  1. Psalms, Psalm 84, and I'm just going to bring out some points from the whole stretch of the psalm.

  2. How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts.

  3. Now it's obvious as you read through the psalm that it's one of those pilgrimage psalms.

  4. It's one of those psalms that speaks about a journey to Zion, a journey to the temple,

  5. because as we'll see, he is away from the temple.

  6. The psalmist is lamenting the fact that he's not in God's house or near God's house

  7. and wants to know again of the benefit of being in the Lord's house.

  8. It doesn't tell us where he is or how long he's been away,

  9. but he does obviously have a longing to be back in the courts of the Lord, as he says in verse 2.

  10. And you can see too that three times, at least through the psalm, you have the word blessed.

  11. And in some ways you could say that blessed, as you find in verses 4 and 5 and 12,

  12. the psalm is in a sense a meditation on the meaning of blessed

  13. and how the whole concept of being blessed applies to God's people.

  14. One of the beautiful things about the psalm, and it is such a comforting thought,

  15. is that blessedness is not affected by whatever conditions we may find ourselves in.

  16. Because the psalm takes us through different circumstances and different conditions,

  17. even the fact that he's there and then in a place of longing,

  18. and where he talks to later, as we'll see, to the valley of Baker,

  19. the difficulties of the journey, the challenges of the journey,

  20. and then reaching journey's end, throughout all of these varied experiences,

  21. his blessedness remains in place.

  22. God has blessed him. Nothing can alter that.

  23. And all the way through, he's carrying the blessedness that belongs to him,

  24. of which he speaks through each and all of these circumstances.

  25. It remains intact for the whole of his journey.

  26. And isn't that a comforting and reassuring thought for yourself tonight as a Christian?

  27. That however things change in your experience or in the conditions of your life from day to day,

  28. none of that affects your blessedness.

  29. You are as blessed after God has blessed you.

  30. You are as blessed in times of adversity and temptation and difficulty

  31. as you are in times of comfort and joy.

  32. The blessedness is not conditional upon the outward circumstances.

  33. The blessedness continues right through every instance of life.

  34. And that's, of course, what God demonstrated way back in the Old Testament days there,

  35. further back in the days of Balaam coming to try and curse the Lord's people in the book of Numbers,

    Numbers 23 chapter mention

  36. chapters 23, 24, as you read through that,

  37. that Balak, the king of Moab, had hired him to come and curse these people of God.

  38. He took him up to a mountain, as you remember, and sought to curse them from there.

  39. And God came and put a word in his mouth.

  40. And instead of uttering curses against the people of God,

  41. he pronounced some of the most beautiful blessings from God upon these people.

  42. And in pronouncing that, one of the things he said more than once was,

  43. how can I curse whom God has not cursed?

  44. And how can I bless whom God has not blessed?

  45. If tonight your life is blessed, and as a Christian your life is blessed,

  46. nothing is going to be able to curse you.

  47. Nothing is going to alter that blessedness that God has actually laid upon you or taken you into.

  48. Now, there are three points, just briefly, that we can divide the psalm into.

  49. First of all, verses 1 to 4, and also verse 10,

  50. you find that there is what you might call the element of pining.

  51. He's pining for the house of the Lord.

  52. He has a longing in his heart.

  53. Secondly, verses 5 to 7 speaks about pilgrimage.

  54. And then, finally, verses 11 to 12 speak about plenty,

  55. the plenteousness that God has for his people,

  56. as the one who is their son and their shield,

  57. bestowing favour and honour.

  58. No good thing does he withhold the plenteousness of goodness,

  59. as God showers them with good things.

  60. So, pining, pilgrimage, and plenty.

  61. And the first verses, 1 to 4, here he is saying,

  62. how lovely is your dwelling place.

  63. He's thinking about the dwelling place of God, the temple of God.

  64. And then he says, my soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the Lord.

  65. And one of the things that strikes you all the way through that,

  66. especially in the beginning, how lovely is your dwelling place.

