  1. Welcome, too, to those tuning in online. We know there's many tuning in online as well, as we all pray God's blessing on our time together.

  2. So we're going to begin our worship by singing to God's praise.

  3. And our first singing is Psalm 67, and the tune is Selma.

  4. We're going to sing the whole of this psalm.

  5. It's a psalm, it's a prayer, and it's a great prayer to have, that the Lord would be with us as we meet together, and on all his people today as they gather to worship.

  6. Lord, bless and pity us, shine on us with thy face, that the earth thy way and nations all may know thy saving grace.

  7. We're going to stand to sing to God's praise.

  8. Amen.

  9. Let people praise.

  10. Let people praise.

  11. Let people praise.

  12. Let them praise.

  13. Let them praise.

  14. Let them praise.

  15. Let them praise.

  16. First pour.

  17. The earth.

  18. The earth.

  19. The earth

  20. Are you shall unit.

  21. God find your honor.

  22. God shall bless things send.

  23. God shall us bless, men shall live near

  24. until our status end.

  25. Amen.

  26. Well, we're going to come to God and pray now,

  27. so we'll bow our heads in a word of prayer.

  28. Our gracious Father in heaven,

  29. we thank you for this, your day.

  30. We thank you to be able to come in and worship together,

  31. to sing these words of praise.

  32. And they are really a prayer that we offer up

  33. in song to you,

  34. for they remind us of what we do

  35. as we come to worship.

  36. We come to know that you are here with us

  37. as we meet.

  38. And we pray, Lord, that you will indeed bless

  39. and pity us and shine upon us

  40. with your face anew today,

  41. that we will know your goodness and your love

  42. and your mercy towards us,

  43. that you have been so good to us in so many ways.

  44. We thank you for the week that we have had

  45. and the beautiful weather we have enjoyed.

  46. It's been a reminder to us, Lord,

  47. of the beauty of your creation

  48. as we see the sun rise and set in all its glory.

  49. A reminder to us as well, Lord,

  50. that you are the one who has made all these things,

  51. that you are the one who keeps all of these things,

  52. that every day and every moment of every day

  53. is a time appointed by you.

  54. And so we thank you for this time of worship.

  55. We thank you for our family service together

  56. as we give thanks for all of your goodness to us

  57. even over this past year,

  58. especially thinking of the Explorers and the Sunday School

  59. and all the work done with our young people.

  60. We do rejoice, O Lord,

  61. in coming together here as a people.

  62. We rejoice, O Lord,

  63. in seeing so many coming together to worship you.

  64. And we do thank you for all who helped

  65. to make these things possible,

  66. for all the volunteers and helpers

  67. who have resumed Explorers over this last year

  68. and who have helped with Sunday School over the past year

  69. and indeed many years,

  70. for all who have prayed for the work

  71. and for all who have helped over the past number of years, Lord,

  72. for all the work done among your young people.

  73. We thank you for it all.

  74. And we pray for those who have helped, Lord,

  75. that you will encourage them and strengthen them

  76. as they continue to do so much for our congregation.

  77. And we above all pray today for all our young people.

  78. We thank you for every one of them

  79. and every family and home represented here.

  80. We do give you thanks, O Lord,

  81. that together we can come and praise your name

  82. and give thanks for all that you have done for us,

  83. especially through your own Son, Jesus Christ.

  84. We thank you that you sent him into this world,

  85. that he would be a saviour for it.

  86. And may we know him as our saviour.

  87. And as we come to your word today,

  88. that you would bless it to all of us together,

  89. here in the church and also in the hall next door as well,

  90. that you would be with us, Lord,

  91. as we open up your word and share from it

  92. and hear of the greatness of your love,

  93. that God so loved the world

  94. that he sent his own Son.

  95. So may that be blessed to us all.

  96. We do pray for all our families and our friends

  97. and communities at this time.

  98. We especially remember those who maybe are unwell just now

  99. or in hospital or recovering at home.

  100. We pray, Lord, that you will surround them and help them

  101. and be near to them day by day.

  102. We especially give thanks, O Lord,

  103. for Willie Graham being back in the hospital in Stornway

  104. after a time away on the mainland.

  105. And we thank you for the progress he's made.

  106. And we pray that you will continue to watch over him

  107. and more again, the family too,

  108. as we commit them to you.

  109. May your hand be over them

  110. and upon all who need you in different ways at this time too.

  111. Hear all our prayers, Lord,

  112. and guide us in our worship

  113. and give us hearts that are filled with thankfulness

  114. for all of your goodness

  115. as we ask it all with the forgiveness of our sins.

  116. In Jesus' name, amen.

  117. Well, in Explorers, you've been doing a lot over the last year.

  118. It's been great to see the Explorers group

  119. starting again over the past year.

  120. It's great to see so many of you here today as well

  121. and families sitting downstairs and upstairs as well together.

  122. And today as we think of that word, Explorers,

  123. what is it called to mind?

  124. When you think of the word Explorer or Explorers,

  125. what comes to your mind?

