  1. We're going to begin our worship this evening by singing to God's praise in Psalm 96a.

  2. That's in the Sing Psalms version, page 126 of the Psalm book.

  3. We're going to sing from verse 1 to verse 9, and the tune is Glasgow.

  4. Psalm 96a, O sing a new song to the Lord, sing praises to his name, and his salvation

  5. day by day, let all the earth proclaim.

  6. His glory and his mighty deeds to every land declare, how great and awesome is the Lord,

  7. with him no gods compare.

  8. We'll sing from verse 1 to 9 to God's praise.

  9. O sing a new song to the Lord, sing praises to his name, and his salvation day by day.

  10. Let all the earth proclaim.

  11. His glory and his mighty deeds to every land declare, how great and awesome is the Lord,

  12. with him no gods compare.

  13. How great and awesome is the Lord, with him no gods compare.

  14. For other gods are wooden stone, the Lord made heaven's high.

  15. All power and majesty and his, he dwells in glorious light.

  16. All nations to the Lord, the Lord has cried, the glory that is due.

  17. Glow thee and strength, ascribe to God, and praise his name anew.

  18. Glow thee and strength, ascribe to God, and praise his name anew.

  19. Enter his course with joy and dream, and offer him with you.

  20. Worship the Lord in holy fear, all earth before him now.

  21. Glow thee and strength, ascribe to God's praise.

  22. We'll come to God in prayer.

  23. Let us pray.

  24. Lord our God, our Father in heaven, we do thank you to be able to draw near to you,

  25. to be able to worship and praise your name,

  26. to remember that you are king and lord over all,

  27. to remember that your throne, the throne on high, is secure,

  28. and that nothing can remove it, that you are unchanging and unchangeable.

  29. We thank you for these words that we have sung in praise to you,

  30. of all your mighty deeds that you have done,

  31. and the way you declare them to all the nations of this world.

  32. How great and awesome is the Lord, with him no gods compare.

  33. And we thank you that these words are through,

  34. down through every generation and for all people,

  35. far and wide, even this day, these words are through.

  36. For they echo not just the words that we read before us,

  37. but they echo the words that come from yourself as God on high,

  38. that there is no one or nothing that can help us in the way that you can.

  39. And yet, as a people, we so often seek to find a way by ourselves.

  40. We seek to help ourselves with the things that we cannot possibly achieve.

  41. And so we pray, Lord, that you will help us to look to you

  42. and to realize that you are our only help,

  43. that you are our only hope of salvation.

  44. For we do not live in this world alone just for a time,

  45. although we can enjoy many things in this life.

  46. Again and again, we are reminded that here we are but for a moment.

  47. Here our days will pass us by so quickly.

  48. Here our days will come to an end.

  49. But as your word tells us, there is an eternity for all.

  50. And the eternity that we will have depends on how we see you.

  51. You have revealed yourself to us.

  52. You have spoken to us and continue to speak to us

  53. through your wonders of creation and through your word and by your spirit.

  54. And yet, as we see and hear so much, we can still remain deaf.

  55. We can still think that it means nothing and is of little importance.

  56. But, Lord, we pray for your spirit to work in our midst,

  57. to help us to realize the great importance and the great need

  58. of the gospel that we all have,

  59. that there is only life and life eternal

  60. through your Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

  61. For the alternative that we are reminded of in your word

  62. is that we will eternally perish,

  63. that we will suffer, Lord.

  64. And yet, O Lord, even as we hear these words,

  65. we still think that we can go on enjoying life without you.

  66. So how we need you, Lord, and how we pray

  67. that you will give us wisdom,

  68. that you will give us understanding,

  69. that you will give us a knowledge of Jesus Christ,

  70. that we will come and bow before him

  71. and worship him alone.

  72. Father, Sam reminds us that other gods are wood and stone,

  73. but the Lord made heaven's height.

  74. All power and majesty are his.

  75. He dwells in glorious light.

  76. And so we thank you that your gospel is glorious and powerful

  77. and able to shine light into our midst

  78. and even able to open our eyes and to help us to see

  79. and to know the wonder of Jesus.

  80. And so we pray, Lord, that for all of us here

  81. and all who gather to worship you,

  82. whether tuning in online this evening

  83. or whether gathering in other places around our islands,

  84. our nation, or the world,

  85. that your word will go out with power,

  86. that it will go out mightily, Lord,

  87. and mightily to save.

  88. We do thank you for the gospel and all who proclaim it.

  89. We thank you that it is bearing fruit throughout the world.

  90. And may it be, Lord, that that would continue

  91. until the day of the Lord's return,

  92. that we would see and hear of people coming to faith,

  93. that we would see and hear prayers being answered,

  94. even prayers offered many years or even generations ago,

  95. that your blessing would be poured out on nations near and far,

  96. that your peace that passes understanding would come

  97. and reign in our midst.

  98. We do acknowledge, Lord, our sinfulness.

  99. We acknowledge how far short we fall of your glory.

  100. We are sinners before God.

  101. And yet we thank you that there is forgiveness,

  102. that you are a God who longs for people to come

  103. and confess their sins and turn from them

  104. and find with you that mercy,

  105. that mercy that is able to transform and to keep us,

  106. to keep us looking to Jesus.

  107. And we thank you, Lord, for your patience and longsuffering towards us.

  108. We thank you that you are a God who in wrath remembers mercy.

  109. And so we pray, Lord, that you will indeed come in a day of your power.

  110. Remember us as a people here.

  111. We thank you that you are God and Lord

  112. to be called upon in all our different needs.

  113. And so that whatever cares and burdens we may have this evening,

  114. that we can bring them all to you,

  115. as we have heard the one who made the heavens high.

  116. And we pray, Lord, this evening for all who need you,

  117. as we all do, and many with particular needs.

  118. We thank you, Lord, that you are the one who hears and is able to answer prayers

  119. and to answer them even beyond all we ask or imagine.

  120. And help us and give us faith as we pray.

  121. And not to restrain ourselves and our requests,

  122. but to bring them boldly to you,

  123. acknowledging that it's not dependent on us or our own abilities,

  124. but on the one who is able to do all things.

  125. And so we do ask, Lord, that you will bless us and be with us as a people.

  126. Bless our homes and our families and our community far and wide.

  127. That you will remember us, O Lord,

  128. and remember those who are unwell at this time.

  129. Remember those who are in hospital.

  130. Remember those who are going through particular difficulties.

  131. As we have heard, we remember Professor McLeod at this time.

  132. We commit him to you, O Lord, in his own time of weakness just now.

  133. Thankful, Lord, that you are his Lord and God.

  134. Thankful for all that he has done for you

  135. throughout his life and ministry in so many different ways.