  67. As he pines for the house of God, his mind is caught up with the beauty of that.

  68. And with the beauty of the house of God, because of God's own beauty.

  69. Because that's what you find right throughout,

  70. where God makes his presence, that makes a place or a person beautiful.

  71. You find that in Psalm 27, for example.

  72. When you think of how the same reference there is to the temple or the house of God,

  73. and the psalmist there in 27,

  74. the Lord is my light and my salvation.

  75. This is David this time, how that gives him encouragement and strength.

  76. But then in verse 4,

  77. one thing I have asked of the Lord, that will I seek after,

  78. that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.

  79. Why? To gaze upon the beauty of the Lord, to inquire in his temple.

  80. See what comes through to us from the word of God.

  81. From the study of the word of God, from our meditation on the word of God.

  82. What comes through to us as God impresses us with his word in our hearts

  83. is the beauty of the Lord.

  84. Every single thing that has beauty about it in this world.

  85. And let's face it, this is still a world that's marred by sin,

  86. waiting for the day of its deliverance at the end of the world

  87. and the reconstitution into the new heavens and the new earth,

  88. where righteousness dwells.

  89. Nevertheless, all around you, you have beauty.

  90. You have beauty in terms of your own human being.

  91. The beauty of your mind.

  92. The beauty in which God has put you together with the different faculties that you have.

  93. Where does that beauty come from?

  94. Where does the beauty of salvation come from?

  95. Where does the beauty of redemption in Christ come from?

  96. Where does the beauty of your adoption come from?

  97. The fact that you've been made and brought into the family of God

  98. and have become a child of God.

  99. The beauty of that position and that relationship with God is from him.

  100. Everything is derived that is beautiful is derived from his beauty.

  101. God places his own beauty.

  102. The beauty of his holiness.

  103. The beauty of his life.

  104. The life that he gives to us.

  105. He impresses us and puts that upon us.

  106. And so you find the same in verse 10.

  107. For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere.

  108. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God

  109. than dwell in the tents of wickedness.

  110. In other words, he's really saying the least position in the house of God

  111. is of infinitely more beauty than the highest position in the world.

  112. To dwell in the tents of wickedness.

  113. To have that dwelling place instead of the dwelling place

  114. of being in the house of the Lord.

  115. There is no comparison.

  116. Tonight you are in a beautiful situation.

  117. Of course, the temple of the Lord, house of the Lord,

  118. is more than this building.

  119. The concept of God's dwelling place moves as we come into the New Testament.

  120. It being now the church of God, the people of God.

  121. That's where he dwells.

  122. That's where he's placed his name.

  123. That's the place he makes beautiful for his own presence

  124. and by his own presence.

  125. And you know, as we come to another Lord's day

  126. and another Lord's supper, God willing.

  127. One of the things that we ought to seek from God

  128. as we come once again to take communion

  129. is that the Lord would bless his word to us

  130. and by his spirit enable us once again

  131. just to dwell upon the beauty of the Lord.

  132. To dwell upon what these elements of bread and of wine represent.

  133. That this is the beauty of Christ.

  134. Christ's own death, which is such a cursed death.

  135. And the ugliness of death.

  136. And the ugliness of bearing the punishment of God.

  137. And yet, nevertheless, it is, in the other sense,

  138. the most beautiful place in the world.

  139. Because that is where the beauty of righteousness shines.

  140. The beauty of God's love as it penetrates the darkness of Calvary.

  141. And as you look at those things in emblem in the Lord's supper,

  142. it should be for us a conveying of that sense of beauty.

  143. How beautiful is our salvation.

  144. How beautiful is our saviour.

  145. How beautiful is that relationship to him

  146. in which we have communion with God.

  147. How beautiful is the prospect in the hope that he's given us

  148. of eternal life with him in heaven.

  149. Every single aspect of our relationship with God

  150. has beauty in some way attached to it.

