  10. And we'll stand to sing, if we can.

  11. God is our refuge and our strength.

  32. Most high hath his afford

  33. God in the midst of heart doth dwell

  34. Nothing shall her remove

  35. The Lord to have and help us well

  36. And that right there he flew

  37. And that right there he flew

  38. And that right there he flew

  39. And that right there he flew

  40. The heathen rage to much us see

  41. The kingdoms move and where

  42. The kingdoms move and where

  43. The Lord God God direct his voice

  44. The earth is meant for fear

  45. The earth is meant for fear

  46. The earth is meant for fear

  47. We'll join together in a short word of prayer

  48. Let us pray to God

  49. Our Father in heaven

  50. We ask that we would know your peace

  51. As we come to you

  52. That you would still our hearts

  53. That we would be quiet

  54. And know the quietness of your presence

  55. So that we would hear your voice

  56. And it would speak to us

  57. And as we come to your word

  58. May we know the riches of it

  59. And we pray for the young ones that are here with us

  60. We thank you for them

  61. We thank you for them

  62. It enriches and it brings joy to their heart

  63. To see children coming and singing praises to God

  64. That they may learn of your ways

  65. And learn all about Jesus Christ

  66. Learn of the biblical stories

  67. And the power of God

  68. And the authority that he has over all creation

  69. God created us

  70. And God made us so that we may bring forth his glory

  71. And that we may know what he has given to us

  72. In Jesus Christ

  73. Jesus came and died for us on the cross

  74. And that through that

  75. We can enter into heaven

  76. And we can be with God

  77. And we have the right to call God our Father

  78. A loving Father that looks after us

  79. A loving Father that always hears us when we cry to him

  80. And so we have confidence when we come to you in prayer

  81. That you will listen to us

  82. And that you will hear our voice

  83. So Lord we just ask

  84. Bless us in the gathering of your people

  85. In this time and this hour

  86. Bless the children as they go into Sunday school

  87. And tweenies and creche

  88. That they may hear of the beauty of God

  89. And the wonders of Jesus Christ

  90. All this we ask in your name

  91. Amen

  92. Just a short word to the boys and girls

  93. Before you go into Sunday school

  94. Holiday twinies and creche

  95. Have you ever seen them before?

  96. Do you know what they are?

  97. Sweeties

  98. Do you like them?

  99. We love sweeties

  100. We love sweeties

  101. We love sweeties

  102. And supposing there were seven sweeties in here

  103. Supposing I had to go out one, two, three, four, five, six, seven

  104. And I left them all there

  105. And I said well you can have six of them

  106. But I want you to leave one of them

  107. It would be very hard to leave one wouldn't it?

  108. You'd eat this one

  109. Yummy

  110. You'd eat the two

  111. Oh that was good

  112. You'd eat the three, four, five, six

  113. You'd eat them all

  114. I think that was great

  115. I love them sweeties

  116. It tastes so good

  117. But there'd be one left

  118. And you'd be looking at it

  119. You'd be thinking hmm

  120. Will I eat that one?

  121. I've not meant to eat that one

  122. But what we do is

  123. We love these sweeties

  124. And we think well

  125. No one will notice

  126. I'll just slip it in my mouth

  127. And I'll enjoy it too

  128. Yeah, that's what we do isn't it?

  129. We're tempted by these things

  130. And it's very like what we do with the days that we have

  131. God has given us six days

  132. And then one day is for God

  133. That's one day where we come to church

  134. But what we do

  135. And what people do

  136. And what we like to do

  137. Is to do all the things that we want to do

  138. Even on God's day

  139. Just like the sweeties

  140. We enjoy doing all the things we love doing

  141. Through the week

  142. The days were Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday

  143. And then Sunday

  144. We have to give that to God

  145. But it's pleasing to God

  146. To come and remember his day

  147. To give God his day

  148. That we come to church

  149. And we learn all about God

  150. Because it's good for us

  151. Too many sweets aren't good for us

  152. No

  153. But God knows that it is good for us

  154. To have a day set apart

  155. Where we come and worship God

  156. It's good for children

  157. And it's good for grown-ups

  158. To have a rest on Sunday

  159. And to give our time

  160. To thinking about all that God has done for us

  161. The hardest thing to give is our time

  162. Because we want to do all the things

  163. We're so busy

  164. But God asks us

  165. To give us time

  166. To share our time

  167. With him

  168. Because he wants to share time with us too

  169. And that's what happens on Sunday

  170. When we come to God

  171. That we share our time

  172. And that he would share time with us

  173. So we'll say the Lord's prayer together

  174. Before we go through

  175. Our Father

  176. Which art in heaven

  177. Hallowed be thy name

  178. Thy kingdom come

  179. Thy will be done on earth

  180. As it is in heaven

  181. Give us this day our daily bread

  182. And forgive us our debts

  183. As we forgive our debtors

  184. Lead us not into temptation

  185. But deliver us from evil

  186. For thine is the kingdom

  187. The power and the glory

  188. Forever

  189. Thank you for listening to me

  190. Now we'll continue by singing

  191. In our praise to God

  192. In Psalm 36

  193. Of the Sing Psalms version

  194. Psalm 36

  195. In the Sing Psalms

  196. You'll find that on page 44

  197. Of the blue book

  198. Singing from verse mark 7

  199. Through to verse mark 12

  200. How precious is your steadfast love

  201. What confidence it brings

  202. Both high and low find shelter

  203. In the shadow of your wings

  204. They feast within your house

  205. And drink from streams of your delight

  206. For with you is the source of life

  207. In your light we see light

  208. To those who know you as their God

  209. Your steadfast love impart

  210. Maintain your righteousness

  211. To those of pure and upright heart

  212. Let not the ruthless foot of pride

  213. Approach and threaten me

  214. Nor let the hand of wickedness

  215. Force me to turn and flee

  216. See where these evildoers lie

  217. Who righteousness despise

  218. Thrown down they are

  219. And there they stay

  220. Unable to rise

  221. God's steadfast love to us

  222. God's protection of his people

  223. From the wicked

  224. And that he will ultimately

  225. Cast them down

  226. That they will not rise up

  227. So we'll stand to sing

  228. To God's praise from verse 7

  229. How precious is your steadfast love

  230. To the tune Jackson

  231. How precious is your steadfast love

  232. What confidence it brings

  233. What high and low find shelter in

  234. The shadow of your wings

  235. The shadow of your wings

  236. They feast within your house and drink

  237. From streams of pure delight

  238. For with you is the source of light

  239. For with you is the source of light

  240. Find shelter in the shadow of your wings

  241. To the tune of your wings

  242. To the tune of your wings

  243. They feast within your house and drink

  244. From streams of pure delight

  245. For with you is the source of light

  246. In your light we see light

  247. To the tune of your wings

  248. To those who know

  249. To those who know you past

  250. God, you steadfast love impart, maintain your righteousness to those of pure and upright

  251. Let not the ruthless fruit of pride approach and threaten me

  252. Nor let the hand of wickedness force me to turn and flee

  253. See where these people doers lie, who righteousness despise

  254. Roadmen are red and their lives still are able to abide

  255. Turn now to a reading from scripture and we'll find that in the Gospel of Mark chapter 1

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  256. Gospel of Mark chapter 1 and we'll read it from verse Mark 14 through to the end of that chapter

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  257. Gospel of Mark chapter 1 reading from verse Mark 14

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  258. Let us hear God's word

  259. Now after John was arrested, John the Baptist, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the Gospel of God and saying

