  1. But we begin our worship by singing to God's praise in Psalm 46.

  2. In the Scottish Psalter version, Psalm 46, we're going to sing from verse 1 to verse 7, page 271 of the psalm book, the tune is Strathcathro.

  3. It's a psalm I'm sure we know very well, but it's often good to again to remind ourselves of God as our refuge and our strength,

  4. even when troubles arise and so much goes on around us that we find our safety, our help in him.

  5. So we're going to sing from verse 1 to verse 7, God is our refuge and our strength.

  6. Amen.

  7. Amen.

  8. Amen.

  9. Amen.

  10. Amen.

  11. Amen.

  12. Amen.

  13. Amen.

  14. Amen.

  15. For although the air we live, we will not be afraid.

  16. Though hills and hills the seas becast, though waters roaring me, and troubled me,

  17. in all the hills, by swelling seas to shame.

  18. The river is to stream to cloud, the city of our God.

  19. The holy place where in the Lord was high and dear, God.

  20. God in the midst of the heart of dwell, nothing shall ever remove.

  21. The Lord to heart and ever will, and the uprightly blue.

  22. The deep and bridge to mount us free, the kingdom's new bled web.

  23. The Lord to come, the wicked's voice, the earth did melt for fear.

  24. The Lord of hosts upon our side, that constantly remain.

  25. The God of hosts upon our refuge, as safely to maintain.

  26. Let's come to God in prayer. Let us pray.

  27. Our gracious and eternal God, we come to you anew this evening hour.

  28. We come dependent upon you for all things.

  29. We come, O Lord, seeking your strength.

  30. We come seeking your presence with us and your blessing upon all that we do.

  31. In your name at this time, we thank you that we come opening up your word together.

  32. We come looking to your word and seeing what it has to say to us.

  33. And we are reminded even in these words that we've sung, words that we've probably sung many, many times together.

  34. Or in different situations with different people.

  35. And yet words that so often resonate with us.

  36. They speak to us, Lord, again and again as we see an ever-changing world around us.

  37. And yet we see and look to you as the unchanging God.

  38. The one who is always there.

  39. The one who is ever-present and unchanging and unchangeable.

  40. When we think of these words, the heathen rage tumultuously.

  41. The kingdoms move it well.

  42. And when we look at our world today and we see so much of the devastation that surrounds us, Lord.

  43. When we see kingdoms shaken by events.

  44. When we see a people shaken by atrocities all around us.

  45. We thank you that we can come to you.

  46. That you are the Lord who has uttered his voice to us in the midst of it all.

  47. You are the one who is speaking to us each and every day and each and every event.

  48. And we pray, Lord, that you will help us to hear your voice.

  49. And help many people in this world to hear.

  50. But to heed your voice as well.

  51. Not to turn away from it.

  52. And not to ignore it.

  53. Not to dismiss it and to mock it.

  54. But to look to you.

  55. For we need you, Lord.

  56. We need you in so many different ways.

  57. We need your help.

  58. We need, oh Lord, your nearness to us.

  59. We need that hope that you are able to give us.

  60. That you gave your people even long ago.

  61. The psalm here reminds us that you were Jacob's refuge.

  62. And we thank you that you are our refuge too.

  63. And so we pray, Lord, that near and far as your people.

  64. Even as people gather for worship in this evening hour.

  65. Even as people have worshipped you throughout this day.

  66. Throughout the world.

  67. We thank you, Lord, that you are the God who hears.

  68. And is able to answer prayer.

  69. And so we commit, oh Lord, ourselves into your hands.

  70. And all your people.

  71. We thank you that you are our God.

  72. And there is no other.

  73. And so, Lord, we come humbly before you.

  74. Thankful for all that is ours in Christ Jesus.

  75. That we are reminded that no matter the troubles of this world.

  76. No matter what comes our way.

  77. That our ultimate, our greatest security is in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

  78. And help us, Lord, that we will find our refuge and our strength in him.

  79. We pray, oh Lord, and ask for your goodness to us as a people here.

  80. We thank you that we are reminded in your word that your kingdom comes.

  81. That you are building your church.

  82. And as we continue, oh Lord, our study in the book of Nehemiah.

  83. As we again turn to it this evening and open it up.

  84. We pray, Lord, that you will still us in your presence.

  85. That you will help us to hear and to understand what you are saying to us.

  86. Help us as preacher and hearers alike, oh Lord, to approach your word prayerfully.

  87. And with a desire for it, Lord, to learn from it.

  88. To apply it to ourselves.

  89. Not just to see it as something from a distant past.

  90. Thousands of years ago.

  91. But something that is fresh and real for us today.

  92. Something that encourages us as well as challenges us today.

  93. Because we thank you that although the work is not the same in the sense of building the walls of Jerusalem.

  94. That in many ways we are still fulfilling your commission to us.

  95. To be your church.

  96. To be your people.

  97. And to seek the good of your name.

  98. The praise of your name.

  99. In our town.

  100. In our islands.

  101. In our lands.

  102. And all lands of the world.

  103. We thank you, Lord, for the great promise that you have given.

  104. That you will build your church.

  105. And that you will not allow the gates of hell to prevail against it.

  106. And help us, Lord, when we feel weak.

  107. When we feel discouraged.

  108. When we feel the opposition great.

  109. Even as we see in the day of Nehemiah.

  110. To know and trust in you as our Lord and as our God.

  111. So help us even in this coming week to go on in your strength.

  112. To do all for the glory of God.

  113. And for the good of your people.

  114. And for people all around us, Lord.

  115. We pray that you will help us and encourage us.

  116. And bind us together in the work of the gospel.

  117. That we would seek your good for all around us.

  118. We would see your blessing upon us.

  119. We thank you for the ministry of your word that takes place in so many different ways.

  120. We thank you for the times of public worship such as we have just now.

  121. And as we gather during the week for times of prayer and worship.

  122. But we thank you too for the quieter ways your work goes on.

  123. For individuals who take so much time to visit and to keep in touch with people.

  124. To look out for others.

  125. For so many people who help quietly in the background.

  126. Doing so many tasks, oh Lord.

  127. That maybe go unnoticed by many.

  128. But we thank you, Lord.

  129. That from all corners of our congregation.

  130. You are using your people.

  131. And we pray together that we be encouraged to give ourselves to the work.

  132. To encourage one another.

  133. To build one another up.

  134. To ask, oh Lord.

  135. What can we do in this place to help your cause?

  136. To commit ourselves to the Lord first and foremost.

  137. And then to commit each other to each other as well.

  138. We thank you, Lord.

  139. For your teaching and your word.

  140. That reminds us of what our priorities are to be.

  141. That we are to seek first the kingdom of God.

  142. And that then all other things will be added unto us.

  143. Give us wisdom, oh Lord.