  151. And we can say how lovely, how beautiful is your dwelling place, O Lord.

  152. And you know that word lovely, it is beautiful.

  153. It does mean beautiful.

  154. But it also conveys with it a sense of beloved, of being valued.

  155. How beloved is your dwelling place?

  156. How valued is your dwelling place?

  157. How precious to me is the fact that you dwell, Lord, in my heart.

  158. That you've chosen this as your dwelling place.

  159. It's something that I prize, something that I value.

  160. Of course, that carries you into what the Bible many ways presents as,

  161. the lament of God's people when they're not as aware as they once were of being near to God.

  162. When they lament the fact that they have caused perhaps some distance between themselves and God

  163. by disobedience, by something other that they know has caused that God's face has,

  164. to an extent, been hidden from them.

  165. They don't have the same comfort they used to have.

  166. They don't have the same sense of nearness to God.

  167. And they can say with the psalmist, Lord, my soul longs, faints.

  168. I want this back.

  169. I want to have that relationship restored to the way that I enjoyed you as I used to.

  170. But, you know, tonight, if you are in that situation where you say,

  171. I'm not as close to the Lord as I used to be.

  172. I'm not as close to the Lord as I've been recently.

  173. And I lament the fact that that's the case.

  174. And I'd like to have it restored.

  175. If that is the case, don't let that keep you back from the Lord's table.

  176. Don't let it keep you from coming to take communion.

  177. Because, after all, what could be better for you than to use a means of grace like the Lord's Supper,

  178. by which the Lord channels grace into our lives?

  179. What could be better for you than to come and avail yourself once again of it,

  180. asking that the Lord would restore your soul,

  181. would actually bring back to you that sense of his nearness,

  182. if you've lost that to some extent.

  183. So, this is his desire.

  184. The soul is longing.

  185. He's crying out for the courts of the Lord.

  186. And these words in verse 2,

  187. my heart and flesh sing for joy.

  188. I think the old translation in that instance is probably better.

  189. It's crying out to the living God.

  190. And it's not necessarily devoid of joy,

  191. but the prominent element, I think,

  192. in his longing and his pining for the house of God,

  193. he has that pain in his heart.

  194. And he is crying out for the Lord.

  195. This is really serious to him.

  196. This is something he really wants to know,

  197. and God's answer to God answering his prayer and his longing.

  198. My soul longs, yes, even faints for the courts of the Lord.

  199. She is envious at the sparrow and the swallow,

  200. who have found a place to nest at your altars, O Lord of hosts.

  201. He's really saying,

  202. Lord, here I am, and I'm conscious I'm not at your house.

  203. I'm not where I would desire to be.

  204. At the moment, I'm distanced from your altars,

  205. from your temple,

  206. and I envy these very little birds that have a place in your temple.

  207. If only I were as one of them to actually be at your altars,

  208. O Lord of hosts, my King and my God.

  209. And so that's the blessed state he speaks of.

  210. Blessed are those, verse 4,

  211. who dwell in your house,

  212. ever singing your praise.

  213. Well, is this not our desire tonight?

  214. However much we've known the Lord in the past up to this moment,

  215. whether we've been in this pilgrimage a long time or a short time,

  216. that's not really the issue.

  217. The issue is that tonight we want to see God spiritually with our longing eyes.

  218. We want to come to this communion on the Lord's day,

  219. praying that the Lord would reveal himself to us through his word

  220. and through the elements of the Lord's Supper.

  221. And that once again, we would gaze upon his beauty.

  222. And that he would reinforce to our longing souls

  223. the fact that he is our God,

  224. that we are his people,

  225. that he's taken us as his people,

  226. that we are, in other words, blessed.

  227. Blessed by him.

  228. Because he speaks of him here as,

  229. O Lord of hosts, my King and my God.

  230. By that he shows that this Lord, this God, has no rivals.

  231. None can take his place.

  232. None can dethrone him.

  233. More than that,

  234. the Psalms very often are polemic.

