  1. We're going to begin our worship by singing to God's praise in Psalm 19, the Scottish Psalter

  2. version, page 223. We can sing from verse 7 down to verse 11. Psalm 19, page 223, God's law is

  3. perfect and converts. The soul in sin that lies, God's testimony is most sure and makes the simple

  4. wise. We'll sing from verse 7 to 11 and the tune is Evan.

  5. God's law is perfect and converts. The soul in sin that lies, God's testimony is most sure

  6. and makes the simple wise. The statutes of the law are right and do rejoice the heart.

  7. The Lord commanded pure and applied to the eyes in power.

  8. Unspotted is the fear of God and of danger forever.

  9. The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.

  10. they more than gold gave our kind gold to be decided our.

  11. And hold thee, hold thee from the tomb that troppeth sweeter far.

  12. Moreover, may thy servant born have ye his life should bring.

  13. A great reward provided is for them that keep the same.

  14. We'll come to God in prayer. Let us pray.

  15. Amen.

  16. Lord, it's no matter the weather that we can have something to complain about.

  17. We complain about the cold and the wet so often.

  18. Maybe just now we complain about the heat.

  19. But we thank you that whatever our circumstances, Lord, that we have reason to rejoice and give thanks in you.

  20. That you are the God of creation.

  21. That you are the God of heaven and earth.

  22. That you are the God who has made us in your image.

  23. You are the God who has formed us and formed us with a particular purpose.

  24. And our purpose to be a people who would worship you.

  25. Who would praise your name.

  26. And we thank you for every reason we have to give thanks to you.

  27. We thank you for all that we have in life.

  28. We thank you for our homes and our communities.

  29. We thank you for our congregation here and the people we have around us.

  30. We thank you for our fellowship in Christ.

  31. And we pray, Lord, that you will strengthen us and uphold us in all of these things.

  32. That you will build us up as a people.

  33. Those who come and attend regularly.

  34. Those who come from time to time.

  35. Those who visit us, Lord, especially over these months of summer.

  36. We find so many people traveling through our islands.

  37. And who come to services from time to time.

  38. We thank you that we can still come and join together as one in Christ.

  39. And we pray that even this evening that you will unite us in these bonds of fellowship in Christ.

  40. And that you will bless your word to us all.

  41. Remembering those not here with us but who are tuning in online.

  42. Whether it's live stream or at another point in the days ahead.

  43. We do pray, Lord, that as your word goes out to us.

  44. That you will bless it to us.

  45. We thank you that your word has reminded us as we've sung together.

  46. That your word, your law is perfect.

  47. And converts the soul and sin that lies.

  48. And we pray for that power to be evident in our midst.

  49. For we are all sinners who fall short.

  50. And we can do nothing in and of ourselves for our own salvation.

  51. We cannot convert ourselves or anyone else.

  52. But we thank you for your word and your spirit.

  53. And the power that is behind them.

  54. That you are able to do so much more than we ask or imagine.

  55. And so we pray, Lord, for both your presence with us this evening.

  56. And your power upon us.

  57. That we will know you are God.

  58. Help us to be still and to know that.

  59. We give you thanks, Lord, for our families and our communities.

  60. And recognize the many different needs that are around us.

  61. Remember those who are mourning and grieving in our midst.

  62. In this past week alone and in these last number of months.

  63. And even down over the years, Lord.

  64. We know the sense of grief that we experience in life can and does stay with us all our days.

  65. Old wounds can be reopened.

  66. Wounds that never healed can still hurt day after day.

  67. And we pray, Lord, that in our grief and in those who are grieving around us.

  68. That we would know your comfort.

  69. We pray that for all who need it at this time.

  70. We pray for mourning families.

  71. We pray for mourning communities.

  72. For friends.

  73. Neighbors who have lost loved ones even in these days.

  74. We pray, Lord, for your spirit to be near as the great comforter.

  75. To be near to those who are broken hearted.

  76. That you would bind them up.

  77. We pray, too, for those who are unwell.

  78. Both at home and in hospital.

  79. We pray for those who are in the homes around the town as well.

  80. And further afield, too.

  81. Those who are in old age.

  82. We pray for them, Lord.

  83. For you to surround them and to be with them.

  84. Each one, Lord, with their own different needs.

  85. But thankful that their needs are known unto you.

  86. And that you are able to help.

  87. You are able to help in ways that we cannot.

  88. We pray for comfort.

  89. For grace.

  90. For your peace to surround.

  91. Pray that for us all, O Lord.

  92. In our days as they go on.

  93. In our homes.

  94. In our families.

  95. In our workplaces.

  96. In our community.

  97. In all that we do for the Lord.

  98. Lord, may we know your protection over us.

  99. And your grace and peace with us.

  100. We do thank you for your word.

  101. And for the good news that is the gospel.

  102. And we pray that as it's proclaimed today.

  103. And in all the days ahead.

  104. That it will bear so much fruit in our midst.

  105. That you will bring people to know the wonder of Jesus Christ.

  106. The wonder of all so much in life that we try and do.

  107. In and for ourselves.

  108. And the futility of so much of it.

  109. But yet the wonder of your grace.

  110. The wonder of faith in the Lord Jesus.

  111. The gift of God.

  112. We pray, Lord, that we will marvel more and more in that.

  113. So may your message go out with power to all ends of our islands today.

  114. We give you thanks for the work of the faith mission over these last couple of weeks in point.

  115. For the many people who have attended from different parts of the island.

  116. On each evening occasion.

  117. And we pray for fruit from that.

  118. We pray your blessing on all who have been involved in organizing and leading it.

  119. And this evening as they gather on this, the last day of it.

  120. Lord, we pray for your spirit to be with them.

  121. We pray, Lord, for the words of the psalm that we have sung.

  122. That your word would bring people to life.

  123. To convert the souls that lie in sin.

  124. We pray, Lord, your blessing.

  125. And to follow all that is done in your name.

  126. We pray for our nation and the nations of the world.

  127. We pray your blessing on us in these days.

  128. That you will turn us from the ways of the world.

  129. Turn us towards you.

  130. From the top leadership in our land.

  131. Down through all areas of life.

  132. We pray, Lord, for your blessing and your peace.

  133. To be restored upon us.

  134. We know there are so many anxieties and fears and concerns throughout our world.

  135. But we thank you that you are our God.

  136. The one who made the world.

  137. The one who cares for it.

  138. The one who is able to turn darkness into light.

  139. And so we pray, Lord, that even as your light goes forth.

  140. That you will send it out with power.

  141. We continue to lean upon you.

  142. Asking your blessing on all that we do in your name.

  143. Asking your blessing on the youth fellowship as they meet this night.

  144. May you be with them in that.

  145. And asking your blessing in the week ahead.

  146. In all the different activities of it, Lord.

  147. In our homes and our families.

  148. In community and church life.

  149. That we will do all as unto the Lord.

  150. We ask now, Lord, that you will bless us as we continue to wait upon you.

  151. To hear your word.

  152. And to offer up our praise.

  153. Lead us in the singing, Lord.

  154. And uphold him as he leads us in it.

  155. And may we sing with joy in our hearts.

  156. To you as our Lord.

  157. And as our God.

  158. So continue with us.

  159. Bless us.

  160. Guide us through your word.

  161. And forgive us for all our sins.

  162. As we ask all things.

  163. In the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

  164. For his sake.

  165. And for his glory.

  166. Amen.

  167. Amen.

  168. We'll again sing to God's praise.

  169. This time in Psalm 77.

  170. In the Sing Psalms version.

  171. Page 100 of the psalm book.

  172. Psalm 77.

  173. We'll sing from verse 1 to verse 9.

  174. The tune for this verse singing from the psalmist Glen Cairn.

  175. I cried aloud to God for help.

  176. I prayed that God would hear.

  177. When I was plunged in deep distress.

  178. I sought the Lord in prayer.

  179. We'll sing from verse 1 to verse 9.

  180. To God's praise.

  181. Amen.

  182. Amen.

  183. Amen.

  184. Amen.

  185. Amen.

  186. Amen.

  187. Amen.

  188. Amen.

  189. Amen.

  190. Amen.

  191. Amen.

  192. Amen.

  193. Amen.

  194. Amen.

  195. Amen.

  196. Amen.

  197. Amen.

  198. Amen.

  199. which have gone by.