  126. Well, as I was thinking about that this week,

  127. something that came to my mind was

  128. Explorers are people who go on journeys.

  129. You often think of Explorers maybe in the past

  130. who went to far off lands and explored new places

  131. and sought to find maybe new parts of the world

  132. or exploring for new resources

  133. or different things like that.

  134. You think of them maybe getting all their gear together

  135. and maybe going on a ship,

  136. sailing to a far off place

  137. and searching for new lands.

  138. Something else that's called to mind

  139. was maybe people who go exploring,

  140. looking for treasure.

  141. Does anybody have a metal detector?

  142. Anybody ever used a metal detector?

  143. Sometimes you see people going out on a beach.

  144. There's some people putting up their hands.

  145. They go out on a beach

  146. and they take a metal detector

  147. to see if they can find something on the beach.

  148. Maybe long lost treasure,

  149. it's their hope.

  150. But usually it's just a rusty bit of metal

  151. or something like that we find

  152. when we go out treasure hunting.

  153. But it's this idea of exploring,

  154. traveling, traveling, searching,

  155. looking for something

  156. or looking for somewhere, some place.

  157. Exploring, it's exciting,

  158. it's rewarding

  159. and it's something that many people love to do.

  160. And I hope that's something

  161. that everyone who's been coming

  162. to the Explorers,

  163. to Sunday School,

  164. but also to church week by week.

  165. That's something that we love doing

  166. because it's exciting,

  167. it's rewarding

  168. and we love to be together

  169. to worship God above everything else.

  170. Because above all,

  171. as we explore

  172. and as we come to Explorers,

  173. what we want to be doing

  174. is hearing and seeing

  175. and exploring something

  176. that's really precious,

  177. really special,

  178. and that's the love of God.

  179. And that's what we're going to be thinking

  180. about today in our service,

  181. the love of God.

  182. Like John 3, 16 says to us,

  183. for God so loved the world

  184. that he gave his only son

  185. that whoever believes in him

  186. should not perish

  187. but have eternal life.

  188. That's going to be the theme

  189. of our service today,

  190. that verse.

  191. But what do you think of

  192. when you think of love?

  193. What does love mean?

  194. Many people have different ideas

  195. of what love means.

  196. Some people will say,

  197. I love ice cream.

  198. I love chocolate.

  199. I love to play football.

  200. But is that really love?

  201. And is that a deep love

  202. like we want to explore?

  203. How would you describe love?

  204. Well, children were once asked,

  205. children between the age of four and eight,

  206. a group of them were once asked

  207. to say and describe,

  208. what is love?

  209. And they came up with a number

  210. of different answers.

  211. One child said,

  212. love is when you go out to eat

  213. and give somebody most of your chips

  214. without expecting anything in return.

  215. You ever go out for food

  216. and you have somebody with you

  217. and they help yourself too,

  218. all your food,

  219. and you just happily give it to them

  220. and you don't expect anything in return.

  221. That's a kind of love, isn't it?

  222. Somebody else said,

  223. love is when mum gives dad

  224. the best piece of the meat.

  225. Maybe mum will take the little scraps

  226. that are left over,

  227. but she'll give to dad

  228. the nice chunky bits of meat.

  229. One child described love in that way.

  230. Another person said,

  231. love is when your puppy licks your face

  232. even when you've left them alone all day.

  233. Does anybody have that?

  234. When maybe you come home from school,

  235. the first thing that happens

  236. is the dog will jump into your lap

  237. and start licking your face.

  238. Even though you haven't been with them all day,

  239. there's this idea of love.

  240. So think about that.

  241. What is love?

  242. How would you answer that question yourself?

  243. Well, if we really want to know what love is,

  244. the place that we have to explore and look to

  245. is the Bible, God's word.

  246. Because God not only tells us what his love is,

  247. he shows us what his love is.

  248. And that's what this verse is all about,

  249. that God tells us about his love,

  250. but that he also shows us his love.

  251. There was one other answer I want to share with you

  252. that the children gave to that question,

  253. what is love?

  254. One child said this,

  255. God could have said magic words

  256. to make the nails fall off the cross,

  257. but he didn't.

  258. And isn't that a good description of what love is?

  259. God could have saved Jesus on the cross.

  260. He could have taken him down off the cross,

  261. but he didn't.

  262. Because he gave him his own son

  263. that we might have eternal life.

  264. And that's a very precious love.

  265. And that's what we're going to explore here in the church.

  266. And as you go through to the tweenies in a moment as well,

  267. we'll be exploring more of what the love of God is.

  268. And that's our prayer that we will all come

  269. to know the love of God.

  270. Well, before we go on,

  271. we're going to sing in a moment in Psalm 100,

  272. but before we do,

  273. we're going to say the Lord's Prayer together.

  274. So let's say the Lord's Prayer.

  275. Amen.

  276. But we're going to sing together again now to God's praise.

  277. We're going to sing in Psalm 100.

  278. Psalm 100.

  279. We'll sing together in that psalm.

  280. And during this singing,

  281. the tweenies can go out to the hall then.

