  1. Begin our worship now. We're going to sing firstly today from Psalm 122, and that's on page 416,

  2. singing the whole psalm to the Tune Free Church.

  3. I joyed when to the house of God go up, they said to me, Jerusalem within thy gates,

  4. our feet shall standing be. Jerusalem as a city is compactly built together,

  5. and to that place the tribes go up, the tribes of God go thither. Back to the days of Israel

  6. in the Old Testament, when they used to go up to the temple to meet together there, various festivals

  7. and times of worship. And the emphasis in the psalm is one of great joy, which should characterize us

  8. as we come before God, to be joyous in His presence, to rejoice in His salvation, to actually have our

  9. hearts stirred as we come to realize the privilege that is ours every time we come together as

  10. worshipers together. So, Psalm 122, we stand for the singings. If you're able to stand,

  11. I joyed when to the house of God.

  12. I joyed when to the house of God.

  13. Go up, they said to me, Jerusalem within thy gates, our feet shall standing be.

  14. Jerusalem as a city is compactly built together, and to that place the tribes go up, the tribes

  15. of God.

  16. Jerusalem as a city is compactly built together, and to that place the tribes of God.

  17. To Israel's testimony, where to God's name come to pray, for thrones of judgment came the thrones of the

  18. of David's house first day.

  19. Jerusalem as a city is compactly built together, and to that place the earth has been

  20. filled with us and filled with us. And the land of Jerusalem has been filled with us, and

  21. the land of Jerusalem may have peace and felicity. Let them that love thee and thy

  22. And thy peace have still prosperity.

  23. Therefore I wish that peace may still

  24. within thy walls remain.

  25. And ever may thy power see, prosperity retain.

  26. Now for my friends and brethren's sakes,

  27. peace be in thee I'll say.

  28. And for the house of God our Lord,

  29. I'll seek thy good always.

  30. Now we're going to join together briefly in prayer.

  31. And prayer at this point is particularly for the young folks

  32. and for the Sunday school.

  33. So let's bow our heads to pray.

  34. Our gracious and eternal God,

  35. we give thanks today that we're able to meet in this way here,

  36. in this place of worship.

  37. And we give thanks that as we do so,

  38. we have our young people with us.

  39. We thank you, Lord, for the valuable place they have in the congregation.

  40. And we pray for them today as they meet together in Sunday school

  41. and other activities.

  42. And we thank you for all who come

  43. and for all parents who bring children and grandparents

  44. to be joined together with us in worship

  45. and to meet together in the Sunday school.

  46. Bless, we pray, each and every one of these young lives.

  47. And we pray as they begin a new session

  48. that you would help those who teach them and lead them

  49. as we give thanks for them too.

  50. We ask, O Lord, that your blessing will follow them,

  51. that they may come to be more and more rooted in your truth,

  52. that their lives may be developed and be shaped by your word,

  53. that they may be able to resist the many different ways

  54. in which the world around us

  55. seeks to pull us away from those things that are important,

  56. those things that are conducive to our growth

  57. in righteousness and holiness and the biblical morality.

  58. And, Lord, we ask for your Holy Spirit

  59. to bless all of these young lives today.

  60. Be pleased now, we pray, to go before us

  61. in the remainder of the service, hear this, our prayer,

  62. and pardon our sin for Jesus' sake.

  63. Amen.

  64. Amen.

  65. Right, before you go through,

  66. I'm just going to say a few words to you,

  67. for the young folks especially.

  68. It's for the older ones too, I'm sure,

  69. but it's for the young folks especially.

  70. Right, hands up, children,

  71. all of those of you who like spiders.

  72. Whoops.

  73. Nobody likes spiders.

  74. Oh, there's some of the backs, eh?

  75. Yes, they like spiders.

  76. Well, we should like spiders.

  77. You know why?

  78. Because spiders are really good to remove things like flies

  79. and other beasties that come into our houses

  80. and actually might be carrying some disease or other.

  81. You never know where flies have been

  82. before they land on your bread or on your food or whatever.

  83. So spiders actually kill flies.

  84. They actually, as you know, they weave webs.

  85. The flies get stuck in the web.

  86. The spider then eats them.

  87. Not very pleasant, but it's good to know

  88. that spiders actually help us in that way.

  89. Well, there's a story about a spider

  90. or a man who really was protected by a spider's web.

  91. Long ago in Scotland, this happened,

  92. a man was being chased by his enemies.

  93. The enemies were soldiers.

  94. And they were chasing this man

  95. and he was running away from them.

  96. They weren't really in a great hurry.

  97. They knew they probably,

  98. they realized they probably would catch him eventually.

  99. But he went off at great speed.

  100. And when he was out of sight,

  101. where the soldiers couldn't see him,

  102. he came across a very small cave,

  103. a very low entrance cave

  104. that you needed to crawl into

  105. in order to get inside.

  106. So he crawled into the cave

  107. and laid down there as far in as he could

  108. and just waited to see what would happen.

  109. And he was pretty sure

  110. that the soldiers, as they chased him,

  111. would actually find him eventually.

  112. So he began thinking about

  113. what he was going to do

  114. when the soldiers actually discovered the cave

  115. and saw that he was inside.

  116. But as he was waiting for quite a long time,

  117. a spider began to weave a web

  118. across the mouth of the cave.

  119. And pretty soon,

  120. most of that entrance

  121. was covered by the spider's web.

  122. And a while after that,

  123. he heard voices.

  124. And these were the soldiers looking for him.

  125. And they came to this cave

  126. and he heard one of them

  127. shouting to another soldier nearby.

  128. He said,

  129. there's nobody here.

  130. Nobody,

  131. there can't be anybody in here.

  132. But if anybody had gone into that cave,

  133. he was thinking,

  134. it would have broken the spider's web

  135. and given the clue that he was inside.

  136. So that spider's web

  137. protected that soldier,

  138. protected that man from the soldiers.

  139. And off they went to look for him somewhere else.

  140. And somebody wrote,

  141. when they heard about that incident,

  142. somebody wrote this.

  143. If God is on your side,

  144. a spider's web

  145. is as good as a stone wall.

  146. If God is not on your side,

  147. a stone wall

  148. is no better than a spider's web.

  149. We're talking about protection.

  150. How God looks after his people

  151. and how believing in Jesus

  152. brings us into the protection of God.

  153. It doesn't mean protecting from everything

  154. that's going to happen to us in life,

  155. but protection especially

  156. from the result of our sin,

  157. where God's own anger,

  158. where God's own displeasure

  159. is directed against us

  160. till we come to believe in Jesus.

  161. And when we come to believe in Jesus,

  162. then we're protected from that

  163. by being safe in Jesus.

  164. Paul,

  165. when he wrote to the Romans,

  166. said,

  167. there is now therefore no condemnation.

  168. Teachers can explain that

  169. to the young ones

  170. in the Sunday school.

  171. What's condemnation?

  172. There is therefore now

  173. no condemnation

  174. to those who are in Christ Jesus.

  175. When we come to believe in Jesus,

  176. we come to be taken

  177. into the protective care of Jesus.

