  30. Let's now join together in prayer briefly.

  31. We're praying for the young folks

  32. on the Sunday school and creche

  33. and also the tweenies at this time.

  34. Let's call upon the Lord.

  35. O Lord, our God, we thank you

  36. that our children and young folks

  37. can gather with us,

  38. that we have a heart's desire for them

  39. that they will know you

  40. and that they will come to follow you

  41. all the days of their lives.

  42. And we thank you today, Lord,

  43. that they are here with us

  44. and we pray for those who are away

  45. on holiday at this time

  46. and not able to be with us.

  47. And we pray for other children too

  48. who may have joined us as visitors.

  49. We ask that your blessing

  50. will be with them today as well

  51. as we meet together here to worship you.

  52. Help us, we pray,

  53. to give attention to your word.

  54. Help us to learn from it

  55. and help us especially

  56. to know yourself

  57. and to know the blessing

  58. that you have for your people

  59. to be our portion today.

  60. Receive us, we pray now,

  61. and cleanse us from sin

  62. in Jesus' name.

  63. Amen.

  64. Well, a word to the children now

  65. before we move on with the service.

  66. I'm going to say a number of things to you

  67. and I want you to stick up your hand

  68. if you think that they are actually true.

  69. There are more Lego figures in the world

  70. than there are people.

  71. Now, there are 8 billion people in the world.

  72. That's 8,000 million people in the world.

  73. That's a lot of people.

  74. And if you think there are more Lego figures

  75. than that in the world,

  76. stick your hand up.

  77. Adults can do it as well if you want.

  78. Are there more Lego figures

  79. than 8 billion people?

  80. What do you think?

  81. If you think no,

  82. don't put your hand up.

  83. If you think yes,

  84. put your hand up.

  85. Lots of people think

  86. that's not true.

  87. Some people do think it's true,

  88. so they've got their hands up.

  89. Okay.

  90. What about this then?

  91. Astronauts who go into space.

  92. When an astronaut goes to space,

  93. their body actually grows

  94. a bit taller

  95. while they're in space

  96. and then go back to normal

  97. when they come back to Earth.

  98. Hands up those who think that's true.

  99. Yeah, there's more people

  100. think that that's true

  101. than the first one.

  102. One more for you.

  103. A sea lion

  104. is the only animal

  105. that can clap in time

  106. either to music

  107. or to a beat.

  108. How many people think that's true?

  109. A sea lion is the only animal

  110. that can clap in time

  111. to a beat.

  112. Nobody thinks that's true.

  113. No hands going up.

  114. Okay.

  115. Well, let me tell you,

  116. all of these are actually true.

  117. All of them are true.

  118. Yeah.

  119. But it's not going to make

  120. much difference to your life

  121. whether you actually know that

  122. or not.

  123. I mean,

  124. if you hadn't heard

  125. any of that today

  126. and you went back home

  127. and you hadn't learned

  128. that there are more

  129. Lego figures in the world

  130. than human beings

  131. and that the astronauts

  132. actually grow taller

  133. for the time they're in space

  134. and that a sea lion

  135. can clap in time

  136. to music or to a beat,

  137. it wouldn't really make

  138. much difference to your life

  139. if you didn't know that.

  140. But let me say something else.

  141. God so loved the world

  142. that He gave

  143. His only begotten Son

  144. that whoever believes in Him

  145. should not perish

  146. but have everlasting life.

  147. How many believe

  148. that that's true?

  149. Every hand should go up.

  150. Is there anyone who thinks

  151. that that's not true?

  152. No.

  153. God so loved the world

  154. that He gave His only begotten Son

  155. that whoever believes in Jesus

  156. would not perish

  157. but have everlasting life.

  158. See, it makes a big difference

  159. what you think is true and not

  160. when it's really important.

  161. Some people say,

  162. well, truth is something

  163. that I can just believe for myself.

  164. If it's true for me,

  165. then it doesn't matter

  166. about anything else.

  167. And some people will say,

  168. that's what you should have,

  169. that's the kind of attitude

  170. you should have to the Bible

  171. or to the Gospel.

  172. If it's true for you,

  173. then that's okay,

  174. but it's not true for me.

  175. Now, we must never come

  176. to the Bible or to church

  177. to worship God

  178. with thoughts like that.

  179. It is important

  180. that this is God's truth.

  181. It's not just truth

  182. for some people,

  183. it's truth for everybody.

  184. And it's important

  185. because it tells us

  186. the things

  187. that are really,

  188. really important for us

  189. to believe

  190. and to follow

  191. and to accept.

  192. So today,

  193. it doesn't really matter

  194. that some things

  195. may not be true

  196. or some things

  197. may be true.

  198. It doesn't matter

  199. whether you know about them

  200. or believe them or not,

  201. but it really does matter

  202. that you know Jesus

  203. for yourself

  204. and that you know

  205. that Jesus

  206. is God's Son

  207. who came into the world

  208. to save us

  209. from our sins.

  210. And there's nothing

  211. more important

  212. for us to know

  213. and to know

  214. as the truth

  215. than that.

  216. So today,

  217. this truth,

  218. God's truth,

  219. the truth that's

  220. in the Bible

  221. is so important

  222. compared to many

  223. other things

  224. that may

  225. or may not

  226. be true.

  227. Now we're going to say

  228. the Lord's Prayer.

  229. It's on the sheet

  230. if you need to follow it.

  231. We're doing this

  232. because we want to learn

  233. the Lord's Prayer

  234. off by heart.

  235. It's important

  236. not just to know

  237. the words

  238. but to know

  239. the meaning of them too.

  240. And in fact,

  241. certain other passages

  242. of the Bible,

  243. as much of the Bible

  244. as you can,

  245. it's important

  246. for us to learn

  247. and to be able

  248. to recite.

  249. So let's say

  250. the Lord's Prayer then.

  251. Our Father,

  252. which art in heaven,

  253. hallowed be thy name.

  254. Thy kingdom come.

  255. Thy will be done

  256. on earth

  257. as it is in heaven.

  258. Give us this day

  259. our daily bread

  260. and forgive us

  261. our debts

  262. as we forgive

  263. our debtors.

  264. and lead us

  265. not into temptation

  266. but deliver us

  267. from evil.

  268. For thine is the kingdom,

  269. the power,

  270. and the glory

  271. forever.

  272. Amen.

  273. We're going to sing

  274. once again.

  275. This time we're singing

  276. Psalm 119.

  277. In St. Psalms,

  278. that's on page 157,

  279. verses 1 to 8.

  280. Tune this before the throne.

  281. Blessed are those

  282. of blameless ways

  283. who live according

  284. to God's Word.

  285. Blessed are those

  286. who keep His laws,

  287. who with their whole heart

  288. seek the Lord.

  289. Our theme topic

  290. for the sermon today

  291. is listening to God,

  292. following the series

  293. we're having

  294. on the gathered church,

  295. but the gathered church

  296. in the sense

  297. in which today

  298. we're going to look at it

  299. as the church gathered

  300. to listen

  301. to God's voice.

  302. These words

  303. in our Psalms today

  304. have to do

  305. mainly with

  306. how we're hearing God

  307. and how God is speaking

  308. to us through His Word.

  309. So these words,

  310. Blessed are those

  311. of blameless ways

  312. who live according

  313. to God's Word.

  314. Let's stand to sing.

  315. Blessed are those

  316. of blameless ways

  317. who live according

  318. to God's Word.