  282. So Psalm 100.

  283. And the tune is Carlisle.

  284. Shout to the Lord with joy,

  285. all who to earth belong.

  286. Adore the Lord with joyful hearts

  287. and come to him in song.

  288. We'll sing the whole of this psalm.

  289. We stand to sing to God's praise.

  290. Amen.

  291. Amen.

  292. Amen.

  293. Amen.

  294. functions everywhere in impossible to respond.

  295. Amen.

  296. setzen appry to the Lord with joy,

  297. all who do e'er beyond.

  298. Amen.

  299. And the tune is all you're at,

  300. and with joyful hearts and grant

  301. where you are at,

  302. with joyful hearts and grant

  303. and grant to him in song.

  304. For the Lord with joyful heart

  305. And come to Him in song

  306. Know that the Lord is God

  307. He made us as His own

  308. We are the sheep for whom He cares

  309. And strength of His sorrow

  310. And tired His games with grace

  311. His torches with thankfulness

  312. Your praises gladly sing to Him

  313. His name forevermore

  314. For God the Lord is great

  315. His love is ever sure

  316. His constant truth and faithfulness

  317. Through every age endure

  318. We're going to read some of God's word together

  319. John 3 verse 16 to verse 21

    John 3:16

  320. John 3 verse 16 to verse 21

    John 3:16

  321. If you've got the order of service

  322. It's in the middle of that

  323. John 3 verse 16 to 21

    John 3:16–21

  324. For God so loved the world

  325. That He gave His only Son

  326. That whoever believes in Him

  327. Should not perish

  328. But have eternal life

  329. For God did not send His Son

  330. Into the world to condemn the world

  331. But in order that the world

  332. Might be saved through Him

  333. Whoever believes in Him

  334. Is not condemned

  335. But whoever does not believe

  336. Is condemned already

  337. Because he has not believed

  338. In the name of the only Son of God

  339. And this is a judgment

  340. The light has come into the world

  341. And the people love the darkness

  342. Rather than the light

  343. Because their works were evil

  344. For everyone who does wicked things

  345. Hates the light

  346. And does not come to the light

  347. Lest his works should be exposed

  348. But whoever does what is true

  349. Comes to the light

  350. So it may clearly be seen

  351. That his works have been carried out

  352. In God

  353. There's a wonderful passage

  354. Especially John 3 verse 16

    John 3:16

  355. It's a very famous verse

  356. A verse that so many people

  357. All over the world know

  358. But the question often is

  359. Do we know the love of that verse?

  360. Do we know the God of that verse

  361. And the Son that He gave

  362. To show His love?

  363. Because when you think about

  364. How do you show someone

  365. You love them?

  366. There can be many ways

  367. We can perhaps try and show

  368. Our love to people

  369. Sometimes it's by doing

  370. Nice things for them

  371. So we think about everybody

  372. Who helps and volunteers

  373. With explorers and Sunday school

  374. On a week to week basis

  375. Why do they do it?

  376. Well it's because

  377. First of all they love God

  378. And then they love other people

  379. They love you

  380. Who come to the Sunday school

  381. And explorers

  382. And they want to share with you

  383. That love of God

  384. So that's a good way

  385. To show someone

  386. That you love them

  387. Sometimes it's by saying

  388. Nice things

  389. People enjoy hearing someone

  390. Saying nice things to them

  391. But perhaps the most common way

  392. Of showing that you love someone

  393. Is by giving them something

  394. Giving them something special

  395. And so how do we think about

  396. God showing His love to us?

  397. He has spoken to us

  398. Through His word

  399. But above all

  400. He has done something for us

  401. He has given someone for us

  402. And that's what this verse tells us

  403. God loves His people so much

  404. And He wanted to show His love

  405. And to show His love

  406. He sent His Son into this world

  407. And even if for a moment

  408. We explore that verse itself

  409. John 3.16

  410. It tells us so much

  411. And there's a few questions

  412. We could ask of that verse

  413. Who is this verse about?

  414. Do we think first of all

  415. It's about ourselves?

  416. If we do

  417. We're maybe starting at the wrong place

  418. Because this verse

  419. Is all about God

  420. For God so loved the world

  421. It's a verse about God

  422. What does God do?

  423. Well it tells us here

  424. He loves

  425. God so loved the world

  426. God loves

  427. Who does God love?

