  1. where we finished reading.

  2. And this encompasses the prayer of those who at that time formed the church

  3. and were concerned, obviously, for the gospel and the advance of the gospel.

  4. The book of Acts is crucial for the church and every generation.

  5. It's not that we set it above any other book of scripture, any other part of scripture,

  6. but the book of Acts is the establishing of the church in the age of the Spirit,

  7. the age of the Holy Spirit, who came down at Pentecost

  8. in accordance with a promise given in the Old Testament scriptures.

  9. And because of that, it's a book that we need to come back to again and again

  10. to remind ourselves of what it means really to belong to the church of God,

  11. what it means to belong to a church that seeks to go out with the news of the gospel

  12. to the world in which God has placed them.

  13. Because this passage itself is a passage where we find such things as imprisonments,

  14. intimidation, persecution, threats, all of these things that were faced then

  15. and are faced now and are faced in every generation by the people of God

  16. as they seek to live faithful lives and commend Christ to the particular time of day

  17. that they themselves, the time of history that they themselves actually live in.

  18. And what it did for them here as they were facing such things,

  19. it actually fed into their prayers.

  20. And one of the things this passage tells us is that they drew from the Old Testament scriptures

  21. words which were very relevant, they found relevant,

  22. to that aid to these circumstances in which they found themselves here.

  23. Example, Psalm 2 here is quoted there in verses 25 and 26.

  24. Well, they went back to Psalm 2 and found in Psalm 2 a very apt description,

  25. a very relevant portion of God's word to apply to their own generation.

  26. And that, by the way, is a reminder to us that we don't have two testaments,

  27. as you were, in our Bibles that are cut off from each other.

  28. The one flows into the other as God revealed himself down through the ages

  29. as the one God to his one covenant people.

  30. There's no church in the Old Testament then cut off,

  31. and there's a new church in the New Testament.

  32. It is God's church, God's redeemed people, God's covenant people,

  33. all the way through history.

  34. But, of course, changes are effected by the likes of the coming of Christ himself

  35. and the coming of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost

  36. to have the church now in the age of the Spirit,

  37. the age of fulfillment of all things following the death and resurrection of Christ himself.

  38. And Psalm 2 is relevant because it speaks about the antagonism against the Lord's people

  39. by the powers of the world, the political powers, even the religious powers of the world.

  40. And God's response to that is also set out in Psalm 2 and quoted here in these two verses.

  41. Now, verse 18, you first of all find orders given against gospel teaching.

  42. How relevant is that?

  43. Orders given against gospel teaching.

  44. As you see there in verse 18,

  45. the rulers called the people and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.

  46. And that charge or that order against gospel teaching is really acting against the evidence.

  47. You know, one of the things that's really frustrating but understandable in the light of Scripture

  48. is that when you present the gospel, when you witness to the gospel,

  49. when you actually speak to people about their soul and about the Lord and about all that the gospel is,

  50. you'll find that so often they actually go against what evidence is provided by God,

  51. sometimes very clear evidence of his work.

  52. For example, verse 16 here,

  53. verse 16 speaks about the miracle done to the man who had been healed.

  54. So when they came in verse 14,

  55. seeing the man who was healed standing beside them,

  56. they had nothing to say in opposition,

  57. but then commanded them to leave the council they conferred,

  58. and they asked each other then,

  59. this is still the authorities,

  60. what shall we do with these men?

  61. For that a notable sign has been performed through them

  62. is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

  63. and we cannot deny it.

  64. And then, of course,

  65. instead of saying,

  66. well, let's consider this more,

  67. let's give this more of our attention,

  68. let's really just take this as possibly

  69. something that we might have to reckon with

  70. as true and important.

  71. Instead of that,

  72. in order that it spread no further among the people,

  73. let us warn them not to speak any more in this name.

  74. And that's the frustrating thing you find still,

  75. even today.

  76. And why Psalm 2,

  77. the likes of Psalm 2,

  78. is so important.

  79. Because Psalm 2 began,

  80. as you well know by these words,

  81. why do the people rage against God?

  82. Why such a thing

  83. in the experience of God's people?

  84. And as you look at Psalm 2

  85. and the way it proceeds,

  86. why do the nations rage?