  319. Blessed are those

  320. who keep His laws,

  321. who with their whole heart

  322. seek the Lord.

  323. They keep themselves

  324. from doing wrong

  325. by walking in His

  326. strength with praise.

  327. You have established

  328. laws on us

  329. that are to be

  330. open always,

  331. that are to be

  332. open always.

  333. O that my grace

  334. were steadfast, Lord,

  335. in making your

  336. your deeds

  337. leads my aim.

  338. So when I think

  339. God you commands,

  340. I would not feel

  341. disgrace or shame.

  342. I will praise you

  343. with an upright heart,

  344. as you just lost

  345. are there by me.

  346. All your deeds

  347. I will obey,

  348. do not forsake me

  349. utterly,

  350. do not forsake me

  351. utterly.

  352. Let's now turn

  353. to read God's Word,

  354. and our reading this morning

  355. is from Acts chapter 10.

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  356. The book of Acts chapter 10,

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  357. reading from the beginning

  358. down as far as verse 33.

  359. Acts chapter 10,

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  360. from the beginning

  361. of the chapter.

  362. You'll find it around

  363. page 1106

  364. in the church Bibles

  365. if you're using those.

  366. At Caesarea,

  367. there was a man

  368. named Cornelius,

  369. a centurion

  370. of what was known

  371. as the Italian cohort,

  372. a devout man

  373. who feared God

  374. with all his household,

  375. gave alms generously

  376. to the people,

  377. and prayed continually

  378. to God.

  379. About the ninth hour

  380. of the day,

  381. he saw clearly

  382. in a vision

  383. an angel of God

  384. come in and say to him,

  385. Cornelius.

  386. And he stared at him

  387. in terror and said,

  388. What is it, Lord?

  389. And he said to him,

  390. Your prayers

  391. and your alms

  392. have ascended

  393. as a memorial

  394. before God.

  395. And now send men

  396. to Joppa

  397. and bring one Simon

  398. who is called Peter.

  399. He is lodging

  400. with one Simon

  401. at Tanner

  402. whose house

  403. is by the seaside.

  404. When the angel

  405. who spoke to him

  406. had departed,

  407. he called two

  408. of his servants

  409. and a devout soldier

  410. from among those

  411. who attended him,

  412. and having related

  413. everything to them,

  414. he sent them

  415. to Joppa.

  416. The next day

  417. as they were

  418. on their journey

  419. and approaching the city,

  420. Peter went up

  421. on the housetop

  422. about the sixth hour

  423. to pray.

  424. And he became hungry

  425. and wanted something

  426. to eat.

  427. But while they were

  428. preparing it,

  429. he fell into a trance

  430. and saw the heavens

  431. opened and something

  432. like a great sheet

  433. descending,

  434. being let down

  435. by its four corners

  436. upon the earth.

  437. In it were all kinds

  438. of animals

  439. and reptiles

  440. and birds of the air.

  441. And there came

  442. a voice to him,

  443. Rise, Peter,

  444. kill and eat.

  445. But Peter said,

  446. By no means, Lord,

  447. for I have never

  448. eaten anything

  449. that is common

  450. or unclean.

  451. And the voice

  452. came to him again

  453. the second time,

  454. What God has made clean,

  455. do not call common.

  456. This happened three times,

  457. and the thing

  458. was taken up

  459. at once to heaven.

  460. Now while Peter

  461. was inwardly perplexed

  462. as to what the vision

  463. that he had seen

  464. might mean,

  465. behold,

  466. the men who were sent

  467. by Cornelius,

  468. having made

  469. inquiry for Simon's house,

  470. stood at the gate

  471. and called out

  472. to ask whether Simon,

  473. who was called Peter,

  474. was lodging there.

  475. And while Peter

  476. was pondering the vision,

  477. the Spirit said to him,

  478. Behold,

  479. three men are looking

  480. for you.

  481. Rise and go down

  482. and accompany them

  483. without hesitation,

  484. for I have sent them.

  485. And Peter went down

  486. to the men

  487. and said,

  488. I am the one

  489. you are looking for.

  490. What is the reason

  491. for your coming?

  492. And they said,

  493. Cornelius,

  494. a centurion,

  495. an upright

  496. and God-fearing man

  497. who is well spoken of

  498. by the whole Jewish nation,

  499. was directed

  500. by a holy angel

  501. to send for you

  502. to come to his house

  503. and to hear

  504. what you have to say.

  505. So he invited them

  506. in to be his guests.

  507. The next day

  508. he arose

  509. and went away with them,

  510. and some of the brothers

  511. from Joppa

  512. accompanied him.

  513. And on the following day

  514. they entered Caesarea.

  515. Cornelius was expecting them

  516. and had called together

  517. his relatives

  518. and close friends.

  519. When Peter entered,

  520. Cornelius met him

  521. and fell down

  522. at his feet

  523. and worshipped him.

  524. But Peter lifted him up

  525. saying,

  526. Stand up,

  527. I too am a man.

  528. And as he talked with them,

  529. he went in

  530. and found many persons gathered.

  531. And he said to them,

  532. You yourselves know

  533. how unlawful it is

  534. for a Jew

  535. to associate with

  536. or to visit anyone

  537. of another nation.

  538. But God has shown me

  539. that I should not call

  540. any person

  541. common or unclean.

  542. So when I was sent for,

  543. I came without objection.

  544. I asked then,

  545. Why you sent for me?

  546. And Cornelius said,

  547. Four days ago,

  548. about this hour,

  549. I was praying in my house

  550. at the ninth hour.

  551. Behold,

  552. a man stood before me

  553. in bright clothing

  554. and said,

  555. Cornelius,

  556. your prayer has been heard

  557. and your alms

  558. have been remembered

  559. before God.

  560. Send,

  561. therefore,

  562. to Joppa

  563. and ask for Simon

  564. who is called Peter.

  565. He is lodging

  566. in the house of Simon

  567. at Tanner by the sea.

  568. So I sent for you

  569. at once

  570. and you have been

  571. kind enough to come.

  572. Now,

  573. therefore,

  574. we are all here

  575. in the presence of God

  576. to hear all

  577. that you have been commanded

  578. by the Lord.

  579. Amen.

  580. And may God

  581. follow with this blessing,

  582. this reading again

  583. of His Word.

  584. Let us once again

  585. join together in prayer.

  586. Lord,

  587. we give thanks today

  588. that we are gathered here

  589. in Your name.

  590. We thank You

  591. for the purpose

  592. of our gathering,

  593. which is to worship You,

  594. to come into Your presence,

  595. to draw near to You,

  596. and to come, Lord,

  597. that we might give You

  598. the praise,

  599. the worship,

  600. the honor that is due to You,

  601. that we might also

  602. be receivers

  603. of Your blessing,

  604. and through Your Word

  605. we might come to know

  606. more of that wonderful

  607. eternal life

  608. that You give

  609. to Your people,

  610. that we might also

  611. be able to encourage

  612. one another

  613. in the things

  614. of the Lord.

  615. Oh, bless us,

  616. we pray,

  617. as we come before You.

  618. And that Holy Spirit,

  619. Lord,

  620. of whom we were reading

  621. in this passage

  622. of Your Word,

  623. may it please You,

  624. Lord,

  625. to bestow Your Spirit

  626. today to guide us,

  627. to open our hearts

  628. and minds

  629. to receive Your Word,

  630. and to enable us,

  631. oh, Lord,

  632. to understand more fully

  633. and more completely

  634. and more accurately

  635. those things

  636. that are revealed in it

  637. for our edification,

  638. for our growth

  639. in holiness

  640. and in the grace

  641. and knowledge

  642. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  643. Bless us,

  644. then, we pray,

  645. as we come together

  646. in this way once more.

