  1. Acts chapter 7.

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  2. This evening we're looking at the last part of chapter 7 and into chapter 8.

  3. As we consider Stephen, as we've been looking at him this evening, thinking of Stephen the martyr.

  4. Verse 54, we read these words.

  5. Now when they heard these things, they were enraged and they ground their teeth at him.

  6. But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.

  7. And he said, behold, I see the heavens open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.

  8. And so on.

  9. Well, as you look through the book of Acts up to this point, you see the early church being the witness to the Lord Jesus.

  10. And how initially everything seems to be going so well.

  11. You see an amazing growth in the early church.

  12. But how does that growth come about?

  13. Well, as you read through the chapters, you find that you see faithful people gathered together and praying to God.

  14. You see people preaching the word of God, such as Peter on the day of Pentecost and thousands turning to the Lord.

  15. You think this is wonderful.

  16. This is great.

  17. What a blessing to see everything going so well and the church growing in this way.

  18. But as you continue to read through the book of Acts, and especially as you come to this passage,

  19. we've been looking at where we see Steve and you see another way the church grows.

  20. And it's a surprising way.

  21. And it's maybe not the way we would want the church to grow.

  22. But it's often the case that it is through persecution that the church will grow.

  23. And you read about that.

  24. Even Jesus himself mentioned that in the Sermon on the Mount, in the Beatitudes, where he says in verse 10 of Matthew 5,

  25. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  26. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

  27. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven.

  28. For so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

  29. And that's a message that Stephen has already reminded them of here.

  30. In verse 52, as we read, which of the prophets did not your fathers persecuted?

  31. And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the righteous one.

  32. And you see so many similarities between Stephen and the Lord Jesus.

  33. And it's a reminder to us, Stephen, that this is what every Christian should desire to be like.

  34. To be more Christ-like.

  35. And so we come to the conclusion here of looking at Stephen's life by looking at Stephen the martyr.

  36. What we've seen of him so far is how he was chosen as one to serve tables.

  37. It doesn't sound very glamorous, and yet in it all, he was serving the Lord.

  38. He was a faithful man.

  39. He was full of the Spirit.

  40. And here, as we've seen in chapter 7, then we looked at the message that he brought to the people.

  41. He presented to the people what they had done before God, how they had turned away from him, and their need to repent.

  42. We see now the reaction of the people when they heard these things.

  43. They were enraged.

  44. But what we see now is that even in his martyrdom, it is the Lord who is glorified.

  45. And indeed, as we see, the word is spread.

  46. The word martyr itself comes from the word witness.

  47. It is to witness.

  48. And that is what Stephen is doing here, is bearing witness to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  49. The Lord Jesus, who himself is described in Revelation chapter 1, verse 5, as Jesus Christ, the faithful witness.

    Revelation 1:5

  50. That word witness is where martyr comes from.

  51. And so here is Stephen the martyr, bearing witness to the Lord Jesus Christ, the faithful witness.

  52. The one who freed us from our sin by his death and by his resurrection.

  53. And from the early church onwards, you see Christian martyrs such as Stephen, martyred for their faith and their witness to the Lord Jesus Christ, down through all the generations.

  54. In our own day, it's still the case that Christians are martyred around the world.

  55. As we thought of organizations such as Release International, Open Doors, Steadfast Global.

  56. Why is there a need for them?

  57. Because of the persecution the church is suffering.

  58. Places such as the Middle East, India, Nepal, many parts of Africa, North Korea.

  59. Christians are challenged on a daily basis to renounce their faith, to convert to other religions, to pay religious taxes.

  60. And ultimately many to face execution.

  61. But they remain faithful to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  62. Because they know that there are greater blessings with him.

