  1. So, we're going to begin by singing in Psalm 105, Psalm 105, verses 1 to 8. That's on page 374.

    Psalms 105:1–8

  2. Give thanks to God, call on His name, to men His deeds make known. Sing ye to Him, sing Psalms,

  3. proclaim His wondrous works each one. See that ye in His holy name to glory do accord,

  4. and let the heart of everyone rejoice that seeks the Lord. We're invited to seek the Lord,

  5. to do so with rejoicing hearts, hearts that rejoice in Him and in His salvation, and to come

  6. and seek in verse 4 the Lord Almighty and His strength to seek that as well, and to think

  7. on the works that He has done which breed admiration. So, verses 1 to 8, the tune is Denfield,

  8. Give thanks to God.

  9. Give thanks to God, call on His name, to men His deeds make known.

  10. Sing ye to Him, sing Psalms, proclaim His wondrous works each one.

  11. See that He in His holy name to glory do accord, and let the heart of everyone rejoice that seeks the Lord.

  12. The Lord Almighty and His strength with steadfast heart seek He.

  13. His blessed and His grace, His blessed and His gracious face, seek ye continually.

  14. Think on the works that He hath done which admiration bleed.

  15. Think on the works that He hath done which admiration bleed.

  16. His wonders and His grace, His wonders and the judgment's all, which from His path rose ye.

  17. O ye that God of Abram's grace, His servant will abound, and ye that Jacob's children are,

  18. the Lord Almighty and His glory are, whom He chose for His throne.

  19. Because He and He only is, the mighty God, the Lord.

  20. Because He and He only is, the mighty God, the Lord.

  21. And His most righteous judgments are, in all the earth, the Lord.

  22. His covenant He remembered hath, that it may ever stand.

  23. Two thousand generations, the word He did command.

  24. Amen.

  25. Well, let's once again call on the Lord in prayer.

  26. Let's join together in prayer.

  27. O Lord, our gracious God, it is so good for us to be taught by Your Word even as we sing.

  28. For You have given us in these words that we have sung so much to think upon, so much to admire, so much to take in and take stock of,

  29. concerning the Lord Himself and His works.

  30. We thank You, O Lord, at the beginning of our service this evening, that we have such great reminders extended to us in Your Word,

  31. and that every time we turn to Your Word, we are taught something of importance.

  32. And we pray that we may regard Your Word even this evening as that source of light and truth for us, that will bring to us these foundational truths that You have been pleased to reveal to us.

  33. We give thanks, Lord, for all that makes You worthy of our praise, for the beauty that pertains to You, for that perfection of beauty that belongs to You,

  34. when all Your attributes combine so completely and perfectly, so that they form that holy God whom we come to worship once again.

  35. And we give thanks that that continues, Lord, without any change, without any prospect of change.

  36. For not only is Your Word set before us the way in which these attributes belong to You, but also the way that You are unchangeably the same yesterday, today, and forever.

  37. And You are the God, therefore, whom we need as our foundation, one in whom we find our security, for it is in Your own perfection, in Your own unchangeable beauty and perfection, that we find the ground of our confidence.

  38. O Lord, help us to come before You tonight exercising that faith that believes that You are God and that You are the rewarder of those who diligently seek You.

  39. O Lord, we thank You that these words we have sung remind us of the importance of seeking You.

  40. O Lord, while we sometimes refer the seeking of our souls for God to that time in our experience, before we come to saving faith, we thank You that Your Word reminds us that the seeking of the Lord is an aspect of the faith of Your people,

  41. and that it is something that goes on through the whole course of life.

  42. O Lord, we seek You that we seek You, O Lord, this evening to come to bless us.

  43. O Lord, we seek You in Your power.

  44. O Lord, we seek You through Your grace to come to speak to us once again.

  45. O Lord, we seek You that we may know that we have met with You here, that we have had such a profitable time together as has come to know more of the wondrous truths of God.

  46. O Lord, we thank You, O Lord, that we have met with us.

  47. O Lord, we thank You, O Lord, for all that You continue to be for us.

  48. O Lord, however far back we look in history, You have been a faithful God to Your people.

  49. However far forward we may look in the promises of Your word, we thank You that You continue and will be a faithful God to Your people.

  50. O Lord, we pray, O Lord, for that sense of security for us even this evening that would come to You once again and deposit our lives into Your hand and come to trust in You and draw from You all that we require for our life ahead.

  51. O Lord, we thank You that You are the God who forgives sin.

  52. O Lord, we thank You that You are the God who forgives sin.

  53. And as we come with our confession of sin, as we always must, O Lord, we thank You we come to a God who has demonstrated His willingness to pardon,

  54. who has come to reveal Himself as the forgiver of sins in the history and experience of all who have come to know You as their God and Savior.

  55. O Lord, we confess tonight our sins.

  56. We confess that we find it at times so frustrating that we sin against You even in ways that we have sinned against You before.

  57. O Lord, we pray that as we contemplate these things, not only may we appreciate and give thanks for Your pardon,

  58. but also may we, O Lord, further our interest and further also our longing to be found at last in heaven where there is no sin,

  59. where we will be complete people, set in the image of God perfectly.

  60. O Lord God, help us as we turn our mind again this evening for a short time to the wonder, the glory, the prospect of resurrection life.

  61. O Lord, help us, we pray, to see ourselves in the light of it and to see the hope of Your people set in it, rooted in that resurrection of Jesus Christ,

  62. so that we may look forward to the resurrection of Your people.

  63. O Lord, we ask, O Lord, that You would give us, each of us here together tonight, that we may ourselves glory in Your resurrection

  64. and find ourselves amongst those whose prospect it is to share in resurrection life at last.

  65. May we be, O Lord, like the Apostle Paul long ago, whose desire it was to go on to know Christ and the power of His resurrection

  66. and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable unto His death, if by any means He might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.

  67. Bless us then, we pray each one.

  68. Bless all that took place already here today in our morning service, and our morning services indeed in Gallic as well.

  69. We thank You for the continuation of all our services, Lord, by Your grace.

  70. We pray especially for our young people who heard today of the love of God and the various aspects of that love as was brought before them.

  71. We thank You for them.

  72. We thank You for the way that they sat and listened, for the way in which they obviously showed an interest in filling their worksheets

  73. and coming to know more of that truth of the gospel.

  74. We, Lord, pray for them.

  75. We pray for them in this age in which they are confronted with so much that would seek to harm them physically, morally, spiritually.

  76. Protect them, Lord, we pray, from the clutches of the evil one, and bless all who seek to instruct them and teach them and guide them in the right way, in the way of Your truth.

  77. May it be so, Lord, within our families, our homes, our schools, and all the ways in which we find groups within the congregation and throughout the church,

  78. seeking to have the well-being of our young people catered for the church, seeking to have the well-being of our young people catered for.

  79. And, Lord, we pray that in our own case here in the congregation, these activities may flourish more and more.

  80. We thank You for the many young folks who come to the worship services as well.

  81. We pray that their participation in the worship services of Your church may prove to be of benefit to themselves, not only in the meantime, but as their life develops.

  82. And so we commend ourselves, Lord, to You now.

  83. And we pray as so much as taking place in our community in these days in memory of the Metagama and the Marloch and other ways by which people had to leave the island.

  84. We pray as we cast our minds back and as we are informed through the meetings that take place of the difficulties of those days.

  85. Lord, our God, make us thankful, we pray, for the relative plenty that You've given us to enjoy.

  86. But remind us too, O Lord, how dependent we are on Yourself.

  87. And as we think back on those who faced poverty and lack of work and lack of resources and lack of housing

  88. and had to leave this island and other places of our nation to go abroad.

