  1. We're going to begin our worship tonight singing in Psalm 118.

  2. Psalm 118, that's in the Sing Psalms version.

  3. You'll find that on page 155.

  4. We're singing verses 1 to 9.

  5. O thank the Lord, for he is good.

  6. His steadfast love endures always.

  7. Now let the house of Israel say,

  8. His love will last through endless days.

  9. And let the house of Aaron say,

  10. His love forever will endure.

  11. And let those who fear the Lord declare,

  12. His love will stand forever sure.

  13. What a great privilege it is to follow in the line of these ancient people,

  14. long ago in Old Testament times,

  15. who were called by the psalmist here to give thanks to God,

  16. those Jewish people, the house of Aaron,

  17. all those who would gather from time to time to worship the Lord.

  18. And we follow in that great line of worshipers, of God,

  19. the same God they worshiped, that we worship this evening.

  20. So verses 1 to 9 in Psalm 118.

  21. O thank the Lord.

  22. O thank the Lord, for he is good.

  23. O thank the Lord, for his love and europe is proceed.

  24. O bank of the person, our Lord, and king of . You were there.

  25. It'sי when the Holy Spirit is granted.

  26. uarialness, of God.

  27. O've he is good.

  28. God is belt-set teacher.

  29. How must o'er and aurait before the Lord are long efforts God,

  30. Now let the house of Israel say,

  31. His love will last through endless days.

  32. God is proud to serve as many people,

  33. He has堪 Einsatz hace Oh, God is faithful to him or sheep.

  34. And let the house of Edom sing,

  35. His love forever will endure.

  36. Let those who fear the Lord be clear,

  37. His love will stand forever sure.

  38. I cried in language to the Lord,

  39. He answered me and said,

  40. The Lord is with me and not here,

  41. What harm can be the good to Thee?

  42. The Lord is with me constantly,

  43. He is the one who gives me,

  44. I look in triumph on my foes,

  45. I will not eat to Thee, I free.

  46. It's better far to trust the Lord,

  47. Than look for help in man's defense,

  48. It's better far to trust the Lord,

  49. Than in the grace of confidence.

  50. Now we're going to engage in prayer,

  51. let's join together in prayer to the Lord.