  235. That's to say they're directed against idolatry

  236. and against the kind of religions

  237. that Israel had around her at all times.

  238. And so in the Psalms, you'll find so much of an emphasis on God,

  239. their God being the true God,

  240. the only God, the living God,

  241. the creator God, the sovereign God,

  242. the saving God, the covenant God.

  243. All of that is a polemic against

  244. those idols and these idolaters around them.

  245. And really these gods in Psalm 115,

  246. they're dead.

  247. They're made by human hands.

  248. They have certain shapes.

  249. They've even got human form.

  250. They have eyes.

  251. They have ears.

  252. They have mouths, but they can't hear.

  253. They can't speak.

  254. Because they're dead, worthless idols.

  255. But your God is this God.

  256. And as this God is your God,

  257. so you'll love to have that made known

  258. to the world in which you live.

  259. And by coming to once again take communion,

  260. and even by being here tonight,

  261. you have demonstrated and you're demonstrating

  262. that this God is your God,

  263. that you're not living for the gods of this world.

  264. That whatever shape the gods of this world take,

  265. they are varied and they are many.

  266. As we heard in the Lord's Day from Kalmurda,

  267. if I remember rightly,

  268. that the idolatry of our age

  269. is not confined to things that people make with their hands.

  270. There's all kinds of ideologies and philosophies and lifestyles

  271. and many things related to that

  272. that are just idolatrous.

  273. Man worshipping himself and his own mind

  274. and his own so-called ability

  275. and putting God aside.

  276. But this is your God.

  277. Blessed are those whose God is this God.

  278. At your altar, O Lord of hosts,

  279. my King and my God.

  280. And isn't it marvellous

  281. how that little word, my,

  282. just clinches that argument for us, doesn't it?

  283. He's not just God.

  284. He's not just God in terms of being the King

  285. and the Sovereign Lord of the universe.

  286. The psalmist is here saying,

  287. I'm away from where I would long to be,

  288. where I'm longing to be back at.

  289. My soul is longing for the courts of the Lord.

  290. At your altar, my King and my God.

  291. Reminds you, doesn't it,

  292. of the great words you find in John's Gospel

  293. when Jesus came to reveal himself to Thomas?

  294. Thomas not having been there a week before

  295. when he revealed himself

  296. as the risen Christ to the disciples.

  297. And of course, he knew of Thomas' objection

  298. and the words that Thomas had spoken,

  299. even though Jesus wasn't physically present.

  300. We invited Thomas specifically.

  301. And what a marvellous thing that is as well,

  302. that the Lord would make the effort,

  303. if we can put it that way,

  304. and would take such concern

  305. to present himself to that one disciple

  306. who had been missing from the previous gathering,

  307. just to reveal himself to him this time.

  308. And after Thomas had come with conviction

  309. to realise who this was,

  310. that this was the risen Christ,

  311. how did he respond?

  312. My Lord and my God.

  313. My Lord and my God.

  314. What a great confession.

  315. One of the greatest confessions in the Bible,

  316. combining as it did

  317. the personal attachment of Thomas to Jesus

  318. and Jesus to him,

  319. but also Jesus himself being both Lord and God.

  320. So there's pining,

  321. pining for the house of the Lord,

  322. the presence of God,

  323. secondly,

  324. there's pilgrimage from verse five.

  325. Blessed are those whose strength is in you

  326. and whose heart are the highways to Zion.

  327. As they go through the valley of Beka,

  328. they make it a place of springs.

  329. The early rain also covers it with pools.

  330. They go from strength to strength.

  331. Each one appears before God in Zion.

  332. Now the journey to Zion,

  333. or back to the temple,

  334. wherever he was situated this time,

  335. was obviously going to be

  336. through difficult terrain,

  337. valley of Beka,

  338. generally is interpreted by commentators

  339. as a place of dryness.

