  1. We're going to begin our worship by singing to God's praise.

  2. We're singing in Psalm 34 in the Scottish Psalter, page 246 of the Psalm book.

  3. Psalm 34, the beginning of the Psalm.

  4. We're going to sing down to verse 8.

  5. It's a psalm that reminds us of coming to worship God and knowing the blessing of that.

  6. God, will I bless all times.

  7. His praise my mouth shall still express.

  8. My soul shall boast in God.

  9. The meek shall hear with joyfulness.

  10. We'll sing from verse 1 down to verse 8 to God's praise.

  11. God, will I bless all times.

  12. His praise my mouth shall still express.

  13. My soul shall boast in God.

  14. The meek shall hear with joyfulness.

  15. Exol the Lord with me.

  16. Let us exalt his name together.

  17. I sought the Lord.

  18. He heard and did me from all fears deliver.

  19. They looked to him and lightened were.

  20. Not shame it were their faces.

  21. This poor man cry.

  22. God heard and saved him from all his distresses.

  23. The angel of the Lord.

  24. The angel of the Lord encamps.

  25. And run encampasses.

  26. All those of the Lord.

  27. All those of the Lord.

  28. God, will I bless you.

  29. God, will I bless you.

  30. God, will I bless you.

  31. God, will I bless you.

  32. God, will I bless you.

  33. Fear God, his saints, none that impere shall be with one oppressed.

  34. We unite our hearts together now in prayer. Let us pray.

  35. Amen.

  36. We thank you for your day in the week, the Lord's Day. We thank you for the day of rest, a day to worship you, a day to spend in this way.

  37. And we pray that in everything that we do today, that you would refresh us in it.

  38. We thank you for the young ones here today with us. We thank you for all who help over the summer holidays just now with Twinnies and Cresce.

  39. And we do pray, Lord, that as they go through to the hall in a few moments, that you'll be with them there, that they will enjoy learning from your word together.

  40. And help us to be prayerful for one another, remembering to the holiday club as it comes up this week.

  41. Thank you for all the children who have signed up for it.

  42. Lord, we look forward to it. We pray that you will bless it each and every day, that you will bless all that we do, take care of us.

  43. Lord, even as we travel to and from the holiday club and all that we do in the club, Lord, we pray for you to be with us, that you will speak to us, that you will help us to rejoice in your goodness to us.

  44. So, Lord, continue to watch over us and all our loved ones, families and friends, neighbours, all our communities, day after day.

  45. We will know your goodness and mercy following us all the days of our life.

  46. So we ask all these things, looking to you, asking in Jesus' name, the forgiveness of our sins. Amen.

  47. It's good to see you today. Was anybody through in the hall already?

  48. Hands up if you were through in the hall already. A few of you have already been in the hall.

  49. Some others will go through in a moment.

  50. Now, those who are in the hall, just don't say anything for a minute, because I'm going to ask those who haven't been in the hall,

  51. when you were coming up to the church today, did you notice anything that was different?

  52. Possibly not.

  53. Maybe as you were walking up through the gates, coming towards the church, everything just looked the same.

  54. Maybe the fact that the sun shining is maybe a difference that we don't see so often.

  55. But everything kind of looks the same.

  56. You see the church, or maybe you see the hall.

  57. Perhaps you didn't notice anything that was different.

  58. But if you've been into the hall, well, then you'll see that things are different.

  59. Because when you go into the hall, as soon as you open the door, things are very different.

  60. You're entering into what looks like a jungle.

  61. There's banners hanging, and there's things up on the wall.

  62. It's very different to what it normally is.

  63. There's all kinds of things that unless you go into the hall, you won't see them.

  64. So today, I hope that many of you will come into the hall after the service, when there's tea and coffee served.

  65. Go and see for yourselves how the hall has been transformed.

  66. It's been transformed for the holiday club that's taking place this coming week.

  67. So inside is very different to what it normally is.

  68. But outside, it all looks the same.

  69. But it reminded me of how that is the way we are as Christians too.

  70. How can you look at someone today and say that they're a Christian?

  71. If you look around the church, who is a Christian here?

  72. Can you tell just by looking on the outside, a person's a Christian?

  73. No.

  74. Not really.

  75. Sometimes you can think, well, they look very happy, but all kinds of different people can look happy.

  76. Sometimes you think, well, they look very sad.

  77. They can't be Christians, but sometimes Christians can be sad as well.

  78. Maybe on the outside, nothing changes.

  79. But inside, things change.

  80. The Bible tells us again and again that the Lord doesn't look on the things on the outside,

  81. but he looks on what's on the inside, in the heart, which is the very being of the person.

  82. And that's what he changes.

  83. Because inside, he changes us to know that whatever is going on outside of us,

  84. things can look the same.

  85. We go through times of joy and sadness.

  86. But what we know is that he is with us and that we are trusting him.

  87. We have faith in him.

  88. He changes us inside to be maybe people who aren't trusting,

  89. who are not looking to God,

  90. instead to look to him and to trust in him.

  91. People have worked very hard to change the inside of the hall.

  92. And God has done so much to change us inside as well,

  93. so that we can come and trust in him.

  94. We look the same on the outside, but inside we are trusting him.

  95. So if you can, all children and adults,

  96. come through to the hall after the service and see the hall for yourselves.

  97. We're going to say the Lord's Prayer together.

  98. Let's say the Lord's Prayer.

  99. Our Father, which art in heaven,

  100. hallowed be thy name.

  101. Thy kingdom come.

  102. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  103. Give us this day our daily bread,

  104. and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

  105. And lead us not into temptation,

  106. but deliver us from evil.

  107. For thine is the kingdom,

  108. the power and the glory forever.

  109. Amen.

  110. Well, we'll again sing to God's praise.

  111. This time we're singing in Psalm 63 in the Sing Psalms.

  112. It's on page 80 of the psalm books.

  113. Psalm 63.

  114. We're going to sing from verse 1 to verse 8.

  115. O God, you are my God alone.

  116. I seek your face with eagerness.

  117. My soul and body thirst for you in this dry weary wilderness.

  118. We'll sing from verse 1 to verse 8 to God's praise.

  119. O God, you are my God alone.

  120. I seek your face with eagerness.

  121. My soul and body thirst for you in this dry weary wilderness.

  122. I've seen you in your holy place.

  123. Your pardon and glory held my gaze.

  124. For better is your love than life.

  125. And so my lips will sing your praise.

  126. I'll bless you, Lord, throughout my life.

  127. And raise my hands to you in prayer.

  128. My joyful lips will sing your praise.

  129. My soul is fed with riches fair.

  130. Upon my bed I lie awake.

  131. And in my thoughts remember you.

  132. I meditate throughout the night.

  133. And keep your constant love in you.

  134. Because you are my help alone.

  135. In shadow of your wings I'll sing.

  136. You hold me up with your right hand.

  137. And to you, O God, my soul will cling.

  138. Amen.

  139. We turn to read in God's word together now in the Old Testament.

  140. Reading in the book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible.

  141. Reading in chapter 26.

  142. Genesis chapter 26. We're going to read from the beginning of the chapter down to verse 25.

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  143. Here we see a little insight into the life of Isaac. So Genesis chapter 26 at verse 1.

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  144. Now there was a famine in the land besides the former famine that was in the days of Abraham.