  200. Throughout the watches of the night,

  201. my songs I call to mind.

  202. I ponder deeply

  203. while my heart and answer

  204. try to find.

  205. Forever will the Lord reject

  206. and never show His grace

  207. as He withdrawn His steadfast love

  208. and turned from me His way.

  209. For all time has His promise failed,

  210. is God no longer kind.

  211. Has He in His great wrath dismissed

  212. compassion from His mind.

  213. Amen.

  214. We can turn to read in God's Word now.

  215. We're going to read in Paul's letter to the Galatians.

  216. The chapters on the notice sheet are the wrong chapters.

  217. I sent the wrong information.

  218. It's from chapter 2, verse 15,

  219. into chapter 3, verse 14.

  220. So we're sticking up by reading in chapter 2,

  221. and at verse 15,

  222. reading down into chapter 3, verse 14.

  223. Let us hear the Word of God.

  224. We ourselves are Jews by birth

  225. and not Gentile sinners.

  226. Yet we know that a person is not justified

  227. by works of the law,

  228. but through faith in Jesus Christ.

  229. So we also have believed in Christ Jesus

  230. in order to be justified by faith in Christ

  231. and not by works of the law,

  232. because by works of the law

  233. no one will be justified.

  234. But if in our endeavor to be justified in Christ

  235. we too are found to be sinners in Christ,

  236. then a servant of sin?

  237. Certainly not.

  238. For if I rebuild what I tore down,

  239. I prove myself to be a transgressor.

  240. For through the law I died to the law,

  241. so that I might live to God.

  242. I have been crucified with Christ.

  243. It's no longer I who live,

  244. but Christ who lives in me.

  245. And the life I now live in the flesh

  246. I live by faith in the Son of God,

  247. who loved me and gave himself for me.

  248. I do not nullify the grace of God,

  249. for if justification were through the law,

  250. then Christ died for no purpose.

  251. O foolish Galatians,

  252. who has bewitched you?

  253. It was before your eyes

  254. that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified.

  255. Let me ask you only this.

  256. Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law

  257. or by hearing with faith?

  258. Are you so foolish?

  259. Having begun by the Spirit,

  260. are you now being perfected by the flesh?

  261. Did you suffer so many things in vain,

  262. if indeed it was in vain?

  263. Does he who supplies the Spirit to you

  264. and works miracles among you

  265. do so by works of the law

  266. or by hearing with faith?

  267. Just as Abraham believed God

  268. and it was counted to him as righteousness.

  269. Know then that it is those of faith

  270. who are the sons of Abraham.

  271. And the Scripture,

  272. foreseeing that God would justify

  273. the Gentiles by faith,

  274. preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham,

  275. saying,

  276. In you shall the nations be blessed.

  277. So then those who are of faith are blessed,

  278. along with Abraham,

  279. the man of faith.

  280. For all who rely on works of the law

  281. are under their curse.

  282. For it is written,

  283. Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things

  284. written in the book of the law,

  285. and do them.

  286. Now it is evident that no one is justified

  287. before God by the law,

  288. for the righteous shall live by faith.

  289. But the law is not of faith,

  290. rather,

  291. the one who does them shall live by them.

  292. Christ redeemed us

  293. from the curse of the law

  294. by becoming a curse for us.

  295. For it is written,

  296. Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree,

  297. so that in Christ Jesus

  298. the blessing of Abraham might come

  299. to the Gentiles,

  300. so that we might receive the promised Spirit

  301. through faith.

  302. And so on and may God bless

  303. that reading from his word.

  304. I will again turn to Psalm 77

  305. as we continue to sing to God's praise.

  306. We are going to take up our singing

  307. at verse A10

  308. and down to verse 15.

  309. The tune this time is Spore.

  310. Now in the first part we were singing

  311. verse 1 to 9,

  312. you notice that the psalmist has many questions,

  313. difficult questions

  314. that the Lord is being asked by him.

  315. In verse 7,

  316. Forever will the Lord reject

  317. and never show his grace.

  318. Has he withdrawn his steadfast love

  319. and turned from me his face?

  320. There's this questioning going on

  321. in the psalmist's heart.

  322. Where is God in all that's going on

  323. in my life and all around us?

  324. But then in verse 10 to verse 15,

  325. we're reminded that God is there.

  326. Then to my heart there came this thought.

  327. On this I will rely

  328. the years of the right hand of power

  329. of him who is most high.

  330. I will recall the Lord's great deeds,

  331. your works of long ago.

  332. I'll meditate on all your acts,

  333. your mighty deeds I'll show.

  334. Verse 15 reminds us

  335. that God has, as it says,

  336. you have redeemed your people, Lord,

  337. with your almighty arm.

  338. So we'll sing from verse 10

  339. down to verse 15

  340. to God's praise.

  341. Amen.

  342. Then to my heart there came this thought.

  343. On this I will rely.

  344. The years of the right hand of power

  345. of him who is most high.

  346. I will recall the Lord's great deeds,

  347. your words of love and hope.

  348. I'll meditate on all your acts,

  349. your mighty deeds I'll show.

  350. O God most holy and pure ways,

  351. what God compare with you.

  352. You are the God of miracles,

  353. whose heart the nation knew.

  354. You have redeemed your people, Lord,

  355. with your almighty arm.

  356. Jacob's and Joseph's children,

  357. you delivered them all harm.

  358. Amen.

  359. Amen.

  360. Amen.

  361. Amen.

  362. Amen.

  363. Amen.

  364. Amen.

  365. And we can turn back to our reading

  366. in Galatians,

  367. in particular chapter 3

  368. and verse 10

  369. down to verse 14.

  370. Galatians chapter 3

    Galatians 3:10–14

  371. verse 10 to 14

  372. is going to be our focus

  373. together this evening.

  374. A section that speaks

  375. about being cursed

  376. or redeemed.

  377. Verse 13 reminds us, though,

  378. that Christ redeemed us

  379. from the curse of the law

  380. by becoming a curse for us.

  381. For it is written,

  382. cursed is everyone

  383. who is hanged on a tree.

  384. Paul was writing to the church

  385. in Galatia,

  386. which is modern-day Turkey,

  387. a number of congregations

  388. in that area,

  389. churches that had been blessed

  390. by the work of God

  391. in their midst

  392. and seeing many people

  393. coming to faith.