  89. Lord, gracious Lord, make us thankful for the privileges we have.

  90. And bless our young people.

  91. And bless us, we pray, with employment and work for them as well.

  92. So that we may see our communities further built up.

  93. And that we may see further inroads into Your church as well by people who live around us and who presently don't come to the Gospel.

  94. Be merciful to them, we pray.

  95. Bless those who are in authority over us to that end as they wrestle with difficulties imposed by the conditions of our day, economic and otherwise.

  96. Give them wisdom, we pray.

  97. Grant Your blessing to those tonight we know who are struggling in these times financially.

  98. Lord, we ask that You would help us to take note of them, to seek to help them, to do whatever we can to alleviate them, to counsel them, to give them the help they need.

  99. We ask, O Lord, too, for those who tonight have other difficulties in life.

  100. We pray for those who are ill.

  101. We ask for those receiving treatment.

  102. Bless them and keep them through that anxious time.

  103. Bless those anticipating surgery.

  104. We pray that You would maintain them, Lord, to look to Yourself until that takes place.

  105. Remember, Lord, too, those who are seriously ill, any in hospice or hospital who are grievously low at this time.

  106. We pray again for Willie Graham, and we thank You for the measure of improvement in his condition.

  107. And we pray now that he is home in hospital here, that You would grant him, Lord, further progress in his health.

  108. We ask, too, that You would bless Mawrak and the family.

  109. Surround them with Your love, we pray, and continue to strengthen them all and grant to them as they would seek further improvement in Willie's condition,

  110. that they may look to Yourself and that they may come trustingly to draw their strength from You.

  111. Remember us now, then, we pray, and continue with us here with all that we seek in the pardon of our sin.

  112. For Jesus' sake, amen.

  113. We're going to sing again to God's praise this time.

  114. It's in Psalm 54, 54, and the Sing Psalms version on page 70.

  115. And singing verses 1 to 7, the whole of that psalm.

  116. The tune is Evan.

  117. Save me, O God, by Your great name, with power deliver me.

  118. Hear, O my God, the words I speak, and listen to my plea.

  119. For strangers are attacking me, the ruthless seek my life.

  120. For they have no regard for God, and always stir up strife.

  121. Words which remind us of our need to bring all our circumstances to God,

  122. and assures us that God gives an ear to our cry as we come believingly to Him to seek His help.

  123. So, Psalm 54, save me, O God, by Your great name.

  124. Save me, O God, by Your great name, with power deliver me.

  125. Hear, O my God, the words I speak, and listen to my plea.

  126. For strangers shall attack me, the ruthless seek my life.

  127. For they have no regard for God, and always stir up strife.

  128. Consider this God is my help, the Lord upholds my way.

  129. In faithfulness destroy my foes, their slander, glory pay.

  130. I'll bring a sacrifice to you, a free will ofening.

  131. Because your name, O Lord, is good.

  132. Your praises I will sing.

  133. For you, O Lord, have rescued me from my disgrace and woe.

  134. My eyes are blue in victory upon my cruel foe.

  135. O Lord, have rescued me from my life.

  136. Readings from God's Word this evening.

  137. There are two readings, firstly from the Gospel of John, chapter 5,

    John 5 chapter mention

  138. and then we're coming back to read from 1 Corinthians 15.

  139. First of all, John, chapter 5, and reading from verse 19 to 29.

    John 5 chapter mention

  140. So Jesus said to them,

  141. Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord,

  142. but only what he sees the Father doing.

  143. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.

  144. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing.

  145. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.

  146. For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,

  147. so also the Son gives life to whom he will.

  148. The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son,

  149. that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father.

  150. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.

  151. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life.

  152. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

  153. Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and is now here,

  154. when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.

  155. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.

  156. And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of man.

  157. Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out,

  158. those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

  159. And we turn also to 1 Corinthians chapter 15.

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  160. We read a short passage there from verse 35 to verse 45.

  161. So 1 Corinthians 15 at verse 35.

  162. But someone will ask, How are the dead raised?

  163. With what kind of body do they come?

  164. You foolish person!

  165. What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.

  166. And what you sow is not the body that is to be, but a bare seed, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain.

  167. But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body.

  168. For not all flesh is the same, but there is one kind of humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish.

  169. There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is of one kind, and the glory of the earthly is of another.

  170. There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars.

  171. For star differs from star in glory.

  172. So it is with the resurrection of the dead.

  173. What is sown is perishable.

  174. What is raised is imperishable.

  175. It is sown in dishonor.

  176. It is raised in glory.

  177. It is sown in weakness.

  178. It is raised in power.

  179. It is sown a natural body.

  180. It is raised a spiritual body.

  181. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.

  182. Thus it is written, the first man Adam became a living being.

  183. The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.

  184. May God bless to us these two portions of his word this evening.

  185. Before we turn back to 1 Corinthians 15, let's sing once again to God's praise in Psalm 71 on page 91.

  186. Psalm 71, the tune is Bunili.

  187. We're singing verses 14 to 21.

  188. But as for me, my hope is steadfast, and more and more your name I'll bless.

  189. I'll show your measureless salvation, and all day long your righteousness.

  190. I will proclaim your acts, O Lord God, and your righteousness, yes, yours alone.

  191. For since my youth, O God, you've taught me, and still your wonders I make known.

  192. Through to verse 21, from verse 14 to the tune Bunili to God's praise.

  193. God bless us, O Lord God.

  194. I will proclaim Your Son.

  195. But as for me, my hope is steadfast,

  196. I'll show you

  197. your salvation

  198. and all day long

  199. your righteousness.

  200. I will proclaim

  201. your acts, O Lord God,

  202. your righteousness,

  203. yes, yours alone.

  204. For since my youth,

  205. O God, you've taught me

  206. and still your wonders

  207. I may gloom.

  208. And now, my God,

  209. do not forsake me

  210. when old and great

  211. I have become

  212. till I declare

  213. your might and power

  214. to generations yet to come.

  215. Your justice reaches

  216. to the heavens.

  217. Who is like you,

  218. O God, in strength?

  219. Though you have shown me

  220. many troubles,

  221. you will restore

  222. my soul at land.

  223. From the deep places

  224. of air's darkness,

  225. you will bring up

  226. my life once more.

  227. You will increase

  228. your servant's honour.

  229. My comfort once

  230. again restore.

  231. Let's turn together

  232. this evening again

  233. to 1 Corinthians 15.

  234. Let's continue with

  235. our studies through

  236. this chapter.

  237. Tonight we're looking

  238. at this passage

  239. that we read,

  240. especially the early part

  241. of it,

  242. and particularly

  243. these words

  244. from verse 42

  245. to 44.

  246. So it is,

  247. with the resurrection

  248. of the dead,

  249. what is sown

  250. is perishable,

  251. what is raised

  252. is imperishable.

  253. It is sown

  254. in dishonour.

  255. It is raised

  256. in glory.

  257. It is sown

  258. in weakness.

  259. It is raised

  260. in power.

  261. It is sown

  262. a natural body.

  263. It is raised

  264. a spiritual body.

  265. What a difference

  266. it makes

  267. when you're looking

  268. forward to something

  269. exciting.

  270. What a difference

  271. it makes

  272. if you're,

  273. let's say,

  274. going to a place

  275. on holiday

  276. that you've never

  277. been to before.

  278. You've read

  279. up about it.