  52. Almighty God, as we gather once again in Your presence,

  53. We thank You for these words that have brought us such reassurance,

  54. Words that assure us, Lord, of Your care for Your people,

  55. And words that teach us so clearly,

  56. How much better it is to trust in the Lord,

  57. Than to trust in anyone else.

  58. And we bless You for the way that that trust that You give us to place in Yourself,

  59. Is a trust that is placed in one who is always faithful,

  60. One who will never be diverted from His purpose,

  61. One who is always true to His promises,

  62. One who will bring all things to fruition in the experience of Your people.

  63. And we thank You, Lord, tonight for the rule that You have over us,

  64. And over the world in which we live,

  65. Despite the fact that there are so many things that we cannot understand,

  66. So many things that cause us to question,

  67. Even at times to be bewildered,

  68. So many things that we find taken up by those throughout the world,

  69. Who would seek to constantly find fault with the idea of God.

  70. We give thanks, Gracious One,

  71. That You assure us through Your Word,

  72. That You, in the way in which Your throne is set,

  73. Are the Lord above all things.

  74. And this gives us, Lord, confidence to draw near to You even tonight,

  75. And to do so as a body of Your people,

  76. Who come here to worship You.

  77. And we give thanks, O Lord,

  78. That Your worthiness to be worshipped is so perfect.

  79. Everything that You do is worthy of our praise and our adoration.

  80. And we ask, O Lord, as we come before You,

  81. Even at this time to pray,

  82. That You would enable us to come and give thanks, first of all.

  83. Enable us to adore You, to love You,

  84. Even before we ask anything for ourselves,

  85. Or anything to be done for us by You.

  86. Enable us, Lord, to dwell upon the great fact of Your beauty and Your constancy,

  87. Your constancy, of Your worthiness to be praised.

  88. And so we ask Your blessing,

  89. As we come together once again in this way.

  90. We ask Your blessing, Lord, upon Your Word for us.

  91. As we give thanks for Your Word,

  92. As we give thanks for the number of ways in which we use it,

  93. Even throughout a service like this.

  94. We pray, O Lord, that You would once again bless Your Word to us.

  95. As we come before You,

  96. Stretching out our hands to You, O Lord,

  97. And acknowledgement that we of ourselves are empty,

  98. Empty of resources and empty of ability to please You,

  99. And to bring understanding to Your Word.

  100. But we thank You that You have promised to give us that understanding.

  101. And we read in Your Word, Lord,

  102. Of those whose minds You opened,

  103. As You opened the Scriptures to them.

  104. And we pray that that will be our experience even tonight.

  105. And we can never say, O Lord,

  106. That our knowledge of You is as full as we would like it to be.

  107. And we can never say that we've reached the point where we need to now cease to learn,

  108. Cease to come to have more knowledge imparted to us from Your Spirit and from Your Word.

  109. And so we pray that You would help us even tonight to make a further contribution by Your grace,

  110. To make ourselves in Your presence to grow in grace and in the knowledge of You as our Lord.

  111. Lord, we bring our personal concerns to You as well.

  112. And although we have such a privilege of meeting together,

  113. A privilege of belonging to You as the gathered church of God,

  114. Nevertheless, Lord, we come with our individual concerns as well.

  115. We thank You that in the midst of the gatherings of Your people,

  116. You take note of individuals and individual circumstances.

  117. Lord, we give thanks that You take note of all the detail of the lives of Your people,

  118. That You are not beyond looking upon us in such a way as to draw near to us,

  119. To assure us in a personal way that we can safely trust in You.

  120. And we pray that You would speak to us personally, Lord, this evening.

  121. And we pray that You would do so no matter what others may feel,

  122. What others may experience,

  123. And what others may be in regard to their own relationship with You.

  124. Help us, we pray, each one, and help us all together

  125. To seek You in a way that would further our acquaintance with You,

  126. And our experience of You as our Lord and as our God.

  127. We bring before You too, O Lord, our needs as a congregation.

  128. We thank You for the way that You continue to provide for us,

  129. For the way in which we can say, O Lord, that You have helped us thus far on our journey through life.

  130. You have helped us in our history as a congregation and as a church.

  131. And we pray, gracious Lord, that You would grant Your blessing,

  132. That we may further have that blessing imparted to us as each week goes by.

  133. And we pray that You would grant Your blessing to extend into our homes,

  134. Our families, our children, our grandchildren, our relatives, our neighbors.

  135. O Lord, we pray for our communities.

  136. We pray for our island.

  137. We pray for all who no longer come to church.

  138. We pray for those who have never come to church.

  139. We pray for those, Lord, who are not concerned about being along with the worshiping people of God.

  140. We pray for those whose hearts are closed to the message of the gospel.

  141. We pray that You would bless them.

  142. We pray that You would give to them what You have given to ourselves.

  143. That desire after You, that desire to know You,

  144. That desire, O Lord, that comes out of a knowledge of ourselves,

  145. That we need You, a knowledge of ourselves that we cannot organize and create for ourselves in life.

  146. Those things that will be a sure foundation for us.

  147. Remember us, we pray, Lord, in all the different ways in which we seek to serve You,

  148. And be pleased to accompany all that we do in Your name,

  149. With Your blessing and with further evidence of Your delight in us.

  150. We ask that You would forgive our sins.

  151. Every time, Lord, we come together in this way,

  152. Each of us is surely aware that we come with our own sins,

  153. With our own confession,

  154. With our own need to divulge to You,

  155. Although You know already that we need Your pardon, Your cleansing, Your acceptance of us.

  156. Lord, our God, we ask as we confess our sins,

  157. That as You are faithful and just to forgive us our sins,

  158. And to cleanse us from all unrighteousness,

  159. That we may know in You that blessing this evening,

  160. And that we may be assured that when our sin is forgiven,

  161. It is truly forgiven permanently.

  162. And even though we come on a regular basis to confess our sin,

  163. Lord, we take delight in the fact that in and through the Lord Jesus Christ,

  164. You come to blot out the transgressions of Your people,

  165. You come to wipe clean the record of debt,

  166. The record of guilt that is on our record,

  167. And You replace it with Your righteousness,

  168. With Your acceptance of Your people,

  169. And with the fact that You see them as righteous in Your Son.

  170. Oh, gracious Lord, help us to give all the more thanks to You

  171. For the reality of these things.

  172. We ask Your blessing to be tonight with those who are ill.

  173. We know those of our number, Lord, as a congregation

  174. Of whom we've heard in recent days of illness.

  175. We pray that You draw near to each and every one,

  176. And every home thereby affected.

  177. Remember those in hospital, those in the hospice,

  178. Those, Lord, who are in care homes throughout our island.

  179. We pray that You bless them and bless to them the care that they receive.

  180. Remember those who mourn the passing of loved ones.

  181. Gracious One, be near to them to comfort them.

  182. And be near to those throughout the world tonight

  183. Where the pain and the sorrow of death is so evident.

  184. And particularly tonight, we remember, oh Lord,

  185. Those in Morocco and Marrakesh and the surrounding district

  186. Whose lives have been devastated by an earthquake

  187. With such great loss of property and of life.

  188. Lord, we pray that You would provide for them

  189. And that the agencies that seek to come to their aid

  190. Will know of Your own provision and Your blessing for them.

  191. And we ask especially, oh Lord, that You would grant to provide for them

  192. An understanding and a peace that comes from knowing Yourself.

  193. And we pray that You would help them, Lord, as they cry out in their agony.

  194. That You would help them and hear their cry

  195. And come to do for them more than we are able to ask or even think.

  196. Bless us then now, we pray.

  197. Here we come to You, Lord, to seek that we will hear Your voice speaking to us from the Scriptures.

  198. And we pray for the grace to hear

  199. And to hear in such a way that recognizes that the Lord is indeed addressing us.

  200. Hear us, we pray, in Jesus' name. Amen.

  201. Once again, let's praise the Lord.

  202. We're singing this time in Psalm 91.

  203. Psalm 91 in the Scottish Psalter.

  204. That's page 351, verses 1 to 4.

  205. Words that remind us of the refuge that God is for all who trust in Him.

  206. How He provides for us security and safety in that refuge

  207. Against all that would seek to take us away from the Lord Himself and cause us distress.

  208. He that doth in the secret place of the Most High reside

  209. Under the shade of him that is the Almighty shall abide

  210. I of the Lord my God will say,

  211. He is my refuge still.

  212. He is my fortress and my God.

  213. And in Him trust I will.

  214. As somebody once said,

  215. We can never run away from God to hide from Him.

  216. He always sees us.

  217. But we can run into Him and find our hiding place and our refuge in Himself.

  218. And that's what faith actually does.

  219. It draws us into the refuge that God Himself is.

  220. So let's sing these verses 1 to 4.

  221. He that doth in the secret place.

  222. Of the Most High reside

  223. He that doth in the secret place.

  224. Of the Most High reside.

  225. He that doth in the secret place.

  226. And that of the Most High reside.

  227. the shape of him that is

  228. the almighty shall abide.

  229. I hope the Lord my God will sing.

  230. He is my refuge still.

  231. He is my fortress, my God,

  232. and in him trust I will.

  233. Assuredly he shall be saved,

  234. and give deliverance from subtle flowers,

  235. make and grow the noise of his to ends.

  236. His feathers shall be high, I trust,

  237. under his wings shall be.

  238. His faithfulness shall be a shield,

  239. and offer unto thee.

  240. Well, as you can see from the notes of the service,

  241. we have two readings tonight from the Scriptures

  242. from the New Testament.

  243. First in Mark chapter 15, verses 33 to 41.

    Mark 15:33–41

  244. Now we are going to read a passage also from Hebrews chapter 10, verses 19 to 25.

    Hebrews 10:19–25

  245. First to the Gospel according to Mark, chapter 15,

    Mark 15 chapter mention

  246. and beginning reading at verse 33.

  247. We read about the death of Jesus on the cross.

  248. And when the sixth hour had come,

  249. there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.

  250. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice,

  251. Eloi, Eloi lama sabachthani,

  252. which means,

  253. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

  254. And some of the bystanders hearing it said,

  255. Behold, he is calling Elijah.

  256. And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine,

  257. and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink,

  258. saying, Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.

  259. And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last.

  260. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two from the top to bottom.

  261. And when the centurion who stood facing him saw that in this way he breathed his last,

  262. he said, Truly, this man was the Son of God.

  263. And if you take with you especially that reference in verse 38 to what happened to the curtain in the temple to our second reading in Hebrews chapter 10.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  264. We can read from verse 19.

  265. Amen.

  266. Amen.

  267. Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus,

  268. by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain that is through his flesh,

  269. and since we have a great high priest over the house of God,

  270. let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith,

  271. with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience,

  272. and our bodies washed with pure water.

  273. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering,

  274. for he who promised is faithful.

  275. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and to good works,

  276. not neglecting to meet together as is the habit of some,

  277. but encouraging one another,

  278. and all the more as you see the day drawing near."

  279. And you can see there the connection between the two passages

  280. where the curtain that separated the holy place from the most holy place at the death of Jesus was torn in two,

  281. and it was from the top to the bottom.

  282. It wasn't done from below by someone.

  283. It was a divine act.

  284. And that symbolized and represented how access to God was now above that of the Old Testament,

  285. as we read here in this passage in Hebrews that we'll come back to,

  286. that we are able to enter in by a new and living way,

  287. and that is, of course, Jesus himself, to draw near to God through him.

  288. So may he bless to us his word to his own praise.

  289. We're going to sing again Psalm 34 this time.

  290. Psalm number 34, that's on page 40,

  291. singing verses 1 to 9.

  292. Psalm 34, that's on page 40.

  293. At all times I will bless the Lord.

  294. I'll praise him with my voice.

  295. Because I glory in the Lord, let troubled souls rejoice.

  296. Together let us praise the Lord, exalt his name with me.

  297. I sought the Lord, his answer came.

  298. From fears he set me free.

  299. They look to him and shine with joy.

  300. They are not put to shame.

  301. This suffering man cried to the Lord.

  302. From him deliverance came.

  303. The angel of the Lord surrounds and guards continually

  304. all those who fear and honor him.

  305. He sets his people free.

  306. Come, taste and see.

  307. The Lord is good.

  308. Who trusts in him is blessed.

  309. Oh, fear the Lord, you saints.

  310. With need you will not be oppressed.

  311. These verses from the beginning.

  312. At all times I will praise the Lord.

  313. I will bless the Lord.

  314. Amen.

  315. At all times I will bless the Lord.

  316. I'll praise him with my voice.

  317. Because I glory in the Lord, let troubled souls rejoice.

  318. Together let us praise the Lord, exalt his name with me.

  319. I sought the Lord, his answer came.

  320. From fears he set me free.

  321. They look to him and shine with joy.

  322. They are not good to shame.

  323. This suffering man cried to the Lord.

  324. From him deliverance came.

  325. The angel of the Lord surrounds and guards continually.

  326. He sets his people free.

  327. Zeus come to god's promise.

  328. From his childrenitzer parий로 all the good souls,

  344. Now, please turn with me to Hebrews chapter 10.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  345. Hebrews chapter 10, that passage we read from verse 19 to 25.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  346. We're going to focus on that for a short time this evening.

  347. Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus,

  348. by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is through his flesh.

  349. And since we have a great high priest over the house of God,

  350. let us draw near with a true heart, in full assurance of faith, and so on.

  351. Three great exhortations there, beginning with let us, in these verses from verse 22 onwards.

  352. Let us draw near, let us hold fast, let us consider.

  353. Now, last week we began, last Sunday morning, we began a short study, or series of studies,

  354. on the gathered church.