  178. And therefore we are safe.

  179. We are saved.

  180. We come to belong to God's people.

  181. And whatever happens to us in the world,

  182. we're safe

  183. because we're then on the way

  184. to heaven

  185. where we're safe forevermore.

  186. So next time you see a spider

  187. or next time you see a spider's web,

  188. remember that story.

  189. Remember to ask yourself,

  190. am I living a safe life?

  191. Do I believe in Jesus

  192. for my protection forevermore?

  193. Or am I still not one of those

  194. who are in Christ Jesus?

  195. Now we're going to say

  196. the Lord's Prayer again together.

  197. So let's just say the Lord's Prayer

  198. before you go through to your rooms.

  199. Our Father,

  200. which art in heaven,

  201. hallowed be thy name.

  202. Thy kingdom come.

  203. Thy will be done on earth

  204. as it is in heaven.

  205. Give us this day our daily bread.

  206. And forgive us our debts

  207. as we forgive our debtors.

  208. And lead us not into temptation,

  209. but deliver us from evil.

  210. For thine is the kingdom,

  211. the power and the glory forever.

  212. Amen.

  213. Let's sing once more now.

  214. We're singing this time from Psalm 42.

  215. Psalm 42.

  216. Again, it's in the Scottish Psalter,

  217. page 262.

  218. And singing to the tune,

  219. Glencairn.

  220. And in this psalm,

  221. we find the psalmist who wrote the psalm.

  222. We find him longing for God.

  223. He is actually away from the people of God

  224. at that time.

  225. In verse 4,

  226. you can see when he's thinking about

  227. what happened in the past,

  228. for whatever reason,

  229. he's not able to join with God's people,

  230. the multitude,

  231. when he went with them to God's house.

  232. That would be to the temple

  233. with voice of joy and praise.

  234. So he's thinking back to that

  235. and he's longing to be back again

  236. with those people of God

  237. as they come together to worship him.

  238. So it's like us,

  239. the heart for water brooks

  240. and thirst at pant and bray.

  241. So pants my longing soul,

  242. O God,

  243. that come to thee I may.

  244. The heart for the young folks,

  245. the heart was a kind of deer.

  246. And the deer,

  247. when it's out in a desert area,

  248. especially at times,

  249. longs to get water if it's thirsty.

  250. And so the psalmist is comparing himself

  251. to these deer

  252. and he himself is longing

  253. to take a drink of God's word

  254. in worship with his people.

  255. Let's sing verses 1 to 5

  256. to the tune Glencairn

  257. to God's praise.

  258. Like as the heart for water brooks,

  259. in thirst doth pant and bray,

  260. so pants my longing soul,

  261. O God,

  262. that come to thee I may.

  263. My soul for God,

  264. the living God,

  265. that first when shall I near,

  266. and to thy countenance approach,

  267. and in God's sight appear.

  268. My tears have unto me been meed,

  269. both in the night and day.

  270. While unto me continually,

  271. where is thy God they say?

  272. My soul is poured out to me,

  273. when this I think upon,

  274. because that with the multitude

  275. I here tofore had gone.

  276. With them into God's house I went,

  277. with voice of joy and praise,

  278. yea, with the multitude that kept

  279. the solemn holy days.

  280. O why art thou cast out my soul,

  281. why in this soul is laid?

  282. Thus God,

  283. for I shall praise him yet,

  284. his countenance is mine.

  285. Now if you turn with me please

  286. to Matthew chapter 18.

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  287. I'm going to read God's word there

  288. at Matthew chapter 18,

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  289. the Gospel of Matthew.

  290. And we're going to read

  291. the first 20 verses of this chapter.

  292. Matthew 18, verses 1 to 20.

    Matthew 18:1–20

  293. At that time the disciples came to Jesus saying,

  294. Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

  295. And calling to him a child,

  296. he put him in the midst of them

  297. and said,

  298. Truly I say to you,

  299. unless you turn and become like children,

  300. you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

  301. Whoever humbles himself like this child

  302. is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

  303. Whoever receives one such child

  304. in my name receives me.

  305. But whoever causes one of these little ones

  306. who believe in me to sin,

  307. it would be better for him

  308. to have a millstone

  309. fastened round his neck

  310. and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

  311. Woe to the world for temptations to sin.

  312. For it is necessary that temptations come.

  313. But woe to the one by whom

  314. the temptation comes.

  315. And if your hand or your foot

  316. causes you to sin,

  317. cut it off and throw it away.

  318. It is better for you

  319. to enter life crippled or lame

  320. than with two hands or two feet

  321. to be thrown into the eternal fire.

  322. And if your eye causes you to sin,

  323. tear it out and throw it away.

  324. It is better for you

  325. to enter life with one eye

  326. than with two eyes to be thrown

  327. into the hell of fire.

  328. See that you do not despise

  329. one of these little ones.

  330. For I tell you that in heaven

  331. their angels always see

  332. the face of my Father

  333. who is in heaven.

  334. What do you think?

  335. If a man has a hundred sheep

  336. and one of them has gone astray,

  337. does he not leave the ninety-nine

  338. on the mountain

  339. and go in search of the one

  340. that went astray?

  341. And if he finds it,

  342. truly I say to you,

  343. he rejoices over it

  344. more than over the ninety-nine

  345. that never went astray.

  346. So it is not the will of my Father

  347. who is in heaven

  348. that one of these little ones

  349. should perish.

  350. If your brother sins against you,

  351. go and tell him his fault

  352. between you and him alone.

  353. If he listens to you,

  354. you have gained your brother.

  355. But if he does not listen,

  356. take one or two others along with you

  357. that every charge may be established

  358. by the evidence of two or three witnesses.

  359. If he refuses to listen to them,

  360. tell it to the church.

  361. And if he refuses to listen

  362. even to the church,

  363. let him be to you as a Gentile

  364. and a tax collector.

  365. Truly I say to you,

  366. whatever you bind on earth

  367. shall be bound in heaven,

  368. and whatever you loose on earth

  369. shall be loosed in heaven.

  370. Again I say to you,

  371. if two of you agree on earth

  372. about anything they ask,

  373. it will be done for them

  374. by my Father in heaven.

  375. For where two or three

  376. are gathered in my name,

  377. there am I among them.

  378. May God bless to us

  379. by reading anew of his word

  380. to his own praise.

  381. Before we come back

  382. to look at the final verse

  383. that we read there,

  384. verse 20,

  385. we're going to sing again

  386. this time in Psalm 87.

  387. Psalm 87 from the Sing Psalms version

  388. this time on page 115.

  389. We're singing to the tune,

  390. in Sussex.

  391. On Jerusalem's holy mountain

  392. he has founded his abode.

  393. More than all of Jacob's dwellings,

  394. Zion's gates are near,

  395. are dear to God.

  396. Glorious things of you are spoken,

  397. Zion, city of the Lord.

  398. Many drawn from all the nations,

  399. as your people I record.

  400. When you find Zion in the Old Testament

  401. referred to in this way,

  402. it refers to Zion as the church of God

  403. gathered in different places,

  404. especially here.

  405. He's talking here about

  406. Zion gathered together,

  407. and how the blessing of God

  408. accompanies the gatherings of his people,

  409. and how God delights

  410. in Zion's gates,

  411. it says there in verse 2,

  412. more than all of Jacob's dwellings.