  280. You see all

  281. the different

  282. aspects of it

  283. that take your

  284. notice,

  285. whether it's

  286. into history

  287. you are,

  288. or whatever

  289. aspects of

  290. the world

  291. you're interested

  292. in.

  293. You obviously

  294. would have to

  295. try and investigate

  296. these.

  297. Places you go

  298. to usually

  299. are favourites

  300. for those sort

  301. of reasons

  302. that you want

  303. to see various

  304. aspects of things

  305. you're interested

  306. in.

  307. And as you're

  308. thinking forward

  309. with excitement

  310. to the eventuality,

  311. to the occurrence

  312. of happening,

  313. the event

  314. that you're

  315. looking forward

  316. to,

  317. it inevitably

  318. affects your

  319. thinking right

  320. now.

  321. Of course,

  322. you would never

  323. actually book

  324. for yourself

  325. a holiday

  326. in a place

  327. where you're

  328. going to see

  329. a lot of

  330. places,

  331. a lot of

  332. things that

  333. really take

  334. your interest

  335. without meantime

  336. making some

  337. preparation for it,

  338. without meantime

  339. studying up some

  340. more about these

  341. things so that

  342. when you get

  343. there,

  344. you're in a

  345. better position

  346. to actually

  347. do that.

  348. So,

  349. the prospect

  350. of what you're

  351. going to have

  352. in the future

  353. as you've

  354. made your

  355. plans and

  356. as you've

  357. made your

  358. bookings,

  359. that is

  360. obviously

  361. affecting the

  362. present way

  363. of thinking

  364. that you have

  365. in a positive

  366. way.

  367. Of course,

  368. it could easily

  369. be the other

  370. way about,

  371. that things

  372. in the future

  373. are things

  374. which give us

  375. concern,

  376. but let's

  377. keep it to the

  378. positive.

  379. That's what

  380. the passage

  381. is about,

  382. that positively

  383. affects the

  384. present.

  385. And of course,

  386. that's supremely

  387. the case with

  388. the Christian

  389. life,

  390. because all the

  391. way through

  392. this chapter

  393. we've been

  394. looking at

  395. Paul's treatment

  396. of the

  397. resurrection,

  398. the resurrection

  399. of God's

  400. people,

  401. as that's

  402. united to

  403. the resurrection

  404. of Jesus

  405. himself from

  406. the dead.

  407. Now,

  408. you could go

  409. to a place

  410. that you had

  411. really longed

  412. to see,

  413. you'd made

  414. all your

  415. preparations,

  416. and your

  417. thoughts of

  418. it as you

  419. made your

  420. preparations,

  421. were building

  422. up all the

  423. time,

  424. and then

  425. you actually

  426. get to it,

  427. and it's

  428. disappointing.

  429. It's not

  430. really what

  431. you expected.

  432. It's,

  433. you've got a

  434. feeling of

  435. just being

  436. let down,

  437. and of course

  438. maybe some

  439. of the glossy

  440. magazines or

  441. adverts are

  442. really overdone,

  443. and what you

  444. end up

  445. experiencing is

  446. just less

  447. than really you

  448. were hoping

  449. for or

  450. less than

  451. was presented

  452. to you.

  453. Well,

  454. of course,

  455. it's never

  456. going to be

  457. that way

  458. with your

  459. Christian hope.

  460. It's never

  461. going to be

  462. that way.

  463. In fact,

  464. it's going

  465. to be the

  466. opposite,

  467. because as

  468. we're looking

  469. forward to

  470. the resurrection,

  471. as God's

  472. people look

  473. forward to

  474. that,

  475. and everything

  476. that's on the

  477. other side

  478. of the

  479. resurrection,

  480. in the

  481. beauties and

  482. the glories

  483. and the

  484. bliss of

  485. heaven,

  486. the Bible

  487. tells you

  488. all the way

  489. through that

  490. it's going

  491. to be far

  492. better than

  493. you can

  494. even imagine

  495. here.

  496. And that's

  497. why we're

  498. saying the

  499. prospect of

  500. resurrection life,

  501. following the

  502. resurrection from

  503. the dead,

  504. is something

  505. that fills you

  506. here and ought

  507. to fill us,

  508. and in many

  509. ways I find

  510. myself saying,

  511. maybe you do

  512. too,

  513. it's surprising

  514. how little

  515. excitement I

  516. sometimes feel

  517. at the prospect

  518. of the

  519. resurrection that

  520. is unto life

  521. everlasting on

  522. the other side

  523. of death and

  524. resurrection from

  525. the dead.

  526. Now, Paul was

  527. excited about

  528. thinking of

  529. resurrection.

  530. You'll see that

  531. throughout his

  532. writings, that he

  533. wasn't just

  534. excited about the

  535. prospect of leaving

  536. this world and

  537. going to be with

  538. Christ, which he

  539. says is far

  540. better, as he

  541. wrote to the

  542. Philippians, but

  543. it's particularly

  544. resurrection that

  545. he's got his

  546. mind set upon.

  547. That's the

  548. terminus.

  549. That's the

  550. conclusion of

  551. the whole

  552. thing.

  553. That's the

  554. thing that God

  555. himself has in

  556. store.

  557. That's what the

  558. coming of Christ

  559. was all about.

  560. That's what his

  561. death and his

  562. resurrection and

  563. his exaltation were

  564. designed to

  565. actually bring about

  566. and lead to.

  567. And I hope we've

  568. got something of,

  569. even though some of

  570. these passages are

  571. difficult, in 1

  572. Corinthians 15.

  573. I hope at least one

  574. of the outcomes is

  575. that it's brought

  576. us in our mind to

  577. think of the

  578. wonders that await

  579. the Lord's people on

  580. the other side of

  581. being raised from the

  582. dead, and of how

  583. there is no prospect

  584. of the kind of

  585. limitations and

  586. experiences of pain

  587. and loss that we

  588. experience in this

  589. life.

  590. As we turn to

  591. this passage, we've

  592. already seen the

  593. hopelessness of the

  594. person who discounts

  595. resurrection, who

  596. denies such a thing

  597. as the resurrection.

  598. Where is our hope if

  599. we don't believe in the

  600. resurrection of Jesus

  601. and if we don't

  602. believe in the

  603. resurrection of God's

  604. people united to

  605. Jesus?

  606. There is no hope.

  607. There is no ground

  608. of hope.

  609. hope.

  610. It's just gloom, the

  611. darkness of the

  612. grave and nothing

  613. beyond.

  614. And this life in

  615. this world, as we've

  616. seen already in this

  617. chapter in 1

  618. Corinthians 15, if in

  619. this life only we

  620. have hope in Christ,

  621. we are of all people

  622. most to be pitied.

  623. Because if this world

  624. and the borders of

  625. this world is really

  626. all there is to it,

  627. what is the purpose

  628. of human life?

  629. Yes, we can say we

  630. can do so much to

  631. help each other, and

  632. that's good.

  633. We can do so much to

  634. help others and make

  635. the world a better

  636. place.

  637. What then?

  638. What is the outcome

  639. of reaching the end

  640. stage of your life in

  641. this world if there's

  642. nothing beyond?

  643. Well, the Bible, of

  644. course, discounts that

  645. idea and brings us

  646. this wonderful positive

  647. emphasis that for all

  648. who trust in Christ,

  649. this world is not just

  650. that it's not the end

  651. of things, but it's the

  652. end of the limitations

  653. of things that we

  654. experience in this life.

  655. So, tonight we're

  656. looking at the

  657. transformation involved

  658. in resurrection from the

  659. dead for the Lord's

  660. people.

