  1. We're going to begin our worship by singing to God's praise. We're singing in Psalm 90,

  2. in the Scottish Psalter, Psalm 90. We're singing from verse 13 down to the end of the Psalm,

  3. page 350 of the Psalm book, Psalm 90 at verse 13 down to the end. Turn,

  4. yet again to us, O Lord, how long thus shall it be? Let it repent thee now for those that servants

  5. are to thee. A Psalm crying out to God for his help. And the prayer at the end of the Psalm,

  6. verse 17, and let the beauty of the Lord, our God, be us upon our handiworks. Establish thou,

  7. establish them each one. We'll sing from verse 13 to 17 to God's praise, and we stand to sing.

  8. Yet again to us, O Lord, how long thus shall it be? Let it repent thee now for those that

  9. that serve us the Lord, our God, be us upon our handiworks. Let it repent thee now for those that serve us the Lord,

  10. and let it repent thee now for those that serve us the Lord, our God, be us upon our handiworks.

  11. O Lord, how long thin we are, and let it repent thee now for those that serve us the Lord, our God, be us upon our handiworks.

  12. O Lord, how long as shall it be? Let it repent thee now for those that serve us the Lord, our God, be us upon our handiworks.

  13. Let it repent thee now for those that serve us after thee.

  14. O with thy tender mercy, Lord, as thou art thee satisfied,

  15. So we rejoice shall all our days, and still be glad in thee.

  16. According as the days of thee,

  17. When we leave the past,

  18. And years when we ill have seen,

  19. So do thou make us glad.

  20. O let thy word and power appear,

  21. Thy servants face thee poor,

  22. And show us who their children dear,

  23. Thy glory evermore,

  24. And let the beauty of the Lord

  25. Our God be us upon,

  26. Our handy word established now,

  27. Established there, ye strong.

  28. We come to God in prayer.

  29. We bow our heads in a word of prayer.

  30. Our Father in heaven,

  31. We thank you for the beauty of this day,

  32. As we've enjoyed walking into the church here,

  33. As we've enjoyed just even looking out through our windows,

  34. On this bright sunny morning.

  35. We thank you for the beauty it shows to us.

  36. But we thank you that behind it all is the wonder of you as the maker,

  37. The creator of it all.

  38. And we have sung of the beauty of the Lord,

  39. And we pray that the beauty of the Lord would be upon us today,

  40. As the psalm says,

  41. That we would know the joy of your presence,

  42. That we would know joy in our time of worship here,

  43. That in all that we do,

  44. We would know, Lord, that we are able to look to you,

  45. And to rejoice in you,

  46. That you are God,

  47. And there is no other.

  48. So we pray, Lord, for everything that we do today.

  49. We pray for the time of worships we enjoy together,

  50. Both this morning and this evening.

  51. We thank you for the Sunday school,

  52. And the creche and the tweenies,

  53. And the time they enjoy together there.

  54. We thank you for times of fellowship around even just a cup of tea,

  55. And getting to know one another,

  56. And sharing with one another.

  57. We thank you for all that we have to enjoy from your hands.

  58. And we pray, Lord, that you will make us thankful,

  59. For every good gift that we have,

  60. All that you give us day by day.

  61. We do pray, Lord, your blessing on us as a people,

  62. From young to old here.

  63. We thank you for all the homes and the families represented.

  64. Thank you for those who are tuning in online as well.

  65. And we pray that near and far, Lord, your word will go with power,

  66. That will speak to us and remind us of the greatness of God,

  67. The goodness that you have shown to us,

  68. And giving your son, Jesus Christ.

  69. And we thank you that we come in his name asking all things.

  70. So we pray, Lord, that you will draw near to us and be with us in all that we do.

  71. That you will pardon our sins as we ask it all in that precious name of Jesus,

  72. For his sake and glory.

  73. Amen.

  74. I'll just have a word to the young ones before you go through next door.

  75. You know, last week I was seeing how many of you were going out,

  76. Coming down through the church.

  77. And it's great to see so many of you coming week by week

  78. And going through to learn so much about Jesus and all that he has done for us.

  79. We're so thankful to be able to gather together and worship.

  80. Now, there was something that was asked of maybe not so much the young folks,

  81. But maybe the parents, but parents might need help in order to do this.

  82. It was on the notice sheet today.

  83. And that is to register for the Sunday school.

  84. And to make it easy or make it more difficult, maybe for some,

  85. There's a QR code.

  86. And then you start thinking to yourself,

  87. What on earth is a QR code?

  88. So probably your parents or grandparents will need a little help in that being explained to them.

  89. And how it works.

  90. Because it's amazing what it can do.

  91. And you think to yourself, I've got a phone here in my pocket.

  92. And this is all you need to register yourself at the Sunday school.

  93. But in order to do that, you need all kinds of codes.

  94. I was thinking, well, there's the QR code.

  95. But before you come to that, there's other codes you need to have as well.

  96. First, you need a passcode to get into the phone.

  97. So everyone will have their own passcode that they have to put into the phone to get entry into the phone.

  98. And then once you're in the phone, to get to the QR code, you need the Wi-Fi code.

  99. You need access to get a connection online.

  100. And then you need to use this QR code to get to the form that you need to fill in.

  101. It all sounds maybe a little bit complicated.

  102. But it's actually quite straightforward.

  103. You look at the QR code there and you scan it and it will do everything for you almost.

  104. But it was reminding me as I thought of all these different codes and how they work.

  105. And how complicated things can sound.

  106. That that's sometimes the way it is with the Bible and the Gospel.

  107. How we can maybe make things sound more complicated than they really are.

  108. But how we can just look at it and see that there's actually easy access to get to the Lord Jesus.

  109. You think about a passcode.

  110. It gives you entry.

  111. Well, as you read the Bible, it's like a code.

  112. It gives you entry to come and draw near to God.

  113. You're coming to hear what God is saying to us.

  114. Then we think of the Wi-Fi connections.

  115. One of these things that so often bothers us.

  116. When we go somewhere new or when we're out and about, is there a Wi-Fi code?

  117. Can I get a connection?

  118. Can I get online?

  119. Well, here we've got a connection as well.

  120. A connection to Jesus.

  121. Through His Word, we have this connection.

  122. And then we come to the QR code.

  123. Does anybody know what QR stands for?

  124. You go into shops, you go into restaurants, you go into all kinds of different places,

  125. and it can say, scan the QR code.

  126. You can sit at your table in a restaurant and order your food and everything just by scanning a QR code.

  127. Does anybody know what QR stands for?

  128. It stands for quick response.

  129. That's what it stands for.

  130. QR stands for quick response.

  131. The QR code enables you to respond quickly to something.

  132. So this QR code on the sheet today, it allows you to respond quickly to Ian

  133. and let him know all your details for registering at Sunday school.

  134. But the Bible calls for a quick response as well.

  135. In many ways, that's what we're going to be looking at this morning as we look in the Book of Acts.

  136. We think of a man who was in charge of a prison.

  137. He was called a jailer.

  138. He had a question.

  139. What must I do to be saved?

  140. And the people that were with him in the prison, Peter and Silas, they gave him a response.

  141. They said, believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.

  142. This is like a QR code for them.

  143. It demanded a quick response.

  144. And he believed.

  145. He trusted in the Lord Jesus.

  146. And that's what the gospel is about.

  147. We can sometimes make it seem so complicated.

  148. But it's about having an entry, coming near to God, having access to Jesus and coming with a quick response.

  149. Believing in the Lord Jesus.

  150. So Ian wants you to respond quickly to this QR code on the sheet.

  151. But more importantly for us all is to have a QR, a quick response to the gospel.

  152. And to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  153. We're going to say the Lord's Prayer together now.