  340. Difficult to be precise,

  341. but the meaning of the word Beka itself,

  342. but certainly it was a desert place,

  343. a place of dryness,

  344. very arid place,

  345. a place for which you needed strength

  346. to actually walk through it

  347. and come out the other side.

  348. And he's saying here

  349. that he requires that strength

  350. so that they will go

  351. and he will go from strength to strength

  352. with those who are traveling.

  353. It involves a tough journey.

  354. It's the journey of life.

  355. It's the journey on which you and I are set

  356. as pilgrims heading towards Zion

  357. because that road takes you,

  358. as you very well know,

  359. through difficult,

  360. challenging territory.

  361. You're going to meet with enemies

  362. that will frighten you.

  363. You're going to meet with failures

  364. on your own part and mine.

  365. You're going to meet with temptations

  366. to some of which you will yield to,

  367. and I too.

  368. There's so much you're going to meet with

  369. that really in themselves

  370. are designed to put you off,

  371. to make you turn back.

  372. You're going to meet with Satan,

  373. especially different forms

  374. and different ways

  375. in which he has access to our lives.

  376. So as to try and intimidate us,

  377. you're going to meet with the ways of the world,

  378. with the hostility of those enemies of Christ.

  379. So many ways in which the path,

  380. the pilgrimage,

  381. is a really testing one,

  382. one of difficulty for which you and I need,

  383. the strength that God gives.

  384. That's why he's saying in verse 5,

  385. blessed are those whose strength is in you.

  386. In other words, he's saying,

  387. blessed are those for whom you are the strength.

  388. You are the one who gives them

  389. the strength for the journey.

  390. And really that's very much in line

  391. with what the apostle wrote.

  392. You remember to the Corinthians

  393. in the second letter to the Corinthians

  394. where he spoke about the difficulties

  395. that he himself was facing.

  396. But then as he came to chapter 12,

  397. as you read it in chapter 12,

  398. the experiences he spoke of there,

  399. the thorn in the flesh that was given him,

  400. to buffet him,

  401. a messenger of Satan,

  402. to harass me,

  403. to keep me from being too elated.

  404. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this,

  405. that it should leave me.

  406. But he said to me,

  407. my grace is sufficient for you,

  408. for my power is made perfect in your weakness.

  409. Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly

  410. of my weaknesses,

  411. so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

  412. For the sake of Christ, then,

  413. I am content with weaknesses,

  414. insults, hardships, persecutions,

  415. and calamities.

  416. For when I am weak,

  417. then I am strong.

  418. He's saying that I am content.

  419. For the sake of Christ,

  420. I'm content with weaknesses,

  421. and so on.

  422. He knew that as he depended upon Christ,

  423. as he depended on the grace of God

  424. that was promised him,

  425. he knew that the strength he needed

  426. was given to him.

  427. The strength to actually meet those challenges

  428. that he speaks of in this chapter,

  429. in these verses.

  430. And the word he uses there for content.

  431. For the sake of Christ,

  432. I am content with weaknesses,

  433. insults.

  434. It's the very same word

  435. that's actually used

  436. for God's,

  437. the Father's words about Jesus.

  438. This is my beloved son

  439. in whom I am well pleased.

  440. That word in Greek for well pleased,

  441. content,

  442. is exactly the word

  443. that Paul uses there

  444. in 2 Corinthians chapter 12.

    2 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  445. I am well pleased to be like this.

  446. I am content that this is my lot,

  447. that I know whatever circumstances I have,

  448. my blessedness will not run out,

  449. and it will not be taken from me.

  450. My status will not change.

  451. The grace of God will not fail me.

  452. It is sufficient for me.

  453. Whatever we're afraid of,

  454. and we're afraid of many things,

  455. whatever we're afraid of

  456. must never deflect our minds

  457. and our conviction

  458. that the grace of God

  459. is not sufficient for us.

  460. Many people have fears

  461. about coming to meet with the elders,

  462. for example,

  463. to come to take communion

  464. for the first time.