  355. We took that from Matthew 18, and I did say at that time that I was going to do this,

  356. whether it be in the morning or the evening, we're going to follow this theme for a few weeks.

  357. As we look at the Bible's teaching on the gathered church, the church gathered together,

  358. especially in a focus on the worshiping church of God.

  359. And we saw last time that it was where two or three have been gathered together in his name,

  360. that he is there in the midst.

  361. And we focused on gathered in the name of Jesus,

  362. and we focused also on the second point, that Jesus is actually in the midst of his people,

  363. that he is in their hearts.

  364. And so in that sense, they carry Jesus with them as they come together.

  365. He is individually, he is in each individual life that he occupies, that lives by faith in him.

  366. And when we come together, we also bring that presence of Jesus in our hearts with us.

  367. Not to say that that's the only way in which Jesus is present in the gatherings of his people.

  368. But tonight, as we look at this passage,

  369. we can see that specific reference in verse 25 to being gathered together.

  370. He says there,

  371. Let's consider how to stood one another up to love and good works,

  372. not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another.

  373. And you can see the balance in that verse.

  374. That is, on the one hand, he's saying,

  375. Let's not neglect to meet together.

  376. And the opposite of that, the other side of it is,

  377. Instead of neglecting to meet together, let's encourage one another.

  378. So obviously that means meet together in order to encourage one another.

  379. It's not just a matter of coming together to worship the Lord.

  380. That is the primary exercise of our gathering together as worshiping people,

  381. as a worshiping congregation.

  382. But here is another dimension to it as well.

  383. We gather together in such a way that seeks to encourage one another,

  384. through gathering together under the Word of God,

  385. and in fellowship, spiritual fellowship with one another.

  386. So we have the opportunities there,

  387. and the privilege of encouraging one another as well.

  388. Now we need to keep this passage, these verses,

  389. we need to keep them bound together as they are here in the passage before us.

  390. Because the three exhortations, as we said there,

  391. these three letters sentences, verses 22 to 25,

  392. these are actually set on a foundation, if you like,

  393. and the foundation is what goes before that.

  394. The gathering, the exhortations that are addressed to us as we gather together,

  395. they all stem from what we're told already in verses 19 to 21.

  396. Having certain things already in place.

  397. Having certain facts that we can rely upon.

  398. The facts especially about Jesus himself,

  399. and about the death of Jesus,

  400. and about the way that he's opened up for us through his death,

  401. into the presence of God.

  402. These great facts, he says there,

  403. are what leads them then to the exhortations.

  404. Having these in place, he's saying,

  405. let us now do this.

  406. In other words, we're reminding ourselves,

  407. and this is reminding us anyway,

  408. that when we gather together to worship God,

  409. we gather together in response to what God has already done.

  410. We don't come to gather together in worship

  411. as if God would then do something in return,

  412. or repay us for the fact.

  413. There may be some aspects of truth to that, of course, as well.

  414. But this is the great fact.

  415. This is the great fact.

  416. God has already done this for us.

  417. God has been active in Jesus Christ,

  418. providing us with this access into his own presence.

  419. It's a new and it's a living way.

  420. And we have boldness, confidence to enter the holy places

  421. by the blood of Jesus,

  422. by this new and living way that he's opened through his flesh,

  423. through his death on the cross,

  424. and his own person.

  425. When we come,

  426. as we're gathered tonight in worship,

  427. what we're doing is gathering together

  428. in response to something that's already taken place.

  429. We're not doing something that will give cause to God to bless us.

  430. He is freely able to bless us in any case or not.

  431. But we're coming together in response to,

  432. in believing response,

  433. in worshiping response to what he has already done

  434. and what he has done conclusively

  435. by the death of Jesus on the cross.

  436. And that's such an important aspect

  437. of thinking of the church gathered together,

  438. the gatherings of the church,

  439. the gatherings of the church,

  440. especially for worship,

  441. public worship,

  442. as we're doing this evening

  443. and every other time we come.

  444. We come because this has already happened.

  445. And this is actually something that requires of us

  446. that we respond to that

  447. by coming together

  448. and coming to God through this new and living way

  449. that Jesus himself is.

  450. We could say a lot more than that,

  451. but you will notice the plurals that he's using.

  452. We saw this last time,

  453. the importance of noticing the plurals in the Bible

  454. the plurals by which God addresses his people,

  455. whether it's here on the Old Testament,

  456. these New Testament epistles,

  457. Hebrews,

  458. those of Paul,

  459. those of John,

  460. all of these have the same feature,

  461. that they address the people of God as a people.

  462. Of course,

  463. as we said last time,

  464. that means addressing us as individuals as well.

  465. Everything here is addressed to you

  466. and to me in an individual sense.

  467. We have to make individual use of it.

  468. But nevertheless,

  469. primarily,

  470. it's an address to us as a gathered people.

  471. Let us draw near.

  472. Let us hold fast

  473. the confidence of our,

  474. the confession of our hope.

  475. Let us consider

  476. how to stir one another up to love

  477. and to good works.

  478. They're plurals.

  479. They're addressed to a people.

  480. They're addressed to a gathered church of God.

  481. And that's important for us also

  482. as you go through the various aspects

  483. of what we are privileged to have

  484. as Christians and as believing people.

  485. We're privileged to have,

  486. yes,

  487. individually,

  488. but especially together.

  489. Together in such a way as worships him

  490. in response to what he has done.

  491. So let's look at these three exhortations briefly.

  492. The first of these,

  493. you'll find is,

  494. let us draw near.

  495. Let us draw near

  496. with a true heart

  497. in full assurance of faith,

  498. with our hearts sprinkled clean

  499. from an evil conscience

  500. and our bodies washed

  501. with pure water.

  502. Now this passage has a lot in it

  503. that we're not going to go into

  504. in any detail

  505. because as I said,

  506. it's important

  507. that we keep it all together

  508. and get the main parameters of it

  509. worked out

  510. in our understanding

  511. and then put that to ourselves.

  512. And what he's doing here is saying,

  513. here is what we're doing

  514. in response to what God has done in Christ.

  515. We're coming together

  516. to draw near to God.

  517. That's what you're doing this evening

  518. if you've come here

  519. with a mindset

  520. upon worshiping him

  521. with everybody else

  522. who's come here tonight

  523. to worship the Lord.

  524. You are drawing near to God

  525. and of course you can do that

  526. and you do that

  527. in an individual sense as well.

  528. When you go on your knees

  529. or when you pray to God,

  530. however it is,

  531. your posture is to pray to God.

  532. You're drawing near to God.

  533. When you sing in praise to God

  534. on your own,

  535. you're drawing near to God.

  536. You're conscious

  537. that you're drawing near

  538. to this God you're worshiping.

  539. And it's a wonderful privilege,

  540. more so than in an individual sense,

  541. to come together

  542. to worship the Lord

  543. means together we're coming

  544. to draw near to him.

  545. We're coming into his presence.

  546. We're coming through this new

  547. and living way

  548. into the very presence of God.

  549. We don't need any other warrant

  550. to come than what's already

  551. been done for us

  552. and his own invitation

  553. and exhortation based upon that.

  554. Let us draw near to him.

  555. Are we conscious tonight

  556. that this is what we're doing?

  557. Is that not our mindset

  558. as we come through these doors

  559. to gather together

  560. in this place of worship

  561. that we are actually intending

  562. and seeking to draw near to God?

  563. That we look at what worship is

  564. in all the various aspects of it,

  565. but it's primarily

  566. a drawing near to God

  567. through Christ,

  568. through this new and living way.

  569. And he says here,

  570. we're drawing near

  571. with a true heart

  572. and a true heart

  573. in full assurance of faith.

  574. Well, a true heart really there

  575. is something that means

  576. just opposite to hypocrisy.

  577. We're coming with a genuine sincerity

  578. in our hearts to worship God.

  579. Our worship is never perfect

  580. as it leaves ourselves.

