  1. Our first item of worship is Psalm 65. We sing to his praise in Psalm 65, and that's on page 82.

  2. And Zion praise awaits you, Lord, to you our vows will pay. To you all people will come near,

  3. do you hear us when we pray? When we were overwhelmed by sins and guilt upon us lay,

  4. you pardoned all our trespasses and washed our guilt away. Psalm 65, these verses 1 to 5,

  5. the tune is done firmly to God's praise.

  6. Amen.

  7. In Zion praise awaits you, Lord, to you our vows will pay.

  8. To you all people will come near, you hear us when we pray.

  9. When we were overwhelmed by sins and guilt upon us lay, you pardoned all our trespasses and washed our guilt away.

  10. We are blessed, our love, to you to the rain, with a new force of grace.

  11. We're filled with blessings in your heart, in your most holy place.

  12. With awesome deeds of righteousness, you answered us, O God, our Savior, hope of earth's ease, and of the earth abroad.

  13. Amen.

  14. Once again, let's join together in prayer to God.

  15. O Lord, our God, our gracious and eternal God, we thank you again that we can gather here this

  16. evening as worshipers around your Word, and that we can engage in these aspects of worship

  17. that we are so familiar with. We pray, Lord, that you would keep us from a mere familiarity

  18. or a mere sense of routine. Give us, we pray, Lord, when we call upon your name that we may do so,

  19. conscious that we are speaking with the God of whom we have been singing,

  20. and conscious that you have reminded us in these words of your readiness to answer us.

  21. We ask, O Lord, that you would help us as we study your Word and as we come to sing your praises,

  22. that we will do so with a thinking heart, the mind ready to receive these aspects of your truth,

  23. and to use your Word as we sing your praise. We give thanks, Lord, tonight that we are reminded

  24. once again of your greatness, of your claim over the whole of your creation,

  25. for you are the God of the whole universe, the God who has reminded us that you uphold all things by

  26. the Word of your power, and that it is to you that all human beings are answerable ultimately.

  27. Help us, Lord, we pray, to come in that holy fear by which we would, with awe and reverence and love

  28. for you, fall down before you now in the quiet of our hearts, and come, Lord, to give ourselves anew to you

  29. in a willing service. We thank you that your Word has already guided us today

  30. to those issues to do with the death of our Lord Jesus Christ, to that which he accomplished

  31. by his death at Calvary. And we do give thanks, O Lord, for your presence with us, for the way in which

  32. you use both word and sacrament to edify your people. We pray that we may carry these things

  33. with us from this Lord's day, both then and now, so that they may indeed form in our minds throughout

  34. this coming week, the basis of our thoughts. We thank you, O Lord, for all the goodness we receive

  35. from you. Lord, we come before you each Lord's day at the beginning of each week, reflecting upon the

  36. many aspects of your goodness, and yet we confess that throughout each week we fail to take account

  37. properly and tellingly of these aspects of your goodness that meet us in our daily living.

  38. For your goodness extends to us not only in the gospel, but in the course of life that you provide

  39. us with so much that we are given to enjoy and benefit from throughout each day. And we thank you

  40. that you remember us with plenty for our bodily needs, that you remember us in such a favorable

  41. situation as you've placed us in, so that we have access to medical resources, access to good

  42. education, access to so many things down through the years, O Lord, that you have provided us with

  43. in your providence and kindness. And we give thanks for that, and we pray that these may continue with

  44. us. For by our own neglect, O Lord, it would be all too easy for you to withdraw them and to teach us

  45. of our dependability, of our dependence upon yourself and on your dependability as our God.

  46. We pray tonight, Lord, as we consider aspects of your Word anew, that you might draw us to yourself

  47. as we do so, and that we may be conscious that you are here. Lord, we remember Solomon's great

  48. declaration as the dedication of the temple took place, that the heavens of heavens could not contain

  49. you, much less this building that he had erected. And so it is, O Lord, with this building, this place of

  50. worship, this place we are so familiar with and so precious to us. We confess that it is but small,

  51. tiny in your own presence compared to your greatness. Yet we thank you that you're pleased

  52. at times to fill it with your presence, that you're pleased to use it in such a way as to gather us

  53. together so that we experience more of your blessing. We pray that you would enable us to speak and to

  54. hear in a way that we truly be aware that you are speaking to us, that you are giving us the ability

  55. to speak and to hear. We ask your blessing to be with us as a congregation following our communion this

  56. morning. We thank you, Lord, for every occasion when the death of the Lord is remembered by us,

  57. and when you enable us to gather in such a fashion. We pray for all today who were at your table.

  58. We ask that you would bless us as we seek your strengthening for that journey of life through

  59. which you take us. And we pray that you would strengthen us to be your own living and consistent

  60. disciples in the world. We pray that you would protect us and keep us, that you would direct our

  61. steps each day in the ways of your truth. We pray especially, Lord, for Anna, who was there at the

  62. table for the first time today. We pray for Anna, and we ask that you would bless her as she begins

  63. her life as a professing Christian. We thank you for her presence with us. We pray that you would

  64. encourage her, O Lord, as she has taken this step. We pray for any who may have been at your table today

  65. for the last time. We know not, Lord, what a day or a week or months may actually bring to us.

  66. We have already, Lord, come through years when things happened that we were not expectant of,

  67. and yet you brought us safely through, and you enabled us, Lord, to look to you. We pray that that

  68. will be the case in these days and weeks and months to come. We pray that you bless again our children,

  69. those who are witnesses of the sacrament today, and those who are not, or those who were at home.

  70. We pray that you bless them, bless those, and bless them as they receive the teaching of your word and

  71. those who teach them. We thank you, Lord, for every encouragement you give us with regard to our

  72. young people. Bless us in the fellowship again this evening. Help us, Lord, as we take an interest in

  73. the work of camps, that you would enable us, Lord, to do so prayerfully and meaningfully as we remember

  74. the young people that anticipate being at camps this coming summer. And we pray for those who have

  75. given of themselves to help with camps as leaders, those who are giving practical help as cooks,

  76. those who are helping with transport. In every way, Lord, those who help with the running of our camps.

  77. We thank you for the encouragement it gives us to see so many children and young people coming

  78. to attend the summer camps. We pray that they will return much blessed in their souls,

  79. and that you would encourage, oh, Lord, those who seek to teach them and to give them guidance

  80. during that time. We ask your blessing, Lord, to be with us in all the activities that are listed for

  81. this week in our bulletin. We pray that you would bless these, whether they be formal times of worship

  82. or fellowships or times when we meet with others informally. Bless everything that's done in your

  83. name, we pray, and help us as we seek to go on serving you as a congregation, that you would continue,

  84. Lord, to encourage us and to provide us with further evidence that you are blessing your word amongst us

  85. and that you are taking us as your people as we take you as our God. Bless the world in which we live.

  86. Lord, we are so conscious of so many different aspects of need in our own society and throughout

  87. the world. We pray, Lord, for those who are seeking to uphold your truth in different contexts

  88. in our own land, whether it be in our schools, other aspects of our community life.