  145. And Isaac went to Gerar to Abimelech, king of the Philistines.

  146. And the Lord appeared to him and said, Do not go down to Egypt. Dwell in the land which I shall tell you.

  147. Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you.

  148. For to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands.

  149. And I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham your father.

  150. I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands.

  151. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed.

  152. Because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge and commandments, my statutes and my laws.

  153. So Isaac settled in Gerar.

  154. When the men of the place asked him about his wife, he said, She is my sister.

  155. For he feared to say, My wife.

  156. Thinking lest the men of the place should kill me because of Rebecca, because she was attractive in appearance.

  157. When he had been there a long time, Abimelech, king of the Philistines, looked out of a window and saw Isaac laughing with Rebecca, his wife.

  158. So Abimelech called Isaac and said, Behold, she is your wife.

  159. How then could you say she is my sister?

  160. Isaac said to him, Because I thought lest I die because of her.

  161. Abimelech said, What is this you have done to us?

  162. One of the people might easily have lain with your wife and you would have brought guilt upon us.

  163. So Abimelech warned all the people saying, Whoever touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

  164. And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold.

  165. The Lord blessed him.

  166. And the man became rich and gained more and more until he became very wealthy.

  167. He had possessions of flocks and herds and many servants.

  168. So the Philistines envied him.

  169. Now the Philistines had stopped and filled with earth all the wells that his father's servants had dug in the days of Abram, his father.

  170. And Abimelech said to Isaac, Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we.

  171. So Isaac departed from there and encamped in the valley of Gerah and settled there.

  172. And Isaac dug again the wells of water that had been dug in the days of Abram, his father,

  173. which the Philistines had stopped after the death of Abram.

  174. And he gave them the names that his father had given them.

  175. But when Isaac's servants dug in the valley and found there a well of spring water,

  176. the herdsmen of Gerah quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, The water is ours.

  177. So he called the name of the well Essek because they contended with him.

  178. Then they dug another well and they quarreled over that also.

  179. So he called its name Sitna.

  180. And he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it.

  181. So he called its name Rehoboth, saying, For now the Lord has made room for us,

  182. and we shall be fruitful in the land.

  183. From there he went up to Beersheba.

  184. And the Lord appeared to him that same night and said, I am the God of Abraham your father.

  185. Fear not, for I am with you and will bless you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham's sake.

  186. So he built an altar there and called upon the name of the Lord and pitched his tent there.

  187. And there Isaac's servants dug a well.

  188. And so on.

  189. May God bless that reading from his word.

  190. Let's again just unite our hearts in a word of prayer.

  191. Let us pray.

  192. Amen.

  193. Amen.

  194. Amen.

  195. O Lord, our gracious God, we continue in worship of you, thankful for the privilege of prayer,

  196. thankful for the privilege of hearing your word, thankful for the privilege of being able to sing praise to you.

  197. For these are many things that we could so easily take for granted.

  198. They are freedoms that we have enjoyed many, probably all the days of our lives.

  199. But they are freedoms that in so many other parts of the world, that people, your people, they do not have.

  200. And yet we thank you that throughout the world, that your people praise you.

  201. For you are the God who has spoken down through all the generations.

  202. You are the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob, as your word tells us so often.

  203. You are the God of promise, of covenant.

  204. And you have promised to your people that you will be their God and they will be your people.

  205. And so we thank you that you have your people here.

  206. You have your people throughout our islands, throughout our nation, and throughout the world.

  207. And that even when we feel few in number, your word reminds us, even as we have read with the promise to Abraham and to Isaac,

  208. that your people will be a great multitude.

  209. So many that, even like the stars, they cannot be numbered, or the grains of sand, they cannot be numbered by us.

  210. But they are known unto you, each one.

  211. And so we thank you that you are a God who knows his people, a God who cares for his people,

  212. a God who sees us in all our different needs, that you saw Isaac in all his need,

  213. and you met him in it, in every way you provided for him,

  214. in every way you told him to not be afraid, but to trust in you.

  215. And so we pray for ourselves as a people today,

  216. that in all our fears, in all our anxieties, in all that goes on in our own personal lives,

  217. in our family lives, in our community life, in our nation, in the world,

  218. when there are so many things that cause us fear, that cause us worry and anxiety,

  219. that we would hear your word to us, not to be afraid, but to trust in you.

  220. Help us, Lord, if that is our situation today, when we have much to maybe tremble about,

  221. that we'll be able to find you as the one who is near, the one who we can call upon,

  222. the one who is there for us in all our different needs.

  223. We do thank you, Lord, that you remember us in every way,

  224. that you are the one who is able to do so much more than we ask or imagine.

  225. And yet, so often we neglect you.

  226. We feel that we can do things in our own strength and in our own ways.

  227. But, Lord, you remind us, too, again, so often,

  228. that we're apart from you, that we can do nothing.

  229. And so, Lord, help us. Help us in our faith.

  230. That we come today maybe with little faith.

  231. We come maybe some with maybe no faith.

  232. That we come maybe some who have had faith for a very long time,

  233. but a faith that is now being tested.

  234. And we thank you, Lord, that it is not about the size of our faith,

  235. but the one in whom our faith is placed.

  236. We put our faith in our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

  237. We thank you for all that you have done for us in and through him.

  238. And so we pray in his name today that you will draw us close to yourself.

  239. That you will draw us even under the shadow of your wings,

  240. as the psalmist so often describes.

  241. We pray that we will know your peace,

  242. a peace that passes all understanding.

  243. We pray that we will know your blessing on us,

  244. so that in all that we do, it will give glory to your name.

  245. And we think of all that goes on even this coming week.

  246. And again, we think of the holiday club as it begins tomorrow.

  247. And we do seek your blessing on it.

  248. We thank you for all the work that has gone into preparing for it.

  249. We thank you for all that has been done,

  250. both in terms of practical ways,

  251. but also in terms of preparing prayerfully

  252. and according to your word,

  253. as well as we seek to bring the message of the gospel,

  254. the good news of Jesus to all who will come in through the doors.

  255. We pray for your help and your blessing in that.

  256. We pray for all the children who will come,

  257. and parents and families associated with them.

  258. We thank you for these opportunities to give the gospel to them,

  259. to send it home with them,

  260. to invite them along, not just to the holiday club,

  261. but to the services of the church as well.

  262. And we pray for your hand to be upon us for good in all of these things.

  263. We pray to, Lord, your blessing on your people near and far.

  264. We thank you for the means of communication that exists in our day.

  265. Communication means that are so often abused in many ways,

  266. but yet that allow us to keep in touch with your people near and far.

  267. And we thank you for opportunities to meet with them.

  268. And we pray for the Zoom meeting on Tuesday with Muriel.

  269. We thank you again for her heart,

  270. for serving you over these last many years.

  271. And we pray that you will continue to bless her,

  272. to watch over her,

  273. to encourage her,

  274. that our prayers for her will be heard by you.

  275. And we thank you for many more, Lord,

  276. who go out in that way as well,

  277. throughout all ends of the earth,

  278. that you send your people far and wide,

  279. some into very difficult places,

  280. some into places where their names cannot even be mentioned

  281. for fear for their lives.

