  1. Let us join our hearts together in praising God

  2. by singing to His praise from Psalm 93 of the Sing Psalms version of the Blue Book.

  3. Psalm 93, Sing Psalms, you'll find that on page 1, 2, 3 of the Blue Book.

  4. We'll sing from the beginning of that psalm, we'll sing the whole psalm.

  5. The Lord is King, His throne endures majestic in His height.

  6. The Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength and might.

  7. The world is founded firm and sure, removed it cannot be.

  8. Your throne is strong and You are God from all eternity.

  9. The seas, O Lord, have lifted up, they lifted up their voice.

  10. The seas have lifted up their waves and made a mighty noise.

  11. The Lord enthroned on high is strong, more powerful is He

  12. than thunder of the ocean's waves or breakers of the sea.

  13. Your royal statues, Lord, stand firm.

  14. Unchanging is Your Word and holiness adorns Your house

  15. for endless days, O Lord.

  16. We'll stand together and sing these verses to God's praise.

  17. The Lord is King.

  18. The Lord is King.

  19. The Lord is King.

  20. The heart is king, his throne endures,

  21. a chest in his height.

  22. The Lord is full in majesty,

  23. an arm with strength and light.

  24. The world is found in firm and sure,

  25. we would it have a be.

  26. Your throne is strong,

  27. and you are God of all eternity.

  28. The seas, O Lord, have lifted up,

  29. lifted up their voice.

  30. The seas have lifted up their weight,

  31. and made a mighty voice.

  32. The Lord, in throne of highest,

  33. strong or powerful is he,

  34. that land that all the oceans wave,

  35. are raiders of the sea.

  36. Your voice, O Lord, have lifted up,

  37. and heard of changing his pure word,

  38. and holyness,

  39. and Lord to rise,

  40. O'er the saints, O Lord.

  41. May we draw near to God in prayer.

  42. Let us bow in prayer.

  43. Our Father in heaven,

  44. as we come to you in this evening hour on your day,

  45. we pray that we would direct our minds and our hearts

  46. towards you and your word,

  47. and that we would have a focus upon what is set before us,

  48. and the beauty and wonder of your unchanging word,

  49. and in it may we see the unchanging promises of God,

  50. that we can take hold of,

  51. and embrace within our hearts,

  52. and we can lay hold of your word,

  53. as one that is a sure foundation for our souls,

  54. and that when we look at the world around us,

  55. and the changeableness of it,

  56. and the uncertainty of it,

  57. we then see the reassurance that we have,

  58. and the certainty and trusting in you.

  59. Let our minds be heavenward,

  60. and let us consider who you are,

  61. who you are as God,

  62. and Christ as our King,

  63. and we think on that kingship that is set before us,

  64. that will endure forever,

  65. and that we would love and abide,

  66. expecting to be received into the kingdom of God,

  67. and the kingdom of heaven.

  68. May your kingdom come,

  69. and may you gather all your people,

  70. in your due time,

  71. according to your ways,

  72. mysterious to our understanding.

  73. We pray that your spirit would be at work,

  74. within the hearts of us this night,

  75. and the desires of our heart would be towards you,

  76. and to know you,

  77. and you would reveal yourself to us in a greater sense than ever before,

  78. and that we may behold you with reverence and awe in our hearts,

  79. and consider all that we are receivers of through Christ Jesus.

  80. We thank you for all we have through him,

  81. and that he such so loved us,

  82. that he would go to the cross and die for us,

  83. and yet he gives us a great hope and assurance,

  84. for he did not remain in the grave,

  85. but ascended into heaven.

  86. And there he is preparing a place for his people,

  87. who trust in him and have faith in him.

  88. May we be those people that draw near to you,

  89. and cast aside all other loves of our hearts that we see in this world.

  90. And may the love of Christ Jesus grow and flourish,

  91. the seeds that is planted within us,

  92. abundantly grow and bear fruit in each of our lives,

  93. and as a church united.

  94. And the great phrase of Hebrews where he says,

  95. let us, may we rejoice together

  96. in that provision and inheritance

  97. that the Christian receives in Christ.

  98. We pray this night

  99. for the work that we do in this congregation.

  100. Varied and different people in whom we meet,

  101. we remember the work that the cruise ships

  102. that Martin Walker leads.

  103. We pray the blessing upon that

  104. as visitors come into this building

  105. and see the simplicity of it.

  106. May the word be highlighted and set before them,

  107. that they may see within those who speak with them

  108. the beauty of Christ Jesus.

  109. We pray for the Sunday school.

  110. We pray that a time of rest for the teachers in that.

  111. We remember Twinnies.

  112. We remember the team in Cresce.

  113. We pray for David Chisholm

  114. and his working road to recovery.

  115. And we pray over those who are suffering with addictions.

  116. That you would draw them from these things

  117. that bind them

  118. and that you would set them free.

  119. Lord, we pray for those who visit

  120. and that we would be mindful of those

  121. who are at home,

  122. even listening to us this night.

  123. That they too are part of us

  124. and are joined with us in worshipping you.

  125. Pray that we would be mindful of them.

  126. And that we would give that great consideration

  127. of each other

  128. and have that great concern for one another

  129. and how to stir up each other

  130. to love and good works.

  131. And yet,

  132. as we have that concern for one another,

  133. may that concern be also set within our hearts

  134. for those who are lost.

  135. And those who do not know of the glorious

  136. and immeasurable riches

  137. that they can receive in Christ Jesus.

  138. We pray

  139. that you would guide us in wisdom.

  140. That the words that we speak

  141. would be as fresh as a flowing stream

  142. and to those who do not know you.

  143. And speak to their hearts and souls.

  144. And may they see within the hearts of the believer

  145. a reassured hope and confidence

  146. in what they believe.

  147. Though trialed and afflicted in many ways,

  148. they stand firm upon the rock

  149. that is Jesus Christ and his promises.

  150. We pray

  151. for those who are afflicted.

  152. We pray

  153. for those who are suffering.

  154. We pray

  155. for those who are laid aside

  156. in illness.

  157. We pray

  158. that you would comfort them

  159. and be with them.