  647. We ask that Your blessing

  648. may rest upon us

  649. as a congregation

  650. of Your people

  651. and all the congregations

  652. we represent today

  653. wherever we live.

  654. Lord, we pray

  655. that You would be pleased

  656. to bless Your own Word

  657. in our midst.

  658. We ask that You would assure us

  659. that where Your people

  660. gather together

  661. in Your name,

  662. You are there in the midst.

  663. And You are there in the midst

  664. because You take delight in them

  665. and are pleased to bless them.

  666. And we come before You,

  667. Lord,

  668. also conscious

  669. of our unworthiness,

  670. of our sinfulness,

  671. conscious that we need

  672. to confess our sin

  673. as we do to You,

  674. conscious that we need

  675. Your cleansing

  676. from our sin,

  677. Your washing of us

  678. by Your Holy Spirit,

  679. that our hearts may be clean,

  680. that our hearts may be sprinkled

  681. with this power of Your Spirit

  682. in forgiving our sins

  683. and cleansing us

  684. from our defilement.

  685. And therefore,

  686. that we may come before You,

  687. O Lord,

  688. with our conscience purged

  689. and our sin put behind us.

  690. We come before You,

  691. Lord,

  692. seeking that You would,

  693. as we confess our sin,

  694. that You would assure us

  695. of Your great promise

  696. that if we confess our sins,

  697. then You are faithful

  698. and just to forgive us

  699. our sins

  700. and to cleanse us

  701. from all unrighteousness.

  702. We ask Your blessing

  703. to be with us

  704. in all activities

  705. related to our congregational life.

  706. We pray for all

  707. that will take place,

  708. Lord,

  709. by Your will

  710. in this week to come.

  711. And we ask

  712. that You would continue

  713. to bless

  714. and to own

  715. and acknowledge

  716. all that we seek to do

  717. in Your name

  718. and accompaniment

  719. with the worship services

  720. of the congregation.

  721. We ask, too,

  722. Your blessing,

  723. O Lord,

  724. for Nigel Kenny

  725. as he comes to speak

  726. on Wednesday.

  727. We give thanks for him

  728. and from the Christian Institute.

  729. And we ask, Lord,

  730. that You would continue

  731. to bless them

  732. as they bring to our notice

  733. and attention

  734. and help us

  735. with various materials

  736. and matters

  737. that help us

  738. to face the issues

  739. of the day

  740. and those things

  741. that are especially

  742. of concern to us

  743. in our generation.

  744. And so, remember Him,

  745. we pray,

  746. as He goes

  747. from place to place

  748. and as He brings to us,

  749. O Lord,

  750. the work of the Institute.

  751. Remember, too, Lord,

  752. our friends

  753. in the international mission

  754. to the Jewish people.

  755. We thank You for them

  756. and we pray for them

  757. at this time,

  758. especially when we know

  759. of such heightened tension

  760. in Israel

  761. and in the surrounding area.

  762. We, Lord, ask that You

  763. bless all their missionaries

  764. in the various parts

  765. of the world

  766. where they serve You.

  767. We pray that You would

  768. continue to bless

  769. their message,

  770. bless their witness

  771. to the Jewish people,

  772. O Lord,

  773. throughout all these areas

  774. of the world.

  775. Remember, too,

  776. that troubled area

  777. of the world,

  778. O Lord,

  779. especially at this time.

  780. We pray for the people

  781. of Israel.

  782. We pray for the people

  783. of Gaza.

  784. We pray that You

  785. will bless them

  786. at this time

  787. of difficulty,

  788. of the outbreak

  789. of war,

  790. and the tension

  791. that accompanies it,

  792. and the destruction

  793. that inevitably

  794. is part of

  795. such a situation.

  796. Lord,

  797. our God,

  798. may it please You

  799. to bring about

  800. a true and lasting peace.

  801. And may the hearts

  802. of those who are

  803. at enmity with You

  804. and with each other

  805. and with the Gospel,

  806. may they come to be won

  807. by the Holy Spirit,

  808. that they come, Lord,

  809. to lay down their enmity,

  810. and especially their enmity

  811. against Yourself,

  812. and may they come

  813. to know You

  814. as the Prince of Peace,

  815. the God of peace,

  816. the God who brought

  817. from the dead

  818. our Lord Jesus Christ.

  819. We ask Your blessing

  820. for all other parts

  821. of the world today,

  822. all other nations

  823. where there is war

  824. and where there is terrorism,

  825. where there is tension,

  826. where there is so much

  827. difficulty for people

  828. to live their daily lives

  829. in peace.

  830. We ask especially again

  831. that You'd remember

  832. Ukraine and the situation there.

  833. We pray that You'd bless them,

  834. and we ask that You would

  835. continue to help them

  836. against the aggression

  837. of those who have invaded

  838. their country.

  839. We ask, Lord,

  840. that You would be pleased

  841. to bring about peace

  842. there as well,

  843. but help us as we pray

  844. for peace in our world,

  845. Lord, to realize that peace

  846. so often comes at a cost.

  847. We need to stand

  848. for principles

  849. that we know from Your Word

  850. are right and true.

  851. We ask, O Lord,

  852. that You would continue

  853. to bless Your people there

  854. especially,

  855. and we ask that You would

  856. be pleased to grant them,

  857. especially those of them

  858. who remain in Ukraine

  859. as well as those

  860. who have gone to other countries.

  861. Lord, remember them,

  862. we pray,

  863. as a people,

  864. and the hostility

  865. against them at this time.

  866. We ask for our own

  867. Ukrainian friends

  868. here in the congregation,

  869. and the family who have come

  870. to be with us

  871. for some time.

  872. Bless them.

  873. Bless them as they think

  874. of situations back home.

  875. Bless them here with us,

  876. we pray,

  877. and guard them about

  878. and keep them

  879. and help them

  880. in their daily lives,

  881. Lord,

  882. as they adjust at this moment

  883. to being here

  884. in a difficult place for them,

  885. difficult in terms

  886. of their language

  887. and of the situation

  888. and the culture.

  889. Be pleased, Lord,

  890. to bless them

  891. and continue to watch over them.

  892. We ask that You would

  893. now continue to bless us here

  894. as we worship You.

  895. We pray that You would help us

  896. to hear Your voice,

  897. to listen to Your voice,

  898. to hear us as You speak to us

  899. through Your Word.

  900. We ask that You would help us,

  901. Lord,

  902. to focus our mind

  903. on the importance

  904. of hearing the living God

  905. and coming to respond

  906. to His voice

  907. with our obedient response.

  908. Lord, grant us these mercies,

  909. we pray,

  910. for we ask them in Jesus' name.

  911. Amen.

  912. Before we turn to God's Word,

  913. we'll sing once again,

  914. again in Psalm 119.

  915. And this time we're singing

  916. in the Scottish Psalter.

  917. I'm sorry,

  918. we're singing in the Sing Psalms

  919. on page 165,

  920. singing verses 137 to 144.

  921. The tune this time is Warrington.

  922. O Lord, You are the righteous one.

  923. The statutes that You give are just.

  924. You lay down laws of righteousness

  925. entirely worthy of our trust.