  282. And so we thank you that your gospel is one that goes out with power.

  283. Behind it is your spirit.

  284. And we thank you for the power that is in that,

  285. in your spirit,

  286. in your word,

  287. that your truth will reach out to all ends of the earth,

  288. to change our world,

  289. to transform us away from the paths that we are going,

  290. paths that lead us away from you and your truth,

  291. to once again turn us towards you,

  292. to recognize,

  293. oh Lord,

  294. that you are not one to be,

  295. not one to be put away,

  296. not one to be mocked,

  297. not one to be made into some kind of joke,

  298. or fairy tale,

  299. as so many people would call it,

  300. but one who we are to fear in the right sense,

  301. to know that we can bow before you as Lord and God,

  302. to know forgiveness,

  303. to know your blessing on us.

  304. We pray that, Lord,

  305. throughout the ends of the earth,

  306. that you will shine your light upon us,

  307. that you will turn us again towards you,

  308. that you will make us to walk in your ways.

  309. So Lord,

  310. humble us before you even anew today,

  311. in our prayers,

  312. in our praise,

  313. in all that we do,

  314. may it be for your glory,

  315. may we offer it all up,

  316. as a sacrifice to you,

  317. that we would pour ourselves out before you,

  318. in body,

  319. soul,

  320. mind,

  321. and heart.

  322. Lord,

  323. hear our prayers,

  324. and continue with us throughout this day.

  325. Bless your word to us as we turn to it.

  326. Give us ears to hear what you are saying to us.

  327. And all we ask,

  328. we ask the forgiveness of all our sins,

  329. in Jesus' name.

  330. Amen.

  331. Amen.

  332. We'll again sing to God's praise in Psalm 60,

  333. in the Scottish Psalter.

  334. Psalm 60,

  335. page 292.

  336. We're going to sing from verse 1 to verse 5.

  337. Psalm 60,

  338. on page 292.

  339. The psalmist speaks here about a people,

  340. his people being,

  341. God's people being rejected,

  342. and scattered,

  343. and scattered abroad,

  344. because the Lord has been displeased with them.

  345. But there is also the plea,

  346. from the psalmist to God,

  347. that God would return,

  348. return to his people.

  349. And in verse 4,

  350. in the midst of all the difficulties

  351. that have come upon the people of God,

  352. there is these words,

  353. And yet a banner thou hast given

  354. to them who thee do fear,

  355. that it by them,

  356. because of truth displayed,

  357. may appear,

  358. that thy beloved people may,

  359. delivered be from thrall,

  360. save with the power of thy right hand,

  361. and hear me when I call.

  362. That we would know his banner over us,

  363. as his people.

  364. We'll sing from verse 1 to verse 5,

  365. to God's praise.

  366. Amen.

  367. O Lord, thou hast rejected us,

  368. and scattered us abroad,

  369. thou justly hast displeased,

  370. be returned to us, O God.

  371. The earth to tremble,

  372. thou hast made,

  373. where in this preaches make,

  374. do thou thereof the breaches heal,

  375. because the land doth shake.

  376. And to thy people

  377. thou heartthinks hast showed,

  378. and all them said,

  379. and thou hast caused us to drink wine,

  380. O astondish men.

  381. and yet a banner thou hast given,

  382. to them who thee do fear,

  383. that it by them he calls,

  384. for fruitless may he appear,

  385. that thy beloved people may deliver me from thrall,

  386. save with the power of thy fright,

  387. and hear me when I call.

  388. Amen.

  389. Now we can turn back to our reading in the book of Genesis,

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  390. chapter 26.

  391. I'm going to look at the beginning of this chapter,

  392. from verse 1 down to verse 7 in particular.

  393. But in this chapter we have much told to us of Isaac,

  394. and the different things that he went through in life.

  395. When you pick up your Bible to read it,

  396. what do you think it is about?

  397. I'm sure there's many things that maybe come to mind

  398. as you lift your Bible and think,

  399. well, what is this Bible all about?

  400. It's about theology.

  401. It's about God.

  402. It's about worship.

  403. It's about Jesus.

  404. It's about salvation.

  405. All of these things maybe come to mind

  406. when we think,

  407. what is the Bible all about?

  408. These things are important things.

  409. But there's one thing that we can often miss

  410. when we pick up our Bibles to read them,

  411. and it's something we mustn't forget

  412. that the Bible is about too,

  413. and that is that it is about people.

  414. It is written to people,

  415. and it's written for people.

  416. And it's written not just to the people of that age

  417. when it was written,

  418. it's written to people and for people

  419. down through every generation,

  420. so that we learn all about theology,

  421. we learn all about God,

  422. we learn all about worship,

  423. we learn all about Jesus,

  424. we learn all about salvation,

  425. but we learn it in a way that we recognize

  426. it's not just something away or apart from us,

  427. but it's something that is to us.

  428. It's speaking to us as a people.

  429. God has spoken to his people

  430. down through every generation.

  431. And so we thank God

  432. that he has given his word to us in this way,

  433. so that as a people,

  434. we come to hear a message that is personal.

  435. It's to all of us here today,

  436. to all who hear God's word today,

  437. it's a personal message to us as individuals.

  438. And as you read through your Bible,

  439. there is a phrase that we're seeing

  440. or looking into today,

  441. in part at least,

  442. that appears in both the Old Testament

  443. and the New Testament.

  444. And it's a phrase that speaks of people,

  445. three people in particular.

  446. In the Bible, you read the phrase,

  447. I am the God of Abraham,

  448. of Isaac,

  449. and of Jacob.

  450. It's something that you hear very often

  451. throughout both the Old and the New Testament.

  452. It's got a common occurrence.

  453. And at the heart of that phrase,

  454. as God is saying it,

  455. I am the God of Abraham,

  456. I am the God of Isaac,

  457. I am the God of Jacob.

  458. At the heart of that is covenant,

  459. God's promise to his people.

  460. He made a covenant with Abraham,

  461. he shared it with Isaac,

  462. and he shared it with Jacob,

  463. and it was a covenant,

  464. a promise for all of God's people.

  465. A God who will bless,

  466. and a God who will provide.

  467. So as we hear these three names,

  468. Abraham,

  469. Isaac,

  470. Jacob,

  471. we maybe often think of them on a pedestal.

  472. They weren't ordinary people.

  473. They were people who God blessed in a special way,

  474. and yes,

  475. God did.

  476. But on the same way,

  477. they were ordinary people

  478. that God was speaking to

  479. in an extraordinary way.

  480. In the same way as we are ordinary people

  481. who God is speaking to

  482. in an extraordinary way

  483. through his word,

  484. the word of God

  485. that speaks to us of salvation.

  486. But when you look at these three,

  487. Abraham,

  488. Isaac,

  489. and Jacob,

  490. as you find them in God's word,

  491. what you find is that Abraham,

  492. we learn a lot about him.

  493. A lot has gone into,

  494. into the life of Abraham.

  495. And maybe the same is true with Jacob.

  496. Jacob is spoken about throughout Scripture.

  497. We learn a lot about Jacob.

  498. But what of Isaac?

  499. What do you know of Isaac?

  500. Well,

  501. if you've heard of Isaac before,

  502. I'm sure you've heard a little about his childhood,

  503. perhaps in particular.

  504. He was the son of Abraham.

  505. And he was a child of promise.

  506. Abraham and Sarah,

  507. his wife,

  508. were in old age,

  509. and they felt that they couldn't bear a son.

  510. But God blessed them with a son,

  511. Isaac.

  512. And then Isaac

  513. was taken by Abraham

  514. and was on the point of being sacrificed,

  515. put to death

  516. until the Lord stopped him.