  160. We also acknowledge

  161. the anxieties

  162. people have

  163. in awaiting

  164. procedures in hospital.

  165. We pray

  166. also for them.

  167. That you would give them

  168. your peace

  169. and reassurance.

  170. That they would come

  171. and trust in you.

  172. Lord,

  173. we just pray

  174. that we

  175. would be

  176. living

  177. lights

  178. that go about

  179. in a dark world

  180. setting forth

  181. the beauty

  182. of Christ

  183. and illuminating

  184. that great

  185. pressure

  186. and riches

  187. of his word.

  188. Be with us.

  189. We pray

  190. in our time

  191. together

  192. as we come

  193. and consider

  194. what we are

  195. receivers of

  196. by being part

  197. of the kingdom

  198. of heaven.

  199. Be with us

  200. in minds

  201. our thoughts

  202. bodies

  203. and souls

  204. so that we

  205. would not be

  206. distracted

  207. nor turn away

  208. from your word.

  209. Help us

  210. to have that

  211. focus

  212. upon you

  213. a heavenward

  214. focus.

  215. May you

  216. grant us

  217. your blessing.

  218. May your spirit

  219. be your guide

  220. in these things

  221. and these matters.

  222. May your word

  223. be to us

  224. greatest treasure

  225. of all

  226. sweeter than honey

  227. and richer than gold.

  228. So be with us

  229. in our worship

  230. of you

  231. and all this

  232. we ask

  233. in the confession

  234. and forgiveness

  235. of our sins

  236. we ask

  237. in Jesus' name.

  238. Amen.

  239. I would like us

  240. to turn

  241. to your Bibles

  242. for our reading

  243. and we'll find

  244. that first reading

  245. in Exodus

    Exodus 19 chapter mention

  246. chapter 19.

  247. Exodus

    Exodus 19 chapter mention

  248. chapter 19.

  249. We'll break up

  250. our readings

  251. we'll read in Exodus

  252. and then afterwards

  253. we'll read in Hebrews

  254. after us singing.

  255. Exodus

    Exodus 19 chapter mention

  256. chapter 19.

  257. I'm reading

  258. at verse 7.

  259. This is Israel

  260. at Mount Sinai

  261. and Moses

  262. being called

  263. to meet

  264. with God.

  265. Let us hear

  266. God's word.

  267. So Moses

  268. came and called

  269. the elders

  270. of the people

  271. and set

  272. before them

  273. all these words

  274. that the Lord

  275. had commanded him

  276. and the people

  277. answered together

  278. and said

  279. all that the Lord

  280. has spoken

  281. we will do.

  282. And Moses

  283. reported the words

  284. of the people

  285. to the Lord

  286. and the Lord

  287. said to Moses

  288. behold

  289. I am coming

  290. to you

  291. in a thick cloud

  292. that the people

  293. may hear

  294. when I speak

  295. with you

  296. and may also

  297. believe you

  298. forever.