  144. To apply these words to our lives and to our hearts.

  145. And we pray, oh Lord.

  146. For your church far and wide.

  147. That we thank you for a communion season in our midst.

  148. We pray for the services taking place today.

  149. Even this evening hour in Calanish and in Cross.

  150. And those who have been together there for our communion weekend.

  151. We pray there have been a blessed time.

  152. We pray for the upcoming week as well.

  153. For the congregation of Park.

  154. And for Reverend Ian McCritchie there.

  155. And the congregation as a whole.

  156. That we pray for visiting ministers.

  157. As they will have Reverend Paul Murray.

  158. And Reverend Ian Thompson over this coming weekend.

  159. And that you would bless the ministry of your word to them.

  160. To them all together.

  161. We thank you for encouragements in the congregation there.

  162. And we pray, oh Lord.

  163. To continue to see and to hear of great things happening throughout your church.

  164. Far and wide.

  165. We remember other ministries, Lord.

  166. Today as well.

  167. We are mindful of the congregation of Shabbos.

  168. Today as Reverend Calum MacLeod.

  169. Leads in his last services with them.

  170. As he comes to the time of retirement from the ministry.

  171. We pray for them that's gathered there this evening.

  172. We pray for Calum.

  173. And thank you for his ministry there over many years.

  174. And pray, oh Lord, that you will bless that ministry.

  175. Even in the days and months and years ahead.

  176. We pray, Lord, for him and his family.

  177. As he will soon be settling into retirement.

  178. But still with much to do in terms of his work for the Lord.

  179. Even especially in this week.

  180. Having been appointed as moderator to our denomination.

  181. For the next year.

  182. Taking place at the assembly in May.

  183. We thank you for that, Lord.

  184. And for the acknowledgement of his years of service in the church.

  185. We pray that you will continue to use him.

  186. And to bless him.

  187. And to uphold him.

  188. In his ongoing ministry in different ways.

  189. We pray for the congregation there as it becomes vacant.

  190. Lord, may you bless them.

  191. And guide them.

  192. And shepherd them throughout these days.

  193. And months ahead.

  194. We pray, Lord, for your provision.

  195. For a new ministry there in your time.

  196. And according to your will.

  197. We pray, oh Lord, now that you will continue with us.

  198. That you will help us to look to you.

  199. And to trust in you with all our heart.

  200. That you will build us up, oh Lord, in our faith.

  201. That you will encourage us in our hearts, oh Lord.

  202. And we thank you, Lord, for all that is ours in Christ.

  203. We thank you for a great salvation.

  204. And a great hope that we have in him.

  205. And we pray, Lord, that whatever comes our way.

  206. That you will always keep us looking to Jesus.

  207. The author and the perfecter of our faith.

  208. So hear our prayers, oh Lord.

  209. Continue with us in our time together.

  210. Bless us, we pray.

  211. And pardon our sin.

  212. As we ask it all in Jesus' precious name.

  213. Amen.

  214. So again, sing to God's praise.

  215. This time we'll sing in Psalm 127.

  216. In the Sing Psalms version.

  217. Page 171 of the psalm books.

  218. Psalm 127.

  219. We'll sing the whole of this psalm.

  220. The tune is Wiltshire.

  221. Page 171.

  222. Unless the Lord builds up the house,

  223. Its builders toil in vain.

  224. Unless he keeps the city safe,

  225. Then they vainly watch maintain.

  226. So we'll sing the whole of this psalm to God's praise.

  227. We stand to sing.

  228. Kung stolid, you are here in the kingdom of God is to live the hall.

  229. The elders toil in vain, unless he keeps the seldomly safe, they mainly won't maintain.

  230. In vain you rise before the dawn, and lift her skin with heat, that you may toil for food to eat.

  231. He gives his cup of sleep.

  232. Sons are a precious heritage, a blessing from the Lord.

  233. The children that are born to us are to lead his reward.

  234. Like an old sin, a warrior's hand, are children of one's youth.

  235. The man whose whippers full of them is blessed by God in truth.

  236. Such men will not be put to shame, but will not be their fate.

  237. When they content are yet to boast, who takes them in the gate.

  238. Amen.

  239. We can turn together to read now in the Old Testament in the book of Nehemiah.

  240. It's a continuous study in this book.

  241. We read in Nehemiah chapter 4.

    Nehemiah 4 chapter mention

  242. We can read the whole of this chapter in Nehemiah chapter 4.

    Nehemiah 4 chapter mention

  243. Reading from the beginning down to the end of the chapter.

  244. Now when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry and greatly enraged,

  245. and he jeered at the Jews. And he said in the presence of his brothers and of the army of

  246. Samaria, what are these feeble Jews doing? Will they restore it for themselves? Will they sacrifice?

  247. Will they finish in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish and burned ones

  248. at that? Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said, yes, what they are building, if a fox goes

  249. up on it, he will break down their stone wall. Hear, O our God, for we are despised. Turn back their taunt

  250. on their own heads and give them up to be plundered in a land where they are captives. Do not cover

  251. their guilt, and let not their sin be blotted out from your sight, for they have provoked you to anger

  252. in the presence of the builders. So we built the wall, and all the wall was joined together to half

  253. its height, for the people had a mind to work. But when Sanballat and Tobiah and the Arabs and the

  254. Ammonites and the Astrodites heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem was going forward,

  255. and that the breaches were beginning to be closed, they were very angry. And they all plotted together

  256. to come and fight against Jerusalem and to cause confusion in it. And we prayed to our God and set

  257. their guard as a protection against them day and night. In Judah it was said, the strength of those

  258. who bear the burdens is failing. There is too much rubble. By ourselves we will not be able to rebuild

  259. the wall. And our enemies said, they will not know or see till we come among them and kill them and stop

  260. the work. At that time the Jews who lived near them came from all directions and said to us ten times,

  261. you must return to us. So in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in open places, I stationed

  262. the people by their clans with their swords, their spears, and their bows. And I looked and arose and said

  263. to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, do not be afraid of them.

  264. Remember the Lord who is great and awesome and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters,

  265. your wives, and your homes. When our enemies heard that it was known to us and that God had frustrated

  266. their plan, we all returned to the wall, each to his work. From that day on, half of my servants worked

  267. on construction and half held the spears, shields, bows, and coats of mail. And the leaders stood behind

  268. the whole house of Judah, who were building on the wall. Those who carried burdens were loaded in such a

  269. way that each labored on the work with one hand and held his weapon with the other. And each of the

  270. builders had his sword strapped to his side while he built. The man who sounded the trumpet was beside me.