  136. And thankful for all the promises that he and we all can claim at such times as this.

  137. That as we rest in you, we have hope.

  138. And so surround him, Lord, with your peace, with your mercy.

  139. Be with his wife and sons and brother and sister too, Lord.

  140. And all who remember him at this time, may you draw near to them and be with them, we pray.

  141. And others going through similar experiences, Lord.

  142. We know that many are known unto us and many throughout our islands and indeed around the world, O Lord.

  143. We know that there are great needs all over the place.

  144. And yet, O Lord, we marvel that your eyes are upon all.

  145. That you hear every prayer offered up.

  146. That you know every need.

  147. That you know every individual near and far.

  148. So, Lord, we thank you that you are able in all things.

  149. We do pray, O Lord, your goodness to us as a nation and as nations of the world.

  150. Again, as we have heard so much in this last week of the coronation of a king.

  151. And as we continue to hear so much going on in our world in terms of conflicts and natural disasters.

  152. Even today, hearing of Bangladesh and Myanmar.

  153. And the cyclone that's hit there and caused such devastation.

  154. And we hear so often, Lord, of tragedies near and far.

  155. As we have remembered today already the sadness over our island at this time after the accident in Balallan.

  156. We know, O Lord, that we are not immune to any of these things.

  157. And you remind us time and again of how precious life is.

  158. And how much we need you.

  159. And how much, O Lord, that you are able to give if we but ask.

  160. And so we pray for your mercy and help to all in different times of need just now.

  161. Remember us, Lord, we pray.

  162. And bless your word to us this evening.

  163. Help us to have ears to hear and to understand the need that we hear in the gospel.

  164. Our own personal need.

  165. And that it would become a personal, become personal to us in a saving way.

  166. To know the Savior, Christ Jesus.

  167. May you bless us together then here and be with us this evening and in the days ahead as well.

  168. We pray for the young ones who meet in the youth fellowship later on.

  169. That your blessing be with them there.

  170. We thank you for that unity among our young people to be able to share in times of fellowship.

  171. And we pray you will bless them and watch over them.

  172. Continue to remember those who are sitting exams in these days as well.

  173. Be their help and be their strength.

  174. Be with students who come home for the holiday season just now as well.

  175. May you bless them in their time at home and look after them day by day.

  176. Remember us, Lord, throughout the week and all that goes on.

  177. As we think of the AGM in this coming week, we give you thanks, Lord, for your goodness to us.

  178. That you remember us, Lord, and you provide for us in so many ways.

  179. And even in times of great change and turbulence over this past year, you have been faithful, Lord.

  180. And we thank you for all who have given generously to us as a people here and as a congregation.

  181. And indeed to our denomination over this past year.

  182. We thank you, Lord, for the many who give generously week by week.

  183. And we pray your blessing on all that we do in your name.

  184. That we honour you that you would honour us.

  185. We pray too, Lord, for the fellowship of your people.

  186. That you will be in our midst, O Lord, to bless, to encourage us and to build us up in the faith.

  187. To rejoice in our Saviour.

  188. To rejoice in the hope of salvation.

  189. To rejoice in sinners being saved.

  190. So, Lord, we commit ourselves into your hands.

  191. Go before us, bless us, guide us and keep us.

  192. Pardoning all our sins as we ask it all.

  193. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  194. Amen.

  195. We're going to sing again to God's praise.

  196. This time in Psalm 24 in the Scottish Psalter.

  197. Page 230 of the psalm books.

  198. Psalm 24.

  199. We're going to sing from verse 1 to verse 5.

  200. And the tune is Paisley.

  201. Psalm 24 at verse 1.

  202. Which reminds us that the earth belongs unto the Lord and all that it contains.

  203. The world that is inhabited and all that there remains.

  204. So, we'll sing from verse 1 to verse 5 to God's praise.

  205. Amen.

  206. The earth belongs unto the Lord.

  207. For the foundations thereof.

  208. And all that there remains.

  209. The earth belongs to the Lord and all that it contains.

  210. The world that is inhabited and all that there remains.

  211. The world that is inhabited and all that there remains.

  212. For the foundations thereof.

  213. The earth belongs to the Lord and all that there is.

  214. The earth belongs to the Lord and all that there is.

  215. on the seas daily,

  216. and he hath been established

  217. upon the floods to stay.

  218. Who is the man that shall assail

  219. into the hill of God?

  220. Or who within his holy place

  221. shall have a firm abode?

  222. Whose hands are clean,

  223. whose heart is pure

  224. and untimely,

  225. who hath not lived in abyssal,

  226. nor sworn be seen holy?

  227. He from the eternal shall receive

  228. the blessing him upon,

  229. and righteousness dim from the God

  230. of his salvation.

  231. I will turn together to reading God's word

  232. in 2 Chronicles chapter 1.

    2 Chronicles 1 chapter mention

  233. 2 Chronicles chapter 1.

    2 Chronicles 1 chapter mention

  234. We can read the whole of this chapter together.

  235. Amen.

  236. Solomon, the son of David,

  237. established himself in his kingdom,

  238. and the Lord his God was with him

  239. and made him exceedingly great.

  240. Solomon spoke to all Israel,

  241. to the commanders of thousands

  242. and of hundreds,

  243. to all the judges,

  244. and to all the leaders in all Israel,

  245. the heads of fathers' houses.

  246. And Solomon and all the assembly with him

  247. went to the high place that was at Gibeon,

  248. for the tent of meeting of God,

  249. which Moses the servant of the Lord

  250. had made in the wilderness,

  251. was there.

  252. But David had brought up the ark of God

  253. from Kiriath-Jerim

  254. to the place that David had prepared for it,

  255. for he had pitched a tent for it in Jerusalem.

  256. Moreover, the bronze altar

  257. that Bezalel, the son of Uri,

  258. son of Ha,

  259. had made was there

  260. before the tabernacle of the Lord.

  261. And Solomon and the assembly

  262. resorted to it.

  263. And Solomon went up there

  264. to the bronze altar before the Lord,

  265. which was at the tent of meeting,

  266. and offered a thousand burnt offerings on it.

  267. In that night,

  268. God appeared to Solomon

  269. and said to him,

  270. Ask what I shall give you.

  271. And Solomon said to God,

  272. You have shown great and steadfast love

  273. to David my father,

  274. and have made me king in his place.

  275. O Lord God,

  276. let your word to David my father

  277. be now fulfilled,

  278. for you have made me king

  279. over a people as numerous

  280. as the dust of the earth.

  281. Give me now wisdom and knowledge

  282. to go out and come in before this people.

  283. For who can govern this people of yours,

  284. which is so great?

  285. God answered Solomon,

  286. Because this was your heart,

  287. and you have not asked possessions,

  288. wealth, honour,

  289. or the life of those who hate you,

  290. and have not even asked long life,

  291. but have asked wisdom and knowledge for yourself,

  292. that you may govern my people

  293. over whom I have made you king.

  294. Wisdom and knowledge are granted to you.

  295. I will also give you riches,

  296. possessions, and honour,

  297. such as none of the kings had who were before you,

  298. and none after you shall have the like.

  299. So Solomon came from the high place at Gibeon,

  300. from before the tent of meeting,

  301. to Jerusalem,

  302. and he reigned over Israel.

  303. Solomon gathered together chariots and horsemen.

  304. He had fourteen hundred chariots

  305. and twelve thousand horsemen,

  306. whom he stationed in the chariot cities,

  307. and with the king in Jerusalem.

  308. And the king made silver and gold

  309. as common in Jerusalem,

  310. as stone,

  311. and he made cedar as plentiful

  312. as the sycamore of Shefela.

  313. And Solomon's import of horses

  314. was from Egypt and Kew,

  315. and the king's traders would buy them

  316. from Kew for a price.

  317. They imported a chariot from Egypt

  318. for six hundred shekels of silver

  319. and a horse for a hundred and fifty.

  320. Likewise, through them,

  321. they were exported to all the kings

  322. of the Hittites and the kings of Syria.

  323. Amen, and may God bless that reading

  324. from his word.

  325. Before we turn to look at that passage,

  326. we're going to sing again to God's praise

  327. in Psalm 126.

  328. The Sing Psalms version,

  329. we'll sing the whole of this psalm

  330. on the tune of the psalm,

  331. and the tune is Denfield.

  332. Psalm 126 on page 171.

  333. When Zion's fortunes God restored,

  334. it was a dream come through.

  335. Our mouths were then with laughter filled,

  336. our tongues with songs anew.

  337. The nations said,

  338. The Lord has done great things for Israel.

  339. The Lord did mighty things for us,

  340. and joy our hearts knew well.

  341. We'll sing the whole of this psalm

  342. to God's praise.

  343. Amen.

  344. When Zion's fortunes God restored,

  345. it was a dream come through.

  346. Our mouths were then with laughter filled,

  347. our tongues with songs anew.

  348. The nations said,

  349. The Lord has done great things for Israel.

  350. The Lord did mighty things for us,

  351. and joy our hearts knew well.

  352. Restore our fortunes,

  353. gracious Lord,

  354. like streams in desert soil.

  355. A joyful harvest will reward

  356. The weak in sober toil.

  357. The man who bailed seed to sow

  358. rose out with tears of grief.

  359. Well come again with songs of joy,

  360. failing his heart was she.

  361. We can turn back together to our reading

  362. in 2 Chronicles chapter 1.

    2 Chronicles 1 chapter mention

  363. 2 Chronicles chapter 1,

    2 Chronicles 1 chapter mention

  364. our focus is mainly on verse 7 to verse 10,

  365. where we see God asking a question of Solomon

  366. and Solomon's response.

  367. We read at verse 7,

  368. In that night God appeared to Solomon

  369. and said to him,

  370. Ask what I shall give you.

  371. And Solomon said to God,

  372. You have shown great and steadfast love

  373. to David my father,

  374. and have made me king in his place.