  413. That's generally been interpreted as

  414. how the Lord delights

  415. in the gatherings of his people,

  416. even more than to meet with them individually.

  417. So we'll sing these verses,

  418. Psalm 87,

  419. to Tune Sussex,

  420. on Jerusalem,

  421. Jerusalem's holy mountain.

  422. Amen.

  423. Glorious things of you are spoken,

  424. Zion, city of the Lord.

  425. Many drawn from all the nations,

  426. as your people I record.

  427. I will name as those who know me,

  428. Egypt, Tyre, and Babylon.

  429. Eilestine, along with whose sight,

  430. I will count as Zion born.

  431. Yes, it will be said of time,

  432. this and that on here belong,

  433. and on earth the highest blessing

  434. will descend and make her strong.

  435. Born in Zion,

  436. what will enter?

  437. Then the peoples register,

  438. they will sing our family music,

  439. all my pountains are in love.

  440. Amen.

  441. Well, let's turn now for a short time

  442. to Matthew 18.

  443. Matthew chapter 18.

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  444. I'd like us to consider verse 20

  445. of this chapter.

  446. For where two or three

  447. are gathered in my name,

  448. there am I among them.

  449. This is, of course,

  450. Jesus speaking to his disciples.

  451. Where two or three are gathered in my name,

  452. there am I among them.

  453. Now, as mentioned in the intimations,

  454. I want to begin a short series of studies today,

  455. maybe some 10, 11, 12 studies the most,

  456. and it's going to be on the theme

  457. of the gathered church.

  458. By the gathered church,

  459. we're going to be looking specifically

  460. at the church gathered as we are today

  461. in a congregational setting,

  462. and some of the important aspects

  463. of how we gather together

  464. and why we gather together,

  465. particularly in worship,

  466. though there are other activities

  467. for which we gather together as well.

  468. And, of course,

  469. God is gathering his church

  470. from all over the world.

  471. According to the promise of the Bible,

  472. God is busy all the time

  473. gathering his church together,

  474. different denominations,

  475. different countries,

  476. different backgrounds,

  477. all of that,

  478. and building them into the one church of God,

  479. the one people of God,

  480. wherever we're based,

  481. and however much we may differ

  482. from other different parts of the world.

  483. So that's one aspect of gathering,

  484. but here it's specifically referring

  485. to the gathered church

  486. in a congregational sense,

  487. which two or three,

  488. where they are gathered in my name,

  489. there I am among them.

  490. And so we're looking at the gathering

  491. of the church.

  492. We're actually very conscious

  493. of the benefits we've received

  494. ever since the pandemic

  495. of having online services

  496. and having live stream services.

  497. I don't want to minimize that.

  498. That's a real blessing from God.

  499. But it can actually be something

  500. of a drawback as well,

  501. because we can come to rely on the fact

  502. that we don't need to actually

  503. physically attend

  504. in order to join with a service

  505. that's live or that's taking place.

  506. And what we want to see

  507. through these studies

  508. is the importance

  509. of actually gathering

  510. physically together

  511. and the benefits that accrue

  512. to us from doing that

  513. compared with actually

  514. watching a service

  515. or taking part in a service

  516. virtually without actually

  517. gathering with the Lord's people.

  518. A pastor in Atlanta

  519. called John Onwuchekwa,

  520. I think that's how you pronounce it,

  521. but this is what he said

  522. at one time of his own experience

  523. as a youngster.

  524. He said,

  525. I thought I hated baseball.

  526. I watched it to cure insomnia.

  527. Then one day in elementary school,

  528. my friends came to the door

  529. with aluminum baseball bats

  530. and tennis balls.

  531. We used cars and landposts

  532. in our cul-de-sac as bases,

  533. and we started playing baseball.

  534. And you know what?

  535. Baseball wasn't all that bad.

  536. In fact, baseball was great.

  537. It was suddenly engaging

  538. and enjoyable.

  539. We played for hours,

  540. and the time just flew by.

  541. It wasn't baseball I hated.

  542. It was just watching it.

  543. What made the difference?

  544. Participation, he says.

  545. The worth of the sport

  546. shouldn't be judged

  547. by spectating,

  548. but by participating.

  549. And I want to change

  550. that last sentence a bit

  551. just to swap the word sport

  552. for the word church.

  553. The worth of the church

  554. shouldn't be judged

  555. by spectating,

  556. but by participating.

  557. And that's what we're really about

  558. in thinking of the church

  559. as gathered

  560. or the gathered church

  561. in the different ways

  562. in which we can see

  563. the importance of that.

  564. Because the Bible tells us

  565. that it's as gathered together,

  566. especially as gathered together,

  567. that we grow

  568. in our understanding

  569. of the Bible,

  570. that we grow

  571. in our appreciation

  572. of each other.

  573. It's as we gather together

  574. that we actually come

  575. to grow spiritually

  576. in our development

  577. in a spiritual

  578. and moral development.

  579. It's as we come together

  580. and grow together

  581. and be together

  582. and meet together

  583. and discuss together

  584. and worship together

  585. that we find ourselves

  586. using the gifts

  587. that God has given us

  588. for the growth

  589. of his kingdom.

  590. All of that is packed

  591. into the important matter

  592. of being gathered together.

  593. And you'll notice

  594. all the way through the Bible

  595. that you have many times

  596. plurals used

  597. to describe

  598. what God's people do.

  599. If you go through

  600. the letters of the Apostle Paul,

  601. even when he's thinking

  602. of such things

  603. as being sanctified,

  604. being made holy,

  605. which we tend

  606. to individualize

  607. perhaps too much.

  608. Of course,

  609. we all need to develop

  610. individually.

  611. We all need to grow

  612. spiritually

  613. as individual Christians.

  614. We all need to

  615. be sanctified individually.

  616. All of these things

  617. are important

  618. in an individual basis.

  619. But if you go through

  620. the letters of the Apostle Paul,

  621. more often than not,

  622. you'll find him saying,

  623. these things are done together.

  624. You are sanctified

  625. as you meet together,

  626. as you actually gather together,

  627. as you are seen together

  628. and appreciate being together.

  629. All of that,

  630. that's why he uses

  631. the pronouns they

  632. and we

  633. and you

  634. in the plural.

  635. Pronouns.

  636. Well,

  637. they're important

  638. in today's society

  639. and for all the wrong reasons.

  640. But the Bible's use

  641. of plurals

  642. is itself

  643. significant for us

  644. because it's one way

  645. in which it reminds us

  646. that we are a plurality,

  647. that we meet together

  648. not as disjointed individuals,

  649. but as a spiritual body

  650. of people,

  651. as the gathered church

  652. of God.

  653. And in a world

  654. where individualism

  655. has for so long

  656. been a feature

  657. of people's thinking

  658. and people's behavior,

  659. the church

  660. in this world,

  661. the church on earth,

  662. the gathered church,

  663. should be

  664. the least

  665. individualistic

  666. body

  667. on earth.

  668. There should be

  669. no room

  670. for individualism

  671. here in this congregation,

  672. any other congregation

  673. of God's people,

  674. because individualism,

  675. as you find it all

  676. too often

  677. in the world

  678. out there,

  679. really says,

  680. I'm in charge

  681. of my own life.