  154. Let's say the Lord's Prayer.

  155. Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

  156. Thy kingdom come.

  157. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  158. Give us this day our daily bread.

  159. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

  160. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  161. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever.

  162. Amen.

  163. We're going to sing again to God's praise.

  164. We're going to sing in Psalm 130.

  165. And this is in the Scottish Psalter, page 421 of the psalm book.

  166. Psalm 130.

  167. We can sing the whole of this psalm together.

  168. Verse 1.

  169. Lord, from the depths to thee I cried, my voice, Lord, do thou hear.

  170. And to my supplications voice, give an attentive ear.

  171. We'll sing the whole of this psalm to God's praise.

  172. Lord, from the depths to thee I cried, my voice, Lord, do thou hear.

  173. Lord, from the depths to thee I cried, my voice, Lord, do thou hear.

  174. And to thee I cried, my voice, Lord, do thou hear.

  175. My voice, Lord, do thou hear.

  176. And to my supplications voice, give an attentive ear.

  177. Lord, who shall stand if thou, O Lord, do thou hear.

  178. Lord, who shall stand if thou, O Lord, shouldst hearken in pity.

  179. But yet with thee forgive me.

  180. Lord, who shall stand if thou, O Lord, shouldst hearken in pity.

  181. Lord, who shall stand if thou, O Lord, shouldst hearken in pity.

  182. But yet with thee forgive me.

  183. But yet with thee forgive me.

  184. Forgivenesses that fear thou hearst me.

  185. I wait for God, my soul doth wait.

  186. My hope is in his word.

  187. More than may that our morning watch.

  188. My soul doth watch my soul, which are the Lord.

  189. I say more than may that to watch.

  190. The morning light to see.

  191. Let Israel open the Lord.

  192. For with him blesses be.

  193. And plentious redemption is ever found within him.

  194. And from all his iniquities he is death shall redeem.

  195. Give him peace and heal.

  196. Thank you.

  197. I'll return to read in God's word.

  198. Reading in the Book of Acts.

  199. Reading in chapter 16.

  200. Acts chapter 16.

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  201. Amen.

  202. We're taking up our reading at verse 16,

  203. although we're taking into consideration

  204. from verse 11 this morning as well.

  205. We will see the conversion of Lydia,

  206. who was a businesswoman, if you like,

  207. seller of purple.

  208. But she was gathered this day with many other women

  209. in a place of prayer.

  210. And Paul and Silas went to see her.

  211. And it says there in verse 14,

  212. One who heard us was a woman named Lydia

  213. from the city of Thyatira,

  214. a seller of purple goods,

  215. who was a worshipper of God.

  216. The Lord opened her heart

  217. to pay attention to what was said by Paul.

  218. So we're taking that into consideration as well

  219. as we take up our reading in verse 16.

  220. As we were going to the place of prayer,

  221. we were met by a slave girl

  222. who had a spirit of divination

  223. and brought her own owners much gain

  224. by fortune-telling.

  225. She followed Paul and us, crying out,

  226. These men are servants of the Most High God,

  227. who proclaim to you the way of salvation.

  228. And this she kept doing for many days.

  229. Paul, having become greatly annoyed,

  230. turned and said to the spirit,

  231. I command you in the name of Jesus Christ

  232. to come out of her.

  233. And it came out that very hour.

  234. But when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone,

  235. they seized Paul and Silas

  236. and dragged them into the marketplace

  237. before the rulers.

  238. And when they had brought them to the magistrates,

  239. they said,

  240. These men are Jews,

  241. and they are disturbing our city.

  242. They advocate customs that are not lawful for us

  243. as Romans to accept or practice.

  244. The crowd joined in attacking them,

  245. and the magistrates tore the garments of them

  246. and gave orders to beat them with rods.

  247. And when they had inflicted many blows upon them,

  248. they threw them into prison,

  249. ordering the jailer to keep them safely.

  250. Having received this order,

  251. he put them into the inner prison

  252. and fastened their feet in the stocks.

  253. About midnight,

  254. Paul and Silas were praying

  255. and singing hymns to God,

  256. and the prisoners were listening to them.

  257. And suddenly there was a great earthquake.

  258. So the foundations of the prison were shaken.

  259. And immediately all the doors were opened,

  260. and everyone's bonds were unfastened.

  261. When the jailer woke

  262. and saw that the prison doors were open,

  263. he drew his sword

  264. and was about to kill himself,

  265. supposing that the prisoners had escaped.

  266. But Paul cried with a loud voice,

  267. Do not harm yourself,

  268. for we are all here.

  269. And the jailer called for lights

  270. and rushed in.

  271. And trembling with fear,

  272. he fell down before Paul and Silas.

  273. Then he brought them out and said,

  274. Sir, what must I do to be saved?

  275. And they said,

  276. Believe in the Lord Jesus,

  277. and you will be saved,

  278. you and your household.

  279. And they spoke the word of the Lord to him

  280. and to all who were in his house.

  281. And he took them the same hour of the night

  282. and washed their wounds.

  283. And he was baptized at once,

  284. he and all his family.

  285. Then he brought them up into his house

  286. and set food before them.

  287. And he rejoiced,

  288. along with his entire household,

  289. that he had believed in God.

  290. But when it was day,

  291. the magistrate sent the police,

  292. saying,

  293. Let those men go.

  294. And their jailer reported these words

  295. to Paul,

  296. saying,

  297. The magistrates have sent to let you go.

  298. Therefore,

  299. come out now and go in peace.

  300. But Paul said to them,

  301. They have beaten us publicly,

  302. uncondemned,

  303. men who are Roman citizens,

  304. and have thrown us into prison.

  305. And do they now throw us out secretly?

  306. No.

  307. Let them come themselves and take us out.

  308. The police reported these words to the magistrates,

  309. and they were afraid

  310. when they heard that they were Roman citizens.

  311. So they came and apologized to them.

  312. And they took them out

  313. and asked them to leave the city.

  314. So they went out of the prison

  315. and visited Lydia.

  316. And when they had seen the brothers,

  317. they encouraged them

  318. and departed.

  319. Amen.

  320. And may God bless that reading from his word.

  321. Let's again just bow our heads

  322. in a word of prayer.

  323. Let us pray.

  324. O Lord, our God,

  325. we thank you

  326. that you are a gracious,

  327. a merciful God,

  328. a God who is patient with his people,

  329. a God who is long-suffering,

  330. as your word describes,

  331. and yet a God who is so quickly

  332. able to transform people's lives.

  333. And we thank you that you are the God,

  334. the one who has all power,

  335. the power to salvation,

  336. the power to convert,

  337. the power to change

  338. from those who are darkness

  339. to those who are

  340. in the marvelous light of the gospel.

  341. And we thank you

  342. for your transforming power,

  343. that just as you spoke

  344. this world into creation,

  345. so your voice still has power

  346. to this day,

  347. power over all people

  348. and all situations.

  349. And we thank you that in your word,

  350. as we have read it together here,

  351. we are reminded of your power,

  352. power and control in all circumstances,

  353. circumstances that seem

  354. outwith our natural control,

  355. but yet everything is in your hands.

  356. We think of the people

  357. we have read of in this passage,

  358. Lydia,

  359. a seller of purple,

  360. and yet one who is so wealthy,

  361. but maybe still distant from you.

  362. But we thank you for your power,

  363. that your word opened her heart.

  364. We thank you too of a young girl

  365. who was used by masters

  366. who were making money out of her,

  367. and yet you had power to set her free.

  368. We thank you for the Philippian jailer

  369. in his household,

  370. the one who was in fear of his very life,

  371. and yet was brought to rejoice in God.

