  1. Thank you very much, and thank you for the warm welcome we've received on the island.

  2. We look forward to getting to know you a little bit, and we ask that the Lord will bless the

  3. time together.

  4. I bring greetings from our own fellowship, Kilmally and Arden American Free Church, and

  5. ahead of the visit, we've very much been praying for you, and we trust God to be gracious to

  6. us this weekend.

  7. And we're going to look later on in Nehemiah chapter 9, but I want to begin our time just

    Nehemiah 9 chapter mention

  8. with one verse where the people are told,

  9. Bless the Lord your God from everlasting to everlasting.

  10. Blessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.

  11. Well, we want to bless and praise the Lord together this evening, and we'll do that with

  12. our first item of praise as we sing together the metrical version of Psalm 111, and we shall

  13. sing the first six verses of Psalm 111.

  14. Praise to the Lord, I will extol Him.

  15. Praise to the Lord.

  16. I will extol Him.

  17. Praise to the Lord.

  18. Praise to the Lord.

  19. and on the ancient times.

  20. The whole works of the Lord our God

  21. are great above all measure.

  22. Slaughter they are of every one

  23. at a festive pleasure.

  24. His words most honor our God

  25. is most glorious and pure,

  26. and is undainted by justness

  27. forever doth endure.

  28. His works most wonderful he hath

  29. made to be not upon.

  30. The Lord is gracious,

  31. and he is full of compassion.

  32. He giveth me done to all those

  33. that truly do him dear,

  34. and evermore his covenant

  35. he in his mind will bear.

  36. He did the power of his words

  37. unto his people show.

  38. When he the raven's heritage

  39. upon them death he's true.

  40. Amen.

  41. Amen.

  42. Amen.

  43. Amen.

  44. Amen.

  45. Amen.

  46. Amen.

  47. Amen.

  48. Amen.

  49. Amen.

  50. Well, let's continue now

  51. in praying together

  52. to the Lord our God.

  53. Let us pray.

  54. Our gracious God

  55. and our loving Heavenly Father,

  56. we do gather this evening

  57. as a congregation,

  58. as a company of your people

  59. saved by grace.

  60. Lord, we gather to bless,

  61. to praise,

  62. to extol your name.

  63. Father, we praise you for your works

  64. in creation,

  65. that you have set in their place

  66. the sun and the moon and the stars.

  67. we thank you that it was you

  68. that formed the heights

  69. of the mountains

  70. and who founded the depths

  71. of the sea,

  72. that it was you that breathed life

  73. into all living creatures,

  74. and it is you who sustains

  75. our lives.

  76. And so we praise you

  77. and we worship you

  78. for the works about which

  79. we have sung,

  80. works which are right

  81. and true.

  82. we thank you, Lord,

  83. that you are kind,

  84. that you are great,

  85. and that you are full of grace.

  86. We thank you for the work of grace,

  87. for the work of redemption

  88. in our world,

  89. in our lives.

  90. That time and again

  91. you have saved your people

  92. from all their distress.

  93. When they cried,

  94. you have heard from heaven

  95. and you have answered

  96. answered to deliver.

  97. Lord, how true that is

  98. also of our own lives.

  99. How much we want to thank you

  100. for the times you have taken us

  101. from the mud and mire

  102. and set our feet upon the rock.

  103. Time and again, Lord,

  104. you forgave your people

  105. all of their sins.

  106. For you are a gracious

  107. and merciful God,

  108. slow to anger

  109. and abounding

  110. and steadfast love.

  111. You are the one

  112. who never forgets

  113. and who never forsakes

  114. your own people.

  115. And how we thank you, Lord,

  116. for our redemption in Christ.

  117. That the one through whom

  118. and for whom

  119. all things were made

  120. should step into this broken world.

  121. That he might make one day

  122. all things new.

  123. Thank you that the Prince of Glory

  124. was willing to bear our shame.

  125. That the one in whom

  126. there was life

  127. was willing to die our death.

  128. And that your only begotten Son

  129. should be cut off

  130. from his heavenly Father

  131. in order that we might be welcomed home

  132. and become children of the living God.

  133. So this evening, this weekend,

  134. Father, would you fix our eyes upon Jesus?

  135. Would you turn our eyes upon Jesus

  136. to look full in his glorious face

  137. that the things on earth might seem strangely dim

  138. in the light of his glory

  139. and his grace?

  140. Help us to set our hearts

  141. on things that are above

  142. to remember that our lives are hidden with Christ

  143. who is the hope of glory.

  144. So this evening we pray

  145. as we turn to your word

  146. as we lift up our voices in praise

  147. would you refresh our hearts

  148. and would you remind us once more

  149. of your very great promises

  150. and of the plans and the purposes

  151. you have for our lives

  152. that we might walk in wisdom

  153. that we might walk in uprightness

  154. for your pleasure

  155. and for your praise.

  156. And this we pray in Jesus' name.

  157. Amen.

  158. Well, we're going to sing once more

  159. before we read

  160. and our second item of praise

  161. is Psalm 85

  162. from Sing Psalms

  163. Psalm 85

  164. and we'll sing together verses 1 to 9

  165. In times past, Lord, you showed favour

  166. to your own beloved land

  167. the prosperity of Jacob you restored

  168. by your strong hand.