  428. He loves the world

  429. He loves His people

  430. He loves all His people

  431. And then it goes on

  432. And what did God do

  433. To show His love?

  434. He gave His only Son

  435. Can you imagine

  436. Giving somebody else

  437. The most important thing

  438. In your life?

  439. Maybe a special toy

  440. Or something that

  441. You feel is just for yourself

  442. Can you imagine

  443. Giving that away

  444. To somebody else?

  445. It would be very hard to do

  446. And yet God showed

  447. His love for us

  448. That He gave

  449. His only Son

  450. To this world

  451. What must we do

  452. Then in return?

  453. If you get something

  454. From someone

  455. Something nice

  456. From someone

  457. What do you do in return?

  458. You should give thanks

  459. To that person

  460. Well God wants something

  461. In return for us

  462. Because He gave His Son

  463. That we might believe

  464. That we might believe

  465. Believe that Jesus

  466. Is the Son of God

  467. And what do we get

  468. When we believe?

  469. We get this promise

  470. Of eternal life

  471. A wonderful promise

  472. That God gives

  473. To all of His people

  474. No matter what comes

  475. Our way in this world

  476. No matter what difficulties

  477. We might have

  478. As we journey on

  479. Through this world

  480. As we explore all the things

  481. Of this world

  482. We have the promise

  483. That when we believe

  484. In God's Son

  485. Jesus

  486. That He will give us

  487. Eternal life

  488. Isn't that a wonderful promise?

  489. Isn't that a wonderful love

  490. That God has shown

  491. To us?

  492. Now you might think

  493. To yourself

  494. Well why did God

  495. Have to send His Son?

  496. What was the problem?

  497. Was there anything wrong?

  498. Well yes

  499. Because the verses

  500. There go on to speak

  501. About darkness

  502. And light

  503. There were those

  504. Who were in darkness

  505. They didn't want to know God

  506. So God sent His Son

  507. As the light

  508. Of the world

  509. Is anyone scared

  510. Of the dark?

  511. Dark can be scary

  512. Can't it?

  513. When all the lights

  514. Go off

  515. When it's a really dark night

  516. It can be a scary time

  517. When there's nothing

  518. But darkness

  519. And it can also be

  520. Dangerous

  521. It's dangerous

  522. Because maybe you can't see

  523. Where you're going

  524. Now I don't know

  525. If you know

  526. What I used to do

  527. Before I became a minister

  528. But I used to be

  529. An engineer

  530. And working on ships

  531. At sea

  532. In a way

  533. Exploring

  534. Different parts of the world

  535. Seeing many different

  536. Parts of the world

  537. And I used to work

  538. In the engine room

  539. And the engine room

  540. Was huge

  541. A really huge place

  542. The engine and the ship

  543. I mean you think

  544. Of a car engine

  545. It's maybe about this big

  546. Well the engines

  547. And the ships

  548. I used to work on

  549. Were the size

  550. Probably of the church here

  551. Almost as wide

  552. As the middle section

  553. You're sitting in

  554. Probably as high

  555. As up to the ceiling

  556. Of the church

  557. They were huge

  558. And the engine room

  559. Was massive

  560. So there was

  561. Different floors

  562. To walk around

  563. The engine room

  564. And one night

  565. When I was in the engine room

  566. I was on duty

  567. It was late that night

  568. I was in the engine room

  569. By myself

  570. Just going around

  571. Checking all different things

  572. And the place

  573. Was full of light

  574. The place was bright

  575. And really noisy

  576. You had to wear ear defenders

  577. Because there was

  578. So much noise

  579. And then all of a sudden

  580. The place just went

  581. Into darkness

  582. A problem with the engine

  583. Made it stop

  584. And because the engine

  585. Stopped

  586. Everything else stopped

  587. There was no light

  588. There was no power

  589. The ship couldn't move

  590. There was nothing

  591. We could do

  592. I was lucky

  593. I had a torch

  594. Always carried a torch

  595. Because you never knew

  596. When this could happen

  597. So you could find

  598. Your way around

  599. But for a moment

  600. There's panic

  601. There's fear

  602. All of a sudden

  603. You go from a place

  604. That's full of light

  605. To complete darkness

  606. And it can be very scary

  607. Now we were lucky

  608. We weren't near land

  609. It could have been worse

  610. And we managed

  611. To get the power back

  612. But it just reminds us