  63. It's not just about the here and now, as we sang in Psalm 23, the Lord with us through the peaceful times.

  64. The Lord with us through that valley of the shadow of death.

  65. But our journey doesn't come to an end there.

  66. You see that in God's house, forevermore, there's a dwelling place for God's people.

  67. And that's what the life of Stephen encourages us by and reminds us of as well.

  68. So what can we take from Stephen this evening and his martyr, him being a martyr?

  69. Well, there's three things I want us to think about as we look at this.

  70. The wickedness of man, first of all.

  71. Then the grace of God in the midst of it all.

  72. And then the greater good that God can bring out of these things as well.

  73. So the first thing we see is the wickedness of man.

  74. Here is Stephen in the midst of his own life experience.

  75. He's facing up a crowd who are enraged and gnashing their teeth, grinding their teeth at him.

  76. But it says in verse 55, but he full of the Holy Spirit.

  77. The Lord is with him.

  78. Just as he is going through that verse in Psalm 23.

  79. Yet though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death.

  80. He knows that the Lord is with him.

  81. That the Lord is near.

  82. And we'll see it as we go through it.

  83. Just how powerful his vision of the Lord is.

  84. But the first thing we notice here is the analogy of the shepherd leading his sheep.

  85. And how faithful the Lord is to Stephen here.

  86. And how precious a thing that is for ourselves this evening too.

  87. That we can take heart from the experience of Stephen here.

  88. That here he is.

  89. He has had a time of blessing seeing the church grow.

  90. That time when God has led him by the still waters.

  91. But here he is now going through this valley.

  92. This time where the shadow is drawing close.

  93. And yet here he is still so assured that the Lord is with him.

  94. He is full of the Holy Spirit.

  95. And what our text this evening makes clear for us is the difference between Stephen who is trusting in the Lord.

  96. And those who are persecuting him.

  97. You see those who have heard the message and they're enraged at what they've heard.

  98. They grind their teeth.

  99. They block their ears.

  100. It says to us as well.

  101. And they rush him to take him out of the city to stone him.

  102. The gospel is so offensive to them.

  103. They want no more to do with it.

  104. They want to hear nothing else from it.

  105. But when you look at verse 55, you see the great difference between Stephen.

  106. And this is the way the Christian should be as well.

  107. That as we face up to many challenges in this world, a people who reject and even revile against the gospel.

  108. That this is how we are to be.

  109. This is our response.

  110. It says of Stephen, but he.

  111. In these simple words, it defines the difference.

  112. But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God.

  113. He was different.

  114. He was a Christian.

  115. He knew Christ and he knew Christ with him.

  116. And he knew where to look.

  117. He looked up into heaven and saw the glory of God.

  118. God, Satan does not sit idly by as the Lord is at work here in this world as well.

  119. Satan wants to snatch a people for himself.

  120. He wants a people to turn and be enraged against the gospel.

  121. And God, even though he sees his people suffering such as Stephen here.

  122. This is the hard part for us.

  123. You think, why didn't he intervene?

  124. Why didn't he miraculously protect Stephen here?

  125. Why does he allow this choice young man to be cut down in his prime?

  126. Well, it takes eyes of faith to see why.

  127. Because, as we'll see later, you see that even in the midst of this, the persecution, the suffering, the greater good of God goes on.

  128. But what you're reminded of here, too, is that that is good for Stephen in it all.

  129. He knows that there is greater to come.

  130. He has this action here where he's calm, clear-headed, articulate, even kind towards the crowd as they rush to stone him.

  131. But they are angry.

  132. They are gnarling at him.

  133. They're gnarling and grinding their teeth.

  134. They're so enraged.

  135. And this is just a reminder to us of the wickedness of man.

  136. And how often we see this again and again.

  137. Things that we cannot understand.

  138. Suffering for God's people.

  139. That we sometimes think, why?

  140. Why this way?

  141. But down through every generation, we see man's inhumanity to man.

  142. Again and again, we're reminded of the evil of this world.

  143. Time and again.

  144. You look in history, and it's there constantly for us.

  145. Every January, the 27th of January each year, is Holocaust Memorial Day.

  146. As always, a powerful reminder to us of how evil mankind can be.

  147. Millions died in awful ways.

  148. And we cannot understand some of these things.

  149. But we can learn that God is still with his people in it.

  150. And one survivor who you probably all heard of was Corrie Ten Boom.

  151. And how she spoke of the wickedness that she saw.

  152. And many others have done likewise too.

  153. But also to see the love and grace of God in it all too.

  154. And she once said this.

  155. There is no pit so deep that God's love is not deeper still.

  156. And that's the way we sometimes have to look at things.

  157. To remind ourselves that in the wickedness of mankind in this world,

  158. there is no pit so deep that God's love cannot go deeper.

