

  1618. build things.

  1619. And only

  1620. often is to

  1621. build as

  1622. high as

  1623. they can.

  1624. And well,

  1625. as children

  1626. of God,

  1627. we too are

  1628. deciding,

  1629. or should

  1630. decide,

  1631. to build

  1632. ourselves

  1633. to,

  1634. to build

  1635. ourselves

  1636. in our

  1637. most holy

  1638. faith,

  1639. putting all

  1640. these building

  1641. blocks together

  1642. to make

  1643. sure that

  1644. we are

  1645. doing our

  1646. part,

  1647. that our

  1648. love for

  1649. our Lord

  1650. is showing

  1651. itself in

  1652. all of

  1653. these ways.

  1654. A love

  1655. for the

  1656. word,

  1657. a love

  1658. for prayer,

  1659. keeping

  1660. yourselves

  1661. in the

  1662. love of

  1663. God,

  1664. reminding

  1665. ourselves

  1666. of that,

  1667. waiting

  1668. for the

  1669. mercy of

  1670. our Lord

  1671. Jesus

  1672. Christ,

  1673. and having

  1674. mercy on

  1675. those who

  1676. we see

  1677. around us

  1678. as lost.

  1679. Build

  1680. yourselves

  1681. up in

  1682. the most

  1683. holy

  1684. faith.

  1685. faith.

  1686. Then we

  1687. move from

  1688. this.

  1689. You think

  1690. it's all

  1691. about us

  1692. and what

  1693. we do,

  1694. and we

  1695. know it's

  1696. not,

  1697. and that's

  1698. how Jude

  1699. closes his

  1700. letter.

  1701. We are

  1702. reminded of

  1703. the things

  1704. that we

  1705. are to

  1706. do.

  1707. You,

  1708. but you

  1709. must remember

  1710. the predictions,

  1711. but you

  1712. build yourselves

  1713. up in the

  1714. faith,

  1715. but then we

  1716. are reminded

  1717. finally that

  1718. it is the

  1719. Lord who

  1720. keeps us.

  1721. Now to

  1722. him who

  1723. is able

  1724. to keep

  1725. you from

  1726. stumbling

  1727. and to

  1728. present you

  1729. blameless

  1730. before the

  1731. presence of

  1732. his glory

  1733. with great

  1734. joy.

  1735. So it

  1736. is him

  1737. who is

  1738. able to

  1739. keep us.

  1740. And we

  1741. are reminded

  1742. of that,

  1743. and there's

  1744. great comfort

  1745. to us

  1746. here.

  1747. How are

  1748. we going

  1749. to keep

  1750. on?

  1751. Well,

  1752. if it's

  1753. all about

  1754. ourselves,

  1755. we'll fall

  1756. short.

  1757. But you

  1758. remember the

  1759. teachings of

  1760. the apostles,

  1761. we'll forget

  1762. certain things.

  1763. We'll worry

  1764. about certain

  1765. things.

  1766. But you,

  1767. beloved,

  1768. build yourselves

  1769. up.

  1770. So often

  1771. we'll fail

  1772. in that area

  1773. too.

  1774. But God

  1775. knows.

  1776. And that's

  1777. why it is

  1778. him who

  1779. is able

  1780. to keep

  1781. you from

  1782. stumbling

  1783. and to

  1784. present you

  1785. blameless.

  1786. it's not

  1787. ourselves

  1788. coming and

  1789. saying,

  1790. here is

  1791. what I've

  1792. done.

  1793. But we

  1794. can say,

  1795. Lord,

  1796. in my

  1797. imperfect

  1798. love for

  1799. you,

  1800. in all

  1801. my

  1802. failings

  1803. before you,

  1804. I come

  1805. not through

  1806. myself,

  1807. but presented

  1808. blameless

  1809. through you.

  1810. For you

  1811. have promised

  1812. to keep

  1813. me,

  1814. that you

  1815. will keep

  1816. all who

  1817. put their

  1818. trust in

  1819. you.

  1820. And there's

  1821. much power

  1822. and there's

  1823. much comfort

  1824. in these

  1825. words.

  1826. It's a

  1827. benediction.