  299. When Moses

  300. told the words

  301. of the people

  302. to the Lord

  303. the Lord

  304. said to Moses

  305. go to the people

  306. and consecrate them

  307. today and tomorrow

  308. and let them

  309. wash their garments

  310. and be ready

  311. for the third day

  312. for on the third day

  313. the Lord

  314. will come down

  315. on Mount Sinai

  316. in the sight

  317. of all the people

  318. and you shall

  319. set limits

  320. for the people

  321. all around

  322. saying

  323. take care

  324. not to go

  325. into the mountain

  326. or touch

  327. the edge of it

  328. whoever touches

  329. the mountain

  330. shall be put

  331. to death

  332. no hand

  333. shall touch him

  334. but he shall

  335. be stoned

  336. or shot

  337. whether beast

  338. or man

  339. he shall

  340. not live

  341. when the trumpet

  342. sounds

  343. a long blast

  344. they shall

  345. come up

  346. to the mountain

  347. so Moses

  348. went down

  349. from the mountain

  350. to the people

  351. and consecrated

  352. the people

  353. and they washed

  354. their garments

  355. and he said

  356. to the people

  357. be ready

  358. for the third day

  359. do not go near

  360. a woman

  361. on the morning

  362. of the third day

  363. there were thunder

  364. and lightnings

  365. and a thick cloud

  366. on the mountain

  367. and a very loud

  368. trumpet blast

  369. so that all the people

  370. in the camp

  371. trembled

  372. then Moses

  373. brought the people

  374. out of the camp

  375. to meet God

  376. and they took

  377. their stand

  378. at the foot

  379. of the mountain

  380. now Mount Sinai

  381. was wrapped

  382. in smoke

  383. because the Lord

  384. had descended

  385. on it in fire

  386. the smoke

  387. of it went up

  388. like the smoke

  389. of Achilles

  390. and the whole

  391. mountain

  392. trembled

  393. greatly

  394. and as the sound

  395. of the trumpet

  396. grew louder

  397. and louder

  398. Moses spoke

  399. and God

  400. answered him

  401. in the thunder

  402. the Lord

  403. came down

  404. on Mount Sinai

  405. to the top

  406. of the mountain

  407. and the Lord

  408. called Moses

  409. to the top

  410. of the mountain

  411. and Moses

  412. went up

  413. and the Lord

  414. said to Moses

  415. go down

  416. and warn the people

  417. lest they break

  418. through to the Lord

  419. to look

  420. and many of them

  421. perish

  422. also let the priests

  423. who come near

  424. the Lord

  425. consecrate themselves

  426. lest the Lord

  427. break out

  428. against them

  429. and Moses

  430. said to the Lord

  431. the people

  432. cannot

  433. come up

  434. to Mount Sinai

  435. for you

  436. yourself

  437. warned us

  438. saying

  439. set limits

  440. around the mountain

  441. and consecrate it

  442. and the Lord

  443. said to him

  444. go down

  445. and come up

  446. bringing Aaron

  447. with you

  448. but do not

  449. let the priests

  450. and the people

  451. break through

  452. to come up

  453. to the Lord

  454. lest he break out

  455. against them

  456. so Moses

  457. went down

  458. to the people

  459. and told them

  460. Amen

  461. I'll continue

  462. in our praise

  463. of God

  464. by singing

  465. there in Psalm 110

  466. of the Scottish

  467. Psalter version

  468. find that

  469. on page 390

  470. Psalm 110

  471. Scottish

  472. Psalter version

  473. page 390

  474. we sing

  475. from the beginning

  476. of that Psalm

  477. down to the end

  478. of verse Mark 5

  479. the Lord

  480. the Lord

  481. did say unto

  482. my Lord

  483. sit thou

  484. at my right hand

  485. until I make

  486. thy force a stool

  487. where on thy feet

  488. may stand

  489. the Lord

  490. shall out of Zion

  491. send

  492. thy rod

  493. of thy great power

  494. in midst of all

  495. thy enemies

  496. be thou

  497. the governor

  498. down to verse 5

  499. the glorious

  500. and mighty Lord

  501. that sits

  502. at thy right hand

  503. shall in this

  504. his day

  505. of wrath

  506. strike through

  507. kings

  508. that do

  509. whom

  510. withstand

  511. we'll stand

  512. and sing

  513. these words

  514. together

  515. the Lord

  516. did say

  517. unto my Lord

  518. sit thou

  519. at my right hand

  520. this

  521. unto

  522. とう

  523. asters

  524. my Lord

  525. serve

  526. high

  527. anto

  528. to

  529. shall

  530. on

  531. return

  532. and

  533. till

  534. I

  535. af

  536. Thy boat's astool, where not thy feet they stand?

  537. The heart shall have the sky ascend,

  538. where shore the life

  539. is heard.

  540. Amen.

  541. Amen.

  542. Amen.

  543. Amen.

  544. Amen.

  545. Amen.

  546. Amen.

  547. Amen.

  548. Amen.

  549. Amen.

  550. Amen.

  551. Amen.

  552. Amen.

  553. We turn now to our Bibles in the second portion of

  554. reading from Scripture in the book of Hebrews, Hebrews chapter 12.

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  555. We'll read there at verse 18.

  556. Hebrews chapter 12, verse 18.

    Hebrews 12:18

  557. For you have not come to what may be touched, a blazing fire and darkness and gloom, and

  558. a tempest and the sound of a trumpet, and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that

  559. no further messages be spoken to them.

  560. For they could not endure the order that was given.

  561. If even a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned.

  562. Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, I tremble with fear.

  563. But you have come, rather, to Mount Zion, and to the city of the living God, the heavenly

  564. Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the first-born

  565. who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous

  566. made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood

  567. that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

  568. See that you do not refuse him who is speaking.

  569. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will

  570. we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven.

  571. At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, yet once more I will shake

  572. not only the earth, but also the heavens.

  573. This phrase, yet once more, indicates the removal of things that are shaken, that is, things that

  574. have been made, in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain.

  575. Therefore, let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let

  576. us offer to God acceptable worship with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.

  577. Amen.

  578. May the reading of God's word be blessed to us as always.

  579. Amen.

  580. We continue in our praise to God before considering this passage, and we'll do so in Psalm 48a of

  581. the Sing Psalms Version.

  582. You'll find that on page 63 of the Blue Book.

  583. We'll also conclude with this psalm after our considerations of Scripture, if you just might

  584. want to keep that page.

  585. We'll sing the whole psalm over them two singings.

  586. Our first singing will take us down to verse marked 8.

  587. Psalm 48a.

  588. Sing down to verse marked 8.

  589. as we have heard, so we have seen, God's city will endure.

  590. The Lord Almighty evermore, his city keeps secure.

  591. A psalm that speaks of the security of Mount Zion

  592. and the king's great city that will endure forever.