  159. Regardless of the reason that hardship has come,

  160. every believer needs to be like Stephen here.

  161. A but he believer.

  162. That whatever is going on around us,

  163. whatever is going on even in our own experience,

  164. that we have this faithful view of Stephen.

  165. But he, full of the Holy Spirit,

  166. gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God.

  167. That we remind ourselves again and again

  168. that the Lord is with us always.

  169. Just as Psalm 23, such a precious Psalm to us.

  170. You go through the valley,

  171. but there's always that destination at the end of it.

  172. That dwelling place with God.

  173. And so as we ourselves,

  174. as we face up to the wickedness of man around us,

  175. whether it's in the distant lands

  176. where we pray for persecuted people,

  177. whether it's in our own nation,

  178. or even on our own doorstep,

  179. when we face up to the challenges that are around us through sin.

  180. That we don't respond with evil.

  181. That we don't respond like for like.

  182. That we make sure our eyes,

  183. our focus is fixed on the Lord.

  184. That we seek to be a glorious witness for him day by day.

  185. Praying for faithful patience and grace

  186. to be his witness to all around us.

  187. We have the wickedness of man all around us.

  188. But we're reminded certainly of the grace that overcomes.

  189. And we see what grace does in this passage.

  190. Grace is illustrated in many different ways here for us.

  191. Remarkably, you see it in the people

  192. who are gathered around even stoning Stephen.

  193. And there's one in particular who we see.

  194. And his name is Saul.

  195. And in just a few words in this passage,

  196. it says that as they stoned him,

  197. the witnesses laid down their garments,

  198. this is in verse 58,

  199. at the feet of a young man named Saul.

  200. All the people that were gathered around,

  201. he's the only one that's named.

  202. A young man named Saul.

  203. You see his name referenced then in chapter 8, verse 1.

  204. And Saul approved of his execution.

  205. And from there, he continued to persecute.

  206. He continued to go on.

  207. It says then in verse 3 of chapter 8,

  208. but Saul was ravaging the church

  209. and entering house after house.

  210. He dragged off men and women

  211. and committed them to prison.

  212. And you're beginning to think to yourself,

  213. how can grace be seen here

  214. in the person of Saul?

  215. And it's a reminder to us

  216. that when people view the grace of God at work,

  217. when people view Christians

  218. as Saul was viewing Stephen here,

  219. it doesn't mean that there's going to be

  220. an instant response.

  221. In fact, if you look at Saul here,

  222. it says his heart's going harder.

  223. He's going the other way completely.

  224. He's becoming more and more determined

  225. to persecute the church.

  226. He's going around.

  227. He's dragging them out, men and women,

  228. committing them to prison.

  229. So it's as if he's going further away.

  230. And you're saying to yourself,

  231. how can any good come out of this?

  232. Seems as if he's going further away.

  233. And yet, all you have to do

  234. is jump into chapter 9.

  235. And you see the grace of God.

  236. But Saul, still breathing threats

  237. and murders against the disciples of the Lord.

  238. He's still at it.

  239. But what happened?

  240. He met with the Lord on the road to Damascus.

  241. And his life was transformed.

  242. As a reminder to us,

  243. even as we see a persecuted people

  244. around the world,

  245. whatever it is,

  246. in foreign lands,

  247. and even in our own lands,

  248. as we see such a contempt

  249. of the Christian faith just now

  250. and so many against the Christian faith,

  251. it seems to be getting worse.

  252. It's not time to stop praying for them,

  253. but to pray even more

  254. that the persecutors would be like Saul,

  255. watching on,

  256. maybe seeming in our eyes to get worse,

  257. but that the Lord would meet them

  258. and transform them

  259. just like he transformed Saul

  260. by that wonderful grace.