  517. So yes,

  518. there is this

  519. account of Isaac

  520. in that way.

  521. The focus is maybe more so

  522. on Abraham there,

  523. though.

  524. But when you look at Isaac

  525. into his adulthood,

  526. there's not much said.

  527. In fact,

  528. pretty much

  529. all that's said of Isaac

  530. we have here

  531. in chapter 26

  532. of Genesis.

  533. And yet he's used

  534. in that phrase

  535. the God of Abraham,

  536. the God of Isaac,

  537. the God of Jacob.

  538. But I want us to look at

  539. Isaac

  540. in this chapter

  541. and what we see

  542. about him.

  543. Commentators

  544. have written about him

  545. and too have described

  546. Isaac

  547. in this way.

  548. Isaac

  549. was an ordinary son

  550. of a famous father

  551. and an ordinary father

  552. of a famous son.

  553. Emphasizing

  554. the

  555. much being said

  556. about Abraham

  557. and Jacob

  558. but little

  559. about Isaac.

  560. Another one said

  561. Isaac was a man

  562. who lived in the shadows.

  563. He lived his life

  564. first under the shadow

  565. of his great father Abraham

  566. and then he lived his life

  567. in the shadow

  568. of his great son Jacob.

  569. But would that be fair

  570. to say

  571. well

  572. in terms of content

  573. and quantity

  574. of content

  575. maybe yes

  576. but not maybe

  577. in the life lived

  578. because

  579. Isaac

  580. was a child

  581. of promise

  582. and he was

  583. a man

  584. who grew

  585. to know

  586. the promises

  587. of God

  588. in a special way.

  589. But as we see

  590. with all three

  591. in their lives

  592. they were ordinary men.

  593. And like any

  594. ordinary man

  595. or woman

  596. they had their failings.

  597. They had their weaknesses.

  598. They had things

  599. in their lives

  600. that maybe

  601. if we keep them

  602. on a pedestal

  603. you wouldn't expect

  604. these things

  605. to happen to them

  606. but they did.

  607. God allowed

  608. things in their life

  609. that were difficult.

  610. And so much

  611. of what we learn

  612. in their lives

  613. is about that.

  614. Just the ordinary

  615. things

  616. in their lives

  617. too

  618. but the extraordinary

  619. power

  620. of God.

  621. So we're going

  622. to look at

  623. Isaac just now

  624. and we're going

  625. to think about him

  626. in this way

  627. an ordinary man

  628. but an ordinary man

  629. who was used

  630. by God.

  631. And that's what we see

  632. here for ourselves.

  633. We too

  634. are ordinary men

  635. and women

  636. ordinary boys

  637. and girls

  638. but ones

  639. who God

  640. can use

  641. as we put

  642. our trust

  643. in him.

  644. The first thing

  645. we see about

  646. Isaac

  647. as an ordinary man

  648. is that he had

  649. his trials.

  650. Isaac had trials

  651. like ordinary

  652. people do.

  653. Abraham,

  654. Isaac

  655. and Jacob.

  656. The God of Abraham

  657. and Isaac

  658. and Jacob.

  659. we hear that

  660. we hear that

  661. phrase

  662. but it doesn't

  663. mean that

  664. they never went

  665. through trials

  666. themselves.

  667. And the very

  668. outset of this

  669. chapter we are

  670. told of one

  671. of the first

  672. trials that

  673. Isaac has

  674. here.

  675. It says

  676. now there was a

  677. famine

  678. in the land.

  679. Isaac

  680. was living

  681. in this place

  682. in this land

  683. of promise

  684. the place

  685. where God

  686. had placed

  687. him

  688. and yet

  689. in the midst

  690. of this

  691. the land

  692. that he was in

  693. a famine

  694. came in the land.

  695. Which land

  696. was it?

  697. Well it was the

  698. land of promise.

  699. The place that God

  700. had promised to

  701. Abraham

  702. to his descendants

  703. a place later on

  704. described as a

  705. place flowing

  706. with milk

  707. and honey.

  708. And yet at this

  709. time

  710. there is famine

  711. in this land

  712. and you notice

  713. too that it's

  714. something that

  715. Abraham experienced

  716. himself as well.

  717. Besides the

  718. former famine

  719. it says

  720. that was in the

  721. days of Abraham.

  722. Abraham had

  723. suffered this

  724. too.

  725. Ordinary people

  726. go through

  727. trials

  728. as well.

  729. God could

  730. easily have

  731. supplied

  732. the needs

  733. of Isaac

  734. here.

  735. He could have

  736. protected him

  737. in the midst

  738. of the famine

  739. and given

  740. to him

  741. the needs

  742. that he

  743. needed for

  744. getting through

  745. this famine

  746. and yet

  747. he didn't.

  748. God's

  749. chosen man

  750. he had to

  751. suffer alongside

  752. the others

  753. in this land

  754. as well.

  755. Many others

  756. in this land

  757. were pagans

  758. who had

  759. turned against

  760. God

  761. but Isaac

  762. was trusting

  763. God along

  764. with others

  765. of God's

  766. people and yet

  767. they suffered

  768. in this famine.

  769. Trials

  770. are the

  771. ordinary

  772. lot of

  773. God's

  774. people.

  775. They

  776. always have

  777. been

  778. and they

  779. always will

  780. be

  781. until the

  782. Lord

  783. returns.

  784. We are

  785. reminded of

  786. that so

  787. often

  788. throughout the

  789. scriptures.

  790. God's

  791. people

  792. going

  793. through

  794. difficult

  795. times.

  796. And yet

  797. here was

  798. Isaac.

  799. He was

  800. in the

  801. place that

  802. God wanted

  803. him to be

  804. and yet

  805. there was

  806. trouble.

  807. That's a

  808. reminder to

  809. ourselves.

  810. We seek

  811. God's

  812. will.

  813. We do

  814. things

  815. prayerfully.

  816. We can

  817. pray for

  818. God to

  819. guide us

  820. into the

  821. place that

  822. we should

  823. work.

  824. We can

  825. pray for

  826. God to

  827. guide us

  828. into the

  829. place that

  830. we should

  831. live.

  832. We can

  833. pray for

  834. God to

  835. lead us

  836. to the

  837. place that

  838. we should

  839. worship.

  840. all of

  841. these

  842. things we

  843. can pray

  844. about and

  845. God can

  846. show us

  847. the way and

  848. open all

  849. the doors

  850. for us

  851. and yet

  852. there can

  853. still be

  854. troubles.

  855. There can

  856. still be

  857. problems.

  858. And

  859. sometimes it

  860. can even

  861. feel like

  862. it's just

  863. one problem

  864. after another.

  865. Because

  866. somehow we've

  867. picked up

  868. this notion,

  869. this idea

  870. that because

  871. God has

  872. called us to

  873. a particular

  874. place or

  875. to a

  876. particular

  877. work or

  878. to a

  879. particular

  880. ministry,

  881. that everything

  882. is going to

  883. go smoothly,

  884. that everything

  885. is going to

  886. go right for

  887. us, that we

  888. won't encounter

  889. any problems

  890. at all, that

  891. everything is

  892. going to be

  893. just milk and

  894. honey all

  895. the time.

  896. So when the

  897. way gets hard

  898. we think,

  899. well maybe I'm

  900. not in God's

  901. will, maybe

  902. I'm not where

  903. God wants me

  904. to be.