  682. Nobody needs to tell me

  683. how to run my life.

  684. I'll do this

  685. because it feels right

  686. for me to do it.

  687. I'll think of my identity

  688. the way I want to feel

  689. about my identity.

  690. I'll see

  691. to my genders,

  692. I'll see to all the things

  693. that affect me

  694. as an individual.

  695. It doesn't matter

  696. what anybody else says,

  697. and especially

  698. it doesn't matter

  699. what the likes

  700. of the Bible says

  701. or the church says,

  702. I am the boss

  703. of my own life.

  704. And as you meet

  705. together as a church,

  706. and as we seem

  707. to meet together

  708. as a church,

  709. the gathered church

  710. is one of the main ways

  711. in which we counter

  712. the worldly culture

  713. of the world.

  714. That's so important

  715. to us

  716. as individuals

  717. but also collectively.

  718. So that's where

  719. we're coming to

  720. this theme

  721. from the gathered church.

  722. And if you come now

  723. to this verse

  724. in verse 20,

  725. Jesus saying,

  726. for where two or three

  727. are gathered in my name,

  728. there am I among them.

  729. And two things

  730. really strike you.

  731. We'll use these

  732. just as our headings

  733. briefly from that verse.

  734. First of all,

  735. he talks here about

  736. being gathered

  737. in his name.

  738. As many as

  739. two or three

  740. are gathered

  741. in my name.

  742. So they're gathered

  743. in Christ's name.

  744. And the second thing

  745. that comes across strongly

  746. is the fact that

  747. he in these gatherings

  748. is there among them.

  749. Christ's presence

  750. in his church,

  751. in the gatherings

  752. of his church.

  753. And the two things

  754. are very closely connected.

  755. Look at the context here.

  756. It's to do with the church.

  757. We're not going to go through

  758. the various parts

  759. of the passage,

  760. but you can see

  761. how it goes

  762. step by step

  763. from what he looks at

  764. as a matter of

  765. pastoral importance

  766. or even discipline.

  767. A brother sins

  768. against another.

  769. How you go and try

  770. and gain that brother,

  771. reconcile to your brother

  772. or sister.

  773. And if he refuses

  774. to listen,

  775. then you take with you

  776. some witnesses.

  777. You try and do it

  778. in that way,

  779. first of all.

  780. And if that fails,

  781. then you tell it

  782. to the church.

  783. You get the church

  784. to come in.

  785. In other words,

  786. this is a passage

  787. that's always been regarded

  788. as a passage important

  789. regarding the discipline

  790. that ought to be

  791. taking place

  792. in the church.

  793. Now, don't think

  794. of the word discipline

  795. as just punishment.

  796. Discipline is a matter

  797. of order,

  798. keeping order,

  799. keeping good order

  800. in the church.

  801. And it's an important feature

  802. of the church

  803. described in the Bible.

  804. I'm not going to go into that,

  805. but it's the context.

  806. That's the context

  807. in which Jesus

  808. is speaking these words.

  809. And then he widens it out

  810. by talking about

  811. those who ask God,

  812. the Father in heaven.

  813. And verse 19,

  814. if two of you agree

  815. on earth about anything

  816. they ask,

  817. it will be done for them

  818. by my Father in heaven.

  819. And that takes you

  820. into the area

  821. of prayer

  822. and of being together

  823. in prayer

  824. and of having

  825. God's people

  826. sharing in prayer

  827. to God the Father

  828. and seeking His blessing.

  829. And then it widens out

  830. even further,

  831. I think,

  832. in verse 20,

  833. where two or three

  834. are gathered in my name.

  835. In other words,

  836. it's moving out

  837. of the area

  838. of just looking

  839. at the discipline

  840. of the church

  841. into all kinds

  842. of gatherings,

  843. especially worship

  844. gatherings of the church,

  845. where two or three people

  846. are gathered together

  847. in my name.

  848. I am there

  849. in the midst.

  850. And that word gathered

  851. is very close,

  852. actually,

  853. to another passage

  854. we'll look at,

  855. God willing,

  856. in the course

  857. of these studies,

  858. in Hebrews chapter 10,

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  859. where the writer

  860. to the Hebrews

  861. was aware

  862. that some people

  863. were just drifting away

  864. and falling away

  865. from being gathered together

  866. or didn't want to gather

  867. anymore with God's people.

  868. And he says to them

  869. in terms of their hope

  870. and their faith

  871. and all the rest of it,

  872. don't, he said,

  873. neglect the assembling

  874. of yourselves together

  875. as is the habit of some.

  876. But all the more

  877. as you see

  878. the day approaching,

  879. he means by that

  880. the last day,

  881. the day of Christ's return,

  882. all the more

  883. as you see

  884. that day approaching,

  885. meet together,

  886. gather together,

  887. be together,

  888. share together.

  889. And it's very close,

  890. that word in Hebrews,

  891. to this word gathered here.

  892. It really means gathered

  893. in a sense of worship.

  894. And one thing

  895. we need to remember

  896. is this.

  897. When we gather together

  898. in worship,

  899. we're not just following

  900. a decision

  901. on our own part,

  902. although that's involved in it.

  903. We meet together today

  904. by Christ's appointment.

  905. And that's important.

  906. We meet together

  907. by Christ's own appointment.

  908. Not just that he's foreseen it

  909. or appointment in that sense,

  910. but appointment in the sense

  911. that he wills it.

  912. In fact,

  913. he orders it.

  914. It's a command on his part

  915. to meet together.

  916. And so by Christ's appointment,

  917. that's why he says here,

  918. meet together in my name.

  919. In other words,

  920. we're meeting together

  921. under his authority,

  922. by his leave

  923. and by his express command,

  924. by his appointment,

  925. under his authority

  926. as the Son of God,

  927. the Savior of his church.

  928. And in relation to that,

  929. there's something

  930. very important.

  931. And that's the visibility

  932. of God's church

  933. in this world.

  934. The visibility

  935. of the church

  936. in this world.

  937. We are a visible body

  938. of people,

  939. but we're not visible

  940. if we individualize everything.

  941. Yes,

  942. our individual lives

  943. should show

  944. that we're committed

  945. to God,

  946. that we're committed

  947. to Jesus,

  948. but it's as people

  949. come to see us

  950. gathering together

  951. and as we do so regularly,

  952. as they see us

  953. gathering together,

  954. then that makes

  955. an impression

  956. upon their minds,

  957. doesn't it,

  958. that why are these people

  959. meeting together?

  960. What is it that draws

  961. these people

  962. to be together?

  963. What is it that they

  964. actually have

  965. as they come together

  966. to worship this God

  967. that they claim

  968. is their God?

  969. That's the way

  970. of the world,

  971. but they're seeing,

  972. they're noticing it.

  973. Jesus,

  974. remember in John chapter 13

    John 13 chapter mention

  975. in verse 35,

  976. he says,

  977. by this shall all

  978. people know

  979. that you are

  980. my disciples

  981. if you have love

  982. one for another.

  983. Now,

  984. you can't love

  985. on your own

  986. unless it's love

  987. for yourself.