  375. O Lord God,

  376. let your word today,

  377. my father,

  378. be now fulfilled,

  379. for you have made me king

  380. over a people as numerous

  381. as the dust of the earth.

  382. Give me now wisdom and knowledge

  383. to go out and come in before this people,

  384. for who can govern this people of yours,

  385. which is so great?

  386. God's question and Solomon's response.

  387. And in the midst of what's happening here,

  388. we're seeing the theme of wisdom.

  389. Now, what does it mean to be wise?

  390. What does it mean to be wise?

  391. And as you look around yourself here this evening,

  392. do you see people who you think,

  393. well, they've got wisdom,

  394. or others you maybe think,

  395. well, they're quite foolish.

  396. The Bible describes wisdom and foolishness

  397. in a number of different ways.

  398. It says the fool is the one who says in their heart

  399. that there is no God.

  400. Now, is there any fools in here this evening

  401. in light of that?

  402. I hope there isn't.

  403. There's no one foolish enough to say

  404. that there is no God.

  405. So then what is wisdom?

  406. Well, wisdom is to look to God

  407. and to trust in him,

  408. to trust in what we learn from his scriptures

  409. that reminds us that with him,

  410. there is salvation.

  411. With him, there is much to be keen.

  412. So who is wise and who is foolish?

  413. We often think of wisdom as having knowledge.

  414. And there's many people maybe in here tonight,

  415. many of the younger ones,

  416. you've been sitting exams

  417. or are sitting exams over these weeks.

  418. And you think to yourself,

  419. you've been learning so much over this last year

  420. and now you've got to answer questions.

  421. You've got to show what knowledge

  422. you've learned over this year

  423. and to put it down on paper.

  424. Now, is that knowledge the same as being wise?

  425. Well, you could get straight A's in your exams

  426. and still not be wise,

  427. be quite foolish.

  428. Or you could fail all your exams

  429. and yet still be wise.

  430. How so?

  431. Well, it depends how you look at wisdom

  432. and what wisdom is to you.

  433. Jim Parker wrote a book called Knowing God.

  434. And in that book, he says that wisdom

  435. is the power to see

  436. and the inclination to choose

  437. the best and the highest goal

  438. together with the surest means

  439. of attaining it.

  440. Now, what was,

  441. he's speaking about there,

  442. the best and highest goal?

  443. Well, the clue is in the title of the book.

  444. It is to know God,

  445. to trust in him.

  446. And the surest means of attaining this

  447. is to listen to what his word

  448. is telling us

  449. and to be guided by that word

  450. because that is where wisdom is found.

  451. Wisdom is found with God.

  452. Now, there are many things in this world

  453. that will tell us otherwise,

  454. that our wisdom is found

  455. in many other different means

  456. apart from God.

  457. And yes, there is much we can learn

  458. in this world

  459. from other kinds of teachings

  460. and knowledge.

  461. things that are good to know

  462. and important for us to know.

  463. But through wisdom,

  464. through knowledge,

  465. through understanding

  466. is found with God.

  467. And our reading here this evening

  468. reminds us of that.

  469. Who was the wisest man

  470. to ever live?

  471. Well, the Bible tells us

  472. it was Solomon.

  473. He had wisdom beyond any

  474. who were before him

  475. and any who would be after him.

  476. And yet, even in his own experience,

  477. there were times

  478. when he was foolish.

  479. And yet, God gave him

  480. this wisdom too.

  481. Here is a man who was appointed

  482. as leader over a nation,

  483. over a people.

  484. And in looking for a way forward

  485. in how he was to govern

  486. and rule over these people,

  487. what does he do?

  488. He asks God for wisdom.

  489. And when we think of the world

  490. in which we live

  491. and the turmoil that there is

  492. throughout our nation

  493. and so many nations of the world,

  494. especially as we think

  495. of leadership

  496. and the goals of leadership today,

  497. we think of how wisdom

  498. and leadership is lacking

  499. in so many ways.

  500. And how we need

  501. the wisdom of God

  502. for those who rule over us

  503. on every level of life

  504. and for ourselves

  505. to be led and guided

  506. by the wisdom of God.

  507. And that is what God offers us

  508. through his word.

  509. He invites us to have

  510. this wisdom.

  511. No matter how foolish we've been,

  512. no matter all that we've done

  513. in our life,

  514. he says,

  515. come and I can give you wisdom.

  516. I can help you understand

  517. the things of this world.

  518. Have you ever put yourself

  519. in a situation

  520. and you think,

  521. if I had one wish,

  522. what would I ask for?

  523. What request would I make

  524. if I had one wish?

  525. The world so often

  526. puts that temptation

  527. in front of us

  528. in so many different ways.

  529. It tells us

  530. what we need

  531. and what difference

  532. it'll make in our lives.

  533. And so much of it

  534. is based on finances.

  535. The lottery says

  536. it could be you.

  537. Betting firms say,

  538. win big

  539. and live life to the full.

  540. There's so many temptations

  541. put in front of us

  542. that this is what

  543. is going to satisfy.

  544. This is what is going to make

  545. all the difference

  546. in your life.

  547. The foreign holidays,

  548. the luxury homes,

  549. the fine cars,

  550. all of these things.

  551. This is what you need.

  552. This is what will satisfy you.

  553. But the trouble

  554. and the temptation

  555. that this world offers us

  556. is we only think

  557. of ourselves

  558. and so much of it

  559. just in a temporary way.

  560. Things that will make

  561. a difference

  562. for a moment

  563. but ultimately

  564. are never going to give us

  565. that true satisfaction,

  566. that true joy.

  567. What would you wish for?

  568. Well, here Solomon

  569. is given

  570. that very opportunity.

  571. When God comes to him,

  572. he gives him this opportunity

  573. to have

  574. whatever he wants

  575. and what a response

  576. he has.

  577. How many of us

  578. would respond

  579. like him?

  580. Given this opportunity,

  581. you can have

  582. whatever you want.

  583. how many of us

  584. would respond

  585. and be honest

  586. in the same way

  587. as Solomon responds

  588. here.

  589. But there really is

  590. a lesson for us

  591. both in the question

  592. and the one who asks

  593. the question

  594. and the response

  595. that Solomon gives.

  596. It reminds us

  597. that we can ask

  598. great things

  599. of God.

  600. And it reminds us, too,

  601. that he is able

  602. to give great things

  603. to his people.

  604. Not seeking things

  605. for our glory

  606. but for his.

  607. And so let's just

  608. consider

  609. these two things

  610. together for a time

  611. from this passage.

  612. God's question

  613. and how it shows us

  614. how he is a God

  615. of abundance.

  616. And then secondly,

  617. we look at Solomon's response

  618. and his response

  619. and his response

  620. in asking

  621. for wisdom.

  622. So first,

  623. we look at God's question.

  624. And the question

  625. there in verse 7,

  626. ask what I

  627. shall give you.

  628. Ask what I

  629. shall give you.

  630. Solomon was David's son.

  631. David who had been king

  632. over God's people.

  633. If you just turn back

  634. one page

  635. to the end

  636. of 1 Chronicles,

  637. you see there

  638. where it tells us

  639. that Solomon

  640. was anointed king

  641. and David,

  642. his father,

  643. passed away.

  644. In verse 22,

  645. in the middle

  646. of verse 22,

  647. it says,

  648. they made Solomon

  649. the son of David

  650. king

  651. the second time

  652. and they anointed him

  653. as prince

  654. for the Lord

  655. and Sadoc

  656. as priest.

  657. And then it says

  658. in verse 26,

  659. thus David,

  660. the son of Jesse,

  661. reigned over Israel.

  662. The time that he had

  663. reigned over Israel

  664. was 40 years

  665. and then he died,

  666. it says,

  667. at a good age.

  668. So David had been king

  669. and now Solomon

  670. is anointed king

  671. in his place.

  672. And that's what we see

  673. then as we come into

  674. 2 Chronicles chapter 1.

    2 Chronicles 1 chapter mention

  675. We're really continuing on

  676. from where 1 Chronicles left.

  677. What had proceeded there

  678. we see continuing now

  679. and especially as you look

  680. at verse 1.