  661. And what a

  662. transformation it is.

  663. Even the Apostle Paul

  664. is struggling to find

  665. words adequate to

  666. describe what the

  667. resurrection body, and

  668. that's what he's dealing

  669. with mainly, the

  670. resurrection body, what

  671. our body will be like in

  672. the resurrection.

  673. We know what it's like

  674. here.

  675. We know what we feel in

  676. terms of bodily pains and

  677. bodily limitations.

  678. We know what it's like

  679. that aspects of our

  680. physical makeup actually

  681. themselves are so united

  682. to our sinfulness and to

  683. our being sinful people and

  684. practicing sin.

  685. And the Apostle is

  686. excited at the prospect

  687. that the body that will

  688. be raised from the dead

  689. is done with sin, and

  690. it's done with these

  691. limitations, and it's

  692. done with the kind of

  693. things you have here in

  694. humiliation and in these

  695. frustrations of not being

  696. able to glorify God a

  697. hundred percent as you'd

  698. like to.

  699. Let's look at what he's

  700. saying.

  701. First of all, I want to

  702. take what really is a key

  703. phrase from the passage,

  704. and that's what you find

  705. in verses 38 to 41.

  706. And the key phrase

  707. especially is where he

  708. talks here about God

  709. gives it a body in verse

  710. 38, but God gives it a

  711. body as he has chosen.

  712. These are really

  713. significant words at the

  714. heart of the passage.

  715. Indeed, some are of the

  716. view that that's really the

  717. heart of the chapter.

  718. God gives it a body.

  719. It's not just that there's

  720. such a thing as a

  721. resurrection and a body

  722. that comes out of the

  723. grave as a resurrected

  724. body, as the risen body

  725. that's united then to the

  726. soul.

  727. In the case of the saved,

  728. Paul is saying, God gives

  729. it a body.

  730. It is he who is in charge of

  731. what comes up from the

  732. dead.

  733. And it's interesting how he

  734. illustrates this because,

  735. well, he begins by actually

  736. picking up a couple of

  737. skeptical objections, it

  738. seems, if you might call it

  739. that, in verses 35 and 36.

  740. But someone will ask, how

  741. are the dead raised?

  742. With what kind of body do

  743. they come?

  744. And you can tell that Paul is

  745. somewhat annoyed with that

  746. because he answers that,

  747. first of all, by saying, you

  748. foolish person.

  749. And he goes on to explain why

  750. he is so vehement in such

  751. language, you foolish

  752. person.

  753. It's as if he's dealt with

  754. all that the chapter has

  755. contained so far.

  756. There were some in Corinth

  757. who didn't believe in the

  758. resurrection of the dead.

  759. And we've seen how Paul has

  760. dealt with that.

  761. But there may well have been

  762. some people who still, as

  763. far as Paul was concerned,

  764. were still skeptical, still

  765. really not taking this in,

  766. that there is such a thing

  767. awaiting God's people as

  768. the resurrection from the

  769. dead.

  770. So he's saying, someone will

  771. ask, well, how are the dead

  772. raised then?

  773. As if he's saying, well, if

  774. you believe in the

  775. resurrection, tell me how

  776. they are raised.

  777. Or what kind of body will

  778. they have when they are

  779. raised?

  780. And Paul's reaction is,

  781. you foolish person.

  782. That's very strong language

  783. because what Paul is

  784. concerned for is that they

  785. haven't really exercised their

  786. minds to follow what he's

  787. saying even so far.

  788. So he's now adding to it.

  789. And he uses an analogy.

  790. He uses the illustration of

  791. what happens to a seed when

  792. you place it in the ground

  793. and the contrast between the

  794. seed that you place in the

  795. ground, whatever it might be,

  796. and the plant that grows from

  797. that when it reaches its

  798. fullness.

  799. That's the contrast that he's

  800. drawing and he's using that to

  801. illustrate why these people that

  802. are raising these questions

  803. really are foolish.

  804. They're not really thinking

  805. things through properly.

  806. And of course, one of the

  807. great important things for you

  808. as a Christian, for us as

  809. Christians, is to use your

  810. mind.

  811. Use the mind, as Paul says so

  812. often, to consider God's truth.

  813. Apply your mind to it.

  814. And this is what he's saying.

  815. You foolish person, what you sow

  816. does not come to life unless it

  817. dies.

  818. And what you sow is not the body

  819. that is to be, but a bare seed,

  820. perhaps of wheat or of some other

  821. grain.

  822. Now, you see what he's saying?

  823. That you actually place the seed in

  824. the ground, wheat, whatever it

  825. might be.

  826. And then what comes up from it, in a

  827. sense, of course it's still attached

  828. to the seed, but it's not exactly the

  829. seed that you planted in the ground,

  830. although it is in essence the same

  831. plant.

  832. And what he's really concerned for is

  833. that the Corinthians will understand

  834. that there's a process that needs to

  835. be gone through.

  836. Because the final plant requires the

  837. death of the seed before it actually

  838. comes to its full fruition.

  839. The seed dies.

  840. You look at a potato.

  841. Some of you might have planted

  842. potatoes already.

  843. If you plant potatoes, and you know

  844. very well when you come to find the

  845. potato plant growing, yes, it produces

  846. all these other potatoes underneath,

  847. you hope.

  848. The plant grows.

  849. The leaves are there.

  850. Everything comes out of the ground.

  851. You go to the original potato.

  852. You can't use it again.

  853. It's rotten.

  854. It's disintegrated.

  855. It's given its life to the plant that

  856. grew from it.

  857. And it's that principle that Paul is

  858. applying here when he says,

  859. that which dies is placed in the

  860. ground, and out of it grows the plant

  861. from that seed.

  862. And the process is death first, then

  863. comes life from that.

  864. Now, Jesus used this very interestingly,

  865. used the same principle, same

  866. illustration in John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  867. If you turn to that for a moment

  868. with me, please, there's a few

  869. verses there we can see are important.

  870. John 12, verse 24.

    John 12:24

  871. This is Jesus applying this principle

  872. to himself.

  873. I'm not going to spend much time on this,

  874. but just to illustrate how Jesus himself

  875. used this same principle as well.

  876. Here are, from verse 20, people who are

  877. coming up and seeking to see Jesus.

  878. Philip and Andrew are involved.

  879. And this is Jesus answering.

  880. He says,

  881. The hour has come for the Son of Man,

  882. that's himself, to be glorified.

  883. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  884. unless a grain of wheat falls into the

  885. earth and dies, it remains alone.

  886. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.

  887. He's talking there of himself, firstly.

  888. And as far as I'm aware,

  889. it's true that in the tombs of Egypt,

  890. grains were found that were buried

  891. with some of the kings or important people

  892. that were buried in these large tombs

  893. or found in clay vessels,

  894. still intact,

  895. but still just as seed

  896. as they had been placed

  897. in the earthenware jar or whatever.

  898. But I believe it's true that when

  899. some of them were placed

  900. in the earth,

  901. they actually grew.

  902. They still had life in them.

  903. The point is this.

  904. Unless the seed dies,

  905. it remains, Jesus is saying,

  906. on its own.

  907. And he is saying that

  908. about his own death.

  909. Unless he dies,

  910. there is no fruit

  911. from him,

  912. from his life,

  913. without him first dying

  914. and then rising from the dead.

  915. But he doesn't leave it at that.

  916. He says then

  917. that whoever loves his life

  918. loses it,

  919. and whoever hates his life

  920. in this world

  921. will keep it for eternal life.

