  1. We're going to begin our worship by singing to God's praise. We're singing Psalm 115,

  2. the Sing Psalms version, page 152 of the psalm books. We're going to sing from verse 1 to verse

  3. 9, and the tune is Tiverton. Lord, not to us, O not to us, to your name be the praise, because

  4. your love and faithfulness endure, O Lord, always. Why do the nations question us? Where is their God,

  5. they say? Our God inhabits heaven high, and over all holds sway. We'll sing from verse 1 to 9

  6. to God's praise, and we stand to sing.

  7. Lord, not to us, O not to us, to your name be the praise.

  8. Because your love and faithfulness endure, O Lord, always.

  9. Why do the nations question us? Where is their God, they say?

  10. Our God inhabits heaven high, and over all holds sway.

  11. Their gold and silver images are crafted carefully, but they have mouths which cannot speak,

  12. and eyes which cannot see.

  13. Their noses have no sense of smell, their ears can hear no sound.

  14. They have no feeling in their hands, nor can they walk around.

  15. Although these idols do have throats, no word can they proclaim.

  16. Their makers and their worshippers will all become like them.

  17. O house of Israel, please, your trust upon the Lord alone.

  18. He is the mighty help and shield of all who are his own.

  19. Let's come to God in prayer. Let us pray.

  20. Lord, our God, our Father in heaven, we continue to worship you this day, thankful that you have given us your day,

  21. given us this day set aside for that very purpose, to come away from the activities of the rest of the week,

  22. to come away from the busyness of life in so many ways,

  23. and to come and draw near to you in this way, to come and still ourselves in your presence,

  24. to come and offer up our praise and worship to you.

  25. And we thank you that your word has reminded us, even as we've sung,

  26. that we come not for our glory, but for yours.

  27. And we come seeking your face, seeking your presence in our midst,

  28. thankful that you are the God who is above all other gods,

  29. that you are not one who keeps silent or one who cannot speak.

  30. You are not one who does not have ears to hear or eyes to see.

  31. For as your word reminds us, you hear your people as they pray.

  32. You speak to us and call us to yourself.

  33. And we thank you that you are our God and that we can call upon your name,

  34. that you have brought us from darkness to light to sea,

  35. that there is only salvation found in one God and one Savior, Christ Jesus.

  36. And we thank you that we come in his name, the name above every other name.

  37. And we pray, Lord, that you will help us to put away all other idols

  38. that may be in our hearts or in our lives,

  39. all the things that come between through worship of you.

  40. For we know that although we speak and read of idols as they were in days of long ago in these psalms

  41. or in the word that we will be reading,

  42. we know that there are still idols in our hearts today.

  43. There are still things that we put first before you,

  44. things that need to be removed before we can truly come and worship you aright.

  45. But we thank you that just as you helped your people of old,

  46. how you spoke to them and reminded them

  47. and challenged them in the midst of idolatry that surrounded them,

  48. that so your word challenges us today,

  49. that it speaks to us about the idolatry that surrounds us,

  50. but it reminds us of the God who is able to do

  51. and able to do abundantly more than we ask or even imagine.

  52. And so, Lord, help us to set our trust in you,

  53. that we will indeed place our trust upon the Lord alone,

  54. as the psalm reminds us,

  55. for he is the mighty help and shield of all who are his own.

  56. And so we thank you that we have these words in our hearts this night,

  57. that even as we come in prayer just now,

  58. that we have that confidence and assurance

  59. that you are the help and shield to all your people,

  60. that near and far you surround your people,

  61. that you are with them, Lord,

  62. that you hear those who rejoice in gladness and joy this day,

  63. but that you hear too those who are full of sorrow and sadness,

  64. those who mourn and grieve,

  65. those who need you in special ways.

  66. And we thank you that you are the God who is there to be called upon,

  67. that you are the one who is near,

  68. that you are the one who is able to help,

  69. that you are the one who gives grace and that all-sufficient grace,

  70. grace that is made perfect even in weakness.

  71. And so we thank you for your grace that extends to your people.

  72. And may it be so, Lord,

  73. for those even of our own number who need you in particular ways,

  74. those who are grieving and mourning,

  75. those who are unwell,

  76. going through periods of ill health,

  77. those who are recovering from operations,

  78. those who are laid aside because of other reasons of the body, mind, and soul.

  79. We know the challenges that we face in these days are many,

  80. but we thank you that we have one who has overcome,

  81. one who knows every frailty and weakness,

  82. one who knows every challenge and temptation that we face in this world,

  83. one who was tempted himself and yet without sin.

  84. And we thank you that even in our sin,

  85. as we fall short,

  86. that we have one who we can come to,

  87. one who is able to forgive,

  88. one who bore our sins on the tree,

  89. one who died in our place,

  90. that we might have life through him.

  91. And so help us to hear your word as it speaks to us anew and afresh this evening.

  92. Help us that we will hear what you're saying

  93. and consider what you are saying

  94. and even commit to what we hear,

  95. that we are to serve the Lord,

  96. that we are a people who are called to you to that end,

  97. that we would put our trust in you

  98. and serve you with all that we are and all that we have.

  99. We thank you for every blessing that you extend to us,

  100. for every perfect gift is from above as your word reminds us.

  101. And we have so much to be thankful for,

  102. for your goodness to us and blessings that are new day by day.

  103. And we do pray that in the days ahead as we go on in this week,

  104. that you will guide our every step

  105. and help us along the way to honour you in all that we do,

  106. whether it be in school or in our workplaces,

  107. in our homes, in our communities.

  108. Whatever we are doing, we would do it as unto the Lord,

  109. remembering that we are your witnesses,

  110. that we are your people,

  111. and that to those around us who know you not,

  112. to those who are still in darkness,

  113. that we would be the light of this world,

  114. shining your glory through us.

  115. We pray, Lord, that you will help us to be your witnesses,

  116. to be people who live aright

  117. and are people who do good unto others as well.