  681. Solomon,

  682. the son of David,

  683. established himself

  684. in his kingdom

  685. and the Lord,

  686. his God,

  687. was with him

  688. and made him

  689. exceedingly great.

  690. David had been blessed

  691. blessed by God

  692. and given so much

  693. as king over Israel.

  694. And again,

  695. David was wise

  696. and yet foolish

  697. at times himself

  698. as well.

  699. He was given

  700. the wisdom of God.

  701. And now we come

  702. to Solomon,

  703. his son.

  704. And verse 1

  705. makes it very clear

  706. for us,

  707. the Lord

  708. was with him.

  709. The Lord

  710. was with him.

  711. And for any nation,

  712. for any king,

  713. for any people,

  714. for any church,

  715. for any individual,

  716. that is key.

  717. The Lord

  718. with us.

  719. That is what we need.

  720. And this is what God

  721. offers

  722. to his people.

  723. He is a God

  724. of abundance.

  725. Because with God

  726. on our side,

  727. we have one

  728. who is able

  729. to give us

  730. anything

  731. that we need

  732. or desire.

  733. That's what

  734. his question

  735. is about

  736. in verse 7.

  737. Ask what I

  738. shall give you.

  739. God is saying

  740. this to Solomon.

  741. Able to give him

  742. anything

  743. that this world

  744. has to offer.

  745. The Bible

  746. teaches us

  747. that the earth

  748. is the Lord's

  749. and the fullness

  750. thereof.

  751. We sang that

  752. in Psalm 24.

  753. Everything

  754. we see around us,

  755. it all belongs

  756. to God.

  757. The cattle

  758. on a thousand hills

  759. belong to God,

  760. Psalm 50 tells us.

  761. So you read

  762. throughout Scripture,

  763. you see everything

  764. belongs to God.

  765. And this is the God

  766. who is saying

  767. to Solomon,

  768. Ask,

  769. ask of me

  770. what I shall

  771. give you.

  772. Every year,

  773. there's a day

  774. set aside.

  775. It's called

  776. World Earth Day.

  777. People in that day

  778. are challenged

  779. about the impact

  780. that we have made

  781. or are making

  782. on all the creation

  783. around us.

  784. And year by year,

  785. this goes on,

  786. reminding us

  787. of the great damage

  788. that's being caused

  789. to our world,

  790. to God's creation,

  791. and challenging us

  792. about our attitudes

  793. towards it.

  794. One of the greatest

  795. problems

  796. that this world

  797. sees today

  798. is a selfish

  799. people.

  800. A people who think

  801. it's all

  802. for me.

  803. It's all

  804. for myself

  805. to enjoy

  806. and to do

  807. as I please.

  808. Now we're thinking

  809. of individuals

  810. in that sense,

  811. but also looking

  812. in a broader sense

  813. where we see

  814. it's so much

  815. of life

  816. is for this moment,

  817. for this day.

  818. To reap as much

  819. as we can,

  820. to make as much

  821. money as we can

  822. for ourselves

  823. in the here

  824. and now.

  825. Because we think

  826. it's ours.

  827. And yet God's

  828. word reminds us

  829. that it's his.

  830. Right from the very

  831. beginning

  832. in Genesis

  833. with Adam and Eve,

  834. they were given

  835. care over God's

  836. creation.

  837. To look after it,

  838. to care for it.

  839. Because it is his.

  840. And he is able

  841. to give us

  842. abundantly from it.

  843. He is able

  844. to take away

  845. from us as well.

  846. It is all

  847. in his hands.

  848. The earth

  849. belongs

  850. unto the Lord

  851. and the fullness

  852. thereof.

  853. It is all

  854. his.

  855. And it's in light

  856. of that knowledge

  857. that we see God

  858. asking this question.

  859. Ask what I

  860. shall give you.

  861. It's an open

  862. invitation that

  863. shows God

  864. has control

  865. over everything.

  866. It's a reminder

  867. to Solomon.

  868. It's a reminder

  869. to ourselves.

  870. Who is in

  871. control

  872. of this world?

  873. As we were hearing

  874. this morning,

  875. who is king

  876. over this world?

  877. It is the Lord

  878. who is king.

  879. It is the Lord

  880. who rules

  881. over it all.

  882. He has control

  883. over it all.

  884. He is able

  885. to give

  886. from all

  887. that already

  888. belongs

  889. to him.

  890. God's control

  891. and reach

  892. goes far

  893. and wide,

  894. but it challenges

  895. us.

  896. How much

  897. do we trust

  898. God?

  899. How much

  900. did Solomon

  901. trust God?

  902. Well, fully

  903. as we shall see.

  904. But how much

  905. do we

  906. trust God

  907. ourselves?

  908. When a world

  909. that so often

  910. mocks God,

  911. in a world

  912. that so often

  913. puts God

  914. away and

  915. belittles God

  916. and says

  917. he's not real,

  918. he doesn't exist,

  919. he's just a fairy tale,

  920. a myth,

  921. does that shake

  922. our faith?

  923. Does that shake

  924. our belief

  925. in him?

  926. Does it make us

  927. think,

  928. well,

  929. can God

  930. do this?

  931. Can God

  932. really provide

  933. for me

  934. in this way?

  935. Can God

  936. help me

  937. in this need

  938. that I have?

  939. Do you see

  940. God as

  941. all-powerful,

  942. all-seeing,

  943. all-knowing

  944. God?

  945. Or do we,

  946. because of what

  947. the world says,

  948. put restrictions

  949. on God?

  950. Is your attitude

  951. one where you're

  952. saying,

  953. well,

  954. if only God

  955. could help me

  956. in this,

  957. but he can't?

  958. Or is our attitude

  959. as it should be,

  960. I thank the Lord

  961. that he is

  962. on my side,

  963. that I can

  964. trust him,

  965. that he will

  966. help me,

  967. for that is

  968. his promise.

  969. To be with us

  970. no matter what.

  971. We think of

  972. the opportunity

  973. of the question

  974. that God

  975. puts to Solomon

  976. here.

  977. Have others

  978. experienced

  979. this opportunity

  980. as well?

  981. Well,

  982. you see,

  983. down through

  984. the Scriptures,

  985. that is something

  986. that's put before

  987. others too.

  988. It's put before

  989. us all,

  990. even here

  991. this evening,

  992. because God

  993. asks of us,

  994. ask what I

  995. shall give

  996. to you.

  997. And God

  998. has made

  999. provision.

  1000. And what's

  1001. the greatest

  1002. provision

  1003. that God

  1004. has made

  1005. for us?

  1006. The greatest

  1007. provision is all,

  1008. of all that he

  1009. gave his son,

  1010. that he gave us

  1011. the way,

  1012. not just for

  1013. blessings in

  1014. this life,

  1015. but blessings

  1016. for eternity.

  1017. that in the

  1018. Lord Jesus

  1019. we have one

  1020. who provides

  1021. all that we

  1022. need.

  1023. We're at the

  1024. cross,

  1025. we see he

  1026. gave his life

  1027. that we might

  1028. have life

  1029. and have it

  1030. abundantly,

  1031. have it to

  1032. the full.

  1033. God was

  1034. willing to

  1035. give out of

  1036. his abundance

  1037. because everything

  1038. is his.

  1039. The earth

  1040. belongs to

  1041. the Lord

  1042. in the fullness

  1043. thereof.

  1044. And so much

  1045. so that he

  1046. gave of his

  1047. abundance,

  1048. he gave his

  1049. son,

  1050. the Lord

  1051. Jesus Christ.

  1052. So does that

  1053. not show us

  1054. a God

  1055. who is able,

  1056. a God

  1057. who is willing,

  1058. a God

  1059. who has

  1060. done so much

  1061. to help us

  1062. already?

  1063. So here is

  1064. God saying

  1065. to us

  1066. this evening,

  1067. ask what I

  1068. shall give

  1069. you.

  1070. And what's

  1071. our response?

  1072. What are we

  1073. asking for?

  1074. It's another

  1075. wonderful

  1076. incident in

  1077. the Gospels

  1078. where we

  1079. see this

  1080. very same

  1081. kind of

  1082. question being

  1083. asked.

  1084. Jesus

  1085. asks this

  1086. question in

  1087. two different

  1088. settings.