  394. But yet he is writing to them

  395. because of a problem

  396. that was in their midst,

  397. a problem that was becoming

  398. more and more serious.

  399. The people were being

  400. led astray,

  401. led away

  402. from the faith

  403. that they had come to

  404. and instead being focused

  405. more and more

  406. upon the works

  407. of the law

  408. by the teachers

  409. who were coming

  410. into their midst.

  411. So Paul writes to them

  412. with this powerful reminder.

  413. One of the most powerful ones

  414. is at the end of chapter 2

  415. where it says in verse 21,

  416. I do not nullify the grace of God,

  417. for if justification

  418. were through the law,

  419. then Christ died for no purpose.

  420. And that's a powerful reminder

  421. to the people then

  422. and to ourselves this evening

  423. as well as we think

  424. of how we're living our lives.

  425. Are we relying fully

  426. on faith in Christ?

  427. Or are we thinking to ourselves,

  428. well I can justify myself

  429. through God

  430. by keeping the law?

  431. There is a powerful reminder

  432. to us

  433. if we are living by the law

  434. and justifying ourselves

  435. and we're saying

  436. Christ died

  437. for no purpose.

  438. But we see as we go on

  439. that Paul is reminding

  440. them and us

  441. that Christ died

  442. for a purpose

  443. to redeem

  444. his people.

  445. Now the question

  446. for ourselves tonight

  447. is are we a people

  448. who are easily

  449. led astray?

  450. Just as the people were

  451. in the churches

  452. around Galatia,

  453. they were being led astray

  454. by false teachers

  455. all around them.

  456. How are we

  457. when it comes

  458. to being led astray?

  459. Someone encourages

  460. us to do something

  461. we know

  462. it may be not right,

  463. we know it may be

  464. bad for us,

  465. but do we feel

  466. our pressure?

  467. Are we led astray

  468. and do we go ahead

  469. and do it anyway?

  470. Perhaps it's happened

  471. in your life,

  472. it's happened

  473. in my own life,

  474. I know that.

  475. We're led astray

  476. in different ways.

  477. But what about

  478. when it comes

  479. to faith?

  480. Are we being led astray

  481. when it comes

  482. to our faith?

  483. Are we hearing

  484. one thing

  485. that makes us think

  486. well it's all about faith?

  487. But then we're listening

  488. to someone else

  489. who says no

  490. but it's about

  491. what you do yourself

  492. as well,

  493. how you can add

  494. to your faith

  495. through works

  496. of the law.

  497. Well that's the kind

  498. of challenge

  499. that Paul was writing

  500. to address

  501. and a challenge

  502. to ourselves

  503. as well.

  504. They are being led astray

  505. and he's showing them

  506. this problem

  507. at the beginning

  508. of chapter 3

  509. by asking them

  510. questions,

  511. again powerful questions,

  512. who has bewitched you

  513. he says

  514. at the very beginning

  515. of chapter 3.

  516. There's a number

  517. of other questions

  518. he says in verse 2,

  519. let me ask you

  520. only this,

  521. did you receive

  522. the Spirit

  523. by works of the law

  524. or by hearing

  525. with faith?

  526. Again,

  527. they're challenging

  528. questions to ourselves.

  529. What is our faith?

  530. What is our foundation

  531. of our faith,

  532. self or Christ?

  533. He brings them back

  534. to look at Abraham

  535. in the Old Testament,

  536. the father of the faith,

  537. one who they would

  538. all be looking to

  539. as so important

  540. when it comes

  541. to faith

  542. and yet he reminds them

  543. that it was through faith

  544. he believed in God

  545. and it was counted

  546. to him

  547. as righteousness.

  548. It was all about faith.

  549. And then in the section

  550. we're looking at

  551. this evening,

  552. verse 10 to 14,

  553. he continues

  554. to illustrate this

  555. for them

  556. that they're being

  557. led astray

  558. by law-based salvation

  559. and that they need

  560. instead

  561. to rely fully

  562. on Christ

  563. who is able

  564. to redeem.

  565. Coastal erosion

  566. is a term

  567. we hear so often

  568. these days.

  569. A term

  570. we see the effects

  571. of around us

  572. in the islands

  573. and different places.

  574. We see the effect

  575. of what happens.

  576. But how quickly

  577. does coastal erosion

  578. happen?

  579. How quickly

  580. do we see

  581. the damage

  582. that it brings?

  583. So often

  584. it's not just

  585. an instant event.

  586. It's something

  587. that happens

  588. over a long period

  589. of time.

  590. The effects

  591. of wind

  592. and waves,

  593. the effects

  594. of tides

  595. and storms

  596. on our coast.

  597. The wearing down

  598. over many,

  599. many years

  600. and yet the effects

  601. can sometimes

  602. be devastating.

  603. You see it

  604. perhaps

  605. more clearly

  606. down in the

  607. south coast

  608. of England.

  609. A place

  610. that has been

  611. in the news

  612. the last number

  613. of years

  614. where houses

  615. that were built

  616. near the shore,

  617. near cliff edges

  618. but in the people's eyes

  619. far enough away

  620. not to be impacted

  621. by any erosion.

  622. You're seeing now

  623. that during a process

  624. over a long period

  625. of time

  626. the cliffs

  627. has been worn away

  628. and now we're finding

  629. that houses

  630. are slipping

  631. into the sea.

  632. Disaster strikes

  633. when erosion

  634. takes place.

  635. And that's the way

  636. it is

  637. with faith.

  638. Faith

  639. is to be based

  640. in Christ

  641. but over a period

  642. of time

  643. erosion

  644. can come in

  645. and we maybe

  646. it's when we are

  647. already in faith

  648. or when we're

  649. considering our faith

  650. and the faith

  651. that we need

  652. in Christ

  653. we can allow

  654. other things

  655. to come in

  656. that over a period

  657. of time

  658. just erode

  659. away at us

  660. and the foundation

  661. it starts

  662. to crumble

  663. and eventually

  664. a slide

  665. takes place.

  666. That's what's

  667. happening here

  668. in Galatia

  669. and for that reason

  670. it's something

  671. we have to guard

  672. against ourselves

  673. as well

  674. to make sure

  675. that we are always

  676. living our life

  677. looking to the

  678. foundation of our faith

  679. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  680. So Paul teaches

  681. how to be grounded

  682. in faith

  683. and not the works

  684. of the law

  685. is what counts.

  686. And so we want

  687. to just look

  688. through these verses

  689. in 10 to 14

  690. and think of it

  691. under this idea

  692. of erosion

  693. and how erosion

  694. can come in

  695. and how we guard

  696. ourselves

  697. against it.

  698. So first we think

  699. of erosion

  700. how it starts

  701. and how this can happen

  702. over a long period

  703. of time

  704. and the real

  705. cause of the erosion

  706. here in the Galatians

  707. faith is

  708. a misunderstanding

  709. of the law.

  710. Paul has taken

  711. the people back

  712. to the Old Testament

  713. to the father

  714. of the faith

  715. Abram

  716. and following that

  717. he continues

  718. to look at the Old Testament

  719. and to show

  720. how they've misunderstood

  721. the importance

  722. and the place

  723. of the law.

  724. Not saying

  725. the law isn't important

  726. it is

  727. but their understanding

  728. of it

  729. is what has gone wrong.