  118. And we thank you for every opportunity that we have

  119. to serve you in every way,

  120. from working with our young ones,

  121. as we think even of the week ahead

  122. with the toddler group tomorrow

  123. and the explorers later in the week,

  124. the YF tonight,

  125. and the youth fellowship meeting

  126. in the coming week as well.

  127. We thank you, Lord, for every way

  128. that we are able to help and serve in these ways.

  129. And we pray that as a congregation here,

  130. as your people,

  131. you will strengthen our number

  132. and strengthen our faith,

  133. that you will help us to go on in your strength,

  134. seeking blessing and goodness for us as a people,

  135. but also for the people around us too,

  136. that we would compel others to come in,

  137. that we would remember the good news

  138. of the gospel that we have,

  139. that it is not something to be contained

  140. to these walls or to our own lives,

  141. to our hearts,

  142. but that your word and your message

  143. is a public message,

  144. one that speaks to all around us

  145. and the one that we all need to hear

  146. and to hear afresh and to share with others.

  147. So, Lord, may you enthuse us in our hearts.

  148. May you convict us,

  149. even in our own witness for you,

  150. that we would ask,

  151. oh Lord,

  152. what can we do for you?

  153. For we know that you have done so much for us.

  154. And we pray, Lord,

  155. that you will build up your kingdom

  156. here in our community

  157. and throughout our islands,

  158. throughout our nation,

  159. throughout the world,

  160. that your kingdom

  161. and glory would come in power.

  162. We thank you for your church

  163. that is far and wide

  164. throughout this world.

  165. And we thank you

  166. for the witness of the gospel.

  167. We thank you that it extends

  168. to the north and south,

  169. the east and west.

  170. It is so far reaching.

  171. The gospel bears witness

  172. to all ends of the earth.

  173. And we thank you

  174. that your gospel is bearing fruit,

  175. that there are lands and peoples

  176. who are being reached with the gospel,

  177. many even for the first time,

  178. who may be hearing it

  179. and marveling at it,

  180. that you have sent your word to them,

  181. that they have heard of a Savior

  182. so precious, so lovely.

  183. And we pray, Lord,

  184. that as your word goes out,

  185. it will be blessed by you.

  186. It will be mighty and powerful

  187. to save from every tribe

  188. and nation throughout this world,

  189. from leaders on high, Lord,

  190. that they would come

  191. to know you as their Lord

  192. and as their King,

  193. to serve you as servants

  194. to you as their true Master.

  195. We pray that even for our own nation,

  196. Lord, that we would see

  197. a turning in our land,

  198. that we would see a turning to you,

  199. a turning to faith

  200. and your word and truth,

  201. and that we'll be led by it.

  202. We pray, Lord,

  203. for your goodness

  204. then over us as a people.

  205. We pray for your mercy

  206. to be upon us.

  207. We pray that you will cleanse us

  208. from all our sins,

  209. and we commit all into your care,

  210. even for the days ahead.

  211. For the wake and funeral

  212. of Professor McLeod,

  213. we commit that to you.

  214. We commit the family once again,

  215. and friends,

  216. to your care and keeping.

  217. May you bless in the midst of grief.

  218. May your words bring comfort

  219. and convict us all, Lord,

  220. of our need of you.

  221. Thankful for all that we have heard

  222. over many years

  223. of the glory of Christ.

  224. We pray that Christ will be glorified

  225. even in these days ahead as well.

  226. Remember the WFM meeting this Friday as well.

  227. Bless that and be with them there

  228. on our communion weekend as well

  229. as we look forward to it.

  230. Be with us in all these things,

  231. and may you encourage us

  232. and build us up,

  233. and may you come

  234. in a day of your power.

  235. So hear our prayers.

  236. Continue with us.

  237. Continue to bless your word

  238. and the singing of your praise.

  239. The one who leads us in it, Lord,

  240. be with him and help us all

  241. to sing to your glory

  242. with all our hearts.

  243. So we thank you, Lord,

  244. for your goodness anew each day.

  245. We thank you for the hope

  246. and assurance of forgiveness of sin

  247. as we ask all these things

  248. in Jesus' name.

  249. Amen.

  250. Again, sing to God's praise

  251. this time in Psalm 15.

  252. Again, in the Sing Psalms.

  253. Psalm 15, in the Sing Psalms,

  254. we'll sing the whole of this psalm,

  255. page 16 of the psalm book.

  256. Psalm 15.

  257. Lord, who may stay within your tent,

  258. your sacred dwelling place,

  259. and who upon your holy hill

  260. may live before your face.

  261. Whoever walks a blameless path,

  262. who acts in righteousness,

  263. and who will always,

  264. from the heart,

  265. sincerely truth express.

  266. We'll sing from verse 1 to 5,

  267. the tune of Free Church,

  268. and we stand to sing.

  269. Lord, who may stay within your tent,

  270. your sacred dwelling place,

  271. and who upon your holy hill,

  272. may live before your face.

  273. Whoever walks a blameless path,

  274. who acts in righteousness,

  275. and who will always,

  276. from the heart,

  277. sincerely truth express.

  278. He has no spark on anyone,

  279. nor does his neighbor roam.

  280. He has no spark within his heart,

  281. or stander on his tongue.

  282. He honors those who fear the Lord,

  283. the worthless heal his spies.

  284. He keeps the oath which he has sworn,

  285. however high the price.

  286. He lends his money,

  287. he hath no charge,

  288. no pride can he endure.

  289. Those who meet him in life like this,

  290. will always stand secure.

  291. We'll turn to read the Word of God now.

  292. In the Old Testament,

  293. in the book of Joshua,

  294. we're going to read in chapter 24.

  295. Joshua chapter 24,

    Joshua 24 chapter mention

  296. the last chapter of the book of Joshua.

  297. We're going to take up our reading at verse 11,

  298. and read down to verse 28.

  299. Just to set the scene at the beginning of this chapter,

  300. you see Joshua has gathered all the tribes of Israel together.

  301. He's gathered them to show them,

  302. and explain to them what the Lord has done for them,

  303. how he has brought them out of Egypt and into the promised land,

  304. and how God has been good to them.