  261. So we see grace at work

  262. in unbelievable ways here.

  263. We see also the grace God gives to Stephen.

  264. And you notice just how,

  265. we've sort of touched on this already,

  266. how the Lord is with him

  267. and with him in a remarkable way.

  268. And you think of those who are present here,

  269. not watching on,

  270. but those who are present with Stephen.

  271. And when you read verse 55,

  272. it says,

  273. but he,

  274. full of the Holy Spirit,

  275. gazed into heaven

  276. and saw the glory of God

  277. and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.

  278. What do we have in that verse?

  279. We've got all the members of the Trinity.

  280. They're all there.

  281. He's full of the Holy Spirit,

  282. the comforter that Jesus had promised.

  283. We see that he's looking up into heaven

  284. and he's seeing the glory of God.

  285. And at the right hand of God

  286. is Jesus,

  287. the Son,

  288. standing at the right hand of God.

  289. He's there standing,

  290. waiting for Stephen.

  291. It's a remarkable image.

  292. And he goes on to say in verse 56,

  293. and he said,

  294. behold,

  295. I see the heavens opened

  296. and the Son of Man

  297. standing at the right hand of God.

  298. Now we often read of Jesus

  299. being at the right hand of God,

  300. but he sat,

  301. sitting at the right hand of God.

  302. But here,

  303. he is at the right hand of God standing.

  304. So he's waiting

  305. just to welcome Stephen home.

  306. So we have them.

  307. They're all there.

  308. They're all present.

  309. And what a view,

  310. what a vision he's got here.

  311. What he sees is remarkable.

  312. You know,

  313. we've marveled these last few weeks,

  314. some evenings,

  315. when we see the northern lights

  316. and how spectacular they are.

  317. We lift up our gaze in the skies

  318. and you see these lights

  319. dancing in the skyline.

  320. And you think how amazing that is.

  321. And yet here,

  322. we see Stephen

  323. with a much more greater view

  324. than anyone could ever have

  325. with the northern lights.

  326. He sees the glory of God.

  327. He sees it all

  328. as he lifts his eyes

  329. up to heaven.

  330. And even in his dying moment,

  331. you see the grace of God

  332. at work in him,

  333. at work through him.

  334. Look at the words

  335. that he sees.

  336. As he's in the throes

  337. of just the last moments

  338. of his life,

  339. he's seeing these things.

  340. But he also has words

  341. to speak.

  342. And he says in verse 59,

  343. Lord Jesus,

  344. receive my spirit.

  345. And then in verse 60,

  346. he says,

  347. falling to his knees,

  348. he cried out

  349. with a loud voice,

  350. Lord,

  351. do not hold this sin

  352. against him.

  353. And again,

  354. you think,

  355. where do these words,

  356. what do they remind us of?

  357. The words of Christ

  358. as he was crucified.

  359. Father,

  360. into your hands,

  361. I commit my spirit.

  362. And Father,

  363. forgive them,

  364. for they know not

  365. what they do.

  366. They're so alike.

  367. And it's a reminder

  368. to us as well

  369. that this is how

  370. we are to be as well.

  371. We are committing ourselves

  372. into the Lord's hands,

  373. into the Lord's care

  374. at all times.

  375. And we are also

  376. to have that kind

  377. of attitude too.

  378. Lord,

  379. do not hold this sin

  380. against them.

  381. Forgive them

  382. for what they do.

  383. Charles Spurgeon

  384. once said

  385. of Stephen's death

  386. that it was

  387. full of Jesus.

  388. It's full of Jesus'

  389. sin,

  390. he said.

  391. It's full of Jesus'

  392. invoke

  393. that's called upon.

  394. It's full of Jesus'

  395. trusted.

  396. And it's full of

  397. Jesus imitated.

  398. And again,

  399. it's just such a powerful

  400. reminder to ourselves

  401. of the way we should

  402. seek to live

  403. our lives too,

  404. to be Christ-like

  405. and to know

  406. the grace

  407. of God

  408. in that way.

  409. And that's the grace

  410. that he promises

  411. to you

  412. and to me.