  593. May we stand and sing these verses.

  594. Great is the Lord who rules on high, with praise his temple full.

  595. The Lord who rules on high, with praise his temple full.

  596. Within the city of our God and on his holy hill.

  597. Thanks, I long with his graceful heart, his joy to all the earth.

  598. The great is the Lord who rules on high, with praise his temple full.

  599. Within her city of our God and on his holy hill.

  600. God's presence is revealed.

  601. For he has told himself to be a fortress of mercy.

  602. God's presence is revealed.

  603. When kings join forces to attack,

  604. As one they march away.

  605. They saw her and they wear a mist.

  606. They all in terror play.

  607. Like women giving burdened pain,

  608. They tremble in his shame.

  609. You wrecked them like a merchant tree,

  610. By temples and stone away.

  611. But we are so happy seeing,

  612. God's city will endure.

  613. The Lord almighty evermore.

  614. His city is secure.

  615. Amen.

  616. I'll come now and consider the words from the book of Hebrews.

  617. And for our text tonight,

  618. Read there at verse 28.

  619. Therefore, let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken.

  620. And thus, let us offer to God acceptable worship with reverence and awe.

  621. For our God is a consuming fire.

  622. Over the last few weeks,

  623. We have looked at some of the great Bible similes that we find in the Bible.

  624. And although we don't have one set before us tonight,

  625. In the morning we consider what the kingdom of heaven was like,

  626. As Jesus spoke of in the parables.

  627. And we consider what was the kingdom.

  628. And how that kingdom was all set in place by the gathering of the people.

  629. And how that kingdom would come in the gathering of the people.

  630. And I thought that this section here that speaks of a kingdom that cannot be shaken,

  631. Would be a fitting conclusion to these Bible similes.

  632. And I've tied them all together.

  633. The outworking of Christ's kingdom.

  634. And the gathering of the people as we considered in the morning.

  635. And the riches of it.

  636. We looked at and considered.

  637. And tonight I really want to give our minds to the greatness of that kingdom.

  638. That it is sure and steadfast like the man who built his house on the rock.

  639. It is a place where the king's blessing pours down,

  640. Like the oil on Aaron's head and the dew of Mount Hermon.

  641. It is a place where the people in the kingdom of heaven are washed whiter than snow.

  642. And it is a place where the gathering of that kingdom rejoice in saying together,

  643. Let us.

  644. The greatness of Christ's kingdom is set before us in this passage.

  645. As a great provision and a great inheritance that we receive.

  646. But is it so great to you as you consider it,

  647. That you are stirred to that thankfulness spoken in verse 28,

  648. With a gratefulness in your heart,

  649. For receiving such a kingdom that cannot be shaken.

  650. And is this thought on this great kingdom so wondrous to you,

  651. That you cannot but draw near to him in worship with reverence and awe.

  652. If we do, that's great.

  653. But if not, then we have all the more reason to consider how great this kingdom is,

  654. So that we too would be stirred in such a way.

  655. That we are called by the king to come into this kingdom and receive the king's favour.

  656. I pray that each of us would be found in the kingdom of heaven.

  657. And this kingdom here is represented by two mountains from our passage.

  658. One greater than the other.

  659. And in the final section from verse 25.

  660. There is a comparison made between two kingdoms.

  661. The kingdom of the world that will be shaken and the kingdom of God that will stand forever.

  662. So let us give our mind to those differences that are set before us.

  663. Of two parts, considering two mountains,

  664. And considering the greater mountain.

  665. And considering the greater kingdom.

  666. So let's look at the greater mountain that is set before us.

  667. It says there in verse 18.

  668. For you have not come to what may be touched a blazing fire, darkness and gloom, and a tempest,

  669. And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice whose words made the hearer beg that no further messages would be spoken to them.

  670. For they could not endure the order that was given.

  671. If even a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned.

  672. And so on.

  673. Oh, this passage takes us back to Mount Sinai.

  674. And the section that we read there in Exodus together.

  675. But there is a contrast set before Mount Sinai.

  676. With Mount Zion.

  677. You'll see that in verse 22.

  678. Whereas we come to the Mount Sinai at first in verse 18.

  679. In verse 22, the writer of the Hebrews says,

  680. But you have come to Mount Zion.

  681. There are two mountains set before us.

  682. And if we consider Mount Sinai.

  683. And God's almighty approach that he made to his people there.

  684. And the representative Moses going on behalf of them to meet with God.

  685. God asked for their preparation.

  686. To consecrate themselves.

  687. To wash themselves.

  688. And we read that they came with fear and trembling.

  689. In verse 16 of that chapter.

  690. And as we read through the descriptions of all that happened on Mount Sinai.

  691. We kind of get a picture.

  692. But we don't grasp really the effect of what was going on at that time.

  693. The fear of anyone going near the mountain.

  694. God commanded that they should be stoned or shot.

  695. They were to die.

  696. They were to die.

  697. Man or beast.

  698. They were to stay back.

  699. Until the trumpet sounded.

  700. Then they could draw closer.

  701. But even only so far.

  702. For Moses had to go back.

  703. And restrain them.

  704. From drawing into the presence of God.

  705. They could not endure.

  706. The order that was given.

  707. To draw near to God.

  708. And to come to him.

  709. And we could see that.

  710. When we consider this Old Testament account.

  711. We see in it the great display of God's power.

  712. His might.

  713. His authority.

  714. Really emphasized at Mount Sinai.

  715. This is the obvious revealing of God's character at Sinai.

  716. Such that it produces within the heart of man.

  717. Fear and trembling.

  718. Even in the heart of Moses.

  719. Verse 21.

  720. Yet under this great display of fear.

  721. This great display of might and power.

  722. That provoked such fear.

  723. Underneath that.

  724. There is a loving, forgiving, patient and long-suffering God.

  725. It's not obvious to us.

  726. But we don't even need to leave Mount Sinai to see it.

  727. For if you remember.

  728. While Moses was up on that mountain.

  729. The people of God were building a golden calf.

  730. And making an idol of that calf.

  731. God did not destroy them for such an action.

  732. But God in his patience, forgiveness, long-suffering.

  733. With the people that were so stiff-necked.

  734. He allowed them to be builders of the tabernacle.

  735. Where he would come and dwell with them.

  736. Although when we consider Sinai.

  737. The might and power of God.

  738. Is really set before us.

  739. And the writer is saying there in verse 18.

  740. We have not come to a place like that.

  741. We have not come to the place of things that may be touched.

  742. We have come to far superior things than Mount Sinai.

  743. The Hebrew writer is saying this is the way things were in the old covenant.

  744. In the old ways.

  745. But now consider the ways that we have now.

  746. And the riches of it.

  747. You have come to Mount Zion.

  748. Mount Zion, a mountain that represented the presence of God.

  749. Before Jerusalem.

  750. Mount Zion's mountain stood over Jerusalem.

  751. And it was considered as that seat and throne of God.

  752. That watched over his precious people of Jerusalem.

  753. As we saw in Psalm 133.

  754. And from that throne.

  755. The blessings of God poured down.

  756. And yet it is to this mountain that we come, Mount Zion, not to a place where we are arrested by the fear and terror of God,

  757. but where the immeasurable riches of this king pour down upon his people by the one that went before us,

  758. by our representative, by the blood of Christ, we receive spiritual treasure of surpassing value in the kingdom of heaven that is set before us.

  759. Mount Zion, in a sense, reverses the emphasis of Mount Sinai.

  760. Love is emphasized and not wrath.

  761. The new covenant and the new ways openly display the love of God in the giving of his son at Calvary.

  762. And yet under that great display of love, and no greater display of love can anyone make than to give their life.

  763. Underneath that is the power and might of God, the sovereignty of God.

  764. And you can see, well, on both mountains, there is a God which loves us and is patient and long-suffering with us,

  765. but also a God that causes fear and trembling in our heart.

  766. Such is God, such is God, and such he will be.

  767. We are not to pluck God's attributes as we see fit.

  768. For if we do that, we lose the character of God.

  769. And it will directly influence how we draw near to him and how we worship him.

  770. And if we consider the riches of Mount Zion,

  771. look there what we read of about this mountain in verse 22.

  772. It is so rich of what we receive.

  773. But you have come to Mount Zion,

  774. and to the city of the living God,

  775. the heavenly Jerusalem,

  776. to the innumerable angels and festal gathering,

  777. and to the assembly of the firstborn who are ruled in heaven,

  778. and to God, the judge of all,

  779. and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,

  780. and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant,

  781. and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

  782. The writer's building upon himself as he speaks about this kingdom,

  783. about this heavenly kingdom that has been prepared for us.