  1089. He asks,

  1090. what do you

  1091. want me

  1092. to do

  1093. for you?

  1094. It's in the

  1095. Gospel of

  1096. Mark,

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  1097. chapter 10.

  1098. And the

  1099. first account

  1100. is when he's

  1101. with James

  1102. and John.

  1103. Two of his

  1104. disciples,

  1105. two you would

  1106. think would

  1107. know best

  1108. of all

  1109. what to

  1110. ask for.

  1111. And Jesus

  1112. says to

  1113. them,

  1114. what do you

  1115. want me

  1116. to do

  1117. for you?

  1118. And what's

  1119. their response?

  1120. Well, you see,

  1121. they're fools.

  1122. They say,

  1123. we want one

  1124. to sit on

  1125. your right

  1126. hand and

  1127. one on

  1128. your left

  1129. hand in

  1130. glory.

  1131. They're asking

  1132. honor and

  1133. glory for

  1134. themselves.

  1135. Such a

  1136. selfish

  1137. response.

  1138. And what's

  1139. Jesus'

  1140. response to

  1141. that?

  1142. He says,

  1143. you don't

  1144. know what

  1145. you are

  1146. asking for.

  1147. You don't

  1148. realize what

  1149. you are

  1150. asking for.

  1151. Then the

  1152. very same

  1153. question is

  1154. asked of

  1155. someone in

  1156. a very

  1157. different

  1158. situation.

  1159. And later

  1160. on, at

  1161. the end

  1162. of chapter

  1163. 10 of

  1164. Mark,

  1165. that same

  1166. question,

  1167. what do

  1168. you want

  1169. me to

  1170. do for

  1171. you,

  1172. is asked

  1173. of a

  1174. man called

  1175. Bartimaeus,

  1176. a blind

  1177. beggar.

  1178. Here is

  1179. someone who's

  1180. been suffering

  1181. most of

  1182. his life,

  1183. begging at

  1184. the side

  1185. of the

  1186. road,

  1187. and Jesus

  1188. asks him,

  1189. what do

  1190. you want

  1191. me to

  1192. do for

  1193. you?

  1194. Now,

  1195. of all

  1196. the things

  1197. he could

  1198. have asked

  1199. for,

  1200. of all

  1201. the things

  1202. that this

  1203. one who

  1204. cannot give

  1205. anything in

  1206. this whole

  1207. world,

  1208. what does

  1209. he ask

  1210. for?

  1211. He says,

  1212. Lord,

  1213. that I

  1214. might see.

  1215. There is

  1216. wisdom.

  1217. Lord,

  1218. that I

  1219. might see.

  1220. And he's

  1221. not just

  1222. talking about

  1223. physically

  1224. seeing.

  1225. He knows

  1226. who it

  1227. is that's

  1228. passing by.

  1229. He knows

  1230. it's Jesus

  1231. that's passing

  1232. by,

  1233. and it is

  1234. him that

  1235. he wants

  1236. to see,

  1237. because you

  1238. see,

  1239. after he

  1240. sees,

  1241. it says

  1242. he follows

  1243. him on

  1244. the way.

  1245. He sees

  1246. Jesus

  1247. and follows

  1248. him.

  1249. So,

  1250. Jesus asks

  1251. that question,

  1252. what do

  1253. you want

  1254. me to

  1255. do for

  1256. you?

  1257. What do

  1258. we want

  1259. of God

  1260. tonight?

  1261. What would

  1262. you ask

  1263. God for

  1264. if he was

  1265. to say,

  1266. I have

  1267. this one

  1268. thing that

  1269. you can

  1270. ask for?

  1271. What are

  1272. you going

  1273. to ask

  1274. for?

  1275. Well,

  1276. Solomon has

  1277. asked that

  1278. question.

  1279. Ask

  1280. what I

  1281. shall

  1282. give you.

  1283. God for

  1284. me?

  1285. The letter

  1286. of James

  1287. says,

  1288. if anyone

  1289. lacks

  1290. wisdom,

  1291. let him

  1292. ask God

  1293. who gives

  1294. generously to

  1295. all without

  1296. reproach.

  1297. do we

  1298. lack

  1299. wisdom

  1300. ourselves

  1301. tonight?

  1302. Do we

  1303. lack

  1304. wisdom

  1305. from the

  1306. God

  1307. who is

  1308. able to

  1309. give us

  1310. anything

  1311. in this

  1312. world?

  1313. What are

  1314. we asking

  1315. for?

  1316. Are we

  1317. pleading

  1318. with him?

  1319. Like

  1320. Bartimaeus,

  1321. Lord,

  1322. let me

  1323. see.

  1324. Let me

  1325. see

  1326. Jesus.

  1327. because

  1328. there

  1329. is

  1330. wisdom.

  1331. God

  1332. says,

  1333. ask

  1334. for

  1335. whatever

  1336. you

  1337. want

  1338. me

  1339. to

  1340. give

  1341. to

  1342. you.

  1343. So,

  1344. how

  1345. do

  1346. you

  1347. respond?

  1348. Well,

  1349. let's

  1350. look at

  1351. secondly,

  1352. Solomon's

  1353. response

  1354. and the

  1355. response

  1356. that he

  1357. gives

  1358. to God

  1359. with this

  1360. request.

  1361. He says

  1362. this in

  1363. verse 10,

  1364. give me

  1365. no

  1366. wisdom

  1367. and

  1368. knowledge.

  1369. Give

  1370. me

  1371. no

  1372. wisdom

  1373. and

  1374. knowledge.

  1375. So,

  1376. as we

  1377. see

  1378. a God

  1379. who is

  1380. a God

  1381. of

  1382. abundance,

  1383. we see

  1384. the way

  1385. to enjoy

  1386. this

  1387. abundance

  1388. is a

  1389. right

  1390. view

  1391. of

  1392. who

  1393. God

  1394. is

  1395. and

  1396. a

  1397. right

  1398. response

  1399. to

  1400. God.

  1401. If

  1402. we

  1403. want

  1404. to

  1405. know

  1406. the

  1407. blessing

  1408. of

  1409. God

  1410. in

  1411. our

  1412. lives,

  1413. we

  1414. need

  1415. to

  1416. learn

  1417. lessons

  1418. from

  1419. how

  1420. Solomon

  1421. responds

  1422. in this

  1423. chapter.

  1424. There's

  1425. three

  1426. things we

  1427. can

  1428. take

  1429. from

  1430. his

  1431. response

  1432. and

  1433. his

  1434. approach

  1435. to

  1436. God.

  1437. The

  1438. first

  1439. thing

  1440. is

  1441. this,

  1442. he

  1443. worships

  1444. God.

  1445. There

  1446. is

  1447. the

  1448. first

  1449. thing

  1450. that we

  1451. want to

  1452. take

  1453. from

  1454. this.

  1455. He

  1456. worships

  1457. God.

  1458. You

  1459. see it

  1460. in

  1461. verse

  1462. 6.

  1463. The

  1464. whole

  1465. setting

  1466. here

  1467. is

  1468. one

  1469. where

  1470. Solomon

  1471. has

  1472. gone

  1473. to

  1474. worship

  1475. God.

  1476. He

  1477. went

  1478. up

  1479. there

  1480. to

  1481. the

  1482. bronze

  1483. altar

  1484. before

  1485. the

  1486. Lord

  1487. which

  1488. was

  1489. at

  1490. the

  1491. tent

  1492. of

  1493. meeting

  1494. and

  1495. offered

  1496. a

  1497. thousand

  1498. burnt

  1499. offerings

  1500. on it.

  1501. He

  1502. was

  1503. giving

  1504. worship

  1505. to

  1506. God.

  1507. The

  1508. book

  1509. of

  1510. Proverbs

  1511. is

  1512. a

  1513. book

  1514. that's

  1515. full

  1516. of

  1517. wisdom.

  1518. A

  1519. book

  1520. full

  1521. of

  1522. wisdom.

  1523. And

  1524. it

  1525. says

  1526. the

  1527. fear

  1528. of

  1529. the

  1530. Lord

  1531. is

  1532. the

  1533. beginning

  1534. of

  1535. all

  1536. wisdom.

  1537. We

  1538. were

  1539. reminded

  1540. of

  1541. that

  1542. this

  1543. morning

  1544. as

  1545. well.