  922. If anyone serves me,

  923. he must follow me,

  924. and where I am,

  925. there will my servant be also.

  926. If anyone serves me,

  927. the Father will honor him.

  928. Now, see what he's saying there.

  929. He's saying about himself,

  930. it must be the case

  931. that there will be death

  932. in my experience,

  933. in my case,

  934. for there to be life

  935. as the outcome.

  936. The Son of Man

  937. must die

  938. just as the seed

  939. goes into the ground.

  940. But he applies that then

  941. to our lives

  942. as human beings.

  943. There must be

  944. a dying

  945. or a death

  946. in our life.

  947. And this is not just

  948. in terms of

  949. when our body

  950. is laid into the tomb.

  951. That's not what he's

  952. dealing with there.

  953. It's a matter of you

  954. dying to yourself,

  955. dying to your self-righteousness,

  956. dying to your own

  957. preferences,

  958. as it were,

  959. dying to everything

  960. that's a contrast to

  961. or an opposition

  962. to placing your life

  963. in the hands of God.

  964. Whoever

  965. keeps his life

  966. shall lose it.

  967. You hang on to it.

  968. It's like the seed

  969. that's never been planted.

  970. It doesn't grow.

  971. It doesn't produce the fruit.

  972. But if it dies,

  973. if you die to yourself,

  974. remember that's what

  975. you're doing,

  976. when you give your life

  977. over to Christ,

  978. when you come to trust

  979. in Him by God's grace,

  980. what you're doing

  981. is really handing over

  982. your life

  983. for Him to look after it,

  984. for Him to keep it

  985. in security,

  986. for Him to bring

  987. ultimately

  988. that fruit of righteousness

  989. into your life.

  990. There has to be

  991. a dying to self,

  992. and he said that elsewhere,

  993. didn't he,

  994. in the other gospel,

  995. speaking about

  996. what it is

  997. to be his disciple.

  998. If any man would follow me,

  999. let him take up his cross,

  1000. deny himself,

  1001. and follow me.

  1002. He always mentioned this,

  1003. deny himself,

  1004. die to yourself,

1005. and die to the life

  1006. of sin's dominance.

  1007. So important,

  1008. isn't it?

  1009. We can't expect

  1010. to live spiritually

  1011. without dying to self.

  1012. I said I wasn't going to spend

1013. too much time on it,

1014. but it is an important point.

1015. I want you to take that

  1016. with you

  1017. and just ponder it.

1018. Have you died to self?

1019. Have you given your life

  1020. over to Christ?

  1021. You see,

  1022. your life is either

1023. in the hands of Christ

1024. or it's in your own hands.

  1025. Your life is either

1026. being looked after by Him

  1027. or you're trying

  1028. to manage it yourself.

1029. And when you come to die,

1030. you're either going to die

1031. in the hands of Christ

1032. or you're going to die,

  1033. sadly,

1034. trying still to look after it

  1035. without any prospect

  1036. of resurrection unto life.

  1037. And so,

  1038. coming back to

  1039. 1 Corinthians 15,

1040. here is what he's saying

  1041. regarding the same principle.

  1042. What you sow

1043. does not come to life

  1044. unless it dies.

  1045. And what you sow

  1046. is not the body

  1047. that is to be,

1048. but God gives it a body

  1049. as He has chosen.

  1050. Now,

  1051. He extends that

  1052. to really pretty much

  1053. to the whole creation.

  1054. He talks about animals,

  1055. birds,

  1056. fish,

  1057. and what He's really

  1058. demonstrating is that

  1059. God gives them

  1060. their own body.

  1061. God gives them,

  1062. each of them,

  1063. the body

  1064. that He has designed

  1065. for them.

  1066. And He goes through

  1067. to say,

  1068. in the creation,

  1069. there are heavenly bodies

1070. and there are earthly bodies.

  1071. There's the sun

  1072. and the moon

  1073. and the stars.

  1074. They all have

  1075. their own different bodies,

  1076. their own shape,

  1077. their own properties,

  1078. and their own glory.

  1079. And so it is,

  1080. He says,

  1081. with the resurrection

  1082. of the dead.

  1083. He's answering these objections,

  1084. these questions.

1085. But the point is this,

  1086. if God,

  1087. as He is,

1088. is giving their own body

  1089. to these objects,

  1090. to these planets,

  1091. to these stars,

  1092. to these creatures

  1093. in His creation,

1094. if God is giving them

1095. a body as He has designed,

  1096. He is the one

1097. who is going to give

  1098. His people the body

  1099. in the resurrection.

  1100. If God has done

  1101. what He's done already,

  1102. Paul is really saying,

1103. you can put it into words

  1104. like this or similar,

1105. if you think of God

  1106. having done this already,

  1107. why should you doubt

  1108. that God will give

  1109. a body

  1110. to those

  1111. who died

  1112. and His bodies

  1113. initially were laid

  1114. into the dust

  1115. and death

1116. because He will give it

  1117. a body

  1118. in the resurrection.

  1119. And that brings us

  1120. to the second part.

  1121. What kind

  1122. of body

  1123. will they be?

  1124. Well,

  1125. it's from

  1126. the natural,

  1127. He says,

  1128. to the spiritual.

  1129. Let's read from

  1130. verse 42.

  1131. So it is

  1132. with the resurrection

  1133. of the dead.

  1134. What is sown

  1135. is perishable.

  1136. What is raised

  1137. is imperishable.

  1138. It is sown

  1139. in dishonor.

  1140. It is raised

  1141. in glory.

  1142. It is sown

  1143. in weakness.

  1144. It is raised

  1145. in power.

  1146. It is sown

  1147. a natural body.

  1148. It is raised

  1149. a spiritual body.

  1150. So,

  1151. in a sense,

  1152. you have the same

  1153. as you have

  1154. with the seed.

  1155. There's discontinuity.

  1156. It's not the seed

  1157. that rises.

  1158. And yet,

  1159. there's continuity

  1160. because what rises

  1161. is from the seed

  1162. that was planted.

1163. Let me read to you

  1164. what Confession of Faith,

  1165. the Westminster

  1166. Confession of Faith,

1167. and how it puts it

  1168. in chapter 32,

  1169. paragraph 2.

  1170. This is dealing

  1171. with the resurrection.

  1172. At the last day,

1173. such as are found alive

  1174. shall not die,

  1175. but be changed.

  1176. He's talking here

  1177. about Christians,

  1178. the people of God.

1179. Such as are found alive

  1180. shall not die,

  1181. but be changed.

  1182. And all the dead

  1183. shall be raised up

  1184. with the self-same bodies.

  1185. Now,

  1186. isn't that interesting?

  1187. With the self-same bodies,

1188. the bodies that were laid

  1189. into the grave,

  1190. into the tomb.

  1191. In other words,

1192. it will be your body

  1193. and my body

  1194. that comes out

  1195. in the resurrection.

  1196. It won't be a body

  1197. different in essence

  1198. to the body

  1199. that you had.

  1200. Let's continue

  1201. with the confession.

  1202. With the self-same bodies

  1203. and none other,

  1204. although with different qualities.

  1205. Although with different qualities.

1206. And that's what he says here,

  1207. Paul is saying,

  1208. in verses 42 to 44.

  1209. The same body

1210. as was placed in the grave,

1211. it is sown a natural body.

1212. It is raised a spiritual body.

1213. The same body in that sense.

  1214. But what is sown

  1215. is perishable.

  1216. What is raised

  1217. is imperishable.

  1218. Your body,

  1219. my body,

  1220. that's what comes forth

  1221. from the grave,

  1222. but it comes forth

  1223. imperishable

  1224. and in power

  1225. and honor

  1226. and glory.