  730. the false teachers

  731. who believe

  732. that the law

  733. was the only way

  734. to avoid

  735. the curse of God

  736. they have been

  737. teaching that

  738. in the churches

  739. in Galatia

  740. and through this

  741. erosion is coming in.

  742. And Paul shows

  743. that if they are

  744. going to rely

  745. on this

  746. they're not avoiding

  747. the curse

  748. but they're bringing

  749. themselves

  750. even more

  751. under the curse.

  752. why is that?

  753. Well

  754. because when we

  755. think of the law

  756. and the law

  757. that the false

  758. teachers had

  759. was not just

  760. the moral law

  761. of the Old Testament

  762. it had been added

  763. to by themselves

  764. so many other laws

  765. that people

  766. had to keep

  767. circumcision

  768. being one of the

  769. main things

  770. and without

  771. keeping

  772. every law

  773. then

  774. they couldn't

  775. please

  776. God

  777. they couldn't

  778. satisfy God

  779. they couldn't

  780. turn this curse

  781. that they were

  782. away because of sin

  783. they couldn't

  784. get rid of it.

  785. Paul is saying

  786. if you could

  787. possibly do this

  788. and you could

  789. save yourself

  790. as we go back

  791. to the end

  792. of chapter 2

  793. you're saying

  794. Christ died

  795. for no purpose.

  796. And he's saying

  797. to them

  798. you cannot rely

  799. on the works

  800. of the law

  801. to save you

  802. from the curse.

  803. because the

  804. foundation of

  805. faith

  806. on being

  807. justified

  808. before God

  809. is not as

  810. the Jews

  811. would teach

  812. completing

  813. and fulfilling

  814. all of the

  815. law

  816. because it

  817. just cannot

  818. be done.

  819. And so

  820. therefore

  821. for them

  822. and for us

  823. if we

  824. believe

  825. that we

  826. can please

  827. God

  828. through our

  829. law keeping

  830. and doing

  831. everything

  832. right

  833. as it were

  834. according to

  835. all the

  836. law of God

  837. we're never

  838. going to

  839. achieve it.

  840. You're never

  841. going to

  842. do it.

  843. And to try

  844. and do it

  845. is only to

  846. allow the

  847. erosion of

  848. faith

  849. in your

  850. life.

  851. And the

  852. way of

  853. salvation

  854. instead of

  855. being through

  856. faith

  857. is through

  858. yourself

  859. and through

  860. completing

  861. every aspect

  862. of the

  863. law.

  864. So there's

  865. this erosion

  866. that comes

  867. in.

  868. And the

  869. danger with

  870. as Paul

  871. highlights so

  872. often with

  873. this idea of

  874. being able to

  875. keep the

  876. law fully

  877. is that in

  878. realizing we

  879. can never

  880. do it

  881. we start

  882. to feel

  883. discouraged.

  884. We start

  885. to feel

  886. despair and

  887. despondency

  888. coming in.

  889. And we look

  890. at others

  891. thinking oh

  892. but they're

  893. managing it

  894. they're

  895. managing to

  896. keep all

  897. the laws

  898. so perfectly

  899. but nobody

  900. can.

  901. There's nobody

  902. in here you

  903. could look to

  904. and say but

  905. that person

  906. has managed

  907. it because

  908. none of us

  909. can keep

  910. every law

  911. perfectly.

  912. And so if

  913. we feel we

  914. could do it

  915. and we

  916. can't we

  917. become

  918. despondent.

  919. And that's

  920. the danger

  921. for the

  922. people in

  923. Galatia.

  924. And the

  925. erosion we

  926. would call

  927. today is

  928. backsliding.

  929. We start

  930. to fall

  931. away.

  932. from God.

  933. And it's

  934. always a

  935. dangerous

  936. place to

  937. be.

  938. To start

  939. to backslide.

  940. To start

  941. to fall

  942. away from

  943. God.

  944. And just

  945. like then

  946. and so

  947. it is now

  948. one of the

  949. main reasons

  950. is that we

  951. can be led

  952. astray.

  953. We can be

  954. led into

  955. this idea

  956. that we

  957. can add

  958. to our

  959. salvation.

  960. We can

  961. achieve

  962. our

  963. salvation.

  964. We can

  965. keep

  966. the law

  967. when we

  968. can't.

  969. backsliding

  970. so often

  971. starts in

  972. a subtle

  973. way.

  974. And most

  975. of the

  976. time we're

  977. not even

  978. aware of

  979. it.

  980. And many

  981. of us

  982. may be

  983. backslidden

  984. and we

  985. don't even

  986. realize it.

  987. It happens

  988. so often.

  989. When you

  990. think of

  991. coastal

  992. erosion and

  993. just how

  994. gradually that

  995. comes in,

  996. unless you're

  997. maybe recording

  998. images of it

  999. over a period

  1000. of years,

  1001. you maybe

  1002. don't even

  1003. realize just

  1004. how much

  1005. of the

  1006. coastline

  1007. has

  1008. disappeared.

  1009. And one

  1010. of the

  1011. causes of

  1012. our

  1013. backsliding

  1014. in faith

  1015. is just

  1016. over time

  1017. all of

  1018. these things

  1019. just eroding

  1020. our faith,

  1021. making us

  1022. feel

  1023. discouragement

  1024. and despair,

  1025. then we

  1026. start to

  1027. neglect

  1028. things.

  1029. We start

  1030. to turn

  1031. away things

  1032. that are

  1033. so important.

  1034. If you

  1035. neglect a

  1036. relationship,

  1037. that relationship

  1038. is going

  1039. to deteriorate.

  1040. And that's

  1041. what Paul

  1042. is getting

  1043. at here.

  1044. When you

  1045. start to

  1046. rely on

  1047. the law,

  1048. your

  1049. relationship

  1050. with God,

  1051. your faith

  1052. in Him,

  1053. your trust

  1054. in Him

  1055. is being

  1056. neglected.

  1057. And over

  1058. time,

  1059. that's just

  1060. going to

  1061. get worse.

  1062. And we

  1063. see it

  1064. ourselves

  1065. today with

  1066. the danger

  1067. of backsliding

  1068. and erosion

  1069. in our

  1070. faith.

  1071. Neglect

  1072. is such

  1073. a key

  1074. thing that

  1075. we have

  1076. to guard

  1077. against.

  1078. The neglect

  1079. of reading

  1080. God's

  1081. Word,

  1082. of listening

  1083. to what

  1084. God's

  1085. Word is

  1086. saying to

  1087. us.

  1088. The neglect

  1089. of prayer.

  1090. Stopping

  1091. to pray

  1092. because we

  1093. feel discouraged.

  1094. Maybe our

  1095. prayers are

  1096. not being

  1097. heard or

  1098. answered.

  1099. We feel

  1100. discouraged

  1101. and that's

  1102. what we

  1103. neglect

  1104. it.

  1105. Neglecting

  1106. the fellowship

  1107. of the

  1108. church,

  1109. of being

  1110. together

  1111. with God's

  1112. people.

  1113. It starts

  1114. in subtle

  1115. ways,

  1116. but neglect

  1117. neglect always

  1118. ends up

  1119. in backsliding

  1120. and turning

  1121. away from

  1122. God.

  1123. And it's

  1124. something we

  1125. always have

  1126. to be on

  1127. our guard

  1128. against.