  581. Our minds at worship

  582. are not perfectly attuned

  583. to listening to God

  584. or to speaking from the pulpit

  585. about God.

  586. We're still sinners.

  587. We're failing in so many aspects

  588. of what we do,

  589. even in our worship.

  590. But here he's saying

  591. we're coming with a sincere heart.

  592. Your being here tonight

  593. at this service of worship

  594. is something that you can say

  595. of yourself,

  596. I want to be there.

  597. I'm sincere about my desire

  598. to worship God.

  599. I'm not drawing near to him

  600. just as a matter of form,

  601. just in terms of a formality,

  602. just doing something outwardly.

  603. I'm coming before him

  604. with a sincere heart.

  605. I'm not coming to him

  606. in pretense.

  607. I'm not pretending

  608. to be something

  609. that I'm not.

  610. I'm coming

  611. with a sincere heart.

  612. And you see,

  613. he's putting it in the plural,

  614. let us draw near

  615. with a sincere,

  616. with a sincere,

  617. with a true heart.

  618. Let us draw near

  619. with a true heart.

  620. And then he says

  621. in full assurance of faith.

  622. Another aspect of

  623. the drawing near,

  624. of the coming together,

  625. that we come

  626. in full assurance of faith.

  627. Now that sometimes

  628. troubles people.

  629. And it used to trouble myself

  630. until I came across

  631. a meaning given to it

  632. that really helped me out

  633. because every time

  634. I thought of this

  635. in full assurance of faith

  636. coming near to God,

  637. I thought,

  638. well, I'm failing there

  639. because my faith

  640. is sometimes so poor.

  641. My faith is sometimes

  642. so weak.

  643. I wish I had

  644. a stronger faith.

  645. And if I had

  646. a stronger faith,

  647. I would fit into

  648. the category

  649. of what this writer

  650. is saying,

  651. drawing near to God

  652. with a full assurance

  653. of faith.

  654. But then you see,

  655. that's not what

  656. this phrase means.

  657. It doesn't mean

  658. drawing near to God

  659. fully persuaded

  660. that you are saved

  661. or having that

  662. full assurance

  663. that yes,

  664. you are saved,

  665. you are a believer,

  666. you are indeed

  667. trusting in Christ.

  668. Let me read to you

  669. what that great

  670. Puritan theologian

  671. John Owen says

  672. in his commentary

  673. on Hebrews

  674. about this phrase.

  675. Obviously,

  676. he met in his own day

  677. with people

  678. who thought that

  679. this full assurance

  680. of faith meant

  681. reaching a very height

  682. of assurance

  683. that you are a believer.

  684. This is what he says.

  685. The full assurance

  686. of faith here

  687. represents

  688. not the assurance

  689. that any have

  690. of their own salvation,

  691. nor any degree

  692. of such an assurance.

  693. It is only

  694. the full satisfaction

  695. of our souls

  696. in the reality

  697. and efficacy

  698. of the priesthood

  699. of Christ

  700. to give us

  701. acceptance with God

  702. in contrast

  703. to all other ways

  704. and means thereof.

  705. And that really

  706. is saying to it

  707. full assurance

  708. of faith,

  709. Owen is saying,

  710. means you are

  711. fully persuaded

  712. that Jesus

  713. is everything

  714. you need

  715. in order to have

  716. that full acceptance

  717. of God.

  718. That everything

  719. you require

  720. in order to

  721. have a life

  722. that God

  723. himself receives

  724. and takes delight

  725. in and accepts

  726. as righteous

  727. in his sight,

  728. that's all

  729. in Jesus.

  730. And the full assurance

  731. of faith,

  732. as Owen said,

  733. is the full satisfaction

  734. of our souls

  735. in the reality

  736. and efficacy

  737. of the priesthood

  738. of Christ

  739. to give us

  740. that acceptance

  741. with God.

  742. So if you're

  743. coming tonight

  744. and saying,

  745. I know that

  746. I don't have anything

  747. in myself

  748. and my own ability

  749. that I can create

  750. in order to give me

  751. acceptance with God.

  752. I know I can't

  753. come to God

  754. and draw near to God

  755. with his people

  756. to worship him

  757. thinking that somehow

  758. my sincerity,

  759. although I'm sincere,

  760. that my sincerity

  761. is something

  762. that will guarantee

  763. me acceptance

  764. before God.

  765. I can't come

  766. before him

  767. and say,

  768. Lord,

  769. I prayed today

  770. and I prayed

  771. a number of times

  772. today

  773. and I'm pleased

  774. that I was able

  775. to pray

  776. and on the basis

  777. of that

  778. I'm persuaded

  779. that you'll accept me.

  780. You can't come

  781. with that.

  782. Great and wonderful

  783. though prayer is.

  784. No,

  785. you come

  786. to draw near

  787. to God.

  788. We come to draw near

  789. together

  790. as we come

  791. to draw near

  792. to God

  793. and we're saying

  794. this,

  795. Lord,

  796. I have everything

  797. I need

  798. for your acceptance

  799. and I accept

  800. this as being

  801. perfectly sufficient

  802. for me

  803. that Jesus

  804. in his death

  805. is everything

  806. and all I need.

  807. You're saying

  808. that tonight.

  809. Then you have

  810. that full assurance

  811. of faith.

  812. You're saying

  813. that you discount

  814. every other possibility

  815. of something

  816. of every other

  817. means that you

  818. may think of

  819. would give you

  820. acceptance with God

  821. and you're saying

  822. no,

  823. Lord,

  824. I don't want

  825. to trust

  826. in any of these.

  827. I know I mustn't

  828. do that.

  829. It's not going

  830. to bring me

  831. acceptance with you

  832. at all

  833. but here is

  834. my acceptance.

  835. Here is my

  836. ground of confidence.

  837. Here is Jesus.

  838. I believe in him.

  839. I trust in him.

  840. I trust myself

  841. to him.

  842. I put myself

  843. in his hands

  844. and at his disposal.

  845. I receive him

  846. as my righteous

  847. savior.

  848. I receive him

  849. as Lord

  850. your provision

  851. for a poor

  852. sinner like me.

  853. I receive him

  854. gladly.

  855. I receive him

  856. with relief

  857. for my soul

  858. because I am

  859. persuaded

  860. by your word

  861. that that gives me

  862. acceptance

  863. in your sight.

  864. let us draw

  865. near

  866. let us draw

  867. near

  868. with a true

  869. heart

  870. and in the full

  871. assurance of faith

  872. with our hearts

  873. sprinkled clean

  874. from an evil

  875. conscience

  876. and our bodies

  877. washed with pure

  878. water.

  879. well in a word

  880. that really just

  881. indicates the

  882. totality

  883. with which God

  884. saves us

  885. and brings us

  886. into acceptance

  887. with himself.

  888. We need

  889. a clean

  890. conscience.

  891. We need a conscience

  892. that's sprinkled

  893. clean from an evil

  894. conscience.

  895. We need outwardly

  896. as well in our

  897. behavior

  898. to have our bodies

  899. washed with pure

  900. water.

  901. A spiritual way

  902. of stating that

  903. our entire

  904. person

  905. needs to be made

  906. acceptable with God

  907. and that's what Jesus

  908. does.

  909. That's what faith

  910. in Jesus brings.

  911. Not that faith

  912. is meritorious.

  913. It's Jesus himself

  914. who has

  915. the merit

  916. and through that

  917. we receive

  918. this acceptance

  919. with God

  920. this

  921. sprinkling

  922. of our conscience

  923. from

  924. our hearts

  925. sprinkled clean

  926. from an evil

  927. conscience.

  928. A conscience

  929. that you want

  930. to always pronounce

  931. that you are

  932. right with God.

  933. Of course

  934. your conscience

  935. even as a believer

  936. convicts you

  937. when you know

  938. you've done wrong

  939. or when you know

  940. you haven't done

  941. something you ought

  942. to have done.