  89. We pray that you would bless every effort made to show the love of God and the authority of God

  90. and the gospel of God in our society. We pray for those who rule over us in Parliament.

  91. We ask that you would bless them, and we pray that our prayer and our remembrance of them may not

  92. simply be a matter of form, but that in our hearts we will sincerely seek their good and seek for them

  93. the wisdom that you alone are able to impart. We pray that that may be their portion during such

  94. difficult times as we face. We pray tonight for those who are ill, those of our own number especially,

  95. and commend them to you again, as well as those who mourn the passing of loved ones who are always with

  96. us from week to week. Grant them your comfort. Grant them your upholding and your strengthening.

  97. And graciously bless throughout the world, O Lord, people in such diversity and sometimes in such great

  98. need. We pray tonight again for those facing the terror of war and terrorism of different kinds,

  99. those who are fearful for their lives as they declare their faith in the Lord, those who face such

  100. opposition for having turned to the Lord and left whatever religions or lack of religion they had.

  101. We ask, Lord, that you would be pleased to bless them and encourage them in the way.

  102. We pray too for those who have come to face the difficulties of disaster. We pray again for those

  103. in India who have lost loved ones in this terrible train crash. O Lord God, we commend them to you and to

  104. your grace and to your own compassion. And we pray that you would remember them from your throne on high

  105. and give to them the way with all that they need to deal with such a calamity. And so, Lord, we ask that

  106. you'd continue to bless us as we live out our lives in this world. And Lord, whatever we may think of

  107. ourselves, help us at all times to be concerned to present you to the world as a God who is faithful,

  108. a God who is just, a God who is loving and kind, but will by no means clear the guilty.

  109. Hear us, we pray, forgiving your sin for Jesus' sake. Amen.

  110. We'll sing again to God's praise this time, Psalm 63. Once again, let's sing Psalms in Psalm 63.

  111. Tune is Cresselius, verses 1-8. That's on page 80.

  112. So, verses 1-8.

  113. O God, you are my God alone. I seek your face with eagerness.

  114. My soul and body thirst for you in this dry, weary wilderness.

  115. Psalm 63, and verses 1-8.

  116. O God, you are my God alone. I seek your face with eagerness.

  117. My soul and body thirst for you in this dry, weary wilderness.

  118. I seek your face with eagerness.

  119. I seek your face with eagerness.

  120. I seek your face with eagerness.

  121. I seek your face with eagerness.

  122. I seek your face with eagerness.

  123. I seek your face with eagerness.

  124. I seek your face with eagerness.

  125. Upon my bed I lie away, and in my thoughts remember you.

  126. I meditated throughout the night, and he knew constant love in view.

  127. Because you are my help alone, in shadow of your wings I'll sing.

  128. You hold me up with your bright hand, to you, O God, my soul will gain.

  129. Amen.

  130. Son of David, have mercy on me.

  131. And Jesus stopped and commanded him to be brought to him.

  132. And when he came near, he asked him, What do you want me to do for you?

  133. He said, Lord, let me recover my sight.

  134. And Jesus said to him, Recover your sight.

  135. Your faith has made you well.

  136. And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him, glorifying God.

  137. And all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

  138. He entered Jericho and was passing through, and there was a man named Zacchaeus.

  139. He was a chief tax collector, and he was rich.

  140. And he was seeking to see who Jesus was.

  141. But on account of the crowd, he could not, because he was small of stature.

  142. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him,

  143. for he was about to pass that way.

  144. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him,

  145. Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.

  146. So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully.

  147. And when they saw it, they all grumbled,

  148. He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.

  149. And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord,

  150. Behold, Lord, half of my goods I give to the poor.

  151. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.

  152. Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house,

  153. since he also is a son of Abraham.

  154. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

  155. Amen. May God bless again a reading of his word.

  156. Once again, we'll praise him this time from Psalm 51.

  157. Psalm number 51 in the Scottish Psalter,

  158. and singing verses 6 to 10.

  159. And the tune is St. Kilda.

  160. Behold thou in the inward parts, with truth delighted art.

  161. In wisdom thou shalt make me know within the hidden part.

  162. Do thou with hyssop sprinkle me, I shall be cleansed so.

  163. Yea, wash thou me, and then I shall be whiter than the snow.

  164. Of gladness and of joyfulness make me to hear the voice,

  165. that so these very bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

  166. All mine iniquities blot out.

  167. Thy face hide from my sin.

  168. Create a clean heart.

  169. Lord, renew a right spirit.

  170. Me within.

  171. Singing these verses 6 to 10 on page 281,

  172. and the tune is St. Kilda.

  173. Behold thou in the inward parts.

  174. With truth delighted art.

  175. Behold thou in the inward parts, with truth delighted art.

  176. And wisdom thou shalt make me know within the hidden part.

  177. Do thou with hyssop.

  178. Do thou with hyssop.

  179. Hear ye may know within the inside.

  180. and of joyfulness

  181. make me to hear

  182. the voice

  183. that's all these

  184. very poems

  185. which thou

  186. hast broken

  187. Mary

  188. rejoice

  189. all my

  190. iniquities

  191. slaughter

  192. thy face

  193. I

  194. from my

  195. shame

  196. create

  197. a

  198. in

  199. our

  200. for

  201. we

  202. you

  203. arise

  204. let

  205. me

  206. with

  207. him

  208. now please turn with me to Luke chapter 19

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  209. Luke chapter 19 the first part of the chapter there that we read a minute ago

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  210. where we find the account here of change in the life of Zacchaeus

  211. a very well known Bible incident I'm sure to most of us but one of continuing interest

  212. as we look to ourselves and our relationship to the Lord

  213. well we're told here that Zacchaeus was small of stature he was a little man and I'm sure as would have been the case in most of these instances and still the case as a little man and he was obviously quite small he couldn't see over the crowd

  214. that he would have been

  215. Zacchaeus would have been the case in the case in the case in the case in the case in the case in the case of the Lord and Zacchaeus would have met with that sort of comment many times in the history in his own history in his own experience

  216. but we're told here not only was he small in stature

  217. but he was big in terms of

  218. his riches

  219. he was rich he had plenty

  220. of money

  221. he was a chief

  222. tax collector

  223. and Jericho

  224. was a very lucrative place for tax collectors especially for the chief tax collector

  225. because I'm sure you know that chief tax collectors especially

  226. not only could gather in the taxes that were set by the government of the time

  227. but they very very often extorted extra money

  228. from the people just to fill their own pockets

  229. and for many reasons but that especially was a reason why they were hated by the public