  988. When he says,

  989. by this shall all men

  990. know that you're

  991. my disciples

  992. if you have love

  993. one for another,

  994. that's love

  995. made visible.

  996. And how is love

  997. made visible?

  998. Well,

  999. especially in God's

  1000. people actually

  1001. coming to gather

  1002. together from time

  1003. to time

  1004. to share together

  1005. in the worship

  1006. of God,

  1007. in the exploration

  1008. of God's word,

1009. in listening to his voice,

  1010. speaking to us

  1011. from the scriptures.

  1012. Yes,

  1013. you can do that

  1014. individually.

  1015. Yes,

  1016. you can do that

  1017. online.

  1018. And I'm not taking

  1019. issue with those

  1020. who simply cannot

  1021. for various reasons

  1022. meet together

  1023. with others.

  1024. That's where

  1025. online services

  1026. are truly appreciated

  1027. and beneficial

  1028. and good.

  1029. But when we can,

  1030. when we don't have

  1031. reasons like that

  1032. not to gather together,

  1033. then the blessings

  1034. of gatherings

  1035. are blessings

  1036. that are noticed

  1037. and make their mark

  1038. to others around us.

1039. By this shall all men

  1040. know that you're

  1041. my disciples

  1042. if you love

  1043. one another.

  1044. And if you love

  1045. one another,

  1046. then you'll love

  1047. to be together

  1048. is really pretty much

  1049. what Jesus is saying.

  1050. And there's a question

  1051. for us today,

  1052. there's a challenge

  1053. for us today,

  1054. here.

  1055. Do we love

  1056. to be here

  1057. on an individual

  1058. basis?

  1059. Is our presence

  1060. here today

  1061. with others

  1062. just on a personal

  1063. sense,

1064. just for what I might

  1065. get out of it

  1066. or what I might

  1067. contribute to it?

  1068. Or do we just

  1069. simply love to be

  1070. with God's

  1071. worshiping people?

  1072. That's how it should

  1073. be, isn't it?

  1074. And I'm sure

  1075. that's the case,

  1076. I'm sure,

  1077. I hope,

  1078. for all of us

  1079. here today.

1080. We love to be here

  1081. because we love

  1082. to be with other

  1083. people who worship

  1084. God.

  1085. We love to be

  1086. with like-minded

  1087. people for whom

  1088. it is so important

  1089. that we gather

  1090. together to worship

  1091. God together.

  1092. For whom it's

  1093. important that the

  1094. world out there

  1095. sees that we do

  1096. love God and that

1097. we love Him to the

  1098. extent that we love

  1099. to worship Him

  1100. together.

  1101. You see,

  1102. all of that's

  1103. behind this emphasis

  1104. on gathering

  1105. together.

  1106. We're gathered

  1107. together today

  1108. by Christ's

  1109. appointment.

  1110. we're gathered

  1111. together in

  1112. His name.

  1113. He's laid the

  1114. responsibility of

  1115. gathering together

  1116. on us.

  1117. And it's not just

  1118. a responsibility.

  1119. I want us really

1120. to think, as we go

  1121. through all of these

  1122. studies, indeed all

  1123. the time, to think

  1124. that yes, it's our

  1125. responsibility by

  1126. Christ's appointment

  1127. to come together, to

  1128. share together in the

  1129. things of worship, but

  1130. it's also our

  1131. privilege.

  1132. privilege.

  1133. It's our privilege.

  1134. Because the nearest

  1135. thing you get to

  1136. heaven is not when

  1137. you're worshiping God

  1138. on your own, great

  1139. though that is, and

  1140. you might have very

  1141. heavenly thoughts and

  1142. heavenly experiences

  1143. from the blessing of

  1144. God while you're on

  1145. your knees, when you're

  1146. reading your Bible, just

  1147. yourself and God.

  1148. But the nearest thing

  1149. to heaven is when

  1150. God's people are

  1151. gathered together to

  1152. worship Him, to

  1153. sing His praises, to

1154. listen to His voice, to

  1155. admire His beauty.

  1156. That's the nearest

  1157. thing to heaven you

  1158. can get in this

  1159. world.

1160. As we sang in the

  1161. psalm, the Lord

  1162. delights in Zion's

  1163. gates and the

  1164. gatherings of His

  1165. people more than

  1166. all the dwellings of

  1167. the individual Jacob.

  1168. And that's why

  1169. today as we come

  1170. together, here is

  1171. one of the great

  1172. privileges we have

  1173. in life, to be

  1174. able to gather

  1175. together willingly and

  1176. under Christ's

  1177. disappointment and by

  1178. Christ's authority to

  1179. come to be here

  1180. together as the

  1181. gathered church in

  1182. worship.

  1183. Secondly, we have the

  1184. reference there to

  1185. Jesus being in the

  1186. midst.

1187. Where two or three are

  1188. gathered in my name,

  1189. there am I among

  1190. them.

  1191. Of course, you know

  1192. that Jesus is God.

  1193. He's the second person

  1194. of the Trinity that

  1195. God is.

  1196. And in that sense,

  1197. Jesus is everywhere,

  1198. just like the

  1199. Father and the

  1200. Holy Spirit.

  1201. The one God is

  1202. everywhere in the

  1203. creation.

  1204. And as they are

  1205. everywhere in the

  1206. creation, so it's

  1207. true of Jesus that

1208. He is as the Son of

  1209. God, as the divine

1210. person He is, and in

  1211. that sense He is

  1212. present more than

  1213. just in one

  1214. locality.

  1215. But this is a

  1216. specific presence

  1217. that's keyed into

  1218. the gatherings of

  1219. God's people, where

  1220. two or three are

  1221. gathered in my name

  1222. there.

  1223. There.

  1224. Wherever that is,

1225. there am I in the

  1226. midst of them.

  1227. I am actually there

  1228. present with them.

  1229. The church on earth

  1230. is God's dwelling

  1231. place.

  1232. The church on earth

  1233. is God's people.

  1234. We sometimes refer to

  1235. this building as the

  1236. church on Kenneth

  1237. Street, the free

  1238. church, and it is

  1239. that.

  1240. But that's not what

1241. the Bible means in the

  1242. highest sense by the

  1243. church.

1244. The church is not a

  1245. building.

  1246. The church in the

  1247. highest sense is the

  1248. people of God, the

  1249. worshiping people of

  1250. God, the people who

  1251. gather together and are

  1252. gathered as the people

1253. of God from time to

  1254. time to worship Him.

  1255. That's the church.

  1256. That's where Jesus

  1257. dwells.

  1258. That's where His

  1259. presence is made

  1260. known.

1261. There am I in the

  1262. midst of them.

  1263. There's a sense in

  1264. which all who are

  1265. God's people, all who

  1266. are saved people of

  1267. God, come to gather

  1268. together with others

  1269. and take Jesus with

  1270. them.

1271. Why do I say that?

  1272. Because the Bible

1273. tells us that when we

  1274. come to trust our

  1275. lives to Christ and

  1276. trust in Christ and

  1277. believe in Him and

1278. look to Him for our

  1279. salvation, we're told

  1280. that the Holy Spirit

1281. comes to live in our

  1282. hearts and our souls.