  305. And in the midst of this,

  306. the people have their hearts pulled in different directions,

  307. just like their fathers in Egypt had been pulled towards worshipping the gods of Egypt.

  308. Now they're going into the land, the promised land.

  309. There's this challenge that they may turn to the gods of that nation.

  310. And the great challenge is to them,

  311. who will they serve?

  312. So up to verse 11,

  313. he's explaining to them what the Lord has brought them to.

  314. And we take up our reading at verse 11.

  315. Verse 11.

  316. And you went over the Jordan and came to Jericho,

  317. and the leaders of Jericho fought against you,

  318. and also the Amorites, the Perisites, the Canaanites, the Hittites,

  319. the Gergesites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

  320. And I gave them into your hand,

  321. and I sent the hornet before you,

  322. which drove them out before you,

  323. the two kings of the Amorites.

  324. It was not by your sword or by your bow.

  325. I gave you a land on which you had not laboured,

  326. and cities that you had not built,

  327. and you dwell in them.

  328. You eat the fruit of the vineyards and olive orchards that you did not plant.

  329. Now, therefore, fear the Lord,

  330. and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness.

  331. Put away the gods of your fathers,

  332. that your fathers served beyond the river and in Egypt,

  333. and serve the Lord.

  334. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord,

  335. choose this day whom you will serve,

  336. whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the river

  337. or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell.

  338. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

  339. Then the people answered,

  340. Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods.

  341. For it is the Lord our God who brought us and our fathers up from the land of Egypt,

  342. out of the house of slavery,

  343. and who did those great signs in our sight,

  344. and preserved us in all the way that we went,

  345. and among all the peoples through whom we passed.

  346. And the Lord drove out before us all the peoples,

  347. the Amorites who lived in the land.

  348. Therefore, we also will serve the Lord,

  349. for he is our God.

  350. But Joshua said to the people,

  351. You are not able to serve the Lord,

  352. for he is a holy God.

  353. He is a jealous God.

  354. He will not forgive your transgressions or your sins.

  355. If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods,

  356. then he will turn and do you harm,

  357. and consume you after having done you good.

  358. And the people said to Joshua,

  359. No, but we will serve the Lord.

  360. Then Joshua said to the people,

  361. You are witnesses against yourselves,

  362. that you have chosen the Lord to serve him.

  363. And they said, We are witnesses.

  364. He said, Then put away the foreign gods that are among you,

  365. and incline your heart to the Lord,

  366. the God of Israel.

  367. And the people said to Joshua,

  368. The Lord our God we will serve,

  369. and his voice we will obey.

  370. So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day,

  371. and put in place statutes and rules for them at Shechem.

  372. And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God.

  373. And he took a large stone and set it up there under the terebinth

  374. that was by the sanctuary of the Lord.

  375. And Joshua said to all the people,

  376. Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us,

  377. for it has heard all the words of the Lord that he spoke to us.

  378. Therefore, it shall be a witness against you,

  379. lest you deal falsely with your God.

  380. So Joshua sent the people away,

  381. every man to his inheritance.

  382. Amen.

  383. And may God bless that reading from his word.

  384. And again, sing to God's praise before we turn back to that passage.

  385. Singing in Psalm 50 in the Scottish Psalter,

  386. the first version of the Psalm,

  387. page 276 of the Psalm book.

  388. Psalm 50, and that verse one.

  389. The mighty God the Lord hath spoken and did call,

  390. the earth from rising of the sun to where he hath his fall,

  391. from out of Sion Hill which of excellency and beauty,

  392. their perfection is God's shine it gloriously.

  393. We'll sing from verse one to five to God's praise.

  394. The mighty God the Lord hath spoken and did call,

  395. the earth from rising of the sun to where he hath his fall.

  396. From out of Sion Hill which of excellency and beauty the perfection is God's shine it gloriously.

  397. Our God shall surely come,

  398. His silence shall not be,

  399. Before him fire shall with great storms

  400. Shall round about to me,

  401. Unto the heavens clear,

  402. He from above shall fall,

  403. And to the earth like my sanity,

  404. May judge his people all.

  405. We turn back to our reading in Joshua chapter 24.

    Joshua 24 chapter mention

  406. We can read again at verse 14.

  407. Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness.

  408. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the river and in Egypt and serve the Lord.