  230. because that's the kind of ruthless attitude they had to people's lives

  231. and to people's money

  232. they were there to just make a packet

  233. they were there to fill their own pockets to make themselves rich

  234. and undoubtedly

  235. Zacchaeus fell into that sort of thinking

  236. and practice in his own life

  237. because as we'll see after the change

  238. that had come on him

  239. was made obvious

  240. he said to the Lord

  241. if I've defrauded anyone of anything I restored it

  242. fourfold

  243. and you certainly get the impression from that

  244. that Zacchaeus knew very well

  245. that he had defrauded people previously

  246. and was now making restitution

  247. as something that followed on

  248. from the change in his life

  249. but however rich he was in monetary terms

  250. this was a day that made him rich beyond measure

  251. made him rich spiritually

  252. a day that he could look back upon and say

  253. that's the day that I came really to possess

  254. true and lasting treasure

  255. that's the day I came to know Jesus

  256. that's the day I met him

  257. that's the day he changed my life

  258. that's the day when I realized

  259. that all my riches

  260. were of no avail to me

  261. if I didn't have the treasure of eternal life

  262. and that's where he was made rich beyond measure

  263. through what happened to him

  264. on this occasion

  265. and I want to just take the fact

  266. that he was a little man

  267. small of stature

  268. and just use that in our headings tonight

  269. to just work our way through this passage

  270. and we'll look first of all

  271. at the little man's big effort

  272. the effort he went to

  273. in order to come to see Jesus for himself

  274. secondly the little man's big change

  275. because the change that came over him

  276. is obvious from the way that he then speaks

  277. about himself

  278. and the way that he now sees things

  279. compared to how he once lived

  280. the little man's big change

  281. and thirdly the little man's big heart

  282. because the change that Jesus brought about

  283. in his life

  284. meant that it opened his heart

  285. to remember the needs of others

  286. and instead of lining his pockets

  287. he was actually opening up his pockets

  288. and saying Lord

  289. here is what I give

  290. I give half of my goods to the poor

  291. and if I have defrauded anyone

  292. I restore it fourfold

  293. in other words

  294. he was going beyond

  295. the accepted level of restitution

  296. that was in society there at the time

  297. and he was saying

  298. yes I'm going beyond that

  299. I want to restore it fourfold

  300. not just twofold

  301. so these are the three points

  302. that we want to follow out briefly tonight

  303. the little man's big effort

  304. the little man's big change

  305. and the little man's big heart

  306. now the effort he made was

  307. very clear from the passage

  308. his interest in Jesus

  309. is itself of significance to us

  310. there was a man named Zacchaeus

  311. he was chief tax collector

  312. he was rich

  313. and he was seeking to see

  314. who Jesus was

  315. he had a certain curiosity about Jesus

  316. he'd heard about him no doubt

  317. he maybe had seen him

  318. or heard about his miracles

  319. or his teaching beforehand

  320. but for whatever reason

  321. he was keen to see him

  322. he was seeking to see

  323. who Jesus was

  324. maybe he had heard about him

  325. maybe he had heard some of the remarkable things

  326. that Jesus had done

  327. and that had quickened his interest

  328. and quickened his curiosity

  329. so when he heard that

  330. Jesus was on this journey

  331. and that he came through Jericho

  332. he actually made a point

  333. of going to see who he was

  334. despite the handicap

  335. of his littleness of stature

  336. and many people begin

  337. their spiritual journey

  338. from an interest in Jesus

  339. because Jesus evokes your interest

  340. you can hardly read the gospels

  341. especially

  342. without being taken up

  343. in some way or other

  344. by how remarkable this person is

  345. and was at the time

  346. when you actually read through the gospels

  347. and you begin to realize

  348. just what a unique person Jesus was then

  349. and is

  350. it surely piques your interest

  351. to actually find out more about him

  352. and to come to know him for yourself

  353. it certainly was for this man Zacchaeus

  354. he was seeking to see who he was

  355. so he went to a great effort

  356. to actually find a vantage point

  357. where he could see him

  358. and you see the description there

  359. that Luke gives is quite detailed

  360. he was too small to look over the crowd

  361. so what did he do

  362. he ran on the head

  363. and climbed up into a sycamore tree

  364. to see him

  365. for he was about to pass that way

  366. he made that sycamore tree

  367. his vantage point

  368. that he could see over the crowd then

  369. and see Jesus

  370. and see who he was

  371. and finally catch a glimpse

  372. if he had not before

  373. of this remarkable person

  374. and that was a considerable effort

  375. for a little man

  376. to actually make his way

  377. into a sycamore tree

  378. to see Jesus

  379. and he was not embarrassed

  380. to read

  381. to run on ahead

  382. of the crowd

  383. to climb up into this tree

  384. not necessarily

  385. the most dignified thing to do

  386. but that's what he did

  387. because he was determined

  388. to see this Jesus for himself

  389. and surely that

  390. impresses us

  391. with the question

  392. that we have to put to ourselves

  393. what sort of effort

  394. are we making to see Jesus

  395. because our vantage point

  396. you really might say

  397. is the gospel

  398. the tree

  399. if you like

  400. from which we see Jesus

  401. is the gospel

  402. and the accounts we have

  403. in the gospel

  404. about this Jesus

  405. that's our vantage point

  406. that's the point

  407. from which we look down

  408. and see Jesus

  409. if you like

  410. as he's described for us

  411. in the gospel

  412. in the Bible

  413. the point is tonight

  414. for you and for me

  415. how much of an effort

  416. how much of a concern

  417. was it on our part

  418. to come here tonight

  419. and to see Jesus

  420. for ourselves

  421. to see him spiritually

  422. I mean

  423. to see him in the gospel

  424. to see him passing by us

  425. in the gospel

  426. as it were

  427. has it been of such significance

  428. to us

  429. that we really

  430. like this man

  431. would go to every possible effort

  432. to see Jesus for ourselves

  433. or are we just here

  434. because it's something

  435. we're used to be doing

  436. we're used to doing

  437. something that we're familiar with

  438. something of a ritual for us

  439. something of a habit

  440. well it's a very good habit