  169. That's Psalm 85

    Psalms 85:1–9

  170. verses 1 to 9

  171. in time

  172. in time

  173. in time

  174. in time

  175. past, Lord, you showed

  176. favour

  177. to your own beloved land

  178. the prosperity of Jacob

  179. you restored by your strong hand

  180. you restored by your strong hand

  181. you forgive your people's trespass

  182. you were pleased their sins to hide

  183. you withdrew all your disfledger

  184. from your wrath you turned us high

  185. God our Saviour

  186. now restore us

  187. from us turn away your rage

  188. will your anger burn against us

  189. will it last from age to age

  190. will you not again be

  191. will you not again revive us

  192. that we may rejoice in you

  193. show us, Lord, your covenant verse

  194. show us, Lord, your covenant mercy

  195. your salvation grant and you

  196. I will hear what God the Lord says

  197. to his saints he offers peace

  198. but his people must not wander

  199. and return to foolishness

  200. surely for all those who fear him

  201. his salvation is at hand

  202. so that once again his glory

  203. may be seen within our land

  204. well I

  205. I wanted to look together with you tonight

  206. at the ninth chapter of Nehemiah

  207. which if you have the same church bible

  208. I have before me

  209. it should be found on page 483

  210. that's Nehemiah chapter 9

    Nehemiah 9 chapter mention

  211. page 482 and 83

  212. it's a lengthy chapter

  213. we're not going to read the whole chapter

  214. but I hope to reference it in the course

  215. of our study together

  216. but tonight we're just going to read

  217. a few verses from the close of the chapter

  218. that's 32 down to the end

  219. verse 38

  220. this great prayer of confession

  221. before God

  222. and Nehemiah chapter 9

    Nehemiah 9:32

  223. verse 32

  224. we come to the conclusion of that prayer

  225. let us hear together the word of God

  226. now therefore our God the great

  227. the mighty and the awesome God

  228. who keeps covenant and steadfast love

  229. let not all the hardship seem little to you

  230. that has come upon us

  231. upon our kings

  232. our princes our priests our prophets our fathers

  233. and all your people

  234. since the time of the kings of Assyria until this day

  235. yet you have been righteous in all that has come upon us

  236. for you have dealt faithfully

  237. and we have acted wickedly

  238. our kings our princes our priests and our fathers

  239. have not kept your law

  240. or paid attention to your commandments

  241. and your warnings that you gave them

  242. even in their own kingdom

  243. enjoying your great goodness that you gave them

  244. and in the large and rich land that you set before them

  245. they did not serve you

  246. or turn from their wicked works

  247. behold we are slaves this day

  248. in the land that you gave to our fathers

  249. to enjoy its fruit and its good gifts

  250. behold we are slaves

  251. and its rich yield goes to the kings

  252. whom you have set over us because of our sins

  253. they rule over our bodies and over our livestock as they please

  254. and we are in great distress

  255. because of all this we make a firm covenant in writing

  256. on the sealed documents of the names of our princes

  257. our Levites and our priests

  258. and we thank God for his word

  259. in this book of Nehemiah

  260. before we turn to the word together

  261. for a time of study

  262. we will sing once more

  263. this time from Psalm 36

  264. the metrical version of Psalm 36

  265. singing together verses 5 to 10

  266. a psalm about the mercy and loving kindness of God towards his people

  267. thy mercy Lord is in the heavens

  268. thy truth doth reach the clouds

  269. Psalm 36 5 to 10

  270. thy mercy Lord is in the heavens

  271. thy truth doth reach the clouds

  272. thy mercy Lord is in the heavens

  273. thy truth doth reach the clouds

  274. thy truth doth reach the clouds

  275. thy truth doth reach the clouds

  276. thy对

  277. thy thy justice di That's what

  278. thy justice di E Ais-Blued

  279. Lord, thy preserves man and peace, how precious is thy grace.

  280. Therefore in shadow of thy wings, men's sunset shall quay.

  281. They with the badness of thy heart shall be well satisfied.

  282. O rivers of thy pleasures, I will think to them provide.

  283. Because of life the fountain pure remains alone with thee.

  284. And in the purest light of mine, we clearly light shall see.

  285. Thy lovingkindness unto them continue that be known.

  286. And still on men, how bright in heart thy righteousness be so.

  287. Well, I invite you to keep your Bible open to Nehemiah chapter 9.

    Nehemiah 9 chapter mention

  288. And although we read from verse 32, I want to survey the whole chapter with you as we think together.

  289. And it's a wonderful prayer.

  290. It's a prayer of confession.

  291. And it's good as we approach this weekend that we come before God and acknowledge and confess our sins to Him,

  292. trusting in His great mercies, trusting in His steadfast love and faithfulness.

  293. I wonder if you've heard of any occasions in which the leaders of the nation sought to turn a people back to God.

  294. It was a little bit before God.

  295. It was a little bit before my time, but I believe that during the days of World War II,

  296. there was a national day of prayer in advance of the great rescue at Dunkirk.

  297. The king himself called the nation to pray.

  298. And all over the land, church bells rang out, queues formed as people were eager to pray for the safe deliverance of the British Army.

  299. When the time came, the seas were calm, the skies were cloudy, and a great many were delivered.

  300. The leaders of a nation leading their people to God.

  301. And that's something like the scene in Nehemiah chapter 9.

    Nehemiah 9 chapter mention

  302. Nehemiah was a leader.

  303. We often think of him as something like a civil engineer, rebuilding gates and walls.

  304. But he sought also to rebuild the community, the people of the tribes who had returned.

  305. He sought to bring the people back to God.

  306. And so in Nehemiah chapter 9, he, Nehemiah the governor, turns his people's attention to the living God,

    Nehemiah 9 chapter mention

  307. rebuilding not only the city, but rebuilding the community.

  308. We have in Kilmali and Ardnamurk been studying together the book of Nehemiah over these past months.

  309. And it's the kind of book that's often preached if, for example, you're attending a leadership seminar.

  310. You know, the sort of thing, you know, leadership lessons from Nehemiah.

  311. And somebody rightly commented, it is perhaps the oldest book, the oldest manual on leadership in the whole of human history.

  312. Much to teach us about spiritual leadership, much to teach us about servant leadership, particularly the fifth chapter.

  313. But it's not just a book about leadership.

  314. And it's a book that's often preached on, isn't it, just before a building project.

  315. We are ourselves about to renovate our small church building on the Ardnamurk Peninsula,

  316. but that wasn't why we wanted to preach it.

  317. It's not just a book about building projects.

  318. In fact, building is really only half the story.

  319. The books of Ezra and Nehemiah originally circulated as one book, Ezra-Nehemiah.

  320. And we often concentrate on the physical rebuilding.

  321. In Ezra, that is the temple.

  322. In Nehemiah, the gates and the walls of Jerusalem.

  323. But each book is itself in two halves.

  324. The first half, there is a building project.

  325. The second half, a rebuilding of the people's lives and their faith and their community around the Word of God.

  326. And so Nehemiah seeks not only to rebuild the city, which he does under God, but to rebuild the people.

  327. To restore not only the gates and the walls of Jerusalem, but to restore their relationship with the living God,

  328. built on the foundation of the Word of God.

  329. And in chapter 8, that Word is opened for the first time in a long time.

  330. And as the people hear the Word, they weep,

  331. because they realize what they'd lost, how their forefathers had behaved.

  332. But they're told in that chapter not to weep,

  333. because it was a time to celebrate, and a time to celebrate the Feast of Booths.

  334. And so in chapter 8, there is feasting, there is a festival.

  335. But then in chapter 9, the time comes to weep,

  336. to confess their sins before God, to repent of their sins,

  337. to turn back in faith to the living God.