  613. How often

  614. We can think

  615. Everything's okay

  616. Everything's fine

  617. But something comes along

  618. And that's what

  619. That scares us

  620. That leaves us frightened

  621. But that's what

  622. This verse reminds us

  623. That God has shown

  624. His love

  625. In that

  626. Even when there's times

  627. When there's darkness

  628. When we're scared

  629. By trusting in Jesus

  630. He has given us

  631. Light

  632. He has given us

  633. The way

  634. To go

  635. God has shown

  636. His love

  637. To us

  638. In this way

  639. So it's a wonderful thing

  640. That God has shown

  641. His love

  642. Now we're going to move

  643. And read

  644. The second part

  645. Of the Bible reading

  646. And that's in

  647. Ephesians

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  648. Chapter 3

  649. We've seen how

  650. God has shown

  651. His love

  652. We're now going to see

  653. The strength

  654. Of His love

  655. And again

  656. In these words

  657. That we read

  658. In Ephesians 3

  659. There's a sense of

  660. There's a prayer

  661. Here for us

  662. What Paul

  663. Is praying

  664. For his people

  665. He says there

  666. In verse 14

  667. For this reason

  668. I bow my knees

  669. Before the Father

  670. From whom

  671. Every family

  672. In heaven

  673. And on earth

  674. Is named

  675. That according

  676. To the riches

  677. Of His glory

  678. He may grant

  679. You to be

  680. Strengthened

  681. With power

  682. Through the spirit

  683. In your inner being

  684. So that Christ

  685. May dwell in your hearts

  686. Through faith

  687. That you

  688. Being rooted

  689. And grounded

  690. In love

  691. May have strength

  692. To comprehend

  693. With all the saints

  694. What is the breadth

  695. And length

  696. And height

  697. And depth

  698. And to know

  699. The love

  700. Of Christ

  701. That surpasses

  702. Knowledge

  703. That you may be

  704. Filled

  705. With all the fullness

  706. Of God

  707. Now to Him

  708. Who is able

  709. To do far more

  710. Abundantly

  711. Than all that we

  712. Ask or think

  713. According to the

  714. Power at work

  715. Within us

  716. To Him

  717. Be glory

  718. In the church

  719. And in Christ

  720. Jesus

  721. Throughout all

  722. Generations

  723. Forever

  724. And ever

  725. Amen

  726. Well we move

  727. From exploring

  728. The verse

  729. In John 3

  730. There

  731. John 3

    John 3:16

  732. Verse 16

  733. To exploring

  734. Another part

  735. Of God's word

  736. This passage

  737. In Ephesians

  738. Again it's full

  739. Of the love

  740. Of God

  741. And this prayer

  742. That Paul has

  743. For his people

  744. That they may

  745. Being rooted

  746. And grounded

  747. In love

  748. May have the strength

  749. To comprehend

  750. With all the saints

  751. That's everyone

  752. What is the breadth

  753. And length

  754. And height

  755. And depth

  756. Of his love

  757. What kind of things

  758. Do you measure

  759. There's different kinds

  760. Of things

  761. That we measure

  762. In our

  763. Day to day lives

  764. For example

  765. Many people

  766. In this week

  767. Were preparing

  768. Baking

  769. For having next door

  770. After the service

  771. I met one girl

  772. In the co-op

  773. Yesterday

  774. He was buying

  775. Ingredients

  776. For baking

  777. When they went

  778. Home

  779. And what do you

  780. Use when you're

  781. Baking a cake

  782. You want to

  783. Follow a recipe

  784. And you want to

  785. Make sure that

  786. Everything's measured

  787. Right and correct

  788. So you measure

  789. Everything out

  790. Whether it's the

  791. Flour

  792. The sugar

  793. The milk

  794. Whatever it is

  795. And you'll use

  796. Things to measure

  797. So you might

  798. Use a spoon

  799. Or a jug

  800. Or a cup

  801. And you'll put

  802. The right measurements

  803. Into the baking

  804. That you're going

  805. To make

  806. You measure

  807. Everything

  808. So that it's

  809. Correct

  810. But I wonder

  811. If we could

  812. Measure

  813. God's love

  814. Or how

  815. Would we

  816. Measure

  817. God's love

  818. In that way

  819. Well we think

  820. Of measuring

  821. For baking

  822. We think of

  823. Things that we

  824. Use

  825. For example

  826. A cup

  827. It might say

  828. Put two cups

  829. Of flour

  830. Into the cake

  831. So you measure

  832. Two cups

  833. Can we measure

  834. God's love

  835. In that way

  836. By using

  837. A cup