  87. And the people's plot in vain,

  88. the kings of the earth set themselves,

  89. and the rulers take counsel together.

  90. And then the Psalm actually answers the question

  91. that's posed there by saying,

  92. let us burst their bonds apart

  93. and cast away their cords from us.

  94. In other words,

  95. they're combining forces against the Lord,

  96. but it's against especially

  97. the way in which the Lord has specific commands

  98. and precepts and rules

  99. and, in fact,

  100. his whole entire word.

  101. And that,

  102. why is this right through history?

  103. Why do the nations rage?

  104. Why do the people plot in vain?

  105. Why is there such antagonism today to the gospel?

  106. Why is there such opposition

  107. to the church preaching the gospel?

  108. Why is there some opposition

  109. even in parts of the wider church

  110. to the gospel truly being preached

  111. rather than what we heard already

  112. in prayer as a social message

  113. that really at the end of the day

  114. doesn't save anybody?

  115. Well, it's because they're plotting

  116. against the Lord

  117. and against his anointed.

  118. And if you go then

  119. to the passage in Acts we're looking at,

  120. why do the Gentiles rage

  121. and the people rage in vain,

  122. plot in vain?

  123. The rulers were gathered together

  124. against the Lord

  125. and against his anointed.

  126. And the word anointed there

  127. is literally the word Christ.

  128. That's what Christ means.

  129. To plot against the Lord

  130. and against his Christ.

  131. And that really is why

  132. today there's such an opposition

  133. still against the gospel.

  134. And it always will be that way

  135. as long as human beings

  136. stand in opposition to God.

  137. Because this is a gospel

  138. that calls them to repent.

  139. A gospel that calls them

  140. to turn from their way

  141. and seek the Lord.

  142. A gospel that calls upon people

  143. to leave the way of sin

  144. and turn into the ways of righteousness.

  145. And to look to the commands of God

  146. and to the promises of God

  147. and to the whole word of God.

  148. And of course that's something

  149. that we don't naturally like.

  150. And so we turn against it

  151. and find so, so many different ways

  152. in which that opposition

  153. and antagonism to the gospel

  154. is fed into our society

  155. from different streams of thought.

  156. And it's all to do with this

  157. plot against the Lord

  158. and against his anointed.

  159. Whether it's in terms of

  160. what happens in our schools,

  161. in our education system,

  162. in our universities and colleges,

  163. any place in our society

  164. that has any semblance

  165. of truth presented to it,

  166. you will always find this reaction

  167. on the part of sadly too many people.

  168. And of course,

  169. it says there in verse 25,

  170. why did the Gentiles rage

  171. on the people's plot

  172. in vain?

  173. Futility.

  174. And yet,

  175. it's something that people

  176. continue doing.

  177. And that again takes up,

  178. as it's taken up from Psalm number 2,

  179. reminds us of what God does

  180. in the face of all that.

  181. He that sits in heaven

  182. shall laugh.

  183. The Lord shall have them

  184. in derision.

  185. And of course,

  186. that doesn't mean

  187. that the Lord is just

  188. treating this lightly,

  189. that he's just having

  190. a laugh at them,

  191. that he just finds

  192. the whole thing very amusing.

  193. When it says there,

  194. the Lord laughs at all this,

  195. what it means is that

  196. he views all of these attempts

  197. as absolutely futile

  198. because his plan

  199. and his purpose

  200. is not going to be diverted.

  201. I mentioned this

  202. on the Lord's day.

  203. His plan is not

  204. in any way affected

  205. by the opposition

  206. of the world,

  207. even of the highest authorities

  208. in any particular generation.

  209. And his own plan,

  210. as you can see there

  211. from verse 28,

  212. it's interesting

  213. that it says there,

  214. when they prayed

  215. to the Lord,

  216. what they mentioned

  217. in prayer was

  218. that Herod

  219. and Pontius Pilate

  220. along with the Gentiles

  221. and the people of Israel

  222. lauded together

  223. and gathered

  224. to do whatever

  225. your hand

  226. and your plan

  227. had predestined

  228. to take place.

  229. You see,

  230. they're finding

  231. a measure of comfort

  232. in all of this.

  233. They began the prayer

  234. as sovereign Lord.