  465. And however much we do try

  466. and emphasize and do again emphasize,

  467. this is not to be seen

  468. as a formidable challenge.

  469. It's not there to prove

  470. how much you don't know

  471. or do know.

  472. It's actually there to be

  473. very much a stepping stone,

  474. very much to do with

  475. an encouraging step

  476. for you to take

  477. in terms of

  478. coming to the Lord's table

  479. for the first time.

  480. In other words,

  481. the challenge of that,

  482. think of it in the words of Paul,

  483. I am therefore content.

  484. I am therefore pleased

  485. that there's such a thing for me

  486. that I can take this step,

  487. even if it's a challenge,

  488. because then the power of Christ

  489. will rest upon me

  490. and the grace that's promised me

  491. will be my experience.

  492. So he has the strength

  493. even in the times of testing,

  494. but notice how he's saying

  495. as they go through

  496. the valley of Beka,

  497. they make it a place of springs.

  498. And I think the imagery

  499. that you've got there

  500. is a very precious one.

  501. He's not saying

  502. as they go through

  503. the valley of Beka,

  504. the rain comes down.

  505. He does mention that

  506. in the end of verse 6,

  507. but the first thing he says here

  508. is they make it.

  509. These pilgrims

  510. make the valley of Beka.

  511. They make it a place of wells.

  512. In other words,

  513. they have to actually use means

  514. by which to dig up

  515. the water for themselves.

  516. The valley of Beka

  517. is arid on top.

  518. It's a desert.

  519. There's nothing to be seen

  520. on the surface,

  521. but when you dig down

  522. deep enough,

  523. you'll come across water

  524. and you can actually

  525. get a refreshing drink.

  526. That's the image

  527. that you've got here.

  528. And that image follows you

  529. into the Christian's experience

  530. as well.

  531. Because there are circumstances

  532. in your life,

  533. and if we can put it

  534. in the language of the psalm,

  535. you have to dig

  536. a blessing out of it.

  537. It takes effort

  538. on our part.

  539. We can't bless ourselves.

  540. We cannot earn

  541. the blessing of God,

  542. but God places us

  543. in situations

  544. of distress,

  545. sometimes of anguish,

  546. sometimes of

  547. whatever difficulties

  548. they may be.

  549. And he's saying to us

  550. from this psalm,

  551. however difficult it is,

  552. whatever kind of difficulty

  553. it is,

  554. you have to dig down.

  555. You have to search through it

  556. and find the hand of God

  557. and find the water

  558. that God has provided

  559. for his people

  560. throughout the journey.

  561. They make it

  562. a place of springs,

  563. a place of a well.

  564. So if you're facing

  565. tonight a specific

  566. difficulty,

  567. even if you find

  568. it's one that

  569. you may feel

  570. nobody else

  571. can actually

  572. help you with

  573. or understand,

  574. maybe different

  575. to what anybody

  576. else may be going

  577. through,

  578. here is the Lord

  579. encouraging you,

  580. dig into it

  581. in such a way

  582. as you pray

  583. to me,

  584. you pray for me,

  585. you pray that

  586. I will actually

  587. make myself

  588. known to you,

  589. that I will bless

  590. this to you,

  591. that you will find

  592. that it is in fact

  593. by my blessing

  594. and coming to see

  595. me in it

  596. a place of wells,

  597. a place of real

  598. blessing to your soul.

  599. And that's why

  600. he's saying here

  601. the early rain

  602. also covers it

  603. with pools,

  604. well that's

  605. in addition to

  606. needing,

  607. to blessing,

  608. to digging

  609. for the blessings,

  610. God graciously

  611. sometimes just comes

  612. with a shout

  613. of blessing

  614. even if you haven't

  615. done much digging

  616. at all

  617. because he's God

  618. and because he's

  619. kind.

  620. He comes with

  621. unexpected blessings.

  622. He showers

  623. down blessings

  624. upon us.

  625. And so

  626. verse 7,

  627. they go

  628. from strength

  629. to strength

  630. each one appears

  631. before God

  632. in Zion.