  409. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord,

  410. Choose this day whom you will serve,

  411. Whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the river,

  412. Or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell.

  413. But as for me and my house,

  414. We will serve the Lord.

  415. These will be familiar words to many of you.

  416. I'm sure the words are often found on plaques,

  417. Put pictures that found in homes throughout our island.

  418. A very common verse to see.

  419. As for me and my house,

  420. We will serve the Lord.

  421. But maybe what we don't often notice is the midst,

  422. What was in the midst of that statement,

  423. What the challenge was that Joshua was putting out to the people.

  424. And what the setting was when they were being pulled in so many different directions.

  425. But here is Joshua when he gathers the children of Israel together.

  426. They've come into the promised land.

  427. They're being seeing all these good things that are around them.

  428. They're looking back on what the Lord has brought them through.

  429. And looking ahead to what the Lord has in store for them.

  430. And they're being reminded once again of the need to be faithful to the Lord God and Him alone.

  431. And it's one of these occasions where,

  432. As we see a people gathered together.

  433. So a day that they would remember for the rest of their lives, I'm sure.

  434. And a day and a statement that was made that resonates right through the Old Testament into the New Testament

  435. And stays with us to this day.

  436. Because it's such a powerful challenge.

  437. Choose this day whom you will serve.

  438. And then the challenge is Joshua put it,

  439. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

  440. It would have been something that would have spoken about for a long time afterwards.

  441. We hear this statement sometimes,

  442. Where were you when?

  443. And then it's followed by something important that happened in life.

  444. Where were you when?

  445. For example, if you look back maybe many years in your life to the time when John F. Kennedy was shot.

  446. Some of you maybe recall where you were when you heard that news.

  447. It was something dramatic.

  448. Something powerful had happened.

  449. And very often when that is the case, we remember where we were when we heard that news.

  450. And over the years perhaps there have been times and moments when we've had that kind of statement asked of us,

  451. Where were you when?

  452. For example, maybe when Princess Diana was killed in a car crash.

  453. Where were you when you heard that?

  454. Where were you when you heard the Queen had passed away?

  455. Where were you when you heard as a nation and as a people,

  456. We were going into lockdown.

  457. We had to stay at home because of Covid.

  458. We often remember those important things.

  459. And we remember maybe exactly where we were when we heard or saw these things taking place.

  460. And they stay with us in some ways.

  461. But as time goes on, we can maybe often forget.

  462. And the longer time goes on, the more we have to think about these kinds of things.

  463. Where were you when?

  464. And you have to think a bit more about it.

  465. And what's interesting is when we come to the scriptures, it's often the case as well.

  466. The people here, where were we when they heard this?

  467. They were gathered at Shechem.

  468. They were there hearing Joshua putting this challenge before them.

  469. But then as you go through the Old Testament, you find these people forgetting what they heard,

  470. forgetting what had happened, forgetting the commitment that they'd made and moving on in their own lives.

  471. It doesn't have the same impact.

  472. But it shouldn't be the case with the Word of God.

  473. We should never allow it to become something that we could just forget about.

  474. Where were you when you heard the minister preaching on that passage?

  475. Maybe when you were first converted, where were you when the Word of God spoke powerfully to you at that moment?

  476. And you can remember the church, the very seat you were maybe sitting in when the Lord opened your heart.

  477. But now maybe it's not having the same impact.

  478. Maybe now it's just not seeming as powerful as it did just then.

  479. But that's often the case.

  480. But we often have to be challenged and convicted in what we are believing and what we're hearing week by week, month by month, year by year.

  481. To be reminded that it's still the same word that is so powerful.

  482. To not allow us to be distracted by other false gods as is the setting here.

  483. The idols, the things that come between us and God.

  484. And take away the joy of our worship.

  485. Rob us of that joy.

  486. Just to be reminded what God has done for us.

  487. And what we owe to Him.

  488. A right service.

  489. A true commitment to Him.

  490. And that's what is good about going into a week when we will have a communion time in our own midst.

  491. It's always a powerful reminder to us.

  492. We hear the Word of God week by week,

  493. but then as we come to the Lord's Supper,

  494. it seems to just add something to it.

  495. It reminds us as we do that in remembrance of Him,

  496. as we have the bread and the wine before us,

  497. as we come to remember what the Lord has done.

  498. It reminds us of what He has done for us

  499. and what our commitment to Him should be as well.

  500. And in some ways, Joshua is reminding the people of that here as well.

  501. It's a significant moment.

  502. He's called the nation, the people to Him,

  503. reminding them of what they have been brought out,

  504. of this bondage and slavery in Egypt,

  505. what they have been brought to in the promised land,

  506. and the fruits that are plenteous around them,

  507. as you see in verse 13.

  508. But all that the Lord has provided for them.

  509. They are being reminded of this.

  510. And some will listen and others won't.

  511. That's the reality of it.

  512. It may be the reality even here this evening.

  513. Some will listen, some will not.

  514. But our prayer is that God will speak.

  515. God's Word will resonate in our hearts,

  516. that it will remind us of what He has done for us.

  517. Maybe even God's Word is speaking to you today.

  518. It is challenging you.

  519. Whether it's to recommit,

  520. that maybe you've grown cold in your commitment to the Lord,

  521. to come back to Him with a full sense of commitment.

  522. Perhaps it's the fact you've not committed in the first place.

  523. You're being challenged to commit.

  524. But that's what the Word of God is saying to us.

  525. It's asking of us,

  526. are we committed to serving the Lord?

  527. Joshua's words in verse 15 are like a summary for us.

  528. In all that we move on in life with,

  529. all the changes all around us,

  530. all the distractions that come our way,

  531. are we listening to God?

  532. Are we committed to Him?

  533. These words, they still speak to us today.

  534. Verse 15,

  535. In this message to the people that Joshua is giving,

  536. he's giving them three things

  537. that I want us to hear this evening as well.

  538. He's asking them, first of all,

  539. to consider,

  540. to consider all that the Lord has done for them.

  541. He's then giving them a comparison.

  542. He's comparing the gods that are around them,

  543. whether it's the gods of their fathers back in Egypt

  544. or the gods of the Amorites in whose land they now dwell,

  545. to compare these gods to the Lord

  546. and what comparison is there.

  547. And then thirdly,

  548. as we'll see,

  549. he's challenging them to commit.

  550. So we've got consider,

  551. compare,

  552. and commit.

  553. Well, the first thing we want to look at here is consider.

  554. And really from verse 1 through to verse 13,

  555. Joshua is there asking them to consider

  556. all the things that they have seen

  557. that the Lord has done,

  558. how He has brought them out of the land of Egypt,

  559. how He has brought them through the wilderness,

  560. how He has brought them into the promised land.

  561. There are all these things that they have seen of God

  562. and are being asked by Joshua,

  563. consider what God has done for you,

  564. how He has led you to this point,

  565. how He has provided for you all along the way.

  566. Read through the beginning of chapter 24

  567. in your own time,

  568. maybe even this evening,

  569. how He brought them out of Egypt,

  570. how He brought them through so many battles,

  571. victorious,

  572. without even having to lift a sword or a bow.

  573. He won the battle for them.

  574. And how He brought them into cities

  575. and with vineyards and orchards,

  576. that the cities they didn't build,

  577. the orchards they didn't plant,

  578. everything was provided by God.

  579. In Psalm 116,

  580. the psalmist there speaks of how his soul finds rest

  581. because God has been good to him.

  582. Consider all that the Lord has done,

  583. how He heard His prayer,

  584. how He was with them,

  585. and he comes to the conclusion,

  586. his soul finds rest

  587. because God has been good to him.

  588. Do you have that rest in your soul this evening?

  589. Because God has been good to you.

  590. Consider what the Lord has done.

  591. He shows us here what He has done

  592. for the children of Israel.