1283. Now, we can't see that

  1284. physically, but the

  1285. Bible tells us it's a

  1286. truth, it's a fact.

  1287. And therefore, every one

1288. of you today who is in

1289. Christ, every one of you

1290. who lives by faith in

  1291. Christ, everyone here

1292. saved has come to this

  1293. building carrying Jesus

  1294. with you.

  1295. Jesus lives in you.

  1296. And when you come

  1297. together with other

  1298. like-minded people, you

1299. bring Christ with you as

  1300. you come together.

1301. I'm not saying that that

  1302. is a complete definition

1303. of how Christ is present

1304. in the gatherings of His

  1305. people.

  1306. What's really important is

1307. not to be able to

  1308. necessarily understand

  1309. all the various aspects

1310. of that or be able to

  1311. explain all the various

1312. aspects of how can God be

1313. with His people, how does

1314. God live in the hearts

  1315. of His people?

  1316. The important thing that

1317. Jesus is saying is, I am

  1318. there.

  1319. I am there.

1320. It's not to be questioned.

  1321. It's not something that's

1322. spoken of as something in

  1323. the future.

1324. He's not saying where two

1325. or three are gathered in

1326. my name, I will be among

  1327. them.

1328. Or I will come and go from

  1329. amongst them.

  1330. I am there.

  1331. It's a statement of fact.

  1332. The Lord's also, in a sense,

1333. a promise as well, of

  1334. course.

  1335. He promises that that's

1336. what is true when we

  1337. gather together.

  1338. He is there.

  1339. But it's a statement of

1340. fact that that is where

  1341. He is.

1342. And it's actually true here

  1343. and now.

1344. Just pause for a moment.

1345. Think how amazing that is

1346. that God, that Jesus, is in

  1347. this building, in this

  1348. gathering, in these hearts,

1349. that where we are gathered

1350. together today as we are,

  1351. this is a fact.

1352. I am there, He says, in the

  1353. midst.

  1354. And you know, that's

  1355. something that should give

1356. us pause for thought, for

  1357. reflection, for appreciation,

  1358. for thanksgiving.

1359. As we come through these

1360. doors and take our place in

1361. the pew or in this pulpit, it

1362. affects all of us, whether

  1363. we're preaching or listening

  1364. to the gospel.

1365. It should be something that

1366. gives us pause, cause for

1367. thought, and just to pause

1368. for a moment, reflect upon how

1369. this is true always when we

  1370. come together.

1371. How this amazing fact is

1372. actually true as God Himself,

1373. as Jesus Himself says it

1374. truthfully to us, there I am in

  1375. the midst.

1376. There I am in the midst.

1377. And if we haven't thought too

1378. much of that in coming to

1379. church today, think about it

  1380. now.

1381. Think about it as you leave and

1382. as you go back home or

1383. wherever you're going to go.

1384. Think of where you've been and

  1385. that you've been part of a

1386. gathering in Christ's name and

1387. by Christ's authority where He

  1388. was present.

1389. Where He, according to His

1390. promise and His fact, is there.

1391. And you can say to people quite

1392. honestly, quite sincerely, I was

1393. in a gathering today and God was

  1394. there with me.

1395. Jesus was in our midst.

1396. Because that's His own word of

  1397. assurance to us.

1398. Is there anything better than

  1399. that?

1400. Is there anything more privileged

  1401. than that?

1402. Is there anything that you would

  1403. put above that?

1404. Well, John Calvin, that great

1405. reformer whose teachings based on

  1406. the Bible, of course.

1407. The Bible was so important to

  1408. John Calvin.

1409. And in his writings you find his

  1410. emphasis constantly, his

1411. emphasis is, is that what the

  1412. Scripture says?

1413. Is that what the Bible says?

1414. This is what he wrote.

1415. He's talking here about this

1416. promise, where two or three

1417. calls it a promise, there am I

  1418. among them.

1419. He says, therefore, this promise

1420. should stir us up not a little

1421. to grow into a godly and holy

  1422. unity.

1423. For whoever either neglects the

  1424. sacred assemblies or separates

  1425. himself from his brethren

1426. demonstrates by this fact that he

  1427. cares nothing for Christ's

  1428. presence.

1429. Those who desire Christ's presence

1430. will meet together in His name.

1431. Those who desire Christ's presence

1432. will meet together in His name.

1433. In other words, if we today are

1434. thinking, or if people are

1435. thinking, I really want to have

  1436. Christ's presence, but I don't

1437. want to go to church, you see,

  1438. that's an inconsistency.

1439. Calvin is saying, if we really value

  1440. God's presence and Christ's

1441. presence, if we want to have

1442. Christ's presence, if we want to

1443. experience what it's like to be

1444. aware of Christ's presence, then we

1445. we must be, he says, regularly

1446. with the gatherings of God's

  1447. people.

1448. We cannot separate, you see,

1449. things which God has tied together.

1450. And where God has tied together,

1451. meeting in the name of Christ,

1452. with Christ being there, we can't

1453. separate the one from the other.

1454. We can't say, well, I can have

1455. Christ, but I don't need to be in

  1456. church.

1457. I don't need to belong to the

  1458. church.

  1459. church.

1460. That's taking apart what Jesus

  1461. has joined together.

1462. And it's so important for you and

1463. for me always to remember that.

1464. There am I in the midst.

1465. I am there with them.

1466. I am there in their midst when two

1467. or three have gathered in my name.

1468. And you notice the emphasis there on

  1469. two or three.

1470. Where two or three are gathered in

  1471. my name.

1472. He doesn't say two or three dozen.

1473. He doesn't say two or three hundred.

1474. He doesn't say two or three thousand.

1475. He just says two or three.

1476. Supposing there was just myself

1477. preaching the gospel and two others

1478. here in this church today.

1479. This promise, this statement of fact

  1480. would still be true.

1481. That where they meet in his name,

  1482. he is there.

1483. What an encouragement that is to us.

  1484. Not only an encouragement,

  1485. but a stimulus.

1486. Because all of these empty pews that

  1487. are still empty,

1488. we want to see them filled.

1489. Why do we want to see them filled?

1490. Because we want to see people

1491. experience what it is to share

1492. together in the kind of gathering

1493. for worship where Christ guarantees

  1494. his presence.

1495. We want them to come to know Christ.

1496. We want ourselves to experience more

1497. of what it is to grow in the knowledge

  1498. of Jesus.

1499. In our commitment to Jesus.

1500. In experiencing the love of Jesus.

1501. All the things the Bible tells us

1502. are the privileges of God's people.

1503. We come to experience them,

  1504. to sharing them together.

1505. And as the gathered church,

1506. that too is our privilege today.

1507. That even if it's just two or three,

1508. we actually can use that

1509. as a matter before God

1510. that we seek his presence

1511. even as two or three.

1512. Now, please don't misunderstand me.

1513. I think this has been misused

1514. over the years as well.

1515. This emphasis on the twos and the threes.

1516. Because there are places, of course,

1517. where there are very, very small

  1518. gatherings of God's people

  1519. faithfully meeting together today.

1520. And we pray for them

  1521. and we remember them.