  943. That's perfectly

  944. alright

  945. in the sense

  946. that I mean

  947. it's perfectly

  948. alright in the

  949. sense that

  950. it shows you

  951. and indicates

  952. there's something

  953. there in you

  954. that really is

  955. keeping you

  956. in the right

  957. direction

  958. and that you're

  959. relying upon

  960. Christ himself

  961. for your acceptance

  962. with God

  963. and not anything

  964. in yourself.

  965. Let us draw near

  966. let us draw near

  967. he says

  968. with a true heart

  969. and in full

  970. assurance of faith

  971. with our hearts

  972. sprinkled clean

  973. from an evil

  974. conscience

  975. and our bodies

  976. washed

  977. with pure water.

  978. But then he goes

  979. on

  980. with another

  981. exhortation

  982. let us hold

  983. fast

  984. the confession

  985. of our hope

  986. without wavering

  987. for he who promised

  988. is faithful.

  989. Now notice he's saying

  990. it's the confession

  991. of our hope

  992. rather than confession

  993. of faith

  994. which we very often

  995. come across

  996. this is the confession

  997. of our hope.

  998. What does Jesus do?

  999. What does God do

  1000. when he brings us

  1001. and saves us

  1002. and puts us

  1003. in Christ

  1004. and brings to us

  1005. that salvation

  1006. that becomes ours

  1007. then through faith

  1008. in Christ

  1009. what is he doing?

  1010. He's giving us hope.

  1011. Remember how Paul

  1012. when he wrote

  1013. to the Ephesians

  1014. in chapter 2

  1015. he described

  1016. what the Ephesians

  1017. once were

  1018. when they were

  1019. unsaved

  1020. heathen

  1021. pagans

  1022. in all their idolatry

  1023. before the Lord

  1024. sent the gospel

  1025. to them

  1026. and they came

  1027. to be saved

  1028. through the gospel

  1029. through the preaching

  1030. of the gospel

  1031. you were

  1032. he says

  1033. at that time

  1034. cut off

  1035. from the commonwealth

  1036. of Israel

  1037. without God

  1038. and without hope

  1039. in the world.

  1040. One thing

  1041. that characterizes

  1042. the unsaved sinner

  1043. is the absence

  1044. of hope

  1045. because hope

  1046. in the biblical

  1047. sense of it

  1048. is not somehow

  1049. hoping that things

  1050. will improve.

  1051. That's a worldly hope.

  1052. That's a hope

  1053. really without any

  1054. foundation

  1055. even though it might

1056. be good to some extent

  1057. to have a hope

  1058. that something

  1059. will happen

  1060. to improve

  1061. one's life

  1062. but when you're

  1063. thinking of this hope

  1064. the hope

  1065. that you have

  1066. through Christ

  1067. and through faith

  1068. in Christ

  1069. the confession

  1070. of hope

  1071. that's mentioned

  1072. here is the hope

  1073. that's founded

  1074. upon Christ's

  1075. own resurrection

  1076. from the dead

  1077. especially

  1078. when you come

  1079. to receive Christ

  1080. you come to receive

  1081. not just

  1082. the Christ

  1083. who died

  1084. but the Christ

  1085. who is now alive

  1086. who is risen

  1087. from the dead

  1088. and is alive

  1089. forevermore

  1090. and it's there

  1091. that you find hope.

  1092. You know

  1093. we're so used

  1094. to being

  1095. at funeral services

  1096. here in this

  1097. congregation

  1098. in our community

  1099. we have

  1100. so many times

  1101. gathered with

  1102. families

  1103. who have lost

  1104. loved ones

  1105. and that's part

  1106. of life

  1107. in this world

  1108. as long as

  1109. this world

  1110. continues

  1111. and one of the

  1112. things that's

  1113. really so sad

  1114. to see

  1115. so desperately

  1116. sad to see

  1117. is that

  1118. people come to die

  1119. who've not

  1120. expressed any

  1121. confession of hope

  1122. while they lived

  1123. who didn't have

  1124. that trust in Christ

  1125. who couldn't

  1126. confess

  1127. I have a hope

  1128. that's now

  1129. firmly based

  1130. upon the

  1131. resurrection

  1132. of Jesus

  1133. from the dead

  1134. and therefore

  1135. God assures me

  1136. that that hope

  1137. will be fulfilled

  1138. and that I will

  1139. share in the

  1140. triumph of Jesus

  1141. over death.