  905. And we can

  906. be serving

  907. God in a

  908. position that

  909. we felt led

  910. by him

  911. to.

  912. It could be

  913. a minister,

  914. an elder or

  915. a deacon,

  916. it could be

  917. a missionary,

  918. it could be

  919. serving in

  920. the Sunday

  921. school, as

  922. a teacher,

  923. it can be

  924. serving God

  925. in any

  926. end of

  927. means, in

  928. our community,

  929. in our

  930. workplace, in

  931. all of these

  932. things.

  933. And we think,

  934. yes, this is

  935. where God

  936. wants me to

  937. be to serve

  938. him, and

  939. yet it's

  940. still just one

  941. problem after

  942. another.

  943. And the

  944. danger there

  945. is that we

  946. start to

  947. think, I'll

  948. just take

  949. things into

  950. my own

  951. hands.

  952. Isaac, like

  953. every ordinary

  954. person, he

  955. had ordinary

  956. trials.

  957. Here was a

  958. famine.

  959. Abraham had

  960. suffered famine,

  961. and you see it

  962. throughout the

  963. scriptures, again

  964. and again, God's

  965. people going

  966. through trials,

  967. but it's not

  968. the time to

  969. take things

  970. into our

  971. own hands.

  972. Isaac wanted

  973. to do

  974. that.

  975. He went

  976. to Abimelech,

  977. and he was

  978. going to go

  979. down to

  980. Egypt, we

  981. are told,

  982. here, and

  983. yet God

  984. stopped him.

  985. If you are

  986. in a

  987. trial, if

  988. you feel

  989. that you

  990. are in the

  991. place that

  992. God wants

  993. you to be,

  994. and yet

  995. you're still

  996. feeling that

  997. it's just

  998. one problem

  999. after another,

  1000. maybe God

  1001. is saying,

  1002. stay.

  1003. Stay.

  1004. I have a

  1005. purpose.

  1006. I have a

  1007. plan.

  1008. You have

  1009. to trust

  1010. me in

  1011. this.

  1012. You need

  1013. faith.

  1014. We are

  1015. not immune

  1016. to trials.

  1017. Isaac,

  1018. this one

  1019. who was

  1020. so close

  1021. to God,

  1022. the God

  1023. of Isaac,

  1024. yet he

  1025. was someone

  1026. who knew

  1027. his trials,

  1028. and so

  1029. will we.

  1030. The second

  1031. thing here

  1032. is that

  1033. Isaac had

  1034. fears,

  1035. like every

  1036. ordinary

  1037. person has

  1038. fears.

  1039. What do

  1040. ordinary people

  1041. do when

  1042. trials hit?

  1043. very often

  1044. we panic.

  1045. We go

  1046. into a

  1047. fear mode,

  1048. and that's

  1049. exactly what

  1050. Isaac did

  1051. as well when

  1052. this famine

  1053. hit.

  1054. There was a

  1055. famine in the

  1056. land,

  1057. and you would

  1058. love to read

  1059. here,

  1060. there was a

  1061. famine in the

  1062. land,

  1063. and Isaac

  1064. sought the

  1065. Lord.

  1066. But it's not

  1067. what we read.

  1068. There was a

  1069. famine in the

  1070. land, it says

  1071. in verse 1,

  1072. and Isaac

  1073. went to

  1074. Gerar, to

  1075. Abimelech,

  1076. king of the

  1077. Philistines.

  1078. He went to

  1079. completely the

  1080. wrong place.

  1081. He wasn't

  1082. planning to

  1083. stop there

  1084. either,

  1085. because the

  1086. plan was that

  1087. he would go

  1088. all the way

  1089. down to

  1090. Egypt, as

  1091. verse 2

  1092. makes clear

  1093. for us.

  1094. He was

  1095. heading towards

  1096. Egypt until

  1097. the Lord

  1098. intervened.

  1099. The Lord

  1100. stopped him.

  1101. Isaac was

  1102. afraid.

  1103. It's a

  1104. natural reaction

  1105. in this

  1106. situation.

  1107. A famine

  1108. has come.

  1109. He's afraid.

  1110. And you

  1111. see it again

  1112. in verse

  1113. 6 and 7

  1114. as well,

  1115. where there's

  1116. a fear

  1117. about his

  1118. wife,

  1119. Rebekah.

  1120. He says

  1121. she is my

  1122. sister.

  1123. In verse

  1124. 6,

  1125. for he

  1126. feared to

  1127. say my

  1128. wife,

  1129. thinking lest

  1130. the men of

  1131. the place

  1132. should kill

  1133. me because

  1134. of Rebekah.

  1135. He was

  1136. afraid.

  1137. And that's

  1138. our own

  1139. natural reaction

  1140. too in so

  1141. many situations

  1142. we find

  1143. ourselves.

  1144. This reaction

  1145. of fear,

  1146. there are so

  1147. many things

  1148. that make

  1149. us afraid.

  1150. But what

  1151. does the

  1152. Lord

  1153. do here

  1154. in the

  1155. midst

  1156. of Isaac's

  1157. fear?

  1158. He

  1159. intervenes.

  1160. It says

  1161. there that

  1162. the Lord

  1163. appeared to

  1164. him in

  1165. verse 2

  1166. and said,

  1167. do not

  1168. go down

  1169. to Egypt.

  1170. Dwell

  1171. in the

  1172. land

  1173. for which

  1174. I will

  1175. tell you.

  1176. God

  1177. intervenes.

  1178. God

  1179. speaks.

  1180. God

  1181. says,

  1182. do not

  1183. fear

  1184. unless a

  1185. person is

  1186. afraid.

  1187. And yet

  1188. when you go

  1189. through the

  1190. scriptures,

  1191. you see him

  1192. saying it to

  1193. so many

  1194. people,

  1195. to Joshua,

  1196. to David.

  1197. You can

  1198. carry on and

  1199. go through the

  1200. scriptures and

  1201. find so many

  1202. people who

  1203. are afraid,

  1204. and yet the

  1205. Lord says,

  1206. do not be

  1207. afraid,

  1208. afraid.

  1209. Because he

  1210. knows the

  1211. fear that his

  1212. people have.

  1213. And so we

  1214. too, we

  1215. will have

  1216. fears.

  1217. And how do

  1218. we react

  1219. in fear?

  1220. We take

  1221. things into

  1222. our own

  1223. hands,

  1224. just like

  1225. Isaac.

  1226. We seek

  1227. to do

  1228. things our

  1229. own way.

  1230. We sometimes

  1231. maybe even

  1232. tell lies,

  1233. like Isaac

  1234. did about

  1235. his wife

  1236. Rebecca.

  1237. We react

  1238. in all

  1239. these different

  1240. kinds of

  1241. ways in

  1242. the midst

  1243. of our

  1244. fear,

  1245. instead of

  1246. turning to

  1247. God.

  1248. We ought

  1249. to take

  1250. our fears

  1251. to the

  1252. Lord,

  1253. take it

  1254. to him

  1255. in prayer.

  1256. Isaac

  1257. didn't do

  1258. it because

  1259. he was an

  1260. ordinary

  1261. person like

  1262. you and

  1263. I.

  1264. He reacted

  1265. in the

  1266. same way

  1267. we do

  1268. so often.