  271. And I said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, the work is great and

  272. widely spread, and we are separated on the wall far from one another. And the place where you hear the

  273. sound of the trumpet, rally to us there, our God will fight for us. So we labored at the work, and half of them

  274. held the spears from the break of dawn until the stars came out. I also said to the people at that time,

  275. let every man and his servant pass the night within Jerusalem, that they may be a guard for us by night

  276. and may labor by day. So neither I nor my brothers nor my servants nor the men of the guard who followed

  277. me, none of us took off our clothes, each kept his weapon at his right hand. Amen, and may God bless that

  278. reading from his word. Well, before we turn back to look at this passage, we'll sing again to God's praise,

  279. this time in Psalm 31 in the Scottish Psalter. We're singing from verse 13 down to verse 17,

  280. page 242 of the psalm book, Psalm 31.

  281. We sing from verse 13, the tune is Torwood.

  282. We see here a similar situation to what Nehemiah and the people were facing when there was

  283. slanderers all around them. Fear was in their midst, and there were those who were plotting against them

  284. in so many different ways. But verse 14 reminds us, but as for me, O Lord, my trust, upon thee I did lay,

  285. and I to thee, thou art my God, did confidently say. That we will be able to say these words for

  286. ourselves as well, that we can take confidence in the Lord. So we'll sing from verse 13 down to

  287. verse 17 to God's praise.

  288. Thank you.

  289. Thank you.

  290. Thank you.

  291. Thank you.

  292. Thank you.

  293. Let wicked men be shamed.

  294. Let them be silent in the grave.

  295. Amen.

  296. Well, we can turn back to our reading in Nehemiah chapter 4.

    Nehemiah 4 chapter mention

  297. We'll consider some of these sections before us here in this chapter together.

  298. If you read again with me at verse 10, we see there some of the discouragement that the people were facing.

  299. In Judah it was said, the strength of those who bear the burdens is failing.

  300. There is too much rubble by ourselves.

  301. We will not be able to rebuild the wall.

  302. Then we can read again at verse 14 as well, where Nehemiah speaks to the people and says,

  303. And I looked and arose and said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people,

  304. Do not be afraid of them.

  305. Remember the Lord who is great and awesome.

  306. And fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes.

  307. This chapter is a real mix of ups and downs in the midst of the work that Nehemiah had come back to Jerusalem to do

  308. and to encourage the people of Jerusalem to return to the work of rebuilding the walls that had been devastated.

  309. What we have seen of Nehemiah so far as we began our study in this book,

  310. we've seen him as one who was a servant for the king in Persia.

  311. Some 900 miles away from Jerusalem.

  312. He had been born in that place, born of parents who had been taken captive from Jerusalem

  313. when they had been conquered and taken captive.

  314. And Nehemiah had never seen Jerusalem for himself.

  315. But we see that as he was a cupbearer to the king in Persia,

  316. he heard news from Jerusalem, news that greatly troubled him.

  317. That Jerusalem was in disarray.

  318. And this led to him getting a confident vision of what the Lord wanted him to do.

  319. And so he returned to Jerusalem or came to Jerusalem, not returning.

  320. He came to Jerusalem, saw it for the first time himself and the devastation that there was,

  321. and yet was still encouraged and an encourager to the people to get on with the work of rebuilding the wall.

  322. But this was not without its challenges.

  323. Every step along the way, there was challenges as they got on with this work.

  324. But perhaps for ourselves, it's just important to think,

  325. what kind of task did Nehemiah face as he returned to Jerusalem?

  326. We've mentioned the rebuilding of the walls.

  327. But what kind of walls are we looking at here?

  328. What's the importance of these walls of Jerusalem?

  329. Well, it wasn't just a nice little block garden wall to protect the flowers or to protect the vegetable plot.

  330. That's not the kind of walls that he was returning to rebuild at all.

  331. Remember what it said in chapter 1, verse 3.

  332. They were given an insight as to the devastation of Jerusalem.

  333. It says there in verse 3,

  334. The remnant there in the province who had survived the exile is in great trouble and shame.

  335. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down and its gates are destroyed by fire.

  336. The walls of Jerusalem, walls of any city in those days, it had to be robust.

  337. It had to be large.

  338. It had to be strong in order to stand up against attacks from the enemies.

  339. It had to surround the city entirely.

  340. Just one breach in the wall could mean disaster for that city because the city would be conquered.

  341. And here is Jerusalem.

  342. There's no wall left all around it.

  343. So the enemy is free to come in and to go out.

  344. The people can't get on with their lives as they would wish.

  345. They're influenced by outside enemies all the time.

  346. And in order to be themselves once again, to be a people once again, they need these walls rebuilt.

  347. And the wall itself stretched around Jerusalem for about two miles length to get right around the city.

  348. The walls were, in some places, 12 meters high.

  349. Probably as high as the walls on the side of the church here.

  350. Two and a half meters thick, even thicker than these walls.

  351. So that the task wasn't small.

  352. If you think about it in our own situation here, it's like building a wall like that from the church here,

  353. up to the manse and plaster field, and back again.

  354. Who's up for that task?

  355. What would it be like to even just think of starting a work like that?

  356. It would just seem impossible in our eyes.

  357. And for a time, it seems like it may be impossible in the eyes of the people in Nehemiah's day.

  358. But what was at stake here with Nehemiah and the people of his day, it was more than just the security of the city.

  359. It was the worship of the Lord and the salvation of the Lord's people.

  360. That's what was at stake.

  361. And as we think ourselves today of how this applies to us,

  362. we're not going to start building a wall from here to plaster field and back.

  363. That's not what the Lord is calling us to.

  364. But we are involved, or we should be involved, in a building project that's even greater.

  365. To be involved in the kingdom work of God.

  366. Because God is building his church.

  367. Of that we are assured through his word.

  368. Until the day that he returns, he is building his church.

  369. And in order to build his church, he uses his people.

  370. We may not be building a physical wall,

  371. but he has commanded us in his word to the work of mission.

  372. To the work of building his kingdom.

  373. The Lord has told his church in the New Testament.

  374. He has commanded his church to go in the Great Commission.

  375. To go and make disciples of all nations.

  376. He has given his church through every generation today,

  377. before us and after us, that commission, that work,

  378. to be involved in.