  1227. And if we look

  1228. at these briefly,

  1229. we can follow through

1230. in what he's saying there.

  1231. So they're different.

1232. Not the same in substance,

  1233. but they're different.

  1234. It's very difficult

  1235. for us to find

  1236. adequate words.

  1237. I mean,

  1238. I can't possibly

  1239. find adequate words.

  1240. The apostle was struggling,

  1241. so who am I

1242. to try and put them

  1243. into English?

1244. But this is what he's saying.

  1245. Let me see

1246. if I can put it this way.

  1247. He deals with

  1248. four contrasts

  1249. to set out

  1250. this indescribably

  1251. great change

  1252. that comes about,

  1253. a change

  1254. from what was

  1255. put in the ground

  1256. to what you see

  1257. coming forth.

  1258. Same body

  1259. in substance,

  1260. but very different

  1261. in qualities.

  1262. That's how the

  1263. confession puts it.

1264. And he gives it that here.

  1265. He's putting that here.

  1266. Paul is saying,

  1267. it is,

  1268. what is sown

  1269. is perishable,

  1270. what is raised

  1271. is imperishable.

  1272. Perishable,

  1273. of course,

  1274. means subject

  1275. to decay,

  1276. subject to

  1277. dissolution.

  1278. Our bodies return

  1279. to the dust.

  1280. We have to

  1281. contemplate that.

  1282. That's something

  1283. that has come about

  1284. by,

  1285. in God's response,

  1286. if you like,

  1287. to our sin

  1288. against him.

1289. As he said to Adam,

  1290. from dust

  1291. you were made,

  1292. and to dust

  1293. you shall return.

  1294. It was part of

  1295. what God

  1296. brought upon

  1297. human life

  1298. as his response

  1299. to our sin

  1300. against him.

  1301. Never mind,

1302. this is what he's saying.

  1303. It is sown,

  1304. what is sown

  1305. is perishable,

  1306. what is raised

  1307. is imperishable.

  1308. Now again,

1309. I'm not going to spend

1310. time with each of those.

  1311. Let's take them together.

  1312. Perishable,

  1313. subject to decay.

  1314. That's what

  1315. your body is

  1316. when it goes back.

  1317. When it's buried

  1318. in the grave,

  1319. it's subject to decay.

  1320. It's a very solemn point.

  1321. Something that we find

  1322. difficult to comprehend,

  1323. even to accept,

  1324. that that's what's

1325. going to happen to us.

1326. But that's what it is.

  1327. But it's raised

  1328. imperishable.

  1329. What is raised

  1330. is imperishable.

  1331. And it's not just

  1332. the opposite

  1333. of what is perishable,

  1334. it's the actual

  1335. reverse of what's

  1336. perishable.

  1337. because what's perishable

  1338. was always leading

  1339. towards that end.

  1340. All the way through

  1341. from the time

  1342. you were born,

  1343. you were going through

  1344. the process of dying.

  1345. But what is raised

  1346. is imperishable.

1347. There is no such process

  1348. with regard to

  1349. the resurrection body.

  1350. It remains

  1351. imperishable.

  1352. Never again

  1353. will there be something

  1354. to enter into it

1355. as a process of decay,

  1356. a process of decomposition.

  1357. It will in fact,

  1358. in other words,

  1359. have fullness

  1360. of life

  1361. associated with it.

1362. We're going to be raised

1363. to a fullness of life.

  1364. A life,

  1365. we may say,

1366. with which your present body

  1367. just couldn't cope

  1368. because the body

  1369. presently

1370. is still affected by sin,

  1371. even the body

  1372. of the saved people

  1373. of God.

  1374. And when you see

  1375. in the Bible

  1376. briefly,

  1377. dimly,

  1378. how coming into

  1379. the presence of God

  1380. or into the glory

  1381. of Christ,

  1382. such as Paul saw

1383. on the way to Damascus,

  1384. his body couldn't cope

  1385. with it.

  1386. He immediately fell

  1387. to the ground.

  1388. He was struck

  1389. with blindness.

1390. And what Paul is saying

  1391. is,

  1392. God will give us

  1393. a body,

  1394. all God's people

1395. will be given a body

  1396. that we'll be able

  1397. to cope with,

  1398. we'll be able

  1399. to manage,

  1400. we'll be able

  1401. to actually

  1402. have this

  1403. everlasting life

  1404. without it having

  1405. a destructive effect

  1406. on you.

  1407. It's the reversal

  1408. of death.

  1409. It's fullness

  1410. of life.

  1411. There's these beautiful

  1412. words in the psalm,

  1413. isn't there,

  1414. in Psalm 16,

  1415. words that were

  1416. applied to Jesus

  1417. himself,

  1418. of course,

  1419. that he would not

  1420. see corruption.

  1421. In your presence

  1422. there is

  1423. fullness

  1424. of joy.

  1425. Fullness

  1426. of joy.

  1427. Raised up to

  1428. fullness

  1429. of life.

  1430. So it's

  1431. imperishable.

  1432. It is sown

  1433. in dishonor,

  1434. it is raised

  1435. in glory.

  1436. Because

  1437. what is

  1438. presently

  1439. the case

  1440. even with

  1441. our Christian

  1442. life,

  1443. with our

  1444. Christian

  1445. bodies,

  1446. they're still

  1447. attached to sin

  1448. and our sinning,

  1449. aren't they?

  1450. When you put

  1451. our bodies

  1452. in a coffin

  1453. and they're

  1454. then laid

  1455. into the

  1456. dust,

  1457. you still

  1458. associate that

  1459. body with

  1460. dishonor,

  1461. in the sense

  1462. that it's

  1463. humiliation

  1464. for us even

  1465. to come

  1466. to be

  1467. returning

  1468. to dust.

  1469. It's

  1470. something that

  1471. really,

  1472. again,

  1473. brings to us

  1474. the fact,

  1475. the reality

  1476. of sin,

  1477. the reality

  1478. of death

  1479. as the

  1480. wages of

  1481. sin.

  1482. It is

  1483. sown

  1484. in dishonor.

  1485. Sinful

  1486. desires

  1487. right up to

  1488. the very

  1489. moment,

  1490. perhaps,

  1491. when we die,

  1492. are still

  1493. attached to

  1494. this bodily

  1495. existence.

  1496. But it

  1497. is raised

  1498. in glory.

  1499. It is

  1500. raised

  1501. in glory.

  1502. There will

  1503. be no

  1504. sinful

  1505. thoughts,

  1506. no incapacity

  1507. as far as

  1508. glorifying God

  1509. is concerned.

  1510. Do you

  1511. not long

  1512. for that?

  1513. Do you

  1514. not long

  1515. to have

  1516. a body

  1517. where your

  1518. eyes,

  1519. where what

  1520. you see,

  1521. what you

  1522. hear,

  1523. where your

  1524. mouth,

  1525. where your

  1526. tongue,

  1527. where your

  1528. speech is

  1529. not so

  1530. attached to

  1531. sin and

  1532. dishonoring God

  1533. as it

  1534. presently is?

  1535. Do you

  1536. not long

  1537. to have

  1538. a body

  1539. that's no

  1540. longer a

  1541. body of

  1542. humiliation

  1543. or a

  1544. body that's

  1545. got dishonorableness

  1546. attached to

  1547. it due to

  1548. sin?