  593. But what about ourselves?

  594. As you consider your own life,

  595. as you look back over it,

  596. as you see all your journey through this world,

  597. consider the things that the Lord has done.

  598. There will be very personal things for yourself.

  599. There will be times when you felt

  600. maybe you couldn't go on in your own strength,

  601. but He gave you strength.

  602. He gave you courage when you were afraid.

  603. He gave you boldness when you were full of fear.

  604. Consider the things that the Lord has done for you.

  605. That's what Joshua is challenging the people,

  606. ourselves today with.

  607. Consider what the Lord has done

  608. and the cost that is in serving Him.

  609. Look at the way he says

  610. to the positive response of the people

  611. when you go down to verse 19.

  612. In verse 16,

  613. the people answered,

  614. Far be it from us

  615. that we should forsake the Lord

  616. to serve other gods.

  617. For it is the Lord our God

  618. who brought us and our fathers

  619. up from the land of Egypt,

  620. out of the house of slavery.

  621. He did all these things.

  622. And they say at the end of verse 18,

  623. We will serve the Lord,

  624. for He is our God.

  625. But look at the response of Joshua to that.

  626. But Joshua said to the people,

  627. You are not able to serve the Lord,

  628. for He is a holy God.

  629. He is a jealous God.

  630. He will not forgive your transgressions

  631. and your sins

  632. if you forsake the Lord

  633. and serve foreign gods.

  634. What's he saying here?

  635. Consider what you're saying.

  636. Consider the commitment

  637. you are making here.

  638. It cannot be just mere words.

  639. You cannot pay God platitudes

  640. in that way with just mere words.

  641. He's calling them here

  642. to consider seriously.

  643. To seriously consider

  644. what is their commitment to the Lord.

  645. Is it mere words,

  646. just a gesture to the Lord?

  647. Oh yes, I'll serve the Lord.

  648. But their heart's not in it.

  649. Or their hearts are divided,

  650. as is the case here.

  651. They're divided between

  652. serving the Lord

  653. and serving other gods.

  654. He's saying there is a cost to this.

  655. Consider that.

  656. Jesus and His disciples

  657. in Matthew 16, verse 24,

    Matthew 16:24

  658. Jesus reminds the disciples

  659. of the cost of following Jesus.

  660. He says,

  661. If anyone would come after me,

  662. let him deny himself,

  663. take up his cross,

  664. and follow me.

  665. For whoever would save his life

  666. will lose it.

  667. But whoever loses his life

  668. for my sake will find it.

  669. This is similar to what

  670. Joshua was saying here too.

  671. There is a cost

  672. as you consider what it means

  673. to following the Lord.

  674. But you see,

  675. all along the way,

  676. how the Lord provides,

  677. how He gives,

  678. how He helps.

  679. And that is above all

  680. what we consider.