  1546. That

  1547. word

  1548. fear

  1549. means

  1550. worship

  1551. and

  1552. love

  1553. of

  1554. God.

  1555. Worshiping

  1556. him

  1557. with

  1558. all

  1559. our

  1560. hearts

  1561. as

  1562. Solomon

  1563. is

  1564. doing

  1565. here.

  1566. Proverbs

    Proverbs 4:7

  1567. chapter

  1568. 4

  1569. verse

  1570. 7

  1571. says

  1572. the

  1573. beginning

  1574. of

  1575. wisdom

  1576. is

  1577. this.

  1578. Get

  1579. wisdom

  1580. and

  1581. whatever

  1582. you

  1583. get

  1584. get

  1585. insight

  1586. get

  1587. understanding.

  1588. I

  1589. was

  1590. at

  1591. a

  1592. funeral

  1593. this

  1594. week

  1595. over

  1596. on the

  1597. west

  1598. side

  1599. where

  1600. that

  1601. verse

  1602. was

  1603. quoted.

  1604. A

  1605. Christian

  1606. man

  1607. who

  1608. had

  1609. passed

  1610. away

  1611. and

  1612. he

  1613. was

  1614. one

  1615. who

  1616. often

  1617. asked

  1618. questions

  1619. and

  1620. sought

  1621. understanding

  1622. from

  1623. God's

  1624. word.

  1625. And

  1626. this

  1627. verse

  1628. was

  1629. quoted

  1630. in the

  1631. sense

  1632. of

  1633. this

  1634. was

  1635. his

  1636. desire.

  1637. He

  1638. longed

  1639. for

  1640. wisdom

  1641. more

  1642. than that

  1643. he

  1644. longed

  1645. for

  1646. understanding.

  1647. Being

  1648. able

  1649. to apply

  1650. that

  1651. wisdom

  1652. to

  1653. our

  1654. lives.

  1655. And

  1656. that

  1657. is

  1658. wisdom.

  1659. Getting

  1660. understanding,

  1661. getting

  1662. knowledge.

  1663. knowledge.

  1664. And this

  1665. begins by

  1666. giving

  1667. worship

  1668. to God.

  1669. By

  1670. acknowledging

  1671. him for

  1672. who he

  1673. is and

  1674. what he

  1675. is able

  1676. to do.

  1677. Exodus

    Exodus 34:14

  1678. 34 verse

  1679. 14 says,

  1680. Do not

  1681. worship any

  1682. other God,

  1683. for the

  1684. Lord,

  1685. whose name

  1686. is a

  1687. jealous God.

  1688. He is

  1689. worthy of

  1690. all our

  1691. worship.

  1692. We are to

  1693. come to

  1694. him.

  1695. somebody

  1696. once

  1697. said,

  1698. If God

  1699. is not

  1700. Lord of

  1701. all,

  1702. he is

  1703. not

  1704. Lord

  1705. at all.

  1706. And

  1707. that's a

  1708. reminder

  1709. for our

  1710. own

  1711. lives

  1712. too.

  1713. Is he

  1714. Lord

  1715. of

  1716. all?

  1717. Because

  1718. if not,

  1719. he is

  1720. not

  1721. Lord

  1722. at all.

  1723. If

  1724. there is

  1725. something

  1726. that we

  1727. are

  1728. putting

  1729. before

  1730. God

  1731. and

  1732. worshiping

  1733. before

  1734. God

  1735. and

  1736. seeing

  1737. as

  1738. more

  1739. important

  1740. than

  1741. God,

  1742. then he's

  1743. not

  1744. Lord

  1745. of

  1746. all.

  1747. And

  1748. there

  1749. may

  1750. be

  1751. things

  1752. we

  1753. have

  1754. to

  1755. remove

  1756. from

  1757. our

  1758. lives,

  1759. take

  1760. out

  1761. of

  1762. our

  1763. lives

  1764. because

  1765. it's

  1766. keeping

  1767. us

  1768. from

  1769. worshiping

  1770. God

  1771. as

  1772. we

  1773. should.

  1774. Solomon

  1775. as we

  1776. see

  1777. here

  1778. was

  1779. worshiping

  1780. God,

  1781. giving

  1782. his

  1783. whole

  1784. heart

  1785. to

  1786. him

  1787. in

  1788. worship.

  1789. And

  1790. there

  1791. is

  1792. how

  1793. we

  1794. too

  1795. get

  1796. wisdom.

  1797. It's

  1798. not

  1799. just

  1800. coming

  1801. in

  1802. the

  1803. routine

  1804. of

  1805. worship.

  1806. It's

  1807. not

  1808. just

  1809. coming

  1810. because

  1811. it's

  1812. what

  1813. we

  1814. do

  1815. at

  1816. eleven

  1817. and

  1818. half

  1819. past

  1820. six

  1821. on

  1822. the

  1823. Lord's

  1824. day.

  1825. It's

  1826. coming

  1827. because

  1828. we

  1829. long

  1830. to

  1831. meet

  1832. with

  1833. God.

  1834. We

  1835. long

  1836. to

  1837. give

  1838. our

  1839. worship

  1840. and

  1841. praise

  1842. to

  1843. him

  1844. because

  1845. we

  1846. recognize

  1847. that

  1848. we

  1849. depend

  1850. on

  1851. him

  1852. for

  1853. all

  1854. things.

  1855. So

  1856. do

  1857. we

  1858. worship

  1859. the Lord

  1860. aright?

  1861. Are we

  1862. seeking

  1863. wisdom

  1864. from

  1865. him

  1866. in

  1867. that

  1868. way?

  1869. The

  1870. second

  1871. thing

  1872. we see

  1873. with

  1874. Solomon

  1875. here is

  1876. that

  1877. he is

  1878. humble.

  1879. He is

  1880. humble

  1881. before

  1882. God.

  1883. And

  1884. wisdom

  1885. is so

  1886. often

  1887. closely

  1888. linked

  1889. to

  1890. humility.

  1891. And

  1892. you see

  1893. that

  1894. with

  1895. Solomon

  1896. later

  1897. in

  1898. his

  1899. life.

  1900. He

  1901. lets

  1902. pride

  1903. come

  1904. in.

  1905. Pride

  1906. is

  1907. so

  1908. often

  1909. our

  1910. downfall.

  1911. And

  1912. we

  1913. see

  1914. it

  1915. with

  1916. Solomon.

  1917. Instead

  1918. of

  1919. humility

  1920. pride

  1921. comes

  1922. in.

  1923. But

  1924. here

  1925. we

  1926. see

  1927. a

  1928. humility

  1929. in

  1930. him.

  1931. We

  1932. see

  1933. it

  1934. in

  1935. verse

  1936. 7

  1937. and

  1938. verse

  1939. 8.

  1940. When

  1941. God

  1942. asked

  1943. that

  1944. question

  1945. of him,

  1946. ask

  1947. what

  1948. I

  1949. shall

  1950. give

  1951. you,

  1952. Solomon

  1953. said

  1954. to

  1955. God,

  1956. you

  1957. have

  1958. shown

  1959. great

  1960. and

  1961. steadfast

  1962. love

  1963. to

  1964. David

  1965. my

  1966. father,

  1967. and

  1968. I've

  1969. made

  1970. me

  1971. king

  1972. in

  1973. his

  1974. place.

  1975. You

  1976. see

  1977. he's

  1978. saying

  1979. that

  1980. you

  1981. have

  1982. made

  1983. me

  1984. king.

  1985. It's

  1986. not

  1987. an

  1988. honor

  1989. he's

  1990. put

  1991. on

  1992. himself.

  1993. He's

  1994. seeing

  1995. it

  1996. as

  1997. God

  1998. the

  1999. Lord

  2000. has

  2001. made

  2002. him

  2003. king.

  2004. And

  2005. then

  2006. he

  2007. goes

  2008. on

  2009. to

  2010. say

  2011. oh

  2012. Lord

  2013. God

  2014. let

  2015. your

  2016. word

  2017. to

  2018. David

  2019. my

  2020. father

  2021. be

  2022. now

  2023. fulfilled

  2024. for

  2025. you

  2026. have

  2027. made

  2028. me

  2029. king

  2030. over

  2031. a

  2032. people

  2033. as

  2034. numerous

  2035. as

  2036. the

  2037. dust

  2038. of

  2039. this

  2040. earth.