  1549. Do you

  1550. not long

  1551. to have

  1552. that body

  1553. where all

  1554. your physical

  1555. dimensions and

  1556. your physical

  1557. abilities and

  1558. capabilities are

  1559. all perfectly

  1560. aligned with

  1561. the glory

  1562. of God,

  1563. with the

  1564. praise of

  1565. God?

  1566. That's what

  1567. Paul is

  1568. saying.

  1569. It is

  1570. sown in

  1571. dishonor,

  1572. it is

  1573. raised in

  1574. glory.

  1575. It is

  1576. raised in

  1577. such a

  1578. way that

  1579. no longer

  1580. is there

  1581. any further

  1582. attachment in

  1583. any way to

  1584. sin.

  1585. And it is

  1586. sown in

  1587. weakness,

  1588. it is

  1589. raised in

  1590. power.

  1591. The

  1592. incapacity

  1593. and lack

  1594. of capability

  1595. that we find

  1596. now is

  1597. gone.

  1598. You know,

  1599. it is

  1600. exciting when

  1601. you think

  1602. of the

  1603. body with

  1604. which Jesus

  1605. was raised

  1606. from the

  1607. dead,

  1608. or the

  1609. body of

  1610. Jesus raised

  1611. from the

  1612. dead.

  1613. That is

  1614. the pattern

  1615. for the

  1616. body of

  1617. Christians raised

  1618. from the

  1619. dead.

  1620. And you

  1621. can see in

  1622. the Gospels

  1623. what that

  1624. was capable

  1625. of.

  1626. Jesus

  1627. actually

  1628. traveled

  1629. through

  1630. solid

  1631. walls.

  1632. He

  1633. manifested

  1634. himself

  1635. in the

  1636. middle

  1637. of

  1638. his

  1639. group

  1640. of

  1641. disciples

  1642. and the

  1643. doors

  1644. were

  1645. locked.

  1646. Why does

  1647. it say

  1648. the doors

  1649. were

  1650. locked?

  1651. Well,

  1652. so that we

  1653. can actually

  1654. conclude that

  1655. Jesus'

  1656. entrance must

  1657. have been by

  1658. some other

  1659. way.

  1660. And it

  1661. wasn't just

  1662. a spiritual

  1663. entrance as

  1664. if they were

  1665. seeing a

  1666. ghost.

  1667. He was

  1668. there bodily.

  1669. He invited

  1670. people to

  1671. touch Him.

  1672. How did

  1673. He come

  1674. bodily into

  1675. the presence

  1676. of that

  1677. gathered group

  1678. of disciples?

  1679. Well,

  1680. we can't

  1681. say absolutely

  1682. for sure

  1683. the spiritual

  1684. mechanics of

  1685. it, if you

  1686. like, but

  1687. His body

  1688. had properties

  1689. different to

  1690. or above

  1691. the properties

  1692. He had before

  1693. His death.

  1694. He came in

  1695. His resurrected

  1696. body.

  1697. That's the

  1698. pattern for

  1699. our own.

  1700. It's sown

  1701. in weakness.

  1702. It's raised

  1703. in power.

  1704. Can you

  1705. put a

  1706. measure

  1707. on what

  1708. our resurrected

  1709. bodies will

  1710. be capable

  1711. of?

  1712. I can't.

  1713. But it's

  1714. exciting to

  1715. think of

  1716. how our

  1717. physical,

  1718. the physical

  1719. aspect of

  1720. our bodies,

  1721. how the

  1722. physical aspect

  1723. of our being

  1724. will no longer

  1725. be as limited

  1726. as it is.

  1727. It will not

  1728. be divine.

  1729. It will not

  1730. be all

  1731. powerful,

  1732. but it will

  1733. be capable

  1734. of so,

  1735. so much

  1736. more,

  1737. perhaps even

  1738. in terms of

  1739. travel,

  1740. who knows?

  1741. But it's

  1742. certainly going

  1743. to be way

  1744. above our

  1745. capacity in

  1746. this life,

  1747. in our bodily

  1748. existence now.

  1749. It is sown

  1750. in weakness.

  1751. it is raised

  1752. in power.

  1753. You know,

  1754. when you

  1755. place a

  1756. coffin into

  1757. the grave.

  1758. Let me

  1759. say it's

  1760. something that's

  1761. important to

  1762. see.

  1763. I know some

  1764. people find

  1765. it difficult

  1766. to be there

  1767. at a graveside.

  1768. Of course,

  1769. it was the

  1770. practice that

  1771. women didn't

  1772. go to the

  1773. graveside long

  1774. ago or in

  1775. more recent

  1776. times.

  1777. But now

  1778. that's, I

  1779. think, a

  1780. good thing

  1781. that is no

  1782. longer the

  1783. case.

  1784. Everybody's

  1785. got their

  1786. own personal

  1787. opinion and

  1788. not interfering

  1789. with that.

  1790. But seeing a

  1791. coffin going

  1792. into the

  1793. grave, coming

  1794. to just show

  1795. the very last

  1796. respects by

  1797. scattering sand

  1798. or earth into

  1799. it, and the

  1800. grave being

  1801. filled in,

  1802. that has its

  1803. own point to

  1804. make.

  1805. That has its

  1806. own solemnity.

  1807. That has its

  1808. own level of

  1809. teaching.

  1810. And indeed,

  1811. that has its

  1812. own level of

  1813. finality as

  1814. well for this

  1815. life as we

  1816. say goodbye to

  1817. those we

  1818. love.

  1819. It is

  1820. sown in

  1821. weakness.

  1822. But as you

  1823. put that

  1824. coffin into

  1825. the dust,

  1826. as the

  1827. grave is

  1828. filled in,

  1829. one thing

  1830. you're absolutely

  1831. sure of when

  1832. you leave that

  1833. spot, that

  1834. coffin and

  1835. that body

  1836. inside is

  1837. not going

  1838. to move

  1839. until God

  1840. raises it

  1841. from the

  1842. dead.

  1843. It is

  1844. sown in

  1845. weakness.

  1846. weakness.

  1847. But it is

  1848. raised in

  1849. power.

  1850. And it is

  1851. raised in

  1852. power in

  1853. such a way

  1854. that we

  1855. find it

  1856. difficult even

  1857. now even to

  1858. estimate what

  1859. it would be

  1860. like.

  1861. But that's

  1862. what we're

  1863. told.

  1864. The opposite

  1865. of what's put

  1866. in the

  1867. ground is

  1868. what comes

  1869. out in the

  1870. resurrection.

  1871. And it

  1872. is sown a

  1873. natural body.

  1874. It is

  1875. raised a

  1876. spiritual body.

  1877. Now, it

  1878. doesn't mean

  1879. by that that

  1880. the body

  1881. that's raised,

  1882. the resurrection

  1883. body of

  1884. God's people,

  1885. has no

  1886. physical dimensions,

  1887. that it will

  1888. no longer have

  1889. flesh and

  1890. bones and

  1891. the substance

  1892. of our bodies

  1893. as we now

  1894. know it.

  1895. That's not

  1896. what's meant

  1897. by having a

  1898. spiritual body.

  1899. He says there

  1900. is a natural

  1901. body, there

  1902. is a spiritual

  1903. body.

  1904. It is sown a

  1905. natural body,

  1906. raised a

  1907. spiritual body.

  1908. What he means

  1909. by that, I

  1910. think, is it

  1911. is sown as

  1912. the body that

  1913. belongs to

  1914. this life,

  1915. the body that

  1916. belongs to

  1917. our existence

  1918. now, this

  1919. side of the

  1920. grave.

  1921. It is raised

  1922. a spiritual

  1923. body.