1522. Not just in our own country,

  1523. in our islands,

  1524. but throughout the world.

1525. But we mustn't take this verse

  1526. and say,

1527. well, there's just the two or three of us

1528. and that really, that'll do.

  1529. I'm satisfied with that.

1530. Because the promise of God

1531. is it's not about numbers.

  1532. It's not about hundreds

  1533. or thousands

  1534. or dozens

  1535. or whatever.

1536. It's just about the twos and the threes.

1537. As long as two and three

  1538. are faithfully meeting together,

  1539. that's really it.

1540. That's pretty much all we need.

  1541. Is it?

1542. Well, why do we evangelize?

  1543. Why has Jesus said

  1544. that he requires

  1545. that he requires

  1546. his worshiping people,

  1547. his gathered church,

  1548. to be gathered

1549. in a sense as well

  1550. to think about evangelizing,

  1551. thinking about

  1552. how do we actually

  1553. transmit the gospel

  1554. and the privileges

  1555. that we have

  1556. as a gathered church?

  1557. How do we actually

  1558. communicate that

  1559. to the world

  1560. in which we live?

  1561. We go forth

  1562. and we evangelize.

  1563. Luke chapter 14,

    Luke 14:23

  1564. verse 23,

1565. part of that great passage

  1566. that deals with

  1567. the great banquet

  1568. as Jesus described it.

  1569. Invitations given out

1570. to come to the banquet

  1571. were refused.

1572. So then others were invited.

  1573. Some of them refused.

  1574. And then Jesus said,

  1575. well,

1576. go out into the highways

  1577. and hedges

  1578. and compel them

  1579. to come in

  1580. that my house

  1581. may be filled.

  1582. Now, don't

  1583. misunderstand that.

  1584. We don't compel people

  1585. by forcing people.

1586. We're not in the business

  1587. of trying to actually

  1588. force our views

  1589. upon others.

  1590. We're not here

  1591. because we're forced

  1592. to come to church,

  1593. but we're here

  1594. because we're willing

1595. and because we want to come.

  1596. And when God

  1597. makes us willing,

1598. he gives us the mind.

1599. He gives us the mind

  1600. that's made willing

  1601. to come.

1602. And so when Jesus said,

1603. compel them to come in,

  1604. what he meant was

  1605. use every reasonable

  1606. argument you can

1607. to try and persuade people

  1608. to come into

  1609. the gatherings

  1610. of God's people

  1611. so that my house

  1612. may be filled,

  1613. so that my kingdom

  1614. may be filled up.

  1615. And today,

  1616. as we pray

1617. for that world out there,

  1618. for those who don't

  1619. come near a church,

  1620. for those who would,

  1621. if God

  1622. wills it,

  1623. fill these empty pews

  1624. that we'd long

  1625. to see filled,

  1626. well,

1627. he is saying to us

  1628. today,

  1629. well,

  1630. it's your business

1631. as well as the church

  1632. of God.

  1633. As you gather

  1634. from time to time,

  1635. what you share together

  1636. is not just matters

  1637. of worship,

  1638. but how we're going

1639. to actually get out there

  1640. and bring the gospel

1641. to the world around us.

  1642. You share together

  1643. in discussing that

  1644. and thinking about

  1645. how we increasingly

1646. would want to do that.

  1647. And, of course,

  1648. Matthew's gospel

  1649. ends like that,

  1650. doesn't it?

  1651. He talks,

  1652. Jesus says,

  1653. all authority in heaven

  1654. and on earth

1655. has been given to me.

  1656. Therefore,

  1657. go and make disciples

  1658. of all nations.

  1659. You see,

  1660. he didn't say

  1661. go and make

  1662. saved Christians.

  1663. He didn't say

  1664. go and make converts.

  1665. That's God's business.

  1666. What he said was

  1667. go and make disciples.

  1668. Gather people

  1669. under the teaching

  1670. of the Bible,

  1671. under the teaching

  1672. of the Word,

1673. into the worship of God,

  1674. into the gathered church.

  1675. Go and make disciples

  1676. of all nations.

1677. And how did he finish it?

1678. And I am with you

1679. to the end of the age.

  1680. I am with you.

1681. I will be in your midst.

1682. I will be with you.

1683. I will not leave you

1684. as you go about the business.

  1685. of evangelizing

  1686. in his name.

  1687. I was reading a book

  1688. just now by

  1689. another pastor

  1690. from America

  1691. called Tony Marida.

  1692. It's a book

1693. that I'm going to be using

  1694. in some ways

  1695. regarding these studies

  1696. as well.

  1697. But he talks about

  1698. how as a congregation

  1699. or as a church

  1700. in America,

  1701. they were supporting

  1702. a church plant,

  1703. new church,

  1704. in Frankfurt,

  1705. in Germany.

  1706. and the pastor

  1707. of that church

  1708. was a man,

  1709. Stefan Poues.

1710. And he says that Stefan

  1711. one time came over

  1712. to America

  1713. to spend time

  1714. with him,

  1715. with Tony

  1716. and his people

  1717. there in America.

  1718. And on a particular

  1719. Lord's Day,

  1720. he joined

  1721. that congregation

  1722. in worship.

1723. But then he was due

  1724. to leave

  1725. early next morning

  1726. to go back

  1727. to Frankfurt

  1728. in Germany.

  1729. And Tony said,

  1730. I had to apologize

  1731. to him

  1732. because there was

  1733. no time for me.

  1734. I really wanted

  1735. to show him

  1736. something of the city.

1737. I wanted to show him

  1738. some of my favorite

  1739. restaurants

  1740. and eating places

  1741. and other aspects

  1742. of the city

  1743. that were worth

  1744. looking at,

  1745. that people always

  1746. went to see.

  1747. So he apologized

  1748. to Stefan.

  1749. Really sorry

  1750. that it wasn't time

  1751. to do that.

  1752. He would have loved

  1753. to have done that.

  1754. You know what

  1755. Stefan's reply was?

  1756. He said this,

  1757. There's nothing

  1758. greater we could

  1759. have done together

  1760. than we've done.

  1761. There's nothing

  1762. greater that you

  1763. could have shown me.

  1764. I just got to

  1765. worship with the

  1766. saints at your

  1767. church.

  1768. We got to enjoy

  1769. the end for which

  1770. we are created

  1771. together.

  1772. There's nothing

  1773. greater that you

  1774. could do today

  1775. than to be here

  1776. as a worshipping

  1777. gathered people

  1778. of God.

  1779. There's nothing

  1780. greater that I

  1781. could show you.

  1782. Supposing if you

  1783. are a visitor

  1784. today I would

  1785. take you around

  1786. all the sites

  1787. of the island,

  1788. show you all

  1789. these wonderful

  1790. beaches,

  1791. show you all

  1792. these great

  1793. sites of long

  1794. ago,

  1795. all these remnants

  1796. of temples or

  1797. brochs or

  1798. whatever.

  1799. Remember what he

  1800. said,

  1801. There's nothing

  1802. greater that you

  1803. could have done

  1804. for me and to

  1805. have me join you

  1806. in the worship

  1807. of God.

  1808. For where two

  1809. or three are

  1810. gathered in my

  1811. name, there I

  1812. am in the

  1813. midst.