  338. And so in chapter 9, that's what we find happening.

  339. On the 24th day, the people assemble with fasting, sackcloth, and with earth on their heads.

  340. They separate themselves from the people of the land,

  341. and they hear the Word of God for a quarter of a day.

  342. Verse 3,

  343. And then for another quarter, they make confession and worship the Lord their God.

  344. It's a remarkable passage.

  345. Where we live, we have a nice view of Ben Nevis,

  346. from some of the windows of the house.

  347. And if you're familiar with the Nevis Range, you'll know there's a gondola,

  348. which is the easiest and the quickest way to get up to enjoy the view.

  349. And if you take the gondola in Anakmur, you get a tremendous view of the surrounding mountains.

  350. Nevis Range, the Memors, all the way across to the west.

  351. And in Nehemiah chapter 9, we get a tremendous view of the Old Testament.

    Nehemiah 9 chapter mention

  352. We're given a summary of Old Testament history.

  353. We're given a survey of Old Testament events from the creation of the universe in Genesis

  354. to the return from exile at the time of Nehemiah.

  355. And it's not just a register of names and important dates and significant places.

  356. It is a record of God's faithful dealings with His unfaithful people.

  357. It's a long passage.

  358. But there is a repeated pattern that helps us understand what's at work.

  359. Repeatedly, we are told of God's initiative in calling people to Himself, in making a covenant with them.

  360. You did this, the gracious initiative of God.

  361. And then there is then described how the people turned away,

  362. how they were ungrateful, how they were disobedient.

  363. But we did this.

  364. And then they are taught how the Lord showed His mercy and grace,

  365. how He persevered with them,

  366. and how He pardoned their sins times without number.

  367. And so I want to briefly survey this passage,

  368. observing three things in the first eight verses.

  369. God makes a covenant.

  370. In the verses 9 to 31,

  371. the people break the covenant and break His commandments.

  372. And then in the verses we read, 32 to 38,

  373. they seek to remake the covenant.

  374. And the opening verses take us right back to the beginning,

  375. right back to the beginning of all things,

  376. the creation of heaven and earth.

  377. Verse 6,

  378. You made heaven, the heaven of heavens,

  379. the earth and all that is in it.

  380. We live in a beautiful and a wonderful world.

  381. You live on Lewis.

  382. I don't need to tell you that.

  383. The more we learn about the world,

  384. the more we marvel at the wisdom and the power

  385. of the God who made it.

  386. The Lord, we're told, made all men and women.

  387. And He chose one man, this man, Abram.

  388. And He made a covenant with Him.

  389. He who made all things made a covenant with this young man,

  390. this old man, I should say.

  391. And He promised Abram

  392. that He would be the father of many peoples.

  393. He promised to many descendants,

  394. though He was at the time childless.

  395. He promised His own land,

  396. the land of the Canaanites.

  397. He promised that He would bless him

  398. and that through His seed,

  399. through His offspring,

  400. all the world would be blessed.

  401. And immediately, we're told,

  402. in these chapters,

  403. verse 8,

  404. You have kept your promise,

  405. for you are righteous.

  406. The one who made all things made a promise.

  407. And undergirding this whole chapter

  408. is that the Lord kept His promise,

  409. for He is righteous.

  410. Abram, his heart was found faithful to God,

  411. but God proved Himself faithful to His people

  412. and to His ancestors

  413. throughout their long and their troubled history.

  414. God is faithful.

  415. God keeps promises

  416. at the very start of this confession.

  417. Have we ever failed to keep our word?

  418. Have we ever broken a promise?

  419. Not kept an appointment,

  420. an arrangement without telling anyone?

  421. Not fulfilled a contractual obligation?

  422. Not kept a vow,

  423. maybe a baptismal vow,

  424. but bringing up the children in the faith?

  425. Are we unwilling,

  426. or more likely unable,

  427. to keep the promises we make?

  428. It's part of life in the sinful

  429. and this fallen world

  430. that people say things

  431. and make promises,

  432. but they cannot fulfill them.

  433. And yet there is one

  434. who kept His promise,

  435. who keeps His promise,

  436. for He is righteous.

  437. In the great hymn Amazing Grace,

  438. John Newton has these words,

  439. The Lord has promised good to me.

  440. His word my hope secures.

  441. He will my shield and portion be

  442. as long as life endures.

  443. He has promised,

  444. and He will keep His promise,

  445. because He is righteous.

  446. So, the confession begins

  447. with a reminder

  448. of the faithfulness of God,

  449. the favor He showed to Abraham

  450. in making this covenant.

  451. And in the chapter,

  452. the verses that follow,

  453. we move from Genesis

  454. into Exodus,

  455. the next book of the Pentateuch.

  456. And we learn once more

  457. of the Lord's deliverance

  458. of His people

  459. from Egypt.

  460. He fulfilled His promise

  461. in multiplying them greatly.

  462. And though He had yet

  463. to give them the land

  464. of their inheritance,

  465. they multiplied

  466. and they lived in Egypt.

  467. And the Egyptians

  468. became afraid

  469. of the immigrants.

  470. They began to oppress them.

  471. They were terrified

  472. that they'd take over.

  473. And then we have Pharaoh,

  474. who does not let

  475. his people go.

  476. And we're told

  477. in Nehemiah

  478. from verse 9

  479. that God saw

  480. their affliction

  481. as they worked

  482. as slaves.

  483. He heard their cry

  484. at the Red Sea

  485. and He performed

  486. these signs

  487. and wonders

  488. against Pharaoh,

  489. for they acted

  490. arrogantly

  491. against

  492. our fathers.

  493. But Moses

  494. went to Pharaoh

  495. and he explained

  496. that the God

  497. of heaven

  498. had commanded him

  499. to let His people go.

  500. Pharaoh said,

  501. Exodus 5 verse 2,

    Exodus 5:2

  502. Who is the Lord?

  503. I do not know the Lord.

  504. He failed to rightly

  505. honor the God

  506. of heaven.

  507. And so the Lord

  508. showed His signs

  509. and wonders

  510. and He brought

  511. His people

  512. safely out,

  513. made a name

  514. for Himself,

  515. divided the sea

  516. before them.

  517. And there in the wilderness

  518. He fed them

  519. daily with manna

  520. from heaven.

  521. He led them

  522. day and night

  523. with a cloud

  524. of fire.