  633. And you have

  634. something quite

  635. wonderful again

  636. in this.

  637. You've got both

  638. an emphasis on

  639. the company

  640. of God's pilgrims

  641. and each

  642. individual

  643. appearing before

  644. God in Zion.

  645. And what a benefit

  646. it is for us,

  647. friends,

  648. especially when

  649. the testing

  650. comes to us

  651. and the going

  652. is tough

  653. and the pilgrimage

  654. really is through

  655. very difficult territory

  656. spiritually.

  657. What a blessing

  658. it is to know

  659. that you're not

  660. on your own,

  661. that you're part

  662. of a company,

  663. that you belong

  664. to a fellowship,

  665. that you're

  666. traveling together

  667. with others

  668. who are pilgrims

  669. on the same

  670. journey,

  671. who maybe

  672. have been

  673. through similar

  674. circumstances

  675. before and

  676. can help you

  677. through it,

  678. but even not,

  679. if not,

  680. they're there

  681. for your support.

  682. They go from

  683. strength to strength

  684. and as we dig

  685. for blessings,

  686. let's make sure

  687. that we're looking

  688. out for those

  689. that we can help

  690. and let's make sure

  691. that we're willing

  692. to receive

  693. the help we need

  694. whenever others

  695. offer it to us.

  696. We are there

  697. for each other.

  698. We are there

  699. as fellow pilgrims.

  700. We are there

  701. sharing the journey.

  702. We are there

  703. so that in

  704. sharing the journey

  705. we may go

  706. from strength

  707. to strength

  708. step by step,

  709. strengthening each other

  710. until we come

  711. to appear

  712. before God

  713. and sign

  714. until we reach home,

  715. until we reach

  716. the temple above,

  717. the heavenly Zion.

  718. But you notice

  719. how it's changed

  720. from they go

  721. to from strength

  722. to strength

  723. to each one

  724. appears before God

  725. and sign.

  726. None is left out.

  727. Now this life

  728. may for some Christians,

  729. many indeed be

  730. a very lonely journey.

  731. They may find

  732. difficulties

  733. sharing things

  734. with others.

  735. They know they belong

  736. to the company

  737. of God's people.

  738. It doesn't necessarily

  739. mean that it's easy

  740. for them to die

  741. divulge their needs

  742. to others

  743. or their thoughts.

  744. But whatever

  745. experiences we have

  746. and whatever the company

  747. needs to go through,

  748. each one appears.

  749. He's not going to leave you

  750. in the desert.

  751. He's not going to leave you

  752. in the valley of Baca.

  753. He's not going to take away

  754. his strength

  755. for the latter part

  756. of the journey

  757. or for the section

  758. or for the section

  759. you're going through

  760. just now.

  761. Each one

  762. appears before God

  763. in Zion.

  764. Be thankful tonight

  765. for that emphasis

  766. on individuality

  767. set in the context

  768. of the corporateness

  769. of God's people together.

  770. Because that's what we have

  771. to always hold on to.

  772. I'm not alone.

  773. And even though

  774. I'm part of a crowd,

  775. I'm not lost

  776. in the crowd.

  777. I belong to the company

  778. of those pilgrims

  779. that are traveling home.

  780. Pining,

  781. pilgrimage,

  782. and then plenty.

  783. Because from verse 11,

  784. he speaks here about

  785. the Lord God

  786. is a sun and shield.

  787. The Lord bestows

  788. favor and honor.

  789. No good thing

  790. does he withhold

  791. from those who walk

  792. uprightly.

  793. So it's really

  794. in these two verses

  795. what God is

  796. and what God does.

  797. He is a sun

  798. and he's a shield.

  799. He gives light

  800. and he gives protection

  801. at the same time.

  802. That's the God

  803. who takes his people

  804. through this pilgrimage

  805. until they appear

  806. in his presence.

  807. To counter

  808. all the fears

  809. that we may have.