  838. Well we explore

  839. Another part

  840. Of the bible

  841. Psalm 23

  842. And this psalm

  843. Speaks about

  844. God's love

  845. For us

  846. When the lord

  847. Is our shepherd

  848. And he says

  849. I shall not want

  850. And in that psalm

  851. It says

  852. My cup

  853. Runs over

  854. My cup

  855. Is full

  856. Of God's love

  857. It flows

  858. Over

  859. You can't measure

  860. God's love

  861. With a cup

  862. If you think

  863. About building

  864. Something

  865. Maybe you're

  866. Building a shed

  867. Or a den

  868. Or something

  869. Like that

  870. And you're

  871. Working on it

  872. Whoever's

  873. Working with you

  874. They'll want

  875. To measure

  876. The bits of wood

  877. To cut them

  878. To the right size

  879. Of the windows

  880. So that they'll

  881. Fit in the space

  882. For the windows

  883. What do you use

  884. To measure that

  885. You'll use

  886. A measuring tape

  887. Won't you

  888. To measure

  889. The length

  890. Of all of these

  891. Things

  892. But can we

  893. Measure

  894. God's love

  895. Do you think

  896. We could get

  897. A measuring tape

  898. And start measuring

  899. God's love

  900. Well we explore

  901. The bible

  902. And it tells us

  903. We can't

  904. Because in another

  905. Psalm

  906. Psalm 108

  907. It says that

  908. God's love

  909. Is higher

  910. Than the heavens

  911. You couldn't

  912. Measure it

  913. Because it just

  914. Goes on

  915. There's no end

  916. To it

  917. So you couldn't

  918. Use a measuring

  919. Tape to measure

  920. God's love

  921. Does anybody

  922. Like sport

  923. Does anybody

  924. Like running

  925. Do you go

  926. To athletics

  927. Well if you're

  928. Running races

  929. They'll probably

  930. Use a stopwatch

  931. To time you

  932. To see how long

  933. You take

  934. To run the race

  935. Maybe you're

  936. Trying to keep

  937. A track

  938. Of your PB

  939. And beat it

  940. Week by week

  941. You use

  942. A stopwatch

  943. So do you think

  944. We could measure

  945. God's love

  946. By time

  947. To time

  948. God's love

  949. For us

  950. Use a stopwatch

  951. To time God's love

  952. Well again

  953. We look in the bible

  954. We explore the bible

  955. And it tells us

  956. That God's love

  957. Is from everlasting

  958. To everlasting

  959. It's no beginning

  960. It's no end

  961. So there's no end

  962. To it

  963. It's not

  964. He's going to love us

  965. For an hour

  966. Or a few days

  967. Or even a few years

  968. It's an everlasting love

  969. So we can't measure it

  970. With a stopwatch

  971. When we think of that

  972. Verse we had at the start

  973. God so loved the world

  974. That he gave his only son

  975. How do you measure

  976. A love like that

  977. You can't

  978. You can't even

  979. Put it into words

  980. So often

  981. It's a love

  982. That's beyond

  983. Understanding in many ways

  984. But what the bible

  985. Helps us to do

  986. As we explore the bible

  987. Is to know

  988. This love

  989. Even though

  990. We can't

  991. Measure it

  992. We can know it

  993. By believing

  994. In the lord

  995. Jesus Christ

  996. And that's

  997. Paul's prayer

  998. Here

  999. In Ephesians

  1000. That's what he's

  1001. Asking them

  1002. To pray for

  1003. That they may

  1004. Comprehend

  1005. That means

  1006. To know

  1007. And experience

  1008. With all of

  1009. God's people

  1010. The breadth

  1011. The length

  1012. The height

  1013. The depth

  1014. Of God's love

  1015. It's

  1016. Enormous

  1017. It's beyond

  1018. Measuring

  1019. It's but just

  1020. That we would

  1021. Know

  1022. This love

  1023. And we know

  1024. This love

  1025. Through

  1026. Knowing

  1027. Jesus

  1028. God's son

  1029. Because

  1030. Through faith

  1031. In him

  1032. This love

  1033. Is ours

  1034. It's for you

  1035. It's for you

  1036. It's for me

  1037. Through faith

  1038. We cannot

  1039. Measure it

  1040. Because it's

  1041. Beyond us

  1042. But we can

  1043. Know it

  1044. Because God

  1045. Has shown it

  1046. To us

  1047. It's a

  1048. Wonderful

  1049. Love

  1050. Well there's

  1051. One other

  1052. Aspect of

  1053. God's love

  1054. That we want

  1055. To think

  1056. About

  1057. And for that

  1058. We're going

  1059. To read

  1060. Another part

  1061. Of the

  1062. Bible

  1063. And it's

  1064. Some verses

  1065. From Romans

  1066. Chapter

  1067. Eight

  1068. Romans

  1069. Chapter

  1070. Eight

  1071. We're going