  525. And He led them

  526. supremely,

  527. verse 13,

  528. by speaking to them

  529. from heaven

  530. and giving them

  531. right rules

  532. and true laws,

  533. making known to them

  534. the Holy Sabbath,

  535. giving them

  536. the law

  537. of Moses.

  538. The Lord

  539. liberated them.

  540. The Lord

  541. fed them.

  542. He led them.

  543. He gave to them

  544. His law.

  545. He did them

  546. so much good.

  547. And then in verse 16

  548. we read that word,

  549. but they and our forefathers

  550. acted presumptuously

  551. and stiffened their neck

  552. and did not obey

  553. your command.

  554. How did they respond

  555. to the saving initiative?

  556. How did they respond

  557. to God hearing their cries

  558. and helping?

  559. How did they respond

  560. to His care

  561. and His daily guidance?

  562. They stiffened their neck.

  563. They refused to obey

  564. His commandments.

  565. They forgot

  566. the miracles,

  567. not mindful of the wonders

  568. you'd performed

  569. among them.

  570. They sought to return

  571. to their slavery

  572. in Egypt.

  573. They committed

  574. great blasphemy

  575. and they worshipped

  576. an idol,

  577. verse 18.

  578. They were not mindful

  579. of all that the Lord

  580. had done for them.

  581. Ingratitude,

  582. insolent.

  583. They could not have been

  584. more ungrateful

  585. to the Lord.

  586. Instead of worshipping Him,

  587. they cast for themselves

  588. this golden calf

  589. and they said,

  590. this is your God

  591. who brought you up

  592. out of Egypt

  593. and they committed

  594. great blasphemies.

  595. I wonder how you

  596. or I would respond

  597. in the face

  598. of such ingratitude.

  599. Would we say,

  600. after all I've done

  601. for you

  602. and this is how

  603. you thank me,

  604. how does the Lord

  605. respond

  606. to their

  607. ingratitude?

  608. You

  609. are a gracious,

  610. a God ready to forgive,

  611. gracious and merciful,

  612. slow to anger

  613. and abounding

  614. in steadfast love.

  615. You did not forsake them,

  616. verse 17.

  617. In your great mercies,

  618. you continued

  619. to give them

  620. the pillar of cloud,

  621. the pillar of fire.

  622. Verse 20,

  623. you gave your good spirit,

  624. you gave the manna.

  625. For 40 years,

  626. you sustained them

  627. in the wilderness.

  628. They lacked

  629. nothing.

  630. The people

  631. rejected

  632. the Lord.

  633. The people

  634. sought to

  635. go back

  636. to slavery

  637. in Egypt,

  638. yet the Lord

  639. persevered with them.

  640. He didn't give up

  641. on them.

  642. He didn't give them

  643. over.

  644. He persevered

  645. with them.

  646. Disciplined,

  647. yes,

  648. but not abandoned.

  649. Still

  650. fed with the manna,

  651. still led

  652. with the

  653. pillar of cloud

  654. and fire,

  655. still sustained

  656. by his spirit

  657. for 40 years

  658. in the wilderness.

  659. And the answer

  660. and the reason

  661. why,

  662. verse 19,

  663. is that word

  664. will meet again,

  665. these words,

  666. your great mercies.

  667. He made a promise

  668. to Abraham

  669. that he would

  670. bless his descendants

  671. and he kept

  672. his promise

  673. because he

  674. is righteous,

  675. he is faithful

  676. even when

  677. his people

  678. are unfaithful.

  679. The opening

  680. psalm,

  681. reading a little

  682. further down

  683. to verse 9,

  684. Psalm 111,

  685. this time in the

  686. Sing's Praise

  687. version,

  688. has this

  689. stanza.

  690. He sent

  691. redemption

  692. for his people.

  693. His covenant

  694. remains the same,

  695. ordained by him

  696. throughout all ages,

  697. holy

  698. and awesome,

  699. is his name.

  700. He is faithful

  701. even when they

  702. are unfaithful.

  703. And we see that

  704. same pattern

  705. play out

  706. in the next

  707. verses,

  708. moving this time

  709. from Exodus

  710. into the historical

  711. books,

  712. the conquest,

  713. Joshua,

  714. all the way

  715. through to the end

  716. of 2 Kings.

  717. Verse 22,

  718. he gives them

  719. kingdoms.

  720. Verse 22,

  721. they possess the land

  722. he had pledged

  723. to give to them.

  724. And it's a lovely land,

  725. rich,

  726. fertile land,

  727. houses and cities

  728. they didn't build,

  729. flowing with milk

  730. and honey.

  731. The people

  732. delight themselves

  733. in God's

  734. great goodness.

  735. And how do they

  736. respond?

  737. Well, it's

  738. depressingly

  739. predictable,

  740. isn't it?

  741. Verse 26,

  742. nevertheless,

  743. they were

  744. disobedient

  745. and rebelled

  746. against you

  747. and cast your law

  748. behind their back.

  749. Not with

  750. gratitude

  751. and rejoicing

  752. at the Lord's

  753. great goodness,

  754. not with worship

  755. and obedience

  756. to his word.

  757. On the contrary,

  758. they cast

  759. his law

  760. behind their

  761. back,

  762. going so far

  763. as to kill

  764. the prophets

  765. that came

  766. and spoke

  767. to them

  768. and warned

  769. them.

  770. The Lord

  771. doesn't give up

  772. on them.

  773. Verse 23,

  774. he'd multiplied

  775. them as the

  776. stars of heaven,

  777. as he'd promised

  778. to do.

  779. And though they

  780. give themselves

  781. over once more

  782. to idolatry

  783. and blasphemy,

  784. he doesn't

  785. give them up.

  786. He does

  787. give them over

  788. to the hands

  789. of their enemies,

  790. but he doesn't

  791. give them up

  792. fully and

  793. finally.

  794. And verse 27,

  795. when they cry

  796. out to him

  797. in their distress,

  798. once more he

  799. hears their

  800. affliction

  801. and he responds.

  802. And there's

  803. that little

  804. phrase

  805. again

  806. in verse 27,

  807. according to

  808. your great

  809. mercies.

  810. He made a

  811. promise

  812. to their

  813. forefather.

  814. He kept

  815. that promise

  816. because he

  817. is faithful.

  818. And the people

  819. just go downhill.

  820. Things get worse

  821. and worse.

  822. We're told

  823. that they

  824. acted

  825. presumptuously.

  826. It's the same

  827. language,

  828. verse 29,

  829. that was used

  830. of Pharaoh.