  441. I don't want to decry that

  442. but are we not here

  443. making every effort

  444. to see the Lord

  445. and concerned above everything else

  446. to meet with Jesus

  447. to see him

  448. for ourselves

  449. are we happy

  450. tonight just to stay put

  451. where we are in our lives

  452. and not make an effort

  453. to use every means

  454. that God has given us

  455. and made available to us

  456. whether it's in the word preached

  457. or in the sacrament

  458. that we had this morning

  459. which are themselves

  460. as we say

  461. vantage points

  462. from which to see Jesus

  463. I'm not suggesting

  464. that it's by your effort

  465. or by my effort

  466. that we come to be saved

  467. that we somehow gain

  468. or build up a store

  469. of merit

  470. by which God is then

  471. obliged to bless us

  472. that's not what I'm saying

  473. but I'm saying

  474. that it's so important

  475. to know Jesus

  476. for yourself

  477. to actually see him

  478. with the eyes of your soul

  479. with the eyes of faith

  480. that's important

  481. to see him

  482. from the eyes of trust

  483. to see him

  484. from the vantage point

  485. of the gospel

  486. and say yes

  487. now I see him

  488. now I know who he is

  489. is that your burden

  490. is that your concern

  491. tonight

  492. to actually see Jesus

  493. for yourself

  494. Zacchaeus

  495. used this opportunity

  496. and despite

  497. the handicap he had

  498. he made every effort

  499. to overcome that

  500. in order to come

  501. to see Jesus

  502. for himself

  503. the little man's

  504. big effort

  505. secondly

  506. the little man's

  507. big change

  508. and the first thing

  509. you find in that

  510. is the way that

  511. he was addressed

  512. by Jesus

  513. and it's so significant

  514. that when Jesus

  515. came to the place

  516. he looked up

  517. and said

  518. Zacchaeus

  519. hurry and come down

  520. for I must

  521. I must stay

  522. at your house today

  523. it becomes obvious

  524. straight away

  525. as you read that

  526. that the Lord

  527. knew this

  528. this man

  529. and he knew his name

  530. and he knew all about him

  531. and he knew

  532. what was going to

  533. what was going to happen

  534. to him that day

  535. and he knew his situation

  536. and he was calling him

  537. to do something about it

  538. he gave him

  539. his individual attention

  540. and that's one of the most

  541. remarkable things

  542. about the Lord

  543. that through the gospel

  544. the Lord deals with us

  545. so personally

  546. so individually

  547. so much concern

  548. with our individual

  549. personal needs

  550. that it's as if

  551. nobody else exists

  552. in the world

  553. but ourselves

  554. because when Jesus

  555. speaks into your soul

  556. you're very conscious

  557. that he's focusing

  558. on you

  559. and he's focusing

  560. on you

  561. with an intent

  562. and a concern

  563. that really is all

  564. about your well-being

  565. it's not something

  566. in which he takes

  567. a passing interest

  568. it's not something

  569. that he does

  570. just because he thinks

  571. there's a need to do it

  572. he does it because

  573. his concern is

  574. to do you good

  575. to actually come

  576. and bless you

  577. and for you to come

  578. and receive him

  579. as this man did

  580. it's interesting isn't it

  581. the previous

  582. incident as well

  583. the blind beggar

  584. Bartimaeus

  585. we're told

  586. his name is elsewhere

  587. very similarly

  588. to Zacchaeus

  589. when Jesus came

  590. and when he was told

  591. that it was Jesus

  592. who was passing by

  593. he cried out

  594. Jesus son of David

  595. have mercy on me

  596. and then you find

  597. that Jesus

  598. stopped

  599. and commanded him

  600. to be brought to him

  601. and so

  602. he was brought to him

  603. and there's so much

  604. theology

  605. and so much

  606. spiritual importance

  607. attached to these words

  608. Jesus stopped

  609. he did the same

  610. here with Zacchaeus

  611. he looked up

  612. into the sycamore tree

  613. where Zacchaeus

  614. had placed himself

  615. in order to see Jesus

  616. and as soon as Jesus

  617. reached the spot

  618. he actually stopped

  619. and looked up

  620. into that tree

  621. and called Zacchaeus

  622. where he was

  623. aren't you amazed

  624. at these words

  625. aren't you amazed

  626. that the son of God

  627. would actually make

  628. the time

  629. to stop over

  630. a human life

  631. in order to do

  632. that life good

  633. aren't you amazed

  634. as you read that

  635. that such a person

  636. as you know yourself

  637. to be

  638. a needy sinner

  639. who has rebelled

  640. against God

  641. who doesn't deserve

  642. the eternal life

  643. that Jesus died

  644. to secure

  645. that as he comes

  646. to speak to you

  647. through the gospel

  648. not only does he speak

  649. to you

  650. as if you're the only

  651. person in the world

  652. but he stops

  653. over you

  654. he makes it known

  655. to you

  656. and makes it clear

  657. to you

  658. I am really

  659. intensely interested

  660. in you

  661. and in your salvation

  662. and in your well-being

  663. and where you will

  664. spend eternity

  665. he stopped

  666. and looked up

  667. to where Zacchaeus

  668. was

  669. he gave him

  670. his individual

  671. attention

  672. and divided

  673. attention

  674. as if nobody else

  675. existed in the world

  676. but then you see

  677. he called him

  678. he looked up

  679. and said to him

  680. Zacchaeus

  681. hurry

  682. and come down

  683. for I must stay

  684. at your house

  685. today

  686. and you can see

  687. that that's in the form

  688. of a summons

  689. the authority

  690. of Jesus

  691. is packed

  692. into these words

  693. the way Luke

  694. records them

  695. for us

  696. he didn't just

  697. come to Zacchaeus

  698. and look up

  699. and say

  700. would you like

  701. to come

  702. down from the tree

  703. please

  704. I've got something

  705. to say to you

  706. he said Zacchaeus

  707. hurry and come down

  708. it's a summons

  709. it's a command

  710. it's an imperative

  711. because when Jesus

  712. speaks

  713. he speaks

  714. with the authority

  715. of God

  716. the God

  717. he is

  718. it's no ordinary

  719. man

  720. and when God

  721. has a dealing

  722. with your soul

  723. and with mine

  724. you very soon

  725. become conscious

  726. that he's speaking

  727. to you in a way

  728. that no one else

  729. can

  730. and he's not

  731. speaking here

  732. to condemn him

  733. he's speaking here

  734. towards his salvation

  735. but he's speaking

  736. towards his salvation

  737. to draw him

  738. into that knowledge