  926. So, Psalm 119,

    Psalms 119:137–144

  927. verses 137 to 144,

  928. on page 165,

  929. to God's praise.

  930. O Lord, You are the righteous one.

  931. The statutes that You give are just.

  932. You lay down laws of righteousness

  933. entirely worthy of our trust.

  934. My zeal consumes and wears me out,

  935. because my foes forget Your word.

  936. Your promises are tried and true,

  937. and I, Your servant, love them, Lord.

  938. O I am lowly undespised,

  939. Your peace and time do not forget.

  940. Eternal is Your righteousness,

  941. true is the law that You have said.

  942. The stress and trouble

  943. best be done,

  944. but Your commands are my delight.

  945. Grant wisdom so that I may live.

  946. Your statutes are forever mine.

  947. Now please turn with me to Acts chapter 10,

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  948. the passage we read,

  949. especially the words we find in verse 33,

  950. but we'll need to take these few verses

  951. before that as well.

  952. And indeed, we read through the whole passage

  953. just to give us the buildup

  954. to what we find in the verse

  955. that we're looking at today.

  956. So verse 33,

  957. So I sent for you at once,

  958. and you have been kind enough to come.

  959. Now therefore we are all here

  960. in the presence of God

  961. to hear all that you have been commanded

  962. by the Lord,

  963. especially that second part of the verse.

  964. We are here in the presence of God

  965. to hear all that you have been commanded

  966. by the Lord.

  967. So a third in the series,

  968. a very short series on the gathered church,

  969. where we're looking at matters

  970. that are particularly of importance

  971. with regard to the church

  972. as gathered together,

  973. such as we are today in worship.

  974. We've looked previously at Matthew 18,

  975. as many as are gathered in the name of Christ,

  976. even if there are just two or three,

  977. God or Christ is present in the midst.

  978. We looked at that passage first of all.

  979. Then we looked at Hebrews chapter 10,

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  980. from the foundation of Jesus

  981. being the high priest of His people,

  982. that we are to draw near to God.

  983. And then it says a number of things

  984. that are related to that,

  985. finishing with that we are to

  986. draw near to God and be together,

  987. assembling, not forgetting,

  988. the assembling of ourselves together,

  989. as the custom of some is,

  990. but rather that we stimulate one another

  991. to love and to good works,

  992. another important aspect

  993. of our gathering together,

  994. along with the worship of God,

  995. which is given primary consideration.

  996. And today we're looking

  997. at this particular focus

  998. on being in the presence of God

  999. to hear all that you have been commanded

  1000. by the Lord.

1001. Now, there's a lot to do with

1002. attending to the worship of God,

1003. and that is more than just listening to God.

  1004. We're singing His praises.

1005. We call upon Him in prayer, as you know.

1006. But we're focusing today on this verse

1007. as it gives particular interest to us

1008. with regard to listening to God.

  1009. We're gathered together

1010. as the church of God

1011. to hear what God has to say to us.

  1012. And it's interesting,

1013. the way that it's put here.

1014. We've read through the build-up to it,

  1015. this man Cornelius,

1016. and how the Lord brought this to his house,

1017. how He brought him into this situation.

  1018. And so our focus,

1019. and really this in many ways

  1020. is a miniature, isn't it,

1021. of what the church ought to be

1022. or what the gathering of the church,

1023. the gathering of the church

  1024. in a congregational sense

1025. or even the wider sense

1026. or even a smaller sense,

1027. how it ought to be.

1028. And the words here, I think,

1029. are so appropriate for ourselves,

  1030. whether it's here

  1031. in a congregational setting

1032. or a smaller or larger setting,

  1033. that we can say

  1034. we are all here

1035. in the presence of God

1036. to hear what God has to say to us

1037. through the preaching of His Word,

1038. the things that are commanded

  1039. by the Lord.

1040. Now, what then can we take

  1041. from this passage?

  1042. Well, first of all,

  1043. we learn from this

1044. the importance of a due preparation

  1045. to hear God's voice.

1046. The importance of a due preparation.

1047. The key to any successful project

1048. or event is in the preparation.

1049. It doesn't matter what you're going to do,

1050. whether it's a small or great event

  1051. or project,

1052. the key is in the preparation.

1053. Tradesmen will tell you that

1054. if you come and say to them,

  1055. well, that's a really brilliant job

  1056. you've made,

  1057. whether it's painting

  1058. or joinery,

  1059. whatever it is,

  1060. and they'll tell you,

  1061. yes, but the secret

  1062. is in the preparation.

1063. If you do the preparation,

1064. if that's the way it should be,

1065. then that's really the basis

  1066. of a good job,

1067. the basis of a successful project.

  1068. And it's the same

1069. with our hearing of God's Word.

  1070. In many ways,

1071. the preparation is as important

1072. as the moment you're actually hearing

1073. the Word itself being preached to you.

  1074. And the key, therefore,

  1075. in the preparation

1076. is also in this passage as well.

  1077. Because you notice,

1078. he called his friends in verse 24.

1079. You notice what Cornelius did

  1080. when he,

  1081. on the following day,

  1082. as they entered Caesarea,

  1083. Cornelius was expecting them

  1084. and had called together

1085. his relatives and close friends.

  1086. You see, for Cornelius,

1087. this was going to be

  1088. a really important event.

1089. He was expecting the apostle Peter.

1090. He was expecting him to come

1091. with some people accompanying him.

  1092. And this word expecting

1093. that you find in that verse

1094. is really an important word.

1095. It's important because it means

  1096. something more than just

1097. a general sort of expectation.

  1098. Cornelius was expecting them

  1099. means Cornelius was eagerly

1100. looking forward to them coming.

1101. Cornelius had his mind set

  1102. upon them coming

  1103. and upon Peter especially

  1104. coming at his invitation

  1105. to his house

1106. to tell them more about the Lord.

1107. Cornelius was not a Jew.

  1108. He was a Gentile.

1109. He was a convert to Judaism.

1110. He still had a lot to learn,

  1111. as you obviously see

  1112. from his reaction

  1113. when Peter entered.

1114. He wanted to worship Peter

  1115. until Peter corrected him.

1116. But he was a devout man.

  1117. He worshipped God.

  1118. He prayed.

  1119. This was an answer

1120. to his prayers to God.

  1121. And here is Cornelius

  1122. expecting them.

  1123. He had prayed.

1124. He knew he was coming.

1125. And the coming of Peter

1126. was of such importance to him

  1127. that he called together

1128. his friends and his relatives

1129. to be part of that occasion.

1130. It wasn't enough for him

1131. that he was expecting Peter eagerly.

1132. It wasn't enough for him

  1133. that he was excited

  1134. at the prospect

  1135. of this apostle coming

  1136. to speak to him,

1137. to tell him more about the Lord.

1138. He wanted others to share

  1139. in that experience.

1140. He wanted others to come

1141. and benefit from that event.

  1142. And you know,

1143. that's what is true for us

  1144. as well, isn't it?

  1145. Surely.

1146. That we come together here

1147. not just for our own sake.

  1148. We don't just come

  1149. as individuals.

  1150. We come collective.

1151. We're the gathered church of God.

  1152. But you want others

  1153. to share that experience.

1154. Why do you want others

  1155. to share that experience?

1156. Well, you don't say to people,

1157. come and hear our minister.

1158. That's not where you begin.

  1159. You begin with saying,

  1160. there's an important event

  1161. happening every single Sunday

  1162. and other times

  1163. in Stornway Free Church

  1164. or whatever church

  1165. we belong to.