  235. They prayed to him

  236. as the sovereign Lord

  237. in verse 24.

  238. And because they prayed

  239. to him

  240. as the one they knew

  241. as the sovereign Lord,

  242. instead of actually

  243. coming now

  244. to say

  245. Herod and Pontius Pilate

  246. together with the Gentiles

  247. and the people of Israel

  248. were gathered

  249. to do what they

  250. themselves purposed

  251. against the Lord

  252. and against your anointed,

  253. that was the case

  254. but it's actually

  255. God's plan

  256. they're carrying out.

  257. to do whatever

  258. your hand

  259. and your plan

  260. had predestined

  261. to take place.

  262. And sometimes

  263. that's where

  264. we've got to find

  265. our refuge.

  266. Find our refuge

  267. there all the time.

  268. But there are

  269. many times

  270. when we can't

  271. ourselves

  272. get beyond

  273. a certain stage

  274. in our thinking

  275. and our conclusions

  276. and coming to

  277. a conclusion

  278. as to why

  279. things are

  280. as they are

  281. and how we

  282. go about

  283. dealing with it.

  284. And so we leave

  285. it with the Lord

  286. and say

  287. Sovereign Lord

  288. it's your plan.

  289. You're carrying

  290. out your purpose.

  291. We can't understand

  292. how all of these

  293. oppositions

  294. to your gospel

  295. fit into your plan

  296. but we know

  297. it's your plan.

  298. We would want

  299. to see them changed

  300. but they still

  301. go on unchanged.

  302. So Lord

  303. give us

  304. we pray

  305. to find ourselves

  306. taking refuge

  307. within your sovereignty.

  308. You know

  309. when I

  310. started

  311. what seems

  312. many years

  313. ago now

  314. in the ministry

  315. the ministry

  316. we hadn't back

  317. the late

  318. Murdo McCauley

  319. he was still

  320. then in active

  321. ministry

  322. not in a

  323. congregation

  324. but he was

  325. still preaching

  326. and I was

  327. speaking to him

  328. one day

  329. and he said

  330. I'm just going

  331. to say this

  332. to you

  333. he said

  334. I could say

  335. much to you

  336. by way of

  337. advice

  338. from a long

  339. time in ministry

  340. but one thing

  341. you will always

  342. find

  343. is that

  344. you have to

  345. fall back

  346. on the sovereignty

  347. of God.

  348. You have to

  349. fall back

  350. on the sovereignty

  351. of God.

  352. You meet with

  353. things you didn't

  354. plan

  355. you wouldn't

  356. want to have

  357. planned.

  358. You meet with

  359. surprises

  360. you meet with

  361. changes

  362. you meet with

  363. challenges

  364. you meet with

  365. difficulties

  366. you meet with

  367. disappointments

  368. you meet with

  369. all sorts of

  370. things that

  371. challenged your

  372. soul and

  373. challenged your

  374. faith and

  375. sometimes even

  376. shake you up

  377. but you can

  378. always fall

  379. back on the

  380. sovereignty of

  381. God.

  382. And that's not

  383. you know when

  384. you fall back

  385. on the sovereignty

  386. of God it's

  387. not just ducking

  388. out of the

  389. issue.

  390. It's not that

  391. you're just

  392. refusing to

  393. think things

  394. through.

  395. What he meant

  396. by that was

  397. you've thought

  398. things through

  399. you've prayed

  400. over things

  401. you still believe

  402. in God

  403. you pray for

  404. his blessing

  405. but you reach

  406. the point where

  407. you've done

  408. that and still

  409. you have all

  410. of this to

  411. face.

  412. fall back

  413. on his

  414. sovereignty

  415. and of

  416. course in

  417. our personal

  418. lives that

  419. really is so

  420. important isn't

  421. it?

  422. And that really

  423. is what happened

  424. at the cross

  425. itself.

  426. There is the

  427. world's view of

  428. the cross come

  429. down from the

  430. cross and we

  431. will believe.

  432. Do it the way

  433. that we prefer

  434. the way we

  435. think best.

  436. Do it in

  437. accordance with

  438. our ideology.