  784. The privileges of it are set forth for us to consider.

  785. You can come to the city of the living God.

  786. You are not restricted from his dwelling place.

  787. You are not restricted like the people were in Mount Sinai,

  788. nor are you restricted like the people were by the curtain of the tabernacle.

  789. We have come into the city of the living God.

  790. We are welcomed into that city,

  791. not restrained,

  792. even to be with the innumerable angels in the worship of God,

  793. to that festal gathering.

  794. And that word to describe that gathering

  795. is a word that is not used anywhere else in Scripture,

  796. and maybe rightly so,

  797. for it is a gathering like no other.

  798. We are come to this adjoining with the innumerable angels

  799. in the worship of God

  800. as receivers of the kingdom of heaven.

  801. And you have come to be included in the assembly in heaven,

  802. enrolled in heaven,

  803. written with your name registered in this place.

  804. You have citizenship in this heavenly kingdom.

  805. Your name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life.

  806. And it is not just to the city,

  807. nor the angels,

  808. nor the assembly,

  809. but you have come unto God,

  810. the judge of all,

  811. and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect.

  812. For it is only those

  813. who are made perfect in righteousness,

  814. and the righteousness of Christ,

  815. that are judged as pure.

  816. Those who have washed their garments

  817. in the blood of Christ,

  818. made perfect in his righteousness,

  819. and it is to the one

  820. who gives us his righteousness

  821. that we also come.

  822. It says there,

  823. to Jesus,

  824. our Savior,

  825. our mediator,

  826. our representative,

  827. the one who went into the place

  828. where we could not go,

  829. nor the place where we could endure.

  830. He went to satisfy the justice of God

  831. by his unblemished,

  832. perfect sacrifice,

  833. so that we may enter

  834. into his presence

  835. by the blood that cleansed us

  836. from all our unrighteousness.

  837. and it is a blood spilt

  838. that speaks.

  839. And it speaks a better word

  840. than the blood of Abel.

  841. It says there in verse 24.

  842. Both men were killed unjustly.

  843. Both offered a willing sacrifice

  844. with blood.

  845. Abel brought a lamb

  846. as an offering,

  847. but also his own blood

  848. spoke,

  849. though separately.

  850. Christ's sacrifice

  851. and life is such

  852. that they are both his own.

  853. And while Abel's blood

  854. is a blood

  855. that spoke of vengeance

  856. against his offender,

  857. and a punishment

  858. that God made upon Cain

  859. that it says

  860. he could not bear,

  861. the wrath and curse of God

  862. that was so great for him,

  863. Christ's blood

  864. does not speak

  865. in such a way.

  866. Christ's blood

  867. speaks with forgiveness

  868. to those

  869. who have offended him.

  870. Christ's blood

  871. was so like that

  872. willing sacrifice offered.

  873. And it was such a sacrifice

  874. that was likewise

  875. received and regarded

  876. by God.

  877. And it was a sacrifice

  878. that bore the punishment

  879. that we could not bear.

  880. The blood of Christ

  881. is a far better word.

  882. And though Christ,

  883. and though through this blood

  884. and through Christ,

  885. we come to Mount Zion

  886. through this man.

  887. not in the old ways

  888. of Mount Zion

  889. with fear and trembling,

  890. but a new and living way

  891. is opened up for us.

  892. Unto the heavenly kingdom,

  893. unto the glory of God.

  894. The curtain that kept us back

  895. has been torn.

  896. The way has been opened

  897. by the blood of the Lamb,

  898. allowing us to go

  899. to the places

  900. where we are restricted

  901. from going

  902. into the presence of God.

  903. We enter into

  904. far superior things

  905. and far greater blessings

  906. as the people of God.

  907. We are so privileged

  908. to receive these things.

  909. It is like the words

  910. of Psalm 89.

  911. O greatly blessed

  912. the people are

  913. the joyful sound

  914. that know

  915. in brightness

  916. of thy face,

  917. O Lord,

  918. they ever on shall go.

  919. They in thy name

  920. shall all the day

  921. rejoice exceedingly

  922. and in thy righteousness

  923. they shall

  924. be exalted,

  925. exalted be on high.

  926. And it is to the heights

  927. of Zion

  928. that we will be exalted

  929. to be with God

  930. and to be in the presence

  931. of God

  932. for Christ has opened up

  933. the way

  934. to be in such a place.

  935. And it is a great kingdom

  936. that is set before

  937. the one who trusts in Christ.

  938. Verse 25

  939. makes a call

  940. to each of us.

  941. See that you do not

  942. refuse him

  943. who is speaking.

  944. For if they did not escape

  945. when they refused him

  946. who warned them on earth,

  947. much less will we escape

  948. if we reject him

  949. who warns from heaven.

  950. At that time

  951. his voice shook the earth,

  952. but now he has promised,

  953. yet once more

  954. I will shake

  955. not only the earth,

  956. but also the heavens.

  957. This phrase

  958. yet once more

  959. indicates the removal

  960. of things that are shaken,

  961. that is,

  962. the things that have been made

  963. in order that the things

  964. that cannot be shaken

  965. may remain.

  966. He's calling

  967. to each of us

  968. to understand

  969. what has been said here.

  970. That we do not

  971. reject

  972. the provision

  973. and inheritance

  974. that we have

  975. through Christ Jesus.

  976. the sacrifice

  977. for our sins.

  978. The king

  979. is asking you

  980. to come

  981. into his kingdom

  982. and receive

  983. these riches.

  984. Do you know

  985. the value

  986. of the treasure

  987. that is set

  988. before you tonight

  989. in his word?

  990. Here is a warning

  991. not to refuse it,

  992. for by the power

  993. that shook Sinai

  994. it says

  995. that he will also

  996. shake this world

  997. and destroy

  998. all things

  999. that have been made

  1000. so the things

  1001. that cannot be shaken

  1002. will remain.

  1003. The things

  1004. not made

  1005. with hands,

  1006. the things

  1007. that are eternal

  1008. in the heavens,

  1009. only what cannot

  1010. be shaken,

  1011. what God

  1012. has made

  1013. and provided

  1014. shall remain.