  1828. It's a

  1829. blessing on

  1830. God's

  1831. people.

  1832. And that's

  1833. the way

  1834. Jude concludes

  1835. this letter,

  1836. with these

  1837. powerful

  1838. words.

  1839. It's a

  1840. letter of

  1841. urgent

  1842. warnings

  1843. about our

  1844. own

  1845. responsibilities,

  1846. but it's a

  1847. letter too

  1848. reminding us

  1849. that it is

  1850. him who

  1851. keeps us.

  1852. And when

  1853. you think

  1854. of these

  1855. words,

  1856. now to

  1857. him who

  1858. is able

  1859. to keep

  1860. you from

  1861. stumbling.

  1862. Stumbling,

  1863. again,

  1864. we come

  1865. back to

  1866. thinking about

  1867. a child.

  1868. And so

  1869. often when I

  1870. think of

  1871. these words,

  1872. it reminds

  1873. me of a

  1874. child learning

  1875. to ride

  1876. their bike.

  1877. How little

  1878. by little

  1879. they learn

  1880. to ride,

  1881. first maybe

  1882. with both

  1883. stabilizers

  1884. on,

  1885. a little

  1886. bit wobbly.

  1887. then one

  1888. stabilizer

  1889. is taken

  1890. off and

  1891. they'll be

  1892. stumbling

  1893. then.

  1894. And then

  1895. the time

  1896. will come

  1897. when both

  1898. stabilizers

  1899. come off

  1900. and the

  1901. child is

  1902. wobbling

  1903. from side

  1904. to side.

  1905. But as a

  1906. parent,

  1907. as a

  1908. father or

  1909. a mother,

  1910. you take

  1911. hold of

  1912. the seat

  1913. or you

  1914. go alongside

  1915. them,

  1916. you keep

  1917. them from

  1918. stumbling.

  1919. It's almost

  1920. like that is

  1921. the image

  1922. that we have

  1923. here.

  1924. Him who

  1925. is able

  1926. to keep

  1927. you from

  1928. stumbling.

  1929. Him who

  1930. is with

  1931. you always.

  1932. The one

  1933. who is able

  1934. to keep

  1935. you.

  1936. The one

  1937. who we

  1938. see described

  1939. as having

  1940. his everlasting

  1941. arms underneath.

  1942. The one

  1943. who keeps

  1944. his people.

  1945. And so

  1946. we are to

  1947. follow the

  1948. example of

  1949. Jude himself

  1950. here.

  1951. The one

  1952. who persevered

  1953. in the

  1954. faith and

  1955. the hard

  1956. work of

  1957. the Christian

  1958. life.

  1959. But the

  1960. one who

  1961. is able

  1962. to praise

  1963. God in

  1964. the midst

  1965. of it

  1966. all.

  1967. So how

  1968. do we

  1969. persevere?

  1970. How then

  1971. do we

  1972. keep on?

  1973. We

  1974. remember,

  1975. beloved,

  1976. the predictions.

  1977. We remember,

  1978. beloved,

  1979. that we are

  1980. to build

  1981. ourselves up

  1982. in the

  1983. most holy

  1984. faith.

  1985. But above

  1986. all,

  1987. we remember

  1988. him,

  1989. who is

  1990. able to

  1991. keep you

  1992. from

  1993. stumbling

  1994. and to

  1995. present you

  1996. blameless

  1997. before the

  1998. presence of

  1999. his glory

  2000. with great

  2001. joy.

  2002. We have a

  2003. God who

  2004. is able

  2005. to keep

  2006. us.

  2007. Here,

  2008. before us

  2009. this night,

  2010. we have a

  2011. letter.

  2012. And on this

  2013. letter,

  2014. it says,

  2015. this is on

  2016. his majesty's

  2017. service.

  2018. verse,

  2019. it's not

  2020. to be

  2021. ignored.

  2022. So the

  2023. question is,

  2024. but you.

  2025. What will

  2026. you do

  2027. with this

  2028. word?

  2029. Will you

  2030. ignore it

  2031. and put it

  2032. away?