  439. let our

  440. ideology actually

  441. shape what

  442. the cross

  443. is, what

  444. Jesus Christ

  445. is, who

  446. he is, what

  447. he's in the

  448. world for, what

  449. salvation is, what

  450. the Bible is

  451. about.

  452. Do it this

  453. way and we

  454. will believe.

  455. Well that's

  456. really the world

  457. of today and

  458. what the world

  459. is saying by

  460. that is well

  461. we believe in

  462. our own way

  463. anyway and

  464. we're not going

  465. to believe

  466. anything else.

  467. Now sovereign

  468. Lord he says

  469. they say

  470. sovereign Lord

  471. who made the

  472. heaven and

  473. the earth

  474. and who

  475. through the

  476. mouth of our

  477. father David

  478. said by the

  479. Holy Spirit

  480. now Lord look

  481. upon their

  482. threats and

  483. grant to your

  484. servants to

  485. continue to

  486. speak your

  487. word with

  488. all boldness.

  489. So the

  490. orders against

  491. gospel teaching

  492. are very

  493. applicable to

  494. the situation

  495. you and I

  496. face.

  497. It doesn't

  498. matter where

  499. you look

  500. around in

  501. society you'll

  502. find people

  503. in power,

  504. people of

  505. influence,

  506. people who

  507. are very

  508. persuasive in

  509. actually getting

  510. others to join

  511. their bandwagon

  512. whatever it is

  513. and against the

  514. gospel you'll

  515. find so many

  516. joining these

  517. campaigns whether

  518. it's in

  519. education,

  520. medical issues,

  521. very many other

  522. aspects of our

  523. society's life.

  524. people of

  525. God.

  526. But you come

  527. back to the

  528. way that it's

  529. all fitting

  530. together in

  531. God's plan and

  532. you wait upon

  533. the Lord to

  534. answer your

  535. prayers in due

  536. time.

  537. And that's

  538. where you come

  539. to the prayers

  540. that they then

  541. prayed.

  542. And one thing

  543. that struck me

  544. during the

  545. prayers here

  546. actually was how

  547. obviously this

  548. passage had

  549. registered with

  550. too many who

  551. were praying

  552. because they

  553. both mentioned

  554. at least once

  555. if not more

  556. the whole

  557. emphasis here

  558. on boldness.

  559. The boldness

  560. of these people

  561. we began reading

  562. at verse 13.

  563. When they saw

  564. the boldness of

  565. Peter and John

  566. and perceived

  567. that they were

  568. uneducated common

  569. men they were

  570. astonished.

  571. And where we

  572. finished in

  573. verse 31 the

  574. place was shaken

  575. they were all

  576. filled with the

  577. Holy Spirit and

  578. continued to speak

  579. the word of God

  580. with boldness.

  581. What is it to

  582. speak the word

  583. of God with

  584. boldness?

  585. What is this

  586. boldness that

  587. they were praying

  588. for more of?

  589. What is this

  590. boldness that you

  591. and I have the

  592. privilege of

  593. knowing for

  594. ourselves and

  595. of exercising

  596. ourselves?

  597. Well it's not

  598. the boldness of

  599. the world.

  600. It's not the

  601. boldness of

  602. aggressiveness.

  603. It's not the

  604. boldness of

  605. speech you find

  606. in people shouting

  607. down the arguments

  608. of others.

  609. It's not boldness

  610. of self-confidence

  611. in our own

  612. ability.

  613. It's not the

  614. boldness of

  615. human intellect.

  616. It's not the

  617. boldness of

  618. anything other

  619. than confidence

  620. in God.

  621. That's what it's

  622. meant by

  623. boldness.

  624. It's the

  625. boldness that

  626. comes through

  627. faith through

  628. trust in God.

  629. Boldness that

  630. his word is

  631. truth.

  632. Boldness that

  633. he is always

  634. sovereign and

  635. right.

  636. Boldness that

  637. the gospel will

  638. not return to

  639. him void.

  640. It will

  641. accomplish the

  642. purposes of

  643. God.

  644. Some will be

  645. hardened under

  646. it.

  647. Some will

  648. be melted.

  649. Some will

  650. be saved.

  651. Some will

  652. be lost.