  379. And as we think of that task,

  380. a little like it would be for those who are looking at Jerusalem in their day,

  381. when the walls were in ruin,

  382. it's a task that maybe seems beyond us.

  383. It's a task that maybe makes us feel overwhelmed in it all.

  384. How are we going to do this work?

  385. Where do we start?

  386. We just don't have the resources.

  387. We just have to maybe try and hold our own.

  388. Look after what we've got.

  389. But that's not the command of God's word.

  390. The command of God's word is not to stand still.

  391. The command of God's word is not to look after what we've got.

  392. The command is still the same.

  393. Go and make disciples of all nations,

  394. of all people,

  395. all around us,

  396. near and far.

  397. We still have that great commission.

  398. But what was happening in Nehemiah's day was,

  399. for the past 13 years or so,

  400. up till this point,

  401. Jerusalem had been at a standstill.

  402. All they were trying to do was just hold their own.

  403. The focus had been lost from looking to God

  404. and loving his people to just trying to survive day by day.

  405. There was no encouragement.

  406. There was no sense of joy.

  407. There was no sense of mission or vision for the people.

  408. It had been lost.

  409. But as we have seen in the opening chapter here,

  410. a simple question that Nehemiah asked

  411. changed his life upside down.

  412. When he asked that question,

  413. how are they in Jerusalem?

  414. And when he heard the disarray that they were in,

  415. the shame that was upon them,

  416. and the danger that they were in,

  417. it gave him this burden,

  418. that this vision was needed,

  419. that there was work to be done,

  420. that there was a renewed confidence in the Lord required.

  421. And that is what Nehemiah came to Jerusalem with.

  422. Realism as to the work,

  423. the enormity of it,

  424. but yet a passion,

  425. a passion to stir up a people to the work.

  426. And last week we saw that he arrived in Jerusalem.

  427. He had taken this journey,

  428. maybe taking about four months,

  429. to travel from Persia down to Jerusalem.

  430. And he arrived there.

  431. But he didn't immediately start with the work.

  432. He got his priorities right first.

  433. He spent a time, first of all, resting.

  434. It says for three days he was in Jerusalem.

  435. He rested for a time.

  436. But then he went out for himself to review the situation,

  437. to see what was actually had happened in Jerusalem

  438. and the devastation that there was.

  439. He saw for himself.

  440. But then he spoke to the people and said,

  441. it's a time to rise.

  442. It's a time for the work to go on.

  443. And in chapter three, we didn't read it,

  444. but it outlines those who were involved in the work.

  445. You can read through it in your own time.

  446. It's worth looking through.

  447. Again, it seems like a list of names of people,

  448. but they're always significant.

  449. And we'll see that as we go on this evening.

  450. But it just shows you those who were involved in the work

  451. and the huge task that was involved in rebuilding these walls.

  452. And they were enthused and they rose to the challenge.

  453. And initially things seem to be going well.

  454. But as is often the case,

  455. when things are going well in the Lord's work,

  456. what happens?

  457. Attacks come.

  458. Discouragements will come.

  459. But it's how do we deal with these things?

  460. That is the key.

  461. And that is what we want to take from chapter four this evening.

  462. How do we deal with these challenges?

  463. And how do we remain courageous in the work of the Lord?

  464. So I want us to think of four things from this chapter.

  465. First, conflict is inevitable.

  466. It's a sad thing to say, but conflict is inevitable.

  467. Secondly, we'll see discouragement is understandable.

  468. But then thirdly, we'll see keeping focused is crucial.

  469. And then fourthly, God is invincible.

  470. So I want to look at these four things from the chapter this evening.

  471. Firstly, conflict is inevitable.

  472. In chapter four, as we read here,

  473. we join with the people as the work is going on.

  474. The walls are being rebuilt.

  475. The people have engaged and they're enthused for it.

  476. But what we see is soon after the work's starting,

  477. that when God's people respond to the call to focus on God's work,

  478. the enemy will quickly rise up in opposition.

  479. And the enemy will use all kinds of means

  480. to put the work into disarray once again.

  481. But maybe the obvious question to ask is,

  482. where has this opposition been for the last number of years

  483. when the walls lay in ruin?

  484. Well, it's the opposition that has been keeping things down,

  485. not needing to do much.

  486. When people are discouraged,

  487. the devil doesn't have to do much to keep his people down.

  488. When they're discouraged, when they've got no vision,

  489. they're not doing anything.

  490. But as soon as Nehemiah arrives with this vision for this work,

  491. the enemy is on the case.

  492. The enemy is there.

  493. And isn't it so true to this day?

  494. Whenever we're involved in the Lord's work,

  495. whenever we feel a sense of encouragement,

  496. whenever we feel that good things are happening,

  497. the attacks come.

  498. The enemy attacks.

  499. It's always the case.

  500. The devil doesn't want the church to grow.

  501. The devil doesn't want the gospel to spread.

  502. The devil doesn't want people to be saved.

  503. So as soon as something good is happening,

  504. he becomes more active.

  505. You see it in the days of Ezra.

  506. The previous book to this.

  507. When Ezra came back,

  508. was involved in the work of rebuilding the temple at Jerusalem.

  509. There was chaos in the midst of that.

  510. There was confusion.

  511. There was discouragement in the midst of that.

  512. And Ezra says that this will be the case

  513. down through all the generations.

  514. So it's happening here in Nehemiah's day.

  515. And you see it right throughout the scriptures.

  516. Discouragements.

  517. Attacks always come.

  518. And so when we think of that ourselves,

  519. we see it happening again and again.

  520. Conflicts always arise

  521. when the work of the Lord is going on.

  522. And Jesus himself faced these conflicts too.

  523. When you look at the life of Jesus in this world,

  524. here in Nehemiah's day,

  525. you've got Sanballat and Tobiah.

  526. Their names keep appearing.

  527. When you look at Jesus' days,

  528. you've got the Pharisees and the Sadducees

  529. and all of those who were opposed to him.

  530. Again and again, he faces conflict from them.

  531. The enemy is attacking all the time.

  532. And there are times when the enemy seems to be victorious,

  533. when he's got on top of the people.

  534. That's what we see in verse 10 here.

  535. That's what you see when you look in the life of Christ

  536. and the cross especially.

  537. When he's crucified there,

  538. the people think,

  539. this is it, we've won.

  540. But as we're often reminded,

  541. Christ is victorious.

  542. And the cause of Christ will not be put down

  543. even in the midst of conflict.