  681. The Lord will not fail us.

  682. So as we commit ourselves

  683. to the Lord,

  684. He will be with us.

  685. There's a poem called,

  686. Hitherto the Lord Has Blessed Us.

  687. And it goes like this,

  688. When our soul is much discouraged

  689. by the roughness of the way

  690. And the cross we have to carry

  691. Seemeth heavier every day.

  692. When some cloud that overshadows

  693. Hides our Father's face from you,

  694. O'tis well then to remember

  695. He has blessed us hitherto.

  696. Looking back the long years over,

  697. What a varied path and yet

  698. All the way His hand has led us,

  699. Placed each hindrance we have met,

  700. Given to us the pleasant places,

  701. Cheered us all the journey through,

  702. Passing through the deepest waters,

  703. He has blessed us hitherto.

  704. Surely then our hearts should trust,

  705. Though the clouds be dark overhead,

  706. We've a friend that draweth closer,

  707. When all other friends have fled,

  708. When our pilgrimage is over,

  709. And the gates we're sweeping through,

  710. We shall see with clearer vision

  711. How He's blessed us hitherto.

  712. It's a reminder to us of the Lord

  713. Being with us all along the way,

  714. Especially through those times of challenge,

  715. Those times of difficulty.

  716. He will give us a clearer vision,

  717. A vision of Himself.

  718. And that's what Joshua is asking the people here

  719. To consider.

  720. As he's saying when he says,

  721. Choose this day whom you will serve.

  722. It's to consider where you are.

  723. To consider what has been done for you.

  724. And especially now as we know in light of Jesus Christ,

  725. And what He has done for us at the cross.

  726. To consider what that means.

  727. To consider the cost

  728. For the forgiveness of our sins.

  729. To consider the cost

  730. Of fully serving Him.

  731. As he is challenging the people here,

  732. There's a sense of it being,

  733. There will be things that you will have to let go.

  734. There will be things that you will have to put away from yourself

  735. To fully serve God.

  736. Consider your life.

  737. Consider all of these things.

  738. And see if there are things that need to change.

  739. And that's true for ourselves.

  740. There may be things in our lives we have to put away.

  741. Things that are coming between us and God.

  742. They will have to go.

  743. But consider the cost

  744. If they don't.

  745. Consider,

  746. Even as Joshua goes on to say here,

  747. If you will not put away the gods,

  748. He says in verse 20,

  749. If you forsake the Lord

  750. And serve foreign gods,

  751. Then He will turn away

  752. And do you harm and consume you

  753. After having done you good.

  754. There's a serious challenge there.

  755. He will consume you.

  756. Even after He has done you good.

  757. If you forsake Him.

  758. So consider all of these things.

  759. The second thing we see here is

  760. He's asking us to compare.

  761. To compare God the Lord

  762. And to compare the other gods

  763. That they've had in their lives.

  764. So Joshua gives them some advice.

  765. And in many ways,

  766. It maybe seems like strange advice to us.

  767. The problem is there for us in verse 14.

  768. He says,

  769. Now therefore fear the Lord

  770. And serve Him in sincerity and faithfulness.

  771. Put away the gods that your fathers served

  772. Beyond the river and in Egypt

  773. And serve the Lord.

  774. But then He says in verse 15,

  775. If it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord,

  776. Choose this day whom you will serve.

  777. Whether the gods of your fathers

  778. Served in the region beyond the river

  779. Or the gods of the Amorites

  780. In whose land you dwell.

  781. He puts this choice before them.

  782. And initially it maybe seems like a strange choice to us.

  783. Either choose to serve,

  784. If it seems evil to serve the Lord,

  785. Then choose whom you will serve.

  786. Either your fathers' gods

  787. Or the gods of the Amorites.

  788. But they're both false gods.

  789. So what is the point of what he's making here?

  790. The people were beginning to see the God of the Amorites.

  791. And they were beginning to see an appeal

  792. To go to these gods.

  793. Not quite fully forsaking the Lord.

  794. They were going to try and keep Him in their lives.

  795. But it's almost like they were just trying to be fully covered.

  796. We'll have God the Lord on one side.

  797. But maybe we'll need the gods of the Amorites.

  798. Or perhaps even the gods of our fathers

  799. That they had back in Egypt.

  800. We'll leave every option opened.

  801. Believing that this would help them

  802. To be almost fully covered.

  803. That is why he says here,

  804. Serving the Lord seems evil to you.

  805. It seems evil in the sense that

  806. They're putting all their eggs in one basket.

  807. If they only rely on one God,

  808. Well, that would be stupid, would it not?

  809. When there's all these other gods

  810. Who may be the answer for us as well.

  811. Being accountable to one God

  812. Just doesn't seem the right way to go.

  813. And we say, well, how stupid is that?

  814. That sounds just crazy to us.

  815. And we say it should sound crazy to them as well.

  816. And yet how easy it is for our own hearts

  817. To be pulled in different directions.

  818. How easy it is for ourselves

  819. To have idols that will come into our lives.

  820. Things that we will rely on and trust on

  821. And depend on

  822. That we think we can help ourselves with.

  823. When all our trust is to be in God.

  824. The point he is making is this.

  825. The choices are just as bad

  826. And just as absurd

  827. And of no use to you.

  828. He's saying if you will not serve God

  829. You must at least serve another God

  830. And this is your choice.

  831. The God of your fathers

  832. Or the God of the Amorites.

  833. But neither can help you.

  834. Neither can save you.

  835. Just like we sang in the psalm earlier

  836. About the idols.

  837. They have no eyes that they can see.

  838. They have no mouths that they cannot speak.

  839. They have no ears that they can hear.

  840. But God the Lord does.

  841. What Joshua is saying is

  842. It's nonsense to think that these gods

  843. Can do anything for you.

  844. Remember what the Lord has done for you.

  845. How he has brought you

  846. Out of the land of Egypt

  847. Away from these gods

  848. And into the land of the Amorites

  849. And protected you from them and their gods.

  850. There is no comparison.

  851. Nothing compares to God the Lord.

  852. And that's for ourselves too.

  853. When you compare God the Lord in your life.

  854. Is there anything else that you can bring in