  831. So this

  832. unbelieving

  833. Pharaoh,

  834. who didn't

  835. know the

  836. Lord,

  837. acted

  838. arrogantly

  839. towards him.

  840. And sometime

  841. later,

  842. the Lord's

  843. own people

  844. act

  845. presumptuously,

  846. as if they

  847. didn't know

  848. the Lord.

  849. They keep

  850. on sinning.

  851. They turned

  852. a stubborn

  853. shoulder.

  854. They stiffened

  855. again their

  856. neck.

  857. They closed

  858. their ears

  859. to the pleas

  860. of the prophets.

  861. And this

  862. wasn't an

  863. occasional wobble.

  864. This wasn't

  865. a one-off.

  866. We're told

  867. it was a

  868. pattern of

  869. behavior that

  870. continued for

  871. many years,

  872. decades,

  873. centuries.

  874. They tried

  875. his patience

  876. time and

  877. again.

  878. And yet he

  879. never made

  880. an end of

  881. them,

  882. verse 31.

  883. And he

  884. never forsook

  885. them,

  886. for he is a

  887. gracious and

  888. merciful God.

  889. He kept

  890. his promise,

  891. because he

  892. is righteous.

  893. He is the

  894. God of

  895. great mercy,

  896. slow to

  897. anger and

  898. abounding in

  899. steadfast love.

  900. Perhaps

  901. you've known

  902. the experience

  903. in your life

  904. where you've

  905. sought to

  906. support a

  907. wayward child

  908. or a

  909. testing spouse

  910. or in the

  911. workplace,

  912. a difficult

  913. employee,

  914. a manager,

  915. member of

  916. the department.

  917. Perhaps in

  918. your family,

  919. there's a

  920. member of the

  921. family who

  922. year after

  923. year causes

  924. nothing but

  925. heartache.

  926. They don't

  927. listen to

  928. advice.

  929. They go

  930. their own

  931. way.

  932. They make

  933. mistakes,

  934. foolish decisions,

  935. bringing nothing

  936. but shame and

  937. dishonor upon

  938. the family.

  939. And yet you

  940. bear with

  941. them.

  942. You persevere

  943. with them

  944. because you

  945. love them

  946. and they're

  947. part of your

  948. family.

  949. Or maybe a

  950. spouse,

  951. maybe

  952. neglecting you

  953. emotionally,

  954. maybe never

  955. having anything

  956. positive to

  957. say,

  958. never anything

  959. encouragement,

  960. and yet you

  961. bear with

  962. them because

  963. you love

  964. them.

  965. And you

  966. made a

  967. promise,

  968. you made a

  969. vow to

  970. them to

  971. love them

  972. till death

  973. do you

  974. part.

  975. Sometimes

  976. in life,

  977. we're called

  978. to be

  979. long-suffering

  980. with those

  981. we love,

  982. to bear

  983. with them.

  984. And the

  985. Lord here

  986. is depicted

  987. as long-suffering

  988. with His

  989. people.

  990. We marvel

  991. at His

  992. patience

  993. century after

  994. century as

  995. He comes

  996. after them

  997. and they

  998. turn away

  999. from Him

  1000. for many

  1001. years.

  1002. And yet He

  1003. doesn't make

  1004. an end to

  1005. them.

  1006. He doesn't

  1007. forsake

  1008. them.

  1009. He doesn't

  1010. forget the

  1011. promise that

  1012. He made

  1013. to their

  1014. ancestor

  1015. Abraham,

  1016. the covenants

  1017. that He

  1018. made with

  1019. their forefathers.

  1020. You or I

  1021. might be

  1022. tempted,

  1023. if treated

  1024. that way,

  1025. to say,

  1026. fine,

  1027. that's it.

  1028. Have it

  1029. your way.

  1030. Washing

  1031. my hands

  1032. of you,

  1033. that's

  1034. enough.

  1035. I quit.

  1036. We'll go

  1037. our separate

  1038. ways.

  1039. Not the

  1040. Lord.

  1041. He made

  1042. a promise.

  1043. He made

  1044. a covenant.

  1045. He is the

  1046. God of

  1047. great mercies.

  1048. He is

  1049. righteous,

  1050. and He

  1051. will keep

  1052. that promise.

  1053. And so

  1054. it's against

  1055. that background

  1056. that we come

  1057. to the verse.

  1058. We looked

  1059. at verse

  1060. 32,

  1061. and in

  1062. these verses

  1063. the leaders

  1064. of the people

  1065. seek to

  1066. renew the

  1067. covenant

  1068. with God.

  1069. They've

  1070. rehearsed

  1071. the whole

  1072. story

  1073. from creation

  1074. to exile,

  1075. and they

  1076. now confess

  1077. their sins,

  1078. the sins

  1079. of the

  1080. people,

  1081. the sins

  1082. of their

  1083. forefathers,

  1084. sins,

  1085. and they

  1086. remind one

  1087. another of

  1088. God's

  1089. covenant,

  1090. but also of

  1091. His steadfast

  1092. love and

  1093. of His mercy

  1094. and grace.

  1095. they cast

  1096. their minds

  1097. back to the

  1098. time of

  1099. the exile,

  1100. verse 32,

  1101. when the

  1102. northern kingdom

  1103. was taken

  1104. to Syria

  1105. and then the

  1106. southern kingdom

  1107. off into the

  1108. Babylonian

  1109. captivity,

  1110. the result

  1111. of the Lord

  1112. disciplining

  1113. His wayward

  1114. people for

  1115. their breaking

  1116. of the

  1117. covenant.

  1118. And they

  1119. acknowledge

  1120. that in all

  1121. of this,

  1122. verse 33,

  1123. He has

  1124. been

  1125. righteous,

  1126. He has

  1127. been

  1128. faithful,

  1129. and they

  1130. have acted

  1131. wickedly.

  1132. And it's

  1133. not a few

  1134. rotten eggs,

  1135. it's not a few

  1136. bad apples

  1137. among the

  1138. people.

  1139. Verse 34,

  1140. the kings,

  1141. the priests,

  1142. the fathers

  1143. have not

  1144. kept your

  1145. law.

  1146. It's all

  1147. of them

  1148. from the

  1149. top to

  1150. the bottom,

  1151. from the

  1152. greatest to

  1153. the least,

  1154. the whole

  1155. nation has

  1156. turned their

  1157. back on

  1158. God.

  1159. And so

  1160. now the

  1161. whole

  1162. leadership

  1163. of the

  1164. nation seeks

  1165. to turn

  1166. back to

  1167. God,

  1168. and to

  1169. turn the

  1170. people

  1171. back to

  1172. God.

  1173. Those who

  1174. knew the

  1175. law,

  1176. those who

  1177. should have

  1178. known the

  1179. Lord,

  1180. who should

  1181. have taught

  1182. the law,

  1183. ignored it,

  1184. they broke

  1185. it.