  544. So we are reminded here

  545. that even as conflict comes,

  546. even though conflict is inevitable

  547. in so many ways,

  548. because Jesus reminds us in the Gospel of John,

    John 15 chapter mention

  549. chapter 15, he says,

  550. if the world hates you,

  551. know this, it has hated me first.

  552. We are reminded again and again

  553. that troubles will come.

  554. Tobias and Sambalat are here again.

  555. We hear them mentioned.

  556. And we're going to come back to them again,

  557. not this evening,

  558. but another time, God willing,

  559. and see how they keep appearing.

  560. We'll see it in chapter 6, God willing.

  561. There's opposition in so many ways.

  562. There's conflict in so many ways,

  563. inside, outside, from outside forces,

  564. but also from within.

  565. But tonight, the question is this.

  566. Do you want to be a builder or a wrecker?

  567. What side are you on?

  568. Are you seeking to be involved

  569. in the work of building the kingdom of God?

  570. Or are you seeking to tear it down?

  571. Surely, we are all builders.

  572. Surely, we would all long to be builders

  573. in the kingdom of God,

  574. but be on our guard,

  575. because it's easy to become a wrecker,

  576. easy to be someone who brings it down.

  577. There's a poem called this

  578. A Builder or a Wrecker,

  579. and it goes like this.

  580. As I watched them tear a building down,

  581. a gang of men in a busy town,

  582. with a ho, heave, ho, and a lusty yell,

  583. they swung a beam,

  584. and the side wall fell.

  585. I asked the foreman,

  586. are these men skilled,

  587. and the men you'd hire if you wanted to build?

  588. He gave a laugh and said,

  589. no, indeed, just common labor is all I need.

  590. I can easily wreck in a day or two

  591. what builders have taken years to do.

  592. And I thought to myself as I went on my way,

  593. which of these roles have I tried to play?

  594. Am I a builder who works with care,

  595. measuring life by rule and square?

  596. Am I shaping my work to a well-made plan,

  597. patiently doing the best I can?

  598. Or am I a wrecker who walks to town,

  599. content with the labor of tearing down?

  600. O Lord, let my life and my labors be

  601. that which will build for eternity.

  602. Are we builders or wreckers?

  603. The second thing we see here

  604. is that discouragement is understandable.

  605. As well as the opposition,

  606. they also faced times of discouragement

  607. when everything just seemed too much.

  608. Nehemiah 4, verse 10,

    Nehemiah 4:10

  609. is probably a low point in their experience here

  610. where it says there,

  611. the strength of those who bear the burdens is failing.

  612. There is too much rubble.

  613. By ourselves, we will not be able to rebuild the wall.

  614. It's understandable in so many ways.

  615. When you think of the picture of Jerusalem at this time

  616. and the walls,

  617. just a bunch of rubble lying around,

  618. even though the work had gone on

  619. to a fair degree at this point,

  620. there was still much to be discouraged about.

  621. So it's understandable

  622. that there was discouragement.

  623. It seemed that no matter how much they did,

  624. there just seemed to be more to do.

  625. And again, it maybe rings familiar to ourselves

  626. as well as a church.

  627. No matter how much we seem to do,

  628. there's always just so much more to be done.

  629. It feels like that.

  630. The task is never ending.

  631. But where does the real problem here lie?

  632. Well, when you look at it,

  633. it's not so much the circumstances that they're in,

  634. it's their attitude.

  635. Their attitude is being influenced

  636. by those enemies that have come alongside them,

  637. who are discouraging them.

  638. And because of that,

  639. they feel this way,

  640. that their focus is on themselves.

  641. Our strength is gone.

  642. There's too much to do.

  643. Where do we start?

  644. By ourselves,

  645. we're not able to rebuild this wall.

  646. So they're at this low point.

  647. And so often,

  648. that's the problem within ourselves too.

  649. It's when we begin to feel

  650. that sense of discouragement,

  651. that nothing's changing.

  652. Even whatever we do,

  653. it doesn't seem to make any impact

  654. in our town or among our people.

  655. They're not listening.

  656. They're not coming.

  657. They're not engaging.

  658. The task just seems too much for us.

  659. We are not able to rebuild the wall.

  660. We are not able to rebuild the church.

  661. We cannot do it.

  662. What makes the difference?

  663. But we need to remember

  664. what we have in the Lord

  665. and what He has done for us.

  666. Psalm 1, 2, 6, at verse 3,

  667. it says,

  668. The Lord has done great things for us.

  669. We are glad.

  670. Restore our fortunes, O Lord,

  671. like streams in the Negev.

  672. We need to focus

  673. on what the Lord has done.

  674. The Lord has done

  675. great things for us.

  676. They could be reminded of that

  677. in Nehemiah's day,

  678. and we'll see that in a moment,

  679. but surely we reminded that

  680. of ourselves.

  681. The Lord has done

  682. great things for us.

  683. He has come to us.

  684. He died for us.

  685. He rose from the grave for us.

  686. He prayed for us.

  687. He will come again for us.

  688. All these assurances we have

  689. in the Word of God.

  690. The Lord has done

  691. great things for us.

  692. And that is what we have

  693. to stay focused on.

  694. That is what keeps us going.

  695. The more we see

  696. what the Lord has done for us,

  697. the more we see

  698. service to Him

  699. as just something we owe,

  700. something we love to do,

  701. something we're delighted

  702. to be involved in.

  703. And there's an example

  704. here for us.

  705. As said, chapter 3,

  706. it just seems like a list

  707. of names.

  708. But there's a name

  709. on that list

  710. that's an example to us.

  711. And it's worth looking at this

  712. just to see it.

  713. Looking for those

  714. who were enthused

  715. for the work.

  716. In Nehemiah 3,

    Nehemiah 3:11

  717. verse 11,

  718. we read there

  719. of a man called

  720. Machijah,

  721. the son of Haran.

  722. Just a passing comment

  723. there on him.

  724. And it says that

  725. together with another man,

  726. Hashab,

  727. repaired another section

  728. on the tower

  729. of the ovens.

  730. Now,

  731. it's just

  732. a passing comment,

  733. isn't it?

  734. But so often

  735. with these lists,

  736. you have to look deeper.

  737. We saw it

  738. in Colossians

  739. as we were looking

  740. at the list of names there.

  741. There's so much

  742. behind the name.

  743. And for this,

  744. you have to go back

  745. to Ezra chapter 10.

    Ezra 10 chapter mention

  746. And there's another

  747. list of the names

  748. there for us.

  749. Beginning at verse 18,

  750. it says,

  751. those guilty

  752. of intermarriage.