  653. But God

  654. will not be

  655. mocked and

  656. God will not

  657. be diverted

  658. from his

  659. purpose.

  660. And you see

  661. they lifted up

  662. their voices

  663. together.

  664. They lifted up

  665. there in verse

  666. 24.

  667. When they

  668. heard it,

  669. they lifted up

  670. their voices

  671. together to

  672. God and

  673. said,

  674. Sovereign

  675. Lord.

  676. I didn't

  677. find any of

  678. those people

  679. saying,

  680. well,

  681. we need

  682. to pray

  683. to God,

  684. but you

  685. guys are

  686. in charge

  687. of the

  688. meeting.

  689. You're the

  690. ones who are

  691. doing the

  692. prayer.

  693. We'll just

  694. follow.

  695. They all

  696. lifted up

  697. their voices

  698. together to

  699. God and

  700. said they

  701. were united

  702. in praying to

  703. God and

  704. calling upon

  705. the Lord.

  706. They all

  707. joined in the

  708. prayers.

  709. They all

  710. joined in,

  711. whether spoken

  712. or otherwise,

  713. but they were

  714. all part of

  715. that movement

  716. of prayer.

  717. prayer.

  718. That's why

  719. we're here

  720. tonight.

  721. We had two

  722. men engaged

  723. in prayer

  724. audibly,

  725. but you were

  726. all praying,

  727. weren't you?

  728. We're all part

  729. of praying

  730. to God.

  731. And the more

  732. the Lord

  733. actually impresses

  734. on us the

  735. need for boldness

  736. as it is in

  737. our particular

  738. day to answer

  739. the taunts

  740. and the aggression

  741. of the world,

  742. that's where we

  743. come together

  744. to pray.

  745. one of the

  746. great things

  747. about having

  748. this meeting

  749. in the middle

  750. of the week

  751. is that we

  752. come together

  753. to pray,

  754. and being

  755. together to

  756. pray is an

  757. inestimable

  758. privilege.

  759. You can do

  760. a lot of

  761. praying on

  762. your own,

  763. and you have

  764. to do,

  765. and I have

  766. to do a lot

  767. of praying

  768. on our own

  769. if we're really

  770. in that

  771. relationship with

  772. God that

  773. seeks as

  774. blessing as

  775. we trust we

  776. do.

  777. But there's

  778. something

  779. particularly

  780. special,

  781. and something

  782. particularly

  783. noteworthy

  784. about being

  785. as they

  786. were here

  787. lifting up

  788. their voices

  789. together to

  790. God.

  791. All of us

  792. gathered together

  793. and joined

  794. in mentally

  795. and spiritually

  796. with what is

  797. ascending to

  798. God by way

  799. of worship

  800. and appeal

  801. in prayer.

  802. prayer.

  803. Sometimes

  804. perhaps we

  805. are over

  806. critical of

  807. churches or

  808. congregations

  809. that are full

  810. of amens

  811. during the

  812. time that

  813. people pray.

  814. Certainly

  815. that can be

  816. overdone,

  817. there's no

  818. doubt.

  819. But nevertheless,

  820. reasonably done,

  821. it's a good

  822. indicator,

  823. isn't it,

  824. that people

  825. are actually

  826. following what's

  827. being spoken

  828. in prayer by

  829. those who are

  830. praying publicly,

  831. and their

  832. hearts are

  833. engaged in it

  834. and their

  835. minds are

  836. engaged in it

  837. and they're

  838. actually being

  839. together,

  840. joined together

  841. in that

  842. concert of

  843. prayer,

  844. in that

  845. corporate

  846. prayer,

  847. following those

  848. who may be

  849. individually engaged

  850. in it publicly.

  851. In any case,

  852. that's what they

  853. were doing here.

  854. They lifted up

  855. their voices

  856. together to

  857. God and

  858. said,

  859. Sovereign

  860. Lord,

  861. we pray

  862. to you.

  863. that is

  864. where we

  865. have our

  866. comfort and

  867. our boldness

  868. from,

  869. from being

  870. together and

  871. being together

  872. and lifting up

  873. our voices

  874. to God.