  372. We thank you for the way your word reminds us

  373. that you have power,

  374. not just in all these circumstances,

  375. but power to this day over all our lives,

  376. lives of people who,

  377. as we often do,

  378. find ourselves in so many differing situations,

  379. how changeable our situations often are,

  380. and yet you are the one who changes not.

  381. And so we thank you that today

  382. that we are able to commit ourselves

  383. and all our loved ones

  384. and all that goes on around us

  385. into your mighty hands,

  386. praying for one another,

  387. seeking to encourage one another

  388. and build one another up.

  389. We do, Lord, ask your blessing on us as a people,

  390. on homes and families

  391. and all our different needs,

  392. knowing, Lord,

  393. that they are many and varied,

  394. and yet none hidden from you.

  395. We thank you that whatever our situation today,

  396. whether we are rejoicing

  397. or whether we are sorrowful,

  398. whether we are afflicted

  399. or whatever else may be going on in our lives,

  400. that we know, Lord,

  401. that you are the one

  402. who is able to give us strength.

  403. We ask your blessing then to be upon us

  404. and to be upon those who need you

  405. in particular ways.

  406. Again, we so often pray

  407. for those who are mourning,

  408. and we know

  409. throughout our communities

  410. there are many who are mourning at this time,

  411. mourning in very different circumstances,

  412. and yet all mourning the loss of loved ones

  413. in different ways.

  414. We do pray, Lord,

  415. for your comfort,

  416. for your presence,

  417. for your peace

  418. in the midst of difficult circumstances.

  419. We know that connected to ourselves

  420. as a congregation,

  421. that there are many

  422. who have lost loved ones,

  423. and we just pray, Lord,

  424. that you will draw near to them

  425. and their families, communities,

  426. that your word will be blessed

  427. in the midst of times of sorrow.

  428. We think, too,

  429. of our island community.

  430. We have seen tragedy

  431. in our midst this week

  432. with the passing of Mark Elston,

  433. who was known by many

  434. even in this congregation,

  435. someone who came through

  436. the doors of the hall

  437. on a number of occasions

  438. and attended churches

  439. in different parts of our community.

  440. We pray, Lord,

  441. for his family

  442. as they grieve his passing,

  443. his friends,

  444. those who knew him

  445. in different ways.

  446. We commit them to you, O Lord,

  447. asking for your comfort,

  448. for your grace towards them.

  449. We know, Lord,

  450. in our world

  451. that there are so many troubles.

  452. We see it day by day.

  453. We think of Libya

  454. and the tragedy there.

  455. We think of Morocco

  456. and the earthquake.

  457. We think of

  458. so many other conflicts

  459. going on around the world

  460. and the Ukraine

  461. and further afield.

  462. We know, Lord,

  463. day by day

  464. that there is sadness

  465. and sorrow around us.

  466. But we pray, too, Lord,

  467. that you will not leave us

  468. just looking down

  469. in sorrowful ways,

  470. but that you will help us

  471. to lift our eyes,

  472. to lift our eyes to you

  473. as the one

  474. who is able to do

  475. abundantly more

  476. than all that we ask

  477. or imagine.

  478. And we thank you

  479. that no matter

  480. the difficulties

  481. in this world,

  482. that with you

  483. there is hope,

  484. that the gospel

  485. is a gospel

  486. of change,

  487. of transformation.

  488. and we know, Lord,

  489. that ultimately

  490. you will transform

  491. this world,

  492. you will transform

  493. your people.

  494. But we pray, Lord,

  495. to know your power

  496. even in these days,

  497. that we would see

  498. the power of your word

  499. going out

  500. to convict

  501. and to convert,

  502. the power of your word

  503. bringing people

  504. from darkness

  505. to light,

  506. the power of your word

  507. transforming lives

  508. and households

  509. and communities

  510. as a whole,

  511. that we would see

  512. your saving power

  513. in our midst.

  514. We pray, O Lord,

  515. for there to be

  516. much rejoicing,

  517. the rejoicing

  518. of days of salvation,

  519. people knowing

  520. the joy of salvation.

  521. We ask, O Lord,

  522. that your power

  523. will go through

  524. our lands,

  525. throughout our world,

  526. to all ends

  527. of the earth,

  528. that your word

  529. will go out

  530. with power.

  531. We thank you, Lord,

  532. for every way

  533. that it does go out,

  534. through every individual,

  535. through every congregation,

  536. denomination,

  537. through all your people

  538. around the world.

  539. We thank you

  540. that you have servants

  541. who bring your gospel

  542. and your people, Lord,

  543. who are salt and light

  544. in different parts.

  545. And we pray, Lord,

  546. that you will encourage us,

  547. that you will help us

  548. to be strong in the Lord

  549. and to be encouraged

  550. that you are at work.

  551. Lord, continue to hear

  552. our prayers,

  553. bless us as we turn

  554. to your word,

  555. remember us as a people,

  556. do us good, we pray,

  557. build us up in our faith,

  558. help us to encourage

  559. and pray for one another

  560. all the more.

  561. And we ask all these things,

  562. acknowledging our shortcomings,

  563. our sinfulness

  564. in our heart,

  565. and yet thankful

  566. as we have sung

  567. that with you

  568. there is plenteous redemption.

  569. So, Lord,

  570. forgive our sins

  571. and go with us now,

  572. continue with us

  573. throughout this day

  574. and with Adam

  575. as he's with us

  576. this evening, Lord.

  577. May you encourage him

  578. in his ministry,

  579. in his life,

  580. and in his soul.

  581. And may he be

  582. an encouragement

  583. to us too.

  584. Lord, hear us,

  585. we pray,

  586. and pardon us

  587. as we ask it all

  588. in Jesus' name.

  589. Amen.

  590. Let us again sing

  591. to God's praise.

  592. We're going to sing

  593. in Psalm 80a.

  594. It's in the Sing Psalms

  595. version,

  596. Psalm 80a,

  597. page 106.

  598. We'll sing

  599. from verse 1

  600. to verse 7.

  601. Hear, O Israel,

  602. shepherd, hear us.

  603. Joseph,

  604. like a flock you lead,

  605. you who are enthroned

  606. in glory,

  607. shine upon us

  608. in our need.

  609. We'll sing

  610. from verse 1

  611. to 7

  612. to God's praise.

  613. Amen.

  614. Hear, O Israel,

  615. shepherd, hear us.

  616. Joseph,

  617. Joseph,

  618. like a flock you lead,

  619. you who are enthroned

  620. in glory,

  621. shine upon us

  622. in our need.

  623. Shine on,

  624. angel,

  625. when man has

  626. day,

  627. and forever

  628. as your might.

  629. Turn us once again

  630. towards you.

  631. Come and save us,

  632. give us light.

  633. O Lord God,

  634. the Lord Almighty,

  635. how long will

  636. your anchor's hope,

  637. making void

  638. your people's prayers,

  639. so that all

  640. your enemies

  641. talk.

  642. You have fed

  643. the spread

  644. of sorrow,

  645. tears in plenty

  646. we must shed.

  647. We are now

  648. before our neighbors,

  649. humbled

  650. and discredited.

  651. Luke on us,

  652. O God Almighty,

  653. let us see

  654. your glory

  655. bright.

  656. Turn us once again

  657. towards you.

  658. Come and save us,

  659. give us light.

  660. Amen.

  661. So we can turn back

  662. to our reading

  663. in the book of Acts

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  664. chapter 16.

  665. And then we can read

  666. at verse 30.

  667. Acts 16

  668. at verse 30.

  669. Then he brought them

  670. out and said,

  671. Sir,

  672. what must I do

  673. to be saved?

  674. And they said,

  675. believe in the Lord

  676. Jesus

  677. and you will

  678. be saved,

  679. you and

  680. your household.

  681. We're very familiar

  682. with hearing

  683. bad news.

  684. We hear it probably

  685. every day of our lives.