  739. of himself

  740. by showing Zacchaeus

  741. I am the king

  742. I am the Lord

  743. I'm the one

  744. who has authority

  745. over your life

  746. I'm the one

  747. that's calling you

  748. now

  749. to come down

  750. from where you are

  751. and come and see me

  752. and it's the same

  753. exactly the same

  754. in the gospel

  755. the call of Jesus

  756. in the gospel

  757. for you to come

  758. and to know him

  759. if you're here tonight

  760. and you haven't yet

  761. closed in

  762. in your heart

  763. with him

  764. and received him

  765. as Zacchaeus did

  766. that call

  767. is coming to you

  768. with the full

  769. authority of heaven

  770. with all the authority

  771. of the son of God

  772. that's why it's such

  773. a really serious thing

  774. to actually not comply

  775. with that summons

  776. from God

  777. that summons

  778. where God is calling you

  779. to himself

  780. it's such a deep

  781. and serious sin

  782. just to bypass that

  783. or let it go

  784. and not reckon

  785. with it seriously

  786. because that's really

  787. what's happening

  788. in this building tonight

  789. I'm being addressed

  790. by God

  791. you're being addressed

  792. by God

  793. I know you're hearing

  794. a human voice

  795. in this pulpit

  796. but it's not the human voice

  797. you're listening out for

  798. though you're listening

  799. to it

  800. it's the voice

  801. of God

  802. in his word

  803. the voice of God

  804. in the exposition

  805. of his word

  806. the voice of Jesus

  807. as he looks up

  808. up to your vantage point

  809. and as you look down

  810. on him

  811. as it were in the gospel

  812. with the authority

  813. of God himself

  814. he is saying

  815. hurry up

  816. and come down

  817. respond

  818. to the fact

  819. that I'm here

  820. and you see

  821. he's saying

  822. hurry

  823. go to it now

  824. he's saying to Zacchaeus

  825. Zacchaeus

  826. hurry and come down

  827. Jesus didn't come

  828. to this sycamore tree

  829. and look up

  830. at Zacchaeus

  831. and say there

  832. look Zacchaeus

  833. you really ought to

  834. come down from there

  835. and if you want to do that

  836. that's fine

  837. but you can leave it

  838. until tomorrow

  839. if you like

  840. Zacchaeus

  841. hurry

  842. and come down

  843. for today

  844. I must abide

  845. at your house

  846. Jesus is saying

  847. I must abide

  848. at your house

  849. not just saying

  850. I'd like to do it

  851. if you actually

  852. will have me

  853. I'd like to do it

  854. if you feel

  855. it's right

  856. for me to come

  857. and spend time

  858. in your house

  859. no this is

  860. the same Jesus

  861. the same authority

  862. the same summons

  863. the same voice

  864. saying

  865. I must abide

  866. at your house

  867. and because I must

  868. abide at your house

  869. hurry and come down

  870. because I must do it

  871. today

  872. and so it is

  873. the way he's addressing

  874. you and I tonight

  875. and especially

  876. those of you

  877. who have not yet

  878. responded positively

  879. to his call

  880. on the gospel

  881. who are still not saved

  882. who have still not come

  883. to yield obedience

  884. to Christ

  885. and he's saying

  886. to you tonight

  887. today

  888. I require of you

  889. to do this

  890. today I need

  891. to spend

  892. time in your house

  893. today I must

  894. stay at your house

  895. really rich again

  896. in spiritual imagery

  897. that isn't it

  898. because

  899. when he says here

  900. I must stay

  901. at your house

  902. today

  903. as you turn that

  904. into what the gospel

  905. is saying to you

  906. what Jesus is saying

  907. through the gospel

  908. what he's really saying

  909. amounts to the same thing

  910. I actually need

  911. I am

  912. I'm calling on you

  913. to respond

  914. so that I can make

  915. a home for myself

  916. in your soul

  917. Jesus is not asking us

  918. to actually give ourselves

  919. to him

  920. in a part time fashion

  921. as if

  922. his living in your life

  923. was just on a

  924. B&B basis

  925. Jesus doesn't do

  926. B&B

  927. in a spiritual sense

  928. when he comes to

  929. call us in the gospel

  930. to open up our heart to him

  931. to give him a home

  932. in our hearts

  933. he's saying

  934. that's where I want to be

  935. that's where I want to live

  936. that's where I want you

  937. to know me

  938. as the occupant

  939. of your soul

  940. not just now and again

  941. not just part time

  942. but all the time

  943. and forevermore

  944. today

  945. I must abide

  946. I must stay

  947. at your house

  948. and what's the next thing

  949. you read

  950. so he hurried

  951. and came down

  952. and received him

  953. joyfully

  954. see the correspondence

  955. with the manner

  956. in which Zacchaeus

  957. responded

  958. and the call

  959. of Jesus

  960. the summons

  961. that Jesus gave him

  962. the summons said

  963. hurry and come down

  964. the response was

  965. he hurried

  966. and came down

  967. he didn't say to Jesus

  968. I'd like to

  969. but can I leave it

  970. till tomorrow

  971. can I leave it

  972. until I feel better

  973. about it

  974. can I feel

  975. can I leave it

  976. until I feel sure

  977. about my bearings

  978. he said

  979. he hurried

  980. and came down

  981. and received him

  982. joyfully

  983. there is no delay

  984. on the part

  985. of Zacchaeus

  986. the kind of delay

  987. that you and I

  988. know of in our own lives

  989. the kind of delay

  990. that perhaps is

  991. right now

  992. in your mind

  993. in your exercise

  994. where you're saying

  995. well I hear the call

  996. of Jesus

  997. in the gospel

  998. I know what he's saying

  999. to me

1000. but I'm not ready yet

  1001. no Jesus is saying

  1002. today

  1003. it's so important

  1004. that you don't say

  1005. tomorrow about it

  1006. it's so important

1007. that you don't put it off

  1008. it's so important

  1009. that you respond now

  1010. while you hear

  1011. his voice

  1012. echoing in your heart

  1013. while you're aware

  1014. of his summons

  1015. calling you

  1016. to himself

  1017. you may not hear

  1018. that tomorrow

  1019. you may find

  1020. tomorrow

  1021. that it's gone

  1022. you may find

  1023. tomorrow

  1024. that there is

  1025. no sense

  1026. of his summons

  1027. left in your soul

  1028. and you go on

  1029. with your life

  1030. and you die

  1031. without him

  1032. today I must

  1033. so he hurried

  1034. and came down

  1035. and you see

  1036. he received him

  1037. joyfully

  1038. if you are delaying

  1039. tonight

  1040. and coming

  1041. to know the Lord

  1042. and you're saying

  1043. well it's

  1044. it's my intention