  1186. Though He

  1187. had fulfilled

  1188. every one of

  1189. His promises,

  1190. giving them

  1191. descendants,

  1192. giving them

  1193. the land,

  1194. blessing them

  1195. with good

  1196. fruit and

  1197. good gifts,

  1198. they failed

  1199. to honor

  1200. the giver.

  1201. And they

  1202. turned away

  1203. and threw

  1204. His law

  1205. behind their

  1206. back.

  1207. And the

  1208. irony is,

  1209. they ended

  1210. up in the

  1211. same state

  1212. they were

  1213. in before.

  1214. Verse 36

  1215. tells us that

  1216. we are slaves

  1217. this day

  1218. in the land

  1219. you gave to

  1220. our fathers.

  1221. We are

  1222. slaves.

  1223. slaves.

  1224. They inherited

  1225. towns and

  1226. cities they

  1227. hadn't built,

  1228. olives and

  1229. vineyards they

  1230. hadn't planted.

  1231. It was a

  1232. wonderful land

  1233. rich in

  1234. produce.

  1235. And now

  1236. their tenants

  1237. giving the

  1238. taxes and the

  1239. tributes to

  1240. the kings,

  1241. even their

  1242. own bodies,

  1243. are the

  1244. possession of

  1245. the kings

  1246. far away in

  1247. Persia.

  1248. home.

  1249. And you see

  1250. the irony,

  1251. when the

  1252. Lord heard

  1253. their cries,

  1254. they were

  1255. slaves in

  1256. Egypt.

  1257. And He

  1258. brought them

  1259. out with

  1260. these miraculous

  1261. signs,

  1262. these wonders,

  1263. brought them

  1264. out of Egypt,

  1265. brought them

  1266. to Himself

  1267. at Sinai.

  1268. And while

  1269. they enjoyed

  1270. their good

  1271. gifts,

  1272. they forgot

  1273. about the

  1274. giver.

  1275. And they

  1276. went their

  1277. own way.

  1278. And they

  1279. ended up

  1280. back in

  1281. slavery,

  1282. not in

  1283. Egypt,

  1284. but in

  1285. Israel,

  1286. in their

  1287. own place.

  1288. It's one

  1289. of the

  1290. ironies,

  1291. isn't it,

  1292. in the

  1293. modern world

  1294. that people

  1295. think becoming

  1296. a Christian

  1297. means some

  1298. kind of

  1299. loss of

  1300. personal

  1301. freedoms.

  1302. In some

  1303. way, if we

  1304. become a

  1305. Christian, we

  1306. have to

  1307. give up

  1308. the freedoms

  1309. that we

  1310. might have

  1311. to enjoy.

  1312. And of

  1313. course,

  1314. becoming a

  1315. Christian is

  1316. dying to

  1317. self.

  1318. It is a

  1319. path of

  1320. saying no

  1321. to self

  1322. and saying

  1323. yes to

  1324. Christ.

  1325. But it

  1326. is in

  1327. Christ that

  1328. we find

  1329. freedom.

  1330. It is

  1331. outside of

  1332. Christ,

  1333. Scripture

  1334. tells us,

  1335. that we

  1336. are enslaved.

  1337. It is in

  1338. Christ that

  1339. we find

  1340. fullness of

  1341. life.

  1342. John

    John 10:10

  1343. chapter 10

  1344. verse 10.

  1345. The people

  1346. were slaves.

  1347. God heard

  1348. them.

  1349. He heard

  1350. their cries.

  1351. He delivered

  1352. them out of

  1353. slavery.

  1354. He brought

  1355. them to a

  1356. place of

  1357. abundance and

  1358. blessing and

  1359. goodness.

  1360. And they

  1361. turned away.

  1362. And so they

  1363. found themselves

  1364. slaves once

  1365. more.

  1366. And realizing

  1367. their sorry

  1368. state, they

  1369. confessed their

  1370. sins to

  1371. God, the

  1372. sins of

  1373. their fathers,

  1374. the sins of

  1375. their leaders.

  1376. They cry

  1377. out to

  1378. Him for

  1379. His love

  1380. and His

  1381. mercy and

  1382. His grace.

  1383. And they

  1384. promise to

  1385. change their

  1386. ways to

  1387. demonstrate

  1388. their

  1389. repentance.

  1390. Verse 38,

  1391. they make

  1392. this firm

  1393. covenant and

  1394. the obligations

  1395. of the

  1396. covenant are

  1397. there for

  1398. us just

  1399. over the

  1400. page.

  1401. They resolve

  1402. not to turn

  1403. away but to

  1404. turn back to

  1405. the living

  1406. God, not

  1407. to cast

  1408. His law

  1409. behind their

  1410. backs but to

  1411. open it before

  1412. their eyes and

  1413. to hide it in

  1414. their hearts and

  1415. to walk in the

  1416. ways He has

  1417. commanded them

  1418. to do.

  1419. And they

  1420. appeal once

  1421. more to His

  1422. great mercy.

  1423. They appeal to

  1424. the promise He

  1425. made to their

  1426. forefather,

  1427. Abraham.

  1428. They appeal to

  1429. His steadfast

  1430. love and His

  1431. faithfulness.

  1432. And in a

  1433. sense they're

  1434. saying to

  1435. Him, Lord,

  1436. as You

  1437. treated our

  1438. forefathers when

  1439. they sinned,

  1440. when You

  1441. welcomed them

  1442. back, when

  1443. You showed

  1444. them Your

  1445. mercy and

  1446. grace, when

  1447. You pardoned

  1448. them all of

  1449. their sins and

  1450. trespass, would

  1451. You do it

  1452. again?

  1453. Would You do

  1454. it in our

  1455. day?

  1456. Would You do

  1457. it in our

  1458. lives?

  1459. Would You

  1460. do it in

  1461. our lives?

  1462. Will You

  1463. not again

  1464. revive us,

  1465. says Psalm 85?

  1466. That we may

  1467. rejoice in You.

  1468. Show us, Lord,

  1469. Your covenant

  1470. mercy, Your

  1471. salvation grant

  1472. anew.

  1473. That is their

  1474. prayer.