  686. Some sort of

  687. bad news

  688. comes our way,

  689. whether it's

  690. very personal

  691. or local

  692. or whether it's

  693. national

  694. or international.

  695. We hear

  696. bad news

  697. so often.

  698. And the psalm

  699. that we were singing

  700. there,

  701. Psalm 80,

  702. reminds us

  703. that that is

  704. often the case.

  705. In Psalm 80

    Psalms 80:5

  706. verse 5

  707. it says,

  708. You have fed us

  709. bread of sorrow,

  710. tears in plenty

  711. we must shed.

  712. There are so much

  713. times of sorrow

  714. in our lives.

  715. But the psalmist

  716. then says,

  717. Look on us,

  718. O God Almighty.

  719. Let us see

  720. your glory

  721. bright.

  722. Turn us

  723. once again

  724. towards you.

  725. Come and save us.

  726. Give us

  727. light.

  728. So we often hear

  729. bad news.

  730. But what's

  731. the best news

  732. you've heard

  733. this week?

  734. Or even in the last

  735. number of weeks,

  736. what's the best news

  737. that you've heard?

  738. What's the best news

  739. you could hear

  740. in the week ahead?

  741. There may be many

  742. things that come

  743. to our mind

  744. when we think

  745. of good news,

  746. great things

  747. that we've heard,

  748. things that make us

  749. rejoice

  750. and are glad.

  751. But is it

  752. that we've heard

  753. of someone

  754. converted?

  755. Is it that we've

  756. heard that God

  757. has opened

  758. the heart

  759. of someone

  760. and they've

  761. come to believe

  762. in the Lord

  763. Jesus Christ?

  764. When was the last

  765. time

  766. you rejoiced

  767. in that good news?

  768. A sinner

  769. saved.

  770. The Bible

  771. tells us

  772. that there is

  773. rejoicing

  774. in heaven

  775. over one

  776. sinner

  777. who repents.

  778. And that would

  779. be great news

  780. for us to hear.

  781. Maybe we have

  782. heard it

  783. in the last week

  784. or the last

  785. number of weeks.

  786. We hear of people

  787. being converted

  788. locally

  789. or in many

  790. different parts

  791. of the world.

  792. Do we go into

  793. the week ahead?

  794. Do we come into

  795. the day-to-day

  796. with a sense

  797. of expectancy,

  798. a wonder,

  799. who the Lord

  800. will save

  801. today?

  802. Do we expect

  803. conversions

  804. to happen?

  805. Are we

  806. praying

  807. for conversions

  808. to take place?

  809. When you look

  810. at the book

  811. of Acts,

  812. it's a wonderful

  813. book of encouragement.

  814. If you're feeling

  815. discouraged

  816. in the work

  817. of the gospel,

  818. if you're feeling

  819. discouraged

  820. in evangelism

  821. and mission,

  822. turn to the book

  823. of Acts

  824. and read through

  825. it and it

  826. reminds you

  827. that God

  828. is a God

  829. of saving

  830. power.

  831. From the small

  832. numbers you see

  833. in the opening

  834. chapter,

  835. by the end

  836. of chapter 2

  837. it says,

  838. the Lord

  839. added to their

  840. number day

  841. by day

  842. those who

  843. were being

  844. saved.

  845. Salvation

  846. is of God.

  847. And so the

  848. book of Acts

  849. is a wonderful

  850. reminder to us

  851. of the power

  852. of God

  853. to salvation

  854. and power

  855. of God

  856. in the midst

  857. of all kinds

  858. of different

  859. situations.

  860. It's not always

  861. easy and plain

  862. sailing for God's

  863. people as you

  864. read through

  865. the book of Acts.

  866. Even as we've

  867. read here

  868. in Acts

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  869. chapter 16,

  870. Paul and Silas

  871. they're in prison.

  872. They're bound

  873. in chains

  874. and yet God

  875. is able to use

  876. that circumstance

  877. for his

  878. glory.

  879. And it reminds

  880. us that we have

  881. to keep in mind

  882. the greater

  883. picture of God,

  884. the bigger

  885. picture of God,

  886. that in all the

  887. things that discourage

  888. us and leave us

  889. despondent and

  890. despairing,

  891. all the sad news

  892. that comes our

  893. way so often,

  894. that we can look

  895. to God and

  896. remind ourselves

  897. that God

  898. is at work.

  899. As you go through

  900. the book of Acts,

  901. it's almost a bit

  902. like watching a

  903. child grow.

  904. If you're a

  905. parent of a child

  906. and you're with

  907. that child all

  908. the time,

  909. you're watching

  910. a child grow

  911. and maybe you

  912. don't see much

  913. change.

  914. But if you only

  915. see that child

  916. from time to

  917. time,

  918. if you're in a

  919. relation,

  920. maybe you only

  921. sees them once

  922. a year,

  923. you'll notice

  924. a huge change,

  925. a big difference.

  926. That's the way

  927. it is with the

  928. gospel sometimes.

  929. In the midst

  930. of the church

  931. and the work

  932. of the church,

  933. perhaps you think

  934. there's not much

  935. happening,

  936. nothing's really

  937. changing.

  938. Sometimes you

  939. have to take a

  940. step back

  941. and see that,

  942. yes,

  943. God is at work

  944. in this place.

  945. God is at work

  946. in our lives.

  947. God is a God

  948. of growth

  949. and a God

  950. of change.

  951. That's what the

  952. gospel does.

  953. As you look

  954. through the

  955. book of Acts,

  956. that's the way

  957. you see God

  958. working in

  959. his power.

  960. Perhaps the

  961. people then,

  962. they couldn't

  963. see what God

  964. was doing

  965. until they took

  966. a step back.

  967. Actually,

  968. when you look

  969. at chapter 1,

  970. all you see

  971. is a small

  972. group who

  973. are named.

  974. There were

  975. so few of

  976. them.

  977. But by the

  978. time you get

  979. into chapter 2

  980. and 3,

  981. there are

  982. thousands being

  983. added to the

  984. number being

  985. saved.

  986. It is about

  987. God's power.

  988. That's the same

  989. God that is at

  990. work here today

  991. in our church,

  992. in our community,

  993. in our islands,

  994. in our nation,

  995. in the world.

  996. God is our

  997. God who is

  998. working in

  999. power.

  1000. And we can

  1001. take encouragement

  1002. from God's

  1003. word that he

  1004. will work,

  1005. that he will

  1006. do, that as

  1007. we look to

  1008. him and trust

  1009. in him, he

  1010. is able to

  1011. do far more

  1012. than we can

  1013. even imagine.

  1014. And so let

  1015. us keep

  1016. praying.

  1017. Let us keep

  1018. praising God,

  1019. just like Paul

  1020. and Silas here

  1021. in prison,

  1022. that God would

  1023. work in us

  1024. and through

  1025. us for

  1026. his glory.

  1027. Remembering

  1028. God's

  1029. saving

  1030. power.

  1031. So what we

  1032. see in this

  1033. section of

  1034. Acts in

  1035. chapter 16

  1036. is a powerful

  1037. passage about

  1038. conversion

  1039. and the number

  1040. of people that

  1041. God was at

  1042. work in,

  1043. in very

  1044. different

  1045. circumstances.

  1046. You have

  1047. Lydia,

  1048. you have this

  1049. young slave

  1050. girl,

  1051. you have the

  1052. Philippian

  1053. jailer,

  1054. very different

  1055. circumstances

  1056. and yet God's

  1057. transforming power

  1058. seen in all

  1059. their lives.