  1269. Instead of

  1270. turning to

  1271. God,

  1272. we'll sort

  1273. it out

  1274. ourselves.

  1275. But he

  1276. says,

  1277. do not

  1278. be afraid.

  1279. We looked

  1280. at the

  1281. passage

  1282. John 14

  1283. a few

  1284. weeks ago.

  1285. A passage

  1286. that speaks

  1287. to Jesus

  1288. speaking to

  1289. his disciples

  1290. about their

  1291. fears.

  1292. He's saying,

  1293. let not

  1294. your hearts

  1295. be troubled.

  1296. He tells

  1297. them,

  1298. do not

  1299. be afraid

  1300. because

  1301. they are.

  1302. They're afraid

  1303. of what the

  1304. future holds.

  1305. They're afraid

  1306. of everything

  1307. that's happening

  1308. in their lives

  1309. at that point.

  1310. But Jesus

  1311. says,

  1312. do not

  1313. be afraid.

  1314. We have

  1315. to turn

  1316. to God

  1317. and his

  1318. promises.

  1319. So often

  1320. he says,

  1321. do not

  1322. be afraid

  1323. for I

  1324. am with

  1325. you.

  1326. The

  1327. comforter

  1328. comes

  1329. alongside.

  1330. We have

  1331. our fears

  1332. but how

  1333. do we

  1334. respond

  1335. in them?

  1336. Take

  1337. them

  1338. to God.

  1339. That is

  1340. what we're

  1341. learning here

  1342. from Isaac.

  1343. Our first

  1344. port of call,

  1345. even before

  1346. God has

  1347. to stop

  1348. us in

  1349. our tracks

  1350. should be

  1351. to take

  1352. everything

  1353. to the

  1354. Lord

  1355. in prayer.

  1356. Third thing

  1357. we see here

  1358. about Isaac

  1359. is,

  1360. Isaac had

  1361. sinned

  1362. like ordinary

  1363. people.

  1364. When you

  1365. hear the

  1366. phrase

  1367. of God

  1368. of Abraham,

  1369. Isaac,

  1370. and Jacob,

  1371. you almost

  1372. think,

  1373. well they

  1374. must have

  1375. been a

  1376. class above

  1377. everybody

  1378. else.

  1379. They

  1380. must have

  1381. been without

  1382. sin.

  1383. But no

  1384. one is

  1385. without sin.

  1386. They are

  1387. sinners like

  1388. you and

  1389. I.

  1390. We are

  1391. all

  1392. sinners

  1393. before

  1394. God.

  1395. And you

  1396. see the

  1397. sin of

  1398. Isaac here,

  1399. the sin

  1400. of disobedience,

  1401. the sin

  1402. of doing

  1403. things in

  1404. his own

  1405. way,

  1406. the sin

  1407. of telling

  1408. lies to

  1409. those around

  1410. him.

  1411. You see

  1412. it here

  1413. again and

  1414. again.

  1415. And

  1416. sometimes

  1417. the enemy

  1418. gets us

  1419. thinking that

  1420. God cannot

  1421. use us

  1422. if this

  1423. is the

  1424. way we

  1425. are.

  1426. My

  1427. life just

  1428. seems to

  1429. be full

  1430. of sin.

  1431. Just one

  1432. sin after

  1433. another.

  1434. And yet

  1435. here and

  1436. so often

  1437. through

  1438. scripture you

  1439. see God

  1440. using people,

  1441. ordinary

  1442. people,

  1443. whose lives

  1444. have so many

  1445. sins and

  1446. yet God

  1447. can use

  1448. them.

  1449. One minute

  1450. you can be

  1451. sitting in

  1452. church,

  1453. you're

  1454. listening to

  1455. God's

  1456. word and

  1457. you're

  1458. singing

  1459. God's

  1460. praise.

  1461. And the

  1462. next minute

  1463. some kind

  1464. of horrible

  1465. thought comes

  1466. into your

  1467. mind.

  1468. And you're

  1469. thinking to

  1470. yourself,

  1471. I can't

  1472. be holy.

  1473. There's just

  1474. so much

  1475. sin in my

  1476. life,

  1477. in my

  1478. heart.

  1479. God

  1480. can't use

  1481. me to

  1482. do anything

  1483. for him.

  1484. I have

  1485. to purify

  1486. myself,

  1487. I have to

  1488. be perfect

  1489. before God

  1490. before I

  1491. can possibly

  1492. be used

  1493. by him.

  1494. Perfect

  1495. just like

  1496. Abraham,

  1497. Isaac and

  1498. Jacob were.

  1499. But they

  1500. weren't.

  1501. And neither

  1502. will you

  1503. or I

  1504. be perfect,

  1505. but it

  1506. doesn't mean

  1507. God can't

  1508. use us.

  1509. It doesn't

  1510. mean God

  1511. can't bless

  1512. us.

  1513. Isaac

  1514. was an

  1515. ordinary man

  1516. who had

  1517. sin in

  1518. his life.

  1519. You and

  1520. I are

  1521. ordinary

  1522. people who

  1523. have sin

  1524. in our

  1525. lives too.

  1526. God

  1527. is

  1528. perfect.

  1529. And you

  1530. look through

  1531. Scripture and

  1532. that's what

  1533. you see

  1534. again and

  1535. again.

  1536. Remember the

  1537. Bible is

  1538. about people.

  1539. It's showing

  1540. us people

  1541. in all the

  1542. realities of

  1543. life,

  1544. in all the

  1545. different

  1546. experiences of

  1547. life.

  1548. There is no

  1549. one perfect

  1550. because

  1551. Christ alone

  1552. is perfect.

  1553. perfect.

  1554. And we

  1555. all need

  1556. Christ for

  1557. our sin.

  1558. And that's

  1559. what we

  1560. are learning.

  1561. Isaac had

  1562. to depend

  1563. on God.

  1564. In the

  1565. midst of his

  1566. disobedience,

  1567. in the

  1568. midst of his

  1569. sin, he

  1570. is called

  1571. back to

  1572. God.

  1573. The Lord

  1574. appeared to

  1575. him and

  1576. says in

  1577. verse 2,

  1578. Do not

  1579. go down

  1580. to Egypt.

  1581. Dwell in

  1582. the land

  1583. which I

  1584. shall tell

  1585. you.

  1586. Listen to

  1587. the Lord,

  1588. he is

  1589. saying.

  1590. And that's

  1591. what God

  1592. says to

  1593. us as

  1594. well.

  1595. Let us

  1596. listen to

  1597. what God

  1598. is saying.

  1599. Let us

  1600. stop what

  1601. we are

  1602. doing and

  1603. trying to

  1604. do things

  1605. ourselves to

  1606. sort our

  1607. own sin

  1608. out because

  1609. we cannot.

  1610. Instead,

  1611. we have to

  1612. listen to

  1613. God.

  1614. we all

  1615. have sin

  1616. in our

  1617. lives.

  1618. That leads

  1619. us to the

  1620. fourth thing

  1621. and the

  1622. final thing

  1623. here.

  1624. Everyone

  1625. can have

  1626. hope.

  1627. Isaac

  1628. had hope

  1629. like ordinary

  1630. people too.

  1631. And that's

  1632. the wonder

  1633. of God's

  1634. word.

  1635. It reminds

  1636. us of

  1637. the fact

  1638. that we're

  1639. sinners,

  1640. the fact

  1641. that we

  1642. will have

  1643. trials,

  1644. the fact

  1645. that we

  1646. are

  1647. disobedient.