  260. The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand

  261. Repent and believe in the Gospel

  262. Passing alongside the sea of Galilee

  263. He saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon

  264. Casting a net into the sea for they were fishermen

  265. And Jesus said to them

  266. Follow me and I will make you become fishers of men

  267. And immediately they left their nets and followed him

  268. And going on a little further he saw James the son of Zebedee

  269. And John his brother

  270. Who were in their boat mending the nets

  271. And immediately he called them

  272. And they left their father Zebedee in the boat

  273. With the hired servants and followed him

  274. And they went into Capernaum

  275. And immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching

  276. And they were astonished at his teaching

  277. For he taught them as one who had authority

  278. And not as the scribes

  279. And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit

  280. And he cried out

  281. What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?

  282. Have you come to destroy us?

  283. I know who you are

  284. I know who you are

  285. The Holy One of God

  286. But Jesus rebuked him saying

  287. Be silent and come out of him

  288. And the unclean spirit convulsing him

  289. And crying out with a loud voice came out of him

  290. And they were all amazed

  291. So they questioned among themselves saying

  292. What is this?

  293. A new teaching with authority

  294. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him

  295. And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout

  296. And all the surrounding region of Galilee

  297. And immediately he left the synagogue and entered into the house of Simon and Andrew

  298. With James and John

  299. Now Simon's mother-in-law lay ill with a fever

  300. And immediately they told him about her

  301. And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up

  302. And the fever left her

  303. And she began to serve them

  304. That evening at sunset

  305. They brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons

  306. And the whole city was gathered together at the door

  307. And he healed many who were sick with various diseases

  308. And cast out many demons

  309. And he would not permit the demons to speak

  310. Because they knew him

  311. And rising very early in the morning

  312. While it was still dark

  313. He departed

  314. And went out to a desolate place

  315. And there he prayed

  316. And Simon and those who were with him

  317. Searched for him

  318. And they found him and said to him

  319. Everyone is looking for you

  320. And he said to them

  321. Let us go on to the next towns

  322. That I may preach there also

  323. For that is what I came for

  324. And he went throughout Galilee

  325. Preaching in their synagogues

  326. And casting out demons

  327. And a leper came to him

  328. And imploding him

  329. And kneeling said to him

  330. If you will

  331. You can make me clean

  332. Moved with pity

  333. He stretched out his hand

  334. And touched him

  335. And said to him

  336. I will

  337. Be clean

  338. And immediately the leprosy left him

  339. And he was made clean

  340. And Jesus sternly charged him

  341. And sent him away at once

  342. And said to him

  343. See that you say nothing to anyone

  344. But go

  345. Show yourself to the priest

  346. And offer for your cleansing

  347. What Moses commanded

  348. For a proof to them

  349. But he went out

  350. And began to talk freely about it

  351. And to spread the news

  352. So that Jesus could no longer

  353. Openly enter a town

  354. But was out in desolate places

  355. Where people were coming to him

  356. From every quarter

  357. Amen

  358. May the reading of God's word

  359. Be a blessing to those

  360. Who hear it this day

  361. May we join again

  362. In prayer before God

  363. Our Father in heaven

  364. We give thanks that we are here

  365. On this day

  366. On your day

  367. A day in where we will remember

  368. The power of your resurrection

  369. A day where we find out

  370. Found out that the tomb was empty

  371. The grave cloths had been folded

  372. Signifying your return

  373. And return you did

  374. And as we read there in the passage

  375. The people were astonished even

  376. At your teaching

  377. And they wondered

  378. What is this?

  379. But you revealed to them

  380. Things that were kept for secret

  381. Of the Old Testament

  382. And you fulfilled the Old Testament

  383. Through your life

  384. And you showed forth

  385. The ways of God

  386. And the glory of God

  387. And the power of God

  388. And the authority of God

  389. That you were indeed

  390. Undoubtedly

  391. The son of God

  392. When we look at you

  393. We see the characteristics of God

  394. We learn about God

  395. And so let us

  396. Have our focus upon you

  397. This morning

  398. That we may see the riches

  399. Of your glory

  400. That we may understand

  401. What is set before the people

  402. Who have faith in you

  403. And trust in you

  404. That they will be in your presence

  405. And it is a wonder

  406. That you would have us

  407. And that you would listen to us

  408. When we come and pray to you

  409. That we seem so insignificant

  410. In our eyes

  411. That you would be mindful

  412. Of me

  413. That you would be mindful

  414. Of each one of us

  415. That is gathered here

  416. But so you are

  417. We know it from your word

  418. And we know it

  419. That you speak to us

  420. Each individually

  421. In the mysterious outworkings

  422. Of your ways

  423. We know it to be true

  424. And we are

  425. With confidence

  426. Draw near to you

  427. This morning

  428. To hear you speak

  429. That we may learn of you

  430. And know your direction

  431. That you would show us your paths

  432. The paths in which we are

  433. To walk our lives

  434. The ways in which we are

  435. To be obedient to you

  436. And how we are

  437. To bring glory to you

  438. That we may know

  439. What are calling us

  440. In this life

  441. And that may it

  442. Bring forth

  443. The riches of your fruit

  444. Things that are heavenly

  445. Not of this world

  446. Things that are pure

  447. And undefiled

  448. Things that are rich

  449. And everlasting