  1060. It's always

  1061. great to hear

  1062. someone's

  1063. testimony,

  1064. someone's story

  1065. about the way

  1066. God worked

  1067. in their life,

  1068. brought them

  1069. to see and

  1070. have their eyes

  1071. opened to the

  1072. wonder of

  1073. Jesus.

  1074. And there are

  1075. many conversions

  1076. you see and

  1077. they're maybe

  1078. not surprised

  1079. to us,

  1080. but there are

  1081. others that

  1082. are complete

  1083. surprised to us.

  1084. We didn't see

  1085. it coming,

  1086. but that's how

  1087. God works.

  1088. He works in

  1089. everyone's lives

  1090. in different

  1091. ways.

  1092. And the Bible

  1093. is full of

  1094. maybe surprising

  1095. conversions in

  1096. our eyes.

  1097. You think of

  1098. Paul himself,

  1099. his conversion

  1100. story is told

  1101. in the book

  1102. on Acts

  1103. on three

  1104. occasions.

  1105. In chapter

  1106. nine you can

  1107. read about it.

  1108. Saul who

  1109. persecuted

  1110. Christians,

  1111. people were

  1112. afraid of

  1113. him and

  1114. yet God

  1115. powerfully

  1116. transformed

  1117. his life.

  1118. Another one

  1119. is Cornelius

  1120. who we read

  1121. of just

  1122. previous to

  1123. this in the

  1124. book of Acts.

  1125. Again,

  1126. God worked

  1127. powerfully

  1128. in his

  1129. life.

  1130. Lydia,

  1131. here we are

  1132. told that

  1133. the Lord

  1134. opened her

  1135. heart.

  1136. The slave

  1137. girl,

  1138. she was in

  1139. bondage

  1140. through

  1141. spirits of

  1142. divination,

  1143. a fortune

  1144. teller,

  1145. yet God

  1146. set her

  1147. free.

  1148. And the

  1149. Philippian

  1150. jailer,

  1151. as we will

  1152. see,

  1153. someone who

  1154. was a

  1155. hard man

  1156. in so many

  1157. ways and

  1158. yet brought

  1159. to that

  1160. point of

  1161. bowing

  1162. before God.

  1163. What must

  1164. I do

  1165. to be

  1166. saved?

  1167. Conversions

  1168. are wonderful

  1169. things.

  1170. You just

  1171. have to

  1172. read through

  1173. Hebrews

  1174. 11,

  1175. and there

  1176. you see

  1177. a list

  1178. of people

  1179. who God

  1180. worked

  1181. powerfully

  1182. in their

  1183. lives.

  1184. People

  1185. of all

  1186. kinds of

  1187. different

  1188. backgrounds,

  1189. all kinds

  1190. of different

  1191. issues in

  1192. their lives,

  1193. and yet God

  1194. worked

  1195. powerfully

  1196. in them

  1197. and then

  1198. through

  1199. them.

  1200. The gospel

  1201. is powerful,

  1202. and the

  1203. gospel

  1204. calls for

  1205. a response.

  1206. And what

  1207. this chapter,

  1208. chapter 16,

  1209. reminds us

  1210. of is the

  1211. wonder of

  1212. God's

  1213. grace.

  1214. The wonder

  1215. of God's

  1216. grace towards

  1217. all people,

  1218. men and

  1219. women,

  1220. boys and

  1221. girls.

  1222. God calls

  1223. on us all

  1224. to come

  1225. to him.

  1226. It's this

  1227. grace that

  1228. is at work

  1229. in all

  1230. of these

  1231. lives.

  1232. The grace

  1233. of Lydia,

  1234. a business

  1235. woman of

  1236. great means.

  1237. She would

  1238. have been

  1239. rich,

  1240. a seller

  1241. of purple,

  1242. of good

  1243. standing in

  1244. her town,

  1245. in her city.

  1246. And we see

  1247. that she was

  1248. one who

  1249. met for

  1250. prayer.

  1251. In verse

  1252. 13 of this

  1253. chapter,

  1254. it says,

  1255. on the

  1256. Sabbath day,

  1257. we went

  1258. outside the

  1259. gate to

  1260. the riverside.

  1261. We supposed

  1262. there was a

  1263. place of

  1264. prayer.

  1265. So they

  1266. went,

  1267. and one

  1268. who heard

  1269. us was

  1270. a woman

  1271. named

  1272. Lydia.

  1273. The Lord

  1274. opened her

  1275. heart to

  1276. pay attention.

  1277. Again,

  1278. it's just

  1279. this powerful

  1280. way that

  1281. God works.

  1282. Just there

  1283. and then in

  1284. that moment,

  1285. the Lord

  1286. opened her

  1287. heart.

  1288. And maybe

  1289. you've come

  1290. in here today

  1291. and your

  1292. heart has

  1293. been hard.

  1294. You have

  1295. come in

  1296. here today.

  1297. You're not

  1298. really listening

  1299. to what

  1300. God is

  1301. saying to

  1302. you.

  1303. But in

  1304. a moment,

  1305. the Lord

  1306. can open

  1307. your heart.

  1308. That is

  1309. the power

  1310. that he

  1311. has.

  1312. That's

  1313. the power

  1314. that encourages

  1315. us as

  1316. preachers,

  1317. as Christians,

  1318. that we

  1319. don't lose

  1320. hope because

  1321. God's word

  1322. is powerful

  1323. to open

  1324. hearts.

  1325. Open hearts

  1326. of maybe

  1327. those we've

  1328. prayed for

  1329. over many

  1330. years.

  1331. Maybe we're

  1332. losing hope

  1333. of that

  1334. sense of

  1335. will they

  1336. ever be

  1337. converted.

  1338. And yet

  1339. this reminds

  1340. us that

  1341. it's the

  1342. Lord who

  1343. can just

  1344. open a

  1345. heart in

  1346. a moment.

  1347. In the

  1348. same way

  1349. as the

  1350. slave girl

  1351. too.

  1352. She was

  1353. caught up

  1354. in this

  1355. world where

  1356. she was

  1357. at the

  1358. hands of

  1359. her master.

  1360. She was

  1361. a slave

  1362. girl who

  1363. had a

  1364. spirit of

  1365. divination.

  1366. And yet

  1367. in a

  1368. word,

  1369. her life

  1370. is

  1371. transformed.

  1372. Her

  1373. life

  1374. is

  1375. changed.

  1376. The

  1377. God of

  1378. grace

  1379. can set

  1380. anybody

  1381. free.

  1382. From

  1383. any

  1384. bondage,

  1385. any

  1386. slavery

  1387. that we're

  1388. caught up

  1389. in,

  1390. God can

  1391. set us

  1392. free.

  1393. Why is

  1394. that?

  1395. Because

  1396. with God

  1397. it is

  1398. possible.

  1399. In

  1400. Matthew

    Matthew 19:26

  1401. 19

  1402. verse

  1403. 26,

  1404. Jesus

  1405. looked at

  1406. his

  1407. disciples

  1408. and said

  1409. to them,

  1410. with man

  1411. this is

  1412. impossible,

  1413. but with

  1414. God all

  1415. things are

  1416. possible.

  1417. And what

  1418. was the

  1419. context?

  1420. Salvation.

  1421. The

  1422. question was

  1423. asked,

  1424. how can

  1425. the rich

  1426. be saved?

  1427. And

  1428. Jesus

  1429. said to

  1430. them,

  1431. it seems

  1432. impossible

  1433. to you,

  1434. but with

  1435. God all

  1436. things are

  1437. possible.

  1438. And that's

  1439. a reminder

  1440. to us of

  1441. the power

  1442. of God's

  1443. word.

  1444. That he

  1445. is able

  1446. to save,

  1447. he is able

  1448. to convert.

  1449. And we

  1450. don't lose

  1451. hope because

  1452. he is able

  1453. to do

  1454. that.

  1455. And that's

  1456. what we

  1457. see when

  1458. we come

  1459. to the

  1460. Philippian

  1461. jailer.