  1045. to come

1046. I do want to come

  1047. it is my intention

  1048. I will do it

  1049. well it's not

  1050. just the case

  1051. that you may

  1052. never have

  1053. the opportunity

  1054. again to do it

  1055. but just think

  1056. of what you're

  1057. doing in that

  1058. very moment

  1059. of saying

  1060. yes I intend

  1061. to do it

  1062. because intention

  1063. by itself

  1064. means present

  1065. delay

  1066. and present

  1067. delay

  1068. equals

  1069. refusal

  1070. have you

  1071. have you ever

  1072. thought about

  1073. delaying

  1074. and coming

  1075. to Christ

  1076. is actually

  1077. a refusal

  1078. of him

  1079. of his summons

  1080. on your life

  1081. but that's

  1082. what it is

  1083. what is

  1084. your reason

  1085. if you're

  1086. delaying

  1087. tonight

  1088. coming to

  1089. the Lord

  1090. what is

  1091. your reason

  1092. why are you

  1093. doing that

  1094. would you go

  1095. to himself

  1096. tonight

  1097. and say

  1098. Lord

  1099. I hear

  1100. your summons

  1101. I know

  1102. that I

  1103. ought to do

  1104. it

  1105. that it's

  1106. my intention

  1107. to do it

  1108. but here is

  1109. why I cannot

  1110. do it now

  1111. though you're

  1112. calling me

  1113. to do it

  1114. now

  1115. can you

  1116. say that

  1117. to the Lord

  1118. of course

  1119. you can't

  1120. because you

  1121. know he

  1122. knows better

  1123. than that

  1124. and that as

  1125. he's calling

  1126. you to

  1127. himself

  1128. and as

  1129. he's calling

  1130. you to

  1131. himself

  1132. today

  1133. here and

  1134. now

  1135. so he's

  1136. impressing

  1137. upon you

  1138. you cannot

  1139. afford to

  1140. leave this

  1141. beyond today

  1142. because the

  1143. delay is

  1144. equal to

  1145. a refusal

  1146. and a

  1147. refusal

  1148. to the

  1149. offer of

  1150. the king

  1151. to the

  1152. claim of

  1153. the king

  1154. to the

  1155. summons of

  1156. the king

  1157. is the

  1158. most serious

  1159. thing you

  1160. can do

  1161. it's the

  1162. most serious

  1163. thing you

  1164. can do

  1165. in your

  1166. life

  1167. and you

  1168. see he

  1169. received him

  1170. joyfully

  1171. I love that

  1172. word and

  1173. you love

  1174. that those

  1175. of us who

  1176. know the

  1177. Lord love

  1178. that emphasis

  1179. there we

  1180. can relate

  1181. to it

  1182. he received

  1183. him joyfully

  1184. Zacchaeus

  1185. didn't climb

  1186. down from

  1187. that tree

  1188. and hurry

  1189. down to

  1190. meet Jesus

  1191. reluctantly

  1192. he didn't

  1193. come down

  1194. from that

  1195. tree and

  1196. said well

  1197. I have

  1198. to do

  1199. it I

  1200. suppose I

  1201. have to

  1202. do it

  1203. so I'll

  1204. just go

  1205. through with

  1206. it he

  1207. came down

  1208. from that

  1209. tree and

  1210. received

  1211. Jesus you

  1212. see that's

  1213. what it's

  1214. saying he

  1215. came down

  1216. and received

  1217. him joyfully

  1218. there's such

  1219. an emphasis

  1220. there on an

  1221. embrace by

  1222. Zacchaeus of

  1223. Jesus the

  1224. person of

  1225. Jesus and

  1226. all that came

  1227. to him in

  1228. Jesus he

  1229. received

  1230. Jesus the

  1231. summons was

  1232. really a

  1233. call to

  1234. receive Jesus

  1235. as his

  1236. savior and

  1237. he came

  1238. down and

  1239. he hurried

  1240. and came

  1241. down and

  1242. he received

  1243. him joyfully

  1244. you had

  1245. asked Zacchaeus

  1246. years after

  1247. this if he

  1248. was still

  1249. living

  1250. Zacchaeus if

  1251. you look back

  1252. over your

  1253. life what

  1254. was the most

  1255. important day

  1256. in your life

  1257. what was the

  1258. thing that gave

  1259. you the greatest

  1260. joy there

  1261. might have

  1262. been many

  1263. things that

  1264. gave Zacchaeus

  1265. great joy in

  1266. his life

  1267. much satisfaction

  1268. but he would

  1269. undoubtedly have

  1270. said oh I

  1271. can tell you

  1272. easily what

  1273. day is the

  1274. most important

  1275. in my life

  1276. and I can

  1277. tell you

  1278. equally easily

  1279. what it is

  1280. that gives me

  1281. and gave me

  1282. the most joy

  1283. and it is this

  1284. to have Jesus

  1285. as my savior

  1286. to have come

  1287. to receive him

  1288. as he offered

  1289. himself to me

  1290. the most joyful

  1291. day for me

  1292. Zacchaeus would

  1293. say is the

  1294. day I did

  1295. not let Jesus

  1296. stand and

  1297. just go away

  1298. without me

  1299. responding

  1300. the most joyful

  1301. day for me

  1302. was the day

  1303. that Jesus

  1304. summoned me

  1305. and I responded

  1306. and gladly came

  1307. to receive him

  1308. and surely

  1309. that's how it

  1310. will be for

  1311. yourself

  1312. surely

  1313. to look back

  1314. over your

  1315. life

  1316. and even

  1317. tomorrow to

  1318. look back

  1319. and say well

  1320. I know now

  1321. what happiness

  1322. really is

  1323. because I

  1324. received Jesus

  1325. I responded

  1326. as he called

  1327. upon me to do

  1328. and hurried

  1329. to take him

  1330. to myself

  1331. I received

  1332. him

  1333. joyfully

  1334. gladly

  1335. with relief

  1336. that's what

  1337. this teaches

  1338. us friends

  1339. the little

  1340. man's big

  1341. effort

  1342. and the

  1343. little man's

  1344. big change

  1345. he was addressed

  1346. by Jesus

  1347. and he

  1348. accepted Jesus

  1349. and you can

  1350. see before

  1351. your eyes

  1352. the change

  1353. taking place

  1354. Jesus

  1355. is addressing

  1356. you and

  1357. addressing me

  1358. tonight

  1359. will we

  1360. also add

  1361. the sub

  1362. paragraph

  1363. subheading

  1364. that's true

  1365. of Zacchaeus

  1366. not only was

  1367. addressed by

  1368. Jesus

  1369. but he

  1370. accepted

  1371. Jesus

  1372. he received

  1373. him

  1374. joyfully

  1375. and so

  1376. thirdly

  1377. you see

  1378. the little

  1379. man's

  1380. big heart

  1381. now it's

  1382. important

  1383. that you

  1384. actually see

  1385. that as soon

  1386. as he received

  1387. Jesus

  1388. joyfully

  1389. they all

  1390. saw it

  1391. and grumbled

  1392. he has

  1393. gone in

  1394. to be

  1395. the guest

  1396. of a man

  1397. who is a

  1398. sinner

  1399. because

  1400. receiving

  1401. Jesus

  1402. doesn't

  1403. make for

  1404. an easy

  1405. life

  1406. and the

  1407. Lord is

  1408. not saying

  1409. this to

  1410. us so

  1411. that it

  1412. will put

  1413. you off

  1414. receiving

  1415. him

  1416. or responding

  1417. gladly

  1418. to his

  1419. call