  2041. And

  2042. that

  2043. they

  2044. are

  2045. your

  2046. people.

  2047. This

  2048. people

  2049. for

  2050. who

  2051. can

  2052. govern

  2053. the

  2054. end

  2055. of

  2056. verse

  2057. 10

  2058. who

  2059. can

  2060. govern

  2061. this

  2062. people

  2063. of

  2064. yours

  2065. which

  2066. is

  2067. so

  2068. great.

  2069. There's

  2070. a

  2071. sense

  2072. of

  2073. humility

  2074. in

  2075. Solomon

  2076. here.

  2077. It's

  2078. not

  2079. his

  2080. power.

  2081. It's

  2082. not

  2083. his

  2084. authority

  2085. or

  2086. his

  2087. achievements

  2088. in

  2089. life

  2090. that

  2091. are

  2092. important.

  2093. It

  2094. is

  2095. honoring

  2096. God.

  2097. Humility

  2098. is

  2099. something

  2100. that's

  2101. so

  2102. lacking

  2103. in

  2104. life

  2105. today

  2106. so

  2107. often.

  2108. When

  2109. you

  2110. watch

  2111. Parliament

  2112. whether

  2113. it's

  2114. in

  2115. Westminster

  2116. or

  2117. Holyrood

  2118. how

  2119. often

  2120. do

  2121. you

  2122. see

  2123. people

  2124. stand

  2125. up

  2126. and

  2127. apologize

  2128. and

  2129. say

  2130. I

  2131. was

  2132. wrong.

  2133. I

  2134. apologize

  2135. because

  2136. instead

  2137. they

  2138. blame

  2139. somebody

  2140. else.

  2141. It's

  2142. always

  2143. somebody

  2144. else's

  2145. fault.

  2146. And

  2147. we're

  2148. the

  2149. same

  2150. ourselves

  2151. in so

  2152. many

  2153. ways.

  2154. We

  2155. look

  2156. for

  2157. someone

  2158. else

  2159. to

  2160. blame

  2161. instead

  2162. of

  2163. acknowledging

  2164. our

  2165. own

  2166. fault.

  2167. But

  2168. if we

  2169. humble

  2170. ourselves

  2171. later

  2172. on in

  2173. chapter

  2174. 7

  2175. of

  2176. this

  2177. book

  2178. it

  2179. speaks

  2180. about

  2181. verse

  2182. 11

  2183. Solomon

  2184. finished

  2185. the

  2186. house

  2187. of the

  2188. Lord

  2189. and

  2190. the

  2191. king's

  2192. house

  2193. and

  2194. everything

  2195. that

  2196. the

  2197. Lord

  2198. had

  2199. done

  2200. and

  2201. the

  2202. Lord

  2203. appeared

  2204. it

  2205. says

  2206. in

  2207. verse

  2208. 12

  2209. and

  2210. said

  2211. to

  2212. him

  2213. I

  2214. have

  2215. heard

  2216. your

  2217. prayer

  2218. and

  2219. I

  2220. have

  2221. chosen

  2222. this

  2223. place

  2224. for

  2225. myself

  2226. as

  2227. a

  2228. house

  2229. of

  2230. sacrifice

  2231. when I

  2232. shut

  2233. up

  2234. the

  2235. heavens

  2236. so

  2237. there

  2238. is

  2239. no

  2240. rain

  2241. or

  2242. command

  2243. the

  2244. locust

  2245. to

  2246. devour

  2247. the

  2248. land

  2249. or send

  2250. pestilence

  2251. among

  2252. my

  2253. people

  2254. if

  2255. my

  2256. people

  2257. who

  2258. are

  2259. called

  2260. by

  2261. my

  2262. name

  2263. humble

  2264. themselves

  2265. and pray

  2266. and seek

  2267. my

  2268. face.

  2269. There is a

  2270. sense of

  2271. humbling

  2272. before

  2273. God.

  2274. James

  2275. again

  2276. in the

  2277. epistle

  2278. in the

  2279. New

  2280. Testament

  2281. says

  2282. humble

  2283. yourselves

  2284. before

  2285. the

  2286. Lord

  2287. and

  2288. he

  2289. will

  2290. exalt

  2291. you.

  2292. And

  2293. that's

  2294. the

  2295. very

  2296. thing

  2297. that

  2298. we

  2299. see

  2300. with

  2301. Solomon

  2302. here.

  2303. He

  2304. humbles

  2305. himself.

  2306. He

  2307. asks

  2308. not

  2309. for

  2310. possession

  2311. or

  2312. glory

  2313. or

  2314. honor.

  2315. He

  2316. asks

  2317. for

  2318. wisdom.

  2319. And

  2320. what we

  2321. see

  2322. is

  2323. as

  2324. he

  2325. gets

  2326. wisdom

  2327. he

  2328. gets

  2329. everything

  2330. else

  2331. with it

  2332. too.

  2333. because

  2334. he

  2335. asked

  2336. a

  2337. right.

  2338. In

  2339. verse

  2340. 11

  2341. and

  2342. the

  2343. end

  2344. of

  2345. verse

  2346. 11

  2347. into

  2348. verse

  2349. 12

  2350. he

  2351. says

  2352. you

  2353. have

  2354. asked

  2355. wisdom

  2356. and

  2357. knowledge

  2358. for

  2359. yourself

  2360. that

  2361. you

  2362. may

  2363. govern

  2364. my

  2365. people

  2366. over

  2367. whom

  2368. I

  2369. have

  2370. made

  2371. you

  2372. king.

  2373. Wisdom

  2374. and

  2375. knowledge

  2376. are

  2377. granted

  2378. to

  2379. you.

  2380. I

  2381. will

  2382. also

  2383. give

  2384. you

  2385. riches

  2386. possessions

  2387. and

  2388. honor.

  2389. Are

  2390. we

  2391. writing

  2392. asking

  2393. the

  2394. Lord

  2395. a

  2396. right?

  2397. the

  2398. one

  2399. who

  2400. can

  2401. abundantly

  2402. give

  2403. but

  2404. are we

  2405. asking

  2406. a

  2407. right?

  2408. The

  2409. final thing

  2410. we see

  2411. of this

  2412. is

  2413. he's

  2414. not

  2415. selfish.

  2416. He's

  2417. humble

  2418. and

  2419. he's

  2420. not

  2421. selfish.

  2422. He

  2423. realizes

  2424. his

  2425. God

  2426. given

  2427. responsibility

  2428. to

  2429. govern

  2430. God's

  2431. people.

  2432. He

  2433. says

  2434. not

  2435. my

  2436. people

  2437. but

  2438. this

  2439. great

  2440. people

  2441. of

  2442. yours.

  2443. If

  2444. only

  2445. kings

  2446. and

  2447. rulers

  2448. in this

  2449. world

  2450. would

  2451. see

  2452. people

  2453. as

  2454. God's

  2455. people.

  2456. This

  2457. great

  2458. people

  2459. of

  2460. yours.

  2461. But

  2462. instead

  2463. they're

  2464. so

  2465. often

  2466. selfish

  2467. and

  2468. so

  2469. are

  2470. we.

  2471. We

  2472. are

  2473. a

  2474. selfish

  2475. people.

  2476. But

  2477. who

  2478. put

  2479. others

  2480. first?

  2481. Who

  2482. shows

  2483. us

  2484. what

  2485. it

  2486. is

  2487. to

  2488. put

  2489. others

  2490. before

  2491. ourselves?

  2492. The

  2493. greatest

  2494. one of

  2495. all

  2496. is

  2497. the

  2498. Lord

  2499. Jesus

  2500. Christ

  2501. putting

  2502. others

  2503. before

  2504. himself.

  2505. As

  2506. it

  2507. says

  2508. in

  2509. Philippians

    Philippians 2:6

  2510. 2

  2511. verse

  2512. 6

  2513. who

  2514. being

  2515. in

  2516. the

  2517. very

  2518. nature

  2519. God

  2520. did

  2521. not

  2522. consider

  2523. equality

  2524. with

  2525. God

  2526. something

  2527. to be

  2528. grasped

  2529. but

  2530. made

  2531. himself

  2532. nothing.