  1142. That's what you

  1143. want tonight

  1144. to have

  1145. as a characteristic

  1146. of your life

  1147. to have that hope

  1148. that the Bible

  1149. speaks of

1150. the hope of the gospel

  1151. the hope that comes

  1152. through Jesus Christ

  1153. put away every kind

  1154. of hope

  1155. other than that

  1156. because hoping

  1157. for the best

  1158. is just

  1159. vain hope

  1160. it's not

  1161. necessarily worth

  1162. anything at all

1163. when you come to hope

  1164. and have hope

  1165. in Jesus

  1166. that hope

  1167. is based

  1168. on Christ's

  1169. resurrection

  1170. it's a hope

  1171. that looks to

  1172. the promises

  1173. of God

  1174. that they will

  1175. fulfill

  1176. they will be

  1177. fulfilled

  1178. because notice

  1179. what he's saying

  1180. let's hold fast

  1181. the confession

  1182. of our hope

  1183. without wavering

  1184. for he who promised

  1185. is faithful

  1186. why am I sure

  1187. tonight

  1188. that the hope

  1189. I have

  1190. of resurrection

  1191. life

  1192. of life

  1193. in heaven

  1194. through faith

  1195. in Christ

  1196. through my coming

  1197. to give myself

  1198. in response

  1199. to his love

  1200. to be ruled

  1201. by him

  1202. to be saved

  1203. by him

  1204. why am I

  1205. persuaded

  1206. that that is

  1207. actually sure

  1208. and certain

  1209. for me

  1210. because he is

  1211. faithful

  1212. who has

  1213. promised it

  1214. God is not

  1215. going to be

  1216. other than

  1217. true to his word

  1218. and when God

  1219. gives you

  1220. that hope

  1221. in your heart

  1222. that looks

  1223. forward to heaven

  1224. despite all

  1225. the imperfections

  1226. that you and I

  1227. have in our

  1228. lives tonight

  1229. one thing

  1230. you can be sure

  1231. of is this

  1232. having this

  1233. hope in Jesus

  1234. is certain

  1235. to be realized

  1236. in glory

  1237. with him

  1238. what a great

  1239. privilege that is

  1240. and doesn't

  1241. it show you

  1242. how empty

  1243. a life is

  1244. crammed

  1245. with all the

  1246. things that

  1247. this world

  1248. can actually

  1249. give you

  1250. and without

  1251. this hope

  1252. what does it

  1253. profit

  1254. as Jesus

  1255. himself said

  1256. what shall

  1257. it profit

  1258. a man

  1259. though he

  1260. gains

  1261. the whole

  1262. world

  1263. and lose

  1264. his soul

  1265. let us

  1266. hold fast

  1267. the confession

  1268. about hope

  1269. without wavering

  1270. and you see

  1271. that's where

  1272. the gathered

  1273. church again

  1274. the whole

  1275. concept

  1276. the whole

  1277. truth

  1278. the fact

  1279. of a

  1280. gathered

  1281. church

  1282. the fact

  1283. of gathering

  1284. together

  1285. that's where

  1286. it really

  1287. comes into

  1288. its own

  1289. as far

  1290. as this

  1291. is concerned

  1292. because we

  1293. all have

  1294. that hope

  1295. individually

  1296. when we're

  1297. Christians

  1298. when we're

  1299. in the

  1300. Lord

  1301. when we've

  1302. come to

  1303. put our

  1304. trust

  1305. and our

  1306. faith

  1307. in him

  1308. and when

  1309. that hope

  1310. then is

  1311. realized

  1312. in your

  1313. heart

  1314. but you

  1315. see in

  1316. order to

  1317. encourage

  1318. one another

  1319. to strengthen

  1320. that hope

  1321. that's in

  1322. you individually

  1323. you think

  1324. well I need

  1325. to be with

  1326. the Lord's

  1327. people

  1328. I need

  1329. to be

  1330. a part

  1331. of and a

  1332. member of

  1333. that gather

  1334. church

  1335. and if I

  1336. want my

  1337. hope to

  1338. be something

  1339. that grows

  1340. if I want

  1341. to have

  1342. if I want

  1343. to have

  1344. a holding

  1345. fast of

  1346. that confession

  1347. of my

  1348. hope

  1349. if I want

  1350. that holding

  1351. of my

  1352. hope to

  1353. become

  1354. stronger

  1355. I can't

  1356. do it

  1357. without the

  1358. Lord's

  1359. people

  1360. not at

  1361. least not

  1362. very successfully

  1363. but here we

  1364. are together

  1365. and here we

  1366. are addressed

  1367. in a way

  1368. that God

  1369. sees us

  1370. gathered together

  1371. as worshipping

  1372. people

  1373. and here

  1374. is what

  1375. God is

  1376. saying

  1377. to us

  1378. together

  1379. let us

  1380. hold fast

  1381. the confession

  1382. of our

  1383. hope

  1384. without

  1385. wavering

  1386. so there's

  1387. let us

  1388. draw near

  1389. let us

  1390. hold fast

  1391. and then thirdly

  1392. there's let us

  1393. consider

  1394. let us

  1395. consider

  1396. how to stir

  1397. up one another

  1398. to love and to

  1399. good works

  1400. now I think

  1401. I've referred to

  1402. this verse

  1403. previously

  1404. and we have

  1405. preached on

  1406. some aspects

  1407. of this

  1408. previously

  1409. and it's

  1410. better I think

  1411. that the way

  1412. it's worded

  1413. in the

  1414. authorized

  1415. version on

  1416. this occasion

  1417. at least

  1418. because literally

  1419. what the text

  1420. is saying

  1421. is let us

  1422. consider

  1423. one another

  1424. let us

  1425. consider

  1426. one another

  1427. so as

  1428. to stir

  1429. one another

  1430. up to love

  1431. and to good

  1432. works

  1433. and that makes

  1434. a big difference

  1435. he's saying

  1436. more than

  1437. let's consider

  1438. how to

  1439. stir one

  1440. another up

  1441. what he's

  1442. really saying

  1443. is let's

  1444. give attention

  1445. to one

  1446. another

  1447. let's

  1448. actually

  1449. be thoughtful

  1450. and prayerful

  1451. in regard

  1452. to one

  1453. another

  1454. let's

  1455. consider

  1456. in that

  1457. sense

  1458. of it

  1459. it's a

  1460. very strong

  1461. word actually

  1462. it's used

  1463. back in

  1464. chapter 3

  1465. at the beginning

  1466. of chapter 3

  1467. you find it

  1468. used there

  1469. at the very

  1470. start of it

  1471. you who

  1472. shared

  1473. in heavenly

  1474. calling

  1475. consider

  1476. Jesus

  1477. consider

  1478. Jesus

  1479. now obviously

  1480. that means

  1481. a serious

  1482. consideration

  1483. giving

  1484. your mind

  1485. to thinking

  1486. of

  1487. giving your

  1488. mind to

  1489. your relationship

  1490. with Jesus

  1491. to consider

  1492. himself

  1493. all the time

  1494. focus upon

  1495. him

  1496. keep your

  1497. focus upon

  1498. him

  1499. and that's

  1500. the same

  1501. word

  1502. that's now

  1503. used here

  1504. in considering

  1505. one another

  1506. let us

  1507. consider

  1508. one another

  1509. and you see

  1510. how that fits

  1511. into not

  1512. neglecting

  1513. to meet

  1514. together

  1515. because to

  1516. consider one

  1517. another means

  1518. that we

  1519. gather together

  1520. that we

  1521. interact with

  1522. each other

  1523. that we

  1524. are not

  1525. being

  1526. nosy

  1527. and busy

  1528. bodies

  1529. looking into

  1530. other people's

  1531. lives and

  1532. aspects of

  1533. the lives

  1534. that we

  1535. have no

  1536. business

  1537. prying into

  1538. that's not

  1539. what he's

  1540. on about

  1541. here

  1542. he's on

  1543. here about

  1544. actually

  1545. improving

  1546. our own

  1547. progress

  1548. spiritually

  1549. and he's

  1550. saying

  1551. let us

  1552. consider

  1553. one another

  1554. let's give

  1555. due

  1556. thoughtful

  1557. prayerful

  1558. attention

  1559. to one

  1560. another

  1561. because that's

  1562. the opposite

  1563. really isn't

  1564. it of

  1565. I think I

  1566. mentioned

  1567. last time

  1568. the world

  1569. and the

  1570. worldliness

  1571. that you

  1572. see around

  1573. us sadly

  1574. is very

  1575. much

  1576. I can

  1577. just look

  1578. after my

  1579. own life

  1580. and I

  1581. want to

  1582. look

  1583. after my

  1584. own

  1585. life

  1586. this

  1587. kind

  1588. of

  1589. inward

  1590. selfish

  1591. individualistic

  1592. view of

  1593. life

  1594. well the

  1595. gathered

  1596. people of

  1597. God

  1598. are the

  1599. opposite

  1600. to that

  1601. because you

  1602. don't gather

  1603. here with

  1604. other people

  1605. thinking well

  1606. it's all

  1607. about me

  1608. and it's

  1609. all about

  1610. what I

  1611. can get