  1420. his summons

  1421. to come

  1422. to receive

  1423. him

  1424. to accept

  1425. him

  1426. but he's

  1427. putting this

  1428. in here

  1429. for us

  1430. so that

  1431. we will

  1432. have that

  1433. realism

  1434. that realizes

  1435. that the

  1436. world is

  1437. going to

  1438. be in

  1439. many ways

  1440. a different

  1441. place for

  1442. us

  1443. when we've

  1444. come to

  1445. receive Jesus

  1446. and people

  1447. have come to

  1448. realize that

  1449. he has

  1450. changed our

  1451. lives

  1452. that we've

  1453. become his

  1454. disciples

  1455. his followers

  1456. that we've

  1457. become people

  1458. who love

  1459. him and

  1460. follow him

  1461. and want

  1462. to obey

  1463. him and

  1464. commend him

  1465. to the

  1466. world around

  1467. us

  1468. but then you

  1469. see you have

  1470. to say well

  1471. yes that

  1472. makes me

  1473. question whether

  1474. I should

  1475. do it or

  1476. not

  1477. that's going

  1478. to be a

  1479. real challenge

  1480. for you

  1481. yes of course

  1482. it's going to

  1483. be a real

  1484. challenge

  1485. but who's

  1486. going to be

  1487. beside you

  1488. who's going

  1489. to strengthen

  1490. you

  1491. who's going

  1492. to assure

  1493. you as you

  1494. go through

  1495. with life

  1496. from that

  1497. point on

  1498. that you

  1499. receive Jesus

  1500. that all is

  1501. well with

  1502. your soul

  1503. he is

  1504. he's going

  1505. to be the

  1506. one beside

  1507. you

  1508. and you

  1509. can have

  1510. the whole

  1511. of the

  1512. world beside

  1513. you

  1514. and in

  1515. your support

  1516. but if

  1517. Jesus is

  1518. against you

  1519. what good

  1520. will it do

  1521. and if

  1522. you have

  1523. Jesus

  1524. with you

  1525. what harm

  1526. is it

  1527. going to

  1528. do

  1529. if the

  1530. whole world

  1531. is against

  1532. you

  1533. because it's

  1534. all about

  1535. being true

  1536. to him

  1537. and coming

  1538. to know

  1539. that he

  1540. will never

  1541. leave you

  1542. he will

  1543. never forsake

  1544. you

  1545. he'll never

  1546. be untrue

  1547. to his

  1548. promises

  1549. he'll never

  1550. do anything

  1551. other than

  1552. what he's

  1553. promised to

  1554. do and to

  1555. be for

  1556. you

  1557. so as

  1558. he received

  1559. him gladly

  1560. he met

  1561. with this

  1562. opposition

  1563. but he

  1564. was not

  1565. diverted

  1566. and he

  1567. was not

  1568. intimidated

  1569. into undoing

  1570. what he

  1571. had just

  1572. done

  1573. he came

  1574. and the

  1575. proof of

  1576. change

  1577. is in

  1578. the words

  1579. that he

  1580. said

  1581. Lord

  1582. Lord

  1583. behold

  1584. Lord

  1585. I

  1586. half of

  1587. my goods

  1588. I give

  1589. to the

  1590. poor

  1591. and if

  1592. I have

  1593. defrauded

  1594. anyone of

  1595. anything

  1596. I restore

  1597. it

  1598. fourfold

  1599. there's the

  1600. proof of

  1601. the change

  1602. just see

  1603. the way

  1604. the passage

  1605. began

  1606. he was a

  1607. tax collector

  1608. he was

  1609. rich

  1610. he gleaned

  1611. from people

  1612. as much as

  1613. he could

  1614. for his

  1615. own benefit

  1616. but he's

  1617. a different

  1618. man now

  1619. Christ has

  1620. changed him

  1621. inwardly

  1622. and what

  1623. he's saying

  1624. here about

  1625. what he's

  1626. going to

  1627. do

  1628. outwardly

  1629. in giving

  1630. away

  1631. half of

  1632. his goods

  1633. to feed

  1634. the poor

  1635. and

  1636. restoring

  1637. fourfold

  1638. to anyone

  1639. that he has

  1640. defrauded

  1641. he would

  1642. never have

  1643. said that

  1644. before he

  1645. ran up

  1646. the sycamore

  1647. tree

  1648. what's

  1649. happened

  1650. to this

  1651. man

  1652. well

  1653. Jesus

  1654. has given

  1655. him the

  1656. kind of

  1657. heart

  1658. we were

  1659. singing

  1660. about

  1661. and praying

  1662. for in

  1663. the prayer

  1664. of

  1665. Psalm

  1666. 51

  1667. create

  1668. Lord

  1669. in me

  1670. a clean

  1671. heart

  1672. change

  1673. my heart

  1674. make it a

  1675. generous

  1676. heart

  1677. make it a

  1678. heart that

  1679. reflects your

  1680. generosity

  1681. to me

  1682. he showed

  1683. that the

  1684. change was

  1685. real

  1686. because of

  1687. his vow

  1688. to be

  1689. generous to

  1690. the poor

  1691. and make

  1692. restoration

  1693. the change

  1694. that Jesus

  1695. brings

  1696. is a

  1697. total

  1698. change

  1699. not just

  1700. a change

  1701. of mind

  1702. not just

  1703. a change

  1704. in the

  1705. resolutions

  1706. you make

  1707. to yourself

  1708. it's a

  1709. change

  1710. of heart

  1711. it's a

  1712. new

  1713. view

  1714. of life

  1715. it's a

  1716. new

  1717. way

  1718. of living

  1719. it's a

  1720. new

  1721. way

  1722. of

  1723. ordering

  1724. your

  1725. life

  1726. it's

  1727. an

  1728. entirely

  1729. new

  1730. behavior

  1731. because

  1732. even if

  1733. we were

  1734. very

  1735. civil

  1736. and

  1737. decent

  1738. people

  1739. all the

  1740. way

  1741. through

  1742. our

  1743. lives

  1744. that

  1745. doesn't

  1746. mean

  1747. we

  1748. don't

  1749. need

  1750. a

  1751. new

  1752. heart

  1753. when

  1754. God

  1755. gives

  1756. us

  1757. that

  1758. new

  1759. heart

  1760. takes

  1761. on a

  1762. whole

  1763. new

  1764. perspective

  1765. the way

  1766. it

  1767. looks

  1768. at

  1769. the

  1770. world

  1771. the

  1772. way

  1773. it

  1774. looks

  1775. at

  1776. the

  1777. poor

  1778. the

  1779. way

  1780. it

  1781. looks

  1782. at

  1783. the

  1784. disadvantaged

  1785. the

  1786. way

  1787. it

  1788. looks

  1789. at

  1790. people

  1791. with

  1792. a

  1793. desire

  1794. to

  1795. support

  1796. them

  1797. the

  1798. way

  1799. it

  1800. doesn't

  1801. belittle

  1802. people

  1803. the

  1804. way

  1805. it

  1806. doesn't

  1807. disparage

  1808. people

  1809. who

  1810. are

  1811. not

  1812. so

  1813. well

  1814. off

  1815. us

  1816. ourselves

  1817. the

  1818. way

  1819. it

  1820. refuses

  1821. to

  1822. look

  1823. down

  1824. upon

  1825. people

  1826. thinking

  1827. that

  1828. we

  1829. somehow

  1830. are

  1831. best

  1832. these

  1833. are

  1834. the

  1835. evidences

  1836. of

  1837. a

  1838. new

  1839. heart

  1840. that

  1841. shows

  1842. itself

  1843. outwardly

  1844. in

  1845. behavior

  1846. the

  1847. faith

  1848. that

  1849. does

  1850. not

  1851. lead

  1852. to

  1853. our