  413. Grace

  414. for every

  415. occasion

  416. in life.

  417. Grace

  418. to live

  419. day by day.

  420. Grace

  421. to witness

  422. grace

  423. to him

  424. day by day.

  425. Grace

  426. to die.

  427. But the Lord

  428. is with us.

  429. The grace

  430. of God

  431. is a remarkable

  432. thing.

  433. Finally,

  434. we see here too

  435. God's

  436. greater purpose

  437. in it all.

  438. No one

  439. suffers

  440. for Christ

  441. in vain.

  442. that is a great

  443. truth

  444. that we see

  445. in Stephen's

  446. life

  447. and every

  448. Christian's

  449. life as well.

  450. No one

  451. suffers

  452. for Christ

  453. in vain.

  454. Even as Stephen's

  455. life is taken

  456. from him here,

  457. God has a purpose

  458. in it all.

  459. It was Tertullian,

  460. the early church

  461. father,

  462. who said,

  463. the blood

  464. of the martyrs

  465. is the seed

  466. of the church.

  467. In other words,

  468. that even

  469. through the

  470. death of the

  471. Christians

  472. over generations,

  473. that that would

  474. be the seed

  475. of the church.

  476. That is where

  477. growth

  478. would come.

  479. And you see

  480. here that even

  481. as this

  482. persecution

  483. was done,

  484. something else

  485. happened as well.

  486. That the word

  487. of God

  488. spread.

  489. It says in

  490. verse 1 of

  491. chapter 8

  492. that there arose

  493. on that day

  494. a great

  495. persecution

  496. against the

  497. church,

  498. and they were

  499. scattered

  500. throughout the

  501. regions.

  502. The Christians

  503. were scattered,

  504. but what happened

  505. as they were

  506. scattered?

  507. Well,

  508. just go down

  509. to verse 4.

  510. Now,

  511. those who were

  512. scattered

  513. went about

  514. preaching the

  515. word.

  516. Philip went

  517. down to the

  518. city of Samaria

  519. and proclaimed

  520. to them

  521. the Christ,

  522. and there was

  523. much joy

  524. in that city.

  525. it says.

  526. Even through

  527. Stephen's

  528. death,

  529. through his

  530. witness,

  531. through his

  532. life,

  533. the church

  534. bore fruit.

  535. And you just

  536. think again

  537. of Saul

  538. and how he

  539. looked on

  540. at this

  541. stoning of

  542. Stephen and

  543. approved of

  544. it all.

  545. And yet

  546. this Saul

  547. who became

  548. Paul and

  549. who God

  550. used for

  551. the growth

  552. of the

  553. church

  554. over many,

  555. in many

  556. different

  557. places.

  558. And you

  559. think of

  560. some of

  561. the words

  562. that Paul

  563. would later

  564. speak.

  565. And how

  566. different the

  567. words that he

  568. had been

  569. saying at

  570. this time

  571. when he

  572. says in

  573. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15:58

  574. 15,

  575. verse 58,

  576. therefore,

  577. my beloved

  578. brethren,

  579. my beloved

  580. brethren,

  581. those who he

  582. had persecuted,

  583. those who he

  584. had dragged

  585. out and

  586. committed to

  587. prison,

  588. they are now

  589. my beloved

  590. brethren.

  591. And he

  592. says to

  593. them,

  594. be steadfast,

  595. immovable,

  596. always abounding

  597. in the work

  598. of the Lord,

  599. knowing that

  600. your labour

  601. is not in

  602. vain in the

  603. Lord.

  604. And you

  605. just wonder

  606. are these

  607. words linked

  608. to this,

  609. to Stephen's

  610. stoning,

  611. or looking

  612. back to the

  613. death of

  614. Christ.

  615. And you

  616. think,

  617. how many

  618. thought that

  619. that was

  620. it,

  621. that was

  622. the end,

  623. when Christ

  624. was crucified,

  625. that will

  626. finish off

  627. the church,

  628. but no,

  629. it grew.

  630. Or as

  631. Stephen is

  632. stoned,

  633. they're thinking

  634. this will put

  635. an end to

  636. the witness

  637. of the church,

  638. what happened?