  450. Lord

  451. We bring before you

  452. The expectations

  453. Of the week ahead

  454. That we may draw to you

  455. Prayerfully

  456. Seeking your presence

  457. With us

  458. That we as your people

  459. May come with joyous hearts

  460. Remembering

  461. All that you have done for us

  462. In your death

  463. And resurrection

  464. And that it will be a source of strength

  465. For the Christian

  466. That is weak

  467. A source of encouragement

  468. For those who are downcast

  469. That we may come

  470. And sit at your feet

  471. Like Mary did

  472. That we would not be busy

  473. With the things of the world

  474. Like Martha

  475. That we would choose the good part

  476. That we would be wise

  477. To give of our time

  478. As we said to the young ones

  479. That we would be willing

  480. To be willing

  481. And come with willingness

  482. To sacrifice the time

  483. And to give pleasingly

  484. Cheerfully

  485. Our time

  486. And that you may bless us in it

  487. For we know it is good

  488. To sit at your feet

  489. To hear your word

  490. To know your ways

  491. And to remember

  492. What you have done for us

  493. What you have done for us

  494. Otherwise

  495. Without it

  496. We would be lost

  497. We would have no hope

  498. Without the death of Christ

  499. But you give us hope

  500. And you are

  501. An anchor in our lives

  502. When we have no hope

  503. To whom else can we go

  504. That we can turn with confidence to you

  505. You are the one

  506. You are the one that holds us

  507. You are the one that carries us at times

  508. And it is in you

  509. That we place our faith and trust

  510. In the days ahead

  511. And our lives

  512. Whatever is set before us

  513. We commit to you

  514. Faithfully

  515. Lord we just pray

  516. That you would be mindful of each of us

  517. In our circumstances

  518. Those who have difficulties in life

  519. Those who have difficulties of health

  520. We pray that you would draw near to them

  521. And be their strength and comfort

  522. Give them assurances from your word

  523. May your presence be ever felt in their hearts

  524. And knowing that you are with them by their side

  525. We pray for those who mourn

  526. Be their comforter

  527. May they know your loving arms

  528. Wrapped around them

  529. As the loving fatherly arms

  530. Of the heavenly father

  531. Draws near calling you to come

  532. And be embraced by his love

  533. We pray for those who are on mission for you

  534. Who seek to go out into this world

  535. And reveal to people that are hidden in the darkness

  536. The light of the gospel

  537. We remember Muriel in Cambodia

  538. And the work that she does with the girls in that area

  539. We pray that you would continue with her

  540. Be a strength and may she see fruits for her labour

  541. As she sows the seed

  542. May she see it grows in the hearts of many

  543. Remember Kenny John's work in Uganda

  544. And across Africa

  545. God is good

  546. Remember the schools that have been established

  547. They are in the clinics

  548. That it may bring forth questions from people

  549. And wondering why such a man would do these things

  550. And yet it is the love of Christ within him

  551. That drives him to give of himself

  552. And to care for his fellow beings

  553. And to share the gospel message

  554. Lord we pray

  555. That you would be with us

  556. As we come to your word

  557. May it be rich in our eyes

  558. May we understand what it says to us

  559. May your glory be revealed to us

  560. May we come and trust in it

  561. So be with us in our time together

  562. Keep the evil one from us

  563. Give our focus and attention

  564. To the wonder of Jesus Christ

  565. And we ask all of these things

  566. By the name and power of your son

  567. And our saviour

  568. Jesus

  569. Amen

  570. We will continue in our praise of God

  571. By singing in Psalm 9

  572. Of the Sing Psalms version

  573. From page 8

  574. Psalm 9a

  575. In the Sing Psalms version

  576. Page 8

  577. Singing from verse Mark 6

  578. Down to verse Mark 11

  579. The enemy have made their doom

  580. Destroyed eternally

  581. And you have uprooted all their towns

  582. They are lost to memory

  583. The Lord as ever reign on high

  584. His throne for judgment stands

  585. He will judge the world in righteousness

  586. With justice rule the Lamb

  587. The Lord as ever

  588. The Lord as ever

  589. The Lord as ever

  590. The Lord is the King

  591. And the Lord as ever

  592. The Lord is the King

  593. The King

  594. The King

  595. The King

  596. The King

  597. Who has saved them

  598. And destroyed eternally

  599. The enemy's threat

  600. They are lost to memory

  601. So we will stand together

  602. Singing from verse Mark 6

  603. Down to verse Mark 11

  604. To God's praise

  605. The enemy have made their doom

  606. Destroyed eternally

  607. The enemy have met their doom

  608. Destroyed eternally

  609. You have uprooted all their towns

  610. And lost to memory

  611. The enemy have met their doom

  612. Destroyed eternally

  613. You have uprooted all their towns

  614. And lost to memory

  615. The enemy have met their doom

  616. Destroyed eternally

  617. You have uprooted all their towns

  618. You have uprooted all their towns

  619. And lost to memory

  620. The Lord forever reigns on high

  621. His throne for judgment stands

  622. He'll judge the world in righteousness

  623. With justice through the lands

  624. The Lord will be a hiding place

  625. For those who are oppressed

  626. And He will be a strong defense

  627. For those who have oppressed

  628. All those who know Your name, O Lord

  629. And You their trust will play

  630. For you do not abandon those

  631. Who seek Your gracious face

  632. Sing praises to the Lord who sits

  633. Sit Zion on His throne

  634. Among the nations of the world

  635. Proclaim what He has done

  636. Turn back to the passage that we read, the Gospel of Mark.

  637. We'll consider the account there of the unclean spirit coming into the meeting on the Sabbath day in the synagogue.

  638. Particularly verses there, 24, 25.

  639. Well, the spirit cried out, what have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?

  640. Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.