  875. I think the

  876. days in which

  877. we live

  878. certainly call

  879. for gathered

  880. prayer,

  881. for concerted

  882. prayer,

  883. for congregational

  884. prayer,

  885. for gatherings

  886. for prayer,

  887. and in

  888. facing that

  889. world in

  890. all its

  891. antagonism

  892. to the

  893. gospel.

  894. One of the

  895. great privileges

  896. and antidotes

  897. that we have

  898. to that,

  899. one of the

  900. counteractions

  901. to the

  902. actions of

  903. a hostile

  904. world,

  905. is to be

  906. concerted in

  907. prayer together

  908. and to value

  909. the time

  910. when we can

  911. be together

  912. to pray to

  913. God.

  914. So,

  915. Sovereign

  916. Lord,

  917. they saw

  918. that as

  919. significant

  920. against the

  921. background of

  922. Psalm 2.

  923. Grant

  924. that you,

  925. your people,

  926. grant to

  927. us,

  928. Lord,

  929. to speak

  930. your word

  931. with all

  932. boldness.

  933. Now,

  934. it might have

  935. been some

  936. people that

  937. would advise

  938. you against

  939. that.

  940. Here they were

  941. facing

  942. imprisonment,

  943. intimidation,

  944. and threat,

  945. and persecution,

  946. and yet what

  947. do they want

  948. to do?

  949. They want to

  950. speak more

  951. with more

  952. boldness.

  953. Some might

  954. have advised

  955. them,

  956. let's just

  957. keep things

  958. quiet for a

  959. while.

  960. Let's not

  961. just be as

  962. forthright in

  963. presenting these

  964. claims of

  965. Christ.

  966. No,

  967. that's not

  968. what they

  969. went.

  970. They went

  971. the other

  972. way altogether.

  973. Now,

  974. they said,

  975. let's grant

  976. to your

  977. servants,

  978. Lord,

  979. look upon

  980. their threats

  981. and grant

  982. to your

  983. servants to

  984. continue to

  985. speak your

  986. word with

  987. all boldness

  988. while you

  989. stretch out

  990. your hand

  991. to heal

  992. and signs

  993. and wonders

  994. are performed.

  995. It wasn't

  996. a time

  997. to be

  998. quiet.

  999. And isn't

  1000. it interesting

  1001. as well

  1002. and significant

  1003. that despite

  1004. having been

  1005. so abused

  1006. and so badly

  1007. treated,

  1008. they didn't

  1009. pray to the

  1010. Lord for

  1011. vengeance.

  1012. They didn't

  1013. pray to the

  1014. Lord that

  1015. God would

  1016. come and

  1017. punish these

  1018. people who

  1019. had done

  1020. such things

  1021. to them.

  1022. No,

  1023. they prayed

  1024. for healings

  1025. for them.

  1026. they prayed

  1027. for their

  1028. well-being.

  1029. They prayed

  1030. that God

  1031. would be

  1032. merciful to

  1033. them,

  1034. that God

  1035. would turn

  1036. them into

  1037. his way.

  1038. And that,

  1039. of course,

  1040. is for our

  1041. context as

  1042. well,

  1043. as we

  1044. follow the

  1045. example and

  1046. the pattern

  1047. that our

  1048. Lord himself

  1049. said.

  1050. Colossians,

  1051. remember

  1052. Colossians

    Colossians 4 chapter mention

  1053. chapter 4

  1054. gives us

  1055. that spirit

  1056. of prayer

  1057. and of not

  1058. just of

  1059. prayer but

  1060. also of

  1061. speaking to

  1062. people and

  1063. witnessing to

  1064. people for

  1065. the gospel.

  1066. Colossians

    Colossians 4:5–6

  1067. chapter 4

  1068. verses 5

  1069. to 6,

  1070. conduct

  1071. yourselves

  1072. wisely

  1073. towards

  1074. outsiders,

  1075. making the

  1076. best use

  1077. of the

  1078. time.

  1079. Let your

  1080. speech

  1081. always be

  1082. gracious,

  1083. seasoned

  1084. with salt,

  1085. so that you

  1086. may know

  1087. how you

  1088. ought to

  1089. answer

  1090. each

  1091. person.