  1462. In this

  1463. section from

  1464. verse 25,

  1465. where we

  1466. see Paul

  1467. and Silas

  1468. in prison,

  1469. we want

  1470. to see

  1471. just two

  1472. things from

  1473. this section.

  1474. First,

  1475. we see

  1476. the question

  1477. that the

  1478. jailer has.

  1479. And then

  1480. we see

  1481. the response

  1482. of Paul

  1483. and Silas.

  1484. The jailer

  1485. was given

  1486. orders to

  1487. guard these

  1488. men.

  1489. In verse 24,

  1490. having received

  1491. this order,

  1492. he put them

  1493. into the

  1494. inner prison

  1495. and fastened

  1496. their feet

  1497. in the

  1498. stocks.

  1499. They were

  1500. put in

  1501. the most

  1502. secure

  1503. part of

  1504. the prison.

  1505. And this

  1506. man was

  1507. put in

  1508. charge of

  1509. looking after

  1510. them.

  1511. But

  1512. something

  1513. remarkable

  1514. was about

  1515. to happen.

  1516. Paul and

  1517. Silas could

  1518. have been

  1519. sitting there

  1520. thinking,

  1521. what's next

  1522. for us?

  1523. What's

  1524. going to

  1525. happen?

  1526. They could

  1527. have lost

  1528. heart in

  1529. it all.

  1530. But look

  1531. at what it

  1532. says in

  1533. verse 25.

  1534. About

  1535. midnight,

  1536. Paul and

  1537. Silas were

  1538. praying and

  1539. singing hymns

  1540. to God.

  1541. and the

  1542. prisoners

  1543. were listening

  1544. to them.

  1545. Here they

  1546. were,

  1547. they weren't

  1548. losing hope,

  1549. they weren't

  1550. losing heart

  1551. in the midst

  1552. of all the

  1553. badness that

  1554. was around

  1555. them and

  1556. all the bad

  1557. things that

  1558. were happening

  1559. to them.

  1560. They were

  1561. confident in

  1562. God.

  1563. They were

  1564. rejoicing in

  1565. him, they

  1566. were praying

  1567. and singing

  1568. hymns to

  1569. God.

  1570. and they

  1571. were those

  1572. who were

  1573. beside them

  1574. listening to

  1575. them,

  1576. listening to

  1577. them as

  1578. they praised

  1579. God and

  1580. as they

  1581. sang to

  1582. him.

  1583. And in

  1584. the midst

  1585. of this

  1586. there's an

  1587. earthquake.

  1588. The foundation

  1589. of the prison

  1590. is shaken

  1591. and everything

  1592. just seems to

  1593. change in a

  1594. moment.

  1595. They're free

  1596. to go

  1597. and yet

  1598. they don't.

  1599. And the

  1600. Philippian

  1601. jailer in

  1602. all his

  1603. fear, in

  1604. all his

  1605. terror,

  1606. here, he's

  1607. in danger

  1608. of losing

  1609. his life.

  1610. If these

  1611. prisoners get

  1612. away, his

  1613. life would be

  1614. taken.

  1615. That's the

  1616. way it

  1617. worked with

  1618. the Roman

  1619. soldiers in

  1620. those days.

  1621. But what

  1622. happens?

  1623. Well we

  1624. have this

  1625. dramatic

  1626. conversion of

  1627. the Philippian

  1628. jailer.

  1629. He fell

  1630. down before

  1631. Paul and

  1632. Silas.

  1633. Then he

  1634. brought them

  1635. out and

  1636. said,

  1637. Serge,

  1638. what must

  1639. I do

  1640. to be

  1641. saved?

  1642. Isn't

  1643. that a

  1644. wonderful

  1645. question?

  1646. Is that

  1647. a question

  1648. that you

  1649. have today?

  1650. Sir,

  1651. what must

  1652. I do

  1653. to be

  1654. saved?

  1655. What

  1656. provokes

  1657. this question

  1658. in the

  1659. Philippian

  1660. jailer?

  1661. Is it

  1662. fear?

  1663. Maybe a

  1664. little,

  1665. but fear

  1666. of what?

  1667. Is it

  1668. a fear

  1669. of

  1670. retribution

  1671. at the

  1672. hand of

  1673. his

  1674. masters?

  1675. Or is

  1676. it more

  1677. a fear

  1678. of God?

  1679. You

  1680. know when

  1681. Paul and

  1682. Silas were

  1683. praying and

  1684. singing,

  1685. the prisoners

  1686. heard it.

  1687. And you

  1688. wonder if

  1689. the Philippian

  1690. jailer

  1691. heard it

  1692. too.

  1693. His life

  1694. was about

  1695. to be

  1696. transformed.

  1697. transformed.

  1698. A life

  1699. that perhaps

  1700. had no

  1701. thought for

  1702. God until

  1703. this very

  1704. moment on

  1705. this night.

  1706. And this

  1707. was a man

  1708. who would

  1709. have seen

  1710. so much.

  1711. A Roman

  1712. soldier,

  1713. a jailer,

  1714. he would

  1715. have seen

  1716. so many

  1717. things in

  1718. life,

  1719. so many

  1720. hard things,

  1721. so many

  1722. wicked

  1723. things.

  1724. Perhaps he

  1725. was involved

  1726. in things

  1727. himself that

  1728. is now

  1729. weighing heavy

  1730. on his

  1731. heart.

  1732. He knows

  1733. he has done

  1734. wrong as so

  1735. many of us

  1736. do.

  1737. He knows

  1738. there are

  1739. things missing

  1740. in his

  1741. life as so

  1742. many of

  1743. us do.

  1744. But it

  1745. leads him

  1746. to this

  1747. question.

  1748. What must

  1749. I do

  1750. to be

  1751. saved?

  1752. Is that

  1753. the question

  1754. that is

  1755. eating away

  1756. at you?

  1757. And you're

  1758. thinking of

  1759. your own

  1760. life,

  1761. your own

  1762. situation,

  1763. the way

  1764. you've

  1765. responded to

  1766. God in

  1767. the past,

  1768. the way

  1769. you've

  1770. treated

  1771. God's

  1772. people in

  1773. the past,

  1774. the way

  1775. you've

  1776. lived your

  1777. life in

  1778. general up

  1779. to this

  1780. point,

  1781. and yet

  1782. God is

  1783. speaking to

  1784. you.

  1785. And maybe

  1786. this is the

  1787. burning question

  1788. that you have

  1789. in your

  1790. heart.

  1791. What must

  1792. I do

  1793. to be

  1794. saved?

  1795. Don't just

  1796. push that

  1797. question

  1798. away.

  1799. God is

  1800. going to

  1801. take you

  1802. to be

  1803. busy at

  1804. times and

  1805. you've

  1806. just got

  1807. a list

  1808. of things

  1809. that you

  1810. need to

  1811. get through.

  1812. but maybe

  1813. God is

  1814. just bringing

  1815. you to

  1816. a shuddering

  1817. halt like

  1818. this jailer.

  1819. You hadn't

  1820. expected any

  1821. of this to

  1822. happen.

  1823. An earthquake,

  1824. the prisoners

  1825. getting free,

  1826. his own life

  1827. in danger.

  1828. It had

  1829. happened so

  1830. quickly as

  1831. our lives

  1832. can often

  1833. be.

  1834. But it

  1835. leads to

  1836. this question,

  1837. what must

  1838. I do

  1839. to be

  1840. saved?

  1841. Stop

  1842. and ask

  1843. that question.

  1844. Am I

  1845. saved?

  1846. If not,

  1847. what must

  1848. I do

  1849. to be

  1850. saved?