  641. But Jesus rebuked him, saying, be silent and come out of him.

  642. This reading sets forth the beginning of Christ's ministry.

  643. John the Baptist has been arrested. He is in jail.

  644. Jesus has been led out to the wilderness, already to be tempted by the devil.

  645. And in that account, it tells us that he returns to Galilee, the region that is Galilee.

  646. And particularly that western coast of that region on the Sea of Galilee,

  647. where we read that he recruits his first disciples at that coast, his disciples being the fishermen.

  648. But he comes to the words of verse 15, saying to the people,

  649. The time is fulfilled, the kingdom of God is at hand.

  650. Repent and believe the Gospel.

  651. This account that we come to here in Capernaum, Capernaum,

  652. seems that it would be after, follow after the events of Cana,

  653. where Jesus went with his disciples to the wedding feast.

  654. If you can imagine, just briefly, the Sea of Galilee is like an egg-shaped, upside-down egg-shaped sea,

  655. Galilee like a lake, the River Jordan, directly north, directly south.

  656. That River Jordan's subdivision in the land, to the west is the region of Galilee.

  657. Capernaum sits at the kind of near the top of that egg-shaped lake.

  658. Out directly to the west is Cana, and directly below that, you have Nazareth, where, of course, he grew up.

  659. And we come into this passage, it seems he has gone to Cana to the wedding,

  660. and he returns to Capernaum, or Capernaum, as people say,

  661. where he enters into the synagogue, as he did on the Sabbath day,

  662. and he meets with this evil spirit, this unclean spirit,

  663. as they join together to worship in the synagogue.

  664. The people had gathered as normal on that Sabbath day,

  665. which would have been the Saturday.

  666. Forgive me if Sunday slips out of my mouth when I'm referencing the Sabbath,

  667. but it would have been the Saturday for them.

  668. Nothing is out of the ordinary for their worship.

  669. Apart from the visitor, Jesus has come with his disciples.

  670. And the practice was that they would read from the Old Testament, of course,

  671. the reading from the law, a section of the law,

  672. they would read from a section of the prophets.

  673. And if there were any visiting rabbis or teachers,

  674. they would be invited to say a word about the readings,

  675. or to take the readings.

  676. And such, we see that Jesus Christ spoke with the people as a visiting rabbi.

  677. And we read of the reaction that the people had to his words in verse 22.

  678. And they were astonished at his teaching,

  679. for he taught them as one who had authority, not as the scribes,

  680. not like the people that they knew.

  681. There was something remarkable about Jesus Christ and the way he taught.

  682. The words that he spoke came with great power.

  683. There was great authority in his words.

  684. And even when you consider that Jesus Christ came to join with the people,

  685. he had a desire to meet in the synagogue with others who had the intent desire to worship God.

  686. There's a lot in that, that Jesus Christ, Jesus himself,

  687. desired to come with the people as they met in the synagogue.

  688. And there was an immediacy about his worship.

  689. You can see there in verse 21,

  690. when they came into Capernaum,

  691. immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue.

  692. There's more, you know, it doesn't just come out of routine.

  693. It's purposeful.

  694. It's like the first thing on his mind to come and gather with the people.

  695. The other gospels tell us that it was his custom

  696. to gather in the synagogue for worship on the Sabbath.

  697. And as it was his desire to come and join with the people,

  698. as it should be for the Christians' desire,

  699. Jesus had the desire to teach them,

  700. not of the things of old,

  701. the things that were new,

  702. the powerful things of the gospel

  703. and the kingdom of God

  704. that he had insight to.

  705. And he leaves the people that were listening to him

  706. in complete awe and astonishment.

  707. They joined together to worship God

  708. and he astonished them

  709. when they grasped,

  710. when the people grasped what Jesus was saying,

  711. they couldn't believe it.

  712. And we, as we gather together to worship God,

  713. we pray

  714. that as we likewise incline our hearts

  715. with an intent to worship God,

  716. that we would be astonished

  717. by the words of Christ

  718. and that we would be in awe

  719. as we join together in worship,

  720. that we would know his presence

  721. coming to be with us,

  722. the pleasing custom

  723. that would be for the Spirit

  724. to join with his people,

  725. to reveal us things of the gospel,

  726. things that are new to us,

  727. and the richness of his words

  728. would come forth to every one of us

  729. and speak to every heart

  730. that is gathered here

  731. that would leave us

  732. in astonishment and awe

  733. of what Christ has done for us

  734. and what God has revealed to us

  735. through his word.

  736. But of course,

  737. that's not an everyday occurrence for us

  738. that we are in awe

  739. as we come to worship,

  740. nor would it have been

  741. an everyday occurrence for Jesus

  742. to come and join with them

  743. for Sunday worship,

  744. for Sabbath worship.

  745. though we wish it would be.

  746. We wish when we come

  747. to join together

  748. that we would come out

  749. astonished and amazed

  750. about what Christ has done for us,

  751. as the people were astonished

  752. when Christ spoke there.

  753. It's not always the case for us.

  754. It wasn't always the case for them

  755. that Christ was there to teach them.

  756. But the Christian can certainly say,

  757. that there have been days

  758. when that has happened.

  759. As you look back in your memory,

  760. even if you sat in the seat

  761. that you sat in,

  762. you've listened to a different preacher come,

  763. and there have been days

  764. where you can say,

  765. the Spirit was with us.

  766. Christ was here.

  767. And we have left in awe

  768. of the words that were spoken to us.

  769. This Sabbath day,

  770. where they joined together,

  771. it was a surprising day for them,

  772. because there are two distinct things

  773. that happen on that day

  774. in that worship in the synagogue.