  1072. To read

  1073. From verse

  1074. Thirty

  1075. One

  1076. Down to

  1077. Verse

  1078. Thirty

  1079. Nine

  1080. Romans

  1081. Eight

  1082. Verse

  1083. Thirty

  1084. One

  1085. To

  1086. Verse

  1087. Thirty

  1088. Nine

  1089. What

  1090. Then

  1091. Shall

  1092. We

  1093. Say

  1094. To

  1095. These

  1096. Things

  1097. If

  1098. God

  1099. Is

  1100. For

  1101. Us

  1102. Who

  1103. Can

  1104. Be

  1105. Against

  1106. He

  1107. Who

  1108. Did

  1109. Not

  1110. Spare

  1111. His

  1112. Own

  1113. Son

  1114. But

  1115. Gave

  1116. Him

  1117. Up

  1118. For

  1119. Us

  1120. All

  1121. How

  1122. Will

  1123. He

  1124. Not

  1125. Also

  1126. With

  1127. Him

  1128. Graciously

  1129. Give

  1130. Us

  1131. All

  1132. Things

  1133. Who

  1134. Shall

  1135. Bring

  1136. Any

  1137. Charge

  1138. Against

  1139. God

  1140. Select

  1141. It

  1142. Is

  1143. God

  1144. Who

  1145. Justifies

  1146. Who

  1147. Is

  1148. To

  1149. Condemn

  1150. Christ

  1151. Jesus

  1152. Is

  1153. The

  1154. One

  1155. Who

  1156. Died

  1157. More

  1158. Than

  1159. That

  1160. Who

  1161. Was

  1162. Raised

  1163. Who

  1164. Is

  1165. At

  1166. The

  1167. Right

  1168. Hand

  1169. Of

  1170. God

  1171. Who

  1172. Indeed

  1173. Is

  1174. Interceding

  1175. For

  1176. Us

  1177. Who

  1178. Shall

  1179. Separate

  1180. Us

  1181. From

  1182. The

  1183. Love

  1184. Of

  1185. Christ

  1186. Shall

  1187. Tribulation

  1188. Or

  1189. Distress

  1190. Or

  1191. Persecution

  1192. Or

  1193. Famine

  1194. Or

  1195. Nakedness

  1196. Or

  1197. Danger

  1198. Or

  1199. Sword

  1200. As

  1201. It

  1202. Is

  1203. Written

  1204. For

  1205. Your

  1206. Sake

  1207. We

  1208. Are

  1209. Being

  1210. Killed

  1211. All

  1212. The

  1213. Day

  1214. Long

  1215. We

  1216. Are

  1217. regarded

  1218. As

  1219. She

  1220. To

  1221. Be

  1222. Slaughtered

  1223. No

  1224. In

  1225. In

  1226. All

  1227. In

  1228. All

  1229. In

  1230. All

  1231. These

  1232. Things

  1233. For

  1234. I

  1235. Am

  1236. Sure

  1237. That

  1238. Neither

  1239. Death

  1240. Nor

  1241. Life

  1242. Nor

  1243. Angels

  1244. Nor

  1245. Rulers

  1246. Nor

  1247. Things

  1248. Present

  1249. Nor

  1250. Things

  1251. To

  1252. Come

  1253. Nor

  1254. Powers

  1255. Nor

  1256. areas

  1257. Nor

  1258. Depth

  1259. In

  1260. moment

  1261. Are

  1262. Freffers

1263. Now there's some maybe big words in that passage that you can't understand.

1264. And if you've got any words and you're not sure what they are, there's a space there in one of the questions.

  1265. Words I didn't understand.

1266. So if there's anything you don't understand in these words, write them down and maybe ask someone after the service.

1267. But there are many words that we can understand in this passage.

1268. And especially we see how the love of God is shown to us here.

1269. It says there in verse 35, who shall separate us from the love of Christ?

1270. Now when you think of exploring, people going to many different parts of the world, exploring.

1271. Many of them had to face all kinds of difficulties.

1272. It might have been wild animals, for example, that were dangerous and they didn't know what they were.

1273. And they scared them or chased them at different times.

1274. It may have been jungles, really thick with trees and plants growing up and it was really hard to get through.

1275. You think of all kinds of places that people went.

1276. Some went to the North Pole and the South Pole.

1277. And they faced storms and snowstorms there.

  1278. All kinds of things.

1279. All kinds of dangers and challenges.

1280. And in these kinds of situations, maybe you can become separated from people who are with you.

1281. Maybe you lose people along the way because it's so dangerous.

1282. Well, this passage is reminding us that as we explore this world, as we go on and journey in this world,

1283. and as we think about what God has done for us, we know that there's maybe many dangers and troubles that will come our way.

1284. But it tells us that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

1285. So there's this wonderful reminder for us in these verses.

1286. And as you have been coming to explore it and also to Sunday school, since they started back in this last year,

1287. you will have been exploring God's word.

1288. And as we think about exploring, we often think about coming to a destination.

1289. And the destination we're coming to here as we conclude our service is to the place where God showed his love for us.