  810. Here is God saying,

  811. if you need light,

  812. then I've got light

  813. for you.

  814. If you need strength,

  815. I've got the strength

  816. you need.

  817. If you need protection

  818. as a shield,

  819. I am your shield

  820. and I am your exceeding

  821. great reward,

  822. as he said to Abraham.

  823. I will look after you.

  824. I will protect you.

  825. I will be your defense.

  826. And also,

  827. he gives

  828. favor and honor

  829. the Lord bestows.

  830. And again,

  831. the old translation

  832. has,

  833. he bestows

  834. grace

  835. and glory.

  836. There's nothing wrong

  837. with putting it as

  838. favor and honor,

  839. but somehow,

  840. especially for those of us

  841. of an older disposition,

  842. perhaps we might prefer

  843. these words.

  844. He gives

  845. grace,

  846. which is,

  847. of course,

  848. favor and honor,

  849. which is really

  850. ultimately glory.

  851. Isn't it

  852. whichever translation

  853. we choose,

  854. it really amounts

  855. pretty much to the same thing.

  856. He gives grace

  857. and he gives glory.

  858. He gives you his favor.

  859. He bestows that upon you

  860. and he gives you

  861. his honor.

  862. He honors you.

  863. He gives you glory.

  864. That's really a description

  865. of a Christian.

  866. What am I as a Christian?

  867. What are you as a Christian?

  868. What are we together

  869. as Christians?

  870. We have people

  871. on whom God

  872. has bestowed

  873. grace and glory,

  874. favor and honor.

  875. That's our portion.

  876. And that's why

  877. when every Lord's

  878. supper opportunity

  879. comes around,

  880. we have to respond

  881. to the fact

  882. of what this is saying

  883. to us.

  884. The blessing,

  885. the blessed people,

  886. we have to respond

  887. by saying,

  888. well,

  889. how can I not go

  890. and take communion?

  891. When God

  892. is all of this

  893. to me,

  894. when this is the fact

  895. of what he has done

  896. and is doing,

  897. how can I possibly

  898. think of

  899. anything less

  900. than taking

  901. the cup

  902. and taking the bread

  903. and doing this

  904. in remembrance

  905. of him?

  906. Really similar

  907. isn't it?

  908. Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  909. and verse 28.

  910. It says there

  911. in verse 12

  912. of the psalm,

  913. O God of hosts,

  914. Lord of hosts,

  915. blessed is the one

  916. who trusts in you.

  917. As Romans 8, 28

  918. puts it,

  919. blessed indeed,

  920. where Romans says

  921. that as Paul saw

  922. the wonder

  923. of being in Christ,

  924. the wonder

  925. of the blessings

  926. of Christ,

  927. that all of the things

  928. that he had mentioned

  929. there actually

  930. in verse 28,

  931. just give me a minute

  932. to look it up,

  933. the surrounding verses

  934. as well,

  935. where he said

  936. that the spirit

  937. helping them

  938. in their infirmities

  939. and the calling

  940. of God,

  941. the justifying

  942. of God,

  943. what shall we then

  944. say to these things?

  945. If God is for us,

  946. who can be against us?

  947. And we know

  948. in verse 28,

  949. we know that

  950. for those

  951. who love God,

  952. all things

  953. work together

  954. for good.

  955. Just like

  956. the psalm has said,

  957. he will give

  958. grace

  959. grace

  960. and glory.

  961. No good thing

  962. will he withhold

  963. because

  964. all things

  965. work together

  966. for good

  967. to the Lord's people.

  968. May he bless

  969. these thoughts

  970. on his word.

  971. Let's

  972. sing in his praise

  973. in Psalm

  974. let's

  975. pinch enrage

  976. for good

  977. Schluss

  978. into

  979. the

  980. truth

  981. after

  982. you

  983. should

  984. tell

  985. he

  986. to

  987. UN

  988. do

  989. the

  990. us

  991. and