  1924. In other

  1925. words, Paul's

  1926. use of the

  1927. word spiritual

  1928. usually means,

  1929. and I think

  1930. means the

  1931. same here,

  1932. it is raised

  1933. in the energy

  1934. of and in the

  1935. dynamic of

  1936. the Holy

  1937. Spirit.

  1938. Because these

  1939. will be

  1940. bodies that

  1941. will be able,

  1942. through the

  1943. power of God,

  1944. the power that

  1945. God gives

  1946. them, will

  1947. be able to

  1948. have the

  1949. Holy Spirit's

  1950. residence to

  1951. the fullness

  1952. that God

  1953. will himself

  1954. bring about.

  1955. So you see,

  1956. it all comes

  1957. together,

  1958. imperishable,

  1959. glory,

  1960. power,

  1961. spiritual,

  1962. lived fully in

  1963. the dynamic of

  1964. the Holy Spirit,

  1965. which is not

  1966. what we are

  1967. capable of here

  1968. now in our

  1969. existence.

  1970. presence.

  1971. And of course,

  1972. we need to

  1973. retain this in

  1974. our mind too,

  1975. that Paul is

  1976. dealing here with

  1977. the resurrection

  1978. body, but you

  1979. mustn't think that

  1980. eternal life is

  1981. just a body

  1982. with some

  1983. spiritual life to

  1984. it.

  1985. What he's talking

  1986. of here is

  1987. God's saved

  1988. people,

  1989. coming as they

  1990. now exist in

  1991. heaven, in their

  1992. souls, coming to

  1993. be reunited with

  1994. their bodies as

  1995. they are raised,

  1996. the bodies are

  1997. raised from the

  1998. ground to meet

  1999. the soul and to

  2000. be combined with

  2001. the soul.

  2002. The whole entire

  2003. person is

  2004. redeemed and the

  2005. redemption of the

  2006. body that Paul

  2007. finds so important

  2008. is concluded at

  2009. the resurrection

  2010. from the dead.

  2011. Well, what

  2012. changes?

  2013. What prospects

  2014. we have?

  2015. What encouragement

  2016. we have?

  2017. What an incentive

  2018. really to be, as

  2019. Paul put it, as

  2020. he wrote to the

  2021. Philippians in his

  2022. great testimony in

  2023. Philippians 3.

  2024. Our encouragement,

  2025. our incentive,

  2026. our prospects.

2027. How did he put it?

  2028. Well, he says,

  2029. I have suffered

  2030. the loss of all

  2031. things.

  2032. I count everything

  2033. as loss because

  2034. of the surpassing

  2035. worth of knowing

  2036. Christ Jesus my

  2037. Lord.

  2038. And for his sake,

  2039. I have suffered

  2040. the loss of all

  2041. things and count

  2042. them but rubbish

  2043. in order that I

  2044. may gain Christ

  2045. and be found in

  2046. him, not having

  2047. a righteousness of

  2048. my own that comes

  2049. from the law,

  2050. but that which

  2051. comes through the

  2052. faith of Christ,

  2053. the righteousness

  2054. of God that

  2055. depends on faith,

  2056. that I may know.

  2057. Why is he saying

  2058. I've put everything

  2059. that I once used

  2060. to trust in behind

  2061. me?

  2062. Why do I think

  2063. that now is

  2064. worthless, he's

  2065. saying, as far as

  2066. my relationship

  2067. with God is

  2068. concerned?

  2069. Because, he says,

  2070. I want to know

  2071. him.

  2072. God has delivered

  2073. me from myself

  2074. so that I may

  2075. know him.

  2076. And the power

  2077. of his resurrection

  2078. and the fellowship

  2079. of his sufferings,

  2080. becoming like him

  2081. in his death,

  2082. that by any means

  2083. possible, I may

  2084. attain the

  2085. resurrection from

  2086. the dead.

  2087. Well, what a

  2088. prospect.

  2089. Is that what

  2090. you're living for?

  2091. Is that your

  2092. prospect?

  2093. Is that your

  2094. hope?

  2095. hope?

  2096. When you come to

2097. die, will it be in

  2098. the expectancy of

  2099. being raised

  2100. imperishable, in

  2101. glory, in power,

2102. in the energy of the

  2103. Holy Spirit?

2104. Or will it be, as

2105. Jesus said, as we read

  2106. in John's Gospel,

  2107. raised to condemnation,

  2108. to the darkness of

  2109. hell forever?

  2110. Because that's the

  2111. alternative of all

  2112. that we've looked at

  2113. this evening.

  2114. Everybody is going to

  2115. be raised, but not

  2116. everybody is going to

  2117. be raised to eternal

  2118. life.

  2119. life.

2120. But let's finish on the

  2121. positive.

  2122. Make sure that you're

  2123. found in Christ.

  2124. Make sure that being

  2125. found in Christ, your

2126. hope, is the hope of

2127. the Gospel, the hope of

2128. eternal life, the hope of

  2129. resurrection, imperishable,

  2130. powerful, glorious life in

  2131. heaven.

  2132. Let's pray.

  2133. Lord, our God, we

  2134. thank you that, although

2135. we find it so difficult to

  2136. handle these aspects of

2137. your Word that take us so

2138. deeply into your truth, we

2139. thank you, O Lord, for the

  2140. clarity of that prospect

2141. that you have given to your

2142. people that is revealed to

  2143. us in these words.

2144. And we give thanks tonight,

2145. Lord, for the way that that

2146. prospect is contained in the

2147. hope that you give to your

2148. people, the hope of eternal

  2149. life, the hope that's

  2150. anchored in the resurrection

  2151. of our Lord himself.

2152. Oh, bless to us, we pray,

  2153. this word this evening.

2154. Bless us in the life that we

2155. presently live so that those

2156. prospects may be those of

  2157. glory with you.

2158. Help us, we pray, to

2159. approach life every day in the

2160. spirit of the psalmist who

2161. could say that God would

2162. guide him by his counsel and

  2163. afterwards receive him into

  2164. glory.

2165. Hear us, we pray, for Jesus'

  2166. sake.

  2167. Amen.

2168. Our final psalm this evening is

  2169. Psalm 84.

  2170. Psalm 84, again, it's in the

  2171. Scottish Psalter.

2172. Verses 8 to 12, the tune is

  2173. Wetherby.

2174. Lord God of hosts, my prayer

  2175. here, O Jacob's God, give

  2176. ear.

2177. See God our shield, look on the

2178. face of thine anointed dear.

2179. Prospect of God the Lord in

2180. verse 11, who is a sun and

2181. shield, heal grace and glory

  2182. give.

2183. So these verses 8 to 12, Lord

2184. God of hosts, my prayer here.

2185. Lord God of hosts, my prayer

  2186. hear, O Jacob's God, give

  2187. ear.

2188. Lord God of hosts, my prayer here.

2189. Lord God of hosts, my prayer here.

2190. For in thy core, one may excel, hath

  2191. a thousand嘉

  2192. is the tenical

  2193. My God's will I keep adorn,

2194. Thine dwell in tents of sin.

2195. For God the Lord has sound and shield,

2196. In grace and glory give,

2197. And will behold the good of them,

2198. That are right to live.

2199. O thou that art the Lord of whose

2200. That man is truly blessed,

2201. Who by the adjured of the end,

2202. On thee alone the best.

  2203. Amen.

2204. I'll go to the main door again after the benediction.

2205. Now may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,

2206. The love of God the Father,

2207. And the communion of the Holy Spirit,

2208. Be with you now and evermore.

  2209. Amen.