  1129. Whatever way

  1130. the erosion

  1131. starts to

  1132. come in,

  1133. we have to

  1134. be aware

  1135. of the

  1136. different ways

  1137. it can

  1138. and to be

  1139. on our

  1140. guard

  1141. against it.

  1142. So we

  1143. see first

  1144. of all how

  1145. Paul is

  1146. warning here

  1147. how erosion

  1148. comes in.

  1149. For all

  1150. who rely

  1151. on works

  1152. of the

  1153. law

  1154. are under

  1155. a curse.

  1156. There's

  1157. this burden

  1158. that we're

  1159. under.

  1160. Then we

  1161. see the

  1162. effects

  1163. of erosion.

  1164. The

  1165. curse

  1166. of the

  1167. law

  1168. is what

  1169. is mentioned

  1170. here.

  1171. When we

  1172. see erosion

  1173. setting in,

  1174. there's

  1175. consequences

  1176. to it.

  1177. It happens

  1178. as we

  1179. think of

  1180. coastal

  1181. erosion.

  1182. As it

  1183. starts to

  1184. take place

  1185. more and

  1186. more,

  1187. there's

  1188. always

  1189. consequences

  1190. to it.

  1191. It leads

  1192. to destruction

  1193. at some

  1194. point along

  1195. the way.

  1196. And so

  1197. it is

  1198. with our

  1199. faith.

  1200. When the

  1201. erosion

  1202. sets in,

  1203. there's

  1204. always

  1205. consequences

  1206. to it.

  1207. But the

  1208. most serious

  1209. consequence

  1210. is this,

  1211. that we

  1212. end up

  1213. cursed

  1214. under

  1215. this

  1216. curse.

  1217. curse.

  1218. Cursed

  1219. be

  1220. everyone

  1221. who

  1222. does

  1223. not

  1224. abide

  1225. by

  1226. all

  1227. the

  1228. things

  1229. written

  1230. in the

  1231. book

  1232. of

  1233. the

  1234. law

  1235. and

  1236. do

  1237. them.

  1238. Again,

  1239. we see

  1240. Paul here

  1241. quoting the

  1242. Old Testament

  1243. there in

  1244. verse 10.

  1245. And so

  1246. there's this

  1247. realization,

  1248. Paul is

  1249. saying,

  1250. that if you

  1251. want to

  1252. follow this

  1253. way of

  1254. the law

  1255. and keeping

  1256. it all,

  1257. you're

  1258. cursed if

  1259. you cannot

  1260. keep it

  1261. all.

  1262. every

  1263. single

  1264. part

  1265. of it.

  1266. There are

  1267. consequences

  1268. to it.

  1269. The law

  1270. of God

  1271. is

  1272. perfect.

  1273. We sang

  1274. that in

  1275. Psalm 19.

  1276. God's

  1277. law is

  1278. perfect.

  1279. It

  1280. converts.

  1281. But what

  1282. does

  1283. conversion

  1284. mean?

  1285. It doesn't

  1286. mean

  1287. ourselves

  1288. keeping

  1289. the law

  1290. in its

  1291. entirety,

  1292. but about

  1293. looking to

  1294. the one,

  1295. the only

  1296. one who

  1297. is able

  1298. to fulfill

  1299. the law

  1300. in its

  1301. entirety,

  1302. the Lord

  1303. Jesus

  1304. Christ.

  1305. The law

  1306. cannot be

  1307. wholly

  1308. kept by

  1309. anyone.

  1310. And so

  1311. everyone who

  1312. comes under

  1313. the law

  1314. is cursed.

  1315. If we

  1316. cannot keep

  1317. it,

  1318. we are

  1319. cursed.

  1320. And we

  1321. saw what

  1322. a curse

  1323. from the

  1324. Lord means

  1325. this morning

  1326. when Jesus

  1327. cursed the

  1328. fig tree.

  1329. It

  1330. withered,

  1331. it

  1332. died,

  1333. it

  1334. bore

  1335. no

  1336. fruit.

  1337. And that's

  1338. the danger

  1339. of the

  1340. curse,

  1341. the consequences

  1342. that we're

  1343. under.

  1344. If we

  1345. seek to

  1346. keep the

  1347. law in

  1348. its entirety,

  1349. in its

  1350. fullness,

  1351. we cannot

  1352. do it and

  1353. we end

  1354. up cursed.

  1355. And that

  1356. leads us

  1357. to this

  1358. point where

  1359. we can do

  1360. nothing for

  1361. ourselves.

  1362. We are

  1363. cursed under

  1364. the law.

  1365. We are

  1366. just,

  1367. as Jesus

  1368. makes clear

  1369. for us,

  1370. we would

  1371. be cursed,

  1372. we would

  1373. be damned.

  1374. That is

  1375. what we

  1376. are.

  1377. So

  1378. everybody,

  1379. it says

  1380. here,

  1381. who is

  1382. everybody,

  1383. it is

  1384. just that.

  1385. It is

  1386. everyone.

  1387. There's no

  1388. one who

  1389. can avoid

  1390. this.

  1391. We all

  1392. come under

  1393. the law

  1394. of God,

  1395. but none

  1396. of us,

  1397. no one,

  1398. can keep

  1399. it perfectly.

  1400. And so

  1401. as Paul

  1402. is quoting

  1403. here in

  1404. the Old

  1405. Testament,

  1406. he's showing

  1407. the seriousness

  1408. of it.

  1409. This affects

  1410. every one

  1411. of us.

  1412. Cursed

  1413. be everyone

  1414. who does

  1415. not abide

  1416. by all the

  1417. things written

  1418. in the book

  1419. of the law.

  1420. This is how

  1421. serious it was

  1422. for the Galatians.

  1423. This is how

  1424. serious it is

  1425. for ourselves.

  1426. We are all

  1427. sinners.

  1428. There is no

  1429. escape.

  1430. Now the law

  1431. is

  1432. important.

  1433. It reminds

  1434. us that

  1435. we cannot

  1436. fulfill

  1437. the law

  1438. of God.

  1439. A preacher

  1440. once used

  1441. two images

  1442. to describe

  1443. the purpose

  1444. of the

  1445. law.

  1446. The first

  1447. was this.

  1448. He said

  1449. he likened

  1450. it to

  1451. the dentist's

  1452. little mirror

  1453. which he

  1454. sticks into

  1455. the patient's

  1456. mouth.

  1457. The mirror

  1458. is able

  1459. to help

  1460. the dentist

  1461. detect

  1462. where there's

  1463. something wrong

  1464. with a tooth,

  1465. where there's

  1466. a cavity

  1467. that needs

  1468. filled.

  1469. But he

  1470. doesn't

  1471. drill with

  1472. the mirror.

  1473. He doesn't

  1474. use the

  1475. mirror to

  1476. pull out

  1477. teeth.

  1478. It can't

  1479. provide the

  1480. solution.

  1481. The second

  1482. way was this.

  1483. He said

  1484. he likened

  1485. the law

  1486. to a

  1487. plumb line

  1488. that a

  1489. builder

  1490. uses.

  1491. When a

  1492. builder is

  1493. building and

  1494. he wants

  1495. to check

  1496. that everything

  1497. is on the

  1498. level,

  1499. on the

  1500. straight,

  1501. he uses

  1502. a plumb

  1503. line.

  1504. And if

  1505. the plumb

  1506. line highlights

  1507. that there's

  1508. a fault,

  1509. it's not

  1510. going to

  1511. help

  1512. correct it

  1513. because he

  1514. has to

  1515. get other

  1516. tools out.