  1015. Mount Zion

  1016. will stand

  1017. forever.

  1018. This kingdom

  1019. is such

  1020. that it is

  1021. so secure

  1022. it will not

  1023. be shaken.

  1024. The kingdom

  1025. in which the believer

  1026. in Christ

  1027. is a part of

  1028. today

  1029. gives you

  1030. the greatest

  1031. security

  1032. for tomorrow.

  1033. For even

  1034. our lives

  1035. shall be shaken,

  1036. our bodies

  1037. shall be shaken,

  1038. and removed.

  1039. But the kingdom

  1040. of heaven

  1041. and those

  1042. who are part

  1043. of the kingdom

  1044. of heaven

  1045. and welcome

  1046. into the kingdom

  1047. of heaven

  1048. shall endure.

  1049. Is there an excuse

  1050. for those

  1051. who have heard

  1052. these things

  1053. of such

  1054. a provision

  1055. of wonder

  1056. that it is

  1057. made for those

  1058. through Christ

  1059. Jesus?

  1060. We are not

  1061. to come

  1062. with fear

  1063. and trembling.

  1064. We are to come

  1065. and rejoice

  1066. in all

  1067. that has been

  1068. done for us.

  1069. And as the trumpet

  1070. sounded at Mount

  1071. Sinai for the people

  1072. to come,

  1073. so the trumpet

  1074. sounds

  1075. tonight.

  1076. The gospel

  1077. has been

  1078. sounded

  1079. throughout

  1080. our land

  1081. and it has

  1082. been made

  1083. known

  1084. to the hearer

  1085. of it

  1086. and you

  1087. tonight

  1088. that it is

  1089. time

  1090. to come

  1091. and receive

  1092. these riches,

  1093. to receive

  1094. the blessing

  1095. and favour

  1096. of the King,

  1097. to come

  1098. to this

  1099. blessed

  1100. Mount

  1101. Zion.

  1102. let us

  1103. rejoice

  1104. as we

  1105. consider

  1106. the provision

  1107. that has been

  1108. made for us.

  1109. Where abundant

  1110. blessings flow

  1111. down to the

  1112. people,

  1113. the trumpet

  1114. sounds

  1115. the favour

  1116. of the King,

  1117. but yet

  1118. another

  1119. trumpet

  1120. shall sound,

  1121. a trumpet

  1122. that will

  1123. sound the

  1124. coming

  1125. of that

  1126. kingdom

  1127. and completeness.

  1128. as we pray

  1129. and call

  1130. for his

  1131. kingdom

  1132. to come,

  1133. a prayer

  1134. that will

  1135. with surety

  1136. be answered.

  1137. It's just

  1138. like the

  1139. parable of the

  1140. night that we

  1141. considered this

  1142. morning,

  1143. where those

  1144. will be

  1145. gathered

  1146. and those

  1147. will be

  1148. separated,

  1149. the good

  1150. from the bad,

  1151. those who

  1152. believe in

  1153. Christ

  1154. and are

  1155. part of

  1156. the kingdom

  1157. of heaven

  1158. shall be

  1159. safe

  1160. and secure.

  1161. Christ's

  1162. own appeal

  1163. to the

  1164. people

  1165. was,

  1166. repent,

  1167. turn from

  1168. the ways

  1169. in which

  1170. you are

  1171. living,

  1172. turn from

  1173. the desires

  1174. of your

  1175. heart,

  1176. repent,

  1177. for the

  1178. kingdom of

  1179. heaven

  1180. is at

  1181. hand.

  1182. The

  1183. King

  1184. is calling

  1185. to you

  1186. tonight,

  1187. the trumpet

  1188. is being

  1189. sounded,

  1190. that you

  1191. may come.

  1192. And what

  1193. is the

  1194. writer of

  1195. the Hebrews

  1196. conclusion to

  1197. all these

  1198. things?

  1199. He says,

  1200. therefore,

  1201. let us

  1202. be grateful

  1203. for receiving

  1204. a kingdom

  1205. that cannot

  1206. be shaken

  1207. and thus

  1208. let us

  1209. offer to

  1210. God

  1211. acceptable

  1212. worship

  1213. with reverence

  1214. and awe

  1215. for our

  1216. God is a

  1217. consuming

  1218. fire.

  1219. When

  1220. someone gives

  1221. you a gift

  1222. of abundance,

  1223. you're not

  1224. quite sure

  1225. what to

  1226. do.

  1227. And it

  1228. is the

  1229. abundance

  1230. of God's

  1231. grace,

  1232. the

  1233. forgiveness

  1234. of your

  1235. sins,

  1236. the

  1237. washings

  1238. of your

  1239. garments,

  1240. a solid

  1241. rock in

  1242. which to

  1243. build your

  1244. life upon,

  1245. and the

  1246. receiving

  1247. of God's

  1248. favour.

  1249. It's

  1250. sometimes

  1251. hard to

  1252. grasp.

  1253. and to

  1254. receive

  1255. them.

  1256. But they

  1257. are set

  1258. before you

  1259. tonight.

  1260. The

  1261. believer in

  1262. Christ

  1263. has

  1264. received

  1265. all this

  1266. already.

  1267. The

  1268. believer in

  1269. Christ is

  1270. already part

  1271. of this

  1272. kingdom.

  1273. His name

  1274. is already

  1275. written in

  1276. the Lamb's

  1277. Book of

  1278. Life.

  1279. Christ is

  1280. He is

  1281. already

  1282. welcomed

  1283. into the

  1284. king's

  1285. city to

  1286. join in

  1287. the praise

  1288. of God

  1289. and enrolled

  1290. in that

  1291. great

  1292. assembly.

  1293. They can

  1294. come to

  1295. God,

  1296. they can

  1297. come to

  1298. Jesus

  1299. through that

  1300. blood that

  1301. was poured

  1302. out for

  1303. you.

  1304. we have

  1305. received

  1306. these

  1307. things

  1308. already.

  1309. We are

  1310. one and

  1311. the same

  1312. in the

  1313. kingdom of

  1314. heaven.

  1315. We are

  1316. included in

  1317. all these

  1318. things.