  1814. Let's pray.

  1815. Amen.

  1816. Lord, our

  1817. gracious God,

  1818. we have so

  1819. many privileges

  1820. in gathering

  1821. together as your

  1822. word tells us.

  1823. Forgive us, we

  1824. pray, for the

  1825. times when we

  1826. fail to appreciate

  1827. as we should

  1828. to the extent

  1829. we should, O

  1830. Lord,

  1831. how great our

  1832. privilege is.

  1833. And we pray

  1834. that you would

  1835. help us as we

  1836. value these

  1837. privileges,

  1838. to be all the

  1839. more concerned

  1840. and determined

  1841. to be together

  1842. with your

  1843. people as

  1844. often as we

  1845. can.

  1846. We thank you

  1847. for worship.

  1848. We thank you

  1849. for congregational

  1850. worship.

  1851. We thank you

  1852. for the benefits

  1853. of fellowship

  1854. together,

  1855. for the ways

  1856. in which you

  1857. enable us to

  1858. interact with

  1859. each other,

  1860. so as to

  1861. share the

  1862. experiences of

  1863. life and to

  1864. bring these

  1865. also under

  1866. the teaching

  1867. of your

  1868. word and

  1869. spirit.

  1870. We pray,

  1871. Lord, today

  1872. as we begin

  1873. what we

  1874. anticipate to

  1875. be,

  1876. a series

  1877. of studies

  1878. and your

  1879. word's

  1880. teaching of

  1881. the gathered

  1882. church of

  1883. God.

  1884. O Lord,

  1885. of God,

  1886. help us,

  1887. we pray,

  1888. all the more

  1889. to be visible

  1890. in the world

  1891. and to be

  1892. seen as

  1893. your people

  1894. and to be

  1895. concerned to

  1896. transmit the

  1897. gospel and

  1898. its values and

  1899. its teaching and

  1900. its principles

  1901. to this needy

  1902. world around

  1903. us.

  1904. We pray for

  1905. any today

  1906. who heard

  1907. your word

  1908. and have not

  1909. yet come to

  1910. give their

  1911. life to you,

  1912. to come to

  1913. trust in you,

  1914. come to

  1915. receive you

  1916. as you are

  1917. offered in

  1918. the gospel.

  1919. We ask,

  1920. O Lord,

  1921. that your

  1922. Holy Spirit

  1923. will be active

  1924. amongst us,

  1925. teaching us,

  1926. drawing us,

  1927. bringing us

  1928. more and more

  1929. into that

  1930. living fellowship

  1931. with yourself

  1932. through which

  1933. we know

  1934. we come to

  1935. be saved.

  1936. And so

  1937. continue to

  1938. bless us in

  1939. all our

  1940. activities as

  1941. a congregation.

  1942. We acknowledge,

  1943. Lord,

  1944. we come

  1945. together in

  1946. so many ways,

  1947. not only

  1948. for worship

  1949. but in

  1950. other aspects

  1951. of the

  1952. congregation's

  1953. life.

  1954. And we

  1955. pray your

  1956. blessing today

  1957. to follow all

  1958. that we

  1959. endeavor to

  1960. do in

  1961. your name.

  1962. Be with us

  1963. now as we

  1964. spend time

  1965. in fellowship.

  1966. Blessed to

  1967. us,

  1968. we pray,

  1969. refreshments

  1970. provided for

  1971. us.

  1972. Make us

  1973. thankful also

  1974. that you

  1975. look after

  1976. our bodily

  1977. needs so

  1978. well.

  1979. Hear us,

  1980. we pray,

  1981. and pardon

  1982. our sin

  1983. for Christ's

  1984. sake.

  1985. Amen.

  1986. Well,

  1987. let's

  1988. conclude our

  1989. service this

  1990. morning by

  1991. singing to

  1992. God's praise

  1993. from Psalm

  1994. 27.

  1995. That's on

  1996. page 32.

  1997. Psalm 27,

    Psalms 27:4–6

  1998. verses 4 to

  1999. 6.

  2000. Here is the

  2001. psalmist again

  2002. talking about

  2003. being in

  2004. God's house

  2005. in those

  2006. days in the

  2007. Old Testament

  2008. so that he

  2009. would gaze

  2010. upon the

  2011. beauty of

  2012. the Lord

  2013. as God

  2014. made himself

  2015. known to

  2016. them in

  2017. those times.

  2018. So one

  2019. thing I'll

  2020. plead before

  2021. the Lord,

  2022. and this I'll

  2023. seek always,

  2024. that I may

  2025. come within

  2026. God's house

  2027. and dwell

  2028. there all

  2029. my days,

  2030. that on the

  2031. beauty of

  2032. the Lord

  2033. I constantly

  2034. may gaze

  2035. and in

  2036. his house

  2037. may seek

  2038. to know

  2039. direction

  2040. in his

  2041. ways.

  2042. For in

  2043. his dwelling

  2044. he will

  2045. keep me

  2046. safe in

  2047. troubled

  2048. days.

  2049. Within

  2050. his tent

  2051. he'll

  2052. shelter

  2053. me

  2054. and

  2055. on a

  2056. rock

  2057. me

  2058. raise.

  2059. My head

  2060. will then

  2061. be lifted

  2062. high above

  2063. my enemies

  2064. and in

  2065. his tent

  2066. I'll

  2067. sacrifice

  2068. with

  2069. shouts

  2070. of joy

  2071. and praise.

  2072. And we're

  2073. singing to

  2074. a tune

  2075. Grafenberg

  2076. these

  2077. verses 4 to

  2078. 6.

  2079. one thing

  2080. I'll plead

  2081. before the

  2082. Lord

  2083. and this

  2084. I'll seek

  2085. always

  2086. that I

  2087. may come

  2088. within

  2089. God's

  2090. eyes

  2091. and dwell

  2092. there all

  2093. my days

  2094. that on

  2095. the

  2096. beauty

  2097. of the

  2098. Lord

  2099. I

  2100. constantly

  2101. may gaze

  2102. and in

  2103. his eyes

  2104. may seek

  2105. direction

  2106. in

  2107. his

  2108. ways

  2109. for

  2110. in

  2111. his

  2112. dwelling

  2113. he

  2114. will

  2115. keep

  2116. me

  2117. safe

  2118. and

  2119. troubled

  2120. way

  2121. where

  2122. than

  2123. his

  2124. tent

  2125. he'll

  2126. shelter

  2127. me

  2128. and

  2129. on

  2130. a

  2131. rock

  2132. me

  2133. raise

  2134. my

  2135. head

  2136. will

  2137. then

  2138. be

  2139. lifted

  2140. high

  2141. above

  2142. my

  2143. enemies

  2144. and

  2145. in

  2146. his

  2147. tent

  2148. I'll

  2149. sacrifice

  2150. with

  2151. hearts

  2152. of

  2153. joy

  2154. and

  2155. praise

  2156. if you

2157. allow me to get to the main door please I'll greet you on the way out

2158. now may grace and mercy and peace from God the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit

2159. be your portion now and evermore

  2160. Amen

  2161. thank you

  2162. thank you

  2163. Thank you.