  753. So,

  754. there are those

  755. who had failed

  756. to trust the Lord.

  757. And in

  758. verse 25,

  759. you see there

  760. a list of names

  761. and of Israel

  762. of the sons

  763. of Parosh,

  764. Ramiah,

  765. Isaiah,

  766. Machijah.

  767. His name

  768. is on that list.

  769. So,

  770. you find his name

  771. in two different lists here.

  772. Initially,

  773. he's on the list

  774. of those

  775. who are guilty

  776. of intermarrying,

  777. disobeying,

  778. the Lord.

  779. But now,

  780. here he is

  781. in Nehemiah's day

  782. in chapter 3,

  783. verse 11.

  784. He's involved

  785. in the work

  786. of the Lord.

  787. He has done wrong

  788. before God,

  789. but he's been made

  790. right with God.

  791. And that is

  792. what enthuses him

  793. for the work.

  794. That is what

  795. keeps him going

  796. in the work.

  797. So,

  798. it's a great

  799. reminder to us

  800. of the power

  801. of God

  802. to save

  803. and of what

  804. we owe

  805. the Lord

  806. for our salvation.

  807. We remember

  808. Onesimus

  809. in Colossians 2.

  810. He had a past

  811. where he'd failed God,

  812. but he was restored

  813. by God

  814. and was used

  815. by him.

  816. So,

  817. what keeps us going

  818. in times

  819. of discouragement?

  820. Surely,

  821. to remember

  822. that the Lord

  823. has saved us.

  824. So,

  825. whether

  826. what we see here

  827. is opposition

  828. or discouragement,

  829. we fix our eyes

  830. on the Lord.

  831. And what you find

  832. here is that

  833. as they do that,

  834. as they keep

  835. restoring their faith,

  836. returning their vision,

  837. their focus

  838. to the Lord,

  839. you see it

  840. even in this chapter

  841. again and again.

  842. Verse 6,

  843. in the midst

  844. of the conflict

  845. that they were

  846. seeing around them,

  847. it says in verse 6,

  848. so we built

  849. the wall.

  850. In verse 16,

  851. again,

  852. they had faced

  853. opposition

  854. and what does it say?

  855. From that day on,

  856. half of my servants

  857. worked on construction.

  858. They returned

  859. to the work.

  860. Verse 21,

  861. so we labored

  862. at the work.

  863. They keep coming

  864. back to the work.

  865. They keep doing

  866. the same thing.

  867. And so,

  868. let's not lose heart.

  869. Let's not be discouraged.

  870. Even when it seems

  871. we're maybe just doing

  872. the same thing

  873. again and again,

  874. we are doing it

  875. for the Lord.

  876. Lord.

  877. And that's what's

  878. the key.

  879. And we think of

  880. even roles

  881. in our own congregation

  882. and how people,

  883. many of you are involved

  884. in so many different roles

  885. in the church.

  886. We've got Sunday school

  887. teachers.

  888. We've got people

  889. working with toddlers,

  890. with creche.

  891. We've got people

  892. on door duty

  893. and tea duty.

  894. We've got people

  895. who are visiting,

  896. doing the work

  897. of the deacon's court,

  898. the Kirk session,

  899. serving in so many

  900. different ways,

  901. even preaching

  902. of the word.

  903. It can all seem

  904. so often we're just

  905. doing the same thing

  906. again and again.

  907. And we maybe

  908. feel discouraged.

  909. What difference

  910. is it making?

  911. Is it doing any good

  912. and the devil

  913. will come in?

  914. There'll be conflict.

  915. There'll be discouragement.

  916. But we take heart.

  917. We are doing it

  918. for the Lord.

  919. And the work of the Lord

  920. is a great work.

  921. As Paul says

  922. to the church of Galatia

  923. in chapter 6,

  924. verse 9,

  925. he says,

  926. let us not grow weary

  927. of doing good.

  928. Let us not grow weary

  929. of doing all the tasks

  930. that we are involved in,

  931. even if it seems repetitive.

  932. Even when it seems

  933. that there's no good

  934. coming out of it.

  935. let us not grow weary

  936. of doing good.

  937. For what does he say?

  938. For in due season

  939. we will reap

  940. if we do not give up.

  941. And that's what you see

  942. here in Nehemiah.

  943. He keeps saying to them,

  944. don't lose heart.

  945. Don't give up.

  946. Don't grow weary

  947. in doing good

  948. because you will reap

  949. in due season.

  950. And that's the third thing

  951. that we see here.

  952. That keeping focused

  953. is crucial.

  954. You know,

  955. there was times

  956. when Nehemiah was afraid.

  957. When you go back

  958. to chapter 2,

  959. verse 2,

  960. as he stood

  961. before the king there.

  962. It said,

  963. And the king said to me,

  964. Why is your face sad?

  965. Seeing as you are not sick,

  966. this is nothing

  967. but sadness

  968. of the heart.

  969. Then I was very much

  970. afraid,

  971. he says.

  972. And I said to the king,

  973. he went on,

  974. he was afraid,

  975. but he went on.

  976. It was Robert Louis Stevenson

  977. that once said,

  978. Keep your fears

  979. to yourself,

  980. share your courage

  981. with others.

  982. Well,

  983. that's what we see

  984. in some ways

  985. with Nehemiah here.

  986. He wasn't keeping

  987. his fears to himself,

  988. though.

  989. He was sharing

  990. his fears

  991. with the Lord.

  992. But he was sharing

  993. his courage

  994. with others.

  995. And Nehemiah

  996. always keeps

  997. this vision in mind

  998. of the restoration

  999. of the wall.

  1000. And it's much more

  1001. than that.

  1002. It's about the people

  1003. of Jerusalem.

  1004. The salvation

  1005. of the people.

  1006. And they needed

  1007. to be reminded

  1008. what they were

  1009. fighting for.

1010. And that's what he does.

  1011. He refocuses them

  1012. on the Lord

  1013. and on the work.

1014. And that's what we see

  1015. in verse 14.

  1016. What he says

  1017. to them there,

  1018. he says,

  1019. I looked and I rose

1020. and said to the nobles

  1021. and to the officials

  1022. and to the rest

  1023. of the people,

  1024. do not be afraid

  1025. of them.

  1026. Remember the Lord

  1027. who is great

  1028. and awesome

  1029. and fight

  1030. for your brothers,

  1031. your sons,

  1032. your daughters,

  1033. your wives

  1034. and your homes.

  1035. He reminds them

  1036. and he gives them

  1037. a focus.

  1038. What were they

  1039. fighting for?

  1040. It was more

  1041. than just walls.