  855. That's going to add any benefit to you.

  856. Is there anything else that you can do

  857. That's going to make it better for you.

  858. No.

  859. Because only God the Lord can help.

  860. So he's saying

  861. Don't turn back.

  862. Don't go back to the gods of your fathers.

  863. Don't turn to the God of the Amorites.

  864. He's saying

  865. Make sure that you are fully committed.

  866. Because if you're divided

  867. He'll consume you.

  868. And again he reminds them

  869. Later on in verse 23.

  870. It's almost like he's saying

  871. You are

  872. Well in verse 22

  873. You are witnesses against yourselves

  874. That you have chosen the Lord

  875. To serve him.

  876. Then put away the foreign gods

  877. That are among you

  878. And incline your heart to the Lord

  879. The God of Israel.

  880. You see they had them.

  881. They had the gods

  882. The foreign gods

  883. Because he's saying

  884. Put them away.

  885. It wasn't even that the danger was there

  886. That they might bring them in.

  887. They were already there

  888. But he's saying

  889. Put them away.

  890. Because nothing compares

  891. To God the Lord.

  892. The Lord our God

  893. We will serve

  894. The people said.

  895. And so Joshua

  896. Made a covenant.

  897. That is how serious

  898. It was.

  899. A full commitment

  900. To the Lord.

  901. Because there is no one

  902. Nothing

  903. That compares

  904. To God the Lord.

  905. And when we know

  906. Christ Jesus

  907. When we truly know him

  908. The one who saves us

  909. From our sins

  910. There is nothing

  911. That compares.

  912. Nothing

  913. Compares to it.

  914. They thought

  915. They would be

  916. Fully covered

  917. By bringing in

  918. All these other gods.

  919. Fully comprehensive

  920. In insurance terms.

  921. They weren't even

  922. Third party.

  923. Third party.

  924. Because it was a scam.

  925. It was a fraud

  926. To think

  927. That these gods

  928. Can do anything for them.

  929. And yet that is

  930. What the world

  931. Seeks to do to us.

  932. To pull us away

  933. From God.

  934. But it's a fraud.

  935. It's a scam.

  936. Because only God

  937. The Lord

  938. Can save us.

  939. And so then

  940. Thirdly and finally

  941. We see here

  942. Joshua is calling them

  943. To commit.

  944. He is calling them

  945. To commit.

  946. When he says

  947. Put away the gods

  948. Of your father

  949. Serve beyond the river

  950. And in Egypt

  951. And serve the Lord.

  952. And if it is evil

  953. In your eyes

  954. To serve the Lord

  955. Choose this day

  956. Whom you will serve.

  957. Choose this day.

  958. But then he makes

  959. This statement.

  960. He says

  961. But as for me

  962. And my house

  963. We will serve

  964. The Lord.

  965. There is this

  966. Commitment.

  967. God the Lord

  968. Is a mighty God

  969. Who saves.

  970. He is the one

  971. Who is to be feared.

  972. He is the God

  973. Who is gracious

  974. And concerned

  975. For his people.

  976. And having looked

  977. At other gods

  978. And how they compare

  979. There is no contrast.

  980. He says

  981. As for me

  982. And my house

  983. We will serve

  984. The Lord.

  985. Isn't that a bold

  986. And courageous statement?

  987. And isn't that

  988. What we all need

  989. To be like?

  990. It doesn't matter

  991. What others

  992. Are saying

  993. Or what the rest

  994. Think.

  995. How the world

  996. Says

  997. Where is

  998. Your God?

  999. We can say

  1000. Our God

  1001. Is in the heavens

  1002. High

  1003. He is ruling

  1004. We can rest

  1005. And trust

  1006. In him

  1007. Even when the world

  1008. Laughs

  1009. And mocks us

  1010. For it

  1011. But our God

  1012. Is the Lord

  1013. And that is

  1014. The statement

  1015. That Joshua

  1016. Is making

  1017. Have you

  1018. Made that statement?

  1019. Have you made

  1020. That commitment

  1021. Yourself?

  1022. As for me

  1023. And my house

  1024. We will serve

  1025. The Lord.

  1026. His commitment

  1027. Is because

  1028. He knows

  1029. The God

  1030. Who is committed

  1031. To him.

  1032. And when it comes

  1033. To commitment

  1034. How committed

  1035. Are you?

  1036. I'll share

  1037. What sounds

  1038. Like a silly story

  1039. But it has

  1040. A very

  1041. Serious

  1042. Application

  1043. For us

  1044. It's about

  1045. Our commitment

  1046. And the story

  1047. Was about

  1048. A pig

  1049. And a chicken

  1050. A pig

  1051. And a chicken

  1052. Who were walking

  1053. Down the road

  1054. And the chicken

  1055. Said to the pig

  1056. Hey pig

  1057. I was thinking

  1058. We should open

  1059. A restaurant

  1060. And pig replies

  1061. Well maybe

  1062. What will we

  1063. Call it?

  1064. And the chicken

  1065. Responds

  1066. How about

  1067. Bacon and eggs?

  1068. The pig

  1069. He thinks

  1070. For a moment

  1071. And says

  1072. No way

  1073. For that

  1074. For you

  1075. That only means

  1076. A contribution

  1077. But for me

  1078. That means

  1079. A total

  1080. Commitment

  1081. It's a silly

  1082. Story in many

  1083. Ways

  1084. But the application

  1085. Of it is this

  1086. Are we merely

  1087. A people

  1088. Who are like

  1089. The chicken

  1090. Just a contribution

  1091. To the Lord

  1092. Or are we

  1093. Like the pig

  1094. That it means

  1095. Full commitment

  1096. For us

  1097. We are to be

  1098. Fully committed

  1099. Jesus experienced

  1100. The same things

  1101. With his own

  1102. Disciples

  1103. Many followed

  1104. Jesus when he

  1105. Was doing miracles

  1106. And all kinds

  1107. Of things

  1108. All kinds

  1109. Of teaching

  1110. They were hearing

  1111. And seeing

  1112. Great things

  1113. But then it

  1114. Became too

  1115. Hard

  1116. And many

  1117. Of his

  1118. Disciples

  1119. Turned back

  1120. It says in

  1121. John 6

    John 6:66

  1122. Verse 66

  1123. After this

  1124. Many of his

  1125. Disciples

  1126. Turned back

  1127. And no longer

  1128. Walked with him

  1129. So Jesus said

  1130. To the twelve

  1131. Do you want

  1132. To go away

  1133. As well

  1134. Simon Peter

  1135. Answered him

  1136. Lord

  1137. To whom

  1138. Shall we go

  1139. You have the

  1140. Words of eternal

  1141. Life

  1142. And we have

  1143. Believed and

  1144. Have come to

  1145. Know

  1146. That you are

  1147. The holy

  1148. One

  1149. Of God

  1150. Are we

  1151. Committed

  1152. Like Simon

  1153. Peter's

  1154. Response

  1155. To whom

  1156. Else

  1157. Can we go

  1158. You alone

  1159. Have the words

  1160. Of eternal

  1161. Life

  1162. There is no

  1163. One who