  1612. out of

  1613. the service

  1614. of worship

  1615. that I'm

  1616. attending

  1617. that's really

  1618. all I'm

  1619. concerned with

  1620. how I can

  1621. improve my

  1622. own spiritual

  1623. standing

  1624. and understanding

  1625. and progress

  1626. yes there's

  1627. that individual

  1628. aspect but

  1629. you're coming

  1630. and you're

  1631. considering others

  1632. you're considering

  1633. one another

  1634. we're considering

  1635. together

  1636. each other's

  1637. lives so as to

  1638. help one

  1639. another along

  1640. the path of

  1641. life

  1642. let us

  1643. consider

  1644. one another

  1645. and you know

  1646. we can do

  1647. that before

  1648. we ever come

  1649. to church

  1650. and we should

  1651. be doing that

  1652. before we ever

  1653. come to church

  1654. let me just

  1655. put it to

  1656. myself

  1657. and put it

  1658. to yourselves

  1659. as well

  1660. because we

  1661. here together

  1662. did I

  1663. think before

  1664. I left

  1665. home

  1666. before I

  1667. left my

  1668. house to

  1669. come to

  1670. this service

  1671. did I

  1672. think even

  1673. briefly of

  1674. what it would

  1675. be like to

  1676. meet with

  1677. others and

  1678. those who

  1679. are going

  1680. to be

  1681. meeting with

  1682. me

  1683. did I

  1684. come into

  1685. this building

  1686. tonight and

  1687. take my

  1688. place wherever

  1689. I'm seated

  1690. and was one

  1691. of the first

  1692. things I did

  1693. look around

  1694. me and see

  1695. who else is

  1696. here how can

  1697. I pray for

  1698. them what's

  1699. my responsibility

  1700. for them to

  1701. ask that they

  1702. too will be

  1703. blessed or did

  1704. I just think

  1705. of myself or

  1706. did I just to

  1707. come in and

  1708. just start talking

  1709. about the things

  1710. of the day

  1711. and here he is

  1712. saying let us

  1713. consider one

  1714. another let's

  1715. make it a

  1716. practice when

  1717. we come through

  1718. these doors to

  1719. worship the

  1720. Lord together

  1721. that we give

  1722. due prayerful

  1723. attention to

  1724. each other

  1725. as you look

  1726. around you and

  1727. you see people

  1728. and you know

  1729. that they have

  1730. different needs

  1731. maybe somebody

  1732. is recently

  1733. bereaved

  1734. maybe somebody

  1735. is going

  1736. through some

  1737. very difficult

  1738. challenges in

  1739. life that you

  1740. know are

  1741. already made

  1742. public

  1743. maybe somebody

  1744. you know has

  1745. a difficulty in

  1746. their family that

  1747. they are wrestling

  1748. with and that has

  1749. become known

  1750. it is not

  1751. something to be

  1752. ashamed of

  1753. but as you

  1754. sit there and

  1755. as you see

  1756. such people

  1757. around you

  1758. and me too

  1759. let's consider

  1760. one another

  1761. so as to

  1762. stir up you

  1763. see he's

  1764. saying to

  1765. love and

  1766. to good

  1767. works

  1768. and that's

  1769. tied up with

  1770. what he said

  1771. here encouraging

  1772. one another

  1773. not neglecting

  1774. to meet

  1775. together as

  1776. is the habit

  1777. of some

  1778. but encouraging

  1779. one another

  1780. and all the

  1781. more as you

  1782. see the day

  1783. approaching

  1784. as we said

  1785. at the beginning

  1786. here the two

  1787. sides are the

  1788. same issue

  1789. the same

  1790. coin if you

  1791. like

  1792. instead of

  1793. neglecting to

  1794. meet together

  1795. we are actually

  1796. meeting together

  1797. so as to

  1798. encourage one

  1799. another

  1800. so as to

  1801. give consideration

  1802. to one another

  1803. in order that

  1804. we will have

  1805. our own lives

  1806. as we pray

  1807. for one another

  1808. and consider

  1809. one another

  1810. so that we

  1811. will actually

  1812. be stirred up

  1813. by that

  1814. to love

  1815. and to good

  1816. works

  1817. a wonderful

  1818. thing isn't

  1819. it when

  1820. when you think

  1821. of how

  1822. love for God

  1823. and love

  1824. for God's

  1825. people

  1826. and love

  1827. for God's

  1828. church

  1829. brings us

  1830. and persuades

  1831. us and

  1832. constrains us

  1833. to come

  1834. together

  1835. and worship

  1836. then you

  1837. find the

  1838. cycle going

  1839. around the

  1840. other direction

  1841. if you like

  1842. that gathering

  1843. together

  1844. actually adds

  1845. to your love

  1846. for one another

  1847. and for God

  1848. it's a complete

  1849. cycle

  1850. love brings you

  1851. to be with

  1852. others who are

  1853. worshipping

  1854. and being with

  1855. others who are

  1856. worshipping

  1857. increases your

  1858. own love

  1859. and your appetite

  1860. for them

  1861. let's consider

  1862. one another

  1863. not neglecting

  1864. to do this

  1865. as he says

  1866. is the habit

  1867. of some

  1868. even in his

  1869. day

  1870. during this

  1871. early time

  1872. in the church

  1873. at the time

  1874. even of the

  1875. apostles

  1876. he was already

  1877. aware that

  1878. some people

  1879. were making

  1880. a habit

  1881. of not

  1882. gathering

  1883. with the

  1884. others who

  1885. came to

  1886. worship

  1887. not neglecting

  1888. to meet

  1889. together

  1890. as is

  1891. the habit

  1892. of some

  1893. I'm sure

  1894. it was

  1895. in some ways

  1896. understandable

  1897. because these

  1898. Hebrews were

  1899. obviously

  1900. suffering for

  1901. their faith

  1902. and they were

  1903. going through

  1904. some very

  1905. testing times

  1906. and you'll

  1907. find here

  1908. in the likes

  1909. of this

  1910. chapter itself

  1911. at verses

  1912. 32 there

  1913. to 39

  1914. where he says

  1915. recall the

  1916. former days

  1917. when after

  1918. you were

  1919. enlightened

  1920. you endured

  1921. a hard

  1922. struggle

  1923. with sufferings

  1924. sometimes

  1925. being publicly

  1926. exposed to

  1927. reproach

  1928. and affliction

  1929. and so on

  1930. and he's

  1931. saying

  1932. recall these

  1933. things

  1934. go back

  1935. in your

  1936. mind

  1937. and think

  1938. well this

  1939. is really

  1940. the life

  1941. that I

  1942. entered

  1943. on willingly

  1944. so why

  1945. should I

  1946. think

  1947. differently

  1948. now

  1949. he's

  1950. saying

  1951. don't

  1952. neglect

  1953. don't let

  1954. us neglect

  1955. gathering

  1956. together

  1957. but it

  1958. may very

  1959. well be

  1960. that it

  1961. wasn't

  1962. it certainly

  1963. isn't the

  1964. case in

  1965. our day

  1966. and in

  1967. our context

  1968. that you

  1969. have

  1970. persecution

  1971. in the way

  1972. you have

  1973. it in

  1974. other parts

  1975. of the

  1976. world

  1977. and in

  1978. the way

  1979. you find

  1980. it described

  1981. in some

  1982. of these

  1983. New Testament

  1984. letters

  1985. it's not

  1986. however

  1987. difficult it

  1988. may be

  1989. for us

  1990. whatever

  1991. opposition

  1992. you meet

  1993. with

  1994. you can't

  1995. really say

  1996. that it

  1997. equates to

  1998. persecution

  1999. such as you

  2000. found in

  2001. those days

  2002. or still

  2003. find in

  2004. places

  2005. throughout

  2006. the world

  2007. here is

  2008. what one

  2009. commentator

  2010. said

  2011. William Lane

  2012. in his

  2013. commentary

  2014. on Hebrews

  2015. it is

  2016. natural to

  2017. think

  2018. that the

  2019. neglect

  2020. of the

  2021. meetings

  2022. was

  2023. motivated

  2024. by fear

  2025. of

  2026. recognition

  2027. by outsiders

  2028. in a

  2029. time of

  2030. persecution

  2031. or by

  2032. some other

  2033. acute

  2034. concern

  2035. it is

  2036. sobering

  2037. to discover

  2038. that in

  2039. the early

  2040. second

  2041. century

  2042. in Rome

  2043. it was

  2044. simply

  2045. preoccupation

  2046. with business

  2047. affairs

  2048. that accounted

  2049. for the

  2050. neglect

  2051. of the

  2052. meetings

  2053. of a

  2054. church

  2055. that is

  2056. sobering

  2057. but then

  2058. you see

  2059. you go back

  2060. to the

  2061. Lord's

  2062. own

  2063. teaching

  2064. in the

  2065. parable

  2066. of the

  2067. sower

  2068. what do

  2069. you find

  2070. in the

  2071. parable

  2072. of the