  1290. And it's a place called Calvary.

1291. It was just outside Jerusalem.

1292. And it was a place where God gave his son.

1293. We've just come back from holidays, the Easter holidays.

1294. You've just started back to school this week after these holidays.

1295. And Easter holidays is a special time when we remember what God has done for us.

1296. And so we are here today to think about, well, as we explore God's word, what do we want to see?

1297. And what do we want to know?

1298. We want to come and see the love of God in Christ Jesus.

1299. Because this is the fulfillment of it.

1300. That God says in verse 32, he did not spare his own son, but gave him up for us all.

  1301. It's very similar to John 3, 16.

  1302. He gave his son.

1303. He died for our sins.

1304. And because of that great love, we have this security.

1305. What does the word security mean to you?

  1306. You're secure.

1307. Maybe, like we think of explorers.

1308. Some people climbed great mountains.

1309. And they would have used a rope as they were climbing up mountains.

1310. Because that kept them secure, kept them safe.

1311. You needed to have trust in the rope that you were climbing up.

1312. You need sometimes to make things secure when gales are coming.

1313. Otherwise, they're going to blow away.

1314. So you tie things down.

  1315. You make them secure.

1316. So let me tell you a little story about the time when we were living in Dumfries.

  1317. Who's got a trampoline?

  1318. Anybody got a trampoline?

1319. Yeah, quite a few people.

  1320. You've got trampolines.

  1321. Or you've been on a trampoline.

1322. You bounce around on a trampoline.

1323. Well, we had a trampoline when we were in Dumfries.

1324. And we had it out in the back garden.

1325. We put it up in the summer.

1326. It's not as windy in Dumfries as it is up here.

1327. But sometimes the wind will be quite strong.

1328. And you always were prepared for that.

1329. So we used metal pins to tie the trampoline down.

1330. Now, we put it up in the summer.

1331. And the ground was very dry.

1332. And when we were hammering the pins in, you thought, oh, that's secure.

  1333. That's firmly fixed.

1334. And for months, children were playing on the trampoline.

  1335. And it was fine.

1336. One day, as we were coming into the winter months, though, we were away from the house.

1337. We were in the town.

1338. And somebody phoned us, a next-door neighbor.

1339. And they said, your trampoline's just taken off.

  1340. And we were, oh.

1341. So we had to rush back home.

1342. Now, luckily, the trampoline had just flipped over and stuck in a tree.

1343. So it didn't fly away away.

1344. We managed to get it back.

1345. We started thinking, how did that happen?

1346. I thought it was secure.

1347. We'd hammered the pins into the ground.

1348. But what we'd forgotten was, although the ground was hard and dry in the summer when we put it in,

1349. it rains a lot in Dumfries.

1350. And the ground had become very soft.

1351. So the pins were no longer secure.

1352. The trampoline was able to flip over in the wind.

1353. I'm keeping an eye on a trampoline in our next-door neighbor's garden,

1354. just in case that takes off any time soon as well.

1355. But they can be quite dangerous when they take off because they're big.

1356. And the wind will just blow them away.

1357. But we think of things that we need to make secure.

1358. Well, these verses remind us that with God's love, we have a great security.

1359. That we are fixed firmly in Jesus.

1360. So that no matter what troubles or persecutions or famines or dangers or rulers or powers or heights or depths,

1361. it doesn't matter what comes our way, nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

1362. And that's where we want to come to today.

1363. To realize that as we explore God's Word, as we hear all about God's Word,

1364. how He has shown His love to us, how it's a love that we cannot measure because it's so huge,

1365. it's a love that is secure, that nothing can take it from us as we put our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.

1366. Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

1367. So as we go on, and as you keep going to explore it, as we all keep coming to church and exploring and hearing of God's Word and God's love for us all,

1368. that we would come to believe in God's Son.

1369. That we might experience this love and know the great promise that He gives of eternal life.

1370. So may God bless His Word to us.

1371. So let's just again bow our heads in a word of prayer.

1372. Our Father in heaven, we thank you for your great love to us.

1373. How it's a love that you have not just told us about, but you have shown it to us by sending your own Son.

1374. And we pray, Lord, that today and in all the days ahead, we will know and experience your love more and more.

1375. That we will put our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.

1376. Your Word steadfast, immovable, secure.

1377. Because it is not about us, but about you.

1378. And you are the one who is able to keep all things secure and safe.

1379. And so, Lord, may you bless your Word to us all and bless us all together, families and friends and all our church community, near and far.

1380. May your blessing be on us.

1381. May we know your goodness and mercy with us day by day.

1382. And your blessing over all the work that we have thought of, the Sunday school and explorers, all the helpers and children.

1383. We ask that you will continue to watch over us all together as we commit ourselves into your hands.

1384. As we ask it in Jesus' name.

  1385. Amen.

  1386. Amen.

  1387. Amen.

  1388. Amen.

  1389. Amen.

1390. Well, we're going to conclude by singing to God's place in Psalm 36.

1391. Again, it's on the back of the order of service.

1392. Psalm 36, we're going to sing from verse 1 to verse 5.

1393. Again, this is a reminder to us of God's love.

1394. Your steadfast love is great, O Lord.

  1395. It reaches heaven high.

1396. Your faithfulness is wonderful, extending to the sky.

  1397. Then verse 7.

1398. How precious is your steadfast love.

1399. What confidence it brings, both high and low.

1400. Find shelter in the shadow of your wings.

1401. The tune is Huddersfield, and we'll stand to sing these three verses to God's praise.

  1402. Amen.

1403. Your steadfast love is great, O Lord.

  1404. It reaches heaven high.

  1405. Your faithfulness is wonderful.

1406. All extending to the sky.

1407. Your righteousness is very paid, like mountains high on steep.

1408. Your justice is like ocean depths.

1409. Both man and beast you give.

1410. Our preciousness is your steadfast love.

1411. What confidence it brings, both high and low.

1412. Find shelter in the shadow of your wings.

  1413. Amen.

  1414. Amen.

1415. Again, just a reminder that everybody's very welcome to come next door.

1416. The children are going to go through, after the final prayer, go through this door, through to the hall.

1417. And I'll go to the main door and meet folks there.

1418. So, very welcome to come next door, immediately after this says.

  1419. We'll close with a benediction.

  1420. Amen.

  1421. Amen.

  1422. Amen.

  1423. Amen.

  1424. Amen.

  1425. Amen.

  1426. Amen.

  1427. Amen.

  1428. Amen.

  1429. Amen.

  1430. Amen.

  1431. Amen.

  1432. Amen.

  1433. Amen.

  1434. miniscous net coast.

  1435. Amen.

  1436. Amen.

  1437. Amen.

  1438. Amen.

  1439. Amen.

  1440. Amen.

  1441. Amen.

  1442. Thank you.

  1443. Thank you.

  1444. Thank you.

  1445. Thank you.