  639. The seed

  640. was scattered.

  641. And so he

  642. says,

  643. your labour

  644. is not

  645. in vain

  646. in the

  647. Lord.

  648. No matter

  649. what you

  650. are doing

  651. for the

  652. Lord,

  653. it is

  654. not in

  655. vain.

  656. There have

  657. been periods

  658. in our

  659. own nation

  660. where the

  661. Christian

  662. church

  663. would seem

  664. to have

  665. been cast

  666. away in

  667. so many

  668. places.

  669. And there

  670. was a time

  671. in the

  672. 1600s when

  673. many parts

  674. of Scotland

  675. saw martyrs

  676. in their

  677. lives taken

  678. because they

  679. would not

  680. turn their

  681. back on

  682. the Lord

  683. Jesus.

  684. And our

  685. time in

  686. Dumfries was

  687. certainly a

  688. time when my

  689. eyes were

  690. opened to

  691. that,

  692. where there's

  693. many monuments

  694. to martyrs

  695. of the past.

  696. In the town

  697. centre near the

  698. bus station

  699. of Dumfries,

  700. there's a

  701. stone monument

  702. there.

  703. And on it

  704. is the name

  705. James

  706. Kirko.

  707. And he

  708. was shot

  709. in the town

  710. there in

  711. May 1685.

  712. because of

  713. his faith

  714. in the

  715. Lord Jesus.

  716. Then further

  717. down the

  718. coastline

  719. there's a

  720. town called

  721. Wigtown.

  722. And there

  723. near that

  724. town is a

  725. memorial to

  726. two ladies,

  727. two Margarets,

  728. who again

  729. were martyrs

  730. for the

  731. Christian faith,

  732. Margaret Wilson

  733. and Margaret

  734. McLaughlin.

  735. And they

  736. would not

  737. turn their

  738. back on the

  739. Lord Jesus.

  740. And so they

  741. were tied to

  742. posts out

  743. in the

  744. sand where

  745. the

  746. Solway Firth

  747. comes in.

  748. And the

  749. tide was

  750. coming in

  751. upon them

  752. and rising

  753. up.

  754. And the

  755. soldiers were

  756. telling them

  757. to renounce

  758. their faith,

  759. but they

  760. wouldn't.

  761. Instead,

  762. they sang

  763. Psalm 25,

  764. even as the

  765. tide was

  766. coming up

  767. over their

  768. head.

  769. And there

  770. they died

  771. for faith

  772. in the

  773. Lord Jesus.

  774. And that's

  775. not that

  776. long ago

  777. in our

  778. own nation.

  779. And we

  780. say to

  781. ourselves,

  782. we will

  783. never see

  784. days like

  785. that again.

  786. But even

  787. if we do,

  788. do we not

  789. still have

  790. that great

  791. hope?

  792. That hope

  793. that is ours

  794. in Christ.

  795. John Bunyan,

  796. the author of

  797. Pilgrim's

  798. Probes and

  799. other books,

  800. he spent

  801. 12 years

  802. in jail

  803. because of

  804. his faithful

  805. preaching of

  806. God's word.

  807. And he

  808. once wrote

  809. this, he

  810. said,

  811. a smile

  812. or a

  813. kind look

  814. from Christ

  815. shall be

  816. worth more

  817. than 10,000

  818. worlds.

  819. Again, he

  820. was reminding

  821. us to

  822. fix our

  823. eyes on

  824. the Lord

  825. Jesus,

  826. to keep

  827. our eyes

  828. on him

  829. and to

  830. keep that

  831. day in

  832. mind when

  833. the Lord

  834. will come.

  835. Peter 4,

  836. verse 14,

  837. it says,

  838. if you are

  839. insulted for

  840. the name

  841. of Christ,

  842. you are

  843. blessed because

  844. the spirit of

  845. glory and

  846. of God

  847. rests upon

  848. you.

  849. And that's

  850. what we see

  851. in Stephen.