  1166. And it's important

  1167. because it's made important

1168. by the fact that God is there

1169. and that God is speaking

1170. to us through His Word.

  1171. Come and hear Him.

  1172. That's the conviction,

  1173. really, isn't it,

1174. of what's happening here today.

1175. We haven't just gathered together here

1176. because we have a nice time together,

  1177. because we enjoy fellowship

  1178. with each other.

1179. That's all part of it,

  1180. I'm sure.

1181. But we have come together today

  1182. because we're convinced

1183. that this is a place

1184. and this is an occasion,

  1185. this is an event

1186. where God comes to speak to us.

  1187. Where God addresses us

  1188. through the Bible,

1189. through the Word of God

  1190. being preached.

1191. Where God has laid upon

  1192. a preacher's heart

1193. things that He wants to share out

1194. and preach to the congregation.

  1195. That's what God,

1196. that's why God has placed us

  1197. where we are.

  1198. You see,

  1199. our invitation to others

  1200. to come to church,

  1201. however we put it,

1202. doesn't really make much difference

  1203. how we put it,

1204. though we have to think carefully

  1205. about our words,

  1206. but we want people

  1207. to come to church.

  1208. We want others

1209. who've stopped coming to church

1210. or dropped out of the habit

  1211. of coming to church

  1212. for whatever reason,

1213. especially since the COVID period.

1214. We know that there are some people

  1215. maybe still reluctant

1216. to come out physically to church

  1217. to join others.

1218. All of that is part of

1219. where we are as a people

  1220. and as a congregation

  1221. and as a community,

1222. but however we put it

  1223. and however much

  1224. the invitation is meant,

1225. this is the basis of it

  1226. because we are convinced

  1227. that the importance

  1228. of this event

1229. is based on the fact

  1230. that God is here

1231. and that God speaks to us

1232. and that we should be ready

  1233. to listen to Him.

  1234. So the preparation

1235. in the preaching of the gospel,

  1236. the preparation for it

1237. is based on the fact

  1238. that it's an occasion

1239. where God speaks to His people

  1240. and therefore not only

1241. do we want to come

1242. to be part of that ourselves,

  1243. but we want others

1244. to share it with us as well.

  1245. That's where the invitation,

1246. that's where the evangelistic emphasis

  1247. of the church

1248. really reaches out to people

1249. on the basis of what happens

1250. in the preaching of the Word.

  1251. But there's also,

1252. along with calling His friends,

  1253. this due preparation,

  1254. there's a readiness to hear.

  1255. Now he says,

  1256. we are all here

1257. in the presence of God

1258. to hear all that you have been commanded

  1259. by the Lord.

1260. They are there in the presence of God,

  1261. Cornelius is saying,

  1262. we are all here,

1263. and we are here specifically

1264. to hear what you have to say,

1265. what God has commanded you

  1266. to say to us.

1267. Well, many of us are old enough

1268. like I am to go back

  1269. to pre-television days

1270. and even to pre-digital radio days.

1271. And when you wanted to listen

1272. to something on the radio,

  1273. I remember as a boy

  1274. with my father listening

  1275. to things like

  1276. international football matches

  1277. Scotland were playing.

1278. You would listen to it on the radio,

1279. but you had to tune the radio

  1280. to the right channel,

  1281. and sometimes the signal

  1282. wasn't all that great,

1283. and you would hear a lot of whistling

  1284. and cracking and noises,

1285. and then the channel would come up

1286. and you'd be listening to it,

  1287. and then just maybe

1288. at a very important part

  1289. in the commentary

  1290. and the radio commentary

1291. of it would go again,

  1292. crackling away,

1293. and you'd lose so much of it.

  1294. But you were trying

  1295. to tune that radio

  1296. to the correct position

1297. to hear what was being said,

  1298. and you were really

  1299. listening keenly,

1300. and because you were keen

1301. to hear and keen to listen

  1302. and keen to actually

1303. follow what was being said

1304. and hear all the details of it,

1305. you wanted to make sure

  1306. that the tuning

1307. was as accurate as possible.

  1308. And that's really,

  1309. in a sense,

  1310. what we're doing

  1311. with our minds

  1312. and with our souls

1313. as we come to church,

  1314. as we come to

  1315. hear the gospel.

1316. And as we come to follow

1317. the words of Cornelius there,

1318. this is how it should be

  1319. for ourselves,

1320. our minds to be tuned

  1321. accurately and carefully

  1322. and prayerfully

1323. to the voice of God.

  1324. There's no ordinary voice.

  1325. There's no ordinary occasion.

1326. We may think at times

  1327. that it's something

1328. that we just do habitually,

  1329. and we do.

  1330. It is a habit.

  1331. It's a good habit,

1332. but it's more than that.

  1333. It's something where we,

  1334. every time we come,

  1335. should be thinking,

1336. I'm there to listen to God.

  1337. I'm there to listen

1338. to what God has given

  1339. the preacher to say.

  1340. And however much

  1341. we've heard it already,

  1342. it's the same

  1343. on this occasion

  1344. as on previous occasions.

  1345. We're here

  1346. to listen to God.

  1347. the larger catechism,

  1348. question 160,

1349. what is required of those

1350. that hear the word preached?

  1351. Important question.

1352. It is required of those

1353. that hear the word preached

1354. that they attend upon it

  1355. with diligence,

  1356. preparation,

  1357. and prayer,

  1358. that they examine

  1359. what they hear

  1360. by the Scriptures,

  1361. that they receive

  1362. the truth with faith,

  1363. love,

  1364. meekness,

  1365. and readiness of mind

1366. as the word of God,

  1367. that they meditate

  1368. and confer of it,

  1369. that they hide it

  1370. in their hearts

  1371. and bring forth

  1372. the fruit of it

  1373. in their lives.

  1374. Now,

  1375. there's a lot packed

  1376. into that answer

  1377. to the question,

  1378. what is required

  1379. of those

  1380. that hear

  1381. the word preached?

  1382. but it's such

  1383. an important issue

  1384. and so many things

1385. that are related to it

  1386. because it's such

  1387. an important issue.

  1388. We are here

1389. in the presence of God

  1390. to hear

1391. all that you have been

  1392. commanded

  1393. by God

  1394. to say.

  1395. I'm always annoyed

  1396. if I'm on a plane

  1397. or any place else

1398. that has a safety announcement.

  1399. Just recently

  1400. on a plane,

  1401. the safety announcement

1402. was about to be made

  1403. and over the time

  1404. I came,

  1405. the announcement,

1406. I want you to listen

  1407. very carefully

  1408. to this following

  1409. safety announcement.

  1410. Even if you heard

  1411. similar before,

  1412. this is particularly

  1413. appropriate

  1414. to this type

  1415. of aircraft.

  1416. So,

  1417. please put off

  1418. your headphones,

  1419. stop your reading,

  1420. whatever you're doing,

  1421. please listen

  1422. and watch the demonstration.

  1423. And you know,

  1424. it's really annoying

  1425. because there was

1426. somebody in front of us

1427. who just had the earphones

  1428. on all the time.

  1429. I don't know,

  1430. maybe they were listening

1431. to it through the earphones.

  1432. I doubted.

1433. And there were other people

  1434. that were just in

  1435. conversation so loudly

  1436. with their fellow passenger

1437. that you could hardly hear

  1438. what was being said

  1439. because of their voice

  1440. being raised

  1441. to get it above

  1442. the announcement.