  1648. It reminds

  1649. us of

  1650. all of

  1651. these

  1652. things.

  1653. But it

  1654. speaks to

  1655. us as

  1656. an ordinary

  1657. people who

  1658. need an

  1659. extraordinary

  1660. God.

  1661. We need

  1662. him in

  1663. our lives.

  1664. Claire Booth,

  1665. an author

  1666. in America,

  1667. she once

  1668. said,

  1669. there are

  1670. no hopeless

  1671. situations.

  1672. There are

  1673. only people

  1674. who have

  1675. grown hopeless

  1676. about

  1677. them.

  1678. But we

  1679. can say

  1680. to ourselves,

  1681. but how

  1682. can anybody

  1683. say that

  1684. there is

  1685. no hopeless

  1686. situation?

  1687. Because so

  1688. many of our

  1689. situations in

  1690. life,

  1691. they seem

  1692. hopeless.

  1693. They seem

  1694. like nothing

  1695. is going to

  1696. change our

  1697. situation.

  1698. but no

  1699. situation is

  1700. hopeless

  1701. with God.

  1702. Because as

  1703. we look to

  1704. God's word,

  1705. to the

  1706. gospel,

  1707. it gives

  1708. us hope.

  1709. And it's

  1710. not just a

  1711. hope for

  1712. now.

  1713. Because we

  1714. need a

  1715. greater

  1716. perspective

  1717. of who

  1718. God is

  1719. and what

  1720. the plans

  1721. are for

  1722. his people.

  1723. We need

  1724. to look

  1725. at things

  1726. in an

  1727. eternal

  1728. perspective.

  1729. that all

  1730. of God's

  1731. people have

  1732. hope.

  1733. Our

  1734. situation

  1735. today may

  1736. not change.

  1737. It may

  1738. not go

  1739. the way

  1740. that we

  1741. want it

  1742. to go.

  1743. And the

  1744. greatest

  1745. fear we

  1746. have in

  1747. life,

  1748. the greatest

  1749. pain that

  1750. we have

  1751. in life,

  1752. is a fear

  1753. and the

  1754. pain of

  1755. death.

  1756. But God's

  1757. people have

  1758. hope in

  1759. that.

  1760. And that

  1761. is what we

  1762. have to

  1763. look to.

  1764. hope in

  1765. God.

  1766. We have

  1767. ordinary

  1768. fears in

  1769. life.

  1770. We have

  1771. ordinary

  1772. sins in

  1773. our life.

  1774. All ordinary

  1775. people have

  1776. all of

  1777. these things.

  1778. But as we

  1779. look to

  1780. God's

  1781. word, we

  1782. have hope.

  1783. And that

  1784. is what

  1785. God offered

  1786. to Isaac.

  1787. And it's

  1788. what God

  1789. offers to

  1790. all of

  1791. his people.

  1792. hope.

  1793. Because he

  1794. says that

  1795. he will

  1796. give him

  1797. a land

  1798. to dwell

  1799. in.

  1800. He says

  1801. he will

  1802. give him

  1803. a place

  1804. of promise.

  1805. He will

  1806. promise him

  1807. that he

  1808. will be

  1809. with him

  1810. in all

  1811. of these

  1812. things.

  1813. But above

  1814. all, he

  1815. promises him

  1816. this,

  1817. life

  1818. eternal.

  1819. will

  1820. be

  1821. a

  1822. gospel.

  1823. It's

  1824. a word

  1825. of hope.

  1826. A word

  1827. that we

  1828. find so

  1829. often

  1830. throughout

  1831. the

  1832. scriptures.

  1833. Psalm

    Psalms 130:5

  1834. 130

  1835. verse 5

  1836. says,

  1837. I wait

  1838. for the

  1839. Lord,

  1840. my soul

  1841. waits,

  1842. and in

  1843. his

  1844. word,

  1845. I

  1846. hope

  1847. that

  1848. all

  1849. his

  1850. word

  1851. will

  1852. be

  1853. fulfilled.

  1854. Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 29:11

  1855. 29

  1856. verse 11,

  1857. I know

  1858. the plans

  1859. I have

  1860. for you,

  1861. declares

  1862. the Lord.

  1863. Plans

  1864. for welfare

  1865. and not

  1866. for evil,

  1867. to give

  1868. you a

  1869. future

  1870. and a

  1871. hope.

  1872. Paul,

  1873. in 1

    1 Corinthians 2 chapter mention

  1874. Corinthians

  1875. chapter 2,

  1876. speaks about

  1877. the hope

  1878. that we

  1879. look to.

  1880. He says,

  1881. but as it

  1882. is written,

  1883. what no eye

  1884. has seen,

  1885. nor ear

  1886. heard,

  1887. nor the

  1888. heart of

  1889. man

  1890. imagined,

  1891. what God

  1892. has prepared

  1893. for those

  1894. who love

  1895. him.

  1896. What we

  1897. have to

  1898. hope for

  1899. in

  1900. eternity.

  1901. Titus

    Titus 1:2

  1902. 1

  1903. verse 2,

  1904. in hope

  1905. of eternal

  1906. life,

  1907. which God

  1908. who never

  1909. lies,

  1910. promised

  1911. before

  1912. the

  1913. ages

  1914. began.

  1915. There

  1916. is hope

  1917. found

  1918. in the

  1919. gospel.

  1920. Hope

  1921. not just

  1922. for today,

  1923. but for

  1924. all

  1925. eternity.

  1926. Isaac

  1927. was stopped

  1928. by God.

  1929. He remained

  1930. in Gerard.

  1931. He was

  1932. faithful to

  1933. God,

  1934. even in

  1935. his ongoing

  1936. faults.

  1937. But this

  1938. ordinary man

  1939. knew the

  1940. blessings of

  1941. an

  1942. extraordinary

  1943. God.

  1944. And when

  1945. you read

  1946. of him

  1947. in the

  1948. New

  1949. Testament,

  1950. when you

  1951. read that

  1952. phrase in

  1953. the New

  1954. Testament,

  1955. the Lord,

  1956. the God

  1957. of Abraham,

  1958. the God

  1959. of Isaac,

  1960. and the

  1961. God of

  1962. Jacob,

  1963. listen to

  1964. this as

  1965. it says

  1966. in Luke

    Luke 20:37

  1967. 20 verse

  1968. 37,

  1969. where it

  1970. is speaking

  1971. about the

  1972. resurrection.

  1973. but that

  1974. the dead

  1975. are raised,

  1976. even Moses

  1977. showed in

  1978. the passage

  1979. about the

  1980. bush,

  1981. where he

  1982. calls the

  1983. Lord,

  1984. the God

  1985. of Abraham,

  1986. the God

  1987. of Isaac,

  1988. and the

  1989. God of

  1990. Jacob.

  1991. Now he

  1992. is not

  1993. the God

  1994. of the

  1995. dead,

  1996. but of

  1997. the living,

  1998. and for

  1999. all to

  2000. live to

  2001. him.

  2002. Isaac

  2003. had died,

  2004. and yet

  2005. he is

  2006. described

  2007. there as

  2008. the son

  2009. of the

  2010. living God,

  2011. but also

  2012. alive in

  2013. him.

  2014. And that

  2015. is the

  2016. hope that

  2017. the Christian

  2018. has.