  1475. They're asking

  1476. God to forgive

  1477. them as He

  1478. forgave their

  1479. forefathers.

  1480. And so the

  1481. chapter,

  1482. lengthy chapter,

  1483. very helpful

  1484. review of the

  1485. history of

  1486. Israel, a

  1487. survey, a

  1488. summary of

  1489. Old Testament

  1490. history.

  1491. But a rich

  1492. revelation of

  1493. the character

  1494. of God.

  1495. Slow to

  1496. anger,

  1497. gracious and

  1498. merciful,

  1499. faithful to

  1500. His promises,

  1501. abounding in

  1502. steadfast love.

  1503. He is the

  1504. one who takes

  1505. the initiative,

  1506. who makes and

  1507. who keeps His

  1508. promise.

  1509. He is the

  1510. one who delivers

  1511. people from

  1512. their distress

  1513. when they cry

  1514. to Him.

  1515. He is the

  1516. one that gives

  1517. to His redeemed

  1518. people good

  1519. gifts and

  1520. who is with

  1521. them day and

  1522. night.

  1523. He is the

  1524. one who forgives

  1525. the unfaithful,

  1526. for He is

  1527. faithful.

  1528. And they say to

  1529. Him, Lord, would

  1530. you do it again?

  1531. Would you give us

  1532. another chance?

  1533. Do it again,

  1534. Lord.

  1535. Lord.

  1536. We mustn't lose

  1537. sight of the

  1538. goodness of God.

  1539. He blessed the

  1540. people abundantly.

  1541. I stayed with a

  1542. friend last night

  1543. in Ullapool,

  1544. and just late at

  1545. night we were

  1546. chatting, and

  1547. then again this

  1548. morning, and he

  1549. just out of the

  1550. blue said,

1551. do you know if we

  1552. thanked the

  1553. Lord for all His

  1554. gift stuffs, we'd

  1555. never have time to

  1556. talk about anything

  1557. else.

  1558. just awareness of

  1559. the goodness of

  1560. God, the God who

  1561. gives so much that

  1562. we delight in His

  1563. great goodness.

  1564. But we mustn't

  1565. lose sight of the

  1566. grace of God.

  1567. It was God's grace

  1568. that called Abraham,

  1569. God's grace that

  1570. took the initiative,

  1571. God's grace that

  1572. made the promise

  1573. to Him.

  1574. And as we're

  1575. sitting here tonight,

  1576. we mustn't lose

  1577. sight of the grace

  1578. of God and the

  1579. initiative of God

  1580. in our lives.

  1581. How did you come

  1582. to be in this

  1583. place?

  1584. How did you come

  1585. to be in Christ?

  1586. Was it through a

  1587. praying relative,

  1588. maybe a granny,

  1589. or a grandfather

  1590. that prayed for you

  1591. by name every day?

  1592. Was it through a

  1593. godly influence in

  1594. the home, a

  1595. mother or father

  1596. that taught you,

  1597. prayed with you,

  1598. sang with you,

  1599. brought you Lord's

  1600. day by Lord's

  1601. day to church?

  1602. Was there a

  1603. teacher in the

  1604. school?

  1605. Was there a

  1606. Sunday school

  1607. teacher?

  1608. Was there a

  1609. Christian friend

  1610. who came into

  1611. your life and

  1612. showed great

  1613. faithfulness to

  1614. you?

  1615. Was it through

  1616. the ministry of a

  1617. minister, perhaps a

  1618. visiting missionary?

1619. Or was it simply a

  1620. prompting of the

1621. Spirit to go into a

  1622. building at the time

1623. of a service and to

  1624. see what was going

  1625. to happen there?

  1626. The Lord in His

  1627. grace takes the

  1628. initiative, sending

  1629. people into our

  1630. lives to share with

  1631. us the gospel, to

  1632. share with us the

  1633. encouragement to keep

  1634. living as a

  1635. Christian.

  1636. Because of that

  1637. grace, He

  1638. welcomed His people

  1639. back time and

  1640. again.

  1641. And that's true of

  1642. us.

  1643. Before He went to

  1644. Calvary's cross, the

  1645. Lord made a new

  1646. covenant in His

  1647. blood, the covenant

  1648. the Old Testament

  1649. prophets had looked

  1650. forward to.

  1651. And He made a

  1652. promise that all who

  1653. trusted in Him would

  1654. receive forgiveness

  1655. and freedom and

  1656. fullness of life.

  1657. life.

  1658. And yet we can

  1659. often lose sight of

  1660. that.

  1661. As the people in

  1662. Nehemiah's day might

  1663. not have been

  1664. mindful of the

  1665. great works the

  1666. Lord had done.

1667. We can forget to be

  1668. mindful of the

  1669. great work done at

  1670. Calvary.

  1671. It might be a

  1672. simple thing, just

  1673. busy with life,

  1674. busy with job,

  1675. busy with career,

  1676. busy with raising

  1677. up children or

  1678. grandchildren, vital

  1679. role, vital

  1680. responsibilities, but

  1681. we can crowd out

  1682. the things of God.

  1683. We can let the

  1684. devotional time

  1685. slide.

  1686. We can let the

  1687. family devotion

  1688. slip.

  1689. We can find

  1690. ourselves not

  1691. regularly in the

  1692. Lord's house.

  1693. We might just

  1694. prioritize other

  1695. things over our

  1696. Christian walk.

  1697. We might enjoy all

  1698. the good things God

  1699. gives, but we might

  1700. enjoy them perhaps in

  1701. the wrong priorities,

  1702. hobbies, good in

  1703. themselves, but which

  1704. seem to expand to

  1705. fill all the

  1706. available time, which

  1707. draw our best

  1708. affections, which

  1709. concentrate our best

  1710. attentions.

  1711. things.

1712. Or it may be we want to

  1713. play down our

  1714. Christian life, keep

  1715. it quiet, keep it

  1716. private, don't want any

1717. friction at home or in

  1718. the workplace or among

  1719. friends.

1720. Or it may be you're here

  1721. tonight.

  1722. Maybe you're surprised to

  1723. be here tonight because

  1724. you've openly and very

  1725. deliberately turned away

  1726. from your Christian faith,

  1727. faith.

  1728. Like the people in

  1729. verse 26, you've cast

  1730. God's law behind your

  1731. back.

1732. You were raised in the

  1733. church, been prayed for

  1734. and taught, but you

  1735. shy away from the

  1736. claims of Christ.