  775. The first thing is,

  776. the demon causes disruption.

  777. The demon comes in

  778. into the middle of that service.

  779. But also,

  780. we see that the Son saves.

  781. Two points to hang our thoughts on this morning.

  782. The demon's disruption

  783. and the Son's salvation.

  784. So let us first look at the disruption

  785. that was caused in this passage.

  786. The people are astonished by Christ.

  787. And in then comes this man

  788. in verse 23.

  789. Immediately in the synagogue

  790. was a man with an unclean spirit.

  791. The timing of this

  792. is just perfect,

  793. well, typical,

  794. in a sense.

  795. Spiritual battle commences.

  796. Spiritual warfare enters into the room.

  797. As soon as people

  798. become interested in the gospel,

  799. as soon as people

  800. show wonder in Christ

  801. and question who is he,

  802. the devil's not far away.

  803. This man who is seemingly

  804. controlled by the power of the Spirit,

  805. a spirit which we read of

  806. has been unclean,

  807. could easily be translated,

  808. has been evil,

  809. from the Greek.

  810. But if you look at Luke's

  811. parallel account of this chapter,

  812. it calls this an unclean demon

  813. or possessed the man.

  814. And we can say for sure

  815. that it is the work of the devil

  816. and we can identify it as such.

  817. And though this account

  818. may seem so foreign to us today,

  819. it's difficult to understand

  820. what is meant by the unclean spirit

  821. to know exactly

  822. what the demon possession

  823. looked like.

  824. It is true that it is still

  825. a valid characteristic

  826. of the works of the devil today

  827. to use any means he can

  828. to disrupt us

  829. from the awe of Christ,

  830. to disrupt us from that wonder.

  831. When we show an inclination

  832. towards Jesus,

  833. when we show an interest

  834. in this man,

  835. when you find Jesus wonderful,

  836. when you seek him out,

  837. the devil will not be far away.

  838. It's his characteristic

  839. to distract us,

  840. to disrupt us,

  841. to interrupt us

  842. as we join together

  843. to worship God.

  844. You know,

  845. we may come this morning

  846. with great intentions

  847. to listen to what has been said

  848. and we struggle

  849. to keep our focus.

  850. We may leave

  851. with good intentions

  852. to live our lives

  853. devoted to Christ

  854. with greater resolve

  855. and we're so easily

  856. distracted,

  857. disrupted

  858. and we turn away

  859. from the desires

  860. of our hearts.

  861. There is a war

  862. between the Christian

  863. and the evil spirits

  864. at our present.

  865. the evil

  866. in our hearts.

  867. The closer

  868. we draw to Christ,

  869. you can be sure

  870. that the more active

  871. the work

  872. of the devil

  873. will be.

  874. But in this passage here

  875. we have

  876. a vocal

  877. voice

  878. from this spirit.

  879. Verse 24,

  880. it says,

  881. What have you to do

  882. with us,

  883. Jesus of Nazareth?

  884. Have you come

  885. to destroy us?

  886. I know who you are,

  887. the Holy One of God.

  888. And you may look

  889. at this

  890. and think,

  891. why on earth

  892. did this spirit

  893. come in

  894. on the Sabbath day

  895. into the synagogue?

  896. And it sounds like

  897. he's revealing

  898. for the good

  899. of Jesus' cause

  900. and the good

  901. of God,

  902. to reveal

  903. the goodness

  904. of God

  905. by revealing

  906. who Jesus is.

  907. He's revealing

  908. that this is

  909. the Messiah

  910. set before you.

  911. Why on earth

  912. is an evil spirit,

  913. unclean spirit

  914. doing this?

  915. I think there's

  916. more to it

  917. than meets the eye.

  918. I think there's

  919. more to it

  920. than we can

  921. understand.

  922. This entering line

  923. is,

  924. what have you to do

  925. with us,

  926. Jesus of Nazareth?

  927. It's not,

  928. what have you to do

  929. with me?

  930. It's,

  931. what have you to do

  932. with us?

  933. And looking at it,

  934. there's significance

  935. in this plurality

  936. that is emphasized here.

  937. What have you to do

  938. with us?

  939. Is it the us

  940. of the people

  941. gathered there

  942. in the building?

  943. Is the devil

  944. trying to associate

  945. himself with

  946. the people?

  947. Jesus is a visitor

  948. and he's speaking there.

  949. Or is the us

  950. there?

  951. The possession

  952. of the spirits

  953. within him.

  954. Cast your minds

  955. to the passage

  956. again,

  957. or passage of

  958. where Jesus meets

  959. Legion

  960. and he asks

  961. him his name,

  962. my name is Legion

  963. for we have many,

  964. the many possessions

  965. of spirits

  966. within him.

  967. Is the us

  968. there?

  969. Speaking of

  970. the spirits

  971. within him,

  972. this may be true.

  973. Picture the scene

  974. if you will though.

  975. We're in the synagogue.

  976. It would be a very

  977. simple sort of

  978. building like we

  979. have here.

  980. This man walks

  981. in.

  982. Is he trying

  983. to include

  984. the people

  985. as part of the us?

  986. Is the demon

  987. trying to excite

  988. with the many?

  989. Associating himself

  990. with the people

  991. to turn them

  992. against God

  993. and say,

  994. you have nothing

  995. to do with us,

  996. the visitor,

  997. Jesus of Nazareth.

  998. If you look

  999. into that,

  1000. it seems that

  1001. there's nothing

  1002. too good

  1003. to come from Nazareth.

  1004. There was no

  1005. good reputation

  1006. in Nazareth

  1007. at that time.

  1008. Nathaniel questioned

  1009. the disciples.

  1010. Can anything

  1011. good come out

  1012. of Nazareth?

  1013. The devil

  1014. is saying,

  1015. what have you

  1016. to do with us,

  1017. Jesus of Nazareth?

  1018. The people

  1019. are not waiting

  1020. for someone

  1021. from Nazareth,

  1022. the people of God.