  1854. doing

  1855. good

  1856. really

  1857. isn't

  1858. faith

  1859. the

  1860. whole

  1861. epistle

  1862. of

  1863. James

  1864. is

  1865. an

  1866. exposition

  1867. of

  1868. that

  1869. great

  1870. principle

  1871. that

  1872. point

  1873. faith

  1874. without

  1875. works

  1876. is

  1877. dead

  1878. if

  1879. Zacchaeus

  1880. had

  1881. come

  1882. down

  1883. from

  1884. that

  1885. tree

  1886. gone

  1887. back

  1888. into

  1889. the

  1890. house

  1891. and

  1892. entertained

  1893. Jesus

  1894. and

  1895. said

  1896. well

  1897. it's

  1898. been

  1899. good

  1900. having

  1901. you

  1902. thank

  1903. you

  1904. for

  1905. your

  1906. attention

  1907. but

  1908. I'm

  1909. just

  1910. going

  1911. to

  1912. go

  1913. on

  1914. the

  1915. way

  1916. that

  1917. I've

  1918. always

  1919. lived

  1920. I'm

  1921. still

  1922. going

  1923. to

  1924. rake

  1925. in

  1926. the

  1927. taxes

  1928. I'm

  1929. going

  1930. to

  1931. be

  1932. an

  1933. extortioner

  1934. I'm

  1935. going

  1936. to

  1937. take

  1938. as

  1939. much

  1940. as

  1941. I

  1942. can

  1943. for

  1944. myself

  1945. it's

  1946. a

  1947. complete

  1948. opposite

  1949. it's

  1950. a

  1951. turnaround

  1952. isn't

  1953. it

  1954. if

  1955. he

  1956. had

  1957. come

  1958. and

  1959. still

  1960. been

  1961. determined

  1962. to

  1963. live

  1964. as

  1965. he

  1966. lived

  1967. it

  1968. was

  1969. a

  1970. sign

  1971. that

  1972. he

  1973. had

  1974. never

  1975. given

  1976. his

  1977. heart

  1978. to

  1979. the

  1980. Lord

  1981. but

  1982. he

  1983. did

  1984. the

  1985. little

  1986. man

  1987. who

  1988. made

  1989. the

  1990. big

  1991. effort

  1992. the

  1993. little

  1994. man

  1995. who

  1996. experienced

  1997. the

  1998. big

  1999. change

  2000. and

  2001. the

  2002. little

  2003. man

  2004. who

  2005. had

  2006. come

  2007. now

  2008. to

  2009. have

  2010. the

  2011. big

  2012. heart

  2013. today

  2014. Jesus

  2015. is

  2016. saying

  2017. today

  2018. I

  2019. must

  2020. abide

  2021. at

  2022. your

  2023. house

  2024. hurry

  2025. don't

  2026. waste

  2027. time

  2028. come

  2029. down

  2030. let's

  2031. pray

  2032. Lord we

  2033. thank you

  2034. for the

  2035. way in

  2036. which you

  2037. address us

  2038. in your

  2039. word

  2040. forgive us

  2041. we pray

  2042. any

  2043. mishandling

  2044. of your

  2045. word that

  2046. takes

  2047. place

  2048. in our

  2049. attempt

  2050. to

  2051. give an

  2052. exposition

  2053. of its

  2054. teaching

  2055. forgive us

  2056. Lord we

  2057. pray for

  2058. the many

  2059. times that

  2060. we do

  2061. refuse to

  2062. hear your

  2063. voice

  2064. and although

  2065. we hear it

  2066. refuse to

  2067. comply

  2068. forgive us

  2069. Lord for

  2070. our delays

  2071. forgive us

  2072. for the many

  2073. times that

  2074. we have

  2075. heard your

  2076. voice and

  2077. not

  2078. complied

  2079. forgive us

  2080. Lord even

  2081. tonight

  2082. if we have

  2083. not been as

  2084. we should be

  2085. in your

  2086. presence and

  2087. responded as

  2088. we should

  2089. to your

  2090. claim upon

  2091. us

  2092. make us

  2093. thankful

  2094. Lord that

  2095. we heard

  2096. your voice

  2097. make us

  2098. thankful for

  2099. your promises

  2100. that are

  2101. true

  2102. make us

  2103. thankful for

  2104. the provision

  2105. you make

  2106. for us

  2107. in the

  2108. abundance of

  2109. life that

  2110. we have

  2111. in knowing

  2112. our Lord

  2113. Jesus Christ

  2114. and we

  2115. ask that you

  2116. would bless

  2117. this word

  2118. to us

  2119. and enable

  2120. us Lord

  2121. from this

  2122. day forth

  2123. to go

  2124. forth with

  2125. that new

  2126. resolve

  2127. to be

  2128. your people

  2129. to be

  2130. known as

  2131. your people

  2132. to make

  2133. you known

  2134. to those

  2135. around us

  2136. and to

  2137. walk

  2138. closely

  2139. with you

  2140. as our

  2141. God

  2142. hear us

  2143. we pray

  2144. for Jesus

  2145. sake

  2146. Amen

  2147. well our

  2148. final psalm

  2149. this evening

  2150. is Psalm

  2151. 119

  2152. 119

  2153. the Scottish

  2154. Psalter

  2155. version

  2156. that's on

  2157. page 404

  2158. we're singing

  2159. four verses

  2160. from verse 57

  2161. down to

  2162. verse 60

  2163. tune is

  2164. Belmont

  2165. now my

  2166. sure portion

  2167. art alone

  2168. which I

  2169. did choose

  2170. O Lord

  2171. I have

  2172. resolved

  2173. and said

  2174. that I

  2175. would keep

  2176. thy holy

  2177. word

  2178. with my

  2179. whole heart

  2180. I did

  2181. entreat

  2182. thy face

  2183. and favour

  2184. free

  2185. according

  2186. to thy

  2187. gracious

  2188. word

  2189. be

  2190. merciful

  2191. to me

  2192. I

  2193. thought

  2194. upon

  2195. my

  2196. former

  2197. ways

  2198. and

  2199. did

  2200. my

  2201. life

  2202. well

  2203. try

  2204. and

  2205. to

  2206. thy

  2207. testimonies

  2208. pure

  2209. my

  2210. feet

  2211. then

  2212. turned

  2213. I

  2214. I

  2215. did

  2216. not

  2217. stay

  2218. nor

  2219. linger

  2220. long

  2221. as

  2222. those

  2223. that

  2224. slothful

  2225. are

  2226. but

  2227. hastily

  2228. thy

  2229. laws

  2230. to

  2231. keep

  2232. myself

  2233. I

  2234. did

  2235. prepare

  2236. these

  2237. four

  2238. verses

  2239. in

  2240. conclusion

  2241. are

  2242. iph

  2243. oh

  2244. oh

2245. The Lord is home, and set the time to give Thy holy word.

2246. With my whole heart I descend thee, Thy grace and favor free.

2247. According to Thy gracious word, He menscheeful to me.

2248. I thought upon my former ways, And did my life well die?

2249. Until Thy testimonies pure, My feet then turneth I.

2250. I did not sin nor linger long, As those that sorrowful are.

2251. But history I lost to keep, Myself I did prepare.

2252. We'll give thanks for the food prepared at the fellowship,

2253. and then after the benediction I'll go to the side door here to my left.

2254. Lord our God, we give thanks for all the provision You make for us.

2255. And at this time we thank You for the food prepared.

2256. We thank You for those who have prepared it for us.

2257. And we pray that You would bless it to us,

2258. and help us, Lord, to wait upon You,

2259. even for our ordinary course in this life,

2260. that we may live and move and depend on You with our being.

2261. We ask that Your blessing from the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God,

2262. may be our portion now and evermore.

  2263. Amen.

  2264. Amen.

  2265. Amen.