  1042. It was a people.

  1043. And that's the fight

  1044. that we are in

  1045. today as well.

1046. We are in the fight

  1047. of faith

  1048. and the fight

  1049. for our people.

  1050. Here,

  1051. in verse 14,

  1052. they're reminded

  1053. that they were

  1054. fighting for the faith.

  1055. More was at stake

  1056. than just the wall

  1057. being built.

  1058. It was the worship

  1059. of God

  1060. in Jerusalem.

1061. That was in the balance

  1062. here.

  1063. And that's what

  1064. we're fighting for.

  1065. For people to come

  1066. and worship God.

  1067. He was fighting

  1068. here.

  1069. They were fighting

  1070. here for their

  1071. families.

  1072. Fight for your

  1073. brothers,

  1074. your sons,

  1075. your daughters,

  1076. your wives.

  1077. That's the fight

  1078. that we are in.

  1079. When those of our

  1080. family are lost,

  1081. when those of our

  1082. community are lost,

  1083. we are fighting

  1084. for their salvation.

  1085. We keep that

  1086. in view.

  1087. our focus is on

  1088. the work

  1089. of the Lord.

  1090. It seems

  1091. an impossible

  1092. task,

  1093. but it's so

  1094. necessary.

  1095. And in many ways

  1096. here,

  1097. they were fighting

  1098. for their very

  1099. future.

  1100. The future of

  1101. Jerusalem was at stake.

  1102. So long as these

  1103. walls were broken

  1104. down,

  1105. they were open

  1106. to attack

  1107. the enemy

  1108. and the people

  1109. of God

  1110. could be done

  1111. away with.

  1112. But we know

  1113. in the word

  1114. of God

  1115. that the Lord

  1116. will keep

  1117. his people.

  1118. That he will

  1119. always have

  1120. his people.

  1121. But surely

  1122. we too

  1123. are fighting

  1124. for the future

  1125. here as well.

  1126. That a generation

  1127. after us

  1128. will still

  1129. worship God

  1130. here.

  1131. That a generation

  1132. after us

  1133. will serve

  1134. the Lord

  1135. here.

  1136. We're in a fight.

  1137. But it's a fight

  1138. worth fighting.

  1139. It's worth

  1140. fighting for.

  1141. And that's

  1142. what Nehemiah

  1143. does.

  1144. He stirs

  1145. them up

  1146. here

  1147. to fight.

  1148. And he says,

  1149. do not be

  1150. afraid of them.

  1151. Remember

  1152. the Lord.

  1153. Are we up

  1154. for the fight?

  1155. Are we

  1156. willing to

  1157. fight

  1158. in that

  1159. way today

  1160. to fight

  1161. for your

  1162. brothers,

  1163. your sons,

  1164. your daughters,

  1165. your wives,

  1166. your homes?

  1167. Charles Spurgeon

  1168. have used

  1169. this quote

  1170. before,

  1171. but it

  1172. seems to

  1173. tie in

  1174. so well

  1175. with this

  1176. as well.

  1177. He said,

  1178. if sinners

  1179. be damned,

  1180. at least

  1181. let them

  1182. leap to

  1183. hell over

  1184. our dead

  1185. bodies.

  1186. And if

  1187. they perish,

  1188. let them

  1189. perish with

  1190. our arms

  1191. wrapped

  1192. about their

  1193. knees,

  1194. imploring

  1195. them to

  1196. stay.

  1197. If hell

  1198. must be

  1199. filled,

  1200. let it

  1201. be filled

  1202. in the

  1203. teeth of

  1204. our

  1205. exertions,

  1206. and let

  1207. no one

  1208. go unwarned

  1209. and

  1210. unprayed

  1211. for.

  1212. That's the

  1213. challenge

  1214. to us,

  1215. to fight.

  1216. The fourth

  1217. thing and the

  1218. final thing

  1219. we see here

  1220. just briefly

  1221. is tied

  1222. into these

  1223. words,

  1224. remember

  1225. the Lord.

  1226. God is

  1227. invincible.

  1228. The danger

  1229. with going

  1230. through Nehemiah

  1231. is that we

  1232. can make

  1233. it about

  1234. ourselves.

  1235. But Nehemiah

  1236. is always

  1237. focused on

  1238. God.

  1239. He prays

  1240. to God.

  1241. He points

  1242. to God.

  1243. His passion

  1244. is for

  1245. God.

  1246. One preacher

  1247. puts it

  1248. like this,

  1249. Nehemiah,

  1250. the book,

  1251. is ultimately

  1252. about Jesus

  1253. Christ,

  1254. about his

  1255. great project

  1256. of building

  1257. his church

  1258. against which

  1259. the gates

  1260. of hell

  1261. will not

  1262. prevail.

  1263. Nehemiah is

  1264. not mainly

  1265. about leadership

  1266. or church

  1267. growth or

  1268. business

  1269. management.

  1270. Nehemiah is

  1271. mainly about

  1272. Jesus.

  1273. Jesus is

  1274. the one

  1275. who builds

  1276. the new

  1277. Jerusalem,

  1278. the church

  1279. of the

  1280. living God.

  1281. God is

  1282. building his

  1283. church

  1284. today.

  1285. And the

  1286. gates of

  1287. hell will

  1288. not prevail

  1289. against it.

  1290. In verse

  1291. 20 here,

  1292. we're reminded

  1293. of that as

  1294. well.

  1295. In the place

  1296. where you hear

  1297. the sound of

  1298. the trumpet

  1299. rally to us

  1300. there,

  1301. our God

  1302. will fight

  1303. for us.

  1304. God is

  1305. on our

  1306. side as

  1307. we fight

  1308. for him.

  1309. But do

  1310. we remember

  1311. that?

  1312. We don't

  1313. look to

  1314. ourselves.

  1315. The psalm

  1316. that we sang

  1317. at the start,

  1318. Psalm 127,

  1319. reminds us,

  1320. unless the

  1321. Lord builds

  1322. the house,

  1323. the builders

  1324. build in

  1325. vain.

  1326. The Lord

  1327. is building

  1328. his church.

  1329. He uses

  1330. us, but we

  1331. are to put

  1332. ourselves

  1333. into his

  1334. hands.

  1335. There's a

  1336. story of a

  1337. little boy

  1338. who was

  1339. traveling to

  1340. see his

  1341. grandparents.

  1342. He was

  1343. flying an

  1344. airplane to

  1345. see his

  1346. grandparents.

  1347. And sat

  1348. beside him

  1349. on the

  1350. plane was

  1351. a professor

  1352. from a

  1353. university.