  1023. They are waiting

  1024. for someone

  1025. from Bethlehem.

  1026. In the scriptures

  1027. that was revealed.

  1028. He's instantly

  1029. trying to cause

  1030. a divide

  1031. by his words.

  1032. He's trying

  1033. to stir doubt

  1034. amongst the people.

1035. if this is the case.

  1036. People that were

  1037. just in awe

  1038. of him prior

  1039. are now forced

  1040. to question

  1041. his identity

  1042. and question,

  1043. well,

  1044. who is this man?

  1045. This man's

  1046. from Nazareth.

  1047. The devil's,

  1048. is he instigating

  1049. that this man

  1050. is some sort

  1051. of a fraud?

  1052. Is he there

  1053. only to deceive you?

  1054. It says that

  1055. are you there

  1056. to destroy us?

  1057. And a rendering

  1058. of this word

  1059. destroy

  1060. is cause us

  1061. to lose.

  1062. Are you there

  1063. to cause us

  1064. to lose?

  1065. Now,

  1066. if the devil

  1067. was trying

  1068. to influence

  1069. the people

  1070. to turn against God,

  1071. that's an interesting

  1072. phrase

  1073. because it is

  1074. very suitable

  1075. for him to use

  1076. that if they would

  1077. listen to his words,

  1078. they would be

  1079. at a loss.

  1080. Take this phrase

  1081. in its essence.

  1082. What have you

  1083. to do with us,

  1084. Jesus of Nazareth?

  1085. You have come

  1086. to destroy us.

  1087. What it's saying

  1088. is,

  1089. Jesus,

  1090. you have nothing

  1091. to do with us.

  1092. Jesus,

  1093. you have nothing

  1094. to do with me.

  1095. You're

  1096. from somewhere

  1097. that I don't want

  1098. to know anything about.

  1099. I don't regard

  1100. anything

  1101. of your people.

  1102. You're coming here

  1103. to deceive me

  1104. with your words.

  1105. you're coming

  1106. here to deceive

  1107. others with your words.

  1108. And if people

  1109. listen to your words,

  1110. they're going

1111. to be at a loss.

  1112. Have you heard

  1113. that before?

  1114. Something similar

  1115. like that?

  1116. Have you heard

  1117. people say

  1118. they don't want

  1119. Jesus to have

  1120. anything to do

  1121. with them?

  1122. Have you heard

  1123. people say

  1124. if you listen

  1125. to these words,

  1126. you'll be at a loss?

  1127. We don't have

  1128. to look far

  1129. to find that.

  1130. I'm not saying

  1131. that people

  1132. that have these

  1133. views are demon

  1134. possessed,

  1135. but it's the evil

  1136. inclination of our hearts.

  1137. It is the evil

  1138. that is within us.

  1139. But we do not

  1140. desire God.

  1141. We only love

  1142. because he first

  1143. loved us.

  1144. Our heart

  1145. is turned

  1146. against God.

  1147. We don't want

  1148. to have anything

  1149. to do with Jesus.

  1150. Our heart

  1151. desires.

  1152. You take

  1153. that's a possibility.

  1154. I don't know

  1155. if it's right,

  1156. but there's an element

  1157. of truth to it.

  1158. The other

  1159. case is

  1160. that if it were

  1161. the Spirit

  1162. speaking,

  1163. have you come

  1164. to destroy us?

  1165. They knew fine

  1166. that Jesus

  1167. had authority

  1168. to destroy them.

  1169. They wanted

  1170. to be left alone.

  1171. They wanted

  1172. to go about

  1173. causing

  1174. stirring contempt

  1175. against the people

  1176. of God.

  1177. They wanted

  1178. to be left

  1179. alone,

  1180. the spirits

  1181. if it was.

  1182. But why

  1183. did this

  1184. spirit enter

  1185. into

  1186. when the people

  1187. were in awe

  1188. of God

  1189. if it were not

  1190. to distract them,

  1191. to turn them

  1192. away from God?

  1193. The last

  1194. phrase here

  1195. that he speaks

  1196. is,

  1197. I know

  1198. who you are,

  1199. the Holy

  1200. One of God.

  1201. Why did he

  1202. say this?

  1203. But there's a

  1204. change in this

  1205. phrase.

  1206. It's not us

  1207. anymore,

  1208. it's not we,

  1209. it's I.

  1210. I know

  1211. who you are.

  1212. Why change

  1213. that singular

  1214. pronoun now?

  1215. Because if it

  1216. were a spiritual

  1217. sense that

  1218. they had been

  1219. speaking about,

  1220. the devils

  1221. know fine

  1222. who Jesus

  1223. was.

  1224. There are no

  1225. questioning,

  1226. why is it a

  1227. single pronoun

  1228. there?

  1229. Why?

  1230. The we

  1231. of the

  1232. spirits

  1233. evil within

  1234. him would

  1235. have all

  1236. known who

  1237. Jesus was.

  1238. The devils

  1239. know more

  1240. of God

  1241. than we

  1242. do.

  1243. R.C.

  1244. Sproul says

  1245. that the

  1246. devils would

  1247. score 100%

  1248. in their

  1249. theology exams.

  1250. They know

  1251. exactly who

  1252. Jesus is.

  1253. They know

  1254. exactly who

  1255. God is.

  1256. They know

  1257. full well,

  1258. every one of

  1259. them knows

  1260. full well,

  1261. so why has

  1262. it changed

  1263. to an

  1264. I now?

  1265. Why does

  1266. it not

  1267. say we

  1268. know who

  1269. you are,

  1270. the Holy

  1271. One of

  1272. God?

  1273. You wonder

  1274. at these

  1275. things,

  1276. but you've

  1277. seen evil

  1278. in your

  1279. life.

  1280. You know

  1281. what evil

  1282. looks like.

  1283. And if

  1284. someone

  1285. stirred evil,

  1286. they may

  1287. come in

  1288. shouting.

  1289. And if

  1290. they have a

  1291. problem with

  1292. someone,

  1293. they may

  1294. come up and

  1295. speak directly

  1296. to that

  1297. person.