  1517. He has to

  1518. get the

  1519. hammer and

  1520. the saw

  1521. out to

  1522. correct it.

  1523. And he's

  1524. saying this

  1525. is what

  1526. the law

  1527. is like.

  1528. The law

  1529. points out

  1530. the problem

  1531. of sin,

  1532. but it

  1533. doesn't

  1534. provide

  1535. a solution

  1536. because we

  1537. cannot fully

  1538. keep the

  1539. law.

  1540. If we are

  1541. only under

  1542. the law,

  1543. we are

  1544. slaves and

  1545. bound to

  1546. that and

  1547. all the

  1548. consequences

  1549. of it.

  1550. So if we

  1551. fail in

  1552. one aspect

  1553. of the

  1554. law,

  1555. we are

  1556. cursed,

  1557. we are

  1558. doomed.

  1559. And so

  1560. Paul is

  1561. highlighting

  1562. that for

  1563. us.

  1564. We cannot

  1565. possibly do

  1566. it.

  1567. What a

  1568. message to

  1569. bring to

  1570. the people,

  1571. to try and

  1572. bring them

  1573. back to

  1574. their senses.

  1575. It's a bit

  1576. like Private

  1577. Fraser and

  1578. Dad's Army

  1579. as Paul

  1580. is saying

  1581. all of

  1582. this to

  1583. them.

  1584. People are

  1585. thinking,

  1586. well,

  1587. we're doomed.

  1588. There's

  1589. nothing that

  1590. we can do

  1591. here.

  1592. And if

  1593. Paul's

  1594. message

  1595. ended

  1596. there,

  1597. we too

  1598. would feel

  1599. that sense

  1600. of doom.

  1601. There's

  1602. nothing that

  1603. we can do

  1604. ourselves.

  1605. So what

  1606. hope do

  1607. we have?

  1608. Well,

  1609. the great

  1610. thing is

  1611. that there

  1612. is a

  1613. cure.

  1614. That there

  1615. is a cure

  1616. here.

  1617. You see,

  1618. Paul doesn't

  1619. stop there.

  1620. The whole

  1621. purpose he

  1622. is writing

  1623. to the

  1624. church at

  1625. Galatia is

  1626. this,

  1627. to show

  1628. them the

  1629. answer,

  1630. to show

  1631. them the

  1632. way.

  1633. Because it

  1634. doesn't end

  1635. there.

  1636. Paul goes

  1637. on to

  1638. show the

  1639. way back.

  1640. The

  1641. consequences

  1642. of erosion

  1643. is destruction.

  1644. But thanks

  1645. be to God

  1646. that he

  1647. has made

  1648. a provision.

  1649. As he

  1650. goes on

  1651. here,

  1652. he's

  1653. speaking

  1654. about

  1655. it's

  1656. evident

  1657. that no

  1658. one is

  1659. justified

  1660. before God

  1661. by the

  1662. law,

  1663. for the

  1664. righteous

  1665. shall

  1666. live

  1667. by faith.

  1668. And here

  1669. is the

  1670. foundation.

  1671. Here is

  1672. the guard

  1673. against the

  1674. erosion that

  1675. can so

  1676. easily set

  1677. in.

  1678. Just like

  1679. we see in

  1680. the coastal

  1681. barriers being

  1682. put in,

  1683. defenses being

  1684. set against

  1685. the effects

  1686. of erosion.

  1687. So we

  1688. have the

  1689. greatest

  1690. defense of

  1691. all,

  1692. the Lord

  1693. Jesus

  1694. Christ.

  1695. The

  1696. righteous

  1697. shall

  1698. live

  1699. by faith.

  1700. And he

  1701. goes on

  1702. then to

  1703. say in

  1704. verse 12,

  1705. but the

  1706. law is

  1707. not of

  1708. faith,

  1709. rather the

  1710. one who

  1711. does them

  1712. shall live

  1713. by them,

  1714. which we

  1715. cannot do,

  1716. but then

  1717. this Christ

  1718. redeemed

  1719. us from

  1720. the curse

  1721. of the

  1722. law by

  1723. becoming a

  1724. curse for

  1725. us.

  1726. The

  1727. wonder of

  1728. the grace

  1729. of God

  1730. that Christ

  1731. redeemed

  1732. us from

  1733. the curse

  1734. by becoming

  1735. a curse

  1736. for us.

  1737. How?

  1738. Well it

  1739. says,

  1740. for it is

  1741. written,

  1742. cursed is

  1743. everyone who

  1744. hanged on

  1745. a tree.

  1746. And that

  1747. is just

  1748. what Christ

  1749. has done.

  1750. We are

  1751. not justified

  1752. by our

  1753. works.

  1754. We are

  1755. not saved

  1756. by our

  1757. works.

  1758. We are

  1759. saved by

  1760. faith in

  1761. Christ who

  1762. redeems us

  1763. from the

  1764. curse of

  1765. the law.

  1766. We use

  1767. this word

  1768. redeem.

  1769. So often

  1770. in life

  1771. now when

  1772. we redeem

  1773. something,

  1774. a voucher,

  1775. we get

  1776. money off

  1777. something.

  1778. A price

  1779. is covered

  1780. for us.

  1781. But here

  1782. is the

  1783. greatest

  1784. price of

  1785. all.

  1786. And what

  1787. a price

  1788. has been

  1789. paid for

  1790. us.

  1791. So how

  1792. could we

  1793. ever think

  1794. that we

  1795. could do

  1796. anything to

  1797. satisfy or

  1798. guard ourselves

  1799. against this

  1800. curse that

  1801. we are

  1802. under.

  1803. Just again

  1804. going back

  1805. to the

  1806. end of

  1807. chapter 2,

  1808. we are

  1809. saying if

  1810. we could,

  1811. Christ died

  1812. for no

  1813. purpose.

  1814. But that

  1815. is not

  1816. true.

  1817. His purpose

  1818. was to

  1819. redeem

  1820. his people,

  1821. to purchase

  1822. his people

  1823. at the

  1824. greatest

  1825. price of

  1826. all.

  1827. Redemption

  1828. is through

  1829. Christ,

  1830. our

  1831. redeemer

  1832. who gave

  1833. his life

  1834. as a

  1835. ransom

  1836. for many.

  1837. Redemption

  1838. is spoken

  1839. of through

  1840. the

  1841. scriptures,

  1842. all the

  1843. way through.

  1844. The idea

  1845. of a

  1846. price being

  1847. paid is

  1848. there all

  1849. through.

  1850. And the

  1851. price ultimately

  1852. is this,

  1853. that Christ

  1854. died for

  1855. sinners.

  1856. He went

  1857. to the

  1858. cross.

  1859. we were

  1860. reminded of

  1861. it last

  1862. Sunday

  1863. morning when

  1864. the Reverend

  1865. Bill Ferguson

  1866. was with us.

  1867. He was

  1868. preaching from

  1869. Isaiah 43,

  1870. that wonderful

  1871. passage that

  1872. says at the

  1873. beginning,

  1874. fear not,

  1875. for I have

  1876. redeemed you.

  1877. I have

  1878. called you

  1879. by name,

  1880. you are

  1881. mine.

  1882. We were

  1883. reminded how

  1884. the Lord

  1885. never leaves

  1886. his people,

  1887. no matter

  1888. what they're

  1889. going through.