  1354. And the

  1355. professor

  1356. sitting beside

  1357. him wasn't

  1358. a Christian

  1359. at all,

  1360. but he saw

  1361. this little

  1362. boy sitting

  1363. beside him

  1364. reading a

  1365. Sunday

  1366. school

  1367. magazine.

  1368. And the

  1369. professor

  1370. thought to

  1371. himself he'd

  1372. had some

  1373. fun with

  1374. the young

  1375. boy.

  1376. He turned

  1377. to him and

  1378. said,

  1379. young man,

  1380. if you

  1381. can tell

  1382. me something

  1383. God can

  1384. do, I'll

  1385. give you a

  1386. big shiny

  1387. apple.

  1388. Well, the

  1389. wee boy

  1390. thought to

  1391. himself for

  1392. a moment

  1393. and replied,

  1394. sir, if

  1395. you can

  1396. tell me

  1397. something God

  1398. can't do,

  1399. I'll give

  1400. you a whole

  1401. barrel of

  1402. apples.

  1403. A simple

  1404. faith.

  1405. He wouldn't

  1406. let God

  1407. be mocked,

  1408. no matter

  1409. how intelligent

  1410. this professor

  1411. was.

  1412. He turned

  1413. it right

  1414. back to

  1415. him.

  1416. If you

  1417. can tell

  1418. me

  1419. something

  1420. God

  1421. can't

  1422. do,

  1423. can you

  1424. tell me

  1425. something

  1426. tonight

  1427. God

  1428. can't

  1429. do?

  1430. Can you

  1431. look around

  1432. this town

  1433. and say

  1434. God

  1435. cannot

  1436. save

  1437. the

  1438. people

  1439. of

  1440. this

  1441. place?

  1442. God

  1443. cannot

  1444. rebuild

  1445. his

  1446. church

  1447. here.

  1448. If you

  1449. say that

  1450. you've

  1451. lost

  1452. faith

  1453. because

  1454. God

  1455. is

  1456. invincible.

  1457. God

  1458. is

  1459. building

  1460. his

  1461. church.

  1462. We

  1463. ask

  1464. ourselves

  1465. are we

  1466. builders

  1467. or are

  1468. we

  1469. wreckers?

  1470. Do we

  1471. long to

  1472. be involved

  1473. in building

  1474. his

  1475. kingdom?

  1476. Do you

  1477. believe

  1478. that he

  1479. is building

  1480. his

  1481. church

  1482. church

  1483. even

  1484. here

  1485. in

  1486. Stornway?

  1487. Yes,

  1488. there are

  1489. challenges

  1490. for us,

  1491. many of

  1492. them,

  1493. but we

  1494. have to

  1495. have

  1496. confidence

  1497. and faith

  1498. in him.

  1499. We

  1500. fight.

  1501. We

  1502. fight for

  1503. those

  1504. who we

  1505. love.

  1506. We

  1507. fight for

  1508. those who

  1509. we do

  1510. not know.

  1511. We

  1512. fight for

  1513. those who

  1514. even just

  1515. now are

  1516. our

  1517. enemies

  1518. and

  1519. enemies

  1520. of

  1521. God,

  1522. but we

  1523. pray that

  1524. God will

  1525. build his

  1526. church.

  1527. Nehemiah

  1528. encouraged the

  1529. people not

  1530. to be afraid

  1531. to remember

  1532. the Lord,

  1533. to fight

  1534. and to

  1535. build.

  1536. Let us

  1537. do likewise.

  1538. Let us

  1539. rise and

  1540. build,

  1541. trusting the

  1542. Lord.

  1543. Let us

  1544. pray.

  1545. Our

  1546. Father in

  1547. heaven,

  1548. give us

  1549. eyes of

  1550. faith,

  1551. even as

  1552. we look

  1553. around

  1554. us,

  1555. and give

  1556. us a

  1557. prayer of

  1558. faith offered

  1559. up to

  1560. you,

  1561. that we

  1562. would come

  1563. before you,

  1564. trusting in

  1565. you,

  1566. in all your

  1567. goodness to

  1568. us,

  1569. in all that

  1570. you are

  1571. able to

  1572. do,

  1573. never doubting

  1574. that there

  1575. is anything

  1576. that you

  1577. cannot do,

  1578. for with

  1579. God all

  1580. things are

  1581. possible.

  1582. So Lord,

  1583. hear our

  1584. prayers,

  1585. continue with

  1586. us as a

  1587. people,

  1588. build us up

  1589. as a

  1590. church,

  1591. here and

  1592. all throughout

  1593. the world,

  1594. we pray,

  1595. Lord,

  1596. that your

  1597. people will

  1598. glorify your

  1599. name,

  1600. day and

  1601. night,

  1602. young and

  1603. old,

  1604. all throughout

  1605. our lands,

  1606. for we ask

  1607. it for the

  1608. glory of our

  1609. Saviour.

  1610. Amen.

  1611. Amen.

  1612. We're going to

  1613. conclude by

  1614. singing to God's

  1615. praise in

  1616. Psalm 18,

  1617. in the

  1618. Sing Psalms

  1619. version,

  1620. Psalm 18,

    Psalms 18:27

  1621. verse 27,

  1622. verse 27.

  1623. The tune for

  1624. this is

  1625. Talis

  1626. Canon.

  1627. We'll sing

  1628. from verse

  1629. 27 down

  1630. to verse

  1631. 30,

  1632. three stanzas.

  1633. You save

  1634. the humble

  1635. and the

  1636. meek,

  1637. but bring

  1638. the proud

  1639. down from

  1640. their height.

  1641. You,

  1642. Lord,

  1643. will keep

  1644. my lamp

  1645. aflame.

  1646. God

  1647. turns my

  1648. darkness

  1649. into light.

  1650. And again,

  1651. verse 29,

  1652. we're reminded

  1653. that with

  1654. God we

  1655. can advance

  1656. against

  1657. a troop.

  1658. So we'll

  1659. sing these

  1660. three stanzas,

  1661. verse 27

  1662. to 30,

  1663. to God's

  1664. praise.

  1665. Amen.

  1666. Lord,

  1667. will keep

  1668. my

  1669. lamp

  1670. aflame.

  1671. God

  1672. turns

  1673. my

  1674. darkness

  1675. into

  1676. light.

  1677. With

  1678. help

  1679. from

  1680. God

  1681. I

  1682. can

  1683. advance

  1684. against

  1685. a troop

  1686. and

  1687. and

  1688. rarts

  1689. them