  2033. Or will you

  2034. open your

  2035. heart to

  2036. receive this

  2037. word and

  2038. see as a

  2039. people what

  2040. we are to

  2041. do to keep

  2042. ourselves,

  2043. us,

  2044. but above

  2045. all to

  2046. see what

  2047. God has

  2048. done to

  2049. keep us

  2050. from stumbling

  2051. and that he

  2052. is able to

  2053. keep us

  2054. for all

  2055. eternity.

  2056. May we

  2057. hear what

  2058. God the

  2059. Lord is

  2060. saying and

  2061. put our

  2062. trust in

  2063. him.

  2064. Let us

  2065. pray.

  2066. Our

  2067. Father in

  2068. heaven,

  2069. we rejoice

  2070. that you

  2071. are a

  2072. God who

  2073. speaks and

  2074. who has

  2075. not kept

  2076. silent,

  2077. that you

  2078. have not

  2079. turned away

  2080. from us,

  2081. but that

  2082. you are a

  2083. God who

  2084. is calling

  2085. his people

  2086. to heed

  2087. your word,

  2088. to hear what

  2089. you are

  2090. saying as

  2091. our Lord

  2092. and as

  2093. our King.

  2094. And so

  2095. help us to

  2096. hear that

  2097. you are

  2098. calling to

  2099. us as a

  2100. people,

  2101. every one

  2102. of us,

  2103. but you

  2104. this evening.

  2105. What will

  2106. you do?

  2107. So Lord,

  2108. bless us,

  2109. we pray,

  2110. and guide us

  2111. in all of

  2112. these things,

  2113. forgiving our

  2114. sins,

  2115. in Jesus'

  2116. name.

  2117. Amen.

  2118. We're going

  2119. to conclude

  2120. by singing

  2121. to God's

  2122. praise in

  2123. Psalm 139,

  2124. page 433,

  2125. Psalm 139,

  2126. at verse 16

  2127. down to

  2128. verse 18,

  2129. the tune is

  2130. Weatherby.

  2131. This is Psalm

  2132. reminds us

  2133. that the Lord

  2134. knows that

  2135. every circumstance,

  2136. even as we

  2137. see in these

  2138. verses that

  2139. we are formed

  2140. in the innermost

  2141. part, we are

  2142. formed in

  2143. his knowledge

  2144. of us.

  2145. Thine eyes

  2146. my substance

  2147. did behold,

  2148. yet being

  2149. unperfect,

  2150. and in the

  2151. volume of

  2152. thy book

  2153. my members

  2154. all were

  2155. writh,

  2156. which after

  2157. incontinuance

  2158. were fashioned

  2159. every one,

  2160. when as

  2161. they yet

  2162. as shapeless

  2163. were,

  2164. and of them

  2165. there was

  2166. none.

  2167. But yet

  2168. we see

  2169. how precious

  2170. also are

  2171. your thoughts,

  2172. O gracious

  2173. God,

  2174. to me,

  2175. and in

  2176. their sum

  2177. how passing

  2178. great and

  2179. numberless

  2180. they be.

  2181. So we'll sing

  2182. from verse 16

  2183. to 18

  2184. to God's

  2185. praise.

  2186. Amen.

  2187. Thy night

  2188. my substance

  2189. still

  2190. behold,

  2191. yet

  2192. and he

  2193. added,

  2194. and in

  2195. his

  2196. 의 order

  2197. hold

  2198. high

  2199. of

  2200. my

  2201. members

  2202. of

  2203. wherein

  2204. chacun

  2205. We chapter in continuous

2206. Where passion gave me war

2207. When us created all shameless were

2208. And nothing there was none

2209. How precious also I thought

2210. O gracious God to me

  2211. And in their song

  2212. How vows sing great

2213. How dumb their heads believe

2214. If I should count the path

  2215. The sound they would

  2216. Lord in number be

  2217. What time so ever

  2218. Nigh away

2219. I am the one with thee

2220. After the benediction I'll go to the door to my left

2221. We'll close with the benediction

2222. Now may grace, mercy and peace from God

2223. Father, Son and Holy Spirit

2224. Rest upon and abide with you all

  2225. Now and forever more

  2226. Amen

  2227. Amen

  2228. Amen

  2229. Amen

  2230. Amen

  2231. Thank you.