  1092. That's

  1093. really just

  1094. following the

  1095. example of

  1096. the Lord

  1097. himself,

  1098. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  1099. chapter 2,

  1100. which tells

  1101. us that

  1102. when he

  1103. was reviled,

  1104. he did

  1105. not respond

  1106. by reviling

  1107. again in

  1108. return,

  1109. but he

  1110. committed

  1111. himself to

  1112. him who

  1113. judges

  1114. righteously,

  1115. to him

  1116. who was

  1117. the father,

  1118. his father

  1119. had sent

  1120. him into

  1121. the world.

  1122. And so

  1123. here is

  1124. the spirit

  1125. of speech

  1126. as well as

  1127. of prayer,

  1128. as you

  1129. find it

  1130. brought out

  1131. for us

  1132. there in

  1133. the pattern

  1134. that Jesus

  1135. himself

  1136. said.

  1137. And there's

  1138. God's

  1139. answer in

  1140. verse 31

  1141. and what an

  1142. answer it

  1143. was.

  1144. When they

  1145. had prayed,

  1146. the place

  1147. in which they

  1148. were gathered

  1149. together was

  1150. shaken,

  1151. and they

  1152. were all

  1153. filled with

  1154. the Holy

  1155. Spirit and

  1156. continued to

  1157. speak the

  1158. word of

  1159. God with

  1160. boldness.

  1161. That was

  1162. God saying,

  1163. I've heard

  1164. you,

  1165. and this is

  1166. my answer.

  1167. They were

  1168. asking God

  1169. to enable

  1170. them to

  1171. continue to

  1172. speak with

  1173. boldness.

  1174. That's what

  1175. he enabled

  1176. them to

  1177. do,

  1178. but he

  1179. gave a

  1180. sign of

  1181. it by

  1182. the place

  1183. that they

  1184. were gathered

  1185. in was

  1186. actually shaken

  1187. and they

  1188. were all

  1189. filled with

  1190. the Holy

  1191. Spirit.

  1192. That has

  1193. happened,

  1194. of course,

  1195. at other

  1196. times in

  1197. the history

  1198. of the

  1199. church as

  1200. well,

  1201. even within

  1202. our own

  1203. island here.

  1204. I've

  1205. never been

  1206. in a

  1207. situation

  1208. where that's

  1209. actually

  1210. happened,

  1211. but I

  1212. did meet

  1213. some in

  1214. the course

  1215. of my

  1216. life thus

  1217. far who

  1218. were in

  1219. that kind

  1220. of situation,

  1221. who were

  1222. in a

  1223. building,

  1224. usually

  1225. somebody's

  1226. home,

  1227. and where

  1228. the Holy

  1229. Spirit's

  1230. power and

  1231. presence was

  1232. so evident

  1233. there that

  1234. people felt

  1235. the place

  1236. itself

  1237. vibrating,

  1238. trembling,

  1239. God was

  1240. there.

  1241. God was

  1242. manifesting

  1243. himself there.

  1244. I wonder

  1245. what we

  1246. say tonight,

  1247. if it had

  1248. happened here,

  1249. what would

  1250. we then say

  1251. when we went

  1252. out into the

  1253. world?

  1254. Well, it

  1255. might be

  1256. something you'd

  1257. find very

  1258. difficult to

  1259. describe,

  1260. I'm sure,

  1261. but the

  1262. reality of

  1263. that would

  1264. be evident

  1265. through your

  1266. life and

  1267. through your

  1268. witness much

  1269. more than

  1270. if it had

  1271. never happened

  1272. at all,

  1273. because what

  1274. it says is

  1275. the place

  1276. they were

  1277. in was

  1278. filled with

  1279. the Holy

  1280. Spirit,

  1281. where they

  1282. were gathered,

  1283. it was shaken,

  1284. they were

  1285. filled with

  1286. the Holy

  1287. Spirit,

  1288. and continued

  1289. to speak

  1290. the word

  1291. of God

  1292. with boldness.

  1293. It came

  1294. through in

  1295. their speech

  1296. following this

  1297. incident,

  1298. as they went

  1299. out with the

  1300. gospel to the

  1301. world,

  1302. and their

  1303. boldness

  1304. was spirit-filled

  1305. boldness.