  1851. Well,

  1852. the other

  1853. thing we

  1854. see in

  1855. this passage,

  1856. we see

  1857. the question,

  1858. but then

  1859. we see

  1860. the response.

  1861. The response

  1862. of Paul

  1863. and Silas

  1864. in verse

  1865. 31,

  1866. they said,

  1867. believe,

  1868. in the

  1869. Lord Jesus

  1870. and you

  1871. will be

  1872. saved,

  1873. you and

  1874. your

  1875. household.

  1876. And they

  1877. spoke the

  1878. word of

  1879. the Lord

  1880. to him.

  1881. The word

  1882. of the

  1883. Lord was

  1884. spoken to

  1885. him.

  1886. The word

  1887. of the

  1888. Lord is

  1889. powerful

  1890. and mighty

  1891. to save.

  1892. And this

  1893. is the

  1894. gospel.

  1895. You have

  1896. the question,

  1897. what must

  1898. I do

  1899. to be

  1900. saved?

  1901. And we

  1902. can

  1903. over

  1904. complicate

  1905. it so

  1906. much.

  1907. But the

  1908. simple

  1909. answer is

  1910. here before

  1911. us.

  1912. Believe

  1913. in the

  1914. Lord Jesus

  1915. and you

  1916. will

  1917. be saved.

  1918. Now,

  1919. the response

  1920. of Paul

  1921. and Silas

  1922. could have

  1923. been so

  1924. different here.

  1925. They had

  1926. been beaten

  1927. by this

  1928. man.

  1929. They had

  1930. been put

  1931. into the

  1932. innermost

  1933. part of

  1934. the prison

  1935. and put

  1936. their feet

  1937. in stalks

  1938. to this

  1939. man.

  1940. They could

  1941. have easily

  1942. turned and

  1943. say,

  1944. you deserve

  1945. nothing.

  1946. And grace,

  1947. no chance.

  1948. But what

  1949. they do is

  1950. they point

  1951. him to

  1952. the gospel.

  1953. And thanks

  1954. be to God

  1955. that he

  1956. doesn't

  1957. treat us

  1958. as we

  1959. deserve.

  1960. That he

  1961. doesn't turn

  1962. to us and

  1963. say, you

  1964. don't

  1965. deserve,

  1966. mercy.

  1967. You

  1968. don't

  1969. deserve

  1970. grace.

  1971. He

  1972. could,

  1973. but he

  1974. doesn't.

  1975. Instead,

  1976. he gave

  1977. his own

  1978. son for

  1979. us.

  1980. He showed

  1981. his love

  1982. by sending

  1983. his son

  1984. into this

  1985. world to

  1986. die on

  1987. a cross

  1988. for his

  1989. people.

  1990. He bore

  1991. our sins.

  1992. He bore

  1993. the punishment

  1994. that we

  1995. deserved.

  1996. He showed

  1997. grace when

  1998. we didn't

  1999. deserve it.

  2000. And that's

  2001. what Paul

  2002. and Silas

  2003. remind us

  2004. of here.

  2005. If someone

  2006. comes to

  2007. us who's

  2008. mistreated

  2009. us,

  2010. our natural

  2011. response is

  2012. to want

  2013. harm for

  2014. them,

  2015. not good.

  2016. But our

  2017. ultimate desire

  2018. should be

  2019. their salvation,

  2020. that God

  2021. would have

  2022. mercy on

  2023. their soul,

  2024. that they

  2025. too would

  2026. come and

  2027. believe in

  2028. the Lord

  2029. Jesus Christ.

  2030. In the

  2031. midst of

  2032. tribulation,

  2033. in the

  2034. midst of

  2035. hardship,

  2036. here,

  2037. Paul and

  2038. Silas find

  2039. an opportunity

  2040. to be used

  2041. by God

  2042. to lead

  2043. someone to

  2044. salvation.

  2045. Isn't that

  2046. wonderful?

  2047. And how

  2048. often do we

  2049. hear Paul

  2050. reminding us

  2051. that it's

  2052. rejoicing in

  2053. tribulation?

  2054. salvation.

  2055. You see it

  2056. so often in

  2057. Paul's life

  2058. and others

  2059. life in

  2060. the Scripture,

  2061. it's through

  2062. their hardships,

  2063. through their

  2064. suffering,

  2065. that they see

  2066. the greatest

  2067. glory being

  2068. given to

  2069. God.

  2070. And we

  2071. have to

  2072. understand that

  2073. too, that

  2074. sometimes it's

  2075. in our greatest

  2076. tribulation that

  2077. God is working

  2078. most powerfully,

  2079. whether it's in

  2080. us or through

  2081. us for someone

  2082. else, that we

  2083. are reminded of

  2084. the power of

  2085. God to save.

  2086. Faith in

  2087. God makes us

  2088. great optimists,

  2089. somebody once

  2090. said.

  2091. And that's

  2092. what we are

  2093. guided to here,

  2094. believe in

  2095. the Lord Jesus

  2096. Christ and

  2097. you will be

  2098. saved.

  2099. The

  2100. missionary

  2101. Adoniram

  2102. Judson, he

  2103. was a

  2104. missionary in

  2105. Burma in

  2106. the 1800s,

  2107. and it was

  2108. a very

  2109. difficult

  2110. place.

  2111. And yet

  2112. over a

  2113. number of

  2114. years, he

  2115. saw a few

  2116. converted.

  2117. But he was

  2118. always optimistic.

  2119. He knew

  2120. that's where

  2121. God wanted

  2122. him.

  2123. Even though

  2124. things seemed

  2125. so dark and

  2126. difficult, even

  2127. at a time when

  2128. he ended up in

  2129. prison, he

  2130. still held on

  2131. to the hope

  2132. and the power

  2133. of the gospel.

  2134. He spent

  2135. over 20

  2136. months in

  2137. prison at

  2138. one stage.

  2139. And during

  2140. his time

  2141. in prison,

  2142. as he was

  2143. chained beside

  2144. other prisoners,

  2145. one prisoner

  2146. turned to

  2147. him, smirking

  2148. and sneering

  2149. at him.

  2150. And he

  2151. said,

  2152. Dr.

  2153. Judson,

  2154. what about

  2155. the prospect

  2156. of conversion

  2157. of the

  2158. heathen

  2159. now?

  2160. Dr.

  2161. Judson

  2162. replied

  2163. instantly.

  2164. He said,

  2165. the prospects

  2166. are just

  2167. as bright

  2168. as the

  2169. promises

  2170. of God.

  2171. And that

  2172. is our

  2173. hope in

  2174. the gospel.

  2175. We don't

  2176. lose hope

  2177. because the

  2178. prospects

  2179. today are

  2180. just as

  2181. bright as

  2182. the promises

  2183. of God.

  2184. That is what

  2185. the power of

  2186. the gospel

  2187. reminds us

  2188. of.

  2189. There is

  2190. salvation

  2191. in no one

  2192. else,

  2193. but in

  2194. the Lord

  2195. Jesus Christ.

  2196. And that

  2197. is what we

  2198. are guided

  2199. to here.

  2200. We have

  2201. the question,

  2202. what must

  2203. I do

  2204. to be

  2205. saved?

  2206. The answer

  2207. is clear

  2208. and simple.

  2209. Believe

  2210. in the

  2211. Lord Jesus

  2212. and you

  2213. will be

  2214. saved.

  2215. And the

  2216. word saved

  2217. here is

  2218. full of

  2219. God's

  2220. promise.

  2221. It means

  2222. to be

  2223. rescued

  2224. from all

  2225. harm and

  2226. danger

  2227. and to

  2228. be kept

  2229. safe

  2230. and sound.

  2231. To be

  2232. rescued

  2233. from all

  2234. harm and

  2235. danger

  2236. and kept

  2237. safe

  2238. and sound.