  852. Even as he

  853. was stoned

  854. here, he

  855. gazed up

  856. to heaven

  857. and he

  858. saw the

  859. glory of

  860. God and

  861. Jesus

  862. standing at

  863. the right

  864. hand of

  865. God.

  866. And that

  867. is the

  868. kind of

  869. Christian

  870. that we

  871. should strive

  872. to be as

  873. well.

  874. Every one

  875. of us

  876. to be

  877. faithful in

  878. whatever we

  879. are doing

  880. for the

  881. Lord,

  882. remembering

  883. our labor

  884. is not

  885. in vain.

  886. Even when

  887. things seem

  888. to be going

  889. against us,

  890. God has

  891. a purpose

  892. and a plan

  893. in it all.

  894. And there's a

  895. greater good

  896. God

  897. at the

  898. end of

  899. it as

  900. well.

  901. Just as

  902. Stephen saw

  903. the Lord

  904. Jesus

  905. standing at

  906. the right

  907. hand of

  908. God,

  909. so every

  910. Christian

  911. remembers

  912. that the

  913. Lord will

  914. welcome

  915. his people

  916. home.

  917. That we

  918. might suffer

  919. in this

  920. world,

  921. but there

  922. is greater

  923. to come,

  924. and that

  925. is through

  926. faith in

  927. the Lord

  928. Jesus,

  929. the faith

  930. that we've

  931. seen in

  932. Stephen.

  933. Stephen the

  934. man who

  935. was a

  936. godly

  937. man and

  938. a wise

  939. man.

  940. Stephen's

  941. message was

  942. one of a

  943. real God

  944. to a

  945. real people.

  946. And Stephen

  947. the martyr

  948. saying,

  949. I looked,

  950. look,

  951. I see

  952. heaven open

  953. and the

  954. son of

  955. man standing

  956. at the

  957. right hand

  958. of God.

  959. He saw

  960. the glory

  961. of God,

  962. but remember

  963. this,

  964. he saw

  965. people around

  966. him too,

  967. and his

  968. prayer was,

  969. Lord,

  970. do not

  971. hold this,

  972. against

  973. them.

  974. So may

  975. we keep

  976. our eyes

  977. on the

  978. Lord Jesus,

  979. but keep

  980. our eyes

  981. on the

  982. world around

  983. us too,

  984. in a

  985. prayerful

  986. way,

  987. that they

  988. would not

  989. perish,

  990. but see

  991. the glory

  992. of God

  993. for themselves.

  994. Amen.

  995. Let us

  996. pray.

  997. Our

  998. Father in

  999. heaven,

  1000. we thank

  1001. you for

  1002. your word

  1003. and for

  1004. the boldness

  1005. of Stephen

  1006. as we have

  1007. seen so much

  1008. of in this

  1009. passage.

  1010. we pray,

  1011. Lord,

  1012. that you

  1013. will fill

  1014. us with

  1015. that seal

  1016. of emotion

  1017. and devotion

  1018. to those

  1019. around him,

  1020. longing,

  1021. Lord,

  1022. that they

  1023. would know

  1024. the glory

  1025. of God

  1026. in their

  1027. lives,

  1028. that that

  1029. might be

  1030. our prayer

  1031. too for

  1032. those around

  1033. us.

  1034. But too,

  1035. Lord,

  1036. we pray

  1037. that you

  1038. will keep

  1039. us with

  1040. our gaze,

  1041. our vision

  1042. fixed on

  1043. Jesus,

  1044. the one

  1045. who has

  1046. gone before

  1047. us and

  1048. prepared the

  1049. way for

  1050. us.

  1051. Lord,

  1052. bless

  1053. your

  1054. word

  1055. to us

  1056. and

  1057. pardon

  1058. our

  1059. sin

  1060. in

  1061. it

  1062. all.

  1063. We ask

  1064. it in

  1065. Jesus'

  1066. name.

  1067. Amen.

  1068. Amen.

  1069. Amen.

  1070. Amen.

  1071. Amen.

  1072. Amen.

  1073. Amen.

  1074. Amen.

  1075. Amen.

  1076. Amen.

  1077. Amen.