  1737. The call to deny

1738. self, the call to take

1739. up your cross, the call

1740. to be a stranger in this

  1741. world.

1742. And you think that more

  1743. peace and happiness and

  1744. freedom will be found

1745. outside of Christ and in

  1746. Him and among His

  1747. people.

1748. The Lord warns us that

  1749. He may discipline those

  1750. He loves.

1751. He warns us that if we

  1752. turn from the freedom

1753. we have in Christ, we

  1754. might, like the

  1755. Israelites, find

  1756. ourselves back in

  1757. slavery.

1758. But He gives a word of

  1759. encouragement that He

  1760. keeps His promise, that

  1761. He is faithful, that

  1762. His mercies are great.

  1763. They are new every

  1764. morning.

1765. The Apostle John in his

1766. first letter says, if we

1767. claim we have no sin, we

  1768. deceive ourselves and the

1769. truth is not in us.

1770. But if we confess our

1771. sins, as the men and

  1772. women of Nehemiah's day

1773. confessed their sins, He is

  1774. faithful and just to

1775. forgive us our sins and to

  1776. cleanse us from all

  1777. unrighteousness.

  1778. God's great mercies

  1779. sending forth Christ, the

1780. Son of Abraham, to make

1781. the new covenant in His

1782. blood and so for the

1783. blessings of the gospel to

1784. flow to the whole world.

1785. God doesn't mean we can be

  1786. presumptuous.

  1787. A philosopher once wrote,

1788. God will forgive me, that's

  1789. His job.

1790. It's what God does, what He

  1791. did.

  1792. But we mustn't be

  1793. presumptuous.

1794. But we can be confident that

1795. if we come before Him as the

1796. people of Nehemiah's day came

  1797. before Him and acknowledge

1798. and confess our sins and

1799. own our sins and say, Lord,

1800. we have strayed, we have

1801. wandered, we have gone our

  1802. own way.

1803. But as you forgave our

  1804. forefathers, would you

  1805. forgive us?

1806. Would you remember again your

  1807. covenant?

1808. Would you show once more your

1809. great mercies and forgive us

1810. and cleanse us from all

  1811. unrighteousness?

1812. I will hear what God the

1813. Lord says to His saints.

1814. He offers peace, but His

1815. people must not wander and

  1816. return to foolishness.

1817. Surely for all those who fear

1818. Him, His salvation is at

1819. hand so that once again His

1820. glory may be seen within our

  1821. land.

1822. He offers peace tonight to the

  1823. troubled conscience.

1824. He offers us a way out of

  1825. returning to foolishness.

1826. And He offers once more His

1827. grace to any whose hearts have

1828. gone astray to welcome us back

1829. as the Father welcomed back the

1830. prodigal so that His glory may be

1831. seen once more within our land

  1832. and within our lives.

1833. Well, may God give us the grace

1834. to respond in faith and to look

1835. into our hearts and then to look

  1836. to Him this weekend.

1837. I just want to pray once more

1838. before we sing our final item of

  1839. praise.

  1840. praise.

1841. And we'll just pray together now.

1842. Gracious God, we do bless your

1843. name, the name that is exalted above

  1844. all blessing and praise.

1845. Bless you as our Creator, the Maker of

  1846. the heavens and earth.

1847. I bless you as the one who made all

1848. things and the one who made covenant

  1849. with your people.

1850. Father, we thank you that in a world

1851. of lies and fake news, your word is

  1852. true.

1853. In a world of broken promises and

1854. broken dreams, your promises are

1855. sure for you are righteous.

1856. We thank you that you're kind to us

1857. hearing our prayers, providing for

1858. our every needs, giving to us more

1859. than we could ever ask or imagine.

1860. And we thank you, Lord, for your

1861. mercy and your grace that you are

  1862. patient, long-suffering.

1863. Lord, even when we stiffen our necks,

1864. even when we turn a stubborn shoulder

1865. towards you, even when we cast your

1866. words behind our back or stop our

1867. ears to hear what you have to say to

1868. us, that you bear with us.

1869. You do not make an end to us.

1870. You do not forsake us.

1871. For you are gracious, merciful, slow to

1872. anger and abounding in steadfast and

  1873. covenant love.

1874. Lord, tonight and this weekend we ask

1875. that you would teach us the height, the

1876. depth, the breadth, the length of that

  1877. love.

1878. And as we look at our lives, as we

1879. inspect the state of our hearts, that in

1880. your goodness and mercy you would forgive

1881. us from our ingratitude, from our

1882. insolence, even from our indifference,

1883. from our apathy to the things that are

  1884. eternal.

1885. Would you not again revive us that we may

  1886. rejoice in you?

1887. Lord, show us your covenant mercy, your

  1888. salvation grant anew.

1889. So, Lord, this night, this weekend, this is

1890. our prayer, that you will be glorified,

1891. that we might respond to your grace, come

1892. to you to be refreshed, come back to you

1893. after perhaps a time away.

1894. I'll come to you, Lord, even for the first

1895. time, and to taste and see that you, our

  1896. Lord, are good.

1897. And so we thank you for your amazing grace

1898. given to us in Christ, in whose name we

  1899. pray.

  1900. Amen.

1901. Well, to end our time together, I wanted to

1902. sing the metrical version of Psalm 126,

1903. Psalm that speaks of the return from exile

1904. and from joy emerging from sorrow.

1905. Psalm 126, the metrical version,

1906. when Zion's bondage God turned back,

1907. as men that dreamed were we, then filled

1908. with laughter was our mouth, our tongue

  1909. with melody.

1910. We sing to close to God's praise.

1911. Psalm 126, the metrical version,

1912. when Zion's bondage God turned back, as in a tree

  1913. in her way.

1914. When filled with laughter was our mouth, our tongue

  1915. with melody.

1916. They mount the need and said, the Lord, with things more than

  1917. the throne.

1918. The Lord has done, the Lord has done, the Lord has done, the King's bondage God,

1919. when joy to us is done.

1920. As streams of water in the south are haunted sharply gall,

1921. whose soul endures the leaping time of joy and joy they shall.

1922. That man who hailing precious seed, enrolling for the corn,

1923. the earth is bringing at his sheep, rejoicing shall return.

1924. So may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,

1925. and the love of God our Heavenly Father,

1926. and the fellowship of his Holy Spirit be with us now, this evening, and forevermore.

  1927. Amen.

  1928. Amen.

  1929. Amen.

  1930. Amen.

  1931. Amen.

  1932. Amen.