  2239. And that

  2240. is what the

  2241. Philippian

  2242. jailer came

  2243. to know.

  2244. That is what

  2245. the young

  2246. slave girl

  2247. came to

  2248. know.

  2249. That is what

  2250. Lydia came

  2251. to know.

  2252. by the

  2253. grace of

  2254. God.

  2255. What must

  2256. I do

  2257. to be

  2258. saved

  2259. today?

  2260. Believe

  2261. in the

  2262. Lord Jesus

  2263. and you

  2264. will be

  2265. saved.

  2266. You will

  2267. be rescued

  2268. from all

  2269. harm and

  2270. danger

  2271. and you

  2272. will be

  2273. kept

  2274. safe

  2275. and sound.

  2276. God

  2277. God

  2278. said to

  2279. God

  2280. God

  2281. says to

  2282. us

  2283. for this

  2284. is the

  2285. will of

  2286. my

  2287. father

  2288. that

  2289. everyone

  2290. who

  2291. looks

  2292. on the

  2293. son

  2294. and

  2295. believes

  2296. in

  2297. him

  2298. should

  2299. have

  2300. eternal

  2301. life

  2302. and I

  2303. will

  2304. raise

  2305. him

  2306. up

  2307. on the

  2308. last

  2309. day.

  2310. That

  2311. is the

  2312. security

  2313. of

  2314. Christ.

  2315. The

  2316. salvation

  2317. that we

  2318. have

  2319. in

  2320. Christ

  2321. as we

  2322. believe

  2323. in

  2324. him.

  2325. Do you

  2326. have that

  2327. question

  2328. today?

  2329. What

  2330. must

  2331. I do

  2332. to be

  2333. saved?

  2334. Is it

  2335. burning

  2336. in your

  2337. heart?

  2338. Is it

  2339. troubling

  2340. you?

  2341. Is it

  2342. keeping you

  2343. awake at

  2344. night?

  2345. What

  2346. must I

  2347. do

  2348. to be

  2349. saved?

  2350. Here is

  2351. the answer.

  2352. believe

  2353. in the

  2354. Lord

  2355. Jesus

  2356. and you

  2357. will

  2358. be

  2359. saved.

  2360. God

  2361. can open

  2362. our hearts

  2363. in an

  2364. instant

  2365. and give

  2366. us

  2367. his

  2368. peace

  2369. of that

  2370. salvation

  2371. and that

  2372. security.

  2373. If you

  2374. have that

  2375. question

  2376. don't let

  2377. it go.

  2378. Don't push

  2379. it away

  2380. but plead

  2381. with the

  2382. Lord Jesus

  2383. for mercy.

  2384. come to

  2385. him.

  2386. Believe

  2387. in him

  2388. and know

  2389. this great

  2390. assurance of

  2391. security

  2392. and salvation

  2393. with him.

  2394. What

  2395. must I

  2396. do?

  2397. Believe

  2398. in the

  2399. Lord Jesus.

  2400. Let us

  2401. pray.

  2402. Lord

  2403. our God

  2404. our

  2405. Father

  2406. in heaven

  2407. we

  2408. thank you

  2409. that

  2410. your

  2411. word

  2412. is

  2413. powerful

  2414. that

  2415. your

  2416. word

  2417. is

  2418. sharper

  2419. than

  2420. any

  2421. two

  2422. edged

  2423. sword

  2424. that

  2425. is

  2426. a

  2427. power

  2428. to

  2429. cut

  2430. us

  2431. right

  2432. to

  2433. the

  2434. heart

  2435. and

  2436. we

  2437. pray

  2438. today

  2439. Lord

  2440. that

  2441. you

  2442. will

  2443. bring

  2444. that

  2445. word

  2446. of

  2447. power

  2448. to

  2449. us

  2450. that

  2451. we

  2452. will

  2453. know

  2454. it

  2455. not

  2456. in a

  2457. way

  2458. that

  2459. just

  2460. rebukes

  2461. us

  2462. and

  2463. makes

  2464. us

  2465. feel

  2466. cast

  2467. down

  2468. but

  2469. in a

  2470. way

  2471. that

  2472. lifts

  2473. us

  2474. up

  2475. a

  2476. way

  2477. that

  2478. reminds

  2479. us

  2480. that

  2481. we

  2482. can

  2483. come

  2484. to

  2485. you

  2486. a

  2487. way

  2488. that

  2489. we

  2490. can

  2491. approach

  2492. with

  2493. all

  2494. our

  2495. questions

  2496. and

  2497. find

  2498. in

  2499. you

  2500. all

  2501. the

  2502. answers

  2503. that

  2504. we

  2505. need

  2506. and

  2507. if

  2508. we

  2509. have

  2510. that

  2511. lack

  2512. of

  2513. assurance

  2514. we

  2515. have

  2516. the

  2517. doubt

  2518. that

  2519. we

  2520. are

  2521. deserving

  2522. of

  2523. your

  2524. mercy

  2525. and

  2526. grace

  2527. we

  2528. thank

  2529. you

  2530. that

  2531. your

  2532. word

  2533. reminds

  2534. us

  2535. that

  2536. though

  2537. we

  2538. are

  2539. not

  2540. yet

  2541. you

  2542. give

  2543. it

  2544. freely

  2545. and

  2546. that

  2547. we

  2548. are

  2549. commanded

  2550. that

  2551. we

  2552. are

  2553. might

  2554. know

  2555. his

  2556. great

  2557. salvation

  2558. help

  2559. us

  2560. to

  2561. find

  2562. that

  2563. peace

  2564. as

  2565. we

  2566. seek

  2567. for

  2568. it

  2569. as

  2570. we

  2571. ask

  2572. it

  2573. in

  2574. Jesus

  2575. name

  2576. Amen

  2577. we're

  2578. going to

  2579. conclude

  2580. by singing

  2581. again

  2582. in

  2583. Psalm

  2584. 80

  2585. Psalm

  2586. 80

  2587. page

  2588. 107

  2589. of the

  2590. psalm

  2591. book

  2592. verse

  2593. 17

  2594. down

  2595. to

  2596. the

  2597. end

  2598. of

  2599. the

  2600. psalm

  2601. let

  2602. your

  2603. hand

  2604. be

  2605. placed

  2606. in

  2607. blessing

  2608. on

  2609. the

  2610. man

  2611. at

  2612. your

  2613. right

  2614. hand

  2615. on

  2616. the

  2617. son

  2618. of

  2619. man

  2620. you've

  2621. chosen

  2622. whom

  2623. alone

  2624. you

  2625. caused

  2626. to

  2627. stand

  2628. then

  2629. we

  2630. will

  2631. not

  2632. wander

  2633. from

  2634. you

  2635. turning

  2636. from

  2637. you

  2638. to

  2639. our

  2640. shame

  2641. strengthen

  2642. us

  2643. revive

  2644. and

  2645. heal

  2646. us

  2647. then

  2648. we'll

  2649. call

  2650. upon

  2651. your

  2652. name

  2653. look

  2654. on

  2655. us

  2656. Lord

  2657. God

  2658. almighty

  2659. let

  2660. us

  2661. see

  2662. your

  2663. glory

  2664. bright

  2665. turn

  2666. us

  2667. once

  2668. again

  2669. towards

  2670. you

  2671. come

  2672. and

  2673. save

  2674. us

  2675. give

  2676. us

  2677. light

  2678. we

  2679. stand

  2680. to sing

  2681. these

  2682. words

  2683. to

  2684. God's

  2685. praise

  2686. let

  2687. let

  2688. let

  2689. your

  2690. hand

  2691. be

  2692. placed

  2693. in

  2694. blessing

  2695. on

  2696. the

  2697. man

  2698. at

  2699. your