  1319. The

  1320. kingdom

  1321. has been

  1322. prepared for

  1323. you.

  1324. The king

  1325. is waiting

  1326. to gather

  1327. the people

  1328. of his

  1329. kingdom

  1330. which are

  1331. set before

  1332. us here

  1333. tonight.

  1334. the king's

  1335. kingdom

  1336. will come

  1337. in

  1338. completion

  1339. and he

  1340. is calling

  1341. you to

  1342. come to

  1343. it.

  1344. And I

  1345. admit in

  1346. all these

  1347. things we

  1348. can only

  1349. really touch

  1350. on it

  1351. and probably

  1352. rightly so.

  1353. We cannot

  1354. grasp them

  1355. in full.

  1356. They are

  1357. inconceivable

  1358. to us

  1359. of what

  1360. these riches

  1361. really are.

  1362. We see

  1363. through our

  1364. glass dimly

  1365. we have

  1366. tastes of

  1367. this heavenly

  1368. experience

  1369. but we

  1370. fail to

  1371. convey

  1372. the full

  1373. measure

  1374. what it

  1375. will mean

  1376. for us.

  1377. Even

  1378. the outworking

  1379. of God's

  1380. grace in

  1381. our lives

  1382. we can

  1383. explain it

  1384. so far

  1385. but then

  1386. we are

  1387. left without

  1388. words.

  1389. There's

  1390. just some

  1391. point that

  1392. comes where

  1393. we are

  1394. just lost

  1395. to explain

  1396. the riches

  1397. have been

  1398. part of

  1399. the kingdom

  1400. of heaven

  1401. and knowing

  1402. that the

  1403. blood of

  1404. Christ

  1405. has redeemed

  1406. me and

  1407. opened up

  1408. a way for

  1409. me in

  1410. which I

  1411. can draw

  1412. near to

  1413. God.

  1414. So great

  1415. are these

  1416. things.

  1417. Let us

  1418. give thanks

  1419. thanks for

  1420. the kingdom

  1421. of heaven

  1422. that is

  1423. prepared for

  1424. us, the

  1425. kingdom of

  1426. heaven that

  1427. we are

  1428. part of, the

  1429. believer in

  1430. Christ Jesus.

  1431. And thus

  1432. do so

  1433. offer

  1434. worship in

  1435. a manner

  1436. that is

  1437. fitting for

  1438. the honour

  1439. of the

  1440. King.

  1441. King

  1442. Jesus and

  1443. the glory

  1444. of God

  1445. that we

  1446. worship him

  1447. with reverence

  1448. and awe.

  1449. There's a

  1450. sermon in

  1451. this itself

  1452. but I

  1453. must conclude.

  1454. The

  1455. reverence

  1456. of God

  1457. equates

  1458. to the

  1459. shame in

  1460. a sense

  1461. of knowing

  1462. the abundance

  1463. of what we

  1464. have received,

  1465. the

  1466. unworthiness

  1467. of our

  1468. receiving

  1469. it,

  1470. whether it

  1471. is that

  1472. we are

  1473. spared his

  1474. anger or

  1475. that we

  1476. are receiving

  1477. such an

  1478. abundance of

  1479. things.

  1480. A.W.

  1481. Pink

  1482. says,

  1483. Though God

  1484. has taken

  1485. his redeemed

  1486. into intimate

  1487. nearness

  1488. with himself,

  1489. yet he

  1490. requires that

  1491. they always

  1492. retain a

  1493. due apprehension

  1494. of the

  1495. majesty of

  1496. his person

  1497. and the

  1498. holiness of

  1499. his nature,

  1500. the severity

  1501. of his

  1502. justice,

  1503. and the

  1504. ardent or

  1505. passionate

  1506. jealousy

  1507. of his

  1508. worship.

  1509. You see,

  1510. we cannot

  1511. pluck at

  1512. the preferable

  1513. attributes of

  1514. God,

  1515. or it will

  1516. affect our

  1517. worship of

  1518. him and

  1519. how we

  1520. draw near

  1521. to him.

  1522. if we

  1523. only consider

  1524. his love,

  1525. we will

  1526. have no

  1527. reverence

  1528. to draw

  1529. near to

  1530. him.

  1531. Our

  1532. awe will

  1533. not be

  1534. complete

  1535. if we

  1536. forget the

  1537. almighty

  1538. power that

  1539. was shown

  1540. at

  1541. Sinai.

  1542. Our

  1543. worship

  1544. must be

  1545. in honour

  1546. of God

  1547. and to

  1548. the glory

  1549. of God,

  1550. and that's

  1551. why he

  1552. concludes

  1553. by saying,

  1554. for our

  1555. God is a

  1556. consuming

  1557. fire.

  1558. That

  1559. comes from

  1560. Deuteronomy

  1561. where God

  1562. himself

  1563. directed the

  1564. people of

  1565. Israel on

  1566. how to

  1567. worship him,

  1568. that they

  1569. were not to

  1570. worship him

  1571. in ways that

  1572. they thought

  1573. fit themselves,

  1574. they were

  1575. worshipped him

  1576. in ways in

  1577. which he

  1578. had appointed,

  1579. not to

  1580. use images

  1581. or idolatry

  1582. in any

  1583. sense.

  1584. Our

  1585. worship,

  1586. as we

  1587. draw near

  1588. to God,

  1589. should have

  1590. a holy

  1591. fear and

  1592. a captivating

  1593. love.

  1594. intertwined

  1595. with one

  1596. another,

  1597. and finding

  1598. that balance

  1599. can be

  1600. difficult at

  1601. times,

  1602. we must

  1603. confess.

  1604. Though amid

  1605. these difficulties

  1606. and differences,

  1607. the greater

  1608. God is to

  1609. you,

  1610. and the

  1611. more that

  1612. we know

  1613. of God

  1614. and understand

  1615. of the

  1616. greatest

  1617. riches

  1618. that we

  1619. receive in

  1620. Christ Jesus,

  1621. the greater

  1622. our desire

  1623. will be to

  1624. come to

  1625. him.

  1626. I hope

  1627. we see

  1628. the

  1629. surpassing

  1630. glory

  1631. of his

  1632. kingdom.