  1298. It is,

  1299. I know

  1300. who you

  1301. are.

  1302. I may

  1303. be wrong,

  1304. but did

  1305. the devil

  1306. spirit then

  1307. come and

  1308. directly

  1309. attend to

  1310. Jesus by

  1311. saying,

  1312. I know

  1313. who you

  1314. are.

  1315. You are

  1316. the Holy

  1317. One of

  1318. God,

  1319. and I

  1320. am against

  1321. you in

  1322. every way.

  1323. I will

  1324. do everything

  1325. in my

  1326. power to

  1327. oppose you

  1328. and frustrate

  1329. your plans.

  1330. you rejected

  1331. me in the

  1332. wilderness.

  1333. I will

  1334. do

  1335. everything

  1336. to speed

  1337. up your

  1338. demise and

  1339. turn the

  1340. people against

  1341. you.

  1342. There's a

  1343. deep-rooted

  1344. hatred in

  1345. this man.

  1346. But when

  1347. we seek,

  1348. when we as

  1349. the people

  1350. of God,

  1351. we seek to

  1352. do good,

  1353. we draw near

  1354. to God,

  1355. we pray,

  1356. we read,

  1357. there's moments

  1358. when we are in

  1359. awe of God,

  1360. as we

  1361. said,

  1362. the devil

  1363. will be

  1364. on your

  1365. heels.

  1366. If we

  1367. succeed in

  1368. something,

  1369. he won't

  1370. be far

  1371. away to

  1372. cause us

  1373. to fall,

  1374. to doubt,

  1375. cause us

  1376. to distraction.

  1377. I don't

  1378. know if

  1379. you're

  1380. considering

  1381. coming to

  1382. sit at

  1383. the Lord's

  1384. table next

  1385. week.

  1386. Maybe you

  1387. have resolved

  1388. in your

  1389. mind that

  1390. you would

  1391. come,

  1392. but the

  1393. devil's at

  1394. you saying,

  1395. no,

  1396. don't go,

  1397. you're not

  1398. good enough.

  1399. He'll be

  1400. on your

  1401. heels when

  1402. you decide

  1403. to turn

  1404. you away.

  1405. He'll do

  1406. everything he

  1407. can to

  1408. make a

  1409. doubt

  1410. salvation

  1411. in Christ.

  1412. But if we

  1413. hold on to

  1414. Christ and

  1415. hold on to

  1416. his words,

  1417. the one who

  1418. spoke,

  1419. be silent,

  1420. depart from

  1421. us,

  1422. come out

  1423. of this,

  1424. be silent,

  1425. come out

  1426. of him.

  1427. Christ has

  1428. the power

  1429. and authority

  1430. to separate

  1431. us from

  1432. that evil,

  1433. power.

  1434. That is

  1435. what he

  1436. is saying,

  1437. the son

  1438. that saves.

  1439. It is

  1440. Jesus Christ

  1441. that saves

  1442. us.

  1443. And the

  1444. doubts of

  1445. our hearts

  1446. as we

  1447. stick faithfully

  1448. to him,

  1449. and it is

  1450. our custom

  1451. to come

  1452. to him,

  1453. he has

  1454. the power

  1455. to cast

  1456. out every

  1457. evil that

  1458. grows within

  1459. our hearts

  1460. and says,

  1461. be silent,

  1462. come out

  1463. of him.

  1464. Jesus is

  1465. the son

  1466. that saves.

  1467. And we

  1468. gauge from

  1469. the reaction

  1470. that Christ

  1471. has here

  1472. in verse

  1473. 25.

  1474. He rebuked

  1475. him saying,

  1476. be silent,

  1477. come out

  1478. of him.

  1479. Be silent,

  1480. it's not

  1481. your place

  1482. to reveal

  1483. who I

  1484. am,

  1485. he's saying

  1486. to the

  1487. spirit.

  1488. You're

  1489. not to

  1490. reveal who

  1491. I am,

  1492. I will

  1493. reveal who

  1494. I am,

  1495. and by

  1496. my own

  1497. means.

  1498. He reveals

  1499. in his

  1500. word and

  1501. in his

  1502. practice.

  1503. You

  1504. remember

  1505. John the

  1506. Baptist

  1507. when he

  1508. questioned,

  1509. he heard

  1510. about all

  1511. the things

  1512. Jesus had

  1513. done,

  1514. and he

  1515. was in

  1516. the prison

  1517. cell there,

  1518. and he

  1519. sent his

  1520. disciples,

  1521. go and

  1522. ask that

  1523. man if

  1524. he is the

  1525. one that

  1526. is to

  1527. come,

  1528. or should

  1529. we wait

  1530. for another?

  1531. Jesus'

  1532. response to

  1533. him was

  1534. not to

  1535. say,

  1536. I am

  1537. the Holy

  1538. One of

  1539. God,

  1540. I am

  1541. the Messiah,

  1542. I am

  1543. the one

  1544. you have

  1545. waited for.

  1546. He said

  1547. to the

  1548. disciples,

  1549. return to

  1550. John and

  1551. tell him

  1552. of all

  1553. the things

  1554. you have

  1555. seen and

  1556. heard.

  1557. That is

  1558. how Jesus

  1559. reveals

  1560. himself,

  1561. that we

  1562. see what

  1563. he has

  1564. done,

  1565. we hear

  1566. his word,

  1567. and it is

  1568. likewise in

  1569. our lives,

  1570. we see

  1571. that word

  1572. taking root

  1573. in someone's

  1574. heart,

  1575. and we

  1576. see that

  1577. power taking

  1578. hold of

  1579. their hearts

  1580. and lives,

  1581. someone that

  1582. we didn't

  1583. expect maybe

  1584. to come

  1585. to God.

  1586. And we

  1587. say,

  1588. well,

  1589. what is

  1590. this?