  2019. Hope not

  2020. just for

  2021. now,

  2022. when everything

  2023. seems hopeless

  2024. in our eyes,

  2025. but hope

  2026. for all

  2027. eternity.

  2028. In God's

  2029. wisdom,

  2030. sometimes he

  2031. doesn't change

  2032. the situation

  2033. that we're

  2034. in,

  2035. but he

  2036. gives us

  2037. a different

  2038. perspective.

  2039. And that's

  2040. what we

  2041. find as

  2042. we look

  2043. to God's

  2044. word,

  2045. as we

  2046. look to

  2047. Abraham

  2048. and Isaac

  2049. and Jacob,

  2050. as we

  2051. look to

  2052. Isaac here

  2053. in this

  2054. passage,

  2055. one who

  2056. had his

  2057. faults,

  2058. who had

  2059. his fears,

  2060. who had

  2061. his sins,

  2062. and yet

  2063. had hope.

  2064. Isaac

  2065. Watts

  2066. says in

  2067. the hymn,

  2068. O God,

  2069. our help

  2070. of ages

  2071. past.

  2072. He

  2073. says,

  2074. O God,

  2075. our help

  2076. of ages

  2077. past,

  2078. our hope

  2079. for years

  2080. to come.

  2081. Be thou

  2082. our guide

  2083. while life

  2084. shall last

  2085. and our

  2086. eternal

  2087. home.

  2088. The hope

  2089. of the

  2090. Christian

  2091. that despite

  2092. our fears,

  2093. despite

  2094. our sins,

  2095. that in

  2096. Christ we

  2097. are one

  2098. who has

  2099. promised

  2100. eternal

  2101. life,

  2102. who gives

  2103. us hope,

  2104. but we

  2105. have to

  2106. heed his

  2107. word.

  2108. God's

  2109. word is

  2110. before us

  2111. today.

  2112. It's a

  2113. book of

  2114. theology.

  2115. It's a

  2116. book all

  2117. about God,

  2118. all about

  2119. Jesus,

  2120. all about

  2121. salvation,

  2122. about all

  2123. of these

  2124. things.

  2125. But it's a

  2126. book about

  2127. ordinary

  2128. people.

  2129. It's a

  2130. book for

  2131. ordinary

  2132. people,

  2133. like you

  2134. and me,

  2135. to hear

  2136. what God

  2137. is saying

  2138. to us,

  2139. that we

  2140. have all

  2141. of these

  2142. ordinary

  2143. things in

  2144. our

  2145. experience.

  2146. Ordinary

  2147. trials,

  2148. ordinary

  2149. fears,

  2150. sins of

  2151. ordinary

  2152. people.

  2153. But it

  2154. reminds us

  2155. that as

  2156. ordinary

  2157. people,

  2158. we have

  2159. hope,

  2160. and that

  2161. that hope

  2162. is in

  2163. God and

  2164. in Christ

  2165. Jesus.

  2166. May we

  2167. know that

  2168. hope

  2169. ourselves,

  2170. and come,

  2171. and in all

  2172. our circumstances,

  2173. lean on

  2174. God's word

  2175. for us.

  2176. He knows

  2177. every one

  2178. of us.

  2179. He speaks

  2180. to us

  2181. individually

  2182. about a

  2183. Saviour

  2184. for us

  2185. all.

  2186. Let us

  2187. pray.

  2188. Our

  2189. Father in

  2190. heaven,

  2191. we bless

  2192. you for

  2193. your word.

  2194. It speaks

  2195. to us,

  2196. and we

  2197. pray today,

  2198. Lord,

  2199. that we

  2200. will hear

  2201. what you

  2202. say to

  2203. us,

  2204. that we

  2205. will

  2206. experience

  2207. the

  2208. goodness

  2209. of God,

  2210. that we

  2211. will

  2212. experience

  2213. that

  2214. blessing

  2215. of knowing

  2216. Christ

  2217. Jesus

  2218. as our

  2219. Lord,

  2220. that you

  2221. will

  2222. still

  2223. our

  2224. fears

  2225. and help

  2226. us to

  2227. bring them

  2228. to you,

  2229. and that we

  2230. would know

  2231. your peace

  2232. upon us,

  2233. as we ask

  2234. it all in

  2235. Jesus' name.

  2236. Amen.

  2237. We'll

  2238. conclude by

  2239. singing to

  2240. God's praise

  2241. in Psalm

  2242. 10,

  2243. in the

  2244. Sing

  2245. Psalms

  2246. version.

  2247. Psalm

  2248. 10,

  2249. on page

  2250. 12 of

  2251. the

  2252. Psalm

  2253. books.

  2254. We're

  2255. going to

  2256. sing from

  2257. verse 16

  2258. down to

  2259. the end

  2260. of the

  2261. Psalm.

  2262. Psalm

  2263. 10 at

  2264. verse 16,

  2265. The Lord

  2266. will ever

  2267. reign as

  2268. king,

  2269. his throne

  2270. will always

  2271. stand,

  2272. for he,

  2273. the nations

  2274. of the

  2275. world,

  2276. will perish

  2277. from his

  2278. hand.

  2279. O Lord,

  2280. the needy

  2281. ones desire,

  2282. you answer

  2283. from on

  2284. high,

  2285. you give

  2286. encouragement

  2287. to them

  2288. and listen

  2289. to their

  2290. cry.

  2291. We'll

  2292. sing from

  2293. verse 16

  2294. to the

  2295. end of

  2296. the

  2297. psalm,

  2298. to God's

  2299. praise.

  2300. The

  2301. Lord

  2302. will

  2303. ever

  2304. reign

  2305. as

  2306. king,

  2307. his

  2308. throne

  2309. will

  2310. always

  2311. stand,

  2312. the

  2313. he,

  2314. the

  2315. nations

  2316. of

  2317. the

  2318. world,

  2319. will

  2320. perish

  2321. from

  2322. his

  2323. land.

  2324. O

  2325. Lord,

  2326. the

  2327. needy

  2328. ones

  2329. desire,

  2330. you

  2331. answer

  2332. from

  2333. on

  2334. high,

  2335. you

  2336. give

  2337. encouragement

  2338. to

  2339. them

  2340. and

  2341. listen

  2342. to

  2343. their

  2344. cry.

  2345. For

  2346. you

  2347. defend

  2348. the

  2349. fatherless

  2350. and

  2351. those

  2352. who

  2353. are

  2354. oppressed,

  2355. so

  2356. that

  2357. from

  2358. fear

  2359. of

  2360. mortal

  2361. man

  2362. help

  2363. and

  2364. sing

  2365. the

  2366. rest.

  2367. After the

  2368. benediction,

2369. I'll go to the door to my left.

2370. We'll close with the benediction.

  2371. Now may grace,

  2372. mercy,

  2373. and peace from God,

  2374. Father,

  2375. Son,

  2376. and Holy Spirit

2377. rest upon and abide with you all,

  2378. now and forevermore.

  2379. Amen.

  2380. Amen.

  2381. Amen.

  2382. Amen.

  2383. Amen.

  2384. Amen.

  2385. Amen.

  2386. Amen.

  2387. Amen.

  2388. Amen.

  2389. Amen.

  2390. Amen.

  2391. Amen.

  2392. Amen.

  2393. Amen.

  2394. Amen.

  2395. Amen.

  2396. Amen.