  2073. sower

  2074. well you

  2075. find him

  2076. saying

  2077. that there

  2078. were all

  2079. these

  2080. different

  2081. types

  2082. of soil

  2083. four

  2084. different

  2085. types

  2086. of soil

  2087. into

  2088. which the

  2089. seed

  2090. fell

  2091. the seed

  2092. of the

  2093. gospel

  2094. represented

  2095. in its

  2096. reception

  2097. or lack

  2098. of it

  2099. by these

  2100. four soils

  2101. what were

  2102. they like

  2103. well the

  2104. one that

  2105. was

  2106. by the

  2107. roadside

  2108. the devil

  2109. came and

  2110. picked away

  2111. what was

  2112. sown in

  2113. the heart

  2114. and then he

  2115. says what

  2116. was sown on

  2117. the rocky

  2118. ground

  2119. is one who

  2120. hears the

  2121. word and

  2122. immediately

  2123. receives it

  2124. with joy

  2125. yet he has

  2126. no root in

  2127. himself but

  2128. endures for a

  2129. while and

  2130. when tribulation

  2131. or persecution

  2132. arises on

  2133. account of

  2134. the word

  2135. immediately he

  2136. falls away

  2137. well we've

  2138. said already

  2139. that's not a

  2140. category that

  2141. we can easily

  2142. fit into

  2143. because the

  2144. level of

  2145. persecution

  2146. we face

  2147. in whatever

  2148. opposition we

  2149. have it

  2150. doesn't really

  2151. amount much

  2152. to opposition

  2153. though it

  2154. might be very

  2155. difficult and

  2156. I don't want

  2157. to minimize

  2158. it but then

  2159. the next one

  2160. as for what

  2161. was sown

  2162. among thorns

  2163. this is the

  2164. one who

  2165. hears the

  2166. word but

  2167. the cares

  2168. of the world

  2169. and the

  2170. deceitfulness

  2171. of riches

  2172. choke the

  2173. word and

  2174. it becomes

  2175. it proves

  2176. unfruitful

  2177. you see

  2178. there it

  2179. is the

  2180. cares of

  2181. this life

  2182. the cares

  2183. of this

  2184. world and

  2185. the deceitfulness

  2186. of riches

  2187. the materialistic

  2188. bent of our

  2189. hearts will

  2190. draw us very

  2191. quickly away

  2192. from profiting

  2193. from the word

  2194. of the gospel

  2195. planted in our

  2196. hearts

  2197. that's why we

  2198. need each other

  2199. that's why we

  2200. need to gather

  2201. together in a

  2202. way that doesn't

  2203. neglect the meeting

  2204. together to

  2205. encourage one

  2206. another

  2207. encouraging one

  2208. another instead

  2209. of neglecting

  2210. of one another

  2211. and he's

  2212. saying it's to

  2213. love and to

  2214. good works

  2215. because that's

  2216. really outwardly

  2217. what a Christian

  2218. life is known

  2219. as in the

  2220. world

  2221. not people

  2222. who keep

  2223. themselves entirely

  2224. apart from

  2225. contact with

  2226. the world

  2227. but people

  2228. hopefully of

  2229. which the

  2230. world could

  2231. say these

  2232. are people

  2233. who are

  2234. dedicated to

  2235. love

  2236. and to

  2237. good works

  2238. to helping

  2239. people

  2240. and he says

  2241. all the more

  2242. as you see

  2243. the day

  2244. drawing near

  2245. just finally

  2246. with these

  2247. words

  2248. all the more

  2249. as you see

  2250. the day

  2251. drawing near

  2252. what is the

  2253. day

  2254. that's drawing

  2255. near

  2256. it's the day

  2257. of Christ's

  2258. return

  2259. the day of

  2260. his judgment

  2261. of the world

  2262. what he's saying

  2263. to us here

  2264. is the more

  2265. we realize

  2266. as we surely

  2267. do every day

  2268. that we're

  2269. another day

  2270. nearer to

  2271. the coming

  2272. of Christ

  2273. that we're

  2274. another day

  2275. nearer to

  2276. the judgment

  2277. of the world

  2278. and of us

  2279. all by Jesus

  2280. what should

  2281. that be doing

  2282. for us

  2283. what should

  2284. our response

  2285. be to that

  2286. well it's this

  2287. that we do

  2288. this

  2289. that we do

  2290. this meeting

  2291. together

  2292. and encouraging

  2293. one another

  2294. all the more

  2295. as you see

  2296. the day

  2297. drawing near

  2298. in other words

  2299. he's saying

  2300. the more

  2301. you think

  2302. about the

  2303. return of

  2304. Jesus

  2305. and the

  2306. day of

  2307. judgment

  2308. the more

  2309. we should

  2310. be concerned

  2311. never to

  2312. neglect the

  2313. meeting of

  2314. ourselves

  2315. together

  2316. but rather

  2317. encouraging

  2318. one another

  2319. as the

  2320. gathered

  2321. church

  2322. of God

  2323. now all

  2324. of that

  2325. fits in

  2326. with what

  2327. we're beginning

  2328. to do

  2329. monthly

  2330. at our

  2331. Wednesday

  2332. first Wednesday

  2333. of the month

  2334. where we

  2335. began looking

  2336. at six

  2337. studies

  2338. of what

  2339. are called

  2340. six steps

  2341. to loving

  2342. your church

  2343. very practical

  2344. way of looking

  2345. at things

  2346. but it's

  2347. designed so

  2348. that we

  2349. will think

  2350. of a

  2351. relationship

  2352. with each

  2353. other

  2354. that we

  2355. will actually

  2356. think of

  2357. as this

  2358. passage

  2359. tonight

  2360. says

  2361. not neglecting

  2362. to meet

  2363. together

  2364. but encouraging

  2365. one another

  2366. and thinking

  2367. of what it

  2368. is we're

  2369. doing

  2370. when we're

  2371. part of

  2372. the church

  2373. of God

  2374. and our

  2375. privilege

  2376. to love

  2377. the church

  2378. to love

  2379. the people

  2380. of God

  2381. to love

  2382. the gathered

  2383. worshipping

  2384. people of

  2385. God

  2386. let us

  2387. not he

  2388. says

  2389. neglect

  2390. the gathering

  2391. of ourselves

  2392. together

  2393. let us

  2394. draw near

  2395. let us

  2396. hold fast

  2397. let us

  2398. consider

  2399. one another

  2400. may God

  2401. bless

  2402. these thoughts

  2403. on his

  2404. word to us

  2405. we're going

  2406. to conclude

  2407. this evening

  2408. singing in

  2409. Psalm 65

  2410. Psalm 65

  2411. that's on

  2412. page 82

  2413. and verses

  2414. 1 to

  2415. 5

  2416. so on

  2417. page 82

  2418. Psalm 65

  2419. and Zion

  2420. praise awaits

  2421. you Lord

  2422. to you our

  2423. vows will

  2424. pay

  2425. to you all

  2426. people will

  2427. come near

  2428. you hear us

  2429. when we

  2430. pray

  2431. when we

  2432. were overwhelmed

  2433. by sins

  2434. and guilt

  2435. upon us

  2436. lay

  2437. you pardoned

  2438. all our

  2439. trespasses

  2440. and washed

  2441. our guilt

  2442. away

  2443. how blessed

  2444. are those

  2445. you choose

  2446. and bring

  2447. within your

  2448. courts of

  2449. grace

  2450. we're filled

  2451. with blessings

  2452. in your house

  2453. and your most

  2454. holy place

  2455. with awesome

  2456. deeds of

  2457. righteousness

  2458. you answer

  2459. us oh

  2460. God

  2461. our savior

  2462. hope of

  2463. further seas

  2464. and all

  2465. the earth

  2466. abroad

  2467. so let's

  2468. sing these

  2469. verses to

  2470. God's

  2471. praise

  2472. amen

  2473. to you

  2474. in Zion

  2475. praise

  2476. I

  2477. wait

  2478. to

  2479. Lord

  2480. to

  2481. you

  2482. our

  2483. vows

  2484. we'll

  2485. pray

  2486. to

  2487. you

  2488. all

  2489. people

  2490. will

  2491. come

  2492. near

  2493. you

  2494. hear

  2495. us

  2496. when

  2497. we

  2498. pray

  2499. when

  2500. we

  2501. will

  2502. overwhelm

  2503. our

  2504. sins

  2505. and

  2506. guilt

  2507. upon

  2508. us

  2509. lay

  2510. you

  2511. pardon

  2512. all

  2513. our

  2514. trespasses

  2515. and

  2516. washed

  2517. our

  2518. guilt

  2519. away

  2520. how

  2521. blessed

  2522. are

  2523. those

  2524. you

  2525. choose

  2526. and

  2527. bring

  2528. within

  2529. your

  2530. courts

  2531. all

  2532. and

  2533. all

  2534. our

  2535. and

  2536. the

  2537. Lord

  2538. of

  2539. grace

  2540. we're

  2541. filled

  2542. with

  2543. blessings

  2544. in

  2545. your

  2546. eyes

  2547. in

  2548. your

  2549. hope's

  2550. holy

  2551. place

  2552. with

  2553. awesome

  2554. peace

  2555. of

  2556. righteousness

  2557. the

  2558. needs

  2559. of

  2560. righteousness

  2561. you

  2562. answered

  2563. us

  2564. O

  2565. God

  2566. our

  2567. Savior

  2568. hope

  2569. of