  1591. What power

  1592. is in

  1593. this word

  1594. that it

  1595. would turn

  1596. such a

  1597. man to

  1598. God,

  1599. that it

  1600. would turn

  1601. me to

  1602. God?

  1603. It is

  1604. by the

  1605. word and

  1606. power and

  1607. authority of

  1608. Jesus Christ.

  1609. Jesus reveals

  1610. his authority

  1611. through his

  1612. word and

  1613. through the

  1614. practice,

  1615. of his

  1616. actions.

  1617. You know,

  1618. this account,

  1619. it's strange

  1620. to us,

  1621. as we

  1622. said,

  1623. to consider

  1624. what is

  1625. evil and

  1626. what is

  1627. spiritual.

  1628. There's

  1629. things in it

  1630. we cannot

  1631. grasp,

  1632. there's

  1633. things that

  1634. we don't

  1635. have answers

  1636. for.

  1637. There's a

  1638. battle between

  1639. two great

  1640. authorities

  1641. here,

  1642. but which

  1643. one comes

  1644. out the

  1645. greater?

  1646. which one

  1647. succeeds.

  1648. When Christ

  1649. comes and

  1650. we meet

  1651. with him,

  1652. only one

  1653. can succeed

  1654. in our

  1655. heart.

  1656. It is a

  1657. great

  1658. conversion

  1659. within us

  1660. that when

  1661. Jesus draws

  1662. near to

  1663. us and

  1664. he speaks

  1665. a word

  1666. to us,

  1667. the

  1668. authority of

  1669. good

  1670. conquers,

  1671. the

  1672. authority

  1673. of evil.

  1674. It's the

  1675. same in

  1676. our

  1677. hearts.

  1678. Spiritual

  1679. warfare may

  1680. enter into

  1681. us for a

  1682. time and

  1683. we may

  1684. battle with

  1685. these things.

  1686. The spirit

  1687. did not just

  1688. come out of

  1689. the man,

  1690. it convulsed

  1691. him and

  1692. cast him to

  1693. the ground.

  1694. God and

  1695. the word

  1696. of his

  1697. power and

  1698. authority

  1699. comes to

  1700. us.

  1701. We don't

  1702. like to

  1703. separate

  1704. ourselves

  1705. from the

  1706. world.

  1707. It takes

  1708. difficulty.

  1709. It's a

  1710. war that

  1711. goes on

  1712. within us

  1713. because we

  1714. love the

  1715. things of

  1716. this world

  1717. and we

  1718. want to

  1719. hold on

  1720. to them.

  1721. But the

  1722. only one

  1723. that can

  1724. succeed

  1725. is the

  1726. power and

  1727. authority

  1728. of God.

  1729. Even what

  1730. we have in

  1731. this passage

  1732. here, the

  1733. power of

  1734. Christ and

  1735. his authority

  1736. overrules the

  1737. whole situation.

  1738. And that is

  1739. a power that

  1740. overrules your

  1741. situation today.

  1742. The whole

  1743. world is

  1744. under the

  1745. authority of

  1746. God ultimately.

  1747. But what the

  1748. devil does is

  1749. he comes in.

  1750. He knows

  1751. he's a

  1752. defeated

  1753. foe.

  1754. But he

  1755. stirs us

  1756. against God.

  1757. He stirs the

  1758. people against

  1759. God.

  1760. He does

  1761. what he

  1762. can by

  1763. his power

  1764. to distract

  1765. us from

  1766. God, to

  1767. turn us

  1768. from God.

  1769. But you

  1770. know what?

  1771. He's

  1772. defeated.

  1773. The power

  1774. of God

  1775. through Jesus

  1776. Christ

  1777. is a great

  1778. reassurance

  1779. to us.

  1780. God

  1781. will be

  1782. to

  1783. God.

  1784. When we

  1785. have our

  1786. doubts,

  1787. when we

  1788. know that

  1789. we have

  1790. failed,

  1791. ultimately,

  1792. if we

  1793. trust in

  1794. him,

  1795. trust in

  1796. his word,

  1797. trust what

  1798. he can do

  1799. for us,

  1800. that greater

  1801. power will

  1802. reveal to

  1803. us greater

  1804. things.

  1805. We will be

  1806. welcomed into

  1807. his glory.

  1808. God's

  1809. glory will

  1810. be revealed

  1811. to us.

  1812. It will be a

  1813. wonder like

  1814. no other.

  1815. We'll say,

  1816. what is

  1817. this beauty?

  1818. What are

  1819. these things

  1820. that words

  1821. cannot

  1822. express?

  1823. We come

  1824. next week

  1825. hopefully

  1826. to remember

  1827. what Christ

  1828. has done

  1829. for us.

  1830. And there

  1831. is no

  1832. greater

  1833. place

  1834. where we

  1835. can come

  1836. that we

  1837. sit at

  1838. the feet

  1839. of Jesus

  1840. so you

  1841. can expect

  1842. that there

  1843. will be no

  1844. greater

  1845. disruption

  1846. in your

  1847. lives and

  1848. distraction

  1849. from it.

  1850. But

  1851. ultimately,

  1852. Jesus

  1853. is in

  1854. control of

  1855. everything.

  1856. And you

  1857. ask him

  1858. to silence

  1859. these voices

  1860. that come

  1861. to us

  1862. and the

  1863. worrying

  1864. that happens

  1865. within our

  1866. hearts.

  1867. And we

  1868. focus our

  1869. minds and

  1870. our sight on

  1871. Jesus and

  1872. his words.

  1873. It opens

  1874. our perspective

  1875. to things

  1876. eternal

  1877. and what is

  1878. set before

  1879. us.

  1880. the people

  1881. gathered in

  1882. the passage

  1883. here.

  1884. After the

  1885. Sabbath day,

  1886. the Sabbath

  1887. ended in

  1888. the evening

  1889. and all

  1890. the people

  1891. gathered

  1892. because they

  1893. heard about

  1894. what Christ

  1895. had done.

  1896. And wouldn't

  1897. it be

  1898. wonderful

  1899. if we

  1900. saw the

  1901. people of

  1902. Stornoway

  1903. gathered

  1904. because

  1905. we saw

  1906. the wonderful