  2533. Taking

  2534. the

  2535. very

  2536. nature

  2537. of

  2538. a

  2539. servant

  2540. being

  2541. made

  2542. in

  2543. human

  2544. likeness

  2545. and

  2546. being

  2547. found

  2548. in

  2549. appearance

  2550. as

  2551. a

  2552. man

  2553. he

  2554. humbled

  2555. himself

  2556. and

  2557. became

  2558. obedient

  2559. to

  2560. death

  2561. even

  2562. death

  2563. on

  2564. a

  2565. cross.

  2566. Therefore

  2567. God

  2568. exalted

  2569. him

  2570. to

  2571. the

  2572. highest

  2573. place.

  2574. He

  2575. came

  2576. to

  2577. serve

  2578. and

  2579. to

  2580. give

  2581. his

  2582. life

  2583. as

  2584. a

  2585. ransom

  2586. for

  2587. many.

  2588. He

  2589. died.

  2590. He

  2591. put

  2592. others

  2593. before

  2594. himself.

  2595. He

  2596. said,

  2597. Father,

  2598. forgive

  2599. them

  2600. for

  2601. they

  2602. know

  2603. not

  2604. what

  2605. they

  2606. do.

  2607. There

  2608. is

  2609. mercy

  2610. towards

  2611. a

  2612. foolish

  2613. people

  2614. and

  2615. he's

  2616. saying,

  2617. will

  2618. you not

  2619. ask

  2620. for

  2621. wisdom

  2622. tonight.

  2623. Wisdom

  2624. to

  2625. know

  2626. God,

  2627. to

  2628. trust

  2629. him,

  2630. to

  2631. not

  2632. be

  2633. foolish

  2634. and

  2635. say

  2636. there

  2637. is

  2638. no

  2639. God,

  2640. but

  2641. to

  2642. believe

  2643. in

  2644. him

  2645. who

  2646. is

  2647. able

  2648. to

  2649. provide

  2650. so

  2651. abundantly

  2652. to

  2653. us

  2654. in

  2655. all

  2656. ways

  2657. if

  2658. we

  2659. would

  2660. trust

  2661. in

  2662. him.

  2663. Abraham

  2664. Kuyper,

  2665. he once

  2666. said

  2667. this,

  2668. writing

  2669. a

  2670. poem,

  2671. he said,

  2672. I am

  2673. not

  2674. sent

  2675. a

  2676. pilgrim

  2677. here,

  2678. my

  2679. heart

  2680. with

  2681. earth

  2682. to

  2683. fill,

  2684. but

  2685. I

  2686. am

  2687. here

  2688. God's

  2689. grace

  2690. to

  2691. learn

  2692. and

  2693. serve

  2694. God's

  2695. sovereign

  2696. will.

  2697. He

  2698. leads

  2699. me

  2700. on

  2701. through

  2702. smiles

  2703. and

  2704. tears,

  2705. grief

  2706. follows

  2707. gladness

  2708. still,

  2709. but

  2710. let me

  2711. welcome

  2712. both

  2713. alike

  2714. since

  2715. both

  2716. work

  2717. out

  2718. his

  2719. will.

  2720. No

  2721. service

  2722. in

  2723. itself

  2724. is

  2725. small,

  2726. none

  2727. great

  2728. though

  2729. earth

  2730. it

  2731. fill.

  2732. But

  2733. that

  2734. is

  2735. small

  2736. that

  2737. seeks

  2738. its

  2739. own

  2740. and

  2741. great

  2742. that

  2743. seeks

  2744. God's

  2745. will.

  2746. Then

  2747. hold

  2748. my

  2749. hand,

  2750. most

  2751. precious,

  2752. most

  2753. gracious

  2754. Lord,

  2755. guide

  2756. all

  2757. my

  2758. doings

  2759. still,

  2760. and let

  2761. this

  2762. be

  2763. my

  2764. life's

  2765. one

  2766. aim,

  2767. to

  2768. do

  2769. and

  2770. bear

  2771. thy

  2772. will.

  2773. To

  2774. have

  2775. wisdom

  2776. and to

  2777. delight

  2778. in

  2779. God's

  2780. will.

  2781. Are

  2782. we

  2783. seeking

  2784. God

  2785. in

  2786. the

  2787. right

  2788. way

  2789. today?

  2790. Are

  2791. we

  2792. wise?

  2793. Are

  2794. we

  2795. wise

  2796. when

  2797. he

  2798. says,

  2799. ask

  2800. what

  2801. I

  2802. shall

  2803. give

  2804. to

  2805. you?

  2806. Do

  2807. we

  2808. want

  2809. honor

  2810. and

  2811. glory

  2812. like

  2813. James

  2814. and

  2815. John?

  2816. Or

  2817. do

  2818. we

  2819. have

  2820. the

  2821. heart

  2822. of

  2823. Bartimaeus?

  2824. Lord,

  2825. that I

  2826. would

  2827. see,

  2828. and that

  2829. we

  2830. would see

  2831. him

  2832. and

  2833. follow

  2834. him

  2835. on

  2836. the

  2837. way.

  2838. Our

  2839. eyes

  2840. fixed

  2841. on

  2842. Jesus.

  2843. May

  2844. God

  2845. grant

  2846. us

  2847. wisdom

  2848. to

  2849. see.

  2850. Let

  2851. us

  2852. pray.

  2853. Our

  2854. Father in

  2855. heaven,

  2856. we give

  2857. you thanks

  2858. for your

  2859. word and

  2860. for how

  2861. it teaches

  2862. us so

  2863. much.

  2864. It

  2865. teaches

  2866. us

  2867. wisdom

  2868. and

  2869. knowledge

  2870. are the

  2871. greatest

  2872. thing

  2873. to

  2874. desire,

  2875. and that

  2876. knowledge

  2877. and wisdom

  2878. is found

  2879. in the

  2880. Lord

  2881. Jesus.

  2882. So we

  2883. pray this

  2884. evening,

  2885. Lord,

  2886. to help

  2887. us to

  2888. be wise,

  2889. not to

  2890. be fools

  2891. and to

  2892. deny

  2893. God,

  2894. but to

  2895. be wise

  2896. and ask

  2897. God that

  2898. we would

  2899. see and

  2900. see Jesus

  2901. and follow

  2902. him on

  2903. the way.

  2904. So bless

  2905. us, we

  2906. pray, and

  2907. your word

  2908. to us

  2909. and forgive

  2910. our sin

  2911. as we

  2912. ask it

  2913. all.

  2914. In

  2915. Jesus'

  2916. name,

  2917. Amen.

  2918. We're

  2919. going to

  2920. conclude by

  2921. singing to

  2922. God's

  2923. praise in

  2924. Psalm 20

  2925. in the

  2926. Scottish

  2927. Psalter,

  2928. page 224

  2929. of the

  2930. psalm

  2931. books.

  2932. Psalm 20

  2933. on page

  2934. 224,

  2935. we'll

  2936. sing from

  2937. verse 5

  2938. down to

  2939. the end

  2940. of the

  2941. psalm.

  2942. In thy

  2943. salvation we

  2944. will joy,

  2945. in our

  2946. God's name

  2947. we will

  2948. display our

  2949. banners,

  2950. and the

  2951. Lord thy

  2952. prayers all

  2953. fulfill.

  2954. We'll sing

  2955. from verse 5

  2956. down to the

  2957. end of the

  2958. psalm,

  2959. and the

  2960. tune is

  2961. Evan.

  2962. Amen.

  2963. In thy

  2964. salvation we

  2965. will

  2966. joy,

  2967. in our

  2968. God's

  2969. name we

  2970. will

  2971. display

  2972. our

  2973. banners,

  2974. Shit.

  2975. Men are

  2992. Lord,

  2993. thy

3002. In child your son could come with his

  3003. some horses crossed upon,

3004. but we remain where will the name

3005. of our Lord God alone.

3006. We rise and uprise and when they are bowing down and fall,

3007. deliver our Lord and let the King

3008. pass here when we do come.

3009. After the benediction, I'll go to the door to my left.

3010. We'll close with the benediction.

3011. Now may grace, mercy, and peace from God,

3012. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit rest upon

3013. and abide with us all now and forevermore.

  3014. Amen.