  1633. The

  1634. King is

  1635. calling you

  1636. to come

  1637. tonight.

  1638. The

  1639. promise of

  1640. his rest

  1641. still stands.

  1642. Let us

  1643. fear,

  1644. lest any

  1645. of you

  1646. should seem

  1647. to fail

  1648. to reach

  1649. it.

  1650. Without

  1651. the gospel,

  1652. we have

  1653. only fear

  1654. and

  1655. trembling.

  1656. The

  1657. law of

  1658. Sinai

  1659. condemns

  1660. us.

  1661. It is

  1662. a mountain

  1663. that we

  1664. will come

  1665. to in

  1666. fear.

  1667. But with

  1668. the gospel,

  1669. we have

  1670. the greatest

  1671. provision,

  1672. the greatest

  1673. inheritance,

  1674. the greatest

  1675. security,

  1676. the way

  1677. has been

  1678. opened for

  1679. us.

  1680. We are

  1681. not held

  1682. back.

  1683. we are

  1684. welcomed

  1685. into the

  1686. presence of

  1687. the King.

  1688. It is a

  1689. kingdom that

  1690. gives us

  1691. confidence

  1692. because it

  1693. shall not

  1694. be shaken.

  1695. It is a

  1696. great

  1697. kingdom,

  1698. greater

  1699. than any

  1700. kingdom

  1701. in this

  1702. world.

  1703. As we

  1704. consider it,

  1705. may we

  1706. draw near

  1707. to him

  1708. with reverence

  1709. and awe

  1710. of a

  1711. God

  1712. that is

  1713. mighty

  1714. and good.

  1715. May these

  1716. thoughts be

  1717. blessed to

  1718. us.

  1719. We'll

  1720. conclude by

  1721. singing in

  1722. the psalm

  1723. that we

  1724. left off

  1725. with,

  1726. Psalm 48a.

  1727. Sing

  1728. Psalms,

  1729. page 63.

  1730. We'll

  1731. sing the

  1732. remainder of

  1733. the verses

  1734. there from

  1735. verse 9

  1736. to 14.

  1737. Again,

  1738. the

  1739. considerations

  1740. of the

  1741. city of

  1742. our God.

  1743. We

  1744. contemplate

  1745. your

  1746. steadfast

  1747. love

  1748. within

  1749. your

  1750. house,

  1751. O God,

  1752. for like

  1753. your name,

  1754. your praise

  1755. extends

  1756. throughout

  1757. the earth

  1758. abroad.

  1759. All that

  1760. you do

  1761. is right

  1762. as Lord,

  1763. Mount Zion's

  1764. joy is

  1765. great,

  1766. and Judah's

  1767. towns rejoice

  1768. as you,

  1769. your judgment

  1770. celebrate.

  1771. Round Zion

  1772. walk and

  1773. count her

  1774. towers,

  1775. view every

  1776. citadel,

  1777. so that the

  1778. children yet

  1779. are born,

  1780. her story

  1781. you may

  1782. tell.

  1783. For God

  1784. the Lord

  1785. who is

  1786. her God,

  1787. forever

  1788. will abide,

  1789. he is her

  1790. God forevermore,

  1791. and to

  1792. the end

  1793. her guide.

  1794. The confidence

  1795. that the

  1796. psalmist

  1797. had when

  1798. he came

  1799. to contemplate

  1800. God,

  1801. and as

  1802. he

  1803. round Zion

  1804. walked and

  1805. counted the

  1806. blessings that

  1807. he received.

  1808. Let us stand

  1809. and sing these

  1810. verses.

  1811. We

  1812. contemplate

  1813. your steadfast

  1814. love within

  1815. your house,

  1816. O God.

  1817. God,

  1818. we contemplate

  1819. your steadfast

  1820. love within

  1821. your eyes,

  1822. O God,

  1823. your eyes,

  1824. O God,

  1825. for thy

  1826. pure

  1827. influence

  1828. your

  1829. grace

  1830. makes

  1831. faint

  1832. through all

  1833. the

  1834. end

  1835. the

  1836. pride.

  1837. All

  1838. that

  1839. you

  1840. do

  1841. is

  1842. righteous

  1843. for

  1844. your

  1845. joy

  1846. is

  1847. great,

  1848. and

  1849. to

  1850. the

  1851. time

  1852. rejoice

  1853. as

  1854. may

  1855. your

  1856. judges

  1857. celebrate.

  1858. celebrate.

  1859. Round

  1860. Zion

  1861. walk

  1862. and

  1863. crown

  1864. her

  1865. heart

  1866. you

  1867. every

  1868. sin

  1869. at

  1870. end,

  1871. so

  1872. that

  1873. to

  1874. children

  1875. and

  1876. to

  1877. children

  1878. may

  1879. get

  1880. apart

  1881. their

  1882. story

  1883. you

  1884. may

  1885. tell.

  1886. For

  1887. God,

  1888. the

  1889. Lord,

  1890. who

  1891. is

  1892. their

  1893. God,

  1894. forever

  1895. and

  1896. will

  1897. abide,

  1898. forever

  1899. will

  1900. abide,

  1901. he

  1902. is

  1903. our

  1904. God,

  1905. forever

  1906. more,

  1907. and

  1908. to

  1909. the

  1910. end

  1911. our

  1912. night.

  1913. just

1914. conclude with a word of prayer.

1915. Our Father in heaven, when we consider your great love shown towards us in Christ Jesus,

1916. and the privilege we receive from him, that we can enter into your presence,

1917. and we receive our show of your glory and great inheritance.

1918. He is the one that went to the places where we could not endure,

1919. and he is the one that calls to us tonight.

1920. May we receive your kingdom with joy.

1921. May it be a treasure to us unspeakable and inconceivable,

1922. and unexplainable in many ways.

1923. May we know what it is to stand firm upon the solid rock that is Jesus Christ,

1924. and a kingdom that shall not be shaken, and in a place where we can find security and confidence in our life.

1925. Be with us as we part, and the week ahead watch over us, we pray in Jesus' name.

1926. May we ask these things. Amen.