  1890. A price

  1891. is paid

  1892. for them,

  1893. the greatest

  1894. price of

  1895. all.

  1896. Christ

  1897. redeemed us

  1898. from the

  1899. curse of

  1900. the law

  1901. by becoming

  1902. a curse

  1903. for us.

  1904. A young

  1905. boy,

  1906. he once

  1907. built himself

  1908. a little

  1909. boat,

  1910. many used

  1911. to do it

  1912. when you

  1913. were young,

  1914. making little

  1915. boats and

  1916. then putting

  1917. them out

  1918. in a river

  1919. and on a

  1920. loch.

  1921. This young

  1922. boy,

  1923. he'd made

  1924. himself a

  1925. little boat

  1926. and he

  1927. took it

  1928. along to

  1929. the river

  1930. one day

  1931. and set it

  1932. into the

  1933. river and

  1934. was letting

  1935. it out on

  1936. a string.

  1937. And he

  1938. sat back

  1939. and just

  1940. watched the

  1941. little boat

  1942. go out as

  1943. he was letting

  1944. his string

  1945. out and he

  1946. was admiring

  1947. it as it

  1948. was going

  1949. out but

  1950. then all

  1951. of a sudden

  1952. there was

  1953. a strong

  1954. current in

  1955. the river

  1956. that took

  1957. hold and

  1958. the boat

  1959. got caught

  1960. up in the

  1961. current and

  1962. as the

  1963. little boy

  1964. tried to

  1965. pull it

  1966. in on

  1967. the string,

  1968. the string

  1969. snapped.

  1970. And the

  1971. boy was

  1972. devastated.

  1973. He started

  1974. chasing after

  1975. this boat

  1976. going down

  1977. the river

  1978. after it

  1979. but the

  1980. boat was

  1981. going too

  1982. fast.

  1983. It was

  1984. being taken

  1985. away.

  1986. And he

  1987. just kept

  1988. going,

  1989. kept going,

  1990. trying to

  1991. catch up

  1992. with it but

  1993. it slipped

  1994. out of

  1995. sight,

  1996. carried on

  1997. searching until

  1998. it started

  1999. to get dark.

  2000. And to his

  2001. dismay,

  2002. he just

  2003. couldn't find

  2004. it.

  2005. He'd lost

  2006. his boat.

  2007. A few

  2008. days later

  2009. on his way

  2010. home from

  2011. school,

  2012. he was

  2013. passing by

  2014. a shop

  2015. and in

  2016. the shop

  2017. he noticed

  2018. this little

  2019. boat.

  2020. And he

  2021. said to

  2022. himself,

  2023. that boat

  2024. looks just

  2025. like mine.

  2026. And as he

  2027. went closer

  2028. and closer

  2029. he said to

  2030. himself,

  2031. it is

  2032. mine.

  2033. And so he

  2034. ran into

  2035. the shop

  2036. and he

  2037. said to

  2038. the man

  2039. at the

  2040. counter,

  2041. he says,

  2042. that's my

  2043. boat in

  2044. your window.

  2045. I made

  2046. it,

  2047. can I have

  2048. it back?

  2049. And the

  2050. man in

  2051. the shop

  2052. said,

  2053. no,

  2054. I'm

  2055. sorry,

  2056. someone

  2057. else

  2058. brought

  2059. that in.

  2060. If you

  2061. want it,

  2062. you're

  2063. going to

  2064. have to

  2065. buy it

  2066. back.

  2067. And the

  2068. man told

  2069. him how

  2070. much it

  2071. was going

  2072. to cost.

  2073. Now the

  2074. little boy

  2075. didn't have

  2076. any money

  2077. with him

  2078. at the

  2079. time,

  2080. but he

  2081. ran home

  2082. and saw

  2083. how much

  2084. money he

  2085. could get

  2086. together.

  2087. And he

  2088. was delighted

  2089. when he

  2090. found he

  2091. had enough

  2092. money.

  2093. And he

  2094. ran back

  2095. to the

  2096. shop,

  2097. he gave

  2098. the man

  2099. the money,

  2100. he got

  2101. his boat

  2102. back.

  2103. And as

  2104. he was

  2105. going out

  2106. of the

  2107. shop,

  2108. he said,

  2109. now you're

  2110. mine twice.

  2111. I made

  2112. you and

  2113. now I've

  2114. bought you.

  2115. And that's

  2116. a reminder

  2117. to us

  2118. of the

  2119. cost of

  2120. all that

  2121. Christ has

  2122. done for

  2123. us.

  2124. He made

  2125. us in

  2126. the first

  2127. place.

  2128. We belong

  2129. to him

  2130. and yet

  2131. in our

  2132. ignorance of

  2133. him we've

  2134. gone away.

  2135. we've

  2136. gone our

  2137. own way.

  2138. In our

  2139. sin we've

  2140. gone astray

  2141. from him.

  2142. And he

  2143. had to

  2144. come and

  2145. purchase us,

  2146. redeem us

  2147. with a

  2148. price.

  2149. And so

  2150. if you

  2151. think you're

  2152. not worth

  2153. much to

  2154. God,

  2155. if you

  2156. think you're

  2157. not important

  2158. to God,

  2159. or God

  2160. doesn't see

  2161. you as

  2162. important in

  2163. his eyes,

  2164. just like the

  2165. psalmist as

  2166. we're singing

  2167. in Psalm 77,

  2168. has God

  2169. forgotten

  2170. us?

  2171. Will he

  2172. neglect

  2173. us?

  2174. Do you

  2175. feel that

  2176. tonight?

  2177. Do you

  2178. feel this

  2179. distance with

  2180. God that

  2181. perhaps he's

  2182. not concerned

  2183. for you?

  2184. Or that you

  2185. have to make

  2186. it up to

  2187. God in

  2188. some way

  2189. by fully

  2190. keeping the

  2191. law and

  2192. pleasing God

  2193. in that

  2194. way?

  2195. Well,

  2196. you don't.

  2197. You see,

  2198. we're

  2199. precious to

  2200. God.

  2201. He made

  2202. us and

  2203. he has

  2204. redeemed

  2205. us.

  2206. He has

  2207. paid a

  2208. price.

  2209. You don't

  2210. have to

  2211. earn his

  2212. favor through

  2213. works,

  2214. through any

  2215. works of

  2216. the law.

  2217. That's not

  2218. the way to

  2219. please God,

  2220. but to

  2221. come by

  2222. faith and

  2223. to believe

  2224. in the

  2225. Lord Jesus

  2226. Christ.

  2227. The

  2228. redeemed

  2229. of God

  2230. depend on

  2231. him.

  2232. Because the

  2233. erosion that

  2234. can so

  2235. easily come

  2236. in is

  2237. God doesn't

  2238. love me.

  2239. And we

  2240. turn away

  2241. from God

  2242. and we

  2243. let the

  2244. things of

  2245. this world

  2246. just eat

  2247. away at

  2248. us.

  2249. But the

  2250. greatest

  2251. barrier,

  2252. the greatest

  2253. defense

  2254. against

  2255. sliding away

  2256. from God

  2257. of being

  2258. cursed in

  2259. this world

  2260. and for

  2261. all eternity

  2262. is to

  2263. know the

  2264. barrier.

  2265. The erosion

  2266. barrier that

  2267. is faith,

  2268. in Christ.