  1443. What's really happening there?

  1444. There's people being

  1445. given directions

  1446. as to their safety

  1447. and their well-being

  1448. and they're just hearing

  1449. it as a noise

  1450. but they're not really

  1451. listening to it.

  1452. They're maybe saying,

1453. oh, I heard all this

1454. before, I know it all.

  1455. Or maybe they're saying,

  1456. well, I don't want to think

  1457. about this plane crashing.

  1458. I don't want to think

1459. about that sort of disaster

  1460. so I'm not really

1461. going to listen to this.

  1462. It really scares me.

  1463. Maybe that's the reason

  1464. they don't listen.

  1465. But they should listen.

1466. Their safety depends on it.

1467. If that were to meet

  1468. with an emergency,

  1469. just imagine the panic

  1470. for people who hadn't

  1471. been listening to

  1472. what was being said.

  1473. What do I do?

  1474. Where's my life vest?

  1475. Here, God is doing

  1476. exactly the same thing

1477. but in a much more

  1478. important way.

  1479. He's giving you

  1480. a safety announcement today.

  1481. He's announcing to you

  1482. the things that are

  1483. so crucial to the

  1484. well-being of your soul,

1485. the well-being of your life,

  1486. to your eternity.

1487. And even if it's difficult

1488. for us, as it is at times

  1489. for us naturally,

1490. to think about the end of life,

  1491. what might be true

1492. at the end stage of life,

1493. what is true about death itself,

1494. what is true about eternity,

1495. what the Bible has to say.

  1496. I know it's difficult

1497. for us to actually think

  1498. of those things

  1499. because they're such

  1500. serious issues,

1501. but it's because they are

  1502. such serious issues

1503. that we have to listen

  1504. to God.

1505. And we have to clear

  1506. our minds

  1507. so that we're attuned

1508. to the voice of God.

  1509. The gospel

  1510. is in many ways

  1511. God's safety announcement

  1512. to us.

  1513. Here is where

  1514. our security is.

  1515. Here is where

  1516. our relationship with God

1517. is set out for us.

1518. Here is what is most

  1519. important and crucial

  1520. for us.

1521. And even you young folks

1522. today, you're not too young

1523. to listen to the voice

  1524. of God.

  1525. And I know sometimes

  1526. you actually show us

  1527. that you do listen,

  1528. and that's great

1529. to the voice of God

1530. because you tell your parents

1531. or others when you get home

1532. of what the minister was saying

1533. or what the children's address

  1534. was or whatever,

1535. and we hope that that's true.

  1536. But it's important always

  1537. that you listen

1538. to the voice of God

  1539. in the gospel,

1540. in the Word of God,

  1541. in the preaching

  1542. of the gospel.

1543. So you're never too young

  1544. to prepare

  1545. to meet with God.

  1546. Never too young

  1547. to serve God.

  1548. Never too young

  1549. to be a disciple

  1550. of Jesus.

1551. And so to do so,

  1552. we listen to God.

  1553. We are here

1554. in the presence of God

  1555. to hear

1556. all that you have been

  1557. commanded

  1558. by the Lord.

  1559. You know,

  1560. the Bible

  1561. joins together

  1562. three things

  1563. very, very closely.

  1564. So closely, in fact,

1565. that you can't separate them

  1566. unless you've been

  1567. deliberately

  1568. difficult about it.

  1569. And the three things

  1570. are hearing,

  1571. listening,

  1572. and obeying.

  1573. Because hearing

  1574. in the teaching

  1575. of the Bible

  1576. generally means

  1577. that you are listening.

  1578. It's not just

1579. the hearing of a sound.

  1580. It's the hearing

  1581. that is listening

  1582. to what actually

  1583. is being said,

  1584. to what God

1585. is actually saying to us.

  1586. And it's with a view

  1587. to obeying that

  1588. with a view

  1589. to actually working

  1590. that through

  1591. in your own life.

1592. These are the three things

  1593. the Bible

  1594. so closely joins together.

  1595. Sometimes,

  1596. as we've seen

  1597. with the safety announcement,

  1598. people are hearing,

1599. hearing the noise of it,

  1600. but not really listening

  1601. to the words,

  1602. not listening precisely.

1603. It must never be like that.

  1604. You and I

1605. must never get so used

  1606. to the preaching

  1607. of the gospel

  1608. or to reading

  1609. the Bible

  1610. for ourselves

1611. that we will just do it

1612. as a matter of fact

1613. and a matter of form

  1614. and think that we've

  1615. just ticked that box.

  1616. We are here

1617. in the presence of God

  1618. to hear,

  1619. to listen,

  1620. to have our minds

  1621. attuned

  1622. to what God

1623. is actually saying to us

  1624. through the message

  1625. of the gospel.

  1626. So that's the due

  1627. preparation,

  1628. due preparation

  1629. that flows into

  1630. what we actually do

  1631. while we're here

  1632. in church,

  1633. while we're gathered together

  1634. under the gospel.

  1635. But there's something else

1636. that I want to mention

1637. as our second main point

1638. is that we are all here,

  1639. not just to hear

  1640. all that you've been

  1641. commanded by God,

  1642. but he's saying

  1643. we are all here

  1644. in the presence

  1645. of God.

  1646. We are here

1647. in the presence of God.

  1648. He didn't say

  1649. we are all here

  1650. in the presence

  1651. of each other.

1652. We are all here together.

  1653. That was true.

  1654. We are here,

  1655. he says,

1656. in the presence of God.

  1657. And you know,

  1658. in many ways,

  1659. we might say

  1660. that that's one

  1661. of the most important

  1662. issues for us

1663. to have in our minds

  1664. as we come together

  1665. collectively

  1666. to worship the Lord.

  1667. That we are,

  1668. in fact,

  1669. in the presence

  1670. of God.

  1671. And the more

  1672. we fill our mind

1673. with the facts of that,

1674. with the fact of that,

1675. with the factuality of that,

1676. with the truth of that,

1677. the more you and I

  1678. will be prepared

  1679. to listen.

  1680. Because if we come

  1681. consciously to church

1682. or to wherever else we are,

1683. even if we're just reading

1684. the Bible on our own,

  1685. if we come conscious

  1686. of the fact that

  1687. it's God's presence

  1688. we are in,

  1689. we're always in God's presence

  1690. in a sense,

  1691. we're never out of God's sight,

  1692. but it's a special sense

  1693. in which we come

  1694. into God's presence

  1695. as we come together

  1696. collectively

  1697. as a gathered church

  1698. to worship Him.

  1699. We're in the presence

  1700. of God

  1701. in that special sense

  1702. of which the Bible

  1703. often speaks,

1704. that we draw near to God.

  1705. And we saw that

  1706. in Hebrews 10.

  1707. You'll find in Hebrews 4,

    Hebrews 4:16

  1708. verse 16,

  1709. let us draw near

1710. to the throne of grace,

  1711. that we may receive

  1712. mercy and obtain grace

1713. to help in time of need.

  1714. James 4, verse 8,

    James 4:8

  1715. draw near to God

1716. and He will draw near

  1717. to you.

  1718. So when we come

  1719. to gather together

  1720. as the gatherer church

  1721. of God,

  1722. we are drawing near

  1723. to God.

  1724. And as we're drawing

  1725. near to God

  1726. as we gather,

  1727. we do so mindfully.

  1728. We do so mindful

  1729. of the fact

  1730. that it is God

  1731. that we approach,

1732. that we're in the presence

  1733. of God.