  1164. Compares

  1165. To God

  1166. Our Lord

  1167. Do you want

  1168. To go away

  1169. Do you want

  1170. To just turn

  1171. Away

  1172. From him

  1173. The way

  1174. May be hard

  1175. As we follow

  1176. Him

  1177. But it is

  1178. The only way

  1179. It may not

  1180. Be an easy

  1181. Way

  1182. But it's

  1183. The only way

  1184. To eternal

  1185. Life

  1186. And that's

  1187. What Joshua

  1188. Is challenging

  1189. Us

  1190. Choose

  1191. This day

  1192. Whom

  1193. You will

  1194. Serve

  1195. A missionary

  1196. Society once

  1197. Wrote to David

  1198. Livingston

  1199. The famous

  1200. Missionary

  1201. And they

  1202. Asked him

  1203. Have you

  1204. Found a

  1205. Good road

  1206. To where

  1207. You are

  1208. If so

  1209. We want

  1210. To know

  1211. How to

  1212. Send other

  1213. Men to

  1214. Join you

  1215. David

  1216. Livingston

  1217. Wrote back

  1218. And said

  1219. This

  1220. If you

  1221. Have men

  1222. Who will

  1223. Come only

  1224. If they

  1225. Know

  1226. There is

  1227. A good

  1228. Road

  1229. I don't

  1230. Want them

  1231. I want

  1232. Men

  1233. Who will

  1234. Come

  1235. If there

  1236. Is no

  1237. Road

  1238. At all

  1239. He was

  1240. Looking for

  1241. A people

  1242. Who were

  1243. Fully committed

  1244. To serving

  1245. The Lord

  1246. Not having

  1247. The easy

  1248. Way to

  1249. Go on

  1250. Not having

  1251. Everything

  1252. Done for

  1253. Them

  1254. But those

  1255. Who were

  1256. Willing

  1257. To serve

  1258. The Lord

  1259. With all

  1260. Their

  1261. Heart

  1262. There is

  1263. No easy

  1264. Option

  1265. In serving

  1266. God

  1267. But there

  1268. Is every

  1269. Blessing

  1270. In it

  1271. To know

  1272. God

  1273. With us

  1274. And to

  1275. Know him

  1276. On our

  1277. Side

  1278. To know

  1279. The victory

  1280. That we

  1281. Have in

  1282. Christ

  1283. The hope

  1284. Of eternal

  1285. Life

  1286. No other

  1287. God compares

  1288. No other

  1289. God

  1290. Can offer

  1291. Us

  1292. The blessings

  1293. That are

  1294. Found

  1295. In God

  1296. The Lord

  1297. And so

  1298. The challenge

  1299. To us

  1300. All

  1301. This evening

  1302. Is to

  1303. Choose

  1304. This day

  1305. Whom

  1306. You will

  1307. Serve

  1308. May it

  1309. Be our

  1310. Response

  1311. Is the

  1312. Same as

  1313. Joshua

  1314. That we

  1315. Would say

  1316. With boldness

  1317. And with

  1318. Gladness

  1319. But as

  1320. For me

  1321. And my

  1322. House

  1323. We will

  1324. Serve

  1325. The Lord

  1326. Let us

  1327. Pray

  1328. Our

  1329. Father in

  1330. Heaven

  1331. We do

  1332. Thank you

  1333. For the

  1334. Verses in

  1335. Your word

  1336. That we

  1337. Maybe know

  1338. So well

  1339. But we

  1340. Thank you

  1341. Lord

  1342. How they

  1343. Both

  1344. Convince us

  1345. And also

  1346. Challenge us

  1347. They remind

  1348. Us that

  1349. We as a

  1350. People

  1351. Have maybe

  1352. In the past

  1353. Made a

  1354. Commitment

  1355. To you

  1356. A commitment

  1357. That at

  1358. Times has

  1359. Grown

  1360. Cold

  1361. A commitment

  1362. That is being

  1363. Distracted

  1364. By other

  1365. Things

  1366. In this

  1367. World

  1368. Or perhaps

  1369. Even

  1370. We are

  1371. At a

  1372. Point

  1373. Where we

  1374. Have not

  1375. Committed

  1376. But we

  1377. Thank you

  1378. That your

  1379. Word shows

  1380. Us that

  1381. There is

  1382. No God

  1383. Who compares

  1384. To you

  1385. You have

  1386. Done all

  1387. For us

  1388. You have

  1389. Provided for

  1390. Us every

  1391. Step along

  1392. The way

  1393. And you

  1394. Have been

  1395. A God

  1396. Who has

  1397. Been good

  1398. To us

  1399. But even

  1400. As your

  1401. Word reminds

  1402. Us this

  1403. Evening

  1404. If we

  1405. Forsake you

  1406. You are

  1407. The God

  1408. Who is

  1409. Able to

  1410. Consume

  1411. Us

  1412. But we

  1413. Thank you

  1414. To that

  1415. There is

  1416. Mercy

  1417. That there

  1418. Is

  1419. Mercy

  1420. As we

  1421. Commit

  1422. To you

  1423. And as

  1424. We seek

  1425. To serve

  1426. You

  1427. With all

  1428. Our heart

  1429. That we

  1430. Would know

  1431. Your blessing

  1432. And your

  1433. Favor

  1434. Your goodness

  1435. And your

  1436. Mercy

  1437. So help

  1438. Help us

  1439. Lord

  1440. That we

  1441. Would commit

  1442. To you

  1443. And serve

  1444. You

  1445. As the

  1446. Only true

  1447. And living

  1448. God

  1449. As we

  1450. Ask it

  1451. All

  1452. In Jesus

  1453. Name

  1454. Amen

  1455. We're going

  1456. To conclude

  1457. By singing

  1458. To God's

  1459. Praise

  1460. In Psalm

  1461. 9

  1462. In the

  1463. Scottish

  1464. Psalter

  1465. Page

  1466. 209

  1467. Of the

  1468. Psalm

  1469. Books

  1470. Psalm

  1471. 9

  1472. At verse

  1473. 9

  1474. Sing

  1475. Three

  1476. Stanzas

  1477. To verse

  1478. 11

  1479. God

  1480. Also

  1481. Will a

  1482. Refuge

  1483. Be

  1484. For those

  1485. That are

  1486. Oppressed

  1487. A refuge

  1488. Will he

  1489. Be in

  1490. Times

  1491. Of

  1492. Trouble

  1493. To

  1494. Distress

  1495. We'll

  1496. Sing

  1497. From

  1498. Verse

  1499. 9

  1500. To

  1501. 11

  1502. To

  1503. God's

  1504. Praise

  1505. In the

  1506. Tunis

  1507. St.

  1508. Andrew

  1509. God

  1510. Also

  1511. So

  1512. Will

  1513. Our

  1514. Refuge

  1515. Be

  1516. For

  1517. Those

  1518. That

  1519. Are

  1520. Oppressed

  1521. Our

  1522. Refuge

  1523. Will

  1524. Leave

  1525. In

  1526. Time

  1527. Of

  1528. Throttle

  1529. To

  1530. His

  1531. Rest

  1532. And

  1533. Thee

  1534. That

  1535. Know

  1536. Thy

  1537. Name

  1538. In

  1539. Thee

  1540. Their

  1541. Confidence

  1542. Will

  1543. Place

  1544. For

  1545. Thou

  1546. Has

  1547. All

  1548. For

  1549. Forsaken

  1550. There

  1551. That

  1552. Truly

  1553. Seek

  1554. Thy

  1555. Name

  1556. O

  1557. Sing

  1558. Ye

  1559. Praises

  1560. To

  1561. The

  1562. Lord

  1563. that

  1564. dwells

  1565. In

  1566. Zion

  1567. Hill

  1568. And

  1569. All

  1570. The

  1571. Nations

  1572. прекрас

  1573. and

  1574. His

  1575. Now

  1576. I'll

  1577. go to

  1578. the main

  1579. door after

  1580. the benediction

1581. now may grace mercy and peace from God

1582. Father Son and Holy Spirit rest upon

1583. and abide with us all now and forevermore

  1584. Amen

  1585. Amen