  2269. Paul, as

  2270. he's speaking

  2271. to the

  2272. church of

  2273. Galatia and

  2274. to the

  2275. people there,

  2276. he's saying

  2277. the law

  2278. will not

  2279. help.

  2280. You're

  2281. cursed.

  2282. Even if you

  2283. fail on

  2284. one point,

  2285. you're

  2286. cursed.

  2287. But he

  2288. says,

  2289. thanks be to

  2290. God,

  2291. Christ

  2292. redeemed

  2293. us from

  2294. the curse

  2295. of the law

  2296. by becoming

  2297. a curse

  2298. for us.

  2299. He has

  2300. done it.

  2301. He has

  2302. paid the

  2303. price.

  2304. And what

  2305. he wants

  2306. of us

  2307. now is

  2308. not to

  2309. say,

  2310. I can

  2311. do the

  2312. law

  2313. myself,

  2314. because in

  2315. that we're

  2316. saying,

  2317. Christ died

  2318. for no

  2319. purpose at

  2320. all.

  2321. but to

  2322. see Christ

  2323. died for

  2324. me as

  2325. sinner,

  2326. that I

  2327. might through

  2328. faith in

  2329. him live

  2330. and know

  2331. his blessing

  2332. as one

  2333. of his

  2334. redeemed

  2335. and rejoice

  2336. in him.

  2337. So the

  2338. question is,

  2339. how are

  2340. you living

  2341. your life

  2342. tonight?

  2343. Are you

  2344. living as

  2345. one who

  2346. feels the

  2347. only way to

  2348. please God

  2349. is by what

  2350. we do,

  2351. forget it.

  2352. You'll

  2353. never

  2354. please him.

  2355. Or are

  2356. we living

  2357. as Christ's

  2358. redeemed,

  2359. realizing

  2360. that he

  2361. has paid

  2362. the price,

  2363. he hung

  2364. on the

  2365. tree,

  2366. he was

  2367. cursed,

  2368. he bore

  2369. it all

  2370. that our

  2371. sins

  2372. deserved,

  2373. that we

  2374. might be

  2375. set free

  2376. through

  2377. him.

  2378. How

  2379. are we

  2380. living?

  2381. Surely

  2382. it is

  2383. to be

  2384. redeemed

  2385. by faith

  2386. in Christ

  2387. Jesus.

  2388. Let us

  2389. pray.

  2390. Our

  2391. Father in

  2392. heaven,

  2393. we do

  2394. thank you

  2395. for all

  2396. that you

  2397. have done

  2398. for us.

  2399. We know

  2400. there is

  2401. nothing we

  2402. can do

  2403. of ourselves,

  2404. although we

  2405. seek to

  2406. please you

  2407. in so

  2408. many ways.

  2409. We seek

  2410. to do

  2411. good for

  2412. you,

  2413. and that

  2414. is right

  2415. for us,

  2416. for you

  2417. have been

  2418. good to

  2419. us,

  2420. and you

  2421. ask us

  2422. to be

  2423. your

  2424. servants

  2425. in this

  2426. world.

  2427. You

  2428. have

  2429. prepared

  2430. us

  2431. for

  2432. works

  2433. in many

  2434. ways,

  2435. but help

  2436. us to

  2437. realize that

  2438. all of our

  2439. works are

  2440. not to

  2441. please you

  2442. in any

  2443. way that

  2444. would gain

  2445. our salvation

  2446. in any

  2447. way,

  2448. but to

  2449. realize that

  2450. we do

  2451. it because

  2452. you have

  2453. loved us

  2454. and given

  2455. yourself for

  2456. us,

  2457. and that

  2458. the way to

  2459. salvation is

  2460. not through

  2461. our own

  2462. endeavors,

  2463. but through

  2464. faith in

  2465. Christ Jesus

  2466. our Lord.

  2467. Lord,

  2468. and so we

  2469. pray that

  2470. you will

  2471. encourage us

  2472. in our

  2473. faith,

  2474. that you

  2475. will help

  2476. us to

  2477. see the

  2478. price that

  2479. has been

  2480. paid and

  2481. how precious

  2482. we are to

  2483. you,

  2484. that cursed

  2485. is the one

  2486. who hangs

  2487. on the

  2488. tree,

  2489. and we

  2490. thank you

  2491. that Christ

  2492. redeemed us

  2493. from the

  2494. curse by

  2495. becoming a

  2496. curse for

  2497. us.

  2498. So we

  2499. encourage us

  2500. Lord we

  2501. pray and

  2502. build us

  2503. up in our

  2504. faith,

  2505. we ask it

  2506. all in

  2507. Jesus name,

  2508. Amen.

  2509. We're

  2510. going to

  2511. conclude by

  2512. singing to

  2513. God's

  2514. praise in

  2515. Psalm 61,

  2516. the Scottish

  2517. Psalter

  2518. version.

  2519. Realize we

  2520. had it this

  2521. morning as

  2522. well, it

  2523. was to sing

  2524. Psalms version

  2525. this morning,

  2526. but we'll sing

  2527. again in the

  2528. Scottish

  2529. Psalter,

  2530. verse 1 to

  2531. verse 3,

  2532. the tune of

  2533. Salzburg,

  2534. O God

  2535. give ear unto

  2536. my cry,

  2537. and to my

  2538. prayer attend,

  2539. in the

  2540. utmost corner

  2541. of the

  2542. land,

  2543. my cry,

  2544. to thee

  2545. I'll send.

  2546. We'll sing

  2547. from verse 1

  2548. to 3,

  2549. to God's

  2550. praise.

  2551. Amen.

  2552. O God

  2553. give ear

  2554. sorry,

  2555. O God

  2556. give ear

  2557. unto

  2558. my

  2559. cry,

  2560. unto

  2561. my

  2562. prayer

  2563. attend,

  2564. from the

  2565. earth

  2566. most

  2567. corner

  2568. of the

  2569. land,

  2570. my

  2571. cry

  2572. to thee

  2573. I'll send.

  2574. what

  2575. time

  2576. my

  2577. heart

  2578. is

  2579. overwhelmed

  2580. and in

  2581. perplexity

  2582. do thou

  2583. me

  2584. lead

  2585. unto

  2586. the

  2587. rock

  2588. that

  2589. that

  2590. higher

  2591. is

  2592. than

  2593. I

  2594. for

  2595. thou

  2596. hast

  2597. for

  2598. I

  2599. refuse

  2600. me

  2601. a

  2602. shelter

  2603. by

  2604. thy

  2605. blood

  2606. and

  2607. forgiven

  2608. against

  2609. my

  2610. foes

  2611. thou

  2612. hast

  2613. been

  2614. a

  2615. strong

  2616. turn

  2617. after

  2618. the

  2619. benediction

  2620. I'll go

  2621. to the

  2622. door

  2623. to my

  2624. right

  2625. we'll

  2626. close

  2627. with

  2628. the

  2629. benediction

  2630. now may

  2631. grace

  2632. mercy

  2633. and peace

  2634. from

  2635. God

  2636. Father

  2637. Son

  2638. and

  2639. Holy

  2640. Spirit

  2641. rest

  2642. upon

  2643. and

  2644. abide

  2645. with

  2646. you

  2647. all

  2648. now

  2649. and

  2650. forever

  2651. more

  2652. Amen

  2653. from