  1734. And that's what makes

  1735. the occasion

  1736. truly special

  1737. and significant to us,

  1738. that we're not just

  1739. meeting together,

  1740. we're meeting together

  1741. in the presence

  1742. of God.

  1743. How important

  1744. is that to yourself

  1745. today?

1746. Is that how you prepare

  1747. to come to church

  1748. today?

  1749. Did you prepare

  1750. by saying,

  1751. I know that I'm going

  1752. to be with others

  1753. coming into the presence

  1754. of God,

  1755. so I've really got

  1756. to think about that?

  1757. I've got to think

  1758. about the privilege

  1759. of that,

  1760. the importance of that?

  1761. I know that I'm going

  1762. to a place

  1763. which is associated

  1764. with God speaking

  1765. through the preaching

  1766. of the Word.

  1767. I need to prepare

  1768. for that,

  1769. I need to pray

  1770. about that,

  1771. I need to think

  1772. about what that means

  1773. to myself,

1774. is that how you came,

1775. is that how you prepared?

  1776. And when you think

  1777. about the fact

  1778. that God is speaking,

  1779. that that's what makes

  1780. the occasion very special

  1781. through the preaching

  1782. of the Word,

  1783. did you invite

  1784. somebody else to come?

  1785. Did you say

  1786. to somebody,

1787. look, I really would like

1788. you to come to church

  1789. with me today,

  1790. it's important?

  1791. Did you invite someone

  1792. to church?

  1793. When did you last

  1794. invite somebody

  1795. to come to church

  1796. with you?

  1797. See, if we're thinking

  1798. as we should be

  1799. of how important

  1800. an occasion it is

  1801. that God speaks

  1802. to His people,

  1803. how important

  1804. an occasion it is

  1805. where we're in

  1806. the presence of God,

  1807. that our hearts

  1808. should surely be burdened

  1809. that others would come

  1810. and share that

  1811. and share that experience

  1812. and know that

  1813. for themselves.

  1814. And that's why

  1815. we invite them,

  1816. because it's important

  1817. to us

  1818. that God is here,

  1819. that God is speaking,

  1820. and we want others

  1821. to benefit

  1822. from that with us.

  1823. And he says here,

  1824. we are all

  1825. in the presence

  1826. of God here.

  1827. And that word

  1828. all actually

  1829. is very emphatic

  1830. in the Greek text

  1831. of that verse.

  1832. Now, therefore,

  1833. we are all here.

  1834. Cornelius said,

1835. all of us are here.

  1836. Everybody that I invited

  1837. is here,

  1838. and we're here

  1839. to hear what God

1840. has to say to us

  1841. through you.

  1842. And that makes it

  1843. important too,

  1844. because we can say

  1845. that of ourselves today,

  1846. we are all here.

  1847. In other words,

  1848. you say of yourself,

  1849. well, I'm here

  1850. and I'm here

1851. with a lot of other people,

  1852. and we're here

  1853. to hear what God

  1854. is saying,

  1855. and that's where

  1856. I want to be,

  1857. and that's what

1858. I really love to be.

  1859. It doesn't matter

  1860. what others say.

  1861. It doesn't matter

  1862. what others

  1863. outside the all

  1864. have to say.

  1865. This is for us.

  1866. This is where

  1867. I want to be.

  1868. This is what's meaningful.

  1869. This is what's important

  1870. to me.

1871. And we are all here.

  1872. Nobody's left out.

  1873. Those who are here

  1874. are here

  1875. because they want

  1876. to be here,

  1877. because they know

  1878. that it's an important

  1879. occasion.

  1880. for themselves.

  1881. And it's to hear

1882. all that you have been

  1883. commanded by the Lord.

  1884. That's interesting

  1885. because the beginning

  1886. of the chapter,

  1887. we read that

  1888. this man,

  1889. Cornelius,

  1890. was a centurion

  1891. of a certain group

  1892. of soldiers

  1893. called the Italian Corps.

  1894. You might say

  1895. that was his group.

  1896. That was the group

1897. he was in charge of.

  1898. And as a centurion

  1899. in charge of

  1900. a hundred soldiers,

  1901. this man would be

  1902. well used to giving

  1903. orders.

1904. And not only would be

  1905. well used to giving

  1906. orders,

1907. but well used to expect

  1908. that the orders

  1909. he gave would be

  1910. obeyed.

  1911. That people would

  1912. actually do the things

  1913. that he was ordering

  1914. and that he often

1915. would be for their own

  1916. safety as well.

1917. And as he gave the orders,

  1918. he expected those

  1919. who were hearing him

1920. to carry out these orders

1921. to the best of their ability.

  1922. And that's what God,

  1923. our commander,

1924. is saying to us today.

1925. The things that you have

  1926. been commanded

  1927. by the Lord,

  1928. there's no ordinary task

  1929. to preach the gospel.

  1930. I'm not highlighting myself

  1931. when I say that.

  1932. Others who are preachers

  1933. of the gospel

  1934. will say exactly

  1935. the same thing.

  1936. It's no ordinary task

  1937. to preach the gospel.

  1938. It's the greatest privilege

  1939. given to human beings

  1940. to actually be

  1941. the mouthpiece for God,

  1942. to actually be someone

  1943. that God is using

  1944. to convey His truth

1945. or to seek to explain

  1946. or expound His truth.

  1947. That's why it's commanded

  1948. by God.

1949. That's why it lies upon us

1950. as something that God Himself

  1951. places upon us

  1952. as a burden.

  1953. He commands us

  1954. to preach the gospel.

  1955. It's not a burdensome command

  1956. in the sense

1957. in which we don't want

  1958. to do it.

  1959. It's burdensome

  1960. because it carries

  1961. responsibility.

  1962. But you see,

1963. the thing for you today

1964. as hearers of the gospel,

  1965. hearers of the gospel

  1966. preached is this.

  1967. All the things,

1968. I trust in speaking the truth,

  1969. all the things

1970. that you will be hearing

  1971. today in this sermon

  1972. are things commanded

  1973. by the Lord.

  1974. You're not here

  1975. to listen to me.

  1976. You're not here

  1977. because I have something

1978. that I am commanding you to do.

  1979. You're not here

  1980. because I am instructing

  1981. or pointing

  1982. or doing something

  1983. that draws your mind

  1984. to certain activity

  1985. that you're hearing

  1986. you should be doing

1987. or ought to be doing.

  1988. You are here

  1989. because God has commanded

1990. His message to go forth.

1991. And as He has commanded it,

1992. so it's incumbent upon you

1993. and it's incumbent upon me too

1994. as a preacher of the gospel

  1995. to first of all

1996. listen to God for myself.

1997. And if I'm not listening to God

  1998. for myself,

1999. then I'm not going to be serving you

2000. as you minister in the gospel.

  2001. Now therefore,

  2002. He said,

  2003. we are all here

2004. in the presence of God.

  2005. What is the purpose

  2006. of the church

  2007. gathered together?

  2008. Well, as I said

  2009. at the beginning,

  2010. there are many aspects

  2011. to that.

  2012. But we're narrowing

  2013. our focus

2014. to this very important aspect.

  2015. We are gathered together

  2016. as a church

  2017. to hear

  2018. what God

  2019. is saying to us.