  1306. One of the

  1307. old commenters

  1308. from long,

  1309. long ago,

  1310. John Chrysostom,

  1311. who lived

  1312. from 347

  1313. to 407

  1314. AD,

  1315. he comments

  1316. just on this

  1317. particular passage

  1318. here,

  1319. this verse,

  1320. that they were

  1321. filled with

  1322. the Holy

  1323. Spirit,

  1324. continued to

  1325. speak with

  1326. boldness,

  1327. the shaking,

  1328. he said,

  1329. of this

  1330. place,

  1331. made them

  1332. all the more

  1333. unshaken,

  1334. the shaking

  1335. of this

  1336. place,

  1337. made them

  1338. all the more

  1339. unshaken,

  1340. unshaken in

  1341. their commitment

  1342. to the gospel,

  1343. commitment to

  1344. the Lord,

  1345. in their

  1346. determination to

  1347. speak with

  1348. all boldness.

  1349. Nothing

  1350. assures us

  1351. as the

  1352. evidence of

  1353. God's

  1354. presence,

  1355. and God's

  1356. blessing,

  1357. assures us

  1358. that when we

  1359. go out with

  1360. the gospel,

  1361. whether it's

  1362. in preaching

  1363. ministry or

  1364. in your own

  1365. witness to

  1366. God,

  1367. the presence

  1368. of God,

  1369. the assurance

  1370. of God,

  1371. the ability

  1372. to speak

  1373. tactfully,

  1374. and the way

  1375. we saw in

  1376. Colossians

  1377. there,

  1378. but with

  1379. boldness,

  1380. because your

  1381. boldness comes

  1382. from knowing

  1383. who your

  1384. God is,

  1385. from knowing

  1386. where your

  1387. life is

  1388. anchored,

  1389. from knowing

  1390. what the

  1391. gospel is,

  1392. what his

  1393. promises are,

  1394. and from

  1395. knowing that

  1396. his word

  1397. will never

  1398. return to

  1399. him void

  1400. or empty.

  1401. Let's pray.

  1402. We give

  1403. thanks to

  1404. our Lord

  1405. God that

  1406. you are

  1407. almighty,

  1408. that your

  1409. power is

  1410. so great

  1411. that you

  1412. could easily

  1413. shake this

  1414. place to

  1415. its foundations,

  1416. whether it

  1417. you will to

  1418. do so.

  1419. We pray,

  1420. Lord, that

  1421. you would

  1422. grant to

  1423. us, as we

  1424. have thought

  1425. upon this

  1426. great passage,

  1427. as we

  1428. have thought

  1429. upon your

  1430. people in

  1431. these times

  1432. when they

  1433. experience such

  1434. a power and

  1435. blessing from

  1436. God.

  1437. O Lord, help

  1438. us, we pray,

  1439. to be together

  1440. in prayer,

  1441. even if we're

  1442. not together,

  1443. actually gathered

  1444. as we are

  1445. here tonight.

  1446. Nevertheless,

  1447. Lord, give us

  1448. to be bound

  1449. together by

  1450. your spirit

  1451. in common

  1452. prayer.

  1453. prayer.

  1454. We ask, O

  1455. Lord, that

  1456. the blessing

  1457. that we seek

  1458. from this

  1459. passage for

  1460. ourselves would

  1461. be evident to

  1462. us in days

  1463. to come.

  1464. Lord, grant

  1465. us that

  1466. boldness.

  1467. Grant us

  1468. that confidence

  1469. in your

  1470. word.

  1471. Grant us

  1472. that confidence

  1473. in yourself.

  1474. Grant us

  1475. the speech,

  1476. Lord, by

  1477. which we

  1478. would make

  1479. Christ known

  1480. to the world

  1481. of our day.

  1482. Give us

  1483. confidence

  1484. against the

  1485. confidence of

  1486. the world.

  1487. Give us the

  1488. boldness of

  1489. your spirit,

  1490. O Lord,

  1491. against the

  1492. boldness of

  1493. unbelief and

  1494. of atheism and

  1495. of antagonism to

  1496. your great name.

  1497. We ask all of

  1498. these things,

  1499. and now as we

  1500. confess our sins,

  1501. seeking pardon

  1502. and cleansing

  1503. for Jesus'

  1504. sake.

  1505. Amen.