  2020. You can go to

  2021. many places today

  2022. where the sermon

2023. will be just five minutes,

  2024. ten minutes,

  2025. where the sermon

2026. will not be an exposition

  2027. of Scripture,

2028. where people are not used

  2029. to listening

  2030. to a sermon,

  2031. what is it,

2032. about half an hour or so

  2033. since I began preaching.

2034. Many places in the world today

  2035. will be absolutely appalled

  2036. at the fact

  2037. that people would come

2038. to listen for half an hour

  2039. to somebody

  2040. in a pulpit spouting.

  2041. This is God's truth.

2042. The things that have been

  2043. commanded by God

  2044. for us to believe

  2045. and you are here

2046. in the presence of God

  2047. to listen,

  2048. to hear,

  2049. not to hear

2050. the voice of a minister,

  2051. though that's the medium,

  2052. that's the agent

  2053. by which the message

  2054. goes forth.

  2055. You are here

  2056. to listen to God.

  2057. You are here

2058. to say to the Lord,

  2059. Lord,

  2060. speak to me

  2061. through this man.

  2062. Speak to me

  2063. through the preaching

  2064. of the gospel.

  2065. Stir up my soul

  2066. from your word.

  2067. Teach me,

  2068. edify me,

  2069. sanctify me,

  2070. guide me,

  2071. lead me,

  2072. comfort me,

  2073. convict me.

2074. It all comes to the same

  2075. that you are here

  2076. to listen

  2077. to God,

2078. to what you have been commanded,

  2079. he said,

  2080. by the Lord.

  2081. Now I've got a wee exercise

2082. for you to finish with.

  2083. You can do it

  2084. when you get home,

  2085. please.

  2086. James chapter 1,

    James 1:21–25

  2087. verses 21 to 25.

  2088. I'd like you to

  2089. just spend some time

  2090. looking at these verses

2091. because you could call them

  2092. the before and during

  2093. and after

  2094. the word being preached.

  2095. The before,

  2096. the during,

  2097. the after,

  2098. the word being preached.

  2099. Verses 21 to 25.

  2100. I'll just read them

2101. and leave you to do

  2102. the exercise yourselves

2103. whenever you have a moment.

  2104. Epistle of James

    James 1:21

  2105. chapter 1,

  2106. verse 21.

  2107. Therefore,

  2108. put away all filthiness

  2109. and rampant wickedness

  2110. and receive with meekness

  2111. the implanted

  2112. or engrafted word

  2113. which is able

  2114. to save your souls.

2115. But be doers of the word

  2116. and not hearers only,

  2117. deceiving yourselves.

2118. For if anyone is a hearer

  2119. of the word

  2120. and not a doer,

  2121. he's like a man

  2122. who looks intently

  2123. at his natural face

  2124. in a mirror.

2125. For he looks at himself

  2126. and goes away

  2127. and at once forgets

  2128. what he was like.

2129. But the one who looks

  2130. into the perfect law,

  2131. the law of liberty,

  2132. and perseveres,

  2133. being no hearer

  2134. who forgets

2135. but a doer who acts,

  2136. he will be blessed

  2137. in his doing.

  2138. See, there's things

  2139. you do before,

  2140. there's due preparation,

  2141. the things we do

  2142. during the preaching

  2143. of the word.

  2144. We're looking at ourselves

  2145. through what the word

  2146. of God shows ourselves

  2147. to be

  2148. and we're hearing

  2149. about God

  2150. and what God

  2151. is saying to us.

2152. And we don't leave it

  2153. at that.

  2154. We then become

  2155. doers of the word.

  2156. We carry out

  2157. what God is saying

  2158. to us

  2159. to do

  2160. as his people

  2161. in the world

  2162. as Christians,

  2163. as followers,

  2164. as disciples.

  2165. of the Lord.

  2166. Well, may God bless

  2167. his word to us.

  2168. Let's pray.

  2169. Our gracious

  2170. and eternal God,

  2171. we give thanks

  2172. to your name today

  2173. that you continue

  2174. to speak to us,

  2175. that you have not

2176. turned your back on us,

  2177. that you have not

2178. turned us away from you.

  2179. And we give thanks,

  2180. Lord,

  2181. that you continue

  2182. to address us

  2183. through your word

  2184. and through the preaching

  2185. of the gospel.

  2186. your people

  2187. are edified

  2188. and others called

  2189. to join the number

  2190. of your believing people.

  2191. Oh, Lord,

  2192. today we pray

2193. that you would enable us

2194. as each day goes by

  2195. to be more keen

2196. to hear what you say

  2197. to us,

2198. that we will be glad

  2199. to gather together

  2200. as we do today

  2201. so as to hear

  2202. what God,

  2203. the Lord,

  2204. will speak to us.

  2205. Help us to receive

  2206. your word.

  2207. Help us, Lord,

  2208. as James said,

  2209. to receive

  2210. that engrafted word,

  2211. that our hearts

  2212. may be spliced open

  2213. so as to receive

  2214. your word

  2215. and thereby

  2216. that we will grow

2217. into the kind of people

2218. that we ought to be

  2219. in your presence.

  2220. Help us, Lord,

  2221. to honor your presence.

  2222. Help us to realize

  2223. as we come together

2224. into the presence of God

2225. that we are to be

  2226. like Moses long ago

2227. who came to draw near

  2228. to the burning bush,

  2229. having heard God

  2230. say to him

2231. that he was to take

  2232. his shoes from off

  2233. his feet

  2234. for the place

2235. on which he was standing

  2236. was holy ground.

  2237. And we pray today,

  2238. Lord,

  2239. for a sense of

  2240. your holiness,

2241. a sense of our own

  2242. need and relation

  2243. to that.

  2244. We pray that you'd

  2245. continue to own

  2246. and bless your word

  2247. amongst us

  2248. as we continue

  2249. as your people.

  2250. Hear us,

  2251. we pray,

  2252. for Jesus' sake.

  2253. Amen.

  2254. Well, our final psalm

  2255. this morning

  2256. is in Psalm 85.

  2257. It's 85 in the Scottish Psalter,

  2258. verses 8 to 13.

  2259. The tune is Newington.

  2260. I'll hear what God

  2261. the Lord will speak.

  2262. To his folk

  2263. he'll speak peace

  2264. unto his saints,

2265. but let them not return

  2266. to foolishness.

2267. To them that fear him

2268. surely near is his salvation,

2269. that glory in our land

  2270. may have her habitation.

  2271. Page 340 in Psalm 85,

2272. that I'll hear what God

  2273. the Lord will speak.

  2274. I'll hear what God

  2275. the Lord will speak.

  2276. To his folk

  2277. he'll speak peace.

  2278. unto his saints,

  2279. unto his saints,

  2280. unto his saints,

2281. but let them not return

  2282. to foolishness.

2283. To them that fear him

2284. surely near is his salvation.

2285. and glory in her land may have

  2286. her habitation.

  2287. truth met with mercy,

  2288. righteousness,

  2289. and peace is mutually.

  2290. Truth springs from air

  2291. and righteousness,

2292. truth's down from heaven high.

  2293. If what is good

  2294. the Lord shall give,

2295. our wrath shall yield in peace.

  2296. Justice who sent us

  2297. in his steps

2298. shall go before his face.

2299. I'll go to the main door

  2300. after the benediction.

  2301. Now may the grace

2302. of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  2303. the love of God,

  2304. the Father,

  2305. and the communion

  2306. of the Holy Spirit

  2307. be with you now

  2308. and evermore.

  2309. Amen.

  2310. and both Him

  2312. of God

  2313. will pergunta
